In short

The episode is a sports news and analysis show (ESPN FC/Extra Time) covering multiple matches and storylines. It opens with Manchester City vs Brentford: City won 3-0 (Doku, Haaland, “Mermush”), but guests argue it didn’t feel like a dominant performance because Brentford defended deep and City were slow in the final third; defensive VAR/penalty calls and City’s recurring defensive issues are debated. Key claim: City are “second best” in spells and rely heavily on Doku to create breakthroughs.

Guests

Dan Thomas (host), Craig Burley (former player/commentator), and Shaka Hislop (former goalkeeper/commentator). Later segments add Luis Garcia, Alejandro Moreno, and Ian Darke.

Notable examples

Doku’s goal; discussion of Arsenal vs West Ham pressure for the title/race; Real Madrid’s El Clasico soap-opera (Valverde/Chouameni fines, Mbappé headlines); Liverpool-Chelsea 1-1 (fans booing Slot/Rio sub); Wolfsburg vs Bayern 0-1; and a Cunha “dive” debate.

0:42Welcome in to the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Dan Thomas, shown by Craig Burley and Shaka. Here's how we'll kick things off in the Premier League, Manchester City, taking on Brentford. Not really too much to report in the first half, although Brentford fans want a new year sent off. Shaka, what did you think? Yeah, early on, there was a coming together between Nunez and Shara. I thought Shara's first touch let them down. I was OK with the no-call. City would kick on in the second half. Another great goal from Doku. Haaland and Mamouche making it 3-0. For more on this, this all came in. Frank LaBeouf.

1:11Craig, you hit the nail on the head. This was not a 3-0 win for City. Well, it was a 3-0 win, but it didn't feel like a 3-0 win. Yeah, no, no. Something like that. And as I said, before they got on the score sheet, it looked like, you know, Thiago could have put Brent for the head. I thought Brentford would, and we were talking on yesterday's show, I thought Brentford would have been a little bit more front foot and a little bit more open, but they were not. They did open up in the second half, but they were more resolute. They defended deeper, and that made it difficult for City, who were taking all these touches again.

1:40And Cherokee was guilty today, got taken off, but there was no space to operate. And it felt like City were almost trying to walk it in. And it took Doku, once again, to do him a little bit special, albeit he got a bit of luck with the bad pass that came back to him, but the finish was fantastic. And that sort of got them off and running. Then obviously Haaland bundles one in and Mermush finishes it off. And it's over to you, Arsenal, who play West Ham tomorrow, your old team. I can't see it. I just, I can't see West Ham beating Arsenal, but they are fighting probably with Tottenham head-to-head for the remaining spot.

2:15Euphorys are not out of it. So they have got a lot to play for, but they really lack quality. And I just, although City have piled the pressure on, I'd be surprised if we were sitting here tomorrow at this time and West Ham had beat them. I just can't see it happening. At times during this game, I thought you saw the best of City, but then you see why they're trailing as they are, why they haven't secured this title race. And controlled large spells, especially early on, up against Brentford. At times, Brentford didn't seem to have a kick, didn't, to Craig's freezing, weren't playing on the front four.

2:49But then you see City defensively. We have those two shadow shots. The first, I'm with Craig in that I didn't think much of it. I thought it was a poor touch from Charter to start with. The second, I am not at all convinced by it. That quite easily could have been given. Both could have easily been given. And had they been given, I'm not sure there was enough to overturn it. So you see this kind of poor defensive side to Manchester City that continue to haunt them all season long. caught away with it today just to keep themselves in this title race. But this is why I think City have shown themselves, at least thus far, to be second best.

3:29Frank, Doku's having a lovely time at the moment. Yes, indeed. And I was so happy that he was here today because otherwise... Yeah, that was the kind of game that I saw today. You know, that was insane. I was hoping that Doku would get all the balls, you know, to make sure that he can attack and show us some entertainment. But otherwise, the others are also disappointed. And thank you, Mr. Dokut, who made my 90 minutes quite OK. But I wasn't happy with City. Yesterday, we talked with Craig about the tactic that Brentford will have and that they would open up and try to play, maybe suit Manchester City better.

4:13In fact, they had the right tactic where they kind of parked the bus and City was unable to create almost anything. For me, it's a clear penalty on the first foul on Chad because there is a real push. And when you're at full speed, you cannot control yourself. And it's a real push from Nunez. But, well, it's football, so it's full of other decisions, but whatever. But I really was disappointed by City. the fact that they keep on being so slow on the last third, not having any runs around to make sure that they can do something. And again, they have only Doku who can create something, change the pace of the game.

4:56Otherwise, it's very flat. But in fairness, they've put themselves in a position, OK, they stuffed it up against Everton, and that's why they're in this position where they're sitting, sort of waiting to see what happens tomorrow. but they've manoeuvred themselves without playing brilliantly into the position again where if Arsenal, and I don't think it will happen, but you never know, if Arsenal somehow lose tomorrow, they'll probably win the league. So it's not, you know, after, was it Monday's game or whenever it was against Everton, the position they're in is they've chucked the ball back over into Arsenal's court and if they lose, Arsenal that is, then City will feel confident about winning two games or three games, whatever it is, to win the league.

5:39Let's just remind you how things stand at the bottom of the table because West Ham obviously are fighting, along with Spurs, for survival. So West Ham very much with something to play for tomorrow as well. They won't roll over against the league leaders. Frank, I'm just wondering if what happens today with that win for City psychologically has any effect on Arsenal going into the clash on Sunday. Yeah, it's always a big pressure when you know that you have to win because it's not even a draw away from home You have to win and against the team while we were fighting for for for their survival And and that's going to be tricky for Arsenal because they have no other choices.

6:20They know if they draw Manchester City, which I think is going to play on on Wednesday If they win, they're going to go first and it's going to be hard for them to catch them back. So So, Arsenal has to win. Know the pressure. But I think they handled it pretty well after they lost against City. Manchester City was for one day first. And because Manchester City didn't play Arsenal, they had a chance to go back in the first position. And they did that. And they handled the pressure pretty well. I guess I don't see Arsenal losing against West Ham. But a draw is possible. And a draw is impossible for Arsenal.

6:57So, the pressure will be there. it's going to be intense for both teams for different reasons but I think it's going to be interesting to watch a draw of course means it will then go down to goal difference if they all win out. Shaki you've been banged on all the day that you think West Ham are going to get something from this game I think there's every chance listen West Ham are where they are and deservedly so the only reason they are not relegated at this point is because since losing to Nottingham Forest first week of January West Ham have lost one game at home Manchester City dropped points at West Ham.

7:32And all of a sudden, they've put together a bit of a fight, building on that home form, and kind of understanding West Ham and a lot of the psychology around that club. They welcome teams who are flying, who are looking to lift titles, coming late on, and just playing party pooper. I think that plays into their wheelhouse. this is don't take this for granted if you're Arsenal what's going on for? what's going on for? I'm backing my old club to get something out of this you do realise the game's not at Upton Park don't you? it is right? no it is no not Upton Park at West Ham you're talking as if it's the Upton Park it's the Upton Park atmosphere and teams don't want to go there but they have lost one game since the since the first week of January at home.

8:24I'm expecting Arsenal to flex their muscles tomorrow against this West Ham team. As, at this moment in time, the best team in England. They're in the Champions League final. I'm expecting them to boss this game and win this game. Is there an argument to say we haven't really seen Arsenal flex their muscles against an opposition that's had something to play for? Would you say they flexed their muscles against Atleti? I thought Arsenal were outstanding against Fulham. Yes, but Fulham are on the whole. Right. To your point, I guess. You know, if Arsenal play anything like we saw, opposition aside, like we saw against Fulham, I think they cruise through these last three games of the season and it's in no real doubt.

9:06I don't think Arsenal have put together two performances like that back-to-back all season long. So while you take the Fulham result as a standalone result and what it is, they're still question, Manchester, whether Arsenal can or will do that in back-to-back games. Well, they did flex their muscles, in a sense, against Atleti. It wasn't in a footballing entertainment sort of way, but it was just snuffing Atleti out, who were pretty bad, it has to be said. But pressure does amazing things to players and teams, and we've seen it with Arsenal, we've seen it with Arteta, we've seen it within the crowd.

9:46So the pressure does amazing things. But that pressure is also West Ham's because Arsenal can do Tottenham a favour by putting another nail in the West Ham coffin, which I'm sure Tottenham fans will be hoping a bit of a juxtaposition that Arsenal are going to win the league. But Tottenham need to survive. They need to survive. So I've been down there at the bottom fighting and scrapping. If you make it really ugly and tight for these bigger teams, then they can get frustrated. My question would be on this big pitch at the London Stadium, whether West Ham, although Shaq said the home form is better, is whether West Ham have enough about them.

10:21And they have been defensively getting better under Nuno because he couldn't fix it at the start. They've started to be a bit stronger defensively, but I just don't see enough from them, West Ham, that is going forward. You got an Arsenal win? Yeah, I got an Arsenal win tomorrow, yes. What did you say in the end? He sort of mumbled something. He moved on. We just agreed to move on. We just agreed to move on. He gave up his spiel and then he realised he was waffling into a West Ham call. That wasn't quite sure how to get out of. And he's up. He's up. 3-0 Arsenal, he said. Frank, what are you going for quick?

11:02I'm going for Arsenal. Right. I'm sorry for the armors, but I don't see that coming against Arsenal. Yeah, they need the three points. They're going to get the three points. They're going to fight for that. We'll of course be discussing that game on the next edition of ESPN FC. Be sure to join us for that. Thrivent believes money is more than numbers. 12:46Meanwhile, no surprise that it is Valverde and Chiumelli on the front page of ASS and Mark of the Madrid-based newspapers. Half a million and get running. Iron Fist, says the front page of ASS. It has been such a soap opera that has just seemed to be snowballing over the recent months. So let's just take you through exactly what has been happening as we count down to our Clásico on Sunday. Let's take it all the way back to the Spanish Super Cup. Of course, Real Madrid losing against Barcelona. Xavi Alonso then leaves the club by mutual consent. They bring in Alvaro Arbeloa and just days after that appointment, it all goes wrong in the Copa del Rey as they lose to El Vecete and are out in the round of 16.

13:29Fast forward after some horrible results. they find themselves out of the title race. That away loss against Mallorca, home draw against Girona, hands the title to Barcelona. And then they showed up a little bit, didn't they, in the Champions League? They at least tried, but even that wasn't good enough as they would be eliminated by Bayern Munich. Now off the pitch, there's been drama as well. The Carreras and Rudiger incident. Carreras confirmed an incident with the teammates that reportedly Rudiger slapped him back in April. This then continued. Off the field problems. Kylian Mbappe injured.

14:02He's off in Italy in vacation. And it's not only that, but also with Mbappe, we're hearing reports as well that he's fallen out with an assistant coach. And that Valverde and Chiu-Ameni incident, of course, we talked about of late on Friday, they were fined€500 ,000 each. Here is our blower for the first time on that incident.

14:28The players have already expressed their regret, acknowledged their mistake, accepted the consequences of their actions and apologized to the fans, the club, the locker room and to me. And that's enough for me. What I will not do is publicly burn my players at the stake because neither Fede Valverde nor Aurelia Ntrua, many, deserve it. given what they have done for this club over the years. I have always felt it as a fan and over these past four months, from what they have shown me day by day, both of them, what it means to be a Real Madrid player.

15:09But Chouameni trained with his Real Madrid teammates. Of course, Valverde is out. However, it looks like the Frenchman will indeed play in our Clásico. So much drama. It's like a mini soap opera. And let's get the latest, shall we, as we go over to our team in Catalonia. Luis Garcia, Alejandro Moreno and the beautiful Ian Dark. I can't live up to that billing, but thanks very much indeed. Yeah, what a drama, even by Real Madrid standards, an explosive week. What mood can they possibly go into this Clasico in after the dispiriting, depressing kind of week that they've had with the headlines. Yeah, definitely not the best one.

15:50These kind of games, you kind of marked it on your agenda, on your calendar, when it's going to come. El Clasico, and you're looking forward. If you are a player of Real Madrid, if you are a player of Barcelona, it's an exciting game. It's always special for you as a player, for the crowd, for the supporters. I'm not sure if that's the way they are thinking right now. I'm not sure if they are going to enjoy it. You always enjoy it until the end and you see the result. But right now, by the situation that Real Madrid is having, by not being in a great form, by not having chances of winning a trophy this season, I don't think that's the right moment to get a special game like this one.

16:28And I think that's the feeling of Real Madrid. They just want to arrive here, play the game, and really wait for the end of this season and try to go on holiday. Ali, are you surprised that Suameni is going to start this game after being fined half a million euros this week by the club and being involved in this world? A hunch-up, wasn't it, really, with Valverde? Well, he needs that appearance bonus. I'll tell you that much. I'm not surprised because I think Chouameni in particular, given what the reports have been, he needs to be out there in the field. The players have to take responsibility for what has gone on inside this locker room.

17:10and Chua Mene is at the forefront of that. So if you're out of Eloa, if you sit him down, that's a problem. That's going to create a story. So you might as well put him out there because who else is going to be available for you to do the job that Chua Mene does for you? I think you need not only Chua Mene to be on the field, you need him to play, you need him to play well, and that goes for the rest of Real Madrid. They need to play well. Where that confidence is going to come from, hard to tell. They're manufacturing a feeling about this team. But truth be told, if we're betting money here, if we're putting money on something, what's more likely to happen?

17:47For Real Madrid to get absolutely housed and destroyed by Barcelona or for this team to somehow manufacture a performance and win? I think my money would go in the direction of Barcelona having a runaway victory against this group of players. Yeah, and they've won all 17 home games this season and tend to rattle in three or four goals every time they play. Real Madrid, they've won five of the last six Clasicos. Where are you expecting the story to go with Mbappe here? Because he's been in the headlines as well, late back from the holiday, away, when people think he should have been getting treatment, all that kind of thing.

18:21We'd expect him to start here, wouldn't we? Yeah, at least that's what the papers are saying, that he will be ready. I think he must be really happy of what just happened between the two and many, because no one talked anymore about his holiday and the situation. I think it was giving a few days off to rest, to recover a little bit. I'm sure this kind of play always trouble with someone responsible of their treatment and looking after them. And while he was enjoying, he wasn't expecting, I'm sure, to be in this situation. But I'm expecting him to be because, as I just mentioned, on this game, all the top players have to show up, has to show the commitment, the responsibility of this Real Madrid after a very bad season, try to at least win the Classic.

19:08Because that cleans a little bit all the things that happened before. They could make a big statement here, couldn't they? They'd love nothing better than to spoil Barcelona's party. But are they good enough anyway? And are they good enough after the week they've had? Let me just touch on Mbappe very quickly. We did a timeline of Real Madrid since January. We could have done a timeline of his season. Because early on in the season, you would have thought, man, this guy is really bringing it. He's scoring goals while the rest of the team was struggling. He was scoring goals, and it felt like it was Mbappe's team because Vini was focused on, am I arguing with Xavi Alonso?

19:44Am I listening to Xavi Alonso? Does he like me? Does he not like me? Why is he taking me off the field? And Mbappe was the guy. And then somehow his performance has dipped. The production has gone. And then all that love and all that equity that he had built with the Real Madrid fans seemed to have disappeared. And so if you were to do a very informal poll with Real Madrid fans now, they would go 80-20, 90-10 for Vini Jr. as the leader of this team in the attack. The season for Mbappe went from great to not so good to now it's like he's not committed to the team. He should leave the club. That's how quickly it has changed for him.

20:21And that's how fickle the Real Madrid fans are. But it also has to do with his behavior, the lack of performance, and it reflects poorly because the team haven't been doing well. Had Real Madrid been winning games, all of this would have gone sort of under the table. Nobody would be talking about it. But because they haven't been playing well, they haven't been winning games, they're not going to win a title in anything. Then everybody's highlighted, including Kylian Mbappe. As to your question, Ian, because I took the scenic route to get there, for your question. You're allowed. Are they good enough?

20:52Well, they've proven that they can be. They can be. And that's the frustrating part about Real Madrid. Well, the first Clasico this season, that was the best performance under Xavi Alonso. Disciplined, tight, great plan. They carried it out, but player power took over and Alonso went. And player power is going to get rid of Arbeload, too, isn't it, by the look of it? So they can be. Will they? No. This team is not together right now to put together a performance. And I think you're going to need one against Barcelona. Quick word about the prospective champions, Barcelona. If they don't do it tomorrow, they're going to do it anyway, aren't they?

21:28Yeah, at some point it will happen. And they don't have, yes, with a single point they will make it happen. But I'm sure, I'm totally sure that tomorrow you're going to see a hungry team trying to go, maybe not to try to score 10. If they can, they will do it. But at least to get the result and celebrate it in front of the rival. They only need a draw. Before we go, Ali, that Manchester United-Sunderland game, the Cunha incident, where are you on that? What about it, Ian? Are you suggesting that this was a dive? 100 % a dive. And let me just tell you, I know I have a very open mind when it comes to drawing files.

22:05This would be frowned upon in my diving camp. We do not teach this in my diving camp. It is frowned upon. 100 % a dive. Embarrassing from Mateus Cunha. That's just about it from us. We're just opposite the railway station here. The backside of the railway. Yeah, we know all the scenic venues here. if Real Madrid lose this game and lose the Clasico and Barcelona are champions and they're swinging back the champagne I think Real Madrid will want to go over that railway station get the first train out of town great stuff guys as always thank you very much of course the boys will be there tomorrow for Barca against Real Madrid our coverage begins live 2.30pm Eastern on ESPN plus and ESPN and straight after that game we'll be talking about a certain Leon Alnes.

23:22I would like to play with the Argentine Selección. It would be a dream. It's not normal that a player like Leo didn't have any Selección. There are many like him in the world. What was his strategy then? Secuestrarlo. It was spectacular. We need to send a video with his own players so that they can see and they can invite them. The desperation was to bring them to play in the Argentine Selección. Perder a player of the league. Messi would be sitting here with me talking.

23:55Just a reminder, if you're on the West Coast, be sure to register for our watch party. Carlos Puyol will be there. Also, Edm Hazard. But of course, most importantly, Alexis Nunez will be at NOS. 26:07Liverpool 1-Chelsea 1 is how it finished at Anfield. Gravenberg with a great opener to see Liverpool take the lead. They faded though as the game went on. Enzo Fernandes' free kick would avoid everyone to find the back of the net. 1-1 is how it finished. Interesting moment. Rio was substituted in the second half. There were boos from the Liverpool fans. Arnaz Slott addressed that after the game. This season they will have their opinion and it will not change. But if we can have the summer that we are planning to have, then I'm 100 % convinced that we will be a different team next season than we are now.

26:45Different in terms of results, different in how things look. But it's not always that simple because sometimes you know what you have to do, but it's not always possible to also get exactly what you want. But for us, for me, it's really clear what we are lacking this season. Well, there you are Liverpool fourth in the table Champions League of course fine for them Right, Frank is with us I think he talked about next season I think he has to get to next season We were talking about this yesterday and both Shaq and I are in some doubt that he will get there I think the Ingramor substitution albeit he clarified that and he clarified it in the interview after the match directly that he asked Ingham if he could continue.

27:36And the young lad was like, I'm not sure. So that's why he took him off. But I think the reaction of the fans tells you where they are with the manager. I think it tells you where they are with the trust of Arna Slaught. And after that Gravenberg opening goal, it got really flat. And they allowed Chelsea easy possession and the crowd again. And I think he's feeling this with the crowd because he mentioned it in his interview there. The crowd were really restless. I mean, they were not booing, but they were getting frustrated about the pace of Liverpool play, about the backward passes, about the lack of ingenuity, and everything about a Liverpool team in the last few years that's been really good to watch.

28:24It's gone. And he can talk about next season all he wants. They will be in the Champions League. I mean, of course they will be. and that was their objective after their poor start. But he's shown no sign, I don't think, that he can get this Liverpool team playing with any panache again. And don't forget this is the Chelsea side. They're celebrating a point. Did you see the players at the end? That's how bad they have been. Six straight losses. And yet they could easily have won this game. So, yeah, look, two sides are struggling. But I think a Liverpool manager who has managed to do something that not a lot of Liverpool managers have done recently and it's make the fans start to turn against them, which the Liverpool fans have started to do with Arnest Lott.

29:05I sat here yesterday and said I couldn't see any scenario other than Liverpool winning comfortably. Given what you've seen from Chelsea of late, particularly last week against Nottingham Forest B, it was the least you could expect from Liverpool going out and winning comfortably. Now, Arnest Lott, quite clearly talking confidently, but I've got more questions. kind of given what he said he's talking about if we have the summer that we plan to have as though the summer that they had last year was not good enough or this summer is somehow going to be better are you going to spend more money than you did last summer I don't know how you do that given the fact that there's a World Cup this summer and you can probably expect 80 % of your players to be a part of that work up and so therefore maybe come back for pre-season a bit later how is this summer going to be better than last and given the fact that you were coming off a season in which you were champions had the summer that you did both in terms of spending uh and time and you produce this why am i as a liverpool fan going to sit back and say well yeah this is the summer where it all comes together yeah there is absolutely nothing about this that that makes any sense to me despite honest lot's confidence frank it was a game i felt it just lack real quality.

30:29Yeah, that's my concern, because if Chelsea maybe deserve to win, it's mostly because Liverpool were very bad, except the first 10 minutes of the game. And therefore, you see the game, you say, well, Chelsea, the drawing, yeah, it's not that bad. But when I see the last picture of Fofana laughing about drawing at Anfield Road, yeah, it's a good result, but you're ninth in the league. So you shouldn't laugh. You shouldn't be happy because what you've done before the six nil the six defense that you got before that's shameful. So just, you know, be satisfied with maybe the way you played. And by the way, I was very happy to see Colwell coming back because he was it was missed a lot.

31:14But really, I'm not convinced about neither of the teams of the two teams because Liverpool were very bad. I don't I don't see slot continuing. even if he thinks that he has any solutions to get better because he didn't have since the community sheet that we saw last year, just before the beginning of the season. We saw nothing improving, so I don't see why it would be different. And from Chelsea, I'm very concerned because defensively, it's not there. Offensively, we lost some players. It's not good enough to pretend that you can get something out of it. And I'm very concerned about the future.

31:55Hopefully, they're going to get the coach who will refine, like Michael Carrick from Manchester United, the recipe for Chelsea to get better. Well, Chelsea have changed it ahead of this game next week against Man City. I don't know what they'll do, but they played a back three today. They had some wing-backs. And then they flooded the midfield with Joe Pedro up front. And Arne Slott said afterwards, well, we struggled to cope because of the amount of people. and don't forget Cucurella and Palmer come in there as well and he said we struggled with the midfield because Chelsea flooded the midfield well maybe he didn't know they were going to do that or maybe he didn't know they were going to go to a back three before the game and that graphic's wrong by the way but he certainly did when the game started because he looked at the game and I always say this you know it's not as important to get your tactics right before the game but sometimes you get your tactics and it's not working and that's where the best coaches come along or the best managers because within five ten or twenty minutes of a game they're like right this this isn't working i need to make this change that change and that change because that's going to affect it but he didn't do that he just said after the game wow we didn't expect chelsea to or we they dominated the midfield they had the extra men in there and we didn't really deal with that isn't it his job to cope with that?

33:15Isn't it his job to make those changes rather than just sit in his hands and watch Chelsea have the extra man in there? So, you know, there's a lot of questions about, and obviously there's no question about the Chelsea coach because he'll go back to be doing what he does. But there's certainly a lot of questions about the Liverpool coach and his lack of, I'm going to say, in-game management. It's all very well picking a team to go out and start, but it's your in-game management, particularly when it's not going well. And when Liverpool lost the ascendancy in that game pretty early on after a very good start, he didn't do a lot to change that.

33:47And that would be the worrying thing for me. And as the crowd get more frustrated and more frustrated, he as a manager did not do a lot, if anything, to make a tactical change within this Liverpool team, which he hasn't really done all year. He has struggled from day dot this year to figure out the issues that Liverpool have. He's got a press conference. He said, well, as Xhaka said, well, we'll get to the of the season, we'll spend more money. I know what's the problem. We'll get there next year. If you know what's the problem, why haven't you done something about it in all, what, they played 35 games this year and he's not done much about it whatsoever, which is why we're seeing Liverpool play in the manner in which we see most weeks, which is by their standards, very, very mediocre.

34:34A lot more of what we've seen in the Premier League over on Extra Time. We stay late to answer some of your questions. That is available over on our YouTube channel.

35:10All right. Auto parts.

35:18Evan Cohen here. Game day brings the excitement. Your stay should feel just as memorable with Marriott Bonvoy, official hotel partner of the NCAA and U.S. soccer. You're connected to a portfolio of brands designed for how you travel. Some offer complimentary breakfast. Others give you room to spread out space to stay productive or extended stay comforts. So whether you're a traveling fan or part of the team, Marriott Bonvoy celebrates the moments that live on before and after the game. Marriott Bonvoy, where game day checks in. Now we're turning our attention to Wolfsburg against Bayern Munich.

35:53Wolfsburg trying to survive. However, into the 33rd minute. Now at least he's initially given offside. However, he's okay. So the penalty is awarded, Chad. Only just right back, keeping him on. Very tight call. But once Ole Segar's wrong side, Kulirakis comes across, makes contact. Once it's deemed onside, that was always going to be a penalty. This was not expected. It's his first ever Bundesliga miss. Harry, save that for the World Cup. No, don't save it. Get out of the game. Save it. Save it for the quarter. Save it for the quarter final. The quarter final against Scotland? Yeah. Little John Terry, Frank.

36:35OK, into the second half. Felicek.

36:42Yeah. What a French guy. Yeah, sure. What a French guy. What a French guy. Couldn't do it against PSG. Oh, boy. What a chance here for Svanberg off the post. Why am I even talking about this game? What an important point that would have been for Wolfsburg. Yeah, who are in desperate need in the bottom three in the Bundesliga. Herbig stays big, makes it difficult. That's on the goalkeeper, Dan. That's good goalkeeping. Well, great goalkeeping. Alise's goal then gives Bayern Munich the victory, winning by one goal to nil. Right, hold on, give me the load down in Wolfsburg. Just shut up for two seconds.

37:22Leipzig, by the way, beats the Marling, so Leipzig are guaranteed third place in the table. and that win for Leipzig, of course, gave Wolfsburg some hope in trying to avoid that relegation automatic spot. Heidenheim, meanwhile, in action tomorrow, where they could go on 26 points as well. How close is that at the bottom? A lot of sweat then around Wolfsburg at the moment as Archie Rintuk caught up with Christian Eriksen after the game. Christian, you end up losing 1-0, but you must be wondering how, given the performance, particularly in the first half. Yeah, no, we had our chances and today was one of those days where the ball just wouldn't in, no matter what we tried, also in the end on the post.

38:05So, yeah, I think it was a tough one to swallow, but I think at the same time we had a very good game. Obviously, it now goes down to the wire next week. What do you take away from this game today into what's going to be a huge occasion? No, we can take our belief with us. I mean, we know it's going to be a completely different game compared to today but we've been on this road for a while not getting into this game as the final. I remember when the Heggin came at first he said they might be on into the last game and it is so yeah no for us it's going to be a final for them as well so it's going to be a fun game.

38:41It's going to be an intense game indeed and of course all eyes at the bottom of the table on I9's clash with Kroen that is live tomorrow at 11.30 Eastern.

38:52Meanwhile, Gio Reyna hasn't scored since January 2025 domestically. Well, he put that to right today, playing for Borussia Mönchengladbach. The US international gets a consolation goal late on. Now the US fans will be hoping that this will start a fine run of form for the US attacker. Oh, woesos. Well, indeed. Football America's special on Monday about that. 5 minutes against Stuttgart in the whole World Cup final, 2pm Eastern on ESPN+. Oh, it's been a thrilling playoff so far in the Championship. Wow! Well, the most interesting thing is the spying. Yes indeed, there would be no goals to spy on, that is for sure.

39:33Both of the semi-final first legs finished goalless. The next one will be Monday, Hull against Millwall, 24 hours later, Borough against Southampton. And that is it. That brings us to the end of today's show. So be sure to stay tuned though as Frank Leboeuf returns as we'll be answering your questions on Extra Time, which is coming up now.

39:58Welcome to the latest edition of Extra Time. Thank you very much for most of your questions. First one, Craig. I like to see most of you. Carry on. What is it like in a title race with Celtic and Rangers if Rangers played the day before? How much extra pressure did it put on you as a team? A lot, but more so in the second half of the season. Yes. Obviously, the last game of the season, they played at the same time, which happened when I was there. But, yeah, because of TV, it's a pretty similar thing, and because of TV, as it was Sky, and it is Sky now, one would play on a Saturday, one would play on a Sunday.

40:32Very rarely played on the same day. So you'd always want to play first. Yes. And get the win. Set the standard. Particularly if you were trailing a little bit. I think we went into, around New Year, four points down, and then we whittled that down to a point for the second half of the season. So it was nip and talk. Yeah, there it is. Did you watch? No. Rangers. That sounds like when you were playing. When you were playing, were you watching yourself? Go home and watch it back. Were you looking at everybody else? Look how good I was. I was player of the year. What are you all doing here? What's everybody doing on this pitch?

41:04No, I don't remember watching on the Saturday, watching Rangers if they played. You'd always look out for the result. Right. Particularly in the last six weeks of the season. But you wouldn't sit around... Sit around? Yeah, sit around, etching a diary. Come to my house. Let's watch it. Watch Pirates? Yeah, exactly. No. Did you watch United? What? United? No. Did you watch... No. We were focused on us, Dan. Yeah, that was well. We should have. We should have watched it out, Dan. It was your fault, wasn't it? Well... It was a shaggy spot. You got the blame, didn't you? Chucking all those gold in.

41:41I always do. I always do, Craig. Frank, there were boos when Rio was subbed and after the game. This was in the Liverpool-Chelsea game. Slot obviously came out and said he was subbed because he had muscle issues. Have the fans turned on Slot and is there any merit in him continuing next season, Frank? I don't see that coming. I mean, for me, it worked last season again and I say that every time I have to talk about slots and how Liverpool turn down their performances where when Jurgen Klopp left Arno Slott got his team and and and the heritage of the talent that the players had and the United that they had at that moment so it lasted like six months enough for them to win the title but we saw that the last six months it was going down in terms of result performances and when we thought that they could get the quadruple, the only one, only one, the Premier League.

42:39And then it continued. And I was talking about the Community Shield that I was with Craig at Wembley, where we already saw what was left from Jurgen Klopp, almost nothing. And what Slott brought new players, but no good tactics, I would say, according to what he had. And we saw that team going down and down. So I think that's almost the end of it. I don't see how they can turn it to a better team. He said that they had almost a recipe for next season. I don't know how he's going to do it, saying that he can prepare. But there is the World Cup. So I don't see that coming. I don't think the board will wait, and especially because they have Xabi Alonso available, why they will wait for Slott to find something different.

43:26I think they're going to get rid of him. I think they're going to get Xabi Alonso, and all the fans will be very happy. It's not like you're in a bit of a position where you're thinking about changing manager, but you're worried about what the fan base thinks. I think it's pretty clear that they're fed up with what they're saying. So that, for the ownership, is not a difficult sell now. I think they would snap their hands off. So I think that's the problem for slot. well if you've got the fans on your side then it's more difficult for the board to make that decision but i think as the season's unraveled that ship has sailed for slot unfortunately and i think we saw some of that today in the in the reaction frank you're in a unique position as bloke that blue co owns both of your clubs after a couple of years how do you evaluate their performance for both teams oh my god sorry i'm reading again for most of you Oh, well, it works for Strasbourg.

44:30I have to talk about Strasbourg, you know, and the fans were very concerned. They're very upset at first, complaining to my fellow teammates, former teammate, sorry, Mark Keller. I don't know if Xhaka played with him at West Ham, but great guy and he's the chairman. And I talked to him. He had no choice, but I saved him the deal with Chelsea because that's a great deal. And we see some players coming and leaving but it works and players are very happy and the results are there. They just got out of the Conference League final or semi-final so everything is good in that side but for Chelsea I'm sorry you cannot say it's good.

45:14They made a bet on investments and trading system. It doesn't work that way and we knew that at first at the first at the beginning because we knew that you needed a mix of experienced players and young players and you make a bet on only buying good young players signing there for seven years thinking that they're going to get better and very very good that you can sell them hundred millions after it doesn't work that way a football is different and they should have had advices from from some players maybe former players to make sure that it could have worked. But that way, I'm very disappointed.

45:54Craig, final question. Which feeling of elation was more rewarding to you? Oh boy. You think Craig elation? Yeah, I'm a little concerned already. First goal you ever scored or your first ever hole-in-one? No. No, no. Have you made a hole in one first?

46:25Three. Luckily, one I never saw because I was on a golf trip. I had a late night. Good. No, first goal. First goal? Focus for you the first goal. Where was it? I think it was... By the way, I'm not just saying this. It was a builder. Okay. I think I might be wrong. I think it was Chelsea at home to Everton. And it was from outside the box, right foot, on a slight angle. And the goalkeeper, and some people, Xhaka will know this, was Neville Southall. OK. Who was, at the time, arguably one of the best in the world, right? I think that was my first goal for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Yeah, I think so.

47:13How old were you then? 31.

47:2093, 21. 21 somewhere. Nice. Frank, your first goal, your memories of it? I don't remember. It was with Laval, for sure. But I don't remember. I remember my first goal at Chelsea against Coventry, header. That was something great because you're in England. You scored your first goal at Rome with a header, typically English. So that was fantastic. That's a fantastic memory. But with Laval, I don't remember. I scored many goals I scored 116 goals I think in my career and I'm sorry I don't remember the first year and that's not humble that's just reality 115 115 of those were in Qatar he wasn't running a guitar he was just counting all his money have a look at it have a look this is your first goal somebody sent somebody sent it apparently okay here we go Craig's got the ball, right?

48:18This is, this is right. Oh, here we go. Oh, it's a good goal. It is a good goal. Look, look, look. There you go. Oh, look at him. That was a good goal. Goodness me. Oh, I just hate people that... Take down the audio. Send it to me. Send it to me, Dan. No, you don't want to say it's not that answer. But what is it worth, Dan? I've not had a goal or a hole in one. So there. Hey, did you see Big Nev there in goal? Yeah, yeah. I don't know even why he bothered diving. To your point. Didn't he score in college, huh? What a legend. Yes, I did. I had a couple of goals in college. Shaka, do you remember...

48:56Really good. Do you remember the first goal as a pro you conceded? No. I'm trying to forget all... I'm trying to forget all 484 of them. Was your first club as a pro, was it Reading? Reading, correct. The old ground, what was it called again? Ellen Park. Oh, yeah. Very interesting. Fantastic. That is it. That brings us to the end of today's show. El Clasico tomorrow. Also playing as well. Oh, cast of thousands. West Ham. We don't have to do much work tomorrow. We've got every Tom, Dick and Harry on. Exactly. You'll take that very well, Craig.
