In short

ESPN FC/Extra Time episode focuses on Premier League title pressure and squad rotation, plus La Liga and a separate Champions League-style roundup.

Guests

Dan Thomas (host), Craig Burley (former player/analyst), Stevie Nicholl (former player/analyst), Mark Ogden (journalist; attending World Cup draw). Later, Sid Lowe and Luis Garcia join for La Liga analysis.

Key claims

  • Chelsea manager Maresca is rotating too much; leaving Neto and Reece James on the bench vs Leeds cost intensity and momentum.
  • Arsenal’s depth and defensive solidity (Timber at RB, White shifting to CB) make them “hard to beat”; they’re five points clear.
  • Liverpool’s 1-1 vs Sunderland shows defensive breakdowns and poor work-rate; Virgil van Dijk is singled out for the goal (turning sideways, not closing down, captain leadership failure).
  • Real Madrid’s 3-0 win vs Athletic is attributed to energy/commitment and Mbappé’s confidence, not just tactics.

Notable examples

  • Chelsea lose 3-1 to Leeds; Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-0; Villa beat Brighton 4-3; Liverpool draw Sunderland 1-1.
  • Real Madrid beat Athletic 3-0 with Mbappé scoring twice; Courtois makes a key save.

0:00Alejandro Moreno:Are all batteries the same? That's like asking if all soccer players are the same. Take Messi, the most decorated player ever. Is there any other player who has achieved that? No, just him. Now take Duracell. Is there any other battery with Power Boost ingredients inside? No, just Duracell. Remember, goats only trust goats because they're built different and Messi only trusts Duracell.

0:34Craig Burley:Welcome to the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Dan Thomas, joined by Craig Burley. Stevie Nicholl is here as well, as is Mark Ogden, who will be going to the World Cup draw tomorrow. I thought he'd stop in and say hello ahead of that big draw on Friday. Meanwhile, big matches in England on Wednesday. We saw some important results. Aston Villa's great run continues. They would win away against Brighton. Forest and Palace would pour on the misery on Wolves and Burnley. Liverpool 1-1 against Sunderland. Meanwhile, big surprise. Leeds beating Chelsea by three goals to one. It turned out to be a great day for Mika Arteta's Arsenal as they won by two goals to nil, meaning that they have five points clear at the top of the table, now nine clear of Chelsea.

1:16Craig Burley:Blumenet, Craig, where this comes from from Chelsea. They're three points behind Villa, who couldn't win a game at the start of the season. I thought they were excellent for the most part at the weekend against Arsenal. I think everybody did. So that's why it's almost a bigger disappointment now if you're a Chelsea fan. Because you think, well, if we could do that with 10 men against Arsenal, what the heck are we doing today? What I don't get, and we just see this all the time now, a lot, is two of the best players that they've had, and certainly from the weekend, Neto, who's one of the most dangerous players.

1:47All right, Esteval is a youngster who does some brilliant stuff, but Neto has been consistently playing well for them. And Rhys James. Rhys James. And I know he's had a lot of injuries, right? but not recently. He looks back to peak fitness. He looks sharp. He looks strong. He was playing in midfield against Arsenal and he was excellent. Really calm. Good passing in the ball. All that sort of stuff. Those two were on the bench tonight. Yeah. Because somebody's telling managers and we know who they are. Oh, you know, they played in the weekend. They've got a lot of big games coming up. But you've got to put some momentum together.

2:21Craig Burley:Yeah. You've got to put a run of results. You've got to keep putting the pressure on and you're not going to do that. You're unlikely to do it if you're leaving your best players out. Chelsea are not good enough to leave their best players out. Maybe City a few years ago when they were dominating English football. Arsenal today could do it, obviously. Arsenal could do it because they're top of the league. They've got a little bit of a gap and they've got a really strong squad. And they're at home to Brentford. They're away to Leeds. I think Augie was saying just before we came on, Leeds have lost, what, one game?

2:50Once at home in about 18 months. Like you say, you're going to well enrolled against a team that's fighting for points. You don't rest your best players. There's certain games you pick and choose in home games when you've got an easy afternoon. But Leeds away, silly. But it just seems we see this a lot now. And that'll be the excuse from Maresco come out and I'm sure some of the journals will say, well, what about your team selection, Mag? Listen, I've got a lot of games, injuries. When you play like how... So, Chelsea, they beat Burnley away. It wasn't a great game, but they ground that out. They were excellent against Barcelona.

3:23they were excellent against Arsenal with ten men as a player you just want to keep going you never you never really feel tired when you're winning the tiredness only comes mentally when you're when you're in this sort of losing better Liverpool you know who had a real struggle so I just don't understand and yeah Caicedo wasn't available but that's not the reason that they lost today you They just got outworked by Leeds and I think made at least too many changes. No team's going to be able to put a run of 12, 13 games together the way City did the last few years. When you keep continually changing the team every time it steps on the field, I was talking about standards that Chelsea set against Arsenal.

4:05But then they step on the field with changes up front, changes in the middle, albeit forced in the middle, and changes at the back. So how are you expected to keep your standards up when you're making all these changes? I mean, it makes no sense at all. And again, and I've said that a million times, how about you start Rhys James and you start Neto, and then when you see them looking as though they're a little tad, then you take them off. Do it the other way. Don't bring them on for the last half an hour when it's too late and you're chasing the game. I mean, it's just, you know, people keep, people talk to us about, oh, you're old school.

4:42Well, there's a lot of things that used to happen that were the right things, and they worked. but all of a sudden everybody's throwing them out the window and this is how we do it now well guess what, the way you're doing it now particularly Merezka, it's not working See last season it was different because he had the Conference League so what he would do, he would play his best plays in the Premier League and basically the other 12 or 13 would play in the Conference League so that's how he was getting his games in but now obviously Champions League you can't treat the Champions League like the Conference League so he has to play all his players and he's probably rotating too much isn't he there's no consistency there.

5:16At the weekend, Charlebran for Farnham against Arsenal at centre-half played really well. Changes it. Why he's doing it, I don't know. But he's probably thinking, well, I've got Christmas coming up, a lot of games, we've got a game at the weekend, a game in the Champions League next week. He's just made the wrong call at the wrong time.

5:29Craig Burley:Arsenal, meanwhile, loving life. Yeah. You've got a makeshift back forward pretty much, but you go in, the squad is so full of confidence, they didn't look like losing today really at all, did they? Well, I think the key for Arsenal, when Mosquera went off injured, he puts on timber at right back, So Ben White then goes from right back to centre-half and you don't even notice the joint. But they're missing Saliba, they're missing Gabriel. They've got so much depth. I think they lack a bit of X-Factor, a bit of star quality in terms of like, you know what, Chelsea have got that explosiveness. But they're rock solid.

5:54And at every position, apart from maybe Odegaard in midfield, they've got a couple of fours. And that's why the five points are at the top of the league and looking really strong.

6:01Craig Burley:And you've got Marina coming in, making an impact. Well, they finally got their number nine, didn't they? I mean, a bit Xhocarez was sitting thinking, I wish the Haralds were getting some of those crosses. I mean, he did get one at the end against Chelsea that Timber took off his head. But he does do a great job. You know, he is against Chelsea in the first half. Nobody gave the ball away, I think, for Arsenal more than Moreno. And then he pops up with important goals. And he did again tonight. He's done a great job for Mikel Ateta. It's theirs to lose, isn't it? Even this early in the season, it's theirs to lose.

6:32Craig Burley:Can we just take a look at the Premier League table again, just to remind... After the Chelsea game, we go, maybe they could push it, maybe they could do something. but it just feels like one result has completely changed that narrative. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, to be fair, maybe we kind of got too excited about the performance Chelsea gave us against Arsenal because we had been talking all season about how you can't really trust them. You know, we know what they're capable of, but they don't always show it. And then they produce that performance against Arsenal and you think, OK, because of the problems that we know City have, That's why we've not discarded them, but we know the problems.

7:13OK, now we've got somebody who maybe we can hang a hat on, who can actually put some pressure on Arsenal, who can chase them, force them into doing things they maybe wouldn't do. But then they turn around, the manager picks the wrong team, the players that do play don't produce the... Certainly the intensity was nowhere close to what it was against Arsenal. And so we're kind of back to where we started.

7:36Craig Burley:Yeah, we're kind of picking and choosing who we think are the next title contenders. Manchester City, OK, sitting second. But we saw yesterday that vulnerability at the back. It's difficult to put an argument as to why consistently they're going to put a run together. Yeah, I mean, you look at Villa. I mean, if Villa beat Arsenal at the weekend, then maybe Villa are back in it. But they've never been in it in the first place. So you wouldn't trust Villa to be the challengers. And Man City, like you say, unreliable at the back. And if Erling Haaland gets injured or misses any period of time, then who scores the goals?

8:02So, for me, Arsenal are the best team. And I can't think of a league season like this in many years whereby the second-best team has been so far off the best team. There's just not a direct challenge. There's nobody there that can... I mean, the league is so poor this year that Liverpool and Man Utd could both qualify for the Champions League, which is crazy considering how they've had the season so far. I mean, we were sitting here, I don't know, three weeks ago, whatever it was, talking about City. And people were saying, well, you're talking about their defence and their defensive record at the time wasn't that bad.

8:30And it wasn't. They were saying, well, you know, but the last three or four games, that's gone out the window. It's completely gone out the window. I mean, they were hanging on against Leeds. Ten. We lost ten goals in the last four games. So, I mean, that... City could do business in January. A lot of clubs, I think, are looking out the window, but City have got a headroom to spend. They like Semenyo at Bournemouth. They like Elliot Anderson. Semenyo's not a defender. But didn't they do a lot of business last January? Yeah, and in the summer. And we were there. Where's Mamouche? They're all sat in the stand.

9:03How can you be in a position, a club like Man City, you knew you were losing some of your key full-backs, you had the summer to address it, they're still playing Matthias Nunez at right-back, and Nico O 'Reilly at left-back. He's a very good player, but he's not a left-back. You sign that Nuri from Wolves in the summer, I mean, I'm fed up saying this. He's a good footballer going forward, he can't defend. Well, what City have done, they've signed lots of players over the last two or three windows, who haven't been as good as the ones that they've replaced. substantially different certainly in terms of De Bruyne and Riders but for me they haven't addressed the Rodri situation, Rodri to me looks like he's really struggling to get over his injury and they brought in Nico Gonzalez in January hasn't done well, they were expecting Rodri to be back this season and Rodri would have kind of locked the door in front of the defence, he's not fit he's struggling and that has left a real problem in the team so I think if City can address that in the window like I said they like Elliot Anderson £100 million for the midfield in January, I can't see Forrest selling but if they get something like that in and Semenya, then that would give City a bit of a better answer.

10:03That's going to be tough, though. Absolutely. You're talking about a Ballon d 'Or winner. Elliot Anderson. Yeah. I mean, Rodri is a guy that won the Ballon d 'Or who gets a bad injury and you know it's going to take time when he comes back. I mean, even... You know they've been scouting, you know they're looking at people, but they're never going to... You can't replace Ballon d 'Or. He came back in June and they were expecting this season that he was having his kind of pre-season during the Club World Cup, get a couple of games under his belt, and they expected by the start of this season, or certainly by now, he'd be back playing again.

10:37And he's just struggling. He's picking lots of injuries, hamstring problems. So clearly, I mean, he's had a cruise ship, it's a bad injury. So he's clearly struggling to get back to anywhere near his belt. But that's a big ask for any player. I don't care how good you are, to come in and all of a sudden the back door's one player, the back line's protected. They knew the full-back position has been key for them. and key for them tactically as well, how he plays his full-backs. I mean, they're all doing it now. Most of them are copying them. But didn't even he say it? He say it, Guardiola, that...

11:08You know, if you look at Arsenal, for example, we look at their back line, yeah, their full-backs will want to get forward, but ultimately you could argue, certainly Calafiore is a centre-back, but Timber and Calafiore, their first job and their first mindset is defending. Everything else is a bonus. after that. And I think that's the right mentality to have. Guardiola seems to have the opposite. Whereas he wants these attacking players and the full-back position, and it's leaving the rest of the other... It's leaving the other two centre-halves exposed. I mean, how can you be 5-1 up? I mean, you know, Fulham...

11:45You know, Fulham, to be fair, had only lost, I think, four goals. So the fact that City scored the amount they did is kudos to them. But you're 5-1 up, and then you're hanging on at the end of the game? What does that tell you?

12:56Craig Burley:We've let Augie and Stevie take a little break as we turn our attentions to La Liga and it was a big win for Real Madrid against our Athletic Club 3-0. They've come into this game not winning three at La Liga matches. One of their best performances though we've seen over recent months, Kylian Mbappe with an impressive brace. And it means that now Xavi Alonso's side are just one point of Barca at the top of the table. For more on this, let's welcome in, shall we, Sid Lowe and Luis Garcia. Luis, why don't Real Madrid play like this every time?

13:25Alejandro Moreno:Yeah, exactly. That's the question. I think they were very good today. I think they were they look solid. They look very compact in attack and in defense. I was surprised in the first 45 when there was a transition with Atletico de Bale by three seconds. Real Madrid was already setting up at the back with a low block and all and not giving much chances to Atletico. So I I think that overall, even though in the second half, Real Madrid didn't put much of an effort because I think the game was already done with the two goals from the first 45. It was a very, very good performance. And yes, they have chance also to rotate, to give some rest, some important players.

14:05Alejandro Moreno:Celta Ibico is next on Sunday. And then the big game against Manchester City. So a very good game. And yes, we hope to see more often these kind of performances because they got the talent. but today I think they also brought that energy and determination that Real Madrid needs to have if they want to win trophy this season. Do you think Zed's cold? Zed looks cold. Looks like he wants to be anywhere else, which is a shame.

14:30Craig Burley:I was interested in what Louis said. I don't think Zed was listening. I thought that was a start. I was absolutely listening.

14:37Alejandro Moreno:And I think it's worth picking up on your question, Dan, and picking up on it from a literal point of view. You said, why don't Real Madrid play like this all the time? Now, play like this, I think you can read two ways. One is the level of the performance, how good it is. The other is the type of performance, the way they are actually playing. And I think part of the answer is that this isn't the way Xabi Alonso had planned to play. And yet what we've seen today, I think, is the product of a manager speaking to his players, realising that they're maybe, how do I put this, kind of not entirely committed to his approach.

15:09And so you go for a formation in which you've got the two guys up front, Vinicius and Mbappé, and you go long to them. And you go long and you go athletic

15:17Alejandro Moreno:and you allow them to play the way that they want to play. Yeah, but one thing is that you want to play with two up front, three at the back, four in the middle. You can put any shape. And I think Xavi is changing the whole season. It's about the commitment the players today. I think it was totally different. The energy from Elche, Girona, Rayo Baicano, you didn't see it in the first 45 and a little bit in the second one. It's about the desire from the first minute, go for it. Pressing high, putting energy, recovering. The first ball from Militao, he wants to just smash the player, not even bother about the ball.

15:56Alejandro Moreno:They wanted to show that they were here just to win the game, and so they did. Does this say more about Real Madrid, though, or more about Athletic Club? Because that was a really disappointing effort from the home side, was it not?

16:10Craig Burley:I think it says something about both of them. And it definitely says something about Athletic Club, and we've seen it all season. And we were saying earlier, there are a team that create a decent amount of chances.

16:19Alejandro Moreno:They're a team that's fairly aggressive, but they're not as aggressive. They're not as intense as they were last year, and they just haven't been scoring goals. And there were a couple of moments today where they did get chances, and you just wonder, would the game have been different if they'd been able to take those two in the first half? One of them, of course, Courtois, makes an absolutely amazing save. But I do think that this is a reflection of how Athletic have been, and this is a team that are a Champions League team this year, but they knew that their squad was short and they knew that playing in the Champions League and domestically They weren't going to finish in a Champions League position this year right now It looks like they struggle to finish in the top seven or eight Yeah, it's gonna be tough to get in near Europe They are I think 11 points from Champions League, but the more biggest concern I think and I saw it a couple times Yes Robin manager of the club just my rubbing his face and looking at because of course was cool to add, did a couple of fantastic saves, and the game could have changed a little bit.

17:14Alejandro Moreno:For 15, 20 minutes, we saw a very good Atletic club recovering and making Real Madrid make mistakes in that last third. But in the end, you could see that he's missing a player who can capitalize those chances. I think the Gourmet Theta is a very good player, did an option. But in the end, you need players to finish those chances, and Atletic club, we could have been here for another two hours, and they wouldn't score a goal.

17:38Craig Burley:Kylian Mbappe the star of the show once again Luis how much is this about Xavi Alonso's tactics working for the Frenchman or how much is this about Mbappe fully settling down now as the best Real Madrid player?

17:52Alejandro Moreno:Yeah I don't think that Xavi is telling listen move here move there because he just play whatever he feels more comfortable whatever he finds there the gap the space and I was surprised a couple of times because he was so free no no more by any of the athletic group and you could see from the first 10 minutes that they were going to look for him and Vinicius on long boats and he got it a couple of times after that it's all about his talent he was fantastic that third goal field flow the speed the skills arriving to the into the box and When he's there, he's got that. Right now, his confidence is 120%.

18:34Alejandro Moreno:And it doesn't matter if he's going to fail or don't hit the ball well. In the end, the ball is going to be in the back of the net. But you want to have, when you're in this, can he form? And his numbers were good last year in the end, but his performances were not as good as they are now. His numbers and his performance is top drawer at the moment. But when you're playing like that, you want something tangible at the end of it, don't you? As a team, it's not just about an individual. as a team, you want success. You know, Ronaldo's had it there. You know, Benzema, all these Modric and Kroos. There was La Liga titles.

19:06There was Champions Leagues. There was all this success to go with performance. And at the moment, the big question is, is his performance alone going to be enough to get them that success, to win the La Liga title, to really compete in the Champions League? Because that was better tonight. But what we've seen over the last couple of months isn't going to be good enough to win the Champions League. It might be good enough to win La Liga, it might. And the question is, going forward, are we going to see more of this from Real Madrid, this kind of performance and continuation of Kylian Mbappe's form, and that's going to bring the team success at the end of the year, or is it just going to be another great season for him and Real Madrid have fallen flat?

19:46I think that is one of the big questions that is still out there.

21:22Craig Burley:More drop points for Liverpool this time at Anfield against Sunderland where they could only manage a 1-1 draw. Steve Nichol. Well, that was a struggle. It was a struggle for us. It was a struggle watching it as well. Well, there was a man watching. We were in a room and there was a man who was basically talking to himself and shouting. I mean, I reckon that was up there with the amount he shouted about Liverpool, There's so many things that are just either going wrong, not working out, bad decision making. What's your top three? Top three? Oh my goodness. Can I give a suggestion? Van Dijk. Van Dijk?

22:05Do you know, I've actually not criticised Van Dijk that much this season, to be honest with you. But tonight, there is absolutely no question he has to bear a whole lot of responsibility. not just for the goal but for the way Talk us through the goal what did he do wrong? Well what he did wrong was he He gave the ball away from start He gave the ball away he tries to play McAllister who isn't reading the pass OK so what do you do when you make a mistake try and make up for it and by making up for it he could have stepped out and closed the ball because he had Kerkhez who'd already come in beside him so he didn't have to back off but he did and then when he sees Talib going to strike the ball Again, he doesn't step forward.

22:49He just turns sideways. I mean, what happened to make yourself beg, you know, try and get in front of the ball? He just, he got absolutely everything wrong. And then what we saw at the end, again, in my opinion, is down to your captain. If you want to go forward, that's fine, and you want to try and win the game. But the first thing you've got to do is make sure that things at the back are sorted before you do it. And he just sauntered up the, just went straight up. Didn't even look. So, you know, your captain's there for a reason. He's there to organise. He's there to show the example, set the example.

23:23And he absolutely didn't do that tonight. I think it tells you West Ham were just... And the West Ham win was just West Ham. It was not Liverpool being great. And I think Stevie said that at the weekend. It was hard to judge because West Ham are very poor. He does everything wrong. Pass, doesn't close it down and turns his back like a coward. I'm fed up. I'm fed up he's sitting here. and it's Mo Salah who's not played well. Florian Vert, oh, he can't find his feet. Alexander, he's not. Ekechiki, oh, the midfield, the dynamics change. He's the barometer of what's wrong this year. He's supposed to be the leader.

23:57Both, you know, by what he does on the field and how he manipulates the back line and talks to people. All he's done all season is throw Kirkes under the bus, who didn't play, throws his arms up in the air. He's making as many mistakes as any other player. They're not always as high profile as Kanati or anybody else who've all made mistakes. But Van Dijk, every game you could watch him and go, what's he doing? Why is he doing that? Why is he doing that? And you've got the PSV game, the hand. Oh, I was pushed. You weren't pushed. It's just absolutely crazy. And he seems to be getting relatively, coming out of it relatively unscathed.

24:36And it's everybody else's fault. but for me at the back he has been as bad as anybody else and I think that goal and the way that he refused to close it down and the fact that he turned these back is the epitome of his performances this season I think what it is with Van Dijk I think he realises that he's not as mobile as he was he can't turn like he used to be able to I think centre forwards and forwards are now attacking Van Dijk no they can get some joy there I think he knows he's got his shortcomings and he's expecting everybody else to protect him to kind of alleviate those shortcomings And when they don't, or when there's mistakes made, he's blaming them first and foremost for kind of exposing him rather than exposing the team.

25:13And it's kind of creating that uncertainty all through the team. And like you say, you know, he's the leader, he's the focal point, and he's not, he's nowhere near what he was. But I think also they're not working hard enough as a team. You know, you've got Alexander Isak up front or, you know, Salah when he plays. The work they had last year with people like Nunes and Luis Diaz, it's not there anymore. So that when the forwards aren't working as hard as the rest of the team, then the defence and the midfield get exposed. and it's all kind of coming together and then you've got your full-backs that are all over the place, as you say.

25:39So everything is kind of combining to be a mess. Nobody's frightened to go to Anfield at the moment, are they? Nobody. No. We saw that at the start of the game. Yeah. You know, we were talking about what is West Ham? Well, the way the game started told you that they weren't convinced what they did against West Ham was because Sunderland started better than Liverpool. And quite frankly, at half-time, you couldn't have told which team was the defending champions and which team had just been promoted, you couldn't.

26:07Craig Burley:You also couldn't tell if Alexander Azak was on the pitch. And we spoke about maybe even strikers needing confidence. He got that goal against West Ham. We thought, well, maybe this is it. This is the kickstart that he needed. Yeah, I think I'm still... I don't think there's any doubt. Anybody who watches Azak right now is disappointed in the way he's performing. But again, you know, your centre forward relies on others more than anybody else. And he's getting absolutely nothing. I mean, I don't remember one chance that Liverpool had in this game, or the last three, four, five games, where you're saying they should have scored.

26:49Everything's the header from McAllister. Or Iketiki with a half a chance that he balloons wide. So from that point of view, I do still feel a little bit for both vets. and Isak. I think the majority of the blame lies elsewhere. But at the end of the day, I can't argue with what he said, he was absolutely invisible. I actually forgot he was playing at one stage in the second half. Salah came on in the second half, of course.

27:14Craig Burley:Big talk about his future. What did you make of him? He tried. That's all right. I mean, nothing came off for him. He never passed anybody when he tried to. he had a couple of crosses that never quite reached where they were supposed to he had a couple of shots that were blocked that weren't really on but you know you can't question his commitment when he came on but we expect more than that from Salah We talked about City doing some business in January what are Liverpool going to do? We obviously heard of Gaye I know it sounds ridiculous considering what they spent in the summer but they've got a headroom as well they can do business because they brought in about£250 million in the summer so they've actually got money to spend.

27:58They like Semenya as well. Again, they've brought a lot of forwards in so I'm not quite sure why they want Semenya but I think Mark Gray is going to be difficult because first of all, he knows when the season finishes he can take his pick of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal wherever he wants to go. So why would he kind of give up that free agent status to go to Liverpool in a real mess? I mean, I don't know. I mean, if you've got Liverpool now, you're playing with Van Dijk or Canate, you're kind of jeopardising your own form, aren't you? If you stay at Palace, you know you're going to go to the World Cup with England, but I wouldn't really like Chelsea.

28:30If you get through to January, well, once January comes, what's the point of Mark Gay not just waiting that three or four months? The one club I think he might go to is Chelsea because Chelsea need a centre-half. They could do the deal. It's a big club in the Champions League. It's London. It's someone that he's familiar with. And Palace would obviously take the money, but I think that is a decent bet for someone like Gray. But I think Liverpool is... I wouldn't go near it right now because of the uncertainty of the defence. every position in that back four and the goalkeeper is a problem right now.

28:59So if you're a centre-half going in there, it would be a risk. You can't say, well, let's drop Kanati because he's been struggling. We'll get Martin Gay and everyone's fine. Because Van Dijk, we've been over the goals with Van Dijk. Why would you not go to Liverpool?

29:10Craig Burley:Because they're an absolute mess at the moment. OK. Better options elsewhere.

29:19Really? Yeah. Don't move on wrong by any of you. So you'd rather go to Chelsea than Liverpool. I mean, there's no question right now, Liverpool are in a bit of a mess. But are you telling me that, oh, well, it's never going to get any better? I'll wait till the summer when you got, you would have the opportunity to buy Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool again, Man City are interested. Yeah, I think that's a better option. But then the fact that, if somebody was to offer 50 million for game, Liverpool and Chelsea, right, and Crystal Palace decided they were going to do it, I mean there's uncertainty over the manager apparently so if you were Gehi why can't I go now would you take Chelsea over Liverpool no I wouldn't I'd go to Liverpool but I'd also be worried

30:03Craig Burley:why would you go to Liverpool ahead of Chelsea although they've struggled this season they are technically they should be a much better team Chelsea are world champions how's that liver I'm quite surprised you're so dismissive of Chelsea because if you were going to go in January, Chelsea have got more chances It's not dismissive I'm putting this down as a blip for Liverpool Chelsea have yet to convince anybody Club World Cup, UEFA conference, nobody cares because as Augie said, he was playing the second team for the most part I don't quite understand how you say it's just a blip if you've got Van Dijk getting older.

30:47Craig Burley:You've been very critical of him. So, I was going to leave. Would he have gone to Chelsea instead of Liverpool? If he had a choice. It's a completely different conversation now. No, it's not. Because of four months? Yes, because of four months and the way in which the team... One of the things that would worry me about Liverpool if I was going in there at the moment would be the manager. Who will be the manager? Exactly. If I'm signing for somebody and he doesn't turn that around... It's not going to be you. It's not like you're going in and going, Dan Thomas is going to get a Liverpool job. I'm not going there.

31:16It's going to be somebody of repute. Really? Yes.

31:20Craig Burley:And bigger and bigger. And you're Dan. But aren't you all about... Who's more likely to win the Champions League this year? It's Chelsea over Liverpool. Surely if you're a player, you're looking at short-term goals? Why would you look at Chelsea? You're not looking at short-term goals. You're looking at your career and you're thinking, OK, Liverpool just won the Premier League. not long ago won the Champions League they've just spent they've just bought Isak they've just bought Verts, they've spent all that money they've still got more money to spend I mean, really? You're going to take Chelsea over Liverpool?

31:57Chelsea won the Champions League since Liverpool and they were World Club champions Don't, don't, Ogy, not with your facts If I was going in a free transfer and had all those other clubs that Ogy mentioned who were suitors, I'm not going to any of them I'm not going to Liverpool or Chelsea I'm going to Bayern Munich I'm going to Barcelona I'm going to Real whoever it is if those clubs were really in the hunt for him as a free transfer that's where I'm going and it's a free transfer element as well isn't it because that is a huge thing for a footballer even though they earn multi-millions the fact you can go as a free transfer you get the signing on fee there's no fee involved that is a big deal especially if you've got such an array of clubs that want you

32:35Craig Burley:meanwhile today Aston Villa are an incredible run of form and that will continue in a seven goal thriller against Aston against Brighton, they'd have to come from behind to get the three points because it'd be Brighton who would open the scoring early here. Keeper. I couldn't even see the keeper. Where was he? He was the one missing the punch. We can blame Emi Martinez for getting injured in the warm-up. Twenty minutes later and it's an own goal here, which makes it two. Mo Torres. He's unlucky. Yeah. There's nothing he can do about it. He didn't need nothing about it. Ten minutes later though, Oli Watkins in the starting eleven and in the goals.

33:20He needed that big time.

33:24Craig Burley:Then a long ball over the top. Would find Watkins to make it 2-2. Scary, isn't it? You can't buy a goal to save your life. You get two. Just like that. I mean, it's a great finish. got three defenders chasing them down into the second half Villa this time with a curling corner and Onana makes it 3-2

33:48Craig Burley:yeah back post it's above his markers Marlon's been a good form of laid for Villa in this good run that they've had he'd be there just to knock it home a stramash as we call it ball bouncing around all over the shop. It looks like a shin to win as well. Van Heek will then get a consolation here. But it'd be Aston Villa who win by four goals to three. They've won eight of their last nine Premier League matches very much in the ascendancy at the moment for Unai Emery's side. Is that a little beef between the managers there? Oh, I didn't see it. Yeah, the handshake. It seems to me a lot of managers have...

34:26Trust you to notice. A fine eye for these things, Daniel. It seems to me though, the way you and I, Emery, was talking to him, quite a few managers have a beef with the Brighton manager. I don't know if he rubs people up the wrong way. Because he's young.

34:38Craig Burley:Maybe they just don't like his youth. What's changed at Villa? How have they put this together? It's a good question because they just seem to hit a run, don't they? The stats seem really slowly, but it just seems to have clicked, despite the fact that Ollie Watkins isn't scoring goals. So Emery gets them well organised, but he's a bit of a mystery to be honest because Villa lost Rashford in the summer, they didn't sign Asensio. So you're thinking, well, the people they brought in, Jadon Sancho, hardly played. Harvey Elliott's not kicked the ball. Victor Lindelof. So they're not exactly deep to squad up, but they've had a fantastic season so far.

35:08And again, like I said, if they beat Arsenal at the weekend, they are in the title race. They had a slow start to the season. They just don't panic. They don't panic because they know they have a top-class manager who will run things around. The players believe in it. He makes good decisions. He doesn't get everything right. But I think he's proven before he was even at Aston Villa, how good a manager he is. And I think we've seen it since day once he's been in there. The fact that third in the league now after the start they had. Kudos to him. He's done an amazing job. I mean, if they were to finish in the top four, that would be a great season for them.

35:45I don't think they'll get in a title race because I don't think they're consistent enough. Ironically, they were one of the teams that lost at Liverpool recently when Liverpool were struggling. So that's not exactly a feather in their cap. But apart from that, they have been brilliant this last couple of months.

37:16Craig Burley:Right. Thanks. Goodness. That's right, Stevie. Right. Don outdid himself. Union Berlin in action against Bayern Munich in the Polka. Of course, this is a draw in the league. Twelve minutes in, it's an own goal that we'd see Bayern go 1-0 up. Yeah, you've got to expect it. He thinks the keeper's going to get it and he shuts down instead of expecting the goal that he missed it. And it hits his thigh and goes in. There you go. You've got to expect it. Twelve minutes later, Harry Kane. Good old Harry keeping his form up so as England can win the World Cup.

37:56Craig Burley:Great error though, isn't it? So Bayern look like they're in complete control, however, with ten minutes to go in the first half, handball here from Tar, penalty. Now nothing was initially given.

38:09Just a little spin on the ball, a little nick to the wicketkeeper.

38:17Craig Burley:So, Kerfield steps up, converts the pen. He's a big lad, isn't he? And an injury time in the first half, though. It's another open goal. Oh, no!

38:31He pulls!

38:36Just as he's heading that, you know he's thinking, let's go or not. And then here, Harry Kane throwing an elbow in the box, surely not from the England captain. The penalty's given. He's actually put that up to defend himself, he's not actually thrown that I don't believe. And Kerfield scores.

38:59Craig Burley:And the big lad scores another. To make it 3-2, doesn't matter though, Bayern would hold on for a 3-2 victory. Let's get some reaction now as Anasara Langs interviewed Harry Kane after the game.

39:37with both decisions going against us. But we found a way to battle, and that's what the Cup's about. You have to get through to the next round, no matter how you do it, and we can enjoy this tonight.

39:47Alejandro Moreno:Only PSG had more shots against you than Union tonight. How much were you playing with fire there? Yeah, but also we had a lot of chances as well that we could have scored. Kieper made some good saves for them. We had a couple just offside, so we knew this was the game. They put a lot of balls into the box, a lot of set plays, a lot of long throws. You have to defend it well. So there's going to be, of course, times where Manu has to make a save or we have to block. And I thought we'd done that really well. You know, we only conceded two, both from penalties, but from open play, we were strong and done it well.

40:17Alejandro Moreno:And I think the most important is you pass through to the quarterfinal. We talked in the previous round about that the hunger and the will is quite strong. So how would you describe the importance of that? Yeah, really important. Just for the momentum of the season as well. You know, in recent years, we know we haven't done well enough in this competition. So we set out from the start to go all the way and it's nice like tonight that you have to find it deep within You know, you have to look across to your teammates and know they're willing to go to battle for you And that's exactly what we've done.

40:44So we've we've won enough games playing the perfect football and creating loads of chances Today was more about the fight and we can be proud of that

40:52Craig Burley:Bayern Munich then back to league action on Saturday away against Stuttgart coverage of that game starts at 9 a.m. Eastern on ESPN Plus Meanwhile some big names will be at the World Cup draw Tom Brady, Shaquille O 'Neal, Wayne Gretzky and of course Mark Ogden will be there, what a treat for us all Mark, absolutely can't wait What will you be doing there? 41:32Craig Burley:The drab show will be at the end. That's the one you're on, isn't it? Oh, yeah. Good. Oh, no. That is it. That brings us to the end of today's show. Extra Time is next. A lot of questions, a lot of criticism. What did you say there? That was criticism. That was better than saying to him.

41:52Craig Burley:Welcome in to the latest edition of Extra Time. Mark Ogden is with us here in the studio. He's come here via... Oh, no. On the way to. way to uh dc of course you're heading down there for the world cup draw what's going to happen well there's going to be a draw there's going to be a draw and i think we're waiting to see who you know who the path to the final is you can always map it out from here you know they're going to drag this draw out of course they will and i'm going to get really mad i don't upset the guys but we know that scotland are going to get a team like i know you know what i do with these draws though i don't say who we get i'm not i'm not saying don't watch the shows no i think i think i'm not suggesting don't watch the shows watch the shows they'll be very entertaining personally myself, I just wait to the end of these draws to see who plays who.

42:31You can watch our show. Are you working on the early shows? No, I'm off that day.

42:38Craig Burley:Does Maresca think he's Pep? Why does he rotate his line-up so much? Would they be contenders if he didn't rotate? Did he not see what Leeds did to City? We discussed this quite a bit on the show, didn't we? What's up with him? Like I said, he's got a lot of players and he has to give them games. And he just picked the wrong game at the wrong time to change the squad. he made too many changes and he brought in players that hadn't played enough. I think that's all it is. He probably misjudged Leeds a little bit. Yeah. You know, Leeds are struggling but they are very good at all and wrong. Yeah, that's the thing.

43:06Do you think he took Leeds for granted, slightly? I think when you do make some changes, you're looking at teams who you perceive to be weaker. But stealing Mark Ogden's stat on Leeds, which I forgot. One home loss in 18 months? Something like that, yeah. Something like that. All right, all right. Last season, the championship. That's a no. I find that hard to believe. Tottenham. Tottenham beat in the season.

43:34Craig Burley:That was it. They've got a really good track of it. Chelsea got outplayed, Stevie, and outworked in every facet of the game today. As a coach, what's the message to your team after a match like that?

43:46Well, it depends if you perceive it to be their fault or your fault. If he's sitting thinking, I picked the wrong team, I made the wrong changes, then you spin it in a way that you're not pointing the finger at the players. Without letting them off. But you spin it in a way that you're kind of taking the blame, not them. Right. I'm just saying if we've got anything that he said after the game. Did you ever pick the wrong team? I only had 11 to pick from, to be fair. I didn't have a squad.

44:16Craig Burley:I had no choice. Mark, does Manchester United really have an interest in Pulisic? And is it mutual from Pulisic's camp? They had an interest around three years ago when he was on the way to Chelsea. He looked at it, didn't pursue it. What United need right now, what they're saying, they want our two midfielders and some wing backs. And I don't think he fits any of those kind of criteria. He's 27, so the age profile is probably beyond United. And also he's got 18 months in his contract at Milan, so it sounds like a bit of a ploy by somebody close to Pulisic to get him in your contract to say that, watch out Milan, Manchester United want your player.

44:49So I'd be very surprised if he ends up at all traffic. Are you banned from United at the moment?

44:53Craig Burley:What's your relationship like with United at the moment? It's fine at the moment, yeah. I'm not banned. But listen, there's no point in going to United these days because they're not playing for the titles and the trophies. So it's kind of hard to get a game that matters then. Wow. I'm being told that Leeds have lost twice in the last two months. Really? At home. Who's the second time, sir? Aston Villa and Tottenham. Oh, God. I said something like that. What's the point? And he went on your coattails as well. We said it on the show. Oggy, it feels like a serious question now. Will United finish above Liverpool in the table?

45:24Well, if they beat West Ham on Thursday, they go... Tomorrow, yeah. Is it three points, two points? No, no. Liverpool have got much more firepower, much more proven players. And United, as you saw against Everton last week, they are quite flaky. They've got a lot of big players leaving for the African Nations next, not later this month. So I think United will finish top six, seven, but Liverpool will finish top four. Why are people obsessed about finishing above Liverpool?

45:47Craig Burley:Well, because it's got a big rivalry, isn't it? If Liverpool finish eighth, seventh or eighth, and you finish one above them... Well, it cushions the blow, isn't it? Not really. How can it cushion the blow when you've been so bad for so long... I think if you could try to grasp it for any sort of optimism, then you would hang it on that. No! The big sign of progress in Man Utd, if they're going to measure themselves by the clubs who've finished above Man City... They haven't, and that seems to focus on that. OK. So that's the measuring stick, not Liverpool. What were you giggling at? Oh, it's his fans.

46:21Who was saying earlier on when we were in the room about Rangers and Celtic? The fans just beat Rangers. Celtic fans just beat Rangers. Almost like it doesn't really matter about anything else. Okay. That's kind of the person who's asking the question is clearly a Man United fan and just wants to beat Liverpool. Okay. Wants to be above them. All right. That's what I'm laughing at. Do you think Liverpool will finish above Manchester United? I absolutely don't know right now, to be honest. Wow. They should, because their potential is way bigger than Man United. But Man United are picking up points.

46:55And Liverpool are struggling to pick up points.

46:58Craig Burley:Dan, which one of the boys are you more... Oh, cranky. Long day. One of those big words again. Dan, which one of the boys are you more deliberately annoying to? I don't think I'm annoying to. I think I'm the same to everybody. Correct. It's just some people get a little bit more wound up about it. Exactly. For Craig, have you ever had an embarrassing mistake like the New York Giants kicker did on Sunday by completely missing the ball? Yes. Here we are, FA Cup semi-final. I didn't miss the ball. No, but you passed it to David Beckham and he scored. Yeah, but it was a very good pass. I may have been going in the wrong direction.

47:31What instant were you thinking of? Oh, I had a missed kick at Celtic once. Did you? I overlapped one of the lads and I told it with my left foot as I was about to whip it in. Brilliant. and I completely missed it. And as I was running back, the whole bench was just killing themselves laughing. I had one of your plays. Oh, yeah. Old Trafford. I'm going to take a quick corner. Kick the corner flag instead of the ball. Yes. You know, the funny thing is, at the time, you think nobody maybe noticed that. You're right. Yeah. You're right. Dennis Wise did that at Hillsborough, Sheffield Wednesday. Right.

48:05And then he tried... He kicked the corner flag and the ball just moved and then he tried to shield it. A bit more coming over. It was easy.

48:13Craig Burley:Oggy, what's the most embarrassing thing you think you've seen over the years? Oh dear me. Well you watch a lot of Man United so I suppose that's pretty much it. Yeah, exactly. I've seen some pretty bad ones, yeah. Penalty shoots, I think United lost a penalty shoot against Sunderland in the Carabao Cup about 10-12 years ago. That was the worst penalty shoot I've ever seen. I think maybe one penalty was... What was in Grimby? Well actually no. That was too recent for me to remember that. Yes. Any more defeats for Leeds? No, that's it. Just the two in four games. You know when you ask the producer to give you some really important information and we're live?

48:45I was hoping, yeah. You know, when some big moment comes along and you're looking for a bit of help. Yes.

48:48Craig Burley:He's sat there. I know. I don't know what he's doing. I'm still waiting for Mureska's post-match comments, which is just a complete... I mean, you want all that important stuff. He's nowhere to be seen. They haven't come through. Of course they come through. Game finished an hour ago. Anyway, that's it. That brings us to the end of today's show. Manchester United in action against West Ham tomorrow. And then Friday, of course, our World Cup special, Mark Ogden, live in D.C. for us to break down exactly who will be playing who in the States next summer. Oh, can't wait.
