In short

Main focus is the Supercopa El Clásico in Jeddah, debating whether Hansi Flick’s Barcelona have become the “master” of the rivalry, and whether Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid have found the right identity. They also cover FA Cup upsets, Premier League/Serie A/Bundesliga results, and Africa Cup of Nations.

Guests

Gab and Jules Grey (co-hosts). No other guests are mentioned in the transcript.

Key claims

  • Barcelona under Hansi Flick have won five of six Clasicos and “always win” big finals.
  • Real Madrid’s approach (flat 4-4-2, defensive shape) is confusing and lacks enough attacking control; goals came from Vinicius and a chaotic set-piece.
  • Barcelona’s system is “Flickian” and too effective: Rafinha, Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Lewandowski create decisive moments.

Notable examples

  • Barcelona’s Pedri-to-Lewandowski assist; Rafinha and Yamal’s chance creation.
  • Mbappé’s limited role (unfit, used late) and Asensio’s header from Mbappé’s cross.
  • Other headlines: Man United FA Cup exit vs Brighton B; Tottenham lose to Aston Villa; Inter–Napoli 2-2; Bayern 8-1 Wolfsburg; Arsenal 4-1 Portsmouth; Man City 10-1 Exeter; AFCON semis set (Egypt vs Senegal).

0:35I'm Gab, he's Jules Grey Skies over West London but that's okay because we're here to brighten everything up in the magic of the FA Cup Jules, the biggest upset statistically anyway in history, the Holgers Crystal Palace going out Manchester United and Spurs also going out, that's not quite new some might say, if they're mean we got word that Michael Carrick could be on his way very exciting Inter and Napoli, what a game, 2-2. But we got to start with the Clasico, Supercopa, Jeddah. This game was, I thought, super entertaining. And I thought it was also a little bit of a throwback. Marca said that, oh, Real Madrid becoming Mourinista.

1:22With Kylian Mbappé unfit, he only played like the last 60 minutes or so. So it was a more defensive Real Madrid that gave the ball to Barcelona. Yeah. And maybe if those early chances, Vini and Gonzalo Garcia. Yeah, those two. Could have worked. I don't know.

1:40Julien Laurens:It's a tricky one, I guess, because you're right. The lineup like creativity, Adagulo was on the bench, for example. And there was a bit of a mystery around that because straight from the Mourinho dark arts catalog, they announced that he's starting. Yes. And then they say, oh, no, he's not starting. Sorry, human error. Yeah. So I don't know exactly what happened there, but the fact that he's still on the bench until the 70th minute or something like that, that you had Kamavinga and Bellingham central to a mini as a center back. You have Valverde as a right midfielder. So he left really Rodrigo, Vinny, and Gonzalo as your three attacking players.

2:18Julien Laurens:And I'm not sure the flat 4-4-2 works anyway. This is something that Xavi has done for quite a few weeks now. I'm just not sure in a game like this especially works. Although Real Madrid were in that game until the end, right? They came back twice. And even at 3-2, they have the two best chances right at the end. It's just a shame for them that it's their defenders. It's funny because on television, at least, I mean, you described it as a flat 4-4-2. And it looked that way at times on television. it looked to me almost like Valverde was almost as a right back for long stretches. Chorameni obviously was pushed all the way back as well.

3:01And it looked to me like Rodrigo and Gonzalo, their job was to go and disrupt Pedri, which to some degree they did. Although in the end, you look, it's Pedri who does Pedri magic and lays on that perfect pass to Lewandowski, for example, when you get 2-1.

3:15Julien Laurens:Yeah, no, I thought Rodrigo on the left-hand side was interesting because that's his best position really again. And Vinny has played more central with Mbappé. Usually this time it was with Gonzalo because as we said, Mbappé could not start. They flew him over the day before to play 15 minutes and touch the ball eight times. What's the point of taking him from Madrid to Jeddah for that? I don't really understand. Sponsor? No, maybe. I can understand they wanted him to start. He didn't feel like starting. They took the more caution approach, which was the right thing to do, but it's still a bit weird.

3:46Julien Laurens:and without Kylian, it's all down to Vinic really to do things on his own and to be fair, to some extent, he did. Six months in, it shouldn't be that way. And that's the thing which still gets me. Yeah, you can point to the chances and whatever, but in the end, Real Madrid's two goals. One is Vinicius doing a fantastic, fantastic stuff, the nutmeg on Julkunde, whatever. The other one is basically a goal mouth, you know, set piece, goal mouth, stramble, chaos. I, I, we go back to this, it's nearly seven months now of Xabi Alonso. What are you working on? I don't know, because also the team keeps changing.

4:24Julien Laurens:We thought Goula could be the answer. You know, he could dictate the play. He could be the guy that is at the heart of everything. And then he's benched for a game like this. So maybe, okay, you wanted a more defensive approach. Maybe. But even that, as we said, it was hard to really understand what Xabi Alonso was trying to do outside of just give the ball to Vinny and Vini's going to go one, not even 1v1, because there was often two on him or three on him and just do something like that. When Mbappe came on, although he didn't touch the ball much, as we said, but he made his cross for Asensio's header.

4:57Julien Laurens:He was involved in the Carreras chance too. But it's just, you're right. It's just not enough with the ball. Why is Bellingham there for? Why is Bellingham's job? Why is Valverde's job in a game like this? You know, all of that. I think the positives for Madrid is that you show that they can be humble and follow defensive orders anyway, at least in the classical, which is a small step forward. I feel remiss. We haven't mentioned Rafinha yet. Two goals, phenomenal performance. Yeah, yeah, him, Lamine, even Lewandowski on his goal, to be fair. I think this is a game that could have finished 3-2.

5:29Julien Laurens:It could have easily finished 7-5, 7-4 for Barcelona because they were still creating enough chances. And when those three are like that, especially Rafinha and Lamine, Lamine had moments after a quiet first half hour, I think it's really hard to stop them. So it's about you scoring more than them. I have to say, this was a very entertaining game. Yeah, it was great. We saw two great games Sunday night. Jules, I think we've been very consistent this season in pointing out the flaws in Real Madrid and the flaws in Barcelona. There is a difference here. Both teams have flaws. One of these teams, despite being under financial restrictions, despite having had a slew of injuries, despite having a, I think, a horrendously constructed squad, especially at the back.

6:17Despite the high line, despite all this stuff, despite the 50-year-old center forward, Hansi Flick's team, they've won five of six Clasicos. You said before, eight of eight finals. For Flick, yeah. Incredible. The guy always wins.

6:30Julien Laurens:He always wins. Champions League final. We have to give him credit. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Champions League final, cup finals like this, Super Cup finals if you want anything even the World Cup final if you count him as an assistant coach it's just remarkable really. And if you don't count the final game in the group stage was it 2018? So I agree with you in the sense that I think Xabi Alonso and Real Madrid although they were in until the end for me took the wrong approach and maybe on a more attacking approach trying to get the high line, trying to attack more, they would have lost 4-2, 5-2. We will never know.

7:14Julien Laurens:Because this Barca team, as we've been saying all season long, you can do damage to it. But in a game like this, where he had his two wingers in great form, he had Pedro in midfield that makes your life so easier as a coach, I would believe. Then I think Flick and this Barcelona team are still right now too good for Real Madrid. and yeah, Real Madrid won the Clásico in La Liga a couple of months ago and there will be one coming up at the Camp Nou in another couple of months. But on a game like this, I just think there were no match. I struggle to say this because, like I said, I've been pointing out, you've got to take the good with the bad with Flick and stuff.

7:56It's frustrating because the bad, I think, is very flexible. You don't need to change your philosophy. Just, you know, as I said, don't spend money on Rashford, spend money on Defender, all this stuff. but he keeps proving the critics wrong in the sense with the results. Yeah, with the tight zones. You could put this the other way and say, actually, maybe Real Madrid are really bad and Barcelona only first through inertia and we watch these games every week. And when we get stronger, Garcia saves you another week. Yamada, something amazing. But, you know, over time, when you keep winning, I think this squad deserves credit.

8:34And because, again, I go back to this. I look at it and I ask myself, other than Rafinha, Yamal, and Pedri, John Garcia, you want to put him in there if you think he's risen to that level?

8:45Julien Laurens:Yeah, very soon, certainly. I think a fit Balde and maybe a fit Koundé. Who else is outstanding? And some might say Kubarsi. And you know what? I don't think he's there yet. I think he's worse now than he was a year ago. He's just not conceding, right? Yeah. When you look at all these other elements in there, right? Fermin Lopez, who they wanted to get rid of, who does a phenomenal job when he plays, but then you break him down individually and you say, eh, at least I do, right? Ferran Torres, right? Dani Olmo. His system makes all these guys shine. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Especially if you play into their hands.

9:23Julien Laurens:But in a way, whether you try to defend, a bit like Real Madrid on Sunday night, whether you try to attack like Inter Milan, let's say, in the Champions League semi-final of last season, it's tricky to beat them. Inter did, and maybe it was a miracle from a Chelsea, whatever it was, they did. PSG attacked them this season in the Champions League and they won away in Barcelona. But there's also teams who tried to attack them, who got beaten. There's a team that tried to wait for them. Chelsea beat them too. Yeah, Chelsea beat them too. Enzo Maresca. Hey, where's he now? Enzo Maresca. So you can have a go at them, But you know that they will attack and attack you and they will have that kind of pressure, put that pressure on you.

10:07Julien Laurens:I think they're a wonderful team. I don't know how far they can go outside of Spain, again, in the Champions League. Because for me, this is all, not all that matters, but the four points clear in La Liga with a home Clásico to come, I think they will win it. And because Real Madrid and Xabi are still struggling to find their own identity, was the best 11, not relying too much on Kylian, all of that. I think Barca would win this. Okay, so it's another huge domestic season. They probably win the Copa del Rey and everything. Fine. The Champions League will be the one, really. And let's see what kind of approach is the team that play them now, now that it matters, not so much the two games in January, but from February onwards, playoffs, quarterfinals, like 16, et cetera, et cetera.

10:55You talk about identity, and there's no question that Barcelona have a very marked Flickian identity. And you can say he has a 12-month head start. Oh, that's not really 12 months. It's probably more like nine months because Charbonneau, of course, took over in June.

11:15Ramadri shapeshifted for this game. They went with a far more defensive outlook that they would take even against another big team. Like if they were playing Bayern, I don't think they would play like this. they specifically chose this it's a one off I don't particularly like it but in a one off game you can understand it maybe it gives them the best possible chance to win but when we go a little bit more surgically into this are we taking for red that if Arda Guller doesn't start you don't have any kind of creativity other than individuals running at people we saw Bellingham carrying the ball we saw Vini carrying the ball it's either that or it's a set piece yeah yeah

11:55Julien Laurens:I know and it's sad to say because really we expected so much maybe too much of Xabi Alonso knowing how difficult it was probably going to be to work with his dressing room compared to the by level dressing room not so much in terms of talent because this is a more talented team obviously our squad but in terms of having those players doing exactly what you want them to do maybe that's why you play Vini and Mbappe as a front two because otherwise it doesn't really work out of possession that's why you play that flat four in midfield whoever is there because it's the easiest way of defending especially with all the injuries that you still have in a way defensively and that you certainly had even more recently but he's struggling to find the right formula for these squads and he might not find it between now and the end of the season so what's what's the next six months for this team how far can they go in the Champions League can they really catch Barca in the league and what do you work on?

12:52Julien Laurens:Because you know what? Yeah. If you say, if you're a champion and you say, okay, you go to Florentino and you say, maybe this is an idea. You say, but I see, we know all the issues with this team, the way the players are together, whatever. We have outstanding players. This is not why you brought me far. So, in the Champions League, I will put out a team that does whatever it takes to win and we might win ugly. We may have to defend and then Mbappe does something special or Vini invents something or it's a set piece and so on, I'm going to be, in the Champions League, I'm going to be Ancelotti stroke Zidane.

13:26Yeah. In La Liga, we give it up this year. We'll finish second or third. Don't worry, we'll still be back in Jeddah for the Champions League. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it's going to be 19 training sessions. There's going to be 19 games where maybe our stars don't play because they don't fit the system, where I'm going to try to impose my patterns of play, my system, because this is the only way we can learn and it's the only way the players can fit into it. Yeah. And it means we give up La Liga. I mean, it's a fantasy. No, no, no. I don't believe it's going to happen. I don't know what Florentino would say if he said that because there's no guarantee you'll win the Champions League.

14:06But to me, I see this as the only way out because if you're trying to constantly shoehorn and you're constantly making adjustments, even Mbappe becomes a problem for you, a good problem. Yeah, yeah. But in the sense that, you know, when it's nil-nil the way to Alaves or whatever, and you're like, oh, how do we do this? Okay, last 30 minutes, everybody just give the ball to Killian. And the scheme's got the window. True.

14:29Julien Laurens:But which is what we've seen already this season, you know, before. Even the defensive approach, because we talked about Mourinho and the Mourinho's Real Madrid from the past, they probably had those players. You could play Pepe as, you know, you're holding midfield during that midfield three, and he would break everything. I don't think they have those players either. So he wouldn't... And, okay, maybe just no other goalie in this team was because it was against Barca and he wanted to be more still in that midfield. Okay, maybe it makes sense to how many... One-off game, Classico, we can live with that.

15:03Julien Laurens:Yeah, maybe. But they just need Arda in this team. Otherwise, I don't think it's ever going to work, really. Well, we'll be monitoring this. But just again, as a neutral, I was very entertained. Yeah, it was amazing. First time, especially because second half, I think Real Madrid run a bit off gas. They definitely, and it was quite hot, I think. Yeah, yeah, yeah. From the reports.

16:46All right, enough Supercopa. How about some quick hits instead? Let's go, Gab. Manchester United are out. OUT out of the FA Cup after falling at home to Brighton's B team. 2-1. Jules, any positives other than Shea Lacey, at least until his second yellow?

17:03Julien Laurens:Yeah, because I thought Sesco scoring again is good for him. I know he missed a couple of chances, which he always does. Bit of help from the goalkeeper. True, but still, I think there was some passage of plays that were interesting. I think, again, Bruno as a 10 makes such a difference in what you're going to do instead of Bruno deeper in the weird system that Amorim had before. However, Brighton could have scored five goals easily in this game. And I know United could have probably have scored another one too. But you're still so open. Manuel Ugarte cannot play in this team. It's not possible.

17:37Julien Laurens:Well, Kobe Maynou, I thought, in this first half hour before running out of gas, it's normal, the guy played 30 seconds in the last six months. But, you know, created stuff. He's still so good on the ball. If you can get him into this team, it would be interesting. You say Brighton, but is it still Brighton when there's no Donk, no Weaver, no Van Hecker? So defensively, but you said B team, certainly defensively. No Baleba, no Kaoromitoma, no. No, true. True. You would say there was only like three or four starters to the usual team. No, no, you're right. Absolutely. And you can't be Burnley. You can't be Brighton at home.

18:12Julien Laurens:This is... To be fair to him, it's two games. You're a caretaker. The other thing, to be fair, if you play 4-2-3-1, which makes more sense in some ways, Mau and Matthias Cunha are very good players, but they're essentially number 10. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. That's the problem. Yeah, yeah, completely. You put them on the wing, they're not going to go past anyone. And for Chele, he's a very talented young 18-year-old. But don't, because you could see on his lips after the second yellow, he was like, what for? What do you mean, what for? You know what you got sent off? The first tackle is a yellow.

18:40Julien Laurens:The second one, you throw the ball. It's a yellow. For everybody, why an exception for you? Don't say to me, what for? Why am I sent off for? I think, I'll say this about him, yeah. So he put a post out there. Yeah, yeah, he apologized. And I think once he calmed down. No, he was going to cry on the pitch, you could tell. Well, you know, look, I don't know if he's ever been sent off before, but he's played football for a long time. He knows at any level, even you 14, if you do that, you're going to get a second yellow. A bit more disappointed there in Ferguson. Well, common sense. No, no, no. We want consistency.

19:07That's it.

19:08Julien Laurens:Gab, some good news, though, for United, according to reports, Michael Carrick's appointment on an interim basis until the summer is not imminent. It's good news because it's Michael Carrick and not Ole Gunnar Schoer. Absolutely. I'm all for it, too. Yeah, look, he's obviously a popular guy. I think the key here is you have to be disciplined. You say, Carrick, you are my coach until June. I don't care how much, whether it's Gary Neville or Scholes or any other former United player in the commentariat comes out and says, oh, give him the job now because you win six or seven games in a row. That's happened with Solskjaer.

19:51You shut them up. You say, Michael Carrick, maybe one day you'll be back, but you're a guy who, you know, you've managed at Middlesbrough. You did great in your first season. You finished eighth. And then you were tenth and you got sacked. Maybe you're not right for us right now. This is the plan. This has to be the plan. And take your time and choose the right permanent manager. Do not let them sway you. None of this. Give them the job. No, no. We don't do this anymore. Yeah. Holders Crystal Palace are out of the FA Cup Upset 2-1 by Macclesfield Jules, statistically, it's the biggest Upset in the history of the competition

20:28Julien Laurens:That's right, Macclesfield in the 6th Division of English Football, so they're not professional Players, if you just, they all have another job Beating Crystal Palace The holders, one embarrassment Really, Oliver Glasner said it himself It's a disgraceful performance From a team like Crystal Palace To go and lose like that amazing day fairy tale for macrosfield who not that long ago were about to disappear to be fair they did disappear this is this is this is a phoenix club there's a new owner came in put a new you know they got the registration essentially this is not macrosfield town yes for the uh it is very true football pyramid nerds out there yeah absolutely but a great great day their greatest day in history obviously and the worst day ever the nightmare for crystal palace liam rosinio rose to a 5-1 away win at Charlton on his debut.

21:16Julien Laurens:Gab, what did you make of it? I made of it that I think it was pretty much the team that Maresca would have put out, the players you would have put out. He's exactly the same then against Cardiff. There you go. You know, so that's why you get a big dose of Marguiou and Facundo Buonanotte and people like that. I don't expect to draw any conclusions from this. I don't think he said, I'm going to be my own man. Of course he's going to say that. At the same time, in the real world, Chelsea, assuming they stick to their system and their business model, they're going to want to do things a certain way, which is the way Maneska did them for a long time, by the way.

21:52And he accepts it. He's worked in the system. Let's see if we can do a better job of working within these restrictions. The system, which, by the way, it's not a system that's a structure. It's not designed to ruin Chelsea. It's designed to help Chelsea. Let's not forget this. Yeah. But let's see if he can make it work. Do you know what the scariest sound to hear on the factory floor is? Silence. That means something somewhere broke. Tottenham Hotspur fall at home to Aston Villa 2-1. Jules, the only domestic clubs they've beaten at home this season are Burnley, who are in the relegation zone.

23:39First game of the season. Brentford, which is his old club.

23:42Julien Laurens:Yeah. And Doncaster Rovers, who I believe are in the relegation zone in League One. That's right. Time to move on? He would get more time before moving him on. Okay, the first half was horrendous, and it's not the first time where he clearly, in my eyes, struggles to get this team going and get the crowd going. The second half was a bit better. Sonny the Odeberg goal I think is a really nice goal. Matiste was good, I thought, on the back of the goal he scored in midweek. And then Thomas Frank makes those substitutions that make no sense, that almost killed the momentum of his own team. And as a coach, aren't you supposed to just read the game and know exactly what to do.

24:27Julien Laurens:Not to do that. It was so counterproductive. I just didn't understand it. It's a defeat. It's another defeat. They're out of another competition. It's not good enough. What he's been doing. A bit what we said about Xabi Alonso, he's been here since July 1st. And yet, he doesn't know his strongest 11. He doesn't know what he's doing. I think time is ticking. The other worrying thing for him, and his perspective, is of course the people who appointed him, Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici. one no longer has power and the other one's on his way. Scott McTominay comes as big as Napoli hold Inter 2-2 draw in a Serie A top of the table clash San Siro.

25:06Julien Laurens:Baga, Montagnaconte is absolutely furious about the penalty that put the Narrazzurri ahead 2-1. So furious. I mean, that was beautiful to watch. Yes. He went ballistic. He shouted into the face of the fourth official. It kind of felt bad. He went head to head. Oh, yeah, but like, what's this guy supposed to do? I know, it has nothing to do with the decision. I'd be angry too because Napoli played really, really well. Yeah. The penalty incident is one of those things where I think we have to blame ourselves for the fact that this is a penalty. So it was a typical kind of step on foot situation.

25:42Sure. And the reason that these are generally always given as fouls these days is that people break metatarsals and it's considered dangerous, duty of care, all this stuff. However, anybody who's played football at any level will say that feet get stepped on all the time. It is natural and organic. What happened here was Mkhitaryan just nixed the ball ahead of Rachmani. Rachmani comes down on part of Mkhitaryan's foot. The referee, I don't think, the referee didn't give it. I don't think he saw it clearly. I don't think either. And the VAR says, hey, did you see this? And he's like, no, not clearly.

26:20I'm like, alright, why don't you take a look at it? Once he takes a look at it, there is a very hard protocol that says this has to be given. We're responsible for this. This is the problem. People say, oh, why don't we make more common sense? Well, if you start adopting common sense refereeing, then you get a lot of angry fans, a lot of angry media creating false equivalences. Why didn't you do this? Why didn't you do that? So I think we only have ourselves to blame for that. Shame for Conte because Napoli played really well. They went a goal down.

26:48Julien Laurens:Very early as well. Nine minutes, Federico Marco. And they got back into it. They got back into it. They played better in the middle part of the game. Scott McTominay's equalizer, nine minutes on time. Fully deserved. Great work from Noah Lang to keep the ball in. McTominay also said something which is very true after the game. He's like, well, I'd love to see how much fun Inked would have if they had to play without their four or five of their best players. Which is true. You don't often hear that from players, but it's true because Napoli, of course, without Lukaku, without De Bruyne, without André Frank, Zambon, Giza, without David Neres as well in this game.

27:29So, I thought, great advert for Serie A. Bayern beat up Wolfsburg 8-1 as the Bundesliga returns after three weeks. Jules, not much in the way of ring rust.

27:40Julien Laurens:No, and they score early and then they consider a goal and you think, okay, are they a bit rusty and then they just destroyed Michele Olisse outstanding even Harry Kane I think only the seventh scorer or the sixth scorer so even without Harry Kane they were six one up but his goal is a bit special his goal is special he is special they are they are a special team even with some players rested or some players not being there when everybody is back fully fit ready like Moussiala who should not be too long now there would be a force outside of the league he's won we've said it many many times like a long time ago.

28:15Julien Laurens:It's all about the Champions League, really. I was struck by the fact that, you know, again, we know that the players will be... Wolfsburg are not good either, let's be honest. But they look good in the first half. I mean, Midfield Pavlovich and Bischoff, it looked like they struggled in the first half. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But what struck me was, you know, normally you go 3-1 up, 4-1 up. I'm not saying you take the foot off the gas completely not to humiliate your opponents, which is what they do in some cultures, and Germany don't do that. but you don't camp out in the opposition half to try to get the double figures which is what Bayern did they had like 65 % of the possession in the second half crazy Gabriel Martinelli scores a hat-trick as Arsenal get past Portsmouth 4-1 away Gab is making his playing opportunities count yeah and so he should I mean I think there's a very real situation with him in the sense that he's only started six Premier League games this season he has so much competition for his position between Leandro Trossard Nani Madueke, Eberichie Eze, can obviously play there too.

29:17And out of all those four players, I mean, two of them just arrived. Trossard is older, shorter term contract. He has a deal through 20, 27, I believe. I think the club have a one year option. He is an asset that can be monetized to put it in a cruel way. Arsenal need to get some money back at some point. And he's 24 years old. I think he will have a market. So I was, I was happy for him. It's not his fault. He's different from the other guys. It's not his fault, but he is probably the most expendable out of those four. Jules, Manchester City destroy Exeter City 10-1 as Antoine Semenyo makes his debut.

29:54And Erling Haaland fails to score in 45 minutes on the pitch.

29:57Julien Laurens:Yeah, it's the... It's a crisis for Haaland. Well, four games in a row where he only scored on penalty in midweek. In a game like this, you would have expected him to score. He didn't. Semenyo did and had an assist as well. I think the first player since Sergio Aguero to score and assist on his City against Exeter City I don't know who Aguero did it against but I'm pretty sure it wasn't Exeter City it was not Exeter I'm sure as well but still good good debut for him we saw Rodri starting and scoring a really really nice goal McAdoo so all the kids and the youngsters Max Allain scored too the first goal I'm glad for Exeter that they won they scored sorry because at least they got something otherwise a 10-0 defeat is painful.

30:44Julien Laurens:Liverpool confirmed that Conor Bradley's injury means he will miss the rest of the season. Gab, surely, surely now they'll have to make some moves in the transfer window. They needed to do it before to get a third centre-back. Now I guess they need to find somebody who can play right back too if they think that they can go through the rest of the season with some combination of Jeremy Fringpong who's really a wing-back if not a winger, Dominic Saboslai who's an attacking midfielder and Joe Gomez who is a center back and is also your backup center back, your only backup center back. I think all of a sudden, actually, I would argue this becomes the priority, finding a utility defender, even more so, because you could argue that if Saleh goes, and that's still up in the air, you need another forward as well.

31:29Yeah, yeah, yeah. Ikitika's injured, but he's going to be back, but still. So, yeah, I think Arne needed this like he needed a hole in the head. Let's go to the Africa Cup of Nations. Egypt get past Ivory Coast 3-2, setting up a big semifinal against Senegal, who beat Mali on Friday.

31:46Julien Laurens:Jules, it's Salah versus Mane. It's the remake of that recent final, 2019 maybe, 2017. I can't remember. It would be great. To be fair, we'll talk about the other quarterfinals in the next week. But the four best teams have qualified. This is the four best teams in Africa right now that we have in the two semifinals. It's going to be amazing. You cannot miss either semifinal, but certainly not. Salah, Vimane, I think Senegal look great. Maybe have the best squad overall of the four. Mali could not really test Emily Meninger with a goal and then they controlled the game. For Egypt, the 3-2 win, like you said, was quite entertaining.

32:25Julien Laurens:Ivorico is probably playing a little bit in their hands and maybe a little bit disappointing overall. But great to see the old Liverpool duo kind of like facing off again. By the way, and I know not everybody in every territory maybe thinks that they have access to these games. There are broadcasters out there. Yeah, absolutely. Where you can watch this for free legally. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's very, I mean, just do not miss these games. Yeah, and the other semifinal, in the other quarterfinals leading to the semifinal, Algeria 2-0. There could have been more, Gab, and they will face the host, Morocco, in their semifinal who hosted Cameroon with Brian Jazz scoring again.

33:03Yeah, Morocco, I think, wrapped this up, I think, in a very professional way. They are the cream of the tournament, Brian Diaz and Fuego. But man, Nigeria. Algeria and Lucas Zidane had not conceded a goal yet in this tournament. Super Eagles, I think the XG at the end was like 3.7, something absurd. They could have scored so many. And when you look at the journey that this team has been on, You look at how terrible they were in World Cup qualifying and then eventually losing that playoff. It breaks my heart that they're not going to be at the World Cup. I know. In fact, should Italy not qualify, I invite my friends in Saudi, invite Nigeria, invite Italy, use that nice stadium in Jeddah.

33:50Actually, maybe not in June or July. Maybe it's too hot. But yeah. In Neom where you can ski or whatever. It's a shame. They were fantastic. And while Lukman and Oseman get the headlines, they're so solid at the back now as well.

Well game, wild ending in Frankfurt on Friday night, Jules, as it finishes 3-3 between Eintracht and Borussia Dortmund.

35:57Julien Laurens:Yeah, well, Greg, to start your weekend, if you watched it, it was 2-2 already with kind of two late-ish goals, you know, past the 65th minute. But then, at the time, it was just incredible. Dahoud scored against his former club, obviously, to make it 3-2 for Frankfurt. And we thought, OK, this is it. They've won a very open game, a very good game, I thought. It was a very, very open weekend in the Bundesliga. Like, literally every door, every window, everything was open. in every single game if you watched it. And then Chukumwenka in the 96th minute I think he was on a goal that really Frankfurt should have done much better and not conceded.

36:34Julien Laurens:But probably a fair result in the end that draw although Seru Girassi still hasn't scored I think in the Bundesliga since the end of October. So there's clearly some issue there but at least Dortmund salvaged that point. Karni Chukumwenka is playing he's improving leaps and bounds and I wonder looking at Chelsea's midfield and their options. I wonder if this isn't actually somewhere in the smartest guys. I know, obviously, it was done for the balance of the books. But this is the risk you run into when you let guys go. Second straight draw for Milan. Held 1-1 at Fiorentina. And they could have lost this one, Gab.

37:07Julien Laurens:If not, for my boy Magic Mike. Yes, your boy Magic Mike saving off Moise Ken after Nkunku's equalizer in the 90th minute. And your other boy, the crossbar, somehow attracting Brescianini's header. otherwise Minam would have lost this game this is funny, Allegri's getting slaughtered now because basically what he did is he rested a whole bunch of starters, right? Modric Rabiot Rafael Neal Bartosz Agui who's basically a starter now and in the first half and he did this, obviously they have no Champions League no Coppa Italia either but they're playing Comum next midweek so he says like, oh let's just give a breather Fiorentina aren't good and then they're like, oh look you idiot, you rest these guys and now we drop points.

37:52Well, actually, Mina played well and they attacked. And in the first half with the other guys in, they actually did well. I'm sorry to say Christian Pulisic had a rare, really bad game. He missed two sitters. And that's what screwed everything up for Allegri. And I'll be curious, to me, I think the reaction from Allegri is now to be even more conservative going forward, which is not what they need. No, no, we need to see the Allegri in this game and you just have to kind of live with it. Leon win 2-1 at Lille in the Coupe de France, and there's a debut goal for Hendrik. Sea jewels, being in John Texter's warm embrace, is already making him better.

38:29I'm thinking, to really capitalize on Hendrik's talents, when Florentino steps aside, maybe John Texter should change the statutes at Real Madrid. Maybe he could be the Real Madrid president. That's a great idea.

38:42Julien Laurens:Let's put that forward. Then you can just not pay for transfers. We're not sure how much Hendrik had to do with John Texas since moving to France, but certainly in this game, we were not sure if he would start or not simply because he hasn't trained much with the team and obviously hasn't played for much at all in the last six months or so, but he was outstanding. Not that he touched the ball much. I think he had only a few, I think he had eight passes in the game and not many touches in the box, but he scored one, was involved in the other one. He looked really good. Paulo Fonseca was very happy.

39:16Julien Laurens:he's going to make this Lyon team already a good team, so much better because he's very good and very talented and Ligue 1 would feel easy to him even if this was the Coupe de France and Lille are a good team. Already you saw with Harley not training and have hardly played the last six months, he's already this good so early on. So it's very, very exciting. I think if you're a Lyon fan especially. And he's hugely, hugely motivated. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Villarreal, Villarreal, 3-1 in La Liga and Gab, if they win their game in hand, they'd be one point behind Real Madrid and five behind Barca in the table.

39:50Julien Laurens:Are we sleeping on them? Their game in hand, by the way, is against, I think it's Levante away, which you assume is more than manageable. I think we are sleeping on them. And I'll tell you why. Real Madrid have so much dysfunction right now. And obviously, even if they don't follow the suggestion I made earlier in the show, that treat La Liga like a big training session and focus on winning the Champions League of the Copa del Rey. it's entirely possible that they drop points. Barcelona five clear, obviously, that would be more of a challenge. And they've been disappointing in those big games.

40:24Julien Laurens:I think they lost to Barca, lost to Real Madrid in the first half of the season. That is a difference between the two, right? Yeah, exactly, absolutely. That said, some historical context. I think I'm right in saying that, obviously, Girona finished third a couple of years ago. So even having somebody other than Barca Atleti or Real Madrid finishing in the top three is a very rare occurrence. Even more rare, if they can just make up that point on Real Madrid and win their game in hand, of course, they were to finish second. You know when the last time somebody other than Atleti, Barcelona, Real Madrid finished second?

40:58La Coruña, maybe? No? No, it was 2007. It was Villarreal in 2007. So you're going back 18 years. That tells you kind of what the significance of this would be. I think essentially we haven't given them more love because they've been so terrible in the Champions League but they're going to get knocked out that's fine they're out of the Copa del Rey this is it every week to prepare avoid injuries you can do this and you can even take points off the top two I think this is the goal Marcelino has to say yeah absolutely

41:28Julien Laurens:and they were without okay Pepe didn't make the Ivory Coast squad for whatever reason but Gueye is there Pap Gueye yeah with Senegal and he's been outstanding for them so they are probably without one of their best players too? Probably the best gay in the world, right? Yeah, right now. You take him ahead of Idrissa? Yeah, I think so right now. Bayer Leverkusen gets trounced at home by Stuttgart 4-1. Jules, were we getting a little too excited about the turnaround under Kasper Hulman? I'm still excited, Gav. It was just, and again, I mentioned, we mentioned the Bundesliga crazy weekend that they had with all those goals and nobody defending ever.

42:03Julien Laurens:This was the case. Stuttgart scored all their four goals in our first half. It was one of the best first half from one team I've seen in a very long time. Their XG, I think, was 2.65 for that first half. And every time they went forward pretty much, they were a threat. Either they scored, I think they had seven shots on target in the first 45 minutes. It was unreal. Unreal how Bayer Leveson, I don't think, expected that kind of wave, basically, coming at them all the time. They could not respond. They could not keep the ball. They could hardly do three passes together. So it was a wonderful first half.

42:36Julien Laurens:Then the game was gone. I think in a way it's probably a good warning for Hulman and his players because they were doing much better because they want to wear CT for example in the Champions League and all of that that is still a lot of work to do especially against teams like Stuttgart who throw everything going forward and have players in numbers in your box and it was great to watch really really great to watch also Bayer Leverkusen without Maza that's a little bit like Wham without George Michael you lose something you lose a lot but he's going to be back now that Ajay obviously have Roma, Abisaswolo, 2-0, with late goals from Manu Kone and Paris Bonenbrode, of course.

43:12Julien Laurens:Thank you, Gabby, for mentioning it. And Mathias Soule, not so much Paris Bonenbrode. Gab, they're back up to join third. They are, although, of course, the teams ahead of them have played one fewer game. Yeah. Again, though, this was, I would say, maybe the first game where they played really well and they created chances and created chances throughout. Sassuolo are not a great team, but they're a tidy team. They're away from home. we are seeing glimpses of what Gasparini wants to do. And it really makes you wonder, do they really need to go back into the market? Can you just not make it work with Ferguson and Daldbeck as his alternative?

43:48Yeah. Arsenal have hired our old pal Thomas Gronemark in a consultant role, reportedly. Jules, he was once Liverpool's throw-in coach, and this is when, I think this is when he came onto people's radar. Throw-in coaches were not common at the time. Let's face it. They're still not common today. I think he's cornered the market. I think he's the only one, as far as I know. Arteta doubling down on set pieces?

44:14Julien Laurens:Yeah, Nicolas Jovert will do the boards. I don't know how you differentiate, if there's a word to differentiate the set pieces that are throw-ins and the set pieces that are corners or wide free kicks. I think Ron Mark has been consulting with quite a lot from elite teams, to be fair, since the Liverpool days. Liverpool were the first club, but then after that, he worked with a lot of teams. He did. He might still do now. I don't know. It's all about marginal gains for Mikel Arteta if you can get a little advantage on your opponent thanks to Gronemar's expertise in throw-ins. It's more in terms of ball retention than really scoring every time you've got a throw.

44:49Julien Laurens:It's just not to lose the ball when you play the throw. I think Arteta will take that. Let's see. Maybe we, you know, against Chelsea in midweek or next weekend against Forest, we'll see like an amazing combination on the throw and we'll say, okay, here it is, you know. Yeah, you're right. It is about, I think it's more about like coming out of it with efficient possession. My old pal, Ted Knudsen, who has also done something like this. Yeah, I love work like this, yeah. You make the point, yes, there is the exciting side. You've got Michael Coyote just chucking the ball accurately and flying to the box.

45:25And it's like a corner kick. Yeah, that's one side of it. But also when you think about it, you have a situation where everybody stopped. so you can actually have a set play of movement, people running, like running a play in other sports. Yeah, exactly. Two touches, you free somebody up in space. I think that is the value add that he can bring. My question would be, though, how much training time does Ateta have to give up to Gronemark? That's true. I think that's always a struggle because, you know, they only train so many times and you have a lot to cover in your training sessions. Yeah, yeah.

46:00Julien Laurens:Michael Keane's three-game ban for pulling Toulouse hair has been confirmed, Gab. And yet, David Moyes is still furious. Can you understand why? No, I don't. And I say this as somebody who I really love, David Moyes. I've had the privilege of knowing him for a very, very long time. We just don't see this. I don't watch the video. You have a large man with a long ponytail, and you have a player pulling his hair, consciously pulling his hair. You can see his arm grabbing the hair, pulling the hair down. You cannot have this in football. This is not a coming together. This is not being touched. I'm not suggesting Michael Keane is a dirty player or he's a bad guy.

46:43Maybe he's like a kid away with whatever. But to go and to continue complaining about this, this just makes no sense. It's impossible to accidentally pull somebody's hair. It's just not possible. Francesco Farrioli is one of the managerial bright young things in Europe. So weirdly, he has left each of his last two clubs, Nice and Ajax, after just one season. Jules, he heads the league with Porto in the Superliga. And now he got himself a new deal. Do you think this means he might actually stick around? Or Porto is going to magically collapse at the end of the season and they're going to run him out of time.

47:22Julien Laurens:This time will be a proper collapse. They won 16 and won one of their first 17 games in the season. That's the first half. I actually played pretty well last season. True, true. And we'll see. I guess the two games they lost, one against Forest in the Europa League, weirdly, and another one, I think, against Guimaraes in the Cup. But he's doing an amazing job. I think he's Villas-Boas, who is now the Porto president, as we know, just making sure that if a bigger club wants to come and get him, then obviously they will have to pay a little bit more. In compensation, This is just an extra year. So 2028, from 27 to 28.

47:57Julien Laurens:It's not more than that, but it's also a reward for the great job that he's done for now. As we said, he's got history, obviously, of collapsing. So do you think that this is who Manchester United will have to pay? Yeah, right in the summer? Yeah, when they look for the next exciting young coach from Portugal. I know, imagine that. Avelino beat Sampdoria in Serie B 2-1 to solidify their mid-table status. begabbed. That's not why we're talking about them. No, we're not because the referee in this game awarded a penalty late. We're 2-0 up. There's like five minutes to go. There's a foul. Kirubini on Salah.

48:34Is it inside the box? Is it outside the box? 28 replays on VAR. How long was that? I don't know, but if you have to look at something 28 times to make a decision, something is seriously wrong and I am more pro-var than just about anybody else but for me the real message is it's not so much you know oh they shouldn't have intervened because it's not obvious no you referee if you need to look at 28 replays you need to be better trained on how to look at a replay and this is part of a professional referee's job in this day and age now. Veteran France international Estelle Cascarino was all set to make her debut for West Ham who were facing Chelsea in the Women's Super League.

49:22She was not allowed to come on.

49:25Julien Laurens:She was not, Gab. She was ready. She had warmed up. She was there with the fourth referee about to get on for a new team because she was loaned by Juventus to West Ham only a few days ago. When the referee spotted, or the fourth referee spotted, the earring that she had in her ear, and as you often if you watch games and pay attention to subs, whether it's men and women, you often see the fourth referee checking the hands because you can't play with rings, the studs, but also the neck, so you can't play with necklaces and stuff like that. But clearly, this was a problem with the earring. You can cover it usually, but clearly in some leagues because she was allowed to play with it, I think, in Italy, but also I think in France, if I remembered well, but clearly not in England.

50:11Julien Laurens:Also internationally. Yeah, I didn't know it was different rules. It's also, it's not just like an earring that you pop out. It's like an earring that's like, it's almost like some of it is inside her ear. And essentially, it's not meant to be removed. She needs to go and see like a specialist to remove it. So I don't know what it would have made a difference. They were 2-0 down at the time, ended up losing 5-0. When it rains, it pours. Bruno Fanon's account on X was hacked this weekend. Yes, and somebody thought they were very funny and made fun of Ineos. sent me a whole bunch of silly posts.

50:46Manchester United's official account has to say, Bruno's account has been hacked. Please don't engage with it. Blah, blah, blah. I guess it's always a risk. I don't quite understand with two-factor authentication is it really that easy to hack an account? I don't know. I hope nobody hacks me. Anyway, Joel, this brings us to an end but it is a really, really big midweek of course the Africa Cup of Nations semifinals, the League Cup semifinals, Chelsea and Arsenal plenty of other stuff going on so join us Thursday in fact you'll be away, you're on assignment Thursday you're going to go see Flo
