Key claims
City’s rotations still produced a 3-0 win; Arsenal’s title is “on them,” though goal differential and City’s earlier Everton collapse matter. VAR’s disallowed West Ham goal was criticized as inconsistent and overly focused on Raya’s arm. West Ham likely go down; Spurs have a path. Real Madrid’s Florentino Pérez presser was “bewildering” and media-focused; Negreira case is treated as a key issue. Celtic should beat Hearts to win the Scottish title.
Notable examples
Phil Foden two assists vs Palace; Callum Wilson’s VAR-disallowed stoppage-time goal (foul on Raya); Everton collapse (3 goals in 13 minutes); Alavés 1-0 over Barcelona; Hearts needing a draw vs Celtic; Inter’s Coppa Italia double; Bayern-linked Anthony Gordon; Liverpool backing Arne Slot amid “risk.”

0:45Hello everyone and welcome into our ESPN FC studios for the latest edition of the show. I'm Alexis Nunes alongside Stevie Nichol and Alejandro Moreno. We're going to kick things off in the Premier League, of course, because Manchester City and Pep Guardiola would rotate a lot of the 11 as they took on Crystal Palace. but that really did nothing to affect the outcome as Phil Foden put in a good shift with two assists and Manchester City won 3-0. All right, let's bring in Jan Agaf-Tjortov for this one. Jan, Manchester City making a couple of rotations. As I said, Crystal Palace, I mean, they probably have their eyes on their European final to think about, but City won this one without any trouble, really.
1:26and imagine when Crystal Palace is playing Arsenal and they make a rotation for their final what do you think Manchester City will say then for the last game at Arsenal so that's quite interesting I wasn't surprised based on what Pep Guardiola has done before but still when you see the likes of Haaland or Xerchi and everybody sitting on a bench you're thinking wow do they dare to do this But, I mean, Pep Guardiola has done this for ages. And he's done the same thing again. And it paid out today. 3-0. Wow. It's the end of the season. It's unbelievable. I wish... I get my Norwegian to lift the trophy anyway, so I don't care which team it will be.
2:09But it's great. I would like to see the battle all the way to the end. And it seems that we get that. Seems like we could get that. Stevie, you were keeping a close eye on this one. What did you think of City? well it's not a surprise that they beat Crystal Palace by three Crystal Palace have been on the beach for a long time they were safe a long time ago they're concentrating on Europe and in a lot of ways it's actually really sad that the last game of the season that will probably be the one that really counts Crystal Palace are going to have half a team out and at the end of the day nobody can complain about that because every team, pretty much every team in the Premier League at some stage has been rotating and playing half a team.
2:53So Manchester City can't really say too much about it. Nobody can. That's what happens these days. And unfortunately for the Premier League, on the last day of the season, it's kind of going to be ruined a little bit because it's going to be Palace reserves against Arsenal. Alec, just looking at the remaining schedules, what are you saying? It's the feeling that I shared with Stevie while we were watching the game. Arsenal couldn't possibly, couldn't possibly blow this. This would be the biggest problem, Joe, wouldn't it? They couldn't possibly, could they? It just, I mean, you look at that schedule and you say, all right, well, if you were to pick two teams to play against, if you were Arsenal this late in the season, you would say, well, Burnley, sure, why not?
3:44Give me that. and then half a team of Crystal Palace or a quarter of a team of Crystal Palace or whatever is left of Crystal Palace. And it feels like it's all so neatly wrapped up for Arsenal that, again, it's on them. Yeah. The only thing that I would say is that, if you notice, the goal differential has now gone in the direction of Manchester City, has tipped over towards Manchester City. Does that apply a little bit of pressure on Arsenal? Because if indeed somehow they drop points, then it really is in the hands of Manchester City. Maybe. I just don't see the scenario, or it's hard to picture a scenario by which Arsenal are not able to get through these last two games, unless that pressure that we keep talking about is far too much for them and this team falls apart.
4:40That's the only way that I think this gets away from Arsenal. Jan? I would like to go back in the German Bundesliga. I just dropped out of my head now which year it was. But remember when Bayer Leverkusen had to go to Unterhaching. And they only had to beat Unterhaching in the last game of the season. And Unterhaching was like a part of Munich. It was a small suburb of, not even a suburb, it was a village close to Bayer Munich. and they lost. They lost. And after the game, the Unterhaching players went with bus to Bayern Munich who won their game and celebrating a championship with them. So it's still possible, Al.
5:22It's still possible because it's football. It's still possible. They would probably get those goals against Burnley. Probably. Probably. But then they're going to play Crystal Palace second team. We've seen it before. We can see it again. But of course, it's advantage Arsenal. It's advantage that tight decision in the last game. It's against West Ham. It is also advantage Arsenal because, and that's important, because Manchester City played at Everton, totally dominated the first half, and then managed to concede three goals in 13 minutes and just somehow managed to get the point there. So I think that with the end of a season, over a season, the best team win, and it may be Arsenal.
6:18But not yet, Al. Can Jan say Unterhaken again? Actually, I want to know if Stevie can say it. Stevie, can you pronounce Unterhaken? I can say Unterhaken. Oh, Bundesliga Stevie. Bring it in. We Scots have got a... You do have that. You do have that. You know who looked like he had it back today too? Phil Foden. He looked like he had a really good game today, Stevie. Do you know why he had to have a good game today? Because that will stick in the mind of Thomas Tuchel or whoever was at that game to watch him. Because Tuchel will be watching this guy. He's got so much talent. It's frightening. And for him not to be at the World Cup seems crazy.
6:56But at the same time, England have got three, four players that could fill that spot. So it was huge for him. to actually show himself today. And if Thomas Tuchel thinks the second one's an assist as well, even better for Foden. Jan, he did himself a world of good today. Yeah, he did. But still, it's worrying time for the English football team because there is a lot of key players out of form. Phil Foden has been known for some reason, maybe a reason we don't know, that he's not having a good season. Bellingham, Saka hasn't had a great season, getting a bit into form. But it's not a go when Phil Foden, we know his talent, he's been one of the most talented players England have had the last three, four years.
7:44But for England now, it's 30 days to the World Cup. It's not enough to have one good game against Crystal Palace and think you're going to win the World Cup. But it's good for the kid. He had some great, great actions today. And that assist he had there, I mean, that was brilliant. That would be in all kind of highlights of this season because that was a brilliant, brilliant assist. Stevie, if you were Thomas Tuchel, you are the manager of this panel, and it comes down to you having to pick between Phil Foden, who, as both of you have mentioned, hasn't been all that great, but seems to be having a little bit of a late revival, and Cole Palmer, who I talk about somebody who has had an underwhelming season and hasn't really delivered on what we thought would be a great season for him.
8:29Which one would you take? similar profile players, who do you take to the World Cup? Well, you know, I think if there's one thing that maybe was in Phil Foden's favour is the fact that he's not had a long, tough season, has he? I mean, we're going to go to the World Cup at the end of the season where everybody's going to complain about having had a long domestic season, regardless of what country you've been in, and not feeling fresh and sharp. So maybe that goes in Phil Foden's favour. But it's actually not that easy an answer. Nope. Because neither of them have convinced anybody that they're anywhere close to being the players that we know they can or should be.
9:15So one of them is going to go. Who's your pick? Well, you're the manager. I think right now I would maybe take Foden over Palmer. All right. You're the manager. You're the boss. You're the manager. You're the gaffer. You make the tough calls. Well, obviously, speaking of managers, Jan Pep Guardiola, just judging by his 11 and the rotation, I'm pretty sure it had a lot to do with the fact that City have a final to play this weekend in the FA Cup final. If City do go on and beat Chelsea and win the FA Cup final, but they fall short in the title race and Arsenal win the Premier League, how do we judge their season?
9:54Well, it's interesting. There are so many things that we need to judge on Manchester City at the moment. I'm at City or seeing their games more or less every week. I try to pick Pep's brain if he's going to stay or he won't stay. I have no clue. What we'll do with Manchester City, I mean, there is a key game in Bournemouth. We know all about that. I think that when you see the first part of the season, Arsenal were the clear better team. But I've been impressed what Pep has managed to get him back as close as he has with Arsenal. And we can say, although there have been some funny recruitments at Manchester City, they haven't hit the target by all of the recruitments, but somehow Pep has now managed to kind of get the team a bit younger, get him going.
10:45You have a Doku, you have a Semenya, although he had a period of time where he wasn't that good and so on. Remember, he played more or less all the time without Rodri. He's been in there some games. Erling Haaland is still scoring his goals. Phil Foden hasn't been even there. Gavadiol, Diaz. So I think that is a decent season by Manchester City. And if they should end up now getting that trophy as well, I think they will consider themselves as a quite good season and think that they started a bit too late to get the Premier League. And they will be annoyed. They will be annoyed with some of the results, especially that Everton, when they were so close and they were in advantage.
11:28And we see how vulnerable that result will be for them. If somebody had said the previous Christmas, you know when City fell off the planet? If somebody had said the following season you're going to win the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup, you're going to push the winners and be a point behind them at the end of the season, I think everybody would go, really? How's that going to happen? So if you look at it from that point of view, it's actually been a really good season. But City just a victim of their own success in this one because, you know, OK, good, or just two domestic trophies that aren't the title or the Champions League isn't really City.
12:07Right. And Stevie, when, last Christmas, or the Christmas before that, let me just go to that, this past Christmas, City were not even in the competition with Arsenal at that point. It felt like Arsenal were going to run away with this. And now, Manchester City does get help from Arsenal because they started collapsing. But then, give credit to Manchester City in finding, somehow, with all their issues, with all their concerns that they have defensively, how exposed they are in transition, how exposed they are at times in the midfield, how their possession is not nearly as clean as it has been in years past.
12:42And yet, here they are with a chance. In my estimation, not a great chance, but with a chance nonetheless. So give them credit because it felt like they were not even in the competition to begin with, certainly at the turn of the new year. And they made it into a race. However, to your point, Alexis, the standard for Manchester City is much higher than that. And I don't think they have met that standard just yet. They may be on their way to getting back there, but we're not quite there yet. Are you looking to rebound from your high interest credit card debt? Alright, well let's push on now because we have to talk about the goal that never was that we're still talking about. Yes, indeed. Remember that Callum Wilson thought he had rescued a point for West Ham up against Arsenal in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Unfortunately for him though VAR intervened, disallowed the goal because of a foul on David Raya. Now, we all know that the full conversation from VAR has been published.
14:52Everybody sat down and listened to every second of the five-minute conversation. So now, Jan, what did you think of it? Well, I was at the game. I was working and I was sitting next to the Arsenal people, the communication guys and girls down there. And you can imagine the emotions that were going all over the place at the London Stadium. What is interesting is that VAR, we can discuss this all the way, and there are so many examples that that hasn't been given. I think we have to be quite clear. It was a free kick. It was a free kick on the goalkeeper. And I think that what people don't accept is the lack of consistency.
15:37I mean, that is the main thing. I mean, wrong decisions can happen. The interesting thing on the pitch, and after the game, when I was finished, I interviewed Arteta, and he was full of emotions. And I got outside, and I was thinking of the thing that, if it's a clear and obvious on-field decision. So we have to change that. But it's quite easy. As a graph, it's quite easy. as longer it goes for every 10 seconds 20 seconds half a minute minute two minutes it's getting less and less clear and obvious isn't it and i think that is that is the main thing here because if it's clear and obvious just sort it out although i i know it's easy to to jump on the train to say var is this and the officials are are that but you also do understand that it's a big decision to be made because the VAR people can read a table too.
16:34They know that this decision that they had to make was unbelievable. And the West Ham players, I was standing there in the tunnel when the West Ham players came in and the referees came in. Let's put it this way. I'm not allowed to say everything they said on this show. So I won't say that. But the main thing for them, for the West Ham players, they were throwing out examples during these seasons that they've been given against them. So why should it now not go for us? So they were furious about this. So is this inconsistency? Is it possible to make it consistent? I'm not sure. I mean, we've been a lot around in football and the consistency is one of the hardest things to get in football, especially football, but a lot of sports.
17:21Stevie now that you listen to it as well what do you make of it? Well it's no surprise that the head of the referees union backs his men you know all he talked about was the foul on the goalkeeper how it was the main foul how it was the one that concerned But what did you think of the VAR conversation that was going on? You know it's very difficult to make head on a tailor who's it almost feels like nobody's in charge of it it's almost like they're all throwing ideas out and who's going to come up with the answer Now clearly at the end of the day The referee did But I just I just I wish I wish they wouldn't And listen as a coach I had to deal with Referees And referee Not adjudicators But the people in charge of the referees On a Monday morning Coming out with some nonsense That backs the man Yeah And so That's what you're going to get Soon as the referee makes the final decision And the game's over you can bet your bottom dollar they're going to back him up on a very very odd occasion where they say oh we got it wrong but 99 times out of 100 they back the referee up and so to be honest when I'm listening to referees talking I'm listening to Howard with the explanation I very rarely listen to it very deeply because you can tell yourself your own eyes don't lie to you they want to back the referee up by saying it's a foul on the goalie that it is but they don't want to talk about the free kick on Pablo who fouled the goalie, which, in my opinion, would lead up to him fouling the goalkeeper.
18:57So don't try and tell me which one's more important. Yeah, and that I think, what you just said there at the end, Stevie, I think is the most important part of that. From that conversation, you get the sense that the VAR officials that are talking to each other, and then from the explanation from Howard Webb, their priority was focusing on the arm on Raya. And that was the foul that they wanted to put in front of the referee, the on-field official. And there was a hint, sort of a tinge, a touch of saying, hey, but what's going on around? And it was almost as if like, eh, nothing to see here, nothing to see.
19:38The tone. Yes, the tone was very much of, don't focus on that so much, focus on this. And that is the part that I'm kind of like, wait a minute. What can we all agree on? Yes, because if you look at the play and you start evaluating, my assessment would be, if I had been the on-field official, as I'm addressing the crowd, is, look, yeah, there is a foul on David Raya. No question about that. So we're not even going to look at Declan Rice. Foul on David Raya. But before then, Leandro Trozar was hugging Pablo. So while that's a foul here, that's a foul there too. No goal, but there is a penalty in favor of West Ham.
20:20And then that would have created some drama, but we didn't get there. That would have been my assessment because that's what my eyes told me. But it felt like they were so focused on the arm across Raya that they didn't think anything else was important enough, and that, I think, is concerning. Because you can't just grab people like this and dictate that that doesn't impact the play. Of course it does. It impacts how Pablo is able to jump. So has he been impeded? Yes. Just the same way that he impeded David Raya, Pablo was also impeded. But that wasn't nearly as important as the foul on Raya.
20:57That's the part that I have an issue with. Well, of course, that disallowed goal set West Ham back in their fight for survival because they are now still two points behind Tottenham Hotspur. Believe it or not, Spurs still not 100 % safe, but I suppose momentum, we can say, is swinging in their favour. Jan, when we talk about the relegation battle, who do you see going down? I think that West Ham will go down. I think that David Moyes, in the last game of the season, in the form of successful West Ham manager won't help them enough. I think that the Serbi has managed to make Tottenham look like a football team.
21:37So I think that that's an advantage Spurs and I think they will save themselves. You guys agree? Well, Spurs will get a point in Chelsea. And that means Newcastle will beat West Ham and Newcastle. That means it's over. Because the goal difference is too big. So I don't see any way how West Ham stay up. I don't see it at all. It's also hard to picture emotionally West Ham getting up from what had to have been the excitement of time the game lay, thinking that you have done it and then you haven't done it. And now you feel as if though things are getting away from you. And it's not just that Spurs win a game.
22:17It's also the fact that you don't seem to be getting the breaks. And emotionally that does something to a team. And here's the other reality. They're not very good. And that's the most powerful reality. Bottom line, they're not very good. I don't see them winning their last two games. Maybe they need our Xhaka Hissat back in between the sticks. We'll see if that helps. All right, well, as we said, Manchester City have bigger fish to fry this weekend as they go up against Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley. We've sent Dan and Craig over there to cause some trouble. Make sure to tune in Saturday, 10 a.m.

Born in the trades, built for visionaries ready to stop operating and start automating.
23:40Service Titan, AI for the trades. Right, in case you missed it, and trust me, you didn't want to miss it, Florentino Perez, the Real Madrid president gave a sensational and very feisty presser. Well, earlier today I asked Sid Lowe for his reaction to it all. Well, let's start with the reaction during the sensational presser, shall we? Because I think that almost tells you everything. And you're right, the word is bewilderment. So in the press room at Valdebebas, you have two lines of Real Madrid directors who are there watching this happen. and then obviously a room full of journalists, TV cameras and so on.
24:18And genuinely, within about three or four minutes, everyone was kind of looking at each other thinking, is this actually happening? Is this really where this is going to go? And it kept on going and it kind of swayed between moments when it was kind of almost funny and other moments in which it was just confusing and baffling and not always very pleasant either. So much so that there was a moment in which, In fact, there were two moments in which the communications staff at Real Madrid tried to bring an end to the press conference. And Florentino carried on because he wanted to keep talking. Now, that's not to say that he wanted to ask the questions because really and truly the questions that he was asked, he didn't answer those.
24:57They were just leap-off points for him to then go back into the same discourse because it was very, very circular. It was very, very repetitive. It was confusing for us and it sounded quite confused from him as well. And he just kind of kept on going on. The second time they tried to stop him, he said, oh I'm not doing anything else this afternoon and besides I'm enjoying myself. It was really genuinely extraordinary. I don't think I've been in a press conference except possibly going all the way back to the infamous Puerto Amo press conference from Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho way back in 2011 I think it was.
25:31I don't think I've been in a press conference that has really been quite like it. He came in ostensibly to announce plans for there to be presidential elections at Real Madrid but didn't actually tell us when they were going to be. Didn't tell us what the process was for them when he was forced to answer that he said well you know whenever 10 15 days whenever it is and he basically used it as a chance to say my enemies come on then come out show yourself i'll take you on and of course the biggest enemies he had were in there in the room with him and it was us the media well you can bet that this presser was the focus of all the headlines in the Spanish papers today.
26:12Marca says desconcierto. That means bewilderment because that's exactly how we all were feeling after we saw that presser. Well, it was also the topic of discussion at Arbeloa's presser today.
26:28I'm not really here to comment on the president's press conference either. I believe that any Madridista who listened to our president yesterday would strongly agree on the need to defend the interest of Real Madrid and its members. Specifically, the fact that Real Madrid is consistently treated in a manner very, very different from every other club in the world.
26:53Yes, absolutely. After all, we all know what has been going on for over 20 years, at least as far as we know, because I'm sure there are things we don't know about as well. Ultimately, what we would all love to see is a resolution to a case in which the number too official within the referee establishment was receiving payments from a football club. I believe that by any reasonable standard, this is neither legal nor does it make any sense whatsoever to those of us involved in this competition. Indeed, it seems almost unbelievable that Real Madrid is the only club willing to stand up for the rule of law in football.
27:30And well, I believe that is a sentiment shared by every single Madridista. Well, a true enemy of Florentino Perez, Sid Lowe, is back with us as he's been pitch side for us on La Liga. Do you see, Sid, just listening to everything unfold, we cannot even believe that Florentino Perez has even had more to say today doing another interview. Now, to be honest, I can believe it, and I think there's a very obvious reason for it, And that is that because the press conference didn't go particularly well, and I think because the response to it wasn't particularly good, I think it made sense for Florentino to effectively have another try, have another go, and to say some of the things that he either didn't say in the press conference the day before or didn't want to.

28:15And if you look at the content, and I think it's really important to stress this, by the way, the actual content of this interview, there are some issues that weren't picked up on yesterday that either weren't asked or that Florentino didn't want to answer that today at least he's addressed. Yes, for example, the situation with Vinicius needing to renew his contract, the situation with Kylian Mbappé, whether it was a mistake to bring in Xabi Alonso, and he said it wasn't, the reasons why this season hasn't gone very well, what happens now with Jose Mourinho. Now, these were things that were asked yesterday, but that Florentino wasn't going to engage with.
28:44Essentially, what Florentino engaged with yesterday, and he's used this comment today, was to try and talk about his enemies. And he talked about internal enemies, he talked about people who want to try and get hold of the club. and he mentioned a man with a South American accent, a Mexican accent, and we believe that he's talking about a guy called Raquel May, who is actually from the east coast of Spain, but has done business deals in Mexico and has talked in the past about trying to position himself to run for the elections. So that was one enemy. The other enemy, of course, was the media, and so much of the focus was on the media.
29:15And the third and most important enemy, I think, in terms of a genuine enemy, is, of course, the ongoing Negreda case. Now, in that sense, that part of it, that part of the content, and as I say, a press conference that was 75 minutes long and really didn't have very much content because it was circular but that part is quite important and that's the part that Alvaro Abelho has picked up on today and I think Florentino having another interview was really a way of saying okay, let's kind of draw a line under what happened yesterday and let's get some of these messages out or at least engage in a way that actually delivers genuine content because the day before, there wasn't too much of it Alo Let me address a few things for a club like Real Madrid, a club of this size, of this importance, of this magnitude, to play the victim role, please, por favor, please.
30:06Real Madrid are not victims. They are not victims. And for them to intimate or insinuate that them losing the league title this season was because of the Negreta case and that somehow there's a connection there, Please. We're not that dumb. You may hate the media, but we're not that dumb. Let me put that to the side. Let me address Arbeloa. If you ever watch a Real Madrid match, whenever Florentino Perez is in attendance, not too far from him, maybe a row in front of him. And to the left, you'll see guys like Santi Solari. You'll see Roberto Carlos. You know, they're usually well-dressed, well-put-together.
30:53What do they do for the club? We don't really know. But they're there sort of... Ambassadors. Yes, quote-unquote. They're there just to kind of speak highly of the club and represent the brand of Real Madrid and look out for Real Madrid. As Álvaro Arbeloa knows that his job is coming to an end out on the field, this man is now trying to secure his place right next to Santi Solari, Roberto Carlos, oh, and here's Arbeloa as a person who's going to be a shield for Real Madrid and just speak the truth as it pertains and from the perspective of Real Madrid and Florentino Perez. For Arbeloa to take on this position after you have just lost the title And with the many things that are going with Real Madrid that are far more important right now, right now than the Negreta case, you focus on that because it's Captain Deflecto.
31:48Let's talk about this because let's not talk about the realities of this club, the issues that we have inside the locker room, the problems that we have had this season, the struggles that we have had on the field. Let's not talk about those things. Yeah. Let's talk about this over here. It is moving and shifting the narrative somewhere else. But again, we are not that dumb. We are not that dumb. We're not just going to focus here and look at the birdie here and ignore all the issues that remain with Real Madrid and issues that have to be resolved. Otherwise, the difference between Barcelona and them is going to continue to grow.
32:25Yes, as Ale pointed out, Real Madrid's issues have been out there for the world to see, and we are seeing them. We are not that dumb. So what's been the reaction to what Alvaro Albeloa had to say as well in his presser? Well, I think in a way, everybody knows, of course, that Albeloa is in an almost impossible position. He can't really say anything other than what he said today. And I think, you know, when he talks about the Negreira case, I think he genuinely does believe that's important. And actually, for what it's worth, I think it is important. I don't think it's the explanation for what's happened this season.
32:56But I think in terms of a historic case, I think it's very significant. The role that Arboleda has now, as I say, is a difficult one. It's interesting, by the way, because both Roberto Carlos and Santi Solari, they don't really have a public-facing role. They don't really talk. The public-facing role is held by Emilio Borjo-Gueno, who is the institutional director who occasionally talks. But really and truly Madrid don't have a public presence in that sense because this is a club that doesn't do media interviews post-game, that doesn't have that kind of pre-game presence. And this means that the only spokesman, really, is the manager, who of course has the obligation, both in the league and the Champions League and also in the Cop of the Raid, to do a pre-game press conference and a post-game press conference.
33:35So Abelho this year has been the sole spokesman of Real Madrid, the only one. And yet, of course, he knows that he has two things that he can do. One is deliver the lines that he wants to deliver and say the things that he wants to say. And I think largely he's done that. But he also has a political role there. And he also has, if you like, an obligation and a responsibility there. And so what he says doesn't really surprise anyone because it comes in that context. And I don't think it's really necessarily something to accuse Abouloh of. But yes, the reaction very much has been exactly what Ali's saying, which is to say that you can talk about these other issues, but there are things that people want to know, that Real Madrid fans want to know.
34:11They want to know why the team hasn't performed well this year. They want to know what happened with Xavi Alonso. They want to know why there was a fight between two players. They want to know why it doesn't seem to work with Vinicius and Mbappé and Bellingham and the team. Why isn't that happening? They want to know what happens next. Is Mourinho coming? If it's not Mourinho, who is it? They want to know which kind of players are going to sign in the summer. And none of these things. And this is the real content, the real heart of it all. And yes, you can criticise journalists. And yes, journalists do get it wrong.
34:37And yes, journalists, you can accuse them of being against your team or against another team or to not be right or to not deal with you fairly. And all of those things can be dealt with as part of a broader discourse. But the fundamental questions that obviously I think fans, even fans of Real Madrid, even those fans of Real Madrid who are watching this right now and saying, we don't like you, journalists. We don't like what you're saying about our club or about our president. Even those fans, I think they're probably more interested in who their manager is going to be and what happens with Mbappé, what happens with Vinicius, than they are in what we say about them.
35:10Well, Real Madrid will have an opportunity to try and save some space tomorrow. They're back in La Liga action, but it's only against Real Oviedo, who's already been relegated. I only said that because we know what they mean to our Sid Lowe. That's Thursday 3.30 p.m. Eastern time. Right, well, as a reminder, Alaves pulled off a big 1-0 win over the recently crowned La Liga champions Barcelona today, a result that's lifted them out of the relegation zone temporarily. Well, our Sidlow caught up with Koski after the game. So try, if you can, to put into words how that felt at the final whistle. Well, it's been a long time for me since I have been playing and winning, so I'm quite happy and quite dead.
35:55So usually I'm looking for that feeling after the match, so I'm happy overall. How easy is it or how difficult is it to live with the pressure when a team is in the kind of position that Alaves are in, that you've got to go and win every game, but at the same time watching other teams winning and trying to fight for survival. What's that like to live with emotionally? Well, it's not easy, but that's what football is about. know about pressure and you need to handle it and okay for me it was a bit extra pressure for that because it was my first start of six months after my injury and here so for me it was a bit extra pressure but I'm happy that we won and that's all that matters.
36:39What was the plan today was part of the idea in your minds the fact that maybe Barcelona having already won the league might be not an easy prospect but an easier prospect than previously? Yeah, that could have played in their mind but of course it's personal on the end of the day so they're used to winning so they don't come 50 % so they go also for the win but maybe they rotate some players but the better doesn't get any better of this so they have a good 25 players who you can put starting 11 and the quality usually keeps the same So it's not every day that you beat Barcelona, but maybe the circumstances helped us today, but we don't know that.
37:26All right, well, let's remind you how things stand at the top half of the La Liga standings. We know that Barcelona have already wrapped up the title in spectacular style. But look at that who's snuck into the top 10, Sevilla, after their come from behind win today. But then look at the bottom half of the standings because this is where the real drama is. Remember I said Sevilla in 10th? Well, only four points separating them in 10th. And Girona in 19th. Absolutely bonkers. And Sid, forget about Real Madrid, Barcelona, top of the table clash. We know that the relegation battle is really where all the drama is at.
38:01So how do you see this playing out or can we just not call it at all? No, I think it's very difficult to call. And I'm glad that you finally come around to my view. Forget the big teams. This is where it's at. This is the real fun. This is the real tension. This is the real excitement. And actually, you know, there's a broader question here. And forgive me, because this sounds like I'm going off on a tangent and starting a whole new debate. But relegation is amazing. And I think sports that don't have relegation really miss out on this kind of thing towards the end of the season. It means so much.
38:33It's a terrible amount of pressure. It's terribly hard for teams that go down. But it's really exciting. Calling this, I think Alaves are in a strong position now because this is the game that was in theory the most difficult, albeit Barcelona come from winning the league. They now go away to Real Oviedo, who despite being the greatest team in the entire world, have just been relegated and have got nothing to play for. So, you know, that on the face of it is a game that they can win. They also play Rayo Vallecano on the final day. Rayo have a European final to prepare for. So Alaves, I think, are in a good position.
39:01I feel really sorry for Levante, who have been absolutely extraordinary over the last 10 games. They've won four of the last six. they've only lost once in those six they're picking up the kind of points that mean that right now on a form guide they would be fourth in the table since Castro took over as coach they would have been in a European place what he's done the club is extraordinary and yet it still might not be enough because everybody's picking up points down there I've got a friend of mine who's a Luante fan and he's been sending me messages for the last couple of weeks saying I don't believe this we're going to go down with 43 points and actually that could happen that could happen Indeed.
39:39Oh, what a time to be alive. I love me some relegation battles. All right. Thank you so much, Sid Lowe, for hanging with us. And I must say that even though Oviedo got relegated, they are still winners because they have you as a supporter. But you keep taking shots at Oviedo, though. Well, Girona will be in action tomorrow and see if they can save some face as well and get themselves out of the relegation zone when they go up against Real Sociedad at 2 p.m. And then a lot of eyes on Real Madrid as they do face that Real Oviedo, who we've talked about so much today. As you know, managing maintenance, repair, and operations is never easy.

41:13Well, in Scotland, in front of emotional fans, many of them in tears, Hearts would beat Falkirk in their home finale. Meanwhile, Celtic would benefit off of a controversial penalty to get the win over Motherwell. And now it all comes down to the final game this weekend where these two sides play each other. Hearts just need a draw to win their first Scottish Premiership title in 66 years, while Celtic need the win. Sider Stevie, set the stage for us. And who wins? Do you notice? Nobody, most people won't know this, but probably about 30 years ago, Hearts were in a similar position. They had to win the last game of the season to win the first title.
41:56And they blew it. They got beat. And Rangers actually won it. So you're going to say they're blowing it again? 30 years later, they find themselves in the same position where actually they don't need to win. They only need to draw against Celtic to win the title. And unfortunately, I'm going to go against everything. I mean, I'm a Rangers fan. I remember. So you would be happy to see Celtic do it. I think Celtic's experience is going to be too much of that. Wait a minute. And it's going to be crying faces again, honestly. I do, I just think... You feel it in your bones. I do, I think Celtic is going to win this game and they're going to go on and win the title.
42:39Wait a minute. And ironically, without that penalty, Hearts would have already won it. Pretty much. Yeah. Because they would have had to lose this game 7-8-0. By three. So, hold on. Correct me if I'm wrong, Stevie. Didn't the writer of your autobiography, Mark Donaldson... Yes. The guy that helped you write your book... Yep. What's the name of your book again? Let's give it a shout. You don't know? Five league titles and a packet of crisps. Hey, all right. I have it. I have a size of coffee. Coffee, coffee. I need a coffee. So Mark Donaldson, who's a big, and I mean a big, Hearts fan, you don't care about it.
43:20See that guy we showed in the picture in the highlights crying? Yes. That's going to be him? He's going to be crying. Not for joy. Not for joy. Not for joy. No, I don't think so. Isn't Mark still out there? Was he in the stands? I know. How did we get Mark crying? He was there last weekend. All right. Well, remember, extra time is where we answer your questions and have a bit of a laugh. Make sure to catch us there over on our YouTube channel. Yana Gafjortov will be back. Well, congratulations are in order for Inter because they completed the domestic double by beating Lazio in the Coppa Italia.
43:57There you can see they won 2-0. Well, for more chatter on this, as well as PSG wrapping up the league, you can bet they'll be talking about it over on the next Gab and Jules show. A fresh episode drops in 24 hours.
44:15Well, Victor Olsheman, remember him? He's pretty really good. And he scored not one, but two goals against Antalaya Sport to officially give Galatasaray the Turkish Super League title. Well done to them, but he's not claiming that, is he? He is. It went down as two goals. I think we're missing the point here, Stevie. Yeah, Stevie, just give him his flowers and give Galatasaray their flowers. Oh, well done. They won the league, aye. Oh, my days. Stevie, a little Debbie Downer. All right, let's talk about this own goal, shall we? Because, yep, it happened well into stoppage time and it denied Al Nasser and specifically Cristiano Ronaldo.
44:59the chance to win Saudi Pro League title right here. Jack of traffic, right? Well, his own defender pushed him, actually. That's the reason why he doesn't catch it. Catch the ball, man. Catch the ball. Catch the ball. Oh, no. Now, Cristiano, don't worry. This has only delayed the inevitable. They still just need one win, I think, in their last couple of games. But you know he wanted it to. Oh, one win in their last game. Oh, so stakes are high. Never count your chickens. Never count your chickens before they hatch. All right, that's it for this edition of ESPN FC, but don't go anywhere because Extra Time is next.
45:40Welcome into Extra Time, everyone. Alexis hanging out here with Stevie and Ale, and Jan Agafjortov is back. Let's get straight into the questions because we seem to have a few. First one, Jan Anthony Gordon to Bayern is looking like a strong possibility. If the reports are true, good move for Gordon and Bayern? Well, what we know is that Christian Falk, who is the head of sport in Bildsetung, had his Bayern insider, and said they have agreed with the player. Doesn't mean that he will go to the club, but I think that is quite a good signing for them. When we know the people going forward by Bayern, he won't go straight into the game or into the team.
46:21But I think that we saw now at the end of the season that Bayern need more alternatives because, yes, Diaz have had a great season. Muciala will probably come back, hopefully, to his best next season. But I think that Gordon would be a good signing for them. Although I have the feeling that the last word hasn't been said in this because there have got to be other top clubs agreed with him too. I have that feeling. Anyone want to chime in? If there's other top clubs involved, why are you going to Bayern when you're not getting a game? Because he's not going to hit Diaz or Lise. We don't know what those other clubs are as of now.
47:03Could be Hearts.
47:07Could be Hearts. They could be freshly crowned champions. From Bayern Munich's perspective, to Jan's point, they were lacking depth at the end of the season. There were some tired legs towards the end of the season, towards the end of the Champions League campaign. And those tired legs were exposed when they needed something. They needed something different against PSG in that second leg and you just couldn't get it. And you turn to the bench and it's like, well, that guy's injured, that guy's not available. So, depth. They were lacking. We talked about it in the earlier part of the season that if there was going to be a weak point for Bayern Munich, it's a lack of depth.
47:44And it showed itself at the worst time possible. Alright, let's push on to the next question which might be of interest to Stevie. Stevie, there are reports of the Liverpool board seemingly backing Arnest Lott for next season. Are they taking a big risk of falling into a 10-hag kind of situation midway next season? Were they wasted time in making the change and lose out on guys like Xabi Alonso and Nagelsmann? Yeah, absolutely. I don't think anybody could actually sit here and say to Liverpool fans, don't worry, this was just a blip this season. I'm not sure what he's doing the whole nine yards.
48:23Nobody can do that because there's nobody can say anything other than we're taking a risk here. And that's what they're doing. They're taking a risk because they gave the guys players last year. They gave a guy money to spend on them. And the season has been a complete and utter disaster. Well, I shouldn't say that because they've actually managed and they will get in the Champions League. But in terms of what's expected at Liverpool, in terms of what we watch on the field, it has been just awful to watch. It's been awful to watch. So the fact that they're backing them, absolutely, you'd have to say it as a bit of a risk.
49:03Jan? But if these two players, I mean, Xabi Alonso, we know him as a great coach. I love and admire him, his personality. But he hasn't been a great success at Leverkusen. And I've been told as well that his standing is not as big a Liverpool that people expect him to be. Because when you have a star name, you will always say that their position is better. What about Julian Nagelsmann? I mean, what a risk that would have been to sign him. So the risk of let Slot keep on doing the team, I mean, you have to add that up to the risk of getting a Julian Nagelsmann that was mentioned here. I can't see that.
49:45So I think that I would prefer to go with Slot and not, for example, with an alternative as Julian Nagelsmann. That's a risk too. Yeah, I mean, there's not an obvious choice. You know, yes, you can say about Alonso and Nagel, But you're not going, oh, I can't believe we're not getting one of them. You're not doing that. 100 % you're not doing that. So if you still have faith in slot, then it's kind of understandable. I did say United would finish ahead of you this season, but you didn't want to believe me. What does that have to do with the conversation at all? I just realised I haven't seen Stevie in a while, so I just couldn't pass up the moment to just give him a little dagger.
50:26Do you know what I mean? The nine years before that, don't tell me. No, but no time like the present. Steven. All right, moving on. You're in for a shock next year, by the way. Moving on to Ale's vacation horse. You actually better keep going. Just get it all out because next year you ain't going to have the chance. Oh, we'll see about that, Stevie. We'll see about that, especially if Arnazat's still your manager. Anyway. That's your only hope. It's been a while, guys. It's been a while. That's your only hope. ESPNFC World Cup power rankings are out. Norway is 10 and USA nowhere to be seen. Xhaka's power rankings are starting to look sensible.
51:02Ooh, all right. Well, these are the ESPN FC World Cup power rankings. I don't think we chose them. No, no. No. No, it's our journalists. So you can definitely yell at the likes of Mark Ogden, Julian LaRoz, Gab Marcotti, Alex Kirkland. Well, don't tell Florentino Perez. He'll start yelling at them for free. Don't worry about it. What is the problem? That Norway is 10 or that the U.S. is nowhere to be seen? He hasn't said, but maybe he's saying U.S. is nowhere to be seen. A bit shocking at Norway 10 shocking? There's a reason that Norbert Wissing. Now, it's not shocking. What shocking is that England is fourth?
51:39I mean, that is shocking for me. I mean, I can't believe that these colleagues of ours have both of them on the fourth position. They played in a very easy qualification group. They have nothing to show now in the friendlies. And the key players are out or injured or out of form. So that is for me the big surprise. I find myself in terms of Norway that people call me foreign journalists or TV channels talking about that we are kind of a secret favorite. I find myself in a country where we have Beatlemania about our team and we find ourselves just thinking of who we're going to play in the final because we are so excited for us being in the World Cup.
52:21But I also see a Norwegian team that has a goalkeeper that hasn't been in goal for Sevilla since September. We have two defenders. One is a reserve at Brentford. One is a reserve at Wolverhampton. And some out of form in midfield and so on. So I guess I know speak as a fan that I'm getting worried as it's getting closer and closer to the World Cup. But Norway at 10, that's OK based on a qualification group. England 40 is a shocking thing. Ali you might find this strange but Okay Jan's in the same position I was in in 1978 As a fan Oh throwback Well Scotland Everybody in Scotland thought that Scotland were going to win the World Cup in 1978 Win Ali McLeod Ali McLeod Ali McLeod yeah he was the manager Now Ali could sell sand to the Arabs I'm telling you He really could And he sold it to everybody in Scotland I mean Scotland play at Hampden Park it is at least two hour drive from Hampden Park to the airport where Scotland were flying out of to go to Argentina and from Hampden Park all the way to the airport there was people on the side of the road waving flags clapping, singing the whole thing because they thought they were going to win the World Cup win win we didn't even get out of the group in the end so I know exactly where you are Jan Stevie can I remember that and the first thing when I came to the World Cup was Pobillas the Peruan great he made a free kick free kick yeah but it has to be said that the Netherlands went all the way to the final losing it to Argentina Scotland beat them and that was maybe one of the best games in the tournament remember Archer Gemmels goal that is my World Cup A great ball come.
54:15And you're right, Stevie. I do find it strange. I thought you would. I do. You're correct. And just for clarification, I wasn't even born yet. So, yeah. Find it strange. Same piece. Right, next question. Stevie, again, describe Hearts' potential title from a big five leagues perspective. Would it be similar to Atletico de Madrid winning La Liga and having to fend off the two main juggernauts in the country. No, it's harder than that. Yeah, it's harder than that. I mean, I believe I'm correct in saying that it's probably 70 or 80 years since Haft's won a top Scottish title in terms of the league.
55:06And as I said, 30 years ago, they had a chance. but then since the Premier League era no and if they do win it this year there's a chance that in two or three years time they'll be back down the other end of the Scottish Premier League so this is for them again this is now or never because it's going to be another 30 years by the time they have another chance because Celtic and Rangers will have more money than Hearts and will retool and will be better. So, yeah, unfortunately, I've already said that I think Celtic will beat Ars and that means that we might have to wait another 30 years to get in this position again.
55:51Atletico de Madrid is a Champions League team. It's a team that has reached a Champions League final. And compete. And so, no, the parallel does not exist. It's not the equivalent. If we're going to find somewhere in La Liga of a team that has won a title that perhaps you were not expecting it. From a smaller team, you have to go back to say something like Deportivo La Coruña, Super Deport of Bebeto and Mauro Silva, and those sort of teams that have now disappeared. Deportivo La Coruña, you cannot even find down. They're not in La Segunda. They're way down there from a team that was competing at the very top of La Liga and then just kind of when the money went, so did the team, and they disappear.
56:34that's the sort of story that I think you can draw a parallel from. Atletico Madrid has been an established brand across Europe for a long time now. Kind of like Leicester City winning the Premier League now. What a fall from grace. What a fall from grace. Next question is for Jan. Jan, which club has been the biggest surprise in the Bundesliga this season and which one has been the biggest letdown? Well, I will say Hoffenheim has had a great season. I mean, that they're going to be up there was surprisingly. I think the biggest letdown, I'm sorry to say, got to be my club, Eintracht Frankfurt.
57:11They are now battling out to get that last, last chance for the seventh place, competing with Freiburg and Augsburg to get that seventh position to get into the Conference League. There has been different things happening this season. But remember, they started the season in the Champions League. They were third in the league. They got there for the second time in the Champions League, but now through the position in the Bundesliga. So I think that even my most loyal Frankfurt friends will say that we have been the biggest disappointment in the Bundesliga. And when the season started in the Champions League and we conceded goals for fun, Then Riera came in.
57:56I'm a bit sorted out the conceding of goal, but lately it's been a bit sad following my team. Bundesliga, Ale, what about you? I agree with Hoffenheim. And if I am going to talk about a letdown, let's just say Wolfsburg, who are down there fighting to stay up in Bundesliga. And it's a team with resources, with players available, a talented group of players, at least on paper, player personnel should be more than enough for this team to at the very least be a mid-table team in Bundesliga. And here they are having to depend on getting results late so that they can stay up. That's a letdown. Because if indeed they don't get the results, they're gone.
58:42And who knows when they're coming back. As we just talked about. All right, final question now. If you could listen to one music artist forever, who would it be? Let me start out with Stevie. because Stevie, you're quite the lover of music. You're always singing. One. Adele. Remember Stevie in his Adele period? Yeah, yeah, that's gone. That's gone? Oh, wow. How fickle men are. Oh, my goodness. All right, we'll come back to Stevie. All right, come back. Yeah, because Stevie is a big lover of music. Ale? Chino y Nacho? Well, it could be Chino. Franco De Vita? Franco De Vita, Jordano. I could toss a little Jose Luis Rodriguez.
59:21Oh, yes. But if it's in English, how about a little Whitney Houston? Oh, solid choice. Yeah, that, you know, I think that you can listen to that for a while. Always, always for the Queen. Jan? Well, there was a big discussion among my friends when Sweden and Denmark were supposed to get to the World Cup. Should we support them or should we just say they're our neighbors and arch rivals? I was in between. So I will, I was saying when Sweden came on, oh, they're here again, but I will go ABBA. I will go ABBA. Yeah. I mean, they have made like four or five hundred number ones. I mean, Benny and Björn, Agneta, Anfried.
1:00:05I mean, you can't, ABBA, you, if you're in a bad mood listening to ABBA, see your psychiatrist. I mean, it's not possible to, to, to, to be in bad mood when you listen to ABBA. So if I'm going to listen to them for one forever, I go Swede this time. Wow, two strong choices. Whitney and Abba, Stevie. If it's a group, yeah, it's got to be Abba. Really? Yeah. If it's an individual artist. One of us is crying, one of us is dying. I didn't know we would have gone for that one. They don't have a bad song. Abba don't have a bad song. And they do always make you feel good. Yeah. But fine, if it's an individual artist, because you already said Abba.
1:00:44I'm stuck between Rod Stewart and Celine Dion. Oh, Celine. Every single time you hear the two of them... You get goosebumps. You get the whole... You get entertainment. You know that it's them. Yeah. You know exactly who's singing. Yeah, again. They don't sing bad songs. What's your favourite Celine Dion song?
1:01:10Oh, this is hard. If I'm going to play. That's a tough one. No. If I'm going to play. No, it was very good, the one she had at the Olympics. That was from Edith Piaf. She was standing in the tower. That is a fantastic song. I wish I could understand it, but it was in France. We didn't. It's a very sad song. You can't go, you can't not like Titanic. Oh, your heart will go on. Aye, you can't not like that. Your heart does go on. I won't sing. For you. Oh.
1:01:51For somebody who wasn't going to sing, I think we're singing. You brought the Selena to me. I'll tell you what, if it sounded like that, I'd have jumped out. But I would have been that, and I would have been bye. Bye. I'd have been up the front like that. See ya. You want me to hold you, Steve? I'll hold you. Give him the Titanic hug. Come on, TV. Hands up. Oh, yes. Yes. You're holding him quite high. What is he saying? What is he saying? Sorry. Sorry. What is he showing? Sorry, my bad. What is he showing, Sally? What kind of version of Titanic did you see? I'm sorry. He was holding him quite up.
1:02:35Wow. All right. We're going to go jump out to some Celine Dion. We can get a harmonizing going. I can't remember the one you had from the film. Celine Dion. Those superhero films. Celine Dion. Yeah. Go ahead, Jan. I will just get an honorable mention of Elvis Presley. I can listen to him as well. Oh, don't get me down that rabbit hole. That was Titanic after dark. That was Titanic. Starring Alejandro Moreno and Stevie Niko.
1:03:11What? What is this one? It's the one from the latest film. It was a superhero film. By Celine Dion. I've been in smoke. Ashes. Beauty from out the ashes. Beauty from out the ashes. Alright. Can beauty come out of ashes. Well for more of Stevie's beautiful singing voice, make sure to tune in to ESPN FC. We are on 7 Days a Week.
