In short

ESPN FC discusses UEFA World Cup playoff semifinals and previews the upcoming finals, plus additional international match and transfer/injury talk.

Guests/backgrounds

The episode features hosts Kay Murray Alejandro Moreno (studio), plus analysts/hosts Gab Marcotti and Julien Laurens (“Gab and Jules show”). Later segments include Frank Leboeuf (former France World Cup winner) and additional reporters (Alexis Nunes, Xhaka Hislop, Ale Moreno).

Key claims

  • Italy’s qualification hinges on second-half impact: Sandro Tonali and Moise Kean scored to beat Northern Ireland; Bosnia is a tougher, more tactical opponent than Wales.
  • Italy must attack Bosnia rather than play a “patient waiting game,” especially away in a hostile atmosphere.
  • For the other bracket, Turkey vs Kosovo is a key matchup for World Cup Group D; the U.S. would prefer Kosovo over Turkey.
  • France look stronger than Brazil; Brazil’s defensive/midfield balance limits them despite attacking talent.

Notable examples

  • Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Wales on penalties after Edin Dzeko’s late equalizer.
  • Turkey beat Romania 1-0; Kosovo beat Slovakia 4-3.
  • Sweden beat Ukraine; Poland beat Albania; Denmark beat North Macedonia 4-0; Czechia beat Ireland on penalties.
  • France beat Brazil 2-1 (Mbappé, Ekitike); Upamecano red card; Bremer consolation.

0:18Hello and welcome into the latest edition of ESPN FC. Kay Maureen Alejandro Moreno here in the studio. We had some very important games today as the UEFA teams were in the semifinals. of the World Cup playoffs. And Italy and Pathé were taking on Northern Ireland. It was two second-half goals from Sandro Tonali and Moise Kent that sealed the deal to put Italy through to the final, the playoff final it is, in Pathé on Tuesday. We've got the Gavin Jewell show here on ESPN FC tonight, but only one place to start. That is with you, Gav Marcotti. How are you feeling? Italy just one game away. I'm feeling relieved that we've gone one step further than the last time around.

1:05But obviously, now it's all down to Bosnia. And can 40-year-old Njekko terrorize this Italian defense? I think that performance was there in the second half, in the first half. Northern Ireland, rightly so. they played their game they sat deep and it's and it's hard to break it down it felt like one of those sort of cup ties with with a lower division team and then the bigger team kind of like trying to figure out how to break through and you always need a bit of good fortune and and they had that and I think once they took the lead it became really hard for for Northern Ireland to get back into it.

1:45So Gab what's Gattuso learned from this performance like will it be pure Esposito in the final here because it was a big difference in the second half to the first half once he'd come on.

2:00I hope he's not going he's not tempted to go and just you know pick on performance I mean I think having Pio Esposito as somebody who can come off the bench is a tremendous asset you know Ritegui hadn't played a competitive game in several weeks so you know there was some ring rust there but I think it was also the case that it's hard when you don't have the ball, when you've got 25-30 % possession like Mourinho Ryan in the first half, you know, eventually it gets hard to continue defending like that, and it's easier to play with the lead, and Pio Esposito got to do that. So, I mean, personally, I'm not 100%.

2:38People will ask for him to start in place of Matteo Retegui. I don't think that's cut and dried by any means. and I think the big difference against Bosnia is that so many of these players play in Serie A so many of them are familiar and I think they're going to present an entirely different challenge to Northern Ireland. Props today though, Jules, to Moise Kane and Sandro Tonali in the second half. Yeah, and I think it's probably logical in a way that Sandro Tonali that is the key player today he's probably been of those Italian starting 11, the best player this season with his club at club level.

3:18He's been outstanding. He's the one that was going to deliver. That finish is so perfect, isn't he? And then he gives the assist to Moisicaine, who could have scored maybe at least another one, maybe even two. And I think this is the kind of momentum. You could feel the tension at the start, through the whole first half. It was not easy despite a decent start. And after that, it fell flat a little bit, probably because of that tension. But once that first goal went in, and then there was just no other outcome than Italy qualifying. Really, they were far too good for, I thought, a very poor, albeit strong defensively, but a very poor Northern Ireland team with the ball anyway.

3:51And next up for Italy, it is Bosnia and Hrto Gavina. Wales had had the lead in this game through Dan James, but late on, the 40-year-old Edin Dzeko leveled things out. It went to extra time and penalties, and Bosnia won the game on penalties to set up that final with Italy on Tuesday. So here's how things are looking. It will be Tuesday, the final between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Italy. Gab, my question to you is, how do you feel that it is Bosnia and not Wales? Did you have a preference here?

4:27I mean, not really, because ultimately you have to take responsibility. You're the 12th or 13th ranked nation in the world. you're going to have better players than the opposition. If you can't go and get it done against Wales or against Bosnia away, you don't deserve to be in the World Cup. You can't go and make excuses, just like you couldn't make excuses in the last two World Cup qualifying campaigns. I think Bosnia, like I said, presents a very different challenge. I think it's probably a cannier team than Wales. They don't have the fast strikers like Wales made. with Wilson and Brendan Johnson.

5:08Edin Dzeko, though, of course, even at 40 years old, so smart. I don't think he can play 90 minutes. He didn't play 90 minutes on this occasion. So I think it's a question. The biggest risk is that you try to turn it into kind of like a patient waiting game. If you're Italy, if you're tempted, you can't be tempted to do that. You have to take the game to the opposition. Come what may, maybe risk something on the counter. try to score, and then kind of manage the game from there. If it stays tight, I think the crowd's going to become more and more of a factor, and I don't think that's a good thing for Italy.

5:45What are your initial thoughts, Jules, on that final in Pathé?

5:50Yeah, I mean, personally, from a pure family point of view, I would have loved Wales to qualify and have this final in Cardiff against Italy. I agree with Gab. I think Bosnia is tricky. It's probably trickier than Wales in a way, especially away from home. You know the atmosphere is going to be hostile in a very different way than it would have been in Cardiff too. A lot of those players know Serie A very well. They know who they're playing against. They know also the kind of psychological factor will be the same than it was in this Northern Ireland game. You could expect Bosnia before the game in a pre-match press conference, for example, to say, well, the pressure is all on Italy, which is true.

6:27It would be a disaster if Italy don't qualify and cannot beat Bosnia away from home. So I think they put even more pressure on Italy in a stadium that, like I said, won't be easy to travel to if you're the Italians. But I think at least they've got that momentum. They will have a bit more confidence. And like Gab said, and I agree, and we've said that from the beginning, if you can't beat Bosnia away from home after everything that's happened the last few months, you don't deserve to go to the World Cup either. They can't miss out on a third streak, can they, Ali? Another one. Let me just tell our Italian fans, don't worry about it.

7:01We good. Italy's going to the World Cup. We good. Trust me. What could possibly go wrong? But what we do need, for certain, 100%, is a camera on K-Marie. Because K-Marie today, Italian husband and all, I haven't seen Italian fans celebrate a goal in the manner in which K-Marie celebrated a goal today. ah we're about to go on air no proof ah well somewhere there is a proof we're about to go on air and out of the corner of our eyes over there peripherally there's the goal by tonali and there was this emotion and anger that i haven't seen from camera come on get in there go on which tells you that for cameron priorities are peace at home who cannot relate to that yeah for a quick moment I turned into Kay Bonetti, my actual name.

7:52Yes, Kay Bonetti, yeah. She came out for the show for just a moment. But Kay Marie is back. Bam! Worry not. Empathy, Turkey A beat Romania 1-0. Meanwhile, in the other game, Slovakia played Kosovo, and Kosovo battled back to win the game 4-3, setting up a final on Tuesday between Turkey A and Kosovo. Do you know that whoever wins this one will go into Group D in the World Cup, where USA, Paraguay, and Australia wait. Okay, I'm going to start with you here, because one thing we do know, we talked about it since we saw that this would be the path, is that for U.S. fans, they don't want it to be Turkey.

8:32And there is a good reason for that, because they've actually played against Turkey not too long ago. In fact, not too far from here, from our studios. Rensselaer Fier in Hartford. And Turkey housed the United States and really exposed some of the difficulties that the United States can have against top-level opposition. And in this group, Turkey would be the top-level opposition against the United States. Now, they've also played against Australia. They also played against Paraguay. And they seem to have a whole lot more control in those games than they did against Turkey. And that's the one thing that I would say.

9:06They had no control against Turkey. Too many difference makers for Turkey. In Arda Guler, of course, they have that sort of special sauce, if you want to call it that. But Turkey exposed that with dynamic movement, the United States can get stretched defensively. We saw individual mistakes in that game. So if you go by that game and that experience, you would have to say that the last team that you want to see if the United States in the group play would be Turkey. You take Kosovo all day, every day. Yeah, it's been a while since Turkey were there themselves, Gab. It is. I mean, obviously, their coach happens to be Italian, Vincenzo Montella.

9:45So I've got a soft spot for the little airplane. It's not an easy job. And in some ways, especially in this game, I think there was a parallel with Italy's game against Northern Ireland in the sense that you are favored, you have the better players, you have the skilled players. And Turkey probably is better attacking players, to be fair, than Italy. And Gouler and Yildiz and the options. But you also have so much pressure, and you've got an opponent that kind of can absorb that pressure. It's almost like a psychological test, and we've seen Turkey fail psychological tests in the past. But, you know, I think they've built something good for themselves.

10:25And, yeah, this is not the kind of team, I think, as Ali said, that the U.S. want to face. It's not a good matchup for them. To be honest, I'm not sure Paraguay is either, frankly. so yeah so I think it's pitfalls all around if it does end up being Turkey who qualifies yeah but Turkey I do have to go now Jules to Kosovo we've seen them pull the upset today so it's not going to be easy yeah so Kosovo we're from home in Slovakia go ahead Jules yeah and I think it's a wonderful story Kosovo if they were to go to the World Cup it'd be even more amazing although I I think Turkey will be too strong.

11:08It's a bit like the Italy, the Bosnia-Italia game. I know that Turkey will have to go to Kosovo and go away from home. And it's, again, very hostile atmosphere and all of that, everything you want. But it's Turkey team, especially going forward, especially the front four is so talented, so good. This generation is very special. I think that I can't see how Kosovo can beat them. You know how you refer to this as the Gab and Jules show in today's show? Well, that's exactly how the Gab and Jules show goes. when Jules is about to say something, Gav jumps in and says, no, Jules, not today. Spicy tonight, picking on all those Italians, Gav.

11:43Meanwhile, in path B, we got to see Sweden beat Ukraine and Poland beat Albania for Sweden. We saw Jokeres hat-trick in this game on Tuesday. It will be Sweden against Poland in the final. The winner would go to Group F with the Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia. Jules, who have you got?

12:04I mean, Poland were not very good tonight Let's be honest here They won in the end Because they have two outstanding players In Lewandowski and Zelensky Even at Lewandowski's age That finish is great on that corner But they were not very good And I think Albania were harshly done really overall Because I think they were probably the better team I'm not sure I trust Graham Potter and Sweden Much more, to be fair, than Poland Because, OK, they won against Ukraine Ukraine were terrible defensively Ilya Zabani made two mistakes on two of the three goals. And that's how we ended, really. So I think Sweden probably at home, Gio Kovac in good form.

12:41The Sticks should be able to do it. But I'm not sure this is going to be a great game. How do you see it going, Gab?

12:50I agree with Jules. These are two teams that obviously carry with them a lot of baggage, a lot of things to sort out. Poland cannot play like this against Sweden. I'm going to lean Poland. I think they can get it done, but they need a reaction. I think Sweden are very vulnerable, very marked by their qualifying campaign and all the controversy and everything that happened. And I think Poland can exploit that. They have to exploit that to advance. In Path D, Denmark had a big win over North Macedonia. 4-0 to book their spot in the playoff final. It's Czechia who will be joining them. They took the Republic of Ireland all the way to penalties and won the shootout to book their spot in that final.

13:40And the winner of that final on Tuesday will go to Group A in World Cup 2026 where we see Mexico, South Africa and South Korea. Okay, same questions again. Starting with you this time, Gab. Who have you got, Czechia or Denmark?

13:57I have a lot of faith in Czechia. I predicted that they would beat the Republic of Ireland. I felt really, really bad when all of a sudden they're 2-0 down and at 6s and 7s. But that said, I think Denmark simply has too much sort of top to bottom, too much quality in different areas of the pitch. And also it feels like so many of these guys have been together for a very long time. It's a solid unit. I think Denmark, for me, pretty clear favorites. especially they're also playing at home, of course, which factors in too. Check you're at home on Tuesday. Oh, sorry. Okay. But I'm still going Denmark.

14:38Okay, that's fair enough. What about you, Jules? Yeah, I think so. I mean, Denmark, to be fair, I know there was this incredible last game of the qualifiers group with Scotland that we all know about. Even before that, they should have won the game prior, and they drew it and had they won that they would have qualified so they were very close and I think they've got another chance through this pathway now in previous times they would not have qualified full stop now they've got another chance I think they I think they will take it I think the way they played today was very convincing I thought which was not the case for Czechia and I think they will have enough to to beat them okay so that's how things are looking and now the playoff finals are all set and on Tuesday we will be looking back on them on the show we have plenty of international action for you on ESPN Unlimited and ESPN Deportes Friday.

15:28Morocco against Ecuador. On Sunday, Colombia against France with Alejandro Moreno on the call for this game. Tuesday, Scotland versus Ivory Coast. And Brazil take one to Croatia a little later on on Tuesday.

We saw two goals for France to win the game from Kylian Mbappe and Ugo Eketike. It was a match in which we saw Ugo Meccano sent off and Bremer get a consolation goal for Brazil, but in the end it was France with the win.

17:03At the stadium for us was Alexis Nunes and Xhaka Hislop. Here they are. Thanks, Kay. And are you not entertained? I mean, I did call it wrong. I got the score right. I said 2-1 to Brazil. You can't clean that. I know, but kind of Xhaka was feeling a 2-1. Brazil at least did come back. Had a little bit of fight there towards the end, but Xhaka, in the end, it really was all about France. We knew that Brazil would have to use this as kind of a measuring stick because of how strong France were. How do you think Carlo Ancelotti will feel they did? Well, Brazil certainly finished strongly. Maybe they take that and use that as some kind of a positive to build around.

17:38But the truth is, France were down to 10 men. Yeah. After Pemacano's red card, very early on, 1-0 at the time, France go on, and Equitique doubles France's lead. And France passing, even with 10 men on the path, was just something to behold. It really was. And we talk about, you see how many teams get it wrong, passing out from the back. You see France do it that way, and it was a joy to watch at this level of the game. And it spoke to how good they are as a team, as individuals, even as changes were being made, that they could still control the ball, to pass the ball in the way that they did.

18:17Yeah, a whole lot of changes started to happen later on, and Brazil got a goal, and there was something for the fans to be out of their seats about later on. But the truth is, I just thought that over the entire piece, France just showed how good a team they are, how much better than Brazil they are right now. Well, France obviously with the less amount of work to do before they head into the World Cup, but Brazil, what do they need to do, Xhaka? because, as we said, the fans are not settling for second, third, fourth best. No, they're not. And we spoke about who's going to be that player, whether it could be Vinicius Jr., who carries this Brazil team.

18:53You saw flashes of it. I think especially later on in the game, you saw that there's work to do in that front three, certainly around understanding new selections such as Thiago coming in. There is potential, but a lot of work to do and not a lot of time. Not a lot of time, indeed. So a lot for Carlo Ancelotti to think about. As for Didier Deschamps and France, it's all good in the hood here. They were able to do it on a cold, windy, cloudy night here in Massachusetts. Back to you, Kay. Thank you, Alexis. Thank you, Xhaka. Look at this. Kylian Mbappe is closing in on Olivier Giroud. 56 goals, just one behind Giroud's 57.

19:34And he's done so in less games, too. However, Ugo Eketike added to his tally for France tonight. Here he is speaking after the game. Your goal was a beauty. How do you describe your goal? I mean, Michael gave me a great assist and I saw in the first half in the goal of Kylian that he chipped on the keeper. It's someone that goes on the floor pretty quick so I just tried. I didn't have much time, you know. The room of time was very short so I just tried to chip it and it worked. Julian Laurent still with us is watching this game for us and Frank Leboeuf who won the World Cup with France, if you didn't know.

20:18I'm not sure it's been mentioned before on this show. I think it has. He's joining us now. So let us start with the World Cup winner. What's your takeaway from tonight's game with the France perspective, Frank? What would you like to talk about? I would say overall I was very pleased with the French performance. and it was even if, you know, the second half when they came back, they were a little bit still in the dressing room and this way maybe they went to 10 men with the Upamecano fair red card. But I was pleased to see that even with one man down, they managed to score that goal with a good pass from Michael Olysee and a good chip, as he said, from Hugo Ekitike.

21:05So it was hard at the end because they were 10 against 11, but overall I'm quite pleased with what I've seen and the potential that that team has, especially at front. With one action they can destroy anybody. They're so talented, so powerful, very good in transition. So I've seen what I wanted to see overall against a good team of Brazil, but we can see that Brazil I think is not ready to compete with maybe Spain, Portugal, maybe England and France. OK, before I get Jules' take on France, I do want to talk to you about Brazil. And we just ended there where Frank did. That's what we were looking at.

21:43If Brazil can cut it with Europe's elite. And the answer to that, not only based on this performance, but based on what we have seen in the World Cup qualifying cycle in Commonwealth and the difficulties that they have had, the answer is no. It is not a team that you fear. It is not a team that really demands respect from you. You see Brazil out on the field, and of course, they're talented players, and you got Vinny Jr., and Rafinha, Mateus Cunha, and you can bring this guy, you can bring that guy. So in the front end, it would seem like they have enough. But when you start looking backwards, and you look at the midfield, and you look at the back line, and you start asking questions, you kind of go, uh-oh, there are problems here.

22:30There are issues in terms of the balance of this team. How do you create enough for that front four, for that front three, to be able to exploit some of the talent that you have in Vinny Jr., that you have in Rafinha, that you have in players that make a difference on a weekly basis in La Liga, and yet they haven't quite been, in particular Vinny Jr., haven't quite been the player that we thought they were going to be with the national team, and more importantly, Brazilian fans thought that they were going to be with Brazil. The other thing I would say about Brazil, as it pertains to the comparison with France, there is no comparisons right now.

23:07France looks like a team that could possibly very well win this whole thing. And you don't have to make a whole big argument to try to build a case for France. You just see the talent on the field, you see them knocking the ball around in the second goal, and you go, yeah, this team's got something and something that could potentially be special. As for Brazil, when you consider that they have had four managers in this World Cup cycle, Ramon Meneses, Dorival Jr., Fernando Diniz, those three guys could walk into the studio and we would be, well, is this the facilities that are coming to fix some sort of camera that went bad?

Read the full transcript

23:42We don't even know who these people are. You have to be deeply entrenched in Brazilian football to know who these managers were. And in comes Carlo Ancelotti, who obviously carries a whole lot of respect and weight and history with them, and yet we haven't seen a whole lot better from Brazil. Better, but not significantly better. This team has round of 16, quarterfinal at the most, and then they'll play against a team like France, or they'll play against a team like Spain, or a team in that sort of level, and it's game, set, and match. I don't think they have much more than that, as you try to sort of picture what they're going to be in the World Cup.

24:17Would Brazil's missing players tonight have made any difference to this side, Jules? Yeah, probably I think Gabriel and Marquinhos to start with. As the two centre-backs, Bremer did okay, he scored that goal, but defensively I thought Brazil were not great. When France had those moments of possession in the Brazil half, especially in the first half before the Kylian goal, and then as we saw on the Kylian goal, they lacked pace. I mean, there's not many centre-defenders anywhere who could match Kylian Mbappe for pace, but still, you get the idea. I don't think the 4-4 would work in a World Cup anyway.

24:53I've been very sceptical from the beginning since Carlo Ancelotti tried to do it the first time round. You can look at it and he probably misses Bruno Guimares as well in a game like that, maybe even Lucas Paqueta. So there's other things he can do in midfield. But that front four of Martinelli, Vini, Cunha

25:13and whoever the fourth one was, I'm not sure it really worked. Okay. And so one thing we do want to mention is that we did see Rafinha have to come off. He was replaced by Luis Enrique. And one thing we have been seeing from the reports is that it's muscle pain in his right thigh at the moment. So we'll keep our eye on that and how things are looking for him. 27:12Brought to you by Argenics. But speaking of injuries. Oh, pain. Kylian Mbappe's knee injury misdiagnosed after Real Madrid staff scanned the wrong leg. That's what the reports say, that they performed the MRI on the wrong leg. But who do we believe? Here is Kylian Mbappe himself. But does he set the record straight? No, the information that they scanned the wrong knee is not true. As I said, I may be indirectly responsible for this situation, because when you don't communicate about what you have, and when you don't communicate about what is going on, it leaves open the door to interpretation, and everyone is rushing to fill in the blanks.

27:59I know what I'm getting myself into when I'm communicating or not communicating. Now, with Real Madrid, we have always had a communication that was quite clear, whether it was when I started my rehabilitation in Madrid or when I was in Paris, where I was accompanied by the doctor, a physiotherapist and the club's physical trainer, where we worked from Paris. So there is no problem with that.

28:27So mark a quote, Kylian Mbappé, that you just heard there in that interview saying, maybe I'm indirectly responsible, but I'm not too sure we're still fully clear on how these reports have come out. And so I'm going to task Julie and Laurent, I'm sorry, Jules, with telling us more about this because you've been talking about it on the Gab and Jules show. We asked you about it in the pregame. We've just heard from Kylian here. Why were we seeing reports like this in the first place? Well, the story first came from France in a radio show that Frank and I know really, really well, where they mention the scan, the MRI on the wrong knee.

29:07I think as we've explained on the show all week pretty much, and especially the boys who play know exactly the process when you go for a scan like that, an MRI, they put a call on your knee. So it's not you just don't go in your pants in a machine that scans the knee that is hurt. There's actually a process to it. And Kylian Mbappé would have said, hang on guys it's the other one that is damaged i think the whole thing is the the wrong mri is not true as kilian just said however which is true is that earlier on so before the mri a few weeks before that when he complained the first time about pain in his knee it's true that they looked at the wrong knee and they kept telling him it's fine it's okay it's not serious you can keep playing so he kept playing through the pain which clearly didn't help his left knee when they'd been looking for most of it at the right knee.

29:57I think that's why he said not so much in this pre-match press conference that he had yesterday, but on Monday when he had a public appearance for a new sponsor that he's working with now. And he explained that he was very angry at something, didn't want to really say what it was, talked about diagnosis that came late to him, too late for the injury that he had. And that's now, it's much clearer of what it was. But then as he explained as well, because there was a lot of tension between him and the medical staff at Real Madrid, that he didn't want to be looked after by them anymore, he also explained that when he went to Paris to do his rehab, then they had a lot of people from that medical staff to come with him to accompany him, so maybe he was blown out a bit of proportion and he started with the wrong information but in the end, the fact is still that at some point they looked at his knee and they were all over the place as the medical staff.

30:48I have a question. Right. Let's bring your youngest son into the conversation. Romeo, he turned five this week. Right. If he falls in the driveway, right, and comes to you, he would say to you, mommy, I got a nouchie. A boo-boo. I got a boo-boo, right? And then you would ask, where, Romeo? And he would say, right here, mommy, I got a nouchie right here. Okay. You're telling me that a player is being checked for whatever the issue may be and whatever pain he has on his knee, and neither the doctor nor the player are incapable of saying, right here, this is where it hurts. This happens in professional sports.

31:32This happens at Real Madrid. This happens at the highest level possible of elite clubs around the world. This happens that you cannot tell the doctor, it hurts right here. This right here hurts. We cannot say that. This is as ridiculous a story as you can possibly come up with that these things are happening and that it becomes the issue that it has become. This is ridiculous. Frank? Well, you know, the last time Jules and I were in the show, we say it's impossible. And I kept saying that because it doesn't make any sense. I understand what Jules was trying to say. But of course, agree with Ali's analysis where, yeah, he will tell, you know, I have a problem in my right knee.

32:15I feel something. So he will check. And if he by mistake changed the left, said, no, man, I told you the right knee. Because the left knee is OK. Don't worry about it. The right knee is a problem. So, yeah, again, it doesn't make any sense. It's like Kylian tries to, you know, be nice with the medical staff and try to put all the responsibility on him. being not clear enough. But again, it doesn't make any sense. It's impossible. It's impossible for the scan. It's impossible for the MRI. It's impossible even before the MRI. So that story is impossible. And at the end of the day, stupid. So I think at the end of the story, we'll never know the truth.

33:00But I was absolutely stupid. Okay. Something else we need to talk about, because there have been rumours that Rodri could be joining Kylian Mbappe at Real Madrid next season. And this is him answering questions about playing for Real Madrid despite his past with Atletico. He said, no, no, there have been a lot of players who've taken that path. For me, you can't rule out the best clubs in the world. I have a year left on my contract at City. I'd like to return to La Liga, obviously. The Premier League is my weakness, but it is also a very demanding league. For now, I'm very happy there. Kind of.

33:37Oh, Jules, does it sound like that to you? I mean, we've known for a while now that whether he waits and runs down his contract, whether he tries to leave this summer, especially if Pep Guardiola leaves, which I've said many times on the show, I really believe Guardiola won't be at City next season. But we knew he was going to go to Real Madrid. He only spent a year at Atletico anyway. It's not like if he was a club legend like, I don't know, Antoine Griezmann, for example, and then he decided to go there. And he's not even direct from one Madrid club to the other either. So I think we all know he will end up at Real Madrid either this summer or the following summer as a free agent.

34:16I mean, if I am to paraphrase and read between the lines, Rodri is pretty much saying, hey, my realtor in Manchester City, we're going to be gone. So we may have to figure things out here. We're going to get some boxes packed. We got to get the move ready. And Real Madrid, I'm right here. I'm right here. You can come and get me if you want to. Right now would be great. If you want to wait till next year, so be it. But right now is the time to do so. Ali, it's even worse. You don't have to read between the lines, you know. It's written. I want to go. I'm coming. I actually looked up a list of players who've gone from Atleti to Real Madrid when he said it's been done before.

34:59I mean, he's right. Hugo Sanchez did it. Yeah. Raul was in the academy at Atleti that closed down. So Real Madrid got hold of him. And we know what happened there. Thibaut Courtois. Thibaut Courtois. Not directly either. Okay. It went that way. It took the scenic route. Yeah, it went that way. Teo Hernandez. Santi Solari. Bernd Schuster. Beautiful hair, Santi Solari. Beautiful hair. Beautiful hair. So, yeah, we'll keep our eye on this one. We're going to let Jules go to bed, though, now. It's been a long day for Jules. He's been trying to work all out what's going on with Kylian Mbappe's knee, knees, whichever one it was.

35:29You can hear more on that whole situation on the Gab and Jules show. Jules talks more about it. That dropped wherever you get your podcasts. And that's all we've got time for on the latest edition of ESPN FC. But stay right where you are. Frank and Gab are joining Ale and myself to answer your questions on Extra Time. We'll see you over there. Welcome into the latest edition of Extra Time. We've had some big, important games today. It's been the UEFA World Cup playoffs, the semifinal stage.

37:28We found out who's going to be in the finals. It is a mouthful. There's all different ways to say it. I think I managed to get it out and explain where we are. We have Frank, we have Gab, we have Ale here in the studio. And our first question is, Gab and Kay, can you sleep more calmly tonight with today's results? Well, I'll put that to the actual Italian here, Gab. Gabriele Marcotti. Yeah, no, I don't think I would have. I would have slept tonight if this at all ended tonight. Because, you know, there's levels of humiliation and going out in the first round of the playoffs, the World Cup path or whatever it's called, path A, that would have been a little too much.

38:12So, yeah, onwards and upwards, you can logic yourself into saying, aha, we have better players, so we'll be just fine. But as we know, the team of the best players doesn't always win. You have to show up on the day, you have to perform, and there's variance and there's randomness and all that good stuff. So no, I don't think I'm going to sleep very well until Tuesday night. And then only if things go according to plan. But at least it is still in the plans right now. Go on, Frank. There is one thing that maybe can give some comfort to Gab and yourself, Kay. You know, in the 90s, France didn't qualify for the World Cup.

38:5494 didn't qualify for the World Cup and they won the next one. So, you know, you never know. After two World Cup missed, you can get it. You want to tell us some of the players that were in that France team that won it, Frank? Conveniently. I don't remember. I forgot. It's too long ago. But even beyond the Frank jokes, do you want to tell us some of the rest of the players in that team when you actually are looking at the France team you are talking about and this Italy team right now? Well, that's true. It's hard to compare with the talent that we had and what I see with Italy, which is very sad because we have none.

39:33I played against Italy and I played against big club in Italy. So the football in Italy is not the same, but you never know. I mean, we've been a lot of time criticized by the press, the way we were playing. Eme Jacquet was at the age, you know, to get out of here. And we were very criticized before the World Cup in 98. So, you know, it's maybe the same for Italy. Maybe they're going to rebirth and be exceptional for the World Cup in the summer. You know, you have taken this conversation in a different direction. You deflected to Frank. You went this way and that way. Can you answer the question?

40:15Because it is addressed to you and Gat. Can you answer the question? Yeah, I do share a bed with an Italian, so I think that he'll probably sleep more calmly tonight because he won't be talking in his sleep going through all the upset. And so... I share a house with two hybrid Italians as well. And can you share with the people the emotion that you felt while we were doing a show and we're watching over there the goal by Tonali? I don't know what you're talking about. Okay. People deserve the truth. They can handle the truth. I cheered for Tonali's goal. Andiamo! Yeah! I have a whole Italian family.

40:55I know, but it was an angry celebration. It was a celebration of like, finally you're going to let me sleep tonight. So the celebration. I mean, since we've been married, Italy have not been in a World Cup. So you're the problem. Maybe. Maybe it's me, Frank. Oh boy. Maybe it's me. It's you, it's you. For sure it's you. You have to find a responsible for that, you know. That cannot be Italy. It has to be you. Yeah, don't blame the Italians, okay? What's more worrying? A manager hearing voices or one who respects the ball? Okay, so this is to do with Gattuso and one of his quotes, which I think I've got here for you.

41:35He said, I'd be lying if I said when I put my head on the pillow at night, I didn't hear the voices saying, take us to the World Cup, take us to the World Cup, take us to the World Cup. I hear it. And this is certainly the most important game of my career, even if I've been coaching for a few years now. So what's more worrying for you, Gab? Okay, now, here's the thing, all right? If you're Rino Gattuso and kind of your whole persona as a manager is sort of like, you know, you know, baby animal from Baby Muppets and he used to run around the pitch, he used to act crazy and he used to be all about intensity and passion and drive.

42:18And yeah, you probably do believe that he's superstitious and he hears voices and so on. It fits the character. It's on brand. Leroy Rossiniar, because of course that's the guy who respects the ball, it's on brand for him too because, you know, he's got the little glasses, he's educated, he speaks in complete sentences, he's got this sort of new age zen vibe. I think the big difference between the two is that the new age zen manager in English football rarely works unless he gets the results. The manager who screamed or the coach in any sport who screams and shouts and is passionate and motivated, that's very easy for fans and frankly players to digest and to lap up.

43:06So in that sense, I think Gattuso has an easier time and I'd be a little bit more worried about Rossini, even if he's being perfectly honest about communing with the ball, respecting the ball, you know, whatever he likes to do with the ball. Who would worry you more, Frank, as a Chelsea man? Well, I'm worried for both. I think they should see a shrink, you know, at some point, you know, because they have to talk about something, both of them. Well, it's only, you know, talking to the press, it's only what you want to say, because we all know that both are saying BS's. So, really, I'm worried for both of them and for their future.

43:49You know what? Frank, I've known Rino Gattuso for way too many years. I'm telling you, he is not BSing. He really does hear the voices. He really is like this. He is not playing a character. You can go on YouTube, find the press conference he gave when he was in Greece when he started swearing in five different languages and mixing them all up. I mean, this is who he is, for better or worse. He has one great quality, which he's developed over the years, which is he knows his limits. He's not going to try to do, try to be too clever. He's not going to do, try to do anything too sophisticated. You know, he's going to work on his strengths and push his strengths and try to minimize his weaknesses.

44:35But this is, this is who he is. He really does, you know, hear voices, speak to angels, eat raw steak for breakfast. This is what he does. You would have a real problem. And I mean a real problem if you heard voices that told you to respect the ball. That's when you have a problem. The combo package of doom. All right. And I'm not expecting Gattuso to be sophisticated, for sure. You know, after what I've seen him on the pitch, you know, no sophistication from him. Tell him that to his face, Frank. All right. Okay. Okay. Oh, well, now I can do. Before, no, but now I can do. Sure, he cannot run anymore, so I can take that and run.

45:22You see, sticking up for Italians, you see? You see why people say the things that they say? There isn't a rhyme for happy wife, happy life, but it's like for the husband version, but it's that, basically, all right? In-laws, a lot, everything else. Okay, we started with the husband, then you went to the kids, and now the in-laws. Yeah, all the Italian passport holders in my life. Okay, will Neymar be on the Brazilian squad for the World Cup, Ale? He has a better chance now than he did before given the injury to Rodrigo. The issue with Neymar is very simple. Fitness has been a problem and continues to be a problem.

45:59And even when he was fit, allegedly, wasn't playing at a high level consistently. And if you look at Brazil, there are issues not so much on the front end of the field, is far more in terms of what they get out of the midfield and if they find consistency in the back line. Now, you would assume that Marquinhos and Gabriel would play in the center back position, and that would resolve that. But that still doesn't address the fact that on the right-hand side, you don't have a right back that is really going to be a threat in the attack. You don't have the same thing on the left-hand side. It puts a lot of pressure on the midfield to create.

46:33And then you would say, well, that's where Neymar fits in. But then that's one more player for Brazil that is really not going to give you work defensively. And so then Carlo Ancelotti has to say, is this worthwhile? Is the juice that I'm going to get from Neymar worth the squeeze? It's the circus of Neymar being part of this team. Is it worthwhile for me to have around this team? If Neymar is unable to show that he can be fit and 100 % and ready to go ahead of the World Cup, the decision with Carlo Ancelotti will be very straightforward. If Neymar plays lights out from here till whenever Calvin Chordes has to make up his mind, then it's going to be really difficult to leave him out.

47:17Because every single news outlet in Brazil is asking exactly the same question. Will Neymar be there? If he were up to me, given what I know now, not what will happen in a couple of months, what I know now, I would say, no, thank you. This is not a lifetime achievement award. This is about who are the best players right now for my team. Even we asked Bebeto on the pre-game tonight because we did the friendly. Yeah, we're all asking it. We're all talking about it. OK, next question. What do the guys make of what Tuchel said about Trent Alexander-Arnold? So this is about why he's been left out of England's friendlies.

47:51And Tuchel said this. I know it creates noise when you leave a player like Trent out. We had a call. I tried to explain the situation. He just has to accept it. It's just a choice, a sportive choice, a difficult choice, and maybe a hard choice and maybe to a certain degree unfair, but these choices have to be made. He goes on to say he knows what Trent gives the team and why there are other players in his place. Gab, I'm coming to you on this. I mean, I don't know what's unfair about the choice. He's been injured for a big chunk of the season. When he's played, he's been good on the ball and not good off the ball, which is kind of like the story of his career.

48:35So if you have a setup where you're going to accommodate him not being good off the ball, maybe you make a pathway for him. If you have two outstanding centre-backs like Liverpool have had in recent years, maybe you make a pathway for him. That is not the case with England right now. Right now, Esri Kansa is likely to start at centre-back for England. If you have no other choices or you don't have choices that you trust, again, not the case with England. Because, you know, you look at Rhys James, you look at Tino Livramento, you look at, he has other options there. I don't think he needs to, I think people need to obsess over it.

49:11I don't, certainly if I'd been there, I wouldn't have asked them, hey, why is Trent Alexander-Arnold not there? As if I were Brazilian and asking about Neymar. You know, we're talking about a guy who's got other players in that role. Yeah, sure, if he gets back to where he was before, fine. and maybe Tuchel wants the option of adjusting the team to suit Trent's skill set. But, you know, you're seeing it at Real Madrid this season. He's not at Liverpool anymore. He has to carve out a new role, reinvent himself, and then maybe that's his pathway back into the national team. But right now, you know, it's not unfair, Tommy.

49:50Go ahead, just say it's not unfair. Having people who are more reliable than you and perform better than you, that's not unfair. That's just life. Frank? I 100 % agree with Gav. I mean, it's not unfair because you have better players than him. And Tourelle tries to find stability at the back and a real defender. And if you have Regime or you have Livermanto, I think in his comment, Tourelle was talking even about Ben White. I don't know if Ben White wants to play for the national team now. but he was naming players that are better than Trent Alexander-Arnold defensively. Yes, of course, offensively what Trent can bring is very interesting, but I don't think it's what Tourelle is looking for.

50:38So that's not unfair. The choice is a fair one according to what Tourelle wants. Agree with the guys? Yep. I sure do. Frank, be honest. Does France have any chance of winning the World Cup with Konate and Upamecano in the defence? You know what? That's crazy because that was the ninth or the tenth time that they played together and they started together. They never lost a game playing together ten times. So it says a lot, you know. But yes, yes, of course, if you compare with some other duels, you know, throughout the French national team history, like Blanc de Sailly, like, oh, I forgot, sorry.

51:26No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Le Bonneau said he was pretty good too. I wanted, no, no, no, no, Umtiti and Varane, I wanted to, Umtiti and Varane, that was, that was stronger for me. But again, it works. Conate and Upamecano never lost when they played together. And today, before Upamecano red card, it was working better than the Brazilian defense, even if Gabriel and Marquinhos weren't there. But it works. And so far, Deschamps has to be satisfied with the duo. I'm not worried. I'm not worried because we have many on the back and that's good enough. Can I also make a point about this? Since we have a guy who played centre-back here at a rather high level, if you look around and you ask yourself what countries have rock-solid defensive pairings that we all feel really, really good about, it's not many.

52:27Look at Spain's centre-backs. Look at England's centre-backs. Look at Argentina's likely centre-backs. I don't see Barres and Costa Couture back there. A lot of people have issues at centre-backs. It's a great segue for the next question, guys. That's a very good point. It's the next question. That's a very good point he made. Wait there, Frank. Yeah, let me see it and then you can continue your point. The next question says France have the best attack. Spain have the best midfield. but who has the best backline in international football? So go ahead, Frank. My concern about the football in the new era and this era, I think that coaches forgot to teach players how to defend.

53:17And it's hard to name somebody like Sergio Ramos before or others. Van Dijk was like that at the beginning of his carry and since he's been injured, he changed. But I have a hard time to say, oh, what a defender. What a strong guy. Yeah, you have Saliba, you have Gabriel, you have Marquinhos. That maybe. Maybe it's Brazil at the best pair in the central defense. Maybe. That's why maybe they can do something during the World Cup. But after that, it's complicated. But yeah, Spain has the best midfield, but they have very good people at front as well. And France, they have a good midfield as well.

54:01And I think France are better than Spain defensively. There is a contest, of course, but I think they are better. Good question, isn't it? Well, I think what we can all agree, and I don't want to make this about Italy, but it fits the conversation. There are no kind of arrows walking around. And even the top-end centerbacks, those that you would consider to be elite, the best. You name whoever you may think is the best. Still not as good as the best was back then. And maybe Frank has a valid point in terms that there has been so much conversation about ball possession and attacking players and building from the back that you forget about the actual art of defending.

54:47There isn't enough, at least in my estimation, enough nasty defenders. Enough players that, as a striker, you would be very knowledgeable and conscious as to where they are on the field. Players that are intimidating. That their presence on the field and their leadership on the field really dictates how the game is going to be played. Even those that are the best, and you can consider that maybe Opamecano is among the best, You can consider that Conate may be among the best. I don't think they are, but they could very well be in that conversation. You watch those guys play, and they're mistake-prone.

55:25You couldn't say the same thing about the defenders of Frank's time. The best of the best at that level back in those days seem to have distanced themselves from the best right now. Okay. Next question. Yeah, go ahead, Gab. No, sorry, I think it's also telling that, you know, we can conclude that Brazil and Gabriel and Marquinhos, if you want to say they have the best centre-back pairing in the world, it's also pretty telling that neither of those two is the best centre-back on their club team, because I think most people would take Saliba and Pacho ahead of those two respectively. So, So I think that's a very, very valid point that Ali's making there as well.

56:12That, you know, in terms of the dominant defender who's in that role, maybe you could have put Van Dijk up there until recently. But yeah, there's sort of a vacuum for somebody to step into right now. Next question. What's the biggest penalty shootout you were ever a part of? Oh, boy. All of them, when I was part of it, and we won. It's the one that stands out, though, Frank. Now, really, I don't remember having a long shootout session, you know, like finishing eight, nine. I don't remember that.

56:54I don't remember that. No, nothing really. comes out for me, but no, nothing. 2011 Copa America semifinal against Paraguay and Gap's friend Ortigosa, good Lord, I hated that guy. In any case, and he scored a penalty, I believe, in that penalty kick shootout. We lost the semifinals in Copa America 2011 in penalties against Paraguay. And it's actually one of the things that bothers me the most if I look back in my career, which I don't do often, But if I were, when I sat back, I've already been taken out of the game by then. But there was a thought as the game was going into penalties. I wanted to go and tell our coach, hey, if we go to penalties, our second goalkeeper, he's longer and was really good at penalty kicks.

57:47And I knew this because we would take penalty kicks against both the starter and the second goalkeeper. And I hesitated in making that decision. And I always looked back. It wasn't my job to make that decision. but I always, that at least I should have floated the idea. Then maybe we go with this guy, this guy is more difficult to score against in penalties. I didn't and so that still, even now, still bothers me. One of those things that keeps you up at night. Yes, yes, yes it does. It's like Italy not making it to the World Cup. We'll see, that's going to be the case. All right, Ale, which team are you supporting for the World Cup this summer?

58:26Just don't mind why he has to do that, thanks. Well, I've had to do that my whole life. You know, I've never had the pleasure of supporting my own national team, not when I was a player, not in the World Cup. And usually it was, for those of us in Venezuela, you had a choice to make because we would support a South American team and it was either Argentina or Brazil. and when we were in the 98 World Cup my brother my dad and I were gallivanting all over France with Brazilian jerseys on and people would be like oh is you guys hardcore Brazilian fans no we're actually from Venezuela so historically we would have supported Brazil but now not really because once you start playing against this team I think they lose sort of that magic that you had as a kid and and you lose that sort of fanatism if you will you're not you're not so keen to go and support other people that are not wearing your jersey and so yeah i i wouldn't support any of them i would like south american teams to do well but we're here in the united states us obey baby huh line of the free home of the brave world cup here in the united states it's better for all of us that cover the game in this country for the United States to do well.

59:49Nice stuff. That's very strange, you know, because Kay is supporting Italy. What's Italian? Ali is supporting Brazil. And I received a picture from Dan. I invited Dan. I found four tickets from the French Federation, four tickets for his wife, Brazilian, and his two kids. And he sent me a picture of him with the Brazilian tracksuit. and say, thank you for the ticket, but come on, Brazil. You know, people are strange nowadays, you know. They don't want to support their own country. He didn't just send a picture. He also put it on social media just to let everybody know that he was supporting Brazil on Frank's ticket.

1:00:26Frank, I would support Venezuela if I could. If Venezuela were in the World Cup, you would see me with a jersey all along. No, you have an excuse. The two others, they don't, you know. They don't. Football is coming home and they don't care. Let's see how Brazilian he is if Brazil face England. All right. Okay. Ooh. Yeah. Yeah. I know. It will turn. It will turn his back. Yeah, I know. Absolutely. All right, guys. Thank you so much for sending in your questions. We will be back tomorrow to do it all over again on Extra Time.
