In short
The episode of ESPN FC focuses on Premier League title pressure and Liverpool’s crisis after Mo Salah’s public comments. Guests are Frank LeBoeuf (1998 France World Cup winner) and Shaka Hislop (2006 Trinidad and Tobago World Cup hero who denied Zlatan Ibrahimović a goal), plus Don Hutchison (football analyst), Luis Garcia (former Liverpool/Barcelona player), and Gab Marcotti (ESPN analyst).
Key claims
Arsenal remain “best team” and title contenders, but Aston Villa’s late Buendía winner shows Villa’s improved mentality under Unai Emery; Don Hutchison says Arsenal’s title odds stay similar despite the slip, citing Villa’s nine wins in 10 and City’s three straight wins. Salah’s “spicy” remarks after Liverpool drew/failed to win at Leeds are framed as a likely endgame: rotation disputes with Arne Slot, Salah feeling “someone doesn’t want me,” and Liverpool’s defensive fragility (Canate blamed). Notable examples include Buendía’s late goal vs Arsenal, Phil Foden’s form for Man City, and Inter Miami’s Messi-led MLS Cup win.

0:32Hello, everyone, and welcome into our ESPN FC studios for the latest edition of the show. I'm Alexis Younes, and I am joined by 1998 World Cup winner with France, Frank Labeouf, and 2006 World Cup hero with Trinidad and Tobago, the man that denied Zlatan Ibrahimović a goal, Shaka Hislop.
0:56Frank Leboeuf:Hero in the Caribbean. I feel patronized, I was really bad. No, you shouldn't be. Speaking of feeling attacked, though, Shaka, Mo Salah had some very spicy words for Arnazlott and Liverpool after the Reds dropped points yet again in the Premier League. We're going to talk a lot about that later on in the show, but let's have a look at some of the big results on Saturday. A lot of the big names playing Arsenal. The league leaders going down to Aston Villa. Unai Emery working some serious magic with the villains in that game. and then Manchester City. You'd think that Sunderland would put up quite a fight.
1:31We know that they are a tough nut to crack, but City came up with a 3-0 win, and now that moves them to just two points behind Arsenal in the Premier League standings. All right, let's welcome in our Don Hutchison, who's known for his slightly accurate percentages, which we're going to get to in a bit. But speaking of being accurate and spot on, our Frank LaBeouf predicted this. Yes, and I was right. about one minute or ten seconds. No, but that's something that I like. Yeah, everybody is predicting that Arsenal is going to win the Premier League, but we have a race. It's a pity that Chelsea fell asleep today again.
2:11Again. Again, yeah. But Man City, Aston Villa, they're chasing Arsenal, and it's good for the Premier League. It's what we want. We want suspense, and it's what we have, and I'm very pleased, even if I think that Arsenal is the best team in the Premier League this season. Yeah, it's an interesting one there when we look at this game here. Shaka, I mean, how many times on this show have you said that this title, even though Liverpool are the defending champions, the way Arsenal were going at one point, it looked like it was theirs to lose. But here we are now talking about a two-point gap.
2:41Frank Leboeuf:Yeah, I'm with you. I've been saying all along this is Arsenal's side to lose. But before we get to Arsenal, I have to give Villa credit. I thought Villa, I thought it was an incredible game of football. Really enjoyed it. And it almost felt like both teams had kind of settled for a draw at the very last, the 12th round of a heavyweight fight. And then all of a sudden, Buendia pops up and, well, without question, a knockout punch, virtually last kick of the game. And credit to Villa, because, again, I thought their football simply was that good. They've been that good of form. A couple of bumps in the road, but they really have put some results together.
3:14Frank Leboeuf:Credit to them and Unai and Rifford for the way they continue to go about their business. From an Arsenal perspective, it feels like yesterday we were talking about Eberache Eze and his performance against Spurs and how good he looked through the middle. And he could have been taken off after 30 minutes. I'll be honest. Now, I am as willing as anybody to sing Eze's praises. Of course. But he or everything from Arsenal came down the right-hand side in that first half. Everything came through Bakayo Saka. The change had to be made because Eze was just non-existent. And then the other thing is, Sandro Trossard, he always seems to pop up exactly when needed.
4:01Frank Leboeuf:I think he is one of the most undervalued players in the Premier League. He just seems to know where to be at the right time and find a goal at the right time. Sadly, he had to come up for the end. He's coming back from an injury, and you just wonder how much of that is affected. but Arteta had to take a chance, had to take Arteta off. He introduced Kiyokoros at the break as well, similarly coming off an injury. And that certainly changed things, particularly in the first 15 or 20 minutes of the second half. And Arsenal are by far the better of two teams. But, like I said, Villa are a far better team than we have been willing to give them credit for.
4:39Frank Leboeuf:Even now seeing them sitting third, you just kind of wonder when did this all happen. and in the end, it's hard to say one team deserved to lose this, but Villa kept going to the end. In all honesty, I'm not sure that they fully deserved three points, but they were deserving because they refused to lie down. I want to go back to Aston Villa and Unai Emery, who had had a very hard time at Paris Saint-Germain. But I have to say, without changing the team, without changing the players, without changing the tactic, And he changed the mentality of the players. We're going to talk about Liverpool. Oh, yeah.
5:19Where Anoslotti is trying to find any tactics or anything. But with Magin, Onana, Kamara and Tillmans in the middle of the park with the help of Rodgers, it's amazing. What I saw today, it's the first time that I saw Arsenal being in trouble in the middle of the park. And they have Declan Rice, where I highly rank because for me, he's the best midfielder in the world right now. But today, I saw four midfielders working so hard and being technically so precise. And that's due to Unai Emery. He changed the mentality of the player. They are very bad beginning of the season. And without changing anything in terms of tactics, in terms of individuals, he was able to change the way of thinking of the players and made them, being like last season, a very good team.
6:10Well, I know our Don Hutchison is just itching to get into this and give us some percentages. Don, a couple of shows ago you said that it was 50-50 for either Arsenal or City to win the Premier League title. After what we just saw now this weekend, what percentage do you give Arsenal now to win the title? No, I'm still the same. I think on the last show, three or four days ago, I think I even went 60-30 in Arsenal's favour because with the five-point gap, I thought they were going to cruise on. But listen, this is what the Premier League does to you. Villa, I thought it was a brilliant game of football today.
6:42I think Unai Emery gets a hard deal really in England. I think he's a very underrated manager. I think he's certainly, I think, the best in the Premier League at making substitutions when needed. He proved that today by making the five. It was a brilliant game. I thought when Arsenal got it back to 1-1, there was only one team that looked like they were going to win the game, and that was Arsenal. Then Villa got their second wind and won it right to death. But the league table is so, so narrow at the moment. I mean, Villa's form is incredible. Nine wins out their last 10 games, which has propelled them into a title contender all of a sudden.
7:16So you'd put them in the mix. I don't think they'll make it. But I think when you look at Man City, the form that they're in, they've just hit three on the spin. So they're in great form. They've got four winnable fixtures. Because in this time of year, Alexis throws up a really different dynamic than I think every other country in terms of their league. All the teams that play today more or less play again the same teams in about three weeks' time. So Leeds have to play Liverpool at Anfield in three or four weeks' time. Villa have to play Arsenal. Then at the Emirates, it's just one of these quirks of the Premier League.
7:47So Villa seemed to be, over recent years, Arsenal's bogey side. And it was a brilliant, entertaining game of football today. But I wouldn't read too much into Arsenal losing the game today. It was just one game too far for them after the win last time out three or four days ago. All right. Well, as I said, Sunderland are a tough nut to crack. Arsenal learned that the hard way. But Manchester City up against them today. Frank, City just got the job done. And that train is coming along nicely. Yeah, exactly. And it's against Sunderland. It's not against a random team. It's a team who, Sunderland is the team who beat most of the big teams.
8:21And credit to Guardiola's men. They did what they had to do. It's crazy to see that team when Allen touched one ball the first half. Yeah. But the people, they did the job. And the center back, Jazz and Guardiola scored the goal because Allen wasn't able to do so. But City did what they had to do. And there is nothing much to say. They are on the way to go back to their best. Maybe not the best of the best, but enough the best to compete against Arsenal. Well, you know that our Don Hutchison only does comes on the biggest games, and he was on call for this Manchester City game. Don, and just seeing Phil Foden find the back of the net again, we really are seeing him enjoying his football in the last couple of games.
9:07Is he back? He is back. Five goals in three games. I mean, he was brilliant today, but Cherki was man of the match by a mile, in my opinion, not just because of his Rabona assist for the Phil Foden header. He just took the game. When I watch Ray and Cherky play off the back of how Phil Foden played today, and he's picking up the balls in the tight pockets, I think Guardiola's realized now without Kevin De Bruyne, you can't play Phil Foden on the wing anymore. He's not a left-sided player. He's not a right-sided player. He's a genuine number 10. So I think Guardiola's realized off the indifferent form last season, play Phil Foden as a number 10, he'll get his goals.
9:46but Cherki reminds me of the sort of Harlem Globetrotter. He's got so much skill and natural talent and flair. He's an amazing player to watch. I don't think I've seen a player like him for a long, long time. The way he can just play the game exactly how he wants to be played. And I don't think even Pep wants to try and control him. He'll try and manipulate him into certain areas and put him into positions. But when he gets the ball, my word, he's a genius. Well, if Phil Foden continues like this, there is no doubt that he'll be one of the first names in that England squad for the World Cup next year.
10:17Here's a look at England's group after the draw yesterday. They have Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. And this is their schedule. They're going to go from Dallas to Boston and then to New Jersey in a couple of early games, at least early by their standards, which means maybe some heat that will affect them there too. And we know the English don't really like the heat. Gab Marcotti is joining us to talk about this now. Gab, how do England deal with this? Do you think they will be comfortable with this schedule? Well, look, I mean, I think a lot of planning is going to go into this. There's different ways that the teams approach these.
10:57I was listening to what Shaka said before about the travel and moving around. I mean, the trend in recent World Cups, not Qatar, obviously, because that was all in one city. But prior to that, what we saw was teams saying, all right, this is our base camp. and we're just going to fly out just for the game, in and out. They're not even going to notice that they're in Dallas or Boston or whatever. It's going to be pretty much the way a lot of these players treat the Champions League, where you might be going to Norway one week and Astana the next week and Lisbon the week after that. So the idea is, I mean, that's certainly one approach.
11:38Forget about acclimatizing. you know it's it's a couple hours uh more or in this case for for england you know one hour time difference that's not a big deal climate different well in this case there's a stadium but but if you were going elsewhere um you know what's it going to be like let's just go in play before the body even realizes it's in a it's in a different place we'll get them back out that is one approach other people um prefer to give them a little more time to get used to the situation but that also means upending your training routine. You know, you're home away from home where you're going to be hopefully for five, six, seven weeks during the World Cup.
12:16That kind of goes out the window. You lose that. So there's give and take. There's sports science or psychologists. And of course, ultimately, the national team coach will be making the call on this. But I don't think it's as much of a factor as it's been in the past. Although I guarantee this, if things go awry, it's going to be a very convenient excuse. It will be indeed. All right. Well, it's now time for another quick break, but do not go anywhere. Mo Salah had some spicy words for Liverpool. We'll get into that next.

14:29Well, it was another frustrating day for Arnest Zlat and Liverpool as they dropped points in stunning fashion to Leeds. We know Ellen Road is definitely no easy place to go, but it was what was said by Mo Salah after the game that has stolen all the headlines. He said, I don't know why this is happening for me. I don't get it. I have done so much for this club. I don't have to go every day fighting for my position because I earned it. I'm not bigger than anyone. I had a good relationship with the manager. All of a sudden, we don't have any relationship. I don't know why. It seems to me that someone doesn't want me in the club.
15:06It's very clear that someone wants me to get all the blame. The club promised in the summer a lot of promise for me. And so far, I am on the bench for three games. All I can say is keep the promises. Well, very, very spicy words from an understandably frustrated Mo Salah. Because if you're talking about some of Liverpool's greatest players, Don Hutchison, then Mo Salah is definitely on that list, despite the fact that he's not been hitting the mark this season. But is this now just pointing to an exit for him? 100%. I don't think there's any way back for him. It was done, I think, in the mix zone.
15:46Mo Salah's an intelligent man. He knows exactly what he's doing when he delivers the comments that he made. What you can't do if you play for any football club, especially Liverpool Football Club, is go after the club. You know, you could have differences with a manager. And a lot of what he's saying probably alludes to his personal relationship with Arnazslot when he said he was rotating Mo Salah for the West Ham game. I thought, in all honesty, he should have played him against Sunderland. Three games later, he's still on the bench. So there can't be rotation. so that's where his frustration's coming from.
16:20At the same time, you know, the guys will tell you, if Liverpool have got a right winger and he's in better form than Mo Salah, then you put your hands up and you go, right, I've got to fight for my place. Liverpool are playing Dominic Saboslay is a number 10 or a number eight on the right-hand side in Salah's position. So they're effectively saying a midfield player is better than you or in better form than you. So emotionally, he feels as though he's being let down. What you can't do is deliver those comments as if to say, look, you know, I've been, I'm paraphrasing, but he said he's been a great here and he feels as though he's been let down and he doesn't have to fight for his place anymore.
16:54You absolutely have to fight for your place. You do not get a start and bet for Liverpool on how great you've been over the last six, seven, eight years. You have to earn it. Now, he's not earned it this season. And it's not just Mo Salah, because Canate, I have to say, when you go to today's game, was horrendous. He cost Liverpool two goals today. So defending for Liverpool has been awful. There's a lack of bottle at the football club, how to manage a game at Leeds when you're winning 2-0. But we're talking Mo Salah and we have to. I'm not so sure, Alexis, I see a way back for him now. No way back for Mo Salah.
17:24Luis Garcia, you know I have to come to you as a former Liverpool man yourself. I'm sure this must be frustrating to watch. Just what do you think of it all, this latest result and seeing Salah speak out so spicily, if you will, about the club and the manager? Yeah, it's sad. to see that Salas has to come out and make that kind of statement. I'm not a big fan of making statements publicly and going on a press to make a complaint about any kind of situation that happened in the dressing room or happened to yourself. I think it's a way of not showing really what you're feeling to try to send a message, but the best way is to go straight and make a comment or talk to your manager, to your sporting director, to the person at the club, do you think that you should send a message and not to the press that it becomes like a bomb because it's not only about you anymore, it's about what is happening to the dressing room.
18:21Apart from that, I understand that he can be frustrated. He's a legend of the club. He's one of the most important players in the history of the club. And when you arrive to that situation where the age gets involved with the team not doing well, with the results not arriving, after a fantastic season. Suddenly, you only score four goals in the whole season. Don't forget, only four goals so far for Mo Salah, two of them from the penalty spot. So in the end, all that accumulation of situations appears to throw that into the press. And I think that you can see that there is two directions. I'm not bigger than anyone, but I already deserve my spot on the team.
19:04So you can see that he's really disappointed by the situation and frustrated. I'm not sure what is going to come out from this. I hope that they can have a talk and they can try to address the situation because definitely Liverpool, what it doesn't need right now is a lot more of noise around the club and the team needs to get together because that's the only way that they come out. Let's not forget. Only three points from the Champions League and it's true that it's a little bit further away from the top of La Liga, but the most important right now is to get closer to those Champions League positions because Liverpool out of Champions League, it could be a drama.
19:37Frank, when I started reading the quote from Mo Salah, you immediately said, wow, you're almost taken aback that he was speaking like this about club and the manager. I was very surprised by it because I really highly rank Mo Salah. And it's true that he has been one of the best, if he's not the best player that Liverpool have seen for a long time. But you cannot say that. I mean, he says, in fact, he said one thing, and after he said the opposite. He said that he's not asking for anything, but he earns his position. I think Anoslav gave him a lot of credit, and everybody talked about it, saying maybe that would be the time to put Salah Moussela on the bench just to see how it works, because he's not the Moussela we have seen last season, for example.
20:26And it's sad for him, but that was the reality of it. And you have the credit, you get some credit, but it doesn't last long in our time and our sport, because we need results. And as soon as you don't have results, you try to find where it doesn't work. Say, yeah, it doesn't work at the back, but it doesn't work also at front. And Mo Salah, as everybody else, lives in a competition world. And he has to accept that. Yes, he has been a very good player, but since the beginning of the season, he's only the shadow of himself. And Arnaud Slott has no choice but putting him on the bench. And what he said, it's not fair.
21:04It's not fair towards the club. It's not fair towards his teammates. And it's not a comment that I would expect from Mo Salah because I know the guy is normally very humble. Xhaka, as Don said, after this, he doesn't see any way back from Mo Salah. Is that how you see it as well?
21:19Frank Leboeuf:Yeah, kind of that way. And listen, we've had Mo Salah making public statements before, Jurgen Klopp and whatnot. And somehow they patch bridges and come up with inflated contracts. and that settles things down. But this time around, now, to everybody's point, your starting position is one that you earn. You earn week in, week out. You don't earn that starting spot today by what you did two or three seasons ago. And that seemed to be what Mo Salah is suggesting. Now, kind of given the position we are, given the amount of money that Mo Salah continues to command, and given some of his performances in years gone by, you understand that.
21:59Frank Leboeuf:But right now, was it five goals, three assists so far this season? Is that the return to pay somebody$300 ,000,$400 ,000 a week or whatever it is that Moussa is on? Now, the question then becomes, who can come in and take over that burden financially? Now, there's only ever going to be one answer, Sydney, right now, and that's Saudi Arabia, where there's an interest in January. Time will tell. But given his performances, he is not earning a starting position by his performances. He's certainly not earning a salary by his performances. So if he then kind of speaks out in this way against the club, it's kind of forcing Liverpool down one road and one road only.
22:41Frank Leboeuf:And that's out. Well, something tells me this story is far from over. And it's one I'm sure we will continue talking about on ESPN FC. We are on seven days a week on ESPN+. Well, it was a happy day for Barcelona as they ran riots in Sevilla. We'll look at all their goals next.
23:23any of the players. Doesn't matter. The bandwagon is for everyone. So grab a bag of Lay's, gather friends and keep the party going. Lay's official sponsor of the FIFA World Cup 2026. 24:10Co-hosts of USA were drawn in Group D with Paraguay, Australia, and the winner of a UEFA playoff which includes the likes of Turquia and Slovakia. Let's get some reaction from the US camp. Here's manager Mauricio Pochettino as well as Christian Pulisic. We need to be careful the message that we are going to send you know because every time that we are here talking the players are listening and the important thing is to put pressure and to try to be better. Us. That is a challenge. It's not to put pressure to say, oh, we need to win or we should win or we should be better. No, no, no, no. It's to put pressure, the good pressure is about to be better.
24:58The challenge is to be better today than tomorrow. I mean, obviously the first goal is to make it out of the group. We know our opponents, well, two of them at least, and we know we're going to play against and we have to finish obviously you know the top half of that group and that's our first goal and then once we get there it's uh it's a knockout tournament and uh from there no matter what round we lose in we won't be happy so you want to push as hard as we can and and yeah we're gonna we're gonna try to try to make a good run well yesterday we learned the groups of the world cup and today we learned the schedule here is who the usa will be facing and when and at what time First up is Paraguay.

25:39That's in L.A. Then they face Australia in Seattle. That's going to be a 3 p.m. game. And then it's back to L.A. for whomever wins that UEFA playoff C. Let's start off with our Frank Laboeuf, right? Because it's going to be a huge moment, Frank, for the USA. June 12th. I just want you to take me into the minds of what these players would be feeling as hosts going into that first game against Paraguay. The pressure that you must have felt with France, playing in France. What is it like? It's amazing. I remember seeing Christophe Dugary crying, saying, can you believe that we're going to play a World Cup at home?
26:15It says a lot about the love that we have for that game and the pressure you can feel and the pride that you go through with playing a World Cup in your own soil. And it's what the players are going to feel. They're going to have a great moment. They're going to have a great time. And it can be history for that country. So you have to think like that. When we started, we were criticized by the media and nobody really believed. But we believed in ourselves and we made sure we did everything to make it work. And it's possible for the USA. I mean, Paraguay, the first game, then Australia. It's possible to get the six points in the first two games.
26:55After, if it's Turkey, it's going to be another deal. But it's possible. And you launch your World Cup. And then after, you go with it, you go with the floor. But if you're into it, if all the players, they go in the same direction, something incredible is possible. But again, the first game, the pressure, the feeling is huge. It's why we wanted to be football players. Because we wanted to be in that moment. Yeah, I think I've interviewed a lot of the U.S. men's national team players. And they always say that that pressure is a privilege. And Shaka, we just had a look at the odds there, at least to win this group and the USA favorites to win this group.
27:35but that's no longer their standard. I know we were talking about this on Football Americas just yesterday, and you were saying that it has to be quarterfinals or bust for them.
27:43Frank Leboeuf:I think for a large section of the soccer supporting, football supporting public here in the U.S., anything less than a quarterfinal berth will be seen as a failure. And I think that's as sharp a line as it is. And then depending who you get in that draw, I mean, if you run up against a France or an Argentina, I think, again, football supporting public, kind of understands if they get the better of you. But if you come up against the Netherlands, as you did in 2022, and the Netherlands knocks you out in that quarterfinal, I don't think the supporting public will accept that. They will feel that the US should be better than that.
28:24Frank Leboeuf:That's the feeling here in the US. And now, I think the big difference between USA hosting this time around and playing as hosts and France in 98, France, dare I say, the football supporting public were a lot longer in knowing the game and supporting the national team. And understanding where those hurdles are and how tough it is to win a World Cup. But culturally, you know what it's like here in the U.S. It is win or bust. We are world champions or bust. And that does not translate to soccer. Sydney does as far as the U.S. is concerned. and that I think has added pressure to the U.S.'s men's national team.
29:05It's a very good point Chaka just made, the fact that the fans, they have a duty. We would have never won the World Cup without the fans because they believed in us and we felt it. And so if the American population wants the U.S. player to be better, they have to cheer for them, they have to be there, they have to give a good pressure and they have to attend because against some teams it's going to be hard. So players might feel playing away from home, as you were talking about the culture. It's very important the fans, they realize that the U.S. man national team need them. That's a duty that the population have towards their national teams.
29:47Well, we know this is going to be an historic World Cup, not just because it has been expanded to a lot of teams, but the fact that it's going to be a lot of miles of traveling and just have a look at who's going to have to travel the most. the USA actually will have to cover the sixth farthest route to play their games. Xhaka, is this a big deal?
30:04Frank Leboeuf:Of course it is. I think not only the miles covered, but the different conditions in a lot of those games. England, for instance, if they get to the knockout stages, they'll be playing in Mexico City. That has a challenge that nowhere else in the U.S. can offer. Or Canada, for that matter. So it's not just the miles because you can make that journey a couple of days before and settle down. But playing on the East Coast is very different from playing on the West Coast. It's very different from playing in Canada. And then Mexico is an issue all on its own. Having to play in those different circumstances, I think, provides all sorts of conundrums that I don't think many World Cups have had to deal with.
30:51Frank Leboeuf:Whether you're dealing, again, not just the different temperatures, but some stadiums are enclosed. There is just so much to this tournament in the U.S. that I think distinguishes it from any other beforehand. We're going to talk about some more locations for the World Cup next year later on in the show. But right now, let's pivot and talk about some club football, shall we? The MLS Cup, Inter-Miami going up against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Whitecaps, some heavy hitters in this one, and none heavier than Lionel Messi, who we just saw there eight minutes in. Tadeo Allende there with the ball over the top.
31:26He looks to square it. Didier Ocampo, though, with the own goal that gives Inter-Miami the lead.
31:34Frank Leboeuf:And it's Lionel Messi with the ball over the top to Allende. He would have a hand in so much. That transpired during the course of this game. Miami got the start that they were looking for. Into the second half now. Vancouver looking for an equalizer, and they got it. Do we talk about the goalkeeper, Shaq? No, no, no. We keep silence. No, generally we don't. Generally we don't around here. Good shot. Yeah, okay, all right. 1-1 into Miami needing something a little special. But Vancouver with a huge chance there, Shaq. And we were seeing that and he knows he missed a big chance. Unlucky by Sabi here.
32:06Frank Leboeuf:This is a really good run, really good shot. Actually had an earlier opportunity that came in at an awkward height. But that was well executed. Doesn't come much closer. Well, talk about connection. Besties in real life. Besties on the pitch. Messi winning the ball back, serving it up to Rodrigo De Paul, who reclaims Inter Miami's lead. Yeah, very clever assist from Lionel Messi and De Paul finishing the job. Javier Mascherano loving that. And so is Sir David Beckham, of course. And guess what? He's going to love a lot more of what he's about to see here. into injury time. Messi finding Allende in a way only Messi really can do.
32:45He puts it in the back of the net and Inter-Miami 3-1 and the cup is theirs.
32:54Well this is their third title and no doubt that a lot of the success that Inter-Miami has experienced over the last few seasons is down to one man and one man alone. And I say that with a grain of salt, Xhaka, but the truth is another title for Lionel Messi. Inter Miami looking like heavyweights here in North America and it has to be down to the I want to say small Argentine but big in stature.
33:19Frank Leboeuf:Well not just small Argentine 38 year old Argentine who is has dominated this league in so many ways dominated this final yet again. You try to set up a game plan to play up against Lionel Messi because you know the threat that he possesses and while he's not on the score sheet all three goals he is heavily involved with OK, the first is a known goal, but it was his ball, his control in tight space that sets Allende away. And that is the challenge with playing up against Lionel Messi. What do you do to stop him? You deny him space in the box. He just drops deep and passes you to death. And that's the issue here.
33:58Frank Leboeuf:And again, without question, we can't debate whether he's been the greatest of all time. more and more he's showing that nobody over the course of a career has held this kind of level that he has had and consistently. We can make what we want about this being MLS and the standard and drug comparisons, but he's 38 years old and he is absolutely bossing this league. You know what they say, that mortals make plans and God laughs at them? Well, I think opposing teams make plans and Lionel Messi laughs at them. All right, well, we talk a lot more about this on Football Americas. We dropped not one, not two, but three fresh episodes for you talking all about the World Cup draw as well as USA, Canada, and Mexico's group.
34:43Coming up next, we're going to talk about another rare slip-up for Arsenal in the Premier League.

36:34Real Betis hosted Barcelona today down in Sevilla and it was Hansi Flick's men who came out on top. Eight goals in this game, but Barca get all three points. A hat-trick from Ferran Torres was a highlight of it for the Catalan Giants. And now they are still at the top of the La Liga standings. Four points ahead of Real Madrid who play tomorrow. Luis Garcia, former Barca man himself, is joining us. Luis, thoughts on this win from Hansi Flixman? The win and not much more. I think the first 45 was good enough. It is the third time that this Barcelona side conceded early on the game. He has to do a comeback.
37:13I think it was a good reaction once again. And we saw today a different shape. We saw Rooney on the right side. LaMilla Mal for the first time playing as a playmaker, as a number 10 behind Ferran Torres. He did a good job. No touching much the left side, but most of the time was leaning on the right side. But enough to score a goal, to make an assist, and to give the three points to Barcelona. That again, when Hans Flick decided to start rotating the second half to give some rest to the likes of Pedri, players that needed to be rested because they're going to play against Central de Frankfurt on Wednesday, the team just got chaotic.
37:49And then you start breaking into pieces, transitions, and then Real Betis used to score another two goals. But Barcelona could have scored on two one-on-one situations, Rashford and Rooney, another two more goals. But in the end, good three points to stay at the top of the table and keep this momentum. Well, Spain, like the rest of us, were definitely all tuning into the World Cup draw that took place yesterday. And no doubt that the Spanish are considered as one of, if not the favorites, to take home the trophy next year. This is a look at some of the back pages just reacting to Spain's group.
38:22And a lot of them saying that it's not just a manageable group for La Furia Roja, but it's actually an easy group for them. Let's have a look at Spain's schedule and who they were drawn with. Cap Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay. They're going to start things off on June 15th against Cape Verde. That's in Atlanta. They stay in Atlanta against Saudi Arabia on June 21st. and then they travel to Guadalajara in Mexico for their final group game against Uruguay. Gab Marcotti is joining us. Gab, just looking at all those back pages, it seems like the European champions would feel very comfortable with their group.
39:01What do you think they'll feel about the schedule?
39:07Well, you think there's no such thing as overconfidence, maybe forgetting a little bit. that I'm pretty sure the current world champions were beaten by Saudi Arabia last time around in Qatar. But look, you know, if you're talking about on paper, that's the situation you're in. Guadalajara, oh, travel, going to Mexico. I don't think it's a big deal. They could have certainly qualification. You would expect them to have it wrapped up. Three points will get you there. Four points will get you there. six points, you'll probably wrap up the group. So in that sense, they don't have too much to worry about.
39:47Yeah, they don't have too much. All right, so we'll just end it there then. Back to club football. La Liga is back on ESPN Deportes and ESPN does tomorrow. Real Madrid going up against Celta de Vigo. 3 p.m. Eastern time is kickoff. When we come back, though, we're talking Bayern Munich because this man, yet again, another hat trick.
40:14Stuttgart hosted Bayern Munich in Bundesliga action today. Harry Kane starting on the bench for Bayern, but he was eventually brought on and made all the difference, scoring a second-half hat-trick as Bayern took all three points in a 5-0 win. Our Archie Rintut managed to catch up with Vincent Kompany after the game. I look at the way that you've been able to use your squads. have you changed the way that you've done that a bit this season? Did you look at the way that you were doing that and think you need to adjust the approach or is this just you're playing the cards that you have? I don't know, but every decision...
40:49Look, of course you have a dose of gut feeling that you have as a coach and you have to bring it in but I'm also driven by rationality.
40:59Frank Leboeuf:So there's a rational reason why I make those changes. It's not too emotional. It's mainly because, you know, last year, whenever we've had to rely on the squad, the team played well. I've never had a disappointing performance. I've had disappointing results. But the team has always been fighting with anyone. And so you get into your second season and you try and reflect on what you learned from the season before. The biggest thing is to have the squad fit for the important moments. And for that reason, we'll share. We'll share the load, but we'll also share the consequences. If it doesn't work out one day, then it is what it is.
41:38But the main thing is the guys are fit, and they're all able to help each other when needed. It's a thank you. Thank you. Well, Bayern Munich got the job done, but there's plenty more Bundesliga action. Here are the fixtures coming your way on Sunday. Welcome back to ESPN FC. We've talked about a couple of the nations that will be at the World Cup next year. and look at Brazil's group and schedule. First, it's up against Morocco, then Haiti. But get this, they have Scotland in Miami on June 24th. And there's going to be a lot of hot and possibly red Scots out there. I don't think they're going to be tailgating, do you think?
42:17Frank Leboeuf:Stevie will be our touchline reporter in Miami. Stevie can barely survive when we put the heater to 70. And that's right here. That's it for this edition of ESPN FC. We'll be back again on ESPN Plus tomorrow, and we hope to see you then.
42:43All right, welcome into Extra Time. Alexis here with Frank looking so dapper with his Pep Guardiola role. Who did it first, you or Pep? Frank. Sean Connery. Oh, that's my date. Frank did it before Sean Connery. I'm sorry, it's not Pep Guardiola.
43:00Frank Leboeuf:My reference is Sean Connery. I remember Sean Connery saying man, I'm Frank LaBeouf. And Sean Connery, one of the greatest Scotsmen that the world has ever given up. And he didn't have any problem with the hit. No, he didn't have any problem with the hit. Because he shot with a move. Retired. He shot with a move in Jamaica. You said Sean Connery is the greatest Scotsman. Give him Sir Alex Ferguson. Sean Connery is my first Scottish love. No, no, no. And your affinity to all things Manchester United, which we've been discussing all day long. I knew Shaka was going to bring this up. Discuss it all day long.
43:40Frank Leboeuf:Caught me a little bit by surprise, Alexis. Carry on. I don't mean to interrupt. He's upset because I was rooting for Denmark to get to the World Cup because of Rasmus Hoylund, who I thought has found good form with Napoli, as all Man United players seem to do once they leave Man United. Speaking of our favourite Scotsman, And Don Hutchison is still here with us. Are you going to eat meat? What? Did I just hear you say you were rooting for Denmark? No, hang on. Not over Scotland, Don. I was rooting for Denmark to get through their playoffs. To then make it there. Because Rasmus Hojland, he's one of our own.
44:17There you go. Come on, Don. You know me better than that. He's back in Denmark. I'm the unofficial member of that Tartan army all day, every day. Scotland the Brave. Right, let's start with the first question. With the recent Salah news, has there ever been a quicker downfall for a champion team? Don, what do you think? I mean, the comments, it's bombshell comments because it's awful from Mo Salah to think that he might be bigger than Liverpool Football Club. It's OK to have a discussion and have an argument with a manager. He's saying he's got no relationship. That's quite normal. It's a bit of a bombshell statement, but that's quite normal.
44:53the fact that he's gone after the football club is awful and self-indulgent and the worst thing that he's done now after saying it tonight before Liverpool play Inter Milan and the Champions League this week this story now is going to rumble and rumble for days because what does Arnazolat do now does he even take him to San Siro does he take him to to Italy and put him in the squad against Inter Milan does he leave him behind that's going to keep cause even more drama does he put him on the bench again for the fourth time does he buckle a little bit and plays Mo Salah it's it's left on a slot in a horrible position I really think that uh Salah is sending a message if he wanted to stay he would have never come out with a with a with a comment like that I think you think mentally he's already he's trying to to find a way out but this is Mo Salah we're talking about we know as he said it himself it might be good you know Alexis go on Don it might be good you know it might be good for Liverpool because probably what they want now is probably a little bit of closure on Mo Salah and because his form has dipped and by the way he's not the only one.
45:55This is a toxic closure Don. This is an ugly way to end with one of your club legends. Well yeah but think of this right. If Mo Salah's form dipped he's got a two year contract and let's just say his form dipped a little bit and he was on the slide a little bit and his legs were starting to go. I don't think they are but let's just say his performances were on the downslope but his fitness wasn't quite there, then you're carrying a player for 400 grand a week for two years. It might be a case where you go you've been one of Liverpool's greatest ever footballers. We're going to move you on in January.
46:28You've been amazing for us. We've been amazing for you. We can get some closure and buy new players for Liverpool to kick on because they're in a state at the moment with Mo Salah or not. Toxic ending and I know a thing or two about toxic endings.
46:43Frank Leboeuf:I don't think anybody could comment on that at all. But to that point, we're just a few months gone. Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving and the way that was received. And he didn't say anything. And he's born and bred. He just let his contract run down and left without any kind of saying anything negative about the football club. So you then wonder, what is a good ending? How do you bring things to a good close? Somebody's always upset. You know, either the player isn't quite ready to leave yet or the club aren't ready for that player to move on. So it's part of the job that these endings are never quite as clean as you would like them to be.
47:25Frank Leboeuf:But I'm with Don on this. I mean, given the money that he's carrying, and let's be honest, his performances this season haven't warranted that. To his point, what he's done in the past has been great. Were you only good as your last game? We were joking off air. If that were a factor, Kenny Dalglish would still be starting. It would be Kenny Dalglish and Kevin Keegan up front. That's not that you earn that position week by week. And I'm sorry, I love Mo Salah, but I just think he's gone on the wrong avenue. That's the hardest thing for football players is to know when to drop a little bit in your career when it's almost the end.
48:00And I always say it's better to show envy than pity. and when you leave, it would have been fantastic to feel that you are missed at Liverpool and go to Saudi Arabia, maybe, because he did the job, because he has been fantastic and, yeah, sorry, it's time to go for me. I remember Michel Platini retiring at 32 years old when everybody was expecting him to play two more years, but he said, oh, I'm done. Thank you very much. And when you feel regrets around you, it's good. It's better for a football player. All right, we'll see exactly how this toxic relationship may end. Next question. Has Unai Emery been the best manager in the Premier League this season?
48:42No goals and no wins in their first four matches and now sitting third in the table. For me, as I explained during the show, it didn't change the players. It didn't change any tactic and the way that he's playing. It changed the mentality of the players from being bad at the beginning of the season to where they were last season and the good season that they had. And that's the credit I want to give to Inay Emery. And it showed all the strength that he had in the group and in the dressing room. So, yeah, I agree. He's been the best manager so far. I would say pound for pound.
49:19Frank Leboeuf:In that, in that, I guess pound is the right freezing here. When you look at the money that Arsenal spend, that Manchester City spend, that Aston Villa, but Liverpool, we don't have that conversation, but Aston Villa have been under PSR regulations and still they're competitive. So again, pound for pound probably right free. Pun intended. Don, what's the U? Unai Emery, best manager in the Premier League right now on form? Yeah, I think so. I mean, they're nine wins and ten, but not just that. I think when you think of the forward players that they've lost, they've lost Moussa Diaby to Saudi, they've lost Leon Bailey, they've lost John Duran, they've lost Marcus Rashford, they've lost Asensio.
49:59So they've lost so many players And that's why I think at the very start of the season, when they couldn't buy a win for the first four or five games, and everything was very much doom and gloom, they'd lost loads of forward players, wide players, goals. And you just think, Unai Emery's the perfect man to see them through this, because he was very frustrated at the start. Since then, he's got them all together. They're playing great football. The mood is incredibly high. They're winning games for fun. They're sitting in third. As it stands, technically, they're in a title race. what a job he's done.
50:28I think he's, as I said before, I think when it comes to watching a game, smelling the game and making substitutions, he is one of the very best. So, Matthew Swatchwell is one of your own. He's one of our own. Oh, my God. He's always going to be one of our own. Stop it. Born and bred and made in Manchester. Anyways, the right side. Next question is for Don and it's still about Unai Emery. Don, if Unai Emery got the same financial backing and patience of the board that Mikel Arteta got, over the six years period, would he have already won a Premier League trophy with Arsenal by now? I don't think so.
51:08I think it's one of them where you can look at it and you go, yeah, maybe, maybe. But don't forget, City and Liverpool in that period were frightening. I mean, City and Liverpool in that period were hitting 100 points. I mean, let's not forget, you know, to win the league in that sort of City-Liverpool dominance, you have to hit between 98 and 100 points. So probably not is the answer to the question. Anyone else think the same? I agree. I agree. I think it's when you say money talks. Yeah. But there are other aspects of the game that you have to sort out. And Arsenal needed that time to grow up and to finally be able to be in the title race.
51:47Frank Leboeuf:I think Unai Emery has always been a better manager than maybe he's been given credit for. Yeah. Listen, at PSG, I thought that was a toxic please. There were many a manager went in there and couldn't get it right. But the Lewis Enrique comes in and does that. So, find out how to judge. And then, succeeding. Succeeding Arsene Wenger at Arsenal. Manchester United still haven't fully replaced, or properly replaced, have them seriously competitive since Alex Ferguson. Have a will. Look how difficult the task that has proved. Look how difficult the task that has proved. I'm just saying, so to come in after a legendary manager, as he did at Arsenal, that's a tough one.
52:28Frank Leboeuf:And I thought he actually did better than, I think many people think, if you go back and look at his record and how Arsenal did, it was actually better than many people give him credit for. So it's good to see him doing as he did with Villa. And let's remember where Villa were when he took over after Steve Gerrard. To where they are now, I think it's great that people are appreciating Unai Emery's brilliance as a football match. Well, don't forget what he did in Spain, you know. Yeah, of course. He did a couple of times in the Europa League. But even that, people were just coming, yeah, well, okay, it's Europa League, you know, and kind of dismissed it.
53:01Frank Leboeuf:You know, but I think people are really sitting up and taking notice with the job that he continues to do with Aston Villa under difficult circumstances, given the spending of those around him. That's right. Give Unai his flowers. Quality. Speaking of quality, or we will see. Next question. Did Xavi Simons do anything today to improve your opinion of him in the Premier League, Don? He scored one game. One game and he's already in a statement. Yeah. Well, come on. Well, this is a break. Don, go ahead. Yeah, but Frank's right. No, no, no, but Frank's right. We get carried away when we see someone play well in one game.
53:34We go, yeah, he's back. Or that's why justified spending the money. Now what you want to see from Xabi Simons is, right, that's the levels. You've shown us your levels. Can you stay there? Can you stay consistent? And we'll judge you after a couple of weeks, stroke a month, and we'll judge you from now at the end of the season. But that's the bar. You've set your own bar, because he's a talented young player. Now keep it up.
53:57Frank Leboeuf:I fully agree. No, to answer the question exactly as it's freezed. Yes, he did. He scored. But I'm an assist. I had an assist. Yeah, your mic. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Supporting. Producer keeps screening. But he's not had anything to share about recently, so we have to give Mike a moment. We're talking about life. We're talking about life. Life and in football. He has to cheer more than Manchester United. He does cheer more than Manchester United. I think he won something against Manchester United. I know, but we don't want to see us stressed out, Mike. Our Mike gets stressed out a lot, so he's happy that Xavi Simons did something today.
54:31Frank Leboeuf:Yes, he did something, but now to the point that the boys are making is doing something for one game is not enough to fully change an opinion. Now you have a goal and an assist for the next 12 weeks. There we have a different conversation. Our producer Mike is stressed out now because he hates when we talk about him out in the open. We love you, Mike. Too late. He was shouting, you know. He was shouting. He's been shouting out here and said, Let me, and I sit. He's blushing. He's turning red. Tell everybody, make sure to tell everybody. He said, let's move on. Final question is for our Frank Labeouf because he's the only one that can answer it here.
55:11Frank, how heavy is a World Cup trophy? I think it's around 10 pounds of gold. Oh, wow. So it's quite heavy. It's quite heavy, yeah, but it's, you know. But not for a big man like you. No, but when you win. That's about 10 pounds. If it's 10 pounds of gold, then it's 10 pounds, isn't it? That's 10 pounds. Right, okay. Yeah, but 10 pounds of metal is less, I mean, it's appreciated. But you know what? It looks like very light when you win. Okay, yeah, yeah. Because you're just floating. Oh, my God. It's like a baby. Alexis, when you look at what Frank's got on tonight, that lovely blazer and a lovely grey polo neck, I think he's missed a trick.
55:54He should have had a little blazer with a little World Cup dangling just on his chest. You wore that yesterday. Magnificent. I have a little World Cup. You wore that yesterday, Don. You wore that yesterday. No, the thing is... Yeah, you wore that yesterday. It's like the jacket that you have. You don't have to show where it comes from. You know it's there, it's inside. And my workup is in my heart.
56:21Frank Leboeuf:Don, don, did you see the start of the show? Don, did you see the start? Alexa starts off with, to my left, we've got Frank LeBeau, French international, a worker winner in 1998. He started the final. And down the far end, we've got that tallish fella. That guy, that guy. That tall guy down there. No, no, no, no. Oh, man. I gave Shaka his flowers. That's so unfair. We've got him. As a fellow West Indian. Welcome winner. And down there, we've got him. As a fellow West Indian. Shaka is unfair. We talk about include shit. Shaka stopped Zlatan from scoring. I think you see, what was it? Like six or seven saves, Shaka?
