In short

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah farewell and what it means for Arne Slot’s season and tactics; plus football quick hits across Spurs, PSG/Ligue 1 scheduling, and women’s Champions League.

Guests

Gab and Jules are the hosts (no external guests named). They discuss football analysis and transfer speculation together.

Key claims

  • Salah’s contract situation is effectively over: he’s leaving at season end after a new deal, with Liverpool likely letting him go on a free; closure is needed after his late-2024/early-2025 unrest.
  • Liverpool’s poor run is linked to team issues (including Trent Alexander-Arnold’s absence) and age-related decline, not “one player” alone.
  • Slot should prepare now for life without Salah, potentially using systems like 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1, because Salah’s influence is minimal this season.
  • Spurs are in danger after losing a relegation “six-pointer” to Nottingham Forest; Igor Tudor likely won’t last.
  • PSG asked to postpone a Ligue 1 game to fit between Liverpool legs; hosts argue it’s ethically wrong.

Notable examples

  • Luis Enrique at PSG preparing for life without Mbappé.
  • Mbappé knee/MRI story questioned as likely medical misdiagnosis.
  • Women’s UCL: Chelsea disallowed goals vs Arsenal; Lauren James scored but Chelsea lost 3-1.

0:20I'm Gab, he's Jules, blue skies over West London. Jules, great to have you back. Thank you. And look, I just think it's out of the way. I'm very happy right now that we are recording this on a Thursday morning. Because that means that some playoff games that might take place in a few hours, they just kind of fall through the crack. It's kind of like when you fly from Australia to Europe or vice versa, and you miss a whole day, it just disappears. We don't have to deal with this. That's very therapeutic for me. I hear you. I hear you. There's a lot of stuff going on, issues at Spurs, Killian and Mbappe.

0:57but we're going to start with Muhammad Salah yeah it's been he got this massive new contract at the end of last season he was said to become a free agent this season things haven't quite worked out that well I think was it four goals five goals something like that yeah people thought he was going to leave in January now we know he's going to leave at the end of the season he's come out and he's told us we don't know the exact terms of the deal we presume Liverpool will let him go on a free transfer I wouldn't be surprised if Rami Abbas as his agent didn't say hey also you know that 20 million you're going to pay us next season for us to leave and maybe give us a chunk of that to call it a loyalty bonus or whatever certainly if I were Rami Abbas that's what I would ask for at this stage

1:50this is good news I mean it's painful news in some ways for Liverpool but it's good news because it provides closure to a situation which had become really unpleasant in November, December and now we know we can draw a line under it.

2:08Julien Laurens:Yeah, I mean, I think it's sad news for the Premier League and for Liverpool, obviously, for Mo Salah. Nine years is a long time. I club, especially when you've been so successful and so amazing, really. We knew this day would come at some point. I think the timing and the announcement surprised a lot of people because one, they hadn't leaked, which is good, I think, for them. Really rare too. And two, because there's still some stuff to play for for Liverpool. And as we saw with Klopp two years ago, I'm not sure if it's best to do it now instead of waiting a little bit. But time will tell, I guess.

2:43Julien Laurens:But it'd be very weird without Mo Salah wearing that shirt in the Premier League. I mean, nine years, there's children who went to their first game at Anfield when they were eight or nine years old. And now they have driver's licenses, and that's all they ever knew. A long time, yeah. It was Mohamed Salah. In terms of the impact that he's had on the Premier League and where he ranks on the FC show last night, there were debates about his numbers. Does he belong alongside the very best? he's always belongs alongside the very best for me and i'm going to come out and say this i would probably put thierry henry and alan and alan sheer and wayne rooney i mean this is the conversation this is the company it's not like we're putting him a level below them are we it depends i mean it depends what you like really yeah exactly what do you like i mean for me thierry will always be the number one but i can understand some people saying rooney first some people say Salah first in Premier League era.

3:50Julien Laurens:I can understand the point for Shearer too and the goal to Salah and everything that he did for a club like Newcastle. Obviously not as dominant as Arsenal was for Thierry or United for Rooney or Liverpool for Salah even. But also De Bruyne if you want or all those kind of the guys in a very dominant city team too. So I think for me it's top three Liverpool of all time. Sure with Dalglish and Gerrard. in terms of the Premier League. Graham Souness is watching you. Yeah, but I mean, I don't care if Graham Souness is watching me. For me, he's top three, even ahead of Rush or, you know, Souness is quite low for me in that ranking anyway.

4:32Julien Laurens:In the Premier League, yeah, I think top five without a doubt. Some will have him number one, some will have him top three. I don't think he matters too much, really. He was just an absolute legend. We're not going to do a career retrospective of Mohamed Salah, I think if you don't know who he is or his story, you're probably not watching. You're probably not listening to this podcast. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Go and educate yourself. We'll have the opportunity to do it when he actually does leave and does his emotional farewell. So let's stick to the immediate. So this season under Arnest Law, because, and let's rewind to kind of what happened in the autumn or even before that obviously he and van dyke are free agents liverpool and we praise liverpool for this you know we're really really hard line in terms of saying no no no you're gonna extend but only two years we'll give you a ton of money but it's only gonna be two years we cannot lock ourselves in right there fools call it the money ball approach but basically i think it's just the Use data, use numbers, use budgets.

5:37We're running a business here. Let's go and hold the discipline. October, November comes around. Liverpool are terrible. It's not just on Salah. It's all the other stuff that we've gone over and over again. Salah gets upset because he gets benched. He talks about leaving. At that point, with the benefit of hindsight, was it wrong for them to even extend his contract and not maybe make the clean break before because what I'm interested in is to me this kind of came out of the blue like when I look at Liverpool and we said this you're right you change six players obviously there's going to be teasing problems and you know I've criticized them for the way the squad was assembled but in terms of Salah's performances Arna Slott he was tremendous for Arna Slott last year

6:30Julien Laurens:Yeah, yeah. People say he dipped a little bit in April and May, maybe. But he won the title, whatever. But they made a call. They knew him inside out. So they must have been the first ones to be shocked. Because, you know, it helps when the whole team is playing well. But, you know, you can't tell me Milos Kerkis is the reason why Mohamed Salah performed so poorly in the first half of the season, right? No, no, you're right. The absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold is, I think, a realistic reason of why Salah's form has dipped as well. Also, the fact that he's going to be 34 in the summer and that inevitably at some point that catches up on you.

7:09Julien Laurens:Your age, the fact that you don't run as much or as quick as before, that you lose a little bit of something as you get older and older. there was just no there was just no right solution for Liverpool last season if they let him go on a free it would have been chaos, the fans would not have been happy, they would have lost as in the club would have lost that to extend him, there was always a risk that this would happen, they knew it when they took the decision, they were very much aware of it, that there was that possibility maybe not to this extent going from 28 goals to 4, but they knew it was probably very likely not be as good as last season and already last season after the defeat to phd in the champion league from february he dipped massively the season before that from february onwards he dipped massively so for all the good six months first six months of seasons that he had in the last three years the second halves were never that great and that convincing either so i think the writing was a bit on the wall but again i don't think liverpool could not have extended him anywhere and now it's a question of what do you do?

8:14Julien Laurens:Remember Luis Enrique last season at PSG when it was announced that Mbappe was leaving at the same time because it was almost at this stage last year that PSG knew Mbappe would not be there the following season. Luis Enrique said, okay, no problem. Two years ago. Two years ago, sorry. I need you for some games, of course, especially the Champions League. But for the rest, I have to prepare my team for life without you next season. And if you are on a slot, and again, I don't think Arnest Lott would be the Liverpool manager next season, but I've said a month ago that I thought Salah would not be there next season anyway but even there if Arnest Lott wants to be there next season if he believes he might be there next season he will have to prepare this team without Mo Salah anyway there's no point for Mo Salah to play every single minute of every single game going forward this season it would not make much sense the difficulty with that is Luis Enrique could look around he says oh look I have all these very talented young players and I have this tremendous academy that's churning people out and they've got potential heir appearance on the right wing.

9:14And he also wasn't under pressure, correct me if I'm wrong, at the time of saying, I need to get this team back into the Champions League, otherwise we're going to have serious problems next year. Whenever Liverpool now, because Isak, who knows when he's coming back. He's back now, but yeah.

9:30Julien Laurens:But who knows what condition or whatever, right? If you play Isak with Ekitike, then you go back to 4-4-2. I mean, Liverpool's reserve right winger, unless you want to play Rion Gomua there at 16, or maybe just Kieran Morrison. I don't even know if the guy's left or right or whatever, but you know, you can adapt. There's nobody in house other than Federico Chiesa, who has a whole other raft of issues, and he's obviously not going to be your future. You want to play Frimpong there? Okay, fine. Yeah, Frimpong, Subozlai in a 4-4-2, flat 4-4-2 would work. That's where Subozlai played Assalzburg before, for example.

10:08Right, which I was told by so many people, oh, it can never work because he doesn't have the pace to do that in the Premier League. So I guess what I'm driving at is, and you raise a good point about, is Arnest Locke going to be back next season? Arnest Locke can look at this and say, well, hang on a second. What am I preparing for? I don't have the people here. You know, with Salah going and presumably Keza going, we're going to find a solution for the right wing for next season. We have to do that, right? And the solution's not here already, unless you move Frimpong there and sign a right back or put all your chips in the Connor Bradley basket once he's back, right?

10:46So he's going to say, no, no. I'm going to want to churn out results and put out my best possible team. And so I don't know that you necessarily have that preparation because you have these levels of pressure, which maybe in some ways Luis Enrique didn't have at that stage. So I would think also because you want to leave on a high, well, 4-4-2 because, as you know, I think that's the best solution for Liverpool. Salah, Niki Tike, or maybe Isak when he comes back. Maybe you ask Virch to start in a wide position. Maybe it's a diamond. But then that means sacrificing Frimpong, possibly. It's not a great situation, but there is a way forward that can work.

11:31I mean, yeah, not for me. No, no, but I'm saying it's a better situation than having this hang over everybody until the end of the season.

11:42Julien Laurens:Yeah, yeah. I don't know. You can play him anywhere, really. I don't think that would have much of an impact. You don't think you should play at all? No, I don't. It was certainly not too much because he hasn't been good. I know there's these farewell things. They are putting a lot of things in place right now to celebrate him. And that's right. He's been, like we said, a club legend and all of that. But right now, he's got no influence on this team whatsoever or very rarely okay the Brighton game in the FA Cup before you scream up your device maybe but even that so I'm not sure I don't know where he will play him of course he will play between nine and another season I would I would prepare for life without him right now find even if it's just a system even if the whoever plays on the right whether you want to keep your four two three one or four three three or whatever but at least the others would know that you know a system even if if Salah is not in it, I don't know.

12:35Julien Laurens:It's not easy, but he hasn't brought much to this team this season anyway, so I don't know why this would change now.

12:46Because it's unlikely that he would be, unless you think, okay, there's a reason that, maybe some of it is psychological, maybe used in a different role he can produce. I mean, I...

12:55Julien Laurens:He hasn't, we are in April now. He hasn't done anything this season, so I don't know why now he's gonna become the Salah of old. Well, because he's had other seasons where he started really well and then became bad, right? You told us that before. So nice and bad, so he's going to be good again. Well, it can work. It's happened before, right? I hope so. I really hope so. I hope so. I just think if you do commit to a front two, I suppose you could play Virta Niki-Tike as your front two and do a one plus one, and it's really 4-2-3-1. But then again, you still have that hole on the right. And you put Soboslai there, Be careful.

13:34Because you can also end up with a sub-slide that's completely isolated. And then you have arguably Liverpool's best player this season. Not in a situation where he's leading the team and influencing play.

13:45Julien Laurens:Yeah, he's played on the right this season and he's done well too. So it's not like he'd be a brand new... Well, I write back. He hasn't played right wing that often this season. No, no, no. But he has. He has and he's done well. Like, I'm just curious to see what Slott is going to do. Because let's be honest here. if Salah is leaving it's because the club also said to him listen we don't want you here next season I don't think the club would have even envisaged having Salah next season considering he can't form the money he's on his age they could only give him a two year deal anyway because he would have never agreed to a one year deal last year not even a one plus one probably so from the moment he signed his two year deal it was quite obvious that if that first season was not good it would be it that would be it that would be it and it was the same with Pep at City.

14:33Julien Laurens:There's a lot of those similarities when you sign a two-year deal at that kind of age. You know that it's probably the end after one. And that's exactly the position. But Liverpool are clearly not happy with him and how much they pay him for the return that they get. And rightly so. So that's also why the announcement was made. So in their head, he was already not going to be there next season. I think there are many things Liverpool aren't happy or should not be happy with right now. And Salah's just one of very, very many things. but one of the big things to me which i still have to wrap my head around everybody seems certain everybody at liverpool said that he's going to move in january right they it was incessant if you remember i said i'm not so sure because you know uh saudi saudi they're gonna come with a hundred million blah blah blah yeah okay whatever right we saw how that worked out um that was another dropped ball misreading that situation in this way and because you know what the same deal that you made now you could have tried to make with sala in in november once he was unhappy right yeah yeah um and i think there's more questions that are going to be asked there slot suture i would throw in michael edwards future because you want to be a part of it.

15:51We're going to talk about this in one of the quick hits later. But there is a lot of stuff to sort out and a difficulty for Liverpool to sort it out while really your season hinges on the league. And, okay, by the end of this month, you could be out of the Champions League and out of the FA Cup, potentially. Or you could still be in it. So not by the end of this month, by the end of April. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, I think this next month is going to tell us so much about where they're going. And in terms of where Salah is going, usual suspects are going to come up. You're going to talk to Saudi. You're going to talk MLS.

16:28You're not so sure.

16:29Julien Laurens:No, I think MLS, why not? I don't know if he would like to play there. I don't know if he wants to stay in Europe, for example. We've had those kind of players, you know, like a Modric, for example, who was very happy to try to stay in Europe and play as much as possible in one of the big five leagues. I mean, a player like Salah can't go to the league anyway, so that rude them out I don't see him going to the Bundesliga I think we would agree and nobody there can pay his wages apart from Bayern who would not want to sign him anyway so that takes them out so you left with La Liga and Serie A really sorry on the wages front his wages are now zero because or not going to be zero until he signs a new contract I think a lot depends on whether he got money from Liverpool whether he got part of the 20 million that was owed to him because that can also impact your lifestyle your desire but also he doesn't strike me as somebody who is particularly driven by money or uses money as a way of keeping score I don't know I don't know that it doesn't mean he's going to say look I've been a Lorient fan since I was a child playing for Arab constructors back in Egypt but I think he may be willing to take a step back certainly from what he was on maybe but still not there's no Ligue 1 for him or Bundesliga so La Liga and Serie A left there again I think La Liga is very difficult surely not to replace Greenland as a super sub no I don't think so but maybe Serie A I think where obviously it all really started I know there was Basel first and Chelsea but where it all started Arab constructors first yeah exactly but in Europe I mean so I don't know if like I was told that Conte and Napoli were certainly monitoring all the situation I think his agent has already been in touch with a lot of clubs and a lot of intermediaries all around Europe and the world.

18:21Julien Laurens:So we see. De Bruyne, Salah, Lukaku, if you could time travel back a few years, that'd be amazing. Yeah. Yeah. I think Napoli, I'm sure, they always try to look for value or whatever. On a free transfer? The difficulty, I think, is going to be like they don't know how the season ends. They don't know what Conte is going to want, how he's going to go. I think it's really difficult to carry those three, even with Tom and a running around like a maniac. That's going to be really, really. It's going to be really, really tricky. Milan would be the one. Why don't you team up with can you imagine Luka Modric threading balls through to Mo Salah?

19:01Julien Laurens:Casimiro is also on a free if Milan want to have a bit of like that kind of. Stop. Stop. That's enough. Enough being mean to me. Come on, man. Yeah. Stay tuned.

20:41Julien Laurens:They're the ones with the bear on the box. All right, enough Salah. How about some quick hits? It's dead. Tottenham Hotspur lost a huge relegation, six-pointer to Nottingham Forest on Sunday. Coach Igor Tudor missed the post-game media duties following the passing of his father, Mario. Condolences go out. Jules, you were speaking to a World Cup winning manager on Monday on assignment, so you missed the show. I need your view on whether normal service has resumed and Spurs are doomed because I was with Don. Sorry, I'm with Don, with Robbo. Yeah. I cannot understand how they played so well against Atleti.

21:15They played so well in the second half of Liverpool. They turned the corner and they were so terrible against Forest.

21:21Julien Laurens:Yeah, I mean, I never really believed they turned the corner. Atletico played in first gear because they knew what they had to do. And when they had to accelerate, they did. Okay, explain the second half against Liverpool. Long balls, physical. They did more crosses in that Forest game than any other game this season. thinking that that's probably we're going to win them the game. But it wasn't. And we also said after the Liverpool game that if they played like that against Forest, that would not work. And it didn't work. And I think it was pretty obvious to see that if that was the same tactics and ideas against this Forest team and Milenkovic and Murillo and Cez and all of that, it was not going to work.

22:00Julien Laurens:For me, Tudor, and it's a really sad time for him and his family, of course, out of his depth. I don't think he can keep this team up unless the others are catastrophic, which they might still be. And that's why the club is already looking at changing the manager. I don't think he'll be in charge for the next league game, which is in a while, by the way, because obviously they're not playing in the FA Cup weekend after the international break. So they've got a long time to go. Another 10 days now. So for me, he's not going to be there. I don't know who will be, but it's not going to be him. That's the next question.

22:35Julien Laurens:That's the next question, exactly. But that question is more about next season. If they stay up in the summer, it's unlikely that Tudor will be there in charge next season. So who will be? Gab, they've been linked with Iraola, with Dezerbi, Pochettino as well. What do you think? All right. So every time I read about Pochettino, all I hear is he's wildly popular among the Spurs fans, blah, blah, blah. I know he's not that popular among the Spurs fans. I know they're grateful for what he did, but whatever. so of these three roberto the zerbi would be fun but roberto the zerbi would work if you have a serious settled club above there is no evidence that the people who are in charge now they got rid of levi's of daniel levy so quickly his nonsense johan lange whatever i think injecting the zerbi into that would create more chaos right yeah he he brings some level of chaos with him right and so for that reason i would go with andoni raola um i think he's an exceptional coach he would have been my manager of the year candidate many times over over the last couple seasons um i think they have a lot of young players that he can work with they have a lot of high energy players i think that's good for him so that would be my choice yeah and i think he's he's talking to bournemouth about a new deal as we speak so i think those two things are are probably linked speaking of pochettino the u.s men's national team coach gave an interview with the keep where he talked about how hurt he was by comments that cherry on reeds our second cherry on retiti we love you yeah uh reference made about the way he used leonard messi while at paris saint germain now these comments were five years old it was leonard messi going to the right whatever i jules does it make sense to bring up stuff that a guy on television said about you five years ago And you need to share it with the keep?

24:25Well, what's the context? Am I missing something in the context?

24:27Julien Laurens:Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think you do, yeah, yeah. It was after the game against Marseille where PSG went down to 10 men and Thierry, who was a pundit on French television at the time, he's not anymore, but at the time, in the interview with Pochettino, who came on the set basically where Thierry was, so they were talking to each other directly, Thierry just wondered why Messi ended up on the right-hand side. The point that Pochino is making through this little bit there, but through the old interview as well, that he was a bit misunderstood in PSG, that people didn't take the time to try to understand what he was trying to do, that he felt with a bit more time, so he said 18 months, with a bit more time, he would have found a way of playing Mbappe and Neymar and Messi together and doing well with them and winning trophies, including the Champions League.

25:16Julien Laurens:That's basically what he said. And that he was sacked too early in his tenure and that the defeat at the Bernabeu, if you remember, like another kind of mini remontada when they lost 3-1 on the Benzema hat-trick when they were 2-0 upon aggregate at halftime of that second leg in Madrid. I'm really sorry to bring back all these bad memories for you, by the way. No, it's okay, but he said that killed him, really. After that, he knew that, despite reaching the semifinal the year before, that he knew that that was it for him, but he wished he had a bit more time, basically. Okay. I don't if you want to talk about in general terms like that but the single out sharing Henry because you know this is what I don't understand.

Read the full transcript

25:58Julien Laurens:It was a question about you know his time in Ligue 1 and he said what people didn't really understand. I understand that and I understand also from a PR perspective look the reality about you Pochettino is that you're in the US right so nobody in Europe anyway is paying any attention to you they will during the World Cup they'll judge you on that. so if every time you come out people are going to bring out snippets nobody's going to i mean unless you read the keep obviously but most people don't they're going to see the headlines that i saw which is about him bringing up a spot with terry henry from five years ago which makes you seem petty i think he needs to be more careful in how he expresses himself that's all i'm saying barcelona being linked with a summer move for alessandro bastoni gab you know i love my left footed center bags yes the giant bastoni next to the little darting pau cuvarsi that'd be pretty sexy like he's 27 years old in april if barcelona had a ton of money wanted to make the team better i think it would make a lot of sense do they have the money i'm not 100 sure not if they're talking about rashard and blah blah blah i think they need to put resources in the back maybe it's not bastoni maybe they would want 80 million 100 million or whatever for him maybe that's not the right thing to do but you have to put the resources there and bastonia by the way i think is intelligent enough, even though he's mostly played in a three, to know that he can play the high line with Kubarsi maybe a little bit better than the people who are doing it now.

27:17Paris Saint-Germain have asked the French League to postpone their big game against Lons, which is going to play a really big part, potentially. It could knock Lons out, de facto. The lead right now, Paris Saint-Germain have a one-point lead, but they have a game in hand. But this tie falls in between the two Liverpool legs.

27:40Julien Laurens:That's right, yeah. That's why they're asking for the game to be postponed, like they did with their previous game against Nantes. That was between the two Chelsea ties. Strasbourg, who also are still in Europe, play Mainz in the Conference League. I've also asked for their league game against Bres to be postponed. So they have a weekend off, basically, in between the two European legs. Leeds, um, Lens don't want to move that game. Obviously, as you can imagine, they're not in Europe, but they don't want to move that game. The problem for them is it's not their decision. It's the league that will decide.

28:14Julien Laurens:There will be a vote with all the clubs and, and they will vote about it. They're meeting right now, supposedly. Yeah, today. It's a bit later, but today. Yeah. So we will see, I think it'd be disastrous for the league to start with, if they agree to this. If they agree to move it. To move it. Yeah. So you're with Josef, not with the team you supported ever since you were Liverpool. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, I can understand why PSG wanted to move, obviously. But from a league's point of view, because you have the decision, ethically, in terms of image, everything, for all the followers of Ligue 1, and we're trying to get more and more followers, this would be such a bad decision to take.

28:51Julien Laurens:The interesting thing in this is that if PSG qualify against Liverpool and this game gets postponed, they would only have there's only one window to play this game again later in the season so if PSG qualify for the semifinal and play Bayern or Real Madrid for example whatever game they have in between those two legs cannot be moved anymore because there's no other windows so they've chosen this one more maybe than the potential game between two semifinal legs to postpone it's also because I think they know that Lance is a hell of an opponent obviously they've been the best team in the league this season and that's a very tricky game to navigate in between the two already tricky games against liverpool paris and germain would also say look um it's good it'll be good for the for the francis uefa club coefficient we'll move up we might get more teams in europe they qualify yeah that's their argument there's a real politic argument too which is a lot of these teams make more money from europe than they do from ligand right now given what happened with the television contract.

29:53But yeah, I'm 100 % with you. They should not move it.

29:55Julien Laurens:The Athletic report that Liverpool have abandoned plans to acquire a second club and move to a multi-club ownership model. Gab, there's a suggestion that this might impact Michael Edwards' future. Yeah, so the logic was that Michael Edwards agreed to come back because he laid out a plan where they would have gone to a multi-club ownership model like Manchester City, like Strasbourg. And now he may not want to stay. I mean, given the way things have turned out this season, it might be Liverpool that might not want Michael Edwards to say. In terms of the second club, the clubs they were looking at are not second clubs.

30:30Those are first clubs. I mean, they're smaller clubs in Liverpool, obviously, but they spoke to Monaco. They looked at Getafe. They looked at Malaga. I don't think this works unless there's an actual real gap, and I'm not sure it's a good idea to begin with. There's enough other people doing it. people are moving some people are moving away from it yeah so i think it's good that liverpool aren't doing this and you know michael headwins is a very smart guy but i think he showed that he was able to make liverpool successful without a second club then you know you can do it again kilian mbappe has denied reports from rmc sport in france uh suggesting real madrid misdiagnosed his knee injury by this is going to sound weird by performing an mri on the wrong leg Jules, this is a really weird story.

31:18Daniel Riolo, the guy who reported it, is highly respected and generally well-connected, right?

31:22Julien Laurens:Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's my colleague on RMC. It's a weird one. I mean, as we talked about it on the FC show on Tuesday night with Craig and Frank, when you do an MRI on your knee, a lot of listeners probably would have never done it. they put like a massive uh coil on your knee on the injured knee you can't just go into the machine like this and then they scan you and surely kylian mbappe would have said hang on guys if they put the call on the wrong knee they would say hang on my pain is in the other one not this one but you often have your headphones in maybe he was listening to music maybe he's listening to so i think maybe i think there's there's some truth in it in the in the fact that not so sure about the MRI and again I tried to get this story confirmed and I could not get it confirmed.

32:13Julien Laurens:I'm not saying it's not true, I just didn't get it confirmed. There's probably some truth in the poor diagnostic made by Real Madrid medical staff that have been sacked since by the way. And Kylian on the record said that on Monday night when he said that he got the diagnosis really late after the injury which kind of annoyed him and rightly so because because I think he played before that because the medical staff said to him that he basically had nothing and the pain would go, which was not the case. So I don't really believe in this MRI story itself per se, but I do think that the medical staff at Real Madrid got his injury wrong completely.

32:52I don't think there's any question. I also think if you're Mbappe, you're intelligent enough to know, even if the MRI story were true right now, you would not come out and say it. There's nothing to be gained. Yeah.

33:01Julien Laurens:Senegal have officially filed that appeal with CAF, the court of arbitration for sports, after CAF, remember, ruled that they had forfeited the final of AFCON against Morocco and declared Morocco the winners. What are the chances, do you think, to overturn it? I actually think their chances are pretty good because the consensus seems to be among a lot of sporting legal minds. They seem to disagree with me. They seem to say that, in the end, what matters is they came back to finish the game. I don't think it's fair. I think when you leave for that long, you should forfeit the game. I also think after 58 days, I think it's idiotic to give the cup to Morocco, just declare it vacant.

33:42But I think they have a very good chance. That's my reading of the current zeitgeist. Harry Maguire is reportedly in talks with Manchester United for a one-year extension to his current deal, which expires in June, Jules. Good idea to extend him?

33:55Julien Laurens:I mean, you know I'm not a fan. Please, I let him go. He's happy. He's playing a little bit better. He can find another club and finish his career there. Jürgen Klopp apparently does not enjoy being linked to Real Madrid, Gab.

34:31humor. The guy, you know, it's easy to forget. Klopp is still German. But yeah, dude, like, like you should be honored that they're still thinking of you. Our ESPN colleagues in Holland report that Ricardo Pepe's move to Fallon that we talked about before has fallen through.

36:21Julien Laurens:Jules, they agreed the fee. He had the medical. What happened? Well, I'm not really sure. I don't really understand what this, but basically they said they could not agree over responsibility for the player, for when the player would be transferred. So the thinking is, when does he become effectively a Fulham player? I think PSG Eindhoven says, okay, you can have him June or July 1st, or would you have him, but then the World Cup's already started. What happens if he gets injured at the World Cup? So it's one of those, it had to do with the liability. And it was funny because, so Ernie Stewart former US men's national team coach he's the sporting director he made he sort of explained these are his words he kind of explained this to me it makes no sense that you can't reach an agreement that it can't just be over whether he gets injured after the World Cup then for me he will still play for Fulham it won't be a problem but it's just I mean to be fair it's a bit weird to do it now anyway I think yeah that struck me as odd too Casemiro has been linked with a move that would seem John Lionel Messi at Inter-Miami.

37:25Julien Laurens:Does that make sense to you, Gab? From an Inter-Miami point of view? No. It makes zero sense. Look, they don't have a DP position anyway, so I doubt that he will go there. Maybe Rodrigo De Paul comes back? No, that's not going to happen. Wait, wait. Surely Luis Suarez is going to eventually... He's not a DP. Oh, that's right. He's not. That try, that is signing the summer, Messi and De Paul. No, I don't think it makes sense. He may, like, well, look, it'll be fun. Let's go to Miami. In MLS, even if you don't like MLS, you have people who run around all day long. Yeah, but he can still run around.

38:03Julien Laurens:We see that with United States. I don't know. He's getting older. I'm not going to bring in Casemiro for his passing, right? Even though he's had a good season this year, right? And he's not going to run around as, I mean, I can find some other 22-year-old dope who can run around as much as Casemiro at his age, right? So, no, I would not put my resources. We saw how well it worked out for Busquets when he went, right? So what's the point? Ernesto Valverde has announced he will leave Athletic Bilbao in the summer, Jules. Yeah, this feels like a bit of the season too many, really, or too much. He should have probably stopped at the end of last season.

38:41Julien Laurens:They haven't been great. They've had bad injuries to Sunset and to Nico, and they haven't really gone going. The Champions League was a disappointment, really. Sunset's been really bad even when he's going to fit yeah yeah but after not qualifying I mean that long without Champions League it was finally back at San Mames and they didn't do well at all and that was obviously a problem same for the league and yeah you still have the Cubs but again the semi-finals didn't go there well at all in the Copa del Rey so but still a club legend obviously you know played for them and then managed them took them back near the top qualifying them for the Champions League.

39:21Julien Laurens:The trophy draw, obviously, is there, but 500 games, is that right, at the end of the season? By the end of the season, he's going to be at 500 games. And, you know, obviously, winning the Copa del Rey after 40 years. Exactly. His place in history. And I also think, you're right, maybe it was a season too long, but it also takes some humility to know, all right, I really, it's time for me to stop. Give somebody else a go. UEFA will not consider the request made by several Premier League clubs to expand Champions League squads to 28 players. Gab, do you like this? Yes, it's stupid. I think they should actually reduce it from 25.

40:00Because look, already, it's not like with 25 players, you only have 25 players, right? Because youth team players don't count against the total. That's why if you go, I love doing this, I go on the UEFA website, Chelsea started doing this. They took, I think, everybody over the age of 10 who plays for Chelsea. There's a billion names. Then Arsenal went and did the same thing, which makes it really difficult for me because I have to scroll through a million names as I go through there, and then sort through the Maldini Kakouris and people like that. No, look, this would simply, I think it would allow clubs who are not good at handling their resources and who are stuck with an older player, like, oh no, we have to leave them off the thing.

40:41It would limit opportunities for younger players, which is not what you want. and I think it would simply make the playing field even more uneven than it is because people would just hoard talent even more than they already do. So if anything, personally, I would reduce it. I would reduce it to 23 players or something like that. You know, you have your academy, use it. Let's go to the Women's Champions League quarterfinal first legs, Jules. Lauren James' wonder goal. Not enough for Chelsea and they fall 3-1 to Arsenal.

41:13Julien Laurens:Yeah, that's true. And we'll talk about the controversial decisions from the referee in the next question. But on this one, it's a big defeat for Sonia Bonpastor and Chelsea. It's not finished and they will have the second leg at Stanford Bridge next week. We're on back-to-back Champions League weeks now in the women's game as well. Arthur Arsene were very good in that first half. Lovely, lovely goal. Curler with her left foot from Laurent James is making it look so easy as well. Which, by the way, that was ridiculous. When I sigh, I said, oh a lob oh goalkeeper too short she can't get there no no no he's not a lob no it is it is a curler at pace I think the referee can't believe how precise it is yeah amazing goal surgical that's how good she is anyway even if we haven't seen it enough probably this season or even in the last two years so that second leg Aston Farbridge will be very exciting on Wednesday can I ask you about Chelsea also and bump us in the background because there was a story I think it broke over the weekend I think it was in the Times we had Robbo on and Robbo doesn't follow women's football as close as you do.

42:14But there's unrest at Chelsea because the guy who'd been running the women's team for a long time has left the club. He was replaced by another guy where the guy from the Times actually wrote, of whom little is known, that's how they described him. Right. Which I think is not fair to him. But there's suggestion, Guru Wright and leaving. The Samantha Kerr possibly leaving. Also the Millie Bright, the big center half. Yeah. They're both in their 30s. There's a suggestion that Chelsea women's team might now follow the script of the Chelsea men's team, which is just acquiring young talent. Right. Would that mean women's football would lose another, potentially lose another big European club that can compete with Barcelona and Arsenal and City?

43:03Julien Laurens:Yeah, maybe. Although they still have a great squad right now. I mean, Kerr is not a starter anymore, and I don't think she should be either. So don't tell her, don't tell her that. No, no, but bright a bit the same. So I've got no issue if they think that those players are just not good enough anymore to start for Chelsea. And so then why extend them? Yeah, exactly. Yeah. As you know, managing maintenance, repair and operations is never easy. But for the ones who always rise to the challenge, Granger has your back. 44:24Julien Laurens:So sticking with that game gap, Sonia Bonpastor was angry at the end after the referee, after two Chelsea goals were disallowed. She said there's a lack of respect for the women's game. Yeah, so the referee in this one was... So there's two things. On the two goals. So the second goal that was disallowed was Kadisha Buchanan. She basically karate kicks the Arsenal goalkeeper, Anika Borba. You cannot do that. This one is not... That shouldn't even be in the debate. On the first one, Fairle Berman goes up for a header. There's a defender, Laia Khadina, challenging her. The referee blew up straight away and called a foul.

45:05Now, what I'm not clear on is... Sorry, she said, oh, there was nothing there, right? Her hand is on the defender's shoulder. And it doesn't need to be because she jumps higher and she's taller as well. When you do that, you always put yourself in danger. But leaving that aside, she said, when she's talking about lack of respect, this has been a long-running issue. Who should referee the Women's Champions League games? should it be women referees or should it be the best referees available yeah i think you have taken a strong line saying no no we want to develop women referees as well we want to give them the opportunities right so this woman alina pace well again i'm not familiar with i don't follow this but she has refereed men's games and she is in the group she is among the elite referees you can say she had a bad game but it's not like what were you telling me like oh no let's have anthony taylor officiate this because referees don't matter right no if you're going to go and give women opportunities in the game of football referees are part of it so focus about how you can train them simple truth of the matter is jules there are far far far fewer the proportion of women referees to men's referees is even much much smaller than the proportion of women's footballers to men's footballers so there is going to be a gap yeah so i i don't know i i didn't like it when you talk about lack of i know she's obviously at sixes or sevens right now because things aren't going great on your bumper store but i think she let herself down a little bit there valksburg without alexandra pop uh beat lyones one nil thanks for deflected lineth uh berenstein goal jules you were there i from the highlights i watched it seemed like they were a little bit

46:47Julien Laurens:fortunate yes and no uh yes because leon had a lot of chances the morning should have scored in second half, Danny hit the post. But I also think that Wolfsburg had a game plan that they executed really, really well. They had that back five and that low block very compact. And O.L. Lyon really struggled at times to find how to break through it. And as soon as they recovered the ball, they went so fast forward so quickly in transition. It was really good to see on another day could finish 1-1 without problem at all, because Wolfsburg also had some decent chances of their own. But yeah, it's a disappointing defeat.

47:25Julien Laurens:It's the first one for Eulion before the second leg next week at home and I expect them in France to overturn it. But it was a bit of a shock to see them not playing at their best and we saw Selma Basha after who said, I didn't recognize my team really. So it'd be very interesting to see how they react in a week time. They're still favorites to go through. Yeah, I think so. They should. But but Wolfsburg defended really well still. Huge win for Barcelona in the Clasico against Real Madrid as they win six to away, Gab. Yeah. The Barcelona might as well be playing a different sport from, from Real Madrid.

48:03There were five one up at one point. I think the only things that kept Real Madrid in the game is Linda Caicedo. Yeah. And again, if you're not a fan of women's football, just, just watch the highlights. In fact, if you go on Barcelona's, you don't have to watch a super long, for some reason there's like super long 10 minute highlights of this on youtube just there's the highlight on barcelona's uh official youtube channel of this game um i just watch what linda caissero does uh the first goal is it's a counter attack where she just jukes her way around like three or four defenders it's all the time in the world the second one is a finish that she just hits the ball so viciously from the edge of the box into the corner um i i don't know you're gonna tell me she's not the best player in the world right because there's others she's not far

48:52Julien Laurens:she's but she's got to be up there right yeah yeah she's been for a while though but yeah yeah when she's in that kind of form and it's a shame that obviously collectively this team is not as strong as a team like barcelona with a lot of youngsters by the way who look very very promising already wild stuff at old trafford jewels manchester united twice come from behind but momoko tanikawa's leg strike means bayern take a 3-2 lead back to munich yeah it was a bit of a story really of uh the japanese players because each team had won uh tanikawa started on the bench for bayern because japan played in the asian cup women's asian cup and won it final on sunday in Sydney.

49:32Julien Laurens:And I mean, they probably should not even have played this game because there was not enough time to come back from Sydney and then play on Wednesday. But they did. One started, the other one came off the bench, came off the bench, Tanikawa to score the winner. I still don't think there's much into it for this game. And I think if you're United, you can go to Munich next week and be quite confident that you can overturn that and win. It won't be easy, but I think it's quite even between the two teams anyway. FIFA are expected to make it mandatory for women's teams to have at least one woman in the coaching staff of all their competitions like the World Cup, for example, or the club World Cup gap.

50:12Julien Laurens:Is this a good idea? So I was surprised to learn that a majority of these teams are still coached by men, which is which is fine. Get the best coach available. But I also think you have to generate you have to generate opportunities. Now, with coaching staffs it's a little bit funny because i think we've all been around people there's generally two types of coaches there's coaches like ang postacoglu who for example his staff changes all the time right yeah um there's coaches certainly a club level where one of the assistants is kind of put there by the club not to spy on him but to have continuity and whatever and there are other coaches like pochettino who are name checking again who always has the same people with him and they're total loyalists yeah um obviously a coach has to have the right to put whoever he wants on the staff but i also think this is a slightly different situation because opportunities for women's coaches especially the ones who weren't great players are actually severely limited um i i don't i you would know you know the world better than i do but is there a high-end women's coach who is a woman who was not an international player or a high-end player no it's yeah it's quite rare um so how do we do this how do we how do we generate these opportunities if you put if you have an assistant to the assistant who's in the staff who's around these players who can learn from you i think that's a positive thing and and that's how this should be looked at it's not about like quotas or or whatever especially with national teams where you know you generally have pretty big staffs yeah um so i think this is a positive thing Jules we had mayoral elections in Paris last weekend I want to ask you who you voted for because you're probably not eligible to vote when you're Paris born and bred do you get to keep that forever?

52:00No unfortunately no but it looks like the outcome of the election will impact the sale of the Parc de France

52:07Julien Laurens:yeah I think so it could do certainly the new mayor of Paris who's Labour Gregoire who was the first assistant to Hidalgo the former mayor who didn't want to sell the Parc de France to PSG has a very different stance on it he'd be very happy to sell them the Paris de France or another option would be a very long lease really so they could do their kind of refurbishment of the whole area and build hotels and shops and stuff like that like they want to do and for the club it's it brings back the kind of dilemma that they had before ideally they would love to stay in Paris, obviously, and stay at the Paris de France.

52:49Julien Laurens:You could extend it to probably 60 ,000 seats and then do those hotels and the kind of commercial side of it still on that kind of land and in that area. But the new stadium, although it would be outside of Paris, so they have two cities, Massey or Poissy, for the people who know the geography of the of the the area then you could go to up to 80 000 seats for example you could do something even bigger in terms of more hotels more shops more everything you probably hotels wouldn't be in the 16th they're only small they'd be someplace that people don't really want to go that's very true as well that's part of the the debate that they're having and the dilemma but those new brand new stadiums probably be better for concerts for example or if the nfl comes to Paris.

53:33Julien Laurens:But isn't there another 80 ,000 seat stadium in Paris which also hosts that? Very true but this one would be obviously more modern. So there's all of that to take in consideration. The fans as we all know would like to stay there anyway. I would like the team to stay there obviously too. And maybe this new election might change that and they might actually stay. Okay so I haven't read the original reporting in France but I found this fascinating. I'm going to ask you this. It seems like they're super far away in price because I mean, to the point that it seems stupid that Paris Saint-Germain supposedly offering 40 million plus the promise of investing and the other side asking for a billion.

54:16That cannot be right.

54:18Julien Laurens:No, that was before. That was before this new election. That was a long time ago. That's really hard to bring this to you. I think the stadium, the valuation of the stadium is around 300 million right now with the Paris des Princes. obviously if you buy it at 300 million you can maybe get it to 250 then the even the cost of extending it and doing everything will still be cheaper than building a brand new stadium that will cost you 1.2 billion probably something like that or at least 1 billion very very minimum minimum uh in one of the two places massy or poissy that i've mentioned before i don't know Which one is best, really?

54:56Julien Laurens:I mean, the sad thing is, the flip side is, if you're a developer and you're going to build luxury flats there, it's probably going to be worth two to three billion. Simply because it's such a... It's a great location and it's a big footprint. The rugby club, who owns the rugby stadium? Do they own the rugby stadium across the street? The city, yeah. So that can't move. So the hotel would be on the other side. But who owns the club? Who owns the rugby club? That's a private owner. So why doesn't Nassar just buy the rugby club and build a gigantic 80 ,000 stadium there and then they can both use it?

55:35That would never happen.

55:36Julien Laurens:The Times report that the Women's Super League, the WSL in England, will become the first league in the world to use a special smart ball from next season. Gab, what superpowers will it have? It will collect data which will be made available to players and coaches and analytics nerds. It also somehow help officials with VAR. I'm not 100%. I mean, yeah, I can understand the concept that there's sensors inside the ball. It's interesting with this proof of concept because this must have been tested out at lower levels. Look, even if it doesn't work, so what? It's still just a ball. But I think they need to roll this out pretty quickly because you're going to want players to have the opportunity to train with it and work with it, you know, well before the season starts.

56:25Yeah. My boy, Matias Almeida, was fired by Sevilla on Monday after defeat to Valencia. Luis Garcia Plaza comes in jewels. He's sort of like Spain's Igor Tudor.

56:36Julien Laurens:Yeah, a bit like that. That's true. We feel a bit for Almeida, who we really like, who I thought could do well in a difficult context, really, because as you know, Sevilla is going to be all per-shap really. But they lost a club that's even more dysfunctional than they are in Valencia. That's very true. And they're three points above the relegation zone. They will play Oviedo, who are the worst team in the league and will go back down too. But this is the thing. Oviedo have been playing much better recently. And I think this is why they did it because if we screw up the Oviedo game, then the game's going fast and furious.

57:14Julien Laurens:Because there have been some good performances to be fair. I think what cost him most than anything else is that seven game ban that he got for his unacceptable attitude towards the referee. And really, he should have known better to start with. And that really, I think, caused problems to this team and to where they are in the table right now. So, let's see. Good luck to Luis Garcia, Placer, for sure. The Killers, the music band, will headline the UFA Champions League final kickoff show. Gab, is it a good idea, a good choice? between this and and and last year was it limp biscuit last year yeah they seem to be catering primarily to sort of 40 and 50 year olds um but i guess those are the corporates who go and buy the tickets right yeah so uh yeah and that's what i think compared to limp biscuit certainly the killers like it seems to me that you know gen z kind of likes the killers in a retro way like so yeah vintage you know slightly dorky but you know pretty harmless band the music's okay i'm i'm all right with it i'm okay with it that's good visitors from five countries uh who have qualified for the world cup including algeria cape verde ivory coast senegal and tunisia will have to post a fifteen thousand dollar bond to obtain a visa to enter the united states um right now um it's not clear if this will apply i mean technically actually right now it does apply not just the fans but players and coaches too i'm assuming johnny can speak to his friend surely this can't be true gab this cannot be true man you can't nobody from those countries would want to come and support their national teams and the players enjoy the world cup enjoy the us canada and mexico none well i would not think many of people from those countries could pay $15 ,000 as a bond.

59:04Julien Laurens:Well, they get it back afterwards. You have to provide it in the first place, too. It's not just... Mortgage your house. I feel bad. This is what I hate about this World Cup already. I won't lie. We're going. We're excited. It'd be great for ESPN. We'll have a great coverage of it. But I hate things like that already. What I hate about this is that it's completely unnecessary. I understand the country having its rules, and obviously they fear that somebody will come and buy a ticket to the world cup and use it to illegally enter and stay in the u.s and whatever and that's a big issue i understand that countries have a right to regulate their borders however fifa need to do a better job here fifa need to say not just go to not just johnny going and prevailing on trump johnny can say like hey look we have four billion in reserves this fifteen thousand dollars is a bond it's a guarantee we will guarantee at least the players and coaches right now, and maybe the fans who asked us as well.

1:00:00We will put up the$15 ,000 for them. We will get it back after the World Cup. And that's it. And we're not going to go and create more embarrassment for FIFA, more negativity around this World Cup. Right?

1:00:12Julien Laurens:Players and coaches cannot pay to get a visa to the US like that. They'll get the money back after the World Cup. That's embarrassing from the US if that's the truth. Absolutely embarrassing. And it's not just Manchester United keeping Jim Ratcliffe busy, Gab. He's fallen out with his old friend, Ben Ensley, or Sir Ben Ensley, actually, two sirs, of an American skip boat. Yeah, okay. This is funny. This makes together like a duo where I actually like and respect Jim Ratcliffe far more than the other one. So I'm rooting for you, Jim. So I find this story so bizarre. Why is he even a quick hit? It's about sailing.

1:00:49It's about Jim Ratcliffe and the nonsense he has to deal with. okay so basically ike as you know as you can imagine i'm not into yachts and sailing just not my bag i like to see but um so he got together with this guy ainsley who i think they decided to spend 180 million pounds to go and build a boat um to enter the america's cup which by the way i don't think they won but hey whatever um and this was with team inios which is reckless business so then then ratcliffe says okay times are tough i just spend money on united give more money to glazers i'm going to step back and we're no longer going to to sponsor this boat and then ainsley says okay fine um i'm keeping the boat i like this notion of ainsley just sailing the boat out away from ratcliffe so now there's um there's threats of of legal action and whatever ainsley saying that no you guys you pay you invested in my racing team which is called athena or something stupid like that um and the boat belongs to the team i i just underscored 180 million pounds it's more than 200 million dollars this boat is supposedly worth i say supposedly because it's a racing yacht you can't do anything other you can't do anything with it other than enter it's on like a comfortable yacht that you want to hang you know hang out in like or sell to larry ellison or whatever right it's just such nonsense and this is the problem with too many people too many egos getting involved in sports jules this brings us to an end yeah but don't worry we're gonna be back on monday talking about some um world cup playoffs yes hopefully i will good news i will be relaxed until then love the game love your neighbor love yourself
