0:34Kay Murray:Welcome in to the latest edition of ESPN SC. I'm Dan Thomas, joined by Shaka Hissop and Stevie Nika. We'll kick things off in the Premier League. The early game on Saturday saw Manchester United take on Spurs. This was a good contest for about 20 minutes, but then Romero gets a straight red card. The Spurs captain sent off, and that then dictated really the narrative for the rest of the game. Manchester United in control in Buemo, and Fernandes getting the goals that see them win by two goals to nil. But all the talk was obviously about that red for Romero. Here is the Spurs coach Thomas Frank.
1:07Thomas Frank, If you look at how many red cards he has had, it's not like he had that
1:12Kay Murray:many throughout his career. You play with passion and you play with aggression and there's a fine line when you do that. What's got the most in the Premier League since he arrived at the club? At the club? Yeah, but not in Premier League. Off Premier League players, are they? Off Premier League players? OK. I didn't know that. Oh, no. Oh, boy. You can't make it up. Stupid facts. Yeah. It was good so well. Confirming Romero has had more red cards than any other Premier League player over the last five seasons. Don Hutchinson joins us. Steve, I want to start with that comment, though, from Thomas Frank.
1:51Kay Murray:Obviously, he's trying to defend his player. He can't be that ignorant that he doesn't know that Romero's got a record, has he?
2:01Kay Murray:Well, well, yeah, he must be. Why would he say it? If he actually knew that, listen, you know that the fact that was probably one of the first questions, if not the first question he got, and he must have known. And if he didn't think that was coming, then the person, the press officer that takes him in there has to prep him and get him ready for these sorts of things. That's his job. No, it's also his job to know. but I can't imagine he does know I reckon if we asked everyone yesterday who's been sent off more than any other player Romero's going to be very much in that conversation well he would have been but he doesn't know that it is ignorance he doesn't know and he wouldn't have said it I can assure you because they're just waiting for him to say it I mean as soon as that came out of his mouth they're all going oh you're a beauty I've got the back page ready tomorrow so yeah I mean you couldn't make you couldn't make it up Romero getting sent off after what we said yesterday And you couldn't make that up, him turning around and saying that.
2:59Kay Murray:Oh, my goodness. In Thomas Frank's defence, it's not really his. He doesn't need to know. As manager of Brentford, he doesn't know or care what Christian Romero is doing. He kind of knows and cares what he's been doing this season. While he's had one red card already this season, the wider history to his career, I don't think he needs to pay much attention to. but all that being said he's got to know that christian romero is this type of player he said it uh hinted towards it passionate aggressive and you have to as a manager know that that can sometimes spill out even if you don't know his his his recent record and and how to feed off of that now you just have to look up at the other end of the pitch one of romero's countrymen in Lissandro Martinez, and you can use the exact same descriptors, passionate, aggressive, but without anywhere near the record of Christian Romero.
3:56Kay Murray:As a matter of fact, for all Lissandro Martinez's feelings, which we've discussed, he is as important a defender for Manchester United as there is. Because of that passion, because of that aggression that Manchester United need and lack otherwise. So for Romero, and there's a far broader discussion to have, given all that he said that we've been discussing, this is just plain, downright stupid from him. Can we just say, we sat here last night, and you asked me a question about how the... because you said he was going to get punished behind doors, right? Going to keep it in-house, all the usual nonsense.
4:35Kay Murray:And we were talking about is it going to be stern? What kind of punishment is it going to be? And I I said he couldn't drop him because he needs him. Yes. We found out today that it was Mr. Meek and Mild from Thomas Frank. Right. Thomas Frank didn't know what to do. And whatever he did do, he got it 100 % wrong. And you know he didn't gut him out. You know he didn't give him loads. Because had he done that, he would have come into his press conference and regardless of the question, it would have been, this is on Romero. This guy, because he cost him the game. At the time, there was nothing between the two sides.
5:12Kay Murray:It was a solid game. Both sides were as good as each other, and he cost them the game. And what he should have said was, you know what, he got sent off at Liverpool a few weeks ago. Today, there's no excuse. He's our captain. This was the perfect opportunity for Thomas Frank to actually show some strength because nobody was saying they won. No, exactly. I understand the discussion, and no discussion you all had here yesterday. Thursday, I said I had no problem with Romero's head. I had no problem with Thomas Frank's response to it. That being said, as much as I sit here and defend, and I said on Thursday, I don't understand why players feel the need to go on social media to say whatever it is they have to say.
5:54Kay Murray:But he said it, and I have no issue with it. What you cannot do less than 30 minutes of football later is what Romero did. And he knew exactly what he was doing. He knew exactly what he was doing. There is no defending it. So you can criticize the club hierarchy. In Spurs' case, I think it's well justified. You can point to how small this squad is. And I know Craig spoke about the injuries yesterday. You can make all those arguments and be justified. And people like me will come out and defend you in saying that. What you cannot do is that less than 30 minutes of football later. This is down to Romero.
6:38Kay Murray:This has gotten, for me, this has got nothing to do with Thomas Frank. This is down to Romero, a captain and the most idiotic of responses you could hope for. He left his team in the lurch for 60 minutes. He's got another, what, 360 to go with it. After you talk about we're in this together and we're going to get ourselves out of it. That's how you get yourselves out of it, by you shirking your responsibility. This wasn't an accidental red card with a flailing arm or something that you can defend. This was just downright awful from Romero. Good quick math chat. What? Four games, four times 90.
7:18Kay Murray:Well, you know, my rocket's Santa. I know, indeed. From one extreme to the other, Don.
7:28Kay Murray:Don, what's it like in the dressing room when your captain or someone or your teammate does something so, as Steve said, idiotic?
7:36Ale Moreno:Well, I've done it six times. I've been red-guarded six times, and it's an awful feeling. I just don't get the feeling there's any remorse there with Romero. He won't be at Spurs next year. They'll sell him to Atletico Madrid. He won't be there. He's a liability. Listening to the lads chat there, I think they more or less nailed it, and I think Stevie nailed it on last night's show. It's a horrible look, I think, for Thomas Frank because it doesn't paint the picture like he's in charge. If you go back to when Mo Salah had his spat and he's outburst against Arnaz Slott and Liverpool. Liverpool then went to San Siro when they played Inter Milan and he got dropped from the team.
8:12Ale Moreno:So that's a manager putting his foot down saying, no, no, no, I'm the leader here. I'm in charge here. It doesn't matter who you are and how good you've been for Liverpool. You will not be travelling with the squad. After what Romero said, I think Thomas Frank should have shown a little bit more backbone, if I'm honest, and dropped him from the squad because now he's going to be missing for four games. He's a liability. From the player's point of view, as in his teammates, they'll be like, they won't think he's a liability. They'll think he's the captain. They'll think it was a one-off, which is not.
8:44Ale Moreno:And they'll back him because that's what players do. That's what we do in dressing rooms. And that's how we look after each other. But I think even Tottenham's hierarchy now, I've got to have a look and have the conversation and think this guy's not going to be around here. We can't carry him.
8:58Kay Murray:United, lovely jubbly, meanwhile. Yeah. Four in a row, not much to talk about in that sense. And they'll be happy about it. And to be fair, not to bring this back to Romero, it should have been. I thought Spurs started the game really well. And I feel that Spurs have been playing better than maybe their results. I've shown, I'm thinking of the 2-2 against Manchester City where I thought, again, Spurs played really well, started this game really well, and it looked like it could cause Manchester United a problem. But once Spurs go down to 10 men, with the greatest respect, Manchester United just made this look easy.
9:33Kay Murray:They really, really did. And I know it's 10 men. I know they're at home. But they really did make this look easy. The opening goal from the set piece, again, just kind of speaks to the difference that Michael Carrick is making on the sidelines. And a confidence that this team is playing with. The scoreline will show, too. Truth is, it could have been a whole lot more. Manchester United were just that dominant against the undermanned Spurs. Anything to add, Stevie? No. Don? Don? Yeah. Job done. There we go. Perfect. That's easy enough. I like things my way. My coffee, my schedule, and my treatment.

12:01Kay Murray:Arsenal extending their lead at the top of the table. A very professional performance against Sunderland. Zubmendi would score just before the break. And then a couple of goals for Xhokares coming off the bench to make it Arsenal 3, Sunderland 0. Don, I heard your dulcet tones on this game as I was watching. Arsenal, really good.
12:22Ale Moreno:Do you know what? I thought it was a really good game of football. I enjoyed it. I thought Sunderland went there and they went man for man and they got in their faces and tried to stop them playing. I thought Broby led the run really well for them. I thought Trostor was easily the best player on the pitch. The first goal, high-level football IQ, the way he sucked two Sunderland players over towards him. Then the Zubimendi finished. Then in the end, the scoreline flattered Arsenal a little bit. I thought three was a tad harsh, but I think you nailed it in your assessment there, Dan. They were professional.
12:49Ale Moreno:They got the job done. They played football when they earned the right to play. They go nine clear. 90-10 in their favour, I stand by it and it was a fixture in a game where if you remember at the Stadium of Light Sunderland beat them up a little bit and it was a 2-2 draw and Sunderland were quite aggressive they tried the same tactics today, Arsenal were just too good
13:07Kay Murray:What was striking as well, obviously no sacker in this game no headline, no stress, no problem compared to where we were this time last year where he got injured and we thought, what are Arsenal going to do? This was such an Arsenal performance wasn't it? I mean, they gave nothing away. Broby tried to fight with the two centre-backs and came off second best. It wasn't exactly scintillating soccer, was it? But they won 3-0. I mean, it was just an Arsenal performance, is what it is. It most certainly works. Don, you look at this, and I suppose the question that comes out of it is who is the best player to play up front for Arsenal, given that he's got three options in theory now.
13:49Kay Murray:Haverso playing in midfield today. Jesus, Jokeres or indeed the German?
13:55Ale Moreno:I think it's the German. I think it's Kai Havertz. I think it's one of them, you know. I think we sometimes get a little bit bogged down with best 11s. I don't honestly think Miguel Arteta thinks he's got a best 11. The players that come on, they've got two players for every position. They're strong. You know, you look at the forward line. It might be a case of you play Jesus at Leeds where it's a little bit, you know, or Jokeres where you might need a physical centre forward or you might need movement off Jesus. If you're playing against a low block, you might want Havertz because technically he's very good.
14:26Ale Moreno:As you saw today in the first couple of minutes, he had a chance in the air, which he should have done better of. But I honestly think Mikhail Arteta can just look at the opposition, not so much look at his personnel and think, right, who's my best player? It's who's best to play against the opposition and three fantastic choices.
14:42Kay Murray:Go on, Shane. No, I'm agreeing with it that it could be anybody three. I think right now, maybe Havericks is the first choice, but Don kind of mentioned the first game of the Stadium of Light, how physical Sunderland were. You saw that again for large players this one. And as a result, I wonder if that was the thinking behind dropping Havericks back into midfield. Just to give that physicality alongside Zubimendi and then leave Gabriel Jesus to kind of run in between center backs as he could. But on another day when it isn't as physical a team, maybe you play Havertz up front and you change your midfield up accordingly.
15:21It really is a good option for Arteta to have in terms of how you change
15:27Kay Murray:not just your front line, but how maybe you bolt to the physicality of the midfield as need be. But right now, Stevie kind of jokingly suggested, I think Giorgores is going to come off the bench more times than not. I've got a question now. Go on, Stevie. Do you want three players that, on the face of it and on paper, well, if we're playing against this team, we can play him, and if we're playing against them, we can play... So that all sounds really positive. But the fact is, is that the reason they bought Jocker is, is because they didn't trust Havertz. They didn't trust Jesus. But now we're talking in terms of how it's great that you've got three centre-forwards, but the truth is, you don't know who your best centre-forward is, and that's not good.
16:11Kay Murray:I don't think that's a good thing If you're having this discussion at the end of August I think that is a point That you think of longer term But end of January into February With a nine point lead as it stands right now It's a luxury that Arteta can afford It's not ideal Because you don't have a saying it forward Your career just simply hasn't been good But you have a nine point lead So therefore It feels a whole lot different I'm not I'm not being critical Well I guess I am being critical I'm just saying, though, that sometimes we can mix something into what it maybe isn't. Because at the end of the day, you can't argue that he bought Jokeres because he didn't want the other two.
16:54Kay Murray:So, I'm just saying, I think as a coach, I would prefer to have my number nine. I know who it is. I can trust him. He's going to get the goals. Don't make the point that there's too much fuss about your first choice 11. It's about the squad and it's about the team. Dan, it's a personal opinion. If I'm the coach, I would rather have my centre forward and two others who, if I need, I can either give the guy a rest or if he gets injured, I can bring them in. Well, you're nine points here at the top of the table. That's the important thing. I'm just making a point. You haven't dropped a point in the Champions League.
17:27Kay Murray:You're doing quite well. I'm just making a point. I don't know why you've got to find a negative. I'm just making a point. You just hear the ass down. If you want to go the negative way, then, you've got three centre forwards. You don't want to. How about that? Keep that one. I wasn't realistic. I just get aggressive in my ear. Both Havertz and Jesus were injured, weren't it? So forced the hand that Chalker has had to play every game. What has he told you before? I'm just lifting up the point that Don made. Because when you were shouting, Don was making a valid point. Sorry, Don. You don't know what's happening.
18:01Kay Murray:That's all right. Sorry, Don. And let's go to Molineux.
18:03Ale Moreno:I mean, only Stevie. Sorry, Don. Only Stevie can find a negative and Arsenal being nine points clear. I know, it's incredible. Just cover an old base.

19:08Kay Murray:Wolves very much not helping their own cause. So, Rosinha, another win as Chelsea bagged three points. A 3-1 win. Chelsea went there, did the job. But if you're a Wolves fan, you've got to be so frustrated. We talked about the first penalty. The second one, Don, what's he doing?
19:27Ale Moreno:I've got nothing for you, Dan. It's absolutely crazy. I mean, Stevie posed the question there, which one is worse? I mean, they're both bad. But the second one is terrible. It's like Mosquera's never played the game before. It's like Mosquera's thinking, I'm playing 15 years ago without VAR in a physical game, and I'm so lazy, I can't be bothered to run back and track Jab Pedro. So what I'll do is I'll push him in the back inside the 18-yard box. I mean, where do you leave the referee? What do you want the referee to do? It's a nailed-on pen, so if you're the Wolves players, even when you come in at half-time or full-time, I probably wouldn't even have a word with Mosquera because it's just ridiculous.
20:09Ale Moreno:But I'd say to Matt Docherty, I'd say, what are you doing? Because you started it all. What are you doing giving a silly penalty away? Like, I mean, there's no wonder they're going down. I mean, well, they've gone. I mean, it's just, it's crazy when you watch it.
20:23Kay Murray:As a coach, what are you saying to Mosquera, Stevie, if anything? Is that... Nothing. Just... Well, again, you've got to find somebody else. That's it. You've turned the page on him. That's panic. Right. Somebody does that. They're not quite... They don't see the picture. They're not sure what to do. They panic and he shoves them. You don't need somebody playing in your back lane doing that. You've got to move them on. It's simple as that. Wait, breaking news. This isn't true, is it, Don? You don't think the goalkeeper kick is a penalty?
20:55Ale Moreno:No. I think it's a bit playful. It's not like he's stumbling him. He's like, he really booted him. I don't. I like that, Don. I think it's a little bit playful.
21:05Kay Murray:I thought I saw Joel Pedro laughing as he was lying on the floor. You have just earned yourself an honouring membership to the goalkeepers union, Don. Let's just high-kick everybody. Explain your interpretation of playful, Don. Hold on, Don. Don, let me ask you a question. Do you take your boys out the back door and play football with them? And then give them one of them? Yeah. Yeah. Play on. Mrs. Don is saying, what are you doing? It's going to be just being playful. Stop. Have we got it? Can we show it? Don, just explain to us your interpretation of playful.
21:46Ale Moreno:Right. But why I think it's playful, when you see it a little bit closer on the second line, this one here, there's no follow through. It's just a little tap on the hand. I don't think there's any force. I don't think there's momentum. I don't think he follows through. I think the foot's high. I don't know I don't think that endangers an opponent do you? When you catch someone on the hand it's got to endanger an opponent it's not really causing Jaad Pedro any harm is it? The tap on the fingers That's on anywhere else
22:15Kay Murray:on the pitch that's surely a free kick if a player does that Well you've got a point I hate that phrase Is that the goalkeeper union? Union's back together I'm trying not to lose more goalkeepers union membership here to Don's point you do the things Don's are saying, it's not just a penalty, it's a red card. Right. If you, with any force and Lego, that's not just a penalty, it's a red card. This is a penalty. I don't, as much as I quite support Don's thinking, I'm not sure it necessarily holds. Meanwhile, for Rosinha, obviously great to have Cole Palmer scoring the goals and backing the goals again.
22:54Kay Murray:Yeah, you want your top man to be scoring goals and feeling good and confident and working the ball and doing great things. So, I mean, it's an absolute dream for the manager to have Colt Palmer doing this in this game. Absolutely. And a nice game, obviously, to bounce back after what happened midweek, Don.
23:14Ale Moreno:Yeah, I listened to Leon Rossini off the back of the Napoli game and off the back of the West Ham game. And he felt as though with a short turnaround after the game in Naples that he had to rest about four or five players for the West Ham game. And it backfired the first 45 minutes and they got pumped off West Ham. and then he brought his top men on and they won the game 3-2. Then I listened to his interview afterwards. He said, listen, I thought I'd done the right thing. And in hindsight, it sort of, he was right to do it off the back of the Napoli game going into a West Ham game, but he just felt as though probably the drop off from the calibre of the first team players to the players that he picked last week wasn't as good.
23:51Ale Moreno:So no surprise today. I think he made four or five changes and picked his best side.
23:56Kay Murray:Just a reminder, ESPN FC returns to your screens tomorrow. I'll be reflecting on Liverpool against Manchester City. Real Madrid are in action as well. And speaking of La Liga, of course, today it was Barcelona with a chance to extend their lead at the top of the table. Here to take you through what happened in their clash against Mallorca, here's Kane and Abby. Thank you, Dan. Yes, let's head to Barcelona, where Barcelona were taking on Mallorca at the camp now today. And obviously, names missing like Rafinha and Pedri from this one, with Gabi there on the bench. But what we were seeing early on was Mallorca finding some joy down the left, particularly through Virgili.
24:34Ale Moreno:And Virgili was very active in the first half. Jules Kunde fails to clear the danger. And then Virgili gets a second opportunity to try to get his head up and find the Murici across the six-yard box, unable to do so as Eddie Garcia comes in with a sliding challenge.
24:50Kay Murray:And once again, we would see Mallorca have another chance here. This time it is the big man, Murici.
24:55Ale Moreno:And Virgilli, this time, not so much on the left-hand side. He starts working the middle, then holds his run, finds himself on the right-hand side, gets his head up. He is onside and so is Muricchi. But Muricchi can't quite get a touch on it or the touch that he wanted.
25:09Kay Murray:Yeah, Toali's pointing Virgilli everywhere on both flanks running here at Gilles Condé.
25:16Ale Moreno:And at this point, you're thinking, Mallorca are doing a lot of good things. They're finding a lot of space. Virgilli is active. They're creating chances, but you have to do something with those chances because eventually Barcelona is gonna make you pay.
25:29Kay Murray:And that's what we are going to see in the 26th minute. First, we'd see a chance from Marcus Rashford going wide.
25:35Ale Moreno:I thought today was a step forward for Marcus Rashford, able to create a chance on his own, cuts to the inside, and much like the last sequence, he cuts to the inside here. There's a whole bunch of rebounds, maybe a hint of offside for Robert Lewandowski, who is standing in an offside position to begin with. But as David Lopez makes an attempt to head this ball, it's a legitimate attempt to clear the danger. He does not. The ball goes backwards, falls to the path of Dani Olmo. And from there, once he gets to Lewandowski, Lewandowski had already reestablished himself in an onside position. Patience from Lewandowski with the finish, 1-0.
26:13Kay Murray:We wondered if Marcus Rashford had picked up an injury just before this, but this was his free kick, and it's so close for Lamin-Yemal.
26:19Ale Moreno:Leo Román makes a save but doesn't quite do enough with it. It falls on the path of Jules Koundé who puts it into a dangerous area. You're thinking Laminya Mal might kind of range two yards out. He's got a score. Does not.
26:31Kay Murray:Now into the second half we go. Should this have been a penalty? Yes.
26:34Ale Moreno:Yes. Yes. Laminya Mal gets taken down by a dangling leg from Johan Mojica who goes high. Just look at the number 10. And that number 10 on Laminya Mal is short. The knee of Johan Mojica makes contact. It should have been a penalty. for whatever reason it was not.
26:51Kay Murray:Now Casado tries his luck here.
26:55Ale Moreno:Deflection once again. Of David Lopez, who's had an active last few weeks, off his head, off the crossbar and out.
27:03Kay Murray:One thing we know is that Laminya Mal has been on fire.
27:07Ale Moreno:And if you're Pablo Maffeo, where should you show Laminya Mal? To his right. You know he wants to come back to his left. Shouldn't have this much space to begin with, but force him to the right, force him to the right, force him to the right. He does not, and then once he's opened up for that left foot, it doesn't help that Valiant gets out of the way to nothing. Get it, get it. Oh, all right. Oh, get it.
27:32Kay Murray:Lerini Mal coming off to a standing ovation here, and you cannot blame those fans. He has been spectacular this season and in recent games as well. However, Mallorca continue to try and find a goal, chance for them here.
27:48Ale Moreno:Antonio Sánchez cuts out the pass from Fermín López, he opens up his body but once he does that he essentially tells Joan Garcia where the shot is going to go and Sabina needs to save.
27:59Kay Murray:And it ends up being a win for Barcelona in the end, here it is Marc Benal to make it three.
28:06Ale Moreno:Really good combination of the counter attack opportunity from Barcelona, hold up play in the Initial phase of the play by Ferran Torres, eventually Marvin Alv. Their man running, focus and clean finish. Cuts to the inside, 3-0 and deflection as well. Barcelona too much for Mallorca.
28:24Kay Murray:Yes, and so Barcelona getting it done. Obviously a big week ahead of them with Atleti coming up in the Copa del Rey semifinal. This is how things are looking right now. They're on 58 points ahead of Real Madrid playing against Valencia tomorrow. Whatever happens, Barcelona stay top in La Liga this weekend at the bottom end of the table. Mallorca still dangerously close to the drop zone, just two points above it as it stands right now, but finishing the round in 15th as it would stand right now. So let's get the reactions to what we saw today. Barcelona had a bit more of a laboured first half. Things came for them in the second though, Ale.
28:59Ale Moreno:And we mentioned earlier that there was a contrast and a marked difference between the first half of Barcelona and the second half of Barcelona. And if you want to encapsulate it in one expression, is pace of play. The speed of play of Barcelona in the second half, it was much quicker. And I mean, the movement was much quicker ahead of the ball. The movement of the ball itself was much quicker. The lines were higher up the field. The intensity defensively was also much higher from Barcelona. They were regaining possession of the ball in higher areas. And from there, you start looking for where the spaces are going to be.
29:32Ale Moreno:And if you want to look for spaces, look no further than La Minya Mal. Quiet first half. and it becomes clear to see that it's a quiet first half because we expect so much out of La Minha Mal. Second half, he was just, give me the ball, I'm going to break people down. It doesn't help that if you're Mallorca, you allow La Minha Mal to do what he wants to do naturally, which is to go to his left foot. But he now has gained so much respect from opposing players, respect that now borders on fear. And so as they try to get close to him and they try to close down the space, they don't know exactly how to approach him.
30:12Ale Moreno:And he's now reached that point to where a little dip of the shoulder and he's gone. And, you know, think about a left-footed player for Barcelona with a little dip of the shoulder and he's gone. And this is when you start seeing the comparisons to Lionel Messi. Because this healthy respect that now borders on fear that we're seeing from other players, it seems to be happening across the league. La Minha Mar is hot right now.
30:33Kay Murray:Speaking of respect, Hansi Flick's been talking about his star man right now and how he's listening to him in training. We're not hearing Hansi Flick now talk about egos in the squad, which we were saying before. Maybe he's putting this as a pointed message towards Laminya Mal. At the moment, he's really happy with how he's training, how he's playing and everything he's seeing.
30:51Ale Moreno:Yeah, and against Albacete, maybe unfairly so, but I highlighted the fact that in the second half, there were a lot of hands up in the air from Laminya Mal, and I didn't like it. And I think, of course, I'm not inside the locker room. I don't know what the communications are. But I'm sure that Hansi Flick, if he were able to see what I saw, he probably would have gone to Lamin and said, you don't need to do all this. You just play the game. And you do what makes you a special player. And he's doing it at a very high level right now. And to be fair to Lamin Yaman, not only is he a difference maker in terms of creating opportunities for others, what we have seen over the last few weeks is that now he's added consistency in scoring goals.
31:32Ale Moreno:Had a great goal today, could have scored a couple more, but he's always active, he's always dangerous, he's always a difference maker, and teams don't know how to defend him. Today, Mallorca had two or three players around him, and it didn't matter. He comes off the line, and that's another thing that separates him from other players that play in the wing areas. Think about Vinny, for example. Vinny stays on the left-hand side most of the time, and so it becomes easier to address because you use the help of the sideline, You use 2v1 situations, 3v1 situations, and force him to get rid of the ball.
32:01Ale Moreno:Whereas Laminia, he'll be on the line. He'll come off the line. He'll combine down the middle. He'll go underneath. He'll be here. He'll be there. He'll be everywhere. And it's difficult to pick up defensively. And that's why all of a sudden you find yourself top of the 18-yard box. Laminia by himself. Maffeo late to challenge. He takes a shot on. What a great goal.
32:17Kay Murray:Now, on Thursdays, ESPN FC, we were talking about some questionable decisions in La Liga officiating. I want to go back to that penalty shout that we did see in the second half involving that man, Laminya Mal.
32:27Ale Moreno:Yeah, I think it's 100 % a penalty. The challenge from Mojica, he comes with his left foot across the ball, doesn't get anywhere near the ball, and catches Laminya Mal high on the thigh of Laminya Mal. Laminya Mal is not looking for the contact. He's actually basically gone past Mojica. He's looking to go and take a shot on goal. Now, it is clear to me that Mojica steps across, and as he steps across, he now makes contact. Should have been a penalty called by the referee, who was right there and saw it very closely. The referee didn't give it, and I'm thinking, well, VAR is going to get involved.
33:00Ale Moreno:Apparently, they watched the show on Thursday where Sid was so upset with VAR decisions and said, nah, we don't want Sid angry with us again. It should have been a penalty, whether called by the referee or VAR. Nobody got involved. Apparently, no penalty.
33:13Kay Murray:Yes, Sid was sick of soft penalties in La Liga. There's a name for that. Penaltitos. Penaltitos. Yes, okay. Up next for Almin, Jamal and Barcelona is a date at the Metropolitano on Thursday for the first leg semifinal of the Copa del Rey. It's Atleti against Barca on Thursday. A day before that, we have a Basque derby as Athletic Club take on Real Sociedad Games. You will be able to see right here on ESPN+. Quick time out. Some breakfast intel you want to know about. 34:25Kay Murray:Newcastle lose at home again for the fourth time this season. This time, defeated 3-2 against Brentford, leading them 12th in the table. We, of course, have got a couple of former Newcastle men with us. Let's start with you, Don. Don, this just isn't good enough, is it?
34:44Ale Moreno:No, it's not. I mean, I'm still in favour of Eddie Howe. I've still got faith in him. But it's just been a really stop-start season. If you want to go to the job that he's done overall, getting Newcastle into Champions League spots twice and winning a trophy, brilliant. But the away form has been terrible this season. And when you start losing home games, which I've sat here for years and I've said I'll back Newcastle against anyone in the Premier League or anyone in the Champions League, and they normally beat teams at home because the fans are on it and they drive them forward. The atmosphere is great.
35:16Ale Moreno:Today, it was a little bit flat. I thought the officials got everything right apart from the first one. I thought Trippier should have been sent off. But performance-wise, it wasn't there. Atmosphere-wise, it wasn't there. And that's a little bit worrying, I think, for Eddie Howe. He had all these top men on. He's been criticised of not playing Volta Marder and Wissler together or not playing two up front. Well, he tried that towards the end of the game to try and win the game. Then it backfired with a Taurus strike. So, yeah, he's got some problems to solve.
35:45Kay Murray:January 7th, last time they won a game. That's when they beat Leeds at home. But since then, Shaq, you lose to Leiters for Villa. You lose to Liverpool, obviously knocked out of the League Cup. These are teams that you feel you should be competing with. And it just doesn't seem that Newcastle have it at the moment to be competing with the level of teams that they should be on par with. It's been a struggle all season long. Don spoke about the away form, which has haunted them all season long. at least they've been good at home. You would think up until late, as you mentioned, you lose to Villa, you lose to Brentford.
36:17Kay Murray:Before that, domestically, you also lose to Manchester City in the Cup. And while over the last few weeks, the absence of Bruno Guimaraes has been the big kind of excuse. He's back from the start today. And really, the comeback was good, the result deflating. And it leaves Eddie Harwick with significant problems. And again, you bring in both Volta Madder and Vista in the summer. And as we sit right now, we were talking about Arteta and his issues in a team that's leading the league. I'm not quite sure who starts next weekend for Newcastle up top. I'm not sure if Eddie Howe starts both. Both Vultimada and Vista neither have had any real security in their position.
36:59Kay Murray:And as a result, I don't think Eddie Howe has gotten the best out of either. And as a result, you just have a team that is not firing. And they lost four at home, Stevie. To me, their biggest problem is the two centre-backs, the back line, the goalkeeper. They've lost 10 goals this week. 10 goals in three games. You know, every time you watch Newcastle, it's a different centre-back pairing. Chow, Schaar, Portman, Bonn. I mean, and again, I'm not sure Pope's back to where he was. Yeah. So I think the biggest problem is defensively. If they can stop letting goals in, then they'll start getting better and they'll certainly start winning games is what they'll do.
37:44Kay Murray:But right now, you can't see them winning because they can't keep a clean sheet. As you know, managing maintenance, repair, and operations is never easy. 38:58Kay Murray:For a lot more on what's happening in the world of women's soccer, be sure to check out Football W. Kane Murray is alongside Ali. Who's happening left? At 30 Eastern on ESPN. I don't care. What's this Kane? Who do you think it is? Doesn't look like her. Well, she's had her hair dye, hasn't she, since? And her part changed. And her part changed. It's been all go. Meanwhile, back to our feature game today. Barcelona beating Mallorca by three goals to nil. Gemma caught up with Hansi Flick and Robert Lewandowski after the game. I was not happy with the first half, of course, and I think also the players not.
39:31Kay Murray:So we played not on our level, there was no dynamic. We played with passing, we were too slow. So I asked them if they are satisfied with the first half. So I said, are you? And they say, no, they are not satisfied. So it's like that. But of course, we showed them like we always do. So, situations, what we have to make better. And it's about positioning. It's about also the passing, the quality of the pass, also the speed of the pass. It's this, you know, this was in the first half, it was not like Baza wants to play. Hopefully, I think on Thursday against Atletico, we will see another team from the first minute.
40:17Kay Murray:So, this is what I want to see also today. But I played also football. I know things are, and I think in the first half we were not 100 % with the right attitude, the right mentality, but we changed it in the second half and this was good then. Good win for Barcelona, it was a little bit more difficult than what we could expect, but with patience you managed to get this 3-0.
40:42Ale Moreno:Yeah, you know, always when we're playing against the team that they play very deep, sometimes we have to find a way how to score the goal, sometimes we miss the position that We should be more forward to try the space behind the line, try to find the space also in the box. But in the end we won, we tried to score the goal as well and I think we have next three points so we can be happy with the result from today.
41:11Kay Murray:That is it then, that brings us to the end of today's show. Lots of action of course tomorrow including Liverpool against Manchester City, Real Madrid as well. but be sure to stay tuned as Extra Time is next.
41:29Kay Murray:Welcome into the latest edition of Extra Time. We've got Xhaka here, Stevie as well. Don joins us. Was it Sesame Street that had the word of the day? I think that is playful. Playful is very much the word of the day because, of course, in the Wolves-Chelsea game, Sar picked Jao Pedro. We were surprised the penalty wasn't given, but you described it as what, Don?
41:50Ale Moreno:Playful. Yes. I think we're going to use that more often now. Anything some thinks a little bit dangerous, we'll say playful. Just a playful kick.
41:57Kay Murray:And you're like, he kicked him in the hand. What difference does it make where he kicked him?
42:02Ale Moreno:Oh, come on. He did. Right. I mean, I know I'm in the minority, right? But when the goalkeeper, Jose Sarr, jumped for the ball, his foot was in the air. I don't think he kicked him. I just thought his foot was in the air. Then there's a natural coming together. I thought it was. So he has no control over his leg.
42:21Kay Murray:It's just like flopping about. I'm here to bring back. So he jumped in the air, his leg goes like, his leg goes like, oh. You know what this game needs? Goalkeeper in the 80s. I'm just going to do this. If you get in the way, then it doesn't really matter. I can't control my hand.
42:38Ale Moreno:Hey, Shaka, you boys, you boys in the 90s, you boys used to leave knees into the back of us. You used to do a lot worse.
42:45Kay Murray:And you seem to be wanting to bring it back. I'm on for it. When you're trying to kick someone, you go, that's just playful, yeah. I get it. Just a little tickle. Just a little tickle. A little tickle. Meanwhile, Don, I thought it was interesting, on Instagram, you kind of chronicled you cooking last night. This was the end result. How tasty does this look in your opinion, Stevie? Do we have the picture of... Yeah, here it comes. Yeah. Ready, Don? What was it called? Yeah.
43:20Kay Murray:I don't know about what it's called, where did it come from?
43:28Ale Moreno:Can I just tell you, it was tremendous. It was tremendous. My mistake was in the presentation and it was too late. I should have put the sauce on the side and let everyone see the steak. The fact that I put the sauce on the top made it look a bit of a mess.
43:48Kay Murray:Your mistake was taking a photo, unfortunately. That's a mistake.
43:54Ale Moreno:Hey, a bit of flambe.
43:56Kay Murray:Flambe going on. Flambe. You're just making whiffings up now. A little flambe with the strolling off. Flambe. There was a bit of fire on there. Yeah, yeah. Was Ange Ball more successful than Frank Ball, Don?
44:11Ale Moreno:Yeah. I mean, it's mad, isn't it? I mean, we all sat here and thought, this is not football, what Andrew's producing. This is like full-backs doing what they want. They were winning games 4-3 or losing 5-4 or just conceding a million goals. It's just at least they had a bit of life about them. And I feel for Thomas Frank because I think he is genuinely a good coach. And I just look at him, I just think he looks like a bit of a broken man. and maybe that's more that's more to do probably with the players more than Ange and more than Frank look at the tag on this
44:50Kay Murray:Shaka's vacation wow oh boy this is your last show isn't it we've got a question a little later on yeah I'm here tomorrow but I'm not on the show but you're not on the show so that doesn't count Stevie did you want to answer you look trying to do something I was just thinking about Thomas Frank's face yeah And the guy. How did Don describe him as a beaten man? He just looked as if he had nothing. Broken. He had nothing left. That's it. Instead of worrying about how often Jograir scores, Stevie, 14 Arsenal players have scored. Shouldn't the balance of scorers be more important for the title run than having one goal scorer with a lion's share, like the issues with Haaland on a dry spell for City?
45:33Kay Murray:I don't disagree that that's important. Absolutely, yeah. That's how you would like it to be. However, when you go and spend£65-70 million on a centre forward, you want to be scoring regularly. And he's not. Who sent it? Milan? Milan. I can't argue that that's absolutely the way you'd love to do it. Spread them around. Magic means you're not relying on one person. But, at the end of the day, Docky Rez is not doing what he was brought in to do. Scored two today, didn't he? Off the bench. Clever little lad, eh? but still score. Yeah. Yeah, off the bench. I don't know why that's a caveat. Well, because that's where he's gonna be.
46:17Kay Murray:All right, but if he comes on and scores, that's great. Well, that's perfect, isn't it? Good, so what's the problem? Great signing. Good. What a signing that is. If he comes off the bench, he scores too every time. Yeah. Imagine going to your boss and saying, I want 65 mil to put somebody on the bench, please. They'll be like, oh yeah, yeah, let's go. But I'll give you the Premier League title. Oh, okay. Look at this one. That's the old na-na-na-na-na face. He's got you, Steve. He's got you all ends up. He's got you all ends up, Stevie. Oh, yeah. He's got you. I was just being playful. Here we go.
46:56Kay Murray:This is a good question. Start bench sales, Shaq. Palmer, Cherky, Verts. Arnold Palmer.
47:07Kay Murray:Start. Sure. So who do you start? So you're making a team, who do you choose out of those three, if they're all lined up at recess? Um, oh boy. I guess I'm... I'm gonna sell Cherky.
47:26Kay Murray:I am going to... Oh boy. I'm gonna start Palmer, bench baits. Seaming? Just because of Palmer's... I agree with that. The same? I work at the Premier League.
47:40Ale Moreno:I am starting Wurz. I am selling Cherki and benching Cole Palmer.
47:48Kay Murray:Stevie, were you or your manager ever tempted to push you further up? Somewhat of the Bale situation. You have quite the gold catalogue.
48:02Kay Murray:What do you mean up front basically? Is that what you're saying? I suppose Bale started as a left back didn't he? Right. And then he played more advanced as his career went on. Right. You had bits and bobs everywhere really. I did, yeah. But you never played quite up as high as Bale did.
48:20Kay Murray:No, no. I mean, when I played and you played as a wide midfielder, you had basically two jobs. 50 % of your job was the defensive side and the other 50 % was going forward. In terms of when Bale was playing the game, his job was to go forward. You know, it was basically everybody else will take care of the defensive side, you get yourself forward. But I would say I did play centre-forward once. Did you? For A United, yeah. When you were young? Yeah, yeah. How did you get on? After about 25 minutes. You didn't play it once. After 25 minutes I went back to the field back. Ah, okay. Yeah. Yeah, no, couldn't play when I was back to goal.
49:07Kay Murray:I'm already playing forward, but playing back to goal, not my... What was the main issue? No. Didn't know what to do. Not my game. Right. Yeah. Not my game. Not my game, son. Don, the other day the topic of conversation was you moving to many clubs during your career. Do you remember what's the longest period of time you stayed at a club after you left Liverpool? For the record, Dan said you wouldn't have a clue. Or just in general.
49:38Ale Moreno:Who is that? Andas. Andas is not far off because of a reason where I actually didn't stay too long. As in, I don't think I played more than 100 games for anyone. Right. So there might be a 94, there might be a 95, there might be an 80 odd, whatever it is. It feels like the longest time I had at a football club was Everton. That's incorrect. I think I was at Liverpool for four years. What?
50:08Kay Murray:It's incorrect. What? Your most seasons in one stretch is not Everton. West Ham then? Yes. West Ham. Your second stint at West Ham. Now, where did you play the most games? Yes. in one stretch.
50:27Ale Moreno:What, as in the four years I was at West Ham? Surely it's West Ham. I did do my cruise years. That's a tough question. No, no. Everton.
50:34Kay Murray:It was at West Ham, no. My God. You were right. Everton. Everton is correct, yeah. How many games do you reckon you played? 98 to 2000, Don.
50:47Kay Murray:72. 65, 70? 86 games. and that was the longest you ever played in one stretch for a club.
50:55Ale Moreno:That's what I mean. I've got like... I didn't know this, but someone told me when I retired that I never played a hundred times for any of the clubs that I played for, which is bonkers. What does that tell people about you? It tells you that I was in demand.
51:14Kay Murray:Very good, Tom. Very good. Don, you got on this one. There you go. You got on this one. You got me there, Don. You got me there, Don. You got me there, Don.
51:35Kay Murray:Stevie, who are you cheering in the Super Bowl? And what's the percentage chance Don will be watching the game so late in England? Well, that's obviously used to work for the world. 100 % I will. Yeah, yeah, Patriots, absolutely. Patriots? Yeah. Yeah, 100%, nice. Absolutely. What's your biggest concern?
51:56Kay Murray:They don't win. Do you know the name of their quarterback these days? Me? Yes. Yeah. Yep. First name? I'll tell you what. Honestly, God. You really want me to tell you. Are you trying to get me? No, no, you've got it. You've obviously got it. Yeah, Drake. Good boy. There you go. Hey, you got him there. Hey, you got him there. Hey, Don, you got him there. You got him there.
