0:31Shaka Hislop:Welcome to the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Dan Thomas, joined by Craig Burley and Stevie Nicker. We all kick things off at Anfield. Liverpool taking on Manchester City. First half wasn't the best in this game, to be honest. Haaland had an early chance, City had the better of it. One talking point, maybe Salah could have had a penalty with a challenge from Silva.
0:51Alejandro Moreno:I'm OK with the referee's decision.
0:53Shaka Hislop:Liverpool better in the second half. In fact, Slot felt that maybe Salah should have earned a red card against Gahy. He was brought down just outside the box. Was he denying a goal-scoring opportunity, Stevie? 100%. It was just a yellow card that was given. Liverpool, though, would take the lead in some style. An exceptional free kick from Solveshoy would make it 1-0. But then City would get the equaliser ten minutes later. Harland in the silver to make it 1-1. and then Alisson comes out, commits the foul, draws the penalty and Manchester City have the chance to take a 2-1 lead. A chance that's taken by Erling Haaland to make it 2-1 and then it was 3-1.
1:35Shaka Hislop:However, the goal would be chalked off. Alisson was at one end trying to get the equaliser. Cherki would play it from the halfway line into an open goal. Haaland and Slogerslai would be running towards the ball. Slogerslai pulls Haaland and then Haaland pulls Slogerslai. The ball goes in the back of the net. The referee looks at VAR. But then the foul is given against Sobislai. It is a red card for the Hungarian. Liverpool down to 10 men. The goal chalked off. Manchester City win the game by two goals to one. Right, for more, let's welcome in, shall we, Frank Leboeuf. We'll go to Frank in a moment.
2:08Frank Leboeuf:There's not often a man, this man comes in with a still on his phone.
2:13Shaka Hislop:Yes, that was for the last year that it had been a red card. But I don't want to talk about incidents overall. in general, how would you sum up this game?
2:22Frank Leboeuf:I thought Liverpool were excellent in the second half, for the most part. I think the goal, Bernardo Silva goal, you saw the issues with playing a midfielder at right back because he's not got the instincts to step out and he plays them onside. But that apart, I thought they played some great stuff. I think we talked about City second-half performances on Friday. They hadn't scored a goal in the second half of a match this year, this calendar year up until today, they just seemed to switch off and they couldn't handle Liverpool. But once again, they couldn't keep a clean sheet. City bossed the first half without creating...
2:59Frank Leboeuf:They created that chance for Haaland early on, but that was it. And once again, they showed their frailties, but somehow managed to grind out three points, which keeps it alive, I suppose, in some sense, but not really the way they're playing. They're not going to convince anybody that they can put a title charge on the way they're playing. But numerically, I suppose they're still in it. But Liverpool must be kicking themselves because they had this game, they were in total control, and then they were not.
3:27Shaka Hislop:It was just the chance. It just didn't take those chances. Florian Verts obviously had a good opportunity after the Eketiki backheel. We mentioned, of course, the Eketiki header that went wide. Liverpool better in the second half, but you've got to get it done.
3:40Alejandro Moreno:Yeah, to be honest, I'd like to start in the first half. Sure. I've never seen a Liverpool side as negative and sitting on the edge of the box at Anfield against anybody. I mean, that's what they did. They took no part in the game. So it could only get better. And the fact that it was kicking into the cup, then we saw what they're capable of. But then again, listen, it's bad enough, the Mo Salah thing. Should have been a red card, in my opinion. But I think what made me the angriest of all was the way, after they scored, after Slobber's Life scores, they've got the momentum, they've got City by the throat, they're going to sit on top of the box again.
4:22Alejandro Moreno:They completely just stood off. Is that Slott's doing? The first half, 100%, is Slott's doing. I think the fact that Liverpool have lost so many goals this season, the way they have, players automatically take a step back. But then that's when the manager, I guess, has to step in and say, get yourself up. But that was the biggest thing at Anoumiro. You go ahead, the game's there for you, and you take a step back and you sit on the top of your box and then it falls apart. Is that fair, Frank?
4:57Dan Thomas:It is fair. And I don't get it. I mean, really, it was a big surprise because Craig eluded it. We know that Manchester City doesn't do much things in second half and it's been that for a long time. And when Subosay called, I said, OK, game over, because we didn't see much from City. And Liverpool got it away and didn't do what they had to do. But we have to talk also about the two centre-backs, you know, and the way they work together. I mean, on the first goal, of course, on Silva, where I don't know who's going out and don't work together or don't work. You know, they don't talk to each other.
5:35Dan Thomas:I don't know how they work. It's like they don't know each other anymore, Van Dijk and Konate. and on the second goal, of course, it's another thing. But really, I'm concerned about Liverpool. I'm concerned about the fact that the players that they were there last year are not getting back to even 20 % of what they've been. And that's annoying and worrying for me. Only Slobodzai today, again, and Ike-Tike at some point, we're good. But the others, I'm very concerned. and for City, that was magical, really. Coming from nowhere, those two goals. Coming from nowhere.
6:14Shaka Hislop:Let's talk about the incidents. If you wouldn't mind, can we start with the last incident? Because that's what everyone was talking about, which I thought was quite interesting. Because by the letter of the law, they did everything right. Yet people are coming out. Even our own Mark Ogden has come out and said, ridiculous foul decision, just let the goal stand. Two fouls and the ball ends up in the back of the net.
6:35Frank Leboeuf:A bunch of journalists in the UK, not just Augie. people that I thought would have a lot more sense. Now, at that point, does Haaland go and put it in without fouling? It's fine. So that's the red card defence. If there's not another offence, which there was, now he fouls him here, so the goal can't stand. The goal cannot stand. And for those that say, when I was watching it, I said, he's got to pull that back for the red card on Sabah's line, give a free kick, because you can't foul somebody that's potentially going to clear the ball. And the other point is for those that say, this is the spirit of the game and the VAR and whatnot, you can't just give a goal because at that point the game was 2-1.
7:20Frank Leboeuf:And even if there was 15 or 20 seconds left, which there was, had Ryan Cherky, who blasted the ball over the bar with a free kick, had he turned around with a free kick and tried to play Saham Smart back the way and given it away, within five or ten seconds, Liverpool could have scored an equaliser. So you can't just go, oh, I'll allow the goal because that's the spirit of the game, when the game technically was still in the balance. So they were absolutely spot on. And I just don't understand the killing of the game. And they're blaming VAR for this, most people. Pep and Slott both said the goal should have stood.
7:55Frank Leboeuf:Just let it go.
7:57Alejandro Moreno:I initially did. But his nibs here just convinced me. Because he's right. The bit I didn't think about that he said. if there's 10 seconds left you can still score a goal I was absolutely 100 % going to come out with the spirit of the game you know, referees, they're too busy refereeing from a book you know, the best thing to do would have been just to leave the goal because the game was over and then just that little line, he said when there's 10 seconds left you can score a goal, so I'm sorry, I'm with you now
8:33Frank Leboeuf:Stevie, they were looking at what to do, Cherky. They were going to play the ball in the corner, try and keep it. Then he blasted it over the bar. The referee did not blow at that point. He allowed Alisson to take the goal kick and launch it up the field. Set he cleared it, and only at that point did he blow. Had he lumped it up the field, Alisson had been flicked on and somebody had rocked it in the back of the net. The game's 2-2. So you cannot just turn up and say, ah, listen, there was a foul there, and then there was another foul, so two wrongs. I don't make a... Oh, let the goal stand. No.
9:05Frank Leboeuf:No, no, no, you can't because clearly Haaland fouls the boys lie. So they have to go back. This is ludicrous just to say, particularly when a game is still not over. Oh, let's spirit the game. Just there's two fouls, one for each. Let the goal go in. Frank, you're romantic.
9:23Shaka Hislop:Would you not like to have seen this goal stunned?
9:25Dan Thomas:No, not at all. There are rules in football and it's not because a foul follows another foul that it can sell the first foul. That doesn't make any sense. You have to be, we're not playing football in the street, down the street. There are rules and you have to accept that. And it was a clear mistake from Slobodzai because he couldn't carry on with the pace of Alan. And therefore, it's only fair that the goal is cancelled, that there is a red card and there is a free kick. I'm 100 % with the guys and well done the refs. You know, that's what he had to be. And it was, Well said.
10:03Frank Leboeuf:He would have ignored the Sabozlai pool had nothing else gone on. Yeah, absolutely. He would just have ignored it. And it would have been like, that's fine. Because the Haaland pool then... It's not had a material impact in the game had the second offence not taken place. And again, the crux of the matter is the game was not dead at that point.
10:24Alejandro Moreno:Technically, with 15-26. You're 100 % right. But I think all of those things that we're talking about that people have said were straight after the game. And I can assure you, I had to do digital. I was angry. And I had all kinds of stuff going through my head. Common themes. And that's when I came out with it. Well, they should have cancelled each file out, blah, blah, blah. Do you want to go back and do it again? But now that the dust has settled. It's like your post-match press conference. Well, it is. Edit that bit on YouTube. things you see things straight after the game that had you been given half an earth or an early countdown and then think about it rationally then you would
11:04Shaka Hislop:see a different thing well slot said in the press conference afterwards look if you're going to send slobby sly off for the red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity then gay should have been sent off as well for doing the same on Salah earlier in the game where do you stand on this Stevie is this a red card
11:19Alejandro Moreno:I don't understand how it's not giving a red card. You know, and the best thing about it, the best thing about it is, is it's really clear. You know, there's no interpretation here. If you deny somebody a goal scoring opportunity, then it's a red card. And there's no way that Diaz is getting over there. And there's no way that Salah's not getting on the end of that. So that's going to be a one-on-one with a goalkeeper, with Donnarumma. That, in my book, that reads, a goal scoring opportunity. So it has to be a red. There's not one argument you can give me that will tell me to change my mind. Frank?
11:59Dan Thomas:I totally agree with Stevie, but I think what the referee just saw is that Diaz maybe had an opportunity to disturb Salah. I think the only reason why they didn't put the red card on Gay, because that was a fair one, deserved one and there was nothing to complain about and I agree with you I don't think Diaz could have interfered it was too late it was too far away maybe but I think the referee in the booth they thought that he was capable of going there and again disturb Salah to avoid the goal Don't blame the referee Craig Boston here he's got a hundred things
12:38Frank Leboeuf:to think of Stevie was blaming him when he called me up I promise Absolutely yeah
12:42Alejandro Moreno:You've got to look at the VAR to help him out but he's the referee he's in charge right he should be going and looking at that himself he's the guy who makes the decision he should be the one who makes the final decision
12:53Frank Leboeuf:yes but that's not up to him to go and look at it he's waiting for the instruction to go and look at it from the VAR and I know what they'll say and I agree with you the more you look at it it's 100 % likely that Mo Salah's going to get a strike away what they'll try and say is is the angle was such that it wasn't a clear goal scoring and they'll come up with something like that. It's a unique story. But I do think, on reflection, it looks like that should have been a red. But that's where the VAR, and that's the same thing with the Dallot Challenge in Doku the other week. Slightly different scenario, but the referee should have been allowed to go and check that at the monitor.
13:35Frank Leboeuf:Craig Pawson should have been allowed to have 30 seconds to go and make his own decision whether he thought Diaz was going to get across and get there first. But he wasn't allowed to do that. So effectively, too often we're having the game refereed from the VAR booth back in London, rather than the official who's thinking about a free kick, who's thinking, was it outside the box? Where did the pull stop? He's looking at all that. He's not looking. Don't forget when he's refereeing the game here. He's got his eyes on that so intensely. He's not looking at Diaz. So he's not seen Diaz. Really, he's not.
14:10Frank Leboeuf:Because he's looking at a shirt pull. He's looking at the line. He needs the guy in London to say to him, go and have a look at this and make an informed decision.
14:20Shaka Hislop:Do you want to see Stevie's research going into the show today? This is what he sent the producer. That was it. Look at that picture.
14:27Alejandro Moreno:There's a reason why, because when I called you... How many times did it take you to get this picture? Why is there not a circle around anybody? I was like a dog with a bone. Took me once. Don't worry about it. Because I had you in my head. Who froze it? And who screenshotted it? I did it all myself. I told you, Doug got a bone. No, because I phoned him up straight away and then he started doing as usual. He started trying to wind me up, right? So I called Pete and I said, right, I'm going to send you this. He hung up on me. I said, I'm going to send you this because there's a chance he's going to start his nonsense.
15:01Alejandro Moreno:And if he does, I said, Pete, make sure you get it up on the screen. So there you go. Is the Salah one worth a discussion from the first half? I agree If it's given If it's given You don't have a problem with it And if it's not given I don't have a problem with it either There's no question There's a touch But there's not enough It's not a touch Well the ball's within playing distance
15:24Frank Leboeuf:Right I think It is And he's put the hand on the shoulder Now This is very subjective He's not pulling them No I'm Listen I'm kind of 60 for this remaining the way it was and 40, but what I'm saying is it's certainly something you're not just turning a blind eye to and going oh that's ridiculous, that's a dive
15:48Alejandro Moreno:So the easiest way to do it if you put your hands on somebody you're asking the referee to make a decision and that's what you as a defender, the last thing you want to do is relying on the referee making the right decision for you Frank?
16:05Dan Thomas:For me, it's hard to say because it's not clear. What we see on the video, on the view of the different angles, it's not clear. But I'm with the guys, you know. You see Silva putting his hand on Salah. So, but I don't see whether he just put his hand or he pulled the shirt. I don't see that. So it's too light. It's too uncertain for me to give the penalty. Maybe the referee is so better and so exactly what we are all thinking that maybe it wasn't enough. but I can't say it and I can't overtake that decision.

16:39Frank Leboeuf:It's a shame in all of this. There's been a lot to talk about which is great. Not if you're a Liverpool fan because the fight for them for the Champions League next year is real. Do you mind?
16:50Shaka Hislop:I'm going to interrupt you because I want to get the sound from the managers and then I want to talk about what this means big picture. Here is Pep Guardiola and Arnaz Slott just talking about the gaming channel.
16:59Frank Leboeuf:It's so difficult. So, Anfield is Anfield. The tradition, the history, the crowd always looks smaller, tighter, the pitch always looks not the size like for the Hampusetti at the stadium or the players that they have and everything. The improvement we've made since three or four months ago was I think visible for everyone. So the second half, our standards went up. And standards in terms of intensity, we were pressing them all over the place. And that is the biggest improvement we've made in the last three or four months, that the whole team is now able, at the highest level against a team that's probably one of the best teams, maybe their best team, or one of the best teams in England, in ball possession.
17:51Frank Leboeuf:To do so well off the ball is a big improvement. and fantastic second half. I was expecting more than being 1-0 up, but we weren't, and then two goals conceded.
18:05Shaka Hislop:What are you pulling a face at?
18:09Alejandro Moreno:He's pulling a face at the custom pie on my face. I think he's been a little over-generous, by the way. Let's be quite honest here. He's talking about the improvement in the last three months. They're sitting in sixth position, by the way. They're going that way. They're not going that way. how can you improve if you're going that way doing the table I mean the first 45 minutes was terrible at home, at Anfield in a big game and you go and sit on the top of your box and that's down to you the manager and to just forget about that I'm sorry and then to forget about the last 15 minutes as well because at the end of the day Alisson has brought this all on Liverpool in terms of the second goal so yeah I think he's been a little over positive in trying forget the last 15 and let's forget the first 45 but for 30 minutes we were great
18:58Frank Leboeuf:you're looking at a City side that were bossed by Tottenham in the second half who were in a similar scenario as Liverpool not as bad but had played poorly very poorly and then as Stevie said earlier it can only really get better and we know how poor City have been listen most teams have given City a game in the second half particularly in the last couple of months we talked about that on Friday's show even Wolves at the Etihad when City were 2-0 up Liverpool's fight for the Champions League might be saved by the fifth spot because that's where they are United are above them now Chelsea have been getting wins under the new manager and they had 30-35 minutes of really good football but still lost the game and when he talked about I think he was getting cut up a little bit with the language but when he called City the best team then he corrected himself because they're far from the City of old.
19:54Frank Leboeuf:Had that been the City of old, which I know it's not, it's hypothetical, but had that been City at the pump, that Liverpool team today would have been absolutely taken apart. It would have been over at half-time, wouldn't it? Because City are not killing teams off in the first half of games when they're bossing it. And that's what's been coming back to bite them on the backside. Today it didn't, but I don't think, if we're being honest, it shouldn't have a huge effect on the Premier League title race.
20:20Shaka Hislop:Yet again, Stevie, we see Liverpool conceding late on. In the history of the Premier League, no team has conceded more than Liverpool have already this season. I think they're equal to another side. How do you explain this?
20:35Alejandro Moreno:It's pretty straightforward. You've got a backfall that changes every single time. Almost they step on the field. And they are completely and utterly unsure of what each other are going to do and where the starting positions are. I mean, that's it in a nutshell. You keep making changes, then you'll always get, you won't get any consistency. And then on top of that, you can't include Sobber's life. He's playing out of position. He's got no choice. But the other three, there's no excuse for the way they're playing. They're just playing badly. Frank, how do you explain this? Is there an explanation?
21:14Dan Thomas:No, there isn't, especially because You have two teams who are showing exactly what we have known about them, that Liverpool defensively are very weak this season, where they were so strong, especially with the two centre-backs last season. And you have normally Manchester City drowning the second half, but being capable of troubling Liverpool, and we see nothing from there. And when you play 30 minutes at Anfield against Manchester City on such an important game, you don't deserve to win. So you can try to find any excuses, thinking that it's better. Yeah, I think they were a little bit better.
21:59Dan Thomas:And I agree with Stevie, it doesn't make any sense because they are losing points. But I think they were in the game more consistent, I would say. But today, they showed that it's not enough first. And they still have to improve. maybe they were tired maybe they lost their concentration but how can you can you lose against Manchester City who normally doesn't know what to do in the second half and you conceded two goals you could have even conceded three it's not enough and it's not the Liverpool we know and we have recognised the best piece
22:33Frank Leboeuf:it's a shame this because the best piece of skill we probably have seen anywhere in Europe this whole weekend if not season is in the trash can nobody's talking about it it's the boys live free kick discussion's around everything else he might be king of the pitch on Monday we'll be talking about that was, it has to be said in defeat, with all the controversy, with the non-cultured and the red cars and all the nonsense with the Haaland and this was it that was, bearing in mind there's always been an argument when somebody's as far out as that, you don't need a wall. And they had a wall, but it was a two-man wall, so it was a token gesture.
23:19Frank Leboeuf:And you have, along with Courtois, debatably, the best keeper in the world. And he has been brilliant, as Stevie mentioned, for City. And he just looked at that thing. It was a thing of pure magic. When it happened, you're like...
23:34Alejandro Moreno:I need to see that. What happened there? Eleanor, rewind it! It was like, what happened?
23:38Frank Leboeuf:Get a still. I mean, what happened? Get a still out of the ball hitting the net.
23:42Alejandro Moreno:As soon as he hits it, and then you've done a rumour who's just standing there, and then it goes in off the post, and you're like, how did that happen? I think I saw Gravenberg. I think he just was like that.
23:53Frank Leboeuf:Yeah, his teammates were amazed. Yeah, I couldn't believe it. But anyway, I know it's not the talking point.
23:57Dan Thomas:Can we put that also, because the skill is absolutely fantastic, and I, of course, don't want to put that down in terms of level, what we saw with Soberts Eye, and we saw that also against Arsenal. But because of the football and the texture of the football nowadays, we see that and we've been seeing that with Ronaldo, with so many others, you know, in the past decade or two decades. But before, when we were playing, we have never seen a free kick like that. It couldn't have existed. The ball would have flown above the net. It would have never stayed in the right position. so that's also the football and the texture of the football which allows the players to do that now
24:43Frank Leboeuf:yeah we'd have been doing that every week
24:44Dan Thomas:Roberto Carlos didn't Roberto Carlos do it to your boys that was an old ball that was an exception and I was there that was exceptional but that was really the guy was really an exception
24:56Shaka Hislop:right okay good day then for Manchester City of course yesterday a good day for Manchester United not so though for Christian Romero who we spoke about yesterday of course got this straight red card off the back of saying that he played ill to fight for the team despite the lack of additions in the January transfer window. So Thomas Frank inevitably was asked about his captain after the game. I don't think many expected this answer.
25:23Dan Thomas:If you look at how many red cards he has had it's not like he had that many throughout his career and you know you play with passion and you play with aggression and there's a fine line when you do that. What's got the most in the Premier League since he arrived at the club? At the club? Yeah but not in Premier League.
25:43Frank Leboeuf:Off Premier League players are they? Off Premier League players? Okay, I didn't know that. Craig you weren't here yesterday, we talked about Romero on Friday didn't we? I know yeah and look, he might as well have been holding that Arsenal coffee cup again. you know remember he was holding it at Bournemouth yes I mean he might have just been holding that again and you know he doesn't need any more ridicule from the Tottenham fans because they're already he doesn't need to give them any more reason to ridicule him but he shouldn't I mean I don't know if he should know the exact number but what he should know is that his captain is a head case yeah he is and Dale Johnson our former colleague now at the BBC put out a tweet yesterday saying some panel in England that looks at non-decisions and, you know, it's debatable, said he should have at least had another couple this year.
26:38Frank Leboeuf:You watch the way... No, don't get me wrong. He does some really good things, but they're all offset by the stupid things he does. And when you have a team mate like that, he's just a liability. Never mind a captain. And he charges around... That's the biggest surprise. He's a captain. He charges around making the most... And almost every game you watch him, right? There's almost every... Now, he was a great defender and his mate Alan Hanson, all these guys. They only went to ground if they absolutely had to. But if you watch Romero play, and have watched him for a long time, every time, every game he plays, there's half a dozen challenges that he's very close to getting a red card.
27:24Frank Leboeuf:because he's diving in with such pace that if he doesn't time it perfectly, he's gone. And too many times now he's not. And he is the epitome of reckless. So, look, if Thomas Frank saves his job, I don't know if he will or whatever happens. This is another guy that they're going to have to get rid of because you can't have somebody missing the amount of games that he does. and then you've got Van de Ven who has had all these hamstring issues. So you get your two centre-backs. One you're on tenderhooks with hamstrings and the other one you're on tenderhooks because he's a red card waiting to happen almost every time he plays.
28:08Frank Leboeuf:And at that level of football, you can't have.
28:11Shaka Hislop:Frank, what are you doing, saying, if anything, in the dressing room? If you're a teammate of Romero's.
28:19Dan Thomas:I would talk to him. He said, you know what, I love you. You're such a great player and we know that. But you have to stop that. You have to stop killing us. Because you have to think. You have to refrain yourself at a certain point. You are already enough experience to stop that. I mean, it's funny because on the other side, you are Lissandro Martinez and you can also blame Martinez. And we have done that many times for going too far away. But those players, they're very good players. But they have to calm down. They have to, yeah, cool their blood. because that's a liability, as the guy said.
28:55Dan Thomas:And I follow TV, I think it was yesterday, or I don't know, or Friday, I don't remember, I think it was yesterday, talking about Romero and saying that's impossible. You cannot carry on like that, being the captain and putting your teammates in danger and losing games because of your idiotic, as he said, move and not thinking that much and over what you have to think. I made one mistake one day and I got a red card and I tell you Roberto Di Matteo came to me and said Frank you cannot do that to us and it happened once but it cannot happen twice twice? Yeah get out it's too much I mean it's so important they had an important game this weekend and they lost because of him because they played better than Manchester United before his red card
29:44Frank Leboeuf:I was watching one game you never got sent off in this game but it just absolutely sowed the seed in my mind that this guy doesn't think. It's a very randomness. It was Eintracht Frankfurt, second leg in the Europa League semi-final, I believe. And Tottenham were defending for their lives and it was injury time and every player was in the box and Frankfurt were lobbing balls in. Christian Romero headed this ball out of the box and then proceeded alone to charge 30 or 40 yards to try and then go and close the ball down. Whilst they lobbed it back in the box. And I thought to myself, this guy's just like a bull in a china shop.
30:23Frank Leboeuf:He doesn't think, he just reacts. When I saw that particular incident, there was no challenge, there was no red card. But he basically abandoned his penalty box and his team to go chasing and be the Superman hero. And I think, what the hell is he doing? This guy's won a World Cup. You have to think that you would be, particularly with his experience, you would engage your football brain a little bit more.
30:51Alejandro Moreno:He's been playing too long to change now. I mean, he's not changing. He's not changing. No, it's like you and Mintz. Correct.
31:00Shaka Hislop:Extra time is available over on our YouTube channels. We continue to reflect on what happened at Anfield today. Plus, someone is asking, Stevie, what puts you in a good mood? Mintz. FA Cup then. Stevie's learned that he will be on Birmingham against Leeds. What an early start on Sunday for you, Stevie. He's the perfect man. Thank you, O 'Reilly.
31:23Alejandro Moreno:I'm going to set about five alarms. Watch the bets that he better have somebody on standby. No, Stevie will be good. Eleanor will get him up. How many of you need to bring breakfast and lunch? Oh, Eleanor, come on. Well, she'll be busy.

32:41Shaka Hislop:Real Madrid taking on Valencia on Sunday. They did so without Vinicius Junior, who was suspended. Rodrigo and Bellingham both injured. They'd win by two goals to nil. Carreras with the first and the 65th minute. Mbappe late on, making it 2-0. Far from convincing once again then from Abelhoa's side, but enough to give them three points. Real Madrid then are one point still of Barcelona at the top of the table. Atleti losing today. Meanwhile at the bottom you can just see how close it is. We've discussed this of course at length how tight it is really for the whole bottom half of the table but for Valencia they are very much in the danger zone just one ahead of Raio Vercano.
33:24Shaka Hislop:For more let's welcome in shall we. Sid Lowe joins us from Valencia. Sid it doesn't matter it doesn't matter that Venetius Jr is not there or Bellingham isn't there or Rodrigo's injured. This is exactly the same we've seen from Real Madrid pretty much all season, just enough to get across the line. Yeah, and I think that's an important point because I think you can look at this performance from Real Madrid tonight and obviously, look, the first thing is they won and they're only one point behind Barcelona, which is quite extraordinary, really, when you look at the way they play and the way that Barcelona play.
33:55Shaka Hislop:And you could look at tonight and you could say, well, yeah, the most important thing was they won in the absence of those really key players and that it wouldn't be fair to analyse, if you like, the unconvincing nature of this performance or maybe not the unconvincing nature of the performance so much as the kind of the flat, almost empty nature of the performance on the basis of those absentees. But that's just not the case because for the immense majority of this season, we've seen a Real Madrid side that have underwhelmed us, a Real Madrid side that haven't created a huge amount, a Real Madrid side that have looked vulnerable in the moments in which other teams have taken the game to them.
34:26Shaka Hislop:And I thought we saw that again tonight against the Valencia side who didn't really dare to take the next step forward, I think, who were very conscious that if they did step up too much, they would be caught on the break. and so never quite did it. And bear in mind as well, it's a Valencia team that's only one point currently off the relegation zone. The team below them has a game in hand, so could be in the relegation zone. And so we're in a situation in which we're kind of going round and round in circles. All year we're thinking Real Madrid aren't very good, but they are very definitely in a title race.
34:54Shaka Hislop:Yep, absolutely.
34:55Frank Leboeuf:Well, we just keep talking about the Barcelona high lane and they're winning. We keep talking about Real Madrid being rubbish and they're winning, picking up the points. It's a sign of champions, isn't it? Well, there you go. I say that tongue-in-cheek. Now, Rob Palmer, I keep going back to this, who was on the game for us, he's not here to defend himself, but before the Mbappe second goal... Tough. Tough, Rob. Clip this up and send it to him. Rob, who's obviously very easy to please, said, this is a 7 out of 10 performance from Real Madrid. I'm thinking, what planet? I mean, this is... It's a win.
35:28Frank Leboeuf:Again, we're going round in circles. As Sid said, it's a win. somehow there's just contrasting styles at the top of La Liga, you've got Atleti who are completely out of it and lost today the contrasting styles but somehow there is a title race, I mean there's not a title race in England, I wouldn't imagine but somehow there's a title race in Spain we talked about this before the game this game, the Real Madrid game I suppose they can They have. Can they keep playing like that, Stevie?
36:02Alejandro Moreno:And win a league? Well, we keep saying they can't win the league if they keep playing like this. But they might. They might. Well, they might because he's one guy.
36:13Shaka Hislop:Exactly. And that one guy, 38 goals in 31 games, Sid.
36:20Shaka Hislop:Yeah, it's extraordinary. And I didn't think tonight was a particularly good performance from him. He had a handful of moments. I thought actually last week against Raya Vallecano, I thought he was dreadful. by his very, very high standards. And he didn't really have a huge influence. He then, of course, scored the late penalty. And of those goals, a lot of them are penalties. I believe it's eight penalties in La Liga. I think there's a couple more in the Champions League. But he is scoring goals at a phenomenal rate. Now, of course, there are questions about how this fits with the rest of the team, how you build the team around him, what you get in terms of the press at the top of the pitch.
36:51Shaka Hislop:And we've discussed this a lot this season. But you can just not get away from those figures. And his finishing is so good. and once he gets a run on you feel like there's no way that anyone's going to catch him. As for Valencia, Sid caught up with Dan Juma after the game. There's a huge amount of pressure. The situation you're in is a situation that might be normal for some clubs but a club of the size of Valencia with the fan base that Valencia has got. Emotionally, is that hard for a player to live with that degree of pressure and possibly even that degree of fear? I'll say that's a personal take.
37:24Shaka Hislop:I'll say yes, in general. all. But what I will say is, I think if the pressure is too much, you shouldn't be playing for Valencia Football Club. This is a club with pressure, this is a club that's one of the biggest trophies in the world, this is a club that deserves to be fighting for the league title, deserves to be playing European football. It deserves it. So if it's a club that deserves it, it comes with pressure. If you don't want enough pressure, you can't play for a club this big. So in general, I think it's difficult, yes, but it's part of the game. Dan Jumma is certainly not holding back Sid that's what the Valencia fans will want to hear from their players but they want to see it on the pitch as well.
38:07Shaka Hislop:Yeah of course and just before that answer Dan Jumma was talking about the work that they do in building up to games and he said look I think our work is good he said you look at our statistics and it's good you look at our underlying values and it's good and we have to trust in what we are doing but in the end you need to win. Now, of course, they've had a couple of big victories over the last few weeks. One secured in the 84th minute, one secured in the 94th minute, which really changed the feel of things because those six points have been huge in terms of giving them a tiny, tiny bit of a cushion from the relegation zone.
38:37Shaka Hislop:But they are under enormous pressure. And I think you can really feel it in this stadium. Now, this is one of the great stadiums in Spain, Miss Dier. And last season, when they turned things around with Carlos Corbada and the manager and came in and completely changed things and took them from a potential relegation fight to close to European football, He talked repeatedly about the importance of this place, the noise that this place makes, the fans behind them, 45 ,000 in here today. And that definitely played a part. I think the risk this season is that it plays a part in the other direction.
39:05Shaka Hislop:The pressure put upon the players gets bigger and bigger. The complaints from the fans get bigger and bigger. Because as Dan Juma says, this is a club that's used to competing for European football, that has won the league title twice in this century, that has got a huge European heritage as well. and so today for example we felt it in those moments when Valencia didn't take a step forward and the analysis perhaps is that they shouldn't do because if you do Madrid will catch you on the break when they didn't do so there was kind of a tension a nervousness a whistling for them to step forward when Carlos Corborda made a couple of the changes late in the second half they whistled him they then appealed for him to leave the club appealed for the owners of the club to leave now that's a different issue and I think a lot more justified but that I think all comes together to create a situation in which what should be, if you like, the key thing that will help Valencia survive, there is a risk, of course, that it goes the other way.
39:53Shaka Hislop:Thank you very much, Sid. Much appreciated. Just a reminder, of course, we've got Copa del Rey action. Midweek, semi-finals, Athletic Club against Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid against Barca on the Thursday.

Luis Diaz was the star of the show as Bayern Munich thrashed Hoffenheim by five goals to one. The Colombian got two assists and three goals to put Vincent Kompany's side six points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table. After the match, Archer caught up with Harry Kane and Kompany. Vincent, I can't remember too many teams trying to take the game to you in the fashion that hoffenheim have in the bundesliga this season to come out and still win it 5-1 how does that feel how did you see the game i think it's it's good the third in the bundesliga we won 5-1 and um you know i think it was a bit of a game of defensively i thought we were really good when we started we gave nothing away we had the intensity we won the jewels and we looked like we were dangerous every single time we had the ball.
42:01Shaka Hislop:So I think we maintained being dangerous the whole game. But, you know, perhaps here and there in the first half, especially we dropped a little bit the intensity when they went down to 10. And we allowed gaps that normally we wouldn't... We allowed gaps that we didn't allow at the start of the game when it was 11 v 11. But it's not the first time I've seen this in my life in football. You always want the very best, but the most important is we have very important three points and we had plenty of chances. I think the fans have seen a lot of attempts on goal and I think they love that. It's not just today that Luis Diaz has been outstanding.
42:38Shaka Hislop:It's just he's got the goals to go with everything. How would Vincent Kompany, the player, have dealt with Luis Diaz as an opponent? I'm not going to give that one away because I don't want opponents to think that's how we need to do it. Now, look, he's a very difficult player to play against anyway. I said he has a bit of that chaos creativity where, you know, most players, they receive the ball and then they go from A to B and then you can kind of see what they're trying to... With Lucho, you never know what he wants to do, you know, and everything happens within the flow and he's extremely creative in chaos.
43:15Shaka Hislop:So that's something that helps us a lot. Is it a coincidence that your team is so good at scoring just before half-time in so many key games this season, I'd make about eight of them, where just where the game looks like it might be in the balance, you go and hit the opponent? I mean, we have quality players and that's what they do. I think they... I'd like to say they never switch off, but for sure they switch back on, you know what I mean, in the right time. You know, it doesn't take them too many moments to make the difference. I don't think we scored as much as we could today. We could have scored more, but I think we scored at the right time every time and that's also quality.
43:57Shaka Hislop:Yeah, I just think when you look at our team, you look at our squad, we're coming into the business end of the season now. We have a full, fit, healthy squad and we want to try and keep it that way. The competition this week in training, the level in training has been as high as it's ever been. Everyone wants to play, everyone wants to get on the pitch and that's only going to push us to even hopefully better heights. So, yeah, it was an important win today because obviously there's been a lot of noise over the last week or so and we had a full week to prepare and we've had to listen to that. So it was good, especially the way we started and then also the way we finished.
44:30Shaka Hislop:So that's one important game for you out the way. What about the other one tonight? Oh, yeah, the Super Bowl. Yeah, I'm a Patriots fan, so I'm rocking for the Patriots. It's going to be a tough game for them. Seahawks look good, their defence looks good. But in the Super Bowl, anything can happen. So let's go, Patriots. Harry, thank you very much. Thank you. Cheers. Cheers. So Bayern Munich restore that six-goal lead at the top of the table.
44:57Shaka Hislop:Bundesliga, of course, takes a little break domestically from the league to the Polk Hall midweek. Her to Berlin against Freiburg and Bayern Munich against Leipzig. They're semi-finals live on ESPN+.

47:17Shaka Hislop:PSG facts at the top of the table in some style. They thrashed Marseille in Lacroix. Two clear now of Lens. Marseille dropped a fourth in the table. Meanwhile in Serie A, big win for Inter. Eight clear at the top of Serie A. Napoli meanwhile, sorry, Juventus withdraw with Lazio, meaning that they are now 12 points off the top of the table. 48:09Shaka Hislop:Welcome in to the latest edition of Extra Time. Craig is here. Stevie as well. Frank LeBeouf. I'm so disappointed with our producer yesterday who told you the name of the Patriots quarterback when I asked you. I knew it anyway, though. Oh, yeah, right. Drake May. Yeah, he didn't know.
48:25Alejandro Moreno:There you go. I did know.
48:27Shaka Hislop:You didn't know Drake?
48:29Alejandro Moreno:Yes, I did. How come he told you in the ear, then? Well, all I told you was he said it in my ear, but I knew it anyway. No, you didn't. Shut up.
48:37Shaka Hislop:Don't go on the defensive now. Why did you need it? I didn't ask for it.
48:40Alejandro Moreno:Well, you got it. Did I ask for it? You got it. Did you hear me asking for it? You got it. Well, it's nothing to do with me. You got it, though, didn't you? You wouldn't have got it otherwise. Of course I would, I was too busy. I was talking to Shaq. I was talking to Shaq. Here. Here. What? Do you think?
48:56Frank Leboeuf:Here's a question for you. Right, okay. Me? I am. No, you. Me. Will the Super Bowl get you enough attention and your full attention tonight or are you doubling up with YouTube on your phone?
49:10Shaka Hislop:He'll have YouTube as well.
49:11Frank Leboeuf:Because the first commercial he's off on YouTube.
49:13Shaka Hislop:A video on his phone. And then he's off on his tangent.
49:16Alejandro Moreno:I think I know what'll happen. What'll happen? Well, because Eleanor will start watching it. He'll see if we're watching it when we get in. Because he'll have already started, right? Yeah, because we're blabbering on that with this intro. But I'm going to guess that, unless the Patriots are winning, I'm going to guess that as soon as she decides she's had enough, I'll probably go on a bit of YouTube. OK, good.
49:36Frank Leboeuf:You know, I'd quite happily miss the whole Super Bowl for another Cologne-Leipzig disallowed offside goal.
49:45Shaka Hislop:Right from the show. For Stevie, as a manager, what do you tell a player like Javi Sly who got himself sent off when the game was already gone but also put forth immense effort for the club in the dying minutes of the game?
49:57Alejandro Moreno:You don't, do you? In that situation, you don't say anything to anybody. It's not one way or the other. Right. Yeah, nothing.
50:05Shaka Hislop:Frank, is there a reason why Liverpool always pull back after going a goal ahead? defense is clearly not their strong suit and repeatedly this season they lose control of games when they start trying to protect Leeds.
50:17Dan Thomas:Yeah, there is a reason because it goes in their mind. They know that something is going wrong as soon as they score a goal and everybody gets a little bit fragile and shaky and that's what it is, which is sad because you have so much experienced players so they should resolve the problem quickly and be sure that what they have done before is capable of doing it again. So it's for me a question mark. I don't have the answer for that. I don't know why they keep on doing that. Where they should try, especially today, with Manchester City, where we all know that it's second half, they're not that good.
50:56Dan Thomas:You have to finish the job. But they drop a bit. They're getting shaky, as I said, and they concede goals. Stevie, do you think Liverpool
51:04Shaka Hislop:will make the top five this season? So who have we got? Arsenal, City, Chelsea, United. Villa. Liverpool, Villa. Villa, Liverpool.
51:15Alejandro Moreno:So it's probably five from those six, right? I would say so, yeah. Because Everton are in seventh or where? They're not, no. I can't honestly turn around and factically say, yes, they will make the top five. I can't. Oh, Brentford are in seventh, sorry. Yeah, it's...
51:33Shaka Hislop:So percentage between you and Villa, how would you chop it up? right now. Look at me, Villa are eight points ahead of you. Yeah. Oh, well that's, yeah, Villa, Villa, Villa are going to make,
51:44Frank Leboeuf:yeah, Villa are fine. Mm-hmm. I think it's a three-horse race, Man United, Chelsea, Liverpool. Three-horse race for two places?
51:54Alejandro Moreno:Oh, yeah, for two places, yeah. Yeah. No, I wouldn't think Brentford could, I can't argue with you. I can't honestly sit here and put a case that there's no question Liverpool will finish ahead of Chelsea and Man United. I can't. I can't. No. Nope. No. Not looking good.
52:10Shaka Hislop:No. What's something that always puts you in a good mood, Frank?
52:16Dan Thomas:Watching you, Dan. Oh, yes. Watching the show. I've told you about that. Of course. No, good breakfast. Oh. A nice breakfast, yeah, put me in a good mood. What? That's nice. But yeah, that's it. That's it. Nice. You know, one thing will put me in a good mood, you know, I was on stage today and you know, but I know that naming the city where I'm in today, because in English, it's always strange to name that name. You know where I am right now?
52:53Shaka Hislop:Yes, you're impressed.
52:54Dan Thomas:I think you can say that.
52:55Shaka Hislop:I'll tell you what.
52:55Dan Thomas:We're all right. Let's not.
52:57Shaka Hislop:I'll tell you what. There you go. You all right? No, I'm just saying.
53:01Frank Leboeuf:What? Wow, that was a good looking breakfast.
53:06Shaka Hislop:Hey, Stevie has his big breakfast, hasn't he? Yeah, but his breakfast and Frankie's breakfast. Yes, I imagine they are. They are poles apart. Different sides of it. Oh, yeah. A game of golf. Nodding? Are you in a good mood?
53:17Frank Leboeuf:If I know I'm playing golf.
53:20Alejandro Moreno:Yes. Like, with a lads. Why are you nodding? You gave up golf? That's the answer. I'm not saying that's... All right, I thought you were agreeing. No, I'm with him. He's just nodding. I'm nodding in agreement. It does, it totally changes It does, it changes your whole attitude What? Are you talking to him? Aye What changes your attitude? Well, you know, generally, you know when you're looking at somebody and talking I know, but you pack golf I'm not talking to you, I'm talking to him Okay, the little guy
53:47Shaka Hislop:How are we, man?
53:49Frank Leboeuf:Well, if I put you in such a good mood, why'd you pack it up? I never said anything I was agreeing with you then, but cheers you up How'd you know? I just told you
53:57Alejandro Moreno:Well, because I know Seriously Why did you wake up with him in the morning going You're in a good mood I was trying If you had asked me that question Cheers him up Mind your own business So when he said golf It's not about him, it's about you now I'm still on him And you're done Cheers me up
54:24Shaka Hislop:Getting a lie in bed in the morning Absolutely And what time is a lie in? what time would you ideally like to wake up?
54:32Alejandro Moreno:Well, waking up and then turning over are two different things.
54:39Shaka Hislop:Stevie, it's a simple question. Why are you being...
54:42Alejandro Moreno:Well, because it's not quite as straightforward as you think, you know. What time, ideally, do you wake up in the morning? My dad had a set for something. I generally will wake up.
54:50Frank Leboeuf:You could sleep your brains into train oil. Aye, there you go. You can sleep for... It's unbelievable. Six or seven in the morning, I'm awake.
54:59Alejandro Moreno:I'll generally week up a bit half eight, but then I'll turn over again and then maybe week up a bit ten.
55:06Shaka Hislop:If I need to talk to you, I know not to call you before 11, basically.
55:09Alejandro Moreno:Aye, that's a good shirt.
55:10Shaka Hislop:Yeah. God, we got there in the end. That was hard work. Marcus Edwards of Burnley wore the tiniest shin pads on Saturday. Did you see these? Oh, yeah. They were little circles. Yeah, I've seen plows. Are shin pads really that uncomfortable to wear? and is it dangerous not to wear them at all in the modern game? In the modern game?
55:30Alejandro Moreno:Yeah. Not particularly, certainly not as it. It used to be you couldn't play without them. Right. Put it that way. But now? Now most players will get away with it. Not. Well, that's the reason why that guy's got those silly little things. Yes. Because you still do need them a little bit, but... Are they that uncomfortable? No.
55:52Frank Leboeuf:No. They don't have to be huge, but they have to be bigger than that. That's no protection whatsoever. It's not uncomfortable at all. No, no.
56:00Dan Thomas:Frank? No, I started my career without wearing any shin pads because it wasn't compulsory. But at our time, that was, I think, very useful. Nowadays, yeah, by accident, you can be hurt. But really, you don't really need shin pads nowadays. There's so much protected that for me, that's stupid what the guy put, because that's not even shin pads. That was something when you have a little injury, but that's not the shin pad.
56:28Shaka Hislop:Final question, Super Bowl tonight, what will be on the menu? Frank, I'm guessing you're going to go to bed, aren't you? You're not going to watch?
56:34Dan Thomas:Yeah, no, I'm not going to watch because at the hotel, they don't show it. It's a special channel, and so I'm not going to be able to see it. It's the first time that I miss Super Bowl for the past, I think, 20 years, but that's what it is.
56:49Shaka Hislop:There we go. I've been told I've got to pick up wings on the way home even though we've got a house full of food. That's just normal. It's a special occasion.
57:00Alejandro Moreno:They won't go to waste.
57:02Shaka Hislop:Stephen, what will you have for dinner tonight?
57:05Alejandro Moreno:I'll be having some beers first. Yes. Then I'll make the decision later on to find out how it feels. How the game goes. Right, lovely.
57:14Shaka Hislop:A liquid dinner. There you are. That is it. That brings us to the end of the... Soup. Soup. Possibly.
57:24Alejandro Moreno:Possibly.
57:26Shaka Hislop:Predictions?
57:27Alejandro Moreno:It'll be wet.
57:28Frank Leboeuf:Tell the producer. Yeah.
57:30Shaka Hislop:Right. Game's starting in 25 minutes. I'm right. OK, there you are. I tried. ESPN FC returns tomorrow. Dimitar Berbatov will be here, of course, to play with Michael Carrick, to talk positively for once about Manchester United.
