In short

ESPN FC episode recap focused on Manchester City’s FA Cup semi-final win over Southampton at Wembley, plus wider Premier League title-race implications and other English results; later discusses Barcelona’s path to back-to-back La Liga titles.

Guests/backgrounds

No specific guest guests are interviewed in the transcript. Regular studio hosts are Alexis Yunus, Stevie Nichol, and Xhaka Hislop, with match analysts Craig Burley and Aidan (Dan and the boys segment), plus Stuart Robson and Robbo in commentary. Nico Gonzalez is interviewed post-match (City player).

Key claims

City “dodged a bullet” after conceding quickly; Doku’s 80th-minute deflected equalizer was pivotal; City’s changes (Doku, Savinho) improved attacking threat. Phil Foden’s confidence is questioned, with new signings (Cherki, Semenyo referenced) potentially affecting his mindset. Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Newcastle is framed as crucial for keeping pressure on City, with Arsenal likely to “grind” out the title.

Notable examples

Southampton’s Siense finish ruled offside earlier; Southampton lead via Finesse Az; City equalize through Doku’s deflection; City winner is Nico Gonzalez’s “wonder goal” (described as perfect strike into the corner). Also cited: Arsenal vs Newcastle (1-0), Spurs vs Wolves (tight, late goal), West Ham vs Everton (late Wilson winner), Liverpool 3-1 Crystal Palace, and Barcelona’s 2-0 win at Getafe with goals from Fermin and Marcus Rashford.

0:53Hello there, everyone, and welcome into the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Alexis Yunus, alongside Stevie Nichol and Xhaka Hislop. Later on in the show, we're going to be talking about how Barcelona have moved that much closer to securing back-to-back La Liga titles. But first, let's recap everything that happened in England, and for that, we're going to send it out to Dan and the boys. Thank you very much, Alexis. What a treat. Craig and Aidan alongside me. We'll kick things off then with the FA Cup. Manchester City against Southampton. It was not great for the majority of it. Half chances in the first half.

1:27Manchester City, of course, making eight changes to the side that won midweek against Burnley. Southampton thought they'd open the scoring here, however correctly ruled offside. Yeah, absolutely was. But it was a great finish from Siense when he had the opportunity. And in front of Southampton, I'd say he was probably their best player today. I think the threat that he carried down the left-hand side, and unfortunately for him here, and Lefnake stepping up just at the right time, and for me, that is the right decision for us. Kovacic was given a run-out today, Craig, and he almost scored quite the individual goal.

1:54Steve Nicol:He did. I think he planned on trying to play a little one-two here, and then he thought, I'll just keep going. And I think he's gone for the strike there. I don't know if he knew he could have pulled it back. If he could have been able to pull it back a little bit, it would have been an easy tap-in, but the angle was against him. A really frustrating game for Mamouche. Yeah, it was because he got himself into some really good areas, but it's just that final shot or maybe a pass, the way he could sort of control the ball to hold it up for his side. It was disappointing. It was a hot day. They've obviously been there for a long time.

2:28Steve Nicol:I mean, how can you... I mean, as bad as the game was in the first half, there's no new cricket. Hey, if Xhaka can do it, the World Cup final. Rinder's here with a chance. It's in the second half now. Yeah, it just doesn't get any hook spin on it. That's what he was looking for. He pretty much knuckleballed that. And it was just all City and you were just kind of thinking when the chance was going to be converted. Mamouche here. Yeah, sort of a big chance for Mamouche. But in fairness, I thought for City they looked a lot better when they had Dokun Savino out wide. It's so off balance there taking that strike.

2:55Steve Nicol:He just didn't seem to have any confidence today. Great work here, wasn't it, from Cherky on the near side. And once again, Mamouche just can't time his run right. Yeah, it's just a fraction late there. But the ball in from Cherky was a brilliant ball. Do you beat the right form? I think a natural striker sees the run from Cherki early and gets himself in there. Savinho with the opportunity, he'd come on as a second-half substitute. Yeah, the keepers made a good save. I think they were very much pressing Southampton back, and in this one, he probably needs to start a little bit outside the post.

3:23Steve Nicol:Yeah, he'd come on in the full-back, couldn't wait to go off. Yeah, that's true. Cherki then involved once again, his shot blocked. Rinders with a follow-up. Yeah, so he plays that ball to Nikop Gonzalez, so clearly inside the box, he's not as good as he is from outside the box, but getting that ball in transition from Southampton, they had the threat to sort of stretch the game in this way, but we'll watch for them on this occasion. That final finish for mine is just a little bit too forward. But this would be the moment that would give the Southampton fans the hope, and what a moment it was.

3:52Finesse Az with a fantastic goal.

3:54Steve Nicol:Well, Cherkic got disposed of the ball on the halfway line, trying to do one of his little dribbles, and City were, you know, not often on the back foot, but you can see them backpedalling here. he's got a little bit of space but he's got a lot to do gets it out of his feet perfect, James Trafford is the next thing, perfect strike into the corner, absolutely brilliant goal. But the lead only lasts three minutes because Doku's deflected effort makes it way past the goalie. Yeah, that was a big blow for Southampton and I think the timing conceded three minutes after taking that lead it set them back so, so much because they were in treason already and now as soon as it's 1-1 how do you change from that mindset?

4:31It's a lucky deflection from Doku but He'll take it, absolutely. Southampton fans' expression sums it up. They did have a chance to retake the lead here. This was just after that deflected effort. It's good to say from Trafford.

4:42Steve Nicol:Yeah, I think it's comfortable for Trafford. He might see it a little later. It takes a deflection, slight deflection, I think, of John Stones, and it's pretty comfortable. But then, take us through it, Nadeem. Yeah, well, you know, sometimes people don't want to come out to you. You just have to slam it into the top corner, aren't you? But it was a great finish from him. I think he was the man of the match in the stadium today. It's heartbreaking, but you have to respect every one of these opponents because they are capable. Just a little bit late in closing it down, the strike is so, so good.

5:09And unfortunately for the goalkeeper, I think he's a little bit blindside as well, so he starts his dad possibly a little bit late. An incredible strike from Nico Gonzalez. Yeah, it left the Southampton fans, the youngsters, in tears. A late, late chance, in fact, for them to make it 3-1 here on the break, the clearance in the end, off the line. Just, yeah, just a perfectly normal moment in football, isn't it, yeah? I don't know how to I love these Do you know what I love is the commitment from both sides to be both running forward and running back as well And goalkeepers running is always funny Goalkeeper outside of their box is always hilarious

5:45Steve Nicol:I think a lot of respect from Guardiola to what the Southampton manager has done and how they approached it they had to do a lot of defending you can see in the stats that's not a shock we could have told you these stats pretty much before the game we couldn't really tell you what the scoreline was going to be didn't think it was going to be as tight as it was. However, I know he made a lot of changes, Guardiola. I know they've got these five league games to play, and they're in a title race with Arsenal. But they've dodged a big bullet today. They have dodged a huge bullet with that 88-minute goal from Azaz because, I mean, if somehow they could have got through the next five or six or seven minutes...

6:23The timing of the Doku goal was so crucial.

6:26Steve Nicol:The timing of the Doku goal, the deflection, maybe the keeper can done a little bit late if they could have got through that period they possibly and probably would have got to the to the end game now there was seven minutes of injury time but guardiola was a seriously worried man down that technically area that his team because they had huffed and puffed for 80 minutes and the end product just hadn't been there yeah i think that's completely fair and with the end products especially as the game was progressing they'll get themselves into really good areas we thought a nice bit of quality now good pass and that's such a good finish, then the game would be away from Southampton, but it wasn't.

6:59And then when it goes 1-0, it wasn't just Guardiola that maybe was nervous on the sidelines. I was a little bit anxious.

7:04Steve Nicol:Yeah, well, we noticed. I'm not going to lie. I was a little bit anxious because I was looking at the clock and all of a sudden it sent Southampton's favour. Yes. But as you said, the timing of that Doku goal, I mean, from a Southampton perspective, if I was in their shoes and you thought, oh, we've got the lead, everything's great. So all of a sudden, well, it's 1-1 now and we were already on the back foot. How does the game really go from here now that City have the impetus? Unfortunately for them it went the other way. Your impartiality didn't go out the window. It went out of Wembley at that moment.

7:28Steve Nicol:Out the roof. It went flying out on a rocket. Correct. Who has put their hand up from a city perspective, from the squad players, if anybody today to say I'm really pushing for a place in these final five games. We know Cherokee's going to play. We know one or two, you know, but who's put that? I mean, Phil Foden again. I mean, we've got a World Cup. Phil, what's happened? what's happened we've all watched this player right we love young players where's the Phil Foden that turned up at Anfield a couple of years ago and was rocketing balls into the corner you know in between the stanchion he was absolutely out of this world he just made him say to me he's a confidence player but why is someone so talented down in the confidence it seems like Phil Foden do you have a theory I don't I don't I think this has been one of the things with him throughout his City career you could say when things have been going well and he's like playing week in week out and he has a trust of the manager we see some of the best football that we've seen we've seen him win a premier league player of the year but then followed it up with the next year not really being a significant player for the city side yeah and I think for the experience that he's had because he's been at the club for a long time now he's played for a long time when the back end of the season starts that's when Guardiola shows who he trusts and who he doesn't Phil Foden should absolutely be one of those players but when he's in a position to where as I say he's lacking the confidence then unfortunately like it's the right decision to take him off when he did it's his confidence not just in the way he's playing but because he's watched Cherokee come in Semenyo come in all these players come in not necessarily he's not necessarily a wide player but as you know he's played in those wide positions as well he's playing in number 10 now City have two a couple of players for both of these positions now and this almost looks to me and I've seen it at football clubs before where it's not it's not the way that they're playing per se but when new signings come in certain players chins hit the floor because they think oh no right my position in the team is under pressure this guy's better than me look at the skills of Cherokee maybe I'm not as good as I thought and all of a sudden your mindset takes a nose dive and I just wonder if that's what's happening to Phil Ford.

9:32Steve Nicol:Hey wait Robbo says let's get Robbo in. Are we going to do this? Stuart Robson of course calling the game for us. Am I leaving? No no no everyone's staying. No we just we need to shuffle across. Safety in numbers wasn't very good was it Robbo City got away with it this is an age thing one two three I've joined Miami Vice by the way did Man City deserve it in the end they did because they created enough chances they didn't take their chances they took a long time to play at a sort of tempo that caused Southampton a problem and the changes made a difference Doku was outstanding when he came on you know his decision making was good he went past people and Savino not quite so good on the other side but having people that could run with the ball just changed the game I thought for Man City we were just talking before, we were just talking about Phil Foden there, and how a player with such an amazing skill set has drained himself of any self-confidence he looked almost like a 16, 17 year old playing against men, his confidence was so drained, and when you haven't got any confidence it makes you look slower, it makes you look as though you can't make any decisions on the ball and I was really disappointed for him because at the moment he doesn't look a player but how does that change then?

10:38Confidence but then you can't take a confidence peril But do you think? Sorry, how has he got a chance?

10:45Steve Nicol:I'm not sure he can at the moment. He's just got to keep working hard. And I was just saying to Nathan, is it the fact that they've brought in the Semenyos and the Cherokees and these other players that he's all of a sudden doubting himself? Maybe. I mean, he's obviously, he hasn't performed for quite some while now, and you can see the confidence is draining out of him. He's made poor decisions. He got knocked off the ball. He can't affect the game at all. Even when he's defending, he can't really close down and stop anybody playing. How he gets it back, I just do not know. Because he's not going to be given that many more chances.

11:14Because Guardiola is going to pick the team and say, well, Foden doesn't get in it. I think that's the point. You know, if this was early in the season, we're going to talk about confidence. You could talk about sort of drip feeding someone into a team, giving them something to sort of get behind. But with fight, well, it's a cliche, but it's essentially six cup finals for Man City now. If they want to have a chance of winning the Premier League title, they have to win their league games. Even if you're making substitutions, if Man City aren't playing well, you look at the bench and go, who can we bring on?

11:36Steve Nicol:You won't look at Foden and go, I tell you what, he might change the game at the moment. City dodged a bullet today. Not in terms of they dominated the game, but the final foul. And then obviously that goal getting in the 80th minute was a great goal. They were staring at getting put out by Southampton. Now, we didn't have your commentary, or Ian's. Good job you didn't. No, we had Manchester City TV. Yeah, we did. It was their commentary. No, we requested we didn't have your commentary. During the first half, Robbo, I don't know what you were saying, but when we were watching, a lot of the times, City was so narrow We could hear you We heard your half time And you're right, the two full backs were given the width And the two wide players were going infield Cherky was going in there and Foden was going in there And that's what changed In the second half because then Doku went wide And Ait Nuri played through the inside left position And could make those forward runs And it gave them more problems, Southampton But yeah, some of the things that were going on Weren't particularly good in that first half I was just checking my phone because it is now official Arsenal have beaten Newcastle by one goal.

12:39I hear it was a humdinger of a game. One goal to nil. I don't think it was particularly entertaining. I don't think it was much of a thriller. I'm not sure. Do we have the highlights of that? We don't have the highlights of that. There weren't too many. Well, that's it. But that's obviously significant now with regards to the title race. Yeah, absolutely. I think there was lots of talk about City reaching the summit just in the midweek and credit to them for doing that. But it was only going to be for three days if Arsenal did what they needed to do. And the fact that Arsenal have another league game before City play a week on Monday, that is hugely significant because from a confidence standpoint, for Arsenal to get across the line, like maybe it was ugly from what we're hearing.

13:16The fact is they are back to being top again. And if they win the next game, it's a six-point gap to City. You feel all the pressure again. And you look at the sides that Arsenal are playing from now to the end of the season, there are not too many challenges, I wouldn't say. So the pressure is going to be on men's city.

13:28Steve Nicol:But they're not putting teams away. No. But neither are City. Like you think Burnley and obviously today, neither of those were anywhere near what we'd expect. A couple of weeks ago. Yes. I know what you mean. You know what I mean? It's fair. After the Arsenal game, I think it's just going to run away. But he's balancing the fixtures and how they're coming and the games in hand and the changes today. I just thought they made hard work of that today. Bear in mind they're playing against the Championship. All right, they haven't been beaten in three months, but they're playing other Championship teams.

13:58Steve Nicol:Okay, they played Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final, but I just felt that they played into Tate Southampton's hands, particularly in the first half. Nedim obviously sees a lot of Man City, as we all do, but Marmouge today, I thought his movement was good. He made some good runs, and he was actually 1v1 against Harwood Bellis on many occasions, and he didn't make the most of it. He looks like he was, again, we talk about lack of confidence. He got the 1v1, you think, go on, do something, and he didn't quite do it. Yeah, I totally agree. We were speaking about that throughout the game, that he does get himself into some great areas.

14:26Steve Nicol:Well, that was when you were speaking to me and not speaking to Joe Hart, your former Man City player. You seem to be chatting to him a lot more. This is called telling half a story. Oh, really? Because when he then started talking to Joe about where he lived in Glasgow. Does that go on record? That goes on record. We have a Celtic connection. Oh, OK. Not that Joe Hart would like that. But, yeah, you're right with Mahmoud, because he got into some great areas. But you saw one of the issues with him leading the line. The end product itself needs to be cleaner. The way that they deliver the ball to him and so on.

14:53Like the runs in behind, fantastic. Even the ones against Howard Bellis. You think he's going to go and do something. so for him to come off in that manner to have had the potential to have a huge impact and to have had not and even the one when Ducco I think squares it to him and he's leaning back at that end and he hits it over the crossbar and you think that's a great opportunity for a centre forward so he's not quite the player he was at Eintracht Frankfurt

15:12Steve Nicol:he's almost like in a nervous position when the ball's coming to him that is somebody that's I love these shots that's a nervous position I'm just waiting on the Arsenal highlight well I think we've got it now let's take you through exactly what happened of course the pressure on Arsenal to keep up with Manchester City and we've got a lot of pressure on our tetter and it would be Eze who hasn't fitted in as many would expect in this game. That feels harsh. Not fitted in as many would expect. I don't think so this season. Yeah, but see, he does those kind of things more than Odegaard have given an opportunity.

15:46Steve Nicol:Odegaard, nice and tidy. For me, Eze can produce these moments of magic. That's why I was surprised. Sentine Adam, he took him off last week at Manchester. Later on, Tonali with the opportunity. Rhea they're making the stop Arsenal they'll take the clean sheet they will take a 1-0 win and Rhea he's been one of their most significant players this season that's a great save actually he's going one way and he has to go back the other now this will be in the 33rd minute Kai Havertz who of course has been preferred as the front man would be taken off took no more part in the game and then Eze would come off in the 51st minute concern here from Arsenal good old Thomas Tuchel in the stand watching the game in London It's all falling apart.

16:29Now, Pope here would bring down Jokeres. This is only a yellow. What are the goalkeepers doing? I mean, he's miles outside. He goes with the wrong foot. Oh, and then he puts his arm out.

16:41Steve Nicol:Oh, my goodness. It's only a yellow because Jokeres wouldn't score anyway. And then what about this? 80th minute. What a chance that Vise to win it. Well, to get the equaliser. Sorry. He's not been good since he signed for Brent. he's not been good. He was onside as well, made the right run. Of the guys that left Brentford, Mbwemo has been much the better signing for Manchester United, albeit Viss has not had that much football. It was a nervous, edgy 90 minutes for Arsenal, but the fans' celebrations at the end show pure relief as Arsenal win by one goal to nil. And of course, what that means for the moment is that they are three points clear at the top of the table.

17:23Manchester City with a game in hand. Arsenal with four matches to play. Manchester City with five. Goodness me, Robbo, they need it. Didn't really matter. It was just all about the three points today, wasn't it? The three points today gives them that little bit of confidence. They could go and get six points ahead before Man City plays their next Premier League game. But they've also got a big game against Atletico Madrid to play. So, you know, they're going to have to put a lot more energy into that than probably Man City did today because Man City played a lot of their second-string players.

17:50Arsenal are going to have to play their best team over the two games.

17:52Steve Nicol:You could argue that Atleti, a couple of weeks ago, when they knocked Barca out, were favourites. But then their last couple of games, they've gone back to type, haven't they? So that game's a really difficult one to call. But, look, it's crystal clear that Arsenal are not going to win the title by playing good football now. Because they played some decent football in the first half of the season. And then they've played with a lot of fear. Players have lost form and injury, like Saka and numerous others, Zubimendi, Rice has not been the driving force that he was, you know, Odegaard's been out injured, Eze's been sort of in and out, but produces big moments.

18:29Steve Nicol:It's clear they don't have the confidence to go and play the type of football that they did at the start of the season. So it's about grinding their way to this title. And did you see those stats? Newcastle had more possession than Arsenal. Yeah. The Emirates, you'd never have said that in the first part of the season when Arsenal were playing some good football and dominating matches. They're not dominating matches at the moment. But it's been a week with doom and gloom around Arsenal. they get the victory against Newcastle that's one ticked off yeah absolutely is, that's what they have to do the guys are making the point, they have to just win their games but some Arsenal fans have been very precious about the way that we're talking about their team, but it's because we've seen a trend in the way that they've been playing their football and even for today, looking at those stats again less possession at home, Newcastle has created better opportunities but this is an Arsenal side that for me, unfortunately, it's one of them where on a different day, maybe they lose that game They don't seem as dominant.

19:20They say, we saw, as Stuart said, earlier in the season. Look at the game against Sport in Lisbon. It's such a bad performance from Arsenal. At home, they're already 1-0 up. They just didn't play properly. Yeah. And it's the creativity. That's the thing that troubles me the most. Defensively, they'll always be competitive. But with that creativity, that's what can bail them out of games at certain times. And if their key players aren't doing it, it's good that Saka's come back in. But if Eze's going to be out for a while, if Havertz is potentially going to be out, it sort of raises a few more questions.

19:42Steve Nicol:Have Arsenal fans been picking on you? Not me, no. Oh, you guys? I've been mostly neutral. in the comments. Nobody picks on Nedo. How many burner cards? How many burner cards is too many? What are they saying about me? At the end of the day, who's winning it? Between the league, I still think Arsenal will win the league. Do you, Robbo? Because you've got this kind of stigma as an anti-Arsenal voice. No, no. And he wants back in. I certainly don't. Let me tell you, I certainly don't. But I just think Arsenal will win the league. I don't think Man City are going to win every game from now to the end of the season.

Read the full transcript

20:14And I think Arsenal probably will because I look at their fixtures and I think they win the games. So I was very much pro-City in that standpoint, thinking they were going to do it. I think the goal difference thing will be interesting. But from an Arsenal perspective, that last game of the season against Crystal Palace, if Palace make the Conference League final, I think that final's on the Tuesday after the game on the Sunday. So if you were a Palace fan, if you were a Palace coach, and you're going to get ready for the game on Tuesday... So Palace are mailing it in, and that's set here moaning about that.

20:43I'm saying I would rather have that game than play Villa at home with them potentially. A lot of things have worked out in Arsenal's favour. If you look at the draw for the Champions League, everything's been in Arsenal's favour. If you look at some of the... It's kicked it in. But also, the FA Cup, they should have been here for the semi-final. So, you've got Arsenal. What did you say in the end? If you've got Arsenal, I've got to say City.

21:03Steve Nicol:It was on sort of waffle-fetched. Conference League, Christos Alice. I'm just going to say Man City. That's what I want to root for. So, that's what I'm going to go for. Manchester City? Well, today was huge. Not for City. Well, it was huge for City. Today I think was huge for Arsenal. And I just think with their fixtures, they can grind their way out to this title. And nobody at the end of it, when they're engraving the trophy, says it has to be pretty. You just have to get there. And I said to you today, I thought Newcastle might get something. At the Emirates, they didn't, although obviously they were very much in the game.

21:36Steve Nicol:I think Arsenal will grind it out. It turned out to be a pretty good day for the North London side because it was a huge match, wasn't it, for Spurs at the bottom of the table as they were taking on Wolves. Wolves, nothing to play for. However, the way Spurs is going, you're wondering whether or not they could drop the ball here as well. Let's take you through exactly what happened at Molyneux as we take it into the second half. And Xavi Simons will be stretched off here. Doesn't look good, does it? Doesn't look good at all. Does not look good. Again, World Cup on the horizon. Yeah, the suggestion is it's a knee.

22:12So it's still 0-0 as we take it to the 82nd minute. How crucial could this goal be from Palina? Just the guy who expected to score as well, Palina. Just how they drew it up. To be fair, with a slide tackle, that is Palina. But that must have felt like a huge goal for them. But of course, Spurs being Spurs, they won't make it simple. Huge save by Kinski.

22:35Steve Nicol:The fact that this game is as tight as it is with Wolves' position in the league and Tottenham's need tells you how desperate this Tottenham side are. But again, akin to Arsenal, they have grinded out the three points. Yeah, and of course, given the fans hope, meanwhile, they were hoping obviously that Everton could do them a favour against West Ham, who have found a little bit of form. Haven't they? Exactly the right time of the season. We'll take it straight into the second half. West Ham would take the lead. Thomas Suchek. Well, he's done that throughout his career at West Ham. He's won balls in the air.

23:07He's not the most creative of midfield players, but he's dangerous in the air. Now, here there were appeals for handball. Question marks as to whether or not Matias Fernandes had indeed handled it. In the end, nothing was given. Yes. Yeah, exactly. Dewsbury Hall here would make it 1-1, though. Nice finish. Fairly late in the game as well, isn't it? Yeah, very much so. 88th minute, I think. So that's at this point West Ham fans will be particularly worried. Yeah, I've just heard that Spurs have taken the lead. But it would be Callum Wilson who will score that crucial goal in the 92nd minute. Absolute scenes I imagine and that must have felt like such a dagger for the Spurs fans.

23:50Is that Jared Boyne winning the head? Yeah, he's good in the air. Black balls. So it's as you were really then at the bottom of the table will of course Nottingham Forest winning yesterday, thrashing Sunderland. They should be fine, obviously. 39 points, West Ham sitting on 36. Still Spurs on 34 points with just four games remaining.

24:12Steve Nicol:Oh, that kind of brings Forrest a little bit. Right, because we were talking yesterday and we were like, well, Forrest should be fine, obviously. I think Forrest are out of it, to be honest. I don't... Not, well... Not out of it, but... They played well, yeah. I mean, they played... And the confidence must be high. You're just beating somebody 5-0. Gibbs-White. Yeah, Gibbs-White. That's not a convince. I suppose certainly West Ham had a tougher game. Everton are a decent side. I mean, they were even as Liverpool in the derby last week. Not that that's any great shakes, but Davey Moyes has done a good job there.

24:41Steve Nicol:They're a well-drilled side. Wolves are not. So the fact that West Ham had a much tougher game and all right, left it late and won, tells me they're in a better mental position, a better position in terms of the team. And even though Spurs played well last week, how was the game? Was it Brighton at home? Brighton, too. When Dancil made the mistake at the end and they lost the two points later on. They actually played well. However, their struggles today against a very poor Wolves side would concern me. But they won, Craig. There's a little glimmer, isn't there? That they haven't had. What's the glimmer?

25:12They won, they got three points. Nothing changed. But still, we won a game. Surely you know going to training. Surely going to training is going to be much better.

25:21Steve Nicol:It will be. It will be. But you've got to look at would that kind of performance against a better side result in the points, and I don't think it would. I don't think that level of performance, even though it's a win, I don't think the level that they reach today in a game against a dreadful Wolves side is going to get them enough points to stay up. That would be my point. We go back to the Arsenal and Man City and West Ham. West Ham play Arsenal. That is a massive game, both West Ham and Arsenal. On the last day? No, I think it's about It's in a couple of weeks' time. The last day is West Ham against Leeds.

25:59Steve Nicol:And Leeds are probably going to be safe. Yeah, I think so. West Ham are the sort of club that on any day they can put in a good performance, the crowd will get 60 ,000, will get right behind, and make it difficult for the opposition. Could that be the day where it causes Arsenal a problem? I think if we said, who's the team at the moment that you think are going to go, I think certainly from the way I would look at it, I'd have to say Tottenham. Yeah, I suppose. Yeah. it's not in their hands that's the point it's not in their hands I think that's a great point and even though they've won today this isn't something that's happened very often the last one was December 28th are we now assuming that they're going to win their next games I think they're playing Aston Villa away next good luck to them and I think it's made worse still by the fact they either have the worst or second worst home record and I think they had two bad injuries today Solanke I think went off as well two of the key players in the attacking area not good for Spurs I say to Nidham some of those teams in the championship it's going to be a cracking day out at the London Stadium at Tottenham Stadium isn't it what a stadium in the championship listen they sat on their hands didn't they and they thought they thought by changing Thomas Frank that everything would just be all rosy in the garden they didn't look deeper into the problems behind the scenes about the mentality, about the lack of discipline from Romero and others and there has been a little bit unlucky in a sense that that challenge from Brian Broby in the Sunderland game, you know, it really wasn't highlighted enough, the push into Romero.

27:35Steve Nicol:He wasn't even booked for it. He should have had a second yellow and been sent off. But it means your captain's out for the rest of the season. Not that he's the most reliable player ever, but he's certainly one of the more experienced players. But I just don't think they addressed their issues with... And did you see the story about it last week where they were advertising for a sports psychologist, Tottenham. And I'm thinking, you better damn well hurry up and get that guy in a little quick. Did you apply? Yeah, but mine involves boxing gloves.

28:06So all spurs going out? We're all saying that? At the moment, I say so. OK, one more Premier League game I want to talk about is Liverpool taking on Crystal Packs. With Chelsea's wheels just falling off, Liverpool looking good, aren't they, for that Champions League spot? Still questions about Arna Slott's future. Ten minutes before the break, Alexander Izak back from injury, and he gets the opener. It's good for him because he's had a really poor time. When he first went there, he wasn't fit, then he got injured. He hasn't played particularly well, but he bundles it into the ground, but he'll take it.

28:36It's a good finish for him. Bundle's a great way to describe him, by the way. Five minutes later, Andrew Robinson, of course, will be leaving the club at the end of the season. Would make it 2-0 to double Liverpool's advantage. here on the counter-attack. It'd be Woodman who would make the initial save. But Roberson on the rebound. Delighted for him. Good to see he's got that energy as well. I think sometimes I forget he's not actually that old, is he? He's got plenty of life on him yet.

29:03Steve Nicol:He set such high standards from that full-back position, getting up and down, that it was always going to be difficult to keep him going. Now a huge moment here. Mo Salah going down. Of course, we know he's going to be leaving the club at the end of the season. Looks like he's holding his hamstring and of course question marks now as to whether or not this is the last time we'll see him in a Liverpool shirt. Let's discuss more on that in a moment but we would see Crystal Palace get one back. Daniel Munoz with the goal to make it 2-1. I'll figure that out. I think it's a good save by the goalkeeper that's lovely finish with the goalkeeper down but you know not very sportsman like right on my street that is.

29:46And then late on Florian Wurtz makes it 3-1. Yeah, Icen on the cake. Good day all round that I guess. Nice strike. Cuts across it. Oh, you'll get much better than that will you?

29:57Steve Nicol:But I don't think they played particularly well. They didn't. Which is a bit of a crux of the matter of the manager staying or going. Well certainly if you like a bit of expected goals you can see Crystal Palace in fact were the heavy favourites to win it but in the end it's Liverpool who get to the 3-1 victory and solidifying as I mentioned that place in the top five and a Champions League football next season. I don't think they'll run with him next year. What, Slott? Yeah, I don't. I think there's too many questions from up above about spending money again and letting him go. I think the football, again, they've won today.

30:34Steve Nicol:Yes, exactly. So, you know, we're going to talk about Arnie Slott's future later, but they won today. Yeah. They're going to be in the Champions League. So what's the question? The question is, they're in the Champions League. Is Andy Slott going to be the manager? No, it's not going to be their question. That's the most important thing for Liverpool next year. The big takeaway today is, is that Mo Salah's last game? And what a disappointing way for it. That's not the big takeaway today. Of course it's the big takeaway. It's not Arda Slott's future. Oh, they just won 3-1. Is Mo Salah going to be able to pull?

31:01Steve Nicol:Yeah, even with a torn hamstring, he can pull the Liverpool strip on and wave to the fans. No, but it's kind of a sad way for it to end, isn't it? Someone who's been so keen today. Oh, you're such an old romantic, aren't you? Well, the only time you are a romantic, I would say. We're trying to talk about the projective future of how this team's going to play. We've got other times to do that. And you want to talk about a nice pack on a hamstring. Is that what you're asking, Dan? I'm just saying it's a bit sad, isn't it? What, Mo Salah's injury or Arna's not being there? This is it for Salah. He's had a great career.

31:34Thank you, Robbo. He's had a great career in Liverpool, but everybody comes to the end at some point. Look who I'm asking. It all comes to an end, but he's been magnificent for them. You can't argue with that. No, you're not allowed to talk. I can't talk either, please. Next one.

31:50Steve Nicol:Well, you're the nice one. Am I? Naram, push him out. We'll talk about Arnest Lott's future. Yeah, so Salah's future, obviously, you know, it could be linked with Arnest Lott's future. Maybe the two of them are leaving. So there you go. We're back in now. Both things brought in. I think it sums it up, though, doesn't it? If he's not able to play in the final game, which I do believe is at Anfield for that, you know, sentimental... Which, you know, he's been a... Did you have that at Chelsea and Celtic? The old sentimental wave goodbye? Well, no, because they put me in the back of a van and took me out to the training ground in the dark of night.

32:21Steve Nicol:We've all been there. I mean, obviously he'll want to play in that last game if he can, but it won't take away from the fact that he has been, not now, he isn't now at this club, and that's why he's leaving, but he has been such an instrumental player, providing them with some of the most amazing moments. even if Stevie, our colleague gets super frustrated with him at times his stats and his performances have been incredible, so it is what it is you know I don't know how bad his hamstring is but it's not there's more pressing concerns for Liverpool going forward I've got an answer did the producer tell you to go down that road this is magnificent here I can't hear a thing he's saying.

33:10Steve Nicol:I've always taught you, and this is the worrying thing. Think for yourself. Thank you very much, guys. Right, so let's go back to the main game, of course. We're here for Manchester City, beating Southampton by two goals to one. They laboured. There weren't many moments of quality, but one will see Manchester City through to the final. And that was the goal by Nico Gonzalez. Nico up with Alex after the game. Nico, we'll speak about your wonder goal in just a moment, but Manchester City through to a record-breaking fourth successive FA Cup final. How pleased are you with that win? Yeah, really pleased at the end.

33:43It's really important for the club to be in these stages every year, to be able to play and win finals. That's amazing. Last year, this is my second season here, so last year we lost the final and I think that for me at least I have this feeling of really wanting to win this tournament and I hope we get the chance to win. had to come back from behind, needed a moment of magic. You certainly provided that. Talk me through your goalazo. Thank you. Well, to be honest, I had a few chances before to shoot, and I didn't shoot well. I had two shoots before, but they were defending really deep, so I was waiting for the perfect moment to shoot.

34:28I had it there and just went in. I gave everything, so yeah, it went in. What did your teammates say to you after? Well, congratulations, obviously, because they're not used to seeing me score many goals. So it's nice to score in such an important moment in a semi-final to arrive to the final. So it's a really important goal for me. Where does it rank for you in terms of best goals you ever scored in your career? I don't know. I don't know, to be honest. Maybe the best one. I don't know. Last year I scored one that I really like against Bournemouth. but maybe this is the best one. Two more trophies that City could win this season, the FA Cup and the Premier League.

35:13How much belief is there that this could be a really special season for Manchester City? Well, obviously, if we are able to win... Well, first of all, I think that any season that you win any trophy, you can see incredible teams that haven't won trophies in so long. So every season that you win a trophy, I think it's so valuable and so important. and at the end if we have the chance now to win two more trophies and win three trophies in this season, it would be amazing. Can you celebrate tonight or is it straight back to thinking about the title race? Now we, to be honest, I'm travelling tomorrow because we have three days off.

35:51Thank you, Pep. Yeah, because we don't play until next Monday so we have a few days off to enjoy, rest and come back ready for the final matches. Brilliant. Enjoy your time off and well done today. Thank you so much. What would you do with three days off, Craig Burley?

36:11Steve Nicol:Well, I'd watch a lot of videos of the opponents coming up. I see. Video analysis. No quick trip to Dublin, anything like that? Ice baths. Dublin, I've never heard of Dublin. Ice baths, massage. Actually, I saw a video of Brighton players after they beat Chelsea on Thursday getting off to Monday. Okay. and obviously he's getting a couple of days off it's very rare these days now back in the day it's quite normal to have a bit of down time but these players they're not used to it because they send them away with programmes you're having three days off but make sure you do your programmes and I'm all for that Burley was saying why doesn't anyone shoot anymore look what happens when you shoot exactly what he said at half time wasn't it I mean they don't shoot it's not like the old days it's not like the old days midfielders like Robbo getting out of his feet 25 yards and shoot.

37:01I bet you, when he went to shoot, I bet Pep Gornado went, oh, don't shoot. Yeah, he's gone. There you go. Because he took a little time to think about it, and then he actually whacked through the back.

37:10Steve Nicol:Was it Kyle Lahren who'd just come on? He didn't quite get to the ball. Right. You're looking at me with that look. What look? I'm watching the monitor here, look. He doesn't quite get out to close him down enough. And it's a fantastic, fantastic strike. It was Lahren who turned his back on it. That's what you were trying to say, wasn't it? Yeah, yeah. Final third, Sonny Robbo. Final thoughts, did you say? Yeah, about life, this game, whatever you like. Well, he's back tomorrow. I would say that Southampton did as much as they possibly could. They defended for their lives. They played quite well on the counter-attack.

37:41They posed one or two problems. They made it difficult for Man City. Man City, having made all the changes, couldn't find that sort of fluidity. But in the end, when they brought on Doku, when they brought on Savinho, they had the ability to go past people. And I thought that changed the game. Do you want to add anything? I'll come back here tomorrow. You won't do. Yeah, I'm all good. Thanks for that. That's all right. We are indeed back here tomorrow. It will be Chelsea against Leeds, knowing that they'll face Manchester City in the final. That game, of course, will be live on ESPN Plus and ESPN2.

38:11Robbo in the commentary box. It'll be Nadam and Craig and myself here, pitch side. But for now, back to you in the studio, Alexis. Thanks, guys. And to get more of Stevie and Shaka's thoughts on everything that went down today, make sure to check out Extra Time.

40:38Well, Barcelona would travel to Getafe and walk away with a two nil win. Thanks to gold from Fermin and Marcus Rashford. This now increases Barcelona's lead to 11 points clear at the top of the La Liga table with only five games to go. Let's hear from Hansi Flick.

40:55Steve Nicol:You have the feeling after the draw of Real Madrid yesterday, a winning today is almost to touch the title with the fingers. Almost. No, we don't focus on the game yesterday. Focus just on our game. We played today against Getafe. It's a good team. the last 10 when you see the last 10 games they are second on the league so it's it's a it's uh it's a tough uh today tough tough to play against them and we have to play like i always said our best place all right hansi flick being very diplomatic there but i think all of us can say that barcelona at least have one hand or a couple of fingers on that la liga trophy this is how they have left for the rest of the season.

41:39Xhaka, if we look at both their run-ins for Real Madrid and Barcelona and the chances of Real Madrid catching them looking very, very slim, it looks like Barca could crown themselves at home for El Clasico. Yeah, if results go their way, if Real lose at Espanol and Barca win at Osasuna, they crown champions next week, which is a preferred option for Barcelona and Hansi Flick. But you push it on a week, you have the opportunity to win the title at home in the classical and look for the fans how much that will mean and kind of getting to rub it in the face of of your your most uh heated rival but as players as this game will will keep telling you you get it done as soon as you can also sooner the preferred option i know what the fans will prefer but for for handsy flick it's just about one game at a time making sure and getting it done not allowing for any slip-ups or any kind of major embarrassment, which I don't see coming, but I can say that I'm sitting here in the studio.

42:39Yes, I'm sure Barcelona would rather have it clinched by next week in that game because then Real Madrid would be forced to give them, we will see, a guard of honour in El Clasico at the Camp Nou in front of what's going to be quite a hostile crowd for Los Blancos. But either way, the ball's easily in Barcelona's court. Oh, big time. I mean, honestly, it's over. It's over. It really is over. But if you're a fan, particularly, because as Xhaka said, the players don't think about the Guard of Honor and all the other stuff. They just want to get it done. It's your rivals, Real Madrid, come on. Well, once you get it done and that falls into your lap, then, boy, are you going to lap it up?

43:17The only people that are thinking about it really are the fans. You imagine being a Barcelona fan. Oh, my day. How many said it would be? Your team getting clapped and the Guard of Honor from Real Madrid. Oh, it doesn't get any better. I think we're going to have a couple of Barcelona fans there for El Clásico. Luis Garcia, Gemma Soler, they're going to be happy as ever. And we would love to see you join us as well, not in Barcelona, but at the Torch at the Los Angeles Coliseum for our El Clásico watch party. That's May 10th at 10 a.m. Pacific time. 45:14Freshly crowned Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich took on Mainz earlier today and Vincent Kompany made many changes to his starting XI as they prepared for their clash against PSG in the Champions League midweek. No Harry Kane, no Alize and no Musiala for the XI, but they eventually would come on and Harry Kane would help rally the troops back as they came from behind to win 4-3. Here's Harry Kane after the game. What a crazy game. It seems that Bayern needs you, Musiala and Alize to win this game. Yeah, to be honest, it was a crazy game. We knew in the first half it wasn't good enough. We set standards in every game we play and then we didn't quite reach that and we got punished for it.

45:56We set at half-time to go full gas and see what happens, you know. And I think regardless of the result, it was the attitude that changed and yeah, you saw. We don't care if we've won the league, we don't care what type of game it is. We take the game to the very last minute and we've done that again today. Yeah, we've won the league so there's going to be rotations at this stage of the season. But the main thing is everyone's ready. We have a big enough squad to prepare well. And, you know, wins like this just keep momentum. We go into a tough game against Paris on Tuesday. If we lose today, you know, it's maybe stop some momentum a little bit.

46:28Now with the comeback, we're ready to go. Are you looking forward to Paris? Yeah, of course. Tough game. Semi-final of the Champions League. That's where you want to be. So, yeah, looking forward to that challenge. Looking forward to that challenge indeed. And I think all of us can agree that that is the matchup that we're looking forward to in the Champions League. I mean, no offence to Atleti and Arsenal, but this is where it's at. What did you make of what Harry Kane had to say, Stevie? Yeah, and that's what the best teams do. You know, you can see with the line-up that started the game, it was all a bit easy-ozy and we're looking at midweek.

47:01But then once you lose a goal and then another one, that competitor and the players and the manager, it kicks in. And so clearly at half-time, there was a few words said. And that's the way it should be. And then they come out in the second half, they make the changes. And, well, you expect a better performance, but you don't expect them to come back and win 4-3. I certainly didn't. I mean, the company made the point that those changes were always planned. Yeah. And there's no reason not to believe that. Kind of given the fact that they have this big game coming up on Tuesday and players like to get themselves into a rhythm.

47:37And while, OK, you've won the league, so you don't have to focus on that too much, so you can afford to give the likes of Kane and Olysee a little bit of a rest. They still want to get a touch of the ball. They don't want to be going a week or 10 days or whatever it is between playing in the league and winning the league and then the Champions League fixture. They just want a little bit of a run out. But as Stevie says, league one or not, you're 3-0 down, just a kind of professional competitor in you. You are trying to get yourself back in it. Now, if you don't win it, nobody's going home and losing any sleep.

48:14But in the moment, that's the focus. And Bayern, as they've shown all season, are just far too good for anybody in the Bundesliga. I still think they're the best team in Europe. Tuesday will go somewhere to determining that. In this situation, my old coach used to say, go out, get a sweat on, get the heart pumping, and you'll be fine. Well, Manchester City booked their spot in the FA Cup final. So who will join them? We will find out tomorrow as Chelsea face Leeds. These are the odds to win. And it's Chelsea. No surprise that despite all their issues domestically, our favourites to win this one.

48:52Chelsea? Yep, I said it. How's Chelsea? Can Chelsea possibly be favourites? All right, give me a prediction. Well, Leeds won. Leeds? That comes as a surprise. Shaq? I'm going to go Leeds 2-1. Leeds 2-1. We'll find out in 24 hours and talk about it on tomorrow's show. See you then. Most protein drinks ask you to choose between results and taste. 50:33Got it. Chickens. You talk about chickens? You know, never count your chickens before they hatch. I mean, you could be hopeful. You could really think that's what we were talking about, yeah. Alright, shall we get to some questions? Oh, first one. It's about my good guy, Andy Robertson. So, now Andy Robertson has decided to leave Liverpool at the end of the season. has Robertson replaced Stevie Nichol as the greatest Liverpool left back in history? No, I'll answer that question. Or is Stevie Nichol still the number one? Stevie's still the number one. What is your head telling you and what's your heart telling you?

51:09Both are saying Stevie Nichol. I've always said... It's not even a competition. Yeah. It's not even a competition. Oh. I've always said Shaq Aisselot knows his onions. Yeah. But does he know his football? Oh, don't know about that. I'm a little biased. I'll say me. Oh, fair enough. But Robbo's definitely... No, no. Absolutely. Give him his flaws. Andrew Robinson, outstanding left back. Outstanding. Great story. When people will talk about that, because you know people will. Yeah. He'll be in the conversation, 100%. Absolutely. But just the hairline away from Stevie. Well, everybody likes different things, so I'm sure there'll be...

51:52Some will have Andy first, and that's fine. I don't fall for this humble Stevie. I know. I'm sure some people have their opinions. No, they won't. No, they won't. No, they won't. There's only one Stevie Niko. There's Stevie Niko. Shut her. Don't miss a shooter. Ready? Shut her. Never mind. There's only one Stevie Niko. Give yourself a cheek. One Stevie Niko. There's only one Stevie Niko. You see the nicest things about it? Never mind all that nonsense. Woo, woo, woo. Everyone will have their opinions. No, it's Stevie. I was very PC for a while. That was wrong. Stevie, you're always number one in our books.

52:30And you know I love me a rabble. You know. Next question is about Stevie again. What is Stevie's prediction for who gets relegated in the end between Spurs and West Ham?

52:44I was trying to figure out what the noise a cockerel makes, but I couldn't think of it. I'll just say sponsor. Because I don't know the noise a cockerel makes. Here's who they have next. If you look... Sorry, Shaq, go on. I was going to say, I think Forrest will stay, you know. Yeah, Forrest, I think... I think Forrest, I'm sure enough. But Spurs... Hold on, Forrest is a tough run there, you know. Forrest is a tough run there. Yeah, Forrest is a tough run. But they're scrappers. I think Leeds beat Burnley. I think Leeds will be alright. Leeds will beat Burnley. And they'll be alright. West Ham.

53:21Brentford, Arsenal, Newcastle, Leeds. Oh boy. Don't you think it's between Forrest and West Ham and Spurs? I think it's between West Ham and Spurs. Yeah. And I think... Forrest have some European ambitions as well. I think... Well, it's not holding them back right now. No. No. Them and Leeds are pretty much flying. I think that's how they're finished. 15, 16, 17, 18. You think it stays like this? Yep. I think it stays just like that. Yep. Alright, that's your prediction. Yep. It stays as is. Next question now Any issues with the goal Crystal Palace scored today? Not me You're the goalie Oh, when the goalie went down?

54:01No, no, I don't Back to you Listen, if the goalie's lying there with a broken leg And a bone sticking out his leg It's so graphic If his leg fell off If it's so clearly But Arnazat was fuming after the game. Why? He said that they should have stopped play. No. No, he's not. By the way, surprise, surprise, the goalkeeper got some treatment, got a little sponge, a little squirt of the bottle on his knee. Magic spray? Yeah. A little cuddle from the trainer. And all of a sudden he was all right. He played the rest of the game, no problem. Tough luck. Hey, unlucky. That's the way it goes. Yes, his boat wasn't sticking on his legs.

54:50That's a play on if I've ever seen one. Stevie, do you think what Craig, of course, was talking about Arnest Slot in our segment earlier on ESPN FC, what did you make of what you had to say? Should Liverpool stick with Slot? I kind of tend to agree with Craig that... It's time. Well, the key is... Up until maybe three weeks ago, I was like, you know what? if he gets to the Champions League next season because he won the Premier League last year he deserves a little bit of time but the more I'm thinking and the longer it's going on and the worse it's I mean would you trust Anaslaught having just spent I know they brought a lot of money in but having just spent about what 300 million on new players and every single one of them has been a dud so far would you give Anaslaut another 300 million?

55:47Because that's what Liverpool need to spend. Wow. You've done a full 360. Well yeah. All the other things I was thinking about. He did too. All the other things I was thinking about I think are rational thoughts. But when it comes down to it, if you're writing a check, you've already given a guy 300 million and you've made a mess of it. Do you really want to give him another of 300. Wow, Shekka, what did you think? Yeah, so I'm with Craig and it's Craig saying that he thinks this is Arnaz Lotz last season. I kind of feel the same. I feel the same for the last few weeks. And one of the reasons being, if you're talking about the replacement for Arnaz Lotz, there's a ready-made name in Xavi Alonso.

56:31And I'm not sure that you just leave Xavi Alonso there available while you try to figure out what's happening with Arnaz Lotz. If you decide to go six months without a slot and you can't, and then you decide, well, no, it's not working out. It continues as we saw this season. But why do you feel Xavi Alonso would do better than now? Well, you don't know until he gets there. But Xavi Alonso, despite it didn't work out very well at Real Madrid, I think there are reasons for that in terms of power of the player within that dressing room. but you cannot question the job that he did at Leverkusen. And also just his affiliation with Liverpool Football Club.

57:16He's shown that he's a good manager. If we sit here right now and talk about all the clubs who are looking for good managers who are available right now, there's only one name. Maybe if we throw Maresca in there, two names that come to mind. So now if you're Liverpool and you have somebody like Xavi Alonso who's played for the club, who showed himself to be a very good manager, Do you say, well, let's reassess in six months when anybody else can come and take Xavi Alonso at that point? I think you move now while you can get him because I don't think it's worked for Anos Lott this season. All right.

57:53Stevie, wow. Change of heart. Yeah. How he's broken you. No kidding. He's been torture. Oh, it's been torture. It's been a long season. Hi. Now you'll just suffer a bit more at the World Cup with Scotland. Just goes from suffering to suffering. Unfortunately, you're probably going to be right. Yeah, yeah. All right, next question. I'm not suffering at all either, because Jamaica and Trinidad decided we didn't want to go to the World Cup, apparently. I'm still going over it. Next, Xhaka and Stevie. If Bayern win the Champions League and Harry Kane wins the Golden Boots, but England lose to France in the World Cup final, a bit ambitious, who should win the Ballon d 'Or?

58:34Olisse or Kane? Well, first of all, it depends on Olisse's performance in the World Cup. But, kind of given what you've seen from him, Bayern, what you've seen from him in the France shirt, there's nothing to suggest that he's not going to be outstanding again in the World Cup. If he is, and France wins, I give it to Olisse. Can we just preface this that Xhaka has already aligned himself with France. He has said that that is now his team since his country didn't make it. And I've probably jumped on that bandwagon as well but Stevie I'm gonna okay I think if you take Kane out of Bayern Munich it hurts Bayern more than the lease in Auckland okay what about for England?

59:21I don't care about England You have to factor in England You're talking about a Scotsman remember? You're talking about Scotsman

59:34So you're going with Kane, Shaka's going with the league. I hope Harry Kane gets a little nick and is not available. He's in the squad. Not bad. Just a little nick. No bones coming out. He's just not fit enough to play. Yeah. And then he'll get knocked out. Early. Just not fit enough and he'll be ready for the second stages, but they don't get there. Oh, fair, fair, fair. That's the perfect scenario. Because I don't want him to harm to Harry, he's a good lad. No, but England. Just enough to keep him out until they get knocked out. We should keep this and clip it for when Kay and Dan are back. Next question.

1:00:08Xhaka and Stevie. Which striker should Barcelona target as Lewandowski's successor? Julian Alvarez. Wow, that was quick. Yeah, that's all I got. Harry Kane. Come on. Barcelona can't afford a Harry Kane right now. Who can Barcelona? That's the next question. That's actually a big question. Every time Barcelona signs somebody, they pull in more levers. They have to wait until somebody gets injured. Financial gymnastics. Alexander Izak. Alexander Izak. Oh, boy. He scored today. He's on fire. He's on fire. I'm only kidding. He's back. Listen, it's just a boss for Izak this year. Forget what you're saying right now.

1:00:50The guy's never been fit the whole season. That horrible injury he had. So just judge him on next year. Can I give what we've been talking about, about Barcelona's financial difficulties? Would you take a gamble on a Mo Salah? On a free? No. If you're Barcelona? Yeah. No, I remember how much money he makes. Anyway, his contract is not making that. Yeah, but he's off. But then...

1:01:25oh Mo Salah if Mo Salah Mo Salah right it's all about them if he's all about the money he's he's going to Saudi right yeah yeah yeah Mo Salah culture and stuff too if Mo Salah wants a legacy the way it is he goes to Saudi he's not playing bad with Liverpool because it's just Liverpool's fault. He's definitely lost something. Yeah. And so if he goes to Barcelona... He'll just be on display a bit more. Well, he'll just be the same. And where's he going to play, by the way? He's playing at number nine. He's playing at number nine for Barcelona. I'm just throwing it out there. He's not a number. I'm just throwing it out there.

1:02:11Give him... Right, we've discussed Barcelona's financial issues and pulling levers and all that. I'm just... Food for thought. Yeah. Yeah, I wouldn't do it. If I was him, I wouldn't do it. You wouldn't do it. If I was Mo Salah, I wouldn't do it. I don't think Barstar's thinking. Go to a standard that's a little lower than the highest standard. Wow, how that might be a goal. And still score tons of goals. And enjoy yourself doing it. The Egyptian king, Steve is saying go for lower standards. If I may say this to myself, I forgot. Imagine how he's going to be worshipped there as well. Yeah, yeah.

1:02:44So you're going to score tons of goals, you're going to be worshipped. You're going to be the poster boy. You're going to get paid a fortune. You're going to be the poster child, the whole nine yards. And that will just carry on from being the poster child at Liverpool. Instead, you're going to take a gamble and go to Barcelona and end up not playing. Sorry, makes no sense. Xhaka, you're proud of yourself for that, aren't you? Yeah, I was. I thought that was a really good question, you know. Well, it sparked conversation. It sparked conversation, but Stevie said rubbish. Barcelona actually are heavily linked with Julian Alvarez.

1:03:14We just know that they cannot afford him right now. So we will see what happens eventually. Because they do have many financial levers that they can activate. Next question. Barca are about to win the league with the fewest goals conceded in La Liga. So far it's just 30 goals against in 33 matches. Where is the highline criticism now? Ask TV. So this is the lowest goals? Are we supposed to clap because they've lost 30 goals? Yeah, well, it will be the fewest goals conceded in La Liga. 30 goals against in 30 minutes. You mean in Liga season? Yeah. Not like... Across the board. Not like for the last 10 years or something.

1:03:58Currently, they've got the best defence in La Liga. When we criticise them for not having. On paper. On paper. What's the comparison? Is Real Madrid's back four who have had to deal with a ton of injuries? Listen. again, let's not take anything away from Barcelona. That's an uh-oh. Deserved La Liga champions. Deserved La Liga champions. But if it's about a high line that has seen them crash out of the Champions League at whatever stage it is, that's been exposed from time and time again domestically and in the domestic cups, yeah, I think the high line is still, should be criticized. I think it's suicidal attempts.

1:04:43Do you? Yeah, 100%. You're not a fan. Just because teams haven't taken advantage of it doesn't mean that what they do is correct or good. And let's be honest. Nobody from all the top teams around Europe or anywhere else are going to Barcelona and offering money for QBAC or Martin or Eric Garcia. I mean they're not. They're just not. So you can spin things a lot of different ways on paper. But the truth of the matter is because they've lost so few, they've gotten away with it. They've gotten away with it because they've been able to outscore opponents. As we've seen in Champions League and in Copa del Rey.

1:05:32Except for Madrid and whoever else it was. But anyway, it's still with your criticism. Nice try, Javi. Yeah. Unlucky, Javi. Try again. Try again tomorrow. Sorry, Javi. We're back. Final question. Stevie, who was the most underrated teammate you played with at Liverpool? Oh. Good one. Underrated. Who deserves a bit more props? I'll tell you who I think was. Gary Gillespie. Gary Gillespie was a centre back and Gary was if Gary was playing today all the teams would want him I mean you talk about passing the ball out from the back it was just unfortunate that he followed in the partnership of Alan Hanson and Matt Lawrenson and so he could never when Lawrenson left when he played with Big Al he could never get rid of the shadow of Lawrenson and he got injured.

1:06:35He got injured quite a bit and so that curtailed him as well. But yeah, Gary Galicia was a fantastic football player. Big guys, we should call him up. Hi, give him a call, Gary. Give him a call. Great guy, great player, good defender. I mean, just, yeah, absolutely, 100%. Never got the, in my opinion, never got the kudos that he deserved. Shaq, what about you, an underrated teammate? David Batty. defensive midfielder but ball-winning midfielder but could pass the ball and I don't think anybody ever appreciated that and how technical he was. Whenever you play those you know you play little keepy-upy games or whatever it is David Bathie would always win and you know you never associate Bathie with that kind of with that side of the game.

1:07:27The thing I remember about him was his stare. Yeah. Oh. He did his stare. What was it like? Well, what was it like? What was it like?

1:07:39No, I remember we played him at Anfield and I was running with the ball and I knocked it too far. And when you knock it too far, usually what happens is you get a little bit of the red miss because you've knocked it too far. And I ended up going in. It was a dangerous tackle and he saw it and he managed to get out of the way and I just clipped him and I just remember getting up because he obviously understood we understand when somebody's trying to do you and when it's just that sort of situation yeah but he just stood there and I remember turning around to give him one of them because I didn't mean either and he just gave me Yeah, yeah.

1:08:19I was like, ooh, he's not happy. Ooh, you love it though. He could look after his self-back. Yeah, he could. Yeah, he could. All right, that's it. That's it for this edition of Extra Time.
