In short

ESPN FC debate on whether Jose Mourinho could be appointed Real Madrid manager, plus broader discussion of club futures across Europe (Liverpool, Man City, England squad) and Serie A end-of-season drama (Como qualifying, Milan/Juventus missing UCL).

Guests

Kay Murray, Craig Burley, Stevie Nichol, Ian Fitzsimmons (host/lead-in), Steve McManaman, and Gab Marcotti (joins later). They discuss football management, tactics, and squad-building.

Key claims

Mourinho’s appointment would be surprising given his recent reputation and Real Madrid’s delicate dressing-room issues. The biggest problem is personality conflict and work-rate/effort, especially if Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. can’t coexist and don’t press. Real Madrid need major summer reinforcements (midfield, defense leadership, and full-back balance) and possibly one of the stars to leave. Liverpool’s Arne Slot likely stays but needs “five or six” quality signings; Man City’s Pep departure may reduce “luster,” and legal uncertainty could affect recruitment. In Serie A, Como’s Cesc Fabregas is praised for transforming the team; Milan’s overhaul follows missing UCL.

Notable examples

Mourinho’s past “antics” and the Prestiani interview involving Vinicius; Real Madrid’s sacking of Xabi Alonso; Barcelona’s dominance and entertainment factor; Liverpool’s poor season and lost leaders (Salah/Robertson); Como’s rise from amateur status; Milan firing Allegri and replacing sporting/CEO staff; Como’s attacking + best defense; Spain squad note that no Real Madrid players were selected.

1:10Hello and welcome into the latest edition of ESPN FC. Kay Murray, Craig Burley and Stevie Nichol here in the studio. A little later on, Gab Marcotti will be joining us to look back on all the drama of the final day in the Serie A And some big teams missing out on Champions League football. But we will begin in La Liga with a reminder how things finished in the table. Barcelona champions eight points ahead of Real Madrid who had a campaign to forget. Dressing room bus stops, Xabi Alonso sacked, players speaking out against the coaches. And now according to reports that continue to grow today, Jose Mourinho was set to be announced as the new manager.

1:49but that announcement has been delayed due to the upcoming elections at Real Madrid. However, we are going to discuss the possibility of Jose Mourinho coming to Real Madrid, just in case it is to happen. We do keep seeing those reports, so Steve McManaman is joining us now to talk a little bit more about it. Do you really think he's the coach to fix the problems here, Steve? Well, I think his name has surprised most people Particularly with the shenanigans that went on Between, you know, Jose Mourinho And the things he said about Vinicius Junior With the incident with Prestiani So I think it's came out of nowhere really I mean, we know Florentino Perez has always admired Jose But whether he's the man to fix it That name has surprised me I mean, as you rightly said it's off the table for this moment in time while the elections go on.

2:45And if somebody beats Florentino Pérez, maybe they've got another name in mind. But of course, Florentino Pérez is a huge favourite to win the election yet again. And it looks as if Jose will come in. But it has surprised me. He's 63 years of age. Of course, he was at Roma, then Fenerbahce and recently at Benfica. to jump back into the hot seat at Real Madrid. It's wonderful for him, but it did surprise me. I must admit, it really did. We've not spoken to you too much about this, Craig. It's like Marcus Rashford getting that move to Barcelona, which he pretty much took in his stride, where everybody's thinking he's the luckiest guy alive.

3:24As Macca said, Mourinho of yesteryear, you'd have been like, yeah, absolutely, but not of recent years. But clearly they're looking for, I'm going to say somebody to calm the situation down. and I'm not quite sure that he's going to do that. But clearly they're looking for a really experienced head. They had one in Ancelotti who was brilliant. They had a less experienced one in Xabi Alonso who had obviously issues with certain players, as a lot of the managers have had. And now they're going this route. Now, you know, as we are the rights holders of the Liga, I think it's going to be super fun for us watching, and I say the antics, but it could be the antics or it could be the frustration.

4:02It could be, you know, the headlines of working with Mbappe and Vinicius Junior and one or two others and trying to get them to do the things that Alonso and Ancelotti in the end were trying to get them to do, which was do the basics and work a little bit harder. So I think for us, obviously, it's going to be very intriguing because it's a big name coming back into a very delicate situation. But I think if you're a Real Madrid supporter and you're looking at Barcelona having the success again and you're looking at the way they've played and the entertainment factor, and we've heard a lot of the whistles this year at the Bernabeu again because, not just because of the results but because of the manner in which they've played and Maka, who's done many commentaries has said this on more than one occasion Real Madrid were very easy to play against and a lot of the lower teams in Spain went to the Bernabeu and sometimes outplayed them not always beating them but sometimes outplayed them and I think, I'm surmising Real Madrid fans as well as not getting the success We're fed up with what they were watching.

5:05And the big question is, as we know Mourinho, how he operates, is that going to improve the sort of wow factor of the football? I think not. Will it improve the results, Stevie? I mean, it might improve results, but it's not going to improve the entertainment factor. So there's a balance here. I can't... To be honest, football really isn't the thing that's in the forefront of my mind when I think about Real Madrid right now. you know this is going to be as big a test as he's ever had personality wise in that dressing absolutely you know right now we believe there's a there's a big split between vinnie's camp and bapie's camp now and in my experience those things don't go away and there's no question that when that happens in any dressing room it involves everybody because it you know everybody's human and you end up with your friends getting this and then the other guy's mates getting that and it just takes everything away from the football.

6:02Now, he's either going to be able to sort it or he's going to make it worse because of his personality because he doesn't back down from anybody and he doesn't take it from anybody. In his mind, he is the man and if you don't listen, you're in trouble. But we've seen already that both Vinny and Mbappe seem to be untouchable. So it's a toss of the coin which way this goes and honestly, my money's on it going wrong. Not going well. Do you know when you get one of those phone calls from your mates and you think they're putting something on because they're offering you something and you say something bad to them?

6:44It's almost like that for Mourinho, isn't it? In the sense that he probably can't believe that this opportunity, it seems, is going to arise because he was heading towards managing, probably at some point, the Portuguese national team and rightly so, I mean he's in his 60s and maybe, you know, just taking it a little bit easier and just floating off into the sunset. This is the complete opposite. This is diving straight into the bonfire headfirst. He knows obviously what it takes to be Real Madrid coach Maka and he knows what it's like to manage some big personalities. He's a big personality himself though.

7:22He had Cristiano Ronaldo in his last stint at Real Madrid But now, how will his personality go with the likes of an Mbappe and a Vinny Jr.? Do you think it could work? No, listening to the boys, I'm of the same ilk. They've got one team to beat, they've got one team to usurp, and that's Barcelona. They'll finish second, regardless of who's manager. But it's whether he can get those people on side. You know, he had Ronaldo. He left Real Madrid in 2013. That was 13 years ago. and his last four or five years at Roma and particularly Fenerbahce and Benfica, they're big teams. He was brought in for Fenerbahce to beat Galatasaray, which he didn't do.

8:03He was brought in for Benfica to go past Sporting in Porto again, which of course he hasn't done. The fact that he's got the Real Madrid job and he's got David Alaba leaving, of course, Dani Carver, Halgon, big names in the dressing room. Something is going to have to change. huge reinforcements are going to have to come in because if he just goes in with the squad available now, I think Danny Ceballos is going to leave as well. If he goes in with that squad now, there's no way he's going to turn it around. But he has to produce, or the president is going to have to do something to sort out this situation of, can Killian and Vinny Jr play together in the same team and work as hard as possible for the side?

8:46Because we haven't seen it yet. and unless somebody intervenes and says something strange or sells one of them, you know, Vinny's contract is up next year, unless something severe happens and one of them is to leave, then I think they'll have the same type of problems. And I'm worried about the antics as well, because as Craig rightly said, you know, Jose doesn't back down from everybody. You know, as a person, he's fantastic. You know, away from the football pitch, he's fantastic. But on the pitch, he gives it his all. and some of his antics in the past, the last time he was at Real Madrid with Tito Villanova for Barcelona and what happened then, and of course at Roma in the final against Sevilla, sometimes you look and go, Real Madrid do not need those type of antics.

9:32And as I mentioned before, the Prestiani interview after the game with Vinny Jr., that didn't look great on Mourinho. So he's going to have to calm down as well. Otherwise, it's going to make matters worse. So it's going to be, well if he does get the job it's going to be fantastic to sit and watch it all play out but from now with Vinny Jr and Killian and Jose going into the mix it just seems as if it's going to be fireworks and I'm with Craig and Stevie I don't know whether it's going to get any better unless something something monumental happens this summer with the squad itself and whether somebody leaves or people come in but it's going to be all much of the same to me next year Can those two be part of the same successful team, regardless of who the coach is?

10:20Well, maybe after the World Cup, maybe they'll have to go on a fishing trip. I mean, I don't know. You know, Mbappé and... Send them out on a boat, Mbappé and Vinicius on a little fishing trip, see if they can bond. I don't know. I don't know. There's big egos. I mean, if you're Florentino Perez, you have to... And once you get your manager, if it is Mourinho, you have to sit down with the two players in the camps. and you have to try and get them to bang heads and figure it out. And if you can't, one of them has to go. Now, just looking at the stats alone, the one that would have to go would Vinicius Jr.

10:55His goals are 50 % almost, are thereabouts of killing Mbappe. But then you've got the other side where usually they talk about Mbappe, you know, he doesn't work hard enough, doesn't do this, doesn't do that. Look at PSG, they're a better team rather than better individuals, they've got some great individuals, so there's that argument. So I don't know which way they're going to go. But what you do know is you can't have two of your star players continually bickering and fighting for the same piece of real estate. It's just not going to work from a team perspective. So, yeah. And listen, if Mourinho, if he goes back in there and somehow, you know, gets on top of Barcelona, which is a big F, by the way, because Hansi Flick has been brilliant and they are so good to watch.

11:40But if he does, all of a sudden he's the peacock again, isn't he? Strutting around. So I'm sure that's what's in the back of his mind. I can go in there and I can make the difference. But I think most of us, having seen the last couple of years, know that that's going to be very, very difficult. Unless the summer brings a whole sea change of signings and star players, which I don't really see that happening, not all at once. One of them's got to go. Vinny's won big at Real Madrid and Mbappe hasn't yet well I think the fact that Vinny's got one year left on his deal makes it a bit easier for him to be the one that has to go and that's the only way I see this working one of them has to go because they're not going to get on off the field and they're not getting on on the field because they both want their own ball and neither of them tracks back, neither of them is, you know, considering what the game, the majority of the best teams today are about closing the opposition down high, that high press, all of that stuff.

12:48Well, you can forget that with Vinny and Mbappe. And so straight away, Mourinho's, he's got one hand tied behind his back. So it's not working on the field. And particularly if it's not working on the field, you have to make a change. And for me, it has to be Vinny. When you take a look at the players that they might bring in or the type of player that they would need to bring in with this Real Madrid team, and we take a look at what they did fall short in this season, Macca, and it's another season without silverware for them, what are the positions that you think Real Madrid need to address?

13:22Well, I think they need to bring someone in in the centre of the park. I mean, they've had Rodrigo injured for most of the season, haven't they, which hasn't helped. But saying that, he was on the periphery anyway. He was a major player in the last couple of years. And then suddenly when Killian comes, he's gone because the three of them couldn't operate together. And then the two of them can't operate together. So they're going to need someone in the centre of the park. They're going to need someone in defence as well, I think, a real leader. Because Rudiger's getting to the end of his career.

13:51Raul Asensio's only young. Dean Housen's had a disappointing year, but will get better. They've still got three left-backs. So that has to be addressed because they brought in Fran Garcia to replace Ferran Mendy. Then they brought Alvaro Carreras in to replace Ferran Mendy and Fran Garcia. And they still went back to Ferran Mendy when he was fit to play against Manchester City, etc. So that's an area they have to address. They just have to clean up shop a little bit. They have to get rid of the ones that they're not going to rely on and invest heavily in a few of the others. But at this moment, they look lopsided on the pitch.

14:25Everybody wants to play onto the left-hand side. You know, Killian and Vinny Jr., when they play together, they hug the opposite side of the pitch. So if you're Trent Alexander-Arnold, you know, you haven't got anybody to interview. If you're Feli Valverde and he's played three different positions this year, which he hasn't been happy about, you know, that doesn't help them either. So they're severely lopsided at times. So that has to be addressed. But as Stevie rightly said, in the end, it's all about how hard you work. Get behind the ball. you close people down, you work hard to defend when you haven't got the ball and that's been lacking and if you look at the personal stats as in running stats, times on the pitch, how hard they run, how many sprints they have their personal stats are quite damning and that's something that has to be addressed, doesn't matter how good or how bad you are the minimum requirement is work rate and effort and you run and you run and you run and everything else should follow if you're in a team of you know, of the likes of Real Madrid.

15:26That's what's happened in the past with the Benzema's and the Ronaldo's and the Gareth Bale's, etc, etc. Big egos, it doesn't matter. They still work and they do the right things. Listen to the instructions of the manager. Get on well with the teammates, regardless of whether the personal friends on or off the pitch. You get on well because you've got a job to do. And that job is to cross the white line, win a game, win a trophy. And when it doesn't happen, It's massive, massive problems in Real Madrid. We've known that forever. When you're successful, you get lauders, you get treated like a god, a king.

16:00Everybody is the king of Madrid. And when you don't win anything, it's a huge problem. And when your arch rivals are dominating like they are at the moment, then that triples. So that's why it's a huge summer with the presidential elections. And then what the new president, if it is a new president, who he's going to choose and who he's going to bring in. because he's going to have to gift something to the fans. And whether that's a new manager or a rafferter...

16:30Yeah, I think I just lost Steve at the end there. Yeah. Are you still there, Maka? Yeah, you're still there. Yes, I am. Oh, yes. It was good timing because we just lost him as he was finished. It was perfect timing, but I do have one question as we wrap this one up. You've been... You know what it's like to be in a galactic dressing room at Real Madrid, Maka. would you have been happy to have this version of Mourinho come into your dressing room back then? Well, I had Vincente Del Bosque for four years. He was a Carlo Ancelotti type person, really calm. But what I would say is that when he was unceremoniously sacked when we won the league, he was treated terribly.

17:06Then a manager came in and he was gone within three months. Then another manager came in and he was gone within three months. and then Jose Camacho came in and was gone in about 20 days. If the players don't like you, they will get rid of you. And that has always been the case for 25, 30 years. And it's no different now. So it all depends whether it's a fiery Mourinho who wants to be aggressive with everybody and wants to lay down the law or whether it's just going to be this newer version of Jose Mourinho. As Craig says, this is an incredible job to have at 63 years of age when the last few years it looks as if he's been winding down to a national team job.

17:44So to go right back into the fire, it's how he approaches it. And that's going to be the box office TV. That's why I can't wait if it does happen. But you don't know whether it's going to be an absolute disaster or a rise to superstardom again. Yeah, they'll have some well-rested Spanish Real Madrid players because none of them have been called up to the Spain squad. That was announced today. and yes, not a single Real Madrid player in that squad. No surprise that Laminya Mal has been one of the big headlines and so too has the reaction of Gavi who made it.

18:31More on the Spain squad over on our website. That was Laminio's Instagram page. Did the Spanish squad not get leaked? It didn't get leaked. No, it didn't. You're right. Yeah, go check it all out. A lot more over on our website. Spain's 2026 squad confirmed.

20:11What a difference a season can make. Liverpool end in the Premier League campaign with Champions League qualification secured, but they were 24 points worse off than last season when they won the title. That drop off, the worst in the Premier League statistically. Maka is still with us. Arna Slott still the right man for you to lead Liverpool next season? Maka, or do you think it's not the problem? I think it's been part of the problem. I think there's extenuating circumstances as well. I think he'll stay on, Kaya really do. I think the people in charge of Liverpool from the sporting directors down feel as if they've really let themselves and the team down this year and they want to put it right.

20:52So I think Arna will stay on, definitely. I think he's going to have, it'll be difficult if he doesn't win the first few games, if he has a difficult start. But I absolutely see him starting the season again in August. But they've got a huge summer ahead, haven't they? We're talking about Real Madrid having a huge summer. Liverpool have got a monstrous summer ahead. Losing characters like Mo Salah and Andy Robertson particularly. I was really surprised to see him leaving. It looks as if Alisson will stay, and I'm glad about that. and then there's even mutterings that Joe Gomez might leave and even Curtis Jones which I think will be awful because Liverpool don't need to lose any more bodies if anything, they need to bring in five or six so massive, massive summer ahead for Liverpool but this season certainly was not good enough Craig?

21:42Well, I think he is lucky in the sense that he's at a club and Stevie and I have talked about this he's at a club that generally are very patient with their managers historically I mean, there's been the odd occasion they've had to sort of fire somebody. Roy Hodgson was springing to mind relatively short tenure. But I think they're generally a patient club. But as Macca said, if the first three months of next season don't go particularly well, then he's going to be back on the hot seat. There's no question about it. The summer is going to be interesting. And listen, we all thought last summer, certainly with the signings, that none of us thought we'd be having this conversation.

22:17what we thought would be sitting here now talking about them as Premier League champions because who was going to beat them with all these signings that were coming in and yeah they lost a few players but the ones that have come in have struggled Frimpong struggled Kerkes has certainly struggled Wirtz has struggled Isaac has been non-existent with injuries and whatnot and then you look at the ones that are here I mean obviously Mo Salah and Andy Robertson are gone like Mike had mentioned but Mo Salah has been much talked about obviously but he struggled. Virgil van Dijk has struggled at times.

22:51So there's a, you know, what are they going to do with the partnership with van Dijk is it's still going to be Canati because he's had a terrible season. So there's lots of players. It's not just about signing players for Liverpool. It's about the existing ones that are there playing better. I think if you look at the midfield, Sabo's lie apart. Gravenberg and McAllister were a shadow of the players they were the previous season. Van Dijk certainly wasn't anywhere near as good. Neither was Mo Salah. So there's a lot of players there that are good enough to win titles at Liverpool because they've proven it.

23:24But can they get back to something like their best? And then they can add to that. That's what Arne Slott has to be hoping for. It's about partnerships, isn't it? The partnerships in the middle of the park, the partnerships at the back. And then, of course, the full-back area. Alexander Arno's gone, so that dynamic has changed. that great football they had from the right side with Salah attacking and Alexander Arnog's, you know, his raking balls and crosses and set pieces and passing. And Andy Robertson, obviously, on the other side, going box to box, which he hasn't been able to do, you know, for 12 months or so.

23:56But they thought Kirkhaz was going to do that. Stevie, you were a huge fan of his, wasn't it? Whether it's talent or whether it's the fact he's at Liverpool and the pressure of going from Bournemouth to Liverpool is just, sinking the lad? I don't know. There's no question that when the rest of the back four aren't at their best and they're struggling, a young guy is going to struggle. You know, Semenu at Man City is a one-off. The fact that he came from Bournemouth and then just actually took another step forward to the point where he could have been player of the year, that, that, that doesn't happen very often.

24:35He's a wee bit older, isn't he? He's kind of mid-twenties. Semenu. Kervke has absolutely toiled and he was not helped by everybody else around him. And Arnish Slott, absolutely 100%, is starting from scratch. He has to start from scratch. There is nothing that this Liverpool side showed us this season that you want to keep and carry on into next year. The back line, the midfield and the forward line, it was atrocious and it was unwatchable at times. So Arnish Slott is starting from the beginning and he, 100%, has to get bodies in. and proper players. Not just filling a gap, but proper players.

25:16And of course, the worst thing for Alan Slott is it's a World Cup year. So he's not going to have a lot of time to work with the squad. The time they all come back. So, I mean, the odds against Alan Slott starting the season well are, I'll tell you, he's up against it big time. I agree with Mark. It seems like now he's going to stay. Craig said the FSG are patient and you know we can't complain about that and we did say certainly I said the fact that he did win the Premier League in his first year gives him a little bit of time but boy is he under pressure he is under pressure big time Stevie's concerns about filling those gaps the same concerns for you Macca yes yes because you know listen to the boys I think everybody agrees most I think most Liverpool fans would agree when you look at those new signings look at the players they lost too many players.

26:10We understand the financial aspect of bringing players in and letting players go, but they've probably lost too many players. The new players that have come in have not performed well. Yes, they've had a lot of bad luck this year with injuries. They had good luck last year with injuries. They've had a lot of bad luck this year and that has to be addressed. You're talking about losing. A lot of people keep talking about identity. They've lost a lot of identity in recent years in Milners and Jordan Henderson but they've lost one of the best in Andy Robertson now Salah's been there a long time and knowing the club and knowing what the players like that worries me just as much as what I see on the pitch you know the characters who run the dressing room um the people who will be able to shout at each other you know going back to Stevie's time when I was trying to get into their team they had real leaders in that squad and it's progressed from then until now and I just think once Alisson goes and once Van Dijk goes, I'm thinking to myself, you know, where's it going to come from?

27:09That's why I worry about people like Joe Gomez or Curtis Jones. I know Joe Gomez has, you know, has others injury problems. But I'd rather have him than not have him just to be around because he can play two or three different positions because Conor Bradley is injury prone. Jeremy Fringpong looks as if he doesn't know what to do. I agree with both the lads about Milos Kerk as he doesn't, you can see he's talented and energetic but he just doesn't seem to know how to play for Liverpool, it's just one way or that's it he just wants to run and run forwards and run in all strange positions so I don't know where they're going to start, I really don't they finished the season and two of their outstanding players over the last nine years have gone, Canarte is on a free contract, we think he will join, there's rumours about Alisson Van Dijk's got one year left so when you're looking into this crystal ball you're thinking oh my word you know they've got so much so much work to do I hope they can pull it off I hope there's a magic pot of money that they can go to and say right we've still got plenty of room to buy X, Y and Z because as I said they can't bring in two players they're going to need to bring in five or six really really world class players otherwise next year they won't be in the Champions League spot and that spells disaster as we all know for the big teams if you can't get the Champions League in revenue you're going to have years of struggle and Liverpool cannot have that after winning the Premier League last year and this year being a bit of a damp squib really And with all the games that are going to come their way because of the domestic and European competitions, you just have to look at Arsenal, the Premier League winners and not so much in the way they played in the second half of the season, but you look at what they did last summer, which is the point where everyone's talking about here They realised where they came up short, which was in one or two positions, but also in the bench.

Read the full transcript

29:04And they really beefed their squad up to a point where they had almost two back fours. You know, they could double up in the wide positions and they had Gabriel Jesus, when fit, Kai Havertz and Xhocarez that could play up front and Havertz could play in a couple of different positions. So they went and beefed up that squad so that when things weren't going well for certain players, they could make a change. You know, when Odegaard was injured or struggling, you know, they signed Eze, he came in and he played. When Eze wasn't playing particularly well, Odegaard played. You know, Martinelli came in, Madweki came in.

29:36They weren't always consistent, but they were bodies that were enough quality. And I think if Liverpool want to get back to winning, I think as important as the first 11, we'll be looking around at the bench and saying, right, what have we got on the bench? because nobody's winning any elite league now with just 14 players, 11 good starters and three or four decent subs and a bunch of kids. Unfortunately, you need more than that now. The problem Liverpool's got is that Arsenal did it over a period of time. They grew that squad to the point of where they've basically got two great players for every position.

30:16I mean, that's the ideal scenario. the problem Liverpool's got is they're not even close to that but they have to sign a whole load at one time that's a completely different animal than being able to quietly do it and strengthen yourself over a period of time Liverpool don't have that at their disposal they have to do it right now and that is we saw what happened last year when they made so many changes and they're going to have to make the same amount at least again how is it possibly going to work? in a short space of time. Particularly, again, because Slot's not going to have time to work with them all, even if they get them all in.

30:54So, again, he's up against it. So that Slot's sticking around by the looks of things. We do know Pep Guardiola, though, is leaving from your former team, Man City, as well, Maka. Stevie had an interesting take on the show that now Pep's gone, Man City have lost a little bit of their luster and might not be able to attract some of the bigger-name players. Would you agree with that? I think they'll attract the bigger name players just because they'll offer them the finances that will attract them to them but yes, I certainly think they've lost a little bit of luster I mean Pep was one of the finest managers around wasn't he?

31:29Whether it was at Barca or Bayern the style of play and then he's gone on to Manchester City and I know Mancini and Pellegrini were there before him but the way he operated the way he wanted to play football was infinitely better than those previous managers. You know, Heinke's won the treble at Bayern. The way Pep came in, I know he never achieved the treble at Bayern, but the way he played football, he lifted them, elevated them to a better style of football. So I think they will lose a little bit of lust. They have to. And it'll be interesting to see who they bring in. I think the transition should be fairly comfortable with the hierarchy they have in Manchester City.

32:06I don't think a lot will change, but they have to change slightly on the pitch. and of course losing Bernardo Silva, losing John Stones, again, real good characters around the ground who know what it's like, who know the area, who've been there for a long time, particularly Stonesy, of course, being English. I think that will hinder them slightly, but what they will do, they'll go out and make a statement, I believe, in the transfer market to show that, you know, nothing has changed here. We're just going to carry on moving forward. They brought in Hugo Vianna as the sporting director. I think already he'll be making an eyeing up people to come in.

32:44You know, bringing Mark Gahey and Semenya in in January was great business, wasn't it, for them? Because, you know, they've slotted into the team straight away. And again, talking about Liverpool, why didn't Liverpool get attracted to them, you know, even last summer when they were splashing the cash? So I think it will affect Manchester City, but I don't think it will affect them so much. Like with City when we lost Jurgen Klopp, it's a pity Pep was gone because the Premier League has lost a real, real great manager. And we'll be sadder for it. But 10 years in the job, I think everybody appreciates he's done incredibly well to stay that long.

33:24City's still got the stardust, still got the attractiveness to get these players in. I don't think there's any doubt that the money and the manager are important. both sort of go hand in hand some players maybe it's just the money but there's no doubt Guardiola was a lure as well for players because of everything that Maka talked about the big question, look, sometimes the problem is that the dominoes start falling when key players, not like Bernardo Silva's been leaving for a little while and he deserves to be able to make that choice and John Stones is obviously he's such a cultured player, John Stones, but he's at that age, he's had his injury problems and he's going with England in the summer I think the problem is if the likes of Haaland and Rodri get itchy feet for whatever reason, then that's when the dominoes could start falling.

34:12But that's not happening just yet. The big question, I think, for City is what's the desire within the dressing room to go and be that team again that were, you know, the best in the country for quite some considerable time. Whoever the manager is, and if these players have got the appetite for that and they sign well in the summer and I believe Maresca is the favourite at the moment for the job. Obviously he's been at City before working there but you know not as a manager clearly it's a completely different ball game. But yeah I think there's enough seniority within that dressing room if they sign well to go and challenge again.

34:50I mean Macca mentioned Gay was a good signing, Kusinov really grew into the season after a horrible start for the young guy so a lot of positives but still some areas they need to improve i mean i'd rather not see nico o'reilly playing left back most of the time i think he's better than that but ultimately they signed art neri in the summer and i don't know why the hell they signed him because you know he can't defend and that's part of the issue in that area so there's some things that city are going to have to address obviously but they're not going to go away unless of course they do go away, which is these charges that are hanging over them, so we don't and nobody knows what the outcome of that is nobody if you're going to Man City as a player, you'd want some clarification about what that scenario is, because we don't know, is it just points, is it just fines or is it a relegation and I'm not putting fuel in the fire here, all those things are on the table, which is taking so long in the legal sense that we don't know what's happening.

35:53So if we don't know, what about players going into the club from a Bayern or a Real Madrid or somewhere in England? They have to be asking that question. What's the scenario here going forward? And do I get a clause in my contract that if X, Y or Z happens, I can get out? That's where kind of City are at the moment. Yeah, given that the England squad has been mentioned and while we've got you here, Mac, are you OK with Cole Palmer and Phil Foden not going? I'd rather them be there, to be honest. I'd rather one of the wild cards to be there. Like I'd rather see Trent Alexander there when I saw the list of names.

36:29But every four years, we have this conversation where somebody misses out. Has their form been good enough? Probably not. Cole Palmer hasn't had the great season he has compared with others. Phil Foden probably hasn't had as much time on the pitch as other people to be chosen. So I can see the circumstances around Thomas Tuchel's appointment with all the players. But I'd rather one of them be there. I think a Cole Palmer on your bench or a Trent Alexander-Arnold on the bench is better than some of the names I did see, to be very honest. Because I want my teams to go out and play football and try and beat the teams by out-footballing them.

37:11And if anything, I think Thomas Tuchel has probably played a little bit safer with some of those names there. But we'll have this conversation every four years. People will disagree with me and they can disagree with me about who you want on that plane going over to the States. Well, you've got Gibbs White as well, who really threw his hat in the ring. And I agree with Alexander-Arnold. And the reason is, look, Tuchel doesn't like him, clearly. And we know defensively he has problems. But in games that are tight, that are very pedestrian, as a lot of international games can be, you need people that are going to make a difference.

37:49Even if it's 20 minutes, half an hour off the bench for Alexander to come on and whip some brilliant inner set piece or a 60-yard raking ball. And it's the same with Palmer, Foden and Gibbs-White. They're match changers, match winners. Even off the bench for a bit, to do some a little bit special, even out of form. The question would be, does he have enough with Eze and one or two others to do that? I think the one thing we know with this squad, he's laid it on the line, hasn't he? He's not just taken who everybody thought he would take. He's laid it on the line that this is the way he's going to do it.

38:21So it's either going to be pretty decent or it's going to be a spectacular failure. And if it is a spectacular failure, he's going to get dragged through the coals for this squad selection. So he needs this tickle. Of course, you always need to go and play well. But if you take all the star players and it doesn't go well, the blame game will be getting shared a little bit. The manager will get most of it, but a lot of these big-time Charlies will get it as well. When you leave a lot of them out, and almost every Tom, Dick and Harry is looking at the squad and going, wow, that's a bit left field.

38:57So is that one, so is that one. You need to make sure your team performs. Otherwise, he's going to get smashed. There's a lack of characters in that squad, isn't there? So you're saying it's not coming home? I don't... It's just strange, I mean... Number two, I don't think so. I played in a team at Sheffield Wednesday that was full of really good guys. Everybody worked hard, everybody was a good soldier, you know, never any trouble. But you know, we didn't win enough games because of that. You need something different. And it seems to me that... What's the difference make us? they just all seem to be good guys that are solid and they're going to play for the team they're going to work hard and yes you want your managers to be strong and say I'm doing it this way but at the end of the day is it the right way?

39:46I'm not so sure he's got the right squad I'm just not I'm not going forward Jordan Henderson's been a great professional there's no change there's not even a debate about that it's a bit like James Milner isn't it the guy was out of the world what a professional and Henderson's the same but really a 20-26 World Cup with a guy who struggled to get in the side at Brentford because of his age and is this where England are the headlines in the paper that Harry Maguire never made the World Cup if that's what England's issue is they are not going to do anything decent at this World Cup so the question will be does he have enough match winners or is he just reliant on 61 goals Harry Kane from Bayern Munich who was brilliant that's going to be the key question but listen by the looks of Thomas Tuchel he seems like the cat that's got the cream in naming this squad so that's what he gets paid the big bucks for and we'll find out how it works out and these days we'll be talking about it all summer thank you Maka so much for being with us we look forward to seeing more of you this summer as we cover the World Cup here on ESPN ESPN FC still will be available every single day on the lead up to the World Cup so make sure to be with us on ESPN Plus If you've shopped online, chances are you've bought from a business powered by Shopify.

Both Roma and Como qualifying for the Champions League. Here is the Como coach, Sesk Bab-Bragas, speaking to his team after the game.

43:08One second. It's the last circle of the season. I told you the day before Parma. We win the two games. We are in the Champions League. I don't know why I told you I had a feeling. I always get my responses by feeling but guys this is all up to you it's all thanks to every one of you we try to help you we try to give you certain solutions you are the reason that this is beautiful I thank you for all my life all my life because this would be probably the best group I will ever coach in my future I have no doubts you will be remembered forever now we can say it and more. And that's it, guys. Enjoy a f***ing good holidays.

43:50Enjoy a big party. You deserve everything. Who else to the World Cup? All the best. And what are we playing next year? Stambo! What are we playing next year? Stambo! What are we playing next year? Stambo! Stambo! Stambo! Stambo! Stambo! That are lovely stuff. Gabriele Marcotti joining us now to talk a little bit more about this. We'll start with the positives here. We'll start with Como. How impressive a job has Cesc done there, Gab? Hugely impressive. Seven years ago, of course, Como were an amateur side. He's been there four years. You talk about programming, you talk about planning. People will point to the money that Como have spent, and they have spent a lot of money.

44:33But you know what? They only have the 10th highest wage bill in Serie A, and most of that goes to Alvaro Morata, who probably doesn't contribute as much as you'd expect. Guys like Nico Pass, of course, get the headlines. I I think he's a top 10 attacking midfielder in the world right now. So exciting. But it goes far beyond that. It goes to Baturina. It goes to Assangeau. It goes to Duvicas this season. And I'll tell you what. People think Sass. They think attacking football. Pretty football. Yeah, that's all great. They scored the second most goals in Serie A this season. They also had the best defence at the same time.

45:06So he's really been transformative this season. Okay, Nadim wants Cesc Fabregas as the new Manchester City coach. So let us know, Gab. Is he actually going to stay, Cesc Fabregas, at Como? I don't know. I would have thought Nadim would be pretty familiar with Manchester City and could walk right in there since they like him so much. They could tell him who the next City coach is. Pretty sure it's going to be Ains Omareska and not Cesc Fabregas. But I'll tell you what, a lot of people want Cesc Fabregas. I think he's going to stick around, give it a go in the Champions League. You know, he's a guy who, I mean, I first met him when he was 19 years old.

45:52So, who I've known him for a long time. He knows he's young for a coach. He wants to bide his time. He wants to do something. He wants to keep learning and growing. He knows he's not the finished article at all. So, you know, will he stick around there long term? I don't think so, but will he be there at least one more season? I have a hunch that he will. Before we move on to the disasters that happened on the final day, I wanted to know what you two thought of saying, go out there, go and have a party, go and enjoy it. Why shouldn't they? Hold on. You say that right up our street as if we're not normal.

46:29But you are complaining sometimes, and you can see why when some of the teams, you're saying that maybe we're not seeing that as much, we're not seeing some of that these days. So to hear that, I thought that would make you smile. Well, it did. Listen, we wouldn't need the manager to tell us to go and party. No, you definitely would not. Two teams who should not be partying right now are two of the biggest teams in the Serie A who failed to make the Champions League. That's Milan and Juventus. Let's start with Milan because there have already been changes happening here since this happened. Gab, tell us more.

47:06Well, metaphorically, it's a Monday Milan massacre. You look at this. Sporting director Iglitare, gone. Technical director Geoffrey Moncada, gone. CEO Giorgio Furlani, gone. And, of course, Max Allegri, gone. So the owner, Jerry Cardinale, of course, the American businessman, represents Redbird. He's come out and he said, you know, no, we're going to start over. This season was a failure. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the only guy he's keeping around. But remember, Zlatan officially doesn't work for Milan. He's an advisor to the Redbird Fund who invested a whole bunch of different things. So within a week, they hope to have their new coach and the new CEO in place a week to 10 days.

47:56I don't know. I don't know what to think about this, Kay, because he also said, oh, things are going great. and then we had a bad couple months of the season when we started losing all these games. Well, the reason I have an issue with this is you cannot decide to keep or sack a manager based on missing out on the Champions League by a point or two points. It just doesn't make any sense. The reality is Milan were bad all season. It doesn't matter that they were second or whatever they were, you know, as late recently as January or February. It makes no difference. They were still playing bad football.

48:33Allegri still wasn't building anything at all. I've said until I was blue in the face. You can't just look at results because otherwise, guess what? It's like being the tallest of Snow White's seven dwarfs. And that's where Milan were under Allegri when he thought everything was going so well. So now all of a sudden, you miss out on Champions League by a point, and then you decide, ah, I'm going to go and fire everybody. You probably should have fired most of these guys before. You probably shouldn't have set up the situation. You shouldn't have said we're going to base the season on Luka freaking Modric, who's 40 years old.

49:05And look, Modric was fine, but obviously nothing long term there. Just as Adrian Rabiot, who I imagine will move on since he's, you know, basically Allegri's adopted son. Maybe Magic Mike Magnan as well. The sad thing for Milan fans is that four years ago, they won Serie A under Stefano Pioli. they had the youngest team in the entire league and they showed that you can win with kids you can win with smart signings with value signings uh and then all of a sudden i think right around the time actually that they sacked fonseca they decided to go off on this other direction let's build a team from scratch uh all of a sudden let's bring in all these veterans you know because nicholas full krug will put us over the top and and you saw what happened i hope for me the sake of Milan fans that there's been lessons learned.

49:55Okay. The other team, of course, is Juventus. Will we be seeing some big changes there, Gab? We might. That's TBD in the next 24 hours. I don't know that, to be honest, I don't know that there should be. Let me tell you what the difference between Juve and Milan is. Obviously, they made the wrong choice at the start of the season. Then they bring in Spaletti, under Spaletti. they actually grind out results. And they actually, at times, generally play reasonably well. They certainly are much more proactive, have much more of an identity than Milan do. Obviously, their summer signings didn't work out, whether it's Jonathan David or Lois Openda.

50:40But I think they were trending in the right direction. The reason they didn't qualify is they lost at home to Fiorentina on the second to the last day of the season. so they no longer control their destiny. That was a game that I think they were actually a little bit unlucky in, if you look at it in terms of chances created versus chances conceded. And then in the end against Torino, it really, frankly, didn't matter at that point. I think it would be a mistake to let Spalletti go. I think the Fabregas experience taught us anything, is that, hey, if you give a project some time, if you look for markers that you're trending in the right direction, then you might actually get somewhere.

51:18So I would imagine Spalletti is going to stick around. He should stick around. The trouble for Juventus compared to Milan in terms of, you know, investing money in the squad, turning things around, is that Milan have been a break even or profitable in the last three, four years. That is one thing that I think you can give them and the former chief executive Giorgio Furlani credit for. Juventus are still trying to work their way out of this massive hole of debt that was racked up by the previous administration when they were spending money left, right and centre and signing Cristiano Ronaldo and whatnot.

51:53That's going to take a lot longer to turn around. So I think Spalletti is going to have to work with what he has, maybe one or two signings. But I would expect him to certainly be competitive for a top four finish next season. OK, there'll be a lot more talk about the Serie A and how it all went down on the final day on the Gab and Jules show. That's dropped wherever you do get your podcasts. 53:57All right, Extra Time is coming up next. Can I have a question about Mexican football, please? A few questions coming. None of them have got Mexican football. Stick around, it's on the way next.

54:11Hello and welcome into the latest edition of Extra Time. Craig and Stevie are here in the studio. Gab Marcotti is joining us as well. All right, first question. Given that Eketike is unavailable until early next year and Salah just played his last game, Should Liverpool go after Jared Bowen this summer, would he fit into this team? Yes, absolutely he would fit in. I mean, saying yesterday, when you're playing in a team as poor as West Ham have been this season, but yet you still turn off every game and not only give your best, but actually be the difference maker whenever it came along. So yeah, Jared Bowen absolutely, in my opinion, would fit into Liverpool.

54:53Depends what age is he? I ask. Gab, do you know what age he is? 29 we've just been told. I think he's 29. We've just been told he's 29. Yeah, I was looking it up but Stevie answered the question rather sharply. I think you have to take that into consideration as well because Salah's age and he was leaving Van Dijk's age. Unfortunately they're in a position where they're going to have to maybe take a chance on something like that. I suppose he might not be. I suppose in terms of, you know, they've now been relegated. I don't know what his contract is all about in terms of clauses, but I wouldn't imagine he'd be super expensive, Gab.

55:32He's come out and he said that he wants to stay. Now, obviously, in situations like this, he may want to stay. The club might say, we've spent a lot of money, we need to recoup some so we can, you know, try to get back with bigger players. So it'll be entirely, I'd expect, down to him. What I can say is on a bad team, he's been exceptional, not just this season, but the last couple of seasons. But I think part of it is also at that age, you're not going to get any resale value if you're Liverpool. Do you want to put your money there when you might have a different manager a year from now? and also who's making these decisions are Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes sticking around who's going to go out and talk to you know Jerry Bowen you got to get your house in order there first I think Craig two years ago six Premier League clubs scored more than 75 goals only one team did so this season and last and it was City does this dropping goals from bigger teams show the greater resilience of smaller teams making the league more competitive

56:45I don't see the Premier League as some sort of defensive masterclass. No. I don't think it's been a particularly strong Premier League, to be honest. Or entertaining. So I don't know why the drop-off is off the top of my head. I couldn't tell you the rhymes of reason. But I don't think it's because all of a sudden the Premier League's turned into Italian football of the 80s when they could keep a clean sheet at will. Because they had really good defenders and most teams now were super organised. I don't know, Stevie. I think teams are not looking to go forward as quickly as they used to. And so that means that teams can get players behind the ball, which means it's going to be hard to score goals.

57:35and then even when you do get it forward to the edge of the box it ends up back in the halfway line and it feels like it's just been getting worse and worse as the years go on so the fact that teams seem to be more concerned about keeping the ball than actually maybe taking a chance and trying to score a goal maybe that's the reason Cam? Alright so Jules and I discussed this this very topic quite a bit I think it's a combination of factors. One is, as far as the 75 goals thing is concerned, you don't have the year that a couple years ago when it was Liverpool getting 98 points and City getting 99 or whatever it was.

58:20you don't necessarily have the dominant big clubs who will score more goals at the top. If you look at the big six, you can objectively say that Spurs, Chelsea, and frankly Liverpool underachieved this season. So I think, and those are the teams that you expect, if they're near the top, they're not just going to look to win games, they're going to look to perhaps score more goals. I think the other big factor, one is players in general are more athletic and cover more ground in the Premier League than they did five or ten years ago. And I also think, I'm going to trick this back to you guys, and don't worry, nobody's feelings will be hurt.

59:05If I were to ask you, how many bad managers have we seen in the Premier League this year? and then you look back to see who was managing in the Premier League five or ten years ago, I think the level of manager in the Premier League is a lot higher than it was. And certainly as far as being destructive, whether you choose to be destructive with a high press, whether you choose to go and park the bus, it's just harder to go and run up the score. Yeah, big teams will still beat smaller teams, but they may score late. it's a lot more physically draining than it was. I think all these factors tend to combine.

59:49Gab, Manchester United is linked with Atalanta's Edison. What can you tell us about him? Well, I can tell nobody wants to name who they think is a bad manager in the Premier League. Cricket's over here. I don't think Scott Parker is very good. Nice guy, well-dressed, but I don't think he's on a par with, I think he's sub-par compared to the Premier League average. But anyway, Edison had a monster season two years ago when I thought he was among the top two-way midfielders in Europe. This season, he's also had some injuries. Hasn't necessarily been on that same level. What I would caution with him, off the top of my head, I think he's sort of 26, 27.

1:00:30You're not getting a guy with a huge upside. And when you look at sort of the age profile of this United team and, you know, you've got Mbumo, you've got Cunha right around that age. You've got Bruda Fernandes who's right around that age. You might want to go for somebody potentially younger if you can. If he's at the level that he was two years ago, no, he's phenomenal. And, you know, he's a genuine, I would say, all-rounder who puts in the hard yards defensively, who has the creativity, who will get forward and score goals as well. I'm just not sure that the Edison of two years ago, that he's going to be back this season.

1:01:09Craig, who do you think should be manager of the year between Arsenal's Arteta and Sunderland's Libris?

1:01:20Well, I mean, there's no right and wrong answer really. But, Libris has been brilliant, of course he has, but Arteta's won the league and may win the Champions League. So, I mean, it's like having the player of the year halfway through the season, isn't it? I mean, the season isn't over for Arsenal. You know. Apples and oranges, budget at once. I mean, it's like... Yeah. Both have done a great job. I don't care. Honestly, I get pretty off with these kind of things. If Arteta wins the Champions League, you have to give it to Arteta. And if he doesn't?

1:02:04Yeah, I think I'd still give it to Arteta. Look at the end of the day, had Arteta not won the Premier League, he might have lost his job.

1:02:16Sunderland, all Sunderland had to do and all Le Brie had to do was finish what? 17th? But it just so happens that they've actually won a lot more games than we thought they would. but the pressure has been on Arteta all season so I would give it to Arteta. Gab?

1:02:38You can't go wrong with either choice, I would throw in a third. Andoni Raola, when you consider somebody who loses three quarters of his starting defence in the summer and then loses arguably his best player in January And then the team actually gets better without Antoine Semenyo and they take it down to the wire for a spot in the Champions League. I think that's absolutely tremendous and for me it's on a par with Libri and Arteta. Okay, you may discuss Fergie vs Pep but overall neither can compare to Don Carlo. It's harder to win in different leagues than to stay at one club. Is it? I'm not getting involved in any Guardiola, Ancelotti, Sir Alex Ferguson debates.

1:03:33It's for online morons. Sorry about that. Dad, Carlos is your friend. Love him. I'm the biggest Carlo Ancelotti fan here. What I would say is that, first of all, Ferguson and Pep also won in different leagues. Yeah, exactly. But the one thing I would add is that Ferguson's done something, which Pep's never done, and which Ancelotti's never done. He won European silverware with Aberdeen, the last team not named Celtic and Rangers to go and win in Scotland, and then he does it again in Europe before he ever got to Manchester United. That, to me, is an achievement because, you know, let's say Ancelotti and Guardiola and Fergie United, they had tremendous players, they had tremendous resources.

1:04:30That's a different skill set. They did very well with that. I would love to see what can these guys do with lesser teams. I don't know what Pep's plans are. He's always said that if he ever were to come to manage in Italy, he'd go and return to Brescia and coach them. They're in the playoffs for promotion to Serie B. maybe that's what he wants to do. I'd love to see one guy saying, you know what, am I actually good or do I just have really good players? Can I work with mediocre guys? I'd love to see one of these guys saying, you know what, I'm going to give it a go. I'm going to go and manage in the second division somewhere with a small budget and I'm really going to test myself and challenge myself.

1:05:08But you know what? I ain't holding my breath. Ain't going to happen. And, you know, he did that. I'm not, I wouldn't, I'm not interested in the... Well, he did that before he went, Sorry, sorry. Fergie did that before he was Fergie. Fergie did that on the way up. But I'd love to see a guy, after they've been successful, go back and do that. That Aberdeen side that Ferguson put together with some great players that we all, Stevie and I know, winning that European trophy, they beat Real Madrid. But that was a time, and they ousted Celtic and Rangers as the dominant force in Scottish football. And that was back then, because people say now Scottish football and it's not the best these days but back then it was it was it was very competitive because you had done the United under Jim McLean were going to the Camp Nou and beating Barcelona I mean they wouldn't even get a touch of the ball now they went to the the Camp Nou so you know that was it wasn't it was back in the day when actually Scottish football was a really good standard and yet he built a side that was the top of the tree and then he went south and took him a while and came close to it going wrong but and rebuilt down there but there's not there's no rights and wrong answers here yeah with these managers you know I mean it's like there's no right and there's no wrong all right no wrong but that is the end of extra time thank you that is right sending in your questions it is right we are done we'll be back tomorrow to do the same again
