Key claims
- Brazil were collectively poor in a 1-1 draw vs Morocco; Ancelotti’s lineup/subs made little sense (Igor Thiago starting; Hendrik not used; Ibanez as a right back; Rafinha used in multiple positions).
- Morocco were exciting and confident under Walid Regragui’s replacement Mohamed Wabi; Brazil’s defending was criticized, but Morocco’s fearlessness and attacking approach stood out.
- Morocco’s depth is limited; their attacking style may expose center-backs as the tournament progresses.
- Neymar’s inclusion was reportedly due to political pressure; hosts question the logic since he was injured and likely won’t be fit.
Notable examples
- Morocco’s midfield: Boadi (18) described as calm like a 30-year-old.
- U.S. beat Paraguay 4-1; Gio Reyna scored a standout outside-of-the-boot finish.
- Germany beat Curaçao 7-1; Japan drew/then won vs Czechia 2-1 after a comeback.
- Turkey lost to Australia 2-0; Canada drew Bosnia 1-1; Sweden beat Tunisia 5-1; Qatar drew Switzerland 1-1.
- Transfers: Arsenal linked to Ayuboadi; Real Madrid signing Marco Correa; Bayern close to Ismael Saibari; Mourinho assistant role for Sami Khedira; Milan linked to Ruben Amorim.

0:31This is the Gab and Jules Show presented by Gusto. I'm Gab. He's Jules. No clue about the weather in London, Jules. We don't need to know. We have blue skies here on the east coast of the U.S. Tons to get through today. The World Cup has well and truly started. Lots of news coming outside of the World Cup as well with transfers, changes going. But I think there's one place to start. Brazil against Morocco in North Jersey. He exits 16W. You were there. It finished 1-1.
1:04Julien Laurens:Yeah, I think it was one of the games in this first round that a lot of people were looking forward to because they're two outstanding teams, two top 10 teams in the FIFA ranking, for example. And I think, in a way, we were not disappointed because a lot of the things that happened on that pitch, we kind of expected it, really. I've seen Brazil against France back in March, here on the east coast of the US as well, and they were not very good. They were not very good again against Morocco. a Moroccan side that is far more attractive than the one that reached the semi-final four years ago, for example, or that won AFCON or didn't win AFCON, depending on where you stand.
1:38Julien Laurens:And in a way, if I was a bit not disappointed by the way Brazil played, but certainly shocked by how poor they were collectively through the whole game, even in the second half where they were a bit better. However, this Moroccan team is very exciting, that's for sure. Yeah, I think they are exciting. And I think there was a lot of pressure. I mean, I know we're going to get into Brazil and Carletto and a lot of the criticisms and Neymar and all this jazz. But I don't want to overlook, I thought, the performance that Morocco put in. Because let's not forget, they were under quite a bit of pressure as well.
2:10Expectations are so high with Morocco going into this because of the money that they've invested in their national team, because of the performances they put in, because of the semifinals last time around. And Jules, I thought they weren't cowed at all. I thought they went out there with confidence. They looked at that, you know, more experienced, if you want, Brazilian midfield. Boadi's 18 years old. He's got the head of a 30-year-old in there. Calm, like a cucumber. Cool as a cucumber, I should say. And while we can maybe criticize some of the Brazil defending on the opening goal, it's not just about Morocco's goal.
2:50It's about they showed no fear whatsoever. They played with confidence. and they seem determined to out football Brazil.
3:00Julien Laurens:Yeah, completely. And that's the team that they are anyway, especially since Mohamed Wabi replaced Walid Regragui at the head of this team. The problem, I guess, in a way, and we will see that further in the tournament, is that one, they don't have enough depth in their squads. So outside of those starting 11, maybe 12, 13 are best. The rest are not at the same level. and we saw in that second half when Brazil made their subs and when Morocco made theirs, the difference was quite striking. I thought, and also the way they play, because they are far more attacking than under Regragui, where they were much more of a solid block, this time they will concede chances.
3:40Julien Laurens:And we saw that. And for Issa Diop, who is a new Moroccan international, really, and Riyad next to him in that pair of centre-backs, it could be difficult at times, especially with Masraoui and Hakimi being so attacking as full-backs. So they're not perfect, but certainly the way they play was very entertaining in that game. And the fact that Brazil let them take charge of the game for, let's say, an hour or so, I think show you how good that was. Yeah, I think the centre-backs are potentially an issue for Morocco as a tournament progresses as well. Of course, they've got absentees as well. But let's turn to Brazil, some of Ancelotti's choices.
4:19Igor Tiago I think goes into the bucket of those players who've done very well abroad for a smaller club at Brentford. And some people in Brazil are kind of scratching their heads a little bit. Like, who is this guy? Are we sure we wanted to go with this? Certainly, I thought they looked better. Business picked up once Cunha came on. But it's not quite that simple, is it? And people are going to be asking, they're already asking for Hendrik from the start. Chuck Hendrik right in there.
4:50Julien Laurens:I mean, for Igor Tiago to start made absolutely no sense from Carlo Ancelotti. And I won't lie, we all love Carlo. He's a great guy, one of the greatest head coach in history, managers in history of the game. But he got everything wrong in his team lineup, even in his substitution to a certain extent, or when he made them. Because to start with Igor Tiago in a game like this was really, I mean, I saw Arthur clueless from Carlo. You're right when Cunha came on. Why is Hendrik not coming on? Makes no sense whatsoever. How can Ibania start a right back in a game like this? Makes no sense either. So there was a lot of issues, I think, even within tactically the team that Carlo tried to, well, picked and then have the game there.
5:31Julien Laurens:And to be fair, even if you look at what he asked of Rafinha through the first half, played or through the first hour, played him in like four different positions. It was ridiculous. Yeah, so there's a lot to get stuck into there. It's not just Igor Thiago. We'll see how he responds now. I thought Paqueta had a really difficult performance. And I was really disappointed in him. Casemiro as well. But Casemiro's getting criticism for not being mobile on the pitch and whatever. But again, we saw Casemiro play badly in this game, but we've seen him play very well towards the end of his time in Manchester United.
6:08I have less of an issue with that. Roger Ibanez was just weird. You could see that maybe in some context as a defensive stopper. But I think in this context of this game, I really sent the wrong message as well. And then on top of all that, because, of course, when it rains, it pours. A guy from O Globo reporting that the inclusion of Neymar, because we have to talk about Neymar because it's Brazil. we always talk about Neymar, that that was the result of political pressure, the son of somebody in the Supreme Court and stuff like that. And then Ancelotti doesn't really want him there. Ancelotti's used to dealing with political pressure.
6:49He's done his entire life. I don't know what to believe. I'm not saying it's right. But there's a level of self-harm going on here as well if we're going to make Neymar an issue on a team that already has so many other issues, right?
7:01Julien Laurens:Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I guess I didn't think he would take Neymar. We discussed it many times on the show before the World Cup, before the squad was announced. I thought he was inviting more pressure, more problems potentially. Now he's injured anyway. We're not even sure if he'd be fit for the second game, let alone maybe even the third game of this group stage. So I'm not really sure. I mean, he was there on the touchline, you know, shaking hands with Tom Brady and Travis Scott and things like that. This is it really? Is that why he's here? I don't know. It didn't make much sense to me. Yeah, I think we expect changes second time round.
7:37I would imagine there'll be room for Danilo somewhere in this lineup. Casemiro coming under scrutiny, I would imagine he'll keep his place. To me, the big question is up front, which of the three, Gortiago, maybe Cunha or Endrick? And does he make the changes all at once? Obviously, it's Haiti up next. and needless to say you can't screw this up. I don't think you just need a win you just need a performance in this one Jules but Jules we got plenty more to get through so to everybody watching us don't forget to tune in to ESPN FC with Dan, Craig, Ali Stevie Nichol, the rest of the guys every day throughout the World Cup coming up where we've got more quick hits to talk about Like I said, not just World Cup, but also a new face at Real Madrid, a new face at Bayern Munich.

11:35Quick Hits is brought to you by Gusto. Gusto is your small business partner for payroll, benefits, and so much more. Get started for free at gusto.com. Jules, enough Brazil. How about some quick hits instead? Let's go, Gab. The United States demolished Paraguay 4-1 to open their tournament. Jules saw my skepticism from some, including us, around Mauricio Pochettino. I'd say he answered the call and shut us up for now, but I gotta ask you, which piece of Tekkers do you prefer? Christian Pulisic teleporting between two defenders or Gio Reyna's delicious outside of the boot finish?
12:18Julien Laurens:Yeah, I mean, for me, it would have to be Gio Reyna's goal and Alamodric if you want, because Pulisic's dribbling was good, but he still pushes the ball a bit too far in a way. And then it's a non-goal that scores the goal. I think Reyna, albeit with a lot of space for him to get into the box, that finish is still very special great first half i mean he helps when you face a paraguay team that you know forgot their football at home it helps when you score so early it helps when you've got that kind of dynamism and the energy that the u.s the u.s players showed great i think maybe what again to go back to what we said about morocco what could be a problem for pochettino and his team is the lack of depth when key players have to come out including pulisic at halftime after that a little niggle that he picked up, then I think the level drops a little bit.
13:05Julien Laurens:But hey, in terms of the first start in this tournament, it was good, very good. It was great. And also, I think for us to leave this World Cup here, that was the perfect start. That's what we needed for the whole country to be really in this World Cup spirit. Yeah, I think you need to. It always helps when the hosts ignite the enthusiasm with performances like that. Germany demolished Kurosawa 7-1. Gab, I mean, they were really never in it, although they scored to come back to 1-1. But were you impressed with the Germans? Look, I think with all the questions surrounding Nagelsmann going in, I thought he answered them.
13:42I liked inclusion of Nathaniel Brown into the lineup. I obviously love my Kai Havertz, the best on earth. That said, I don't know how much you learned from this, because this was a game also the way Curaçao approached it. Curaçao said, hey, we're here. Let's have a go. Let's not go and necessarily park the bus the way we would have. And you know Germany. Germany loved to run up the score like nobody else. If they played Little League baseball, they would get kicked out. So, yeah, no. I want to see them. Look, I think this is when we'll get to Ecuador and Cote d 'Ivoire. I think the other two are going to be a completely different proposition for Germany.
14:24But, yeah, so far so good. You can only beat what's in front of you. Holland twice take the lead and twice get pegged Holland twice take the lead even and twice get pegged back by Japan, yes Japan, Jules I'm obviously going to be biased here given that I'm supporting Japan in this World Cup so I'm going to let you handle this but I suspect you're going to take issue with the Dutch guy and his inability to hold the lead and move to change formations at 2-1 up
14:54Julien Laurens:I mean if you've been listening and watching us for the last few years, both on our show, also on the FC show, you would know that I don't rate and don't like the Dutch guy at all. But again, this game, and I don't want to feel vindicated. I don't care. There's a reason why the Dutch guy is the Dutch guy. It's because he does things like we saw yesterday. And take nothing away from Japan, who I thought were really good and kept going and kept believing. Moriatsu's changes made a difference. Koeman, please, man. This idea that you have to go to a back five for the last 25, 30 minutes, 20 minutes of games like this makes no sense whatsoever anymore.
15:34Julien Laurens:This is something that maybe you could do in the 80s, but not anymore now. Those substitutions that he made yesterday just killed his team and killed the game that they had on the controller 2-1 up, really. And I think it's not the first time. It won't be the last time. I don't think Koeman is a good manager, hence why he's the Dutch guy. But yesterday showed it again. I'm sorry for all the Netherlands fans. Yeah, I kind of have to agree with you. I mean, I want to give credit to Japan. I saw Moriaz's plan. Like you said, I think even when they were behind, you know, I mean, you go behind, big verge, hey, it's going to happen, right?
16:11But I think he got into his head with this idea of these little guys in blue running around and they're so fast and they're so, you know, we mustn't get caught, you know, let's go and tighten up the defense. And I generally think he got outcoached basically this one. More to come from him, it's still early in the tournament. But I think a real morale booster as well for Japan.
16:33Julien Laurens:Shock result in Vancouver Gabas, Turkey, fall to Australia, 2-0. Tough nights for your boy, Vincenzo Montella, on the bench. Yeah, he's getting absolute pelters. He's getting absolute pelters too over Hakan Chalanoglu, who's kind of in the middle of this because I think he started his first game for the national team. or maybe his first game overall in a long time. I think he played against Colmo in the Coppa Italia for Inter. They had kind of the epitome of sterile possession in this one. Look, they were beaten by an absolute worldie from Irencunda. For the first one, Irencunda, I'm sure you know by now, everybody knows a tremendous story.
17:14You know, a refugee from Burkina Faso born in Tanzania and a refugee camp and everything and sort of this explosion of power and pace and everything. Turkey had 72 % possession, by some counts even higher. But if you don't translate that into clear chances, you're going to struggle. Having Arda Guler out on the wing seems slightly counterintuitive against a team like Australia who defended in the manner they did. You know, maybe after all, Koglu up front, not the obvious solution. I think if this game ended a draw, it would not have been a scandal. But I think Turkey are going to be disappointed.
18:01And, you know, let's not forget that they know that they're going to have to face a host as well in this. So I think the next game becomes very much a must win for them. Shout out to Australia, too. I was a skeptic in some ways. I'm still a skeptic. but three wins is just the best way obviously three points is obviously the best way to start in the group stage now unlike the other two hosts Canada do not open with a win they're held 1-1 by Bosnia Jules
18:33Julien Laurens:yeah I was there though in Toronto and what a great occasion it was first of all they made history by hosting their first ever World Cup game the 19th country to do so and then they made history another time by getting their first point in World Cup as well after losing the last three games in 2022, losing the three games in 1986 as well. Coming from behind against the Bosnian team, that was so disappointing, I thought, with the ball. They scored on the set piece. They were only good on set pieces for the rest. They tried to slow the game down. They tried to defend. And that was it. I thought credit Toronto and Jesse Marge, who made big calls in his substitutions.
19:10Julien Laurens:And even if he's not your cup of tea, for example, I really struggled with the fact that he sang the Canadian national anthem when the guy is American. But anyway, that's another story. But I think credit to Canada and the atmosphere really in Toronto was outstanding. It was incredible. It was a sea of red with a little bit of blue, a patch of blue in the stadium. But they were really up for it. And I was glad that at least they got a point. And now they play Qatar next. And, you know, with four points, they probably qualify for the next round. So, you know, good for Canada overall for that first game in the tournament.
19:40Yeah, that was a statement. I mean, whether Jesse Marsh agrees or not, he's singing in other countries national anthem in that context. I don't want to over-hug it, but it's definitely bold. Jonathan David, I thought struggling again, replaced by Promise David, with whom he's not related. But yeah, Bosnia Bosnia in this game. And yeah, maybe they could have done more, but the point suits them just fine.
20:10Julien Laurens:Alain Ahmad Diallo-Strake gives Côte d 'Ivoire a 1-0 win over Ecuador. Gab, you were there and I know you rate both teams. Yeah, and both teams kind of reinforced it. Now, I rate them for slightly different reasons. Ecuador, this idea that I think many people had, that this is purely a defensive team because of all the defensive talent that they have and everything. In fact, they only conceded five goals in World Cup qualifying. No, they can attack too. They hit the woodwork numerous times with better finishing. I think they would have scored. I think they probably deserved something out of this game, certainly in the first half.
20:47But Jules, the story within the story is Jan Diomande. I was so excited to see him in person. It's the first time I've ever seen him. He's up against Piero Incapia in that first half. Piero Incapia is going to have nightmares about him. Honestly, and it's not just the raw athleticism. It's not just get the ball, stand up your defender and try to beat him. He's just such an intelligent player as well. They talked afterwards about his coach, Amir Sved, talked about how, you know, he's so coachable, so smart. Certainly a huge performance. In the second half, he moved to the other flank, showing he can do it there.
21:23Sebastian Bekochic reacted by kind of redrawing his defense so that he'd be up against Joel Ordonez. And Joel Ordonez with help, with other players coming inside. But when he's like this, he does seem unplayable. Now, maybe he's not going to do this every week, but he did it against some very good defenders in Ecuador. Let's see what he can do in the next couple of games. Sweden demolished Tunisia 5-1 as Alexander Isak scores one and dishes out two assists. Jules, this is the same guy Liverpool fans have been waiting for.
21:58Julien Laurens:Yeah, well, I mean, it looks sharper, certainly, than what we saw in the season with Liverpool. Although he's very lucky on his goal because the keeper should have saved it. We saw him scoring a great goal as well against Norway in one of the friendly games that Sweden had in their preparation for this tournament. I thought his front two with Gokeres worked well. But again, against them, that Tunisia team and Tunisia defence was just all over the place. Unacceptable really from a team that had been quite solid to be fair in qualifications. And that already I think there would be consequences. I was hearing this morning that Sabri Lamouchi was about to get sacked one game into this tournament.
22:38Julien Laurens:I believe it's the first time ever in World Cup history, because we don't really count Julien Lopetegui in Spain in 2018. First time ever that a manager starts the World Cup and then gets sacked after the start of it. So I think that Sweden were good and it's a big win for them and good for Graham Potter. He's a little bit of the pressure, but Tunisia were horrendous in the game. Can I just say, if Tunisia sacked Sabri Lamouchi after one game during the World Cup, he can't be the only one to go. Whoever appointed him, the whole people at the top, they have to go too because this is just unserious.
23:11Julien Laurens:A late on goal from substitut, Miro Mouheim, gives Qatar a 1-1 draw against Switzerland. Gav, this would be cruel. Yeah, this guy comes on as a substitute later on. And, you know, Switzerland are doing kind of the Swiss thing. They take the lead. They have a couple more chances. Slightly dubious, I thought, the penalty. but Brea Lombolo goes and converts it. And then Kross comes in, and I don't know if he loses his bearing. He's a bit unlucky as well. And Cutter get a point. Who would have thought Cutter getting a point at his World Cup after their fine performance at home four years ago? Switzerland are going to be just fine.

23:47But I think they would have been happier, of course, with the three points. John McGinn's first half strike gives Scotland a 1-0 win over Haiti. Haiti, it's their first World Cup victory since the days of Craig Burley in the 1950s. No, just kidding. It was 1998. Jules, were Haiti better than you expected or were Scotland worse than you expected?
24:11Julien Laurens:I mean, I've watched Haiti before and they played exactly like I thought. They've got really good players from the diaspora who play all around the world, but in good, you know, in good leagues. A few of them were, you know, born in France, played in France a lot. So we used to see them if you're watching Ligue 1, you used to see quite a lot of them and the quality was always there. I was more disappointed by the way Scotland played, more than by the way Haiti played, really. And I think for Scotland, they're in a very strong position to advance now, having three points already, especially after the draw between Brazil and Morocco.
24:44Julien Laurens:But to play against Morocco and Brazil, they will have to improve massively compared to what we saw in this game. This was way back on Thursday, but South Korea came from behind to beat Czechia 2-1, Gab. Yeah, this feels like an age ago, doesn't it? I was really impressed with Korea after they went behind. We know it was going to be a set-piece situation where the Czechs were going to be most dangerous. Korea just kept going, and we know there were doubts over Hong Kong as well. um czechia maybe maybe gave korea a little too much respect maybe um i would have liked to see them get get the ball to patrick schick more be more aggressive but but korea running all over the pitch uh kang and lee coming up with a very good performance clearly he's well rested and confident uh being part of the european champions um and uh and to me fully deserve points and korea I think are another team.
25:43I mean, for me, Korea, along with Japan, probably the two Asian teams likely to go furthest in this competition. Ayub Wadi continues to be strongly linked with Arsenal in his 65 million euro move. Jules, what's Arteta's plan here? A bit of rotation in midfield?
26:03Julien Laurens:Yeah, I think they're looking for another midfielder anyway to go with Rice and Zubimendi and Lewis Kelly to a certain extent as well. And they've been following him a long time. They haven't waited for this World Cup to know that, or to put Ayuboadi on their shortlist, really. They're not the only one. PSG are the other front runners right now to go and sign the 18-year-old midfielder who, as we said earlier in our first segment, was outstanding against Brazil. He has the authorization from Lille to go this summer. He should be the big sell, like they do every year. then I think choosing the best destination for him is really important here but I think he's so talented that he would play and do really well at PhD in that rotation in midfield I think he would do really well in the Premier League because he really has everything he's one of the smartest players on and off the pitch by the way because he's still studying too that you could find he's great with all his ability physically technically in possession off position as well so I even think that 65 is a really good price for him, although his performance against Brazil probably added another 10 million to the price tag.
27:13Julien Laurens:Real Madrid have a new left back. Marco Correa is on his way for around 60 million euros. Does that make sense to you? I think it does. When you look at Real Madrid's left backs, Fran Garcia is obviously somewhat lightweight and Ferland Mendy is usually injured. So, you know, you need an alternative. of course to Carreras. From Chelsea's perspective, they were in a situation where he's going to enter the final couple years of his contract. I don't think the club were necessarily so happy with some of the things he said last year. I think Xabi Alonso would have been happy to keep him, but the club are very, very big on Jarrell Hato and the project and all this nonsense.
27:59You love him at left back,
28:00Julien Laurens:really. I'm sorry? You love Hato at left back as well, so you'd be happy? he hasn't sold me on it look maybe they see something i don't look what matt what that is more is that xabi alonso like him um i i i'm not a hundred percent that in the premier league but it depends how you want to play you can play a system for anyone but but no i i wasn't the biggest cucurilla guy but he's been really good at chelsea for a long time and um but you know you get to that age 27 28 where you know the club have a certain model that they employ and they need to get money back. I remind everybody, they're under a settlement agreement with UEFA, even if they haven't qualified for Europe.
28:43They will face sanction and they will pay more fines if they don't get some money back. And he's obviously an asset you can move. So is Chalaba for that matter? I wouldn't necessarily move either one, but reality bites here, Jules. What are you going to do? More Real Madrid. Our old friend Sami Khedira is reportedly being lined up as an assistant by Jose Mourinho. Jose, what's he going to bring? I mean, this would be his first gig.
29:12Julien Laurens:Yeah, I mean, we know that he passed his badges. I saw him before the Champions League final in... Before the semifinal of the Champions League in Munich. I saw him in Budapest as well. We had a little chat. He said that he wanted now. He felt the right time to go into management. either as a first team coach but he said more likely as an assistant like this and this makes sense. He knows Mourinho really well because they worked together when he was a player at Real Madrid. He knows the club so well obviously he was very successful there speaks the language as well. I think to be around that dressing room to have a player like him a figure like him in that dressing room would be very useful too.
29:51Julien Laurens:So I think something like that was probably lacking a little bit for Nardbe Loa or for Xabi Alonso before. So for me it makes loads of sense and maybe Gabi That means we can go and see him in Madrid and he can feed us in a little bit about what he does within the club, you know, and within the dressing room. Yes, Sammy, go ahead. Text me. Let me know what time suits you. But I'll tell you what, though. I think this makes a ton of sense because obviously there's a long history about kind of club guys coming in with a new manager. Here you have somebody. Mourinho has changed a little bit over the years.
30:25He doesn't necessarily want assistants who are yes-men. He values people who come in with different perspectives. Obviously, you know, Kadir has been around the block. He's worked for so many different managers. I think he can bring value to Mourinho. And also the fact that, yes, he's a club leader. You know, he's a very important player for Real Madrid in the past. But also he's been outside the club for a while. And I think that's a really good match.
30:54Julien Laurens:Ruben Amorim is reportedly top of Milan's list, Gab. If he does join, it would save Manchester United some money. Do you like this? Well, it's saving money, yes, because of, obviously, when he left and some of the money he got with his severance when he went away. You know what, I would like this more if I knew who was actually talking to him and appointing him. The reports are that Jerry Cardinale rang him up personally and they talked. And then later he spoke to the agents, the representatives. Like I said, Milan right now, they don't have a CEO. They don't have a technical director. They don't have a director of football.
31:35Jerry going out and doing this. This is strong sort of Todd Bowley transfer market vibes at Chelsea, frankly. And I don't think that's a very good thing. Now, they are working. Obviously, the Ralph Rangnick ship seems to have sailed because Ralph Rangnick supposedly felt that Milan's project isn't clear. Well, Ralph, you're the one who has to bring clarity to the project. Jerry sure as hell isn't going to bring it. That's not his day job. Milan are working on two guys from Eintracht Frankfurt, Marcus Kroche, who would come in, I guess, as some sort of overseer, technical director, and Timo Harden.
32:14Milan or quick to brief all the star players that you know they unearthed it and they signed for Eintracht Frankfurt forgetting also some of the bad ones who didn't work out I would feel better if these people were in base and then you selected the coach to me it's a logical order of operations I feel even better if you actually had a CEO somebody at the helm who could devote himself full time to this that would be even better I know Zlatan's there but he's not really there because he's in L.A. working for Fox at the World Cup. I don't think he can do all these things remotely over the phone. But, hey, who knows?
32:49I saw Amarim on the pitch. Like, he can't be the guy he was at Manchester United. Maybe he'll go back to being the guy he was at Sporting. I think we deal better with tactical rigidity at Milan than elsewhere. It would probably be good news for Rafael Leal and Christian Pulisic. on paper, you put those two guys behind a centre forward and suddenly the 3-4-2-1 might make a little bit of sense, but I think we're some time from this kind of being fully settled and getting a full picture of Milan.
33:20Julien Laurens:And Uncle George, by the way, you know, putting Amorim at Milan and Mourinho at Real Madrid, it's already a pretty good summer for him. I know, Uncle George never goes away, bounces back out and don't forget, the guy he's putting in at Wolves as well. Is that it? Yeah, that's him. Yeah, yeah. Bayern, meanwhile, reportedly close to picking up Ismael Saibari, who is not an Uncle George client, from Pace Eindhoven and a deal worth$55 million. Jules, your thoughts? Yeah, I mean, what better timing to do that than after the great goal that he scored against Brazil. He had an outstanding season as a force number nine for PSV, for somebody who usually plays more in midfield and make those runs into the box more as a second striker or box-to-box if you want.
34:05Julien Laurens:That fourth number nine position with our friend Peter Bosch worked really, really well for him. I'm not really sure where then he fits into this Vincent Kompany system, unless it's a backup to Kane or can play with Kane in a kind of very fluid front two. I think that could work really well. I love him. I think he's an outstanding pick, outstanding player. It's a lot of money, especially after PSV, what bought him for hardly nothing three years ago or something. but hey, Bayern Munich clearly had scouted him before and even before he shone sorry against Brazil wanted to sign him so I think this could potentially be a really good match It feels like a depth signing I mean, you're right he doesn't score a lot of goals whether he's playing attacking midfield or obviously when he played up front he didn't score a lot of goals for a team that does score a lot of goals but yes, as long as Harry Kane is fit he can certainly come in and of course when you've got Alises and Luis Diaz and Jamal Musiala feeding you, you will get your goals.
35:07But I think he'll probably get more playing time there than he will in the number 10 position.
35:13Julien Laurens:Roberto Mancini has rescinded his contract with Al Saad, Gab. Does that make him a step closer to the Italian national team? So a lot of people are saying, oh, this can only mean one thing. You know, guys, the elections are in June 22nd, a week's time, and then we'll see. Antonio Conte is still very much in the mix. I think he was going to rescind his contract with Al Saad. Anyway, it is a way of maybe accelerating things a little bit. Maybe if afterwards there's a negotiation, there's a potential, you know, the fact that he can go around and say, hey, guys, look, I'm free. Better come quick. Somebody else might come in.
35:50I said this before, Mancini or Conte, either one, massive upgrade over the guy who was in charge before. Personally, I would lean Mancini, but I'd be very happy with both. And if we screw up another World Cup, then we'll just pack it in. Go play another sport. Dino Topmuller is set to take over at Launce. Jules, did our boy Joseph O 'Gourlian choose the right guy to take over from Stonewise?
36:17Julien Laurens:Yeah, we see how that pans out. Really, I think it's a really smart choice. He was on the short list from the beginning with other names like Olivier Pantalone, you know, the pants man, one of your favorite French coaches. and I think at Launce they were very very impressed with Top Moller who speaks French which I think helps really like the like the job that he did at Frankfurt for example like the mentality like the philosophy so there was a lot of things that they were really impressed with and I'm happy to see just something a bit different you know Pantalone did well at Lorient there was other French coaches that could have come to Launce and and maybe would have done a Good job, but barely we would have known them before.
36:57Julien Laurens:Topmola is a bit of a question mark, and I like that, and we will discover what it's made of very quickly. Western majority shareholders David Sullivan has stepped down and will be forced to sell his shares, Gab. This is a really ugly story. It's a horrendous story, and it's a story which, you know, like David Sullivan made his money in adult entertainment over the years and started off in the 1970s and 1980s. So some people might suggest that it's kind of inevitable that stories like this might arise. Seven women have accused him of pressuring him into sex. There's another story about how, you know, he had this thing with counting down the days until a model turned 16 so that she could be pictured topless in one of his newspapers.
37:48It's stuff that seems like from another era, frankly. what's really concerning to me is that the fa three years ago kind of secretly banned him from having unmonitored contact with women uh and people in the youth team at west ham now if you're in this situation because of these allegations why are you doing this secretly shouldn't you tell us rather than making these weird safeguarding rules is this somebody you want to represent you. We'll see if the other shareholder, Daniel Kretensky, wants to supposedly buy shares. Somebody else might come in. But it's just such a horrendous story. After years as an assistant, Yaya Toure is getting a shot at first team management, Jules.
38:32He's on his way to Slovan Bratislava.
38:34Julien Laurens:Yeah, I mean, so it might sound a little bit strange to you, I guess, Slovan Bratislava. I mean, who are very strong in their own country. One of the best teams in there where I think I hope for him he will have the time to put in place his philosophy after some years as an assistant. I think he learned a lot, but again, I think he felt ready to finally step up and go to first-team football. So we wish him good luck. We love Yaya Toure on this show, obviously. And I think this will ease him in the job and that routine. So I think it's a good choice. I'm so happy he's had an opportunity because other players of his stature, you know they go out and they seem to get one straight away and he's kind of really worked for it.
39:17FIFA and FIFA Pro have signed an agreement Gab tell us more. So basically FIFA Pro of course the umbrella organization that represents all the players unions in the different countries this is important to them what they've agreed so far is a ban on players being forced to train alone which we sometimes see and also a mandatory rest period what that rest period is is still to be determined in exchange. They're dropping their lawsuits against FIFA over kind of fixture congestion and so on. The reason this matters is that they are now kind of a recognized interlocutor to FIFA, which means we could have collective bargaining at some point.
39:56FIFA, you'll remember, they were kind of messing around with other unrecognized player unions and stuff like that. This is big for FIFA, bro. And I don't think, knowing some of the people involved, I don't think this means that they're going to come out and simply be doormats. But players need to be represented. Players need to have a voice in this. And I think this is a positive and it's a win. I think you get further with this than you do with lawsuits, frankly. Martín de Michele, he's only joined Mallorca in February, got relegated in May, signed a new deal, an extension for three years, or two years rather, a few days after that.
40:33and now Fabrizio Romano and others are telling us that he's being lined up to replace Oliver Werner at Leipzig. Jose, does this strike you as weird? Does the guy have commitment issues?
40:43Julien Laurens:I mean, this is football for you, Gab, isn't it? How many times have we seen some stuff like that? Maybe not to this extreme, happened in the past. But yeah, it shows you how quickly things can go, really. You're right. In terms of your own ethics and committing yourself to a club and then after that, because it's a bigger club, to just change like that and go for something else. I've got a few issues with that, I won't lie. I don't want to say that karma at some point might get to Demichelis like he got to Rob Edwards, for example, at Wolves. But to a certain extent, I think this kind of stuff could have been done very, very differently.
41:21Jules, we're not done because we're going to have more quick hits coming up after the break. Unlike Martín Emichelis, we do not have commitment issues. And there's some good stuff coming up, too. An Amazon Prime show with Manchester United and also Nike Lego stuff. How about that? 43:27Welcome back to the Gavin Jules Show, presented by Gusto. Manchester United have done a deal with Amazon for a fly-on-the-wall documentary chronicling Michael Carrick's first full season in charge. Jules, what could possibly go wrong?
43:43Julien Laurens:Exactly, Gavin. I mean, you don't want to tempt faith, do you? That's the thing. Things have gone really well so far for him when he took over. After Ruben Amorim, he qualified them for the Champions League. and sure, next season a lot of things will happen but you hope for them that it's not a disaster otherwise, I mean we will watch that fly on the wall if it's more negative than not but you would hope that for him to work in peace and everything that just has a little bit of pressure and I'm just not sure this was needed right now basically but hey, I hope I wish him the best and wish United the best for sure and hope that documentary is a success otherwise, I mean they would be pretty gutted.
44:21100 % Josac, I don't want to ruin the magic of documentary and reality TV, but the club will retain editorial control over everything. But still, the cameras inevitably are going to be disruptive. Michael Carrick doesn't really seem to be a camera showbiz type guy, not to me anyway. I'm not sure he needs this, but I guess they need some money here for the bottom line.
44:46Julien Laurens:Gab, you were fascinated by the story of thieves stealing England equipment from a truck last week. It's been mostly recovered now. But what fascinated you the most is the police report of it. It is. Now, look, obviously, the story comes out. All of a sudden, it sounds like, you know, England's boots were stolen. I saw the headline. Oh, my God. How is Harry Kane going to play? Does he need to break in new boots? Does somebody need to go down to to to to the castle or whatever the local sports shop is to go and buy stuff? And then you find out what was actually stolen. It's in the police report.
45:20What I find hilarious about this police report, you should check it out online, is that the police listed not just what was stolen, but the value of each item. And so you find out that, you know, four pairs of boots valued at 250 pound each. okay that tracks i'm sure they have fancy boots um three national team jerseys signed by the national team those are valued at five thousand dollars each i don't know who would pay five thousand dollars for an england shirt signed by all the england players like it's not that's cool to have but sounds like a lot of money that's the kind of stuff you put on an insurance uh report And then you had four navy shorts, no value.
46:05Of course, who wants to go out and wear Esri Kansa's stinky worn shorts? Two lion stuffed animals, no value? Really? Not even sentimental value? And finally, my personal favorite, one Lego set of Nike Air shoes valued at$99.99. I love that. I know this is part of Thomas Tuchel's psychology here, Jules. Certainly, that's the item you would most like to have, right?
46:39Julien Laurens:Yeah. I mean, when he says value as well, this is just the price in the shop. That's it. Absolutely love it. Anyway, thanks for tuning in to the Gab and Jules show presented by Gusto. Gusto is your small business partner for payroll, benefits, and so much more. Get started for free at gusto.com.
