0:35I'm Gab, he's Jules, Grey Skies over West London, but it's okay because we're here to brighten things up because it's the Champions League. We're getting down to the business end. Plenty going on. Real Madrid, a huge, huge victory. Barcelona win too, but they concede too. Manchester City up in the Arctic. Not good. Not good. Well, let's start with the game you were at. Yeah. Marseille against Liverpool at the velodrome. Mohamed Salah's return.
1:04Julien Laurens:Yeah. On the surface, Liverpool preying on Marseille mistakes. Marseille disappointing. Yeah. Yeah, far too comfortable for Liverpool, to be fair. I'm not sure exactly what Roberto Deserbe tried to do tactically in this game. I don't think the back five was a good idea at all. I'm not sure his midfield worked either. and certainly every time Graven Bersh was on the ball or McAllister or Wiers or Soboslai, it was just far too easy for them. There was not enough pressure, not enough intensity for Marseille, despite the atmosphere being incredible at the Velozrom, as we expected, because it was a big game.
1:40Julien Laurens:Had Marseille won on Wednesday night, they would have qualified already, which is not the case now. They're going to go to Bruges next week under massive pressure. You get past Mr. Champions League, Hans Van Aken. He's going to give the Derby nightmares. Yeah, absolutely. really really bad night for Marseille and really I think more importantly not really understood what they're trying to do and after the game De Zerbi said well it's a shame my players who could not read the game because had we if they had read the game better we would have been in a better position I was like hang on you saw the game too you could have said from the touchline hey let's go to a back four let's make sure we've got an extra money midfield things like that but he never cried anything even played with a back five until the end which was crazy it looked to me what he was trying to do, and maybe I'm completely, I'm watching on television on one screen, you're there in person, but it looked to me like he was trying to out football Liverpool.
2:36Because even with the back five, obviously this is wingbacks were supposed to push up. But look, that's admirable if you want to do that, but I don't think, I mean, Liverpool will punish you. They're organized. I don't know if he looked and said like, oh, look, Liverpool's recent run of form, not great, notwithstanding the Burnley game of the weekend. And he really paid it. Is that reading correct? Because you would know about everything. Yeah, no, no.
3:03Julien Laurens:I don't think they tried to outplay them because they didn't put any rhythm into the game either. They didn't keep the ball well. They didn't create much apart from Greenwood on his own, whether it was a shot or then the cross he had for a throwaway in the second half and the ball he gave Aubameyang. It was a gruey chance too, no? It was a gruey on the second phase of said piece, but that was just a shot that I think Alisson made a good save, but not more than that. But in the game itself, it was very difficult for them to do anything. And I'm just not sure really with all the options, and there are different options.
3:36Julien Laurens:You might not like Vermeer and you might not like Aubameyang too much or Riley, those kind of guys. But I think there was a lot of other things he could have done. And maybe more importantly, the fact that he recognized himself that he didn't read the game properly, that he didn't change anything. at halftime or even halfway through the first half when it clearly was obvious to see that they were going to struggle. All right, let's talk Liverpool. On the surface, you know, that sneaky free kick. Actually, I feel like everybody puts a player down behind it. I thought everybody did, yeah. I don't know.
4:11I think he clearly... I should describe it for people who are just listening on the podcast and haven't seen the highlights, although you really should. Dominic Salvaslai takes a free kick. they do not put the so-called draft excluder, the guy lying down behind the goal. While the wall jumps, Soboslai acts as if he's going to go and put it in the left corner. Instead, he hits it low along the ground and they jump over the wall. On purpose. Oh, yeah.
4:35Julien Laurens:I would need to look again at Marseille's last few games to see if they never do it, for example. So it's something that Liverpool's analysis team picked up and told Soboslai or whoever else. Maybe Soboslai picked it up in the moment. Yeah, because I think I think it's more likely that that's the case than not. But if Marseille hadn't done it for a while, maybe they said to Soboslai and the others, listen, if there's a free kick on the edge of the box, take it. By the way, stupid foul from Baleri, who went barging in Salah that was new. Not his first stupid foul either. So you could look at this and say, well, in terms of incidents, but Liverpool were really dominant beyond the incidents that led to the goals.
5:09I got to ask you quickly about Mohamed Salah. He's back straight into the lineup, plays 90 minutes against Nigeria on Sunday, straight back in, in what looked kind of like a four box two formation. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Make sense?
5:22Julien Laurens:Leaving his performance, make sense? Yeah, because I think he had Swimpong. Vietz and Iquitike are still the main guys there. And he felt at times on the periphery, Salah, in that position too. And had one chance, that's all he had. Which he takes with his wrong foot, which was... Yeah, with his dominant foot, the left. With his dominant foot. But come on, I've seen you score with your right from there. That's why make it so difficult for yourself. Not good enough. I do have to talk about the finish because he's put through. It's on the counter. It's like injury time. They're 3-0 up. Yeah. The ball comes through.
5:58It's extremely difficult to hit it with the outside. His dominant foot is obviously his left foot. It's extremely difficult to hit that ball and finish with your left foot. The only way to do it is if you somehow hit it with the outside of your foot. Yeah, yeah. Which he's done before.
6:13Julien Laurens:A player of his quality can still do it. done before but for anyone it's so much easier and because he scored plenty of goals with his right yeah yeah it's so much easier to go and just get it in with with your right he chooses that i may be over analyzing this why would you do that could it be because you wanted to not just score maybe you knew but but score a statement goal which is what it would have been because it would have been you hit it with your left foot the way i mean the arc of the ball and everything You'd have to hit it hard and curve around the keeper. Maybe. I think he rushes it.
6:47Julien Laurens:And because he rushes it, because he can't even take a touch, but he rushes it. And the only way to get to the ball as quick as he clearly wanted or tried was to go with the outside of his left foot. But it was the wrong, because he looks an embarrassing finish, to be fair. For a player like him, it's something that you would see at the park with average players. So not good. And I think also a goal would have been, considering how average his performance was in a game, he was never really in the game, had nothing at all. I think that would have not just saved this game in a way in performance, but I think that would have done him a lot of good.
7:21Julien Laurens:Because now we talk again, okay, what do you do for the game at the weekend? Do you play the same team? I don't think he fits there really in that system. And so we go again. If he had scored, maybe we'd have said, well, he scored. First game back, he scores, they won. It worked. That can work. Let's go again and let's try to make it work better. Now I'm thinking I would rather Curtis Jones or maybe even Gagpo. Considering Wiers was, again, outstanding, I thought that Iktiki was good and should have scored. I'm not sure you need Salah, really. All right. After last night, I'm not saying that never again you should play for Liverpool.
8:02Julien Laurens:After last night, the way they played, there were other very dominant players that Liverpool clearly relied on more than him. Okay, I'm inclined to give Salah a pass on this one Because the guy's been gone for a month in Morocco I thought it was interesting And I think there is something to be read into Slott's decision Because for this game you had Cody Gakbo available So if you want to play that box and play a front two Like Cody Gakbo Yeah, yeah, yeah Play Gakbo there, right? And he came on for a kid to get in the lag Yeah, in that position The fact that instead, let me go and choose the guy who played 90 minutes on Sunday, when obviously the Liverpool game I think was on Saturday, if I remember correctly, against Burnley, and who's just flown from another continent.
8:54Morocco's not that far, but still, right? Let me just chuck him in there. He hasn't trained with us in months or in a month almost, right? I thought that was a statement. Now, is it a statement? I think it's a statement. of, all right, there's 10 days left in the window. Everybody said, he's off, he's off to Saudi Arabia. And it's not just we in the media. I mean, as you know, I was skeptical. I will take credit for that one. But a lot of people, I think a lot of people in Liverpool were convinced that he was going to take whatever offer he had from Saudi Arabia. Although, funny enough, there was never like a name attached to the offer, just Saudi Arabia.
9:37And he could still go because the window's still open. Yeah. But I'm wondering if there hasn't been a shift in the meantime. And Slott's saying, all right, he's not going to, there is a strong chance he might actually stay. If he stays, I will need him because Isak is out. Yeah. And I think with Bradley out, and obviously in the center back situation, and Gay not coming, obviously, we need to bring somebody in. I hope we bring somebody in, but it's going to be a defender. It's not going to be a striker. Yeah, sure. Maybe we can bring two guys in. I don't know. But, you know, we certainly spend a lot in the summer.
10:14Yeah, yeah. And the way I can make this work is a front two. Because a front two allows me to play fullbacks who are more attacking. Because obviously I lost Bradley as well. So I don't have the option of the defensive fullback, right?
10:27Julien Laurens:This scheme can work. Yeah, it can. It can. The thing is, what if Salah is not good in it? That's the thing. Well, if Salah is not good in it, you have other strikers. Yeah, sure. But the problem is that Salah would not accept to be benched again regularly, like before the crisis. That's the thing. If he doesn't accept it, then he can move in the summer. But I think it's in his interest. You know, he can't just say, I don't accept, right? Because from the club's perspective, he said, okay, in the 4-2-3-1, we had issues with you because you don't defend in the same way that we need you to defend, especially if you have Frimpon behind you.
11:08in a 4-4-2 you could defend less and you can focus on finishing playing final third, we play a lot of teams that sit deep against us, low block you're still probably the most technically gifted or maybe the second most technically gifted if you think Virts is more technically gifted, I'm not sure I'd go there yet so we can still use you but this is a system for you and it allows me to play my midfielders and keep control of that midfield and knock everybody out, right? This has to be the way forward If it's Salah or somebody else.
11:38Julien Laurens:Yeah, yeah, I think they'll try. If it's not Salah, then you've got different options tactically. It was interesting on Tuesday in his press conference, he said you would be mad not to use somebody who's called 45 goals in the Champions League in the Champions League. So we kind of knew on Tuesday he was going to use him because he was going to start him. Otherwise, he would not have come up with that kind of statement. So he did. Again, I didn't think he was convincing from a Salah individual performance. So we see there's obviously the weekend. and then next week against Carabao at home, which is the last game of the league phase for Liverpool, it probably will start him.
12:12Julien Laurens:I wonder if you rotate him a little bit so he doesn't start at the weekend in the league, but he starts against Carabao in the Champions League next week. If you do that, maybe try either another system or another player like Gakpo or somebody else in his role from last night. It'd be really interesting to see, but it was inevitable that once Salah would be back, Like, we would talk about, it would be the salad debate again. If he had not started last night, we would have said, wait, why didn't he not start? So it's... Come on, why did he not start? You really have to be mean to go and say that.
12:43Why didn't he start? No, no, no. He just came back from the Cup of Nations. It's entirely understandable why he wouldn't have started.
12:54Julien Laurens:But it's clear more understandable that he started because he started him. So it was more obvious for him to start than not start. I don't know. Because I would not have started him. Right. And I didn't think he was going to start until Tuesday. So I was like, okay. And I didn't think Slott would start him. And I think you and Slott know about football. So that's why it surprised me. I think he's making a statement there. I do think, you can say you can try other systems. Salah or no Salah. Right now, with the players Liverpool have, I don't know that there is another system other than this one that allows you to play with these fullbacks.
13:28because I think you need those midfielders.
13:32Julien Laurens:You need to have... Yeah, it's just like Curtis Jones and put Sobos Lai on the right-hand side. They've done this while Salah was away. Sorry, tell me the system. Yeah, just Gravenbesch, McAllister, Jones, Viz, probably be a bit free like yesterday, but not as central as yesterday, probably a bit more onto that left-hand side. Sobos Lai and then Ekitiki up front, you don't even need Gagpo, but you could have Gagpo. But then you're packing the team even more with midfielders. What I'm saying is you can't go back to three midfielders, or let alone two midfielders, depending on how you count. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:06Or whatever. You cannot. The 4-2-3-1 or 4-2-4 is out. I think we just group at least until the summer, and then we see what happens. Because I think these midfielders are really performing. Soboslai, you're getting. You don't want to leave Soboslai out. No, no, no. Soboslai stays. There's no. Okay, but the thing is, once we say Gravenberg stays, Saba Slice stays, you're not going to play Gravenberg and Saba Slice. You're two. You've got McAllister, too. So I would play the midfielders, and so that's why I think it's going to be some variation of the system that we saw in this game. Back to Marseille.
14:45All right, they're third in Ligue 1. There's a huge game coming up against Lens and Stonewise. We could really relaunch them. I said it. I say we launched them in their title hunt. It would obviously, if they win, they would narrow the gap with Longs, but there's that team in between them that's pretty good, Paris Saint-Germain. But they're wheeling and dealing. Ethan Monieri on his way, and possibly Timber too. The other Timber, not the one who plays Arsenal, but his twin brother. His twin brother. Quinton.
15:14Julien Laurens:Yeah. Do we like the Monieri move? Yeah, yeah, I think he's good. I think he's good. I think they, in France, they're a little bit surprised because there's a penalty for Marseille if he doesn't play enough games. So it's a loan with a fee to pay. The fee will grow if he doesn't play the amount that Arsenal want of games. Andrea Berta, you got this one 100%. From Arsenal's perspective, and you know I've argued this before, this makes so much sense. You're not just getting him playing time because it's obvious his pathway is blocked for now, but you've made a commitment to it until 2030. you're sending him to a high quality team and you've kind of insulated yourself against him not getting playing time I'm assuming there's probably proviso in there if he gets injured or whatever right Hendrik is the same as Lyon with Real Madrid this is what happens when big club loan players to other big clubs but not as big as them it's not going to be a huge thing because the loan fee is presumably 2 million euros I think yeah relatively small so I mean it's not like it's going to go 2 million to 10 million if he doesn't yeah yeah but I think it's a good signing.
16:22Quinton Timber, he's played in midfield as well as at the back.
16:27Julien Laurens:Yeah, he was out of contract in six months, four and a half million euros. I think it's a great signing for Marseille. Slot was very, very full of praises for him. Obviously, they worked together. He fell out with Robin van Persie, so he was always going to leave Feyenoord anyway. And I think it's a very smart move. Both of them, I think, are very smart move for Marseille. In the past, Marseille had some, let's say, unscrupulous owners. I'm thinking of Bernard Tiffy. I'm going to make the stupidest dad joke here, but sorry. Can you imagine? They are twins, right? Can you imagine if somehow they concoct something so that actually they swap things around and he gets Urien?
17:08And screws over Arsenal?
17:11Julien Laurens:Yes, yes. Imagine that. Can you tell me? I think you can from memory. They are identical twins, obviously. I've never seen them both together up close in the flesh, so I am not in a position to judge. But that would be pretty cool.

18:27All right, enough Liverpool. How about some quick hits instead? Let's go, Hogan. Real Madrid demolished Monaco at the Bernabeu 6-1. Kylian Mbappe backs two goals. The much-bued Bellingham and the much-bued Vini both scored. The latter, by the way, phenomenal finish. Is everything well again among Madridismo jewels? Nothing to see here? Well, I think, like they say in Spanish,
18:49Julien Laurens:that somebody was always going to pay at some point with broken plates. That was Monaco, who were far too naive, far too poor defensively. Kerrer, Dier, terrible, terrible. Even with a 6-1 win, they considered chances. Courtois had to make a couple of really good saves. Yeah, that is a bias, not great. And that goal they considered was a really poor goal. But they scored. It will give them a bit of time. give Abel a bit of time, a bit of peace. The booing was not as loud as against Levante. And that's good. But they go to Villarreal at the weekend when it's a massive game in the league and they can't get this one wrong because this was very good in terms of win, but not perfect by finder.
19:31I think Villarreal move, if Villarreal beat them and they win their game in hand, Villarreal will be within a point of Real Madrid. And I might also add, I mean as I saw this game let's not forget let's remind everybody Monaco 7 defeats in 8 in Lyon now 8 in 9 between Champions League and Lyon I mean this is the team that they beat
19:54Julien Laurens:yeah yeah yeah that's true don't get carried away that's all I would say bearing an act of God or possibly Satan Gabi Arsenal will win the group stage of the Champions League after a 3-1 win away at Inter yeah which means that they'll win the supporters shield how about that no I just think Is there a special trophy for that? No, there's no trophy for it, but UEFA should make it. If UEFA were FIFA... Like with hands? Yeah, exactly. They would make a trophy for it. No, so Arsenal were very good. I think Inter made the mistake of trying to play against Arsenal. We talked before, the Marseille...

20:29Inter are in a situation, and I think a lot of teams in Europe face this, where domestically they play against smaller teams who go and pack the bus and they say, okay, let's knock the ball around. Let's go and play. Let's be open, try to impose ourselves. Inter without Hakan, without Shalhanoglu, cannot do that against Arsenal's press. Arsenal simply are a better team. I was very happy for Gabriel Jesus, the two goals after what he's been through. I would be, if I were an Arsenal fan, I'd be happier still if the best on earth, Kai Havertz, were up front, rather than him or Giochores. But Giochores also scored.
21:03A lovely goal, yeah. A lovely goal with a lot of help from Jan Sommer also. Oh, it's true. I think it's a lovely goal. If Jan Sommer doesn't go on his knees, he...
21:11Julien Laurens:I think it's a lovely finish, I would say, personally. You're not blaming the keeper at all on that one? No, I don't think so. I think it's a lovely, lovely finish. I give him credit for his confidence. Yeah, he's a good credit. But yeah, I thought Arsenal, they made it look extremely easy. Yeah. And I think... With a lot of rotation as well. With a lot of rotation. And I think the other difference too is when Arsenal beat teams in the Premier League or go and park the bus and it's a set piece or whatever, you know, you get a sense that, okay, we can beat these guys who face us a certain way. Now they went out and they outplayed, you know, what I think is still a top European side.
21:50Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And I think that also helps build confidence. Harry Kane scores twice in Bayern role to a 2-0 win over Union Saint-Gilois. Jaws, I'm pretty confident in saying that they're the best champions team, not named Arsenal.
22:03Julien Laurens:Yeah, they are. They are, for sure. Although it took a bit of time to get going in this game and it was nil-nil at halftime and all that kind of stuff. You know, Sanjurais defended well. Kane, I mean, this is a great quiz question for everybody that go to pub quizzes, but it's another game where he misses, he scores one penalty, misses the second. That happened in the Champions League before with Spurs against Frankfurt. That happens obviously at the World Cup against France. That happened in the Pokal with Bayern as well against Wehen. So four times in his career, that's a lot where he scores one penalty and then misses the second And I don't know psychologically what's going on in his head or if he starts thinking too much about those other games where he missed because this was another time.
22:46I think the most telling thing would be the fact that it was always the second, right? That he missed? Yeah, I think so. I think there'd be a story there if you missed the first and then scored the second. If you scored the first and missed the second, that's kind of more understandable. Yeah, probably. But it's more misses than we expect from Harry Kane. Yeah.
23:07Julien Laurens:Moises Caicedo scores the only goal that Chelsea overcome Paphos to keep the top eight aspiration alive. Gab, what did you make of it? Yeah, Cole Palmer, MIA, in this game. I'm sure everything's fine and it's a breather or there's a reason for it. But we got to see Enzo at the 10th, which is where you think he belongs. Absolutely. And Rhys James in midfield with Caicedo. First half was atrocious. he substitutes even ended up substituting the goalkeeper Jorgensen maybe he's been listening to you I think he was injured maybe but yeah you were maybe just injured not as good as Robert Sanchez we got to see a bad yes shield back heel which got me excited yes like typical game where I think Chelsea created chances without playing particularly well in the first half and if you were a senior you want them to finish the chances to me that's the main takeaway afterwards they could have scored more but It is slightly worrying and concerning because Pafos nearly held them to a draw.
24:09And we know that they go away to Napoli, Napoli with skin in the game, in their final match day. Also, when you make this many changes, is the team really growing that much? Are you developing that chemistry? That's always the needle that Rossini has to thread. Don't look now, but it's back-to-back defeats for Manchester City. They fall 3-1 to Bodo glimped in the Arctic Circle. Rodri gets sent off and Pep looks depressed.
24:36Julien Laurens:Yeah, it was embarrassing, really, the result, the performance. They could have lost 5-1 easily. They were so poor in everything they did defensively with the ball. Nothing for Haaland again. That's one goal in 8-9 in all competition and that was a penalty. Not that you're counting or anything. Yeah, terrible. I don't understand. I mean, yes, there was a bit of a shaky goal there, but defensively, the high line was a terrible idea. I guess the plastic pitch didn't help. Maybe how cold it was and rainy or anything you want, but still you should have done better than that. Maybe even a plastic pitch.
25:11I know the ball runs differently, but the ball's going to run differently because it's minus eight outside anyway. And also the one thing that everybody's been told, plastic pitch, don't let the ball bounce. That's like the most basic thing because it bounces differently, right? I mean, I'm not going to go and murder Maxaline because you know what? he's been there two weeks. It shouldn't mask the issues that are happening further
25:37Julien Laurens:up the pitch for this club. Yeah, there's so many issues. And Gab, City captain Bernardo Silva and his vice captains, Ruben Diaz, Erling Haaland and Rodri are so embarrassed that they have decided to get the players to personally refund the cost of the ticket to the body limit game for the City fans who traveled their way to Norway. I get the spirit behind this.
26:01but somebody did the math on this.
26:03Julien Laurens:Yeah. There were 347 City fans who traveled. They spent around 30 pounds a ticket, maybe a little bit less, so$35. The refund is 9 ,357. Divide that by 25 senior players at Manchester City. From a PR, PR movies is not a good look. No. Right? Not when you have - I don't know, pay for the flights as well and the hotels. I don't know. just make it if you're gonna do it yes do it properly pay for everything it's not gonna cost you very much for players yeah you know obviously waited so erling holland pays more than maxaline sure uh but i don't i just don't like this in general because you're apologizing you you're saying you should apologize if you try your best i've just been taught this you should never apologize for making a mistake yeah you know this is simple right by apologizing you're intrinsically saying, oh, well, we didn't try.
27:00No, and I know they tried, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I don't think this is a good look, and I understand the spirit. I'm not faulting that. There's better ways to do it. Yeah. Jules, I have to go there. I know. Kvichak Verasilia scores a world league, but it's not enough as Paris Saint-Germain fall at Sporting 2-1. Nobody's counting, but you brought up Verlique Holleber here.
27:22Julien Laurens:We'd say one win in four for Paris Saint-Germain. I need to be right. Any reason to be concerned? I mean, it was another smash and grab, a bit like the Paris FC defeat, but they happen. You know exactly. You're going to have, I think they had the highest possession ever in Champions League for the club, 74 % or something, which is a lot away from home. But if you don't use that ball enough in creating chances, taking your chances, defending better, your race defense, in transition, anything, your on-set pieces, Chevalier wasn't great. Barcola and Dwayne especially wasn't great either. So the problem, Roussain Riquet after the game saying, we had a wonderful performance, but football is a SHIT sport, which I understand the frustration, but they should have never lost.
28:09I think you're being too kind here. Roussain Riquet. No, no, you're being sort of too kind to everybody else in pointing out Paris Saint-Germain's flaws. I don't know what you can do. I don't think it's an SHIT sport, but I do think it's a low scoring sport where there's variance. and if your goalkeeper makes a mistake like that, which can happen to anyone. Even Gigi Donnarumma made mistakes once in a while, I'm told. And you go out and you have so much of the ball and you're playing a team like that, sometimes the ball doesn't go in. It's as simple as that. I don't need anything to apologize for.
28:40The other games, you know, you're in a better place than I am, but, I mean, they beat... Yeah, Paris FC was exactly the same. You know, stuff happens.
28:48Julien Laurens:Yeah, yeah, that's true. Napoli take the lead and go a goal away in Copenhagen only to consider silly penalty with Alessandro Bongiorno and settle for a 1-1 draw. Gab, how angry must Antonio Conte be? I think he's going to be absolutely furious. That's embarrassing as well, by the way, that 1-1 draw. It's embarrassing. He has, again, everybody's injured. Okay, I get that, right? It's still a decent team. It's still a decent, yeah. It is still. It's enough to beat Copenhagen who were down to 10 men for an hour. It is enough, yeah. I mean, it is Elmas and Vergara behind Rasmus Hoiland. You know, you go win the Champions League with Elmas, Vergara, and Rasmus Hoiland.
29:27Julien Laurens:But you beat Copenhagen with 10 men. But you're winning. You cannot concede a penalty like that ever. Ever. Yeah. And you know what? Buongiorno. He got so much hype. He moved from Torino. Oh, look. The next. I don't see this guy, other than being a little bit foggish and strong and flexing, I don't think he's that good. I really don't. I really don't think he's on this level. Yeah. And, of course, they host Chelsea, and it's do or die for them. If they don't beat Chelsea, they're going home. By the way, it's going to have big impact, too. De Laurentiis, always helpful and calm in these situations, coming out and saying, oh, well, now we won't be able to spend any money this January, and it's going to cost us the title, blah, blah, blah.
30:06Come on, bro. Like, be helpful. Barcelona have to come from behind, but eventually beat Slavia Prague for two jewels. Are you going to celebrate Fermi Lopez's two goals? Or question them giving up silly goals on set pieces again?
30:19Julien Laurens:Again, yeah. And we knew they were coming. And Slavia, a very physical team, and made the most of it, for sure. I mean, there was a lot of naivety in the way they defended on those set pieces. But with the ball, even with that Lamine, who was suspended for too many yellows, they're still so good with the ball. They lost Pedri. That's probably the worst news. It's not so much they consider again on set pieces. It's that Pedri looked like he pulled his armstring or suddenly a muscle in the back of his thigh, which is bad, bad, bad news, especially if he was to be out for a certain amount of games.
30:54Julien Laurens:I love the Daniel Mo goal though. All the goals. I love Femin but Daniel Mo was... That's what you call a clean strike. Goes from Maybach, Efren Thuram and Weston McKennie. If you've entered a 2-0 win over Benfica and Jose Mourinho for whom Pavlidis took a horrendous penalty and missed as you guess. Gab, Jose Mourinho's Champions League could end next Wednesday against Real Madrid. It could. I am thoroughly, nothing against Madrid. You'll probably win the Champions League again this year because it's one of those years. But I want Benfica to stay alive. They need to beat them. They need to beat Real Madrid.
31:27They need all these other results to go their way. Just because I want to keep Mourinho in the competition as long as possible. In this one, I thought Juventus played well. To Ram, I did not know he necessarily had that in his locker to power his way through. Weston McKinney, I think it's three goals now in the Champions League. And Juve are growing. UVA are growing. As for Pablidis, I mean a little harsh. He slipped. Really stupid slipping, which doesn't help. That's true. Jules, does this change your mind about whether Thomas Frank should stick around?
33:05Julien Laurens:Not really. That gives him some time. for sure buys him some time there was energy there was intensity which there hasn't been enough since the start of the season really so I like that they lost Bergwald too Dortmund did the Dortmund even apart from the red cards because they were poor from the start and considered some really poor goals the first one especially early but yeah I'm not sure you can take a lot away from this Guirassi touched the ball I think as many times as I did during that game but I will say this this should not if you're taught him this should not minimally impact whether you keep or move thomas frank uh he is everybody injured i looked at the bench it's colomwani dane scarlett who i've heard of because he's often on the bench and never plays and a whole bunch of guys who are filler from the youth team owen kinski yeah as if he's going to come on in midfield you can't judge a coach based on this whether he wins or loses you cannot judge him on that so you judge him on the work done until now.
34:07And if you've decided, maybe that's why Hatinga's there, to do the Judas and make the move.
34:13Julien Laurens:Yeah, yeah. You cannot go by results and performances because he doesn't have his players. Barul Mustafa Zadeh makes history by becoming the first player from Azerbaijan to score in the Champions League and more importantly, giving Kaabag a dramatic 3-2 win over Frankfurt. This is amazing. Four minutes in injury time. They needed the win. They get to go to Anfield in the final game to be safe. They may be safe anyway and qualify. It's tremendous. Karabag, of course, from Azerbaijan or Azerbaijan as some people or Aberbaiban, I think as some people call it. The alternative pronunciation. This was absolutely dramatic.
34:50Andre Frankfurt, of course, they're not good, but you still have to go out and beat them. They've had a tremendous campaign. Big shout out to them and Duran. PSV get bashed at Newcastle. 3-0.
34:59Julien Laurens:Harvey Barnes in fuego, Jules. Yeah, and you and Wisa as well. First time in the Champions League ever for him. Let's not forget that not that long ago he was playing for Lorient and now a golden assist for him great performance okay PSV had eight starters missing it was not even the B team probably the C team they were never going to be able to match the intensity and and the rhythm of Newcastle at St. James' Park so well done to them they lost Bruno Guimaraes and we don't know yet exactly how serious the ankle injury is but let's hope it's not much because next week Newcastle go to Paris obviously to play against PSG so that it's going to be a huge huge game Atalanta was second in the table for a while on Wednesday night but eventually threw it away against Athletic Club the Bilbao who beat them 3-2.
35:41Julien Laurens:Gab, I guess is the price you pay for being Atalanta? Yeah. And for being for being attacking and two Cavalier at the back. Mistakes from somebody like Darun who's supposed to be more experienced. I think it was pretty much clearly identifiable mistakes on two of the three goals that they conceded. The second one a ridiculous cross where the guy just puts those guys right there and whatever. It's a blow. They still have a shot at finishing top eight and you wouldn't go against them. 70 % possession in this game. They're just different. They're just different. Jim Radcliffe wants 200 million euros for Nice, as we told you.
36:23But now, Jules, he's reportedly cutting his price.
36:27Julien Laurens:Massively. It went from 200 to 100 and now I think it happily takes 60, 70 million, maybe he wants out. Really, his brother Bob also wants out. Bob has been running the operations, not just lately, but for the last few years. And they don't want that. They don't want to be there anymore. I just don't know who comes in. Is he a club that is appealing right now? I'm not too sure. Okay, I'm throwing this out there, right? I'm not advocating this at all, right? But, I mean, we know Liverpool have said quite explicitly. They're looking for a feeder club. We know Chelsea took on Strasbourg. For me, it would seem Nice are too big to be a feeder club.
37:20And they have a fan base that's bigger than Strasbourg. Which could be a problem as well. And also a fan base that is much more militant than Strasbourg. We've seen it before. So they're in that bubble where, you know, a great stadium, I think there's the opportunity to do a lot of good. I don't think this works as anybody's second team. So then you need to find somebody who's willing to come in from the outside, do the project from start, grow the team, compete with Marseille up the coast. It's a tough one. By the way, Ratcliffe has apparently put something like 200 million into the club.
37:58Julien Laurens:And new training grounds. investment at the beginning in players. If he sells at 60, I think he paid around 100 million for the club. Yeah, he did. If he sells at 60, that means he will have lost. He will lose money anyway. He will have lost a quarter of a billion. Yeah, yeah. Might this suggest to you that maybe running football clubs isn't his forte? Definitely. So it's probably why the Glazers are still in charge. Probably. CAF have opened an investigation into the African combination final after Senegal walked off the pitch, you remember, and there was all those disturbances with the crowd, the ball boys, the towers, etc., etc.
38:35Julien Laurens:We don't know what's going to happen, but there's a precedent that has been cited from none other than Champions League quite a long time ago. Yeah, it was the European Cup, as it was at the time. It was the year before it was rebranded, March 20th, 1991. And I'd completely forgotten this, but there's a lot of analogies. So it was Milan against Marseille. It was a two-legged quarterfinal. Milan at the time, the dominant team in Europe. It was Fabio Capello's Milan. Whatever they were sure, they were going to win the Champions League. They draw the first leg 1-1. This is Van Basten, Maldini, but these are those guys, right?
39:16They draw the first leg 1-1 in Milan. In the second leg, Chris Waddle scores a minute 75, three minutes later, to put Marseille ahead. Three minutes later, the lights go out. Not all the lights, by the way.
39:27Julien Laurens:I remember this game very vividly. Just one of the, they had four big corner lights and one of them left. So you could still see. It's not like if it was pitch dark. Right. So Adriano Galliani, then Milan's chief executive, pulls the players off the pitch. Everybody stands around. After 15 minutes, the lights come back on. Milan refused to come back out. They get banned for a whole year, which I think cost them a great, I mean, that Milan team was so dominant. I think they would have definitely won the Champions League the following year, but you wouldn't have bet against them. Yeah, they won two already.
40:00And they would win another one in 93-94. So we're talking about being banned from the competition. This is what CAF are struggling with. I mean, I know that the Senegal players came back. Yeah, so it's a bit different. But they still walked off the pitch. And it's different coming back when it's 1-1,
40:22Julien Laurens:when you still have a chance of winning. But can you have the next AFCON without the holders? because you can ban them like that, not for a year because it would not work for a country because they would go into the next AFCON qualifiers next, but you ban them for the next AFCON. I think this is what's terrifying FIFA and UEFA, that there is a precedent that's been set here even though it's another federation. I would not be surprised, there's my bold prediction here, if both UEFA and FIFA, and we touched upon this last time, but I've spoken to some people since then, if they put into the laws, not the laws of the game because they can't change those, but the competition regulations of the Champions League, the Euros, the World Cup.
41:02Yeah, yeah. If you abandon the pitch, your whole team abandons the pitch, you forfeit the game immediately. No ambiguity about this. I think that's what terrifies them because this is such a strong precedent. We know Morocco's taking legal action against CAF. We'll see how that turns out. You don't want this settled in court. No. it's just a bad situation. iFab are meeting to review potential tweaks to the laws of the game jewels. Nothing's confirmed, but it looks like Arsene Wenger's daylight rule will be trialed in the Canadian Premier League, possibly using torsos rather than any body part.
41:40We should point out there's no VAR in the Canadian Premier League. No, I'm not sure
41:44Julien Laurens:they're going to work this out. Let's just make this absolutely impossible for the linesmen. Yeah, great trial, by the way. I think it's a terrible idea anyway it's okay to trial it you can trial it I think it's a terrible idea I know sometimes there's a millimeter there you feel harshly done if it's your team that scored a goal and is this allowed or that conceded etc etc I just don't think this helps I think it will also be very difficult to judge even the torso I'm not I'm always in favour to give an advantage to the attackers no problem but I don't think this is the answer. I have so much time and respect for Arsene Wenger he's been tremendously kind to me in my career as a journalist.
42:32Suggestions like this you have people coming out and saying well Wenger's at FIFA he's frustrated because his other ideas like the two-year world cup or whatever or redrawing the calendar they didn't gain any traction. He wants something to be his legacy. And I hope that's not the case because you know what? Wenger doesn't need a legacy beyond what he's already given to the game and what he's already achieved. It's not by implementing a rule like this, which frankly nobody wants. Just listen to the referees first and foremost on this one.
43:02Julien Laurens:I agree. Deloitte published their Money League rankings. Gab, what stands out for you? The headline figure, because people like being mean to Manchester United, is that they slipped to eighth, which I think is the first time ever they've not been in the top fifth. these rankings are by revenue. By the way, you might have seen rankings of valuations, those rankings are estimates and they're all a little bit kind of gazy in the sense that finger in the wind, something's worth what you pay for them. This is based on revenues. This is much more solid. They recalculate it because different countries calculate things in a different way.
43:36Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, Paris Saint-Germain are the top four. There are no Premier League sides in there, but guess what? The next six are all Premier League sides. Manchester United are down to eighth, I think simply because they didn't have a good season in Europe. I mean, that's the obvious one. Liverpool, the highest revenue in that group, which surprised me a little bit, just ahead of City and then Arsenal. Interestingly, the wages, no prices for guessing who's number one. And I would have thought this number's come down. It's come down tremendously. Yeah. I wonder if it's going to come down, if they're able to make it come down further.
44:17Maybe yes, because Donnarumma's gone, but it's probably signs your man, 457 million euros. Number two, Barcelona, 442 million, which means you still have a problem, Barca. Too high, by far. Real Madrid, 429. Liverpool, 421. Very close there. City, 397. The other one that surprised me, well, Arsenal, 338. We assume that's going to go up because Saka's getting paid and they bought all those guys. Chelsea's still 353. That's still really high. Now, some guys, maybe they haven't gotten off their books yet. You can't blame all of this on Raheem Sterling, boys. That's true. So there's some interesting nuggets, I think, in there.

Was the Intercontinental Cup before that? Anyway, their version of it is scheduled to be played in London next week, Jules. Yeah.
46:05Give us a preview.
46:06Julien Laurens:Yes, we had the semi-final at Brentford in the G-Tech Stadium. Then the final at the Emirates. The teams involved, if you're wondering, and you can still buy tickets, by the way, Arsenal, who obviously won the Women's Champions League here in Europe, Corinthians, Gotham FC, ASFAR, the armed forces of Morocco, who qualify by beating a Chinese team. And a Chinese team, but previously beating the Adelaide United. Winners of the OFC Champions League. Yes, exactly. So I don't know if people are interested in this outside of being an Arsenal fan. Would you go and watch, for example, I don't know, Corinthians against Gotham FC?
46:43Julien Laurens:I'm not sure. Let's see if it's a success or not. You know what? You know who's interested in it? Me. I'm super interested in this for one simple reason. Right now, you talk to people in the US, the NWSL and the WSL in Europe, the Women's Super League. those are I think pretty much most people say those are certainly the two highest and the two best leagues in the world we constantly have people in the NWSL telling us how good they are, how much better they are, on the surface I watch Barcelona play, in a lesser degree Arsenal of course, we are the champions who beat Barcelona and when I watch NWSL games I say, guys these girls are a lot better over here these women, but I don't know and I think it's absurd that it's taken so long to settle this.
47:30I thought there should have been a Club World Cup for the women's game well before one for the men's game where you've got so many more difficult things to coordinate. So I hope this is going to be a success. And there will be a women's proper Club World Cup in due course as well. I think they could have probably done it earlier. Maybe. I don't know what they're squabbling about. But yeah, I think Corinthians play Gotham. I think that's probably more balanced than Arsenal against the, I say this with the greatest expect, with a team from the armed forces of Morocco. So most people expect an Arsenal-Gotham final.
48:06Julien Laurens:Yeah. And Deloitte also published money league rankings before women's football game. Yeah, it's a completely different landscape, Jules. The top three are Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona by revenue. The big difference between them is that Arsenal, by far, by far, the biggest matchday income. In other words, paying customers who actually pay tickets. This is because the TV deals aren't huge. Chelsea, I think something like 80 % of the revenue comes from their commercial deals, which obviously what often happens is kind of the men's side of the club leverages it. They leverage their power to get a deal for the women's club.
48:49But just to give you a sense, most of these three top sides, I think Arsenal are$24 million, something like that. So you're talking 130th? No, more than that. You compare the number one here to the number one for the man,
49:03Julien Laurens:Real Madrid, and it's 140th, right? So I'm not saying this to a humiliating anybody. I'm just telling you this is the gap that needs to be made up. This is what happens when you have a 120-year head start. Back to the Champions League. Galatasaray and Atlético Madrid battle to a 1-1 draw. Jules, both these sides look headed to the playoffs. Yeah, that's the result that really was no good for either team. okay it's better than losing but they both could have done with a win it was i didn't think it was that great in terms of level overall so now they're both heading into um the last game of the league phase got a sorry where city for example and atlético madrid will be at home i can't remember against two with a bit of pressure in the sense that he's going to try to finish as high as possible yeah i think i let you have a shot at finishing top eight yeah that's that i think is going that away.
49:54Yeah. It's a tricky one at this stage. I thought Galatasaray were, I wanted them to attack. Yeah. I mean, they went to go down early. They got equalized in the first half. I thought they showed Atletico Madrid too much respect. Julio Navarez, bad again on the road. Hey, what else is new? No surprise.
50:13Julien Laurens:Bruce, Tom Carr, Armati away. Mr. Champions League, Hans Van Aken scores again. Hans sets up a goal. Two goals he set up. Yeah, two goals. and they're all going to come down to the final game against Marseille. That's going to be huge because there's so much at stake for both these teams. I can't imagine a Champions League without Hans Van Aken. In fact, if Bruges get knocked out, I will stop watching the company. No, I'm just kidding. I won't. I won't. But yes, I'm so happy for him. Villarreal continued their specialty of being terrible in the Champions League and good in La Liga. Jules, there was a lot of rotation.
50:45And they lost 2-1 at home to Ajax, who were also just playing for pride. I don't think Viadac cared at all.
50:50Julien Laurens:No, you're right. Scored a great goal and then like, all right, guys. Yeah, I mean, there was nobody in the stands anyway. To start with, it was half empty, which can't be great to motivate your players. I mean, Ajax still with a miracle. Robert could maybe just dream of making it just about. Really? Because it's two wins in a row. Yeah, it's two wins in a row for them. But that was, I mean, we saw Oskar Gluck, who we love together, and that was great. and Fred Grimm I mean what a name for the interim Ajax manager not so grim anymore really after you know five defeats in a row a nice two wins in a row for Ajax in the Champions League a huge win for Olympiacos on the other hand who beat Bialovics in 2-0 in Athens both teams aren't in the playoff yet Gab and that's not the only thing they have in common no the other thing they have in common is I would have said they played they're playing two eliminated teams but now you've told me Ajax are not eliminated well I think there's still a tiny tiny chance they need results you feel much better for Leverkusen who are at home to Villarreal Olympiacos have to travel to Ajax this was a smash and grab I think is a term it's not that Leverkusen necessarily deserved to win although they I think they did more during the game yeah definitely I think Leverkusen said alright let's just get a point here and we'll be fine and the best way for us to do this is to attack and in so doing Olympiacos on the counter buried them Meditaremi what a goal to make it to Niel yeah great finish Leon Bailey back at Aston Villa from his loan at Roma Jules does he move the needle for Unai Emery or is he just kind of like a body can he do a Daniel Mann an impersonation yeah let's see they called him back from his loan I guess the Magui injury the fact that Guisson is still struggling to find his form and have an impact on this team and Jalen Sancho is you know and Sancho so either they thought listen let's bring him back we need numbers We play a lot.
52:46Julien Laurens:We've got the FA Cup. We've got the league where they've got something to play for, obviously, plus the Europa League, which is massive for them. So I think it makes sense. I'm not sure how good is he and how many games he's going to play, but it's better to have him on the bench than not. Yeah, he didn't pull up trees at Roma. I don't think Roma. Sorry to see him go. 13 months after collapsing during Fiorentina's game against Inter, Eduardo Boves is back, Garvin. That's great news. It's great news. I'm slightly conflicted about it. I mean, again, you're the medically adjacent one here. He had a subcutaneous implantable defibrillator implant on his heart.
53:22He collapsed due to a heart condition. It's the same heart condition that Christian Erikson had or that Daily Blind had. In Italy, you are not allowed to play professional sports if you have one because you're considered at risk. And you can call it nanny state if you like, but we feel that if you have that, you are putting yourself at risk. You have a medical service. You do not play professional sports. Boves, you know, made that decision. He can't play in Italy. So he goes to Watford in the championship to have a go. It's a personal decision. Personally, I don't know. I don't know. I mean, look, you're the doctor here.
53:56I know, but if he's been given the green light. He's not been given the green light. He's specifically not been given the green light in Italy. No. So he has to move to another country, which he'll give you one.
54:05Julien Laurens:Which Ericsson is playing with one. Yeah. LeBlanc has been playing with one, too. so it shows you that yes you can it's risky sure of course it is but if you feel like it and if you've been told that you can't outside of Italy play and you want to go for it go for it I'm just glad if he really wants to play I'm glad to see him back on the pitch yeah I think from a government perspective I can understand why maybe they're overly cautious yeah yeah me too because if something happens you become a cost yeah yeah yeah sure but from a personal perspective if here they don't have that rule, then go for it.
54:40Jules, remember our buddy Milutin Ozmaik? Yes. He was the Preston striker who got a nine-game ban in November for racially abusing an opponent and an eight-game ban the year before for biting an opponent. Yeah, that's right. This time, when it's only been back three or four games, he headbutts an opponent against Hull City, facing another long ban.
54:59Julien Laurens:What is he doing in our league, in our championship? What is he doing at Preston? How come they've not sacked him before for all those things that he did? okay, he served this band twice in the two bands that he got. If I had been the president owner or president, anything, or even the fans, I would have made sure that he never wore my shirt again. This is a disgrace, man. Absolute disgrace. I don't think there's any other, any other words. It becomes like a meme at this point. Yeah, it's ridiculous. Edin Dzeko will be celebrating his 40th birthday at Schalke. Gav is leaving Fiorentina to join the fallen giants.
55:32That's right. Schalke top of the league in Bundesliga too, Which, by the way, given what Schalke have been through and Schalke fans, you don't need to be a fan of the Bundesliga. You have to respect Schalke. You know, those clubs, people talk about long-suffering clubs, and there's several long-suffering giants in German football from Hamburg, of course, back in the top flight, but also Hertha Berlin. I think Schalke probably trumps them all, frankly, given what's happened. It really is legitimately a people's club. massive stadium massive attendances massively poorly run for the last 5 or 10 years now they're on their way back and I think it's a heartwarming story I want to see Jekyll keep going police in Madeira are on the hunt for an Instagram user with a handle zeno.tcc Felipe after he posted a video presumably of himself I'm assuming it's him in the video dousing Cristiano Ronaldo's statue in funcha with lighter fluid setting it on fire he wrote these weird messages as well.
56:32There was music playing. I don't get it. You're more of an expert on this sort of stuff than I am. Am I? I don't know. When it comes to statues.
56:38Julien Laurens:Why would you do this? Setting statues on fire. We've all done it, right? I don't know why you would do that. I mean, at least we can see his face, so hopefully they catch him because it needs to be some sort of punishment for him. What if he says it's art? What if he says his is a form of art? It didn't seem like he took it as art, but wow, like a waste of time and don't do things like that. Don't damage people's statue or sculptures. It is an ugly sculpture. It is. But that doesn't mean it deserves to be damaged. Exactly. Marshall United are reportedly in negotiations with Lionsgate Films to produce a dramatization of the club's history along the lines of The Crown, which you probably saw on Netflix, Gab.
57:19I did. I thought, like, this is going to suck. I totally do not want to watch this. Not my thing. Especially because the early episodes are a long time ago and they all talk funny, whatever. And then I thought it was actually relatively entertaining. Entertaining, I should say. My message to Manchester United, do not do this. This is stupid. This is stupid. And the reason it's stupid is that films around football in particular, they all look dumb because you can't recreate the scenes.
57:48Julien Laurens:I mean, unless you're talking about football, maybe they won't show too much of the football itself. Maybe all around the club and everything. You can try to do that, but it's going to be corny. The other problem with this is the whole nature about football is that it's tribal, right? So yes, if you make this, every Manchester United fan is going to watch it. But why would a Liverpool fan have an interest? It would have to be really, really good, right? Yeah, sure. I look at it. I'm not saying the crown isn't divisive, but there's spiciness, there's history, whatever. I don't know. I don't think this is a great idea.
58:22I think the potential for, even if you're involved in the editorial process, the potential for doing something embarrassing and screwing this up, is pretty big. The financial rewards are pretty small. I don't think Manchester United need more advertising. Everybody knows who you are. I would genuinely, I mean, this is different from those, like, you know, fly on the wall documentaries or whatever, like completely different. I would seriously warn against doing this. But hey, what do I know? Jules, this brings us to an end. Yeah. But we got to come back on Monday. Arsenal against Manchester United.
58:58Speaking of United. Yeah, exactly. How about that? Michael Carrick at the Emirates. Yes. So until then, love the game. Love your neighbor. Love yourself.
59:11Monster Energy. Everybody knows White Monster, Zero Ultra. That's the OG. It kicked off this whole Zero Sugar Energy drink thing. But Ultra is a whole line up now. You've got Strawberry Dreams, Blue Hawaiian, Sunrise, and Vice Guava. And they all bring the monster energy punch. So if you've been living in the white can, branch out. Ultra's got a flavor for every vibe. And every single one is zero sugar. Tap the banner to learn more.
