0:34Hello everyone and welcome to the latest edition of ESPN FC with myself Alexis Yunus alongside Shaka Hislop. We're going to kick things off in the Premier League because goals, goals, goals galore over in West London as Chelsea and Brighton played out quite a thriller. Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto and João Pedro put the Blues 3-0 up, but Brighton managed to reduce the deficit to a single goal. And that was also thanks to Joao Pedro's own goal before Cole Palmer, who came up Trump's and made it four for Chelsea. So they win this one 4-3 at Stamford Bridge. So let's welcome in one of our favorite former Chelsea men and World Cup winner in our Frankie Leboeuf and Gabriele Marcotti, who was actually at Stamford Bridge for this game.
1:19Gab, Chelsea looking good. They certainly did look good. And I think Chelsea fans are so frazzled that it was kind of remarkable because they race out to the 3-0 lead. They're absolutely dominant. And then fall asleep defensively and it's 3-1. And then the Joe Pedro own goal and it's 3-2. And then suddenly things got nervy. Insults are flying against certain players. Also because of some of the chances that were missed by Joe Pedro and by Palmer. and then Cole Palmer pops up and settles all the nerves. Ignore that goal at the end. I mean, total garbage time, completely irrelevant just before the final whistle and everybody feels good again.
2:04I think this is going to be the ride this season for Chelsea. The good news, as we said before, no European football, which means Xabi Alonso has a lot of time on the training pitch to go and fix what needs fixing. Frank, what do you think of your old side? Xabi Alonso seems to be working so magic And as Gab says, with no European football, it could be a great season for Chelsea. It could be. It could be. But I'm going to ruin a little bit the enthusiasm of everybody because I'm a perfectionist. And I saw so many things where, in fact, you know, yes, offensively, we have something to do. But defensively and be careful when I say defensively, I'm not meaning because of the defender.
2:46Everybody has to work better on the three goals. Neto on the first one on the on the counter-attack was supposedly trying to defend and did something stupid and Didn't get the ball then on the second goal that was Palmer We didn't follow the one who almost called the goal if it's because it's a Pedro on goal and the third one is Morgan Rogers not following as well is man So those people they have to understand when they work defensively. They have to work as defenders Otherwise, yeah, lots of chances. I love the verticality of the game. I love the fact that tactically, Xabi Alonso, a lot Brighton to play to open up.
3:26But they have to be careful. On top of it, Brighton didn't play with their best players at front. Therefore, they could have scored many goals. It's already lots of goals conceded. But so far, so good. We have to be happy. Again, it's because I'm a perfectionist that I warn everybody. Be careful. you have to be more consistent defensively altogether. Shekhar, you agree with Frank, especially considering Emi Martinez didn't quite get the clean sheet he probably would have been hoping for. No, well, first of all, surprised to see Emi Martinez in the squad having just joined, but Robert Sanchez not being on the bench maybe signals something to come in the next couple of days.
4:03I'll echo what Frank said. I think there's a lot here for Chelsea fans to be excited about. There's a lot, similarly, to be concerned about in two league games so far this season. Chelsea have now scored seven goals, but they've also conceded five. And that has to be a concern. I will say, though, while I say that, watching the game, it felt like Chelsea was certainly in more control than maybe the scoreline suggested and certainly more than the stats suggested. When you look at the full screen of the stats that we had up earlier, Brighton had 74 % possession. at Stamford Bridge. So while you celebrate the three points, you celebrate the four goals, it clearly highlights that there's still a lot of work for Chelsea and Xabi Alonso to do.
4:54Let's also say that Brighton have shown themselves to be a very good team. What we've seen over the last couple of seasons, you could just ask Villa from last week, Brighton are a hell of a footballing team. So you take the three points, But you have to recognize that defensively, as Frank pointed out, you have a lot of work to do if you are to live up to the expectation of the Chelsea squad. Gab? I agree with the boys' assessment. What I would say is the other big concern is in the middle of the park. Moises Caicedo, who I still maintain is Chelsea's best player, obviously he wasn't fully fit.
5:33He comes on and then had to come off again. and we're going to hopefully get more news in the next 24 to 48 hours. But that is a role where I think they're already undermanned. Romeo Lavia played very well in this game. However, we know his injury record. That was his first goal in four years, if you can believe that. Valentin Barco came off, who supposedly he can play central midfield, but very well at Strasbourg. But this is obviously a different level. Rhys James, we know his injury record. Malagusto had to start there. on this occasion. You wonder, and as it stands, I mean, we don't know if we're going to see Enzo again in a Chelsea shirt or not.
6:13I think that's all TBD with the transfer window closing in a few hours. So you put those things together, you wonder if maybe that is the position where they might be a little bit undermanned, if indeed, especially if it turns out that there's some things wrong with Caicedo. Potentially at centre forward as well. You know, Emmanuel Emega has come in. Is he capable of being the alternative to Joel Pedro? I don't know. These things obviously are mitigated by the no European football, but there is, as the boys were saying, there is a lot to work on. A lot to work on, indeed. But what about in what's left of the transfer window?
6:52Frank, what did you make of the fact that Xabi Alonso didn't have Enzo Fernandez or Robert Sanchez in the team today, in the squad? I'm not surprised. I mean, everybody made a statement about Roberto Sanchez and what happened last game that he played and the goal he conceded. And it was kind of an emergency, and it's been like that. And it's why Emiliano Martinez signed. And he signed this morning, I think, and played in the afternoon. So that's only fair. That's what it is. We play in a world of competition, and you have to accept that competition. And it's been a while since we warned everybody about Roberto Sanchez's consistency.
7:30and that's why they made that choice and very quickly. But Enzo Fernandes, I think he's gone. I mean, we have the case with Julien Navarez. A club can fight and try to keep a player, but if the player wants to go, he has to go because there is no way that he would be fully fit, fully fit also psychologically to give 100%. So I think nobody wants Enzo Fernandes to stay. it's time for him to go because he decided to go because he showed last season because of his comment that he wanted to leave so bye bye, good luck Gab, what are you hearing about Robert Sanchez and where he could possibly go is it the end for him now at Chelsea?
8:16I think it probably is I mean they like Mike Penders a lot they had Mike Penders on the bench and I think they see Penders as the backup but I also think it kind of suggests that maybe they're also, they know they have to go in a slightly different direction with Emi Martinez in terms of the build-up play and, you know, Emi's not quite as good on the ball as obviously Robert Sanchez is, although on recent performances people might debate that. But obviously Penders, given that he's about 20 feet tall, is also not going to be necessarily quite as comfortable on the ball. So it might also suggest that they're going to go in a slightly different direction in terms of build-up play and what they want for a goalkeeper, and that's fine.
8:58And as for Enzo Fernandez, I 100 % agree with Frank. He was booed when he came on Craven Cottage by both sets of fans, and the absolute biggest cheer was for Debo Martinez when his name was announced at Stanford Bridge today. So you can tell that the club have pretty much made up their mind I think you can find Robert Sanchez a home as a last-minute situation where he can compete for a spot. I don't think he's as terrible as some people make him out to be, but I think it's pretty obvious his future is not at Chelsea. All right. Well, lots of questions for these boys to answer, and guess where they'll be answering it?

10:54In La Liga Action, Real Madrid took on Malaga, and it was a big win for Los Blancos. They continue their perfect start to the season with three wins from three, Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe among the goal scorers as Jose Mourinho's men continue cruising. So we're also going to go live to the Santiago Bernabeu right now because that's where you will find our Alex Kirkland. who managed to take in this game. Alex, yet another good win for Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid. What's your biggest takeaways from this one? Yeah, their best win yet, I think. Alexis had the game wrapped up after half an hour.
11:29There was no doubt after that point what the result was going to be. Biggest takeaway is probably Jude Bellingham, who I think has been the outstanding player so far this season for Real Madrid. Lots of talk about him post-match. He spoke to Real Madrid TV, Bellingham. Quite interesting this, I think. Talked about how he's enjoying being a bit more free, playing with freedom, being able to get up and down the pitch. It's one of the big talking points last season, this time last season under Xabi Alonso. He wanted Bellingham to be a bit more maybe limited or focused in what he did to not be covering so much ground.
11:58It sounds like Bellingham's getting a lot more freedom under Jose Mourinho. He certainly thinks so, and he's happy, and he's contributing. It's two goals and two assists for Bellingham so far this season. Of course, scored the opening goal today and basically created the second goal as well. So for me, the big talking point, the big headline is that Bellingham is back to his best. Yeah, Shaka, do you agree that Jose Mourinho has given him that freedom and that's exactly what Bellingham needed? Yeah, absolutely. Listen, we all know how good Bellingham can be, particularly in that kind of 10th position.
12:26We saw that under Carlo Ancelotti in his first season. But somehow it just didn't click last season under Xavi Alonso. And I think that had a lot to do with Vinicius and Kylian Mbappe and what's Bellingham's role in kind of filling in around that tandem. Now, you look at the movement and the interactions between Vinicius Julien and Kylian Mbappe, it just feels a whole lot better. It feels a whole lot more natural now. And as a result, Bellingham just kind of slots in and is doing similarly. So I hold my hands up. When Jose Mourinho was signed as manager, I thought this was more to do with a discipline problem within that Real Madrid dressing room.
13:09But what we've seen so far, yes, it's Malaga, but the performance today, and in particular, that performance of that front three come front four, was Real Madrid as good as we've seen it since Kellen Mbappe arrived. And that uncertainty between him and Vinicius have kind of plagued Real Madrid since. Yeah, Alex, is that what all the talk is now, that the dressing room is back to being perfect, the perfect harmony once again?
13:38well it's very very early let's see how they get on you know away Betis later in the week let's see how they get on in the Madrid derby in a couple of weeks time there'll be much bigger test than a newly promoted side at home at the Bernabeu but there is a difference it does feel different look the team that started the game today the starting 11 there was only one new face in Cucurea the other 10 players were all here last season this could almost have been a Real Madrid side from last season but it looks different it feels different There's more structure. On Xhaka's point, they're not kind of getting in each other's way.
14:09Mbappe and Vini and Bellingham, they seem kind of clear about what each of their roles are and how it fits together. Yes, there'll be much bigger tests to come. And when they play against a really good side, let's see if they can keep this up. But I think the early signs, it's fair to say, are really good. Well, Real Madrid's title rivals in Barcelona, they're in action tomorrow. But Alex, it seems like they're closing in on a deal for Arsenal's Gabriel Jesus. What are you hearing about that one? Yeah, really interesting one. We know that Julian Alvarez has been Barcelona's number one target ascent for this summer.
14:42It's not happening. Atletico Madrid have said time and time again, it's not happening, absolutely. And so Barca have given up on that and they've looked for alternatives and they've found one in Gabriel Jesus, a player who's really struggled with injuries the last couple of seasons. That's really limited his impact. I think we shouldn't forget what a big impact he had when he joined Arsenal from City. Everyone talked there about how he'd sort of raised their ceiling and arrived with a winning mentality. He was a really positive character to have around the dressing room. But since then, injuries have really limited what he could do for Arsenal.
15:11I think as an option, as a fairly cost-efficient option for Barcelona, he's not going to start a lot of games properly. We've seen Rafinha so far this season being kind of a false nine for Barca. But as a backup, as an option off the bench, an experienced player, a player who will fit into the dressing room, I think it's not a bad option if, and it's a big if, he can stay fit. Julian Alvarez must be clawing his eyes out looking at that headline because as Alex said, he made it clear. He made it clear, though, that it was Barcelona he wants to go to. But Atleti said no. Alex Kirkland, thank you so much.
15:43We know it's been a long day for you. We're going to let you go and party hard into the Madrid night, possibly. Or maybe file and continue working, as you always do. Yeah, right. Don't try the backtrack now. That's the one. Bye. Madrid is a true city that never sleeps. All right. All right, well, Dan and the boys continue talking about Gabriel Jesus getting ready to join Barcelona over on our YouTube page. Make sure to check it out. 18:47All right. Well, let's get to it then. Shaka, because indeed, a big win for Manchester United, led by Captain Bruno Fernandes, who managed to get a hat-trick as they won 5-2 over Ipswich Town. This is Bruno's only second hat-trick in the Premier League and his first in five years. But the truth is, everyone is talking about the goal that eventually gave Manchester United the lead in the second half, where Harry Maguire was at the center of it all. A bit of controversy there. The boys over here, Gab, in the green room, Craig and Shaq and Dan, were having a big debate about it. What did you make of it?
19:26I'm okay. I'm okay with the fact that, you know, thank you. I thought you might be Alexis. Look, his arms are in front of his chest. It obviously hits his arms. If it hadn't been there, it would have hit his chest. He then, I think, takes two touches and then shoots on goal and it gets deflected by Greaves, that's not a punishable accidental handball. Or rather, it might have been, but on the field, it was ruled an accidental handball that was not punishable because it did not lead directly to the goal. And so, Villar lets it go. They say, we want light touch Villar. That's what, or at least that's what they told us that we're getting.
20:13I don't think he got any kind of advantage out of it because, like I said, his arms hadn't been there. It would have hit his chest. It would have still been there for him. And then there was still a lot to come before the goal. So for me, I'm okay with it. VAR was not going to step in. All right, well, before I let Frank in, because I know he's chuckling over there, I just want to say that the Premier League match centre said that the referee's call of the goal for Manchester United was checked and confirmed by VAR, with it deemed that Maguire was not the immediate goal scorer after an accidental handball.
20:42It's an own goal. And the accidental handball, Frank, is not punishable. So they recommended that the goal was awarded. Frank, the floor is yours. No, well, you know, saying that, you know, I can understand the explanation that gave Gabby about the fact that it's not punishable because the two hands or the two arms were close to Maguire's chest. I could understand that. But trying to give us an information that it wasn't even the guy who scored the goal, therefore, he doesn't make the end ball. That's BACS. I'm very sorry. Keep it simple. That's okay. For me, the thing I put myself in my warrior's feet, you know, when I said if I control the ball with my chest, will it be more difficult than if I do it with my arms or my forehead?
21:38Yes. it is more difficult. So you can control it. We can see the left forehand of Mike Guerrier going a little bit like that to push the ball. So yes, he's close to his chest. It's a tricky situation. And we can go either way. But for me, putting his hand or his arm, the forehand on the ball helps Mike Guerrier to direct the ball. It's where I would have said no goal. Chaka, you also had a problem with this reasoning, if you will. So let me just start by saying it was not a debate in the green room. Everybody was aghast. Except me. That call stood. Craig told you to come and speak for him today.
22:23And make sure to say as much. I thought it was just a god-awful decision. And while we could get into the explanation, the black and white of the law and the semantics around it, Maguire handles the ball. He has a direct, I do not think anybody will debate that he has a direct impact immediately from that on whether the goal is scored or not. So now saying, well, it was a known goal. If Maguire hits that shot and goes straight in, goes disallowed, I don't think anybody denies that. So now we're in a position where Maguire is being rewarded for being a poor footballer. Is that where we are right now?
23:10Is that the gray area? That is just absurd. As a footballer, listen, I am sure referees will say otherwise and point out a number of things. As a footballer, that makes no sense at all. If he puts a top corner with the outside of his right foot around three players, no goal. But if he shanks it 10 yards wide and it comes off the ankle of a defender, that's all right. How does that make sense? Gab? I mean, well, Krishaka, when you put it like that, I would tend to agree with you. But I do think, you know, the assumption was that Maguire's shot would have gone wide without the deflection. And so they're applying sort of this very narrow definition, right?
24:12When we all agree the handball was accidental and so therefore wouldn't have, when you take a step back and remember why this law exists, right? This law is so that if players score with an accidental handball, right, that's what it's for. And we've seen that they, when they kind of sort of reintroduced it, at first they were disallowing goals left and right, and then they decided to interpret it this way, that it's really only if it's kind of the last touch. And I think there were a bunch of touches between that and the shot, as well as a deflection. Without the deflection, the ball does not go in, right?
24:50We agree, and it's not a goal. And so therefore, they said, well, this is too far back. We're not going to rewind that back. I can see the logic in their decision. That's what I'm saying. All right, well, enough about this handball should have been or shouldn't have been. The point is Manchester United won, looking comfortably. Bruno Fernandes with a hat trick. Michael Carrick, Frank, said that United needed to bounce back in a big way after that opening loss to Hull City. Did we see it? We did see it in the second half. In the first half, I was very worried about the way that Man United were coping.
Read the full transcript
25:29But yes, in the second half, I found the Carrick team of the second part of the last season where they were in control, they were playing vertical, everybody was spot on. I really love the Tillmans-Mehino pair as well. I think they played very, very well. Everybody was at front spot on. I love what Rashford was producing. Of course, Fernandes had a hell of a game with three goals and an assist on top of it. And Bomo was struggling, but he scored a beautiful second goal, first goal of the season. So everything was positive at the end of the day. But don't forget what happened to you in the first half and what you weren't capable of doing.
26:16But otherwise, yeah, we see the strengths of Manchester United. We see what they are capable of doing, but they only played the two teams were just promoted. So let's see how it works. I think and I trust Karik that he can keep on doing that way and keep on winning. So I'm pretty confident that they launch today their season. Never a doubt really, Xhaka. Never really a doubt. But what stood out to you, especially who, apart from Bruno Fernandes and his hat-trick? Because I know you were applauding Marcus Rashford as well. Yeah, I thought Marcus Rashford coming back into Manchester United, everybody wanted to see how he'd fare, kind of given his season at Barcelona and given how, I'll be honest, decidedly poor he was before that.
26:59But I thought we saw the best of Marcus Rashford or coming back to the best of Marcus Rashford. I'll also double down with Frank said that Kobe Maynard, who's a player I like a lot and especially kind of given his exclusion and now coming back into the squad, looked very comfortable in possession. There were a couple of times where he chased players down and one possession and one of the big criticisms around Manu was his lack of pace and sometimes lack of mobility in that midfield. But that certainly was not on show today. Manchester United would deserve it, wouldn't it? There's no denying that.
27:38But you just start to get concerned when you see Hull take the lead. And then Nunez with the slip that allows Manchester United back in the game, great finish Bruno Fernandes. And then the second goal. And from there on in, this looked like the Manchester United that you would expect against a newly promoted team. You just wonder, though, given last week's results against Hull City, if they stayed behind for much longer against Ipswich, how maybe that would change things, change the atmosphere within Old Trafford. But all that being said, they got a little bit of luck, not once but twice. And once they did, they looked completely comfortable.
28:20Gav, do we take this win with a grain of salt considering it is a newly promoted side, or do you see what the boys are saying, that United are showing some positive signs? I mean, I think the positives are there. What would be a bit of a concern is that other than Rashford, the positives are the positives that we saw last season, right? It's not, well, look, Bruno Fernandes, three goals and a tremendous assist, probably the best thing he did on the pitch. That's not news, right? That's not forward progress. My concern kind of remains the same. I think this team's going to live or die this season by two things.
28:58One is whether they can continue to carry this 4-2-3-1 with the kind of midfielders that they have. Because Tielemans and Mainu may look fantastic at home against an Ipswich team that takes the lead. But if you're going to have the sort of front four that United have, and you've got those two guys, You're asking them to do an awful amount of work in the middle of the park. And against a better footballing side, away from home, against a team that keeps the ball, there's a serious risk that they're going to be, you know, run ragged all over the pitch. So that's why the arrival of Carlos Paleyba and what he can contribute is going to be critical.
29:35And I think the other big thing is how Carrick copes with midweek football. And I know I feel like I'm beating a dead horse here, but we just don't know. Because he's never had to do it before. He's integrating new players into his team. Players aren't used to it. And it does take a lot out of you. And United's squad, not the deepest squad. So all these things together, these are, for me, are the two really big question marks that Carrick's going to have to answer. The two big challenges, if you will, that we just don't know about yet. Right. Well, everyone's favorites to repeat as Premier League champions this season is Arsenal.
30:11They're in action against Aston Villa away from home. Now, let's have a look, though, at the predictions that our crew has said. Oh, everybody absolutely going with the Gunners in this one over Unai Emery's Aston Villa. Which is not good news. Which is not good news, Frank, at all. This means this is going to be an Aston Villa win. All right. Well, to see if everybody knows what they're talking about or not, make sure to join us over on ESPN FC tomorrow while they'll look back at that game over on the ESPN app. The world's biggest soccer tournament has arrived, and you can trade the entire tournament on Kalshi.

32:08Well, plenty more NWSL highlights and analysis coming your way on Tuesday in a new edition of Football W. Back to the late block, 8.30 p.m. over on Disney Plus and the ESPN app. All right, well, that's going to do it for this edition of ESPN FC. But don't you go anywhere because when we come back after this, it's going to be all about extra time where the boys will be answering your questions.
32:40Hello, everyone, and welcome into Extra Time on this fine Sunday. Alexis Yoon is here alongside Shaka Hissop. We also have Frank LaBeouf and Gab Marcotti. Guess who's the happiest person on ESPN FC today? I don't have the questions yet. Yeah, well. I don't have the questions yet. In the meantime, I've got a question. Guess who's the happiest person on ESPN FC today? Who is? shamelessly. It could be Frank. Chelsea got a big win. No, no, no. Maybe it could be, but I have never seen You've never seen me this happy. I've never seen a certain somebody be so shamelessly happy. We're supposed to be unbiased and balanced out here.
33:26Manchester United got a massive win over a hard fighting Ipswich. I have a question. I have a question. Do you see the tattoo shining under the table? Because I see it from here. Yep, she was. Yep, yep, yep. It's hidden because I've been sitting. All right, just, oh, I have the extra. Oh, we have the extra. We got the questions. We got the questions. All right, let me see if I can get the right ones, Jack. Don't worry, because we have two versions. All right, one, one. That's a lot of paper. That's a lot of paper. Save the trees. All right, I think I found the right ones. The first one from Paul, right?
34:00Yes. Frank, Chelsea is winning, but is that style sustainable? 25 % possession today, 39 % against Fulham, and five goals conceded in two games. Are the results papering over the cracks? I don't think so. I think, and I want to believe that Shebbi Lanzo, especially today, did it on purpose. They wanted to let Brighton get the ball, maybe because he feels that his team is not capable of doing that kind of football right now and because, you know, choosing the verticality is maybe the best option for him. Yes, it seems to be a little bit too low, especially against Fulham or maybe with all due respect Brighton, but it is what it is.
34:47And at the end of the day, it works offensively when they scored seven goals in two games. there is the other side of the coin where they can't see too many goals and let's see how it works let's see how it works next Sunday against Arsenal that would be that would be the big challenge to see how it works because they won't get the ball they won't have they will have like 25 position of the ball but what do they do if they they're very fast in in counter-attack and and and be capable of scoring goals like I think they they will be able to with Pedro with Neto with, of course, Palmer and Roger.
35:24Everything is possible. So, so far, so good. We still have some question marks. We wait and see. But let's be positive about Chelsea. Gab, how do you see it? Yeah, I mean, I don't think you judge on possession in a situation like this when somebody scores. You take the lead early on. Brighton are happy with the ball. you're happy kind of hitting them on the counter. I wouldn't necessarily read too much into it there. Obviously, there's going to be, you know, they will have to need, they'll have to learn how to play with a lot of the ball against teams that park the bus, maybe take an early lead, and they have to be comfortable with it.
36:07I think they can do that. I think both Palmer and Rodgers are not just counter-attackers. They're people who can drop deeper and playmate. I think what's going to put them over the top, you know, is if a passer emerges from a deeper position. And who is that going to be? Is Lavia going to stay fit to do some of that? He's got some of that in his locker. None of the centre-halves are particularly outstanding passers, in my view. But, you know, Xabi Alonso watches the games too. He certainly has to have a plan for this. The plan's not going to be, let's just play on the counter the whole season.
36:46So I wouldn't be overly concerned about that. Right, next question is also about Chelsea. Shaq, do you think the basketball-esque football Chelsea are playing will secure them top four? Basketball-esque. I guess just end-to-end, and kind of similar to the first question, the fact that, yes, they're scoring goals and they're winning, but they're also conceding a lot. All right, I think Chelsea will finish top four. I'm not sure whether that addresses the question directly. I do think Chelsea will finish top four. We're two games in. I'm not reading too much into that just yet. Xavier Alonso is an incredible coach.
37:21I think Chelsea have a very good team, a very good squad. I expect Xavier Alonso to fix some of the issues that we've seen. But it's also good that you have these issues, but you still have six points. You take that all day, every day. Frank? I have a question for you, Xhaka, because two days ago we had a show where you express yourself about Liverpool finishing second of that league. Do you still think the same or are you going to change your mind? He stubbornly does. I think I changed my mind yesterday. Two days ago, I thought one thing. Yesterday, I changed my mind. I'm thinking another. Shekka, we literally had digital hits yesterday morning after Liverpool played and you said for the sake of your top three predictions, you're sticking with Liverpool.
38:12So by the time FC came in the end, you changed your mind. Yes. Yes. Oh, fickle. Fickle, fickle, fickle. This is a quickly sliding scale around here. Oh, my days. All right. Next question is for Gab. And we're talking about an Italian Gab. Gab, what did you make of De Zerbe's very Conte-like comments after yesterday's loss?
38:39Look, Zerbi shoots from the hip. I actually think, you know, you say they're Conte-like. I think with Conte, 99.9 % of what he says is calculated and his plan is for effect. Whereas I think that Zerbi just opens his mouth and he just is very honest about what's inside. You know, when he talked about, you know, a week ago the team not having Seoul, and now talking this week about how it seems that everybody's down in the dumps. He's a real guy. This is what he feels inside. It doesn't mean that he makes the right decisions all the time. Some people may call it somewhat unprofessional. But, you know, I think in a world of phonies, having somebody who is as honest in his assessments as how he feels in that moment, like the Derby, is actually a little bit refreshing.
39:36And I say this as somebody who's been to hundreds, if not thousands, of press conferences over the years and watched flash interviews and stuff with managers who, you know, weigh their words very carefully and speaking cliches. So I don't mind Didzerby there. Can it become a problem for Spurs? Sure, it can become a problem for Spurs, just as it became a problem at Marseille, just as it was a problem before that at Brighton. and this is where the Zerbi's going to have to learn to, I think, draw the line. Being honest in public is fine. The issue is when you make bad decisions off of that internally.
40:12And I think some people in Marseille and at Brighton might suggest that that's why he didn't stick around at those clubs. Yeah, we do love a straight talker. And Frankie Leboeuf is a straight talker. So, Frank, the next question is for you. Before his goal today, João Pedro missed an easy chance with Ancelotti watching. As a player, how aware were you of national team coach visits? And did they affect you, either motivate you, flutter you in any way?
40:41I think I was told before the game that the national team coach was in the stand. And he put a little bit of extra pressure, for sure, because you want to make sure that he still fancy you. And in that case, for João Pedro, I think he might have thought about it immediately after that, but be relieved straight after scoring his goal. And I think Carlo Ancelotti is the guy who is in the most uncomfortable situation. We didn't pick him, which I think was a real mistake. João Pedro should have been in the Brazilian squad, in my opinion. and he's showing that right now that Ancelotti is wrong. But yes, it's always awkward when you have a coach.
41:27Well, it depends on the position you are in within the squad where if you know that you're going to go and after 90, when I signed for Chelsea, I don't remember Jacquet or Le Maire coming, but they would have come. I would have felt comfortable because I never wondered if I was able to be in the squad or not when they were making the list because I was entirely part of the squad and therefore I was okay. Shaq, you ever had a national team coach come watch you play for your club? Not that I can recall right now, but I'm with Frank. I think this adds a little bit of pressure, especially if, you know, let's be honest.
42:15Scaloni coming to watch Lionel Messi play adds no pressure to Lionel Messi. Exactly. That's the fun. He knows. That's just an evening out for Scaloni. That's all. But I mean, this is after a World Cup. Yeah, it didn't go Brazil's way. No major tournament coming up internationally. If you're, you know, a Lionel Messi on the fringes or just quite simply, not somebody of that status of Lionel Messi where you know you're going to be picked, I think inevitably it adds some pressure to you. You don't want to make that big mistake. Not now. He will see it on video or whatever later on, but not now, not when he's in his stance.
42:53I think that it adds some pressure to you. Maybe that's the same feeling Gab and I had when our parents would come watch us play in school sports. That's the only thing we can liken to. I don't know. No pressure like your parents watching, let me tell you. Next question for Gab. Gab, percentage chance that Ruben Amorim wins a title in his first season at Milan just shows the mediocrity of the Serie A if he does? Oof. Wow.
43:25Harsh. I don't know. I'm going to go maybe 10%, 20%. I mean, you know, we could joke, oh, the mediocrity of Serie A. Milan, weirdly, you talk about the mediocrity of the Europa League. Milan, weirdly, are among the favorites. I think they're second favorites or third favorites. But I think he's got a mountain to climb. I think he's bringing some genuine innovation to Milan. But yeah, Milan obviously aren't where they were. And I think it's going to be a long journey, and I'm not sure he's going to get there. But right now, Inter are overwhelming favorites for Serie A. And as I see it, and the window's still open, and Inter's teams, Italian teams, typically, especially when there's so much money around, you know, they get turned inside out in the last 24, 48 hours of the transfer window.
44:16But right now, the biggest threat to Inter, in my view, comes from Roma and Como, not from Milan. All right. Next question. We'll transfer talk here. Boys, Cody Gappo to Manchester City. What? Frank, would you make of that one if it happened?
44:40It doesn't mean anything to me. I mean, I always put myself on the players' foot where I say, what would be the point for Gakpo to go from Liverpool to Manchester City? Mane? Maybe. Game time? Not sure at all. you have Doku on that side who has proven many, many good things so if he's fit, he's going to play but Gagpo maybe because Barcola is coming he's not going to play but Gagpo right now is the best forward player of Liverpool so I don't know what it means to that and I don't know why City will need Gagpo overall I don't know why Liverpool would want to let him go I mean, he just showed even yesterday how useful he is I don't get this Listen, to Frankfurt, I get City's interest.
45:29Dak Puzo, good footballer. You have him in your books. Great. I'm not sure he starts for Manchester City. It's a move, I guess. Maybe you think that City are right now better positioned to challenge Arsenal. But then we might have thought that a couple of years ago when Liverpool went on to win the league. Outside of that, that you think, well, yeah, City are better positioned. in that regard, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me because I'm not sure that he plays. Gab, we're hearing£85 million for this one. That's a lot of money for somebody that these boys don't think even will start at Manchester City.
46:07So what is the likelihood of this happening? I don't know. When this story first came out, I was pretty sure that it was his agent talking and it wasn't so much City but maybe to light a fire under somebody else who might want Gakbo. It appears that that hasn't happened. Will we get some weird musical chairs where Marmouche goes to Spurs and Gakpo goes to City to kind of replace him in that Marmouche role? I don't know. I think the appeal for Gakpo is that with Savio moving on, sure, you're not going to start, but if Doku's fit. But there's a lot of games, Doku's fitness record is what it is. You would probably be the first alternative to Erling Haaland up front as well.
46:55And we know that, for now at least, Maresca seems to like having his wingers, which is why it's hard to cram Foden and Scherke into the same lineup, although we saw that, I think, with great success Friday night. I guess that would be the appeal for Liverpool. Yeah, it's a lot of money and it helps pay for Marcola, but are you sure that this is what you want to do, especially remembering that there is an alternative to centre-forward until Ike Tigue comes back to Alexander Isak. So I don't know. I don't particularly like this move at all. And if it is 85 million, that is the only reason Liverpool will be doing it.
47:36Well, next question we're going to stick with, Gab. Gab, why has Victor Orsiman lacked suitors from any teams in the top leagues? A question that we seem to ask every single summer transfer window. Oh, man, a year ago, a year ago, right? I was sitting here and saying like, guys, Premier League teams, Aussie men, you go and you blow these enormous amounts of money, more than what Aussie men cost, incidentally. On who? On Gyokeres? On Isak? On Sesko? Guys, I'm all for youth and whatever. All right, Isak is a slightly different argument. But then again, it was also what, like twice the transfer fee?
48:17Yeah, I really don't get it. I think some people in his entourage have developed a reputation unfairly, I think. And that has scared people away. Yeah, I don't, I'm a huge Ossieman fan. And when I look at, you know, who's playing at centre forward for the big six in the Premier League, personally, I'd rather have Ossieman than the current Liverpool centre forward. I'd have Aussiemen more than the current United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, centre-forwards. I just don't see it. I would take Holland over Aussiemen in case you're keeping a score at home. But still, I'm dumbfounded. I think reputations, I think stereotypes, and I think certain intermediaries having a certain hold over certain clubs.
49:14We'll just leave it at that. Frank, how highly do you rate him? Do you believe he belongs at least in one of the top clubs in Europe, if not the Premier League?
49:23I rank him like one of the best. And I've seen him starting with Lille and I was really amazed by his talent and his way of skill that he had and the power and the trust, the confidence that he had on his football. and that was insane and when he signed for Naples I wasn't surprised and the fact that he has so much success was for me normal and I'm with Gav on that matter I don't understand so people clubs must know better than us more than us because that's a big mystery for me and when I I see Barcelona, for example, trying to get Juliana Vares for big money. Maybe it will cost too much to have Ozymane, but that would be a perfect fit for me.
50:16Like it would be for Arsenal, as Ka mentioned, and some other teams. So I don't understand. Maybe Ozymane will be capable, after his career, to explain what happened. Maybe he's coming from the entourage, maybe from a bad reputation or a false one. But that's really a mystery because for me, he's still, well, he's been a while since I've seen him play. But he's been one of the best, if he's not the best, striker at some point in the world. All right, let's go to the final question for Xhaka. Xhaka, what sort of antics did you have as a goalkeeper? None. Were they like Emi Martinez? No. As everybody's been saying over the last few days, I'm very normal.
51:08Normal is not the word I would use, but very subdued, very demure. You're very demure, very cutesy, very demure. So no antics is the final answer. No antics. Nothing at all, not a little face movements. No. No? Very normal. Final answer. Final answer. There you go. Shaka was boring. But he got the job done. He got the job done. He got the job done. Rolly credits. Shaka doesn't like to talk about himself. Shaka doesn't like to talk about himself. All right. Well, there'll be more ESPN FC coming your way tomorrow.
