I'm Alexis Nunes alongside my girl Ali Krieger. We're feeling festive. Happy holidays. We're bringing some sparkle into your life, hopefully. And speaking of sparkle, we are finally joined by our other girl, Natalia Srein, who finally we get to hear from as well. We missed her last week, and we cannot wait to delve into conversation with her because our Spanish girls, as usual, have been doing absolute bits in Europe. A lot of things that were decided today, especially those very coveted top four spots in the Champions League.
0:47So we're going to get to some of the highlights right now. There were still some more things to be decided, and it was quite close as there was only one point that was separating the teams from four to nine. Well, one of those teams that was aiming to get in the top four was Wolfsburg. They hosted Chelsea. Not the happiest of hunting grounds for Chelsea at Wolfsburg. 16 minutes in, though, it was the host that went 1-0 up, Ali. Yeah, this was a tough giveaway, right? And obviously, Wolfsburg just took their opportunity and was able to put the ball in the back of the net. Pop with such a brilliant goal.
1:20It's so difficult to bring down and put in the back of the net off of Valle. She does well. Didn't I tell you I wanted to see an Alex Pop goal? and that's exactly what I got indeed. Sam Kerr here. I did want to see a Sam Kerr goal here. She had a chance, but just missing it. Yeah, Sandy Baltimore crosses into the box and Sam Kerr, yeah, just misses that close chance. Well, in the end, 41st minute now. Wolfsburg here on the counter, but my girl Lucy Bronze says absolutely not. And then directly after that defensive play, she makes this brilliant goal, just using her physicality, getting up, putting the team on her back and was able to put the ball in the back of the net.
2:00Another goal for Lucy Bronze. I told you defenders can score goals, right? Yeah, she brings it back into a tie, 1-1. Keeps it really close. Once again, a beautiful cross in. Sam Kerr back on the scoring sheet where she belongs. Brilliant header, side netting. Lifts it right over the goalkeeper. She had no chance to save it. Sam Kerr back on the scoring sheet where she belongs indeed. Indeed, Wolfsburg here with a final chance of the game. But it hits the post. Yeah, this was unfortunate. Obviously, the way that they played in the first half definitely did not happen in the second. But they were coming close in the very end.
2:37Well, in the end, it was Chelsea that walked away with a very rare win at Wolfsburg in the Champions League. And if you just have a look at this graphic and all of these stats for Chelsea, you can see that they truly have been a class above the rest. So let's get some post-match reaction now from the goal scorers from the Blues, Lucy Bronze and Sam Kerr.
3:04It's really good to get the win. I think that's what I was saying before, an English team hasn't won here at Wolfsburg away, so I think that's a nice record to hold and a good kind of bump to get over, to show a bit more character, to show a lot more maturity in this Chelsea team. And obviously getting that goal in the first half when Wolfsburg was really on top, I think, I think they played better in the first half. To get that goal before half-time really helped us swing the game going into half-time. We could tweak a few things and obviously came out with the win. You know, they're a good team, so you have to give them credit.
3:35And they made it hard for us in the first half. And I think at half-time we just came together. And like you said, the goal helped a lot. And we tweaked a few things. And then I thought all the subs that came on did an amazing job. I thought CEO was outstanding and helped us a lot. So I think it was just, you know, it's just these games. They go back and forth. They're a good team. We're a good team. and they were on top in the first half and then we kind of fought our way back in and that's what good teams do. We fought back and to score two away here is a really big performance. To get into the top four and be qualified, it's a great feeling and I think that's what we plan to do, start at the Champions League group phase, so yeah, it feels good.
4:14Goal scorers there, Lucy Bronze and Sam Kerr. Sam Kerr, is there nothing she can't do? She's literally getting ready to get married and plan a wedding in a couple of days, But here she is scoring the winner for Chelsea in the Champions League. Ali, let me start with you on this one. Because, look, Chelsea is Chelsea, but we know that Wolfsburg was no easy place for them. We heard Lucy Browns talking about how it has not been a happy hunting ground for English teams. But what is it about Chelsea that still, even when they go behind, they find a way? One, I think it's just the depth that they have.
4:41Two is just the mentality is unmatched. They, like Lucy had said, in the first half, they were struggling. Wolfsburg had the upper hand. It looked like they were actually going to score a couple more goals. And then they shifted a few things. They adjusted a few things at halftime. Their leaders step up, and they know what they have to do in order to achieve the top four. So they get the job done. They put the ball in the back of the net, especially with a Sam Kerr on the field. You know that's likely to happen. So it's that mentality and being able to come from behind and knowing that you're going to win no matter what the circumstances are.
5:16And they have the ability to do that. They have the depth. They have the talent. even the substitutions that they made with Aggie Beaver Jones coming in and solidifying that win was really crucial. And Natalia, just looking at what Chelsea do so well, I know Alyssa Thompson spoke after the game too, and she said once Lucy Bronze equalized, she said, I knew we were going to win it from that point, which I feel like only playing for maybe Chelsea and Barcelona. Do you ever think that when the game is far from over yet? But is it Chelsea's mentality that impresses you the most? Yeah, the mentality and I feel they can play different games in the same game, like micro games.
5:56I see Chelsea playing sometimes like a more direct and vertical style. And when they play, for example, against FCB Barcelona, they were absolutely more possession orientated. So I feel like the versatility, not only about the player, and I totally agree with Ali about the depth of the roster. In addition, the versatility of the style of play of Chelsea and all the players, the mentality, Alissa Thompson, the US mentality. If there are something that highlight about the ladies in the US is this winning mentality always. Yeah, that is a massive winning mentality that saw them through. But this is something that they've needed because that winning mentality hasn't necessarily been on show domestically in the WSL because Manchester City are definitely giving Chelsea a run for their money in their title.
6:44There was a moment where Chelsea would have been out of this top four. Wolfsburg would have been in. And that would have just been an absolute nightmare for Sonia Bonpastor. But how crucial was it, Ali, for them to be able to breathe come February and concentrate on maybe trying to catch up to Manchester City at home? Yeah, it's such a good point because now they can, you know, narrow their focus domestically on that, you know, chasing that title. Because Man City does have, you know, the race at hand right now. And they do need every ounce of energy towards that title as well. So taking, you know, these couple games off from Champions League, so to speak, where they don't have to be in the playoffs.
7:21And now they have solidified that top four and playing less amount of games. They can now focus their energy on that. They can get the amount of rest that they that they need and they deserve because they have performed well in the Champions League. And now they can, you know, add that and apply that to the domestic title and being able to focus the next three weeks, take a nice break and then get, you know, get focused on winning that and getting more points and catching up to Man City. Natalia, just a quick one on that winning goal coming from Sam Kerr. And I mean, after what she's been through with that injury, we were wondering what kind of Sam Kerr we were going to get back.
7:58But as Ali said, she's back where she belongs, not just on the score sheet, but scoring in big moments. Yeah, the mentality she has about leadership. And she shows up in the moment that the team must need. And I think today, without that, we wanted this kind of player. We miss her a lot. And I think we are saying not the best version yet, but she's arriving there. And I think it's really important for Chelsea. See, another thing that I want to highlight, jumping a little bit for the topic, but for me, Girma. Girma is getting fit, and for me, is one of the game changers. I'm so sorry, but she's one of my ladies.
8:38I needed to highlight that. Ali will not argue there, because we love showing defenders love, don't we? Yes, absolutely. And you're spot on. Now that she's injury-free, she's playing more consistent minutes, and I know that they've been switching around, along with the formation out of the back and giving different defenders different amounts of time. But seeing her more consistently playing at this level in the Champions League in this tournament has been really thrilling because we know how good she is. We know how good she can be. And, you know, giving her the opportunity to perform how talented she is week in and week out has been phenomenal.
9:13Yeah, it's not often that we call defenders the game changers, but we absolutely stan a game-changing defender in this one. Just a note now on Wolfsburg. Natalia, how do you think they'll be feeling after this? Because they're still very much in the Champions League, in the playoffs. But to then go from a position where you're at home, you know an English team has not had success there. Yes, it is Chelsea. But still, how do you think they would be feeling after this game? What do they take from this to go forward? I think they need to learn the situation because they were very inconsistent. Probably it's rare to see a Bols were very inconsistent.
9:46It's a German team. Usually they are always very regular. We saw this amazing goal from Pop, one of the legends of the team, scoring in the moment that the team needed as well. But I think that this second half is what I am talking about. They need to be more consistent and probably they need to learn about that because in Champions League, you cannot concede. You disappear for some minutes. The opponents are really strong and you can lose the game playing at home either way. Yep, as she said, this is a Champions League. You cannot concede, and you cannot concede to the beast that is Chelsea because that mentality is almost second to none.
10:26All right, well, let's move on to another very interesting game as well. Ali's Dark Horses, Juventus against my girls of Manchester United and the Great Wall of the USA that we call Fallon's choice, but we will talk about her in a bit. Five minutes in, remember what I just said, the Great Wall? That is Fallon. How about that, Ali? Yeah, brilliant save. Obviously saw exactly where the ball was headed every inch of that shot. So well done in the judgment, parried it away out of the threat. Well, in the 18th minute came the breakthrough. Rolf will receive the ball. She passes it over to Jess Park and it goes in the back of the net and I could not believe it.
11:08No, where I think Park has been brilliant for Manchester United, It has actually elevated the front six and has been involved in almost every single play that has been successful. So well done there. Once again, you see this combination play and brilliant by Millard. Unfortunate, didn't go in the back of the net. Great save, but well done in that combination and attacking presence. 53rd minute now, you were talking about brilliant saves. And right here, we're going to get a safe one. Yes, but Park, once again, you see her in these moments, creating opportunities, getting shots off. Unfortunately, that didn't go in.
11:42And then on the opposite end here, almost in to affect the game in more of a positive way for Hube. Couldn't get this in the back of the net, but this was an opportunity for them to start showing what they have. Well, another clean sheet for Fallon and Manchester United, and they will happily take that narrow away win as it confirms their spot in the playoffs. Juventus as well, even though surely they would have entered this one as the favorites. Let's get some post-match reaction. It's disappointing. I think it was a quite equal game. I think in the second half, we were able to dominate them a little bit as well and create some chances.
12:21In the end, we didn't defend our own box good enough, and they took their one chance they had in the first half. And, yeah, football is about scoring goals, and we didn't finish our chances today. I think it was a tight game. It wasn't necessary to lose, but we're really proud of our knockout or of our group stages, however you want to call it. because we were surprised and we did really well against the big teams as well. We had our big goal tonight to win the game and to keep the possibility open to go top four. Unfortunately that didn't work, but again, as I said before, we can be really proud.
12:53We had some really tough games and we played well against Lyon, we played well against Bayern Munich and we also played well tonight against Man United. These are the top teams and we want to compete against the top teams in Europe. That's an exciting thing and now we have to go through playoffs and other two important games ahead. I'm looking forward to it and I believe with that team there is a lot possible. All right, well, it seems like mixed feelings there. A bittersweet moment, of course, for LIA and Juventus because, as Ali said, you had them as your dark horse, just probably squeezing into that top four.
13:25They didn't, you know, get the goal that they wanted. It wasn't even a draw. It was a loss. She calls Manchester United one of the top teams in Europe, but they still are a young team in the Champions League as well. So how do Juventus take this loss? Yeah, it's tough because, like she mentioned, they did play well against the top teams like Lyon and obviously tonight. They still need to be proud of their performance. This is still a really difficult tournament, and they're still in it. Just because you're not in the top four doesn't mean you're fully out of it and you have no control. You know, you have two extra games, possibly, that you need to get into the next rounds.
14:02But the way that they've been performing, the way that they can play, The talent that they have, the opportunities that they create have been really significant in the way that they've been performing and the success that they've had. So tonight, yeah, they didn't create the, you know, score the chances that they created. But it doesn't mean that it can't happen. And now they can just build off of that. It's not like they're taking their foot off the gas because they still had a good performance. It was a bit back and forth. But, yes, just like Leah had mentioned, they have to finish their opportunities when they get them.
14:32because you don't know when or how many you'll have in these types of games with top opponents. Yeah, Natalia, as Ali said, of course, it is mixed feelings. They did perform well against the big teams. They just lost this one against Manchester United, but still very much in it. So what do they learn from this to go forward now in the playoffs? I feel like they are willing to show that this is not a casualty. She mentioned about, oh, we could finish in the top four. And for me, was one of the predictions. I really thought that Juve could do the top four, honestly, be the Dark Horse as well. But I feel like they want to show that this is not a moment.
15:11This is not only a short performance. I think there are a team that we need to take in consideration for the next round. Because when we saw the games, they are really, really good with organizing, defending. And when they go to attack, they are with really clear ideas. and they have really good players like Girelli, for example, with a lot of experience and she knows what is a score in Europe. Now, if you'd allow me to just put my little Manchester United fan hat on for a bit when I ask this next question, because, wow, what a performance from the girls. And if you asked me, Manchester United new to this competition coming in, if you had asked me before that they would finish sixth level on points only by goal difference, separating them from the defending champions that are Arsenal in this, I would have taken that all day, every day, Ali.
16:02So all this talk about dark horses. Could United be viewed as one going forward now? Nobody right here knows Mark Skinner quite like you do. So what have we learned from this Manchester United? Yes and no, they can be a dark horse. Because just like tonight, you can have these performances where the mentality kicks in, where that consistency and that confidence kicks in, where they create opportunities, they finish, you can see the front six really combining and being energetic. So they've impressed. But they're defensively organized. They're disciplined. They're hard to break down. And winning 1-0 away at Juve was no small task.
16:39So they still have work to do. Let me set in a reality check because we all remember them losing 3-0 to Lyon. Do we? Maybe not you. But there's definitely a reality check in. And that shows the gap still is a bit far away. But they still can be super proud because this is their first experience. They didn't know what to expect. They didn't have the expectation. They didn't have, you know, the idea of how to show up and perform other than just what they're used to and showing up for themselves and as a team. And kind of just having these, yeah, just these expectations that were just, well, let's go see what happens.
17:19This mentality of let's show up. Let's play our game. Let's stick together and fight. And we'll see what comes of it. and they've done a tremendous job of doing that. And Mark Skinner is the type of coach to really get that out of individual players. The way he manages players and tries to get the best out of them, you could tell that they are young, they are willing to learn, they're willing to perform together, and you can see that. And it's been really fun to watch, and they will be a surprise team, I think, in this playoffs. I don't know if they can win because you see that big gap still against the biggest teams, but I do think they have a chance.
17:56Oh, so you're saying there's a chance. She's saying there's a chance. Slight chance. Don't bring me down a peg. Don't bring me. Let's go on to the next game because I'm going to take it as there is a chance. Bayern Munich up against Balerenga in this one. Bayern Munich undoubtedly favorites. Two minutes in, they show why as they take a very early lead. Yeah, well done. Beautiful play inside the 18. It's really difficult to break down that defense. and opponents who kind of sit back, stay tight. Well done here, picking players out, being in the right spaces in the right times, and able to finish that.
18:35Well, just a couple of minutes later, Barron once again going on the attack. We get a shot from outside the box, and best believe it went in. Goalkeeper kind of just watching it. Yeah, obviously the defender does not step in time to put pressure on, so Balasegar gets to be able to take the ball all the way towards the outside of the box, but enough to be able to get this shot off. Well done. Really difficult to see. 31st minute now, Linda Dalman taking a shot right here, but it looks like there's a handball alley. The referee will check VAR and awards a penalty to Bayern. Any arguments? Yeah, no.
19:13I mean, you obviously couldn't see that in real time. And then when you look back at the video in VAR, unfortunate the PK was missed, but brilliant save. Brilliant save, indeed. 58th minute now, Clara Bull, who has just been on one the entire tournament, makes the cross. She finds Pernille Harder, and yep, it's another goal for Bayern. What I love about this is that Buell is able to pick players out in the box. You saw this in the first goal, and now you see this in Harder's goal here. She's able to provide service, but the difference is picking players out when in and around the box to be able to score these goals.
19:48So there's been a lot of talk about Chelsea, Barcelona, Lyon, But Bayern also making a statement that they are going to be a tough nut to crack in the Champions League. Just have a look at some of their stats. Clara Buell, as we talked about, just absolutely brilliant so far. Leading the Champions League this season with nine goal contributions and eight of them are assists. But let's hear from one of the goal scorers today, Pernille Hardo. We thought they would come out and be standing good in the defence. But it was really important for us. We scored early. Otherwise I think it could have been more difficult.
20:22So yeah, I'm happy with that and I also think we could have scored even more goals. But yeah, we got a good win. I think it's fun to play against more teams and it's different. But yeah, I'm happy we ended in top four. So I think it's a good format. I'm super happy. I'm very proud of the girls that we reached the top four. and now in the quarterfinal, yeah, it means a lot. Well, a very happy Pernille Harder there. And why not? Because as we said, Natalia, there has been so much talk, especially us, about the usual suspects, Barcelona, Chelsea, Lyon, who we know their pedigree in this tournament.
21:03But we haven't really been speaking that much about Bayern Munich, but here they are, top four finish, having players that are individually showing up some really brilliant stats to lead certain divisions in the Champions League. So how do you rate this performance and how good is this Bayern in terms of making a deep push? Well, if we remember the first game against Barcelona, no one, I think, would expect they finish in the top four because the performance was not good, honestly. And the score was like, OK, this is not the Bayern that we want to see. Right. I think the game that they changed the mentality was against Arsenal at home.
21:41They were losing in the halftime, and after in the second half, they come out and then win the game. I think from there, Bayern start growing in the competition. I like this team not only about individuals, and I agree there are players that make the difference, like a caraboul with these nine contributions to the goal. But tactically, I feel like they read really good the games. They understand perfectly what are the weakness of the opponent, and they come with a really clear game plan. And I like a lot this buyer as a unit. Ali, is that how you see it as well? Yeah, I mean, they're, you know, very professional.
22:22I think controlled. They needed to do what they did in order to get through. But I completely agree with Natalia about them coming back and fighting, you know, to beat Arsenal in that one game. Yes. Mentally, that does a lot for you, doesn't it? that does a tremendous because it just gives you that confidence that OK we're not out of it. We're still in it. We still have the quality. We still have the talent. We just have to put a complete game together. So game management I think for them is going to be key on both sides of the ball. But we see how effective and how positive their game can be and how successful they can be when they do the right.
22:57The things right. You know picking players out in the box defending one be one being able to connect passes and keep possession. But seeing the game out in a complete game I think is going to be key for them moving forward into these next rounds. 23:29The FIFA World Cup 2026 is back, America. And that means it's time to let the snacking begin. This summer, Lays is inviting everyone to jump on the bandwagon. Oh, you don't know the rules? You don't know any of the players' names? Doesn't matter. The bandwagon is for everyone. So grab a bag of Lays, gather some friends, and keep the party going. Lays, official sponsor of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Ones that we spoke about a lot last time around, because it's all good in the hood for them. Olympique Lyonnais up against Atletico de Madrid. 31st minute here. I don't think this would surprise many people.
24:05Lyon would take the lead, but unfortunately for Atleti, it's from an own goal. Yeah, I mean, I love this from Diani, who wins the ball back. She's dribbling past the defenders and was able to cross it in. And this is what happens when, you know, your defenders are facing your own goal. Own goals can happen. And then things get a little ugly here, Ali. 36-minute, a fast break for Atleti. And Luani with this foul right here. She grabs the hair just there. Girl, come on. And a straight red card is shown. Not the bundles. Not the bundles. Come on now. I've only seen that once before in my career. I think Connie Poehler's, not to put her on the spot, but I think she did that.

24:48Girl, you cannot be doing that. All right. Well, there was a handball call there in the penalty box. The referee then says penalty. And, of course, Wendy Renard puts it right in the back of the net for the 2-0 lead. And then shortly after that, literally a minute later, Katty Diani makes it 3-0. Yeah, she's been having a great game and a really good tournament. She's been super effective, and this game just proves it. Well done by Schrader here. This was an unbelievable goal to be able to come in and affect the game this way. To pick that shot out, knowing the goalkeeper was somewhat off her line, brilliant.
25:25What a stunning goal there from Schroeder. It's so nice. We may have to see it twice. Stand by. Stand by on that one. All right. Well, let's move on now. Paris FC up against Barcelona. 22 minutes in. Vicky Lopez just dancing through the defense here. And she makes it 1-0. I think one of the best young players, it's not deep, one of the best players in Europe right now currently has been having an incredible tournament. the way that she can put herself in goal-scoring positions just like this. The little technical ability to get the ball out of her feet and put the ball in the back of the net. Amazing.
26:02Now we're going to have to ask Natalia about that because, jeez, she left, I think, those two defenders back in her birth year right there. 49 minutes in, though, Carolyn Graham-Hansen's shot is about to take a little bit of a deflection, but you know what, it goes in and Barca say thank you, 2-0. Yeah, once again, just the technical ability, the focus. on how to get that slight separation away from the defender. And yes, a little deflection there, but well done with the pace of that shot and the side netting. Brilliant stuff there from Barcelona. And that train just keeps on coming along nicely, as I think a lot of us would have expected.
26:42They finish at the top of the table. They have been a goal-scoring machine. Natalia, we'll talk about Vicky Lopez's goal in just a bit. But overall, as another performance from Barcelona, Just another statement that they are the side to beat. Yeah, I think Barca finished brilliant, this competition, this first state of the groups. I think the question was with all the injuries, the big player, Patrick Harrow, Aitana, Ona Valle, how Barcelona can face these games. But, you know, have Vicky Lopez, another baby. They are amazing. It's like it doesn't matter what age you are. La Masia, they, you know, teach the player in order that when they need to show up and play these big games, they are absolutely ready.
27:28But Barcelona not only won today. I think they played really well and they wanted to be first and then they got it. They got it indeed. And Ali, it just makes me wonder if what happened in the final last year, if you feel like this Barcelona are almost playing with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder. Yeah, I think you have the right idea. I think they set the tone in Europe. They set the standard of how this game should be played and how this tournament should be played. And they do want to get back to that final, and they do want to win again because last year's – the defensive performance from Arsenal was outstanding and probably one of the only reasons why they didn't win and couldn't put the ball in the back of the net to be able to come out of their champions.
28:12So I think they do have that motivation to want to get back to that position. But they have set the tone. there's a clear separation between the elite and how they're performing and the rest of the teams within this tournament. And Natalia, just speaking about Vicky Lopez as well, I mean, just looking at her on all these big stages, she seems so comfortable there. And I know that shouldn't surprise us, but she still is up and coming. And there's a lot of big boots to fill, not just for club, but for country as well. But this is a huge opportunity in the Champions League to kind of continue growing and show us that she's that girl.
28:45Yeah, three years ago in 2022, she was playing the under-17 World Cup in India against the 17s that the U.S. national team that I was coaching. And she was there. And look, three years later, she is the game player today, the game changer. She won the MVP of the game scoring. All the focus is on her because Aitana is injured. And in addition, she has this responsibility with 19 years old. But she's embracing that. I think she's enjoying and she's young but she has experience on the field and I think she likes to play. It's a player that when she's on the ball and this creativity, I feel like she doesn't care who is watching her and what are the pressure on her that she performed really well.
29:31She performed really well indeed and Barcelona still undoubtedly one of the favorites to win this but we talked about it last week. Leone also showed us that they are that girl, too, in this competition as well. They had another statement win as well. Ali, how would you feel they're coming along in terms of how you would compare them, say, to the Chelsea's and Barcelona's? Yeah, I think they are right up there. They're fighting for, you know, one and two right now, you know, between Barcelona and themselves. I think they have the experience. They have the quality. You know, they continue to also set that standard and separate themselves and show why these complete performances and these dominant performances is why they get through to these final stages year after year.
30:15So they also want to get back to the final because of how they performed last year against Arsenal. And they have this chip on their shoulder from losing in the semifinals and not being able to reach the final. So I do think they now want to have, you know, with the new coaching style, with the new identity, with a few, you know, new players in the lineup. I think they have this extra motivation, a different vibe that we're seeing. And the fun, I feel like, is back. Just like how Natalia was talking about Vicky Lopez, just looking like she's having fun and enjoying it. I think as a group, I don't think I saw Lyon have fun last year.
30:53And this year, I think they're performing. They're having fun. They're playing well together individually, but also together collectively. And that's, I think, what the difference is in the separation between them, Barcelona, and then the rest of the group. Natalia, do you notice that as well, that Leona are probably having a lot more fun now playing their football, and then that could probably benefit them? Because as Ali said, they don't want to just get out of the group phase or make it to the quarters or semis. They want to be back in the final and winning this. Yeah, I agree. I don't want to be very biased, but the coach is from Barcelona.
31:24Of course. I think they are having fun because something is new. Yeah, but I think that is different. I agree with Thalie, new players and the style. And you can see the Lyon is this dangerous Lyon that years ago, wow, play against them was very scary. Yeah, no doubt that Jonathan Giraldez knows exactly what it takes to win a couple of things. And he's still so young. I think he's like my age. What if I won? Yeah, he's younger than me. So, OK. On that note, guys, the next game that went on is the defending champions, Arsenal. They went up against Leuven, away from home this time. 18 minutes in Olivia Smith taking a shot on goal, but it's blocked.
32:09Yeah, but well done. Good stuff on the follow-up because that is what helps her score this brilliant goal. You never want to stop until the ball is either out of play or in the back of the net. This is exactly what she does. She takes that opportunity and does really well with it. Arsenal with a 1-0 lead. Just about 10 minutes later, Alessia Russo dribbling to the center of the box right here. And Beth Mead cuts in. She shoots. She scores. It's so exciting to see Beth Mead at her best. I think this is the best football she's been playing in a while. Because last year, she was in and out of the first team.
32:40And then towards the beginning of this year, we weren't sure how she was going to show up. And if, you know, Renee was going to put her in and give her opportunity. But she's done brilliantly. Arsenal back on the attack here. Alessia Russo lively as she has been in this game and then Smith takes the shot but it's saved. Yeah but brilliant 1v1 play here to be able to put herself in a position and be able to pick a player out. Unfortunately it doesn't go in the back of that but brilliant brilliant opportunity and great chance. 67th minute now. Krooney Cross sending the ball to Kaitlin Ford who takes a shot but it's deflected off of Jansen and it's an own goal.
33:18Yeah, this is the second on goal we saw today. Obviously, the VAR is checked and it counts. So, well done. That's why you always have to just play the ball with that pace across the back, you know, the side of the goal. And sometimes the defender hits it in. Sometimes, indeed. Smiles all around for the gunners, the defending champions. Elsewhere, FC Twente took on Real Madrid. 46 minutes, Twente on the attack. And they take the lead. Yeah, well done. Great header. but also good service to be able to pick players out. And to be able to win this first post is really difficult to do. Into the second half now, Yasin with a cross into the box and Sara Dabritz.
33:59Her header hits the post, but a rebound is also missed. Yes, I mean, unfortunate, but well done to get herself back into this position to rebound. And they obviously get a set piece out of it. And into stoppage time right now. Now last chance for Real Madrid. And believe it, yes, they got the equalizer. Yeah, and Dabrichi was obviously hunting for that goal. Oh, she was. Beforehand with the ball at the crossbar, and now she's able to put it in the back of the net. Well done to be able to bring this down, take a slight touch to gain some space, and put it in the back of the net. This one ended 1-1.
34:38So let's have a look at all of the results from match day six of the Champions League. as we saw big wins for Bayern Munich, as well as Barcelona, as well as Manchester United, might I add. 36:47Olympique Lyonnais up against Atletico de Madrid. 31st minute here. I don't think this would surprise many people. Lyon would take the lead, but unfortunately for Atleti, it's from an own goal. Yeah, I mean, I love this from Diani who wins the ball back.
37:27Not the bundles. Not the bundles. Come on now. I've only seen that once before in my career. I think Connie Poehler is, not to put her on the spot. I think she did that. Girl, you cannot be doing that. All right. Well, there was a handball call there in the penalty box. The referee then says penalty. And, of course, Wendy Renard puts it right in the back of the net for the 2-0 lead. And then shortly after that, literally a minute later, Kaddi Diani makes it 3-0. 47:03And into stoppage time right now, last chance for Real Madrid. And believe it, yes, they got the equalizer. Yeah, and Dabritsi was obviously hunting for that goal. Oh, she was. Beforehand with the ball at the crossbar and now she's able to put it in the back of the net. Well done to be able to bring this down, take a slight touch to gain some space and put it in the back of the net. This one ended 1-1. So let's have a look at all of the results from match day six of the Champions League. As we saw big wins for Bayern Munich, as well as Barcelona, as well as Manchester United. Might I add the defending champions Arsenal got a 3-0 win as well.
47:48So here's a confirmation of the standings. the top four Barcelona, Lyon, Chelsea and Bayern Munich will go straight to the quarterfinals and then the rest will head to the playoffs that will be in February. So we've talked at length about the top four and that is Barcelona, Chelsea and Bayern Munich. But I want to focus on probably the best of the rest. But specifically, Ali, I'm going to start with you about Arsenal. I feel like we haven't necessarily spoken or taken a deep dive into Arsenal because you did make the bold prediction last time out that you did not see them making the top four. Now, they did finish just outside the top four, so they managed to pull things back in the end, but they do find themselves in the playoffs right now.
48:33So what do we take from this Arsenal that we're seeing in the Champions League? Well, I think I only said that because of the inconsistency of their performances that, you know, were occurring in the Champions League, but also domestically as well. You have two of your best players and your best leaders out. Now, you know, somewhat getting minutes with Leah Williamson, you know, holding down the back line. It's really difficult to lose one of your main center backs, one of your captains of your team, and a stalwart in the back line to be able to keep things organized and consistent. Then you have Kim Little, who was one of the best players, if not the best player, last year in the Champions League final, who was just picking, you know, balls off, intercepting passes, being able to transition to break Barcelona down.
49:14So we haven't seen too much of that in this Champions League. So missing those two key players, I think, at the beginning was really difficult. Now we see them slowly getting back into the squad. So you're going to see that change. But the defensive stability in key moments. So they just need that leader in the back line to help organize and contain some of those attacks that have been just breaking through and breaking them down. And then the ability to control games against the top competitors to be able to see a game out. So Arsenal versus Bayern Munich, for example, which is why Bayern is now, you know, in the top four, is that they beat them.
49:48They were able to come back after losing, you know, what, three nothing in the first half. And you have to continue to see the game out. And that game management is key. And I don't think that they've done as well since then. So that's why you see, you know, Bayern, you know, with that mentality in the top four. And then, you know, they weren't necessarily able to get there. So stronger game management, I think more balance between the attacking freedom and defensive structure. And then ultimately, you know, just having that willingness to want to create and be able to finish those chances because they don't happen often.
50:22Yeah, Natalia, what do you make of this arsenal and how far do you see them going in this competition? Because I feel like every now and again, we have to remind everyone that they are the defending champions. Yes, and I think when you compare before the Manchester United that I agree. They are doing a really good competition, but you compare with Arsenal, and honestly, for me, Arsenal is being like a negative surprise because everybody expects probably they be in the top four, right? I think that I agree with Ali. The no consistency in the defense perspective of the game, I think, is very hard for them.
50:58I believe that now we will see another Arsenal more because they need to go through these playoffs. and for them is something uncomfortable. You know, they need to, okay, remember to everybody, we are the currently winners. And I feel they will try to do the performance that they need to do. But honestly, I saw the team very like a disconnect, not playing as a team. And for me, the key the last year when they won the final against Barca is because they play amazing like a team in the defending performance all together when they went to attack, all together. And this year, I see good player, but as an individual, not as a team.
51:41I think they need to do their homework playing as a team. Oh, man, I absolutely hated doing homework. But anyways, looking at the rest of the teams in terms of best of the rest as well. I mean, Wolfsburg still very much in it. As we talked about Manchester United, we already talked about them. Your Juventus who you picked to get in the top four, still very much alive. And well, Real Madrid in it as well. Which of the other teams do you see potentially making a deep run? No, I do think Cuve will be able to come back from this loss. And it wasn't a deep loss, right? It was just a 1-0 where they just needed to tidy up some of their defensive modalities and be able to create more in the attack and finish those chances that they missed today.
52:23And I think the game would have been a lot different. So I do think that they're capable, fully capable of being in the top and being able to get through these playoffs. in the next rounds. Not easily, right, because it's now going to be even more difficult because it's narrowed down a lot with the group stage. So I think that they will continue to impress, but they do have to make sure that everyone's firing on all cylinders because they don't necessarily have the depth that other top teams in this tournament have, but they have the ability to be able to perform well and in the right moments.
52:58Natalie saying that it wasn't a deep loss to Man United. You're just not letting me have this, Natalie. Natalie, in terms of the best of the rest, what about you? I continue believing in La Juve. La Juve for me is one of the teams that I think that they are really, really good structured. They play really well in defense and really good in attacking. I feel like Juve and Wolfsburg for me could be these teams that easily can go forward. I hope Arsenal as well, because when they play well, they bring some style of play really fun to watch. And why not your Manchester United, lady? Let's see. Hey, yes.
53:38Clock it. Clock it. Look out for my girls. I tell you, the great wall of Manchester, Fallon Tillis-Joyce. She said no. She said no. We'll see. We'll see. Allie won't let me have it. No, I think honestly, like they have been impressive, right? They are young. They're talented. They're unpredictable. And there's, like, no expectation. It's their first opportunity. It's like a nothing to lose, everything to gain. So you have that mentality. And I think a lot of teams can be super dangerous with that type of mentality. So there is a chance. But when you play against the top elite teams, like a Barcelona-Leon, they're not there yet because of the lack of experience, I think, within the team, just because of how old the team is as a whole.
54:19Wusa, then. Wusa. It's all right. We'll see. We'll see. I love being a disruptor. All right, well, let's have a look at the upcoming schedule, because like we said, we still have a little bit of a break right now from the Champions League until next year. And a couple other teams have some breaks, too. But all of the action in the first leg of the knockout playoffs starts on the 10th of February and the 12th of February. And then one week later, we will have the second leg. Yeah, I mean, we get to see this two or three times. I mean, what a brilliant goal. Obviously, one of the game winners here. Just a slight little flip back post right over the goalkeeper. I love this so much, and well done. Well done from Sammy Kerr, and she just walked it off casually No, she's used to doing that.
56:45In at number four, as we said, Arsenal haven't been very consistent, but one of their consistent stars is Beth Mead, and it's so good to see her doing things like this again, Ali. Yes, and this is such a good build-up play, right? Alessio Russo plays the ball wide, and then Mead sees an opportunity to cut inside. That's what you should not allow happen as an outside-backed player's cut across you. She was able to put the ball on the back of the net. Well, let me tell you, Roma scored a plethora, plethora of goals here today, and we didn't even get to talk about it. But have a look at this one that went against them.
57:22Yeah, I think just the giveaway in midfield and then the reaction, unfortunately, wasn't great from the defence. This defender here obviously kind of turns and gives her more space. Goalkeeper couldn't probably see that side netting. Well done. And in at number two, Jessica Park of Manchester United. This was a great one, Ali. Yeah, she's one of the creators of the team and obviously can put the ball in the back of the net anywhere in and around the 18. You never want to leave her alone. She's such a threat, and this is exactly one of the things she can do and do brilliantly. I'll take that all day, every day, Jess.
58:03But there can only be one. And, oh, my days, it had to be this one, Ali. Yes. Just to be able to create that little space, right, the little combination played, the one-two around this defender, to kind of give yourself that ability to take the ball into that space and to release a shot like this, to be able to see the goalkeeper out as well. That is just the vision of that as a young midfielder at that level is brilliant. Natalia, did you have a favorite goal from today? Vicky Lopez, but he's not in this series. I'm so sorry. Oh, we should have found a spot for that one because the way that I tell you, she left those defenders back in her birth year, which wasn't too long ago.
58:51Wasn't too long ago. Well, but if I need to choose one, I will choose Sankar because I'm so happy that she's coming back to the game and scoring the way she does. Yes, indeed. All right. Well, thank you so much to everyone for hanging with us. Thanks, as always, to Natalia as well, my girl Ali, who showed up in her sparkles as well. We are feeling festive. It is Christmas time, but we will be back with more Champions League action in the new year. And also on Christmas Eve, make sure to look out for the FC Rank Women's Special hosted by Christina Alexander alongside Ali and Natalia. You cannot wait to see it.
59:28But until then, it's happy holidays from us and we will see you in the new year.
