In short
ESPN FC panel reacts to World Cup action, focusing on Lionel Messi’s two-goal performance in Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria (Argentina top the group and advance to the round of 32), then discusses Golden Boot races (Messi vs Mbappé vs Haaland), rain-delay drama in France’s 3-0 win over Iraq, and off-pitch storylines including Julian Alvarez’s transfer saga and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal dressing-room tensions ahead of a must-win vs Uzbekistan.
Guests
Ali Krieger (two-time world champion; former USWNT player/analyst), Nadam Anua (QPR Manchester City’s “finest”; club/football analyst), Frank LeBoeuf (two-time world champion; former France player/analyst), Julian Laurent (football analyst).
Key claims
Messi has five Argentina World Cup goals and is “not slowing down” at 39; Argentina’s midfield balance and depth (Lautaro Martinez, Julian Alvarez, Thiago Almada) enable Messi’s impact. Messi missed a penalty; LeBoeuf cites his own higher career penalty success (93% vs Messi’s 78%). Haaland scored twice vs Senegal (Norway 3-2). Mbappé hit two vs Iraq/France’s 3-0, reaching 100 caps and a goal-per-game World Cup run. Alvarez wants a transfer; Atletico says Barcelona can’t buy him unless the 500m euro release clause is paid. Ronaldo debate: panelists largely say start him vs Uzbekistan despite criticism and ongoing team tension.
Notable examples
Messi’s second goal described as coming from the right into the middle; Haaland’s physical “cyborg” style; Mbappé’s 100th-caps milestone; France’s 2h10 rain delay; Semenyo’s England-born vs Ghana choice; England fan “Wonderwall” in Boston.

1:27We'll react to all the drama from another exhilarating day in the World Cup. Plus, can Cristiano Ronaldo find his scoring boots as the pressure wraps up on him and Portugal? ESPNFC is next.
1:48Hello everyone, good morning and welcome to ESPN FC. I'm Alexis Younes alongside two-time world champion Miss Ali Krieger and QPR Manchester City's finest Nadam Anua. Lots to talk about when we're talking about the World Cup, but there was one man that stood above the rest after his performance yesterday. And yes, it was this one. Lionel Messi who took the headlines everywhere and model leyenda in legend mode and Messiahs then mundial the Messiahs of the World Cup absolutely brilliant stuff that we saw from Leo Messi yesterday once again putting Argentina on his back on their way to a win and into the round of 32 let's also welcome another world champion of ours Frank LaBeouf who I'm so happy dressed up in his finest clothes for us today and Julian Laurent as well.
2:42Frank, let me start. Actually, you are most welcome, Frank. I'm glad you put on your Sunday best for us. But let me start, of course, with our Ali Krieger. Ali, Messi turns 39 tomorrow, but there's absolutely no signs of slowing down. No, he's been brilliant. He's scored five goals, every single goal for Argentina. He's just navigating the game a lot differently now where he just puts himself in really good positions to be able to look like he's having fun. He's happy. He's just incredible. He's been remarkable. And there's no signs of him slowing down. I know at 39 I had retired. I'm not comparing myself to Messi by all means.
3:22Retired on a win. But the way that he's playing, I mean he's just understanding the game a lot more. He's so experienced. he's now just thinking of how his body feels physically rather than just running it through the ground. And I think he's been unbelievable. And I love watching him play. And I'm so grateful that we get to sit here and talk about this and see this in real time happening. Yeah, that's right. Now Lionel Messi is the most prolific goal scorer at World Cups. Kylian Mbappe just two goals behind him. So we have quite a race on our hands. But, Nadim, when we talk about Lionel Messi now, I mean, it's almost like what more is there to say?
3:58Ali said he's playing with such freedom now, but he still is playing almost like he has points to prove when we look at his performances. Yeah, for sure. And I think, for me, that comes from his love, not just of playing football, but playing football for Argentina. Yeah. You know, this is everything to him. You see the icons that came before him. You can see how he's an icon now. And the way that his players play for him, they play around him, the way everybody feels towards him. What I love is the fact that he's actually really quiet, like a humble person as well. I think for that level of adulation, you think, oh, he's going to be fancied, he's fancied, I'll make it about him.
4:28But it's not the case. And I think in some ways, like his age, I've got to say, by the way, 39 is a great age. Maybe speaking from experience, it's a great age. You still doing that? Just for now. I was talking about the age, not the play. But I think the way this Argentina team plays and it's a really good Argentinian side, it suits how he plays. And it has done for a long time now. And I think that's something that allows him to be able to perform to this level. and as opposed to other people who are getting older where the question is, can they keep up with the way that, say, football is now?
4:56No, it doesn't matter to him because he is so, so good and his impact will always be felt whether he scores, doesn't score. You know he's going to have an impact on the game. Yeah, and I know Frank and Jules, of course, are probably team Mbappe when it comes to being the greatest goal scorer of all time in World Cups. There's still a race on our hands, but Frank, when you see Messi does what he does and does it so well, how can you not love it, right? Yeah, that's unbelievable. And that's crazy because on the second goal, for example, he almost started in the action and came from the right side and came into the middle and finished the action.
5:33But it seems to be like Paredes. He don't want to score, wanting to give the ball to Messi to finish the action. And it's what happened. And that's insane because, as he said, he's not playing to beat records. He's not playing because he's going to be 39 and counting down you know his time in football he's just playing with the fun he's just playing because he feels good he feels physically very good and we can see that so the guy is not at the end of his other story he's he's just in the middle of it for him and he's just carrying on producing joy for everybody to watch him he has there is a race with Mbappe I think Mbappe is to overtake him very soon but what Messi is doing right now is just unbelievable.
6:19Jules, what did you make of the game? Yeah, I mean I agree with everything that's been said already in the sense that this is a team that is built around him, plays for him, that every player knows exactly what he has to do to make this team win and the only way this team can win really is with Messi to shine like he did in those first two games. I didn't think their performance against Austria was that great, really, even if he scored that penalty early on, but it works. Everything they do, the balance that they found with that midfield, how complement they are to each other and to Messi in the end just works great and they have depth in their squad, they can make some substitutions.
6:57We saw Lautaro Martinez starting, then Julien Alvarez comes on, all that kind of stuff, but Thiago Almada who's hardly played for Atletico Madrid this season for example at club level, is here in this team as a starter for a reason. He's maybe not the best of what is available to Scaloni for this team, but he works really well with Messi and with that midfield behind Messi and Lautaro Martinez. So, it works great. And I think if the World Cup lasted the whole season, like, you know, 38 league games, for example, we would not see Messi doing this every time. But on a short tournament like this, over seven or eight games, because I'm not sure he's going to play now that they've topped the group already, that's perfect for them and perfect for him at his age.
7:37Yeah, well, superhuman, invincible. We use all these words to describe Lionel Messi but believe it or not, he apparently does have a kryptonite. Remember, he could have had another goal yesterday but he missed this penalty. I think that was a surprise to many but if you do look at the stats, it may not surprise you too much. Now, our Frank LaBeouf knows a thing or two about taking some penalties and just look at the numbers. I keep saying comparison is the thief of joy but we had to compare. Men lie, women lie Frank LeBeouf is better at Pens than Messi. Indeed, look at that. Messi now with only a 78 % success rate at his penalties in his career.
8:16But Frank LeBeouf, 93%. You do not get more clinical than that. Look at Frank recording himself. Keep the graphic. Keep the graphic. I want to take a picture of that graphic. There you go. Thank you. Frank LeBeouf, dare I say. Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me or what? You are better than Lionel Messi. I did. Yes. Who would believe that? You know, but that's, I think. And you know what struck me the most is the fact that he missed the target, the goal. Because he's so accurate. And I never missed the goal because, I mean, it's seven meters, a little bit more than seven meters. I never thought somebody like Lionel Messi would miss.
9:02I remember Platini, quarterfinal against Brazil, I think if I'm not mistaken, in 1986. He missed also the net. And I said, well, it's impossible for those players. And I never missed the net. I missed some goals, like four goals in my career. But really, I was really amazed that he missed the tag. Maybe he had some pressure. Maybe he doesn't feel completely freed when he does that. but he attempted so many of those, like 114 we saw. If I can see the graphic, it's huge. 100 and something penalties to shoot. You have the right to be only 73 and be behind me. And be behind me, Mr. Messi. Sorry about that.
9:44Nice haircut, Frank LeBeouf, by the way. I was going to say, Frank LeBeouf with hair. Wow, who would have thought it? Natum, what do you make of those stats? I know all the respect you do have for Frank LeBeouf, but when you say that, do you feel better about yourself? that, you know, even Messi can miss a pen. To be fair, I never missed a penalty either. Oh, get the Nenem Anua stats up. Also never took one. Also never took one. Thank you, Jules. Thank you for finishing that off. But I think I've got to give credit yesterday to the Austrian goalkeeper. Because for the way that people do the run-ups these times, like, the longer you can wait, the more you can affect the way that they see the goal.
10:16I think Messi was probably waiting for him to just lean slightly one way. And then all of a sudden, it's got to be the perfect penalty, which is probably why he's missed to the side. I know that's, some people say that's like cope for Messi. But it's still, I'm with Frank, he shouldn't really miss the target. But fair play to the goalkeeper for doing his research and understanding, like, this is the way to give yourself the best chance. Ali? I just would never look at the goalkeeper if I am taking a PK. I would just set the ball up, just keep my eyes on the ball, and then go every single time to the same way that we train.
10:43And so it was, you know, a bit of a shock that he did miss. But despite the fact that that happened, he is carrying this team, and he has five goals, and he's leading the Golden Boot already. and he is just never going to stop. I mean, he is unbelievable to watch. And he came right back and scored a goal. Do you know the funny thing about it, actually? So the tickets to watch Messi will probably be the highest in this whole tournament. And when the penalty is given, you know, everyone had their phones out. Everyone's like, I'm going to witness history. This is it now. Frank just had his out. The amount of videos that probably got deleted yesterday.
11:14It'd be hilarious. That is very true. Indeed. All right. Well, we showed you how Messi has been taking all the headlines around the world. This is the headline for L 'Equipe. Now, keep in mind, this headline came out while France was actually playing, but it had Maître du Monde. I hope I said that right, Frankie. That means master of the world. Well, Messi was just pretty much getting everybody's attention last night, and this is what our Janaga Fjortov had to say about him yesterday on the show. I'm in Austria. I worked in the studio today and they played Austria. And, you know, after the game, Ralf Ragnik, all the players, they said, why did I lose the game?
11:58Lionel Messi, Lionel Messi, Lionel Messi. He's just walking around. He's looking like, he's like in a jungle. He's like a lion just looking there. Where can I go? Which space? I mean, this guy is, I mean, is there a word that can describe him? I tried in the studio to compare him with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the composer from Salzburg, who was a genius, who had his operas in his head. He didn't have to write them down. I mean, this man is a genius. I mean, whatever you say. I mean, when I talked to my dad, he said, yeah, I saw Pelé. What a player he was. I will tell my grandchildren about a guy called Lionel Messi because he is turning in to be the best ever.
12:44Well, let's have a look at Argentina's group, shall we? because their 2-0 win yesterday over Austria means that they topped the group on six points and then Algeria beat Jordan by two goals to one. So that also confirms Argentina as group winners. Right, well, there was a lot of drama off the pitch as it relates to La Raña, Julian Alvarez. Now, you know that he has been linked away from Atlético de Madrid and he spoke to our ESPN Argentina reporters and had this to say as all the headlines were saying that in Spain. He said, I don't think it's the right moment to talk, but I also don't want to hide.
13:22I tried to be an honest person. I spoke with the people at Atletico who I needed to speak with. I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfill my dream. Now, he's been heavily linked to Barcelona, and this is what Atletico de Madrid had to say about the whole situation. There is no amount of money for which Barca can buy Julian. He will not be transferred to Barcelona. Either they pay the release clause of 500 million euros or there is no deal. Well, you know I love to be very petty, but nobody does petty quite like Atletico de Madrid's admin. Now, this is what they put up yesterday after Argentina got their win.
14:06Great win for our Argentinians. And if you have a look, there is one missing, and that, of course, is Julian Alvarez. So this is also scenes from what's going on in Spain, because Atleti fans and the hinchas everywhere have already started burning his jersey. Someone who definitely became somewhat of a bit of a cult hero at Atletico de Madrid, now turning into what looks like their number one enemy. me alright Jules how does this and because it's getting pretty toxic especially when the player has publicly said on the world's biggest stage that he has asked for a transfer yeah I mean we knew that he asked for the transfer we knew that there were talks between him and his agent and atlético a few weeks ago the problem I I think if if the player really obvious caliber really wants to leave although he's got four years left on his contract let's not forget I think if you're atlético you just know okay he doesn't want to be here, there's no point keeping him here against his will.
15:04We can find a club, get a lot of money, reinvest that money. Okay, no problem. The issue here is the Barcelona issue. It's because his dream is to go to Barcelona. That Atletico would never sell him to Barcelona unless that release clause, as they mentioned in their post, is triggered. There's no way Barcelona can pay. I mean, they can't even pay£150 million anywhere for Julen Alvarez, let alone£500 million. Nobody will ever pay that release clause regardless. However, However, I think if a foreign club like a PSG or like an Arsenal find a way of making an attractive proposition to Atleti and that Julian is happy to go there, then I think that could happen, although it would be a long saga through the summer.
15:42But the Julian to Barcelona is impossible right now. One, because Barca don't have enough money. And two, because Atletico, if they don't want to sell him to them unless they trigger the release clause, it won't happen. Frank, what do you make of the whole situation? I would say goodbye Julian because I think there is no way they can keep him if he wants to go and we hear that every year we had Isaac last season now we have Alvarez but we had I think Griezmann like some years ago for the same kind of transfer from Atletico to Barcelona if a player wants to go you have to find a way to let him go and to find the right amount of time money sorry to allow him to sign for another club because he doesn't want to play for you anymore.
16:27It's sad because he has a contract, but it is what it is. And we are in a world of human beings, and if a human being doesn't want to play anymore for your club, you better sell him because he's not going to give you the 100 % that you're expecting. And Julian Alvarez has been absolutely fantastic for Atletico, but that's the end of the story for me. All right. Well, thanks so much, Jules, for that update. We'll catch up with you another time. And for more talk about Julian Alvarez, Alex Kirkland joined us on the show. last night for more info on the whole saga.
17:01Time for a quick break. Now, we already talked about Messi, but Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe also found the back of the net, not once, but twice. We're talking them next.

19:01Let's have a look at the group standings for France and Norway's group. There you see both France and Norway at the top level on points as they have gotten two wins from two, which makes the next game where they both will face each other All the more interesting, especially because it will be quite the battle between two amazing goal scorers in Erling Haaland for Norway and Kylian Mbappe for France. But let's start off with Norway's game against Senegal. Norway winning that one 3-2 in the end. But Erling Haaland, two goals on the night. Nadim, was there ever a doubt that he was not going to just absolutely enjoy playing at this level?
19:40Yeah, I love it. I love it for him. You know, somebody who just loves the game of football, has got like this sort of amateurish sort of spirit to it. And for him to be playing at World Cup is one thing. For him to be playing for Norway is another. And to be doing it in this manner, it's incredible. I think we've seen how good a goal scorer he's been at club level, but he's never really had the chance to operate at this sort of stage. Boy, does he love it. You know, it really suits him in this Norway side as well. Some people have them as dark horses, and I can I can see it in some ways. And obviously not perfect.
20:07But these are the scenes that you love to see so many, so many Norwegians traveled over to the US, so many norwegians desperate to get involved in the role and they're all in they're all in myself you know like we're so i was drawing on my couch i mean they'll go i mean look at this how do you make sense of this absolutely offensive numbers there yeah it's ridiculous and again it's playing for norway in the european section so it's not as if every game is going to be a rollover this guy has been on form for the longest time for them and he could not be happier right now ali when you see a striker like this who's obviously enjoying himself feels the pride of playing on the world's biggest stage for his country but also he's just so big so physical has pace how do you defend someone like that yeah you you just have to do your best honestly you have to keep your head on the swivel make sure you get touched tight at times you can get touched tight and affect the play as best you can whether that be him or the ball um it reminds me of going against you know the type of player who is so strong and physical like an abby womback a forward who is just in in the best places at all times to be able to finish.
21:10She was the best goal scorer for us in the United States, but also overall. So it reminds me of that and having to go up against somebody. But what I have respect for him is that he's wearing his mother's maiden name on the back of his jersey representing Norway. And that's something that I think is unbelievable. And I'm so happy to see that. Yeah, without question, one of the best number nines. And in terms of figuring out how to try and stop him, as is the case with most nines, it's about the service. And I think if we're going to be honest, The Senegal team that we've seen in his last two games hasn't been the Senegal team that was playing in AFCON not too long ago.
21:42No, mistakes galore. England a year ago, and there are reasons for that, you know, things that go beyond stuff just on the field right now. But he will take advantage of any opportunity like that. So you'd like to think that going forward, there would be people who would set up in a different way to try and defend against him and would be sort of more clinical with their defending. Well, you give Erling Haaland a chance and, you know, there's a very good opportunity that's going to go into the back of your net. Yeah, Frankie, when we look at, of course, Erling Haaland's numbers, it's going to take a long time before he can catch the likes of Messi and Mbappe in terms of World Cup goals on a whole.
22:12But at least for the race for the Golden Boot, he's very much entered the chat. Exactly. He's in the race and good for him and good for Norway. And he doesn't touch many, many balls, but he's always in a good spot. and when he gets them, he's very effective and he's a great player. I mean, how do you play against him? I was listening to Ali and Edom. It's impossible unless you bribe him, but you can't even bribe him. He's so rich now, so you can't even find any solution. Maybe he offers some flowers. Maybe he's going to be touched by the flowers. I don't know how. The guy is so strong, so powerful.
22:54He has the flair on top of it. He knows exactly where to stand to get the ball and to be in the right position to score a goal. The guy is a cyborg. We talked about the genius of Messi. We talked about the pace of Mbappe. Now we talk about the power of the cyborg. Those guys are impossible to catch, impossible to deal with, and it's why they are fighting for the top scorer of the World Cup. They're great. They're simply great. Yeah, the great race is on indeed. So let's talk about Kylian Mbappe because I know Jules wants to go there. Jules is like, enough Erling Haaland. Let's talk about my boy, Kylian Mbappe.
23:33You were at the game last night, France winning 3-0 over Iraq. We know there was a rain delay. We'll talk about that in a bit, Jules. But let's focus definitely on Mbappe just once again doing what we expect him to do. Yeah, it was the Mbappe show again, like we saw in the first game against Senegal on his 100th cup. So a very special evening. For him and for his family, it's a proper milestone to reach 100 caps for you, 100 games for your country. He's only the 10th in French football history to get over the line of 100 caps, so it was very special. And as always, as we've been saying before the tournament, since the tournament has started, the World Cup just starts something in him.
24:13You know, he's been outstanding in the three World Cups that he's played, 16 goals in 16 games now. It's a goal per game ratio, it's incredible at this level. And the way he led the team yesterday, again, with how difficult it was with the rain and the interruption for such a long time, I thought was brilliant. And he's a great captain. He's in great form right now, which is interesting to look at. Because obviously he had an up and down season with Real Madrid individually and collectively. So he seemed to be on a mission in this World Cup. He does seem to be on a mission. And I think defenders everywhere and countries everywhere will be slightly afraid to hear that, Frank.
24:50Oh yes, yes, be ready if you can, because you're not going to be ready. The guy is impossible to catch and we were talking about Messi breaking records, but the guy is just behind and he is only 27. He is already a World Cup winner. He already scored so many goals. He is at the same level than Closer. He's two goals behind Messi and he's only 27 he's gonna play maybe one or two other World Cup so he's gonna beat Messi for sure for sure Messi will won't last long and that's crazy when you see when you have to say that but Mbappe is a killer in front of the goal he's only think about that and and when he's on his top form is is unbeatable.
25:35Nadim who you taking Mbappe or Haaland? Who's better? putting you on the spot. Who's better? Yeah. Like the better footballer, better what? Goal scorer, footballer, just who you taking? I mean, it's probably going to be Mbappe, but considering our support of Man City, you know, it's only ever Erling Haaland, isn't it? Oh, that's why, that's why Natum is not a trusted journalist. That's why I'm loyal. That's why he's loyal. Loyalty is dead. That's what they say. Ali, what about you? Who would you be taking? Mbappe, 1000%. The way that he's also built this relationship with Olise over the years, just playing at this level.

26:11And the quality that he has in the distribution, that entry pass to allow him to, you know, also score some goals has been brilliant. So I love watching that. He's unbelievable. He has pace. He's strong. He's physical. A knack for goal. I mean, what more do you want? Ali's right. I mean, Mbappe aside, I love me some Kili Kili, but Olise, what an absolute show. Are you not entertained? All right. Well, one thing we weren't really entertained with was the storm that we saw, Jules. There was a rain delay. We understand that, of course, there were thunderstorms and lightning, so that's why the game had to be halted.
26:46Just talk to us about what it was like and how weird it was for you to experience because, of course, you live in England and there's a lot of rain in England, but a rain delay quite like this in the middle of a game, it's interesting, isn't it? Yeah, I've never experienced anything like that. Before, I was in Ukraine in 2012 for the Euros when France played Ukraine at the Donbass Arena there was a lot of rain and the game was stopped after five minutes and suspended for an hour and then they finished it on a waterlogged pitch. But two hours and ten minutes like yesterday, never before. I mean, we knew there were high risk of those thunderstorms coming, but what really amazed me, and again, I'm maybe really naive and I've never really experienced it, is how quickly things change because it looked like actually things were brightened up and that getting close to half time that we were fine actually and we would avoid the thunderstorm.
27:37And then suddenly the FIFA people were texting us saying, like, I have time. You need to go and find shelter because this is going to be dangerous. And we're like, really? And the rain had started falling, but it was just the rain, like you said, Alex, that we see in the UK, for example, or anywhere else. But it changed so quickly. And for the players, it's difficult because half an hour you can manage, even an hour you can probably manage. Two hours and 10 minutes, it's a very long time. They played a bit of cards. At least it was big dressing room over there. So you have the bikes, you can do a bit of cycling, you can play with the ball, you can do kippee-uppies, you can do the two-touches game, all that kind of stuff, great.
28:13But after 45 minutes already, you've had enough. So it was not easy, and credit to the two teams, really, because I thought the second half could have suffered from that long break in terms of quality. And the pitch as well, because there were a lot of paddles everywhere and paddles and things like that. But actually, it was still good quality second half. Ali, you've experienced something like this before, have you? this long? How hard is it for the players to kind of just keep in that moment? Yeah, it is difficult. I played in Orlando in the middle of hurricane season and, you know, lightning consistently.
28:43So it's really tough to stay mentally in it, right? Then you go and you sit after warming up and activating, especially after, you know, you already start the game. So it is difficult to kind of stay mentally in it. But then it's just keeping your legs warm. And honestly, you're basically staring at each other in the locker room, right? And trying to you know stay ready for for the next part of the game but um you just have to continue to talk about what you know you're you're going to fix in order to get back out there and get 100 percent back to where you were so it's tough but you know they're professionals this is a business you got to show up and you got to show out when when you have the the um opportunity to and and i know that they can handle it just like we saw last night yeah natum took the time during that rain delay to re-watch the usa up against australia he was such a fan of that game by force by force He was entertained either way.

32:02Well, after a disappointing result in their opening game, Portugal will be bowing into action later today. They will be going up against Uzbekistan. And of course, there's a lot of talk about Cristiano Ronaldo and whether or not he can finally come to the party, as many expect him to be that talisman for Portugal. But before we get into Super Cristiano Ronaldo talk on the pitch, Jules, there's been a lot of talk about tension and drama in the dressing room. So tell us more about what's being said. Yeah, it's a bit everywhere, Alexis. I mean, there are a lot of things written in the Portuguese media or said in the Portuguese media about those tensions within the dressing room around Cristiano Ronaldo.
32:45We saw Cristiano himself putting some cryptic posts out there, his sister getting involved as well. We saw Joao Neves and Bruno Fanonj, both of them getting a lot of abuse on their social media. I mean, for Joao Neves, just basically saying that they know how much Cristiano has done for Portuguese football and for football in general, to be fair. But in this walk, they were all fighting for the same thing and all being the same kind of players. And Cristiano fans clearly didn't like that. Bruno got a lot of stick in a similar way. We saw Francisco Concecao, who did really nothing wrong the other day around Cristiano and got a similar abuse.
33:21So it feels like there's a very heavy environment around the national team. We're not sure about Roberto Martinez's future, for example. At the moment, he seems to be leaving Portugal at the end of the World Cup, probably to go to Al Nasser, which is the club where Cristiano Ronaldo plays. So there's a lot of things going on. And it's really not ideal when you're preparing for such a big game because they need to win against Uzbekistan. not just to win. They need to play well. They need Cristiano to do well as well. And that's a lot of things that you need to get right for this game. Yeah, I think when we saw the fixtures getting into this World Cup, Portugal against Uzbekistan, we didn't think we'd be calling it a big must-win game for Portugal.
33:57But that's exactly the state of affairs. So for this one now, Nadam, if you're Roberto Martinez, do you start Cristiano? Absolutely start him, yeah. I still think he's the best forward and the best finisher that they have in that side. And I think the biggest issue from the first game, obviously Cristiano didn't play as well as he could have done. but who did for that Portugal side? I think it was more so issues in terms of their approach, say the lineup selection and so on. So I think going into the second game, I think you'll probably learn from those lessons because they will face a tough test against Uzbekistan.
34:24Again, which they should be winning again. But again, it's a side that also plays in a similar style to Diakongo. I think Diakongo played with the back three, Uzbekistan played with the back three. I think Roberto Martinez didn't set his team up correctly to play against that type of lineup. So yeah, I'm backing him to play, backing him to score. it's just I don't know it's just it just feels too easy to just go against him right now because he's because Portugal haven't had a great game and I think also the stories that we're hearing there about say the attacks against Conte Sao and Jean Neves and Fernandes the problem with like Ronaldo and Messi and people like this they've got tons of fans but some of those are like actual crazy fanatic types you're talking about me right not you on this occasion no and some of these like fanatic types they don't even like they're not even from Portugal they don't support Portugal It's just all-out support for an individual.
35:10So they never really take anything. So me again. So, yeah. It's like Joanne's conversation about how we're all pulling in the same direction, like nobody's bigger than anyone else. That's like good speak. That's good football speak. But if you're a fanatic, it's like, how dare you not discuss my king in the correct manner, which is a shame, really. It's a shame indeed. I wonder who would ever say such a thing. But, Frank, what about you? Would you start Cristiano today as well? Yes, of course. Of course, I mean, it's one game. Come on, guys. You know, chill out. It's only one game. Somebody say something.
35:43Now you have the family, you have the girlfriend, you have the sister, you have the fanatic fans, you know. Joe Nevers didn't say anything bad towards Ronaldo. He wanted to say that he was part of them, that he was with them, and that nothing was said badly about Ronaldo because players, they know they can't say anything against him. They know that he's a real star, he's the peak of the national team, and he has to play against Uzbekistan. He has to score goals, Portugal has to win, and to bring the confidence back and the count around the national team, it's obvious and compulsory for me that Ronaldo has to play, and he deserves to play.
36:25I mean, they didn't have a good game. One game, come on, take it easy. That's all right. Jules, your eyes kind of went big and looked a bit surprised when both Nadam and Frank so adamantly said, of course they would start Cristiano Ronaldo. Do you not agree with them? It's not that. Frank says it's one game. It's not one game. And that's the problem here. That is the problem. Ronaldo was poor two years ago at the Euros. Didn't score a single goal. Missed penalties. Didn't even... It's not just that he was not good. It didn't look good. Full stop. The World Cup four years ago, three and a half years ago in Qatar, we were there.
36:58He scored one goal on the penalty. So there's no goals in open play for two big tournaments now. and the problem is not this one game against Congo because you could you could have one bad game it happens to everybody even the goats like Cristiano and Messi the problem is it's been going on for a long time and okay he's calling the qualifiers good for him I mean Nedam Anuha was calling qualifiers for Portugal against Leipzig and things like that he might even take he might even take a penalty and score that penalty who knows eh so it's not the one game and that's the problem here and sure he's going to start against Uzbekistan Roberto Martinez right now is not going to take that decision to bench Cristiano.
37:35This is not who he is as a coach. This is not what he wants to do. He should have done it when he took over after Qatar, you know, and he didn't. And now it's too late. You can't bench. I don't think he will bench Cristiano like Fernando Santos did in Qatar. But I think the debate is right to be there. Would it be better with, I don't know, Joel Felix as a nine or Rafael Léo as a nine or Gonzalo Ramos as a nine? You've got other options. The problem is you've never tried the other options. So now you're stuck in like, well, it has to be Cristiano. One, because it's Cristiano. OK, no problem. But two, because we don't really know what plan B is because we never tried a plan B.
38:07Alec, you played in teams, especially with the U.S. women's national team, where you're kind of still hanging on to the magic from some of your aging superstars. And you're hoping that lightning will consistently strike in the same place twice. But would you start Cristiano Ronaldo? Yeah, I would. I would start Cristiano Ronaldo. I think it has a lot to do with also the identity of the team and maybe the personnel. And I think there were a lot of individual play in that game rather than a collective team effort. And I feel like if that can shift a little bit, then you might see a different Portugal today.
38:38But I don't think just taking out Cristiano Ronaldo is going to solve all of the issues. And automatically Portugal is going to be playing magnificent and scoring all these goals. So I think they keep him in and they have to figure out what the identity of the team is and how to share the ball collectively. I think a lot better than they shown in the last game. They're making the same runs. they're not really having any quality service into the box, and the shots were nowhere near really on target. So I think those are more of the issue right now than just one player. All right, we're going to take Ali's word for it because she's the boss.
39:11All right, Frank LeBeouf, Julianne Laurent, thank you so much, guys, for joining us. We will catch up with you another time. And don't forget to check us out over on YouTube for the FC live stream right after Portugal face Uzbekistan. 40:48Back on ESPN FC, let's have a look at England's group standings. They started things off with a nice 4-2 win over Croatia. That has them sitting pretty at the top. But Ghana also were able to get a win, and they go up against the Ghanaians today. Speaking of Ghana, their talisman, Antoine Semenyo, he's had a complicated journey from failing trials at academies to then even playing non-league football. and now he will be going up against the country he was born in as he suits up for the Black Stars against England. For more on that, here's Anscape's Bill Roden.
41:25Adonis Silva. Harland. Plenty and support. Oh, that's beautiful from Antoine Semenyo. In a very short time, Antoine Semenyo has gone from a striker trying to prove he belongs to Premier League star Ximeno! FA Cup champion and one of the faces of Ghana's World Cup host. But as Ghana and England prepare to meet in the World Cup, the decision to represent the Black Stars was made long before Manchester. I wasn't really in the ranks for England. Being a late bloomer, I didn't really have any expectation to. And to be honest, I didn't see myself getting to this point. You obviously dream big, but I didn't know it was going to be my reality.
42:09So, yeah, when Ghana came in, I just said, yeah, like, there's no way I'm saying no to this. Antoine Semenya was born in London shortly after his parents immigrated to the UK from Africa. But Ghana was never far away. Ghana meant everything, to be honest. My family, mom and dad, brother, we used to watch Ghana daily. We used to go to Ghana. There was just so much love. When you mention Ghana, it's just love. Everything was just, like, football-related. Everyone loves football in Ghana. Even just representing the nation, it means so much. I think it's a dream come true. My dad always used to talk about representing Ghana as a kid, and to say that I'm doing it now just means everything.
42:51Ghana first made the call four years ago, and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar felt like an arrival. Since then, everything in Antoine's life has accelerated. Semenyo! Pure power! I think just going to that World Cup in 2022 was one thing and then everything's just sped up from that point onwards and at Bournemouth. Semenyo to finish it! Had a breakthrough season there. Antoine Semenyo makes the breakthrough for Bournemouth. And then just kept on going and then obviously my man's seat, you know, so yeah, a lot's happened so quick and I've just had to adjust. Some would frame England vs Ghana as the country where he was born against the country he chose.
43:37But Semenyo does not frame it as conflict. He frames it as commitment. Like my friends are kind of split. Some are supporting England, some are supporting Ghana. Obviously being born there, it's quite a lot. But yeah, I mean, it's a game at the end of the day. And I'm representing Ghana. I've committed to them. So it's a game for me. I want to win. and coming up against obviously teammates and stuff is going to be something. But yeah, I'm looking forward to it. Well, he's capped a stellar season with a beautiful, impudent cup final goal. And Sominio can only imagine what a similar game winner against England might do.
44:16God, I think the Ghana fans might take over America if that's the case. Yeah, it would be amazing. I mean, just, yeah, scoring against England would be great for sure. I mean, if that's a winning goal, it's even better but I want to make history I'm gonna score as many goals as I can and I love the nation I'll do anything for the nation where my heart must leave and I'll work as hard as I can to make sure there's success in Ghana
44:46well he will definitely have to contend with a familiar sound as the England fans have descended upon Boston I'm not I'm surprised to see there's enough beer for them to get after Scotland had their way with Boston. Scotland, of course, off to Florida now. But England fans definitely full of song, wondering if it will be coming home. And someone who has been asking that for a long, long time is one of the biggest England fans we know, of course, our Adrian Healy. Adrian, what's the vibe like out there in Boston? Can you do better than the Scots? And is it coming home? Well, those are all the questions, Alexis.
45:24good morning to you all. I can't stay away from this, can't stay away from this city of Boston. As Paul Revere once said, the British are coming. And after 10 days of the Scots of the Tartan army here, it's the turn of the English. You know, there was some overlap between the two tribes over the weekend and a lot of unity and harmony were displayed. The Scots had two clear messages, two clear messages for the English though. One, good luck trying to out drink us. And two, please don't remove any of those orange traffic cones we left on top of statues so on that first point on that first point the English have their work cut out because roughly about 14 ,000 expected in the city as opposed to 50 ,000 for the Scots but they've set about their task with a purpose a determination and a relish that I think even Thomas Tuchel would approve of they've been giving it a good go here in Boston and we're on our way it's been the dominant song but you all saw or Wonderwall being performed by the players and the fans together down in Dallas.
46:26And that seems to have taken over here. In fact, last night at one of the bars, former English player David Bentley got up on a bar top and led the rousing chorus of Wonderwall to everyone's delight. He's probably a player that Nedden played with, I imagine. The former Spurs and England man. And that's not actually him, but there was a photo of him up on the bar and the English fans have been loving it. Real, real unity here amongst the fan group. Need him. Hello. Hey. Hey. If that's David, yeah, I did play with David. If that was him with the flat cap on, that's the way he's been for the last 10 years.
47:07And what I liked with David is he actually retired very early because he wanted to do other things, but he still had the honour of representing his country. He was really good as a player as well. It was good to see that he's still supporting the England side. England-Ghana though, it's gonna be a good one. You know, I'll be honest with you, so I was born in Nigeria, I played for England, and you don't really know about where your allegiances truly lie until they play against each other. And I think England have done that maybe twice in my lifetime. And I swear I've been tested, like, watching that game.
47:35And I think for Antoine and lots of other people in England, you know, who have that sort of dual nationality type situation, I promise you when the game starts, you will realize very quickly which team you're rooting for. but it might not be what you expect. All right, well, Eddie, you told us about all the stuff off the pitch. On the pitch now, what are you expecting from this matchup against Ghana, especially with the talisman that they have? Antoine Semenya, who's coming off of at least a good time with Manchester City recently. Yeah, and they're likely to have Thomas Partey back in the mix as well, so it could be a little Arsenal reunion against Declan Rice there.
48:09But I tell you what, listening to Thomas Tuchel's press conference yesterday, he's expecting a very different sort of game. Yeah, talking about England having a lot more of the ball today at Boston Stadium against Ghana. Ghana, a team that like to counterattack with speed and purpose. But he, of course, will be looking for an improved performance from the defense. What remains to be seen is, is he going to change any of the starting 11? There's plenty of thought out there that he might not. Perhaps Marcus Rashford, perhaps Mark Gaye. But those may be the only two changes and maybe neither of those either.
48:43that. Adrienne Healy, thank you so much for joining us. Go get yourself a cold one. And by that, I mean a cold iced coffee because you are a professional. All right. Well, make sure to join us tonight on ESPN FC. We will be looking back at all the day's play midnight Eastern time on ESPN2.
49:02Well, we just cannot stay away from the Scotland fans. And now they got the factor 70 out and they've headed to South Beach. We'll look at them next.
49:15ESPN FC is brought to you by Liberty Mutual Insurance. Only pay for what you need. Right, here's what's coming up at the FIFA World Cup today. Portugal, Uzbekistan, that's the game we were talking about to see if Cristiano Ronaldo can finally find the back of the net. Then England up against Ghana. Panama face Croatia. And then Colombia against the Democratic Republic of Congo is the later kickoff. Now it's time to get some predictions from our experts and myself, of course, just here for the vibes. Let's start off with the one we did speak so much about, Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo up against Uzbekistan in now what we're calling a must-win game for the Portuguese.
50:00Nadam? Hello. I'm going to go over this way. Oh, that was a very... That was a very Linga drag, I would say. I'm going to go over this way. I think Ronaldo's going to score to that. Oh, Nadam says it first. Cristiano Ronaldo to score. I'm also going with Portugal today, so I'm with Nadam definitely here. I want Portugal to do well, and I want Ronaldo to do well and score a goal and get back to that confident way. My bracket wants them to do well as well. Yeah, my bracket definitely wants Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal to do very well, so I'm going to go with them next. Next one now. Colombia against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
50:38So, Natum, you can't go for Congo, can you? Who says? Oh, you're going for a draw. I'm going to go for a draw, yeah. I think, obviously, Colombia are very good, but I like the Congo as well. And I know they knocked Nigeria out. I was going to say, Natum. Well, that shows how good a team they are. Yeah, that's true. Well, they knocked Jamaica out as well. But I'm going to go for Colombia on this one. Ali, what about you? Yes, Colombia for me as well. All right. Tierra querida. England against Ghana. There are a lot of Nigerians watching me here. There's no right answer. There's no right answer.
51:12There's no right answer. But the realistic one is this one. But what would your heart rather see? England again. I have left. Don't worry about that. I'm going to go for England. Do you know what? I'm going to try to get some Ghanaian Jollof. And I'm going to go for a draw in this one. Nigeria is better. Is it? You see? That's the rivalry right there. Finally, Panama up against Croatia. Can Croatia bounce back? They must win for them. So I'm going Croatia. Yeah, I'm going to do Croatia as well. All right. Well, do you know what? I'm sorry to our Congo Cav brothers, but I think I'm going to go for Croatia on this one.
51:46Long live Luka Modric. I want to see him at least get out to the group. Come on now. Come on now. Right? Yeah, I think so. Long live the 40-year-olds. Yeah, long live the 40-year-olds. Nate, I'm turning 40 this year if you haven't noticed. All right. Well, one thing that we have been absolutely loving about this World Cup has been the mighty Tartan army. And if you look down in South Beach now, you will see a lot, a lot of sunburns going out there. But Scotland and the Tartan Army and their cones have descended upon South Beach. And look at that. They managed to take in some baseball. Absolutely love it.
52:23All right, that's going to do it for this edition of ESPN FC. Make sure to join us again tonight for more World Cup talk.
52:35We'll be right back.
