In short

ESPN FC discusses Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Anfield vs Nottingham Forest, focusing on the 69th-minute foul-throw/penalty controversy, Liverpool’s defensive issues, and what new signings (Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and rumored/linked Bradley Barcola) mean for the season. It also covers Spurs’ 0-2 loss to Newcastle and Atletico Madrid’s 3-1 win over Sevilla, plus a brief “Extra Time” segment about U.S. players abroad.

Guests (backgrounds)

Kay Murray (host), Alejandro Moreno (former pro/analyst), Chaka Hislop (former goalkeeper/analyst), Don Hutchison (former player/IFAB/VAR rules discussion), Rich Eisen (host/segment voice), Adamola Lukman (Atletico forward; Simeone’s team), Adrian Healy (reporter in Seville/mix zone), plus De Zerbi and Roberto De Zerbi quotes via match coverage; also includes Newcastle/Spurs game analysis voices.

Key claims

Liverpool were poor first half, improved second half, but lacked energy and defensive organization; VAR should have corrected a foul throw leading to a penalty; Liverpool need a more aggressive holding midfielder and better fullbacks; Spurs’ problem is mentality/character after conceding early; Newcastle’s squad changes under a new manager look promising; Atletico dominated first half, then managed the game.

Notable examples

Danendoy’s 24th-minute Forest goal; Wurtz offside goal ruled out; Isak equalized after Gakpo cross; Gibbs-White penalty after Alisson foul; Liverpool level again via Somersheim/Victor Munoz in 82nd; Spurs conceded to Anthony Elanga (62nd) and Johan Wisser (73rd); Atletico raced to 3-0 at halftime, then Sevilla’s Miguel Sierra pulled one back.

0:34Dan Thomas:Hello and welcome into the latest edition of ESPN FC. Kay Murray, Alejandro Moreno and Chaka Hislop here in the studio. Kicking things off tonight in the Premier League. At Anfield for Andoni Iriola's first game at Anfield as Liverpool took on Nottingham Forest. Forest took the lead in the 24th minute through Danendoy. Soon after, Liverpool thought they'd equalise but Florian Wurtz's goal was ruled out for an offside in the build-up. However, Liverpool would strike back on the hour mark when Cody Gagpo crossed for Alexander Isak. He tapped home. Then in the 70th minute, Forrest restored their lead from the penalty spot, courtesy of Morgan Gibbs-White after Alisson brought down Nico Williams.

1:14Dan Thomas:But Somersheim and Victor Munoz brought Liverpool level again in the 82nd. The game ended 2-2, Liverpool twice coming from behind to secure a point. Afterwards, Antoni Iriola spoke about the feeling of his squad after the results. Yes, I'm frustrated because you want to win, especially at home, because it's not a good result, a draw at home. It's true that we've come back from too bad to results where we were losing, like the other against Newcastle, but at the end what makes the difference are the wins, the three points. I've liked what we've done in the second half, but we haven't been able to complete the comeback and the point leaves you frustrated.

2:04Dan Thomas:Don Hutchison is joining us now to talk more about this and we're actually going to start with what led to the penalty and a foul throw-in in the 69th minute when Forest Liam de Lapp took a quick throw-in that then released Nico Williams who was then brought down by Alisson. So there's been a lot of talk about this and it's a funny place to start, Don, but here we are. What are your thoughts on it? it's a foul throw all day long but it's something that VAR can't get involved with it's just one of those complications and the nuances of the rules it was definitely a foul throw, Delap's right leg was completely off the floor I thought it was a very frustrating performance from Liverpool I'm starting to lose a bit of confidence in the fullbacks I'm not sure if they're up to the job Isak was very very quiet apart from his goal the more the game was going on There was a bit of a spark in the second half and a bit of a lift from Liverpool.

2:56But first half, they were nowhere near it.

2:59Dan Thomas:OK, let's stick with that controversy because you're Mr. IFAB. Yeah, it's a follow-through. I don't think there's any doubt to that. I don't understand why VAR can't get involved, to Don's point. It's clearly a follow-through. It clearly has a direct impact in the game. Don was rubbing shoulders with VR a couple of weeks ago. And apparently they are saying that I can't remember what they said. Well, I'm glad you brought it up then. No, but it was along the lines of VR will be more reliable this time around. And I was like, okay, we'll see them practice. VR can intervene when a corner is wrongly awarded.

3:45I don't understand why there's this big gap between that and this instance when, again, it leads directly to a penalty and a goal. Yeah, so now we're getting into sort of the details and in between the lines of what VAR can check or not check, how they can get involved, not involved. Am I asking for too much and saying, how about we just make the right call? Mm-hmm. Is it too much? It's not a, I don't think it's a very high threshold and just saying, just make the right call. If it was a foul throw and it impacted the play in the manner in which it did, then take it back. And now we have no discussion.

4:28But because we're in this loopholes in which everybody's kind of trying to cover their backsides, it's like, well, we're not allowed to do anything about it. Okay. If you're not allowed to do anything about it as a VAR, okay, fine, I suppose I can understand that. Well, what about the referee on the field? What about those that are officiating the game? It is obviously a foul throw. It is beyond discussion. And it was surprising in the broadcast that was shown to us here that it was never brought up as a point of discussion and a point of conversation. It was never brought up in the analysis of the game post-match.

5:04And I'm thinking, while everybody's focusing as to whether Allison makes contact with the attacking player or not and whether it's a penalty or not on Nico Williams, focus on the actual foul throw, on the actual play that should not have happened. None of this matters if that is called correctly. And that's the part that I think is frustrating. Beyond the fact that VAR cannot get involved because, again, of all the loopholes that I just mentioned, it seemed a pretty straightforward decision, and yet nothing to see here. We move on. Impact the game. It has a big impact on the game because even though Liverpool wasn't playing well, even though they were poor in the first half, even though they had been down, they tied the game up and all the momentum was with Liverpool.

5:47Again, not having played well, but if there was going to be a winner in this match, it felt like it was going to be Liverpool because at the very least they had momentum with them given the fact that they had just tied the game. And this, again, changed the nature of the match and in the end, it changes the final result. The thing for me is if there was a foul, if it was a foul, I suppose a foul through, there's no question. VR intervenes and is called back. This similarly is an infringement of the laws. I just don't understand this gray area that is being kind of forced on us. It's a foul. And that shouldn't be a gray area.

6:22There's absolutely no reason for this to be a gray area. Absolutely none. I mean, it's common sense, isn't it? It's common sense. It's one of them, Kay, as well, where you don't really need VAR to get involved. You just need the fourth official who's standing there just to say to the referee, by the way, ref, foul throw. You don't have to take it back to the TV audience. Surely there's a bit of communication where the fourth official can just say to the referee, or the VAR team can just say to the referee, by the way, you've missed a foul throw. Surely there's got to be some common sense somewhere.

6:55Dan Thomas:OK, let's get to the game then, Don. You said you were frustrated yourself and not too happy. You brought up Alexander Isak. He did get a goal, though. What more do you want to see from him? Oh, he needs to be stronger, Kay. I mean, the first half, he got brushed off the ball three or four times when he was in good areas inside the 18-yard box. His holder play weren't particularly good. He's not convincing for midfield players. There was loads wrong with Liverpool. I mean, Dominic Sabozlai can't play as a double pivot in midfield. He's a number 10. So either he's got to go at right back, which then allows Florian versus the players a number 10.

7:29But Isak, when you're leading the line now, he's been there a year. Yes, he's had a bad leg break, but he's back from that. He's been through a preseason. he's into two games, 290 minutes, good. That's minutes in the bank. But if you're going to play for Liverpool Football Club, you've got to wear that shirt and you have to be bigger and you have to prove to the world that you are capable of playing for Liverpool Football Club on top of the price tag. Even if you cost£5 million, you've got to prove to everyone that you can play for Liverpool Football Club. When you cost the money that he's got, you've got to do a lot more in your general build-up.

8:02And to that point, Kay, And when you watch Liverpool play specifically today and you watch Alexander Isaac, and I understand what Don is saying and where he's coming from, the level of activity has to be a whole lot higher than what we saw today. And to put that into context, you look at a player like Victor Munoz, who may not be the player that Alexander Isaac is, but he's throwing his body around. He's running at people. It's a step over here, a step over there. Change of pace here, change of pace there. And it's not the same profile of player, but at the very least, you're seeing activity. And activity at home at Anfield creates excitement.

8:46So it got to the point that whenever Victor Munoz was running at a defender, their Anfield felt like there may be something about to happen here. You never really got the sense that something was about to happen when Isa was on the ball because he wasn't on the ball all that often, nor was he running in behind, nor was he being all that active. And so I only bring up Victor Munoz just to kind of compare and contrast that a player that at the very least is running, changing the pace of the game, that is getting here, that is coming there, that is busy, that is active, does elevate the amount of excitement and interest in the match from the fans in Anfield, and therefore puts a whole lot more pressure on the defending team, in this case not even Forrest.

9:27You just didn't see enough of that. Not just from Isaac, but from many other players in Liverpool. Even in the second half, even if they were better than they had been in the first half, it's just a team that for me is lacking life, soul, energy. Let me see something. Show me some excitement. They don't seem to be bringing it to the field. And so therefore for Anfield, it becomes a very frustrating experience.

9:48Dan Thomas:Yeah. Xhaka, one player I want to mention as well, while we're talking about the big names and the big signings, is Florian Wurz today had a goal that was ruled off for offside in the build-off. Forced a save out of the goalkeeper and set the goal up for Victor Munoz. Better showing from him today? Better showing compared to probably arguably anything we've seen from him last season. And I think for Liverpool to be anywhere near the top of the table, Florian Wurz and Alexander-Izac have to have very big seasons. I think it's been a good start from Florian Virts. It's a long way from what we saw at Leverkusen, but it's also a long way from what we saw for just about all of last season.

10:24Florian Virts, like Alexander Izak, confidence players, when their confidence is high and they get on the ball and take defenders on, there are few players like Florian Virts in world football. Confidence took a knock. It's looking like it's on the way back. if he regains that I think again Liverpool can be can be an absolute handful but then that also depends on Alexander Isaac finding his

10:51Dan Thomas:Florian Wurtz was your player of the season Don in your early season predictions right? Yeah he was yeah I mean I wish I'd changed it to Cole Palmer but he was better today I mean you got the impression when you watched him today the kid can't just catch a break I mean he scored a goal that was disallowed marginally offside when Frimpon couldn't get back onside that would have given him a shot of confidence. Then he shrugged that off. He was lively during the game. He had a header that got tipped over the bar. He got an assist. He looked like he was getting in better areas. I think Ira Ola said that after the game today.

11:24He said, he's my man. I trust him. I've got full trust in him. We're going to work. And hopefully the sign of Bradley Barcola frees up Florian Virts because you can imagine if Barcola's flying, he's going to attract defenders, midfield players over to him. Therefore, you'd like to think that Florian Virts is going to find that little bit more space. But in terms of the showing from what he produced today to last week, much better.

11:45Dan Thomas:Let's get to Barcola then. Liverpool agreeing a deal for Bradley Barcola, €145 million, which is the same as what was paid for Alexander Isak. This does inject some real quality into that Liverpool attack, doesn't it, Ali? Well, it injects a change of pace, energy, speed. The things that I was just talking about that this team seem to have been missing, and so therefore I think that's important. Barcola, while he is an outstanding talent and a player who was working his way through what was a very crowded front line at PSG and had an impact for PSG, final product. That is the question that I have with him.

12:22He gets himself in a lot of good positions because of his qualities, because of his natural talent, because of his ability to run him behind, because of the speed that he had. But sometimes that final decision is not the best. and you can say that about many players currently in Liverpool already. And so I would be excited if I were a Liverpool fan. I'm thinking that Barcola is going to bring something different and in that natural talent, that kind of change of speed that I just mentioned, he's going to create chances for himself and for others. If he brings also the final touch, the final piece of product that is really going to provide goals and assists for Liverpool, now we're talking.

13:01Now you can get really excited because I do think that he can be a difference-making in the final third.

13:06Dan Thomas:You agree, Shaq? I do. I think Barcourt is an incredible talent. To Ali's point, at PSG, you're never quite sure if he was starting or Dwey starting. Arriving at Anfield, I don't think there's any doubt, certainly, once he gets himself match fit, if his name is going to be on the team sheet. And just having that freedom to play his game and know that he'll get picked next week, know that he's not being judged on every single touch or every single mistake, more to the point, I think allows Barcola to develop and blossom as a player. I like this setting a lot for Liverpool. Yeah, it seems a bit weird to say what I'm going to say to you now, Don, because obviously he's coming from PSG.

13:44Dan Thomas:They're back-to-back Champions League winners. But will there be any of that pressure that we've seen on the likes of Virts and Isak coming to Anfield and being expected to deliver straight away? absolutely absolutely they will be because you sign up for Liverpool Football Club you sign up for a record fee and you come with good pedigree and you come with a good reputation he's super speedy as the lads have said he's got a terrific running gate he can take players on he'd be a nightmare for any defenders and the funny thing is I mean you look at the transfer fees there I mean he's well up in the pecking order but we all know the potential's there and he's still young you know Isak's just above him so Liverpool have splashed the cash And the funny thing is, when you look at Liverpool, you think, surely, surely in a world where they've got Bradley Barcola, Florian Wurtz, Alexander Isak, Hugo Eketike, surely you just think, well, how can it not work?

14:37The difference is they haven't got an aggressive holder midfield player. They were linked with Monaco's Lamine Kamara the other day. Apparently, he's been linked heavily with Chelsea. I commentated on Bournemouth today. Alex Scott ran the show for them today. He was amazing. So they're going to need a holder midfield player. Otherwise, that midfield is too light. It's too nice to play against. There's no spite in there. They've had four or five years since Fabinho left. They've still not replaced him. They've not found a right winger yet, even though Mo Salah told the club he was leaving six months ago.

15:06So there's still one or two holes, and I'm not convinced of the fullbacks neither. Can I just say very quickly, while we focus on the things that Liverpool did or didn't do offensively, What, for me, unacceptable, and it's an untenable situation, is that you get scored in the manner in which you did so early in the game. This is your first game of the season. At home, there should be this amount of excitement about the team. And a long ball over the top finds somebody in a non-side position. And even as that ball is being played over the top, you have enough time to then recover and react to it, and you still don't get enough numbers behind the ball.

15:47Virgil van Dijk stepping up. Others are not. They're all disorganized. The shape of the back line is all over the place. We can focus on the attacking half, and I know why we do it, because the big names are on that side of the field. But if this team is going to do the things that Shaka believes they're going to do this season, Shaka hadn't finished second in the league. If indeed that's going to happen, good luck, Shaka. Defensively, it has to be a whole lot better. And I understand the point that Don is making in a defensive midfielder. Well taken. But that back line as well. Good Lord, have mercy.

16:21You cannot continue to give up the sort of goals that you're giving up and pretend that you're going to be a team that is competing at the top of the Premier League. I will add to that. I think defensively, Liverpool have a lot of work to do. Those two wingbacks like to bomb on, kickers and frimpong. And then, especially in the Newcastle game, they just got done for pace all day long. It was the understanding and the partnership between Van Dijk and Jacquet not quite there yet. And it just it has these major gaps to it. But just going back to Barcola and the pressure and whether it's the same pressure that Isaac and Wurz felt when they signed for similar money.

16:55Keep in mind, those two came into the league champions. I think that was a pressure that told on them. Barcola, different circumstance. Liverpool were in that great last season. He only improves. So while the price tag is similar, the pressure for me is a little different.

17:13Dan Thomas:However, Cody Gakpau could be on his way out at Liverpool. He's been one of the more reliable players, Don. How are you feeling about this? Not great. I think if you analyse Liverpool's first two games easily, he's been Liverpool's best player in a squad that's very small. I know the fee's looking quite hefty at£85 million, but you're losing another body. You're losing a quality player. He was very good today. one of the first times he's played out on the right-hand side, so that was a different position for him. He's involved in Isak's goal. I'm not so sure. Unless you can cheekily go to Man City, you can have him, as long as we get Jeremy Doku.

17:49Unless there's a master plan behind it, it can't just be, right, we need that money to sign Barcola. Otherwise, I just think the squad would be light. Yeah.

17:58Dan Thomas:Miss for you, Chaka. Yeah. Absolutely. I just don't think that this Liverpool squad is deep enough to compete on multiple friends, European football, etc., etc. You look at the squad and it doesn't fill you with confidence that they have enough to dance freezing warm bodies to compete at the highest level in all those competitions. However, Liverpool fighting back in this game. What are the positives that you would take away from it, Ali, to kick on for Iriola's team? Well, you don't want to go down in games, but the fact that you continuously come back in matches, that shows you a little something.

18:37That shows you character, if you will. Look, we are right now searching for the positives in Liverpool, but the fact that there is comeback in this team, the fact that there is personality enough so that you can find enough opportunities at the end of matches to go on and get a result, then this may be the sort of thing that kind of propels you forward further on in the competition. because they could have just as easily have lost both of these matches. We could be here, two matches played, zero points for Liverpool. And so the situation could be much worse. And in that sense, then you're like, you know, we've rescued a couple of points.

19:17We're not quite where we need to be, but things are getting better. They need to win matches, though, because if you want to build momentum, the only way you do that is winning matches. 20:35Dan Thomas:Spurs lost to Newcastle 2-0 and this followed up their 3-0 loss to Brentford on the opening day. Anthony Ylanga opened the scoring for the Magpies in the 62nd minute. Johan Wisser scored a second in the 73rd and De Zerbi's struggles continue. Two games, no points, no goals. Here's what he had to say after it. We lost the game and you know in Italian who wins, celebrate and who lose, explain why. And then explain why. Is this the biggest problem for you, the mentality? Yeah, you are right. Yes, for sure. How do you improve that? It's the biggest problem, it's the biggest challenge, it's the biggest target is to find a right mentality.

21:27Unfortunately, you can't buy the mentality in the transfer market or putting many players inside. Football is like a magic thing, you know? You can change many players in one window of transfer market and you can find the balance immediately. Or you need more time. I think we achieve this target. We achieve this goal. I would like to achieve this target quickly as soon as possible because it's crucial to play football.

22:09Dan Thomas:Don's still with us. Shaka, you guys were talking about how much De Zerbi's already finding himself having to say after just a few games into the season. Having to explain to his point, first of all, the Magic Spurs, don't talk about mentality. That has been their Achilles heel, that has been the stereotype, just avoid that. I think for long periods in this game, this is a very even match. Spurs at least matched Newcastle for long spells. They just seemed to run out of gas. I thought Spurs just ran out of gas or maybe couldn't get themselves fully out of third gear. They didn't play with enough pace, particularly later on.

22:48And then this game, I think, was decided in the opening goal. Spurs easily could have had it, as I said during the highlight. I thought it was a penalty. They get that, they go ahead, maybe we're having a different conversation. the other thing to this and while a lot of spurs passing out the back a lot of their linker play was simply outstanding and you could see the deserve the effect on it uh nico gonzalez for newcastle is getting on the ball every single time and pulling all the strings yet in the build up to the goal he's just allowed to drop just in front of the back four marmouche is nowhere to be seen picks out this ball, incredible ball, or writes it to Dedic, and the goal comes from Dedic into Elanga.

Read the full transcript

23:32Why are Spurs just kind of sitting off and allowing Newcastle that kind of freedom, allowing a player like Nico Gonzalez to get on the ball freely, knowing the pace that Newcastle have and how they can hurt you? I just feel that that aspect of the game needs to be improved and quickly. There's a lot that Spurs needed to get right. They're starting to pass the ball out to the back very well. But that incomplete nature of who they are sitting right now will continue to cost them. And while we should focus on the performance on the field from Spurs, and to your point, Shaka, there's an opportunity for Pedro Porro early on in the match in which he's able basically to take an extra touch inside the 18-yard box, and he's about to finish, and then comes a sliding challenge and a great block, and you're thinking that may have been it for Spurs in terms of great opportunities and allowing themselves to create some momentum in the game.

24:27Let me put that to the side for a second. Because it's impossible to ignore Roberto Di Serra here. It's not specific to Italy. I'm just telling you. I know these are breaking news, but it is not specific to Italy or Italians that when you win, you celebrate, and when you lose, you have to explain.

24:47Dan Thomas:Are you sure? Yeah, I'm fairly certain that if you win around the world, you celebrate, and if you lose, then you have to explain. This is not specific to Italy. That's one thing. The second thing. We are in the second match of the season, and this man is already telling you why they're going to stink. He's already telling you. If you listen, he's like, look, you can't change the mentality of a team in one transfer window. So either you need multiple transfer windows or you need more time. Second match of the season, and you're already building an excuse as to why this is not going to work, is the last thing that I would want to hear if I'm a Spurs fan.

25:27Tell me about the game. Tell me why we lost. Tell me specifically what happened. What did we do or why didn't we do? Let's talk about that, the actual things that are happening on the field so that can be addressed. Because this nebulous thing of the mentality that cannot be addressed in a transfer window, anybody can say that. I could have sat in that press conference and said exactly the same thing. It is so undefined, and it doesn't really address the issues of what we saw from Spurs today. Today. Today is a game that was there for them to win, and they lost it. Why did that happen? Give me that explanation.

26:03Don't give me this nonsense that Roberto de Serri was giving us.

26:05Dan Thomas:Yeah, Don, give us that explanation. Why did Spurs lose? I thought Newcastle were the better side. Simple as that. I take Ali's point to an extent but disagree slightly because you could see Roberto Deserbi there almost morphing into Antonio Conte when he sat there and said exactly the same thing about the mentality. The culture at Tottenham needs to change. Their home record over the last two years is appalling. And when you play for a club the size of Tottenham and you play in front of that in front of the stand and the ground they played in today with what, 60 ,000, 70 ,000 inside the stadium you have to have big character to not be mentally weak, to not lose a goal and then go under.

26:49I can't remember the last time when Spurs went behind. They come back and won a game 2-1 or 3-1. So all you have to do, to Xhaka's point, is score the first goal against them and they'll crumble. And I think that's what Dejerbi's saying. He's more or less telling the world. And I hear Ali's point, but I think he's telling the Spurs fans, listen, I can't fix it in two games. I'm going to have to assess what I've got. If the character's not there and we keep on going behind like we did, when we went 1-0 down and then we couldn't come back and we didn't show any character in any fight, well, I'll ship half a dozen of players out and I'll get good character in.

27:21So I do take his point, but as I said, Antonio Conte sat here many years ago, said exactly the same thing. So I think it is on the players. You can't keep going behind and then just going, well, you know, if we had have scored the first goal, we might have won it. Well, if we had have got a penalty, we might have won it. How about show something like Liverpool showed today? When you go behind, come back, fix it.

27:43Dan Thomas:OK, as for Newcastle, Don, maybe there is life after the players that they lost this summer. Amazing. It's amazing, isn't it? I mean, I was all doom and gloom. You lose Anthony Gordon, you lose Bruno, you lose Tonali, you lose Isak, the window before, and you think, what are we doing here? You know, trying to push for second or third in the Prem. All of a sudden, you've got a manager who's come in, Yaisler, and he's a breath of fresh air. The players love him. His signings have been great. To Xhaka's point, I thought Nico was amazing today. He let all the young players in front of him go and play.

28:16Wisser's had a pre-season. I think everyone harshly judged Johan Wisser last year when he got himself, like Alexander Isak, when he never done a pre-season with Newcastle and went to Liverpool short on fitness. Wisser had done the same thing, and then he got injured when he made his move from Brentford to Newcastle. And he struggled last season, and he struggled badly. And I think I sat here, and many Newcastle fans sat here and said, not sure he's good enough. He's had a good World Cup, fantastic World Cup, a really strong pre-season now you're watching a number nine that looks like a completely different player so does Alanga Alanga was chatting on TV here how he says he's confident the manager believes in him, he trusts him and I think you've got a manager who's just so enthusiastic and all the young players are feeding off that and they've started so well

29:01Dan Thomas:So what's the ceiling, Xhaka? Yesterday I said 13s or something really short I think they keep everybody fit I still don't see them finishing top six. I'll push myself maybe to eighth at this point. But they certainly have been playing well. And again, I'll double down on maybe triple because Don mentioned Nico Gonzalez and the role that he played. But I go through the squad. All right. Ilanga and Vrissa, who had horrendous seasons last season, have started clearly with something to prove. And you're seeing it. And then outside of that, while Don mentioned the players you lose, you've got Harvey Barnes, Willock, Hall, Tiawan and Botman through the middle.

29:49You've got Ramsey Murphy who have just been so reliable. They are not going to set the world on fire. They're not going to set the house on fire. You know exactly the kind of performance, solid professional performance that you're going to get out of them. You add in that quality of Nico Gonzalez. You add in Lang and Vista with something to prove. Now, all of a sudden, you're looking at a decent team here. And that's all Newcastle have done. With all the star power of everybody else, everybody just knows their roles and are sticking to it. And it's incredible to kind of witness. It's a big swing, Shaq, from yesterday to today.

30:25Yeah, it was. It was. It was a big performance. You said 13th or 14th yesterday. It was a big performance. And now we're going. You said, well, I'm not going to put him in the top six. Well, I hope not. It's a big performance. It's a big performance. it's a big performance let's not get carried away let's no let's I disagree Ali let's all get carried away

30:43Dan Thomas:a little bit of recency bias it's okay or just bias in general anyway there we go a win for Newcastle and we've got more Premier League action to discuss on tomorrow's show Chelsea taking on Brighton these are the predictions Don, Frank and Ali going for a Chelsea win Xhaka and Craig both going for a 2-2 draw Craig and Frank will be on tomorrow's show ESPN FC. Be sure to join them as they look back on that game in the Premier League and many more too. Right now when you buy more carpet at the Home Depot you save more. 32:12Dan Thomas:Atleti beat Sevilla 3-1 at the Sanchez Pijuan. Diego Simeone's men racing off to a 3-0 lead in the first half. Took their foot off the pedal somewhat in the second. Miguel Sierra pulled one back for Sevilla, but Atleti held on for all three points and got the win that they needed against Sevilla. Here with Adamola Lukman, one of the stars of the show tonight. Adamola, after everything that's been going on in Madrid, what did it feel like, what did it mean to come here to Seville and put on the show that you did? No, I think it was important for us to continue in the way that we've started the season.

32:52I think three games, seven points is positive, so keep on trying to improve in those moments, keep on getting better as a team, So, yeah, winning, yeah, it's the most important. How is it playing for Diego Simeone at the moment? Because your coach during the week almost apologised to you, saying he was almost having to play you out of position at the moment without a number nine playing. I think playing under the mister is great. I'm learning a lot, trying to improve, of course, and, yeah, just learning from him and his staff is important for me to keep on improving and just to help the team. That's the most important.

33:29Dan Thomas:Adrian Healy joining us now from the Sanchez-Biquan give us a bit more of the feeling in the mix zone and the surroundings afterwards after this win Adrian if you can Yeah Kay it's tempting to call it a statement win isn't it but it wasn't that I mean Atletico Madrid came out and turned on the style and totally dominated the first half but the problem was I think everyone recognises this was a Seville team that were not up to par certainly not what they produced in the first couple of weeks which proved to be a bit of a mirage, and Atletico Madrid took full advantage. And then, as you said, workmanlike in the second half, rather than powering on and really making a statement win, they just decided to batten down the hatches and protect what they had.

34:11So I think the mood amongst the players was, you know, that was efficient. Job done, on we go, no fuss, no worries about not having Julian here, no worries about Saul off being here. We've got goals in this team, and certainly they proved that. And it was a great night for Alex Baena as well as Luckman and Lee as well.

34:31Dan Thomas:Was there anything mentioned about Julian Alvarez that you heard afterwards? Obviously, you asked Adam Ola Luckman some of the situation at the moment. Was there anything else mentioned? No, they have been very, very well drilled to stay right away from any talk about Julian Alvarez. I mean, you heard Diego Simeone during the week saying, yeah, listen, this isn't affecting us at all. And you want to believe that, but deep down, they must be churning a little bit inside, wondering if this is going to get done. I mean, Julian Alvarez was such a big part of the team. And seeing what they can do without him, what could they do with him, is the tantalising question.

35:09If he does get brought back. But that professionalism, no. No one was going to say anything about what was going on back in Madrid.

35:21Dan Thomas:You had a feeling they'd get the win today, Ali. You were right. You said it would be 2-1. You were very close. Well, thank you, Kay. I'll take that as a win. Also, I don't miss... Look, I would love to have my hair from the younger days. That's long gone. And I don't really care, to be honest with you. But when I see Ademola Lugman and his haircut, I wish I had hair because maybe I could pull it off. Ah, nah. Huh? Nah. But carry on. I wish. I said I wish I could. I wish. I appreciate your wishful thinking, but okay. As it pertains to Atletico Madrid, very encouraged by the first 45 minutes. Very encouraged.

36:01Almost to the point to where I was like, oh, wait a minute. Look at this team. New players, new personality, new talent in the attack. Canning Lee doing well. Alex Baena carrying the momentum from what was a very good World Cup for him and being a productive player for Atletico Madrid which he wasn't last season. I don't think Diego Simeone actually figured out what to do with Alex Baena last season. So far this year, no issues, no problem. The guy's on the field. He's going to score goals. Ademola Lukman, is he playing out of position or not? Who knows? He's still effective. He's still scoring goals.

36:36Giuliano Simeone, who his dad said he was going to play down the middle today, that was a lie because Simeone played on the right-hand side, but the level of activity between him and Llorente was outstanding, especially in the first half. Why am I focusing on the first half because the second half was really discouraging from Atlético Madrid. While I understand that is the natural instinct of teams to say, well, we scored three goals. We're not going to take any chances. We're just going to sit here. We'll go on the counter when we can. We'll score a fourth and a fifth if we can get there, but we're not going to give anything away.

37:04Atlético Madrid take that to the extreme. They take five steps back and then allow all the initiative to be with Sevilla. A team that was outplayed over the course of the first half. It was a kick on the backside. It was a whoop side. It was a whooping in the first half. Yes? We can agree on that. And then Atletico Madrid say, you know, we don't like. We don't like whipping their backside. We're going to give them a chance to make this close, to make this closer than it needs to be. And that attitude has to change. And indeed, they're going to challenge at the top of La Liga. If they're going to push Real Madrid and Barcelona, it has to be a far more aggressive, a far more positive, a far more ambitious attitude from Atletico Madrid than just, we've done the job, we'll let them have the ball.

37:51I think there's more for this team to give. I think there is more for this team to give, but maybe I'm wrong.

37:56Dan Thomas:Someone who did a fine job for us today is Adrian Healy, who we usually do see popping up in Mexico, in Miami, in Sevilla. It feels there's a pattern emerging here, Adrian. Yes, the tropics, Kay, the tropics. October, when it's 90 degrees, 90 degrees, maybe the high 80s, that's when it can pop up into a role like this. Miami, Seville, maybe a little Valencia next week. We'll see. But I'm enjoying the temperature. When is 90 degrees, said the Englishman, I always hear. Well, yeah. An age-old moral. Yeah, great stuff. We're the only ones mad enough to go out now. That is true also. Okay, Adrian, thank you so much.

38:42Dan Thomas:We're looking forward to hearing a lot more from you throughout the season. La Liga on the way for you this weekend. And on Monday, too, Real Madrid against Malaga coming up on Sunday morning. And that is followed up by Barcelona taking on Rio on Monday, 3 p.m. Eastern. You can catch those games on the app and on Deportes. This episode is brought to you by Facebook. So you were scrolling on Marketplace. And there it was. the bike you'd been searching for. You sent a message, and it turned out the seller was super chatty, kind of funny, and an avid cyclist. The next thing you know, you're in a cycling crew.

39:22Well, a community cycling group.

39:24Dan Thomas:The thing about Facebook, you might find more than what you're looking for. From a browse to a bike ride, this summer, find more on Facebook. Hey Chicago, class it up with Crocs. You know back to school is coming in fast. So why wait to find your new fave footwear? Step into a local Croc store and step into your new look. Try it. Style it. Make it yours. Because the right pair doesn't just show up. It shows off. First day fits, handled. Walk out ready for whatever's next. Visit your nearest Croc store today.

40:05Dan Thomas:Oh, look at that. This bird gets west from. Wait a minute, how did this make the show? There's three Americans in the middle. It wasn't one of them who scored this, though. This is Will Langshear. No. If anybody ever wonders what an Ali Moreno goal is like, this is it. This is it. It absolutely is. Yes, not much more than that. 65th minute, however, a bit of a scary, hairy moment. 65th minute. Jimmy J. Morgan. Scary for who? For the Borough fans and the American audience, We're all hoping that the American boys are doing well with their new team. But that boy, Langshear, is there for the rebound here.

40:48You might as well just do that.

40:51Dan Thomas:87th minute. Go on, Alfie Jones. Get it in. Where's Alfie Jones? There he is. We found Alfie. Let's try to keep it professional, okay? We will keep it professional. What you guys do need to know is that Aidan Morris did start this game. Max Afton came on in this game and so too did Sebastian Berhalter, which is why we're showing you it. Yeah, yeah. It's a whole Football Americas angle. We knew that. We need them to keep winning because Football Americas might just send a team out to Middlesbrough to speak to the boys and I know just the woman to help them with that. Oh, wow. Yeah, boy. We've put this whole campaign together so that you can go home?

41:30Dan Thomas:Yeah, I'll go on Football Americas as well. How many times have you been in Football Americas?

41:42Dan Thomas:Welcome in to the latest edition of Extra Time. I'll have those back, please. Thank you very much. I thought that was awesome. I don't know. You put it over here. All right. All right. Don Hutchison's joining us as well to answer your questions. Thank you so much for sending them in. Do you think your plan is going to work, though? My plan to get to Middlesbrough? Yes. Welcome in, Don Hutchison, another Northeasterner here. Well, let me just tell you this. Kay's in charge. Kay's in charge of logistics now. Let's hear this. Go ahead. Football Americas is very interested in any U.S. players, of course, playing abroad.

42:17Dan Thomas:And there are three right now at my hometown club, Middlesbrough. Yes. Okay? Correct. Big story. Yes. Well, biggish. One of the producers of Football Americas told me. Yes. Hmm. Might be a good idea to get you there if this continues, going well. Just saying, I didn't bring, like, he said it to me. And of course, I would be able to open those doors like Shaka does in Newcastle, you know, if we have to send a team out there. Okay, but who are you opening the doors for? Because this feels like this is you going to Middlesbrough. Me, myself and I. It feels like you opening a play-dough. Yes. It feels like you opening my door.

43:00I'm a window seat, please.

43:03Dan Thomas:Anyone want to join? Oh yes see, I'll come here. You might not be allowed in no time. Sunderland, Newcastle. I'm all right down there. I have questions. Because if you're going to participate for Football Americas, you should be a host of Football Americas. But what if I'm bringing the middle brangle? A little inside info. You've got to understand the culture of Football Americas. Yes. No, I'm not going to be pushing any of the hosts out of their seat. No, no, no, I know that, but it would help so that the people that follow FUEL AMERICAS get to know you better. So you got to come and do some FUEL AMERICAS shows.

43:41Just, you know, just to be a presence. I'm not against it. Tell you what, come Thursday, I'll steal.

43:48Dan Thomas:But there has to be a two-way thing, chef. Who wants boots on the ground? Two-way thing. Who wants boots on the ground, didn't you, Kate? Say that again, Don? I'm saying you want boots on the ground, didn't you? You want to be on the ground. exactly exactly you want to be in borough it looks like she wants chicken parma on the on the ground see i could take the boys out for a chicken parma all over it all right um let's get the first question checker still sticking with liverpool finishing second and newcastle 13th or 14th uh no next question no no no no no no no What? What? Okay, what are you most discouraged about?

44:33Like, what don't you think is going to happen? Um, with who? Between the two options that you have. Liverpool's squad, I just feel it's too thin. I feel it's too thin now. Hold on, but it wasn't too thin yesterday when you said they were going to finish second? No, but they're selling Gakpo now, so that's just... That just ruined all my plans. But Barcola's coming in. Yeah, but... Jagpo's key to my prediction.

45:02Jagpo's key. Right? Take my word for it. Wow. He is reversing. He is reversing for fun.

45:13Dan Thomas:And Newcastle 13-14? Can we move that up a few spots? I'll go up a few spots. I'll go... 8-9. Oh! 8-9. Late night. Late night. Don, it took... Those algorithms are off, shuck. That wasn't algorithms. That was just a bad night's sleep. Wait, now you're giving predictions without your algorithm? Yeah, that was an algorithm beast. That was an algorithm beast. I was all gut instinct. Okay.

45:51Let's move on. Move on, kid. Ask the question.

45:54Dan Thomas:Just to let you know, now that you're the expert and enthusiast of Cody Gagpo, we'll put the question that's coming later about him to you. Okay, Don, it took Iriola 10 games to get a win at Bournemouth. How long will Liverpool fans give him? I think they'll give him a long time. I think the Liverpool fans are very intelligent. They know the manager needs to be backed. They're getting backed in terms of the quality that Ali was talking about before in the show. with the front men, but they've got to be backed with building a team. You look at Arsenal and what Arteta's done in five years. He's built a team full of men that are willing to, you know, blood, sweat and tears for three points and bodies on the line.

46:36I don't see that with Liverpool. I heard Steven Gerrard tonight talking about how Liverpool are too nice to play against. He feels as though there's no spite in the team, and I totally agree. We've been saying the same things. They've always had it in the middle of the park. whether you go all the way back to Jimmy Case or Graham Souness, Steven Gerrard, Steve McMahon, Fabinho, they've always had that player in there that you don't want to play against. If you're playing against Liverpool now, if you rock up like Nottingham Forest and you rock up at Anfield, got Ipswich next Friday night, that'll be a test away from home.

47:07They're easy to play against, whether you're having a bit more possession or we're going to hit them on the break, they don't sort of stop any counters. In terms of the fans giving the manager time, I think they'll give him loads of time. It's not on him. It's on the sporting directors and Richard Hughes.

47:22Dan Thomas:Okay, actually I should probably ask you this Ale, because it comes from Xhaka I think, because it's Xhaka's vacation planner at Give Xhaka More Vacay Days. Not really hiding it there, Xhaka. Peral, what does Cody Gakpo bring to Manchester City? How does he fit into the starting eleven? Are you the president of the fan club? No, that was just for the last question. That was just for one question. You're no longer the president? I've moved on. I've moved on. You turned the page on Cody Gagel. I've moved on. Yeah, it's interesting, actually, as to what he would bring to Manchester City. We're seeing, I think, within Liverpool, how important he has been for Liverpool in that you think about consistent performers in that front line at Liverpool, certainly over the last couple of seasons, and I think Cody Gagpo has to be in that conversation, if not the one player that you would think, you know what, this guy you can rely on.

48:20I don't know if he's going to score a bunch of goals or not, but at the very least, you know he's going to give you productive work, game in, game out. Manchester City, I think, would get the same sort of performances from Cody Gagpo, but I don't know where he gets on the field. We were talking yesterday, okay, if Ryan Cherky is going to stay on the field and Phil Foden is going to stay on the field and then you have Zemeño and then you have Erling Haaland you're kind of running out of places so where is it that the space is available for Cody Gagpo to break into that starting lineup and be and I didn't even I didn't even mention players that did not feature yesterday and so I think I think he would be a nice piece to have, but I don't know that he plays ahead of Zemeño.

49:09He certainly doesn't play ahead of Erling Haaland because he doesn't play centrally. And then Ryan Cherky and Phil Foden, Ryan Cherky, given the performance that he had yesterday, he doesn't get ahead of Ryan Cherky, and so I'm not sure as to where is it that he fits in. And if I'm Cody Gakpo, and if I'm the president of his fan club, Xhaka Hislop, I would be a little concerned in terms of, okay, what is it that his outlook is with matches the city? First kid at Liverpool. Told him.

49:35Dan Thomas:But then what does that mean for you? Carry on, carry on. Just carry on, okay. Ale, rank these legendary South American strikers in their prime. Gabriel Batistuta, Alvaro Recova, and Ivan Zamorano. Gabriel Batistuta, Batigol first. Ivan Zamorano second. And Alvaro Recova a distant third. A distant third. Because Alvaro Recova wasn't exactly an out-and-out striker. As it pertains to an out-and-out striker, I'm going to say Batigol. He was a dominant player in his time. I don't know if he was always recognized as such worldwide. But it should have been. It should have been. Absolutely should have been.

50:13And just a physical presence that I think was superior to that of Ivan Zamorano. Do not discount Ivan Zamorano's career and what he was able to do, both Real Madrid and Inter. Certainly a player that also featured in the game that we watched today with Sevilla. He was an important player for Sevilla as well. teammate of Diego Simeone at Sevilla, mind you. I'm bringing it all full circle with Sevilla, Atlético, Madrid. In any case, yeah, I would say Batigol, Sam Morano, and then further back, much further back, I'm going to recover.

50:46Dan Thomas:Kind of like Newcastle in Xhaka's standings, much further down. Yes, well, now... 8-9 now. Don, yesterday the guys determined that Xhaka was quite a normal guy, despite being a goalkeeper. Do you agree? And who is the craziest goalkeeper you knew? He once told a story of John Burridge punching you strikers in the head to warm up. Yeah, I mean, he's legendary. And the stories that Budgie Burrows, John Burridge, and everyone tells over the years are quite legendary. And it would never, ever happen these days. The craziest I ever played with was Bruce Grobbler. I mean, what a guy on the pitch. light years beyond his time because if Grobbelov's playing now he's the sweeper keeper he looks a million dollars however when Brucie was playing in the 90s he thought he was a number nine so when Brucie used to get it he used to take everyone on dribble into midfield go past a couple of players try and score a goal or set up someone he was nuts on the pitch.

51:48Brucie away from the pitch life and soul of the party I don't think I've ever seen a man with so many bar tricks party tricks in my life. Handstands on the way into a bar, carrying a pint with centrifugal force, full swing like that and just give you a pint without swilling a drop. He was amazing. Did he say pants down? Hands down. No, hands down. That's quite a trick. That was quite a trick. That was done trick. That was done. Wow. He could give you a pint, Ali. He would go to the bar Ali, he would go to the bar get you a pint of your choice whizz it round in the air he used to call it centrifugal force so he didn't spill a drop like a crazy man and hand you your pint and there wouldn't be a drop spilt Can you do that, Shaq?

52:43Dan Thomas:Can you do that? I wonder if he could do that with a Shirley Temple Absolutely not But she was my goalkeeper coach at Newcastle, by the way Shirley Temple but he deservedly known as the courageous goalkeeper I've ever lived deservedly lovely stuff, ok, thank you for sending in all of your questions today I'm normal by the way I hope you all see that very normal remarkably so thanks so much for sending in your questions oh boy
