0:28I'm Gab, he's Jules. for Milan. But we're going to start down the road here at Stamford Bridge. Aston Villa beat Chelsea 2-1. They have now won 11 games in a row. I think it's something like 19 of 21 since September that they've actually won. Is this Unai Emery's genius? Was this Unai Emery's genius again? His dark arts? I think he for me made a mistake by not starting Onana in midfield, that Buendia, Tillemans, Camara was never going to work, even with Enzo playing in the double pivot with Caicedo, which is what Enzo Maresca, who was suspended in the stands, decided to do. And for an hour, really, there was only one team on the pitch, and that was Chelsea, who probably should have been 2-0 or 3-0 up easily by then.

1:20Could have had a penalty that we're going to discuss later. Took the lead and looked so comfortable until Emery realized that he had to change something and did so on the hour mark and to be fair to him his substitutions from Sancho to Onana to Watkins all worked really well but I think Maresca not responding to those substitutions also let his own team down right now Unai Emery is my coach of the year um I think it's undeniable we talked about everything that happened in the summer in Monchie leaving the start of season they have you I don't think anybody can argue when you have a team that's punching so far above their weight given everything they've been through.

1:58However, I can't really reconcile that first half in which Villa don't even manage a credible shot on goal of any kind. That's terrible. And you're playing Chelsea. You're not playing Pep Guardiola's Barcelona. The substitutions worked brilliantly and it wasn't just changing this guy for that guy because they said they also tweaked it. They moved Tielemans, I think, a little bit further forward. On the other hand, you look at his bench, and again, this is to praise Emery. Of course you're going to bring on Watkins. You're losing. Of course you're going to bring on Onana. Again, why he didn't start, I don't know, maybe the flu, whatever, but Amadou Onana I think is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

2:49I'm a huge fan. but I think just as much was the Chelsea's collapse and the inability to play with the lead and look, maybe I'm being a bit biased here it's easy to pick on Maneska but I think you have a serious issue again, in the way this team was constructed you have an issue in midfield you've gone on about the Enzo-Caicedo partnership equally though, unless I want to put Cole Palmer on the bench I have to play or play him wide. I have to play those are the only two guys, those are my two best midfielders. Unless I want to bench Kassid or Enzo, which I'm not going to do. So at the back, Bernaud Bajajil, I think, is definitely responsible.

3:34He's one of the goals. Yeah, it's a mess, but it's a revolving door there, whether it's him or Fafana or Tosin. Chalaba is asked to carry that back forward because Colwell's out. And up front, the lap is a work in progress and or work not progressing, arguably Joe Pedro is not a center forward to lead the line on his own. And, you know, I don't like labels and Mark you is 19 and not ready. And so we can go back to, well, why did they send Nico Jackson away? Why did they build the team in this way? And what options does Maneska actually have to make things better? Because you can get away with a non-scoring center forward, a movement type Joe Pedro, if your winger score, but other than Pedro Neto, none of these wingers you know if you take Neto out of the mix, Chelsea's wingers have scored two league goals this season I know so I kind of want to give them the benefit I know, true I agree with you on this, we've said it already before on the show but I go back again to my Enzo points and I would have no problem for Enzo to be benched or certainly Enzo should never finish a game like this Fernandez you're talking about here not Mareseka to be clear yes sorry sorry sorry wondering yes yes or Francesco Lee um but but we've said many many times before Enzo Fernandez can play deeper in that double pivot role with Cayetido or Lavia whoever else you want in games where Chelsea will control and Chelsea will have the ball and he won't have to move too much blah blah blah once O 'Nana came on and and Aston Villa got better there was no room for him and yet he still finished the game in that position he was obviously this massive signing, one of the early signings, a signing that kind of came, I think, before Chelsea kind of did their pivot towards the, you know, Hoover up all the youngest town.

5:25They were still young when he came. You're very adamant about this, that he cannot play, you know, he can play against a bad team that sits back.

5:40I'm on the same page and I've been on the same page and I think Enzo Maneska is true because we've seen him in certain games where it's Rhys James or theoretically Lavia Andre Santos I think was supposed to fill some of those roles, he's not been good this year so we've seen less of that but you have a serious problem you have a serious problem unless you want to drop Colt Palmer or turn Palmer into a winger or a center forward even which I don't know that Palmer at center forward is a great idea I like him receiving balls in different areas and maybe if you had more prolific wingers Palmer could be the kind of center forward who drops off and lays off as it so let's park that where we're yeah that's not real Palmer is a winger Palmer on the right coming inside which we saw a little bit I think under Pochettino does that come into play to accommodate in so i don't have in so attend i don't i think you can do it at times you'd rather drop in so yeah i really do it's not not for every game because i think again they are games where you could have palmer in the turn enzo in that double pivot with kay cdo because kay cdo on his own can do all the dirty work and then enzo basically is another number 10 so you've got enzo and palmer as your two 10s if you want.

6:59That would work. But again, in games like this last 30 minutes against Villa, games against Arsenal, games against City, Enzo is just not mobile enough. He's just not hardworking enough, I think. He's maybe not physical enough, probably, to be able to win that fight in that midfield against Rice and Zubimendi, against Rodri, let's say, if he's fit, and somebody else. It's not just having a big guy there, because Caicedo is the Rodri or could be the Rice and stuff. I just don't think that... I think you'll have to carry Enzo in midfield in those kind of games. And I think Mariska sees it like us, hence why Rhys James is probably the most likely of partnership with Caicedo in those top games in Europe or in the league.

7:49But then that means Enzo goes to the bench. If you don't want Palmer at centre-forward, you don't want Palmer at right wing, and you're not going to drop Palmer, even though he hasn't really been at the level he was at before. I want to ask quickly about the penalty incident, which was glossed over last night on the FC show. Everybody seemed to agree it was 100 % a penalty. A ball comes in from the left-hand side. Ian Mattson is with Pedro Neto in a battle of the Giants at the far post. Yeah. Madsen's arm goes out to kind of, as you're taught to do, to check Neto's position. Neto's not, he's not looking at the ball, so he's obviously not intentionally going to handle it.

8:36On the other hand, the ball strikes his arm and gets it out of the way from Neto. And if he doesn't do that, then Neto's got a free goal.

8:48Philosophically, this to me is more of a penalty. His arm is out. I know. And he gets a big advantage from it, whether it was intentional or not. No, no, I can hear that. Absolutely. I thought that the way Madsen turns, and you're right, Cheikh's where his arm is dead because of the way he's defending. He's not really in an unnatural position because of the way you defend. And he doesn't even see the ball coming over his head. So I think he would have been harsh. I think he could have been given easily. You wouldn't have had a problem if it was given. No, but I also thought this was the right call.

9:20Or, put it differently, adding the ref doesn't give it like he didn't give it. You don't overturn it. I think he gives it. You don't overturn it either. I think that makes sense. Let's get to the Chelsea center forward situation because it is January. We've both been harsh Nico Jackson critics when he came in. We both recognized that he really improved last season. Now, did he improve well enough to be the center forward of a Champions League team? I don't know. But what I can tell you is Nico Jackson last season was a darn sight better and more productive than anybody who has played center forward for Chelsea this year.

10:03And I think part of it is Joe Pedro is not that kind of center forward. He's probably more of a second striker, number 10 type forward. And so inevitably, in games where he doesn't have the space, where he can't make his technical ability make the difference. I think he suffers against physical defenders. The lap has contributed nothing since arriving, which again, understandable. You're very young. You come from Ipswich, although he was at a big club before in Man City. You've had issues, the red cards, blah, blah, blah, injuries. That's fine. But Chelsea need to get into the Champions League now.

10:39They can't kind of wait on the lap and say, all right, that's fine. Let's write the season off and give the lap minutes and mark you whatever. But then why did they sign Joe Pedro then? Because they could not have signed him for, you know, playing as a 10 because you've got Palmer and Enzo really ahead of him in the picking order. If you had to pick, okay, my first number 10 is Palmer. If he's not there, I'll play Enzo there. And then if he's not there, I'll play. So you don't spend 50 million pounds on a player that is your third choice number 10. So you must have signed him to play number nine.

11:10I don't think so. I think in certain games, I think they said we can have him at nine. I think they thought that Joel Pedro could play wide in certain situations, and this is before they went on the spend. This is before they got Gittens and Garnacho and stuff like that, and all that went out the window. They still needed another forward because they weren't sure about the lap. So they didn't want to bring, as I understand, they didn't want to bring in somebody who was a lap type and could get in the way of the laps pathway. Because remember, Gu is also the lap type. I think it much worse, the lap type, but whatever.

11:50So they didn't want that. They wanted somebody who was a different profile. I mean, this was their thinking. I'm not saying it's right or wrong. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Remember, too, they need an alternative to Palmer. Enzo, yes, maybe he's more effective at 10 with his runs. I mean, personally, I think Enzo's best in a 4-3-3 where he's one of the inside midfielders and runs forward. Ainslow doesn't have the creativity, the passing that Palmer has, the goals that Palmer has. Joe Pedro potentially has that. I think that was their thinking. But the situation we're in now where the lap is not contributing and you can't contribute, I think this is where you really have to question whether they should bring another forward.

12:31So they let Jackson move on. I said at the time, Nico Jackson's progressed. Yes, Nico Jackson can play wide for you as well. Remember, it became so imperative to have, you know, somebody with Sigitin's profile, left side, blah, blah, blah, whatever.

12:48I think they need somebody up front because it's important to finish top four. Yeah. And you cannot have this situation. Joel Pedro's also had injuries and whatever, as has Palmer. I don't think bringing Jackson back, I think, I don't think it's something they're going to do because Jackson moving to Bayern with that, with a big loan fee, that was about balancing the books again because they have perpetual financial stability rule issues. Also, Bayern could potentially say, yeah, what do we need this guy for? You know, Leonard Carl's a real thing and Musiala's back. But still, if you're talking back up, center, forward, you know, it's him, right?

13:30The one guy, and maybe you can introduce him a little bit more. We've talked about him before on the show. So Strasburg fans, of which there are many, will know who he is. Emmanuel Emega turns 23, or is already 23. Yeah. Scored, I think, 24 goals last season for Strasburg. He's joining Chelsea in the summer. Yeah. Is there any reason why he can't come over sooner? Unless there's something in the contract or the pre-contract that they've all agreed. I'm sure you can change considering it's the same owners. Yeah. I can't see why unless you don't want to weaken Strasbourg for that second half of the season in Europe or in the league.

14:09Although they already have in Panickeli a very good replacement who scored a lot of goals already in Ligue 1 in the first half of the season. But, and again, I'm not sure if Emega right now is ready for this kind of level. Chelsea, Champions League football. He's just made his debut for the Netherlands, for example. He's never played in Champions League football before, only Conference League this season. But he's certainly a very confident guy, as we've seen already. So he would probably fancy the challenge and feel like he's ready for it. He's been outstanding since he moved from Australia to Ligue 1.

14:47Really, really outstanding. And again, Ligue 1 is not the Premier League, but he's been incredible in his pace and all the runs that he makes. He's finishing, he's good. He's very confident. So with the ball, dribbling abilities, no problem. It's just how quickly can you get to that level? He's not a the lap profile center forward from what I've seen of him. He's just a better version. He's not a target man. Well, but he doesn't have physicality in the lap. No, no, yeah. But he is a proper center forward. Yeah, yeah. You know, he's less technical Lewandowski type. Yeah, probably something like that.

15:25and maybe not as good in the air. I don't think he's as tall as Lewandowski. No, but yeah. But he's a real center forward, unlike JP, unlike Joe Pedro. And then you use Joe Pedro as your game changer or whatever. I think this would make a ton of sense if you can't spend money, and I don't think you necessarily should spend money, if you're Chelsea. And I think that would move the needle. Speaking of moving the needle, if you're Aston Villa, again, another team that's had all sorts of financial stability rules problem, you had whatever chaos they had in the summer Monchi leaving Evan Gasson and Bizeau coming in really not much else and guys who haven't really contributed Harvey Elliott's contributed even less if you're Emery should you go upstairs to Mr.

16:11Cavill and say like hey this is the situation now I think we can win the title but even if you don't believe me I know for a fact we can get you back in the Champions League look at the table However, I'm in a situation now where if Morgan Rodgers gets injured, I need cover. I need cover. And as long as we're alive in Europe, my squad is really stretched. He has better covers than Buendia or better covers than Guisson or Sancho. Yeah. So we need an upgrade, right? We brought in Elliott as cover and he's contributed nothing and our price maybe should send him back to Liverpool. Can we do something?

16:45Would you do it? Would you spend? Yeah, if they could, I would, for sure. I don't think they can. that their wage bill is already massively high compared to their revenue, like a crazy number. The loans for Elia and Sancho is because they just could not sign players, not just them too, but players overall permanently either. So I don't know how much financially they can do and it's not what they've earned in the Europa League so far that could change this. You could gamble, I guess. You can gamble on the fact that if you get in Champions League next year, top four, Or realistically, I mean, given it's a Premier League, we're talking top five.

17:20Yeah, yeah. I think the lead over is what, four points? I don't have a table in front of me. I think they're sixth clear. They're sixth clear of fourth? Yes, I think something like that. I'm probably maybe sixth or seventh clear of fifth. So you're in a situation where you can make the argument, let's eat this up. Yeah. And then it'll pay for itself a year from now. Although, yeah, they've done it before though, right? Only a few seasons ago. and yes, they went to the Champions League and they went to find the Champions League, but they're still in a very precarious position right now. So I think they'd be, I would think they'd be cautious, but yeah, you should go.

17:57And even the number nine position, because a year ago, Watkins wanted to leave and they could easily have agreed a deal with Arsenal for him had the price had been right. And John Duran obviously, you know, left the club. Then he's Malen, your backup, who is a bit hot and cold at times. you've got Guisson who can play there. Watkins on Saturday comes on for the last 30 minutes, touches the ball eight times in the Chelsea box. Four of those eight touches are four shots, four shots on target, two goals. The first one is lucky, and there's even a double touch on that one. But Emery seems to be up.

18:33If you also, people above Emery say, listen, we can't invest. We can't spend money. We don't have it. It's too dangerous. our wage bill is already 90 odd percent of the revenue it's just crazy you have to do with this but so far every problem that this Aston Villa team has Emery found a solution whether it's Buendia off the bench to beat Arsenal whether it's Watkins off the bench to beat Chelsea Malin off the bench to win at Brighton the starting 11 the Camara goal against Wolves all of that where you don't know where it's coming because they are they're not playing well not great stats are not great.

19:07I don't know how sustainable this is. The other line numbers are not good. Yeah, I don't know how sustainable it is, really. But in those 11 games in a row, or 19 and 21, like you said, which is probably even more impressive, they've had one good half there, one good 30 minutes there. But overall, they haven't been the best even. So I don't know if they can continue that. But there's also a second half of the season where Emery keeps doing what he's doing and they win the title. It's happened before. It's happened before.

20:01Thank you. Take it up. All right, enough Villa. How about some quick hits instead? Let's go, Gab. Arsenal stay top with a 2-1 win over Brighton. Jules, if they win the league, especially by two or fewer points, we may remember that David Raya saved off of Jankouba Minte as a turning point. Yeah, we could. I was at the game, and I was right in the line of that shot and the incredible save. And maybe Arsenal still win it, even if he goes to 2-2. But that was an incredible save in a game with Arsenal. I thought we're good. controlled it all apart from those 10-15 minutes like they had against Wolves as well where they drop control, they're not sure what to do, they can't keep the ball and then Brighton who are really good attacking wise, not so much defensively but I was really impressed with some of the movement and the play that Brighton had Arsenal were still worthy winners I find it interesting just about Brighton because I wasn't there, I watched it on television and I thought until sort of the midpoint of the second half I thought Brighton were really poor, and I thought Arsenal had them in their pockets and wasted chances.

21:10But you said they looked good throughout? Yeah, even in the first half when they were under pressure. Because it's a different experience when you were there. Yeah, yeah. They were good in the first half. They were a bit naive. They're a very young team. They go and press. They run a lot. Too much. They give you space. They give you, for a team like Arsenal, everything that you love. And Arsenal could have been 3-0 up at halftime easily. The changes at halftime in TV made a lot of sense, again from Herzlouk, probably got his team selection wrong. The back five made sense, although it was the first time he did it this season.

21:41But they took a long time to work out that they had an extra man, even in their build-up phase, to use a bit more. That was the second half was better. But yeah, I think Arsenal were still the winners again. But I like this Brighton team going forward. Defensively, they've got issues because they're too attacking. I go back to the Raya thing. since narratives matter, especially in this country, if he doesn't make that save and they drop points and they slip in the second place, Arsenal over the past three, four games haven't been, I think, as good as they looked before. With some exceptions, although I thought Udegaard was really good in the first half.

22:18All of a sudden, things can spin out of control very, very quickly. You've got the witch, Unai Emery, coming over to do his black magic. I think, honestly, this was so big. And I have to say, I was not a Raya guy when they signed him at all. But what he's contributed this season, I think, is on a par with Declan Rice and anybody else you care to name in that team. Inter end 2025 leading Serie A with a 1-0 win away at Atalanta. Lautaro Martinez scored the only goal. Ballon d 'Or, Lautaro, to you. Okay, so you can look at this, see the highlight and say, oh, Inter were lucky because Jim City made a very rare mistake which gifted them the Lautaro goal.

22:58and then at the end Lazar Samozic misses an absolute sitter and that was on his left foot as well that said if you actually watch the game Inter I thought were tremendous in the first half I don't think Atalanta had a shot on shot on target for the first half or something or the first half it's Atalanta without Ademola Lukman and whatever but still bro you have to keep this pressure on throughout you can't go to 4-5-1 at the end because Lottaro's tired and invite the pressure because that is when bad things happen. Inter can produce a 90-minute performance, and I'd like to see them do that. Your boy, Ryan Shirky, would have been my boy if he'd chosen to play for Italy, delivers big time for Manchester City, who went 2-1 away to Nottingham Forest.

23:44Yeah, goal and an assist. Great goal, although maybe a little bit lucky. Great assist for Ryan Ders. I think the doku injury is beneficial for Ryan, who plays a little bit more centrally when Foden plays a bit more wider on the left-hand side. It works for Rinders too, to be fair. But in that kind of form, he's incredible. He's a football genius. I've said that many times before. The problem with geniuses in football is that sometimes, well, not sometimes, it's too easy for them. And we wondered in France when he would finally make that step up of not thinking that things were too easy, but actually having better end product.

24:23And he seems to have it now. Seven assists of the season already in the Premier League, just in the Premier League, which is the highest number with Bruno Fernandes. I don't know. I know Pepi sometimes not happy with him because he still doesn't really fit in this system and the positional player at times when they play. But what a wonderful player and talent. This is really important because they go back to this. City are still not good defensively. Nico Gonzalez is still an issue. They're still one-dimensional with Haaland. Haaland has a quiet game like he did in this match. you need something else.

24:58And Shirky and Reinders, especially in the second half, provided that. And sticking with that game gab, Sean Dyche was furious that Shirky's winner stood despite Nick O 'Reilly appearing to toss Morgan Gibbs-White to the ground. Are you angry too? I was angry and then I saw the replay and I see that actually Morgan Gibbs-White is grabbing him and it's proper wrestling. Yeah, not obvious from the first angle. I presume that's what Sean Dyche saw. I am angrier about all the stuff that happened. You know, there's a corner kicks. I don't want to see this. It's like, oh, look, set piece. Oh, look, isn't he clever that he's running into the goalkeeper.

25:31He's setting a pick. This isn't football. This isn't why we watch the game. This is why we fell in love with the game. I don't know if it's getting worse or if it's just I'm more aware of it because there's more VAR. But this is not necessary. I wish this stuff would get cold. But yes, on this one, yes, no. I think Sean Dyche, when he sees it, will change his mind. Ruben Amorim finally ditches his 3-4-2-1 system for a more traditional 4-2-3-1. and Manchester United beat Newcastle 1-0 as Patrick Dorgu scores a worldie. Jules, coincidence? Not really, no. Causation, correlation, no? It was not that convincing, really.

26:04And to be fair, I think there was, at times, not really much between the two systems. But it's a very important win, I think, even if in the second half they were defending for their lives, which I guess you take pride of not conceding against Gordon and Volta Madder and, you know, etc. Bruno Guimares and all of that Newcastle team. It's a disappointing score and result and performance from a Newcastle point of view. For Mamarim, I'm not really sure what you take away from it because I'm not sure that 4-2-3-1 actually worked that great. Koulina wasn't good. Cescou wasn't good. Yes, you have a lot of players missing.

26:38Bruno, Amman and Mbomo, already just the three of them. Mount comes off at halftime. And I think Mamarim likes him a lot. So I'm not sure where you're going. But you didn't concede and it's a big win. He could have kept the system and just simply moved Dalo to the other side. So I think that's maybe a thing. But other than that, I don't know. And sticking with that game, Gab, Newcastle pumped 46 crosses into the box. And Voltemade and Wissak combined for one shot in the whole game. What does that tell you? It tells me that maybe we need to vary things, try a slightly different strategy. Look, Nick Voltemade, we told you this.

27:18the man may be the size of a building, but he is not a traditional center forward. In fact, there was that stat, which may be fake, but I'll repeat it because I've heard enough people tell it that he'd scored like one goal with his head in the previous two years or whatever. And now he scores a couple of goals with his head, many of them with his shoulder, like his bounces off his head. It's not what the guy does. So maybe don't pump so many balls into the box. He had zero shots on goal in 68 minutes. He can give you something different. That said, Newcastle played better than Newcastle deserves something from this game.

27:55I don't want to be too hard on any how, but I do expect him now that he's had half a season with Volta Mata. He has another guy who can play up front in Johan Wiesa. Find a different way of playing. Find an alternative. Find something that works better because pumping balls to this guy's head isn't going to get you where you want to be. Florian Wietz finally gets his first goal for Liverpool. and they beat Wolves 2-1. Duels, three points, but this was closer than it should have been. Yeah, maybe. Although I thought Liverpool were very good for most of that game. It was a very emotional day with the Djokovic Jota tribute and his family and his children on the pitch.

28:32And his former two clubs, obviously, in England. So it was, I don't think it was easy to deal with the whole thing, but they did well. Vrts finally scored great assists by KTK. That partnership between Vrts and KTK is looking really, really promising. So it feels very much like their team right now. So on the back of the last two games, they play Leeds at home on Thursday, which will be very interesting to see if they continue like that. But you're disappointed by the goal you concede and it's a goal you should never concede. And then, yeah, you all look a bit fragile. It's a bit tense, the end.

29:06Although it's a big win and they're back in fourth now. And, you know, they will have to play Arsenal, I think on January the 8th, which is not too long away. but at least it's better than what we've seen earlier in the season. Vert's on the left. Can we say I won my bet? Are you not willing to concede yet? If you think he was playing, yeah, on the left and the side, yeah, yeah. Hey, off the ball at least, yeah? Yeah, yeah, off the ball, yeah, for sure. Yeah, obviously he's given, but. Yeah, yeah. Also, that guy Mane, that everybody gets so excited about, phenomenal kid, but like, he doesn't really believe in passing the ball ever.

29:42Yeah, decision making. Wow. That is often the problem. But so much confidence. Yeah, yeah. Christopher Nkunku, Paris-Borne and Bred, of course, scored twice in Milan-Bi Verona. 3-0 to stay a point back behind Inter Gap. Christian Pulisic is pretty good too. Yeah, well, it was a nervy game. Verona had the game plan of small clubs going to the San Siro. They've done really well this year. They said, like, let's just go and defend and make things difficult. Like, with Allegri, you don't really have patterns of playing. So either Modric invents something or whatever. And so it was Pulisic just before halftime who scored the goal.

30:18Do you know that this blew me away? I didn't realize. Since 2023, since he arrived in Italy, he has 50 goal contributions, goals plus assistance in Serie A. That's even more than Ballon d 'Or Lautaro. Yeah, more than everyone else, right? And I do not follow. Pulisic is carrying Milan's attack. And I do not follow why the narrative around Milan is always like, oh, but Leal this, but Leal that. Oh, Basanti Jimenez is bad. Oh, they need to bring somebody else in. Why not celebrate this guy? Yeah, I agree. Archie Gray helps Spurs and the man with two first names get a big three points away to Crystal Palace.

30:56Jules, were they lucky? I don't know if they were lucky because I thought Palace were disappointing overall like they've been for the last few games. They look tired. They need a holiday. They won't get a holiday, by the way. So I'm not sure where Palace are going, really. It was a poor goal to concede. there was two more goals that were disallowed and rightly so after VAR for offside and I'm not sure I don't think Spurs were that great either but at least they didn't concede and scored on set piece again yeah I see no progress whatsoever from Spurs other than the three points and Palace I saw they're still creating chances they're just not finishing them I think the man with two first names got very lucky Rasmus Haaland gets both goals as Napoli win at Cremonese to stay two points back.

31:42The leader's gap nine goals in all competitions for him as the halfway mark. So I did the digging on this, and I can reveal that last season he had 10 in all competitions. So why is he doing better? And by the way, he's doing better, but it's not like all of a sudden he's turned into Erling Haaland, his quasi-namesake. He has a much better coach than he had in his time than the two coaches he had at Manchester United, and it just made him a better player. And, you know, just as telling, though, forget Napoli for a second, he also has improved. Five goals for Denmark this season, which is as many goals as he had scored in like the previous two and a half years with his national side, which I think also tells you something.

32:19Interesting to see Romelu Lukaku will be back very soon. I think we're going to see them together in certain situations. Everybody seems to want Antoine Semenyo jewels, or is it mainly that he has a 65 million pound clause that is active for the first 10 days of the transfer window? He has a new agency representing him, and they want to make sure that everybody knows about it. Yeah, although everybody knew about it already. I don't think they need... No, everybody in the media, it seems like we're not talking about anything else. Yeah, but all the clubs knew that he had that release close before.

32:47This is nothing new. I think there was a lot of clubs that were kind of waiting for it. The release close would go even lower in the summer if you don't want to sign him now, although it looks like clubs want to sign him now, including Manchester City, who seem to be in the lead. And you can probably understand why, because if you've got that money and if you can sign a player like Semenyo, if you're City, of course you do. There's no hesitation. It's a no-brainer. He's a pressing machine. He will give you goals and assists. He could be an option off the bench as a starter, on the left, on the right, whatever you want to do with him.

33:18And that's what City do. You go and get Marmouche, you go and get Semenyo, you go and get Kusanov. They don't play. It doesn't matter so much. So, yes, go for it, of course. Who do you think is going to be more disappointed out of Marmouche, Doku or Savinho if Semenyo comes? I don't know. I mean, certainly Savinho is even less game time for Savinho and more importantly for Marmush. Juventus leaving late but eventually got a 2-0 win away at Pisa that takes them into the Champions League spots. Gab, haters are saying that this was an old school Juve win and they don't mean it as a compliment. Yeah, these are the people who are tossing back to Allegri's Juve where they just defend, conceded a ton of shots, you know, get a funny goal.

33:56Yeah, they got lucky in this game. They got lucky. Pisa ate the woodwork. Pisa away on Boxing Day with a full house. It's a tough place to go. I don't care that they're second bottom. They play good football. But I thought Juve deserved it. I thought Juve kept attacking throughout the game. Jagrava showed up and did something. How about that? Canan Yildiz getting second in garbage time. I think it's a big win. Let's go to the AFCON jewels. Two games into the group stage. Egypt, Algeria, and Nigeria are already through. Morocco, who dropped points. Senegal, DR Congo, Ivory Coast, and Cameroon, among the big hitters, are just about there.

34:33It kind of feels like the big nations are sort of easing into it. Yeah, true. But you'll have the best teams in third place as well. Some of the best teams in third place are going to qualify. I thought he's been a very good start of the tournament. With some big games, we had the Morocco Mali that I thought was really high level. Ivory Coast Cameroon was really high level too. They finished as a draw because I don't think there's much between those top teams either. It was good for Egypt and Mo Salah, who scored in both games, to qualify already. Riyad Mahrez was very good with Algeria to qualify already.

35:03Nigeria. Top scorer so far, Riyad Mahrez. Sorry? Top scorer so far, Riyad Mahrez. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, Demolak-Lukman looks great for Nigeria, who will be a force. So I think when we get to the quarterfinals, this will be very, very interesting. And so far, it's very good, even if Morocco are a bit under pressure before their game tonight. Nico passes the goal and assist as Como win 3-0. We're alleged to rise to sixth place. Gab, is Cesc Fabregas going to take them into Europe for the first ever time? A deflected goal with an asterisk because Lecce argued that he fouled a player before, but whatever.

35:35Nicopas is absolutely phenomenal. He may well take them into Europe. Whether they stay in Europe, I don't know because I don't know what to think of the financial stability rules that UEFA has. I don't see how Como can possibly match them given their revenue vis-a-vis their spending. Tiny town, tiny stadium. We'll see on that. But in terms of football, what Cesc is doing is absolutely special. And, you know, people are already saying, oh, is he going to go to Barcelona? Is he going to go to Arsenal? I'll tell you what, if and when he decides to leave Como, he can pretty much write his own ticket.

36:18And he's so mature. And he's still really, really young. It's time! It's time! It's texter time! We've long argued that Hendrick should leave Real Madrid on loan, and now he finally has. And he's chosen to team up with our boy JT, who may have resigned as president and CEO and let Michel run things, but you know what? Eagle Football Limited remains the controlling shareholder, and it's his! It's JT's! For now, for now. Yeah, Hendrick to Lyon. I never thought I would say those words. How does this make sense? I mean, it makes sense for him to move on, but why Lyon? Because... Paulo Fonseca speaks Portuguese yeah there's that he's a very handsome man there's already Brazilian players there like Abner like Emerson which I think is helping you out to adapt and integrate there's a great history obviously of Brazilian players playing for Lyon you know going back a few years ago and he's guaranteed to play number 9 in a good league one of the top 5 leagues in a good team that is fighting for a top 4 finish in the Europa League he wanted Champions League football but he will settle with the Europa League and I think he can take Lyon who are already doing well in the Europa League without him probably even further in the Europa League so it's very exciting from a Ligue 1 point of view because you get I know he's young but he's still a superstar a young superstar and I think he can't wait to start they can't wait to have him because they really badly needed a number 9 he should be he should be really great it's big for him with the World Cup let's not forget this is a guy starting for Brazil when he was what 17 so he needs to play to get back on the side remember that story about how Robert Lewandowski was reportedly asked not to score in the final games of his first season at Barcelona so he would not trigger a bonus payment clause to Bayern he was asked about it and didn't exactly deny it did he?

38:13I'm available as a comms consultant once I retire from this company because we said it before in Marenska's case it applies to Lewandowski don't want to answer questions, don't answer questions Don't give half answers that can lend themselves. So when the story first came out, Jules, you remember, I think we both agreed we didn't believe it. Because if Barcelona really were in that position, you wouldn't play Lewandowski and ask him not to score, ask him to go against the instincts that have defined his own career. You would have said, hey, Lewa, it's five million. We can't afford to give it to Bayern.

38:46We'll give some of it to you if you stick around. We don't need you to play. Don't play. Pick up a phantom injury, go on holiday, prepare for the summer, whatever. That's what a normal club does. That's what's rational, right? Instead, I'll just read you what he said. He says, there are things I don't want to talk about. I respect Barcelona and the people who work there a lot, which already is not a denial. He says, I was aware of the club situation. There were situations that needed to be resolved for the good of the club. It was a bonus. It was known at the time that Barcelona looked to save every Euro.

39:23It was no small thing. But then he says, and for me, nothing changed either. So I'm sorry. So nothing changes, but it's... Yeah, it changed. But it was a big thing. Because I have no problem with that. But it stuck in my head. And I wondered whether to score a goal or not. So sorry. It didn't change, but it actually changed because you won the Solasco or Solanosco. And it sticks in your head, but you have no problem with it. Yeah, but it's a big problem. It's not small. This is so bizarre. I would love to hear from Xavi on this. I'm going to speculate now because I don't believe Robert Lewandowski is lying here.

39:58I think he's just not very good with his words. I mean, we've heard him speak. No, no, I think it's clearly true that close. I refuse to believe that it was Xavi who spoke to him. I would imagine it's somebody else at the club, away from Xavi, who said this, hoping that maybe Leva would say, okay, fine, then maybe I won't play or whatever. I would refuse to believe that Xavi would put up with this. Maybe I love Xavi too much. I don't know. Jim Radcliffe has sacked his other manager at his other club. You know, the one he tends to forget about. Well, Franckes is out at Nice, and here comes Claude Puel.

40:34I guess nine defeats in a row before that cup win over second division, Saint-Etienne. Doesn't help. Yeah, the writing was on the wall, there's no doubt. Although we probably didn't expect it to be now, as they're going back to training. Because, like you said, nine defeats in a row, they could have done it two weeks ago, three weeks ago, four weeks ago, five weeks ago. They kept losing anyway. So, but it's now maybe the most surprising even is Claude Puel arrival because he hasn't coached for four years. The last time was at Saint -Étienne where he pretty much, I think, fell out with every single player in his own squad.

41:10Yes, he did some really good things at Nice in his spell there between 2012 and 2016, especially the last two seasons or the first and the last. Remember the Ben Arfa years, the great football, they finished fourth twice. And in England, too. Oh, yeah. At some point, he wasn't bad, I thought. He's a very different coach than Frank Hayes, much older. He's 64 years old, I think. Very strict. They probably need that kind of discipline. But let's see. You know, they say, don't go back with the old girlfriend, don't they? Well, and Frank Hayes offered his resignation before in November. Yeah, when there was that fight with the Ultras.

41:49He should not have stayed, I think. And he probably knew it. Nice official guy. Milan Vicomo in Australia is off. Yeah, funny that in the end they wouldn't agree to go and play with Asian football confederation officials and not be allowed to promote the game. Like, it's a stupid idea. It's back. They were lucky. Remember I said this is the problem. They have to play this game abroad because the San Sido's unavailable, because of Inter's commitments, whatever. Lucky for that. Well, because San Sido's unavailable. because of the Olympics. Lucky for them, Milan have been knocked out of the Coppa Italia.

42:28So what this means is that they have a little bit more flexibility. It looks like it's going to be the 17th, 18th, or 24th, 25th. But again, it depends on so many other factors. Will Colmo advance in the Coppa Italia? My guess is no, because they don't care. Will Inter be in the playoffs in the Champions League? This is such bad planning. This is so stupid. This is so unnecessary. Divock Origi has finally rescinded his contract with Milan and is off their books. Jules, he turns 30 this spring. He was a Champions League hero not that long ago, and he was a hugely rated youngster before that. You're Belgian adjacent.

43:13Yeah. Any theories to explain his decline? I don't really, I don't know. I think probably you lost the hunger, maybe a little bit. what an incredible career really when you think about it from like you said highly promising youngster going to Lille Young doing some really good things at Lille looking great it's not like really looking this kind of modern forward that can play in different positions up front he's a good finisher he's strong he's quite quick he's all of that and you think right yeah you go to Liverpool and yeah you become a super sub in a way which I think suited him at the time you have this incredible Champions League campaign, the Barcelona game, of course, you win it, you become this cult hero and you leave because really you're not good enough for this team and for this club anyway, which is fine.

44:04And after that, it all goes downhill really. And I don't know if it's all on him, if it's maybe some of the managers he's had, if he's, like I said, if he's just lost the hunger and the motivation, he's earned enough money, he won enough things. I really know, but you're 30. You're still not, it's not the end really, or shouldn't be the end. And yet it looks very much like, who's going to take him now? No, nobody. The knee-jerk reaction when this happens is always to go and question the guy's motivation, which I think is, I think it's kind of unfair unless you actually know him. You know, he went on loan to Nottingham Forest last year.

44:40He didn't have to. He could have just sat there and kept collecting his money. So I think he's still motivated. I'll be curious to see where he turns up next. The Daily Mail reports that the Premier League and the EFL will hold talks about lifting the 3pm Saturday blackout, which banned men's football from being shown on television at that time. Okay, you know sometimes people do the right things for the wrong reasons, Jules. I think it's the right thing. I think this is an absurdity. Completely. Based on the fact that people won't go and watch their lower league teams if Manchester United or Arsenal are on television at 3 o 'clock.

45:19on a Saturday. So leaving aside the fact that it's not that often that United and Arsenal are on television at 3 o 'clock on a Saturday. Unless you happen to live next door to the ground, there is no way that you can... There's no way you can do one and then the other, right? It's okay to have a game at 5.15, so what are you supposed to do? You go to your non-league game because there's a blackout and then you rush home to watch the game at 5.15. It just makes no sense. This is an anachronism. It's a completely different experience yeah the crowds are healthy in the lower divisions um if you are going to lift the blackout which again the reason they're doing it is just to make more money i mean let's let's be clear on this let's have something positive let's say let's borrow rules like they had in the nfl for example we'll lift the blackout for your three o 'clock game if you sell out or if let's set a target for you if you have a 30 000 seat stadium then you have to have 27 000 people there or whatever it is, right?

46:17So that you actually want more people to come to your game rather than watch on television. These are things that I think you can do and also help the fans. This country's got such a strength in the pyramid and the number of people who go watch lower division games. It's stronger than the blackout, but if you can use this to go and give something back to them, incentivize the clubs, then I think everybody's better off. Cristiano Ronaldo ends 2025 with two goals and El Nasser's 3-0 win against El Ahtoud draws 40 goals at age 40 in calendar year 2025 yeah incredible really that kind of form even if it's in the Saudi league or in the Asian Champions League it doesn't matter so much I have a response for that yeah yes you're playing El Ahtoud and whatever but guess what so is Karim Benzema so is Ivan Toni so is Alexander Mitrovic who are all younger and they're not scoring 40 goals in the calendar year.

47:14That's for sure. I give you that. And certainly this Al Nasser for Jorge Jesus with Coman and with Mane, not now, but Mane and all the other players, it's perfect for him. Joe Felix as well. Perfect. Well done. Let's see at the World Cup because really that's the only thing that matters. Let's be honest here. He's going to get 1 ,000 goals, like he said again in Dubai at the Globe Soccer Awards or Soccer Globe Awards, whatever it's called. Globe Soccer Awards. Yeah, and he's right. He's going to get there. He's going to play another year or two. He's going to get to 1 ,000 goals, which would be incredible.

47:50But really, for me, the only things that matters to him and even to us to judge him, even at that age, would be what he does at the World Cup. I don't know. When I look back, you're true about the present, but when I look back, he scored 40 or more goals in the calendar year. Our Fugazi stats, I think this is not a thing, right? But this is the benchmark that we're using, right? he's done it in 14 of the last 16 years the only time he didn't do it was one year at uve when he hit 39 and then that nightmare at manchester united when he went back i asked i asked ai like hey who scored 40 goals in the calendar year in the 90s and like before 2005 so i haven't looked at this thoroughly some nerd out there can do it and it comes up with like romario in brazil in some weirdo year he had.

48:41Comes up with Mario Jardel. Yeah. People did not score 40 goals in La Liga and in the Premier League. And it just didn't happen. Yeah, yeah. I mean, look, okay, and I haven't mentioned Lionel Messi because they always have to be mentioned in tandem. Yes, he's done it too. But what these guys are doing is just unreal. We talked about Christian Pulisic earlier, but Gab, why did he have to take to Instagram to deny rumors about his private life? because people are stupid. I don't know. So he's been in a, I don't like talking about private life, but he's the guy who brought it out there. He's been in a relationship with a woman who I think is a professional golfer.

49:20Yeah, for a long time. He's everywhere on their social media. Both of them, they're not hiding it. And yet he gets linked with Sidney Sweeney. In Italian newspapers, let's put it out. It's the Gazeta who wrote it. So Sidney Sweeney, by the way, is Pulisic, I say this, nicest guy in the world. We agree this would be Pulisic punching way, way, way above his weight. So maybe a part of you might feel that, oh, look, I'm slightly honored. But the guy has a private life. He took to Instagram to address this. He said, please stop with the made-up stories about my personal life. You need to hold sources accountable.

49:57It can affect people's lives. And I think it's pretty ridiculous. I don't know who gets their jollies from doing this, Apart from the absurdity that Sidney Sweeney, I presume, lives in L.A., like most movie stars, and Pulisic lives in a far more glamorous place in Milan. But come on now. Can we just talk? We got to bring this up. It's not the first time, not the last time, though. But having to go to Instagram to go and close. This is whatever. Jules, this brings us to an end. Yes. But don't worry. We're going to be back, not on Thursday, because it's New Year's Day, and we'd like to celebrate it with our family and loved ones, i.e.

50:37not you. Just kidding, fam. Just kidding. We're going to be back on Friday, and there will be tons to talk about because it's full Premier League schedule. Again, until then, love the game, love your neighbors, love yourself.
