In short

Champions League quarterfinal first legs and weekend football “quick hits,” plus managerial/transfer and league news. Main focus is Real Madrid vs Bayern (1st leg), Liverpool vs PSG (1st leg), and other knockout matches (Barcelona-Atletico, Arsenal-Sporting, plus Arsenal percentages).

Guests

Gabby Jules (hosts; football analyst/commentator), Jules (co-host).

Guest backgrounds

Both are long-time football podcasters/commentators based in London (Gabby Jules references “Blue Skies over West London”); they discuss tactics, player fitness, and club management like a fan/analyst duo.

Key claims

Real Madrid’s 2-1 win shows they can’t be “nullified” because they score via individual brilliance (Mbappe/Vinicius transitions, Valverde/Bellingham movement); Bayern’s intensity and substitutions matter for the 2nd leg. Liverpool’s 2-0 loss to PSG was tactically disastrous (back five, Salah omitted, 0 shots on target; “embarrassment”).

Notable examples

Neuer’s big saves at the Bernabeu; Bellingham’s impact as a sub; Olyse’s assist record chase; PSG’s missed chances; Atletico’s Cubarsi red-card debate; Arsenal’s David Raya praise; Conte linked to Italy job; Slot/Alisson/Juve and Leicester financial-rule fallout.

So glad the Saja Boys could take breakfast and give our meal the rest of the day. It is an honor to share. No, it's our honor. It is our larger honor. No, really. Stop. You can really feel the respect in this battle. Pick a meal to pick a side. Ba-da-ba-ba-ba. And participate in McDonald's while supplies last.

0:35I'm Gabby Jules, Blue Skies over West London. Jules, it's a Champions League quarter for the first leg. How about that? Three away wins in four. Remind me, you want a team to win at home? Yeah. For the champions. There's obviously plenty to get to stick into, but we're going to start Real Madrid against Bayern, in terms of European royalty history and everything. There's no tie that tops this. Alvaro Arbeloa came into this under pressure. He lost 2-1, but I kind of feel that because of the way the game unfolded with Real Madrid coming back to get a goal back in the second half, with Neuer forced into some really big saves, it could have been a lot worse for him.

1:28Not just results-wise, but just narrative-wise.

1:30Julien Laurens:Yeah, yeah, definitely. I thought there's a lot of things that he did in this game tactically that worked, to be fair. Even with Mbappe backing the team in that way. Him and Vinicius up front, the positioning of Valverde, that midfield three in behind. Bellingham coming on, I thought, really had a positive impact on the game for Real Madrid. And yeah, the fact that Courtois wasn't there was a massive blow, Lunin is no Neuer, he's no Courtois, with Courtois it would have been better. But against them they had probably the best team in Europe right now with an incredible firepower, Kuch should have scored more goals as well but Real Madrid also should have scored more.

2:07Yeah and let's be clear on this, I think what you noticed so much is, at least what I thought was, the contract, we've said this before and all of other Real Madrid's ills since then has meant that we don't bring it up as much. But this really is a team that will score goals through individual brilliance and individuals, whether it's Vini in transition, whether it's Mbappe in transition. That threat is always there. It never actually goes away unless they're having a bad game. You can't, I think, plan on nullifying them. You just have to make sure that at the other end you score enough goals, manage the ball or whatever.

2:50And that's why we were talking about fair. Like I thought, gosh, you're buying 2-0 up at halftime, you know, effectively because Kane's goal is over the second half. Make the pitch big, force them to chase you, force them, you know, manage that two-goal lead and see it out. Instead, they were on the – they were in the back foot. It seems crazy narrative-wise. They won, 2-1. Is it just something that Is it like one thing that Bayern aren't good at doing?

3:18Julien Laurens:That's just something they don't do Full stop, that's not company style That's not his DNA at all That's not what he wants the team to do He wants them to keep going Scoring a third And to be fair, they were close too I think I don't think he's just individual for Madrid The goal is a great movement From that right-hand side With Valverde, Bellingham and Trent and the delivery for Mbappe. A lot of the chances that Mbappe had, for example, was great and brave ball movement from Real Madrid, who I thought, again, with Pitak, Bellingham should have started. He was not fit enough to start. But with Bellingham, he would have been even better from the start than Pitak, who's young and inexperienced and doesn't have the football IQ yet that Bellingham has, for example.

4:02Julien Laurens:And you saw the difference when Bellingham came on. But there was some really good stuff on what they tried to do with the ball, especially the last half hour. And when Bayern gets a bit tired, when their press is maybe not as efficient, they're still going for it all the time with that intensity. But the changes that they make, the subs are not always as good as the starters. And then they get tired naturally. Although they run 9k more than Real Madrid as a team. That's an extra player on the pitch, which is crazy, really. But I think that leaves us with a really interesting second leg to come, for sure.

4:34Trent's cross was obviously, you couldn't make that up. It's tremendous. but then flip side, you could say he was at fault for the goal on the other end. So I guess there's give and take there. But what about Manuel Neuer? Because I think last time he was here, he had a nightmare. There's two late Jose Lugols. I'm not a Neuer guy, not because I dislike him personally, but because he's the historic Germany goalkeeper. But I have so much respect. At 40 years with his job constantly kind of under threats, rumors about his future this and that to come up and he made three saves off of mbappe two of them i thought were absolutely spectacular yeah um that's kind of like personal revenge after what

5:20Julien Laurens:happened before right yeah maybe you're right yeah he he was at four in the semi-final and the two hole where one of them when he you know tries to play quickly and launch the ball forward and they lost it and then he came back straight away he should have done better there it's funny because Because at the weekend, the Fiber game, he was not that great. But give him Bernabeu under the lights in the Champions League and he transformed himself. I think it's great when great players screw up and then are given a chance late in their career to kind of go and make amends, if you will. Lots more to talk about from Olisse.

5:51To go back on Bellingham too. We promised you, Olisse, we're giving you, Olisse. It's weird because kind of over the past sort of 10, 15 years, all these stats have come out by... And I feel like, you know, they get dropped in like every television ever. Every company has like a stats guy who drops things in there historically. Eulis is three assists away from breaking the single season assist record. Held by, do you want to guess? He's still playing in North America.

6:25Julien Laurens:In North America, Messi, I guess. Apparently, I get nobody tracks his stuff. I think Alisa's 28 and the record's 31. Oh, I thought it was 25. Or maybe it's 25 and the record's 28. Wait, just as an aside for Messi, it's crazy to think that he scores a bajillion goals and also has the assist record. Again, I can't verify this. I don't know. I trust it because the man on the television says so, so whatever. Look, you can say, well, it's a lot easier to rack up assists when you play with Harry Kane and Diaz is prolific and you play on a team that's very prolific and committed. I'm sure that's fine.

7:09Maybe if Alise played for Burnley, he would not have this many assists. However, when you watch him play, he is so fluid. He is so natural in what he does. He's so smart.

7:23Athletically, he had one sprint. you know we rave how fast and belly is and then bop it short he's not that but he has one spring where he just leaves everybody behind you don't expect that from essentially a number 10 type he's a number 10 playing on the wing he's he's not two-footed not fully two-footed but his weak foot is better than most people's good foot um i i kind of feel like you have a i almost feel like Like sliding doors, remember they were chasing Florian Wurtz? At some point, Wurtz, Musiala, Olyse, you got Karl. They just have so many of these types of players, or we're chasing them.

8:06Julien Laurens:Yeah, I mean, I think he's got to another level now. Even the Olyse from Palace, who was very good compared to this Olyse. This version of Olyse is nowhere near. Yeah, I think physically he's done a lot of work to get better, more powerful, quicker, more I think resilient as well in contact and duals and things like that, which you can see. And I think the confidence also comes with the season that he's having because he's having not just the best season of his life, but one of the best seasons any Bayern Munich kind of wingers have ever had. Any kind of wingers, you know, you look at Lamin and that's it.

8:43Julien Laurens:there's two in that kind of on that planet in terms of that position right now um so it's pretty incredible um i think he's a he's a he's a winger not a 10 that's playing white and i've got bit of an issue with deshan playing him as a 10 because i think when somebody's that good in one position you should probably keep him in that position but that's another debate for the summer and the world actually let's have a quick side thing on this debate because i think we were on an FC show together a while back and you were talking about France up front and I was thinking to myself you were lining up you were mentioning who was playing where right and he was Mbappe through the middle but whichever way you had it and I'm like wow he's like it felt like the way you described him it felt like almost everybody was playing in a position that they don't play in at club level or maybe shouldn't be playing in a club level or is it because Can you just run me through Yeah, so Barcola on the left Dembele on the right And then Olyseo has a 10 behind Mbappé Right, so Dembele who's played through the middle A lot, and it makes sense Because the man's two-footed, right?

9:49Mbappé who, since the beginning of time He said he should be playing on the left That's his best position He sacrificed at San Real Madrid Playing through the middle So it's kind of interesting that He's made this kind of unorthodox If you want, in some ways But maybe he feels it's the best way To have all four

10:04Julien Laurens:Yeah, he says it's about connections and things like that, which I'm happy with. There's no problem. Olisse is that good. He can play anywhere, really. But I don't think De La Fuente will play Lamine as a 10. I think there are positions for some players where you think, OK, this is it. He's so, so, so, so good. Almost the best in the world in this position. Why changing him? But, you know, why not? There's also a lot of fluidity within the French team. But to go back to Olysses, I just think it's for somebody who's so casual and nonchalant in the day-to-day life to then turn it on in a game like this.

10:41Julien Laurens:And okay, Carreras is not very good. I expect Mendy to start the second leg and that might give Olysses a bit more of a challenge, certainly physically or in terms of pace. But yeah, it was a delight to watch. Yeah, I'm imagining with Olysses probably also a function of he wants him to start. he doesn't want to have sort of a third midfielder midfielder type right he wants an attacking midfielder and therefore who else therefore you'd have to move somebody else to 10 right from from that front if you want all four to start right yeah yeah i mean dembele could play essentially a bit like a psg and him and mbappe have that kind of fluidity which i think it could be quite cool But on to Jude Bellingham We're talking about his fitness I mean, he's been back for a while now He's been back training for a while He didn't play over the international break He should be very well rested I was surprised then Surely the logical thing to me would have been Play him this past weekend Have him start Have him see how he feels If you're not sure that he can last you 90 minutes, rather than bringing him on, and we see he had an impact.

11:58I think he came on with, what, like 20 minutes to go at the weekend? Yeah, yeah, yeah. These are obviously medical decisions as well. The sports science people come into it as much as Arbeloa. But it doesn't seem to me to be good use of Bellingham. We could genuinely be in a situation where, I don't know if he's going to start this weekend, but you don't want his first start to be the return leg, do you?

12:22Julien Laurens:No, no. I think if we start this weekend, probably it's the fact that he probably would have had an hour in his legs against any opponents apart from Bayern and maybe PSG simply for the intensity that they put in a game and you have to be literally 100 or 110 % physically fit, match their fit, game fit to, I think, play against a team like that. Otherwise, he shows too much. otherwise what's the point of starting him and after 45 minutes he has to come off. That's probably the reason why he didn't start in that game, but I fully expect him to start this weekend and then certainly more likely, even more importantly really in the second leg.

13:03When you look at Arbeloa's game plan for this, especially in the first half when they, I don't know I was watching this game I'm like are they choosing to be reactive you know take the sting out of Bayern and then hit them or do they is Bayern leaving them no choice

13:24Julien Laurens:no no and I think they were quite comfortable really in defending in the low block and defending the box if you think if you think about it the two goals come from two balls that they lose by trying to play quickly that was part of their game plan to play quickly everything the goal kicks the free kicks I mean one of the goals comes from that free kick playing being played a bit too quickly, by the way, to try to catch Bayern because their fullbacks are so high, because you leave Upamecano and Ta one-on-one with Vini and Mbappe. So if you move the ball quickly enough, then you would get in the Bayern box very quickly, or in the Bayern half very quickly, and that's where they're in trouble.

14:00Julien Laurens:So the game plan was correct to you? Yeah, I think there was a lot of good things that they did. And again, we go back on the Noyos performance. so I think when they defend in their box they did quite well to be fair to a certain extent the problem with Bayern is that you lose the ball or you make one mistake and then they punish you because they're so good going forward they're so quick Diaz, Olisse, Kane, Gnabry I mean Gnabry's run I know he's probably the least good of the top four that they have but he's such a handful to defend against because he goes everywhere he's got that freedom a bit like what Dembele has for PSG he's a runner he's such a great runner And actually, I think when he came off, you saw a bit of a difference from a Bayern point of view because nobody really was making the runs that sometimes are just not served and they just run for nothing.

14:48Julien Laurens:But they unsettled a defense. And that was very good. But from an Abelard point of view, I think there was a lot of interesting things that he did. And maybe they could have, again, been paid off a little bit better. Yeah, the only reason I bring this up is that I feel like to some degree you have to play to your strengths. and I think the issue, of course, sometimes you don't have any choice but play in a low block. It seemed to me at home, playing in a low block when you have Trent and Carreras as your fullbacks, it didn't necessarily happen. I mean, Trent was at fault for the opening goal. Yeah, I mean, it's...

15:29I feel like you're putting those guys in a situation where they can hurt you, where a winger can take you, especially with those wide players, right? And Diaz and Alise, where they can take you on, you make a mistake. I don't know. I mean, I suppose he can say he... I would have wanted to see from Real Madrid something more assertive early on to say everything is fine here. We're not playing with fear. I think that would have been fine for a second leg performance, obviously depending on the first leg result. You know, because you go back into the whole like Miedo e Sénico and 90 minutes is a long time at the Bernabeu.

16:04But I feel like it kind of sent a message where they showed Bayern a lot of respect. And I just wonder psychologically how this is going to impact them going forward.

16:18Julien Laurens:Yeah, I think they do the same thing. But they've been doing this kind of diamond midfield. It was Brahim at the top of it when Mbappe was injured. We saw that against City when they used the whip really well with Valverde and Vini and really took apart the City defence in that way. So they've been doing that again. It's just against Bayern. It's obviously the biggest game, the most difficult game that you've had all season, pretty much. So they had to be even better in certain phases of the games, which they were not when they lost the ball and they considered those two goals. But again, I think when they defended their box, they defended pretty well.

16:53Julien Laurens:Even the two fullbacks, even the defence, Valverde helped a lot and it was almost a back five at times. and that worked. I think it can work again in the second leg because they will do exactly the same. It's just, will Noyar be as good as he was in the first leg? Can Real Madrid be a bit more efficient in front of goals and instead of scoring just one, score three of the nine-shot on target that they had, for example, and the two XG that they had? And don't lose the ball in those key areas because otherwise they will punish you for sure.

18:11From first call to final invoice. Born in the trades. Built for visionaries ready to stop operating and start automating. Service Titan. AI for the trades. All right, enough Real Madrid. How about some quick hits instead? Let's go, Gab. Paris Saint-Germain rolled to a 2-0 win over Liverpool in their quarterfinal. Jules, you were there. Considering Liverpool didn't even attempt a shot on goal until early in the second half, and Paris Saint-Germain created a ton of chances, does this feel like an opportunity missed?

18:44Julien Laurens:Yeah, I don't know. I think opportunity is maybe a bit strong. They played great. They should have scored more goals, sure. And if they had scored three or four... The tie would be over. Yeah, exactly. And now it's not over, and they would have to go to Liverpool next week. do the same thing again, but be a bit wary of the reaction that maybe Liverpool can do in six days and they would have to transform themselves massively because yesterday it was pathetic what Liverpool offered really from Arnest Lott's tactics to the players on the page to Van Dijk showing his bum on the first goal to, you know, not tracking a runner on the second goal.

19:20Julien Laurens:All of that, all of that, like basic error for a team that is the shadow of itself. So Liverpool might turn it around next week. Sure, they have a chance because it's only 2-0 when it should have been 4-5. But I don't think PSG sees it as a misopposition. They would have loved to score more. Sure, but I think they were very happy with the way they played. I looked at Nuno Mendes' face when he... I think it was the second one of his two counterattacks at the end where he just miscontrols him with his weaker foot and he just has this look of disappointment in his face. I think at three, it's pretty much over.

19:57I mean, it's not unprecedented and stuff. At four, as we know, nobody's ever come back from four goals down except for one. I don't want to mention that because that's triggering.

20:06Julien Laurens:Things have changed since, you know. But, yeah, I don't know. It just still leaves you that uncertainty. Yeah, but Liverpool would have to win three nil, which, again, is hard. They just need two nil and then it's extra time and it's a different game. It's hard to see. They would have to be really much better than what they did yesterday. And there was a big decision for Mournest Lott, Gab. he switched to a back three he dropped Mo Salah and didn't even bring him on as a sub are you surprised all right I'm in two two minds about this you can do the same as before and go out try to go toe-to-toe with them and then you get what you had against Man City at the weekend where you know half an hour and then the bottom falls out and you get destroyed so you do something different are Liverpool built for a back three or back five as it was no they're absolutely not There's no changes.

20:51He doesn't have any defenders left practically on the bench. It's risky, but this looked to me like desperation. What I did not understand is you're getting battered. You're only 2-0 down. You're getting battered. And you wait until 12 minutes from time against a team that has so much more energy than you do. Also, because you played against Man City at the weekend and you played your strongest 11, whereas Paris Saint-Germain played on Friday, right? And didn't play their best 11. Why wait so long for the changes? Then you make a quadruple change and no Mo Salah. Now, Salah, obviously, a billion issues.

21:29But why turn this into an issue as well? Why turn this into give people another further talking point, another further chattering point? I don't understand that. And he said, well, no, but we were all defending, and Mo Salah's better when he's fresh in attack. I'm like, yeah, maybe he's fresh in attack. Maybe he gets a goal on the counter. But this is writing off Mo Salah, which I don't know if that's necessary to do in such an explicit way.

21:54Julien Laurens:Yeah, I mean, I've been saying for weeks now, I don't think Salah should start. Should he have come on? Maybe. Would that make a difference? I don't think so. But regardless, it was stupid from Slott to think that this could work. I agree with you on changing something, but not to this, not to a back five, and not to come with zero shot on target, 0.18 expected goals. I think it's an embarrassment from a Liverpool football club point of view. This is not who you are, really. But I just want to say, I know Slotts gets playing for everything. It's his fault. This is happening. That's happening. The Strait of Hormuz isn't open.

22:25Let's burn Slotts. No, no, but yesterday.

22:27Julien Laurens:We don't have to be dramatic. Yesterday, he made a massive call. That was a massive mistake. That would never work. But yeah, but how did he think that could work? From the beginning, as soon as we saw the back five, it was very obvious that this would never work. Look at the game that Van Dijk, Konate, Gomez had. they were all over the place because they had to follow their play it was ridiculous and yeah i especially liked uh conata getting stuck out on the exactly it was never gonna work fabian reese hasn't played since late january and according to reports in the keep and others paris saint germain's medical staff has cleared into play but he says he's still unwell he has a boo-boo jules you're medically adjacent more than me this does not look good from me it looks good unnecessary from the outside no exactly i don't know there was a knock on his knee and And they thought it would not be too long.

23:12Julien Laurens:And then clearly he's still in pain. He's not feeling right, completely right. They don't want to take any risk. They're right. He's got a World Cup coming up this summer. So I think he doesn't want to take any risk either, which I can understand. But then why go out and tell people he's cleared to play? That's the part I don't follow. They're just quite honest in the medical report that they have every week on who's injured, who's not injured, who's recovering or in rehab. I think that was just part of just being honest in that way. to be fair, Zaire Emery is playing at such an incredible level right now that I don't have any problem if Fabian wants to take another couple of weeks to come back.

23:46Julien Laurens:As long as he comes back. Yeah, exactly. Liverpool fan groups are planning a series of protests against a proposed ticket price increase, Gab. Yeah, so this is going to make people in the US, it's going to make their heads explode because the ticket price increase, it's 3 % for the first year and then whatever inflation is after that right so it's not a big ticket price increase but one thing we know is this is why there's just different cultures in europe in the u.s the minute you even talk about this in europe and we're talking about increasing prices not on the corporates but on the rank and file people lose their minds so if you're really increasing these tickets by three percent ask yourself liverpool is this really worth it is it going to move your bottom line because this is not a huge part of your of your revenue base um i'm not surprised there's this reaction hopefully doesn't spill it over into more negativity that upsets the team and in their hunt for for top five finish barcelona fall at home to atlético madrid 2-0 jewels has changed very quickly at the end of the first half when paul cubarsi was sent off and julian alvarez delivered a gem of a free kick goal let's start with that correct decision yeah so we disagree on this i think because you think he's a red i don't think that jovani simone had any control of the ball whatsoever and the ball is behind him how can this be a red card when the ball is behind the player but the ball's behind him but he knows where the ball is he he can't control the ball he doesn't need to control the ball what the ball so the ball is not under control from him the ball is not his okay so Forget about the ball.

25:21Julien Laurens:Okay. So, Kubarsi runs into the back of his leg, right? Yeah? Yeah. So, Simeone runs across without the ball. Well, Simeone is running forward. The ball comes in. It's just behind him. He's behind him, yeah. He tries this. He tries what looks like some sort of weird controlling back heel. Misses it completely. Yeah. As he does that, Kubarsi runs into the back of him, right? Yeah. I just look at it as this. if Kubarsi doesn't touch him, the ball goes across, Simeone runs across and gets the ball. The other side, yeah? Yeah. The ball is coming from his right-hand side. Yeah. He's going on the right, the ball is going on the left.

25:59He's going to turn and go to the left. There's nobody else there. Yeah, so he can't score, right? What do you mean he can't score? Of course he can score.

26:04Julien Laurens:No, he doesn't have the ball. No, but he runs to the ball. Oh, yeah, he's going to go to the ball. He's going to go recover the ball. Yeah, but he's not... But he can't recover the ball because Kubarsi's run into him and knocked him over. He doesn't have the ball. It doesn't matter. You still can't foul somebody. Of course it does. When they don't have the... It doesn't matter. It's not a red card. You're not denying him a goal-scoring opportunity. That's why it is here. Is he going to score? I don't know. He doesn't have the ball. Exactly. He doesn't have control of the ball. So he can't... For me, it can't be...

26:29Julien Laurens:It's a free kick. It's a yellow card. But it's not a dog show. Exactly. For me, because the ball is behind him. He doesn't even have control. He doesn't even know where the ball is. We disagree on that. Yeah, yeah. But I think, you know, that's the way I... Okay. The free kick is great. Amazing. I've been so critical of him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's been so bad for so long. And then he comes up with stuff like this. Yeah, incredible. And for what is not a good season for him, really, when you know how good he is and he's had those really bad patches of games where he didn't score, sometimes he didn't even start.

27:01Julien Laurens:And yet he's, in this game, outstanding. Really outstanding. Not just the free kick, but all the work that he did up front. It's just very special. Where do you stand on what Flick was asking for the red cards for Mark Pruble? I mean, we saw Aston Villa and Tyrone Mings and Debo Martinez being sanctioned of a penalty for this and a yellow card. I think it should have been the same. The kickoff had been given. The ball was in play. He took it with his hands. We're going to disagree again because we also saw Arsenal against Bayern. Yeah. And that was not sanctioned the year before. Look, the referee, I spoke to somebody who's familiar with referees and UEFA referees after the Arsenal Bayern thing.

27:40It's just like, the referee, it's not about the whistle. The referee decides when the game starts, right? So it's 1 ,000 % up to him. He can whistle, he can start, and he can say, no, no, no, the game actually hasn't started yet. So it's entirely the referee's call. So I also think it's pretty chintzy to go and complain about something stupid like this when you obviously know what the intent was. now is there an inconsistency with the ming's call probably possibly i don't know what was the intent from atletico madrid's point of view the intent was obviously to waste time i would assume right so but it doesn't mean like penalty very clear like because then we do it again then then

28:19Julien Laurens:probably stops the ball play it back to muso stops the ball and then the referee books him for time wasting but he doesn't award a penalty because then that's what flick wanted i don't know i think there was a bit of a point there somewhere. Gab, were you surprised by how the two managers reacted to the sending off at halftime? So, I really was. And then I can see the logic from both of them. From Flick's perspective, I thought, okay, alright, this sucks. We're a goal down. But you know what? We're a better team. We beat them just last weekend. Let's go. We're not going to be defensive. We'll still give Lamin opportunities.

28:55Got to take off Lewandowski. but I'll put ballers in midfield keep the ball, make them chase us and see if we can get a mistake if not, I'm confident that we can beat them and level everything because we're a better team instead, what does he do? he takes off Petri now Petri might have had a knock I don't know but I said, wait, this makes no sense and then you send on Gavi who's been injured forever in his place and then I realized that the second half it turned into, it was crazy they had like 65 % possession and they kept going for it and going for it I don't have a problem with attacking football, but guys, it's first half.

29:28You can play your attacking football in the second half. Equally from Simeone, I said, you've got to take the game to them. You've got Eric Garcia and Gerard Martin at the back. You have Dani Olmo and Gavi in midfield. You should be overrunning them. You've got ballers. Now, both can say they were vindicated because Barcelona in the end held Atleti to just one shot. Simeone can say, oh, yeah, but that one shot by the only living sore loss in captivity was a goal. So now we take a two-goal lead. I think, so they both surprised me. Both know more about football than I do. It kind of worked out for both of them.

30:07But, yeah, and that's what makes this game fun, right?

30:09Julien Laurens:You were surprised too, no? That Pedro came off. For Pedri, he wanted Gavi to go and press. Gavi presses much better than Pedri. He knew that he would have a lot of the ball. Why are you pressing in the first half of a game when you've got the second leg to go. I think, but they could have come back in that game at 1-0 down. Definitely. But they can come back in the second leg. But why not come back in the first leg if you can? Because if you get it wrong, because you've got your silly defender, you've got Cancelo, you've got all these guys at the back who aren't really defending, and you lose 3 or 4-0.

30:39Julien Laurens:But he's also their style. Gab, you can't just change. I'm not asking him to be defensive. I'm just saying. That's what you're kind of saying. You can play possession. Simeone, game plan for this game was just to defend. At 11 v 11, they parked the bus, they defended. I think they had four or five touches in the Barca box in the whole first half. They had five touches in the second half at 11 v 10. That was the game plan. It kind of worked, although I think at times they were a bit lucky. But they go home with a two-nil lead and they should advance, really. A leg strike from the best on earth, Kai Havertz, gave Arsenal a 1-0 win away to Sporting.

31:15Jules, that felt a bit cruel towards the home team.

31:18Julien Laurens:Yeah, Athos Sporting and they're a good team. We know they're a good team. They've been really, really fun to watch this season in the Champions League. They can do a bit of everything and quite well if they have to defend deep, if they have to attack in transition, if they want to keep the ball. They've got really good players that could do a lot of things. Hulman not starting, not being there. He was suspended for the game. It was a massive blow because he's the guy in the midfield and the captain that makes everything ticking. And he plays a 19-year-old in his place. Yeah, yeah, which didn't do too badly, but it's not the same.

31:49Julien Laurens:So, yes, it's a big role, although Arsenal are very good at being very efficient in the two boxes. Raya, your forwards. It was a bit laborious at times, sure, in the way they moved the ball, but they also didn't want to take too many risks, as we know. And in the end, that one minute of brilliance got them the goal and the win. No Bukayo Saka in this game. No Izzy, no Timber. Didn't have the real Martin Odegaard either. I don't know I don't know you go down this route you need a really good goalkeeper which they have yeah because sticking with Arsenal Gab you've been raving about David Raya all year remind us why he's not Spain number one yeah so if Arsenal win the Champions League this year they need to build a statue to David Raya because those saves were incredible why is he not Spain's number one we see this happen all the time it's like a guy goes abroad young he becomes really good De La Fuente is a bit of a traditionalist with Unai Simon.

32:43I think there's a strong case to be made for Juan Garcia as well. That's how they view it. But when it comes to remaining calm and shot stopping, I mean, I think Raya is much better than Unai Simon. Juan Garcia is different because of the defenders ahead of him. I think he's getting a raw deal. I think he's exceptional. Yeah. Most protein drinks ask you to choose between results and taste. Bucked Up decided that's a ridiculous trade-off. 34:09Jules, the first legs are over. You know what that means. Time to play the percentage games. Percentage to go through. Bayern against Real Madrid. Bayern 2-1 up from the first leg.

34:20Julien Laurens:Yeah, we'll go 60-40 in this one because I think Bayern are outstanding, but they're also, like an NBA team, they also can leave themselves very exposed. And I think there's something there for Real Madrid to exploit. It might not be enough, but I think 60-40 is fair. They're going a little lower, 55-45. Then Arsenal against a sporting club, the Portugal. Yeah. Arsenal 1-0 up from the first leg. I think it's difficult not to see Arsenal going through at the Emirates on Wednesday. I'll go 80-20. I think Sporting are a good team. They're much better at home than they are away from home too, as we saw, for example, against Bordeaux-Glimt.

35:00Julien Laurens:And Arsenal at home, especially when they have the lead, especially when they can control things even more than when they usually do. They are the best in the world, really. So I have to go for 80-20. I think Suarez suspended for the second leg. I think that's a big blow for Sporting. I think Arsenal's underbacks actually kind of struggle to get a hold on him. I know Catamo and Araujo got a lot of the attention. I thought that was problematic. Is Timber going to be back? Don't know. yeah yeah ben white makes me really nervous too so but still as well but i'm going 85 15. gab your turn now atlético madrid barcelona and that two nil win away from home for atleti in the first leg yeah so look one of the big themes for me that we're hearing from our colleagues especially sidlow over and over again was just he was getting angry at all the stereotypes that people are throwing out about gritty dark arts super defensive atlético madrid and barcelona and the high line him look and i and i think that's nonsense um i think there may be some relic of that left in there and obviously basalona are more attacking sides yeah but i don't trust atleti to go out there and simply park the bus for 90 minutes if they do that um i don't think they're going to advance so i think this is going to be somewhat more open game if we see laminia mal did you see the one when he beats like six players yeah yeah yeah at the weekend as well my boy who jerry who did well we did well he did well for a while and then he got beaten at some point which by the way there's some commentator on television i don't i'm not going to name him because i don't know who he is kept calling him rougerie i'm like bro watch our league of coverage learn to pronounce a name but whatever um yeah i'm gonna go atletico madrid

36:5460 because it is two goals all black might be back uh i go atletico madrid 60.

37:00Julien Laurens:i go lower than that i'm not far from thinking it's still a 50 50 game i think if atleti can win two nil in barcelona barca can win two nil in madrid but i'll give it 55 45 because i still think that el cholo can park the burst and they could manage that lead so and if hulian alvarez scores goal yeah exactly and finally gab liverpool against psg and that tuning deficit from the first leg for liverpool yeah like i said i feel so much better about this if i were paris a germain if i had gotten that third that is such a game changer can you see a situation where something happens a mistake liverpool score early and then all of a sudden it's the anfield roar and they push on and he sends on Salah, minute 88.

37:44Yeah. That falls over in the box, converts the penalty, goes to extra time. And then Safonov throws it into his own net. The Safonov factor and the Anfield factor, to me, are the two reasons. Look, Safonov was fine. Yes, yeah. He wasn't really challenged very much. No shot on target. But it's going to be different in this return. And that's why I, obviously I still have Paris Saint Germain as favorites but I'm gonna go 65 35 because of

38:15Julien Laurens:Anfield and because of Safonov yeah 60 40 I think he's is fine for PSG yeah yeah yeah because I think you're right I think they would have to be better they would have to react they can't be that bad again shortly so what crazy lineup could he choose this time what about a three two five lots genius idea which one next Ahmad Yallo has endorsed Michael Carrick to get the Manchester United job on a permanent basis, Jules. Obviously, what's he going to say? No, I don't want Carrick to be here, right? So there's no good answer to him. But in general, we can't escape all the Solskjaer experience. Nope.

38:52I think United know this, and they're going to go through the proper interview process, right? Yeah, yeah. They have to, yeah?

38:59Julien Laurens:Yes, they have to, and Carrick will be part of that. He will have a chance to show his project like the other candidates. the players like him a lot the fans like him because he's obviously a former great player of the club but also because he's done a really good job since he took over actually that's not enough for United to say okay no problem we give you a five year contract especially with what happened before although Carrick is a better manager than Solskjaer will ever be there's no doubt about that so you know on that okay I get that I would give it more to Carrick than to Solskjaer ever but still I think there would be a process but you know what I wouldn't be surprised if at the end of that process, Carrick gets the job, sure.

39:38Julien Laurens:But there would be a process. Yeah, no, I think I completely agree. What I find interesting, though, about what's going on, like if United have like a wobble, if they have a couple bad performances, I wonder if the whole like commentariat of ex-United players in the media who are so powerful, if they come out and they say, oh, well, but you know, Carrick needs to know he's in charge that the players to follow him, give him the job now, blah, blah, blah. He's earned it. Like they did last time with Solskjaer, which led to, I think, basically a couple of wasted years for United. Or if they all remember what happened before, I said, no, no, no.

40:15Let the string play out. Let Kerik be evaluated on his merits and take it from there.

40:20Julien Laurens:Let's rewind to Mondega. Maci Apolitano scores late and Napoli beat Milan 1-0. Yeah, I was very happy for him after the Bosnia situation. I think this pretty much knocks Milan out of the title hunt, assuming they were ever in there. Napoli can still hope a little bit. Wasn't a great game. A lot of that had to do again. Allegri away from home, determined, oh, look, I'm going to keep it tight, wait for something to happen. No, bro, don't work that way. And so I think if Napoli finished first or second, they will have fully earned it, and it's a big star for them given all the injuries they've had.

41:00now sticking with Napoli Antonio Conte means no words when talking about the Italy job well it's right that I'd be among the candidates if I were in charge I'd put myself on the short list Jules what do you make of this?

41:14Julien Laurens:it looks to me Gab that he wants the job you think? he wants to go back there we mentioned that already on Monday's show he did a very good job there when he was there the first time in the Euros 2016 with a not really talented squad horrendous team horrendous team he did his thing at Napoli, you know, winning the title and it's not easy to work there, the Laurentiis, all of that, blah, blah, blah. He probably thinks right now I can have, I'm not saying that the Italian job is, you know, not as rewarding as Napoli or another club, but there's something interesting, I think, for him to do in terms of rebuilding, in terms of bringing more momentum, reconnecting with the fans, getting more success again.

41:54Julien Laurens:And I think he probably looks at it and think like yeah i fancy this uh you know what's funny is there's obviously been all sorts of inquests in italian media and stuff like that and yeah we talked about how blockages sort of young players come through they're actually pretty good but then they don't make the jump into the first team with the same regularity as they do elsewhere um i i saw the stat where i think it's over the last five years if you look at all the youth tournaments under 17, under 19, under 20, that's what it was, the World Cup under 21. Italy have qualified for 25 tournaments.

42:30That's more than any other European country, including England. It's just one more than England. It's three more than France. So the players are obviously kind of getting there. And they've won a few as well. And they've obviously also won a few. So it's a question of how do you make then the leap forward into the first team?

42:50Julien Laurens:Juventus, This will pass Genoa 2-0 and they move within a point of fourth place, Gav. Yeah, this was a solid win. They gave up a stupid penalty late, which Di Gregorio coming on and saving it. They thought he was a forgotten man. Jonathan David getting the start up front. He played pretty well. Yeah, but he still hasn't scored for ages. Yeah, but I think Spalletti kind of understands this dude's going to be around next year. And rather than going all old school and Milik or Yildiz to the middle. But yeah, Juve wrapping this one up. Early Weston McKinney scoring again. He's in phenomenal form. They need this top four finish, Jules.

Liverpool recently exercised his option year. he was due to be a free agent this summer so now it's 2027 does this make sense if you're Juve?

45:23Julien Laurens:I think he would be available this summer for you would think quite a small fee, I don't think he would be anything extravagant. Let's put a number on it using the Mike Mignon scale, if you remember Mike Mignon, a year left 20 million was what? 20 million, Chelsea ended up bidding a million less or something like that which is so, that's why they're doing so well with Robert Sanchez and your boy Phillip yes I think something like that for Alisson between 15 and 20 would make sense. I think if you're Juve with the experience. He's three years older than Mignon as well. Yeah, he's a bit older. But still, as we saw with Neuer earlier, with goalkeeper, it's a little bit different in terms of longevity.

46:01Julien Laurens:We like Di Gregorio. There's no problem with him. But this would be an upgrade. I prefer Perinho, but yes, Alisson. The real Alisson, you'd have to look at his fitness. You'd have to look also if he starts at Brazil and they win the world cup under collect or do some really well might that then change the dynamic at liverpool as well might that change you know the opportunities available to allison but obviously as far as um this is venture in europe seria is where the magic began yeah um yeah personally i wouldn't spend that much in the goalkeeper i would keep going down this line of get the team to improve incrementally but hey according to the guardian at least nine prime elite clubs don't have front of sponsors for next season after the new regulation banning bookmakers logos gab is this a big deal it's not a big deal they will get them um obviously by the way you can still have bookmakers as sponsors it's just they can on the sleeve sponsors and stuff like that on at the front i think it's good if they did this it's not something anti-gambling it's just something that so many of these bookmakers were bookmakers that don't even operate in the uk so they're bookmakers that the legislation and the regulations surrounding them, many of them, is really, really murky.

47:18There's some great reporting out there from Josimar and stuff like that. I don't want to say anything more in case these guys get litigious, but you can go and do your own research on some of these guys. Plus these stupid names. I mean, Manbet? I mean, what is that? Like a grinder or something? Or the Bet Anno? I bet Anno's a slightly different, but still, it sounds funny to me. It's not a big deal. Well, the bookmaker that the clubs put out, and I love it when they put out numbers out of context, and it does the opposite of what, like, ooh, the clubs have lost up to 80 million pounds. And I'm like, yes, and then you get a new sponsor, and then you make up most of it.

47:56And by the way, losing 80 million pounds spread out among nine clubs, not that much money, you know, within the context of the game. So, no, I think it's not a big deal at all. Leicester City's attempt to have their six-point penalty for violating profit and sustainability rules was unsuccessful, Jules. This is a team that won the Premier League not that long ago, won the FA Cup not that long ago. The possibility that they'll be in the third tier is very real.

48:25Julien Laurens:Yeah, another relegation potentially for Leicester. They're currently 22nd in the Championship, five games to go. So it's not impossible, but they are struggling. They're struggling for form despite having a huge wage bill, despite having still for some of those players, Premier League calibre players, really. It's unbelievable that they might be in League One next season. And I don't know what would happen to this football club if they were relegated again. And 10 years after winning the Premier League, as we say in the most incredible way, being down to the 30 of English football. Now, if you were a Leicester fan, would you be angry at the Premier League and the FA and the football league in this case for enforcing the regulations definitely not it's the way your club had been run you'd be angry at the chief executive and the owners the wages that they gave to players remember last season i think in in the whole of europe they were the 16th highest wage bill 16th highest wage bill in the championship see i would love these people i'm assuming all these people except for the owners who don't talk uh have lost the club have left the club now right yeah i would love for these people i would love for the for the fans to and maybe they do i don't I don't watch the championship.

49:34But I think these are the people who should be held to count. These are the people that really, really hurt the club.

49:38Julien Laurens:Absolutely. They've got an amazing training ground, one of the best in the country, and yet they'll be playing in League One potentially next season. Also back on Monday in Italy, Gab, Como were held. Nel Nel Aoudine is still fourth, but the lead of the fifth is just one point now, Gab. And their losses suggest that they might not get to play in Europe anyway, even if they do qualify. Yeah, 132 million euros in losses last season. I would assume it's going to be the same, if not higher this season, maybe higher because they have to pay Sergio Roberto and Morata as well. Their owners seem very chilled out about this.

50:15They talk about how, well, but we're not a football club. It's a lifestyle brand and we make money from merchandising and this, like that. I'm like, yeah, bro, but you still have a stadium that holds like barely 12 ,000 people. So like, how are you going to make this up? I think what works in their favor and it's going to be the test is if you haven't been in Europe for is the so-called voluntary settlement agreement, which is if you haven't been in Europe for a long time, you can come out and say, OK, look, this is our five year plan. these are targets we've exceeded them obviously at the beginning but can we strike a deal where we promise to hit this target next year and that target the year after that and obviously the losses have to come down and blah blah blah um they're very confident that they can do that maybe they can then can they stick to it i don't know i i know they they have like five pr companies working for them and they go on about george clooney and lake como guys if you go to como game you're not going to be sitting next to george clooney most likely right like i don't i really don't get this i really don't understand the business model um they say oh but we do so well in social media and we we've got all this merch and people people visit como i might get people visit como but it's como i mean with all due respect like it's not venice yeah right then is venice tried to do this not that long ago those are the crappy stadium they're freaking venice they get like 50 times the tourists that Como get.

51:48I don't see people walking around with Como merch. Extremely cool. Also, I don't know how much money you make off the merch, frankly. So, I don't know. I'll be really curious to see how this point points out. FIFA have opened an investigation on some of the Islamophobic singing in Spain's Friendly Against Egypt. There's a separate civil investigation, too. This is from Catalan law enforcement, because it is a crime allegedly what happened there this is inevitable right yeah we said it as soon as we

52:19Julien Laurens:reported on it after that friendly match in barcelona uh remember if you don't remember or if you haven't seen it uh some part of the stadium the spanish fans were jumping up and seeing the song like if you don't jump you're muslim which is obviously not on and not allowed in not just in a football stadium but anywhere really so that's right and again i don't know how you punish those people i don't know where you go from there but at least it's good that they're looking into it that seriously yeah i think what you want to see here is you want to identify people i mean you can there was a lot of them though so there's a spanish fa but yeah but i i would assume certainly in some countries you know who's bought tickets in that area you have cctv I'm glad FIFA are taking this seriously This falls in the same category as homophobic chanting As racist chanting And as we said, we praised Amin Yamal for coming out And saying like, hey, you know, I wasn't jumping The world has changed, guys Montreal, like Chicago, is one of the major cities That will not be hosting games at the World Cup this summer And local newspaper L 'Enquête has revealed why they pulled that gun.

53:35It gave you that question, because I wanted you to pronounce L 'Anquette. Yeah, L 'Anquette and Montreal. Well, it's interesting, right? Because people wonder, well, why don't the biggest cities go in hostess? And Montreal, like Chicago in the US, obviously major, major cities, a lot of football fans there. And so they obtained some of the conditions and they argue, and I believe this is accurate, that every city had to subscribe or every stadium had to subscribe to the same conditions. And in their case, they would have had to put in a natural grass field. They would have had to introduce a temporary retractable roof over the Olympic Stadium, which, by the way, is municipally owned, I believe.

54:14They said you couldn't have any events there at all between April 19th and July 19th, which is the day after the World Cup final. You couldn't have any events at all in the city in the week before the World Cup final and the week after the World Cup final. Bear in mind, the World Cup final will be played in a different country. and this meant obviously they couldn't it would have been a problem for the Canadian Grand Prix there's a famous jazz festival in Montreal, I don't know if jazz isn't my thing and they said we would have lost so much money on this and it's going to be really interesting the other cities if FIFA really did drive such a hard bargain how they think they're going to make up the money I mean it's not if you're LA, not such a big deal you have other stadiums or if you're New York or whatever But for some of these others, this really is a massive, massive, massive imposition.

55:08And I think there's a whole financial side to this World Cup. And this story is going to run and run. Legendary Romanian manager Mircea Luchescu has passed away at 80 years of age. Jules' tributes are pouring in. Put his career and impact in context.

55:25Julien Laurens:Yeah, yeah. Really, really sad day for Romanian football, but I think for world football as well. what a great servant to the game he's been incredible he was still the Romanian national team head coach right now during the international break he fell ill and then things after that got worse very quickly but he spent probably between the time that he played because he was a decent player he was a Romanian international for example and then coaching as you said Gabi died at 80 he would have spent 60 years on the football pitch maybe even more was successful everywhere he went from Romania to Turkey to Russia and then to Ukraine, where he really fell in love with the country, the football over there, to the point that even during the invasion of Donbass, he stayed when he was the Shakhtar manager, stayed and lived there, stayed with his players, stayed with the fans and everybody involved with that football club.

56:17Julien Laurens:An incredible guy, really. The football was also very good, as well as the trophy. I think that's why he will leave behind. Yeah, he won the UEFA Cup, of course, famously. Honestly, it's funny, I think he didn't really make, he didn't really coach a big club in, say, in the West, in so-called Big Five League. With one exception, he went to Inter, lasted three months, didn't work out. Prior to that, what stands out for me is when he did come to the West, and obviously there was an iron curtain and all these things that made it more difficult. he chose to go to Italy at the time when Serie A was the best league in the world and he motivated it by saying in part art and culture and you know there's more UNESCO World Heritage Sites here than anywhere else or whatever and he bounced around all these smaller teams but he really had an impact at Pisa, at Brescia especially.

57:15I wonder how and he brought a type of football that was actually was very very attacking very much based about what do we do with the ball at a time when italian football back then was mostly really reactive this is even before saki so um just just a giant of the game who who marched as they say by his own drummer um yeah the bosnian ball

57:41Julien Laurens:boy who stole gigio donnarumma's notes before the penalty shooter in the italy both in the bosnia italy game the playoff world cup final i don't know if you remember that but said that he would auction them the notes for charity are you okay with this um sure you do whatever you like with them i mean you want that's what went through i don't think the notes are the reason that bosnia won the shootout i also to some degree i'm not being funny here i'm all for um you know spithousery and whatever i don't think ball boy should get involved in this whether it's the uh cup of donations final or this going and taking somebody's thing or with the nonsense that hannah hampton said about taking the water bottle and then no but it should she really do it whatever it's just not it's not your place yeah um but hey whatever at least some money might go to charity i wonder what kind of loser is actually going to go and put money into this you're better off just making direct donation jules this brings us to an end yeah but we're going to be coming back to you on Monday because there's a big, big weekend ahead, including but not limited to Manchester City's trip to face Chelsea.

58:47How about that? Exactly, yeah. Until then, love the game. Love your neighbor. Love yourself.
