In short
This episode of ESPN FC focuses mainly on the La Liga Madrid derby, where Atletico Madrid beat Real Madrid 2-1 at the Metropolitano. The key turning points were a Dean Howson foul on Giuliano Simeone in the box that led to a red card, followed by Grimaldo scoring the penalty. Atletico then doubled their lead through Jonathan David, and Rüdiger pulled one back for Real Madrid late, but it was too late.
Guests and backgrounds
Alexis Nunes, Stevie Nichol, and Casey Keller are the studio panel. Luis (post-game reaction) and Jan O’Black (Atleti side) discuss the match. “Macca” provides the Real Madrid perspective. The episode also includes Frank Leboeuf, plus additional segments with Casey Keller again.
Key claims
Atletico controlled the second half after the red card; Real Madrid were disjointed and lacked energy, with Vinicius limited to 22 touches. Mourinho’s post-match view criticized referee decisions and emphasized “winning” over entertainment.
Notable examples
Oblak’s late save from Jan Diamandi; Real’s late pressure after scoring; the “wait and counter” game plan debate.

0:35Hello there, everyone, and welcome into the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Alexis Nunes, alongside Stevie Nichol and Casey Keller. We're going to kick things off in La Liga because today at the Metropolitano, it was El Gran Derby Atletico Madrid getting a 2-1 win over Real Madrid. It was quite the feisty derby as expected. The turning points of the game came when Dean Howson pulled down Giuliano Simeone inside the box. He was eventually sent off. Grimaldo stepped up and netted the penalty. Jonathan David managed to score a goal as well to double Atleti's lead. Tony Rudiger pulled one back for Real Madrid, but it was a little too late for Los Blancos as they lose this one.
1:15Well, we're starting in Spain and we're staying in Spain. For more on this game, here's some post-game reaction from our crew out in Madrid. It was quite a story we saw unfold in front of our eyes. It really was enjoyable, I've got to say, sitting on the sidelines. It really was one of those games that you just save it every minute, wondered what was going to happen next. How did you see it, Luis? Actually, I knew it a lot more in the second half. I think it was fantastic. Very intense. I think the both teams tried. Unfortunately for Real Madrid, that penalty, that send-off, it was a big problem and they couldn't cope with what Atletico Madrid was to offer right after.
1:51I think the first goal of Atletico Madrid after that penalty gave them the confidence to keep on having the possession, dominating the game, and then the second one arrived. And it was Real Madrid trying to grab something really difficult, but in set pieces you know that everything balanced a little bit and get even. But today, Atletico Madrid deserve it from the very beginning. Yeah, I'd go with what Luis said about the nature of the way that the game changed early in the second half, because to be honest, I thought the first half was really quite poor. There were confrontations, there were moments when it looked like it might spark into life, but it really didn't happen.
2:22it took a penalty and a red card maybe for Atletico to fully take control but I think we all thought that at half time they'd had more of the ball, they'd proposed a little bit more they'd been a little bit more front footed and in the second half they really dominated Real Madrid I thought Real Madrid had at no point any hope of getting back into the game until they scored and then we had this incredible tension of the last 7 or 8 minutes where of course no one knows better than Atletico Madrid fans how dangerous Real Madrid are in those positions but they held on OK, we've got Jan O 'Black joining us now to talk more about today's game.
2:53It's going to come to stand between Luis and myself. Jan, come on over here. Great to have you. Nice to meet you. Thanks for joining us on ESPN. First of all, give us your thoughts on that win today for Atleti. Important win, important three points. That's it. I think we played pretty good. In the end, we suffered. I wish we could do it better, but the last few minutes was a little bit difficult because we concede the goal from the header. But anyway, I think good games from ourselves and important three points. Jan, thank you so much for joining us and congratulations on the win today. Thank you.
3:33We'll grab that off you. Thank you so much. Thanks, Jan. Thank you very much. Okay, what stood out from what he had to say? He made one really, really important save as well because we saw how much tension there was and the nerves that Atletico Madrid had in the final seconds after Madrid had scored very late on. Imagine if they'd scored with 15 minutes to go, the save that he makes from Jan Diamandi. Now, for what it's worth, I think Diamandi strikes it really poorly. I think he should score, but Oblak makes a great save. And what he didn't admit there, we were behind his goal, when the full-time whistle went, he didn't celebrate, did he, Kate?
4:10He had the look of a man that thought, we should not have been in this position. We should not have had those final tense minutes because we were so much in control. Macca just chilling out. Come on over. Taking it easy. Taking it really a little hand in the pocket, strolling along. Wait till you see him just dawdling on in here. He's not happy. He is. Macca is not happy. All right. Give us the Real Madrid side of things. Macca, what happened today? Where did it all go wrong? Stop standing on me wires. I know there's too many wires there. How are we? Oh good, Macca. How are you? How was it? It wasn't a very good game, was it i mean atletico time but it was they won the game quite comfortably isn't it weird how games go the two nil up tell us tell us tell us a little bit from your perspective what did you see how did you see real madrid i just thought they were really disappointing don't you didn't you think and you know when they get the goal from rudiger they suddenly jump into life but it's just too little too late and i thought they were really i thought they were very disappointing throughout the game.
5:10No real energy, no real class, no real quality. They just played like individuals. And then suddenly, you know, at 2-0 down, they're just still walking around the pitch. And then they get the goal and then they start to try. But I thought it was a very strange performance, very disjointed. We were talking yesterday about the introduction or Alda Guller into the field or Jandio Mandé. My perspective, when you come here to the Metropolitano, again, this atmosphere, in the moment that you try to hold the ball you try this eats you you know that the pressure is there Arda Gulli is a player who can have the ball who can find the positions but here Atletico Madrid put you under pressure Guillaume Mande is a player who tries yeah he's gonna yeah make you feel a threat you know and that's what I feel that today Real Madrid was missing Vinicius you know on the left side wasn't if he didn't appear at all.
6:0422 touches, by the way, of Vinny in the entire game. He had what, shall he? 22 touches only in the entire game. Yeah, I mean, but to be honest, that could have happened to anybody. You could have brought Killian off once the red cards went on. You know, anybody could have come off. It just so happened that it was Vinny Jr. today. But you go back to last year's game. Ardegula didn't do very much here, did he, this time last year. He got bullied out of the game. And today, but as I said, today none of them did really well. I thought Bernardo did well when he came on. But it was easy to come on, run around and look as if you were doing something.
6:34Yandy and Mandy, come on, look to threat, as you rightly said. But apart from that, it was all just a little bit too little, too late. They dawdled out at half-time and started the second half, like half asleep, and then suddenly the house and mistake, it was like literally game over. Talk to us about that, Maka. How did you see that moment? Well, I changed the whole game. You know, I said, I think at half-time or just before half-time, you know, the heat of the game, you'd expect people to tire, yeah, mental fatigue comes into the game, and this is it. And he does neither anything. You know, he's not getting there.
7:08He doesn't make an attempt. He pulls him down. You know, you might as well let him control the ball and then leave it to Courtois. But in effect, he does nothing, gets caught. And then it's a red card, rightly so, and it's a penalty. So it's a double whammy. So I don't understand it at all. So you'd have to ask Dean Howson what was going through his mind. Yes, he gets caught from the long ball, whether he's still in the dressing room at half-time. I have no idea but then let you know once you're being caught let Simeone chest it and then hope your goalkeeper who's a wonderful goalkeeper does the rest but in effect he just makes it easy for everybody the awareness when you are in that position you know that any touch it will go you to Simeone yeah exactly he's going to go so you need to be aware of that we have no problem about that it was just his decision making house and yet again he's being caught out hasn't he so what's he got to fix during this international break he hasn't got the players with him to be able to do it what's he going to be thinking about Well, that's the first part of the answer to your question, is what's he got to fix during the international break?
8:03There's not very much he can fix because he hasn't got the players. There isn't really any work that he can do with them. Obviously, he can think, he can analyse, he can try and work out where players fit. I think the key to, maybe not the key to it all, that's probably only overplaying it, but there needs to be a sense of what are you trying to do when you have the ball. Not necessarily who is going to do it, but what are you trying to do? And from there, which players help you do that and which structure helps you? What identity have Real Madrid trying to achieve at the moment? You know, he's come out saying, you know, it's winning rather than entertainment.
8:35Well, it's not. It's entertainment. I'm winning. It's both when you play for Real Madrid. That's important. And when you've got your nearest rivals, no disrespect to Atleti, when you've got Barcelona scoring five every game and looking as if they can score ten every game, then you've got a massive problem. I think that because Barcelona is having that momentum, to that idea, philosophy, like 100 % in the last two years. And right now, yes, crushing every single team kind of make the difference even bigger because the last couple of years, Real Madrid is always there, is always trying, good and bad, but they were challenging for.
9:10But right now, the difference is huge. It's so big that when you have a look, you say, oh, there is something very bad that Real Madrid does. You know what Barcelona are going to do, through good or bad. You know what they're going to do. They're going to play, they want to play through the pitch all the time. I don't know at the moment with Real Madrid. They've lost Kroos, they've lost Modric, so they've lost that control in the middle of the park. So it's as if they're just waiting for moments all the time. Let's hope Bellingham does something amazing. Let's hope Killian does something amazing.
9:38And if they don't, if they have off days, then the team are just... I think that waiting thing is part of today. Today, the plan, it seemed to me, was we wait. Let them come and we counter-attack. And Atletico was so clear that we cannot let them counter because that's what they do well. The problem with trying to play on the counter-attack is if the other team doesn't let you counter, if the other team never gives you the ball to run with, where do you go? And, you know, talking about that idea you were talking about that Mourinho says it's about winning, not about entertaining or not about playing.
10:07But in order to win with any consistency, you have to have a sense of what path it is you're taking towards that victory. And at the moment, I don't think that's clear yet. Maka, thank you so much for being with us. It's great to have you on with us. Isn't it nice to be here? It is lovely. Okay, you know we've been talking about Melo Mourinho so far this season. I'm not too sure if that is the case in today's press conference. I'm told it's a little old school, Mourinho, so let's hear from him.
10:37We were able to save the press conference because the story of the match is here.
10:48There are two clear red cards. The difficulties we had afterwards, 11 against 10, 50 minutes, 11 against 9.
11:03And therefore I have to limit myself to embracing my players who gave their all and put in a performance of great sacrifice in the first half.
11:16We could easily have won the second half.
11:22Ultimately, the Atlético de Madrid fans are the ones who should be happy, as they are taking home the points.
11:31They have every reason to be delighted. As for the referee appointment committee, the whole situation was very strange. It's all very strange.
12:08There are two actions that they could one of them they went to the VAR and we decided to send the yellow card and But in that one that we saw from That is something at least we it should have gone to the VAR in check because or someone have told told him listen This is high. This aggressive is very late because yeah, it's no intention the ball But the boys far away it goes in touch with the starts kind of the curve of the players so we could agree like this and if a player of the league sent off of course it's a totally different game. Yeah exactly I think the analysis of it is that is that you can see a justification in that argument the analysis of it in the way that Mourinho delivered it is a bit old school in terms of having the piece of paper remember that time when he came out with a list of I think it was 13 mistakes from a referee and said I've got them all here I mean some of them were quite minor but these are two big ones I quite like the idea of him getting a member of staff to run around the Metropolitano and say, has anyone got a printer?
13:04I think that was a bit cooler as well. But I think the argument is a reasonable one. I do think that, as Maka was saying earlier, you still have some of those questions about how they play and what they had done in the first half and what they were trying to do, because it felt a little bit, didn't it, like we're going to wait and we'll get that counter. And when we get that counter, we'll win 1-0. And then, of course, there is always that doubt. Is that enough? For how long? How many games does that see you through? In Mourinho's defence, Madrid have scored quite a lot of goals this season, apart from away at Betis where they were beaten, and here where they've only scored once and they were beaten.
13:39But it's not surprising, to be honest, that he goes down that route in the press conference. I personally don't like it, even if I can understand his argument. I'm personally not convinced that a manager should be going that route, but we know that Mourinho does it. It's part of the package. I just want to say, we do have a Colcineiro here, a former Colcineiro in our presence. However, he was very professional during the game. I was sat next to him. The same could not be said for our Deportes team, where Mario Suarez was celebrating and caught on camera for the world to see. I mean, it's muted, but it's definitely a bit of a celebration.
14:12To be fair to Mario, he is only clapping. I mean, we could see Mario jumping. There we go. That is great footage, because I'll be honest with you, if this was my team that had scored that goal, Mario is standing there clapping. Imagine this had happened with a certain team from the north of Spain. I would have been jumping over the advertising boards. I would have been in his arms. So Mario actually was quite... Is this the point where I have to say, but they have to actually be in the league for that to happen? Shush, K. Shush, we would need to be in the first division for that to be the case, yes.
14:38Let's focus on Atletico Madrid. Yeah, let's focus. Let's go back to Atletico Madrid. A big win for Atleti today in El Derby, once again here in this fixture for another season. And we will have more La Liga coming your way. We do have an international break ahead, though, and it's a lengthy international break, too. But here's how things will be looking when it does return to action on October 9th. Atleti will be away to Alaves. Barcelona at home against Etape. And Real Madrid back at the Bernabeu against Villarreal on October 10th. All of these games, as always, available on the ESPN in English and in Spanish.

Manchester City took on Sunderland in the Premier League, and who would have thought that we were treated to probably one of the best games of the season so far.
17:07An eight-goal thriller, unless, of course, you like defensive performances, because we saw plenty of goals. Erling Haaland managed to get on the score sheet. Antoine Semenu backed a brace as Manchester City came out. Big winners in this one, 5-3. Let's bring in somebody else that can have a say at that. Our Frank Labov, who was watching this one. Frank, entertaining game, eight goals. I was saying maybe it could be the game of the season so far in the Premier League. What did you think of it? Well, if you're a defender, you don't celebrate too much. Guys, we love goals. You want to see eight goals.
17:43Yes. No, I'm with you, Alexi. It was a real, yeah, it was a real entertaining game. But I thought about Broby, going back to his house, talking to his wife who didn't watch the game, saying, oh, I scored a hat-trick. Oh, well done, so you win. No, we lost. That's really crazy. That's absolutely crazy. But when you concede three, where you do three big mistakes at the back for Sunderland, even if you, I think, play better than Manchester City, you pay the price. I mean, they are so talented at front, and I'm talking about the citizens, that you cannot afford to make too many mistakes. But overall, yeah, I enjoy it, especially the first half.
18:25I really enjoy the game. And the last thing I want to say, it's been a second time in one week that we stopped Alan enjoying scoring a goal. So let's say it's a goal and then you say it's an offside or not because he has to wait for VAR to appreciate what he does. But overall, I enjoyed the game. Of course, too many mistakes from goalkeepers, and Casey can witness that. But overall, yeah, you have to encourage teams to go forward and try to entertain people. And really, we've been entertained. Well, don't worry. I'm going to know my audience, so let's talk about the issues defensively. Because if you look at the stats, too, Sunderland, I believe, had about 4.2 expected goals.
19:09That's actually the most by any visiting side on record at the Etihad in the Premier League. So that's something that Enzo Mareska would not be happy with or have to think about during the break, right? Well, you have to be able to fix that. I mean, yes, you can outscore your opponent, and Manchester City proved that today. But if you want to be there at the end of the season, we know that Liverpool last season, for example, Stevie, What did they concede? Something like 53 goals. Like something that you can't contend if you concede too many goals. You can outscore your opponents on the day. You can have fun.
19:45As a neutral, you're like, what a great match. But that's something that Manchester City has to get right if they want to truly be at the top of the table at the end of the season. I mean, you look at Barcelona. They let in a goal here and there. But they make it entertaining by outscoring their opponents. But Enzo Marewska did end up saying he would rather win 1-0 than 5-3, Stevie. Well, yeah. Listen, we know what City are going forward. But just to really jump on what Casey's saying, you can't contend for the big prizes if you're losing goals. And with all due respect to Sunderland, they're not the finesse side of the Premier League.
20:25And I guess they learned a lesson as well. You know, Sunderland last season did what they did because they kept it tight and they didn't give much away. And so when you try and open up and play, you sometimes get a lesson. And Manchester City gave them a lesson today. And what happens if you open up and go away from what you do best? So Sunderland learned a lesson today and Mareska learned a lesson that he has to do something with that defence. And you go against a team that you know if you do open up, they will punish you. You know, it's one thing if you're going against a team that's kind of in your area mid-table and you're trying to stay in that upper mid-table and not sneak into the relegation fight.
21:09And you say, hey, we're at home. We're going to open up a little bit here. And it works. But when you go on the road against a team that is going to punish you if you make simple mistakes, you got punished. They did get punished. And Frank, would you say this is probably then a bit of a wake-up call, an early wake-up call for Manchester City and Enzo Maresca, at least defensively? Well, he has to. As the guy said, you need to take that as a lesson. And it's great. I mean, we are being critical towards City. We won five games in five, well, five times in five games. So we have to be optimistic for City.
21:52We didn't expect them to win five games, you know, in a row at the beginning of the season. So they have to appreciate that. And they are ready to respond against a team Sunderland who opened up was very good for me offensively. So, yeah, I'm pretty sure as an Italian background, you know, you need to learn your lesson and you don't want that to happen again. He would have to talk to Donnarumma. He would have to talk to his defense, maybe to Henderson as well, to make sure that everybody at the back makes the good job because he cannot be like that in order to win a title. Arsenal has made a mistake for the weekend.
22:30It won't happen again. So if you want to compete with them and be as strong as the Gunners, you have to be tighter at the back to be more tuned in. Otherwise, you've got to be punished. Yeah, well, Frank said the big thing, because I know we have two defenders and a goalkeeper. So, of course, we're nitpicking at the non-defensive display that we saw today. But the truth is, Manchester City came out on top. They got the win. They got the three points in a weekend where Arsenal dropped points. So, Stevie, this has opened a door for City, albeit a small one early on in the season. I think that's a bit of a stretch, Alexis, to be honest.

23:06Three points! Listen, if there was four games to go in the season, I would be talking about doors being open. OK, well, is it open? A window? A crack in the window? No, no. Right now, for everybody, still, it's about figuring out the best 11 and the best way of play. Yeah. And then you kick on and then you take that through the guts of the season and then you come to the end. So right now, we're talking about Sunderland and City getting a lesson. Arsenal got a lesson yesterday that when you're the champions and you come into town, it's different. Regardless of, you know, when the Liverpools and the so-called big teams go to Sunderland or Hull or anywhere or Brighton, the big boys are in town.
23:57The circus is in town. But when you're the champions, it's ramped up another. And so the lesson for Arsenal is that they have to make sure that the very first thing they have to do is win the battle. Regardless of where they play, whether it's Anfield or whether it's Brighton, you have to win the battle to start and then you go from there. So right now, teams are just getting a lesson. And City are lucky that they learned a lesson, but they still got the three points. Whereas Arsenal, they learned a lesson, but they got nothing. Yeah, Steve makes a good point. Sometimes it's really easier for the constructive criticism when you've won.
24:33Everybody's already down, maybe a little defensive if you have a bad loss. So when you win, it's kind of easier to put your arm around somebody like, you know, Frank mentioned it, like a Donna Roma and say, hey, we know what you're capable of doing. You know what you're capable of. This isn't you chasing balls out here, doing this kind of stuff. We don't need that. And like I said, when you did, when you have made the mistakes, you weren't punished. You were able to come away with the three points. It's a good time to sit down and kind of get everybody refocused. So Frank, this means nothing for you in terms of the title race?
25:11Well, it's getting interesting. You know, everybody agreed at the beginning of the season. It's been proven that Arsenal are the favorites. And after two or three days, we say, oh, whoa, whoa. It's confirmed. You know, they're going to win and easily win. Well, now it's another talk. Yeah, as Stevie says, it's a big stretch. But you know what? I want to see, I don't know. I want to see Brighton surprising everybody. I don't remember with the beats in the League Cup last week. I don't remember. But it's always interesting to see surprises. And as Sutherland surprised everybody and some others, Brighton, they have everything.
25:48I don't know. They have no depth. And maybe I'm not sure. I don't know the team that good. But it's interesting to see how they're capable of surprising everybody, how good they are, how disciplined they are. And that's what you need. And if they don't have unfortunate injuries or any other things, they can surprise. And if the Gunners and Citizens are not serious enough, let's see what's going to happen. Remember Leicester. Yes, indeed. Right. Well, we know that one side of Manchester is happy today. But what about the red side of Manchester? Fulham took on Manchester United at Craven Cottage and it ended in a 1-1 draw, but still had some eventful goals indeed.
26:28Indeed, it all started off with a bizarre Alessandro Martinez own goal that looked to seal the deal for Fulham. But in the 89th minute, Mateus Cunha had a deflected strike that was able to rescue a point from Michael Carrick. Frank, both Fulham and Manchester United needing something this week. Who would be the happier side?
26:51I would say none of them. I mean, we saw great first half, especially 25 shots on goals, a very offensive one. It should have been like maybe 3-3. But Fulham cannot be happy because they thought they got something and they could have gotten the three points. And of course, Manchester United, when you play against the last of the table, United cannot be happy to only score at the 89th. On the goal they conceded, I don't know, in French TV they say Martinez is responsible because he's trying to give the ball back to Lamens, which I doubt about that. He's a left-footed. He tries to just touch the ball.
27:28I don't know why Lamens, maybe Casey can say it. Why he doesn't take it with his hands? No clue, Frank. No clue. Yeah, that's what I thought. And I sent a text to a former Leeds Everton player, Olivier Dacour, who played with me with the national team. And he works for the team. I said, what are your commentators saying? You know, Lammens is responsible. And I don't know why he tries to tackle the ball. Martinez just tried to touch the ball, but that's whatever. But Martinez had a great shot. I think at the beginning of the game, I really thought Manchester United will kill the game very early.
28:06Fulham were really there. But after 20, 25 minutes, something turned. And then Fulham became very competitive. And then it becomes a very tight game, very entertaining as well, but interesting. and overall the draw is quite normal, but it doesn't please anybody, I think. Casey? Especially on that Lissandra Martinez zone goal. Well, I mean, Fulham have had a difficult start to the season. I'm probably thinking that you're that close to picking up three points in a match that you didn't particularly expect to pick up three points in. I think if you had asked him probably before the game, they would have been like, oh, yeah, we'll take a draw against Manchester United at home.
28:49Manchester United, I think in the same frame that Frankie's talking about, is that they need something to kick on their season as well. And to lose at Fulham would have been a huge embarrassment. To scrape a point gives you a little bit, but in the end, they would have expected to come down to London and go away with three points. Steve, if you're Michael Carrick, what did you make of Manchester United's, I suppose, energy levels? because Mateos Cunha after the game says he felt like they woke up after going a goal down, which was well into the game by then. And we keep talking about why we're not getting the same reaction out of the players from Michael Carrick that we saw last season.
29:30You know, I can't imagine for one second that Michael Carrick is not winding them up before the game. Yeah. I can't imagine. But they still look pedestrian. But then that comes down to the players themselves. You know, we've been talking all season so far that we don't think this Man United team is good enough to compete at the top. And it's not just about talent when you're competing at the top. It's about the desire and preparing and being ready when the first whistle goes that you are involved in the game and you are closing people down and doing all the dirty things and winning all the battles.
30:07That's why the best teams can do everything. And so I just find it a little difficult to put the blame on Carrick because the players step on the field and they have to prove what they're worth. And this Man United team don't. And Man United should be glad Everpoint because they could have been two or three down at halftime. There's no question. Yes, United had some chances, but the best chances were for Fulham. And so, yeah, Michael Carrick, I'm pretty sure was winding them up. But now he has to sit them down and look them straight in the face and say, You need to look in the mirror. Every single one of you need to look in the mirror because when you go on that field, I can't be chasing after you and winding you up.
30:47You have to be able to do that yourself. So I'm going to take a little away from Carrick and put this on the players. And again, Bruno Fernandes, he's the captain. He's the one when he sees that any player isn't focused properly, doesn't have that intensity or that desire properly. That's his job as a captain, to make sure that they have that. So, yeah, I'm putting this one on the players. Frank, do you two more on the players now than on Michael Carrick? Yes, of course. Where I disagree with you when you call them pedestrians or when Stevie said that they are more, Fulham had more chances, I think the first 20 minutes, again, Manchester United were spot on.
31:29They were working. And the problem is they have, I think they have, as Brighton, the most shot on target of the Premier League. but they have to work on the finishing. And when you have Mbomo, Cunha, Fernandes, comparing to any Brighton player, you cannot afford to waste those chances. So they have to be better on the finishing. But again, as they would have been more clinical, as Manchester City has been, and I know you won't like the comparison. I'll take that comparison at this point. But it's what it is. When you're a top club, you have to finish better and they would have done that they would have the game would have been over after 20 minutes for sure so um Carrick can be responsible for something but today no the players are responsible for the result and uh he would have the right to be very upset after the after the game Casey yeah I mean you're talking about a little bit of a gulf in quality And when you look at the stats from the Sunderland-Manchester City game, City had less shots, less shots on target than Sunderland, but scored two more goals because there's a little bit different gulf of quality of the players in the final third.
32:52Matches are won in two positions. The defensive third and the final third. And what Sunderland did in the defensive third and what they were unable to do in the attacking third, the difference was the gulf in quality for Manchester City. So when you look at Manchester United and the chances they created in this match, they needed that little extra bit of quality that I'm sure the Manchester United fans have been used to seeing over the years. maybe it's not quite there. So then you can't afford to not match the energy or surpass the energy of your opponent because you don't have that quality that's going to bail you out in the final third that Manchester City had today.
33:40All right. Well, big point on the road then for Michael Carrick before the international break. Imagine if it fails when you call it a big point. The mighty Fulham, the mighty Craven Cottage, the fortress that it is in West London. Whether you meal prep or meal panic, Instacart's new shopping assistant, Clementine, is here to help. Brought to you by Argenics. Anthony Iraola returned to the Vitality Stadium as Bournemouth hosted Liverpool, and it was Liverpool that walked away with all three points.
35:04Alexander Isak scoring the winner in what was a tough watch overall, but in the end, a solid performance from Liverpool defensively and plenty to be proud of for Iraola. Bournemouth proper team Stevie so how satisfied are you with this win something tells me not very much I'm absolutely delighted oh okay with the way they played they come away with three points I'm absolutely delighted yeah listen I said I said a couple of weeks ago if I could get Liverpool to just keep clean sheets then if you do that because they have got talented players you've always got a chance yeah of getting a goal get a point, get three, whatever it is.
35:47You've always got a chance of getting something if you keep a clean sheet. And that's exactly what happened in this game. Liverpool, these teams could have swapped strips and you wouldn't have known who was there. That's how, by average, Liverpool were today. But they got a win. And so now, when you get three points, you can build from it. Everybody has a different... There's a different atmosphere around the place when you get a win, particularly away from home. So, yeah, the performance was rotten. In terms of going forward, it was desperate. As I said, it took us 57 minutes to show the goal.
36:24And even after that, there wasn't another chance. So, yeah, I'm delighted. Three points away at Bournemouth, not playing well, but it's a clean sheet. And that's how you start. That's how you get things going. Frank, you agree that's how Liverpool should take this one? Despite Stevie saying they were a bad average? Take the three. No, yeah, there were more than that, you know. That was boring. I was being kind. From both sides, you know. Oh, my God. But, yeah, get the three points, go back home, and be happy, you know. It's a wonderful Sunday. But, yeah, I'm worried about Bournemouth. If they keep on playing that way, I think they are in danger.
37:05But Liverpool didn't show anything. They had one shot from Bacola in the first half. That's it. otherwise that was very average uh good the clean sheet it's very important we were talking before about entertaining games entertaining games sorry before where uh you had so many goals so let's say that defensively Liverpool did the job and got the three points so everybody has to be happy on the on that Merseyside area but otherwise yeah go back home get the three points think about working out, working very carefully for the three weeks if you have some players for that because they're mostly internationals.
37:42But otherwise, you know, nothing much to remember about that game because that wasn't entertaining at all. Yeah, but Liverpool with now three consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League for the first time since 2024. Casey, is that what we should be focusing on now instead of some of the other concerns? Well, I think it was last season's major concern. and I think I understood that that had to be fixed before they kind of got into a more expansive attack. And to Stevie's point, when you're working on things, when you're trying to figure stuff out, when you're trying to figure out who you're going to be, how you're going to play, what's your way going forward, if you can be confident that you can keep it at zero, you have a chance of getting results.
38:35If you're always worried we're going to concede two and three, it makes it way more difficult. So if they can get consolidated defensively, then figure out – you look at that team sheet. They're going to be more dangerous going forward in the future, but not if they're trying to come back from being 2-0 down after 20 minutes. So I think they're getting it right. Now it's then how do they be, you know, better in the attack. But you've got to start with defense. And the two things that have made a difference, number one, is a Rojo going to right back. You know, instead of having a Fring Pong or a Trent Alexander type, you know, all this trying to attack and go forward.
39:17Someone who actually defends. Somebody who actually understands. You mean a defender being a defender? What? Not in the modern era. We can't have that. Spooky things. And also, Jackie. I mean, Frank will know him better than we do, but Jacque, now that he's 100%, because he wasn't 100 % at the start of the season, he has made a huge difference as well. If they can figure out how to sort out the left-back position, then you are looking at a solid base, 100%, that you can build on and are building on as we speak. Frank, what do you make of the two players? I know you touched on Jacque the other day, but also the introduction of Ronald Araujo.
39:53Yeah, that's very interesting. I mean, Jacquet is going to get full confidence going with the national team, with Zinedine Zidane, and meet some huge players. And it's a dream come true for him. And I don't really know the other one. But I think it's very good also for Van Dijk to have somebody that he can rely on. And Jacquet seems to be that guy who is ready to learn a lot quickly and being effective. So it's a very good point for Liverpool. I didn't expect that guy to be as ready as it is right now. And I agree with Stevie. The guy wasn't ready at first, but after five games, no problem. Conate can go to Real Madrid.
40:35We have Jaquie now. Everything's perfect. Look at that. We had a 5-3 result and we had a tough 1-0 result. And that's the one that we're talking the most about because, again, two defenders and a goalkeeper. All right, well, let's have a look at some of the other results from around the Premier League. Frank, cover your ears because remember Friday, Chelsea went down 3-0 to Brentford. The issues continue with Spurs as they went down to Aston Villa. And then, of course, all of the games that we saw here today. We'll make sure to tune in to ESPN FC tomorrow as well. We will be back looking back at all of the weekend's actions and maybe looking ahead to the international break now that it will be getting underway.
41:16From the English Premier League to Germany to Spain to four World Cups, Keller became one of the most dominant keepers in the game. The way he played was unreal. You just saw this aura of confidence. What a save by Casey Keller. It was impossible to ever stop fighting. But you can get beat down enough where you finally quit. The one piece that I kind of left out. I was actually fighting for my life. None of the coaches knew. None of my teammates knew. And I didn't know how much longer I could go. You don't want that to be the end. This isn't just your career ending. This is potentially your life ending.
42:15The Greatest Save, they're featuring the one and only Casey Keller. streaming live now on the ESPN app. Casey, just want to see if we can get into your brain as well about what this documentary is about. Because as you said, it is the greatest save and it dives a lot deeper into your battles on, but maybe off the pitch. Yeah, I mean, so it's a short documentary, a little over a half an hour, and it kind of starts with growing up a farm in Washington and being one of the first players to be able to, truly establish themselves in England with Millwall and kind of being able to do that at an interesting place like Millwall.
42:57And if you saw any footage from the Millwall West Ham Derby yesterday, you understand that it's a place. A couple lighters, coins, anything else. And then kind of going from my long career, going back home And kind of having this this kind of like this perfect scenario where I spend 17 years in Europe. I go back home. The sounders are blowing up and there's this, you know, this this this huge buzz around that. And then when I went home, I signed a two year contract in my late 30s, early 40s. And we kind of wanted to see where I was before I extended. And as I was extending or in the process of extending for a one year contract, I was having a little problem at the end of the season with my hip.
43:49And what I didn't want to do is play my 20th season as a pro and spend that whole time on the treatment table. So I said to the club, I said, look, before I sign the contract, I just want to make sure that there's nothing serious with my hip. So I go in, I get the MRI about two hours later. I get a phone call from the team doc and he's like, Hey, Casey, look, just wanted to let you know. Your hip looks like a 41 year old guy who's played 700 matches. It's fine. But he says, I have a question for you. I said, OK. He said, you had lunch yet. I said, Doc, I've had a lot of MRIs. Nobody's ever asked me if I've had lunch yet afterwards.
44:34He said, well, we saw something else on the MRI. And if you hadn't had lunch yet, we wanted to go back to the hospital and get a biopsy. Since you've had lunch yet, you're scheduled for 6 a.m. tomorrow morning. You know, but you don't know. Yeah. You know when they're that serious about that. So then it was a case of, you know, the wonderful four or five days waiting for pathology to come back. Pathology comes back, confirms that I have non-Hodgkin's. lymphoma and then it's the question marks then it's meeting with the oncologist the oncologist said look you know we we see no reason for you let's let's just monitor this and see what happens so then so then you know I spend the I play that whole last season not knowing if I could start the season finish the season I had a couple tests throughout the year went into the broadcast broadcast career after I retired.
45:38And it was really eight years before I started treatment and then fully expecting, you know, treatment to be the doc to come back and, hey, this is the most success we've ever seen. And instead it was a series of setback after setback. Yeah. Yeah. Well, we are so happy that you were able to make that great save indeed. And Casey is chronicling it in that one. The greatest save, it is available now on the ESPN app. Please definitely watch it.

47:41All right, well, that's going to do it for this edition of Anerly Said Football, America's ESPN. But don't go anywhere because we've got some questions to answer over on Extra Time next.
47:59All right, welcome into Extra Time, everyone. Alexis Newn is here alongside Stevie Nichol and Casey Keller, plus our super, super Frankie Leboeuf. Let's get into the first question, shall we? And it's for Stevie. Stevie, Liverpool has had three clean sheets in a row since Irrayola started playing Virgil van Dijk, Jacquet and Araujo together. Do you think they will be a solid top three team if they sort out the left fullback as well? It's almost as if he was watching you on the show. Well, I'd have to see, yes. Top three? team steady well that's what he's asking well there's there's three parts to that question okay so the first part would be a yes right the last part i'll skip the middle the last part is a stretch right now okay because going forward liverpool are not creating much there's a guy called gagpo who could have been playing for man city today um fortunately he didn't go because right now he's the only person from an attacking point of view maybe he could throw Sobizlae in there yeah it's only really Gakpo who's producing anything because right now Florian Verts ain't doing it Isak yes he got a goal but he did nothing else in the game and hasn't hasn't really done that much in terms of off the ball so going forward to be a top three sides you're going to have to start scoring goals and Liverpool right now don't look as though they've got any sort of connection between the front players including Bacala to create and score lots of goals.
49:40So yeah keep coming clean sheets then you can you can nick 1-0 wins like you did today but you're not going to be in the top three if you're nicking 1-0 wins throughout the season. So if Liverpool don't get their act together going forward they won't be in the top three. Well, from one defender to another. Frank, what do you think? If they sort out that full-back position, the left side, will they be a top-three team? Could they? They could. They could be, which is incredible, because we've said a lot of time that Liverpool was the most entertaining team like three years ago in the Premier League.
50:15And now they could be the most boring team in the Premier League, but keeping cliche and winning games. and because when you compare with Arsenal even Arsenal this season being very offensive of first Manchester City but we saw Brighton we even see Manchester United shooting a lot of time no scoring but right now they might come and Chelsea as well and and then we see a Liverpool team where you see nothing where you can enjoy but as you say three clean sheets in a row one nil win away from home so that could be the new Liverpool let's see I don't know if they can last it will need to be more effective at front but so far so good yes yeah I mean the great teams have balance they're they're good defensively but they're also a threat in the attack and and right now they needed to figure out their defense and it looks like they're figuring that out but if they're going to be competitive in the Champions League spots next for next season they need to be more uh effective going forward and they have the players to do it there's no question they do and they just but it has to click Casey Ekiteke is also at some point coming back remember the effect that had Ekiteke last season before his injury so let's hope that he will score goal with him.
51:47Again, that's I hope everybody what Frank said is right, but I hope everybody's not thinking that Ike Tiki's just going to take a pair of boots on and be the same after being out for over a year. Sure. But yeah, in terms of the back three, yeah, but unfortunately the fourth pete is missing because Liverpool are struggling big time at left back. That is absolutely a weak link. Right, next question, which I don't think we have the right personnel for but we're going to see. What can Kylian Mbappé learn from Rafinha about the art of playing as a number nine? Frank, you want to start? Oh, my God. I'm not sure what to answer to that nasty question.
52:33There is a meaning behind that question. So I think Rafinha is simply exceptional right now. He's on fire. He plays from another planet right now. It's crazy effective. Every time he touches the ball, something happens. But you have to respect Mbappe and what he was able to do every time when he was playing for Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid for so many years, scoring so many goals. So I won't answer to that question, even if I agree that Rafinha Reina is the best striker in the world. Yeah, I would eliminate the number nine of that question. And I would say, what can Mbappe learn from Rafinha right now?
53:17And I would say leadership, kind of the way he's helping galvanize this young Barcelona team, the way there's an unselfishness. There's this idea of, I'm playing number nine, but if I need to go wide, I'll go wide. If I need to drop back and defend, I'll drop back and defend. And so, and the way he's kind of bringing his other teammates along. I mean, we saw a couple matches ago where, you know, he had a real stern word with Laminya Maul to say, hey, come on, hey, get, you know. And so I would say it's more the way that Barcelona needed a leader. They needed somebody in that position. When Hansi Flick asked him, it was Hansi Flick was quoted.
54:04Yeah, it was a 30-second conversation. Yeah, of course. Rafinha, sure. What's the team need? Of course, I'll do it. Done. And he's absolutely thrived from that. and his teammates are thriving with him. And I think for me, that would be what I would love to see Kylian Mbappe become at Real Madrid. There's absolutely nothing that Rafinha does that's about him. Yeah. Team player. Absolutely. There's nothing he does that makes you, or he portrays as, this is about me. Which, Frank knows Mbappe better than the rest of us, But looking from the outside, it looks as though a lot of things Mbappe does is about him.
54:47All right. We'll leave it at that. They're coming for Frank's boy. But next question. What do players who aren't on international duty do during the window? Or is it vacation period? I feel like... Like hydration drinks, right? Yes, yes. I feel like these three were always called into international windows. Come on, you guys are the crown de la clan. Most of the time. I used to pull out a lot. I used to have the old, oh, my groin. And you hobbled all the way to the pub. Well, what would happen is Dalglish would come up to me and say, look, do you really want to go? You know, particularly if it's a friendly.
55:31Yeah. Who really is friendly, right? And I'd be like, I'd be like, no. Are you fighting for something? Because I'll tell you what, he goes, hey, if we're cruising, I'll take you off in five minutes to go and give it the whole groin. Because back then, like today, you actually have to have all kinds of doctor's nose. I wonder why, because people were kind of changing the system a little bit. I wonder why now they actually have to look at stuff. We were two, three up on a Saturday at Anfield. Right, on you come and I'd be like. And then you see Steve Nicole out for this international break with groin injury.
56:07Treatment table. You know, Stevie, there can be 20 doctors. There are some injuries. They can't do anything and they can't know anything. Yeah, exactly. And the ankle as well. And there are some feelings that you cannot create. But you know what? It's crazy because at the beginning of my career, I wasn't playing for the national team. So I was working hard where everybody was on duty, international duties. But after that, it became like three days game, three days games for like seven, eight years of my career. And I remember one day, it's nothing to do with the international duties, but I remember one day getting a yellow card and it was my third one.
56:52And I knew that within 15 days I would be suspended. and I said to the ref, you know what? You gave me a weekend off. Thank you very much, my dear. And he was so upset with that, you know, because we cannot enjoy anything. So I had a drink, some drinks with a weekend off. That was great. We had a few times that worked out really well where they would start European Championship qualifying and we wouldn't be necessarily on the same schedule because we didn't have World Cup qualifying for two more years. and South America was like that. So I remember one time we had a weekend off and it was, we took the kids to Euro Disney and it was a who's who of South American footballers in Europe who didn't have an international break while the Europeans were in qualifying.
57:43It was tremendous. Love it, love it. All right, next question. Well, actually Casey's got something fun this international break. Some of us have to talk about the U.S. Men's National Team. Well, I assume I will be, too. I'm going to sneak off to my house in Idaho and get kind of that late, early fall. And, yeah, kind of have that late summer, early fall in Idaho mountains. Flannel pumpkin spice lattes. Oh, he loves the pumpkin spice. So do I. Next, what? You don't like pumpkin spice? Pumpkin spice latte. Pumpkin spice latte. You like haggis spice latte. Haggis spice. Oh, dear. That's way down my list.
58:20Stop it. Way down here. Pumpkin spice ale, maybe? They're pumpkin beer. That's got a better chance. Yeah, that's got a better chance. Stevie, do you think Arsenal lack the firepower up front akin to the likes of PSG, Bayern, and Barca to go all the way in a competition like the Champions League? Is that the one thing they're lacking? I don't think you can say that. Does firepower win the Champions League? I mean, or it can help. right but yeah, I got to the final last year and I got played for them it's called the one on the Champions League yeah, so it's not like they don't have players that have been there before Donna.
59:04It's it's it's a few. It's about getting a rate on the day if you get to the final. Yeah, oh, you get orders and look at yeah, I should get example. Yeah, there's nobody has got more or better fire power in the French national team. Sorry, Frank. You know what? The semi-final, it just went wrong. It wasn't their day. So, yeah. So you have to have the ball to be able to score in Spain. You didn't give them the ball. You have to have the players to win the Champions League. Yeah. Yeah, that would be the answer. Frank, what do you think? Well, and you need to, yeah, you need to have the mindset as well.
59:41When they play the final Champions League, they don't want to attack. They don't want to create anything. And it's why they may be lost. but I think they have all the tools, all the Arsenal to win something and they are ready. Havertz is on fire. If he keeps like that, he would be the right striker and already scored a Champions League goal with Chelsea when Chelsea won the Champions League. So it's not really an issue. They don't really need a striker. I really think that they are all everywhere capable in every position capable of winning the championship with a team like that. But as Stevie said, when you play a final, it's the day where you have to be ready.
1:00:27It's mentally, physically, and tactically. All right. Let's go to the final question now. And it was something we were talking about earlier, some scary scenes. But Andros Townsend, the former England international, thankfully avoided any serious injuries after being run over by a pitch roller during warm-ups before a Thai league match. Can you guys recall seeing any weird incidents or injuries during warm-ups before a match? Hopefully no pitch rollers. I saw, I didn't see it, thankfully. But a really horrible, horrible incident where, I think it was at Charlton. where the team bus backed in and caught a steward and pinned him against, and I think he lost his life.
1:01:21And so there's, yeah, there can be some tough things. I mean, was it Palermo, the Argentinian that was celebrating? I think it was Villarreal's old stadium, and he jumped up, and it broke, And the cement came off and broke his leg and knocked him out for the rest of the season. Oh, my God. Yeah, there can be some crazy stuff that kind of happens. This just took a dark turn. Well, you get run over by a steamroller on the pitch. That's kind of dark to start with. Unfortunately, you reminded me of another incident. We were playing at Barnsley in the League Cup. This is back in the 80s when, you know, certificates for...
1:02:09Certificate for safety. It was a little bit different. Give me the pen and I'll sign it. We played Barnsley and during the corner at that end, and of course everybody's pushing forward, and the wall collapsed. So then their players were running over, pulling bits of the wall up and pulling people out. They touched with, fortunately, as far as I know, nobody got injured. Yeah. Seriously, a couple of bruises and bumps and cuts and whatnot, but yeah, one of the walls collapsed. Frank, I'm almost afraid to ask. There's nothing fun. There's nothing fun going to happen. Boring life. About getting run over by starting the conversation, by getting run over by steamrollers.
1:02:55I think they were suggesting maybe any funny or weird incidents. A parachute is landing on somebody's head. Yeah, or... As long as the parachute opened. Oh, there you go. There you go. Yeah, it can only go wrong. Last question. Nothing much for me. I only saw somebody sleeping, a player sleeping after the game, you know, going to the shower and hit his head, you know, on the floor. And it was OK. The marble. The only thing that I saw, and it'll be crazy. Frank, the marble at Highbury at Arsenal. It was like a marble floor. You'd have your studs. I mean, like every match, it almost felt like someone was going to take a header.
1:03:36Right. Well, that's a very positive way to end this extra time. Lovely. Stay safe, everyone out there. Stay away from pitch rollers, from poorly inspectors. Marble, showers, pretty much everything. Wrap yourself in bubble tape and join us on ESPN FC again tomorrow.
