In short

The episode is an ESPN FC World Cup recap and preview focused on Portugal’s 1-1 Group K draw vs DR Congo and the debate over Cristiano Ronaldo’s role, plus England’s 4-2 win over Croatia and broader tournament impressions.

Guests

Ali Krieger (USWNT defender, World Cup/club experience), Nadia Manua (football analyst/presenter), Kieran Gibbs (former Arsenal/England defender), Frank Leboeuf (two-time World Cup winner, former France defender/analyst), and Craig Burley (former MLS/US international, analyst).

Key claims

Portugal’s issue wasn’t only Ronaldo—Portugal lacked team chemistry and variety; Roberto Martinez’s decision to keep Ronaldo on for 90 was questioned, though some agreed it made sense if they needed a goal.

Notable examples

Ronaldo created in the box but lacked service; Bernardo Silva’s halftime removal was criticized; Gonzalo Ramos was introduced late. England’s turnaround was credited to halftime adjustments and Harry Kane’s influence; Jude Bellingham’s goal was analyzed via a fast build-up from Rhys James/Elliot Anderson.

Coming up, 24 hours after Messi's stunning solo performance, it was anything but a virtuoso from Ronaldo. Should Portugal consider dropping their maestro? And Kane was the conductor for England, as the three lions hit all the right notes deep in the heart of Texas.

0:48Strike up the band, we'll have a symphony of voices. Recapping another fantastic day of World Cup action on ESPN FC. next.

1:05It is day eight of the 2026 World Cup. Welcome into our ESPN FC studios. Ali Krieger alongside us. Nadia Manua and Kieran Gibbs has decided to come back for more. I am Kane. We're going to be looking back on everything that we saw yesterday and talking about what's ahead today as we enter match day two in the tournament. But Portugal's Group K opener with DR Congo ended in a 1-1 draw. The headline here, this won't do in a baller. In Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo lasting the full 90 in this game and under even more scrutiny because of the day before. Mbappe, Haaland and of course Lionel Messi scoring multiple goals in their games.

1:48Frank Leboeuf joins us now, we will get into all of it. But Frank, what's the t-shirt today please? Oh my God. You know, I want to share the fame with the 2018 team. So, yeah, I don't know if you see the two stars there. And supposedly, that's the 1998 World Cup. And you have my name somewhere. I couldn't find it. I had the T-shirt for 10 years. I couldn't find it because you have Zidane everywhere, of course. Deschamps, Blanc, Desailly. But supposedly, I'm somewhere. But I feel I'm in it. Frank, at least that one's a little bit more subtle than the one you had yesterday They were just a big World Cup splashed on the front, mate.

2:27Yeah, but I wanted to step up yesterday. I wanted to show, you know, the win. That's nice, Frank. You're outnumbered today. I'm a French guy, very humble. You're outnumbered today. We have a two-time World Cup winner on the final. Not the only World Cup winner here today, Frank. Someone who's won it twice, Frank. A real legend. A real legend. Ali, like that. All right, Frank. Let me say with you, let me get your reaction to Portugal yesterday and this whole conversation of Cristiano Ronaldo? Well, I think, you know, sometimes, you know, I've been critical towards Ronaldo because I don't like the kind of selfishness when we put in football where somebody is the star of the team.

3:09But I want to defend Cristiano Ronaldo. He wasn't the only one who didn't perform well. That was the entire team. And he didn't do what everybody was expecting. But again, it's a team sport. And if you don't provide what you need to provide to Ronaldo, like you had to do for Messi or to Kylian Mbappé or Erling Haaland or Kane that we're going to talk after, he won't score or he won't have many opportunities. So it's a bad start, but it's been a bad start for Brazil and so many other teams, Spain too. So let's see how it works for the second game. I'm pretty sure that Portugal is going to go through the group stages and perform well into that workout.

3:54But it's more a question about Martinez and why Ronaldo wasn't saved, I would say, in some energies for next game, playing the 90 minutes. I don't know why he insisted on keeping him. He said it because he will score goals, but I don't believe that is what it is. Yeah, that's what he's obviously said afterwards. Roberto Martinez has said, we needed a goal and we kept our goal scorer on the pitch for the full 90 minutes. Do you agree with what the coach did, Ali?

4:20Cristina Alexander:Yeah, I can agree with that. But I think just as a collective, it wasn't a team performance. There was a bunch of individuals and it just looked disconnected at times. And I think the chemistry was just off. And I think they really struggled to stay connected as a group and find answers. and Cristiano Ronaldo, yeah, he needs the players around him to provide him that type of service that he's asking for but he's in and around the box, he's creating what he can but it just wasn't good enough. Big conversation on last night's show, Nadem. Are you still feeling the same way that you were heading into the tournament that Ronaldo has to be starting and has to be the figure in this Portugal team?

4:54Yeah, I think so. I think the point that Frank's made there about not making it about Cristiano Ronaldo is fair because other players didn't perform to their best either and I think Ronaldo, one thing about him at this stage of his career is that it's going to be built around service. I think gone are the days where he will just conjure up some magic from absolutely nowhere and that's fair, that's normal but I thought Portugal yesterday were just really, really disappointed and I think Roberto Martinez's point is a good one as well because if they do need a goal, why is this the time to take off Ronaldo?

5:23I thought personally, when I saw Di Alcongo play in the back three I thought he would have gone with two strikers. I thought that would have been the answer and towards the end that's what he went for when he brought on Gonzalo Ramos. but it was like 80 minutes too late. I just don't see it personally. I think sometimes people want to always look at things through that lens of Ronaldo. So if it works, maybe it's because of him. If it doesn't work, it's because of him. But I think that does a sort of disservice to the nature of the game itself and the team they're playing against, as I'm sure Kieran will tell you.

5:48Yeah, I just don't think they were set up to succeed yesterday. I think we can always point holes at individual players, but, you know, you've got, it felt a little bit like round holes in square pegs. I think you had players like Bernardo Silva, Vettinia, Neves, Fernandes. All these players are quite similar. And so in football these days, you just can't get away with that. You need variety and you need different ideas. And they just look like they were one-dimensional yesterday. And I don't think you can just put that on Cristiano Ronaldo. I think as a collective, I think the manager really needs to probably look at himself.

6:29you need players that can make a difference by beating players and these types of players, they don't possess that that's not what their game is based on so we don't want to get carried away, it's just the first game but definitely question marks over the manager for me more than anything So yes or no, do you start Ronaldo in the next game? I think if you would, you would have to organise the team around him better I think you need a little bit more pace on the wings. You need more directness, crosses in the box. And like Nadem said, more service. So, yeah, I think if you are going to start him, then you need to, that front three behind him is just crucial as to those, who that personnel is going to be.

7:21Yeah, I think, in my opinion, we've had two things. Firstly, when it comes down to say this Portuguese side, like very rarely do I say that manager got it wrong But I think he got it wrong in terms of the setup I think having to take off Bernardo Silva at halftime because he wants a winger to say go against Diarongo Like that shouldn't have been a surprise how that game was going to go I think they liked the matchup on that side And then you could maybe either go for two strikers or go for two wingers They're going to pin back their two wingbacks and create space for others But he didn't really do that, which is a big surprise given how experienced he is But then the other side, like you say Ronaldo, we think about Messi year, as they've gotten older, I genuinely believe because of the way Messi plays, he's going to age in a better way than Cristiano Ronaldo because Messi can have an influence in the game wherever he likes.

8:03He isn't, like we were being critical yesterday for Ronaldo for not running in behind. Have you ever said Messi needs to run in behind more? That's not really a part of the game that matters to him as such and he will do it, but there are other parts coming to the ball, getting a feel for the game. Say it's not about service for Messi, but for Ronaldo it isn't as it should be for a number nine. So I think in some ways, as I say, these years have been more harsh to him. The critiques have been more difficult because now he's in a position whereby no one has the discussion about whether Messi should start or not.

8:31Nobody. But for Ronaldo, it's like, well, is he holding the team back? And I just don't think he is. I think it's a service. Fair point.

8:37Cristina Alexander:Yeah, absolutely. I also don't think this tournament would be defined by just Ronaldo as the individual player, but they do need him on the field because of his experience, because of his leadership, because of the quality of the goal-scoring opportunities that he can create and be a part of. And he also draws, as a defender myself, I would be, you know, he'd be in my back pocket all game. And you'd have to, you know, pay attention to him consistently, but then that leaves other space and other opportunities for players to, you know, get into the attack as well and open up space for them like Maynard just had touched on.

9:10Cristina Alexander:So, yes, I would start him and then see how the next game goes. I've got to say, by the way, just to jump in, I don't know if this is a lost in translation thing, but in the back pocket in England means you've got it totally in the control. So, yeah. I know what you're trying to say. You just have to think. You have to keep your head on a swivel. You have to know where he is at all times. You're saying you've got to stay touch tight. You have to affect him in a way physically, whether that's a baller or him. And I think that as defenders, he attracts a lot. He's their man. He's their forward. He's that attacking player who's going to score the goal.

9:43Cristina Alexander:So, of course, defenders are going to be attracted to that. Yeah, he's breathing over your shoulder all the time. If that's what he's into, then yeah. Frank, you get the final say on this very positive Cristiano Ronaldo segment. Yeah, because we have to defend him. The way that Tim was shaped up, you know, I didn't really like it because Bernardo Silva likes to come inside. Benetok likes to come inside. So, therefore, you don't have the crossy that Ronaldo can be very attracted to where he can go near post, far post, or with his header being very efficient. And we didn't have that, you know. So they're expecting Ronaldo to make runs in the space.

10:25No, he doesn't run anymore like he used to because he's 41 and it's just fair. So you have to, I agree, I don't know who said that, Nidham, I think, who said you have to change the way of thinking the game, tactically rethink the total thing that you were putting in, and I'm talking about Roberto Martinez, to make sure you properly serve Ronaldo. Hopefully, he's going to start next game and they're going to change that mindset because otherwise it's not going to work. Okay, good stuff. So, Cristiano Ronaldo, we'll see if he does start the next game for Portugal. The hype is still going for Lionel Messi as it stands right now.

11:03But before we get to that, we do want to show you the small group of the Archongo fans in Lisbon yesterday in the public fan zone celebrating the goal for their team. I love that. Total scenes. Just everybody else, stony-faced, as you can imagine, all the Portuguese around. But these are the scenes that we love to see. Football is, of course, a global game. This is how things are looking in Group K. After the first round of games were played, Colombia with a 3-1 win over Uzbekistan. And they put themselves on top of the table and Portugal and DR Congo playing out that one-all draw. Lionel Messi, the conversation continues.

11:48And so too does the excitement about what we saw in the first game for Argentina. A game in which Messi scored his first World Cup hat-trick. We mentioned football being a global game and fans celebrating everywhere. where we also got to see university campuses in the capital city of Dhaka, in Bangladesh, massive fan zones, also here in Birulia, celebrating Argentina. Now, Bangladesh famously hosts one of the largest and most passionate groups of Argentina football fans outside of South America. We saw it in 2022, and it remains very strong, as you can see, in 2026.

12:29Cristina Alexander:This is what the World Cup is all about, Ali. Yes, this has been incredible. It's bringing people together from different cultures and backgrounds and languages. You don't have to speak the same. You're so passionate about the beautiful game. You could share that with each other and just seeing the excitement, you know, that the world is actually coming together in such a dark time, I think. And that's what's been so powerful and so lovely to see. And a lot of the nations who are scoring goals and tying games, maybe not as popular, or the younger generations see that. And they see that they could be in that same position.

13:05Cristina Alexander:And I think that's been so powerful, too. Like Congo and Curacao and these other nations just playing so well and being able to score their first goals in the tournament. and then the fans are erupting and just so excited to be a part of that and see that passion that's been incredible. This is all because of Messi that we're seeing. Swarves of Argentina fans in Bangladesh. He's about to turn 39 and he's still delivering at the highest level. Listen, he's still young. I'm 39. He's still young. I don't know why he's going to make that seem like that's a problem. But I think for three years, Messi and Ronaldo, they are at times almost bigger than football itself.

13:41Having been lucky enough to travel around the world, One thing that you will see these days, especially with young people, you'll see a Lionel Messi into Miami shirt. You'll see a Ronaldo Al Nasser shirt. Being able to go to the World Cup in 2022 in Doha. I remember going to watch a game for Portugal. And the people getting on that train weren't all from Portugal, but they adored Cristiano Ronaldo. I think these two, in some ways, ascend the sport. And when you have moments like this, when everybody's watching anyway, it's the World Cup. And obviously, Argentina have great history with the World Cup itself.

14:08And you see one of the most significant players in the history of the game. score a hat-trick in that manner. Not only was it watched live, but it would be watched probably millions, if not billions of times afterwards as well. So it's great to see that the old boy can still do it. Isn't this amazing, Frank? It is amazing, and he deserves that. I mean, he's a genius, and he makes the difference. But again, what we talked about Ronaldo before, it's not all about Lionel Messi. I mean, the teamwork behind him, and we saw that in 2022, and I was very surprised to see that again for this World Cup.

14:47It's simply amazing where everybody works for the genius, and it's why it works, and it should be the same for Portugal. You have to serve Ronaldo if you want Ronaldo to shine. Then after, yeah, we talk about Messi, Messi, Messi, Messi, but if Messi doesn't have 10 other fantastic teammates, Messi doesn't exist. I'm very sorry. I love Messi. He's a real fantastic player, and like Ronaldo for the past almost two decades, but without these teammates and that's what we have to emphasize that's what you have to witness as bandits is without these teammates that guy couldn't provide what he provided the last game.

15:25Yeah, a lot of love for Messi and Ronaldo here today on our morning show and rightfully so we are lucky to be in an era that these two guys are still playing. Head on over to our YouTube channel though for the question on whether Lionel Messi should have been sent off against Algeria, Nadam and Craig Burley. Getting into it there You can catch it over on YouTube. Now, England took their time to warm up, but it all changed in the second half as the Three Lions roared on their entry to World Cup 2026. That's next.

15:56Cristina Alexander:You know, recommendations can be great. Maybe someone recommended this podcast, and here you are. But home projects are different. 16:40It was a tale of two halves as England beat Croatia 4-2 in Texas. And look at some of the papers. Texas Cane score massacre. You've got to love the British tabloids. Bells and whistles, England's entertainers. And rawsome. Harry Jude and Marcus giving three lions. the ideal start for two. It would finish. Frank LaBeouf joining us for this game. Wanted to start though, Kieran, with you. Something you said yesterday on last night's show, where would we be without Harry Kane? Oh, yeah. I mean, it gives me shivers to be honest. I think, you know, we've seen him perform now for the last decade in an England shirt and, you know, I don't think we've taken it for granted but the level of performance from him has been incredible.

17:25I mean look at the amount of goals just this season alone. He continues to mould his game and score different types of goals but influence the game at the same time and this is what I love about him. Team player, leader, always steps up in the biggest moments, puts the pressure on himself and he is our legend. He's our legend and I think he's gonna go on to break more boundaries. I love the way he took that second goal yesterday. I'm not sure why he wasn't marked by the way, but most dangerous man on the planet at the moment. But yeah, no just really happy to see him still delivering in an England shirt and I think there's a lot more to come from him this tournament.

18:16He literally leads from the front, Nadeem. Well from that heat map just leads from everywhere. That's true as well. You actually don't know where he's going to be. You don't. And I think, obviously, that those... You know he's going to be in the right place at the right time. You know he's going to be in the right place at the right time. And in fairness, for the set-piece goal, that was set up for him. I think there were parts of the game where he did play well. But I think, for me, like, obviously he's an icon. But I love the sort of support and cast around it and how it sort of complements him.

18:41I think the Jude Bellingham goal, for example, comes because they don't have... Like, Harry Kane doesn't really run in behind, doesn't really play on the shoulder as much. So you need players that are going to do that. And I think Bellingham is that. You know, it's probably the reason why. say the likes of Gordon, Nadueke, Rashford and Saka are going to be so pivotal for England. But then to talk about negatives, he's probably the reason why I say Cole Palmer and like Phil Foden aren't in there because they're more traditional number 10s. But his goal record is incredible. It's absolutely incredible.

19:07And I think when he roams, he can have huge impact. I thought at times yesterday, he probably went a bit too deep when he was going in to sort of get the ball from the centre-halves. But when he's on the field, England know they've got a chance. And when they know that he can score in that manner, if everyone else is doing the job that's required of them than their dangerous side. Let me ask you something, Ali, because much has been made and we've heard the coach and the assistant coach talking about the team talk at halftime and just the difference that positive team talk can make. The difference between the first half and the second half and correcting things was outstanding and there for all to see.

19:39Cristina Alexander:Yeah, it was unbelievable, the shift that happened, I think more mentally than the physical aspect part of it because they proved that they could score goals. But I think that mental shift in the game of, okay, let's play with a little bit more freedom. Let's be a little bit more decisive. Let's just go out and play our game and not stress about, I think Tuchel had said this as well, about protecting something and not being able to play free and just play the way that we want to play. And I think that going back to Harry Kane, I think he's playing now a little bit unpredictable. Like he is coming back a little bit deeper, but then that allows the other attacking players that space to run in behind and to play free up top, which created, I think, a few more opportunities.

20:20Cristina Alexander:And then on the defensive side of the game, I thought he saved that goal at the very end, which was so impressive, even though he came all the way back. But there was a definite shift at halftime for the mentality, for them to go out and just have, what do the English call it? A man possessed. A man possessed. About Jude Bellingham and Kane as well. And I think that is a perfect definition of what transitioned. Frank, are we seeing a new era for England? well he already is i mean the prince harry they already called him or very soon the king harry uh is a real model and uh yeah he's a he's a huge star i mean uh um ali said he's uh he's unpredictable but every everything that he does he's very thoughtful he's a very intelligent guy playing the the the football the way he thinks the football so um sacrificing uh for for the teammate by being selfish at the right time at the right moment being very clever on his runs and on his move on the passes that he made in the first half and he's trying to pass to Maduiki that he almost went through that was a piece of diamonds for me everything he does and on top of it if the Croatian they leave him alone on the second goal with the header it goes easier for him but But what a model.

21:39It's a real model for everybody, how to behave on the field, how to work hard, and how to be successful. So that was the most entertaining game for me so far. The first half, especially. After the second half, England were better because of the change of mind. Well done, Mr. Tourelle, on the way that he talked to the team. But that was a very good game from England, and especially Harry Kane. Yeah, a lot of excitement around England right now, particularly with the attacking performance that we got to see from them. Just taking a look at how Group L is shaping up and we do want to talk about Jude Bellingham who scored seven England goals in major tournaments, four of them, sorry coming in major tournaments, seven England goals in total.

22:21The most recent came in the 47th minute. Here's the England fans celebrating that. We were a bit shaky at first but we really got it together and in the second half we should have scored a bit more but it was a great game. We were confident, we were progressive, we played good football, we played force, we played that game. A few times, they came back in, but we knew we had this, yeah. It was all in England, all the way through. We knew this, we had this. It was a great day all round. That was beautiful. That was probably the best game we've been to many World Cups. That was the best World Cup game we've ever seen, it was wonderful.

22:53Yep, here are the fans. In London, celebrated Jude Bellingham's goal, which proved to be the game winner. How did the goal come about? Well, we've put Kieran to task with Nadem today over at the sandbox to tell us. Right, so, Davey, great to have you. Pleasure. What could possibly go wrong? Let's break it down. Let's break down Bellingham. Yeah, let's break down probably one of the most important moments in the game. I thought in the first half, England, even though they scored two goals, they looked a little bit nervous. I thought Croatia, in my opinion, were the better side. But I think there was a very big statement of intent as that second half started.

23:29and it all begins back here with the ball that gets played to Rhys James from Esri Konza and then Eli Anderson comes and I think he's a key player in this move because as this ball goes to him here, this is where the game changes because for us as former defenders, emphasis on former defenders, you want to be able to come and apply pressure here wherever you can. You want to be on the front foot, make people uncomfortable and if we do that, then it's comfortable, isn't it? Yeah, and this is exactly what we noticed in the first half. I thought Croatia held a really good line and they were aggressive in the press.

24:00And I felt like the game from England needed this type of pass from Anderson. But what I thought was really important was actually the speed at which it goes from Konza to James. And then the one touch, just that inviting pass for Anderson to just hook it on. It didn't give these defenders any time to get set. 100%. And so once that ball goes in behind and you've got Madweke and Bellingham running onto it, it's very difficult. Absolutely, and I think to make the point again, Bradio wants to come this way, Perisic wants to come this way, all the defenders want to come this way. But from that ball from Rhys James to Eli Anderson being so good in his first time, you know the ball is actually going to be going in this direction.

24:42But I think there were some key players that knew that was going to be the case. And those players were Jude Bellingham and Noni Madweke. and as they ran into that space, the ball comes forward from Elliot Anderson. And what I really liked actually, because you can make the case that Madiweke and Bellingham made the same run. So you think that they would be in each other's way. But Madiweke sensed that and he moved away, allowing Jude Bellingham to come into there. And then could you please do me the honour to finish in that? Yeah, I mean, just before, because obviously, you know, as Jude Bellingham comes in and closes his angle, this is what separates the good players from the great players.

25:17and I thought the way he used his technique to kind of, he almost looked like he scuffed the ball. Yes. But I think he did it on purpose to get that angle on the ball and feed it into the far corner. But let me see how I can get on here. See, will he finish? Bang! Yes, he will. Yes, he will. As easy as Jude Bellingham's finish yesterday. But no, fantastic second half from England. I think that they have really stamped their authority onto this tournament. and I'm excited to see how they progress from here. I think they've got a good balance to the team and what I like is that they didn't overcomplicate.

25:57In the second half, they came out, they used their wingers to get crosses in, the midfielders opened up the players in the back line of Croatia and then you just had world-class finishes to finish it off. So I'm excited to see what they do from here. Listen, we weren't quite as good as England were in the second half yesterday, but it all did. So back to you, Ke. Thank you very much, guys. Well done. Yes, there were a lot of rumours pre-tournament as to whether Jude Bellingham would be and should be in England starting 11. But Thomas Tuchel put all of those rumours to rest by naming him in the starting line-off.

26:35And Bellingham didn't just start. He put on a dominant display and silenced the critics, didn't he, Frank? How did the boys do first? Did we like it?

26:45I loved it. I loved it. You have to be fair. I don't like his comments, you know, emphasizing his great game, saying, you know, I'm the best of the best. What do you think about me? You know what? Just stay calm. It's the first game. But he had a great game. Yes. Yes. On that goal, you know, I'm a little bit concerned about Gouardio and what he did because he followed Maduike at a certain point. He should have shut down a little bit and helped covering his wing back to maybe go into Jude Bellingham. But all the action is great. And Jude had a great game. But the all-England squad had a good game.

27:21But yeah, we want to see Jude Bellingham at that level because England needs Jude Bellingham at that level if they want to achieve something. It's a great celebration, by the way. It is a great celebration. We need the sandbox to be getting the celebration, right? We should have done that, yeah. The Jude Bellingham celebration. How did the boys do at the sandbox, Ali?

27:41Cristina Alexander:They're phenomenal. They're phenomenal. I'm watching and learning constantly. I love the tactics. It's going to be Ali's head soon. There's more talk about England on the latest Gab and Jules show. We'll get to that in a minute, but we want to show you. England line, Dad said, I mean, when I heard that we had this, I was a little bit worried. I'll be honest. Actually, it doesn't look as bad as I thought. Kieran, you were just saying that we need a new celebration other than the beers getting thrown in the air. but if this is the alternative, I think we'll stick with the beers in the air, won't we?

28:13Yeah, I think so. You've got the Norwegians that do the rowing, you've got the Netherlands that do the side-to-side, and then England is just quite everywhere. I mean, the national team looked a lot more coordinated than this yesterday, it's fair to say. Have you ever tried line dancing, Nadem? I haven't tried it yet, but maybe one day. But in fairness, I think as a positive, England fans have been shown doing line dancing is better than some of the stuff we've seen in the past. Yes, that is true. Long may it continue. you stick around and make sure to check out the latest gavin jewel show over on our podcast feed there is a lot of talk about everything we saw yesterday and that is available now they will be breaking down england in today's edition the usa are back in action tomorrow but will christian politic be ready we'll find out when we return

29:15The US are back in action tomorrow but will Christian Pulisic be with them? He's been nursing that left calf injury that was picked up in training in the lead up to the tournament which was then re-aggravated when he took a kick in the calf in the opener against Paraguay. And here we see him training apart from the team. But we want to get the latest on the situation and the feeling ahead of Game 2 with Brendan Aronson and Anthony Robinson.

29:40Cristina Alexander:You know, hopefully, you know, Christian's going to be ready for the game because, you know, he's a big player to us and we really want him to be there, of course. But, you know, of course, everybody's got to be ready to go. The depth of this team is something that I've never seen before. And I really, it's really nice, you know, in trainings, you know, the sub-training sessions after the game and stuff like this, You can see the level of quality, the level of talent, and I think it's just truly amazing. So we can rely on each other on any moment. And yeah, like I said, coming up to this big Australia game, we're going to need everybody.

30:05Cristina Alexander:I think Australia, they were really comfortable defending and they put everything on the line. And obviously, they were a real big threat on the counter-attack as well. So training up in the next few days is just going to be about how we kind of nullify their threats and then what positions we need to get into to exploit their back line and obviously try and score goals. I think we've set a standard for ourselves and yeah we've set an expectation that if that's the level we can perform at then why not do that all the time and it's not going to be as easy as we're just going to turn up and play a perfect game every time there's going to be moments where we're against it and we have to figure out how to try and grind out results and win games when we're not doing so well.

30:40Cristina Alexander:I think teams get a lot of belief when you know that you've got boys in the team who can score goals and be a threat in the attack, and we have a lot of that. We had a lot of chances. I felt like we could have scored more goals. It's the same when you look at teams like France, like Argentina, like you said, the firepower they have and the quality up front, and they're going to rely on that because if they're not playing well at any moment, they've got players who can take the game by the scruff of their neck and get goals, and we feel like we have that, which is a bonus. And so Group D getting back underway for Game 2 as USA take on Australia as we'll remind you of how things look.

31:15Both United States and Australia getting wins in their opening games and now they will go head-to-head in Game 2. United States obviously very impressive, but now we have seen every single national team play and we head into Round 2. We want to talk about the most impressive displays or something that's impressed you most. We're going to start with you, Kieran. For me, it's got to be Cape Verde. I mean, I know probably people won't expect that and want to go for people like France and whatever, but I think that for a first World Cup appearance to get a draw against Spain, one of the best countries in the world at this sport, is pretty remarkable.

31:59A historic, historic day for them. Yes, it was. Ali Krieger, who have you got?

32:03Cristina Alexander:I have France. I've been extremely impressed with them. They look comfortable, they look confident, they look complete. They look like a team that is built for tournament football. And it's not just about Mbappe, which rightfully so, but what impresses me most is that they have such depth in their attack. They have Alicier, they have Dembele, they have Bercola, they have Cherokee, they have just so many attacking-minded players that have such influence on the team. and also they're coming off of a PSG confidence win so they've been super impressive to watch and really fun to watch. Nadim? I'm with Ali.

32:43I thought France were really, really impressive. Copycat. Yes, that is correct. I have no independent thoughts. I'm just copying what Ali Krieger is doing and I think with France, what I thought was remarkable was that first half I was looking and thinking, these guys are a bit overrated and then the second half I was like, these guys might be underrated because what they just did was ridiculous. And when you saw them in full flight, it made me think, how many teams have sort of matched up well enough to be able to stop them? And the answer is not many. Yeah, I think they're only saying it because Frank's here.

33:10Oui, oui. Frank, before we get to you, why have you gone viral in France at the moment? We've seen a comedian talking about you in a French standoff. Tell us what she's saying and tell us what's going on here. Well, somebody in the audience was complaining and was upset about me. And she asked why. And it was about a commercial about selling your car. and I'm the ambassador of that and I appear like four times in half an hour every day for like 24 hours a day in that commercial and it got viral because people can watch YouTube if they don't get a YouTube premium therefore they pay, they didn't pay so they have to have commercial and I'm there and they got very upset so they made some memes and everything but I'm becoming more famous than winning a World Cup because of that.

34:06So that's great. I love it. Basically, you're annoying people, Frank. Yes, and I love that, you know. It's part of my job. No, it's just very intense. We see me a lot and it's been like two years or three years like that and people say, Frank, we don't want to sell cars. We don't even have a car. Leave us alone. You know, and that's very funny. It became very viral, so it's nice. Love to see it. Frank, who's your most impressive team so far? Well, you know, I wanted to say France, but I'm not impressed because that's what I'm expecting from France. And they just did, especially the second half, what we wanted to see them doing.

34:51But Norway, because Norway, nobody talks about Norway, but they came, they scored four goals. The Cyborg is there, scoring goals, chasing everything. And I love the Vikings. And they don't talk a lot, but they do the job. And they have fantastic qualifications for that World Cup. And they keep on being at that level that I want to see them. So I don't want to be the Black Cat because after Denmark and Canada four years ago, I want Norway to go far and follow their path. Black cats are lucky where I come from, so maybe it could be that. Anyway, we've been talking about Norway. These are the fans doing the rowing up the escalators in Boston.

35:33Well, our resident Norwegian, Jan Agafjortov, he's in studio in Austria at the moment. He's been getting everyone in the studio to do it. What did you expect, Frank? Come on. Oh, well, well, you know, after running after a fish, now he's rowing. Whatever, that guy is amazing. This is true. And just to add some context there, we do have some footage of Jan racing a human fish. Yeah, it's as weird as it sounds as well. So it is better to see him rowing in a studio. Thanks so much for making your picks, guys. Great to hear. And obviously, we'll see how all of those teams fare. Thank you so much, Frank, for being with us.

36:08Make sure to check out our YouTube channel as the panel answer your questions every single day. You can get your own questions in and see them answered over on YouTube in extra time. Stick around with us though This is the crossover we all needed It's Mexico and South Korea And the dishes of their nations too

36:42The battle for Group A is on As Mexico and South Korea look to secure a round of 32 spots after both won on match day one. And that's what we're seeing in Mexico for the ticket to the next round. And we bring in our very own Christina Alexander to talk more about this game and everything that's been going on. But, Christina, we've got to start with this bromance that we're seeing between the fans in Mexico. I mean, this is so true. This is the crossover we all needed.

37:12Cristina Alexander:It's definitely the crossover that we all needed. We all continue to see. I'm happy to be with all of you here, by the way. Great translation. There, Kay. I'm very impressed. This goes back to 2018, right? When Korea helped Mexico out to be able to go into the following stage after beating Germany 2-0. At the time, I was living in Mexico, and all of the fans went to the Korean embassy to celebrate with all of the Koreans around there. And the usual chant is,

37:45Cristina Alexander:So it's like, Korean brother, you're Mexican now. It's basically always the chant that we hear. So this is 2018 that you're talking about. This is 2018, and this one truly hits home. I mean, Tough Korea really did us a solid one. I don't know what's going to happen tonight, but that's all up in the air. But it's all up at the end of the day. I can say that honestly. I don't know what's another rivalry, but yeah, all love. There is genuine excitement, though, surely, among the Mexican fans after match day one about tonight. There is. There is. Apprehension, too. I mean, and I say that with hesitance.

38:19Cristina Alexander:I think, as you all can feel, I'm kind of protecting my feelings here. I don't want it to be a jugamos como nunca, perdimos como siempre. You know, we played like we never have, but we lose like we always do. But hopefully, you know, it's a solid performance to be able to go into the following round. Obviously, we know that Cesar Montes won't be there tonight, but there are other options that Javier Ayrra has. But I digress. Yes, the fans, the Mexican fans every four years just really get this renewed sense of excitement, ilusión of really just hoping to see Mexico make it now to what it's going to be known as the sixth game.

38:56Cristina Alexander:But for its history, it's been el famoso quinto partido, the fifth game for Mexico. So maybe quarterfinals. The extended World Cup making it even more difficult now. And awaiting in the round of 16 could be... Oh, you're moving for Oswald. Oh, hang on a second. Oh, right. Are you surrounded? Oh, I'm going to be back. Oh, she's surrounded. England. Or Croatia. Or Croatia. Has there been talk about what goes on beyond? I mean, obviously, yes. Yes, because we like to see things big picture, right? And I think that's also smart for the Mexican national team to do because that also comes into how you prepare for the World Cup, what sort of rivals you're able to get, whether it's Belgium or Portugal, we know here in the lead up as well.

39:39Cristina Alexander:But England and Croatia, after what we saw yesterday, I don't think anyone is safe, especially, and not just because you're my friend here, okay, and all of you are my friends. For now, we can talk later. But for now, Mexico has to get the job done, and then they'll have to really do their homework, if it's England, if it's Croatia. Always great to have Christina Alexander with us here in the studio. But what about the flavors of each nation? Mexico and South Korea while Ali Krieger and Alexis Nunez caught up with the Food Network chef Bobby Flay for more.

40:15Hey everybody, I'm Bobby Flay here in New York City at my friend chef Sam Hazen's restaurant Palladino's Steak and Seafood with some World Cup cuisine match-ups.

40:30Cristina Alexander:Excited about this match-up now that we get to have in the group stages of the World Cup. Mexico, our CONCACAF brothers, up against South Korea. Find me someone that doesn't like Mexican food and I'll fight them. From Mexico, Hugo Sanchez, we have a Oaxacan mole with some Spanish rice, some beautiful fresh corn tortilla. So mole is one of the most interesting sauces in the world. Very often it's finished with a little chocolate to kind of balance out all the chilies. There's nuts, sesame seeds, yes, tortillas to thicken it. It goes on and on and on. It's one of the most complex sauces in the world.

41:09Cristina Alexander:We haven't even tried South Korea, and I feel like we already... I think they've already lost. Uh-oh! Really? Really. Can we get three margaritas, please? Yeah. Chef's standing by, and let's bring in South Korea. This is for Korea, and because of sunny, we had to do a sunny-side-up egg. Oh! I love that! And so this is with some pork belly, kimchi, steamed rice, with a skillet egg. Enjoy. Beautiful. What's the base of kimchi? Just cabbage, right? Yeah, it's cabbage, and then it has, you know, tons of spices in it. It's usually fermented for a very long period of time, and it probably has a sweet and spicy kind of glaze on top of it.

41:46Cristina Alexander:Oh! Uh-oh. Uh-oh. Uh-oh, Mexico, don't raise the trophy yet. There's always an egg on top. Always. So then you kind of, like, mix it all together with the crispy and fluffy rice. It's so good. They play exciting football. I feel like we always see that energy from South Korea. Mexico at home is the great leveler. You will hear Mexico fans from Pluto. All right, Ali, who wins now on the plate? Both were so flavorful, but then all of the Mexican cuisine together, I feel like that's my winner. It all was just melted in my mouth. So Mexico wins on the plate. Bobby, on the pitch, who wins it? You know, obviously, I like to create a theme in my house, too, when I'm watching football.

42:31Cristina Alexander:And so I think it's going to be with some five-ingredient guacamole and lots of margaritas. So I'm going to go with Mexico. He's going with Mexico! All right. Sorry, Sonny. Can't deny the mole sauce.

42:47I mean, was it ever in doubt, Ali Krieger? Big Mexican food fan. Mexico wins, Ali.

42:52Cristina Alexander:Yes, I was wondering where my margarita was, actually, at the time. So we're going to have to redo that. I'll make you one friend. Thank you. Thank you. It was incredible. I mean, obviously, the South Korean dish was unbelievable. I mean, the spices and just the texture, but ultimately, the flavor of the mole just was top. All this food talk's got us hungry. I know. Chilaquiles, anybody? Yeah, well, good news is, Arsenal won the league for a very long time. Kieran Gibbs, we didn't get to celebrate with you. Wait a minute. Oh, wait a minute. Wait a minute.

43:29Do you know how much stick I had to take over the last two years? Can you hold it up a little bit to the camera without it sliding off? Oh, it's totally going to slide off. Let's see what we can do. Look at that. Can we get a picture next to Nades, please? Smile, Nades.

43:47Cristina Alexander:Love it, guys. Love it. Finally, a bit of love, you know? A little bite, Kieran. You can have your cake and eat it. Mordida, mordida. Oh, look. We won't need all these plates. Get that cake. Dish it up. Share it out. A little fork. Dina, thank you so much for being with us. Thank you. You're welcome anytime. Thank you. Especially if we get cake when you're on as well. Yes, absolutely. Make sure to catch that game and all the reaction to it. You can catch that on ESPN FC tonight, 11 p.m. Eastern. 44:20All right, Ciarán, get it dished up then. All right, all right. Ciarán is so upset. We're going to have his cake and eat it. It's been a good season for Arsenal. Is this for the Champions League final? Leave it out, you.

Czechia against South Africa, Switzerland taking on Bosnia, Canada against Qatar, And of course, Mexico coming off a little later on against South Korea. That's a mistake there in that. But don't worry, we will fix it. We fix it here. Don't you worry. All right, let's get started because the prediction king is joining us today. He let everybody know that's nice. Okay, let me start. I'm going to be a bit quicker today as well.

45:10I'm going to go draw. I'm going to sit on the fence. I'm going to sit on the fence for this one. But now that Christina's left. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. To be honest, I'm going to go for a draw as well. It should be a nice little positive moment for the two nations to clearly love each other.

45:24Cristina Alexander:That is a nice way of looking at it. I actually think Mexico is going to take this because of the home crowd advantage. Nice. Okay. Yeah. Mexico. Yeah. Alright. Okay, we'll see. Let's see. Okay, Czechia, South Africa. What have you got, Kieran? I think for this one, I'm going to say, I think Czechia need a response after their defeat. So I'm going to say Czech. Psych! I'm going this way. Psych! I'm going to say tie. I'll say tie between the two. I'll go with the boys. That's the right way to be. Switzerland and Bosnia. I'm going to send that over here. Same. Bosnia won't have enough for Switzerland.

46:11I'm with the boys. Same. Listen, that's a good decision. Good decision. This is it. This is going to be their first win. Psych Got him Yeah it's going to have to be Canada as well for me

46:27Cristina Alexander:Yeah I want to root for Canada as well Has to be this one Has to be this one Has to be What could go wrong Four of us in the same thing Alright What could go wrong What could go wrong World SOP winners The Tartan Army have drank the whole city dry Boston bars are blown away And Scotland fans party non-stop I mean, I'm so surprised to hear this. I can't believe it. There's no way. I absolutely can't believe it. They're not just in Boston though. They're in New York too for the Yankees game. Look at this. They are taking over. Got some money and money to spend it, eh? Isn't Jen celebrating with the rest of the Scotts today as well, Ali?

47:05Cristina Alexander:She is. Everyone needs to head over to the Scotland house in Boston today to see her and hanging out with all the fans. Is that Craig Burley in the crowd? Ali, how's your Scottish accent? It's not great. It's not great? No, it's not great at all. How's your Scott in Jackson? It's not bad. It's not bad. It's not bad at all. That was good. It's not bad at all. That's all I've got. They have been absolutely brilliant though, haven't they? Haven't they been great to see? Yeah, absolutely. I just need the team to continue in the good form. Yes, they do. You don't need to be a Scott to join in the celebrations.

47:34They're everywhere at the moment. So if you see a Scott, go and say hi. You're probably going to have a great time. But just be careful because as you see, those people, they can drink.
