In short
ESPN FC episode focused on La Liga opening-week storylines, especially Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez transfer uncertainty, plus Barcelona’s Rodri signing, Real Madrid’s Jose Mourinho return, and debate over a late Sevilla vs Rio penalty. It also includes discussion of ESPN’s 2026 FC 100 player rankings and Premier League title predictions.
Guests (and backgrounds)
Kay Murray and Alejandro Moreno host. Guest analysts include Alex Kirkland (reporting/coverage, e.g., Atleti vs Malaga), Franklin Buff, and Alex Kirkland; plus Frank Leboeuf and others appear in later segments (Extra Time). The episode also features references to Steven Nicol and Sid/coach Benyat San Jose (post-match quote).
Key claims
Simeone says Alvarez is “crystal clear” to stay and is not fit for Malaga; Alvarez still wants Barcelona and has said he won’t play vs Malaga. Atletico can rely on contract terms. Rodri’s Barca move is framed as a title-race game-changer despite injury concerns. Mourinho’s behind-closed-doors presentation is debated as attention-seeking vs “low profile.” The Sevilla penalty is argued as likely not a penalty (no contact).
Notable examples
Alvarez wanting Barcelona; Simeone calling him Atletico’s best attacking player; Rodri’s back surgery “minor” and fit claim; Mourinho’s training since last month; Sevilla’s 94th-minute penalty incident; FC 100 list arguments (e.g., David Raya, Desiree Douay, Rodri ranking).

0:34Dan Thomas:Hello and welcome into the latest edition of ESPN FC. Kay Murray and Alejandro Moreno here in the studio. La Liga is underway. In fact, this man is off to Spain tomorrow to see Real Madrid and Barcelona's opening games. But tomorrow we'll get to see Atleti against Malaga. This is all very interesting because of the speculation surrounding the future of Julian Alvarez right now. It's something that Diego Simeone addressed today in the presser. Julian Alvarez? Well, I believe Miguel Angel Gilmarín is the club's owner. He spoke very emphatically. It's like a court proceeding. There's no room for ambiguity.
1:10So I think what he expressed is crystal clear. From a sporting perspective, we act by trying to look after the person and the player, waiting for him to be in the condition we deem necessary so he can continue to uphold his reputation, the player he is, and the contribution he has made to us. Therefore, we don't view him as being in the right condition to play or participate in this match. I hope that over the next four days we make it a bit more progress and, well, get closer to where he wants to be.
1:43Dan Thomas:Oh, this is all very interesting. Franklin Buff and Alex Kirkland joining us now. Alex, we've heard about these face-to-face talks between Julian Alvarez and Diego Simeone. We know that he's been Barcelona's main target this summer, but it would appear that he's not going anywhere right now. Yeah, Simeone's saying the situation is crystal clear. I'm not sure it is. It doesn't feel crystal clear to me. And to be honest, Adetico's kind of whole project this season doesn't feel clear to me either because, in part, because of this uncertainty about Julian. I think until the window's closed, whatever Simeone says, we won't feel absolutely sure that Julian is staying.
2:20It's true that the club CEO came out and said, we won't sell him, not even for 200 million euros. As you say, Simeone and Julian spoke before training last week and tried to clear the air, basically. Julian still saying, I want to go. Simeone saying, as long as he's one of my players, I'll treat you the same. I'm not going to leave you out, anything like that. And Simeone saying today, again, he's our best player. He's our best attacking player. I want to build a team around him. I don't want him to leave. But it's difficult and it's an awkward situation because Julian Alvarez made his position very, very clear in public during the World Cup saying he wants to go.
2:58He's not going to be involved in this game against Malaga on Wednesday. He's going to avoid the judgment of the Atletico crowds and the fans in that game, but he can't avoid that for long. And the fans, I think, understandably, aren't best pleased about one of their franchise players saying that he wants to join Barcelona. Like I say, Signore says it's crystal clear. It doesn't necessarily feel that way to me.
3:20Dan Thomas:Yeah, one thing that feels crystal clear, because he's actually said it, is that Julian Alvarez wants to go to Barcelona and doesn't want to stay at Athleti. You know when our colleague, our beloved colleague, Steven Nicol, is cleaning his glasses all the time? You're right. He does this, and we're just kind of peeling back the curtain, he does this ahead of every show. The reason he does this is because whatever he's seen through his glasses is certainly not crystal clear. I'm only saying this to paint the picture that whatever Simeone is considering to be crystal clear is the equivalent of Stevie Nichols' glasses.
3:54It's not clear. You can't really see through it. I think the situation is only going to get more complex. It's going to get more complicated for both Simeone, the player, the club, club president, club owner, all of it. Everybody is going to have a difficult time here because Julian Alvarez has already played his cards. He's already said his part. And so the fans' reaction, and Alex just mentioned that, is going to be one of negativity, and understandably so. But do you think that's going to make Julian Alvarez want to stay? Do you think that he's going to be like, oh, you know what, I really enjoy being booed all the time at my home stadium.
4:33Let's stay here. This is fun. No, that's only going to make the situation, again, more difficult to deal with. It's going to be a daily conversation. It's going to be a daily question. It's going to be a daily thing for everybody involved. And eventually that pushes you to an outcome. And the outcome would be for Julián Alvarez to believe in Atlético Madrid. But the one big thing that everybody has to deal with, whether they like it or not, is that there is a contract in place. And when there is a contract in place, I guess Atlético Madrid can take the position of saying, you're not going anywhere, Julián Alvarez.
5:05Even if you're happy, unhappy, we don't care. You're playing for us.
5:08Dan Thomas:It's not great, though, is it, Frank, when you've got an unhappy player having to play for you and not wanting to be there? Of course. It's even worse than that. And you all know that if a player wants to go, you have to let him go because he might not be the player you have known. He might put some mess in the dressing room by his attitude. And he will never give what you expect him to give. I've seen him given. given. So it's a one-way traffic. Let him go because it's not going to work. For you, and Varis, even if he stays, you know, we had the experience of Griezmann going to Barcelona, not working very well and going back, being booed and finishing as a legend of Atletico Madrid.
5:56So maybe it's some light at the end of the tunnel for you, and Varis, if he has to stay. But clearly, what is crystal clear for me is Alvarez has to go. Otherwise, you won't have the Alvarez that you used to have and it won't be effective and you're going to waste money that you could have gotten with the transfer.
6:19Dan Thomas:Meanwhile, one player who has made it to Barcelona is Rodri. He's arrived in Barcelona. His official presentation underway. And we will be seeing him in the colours of Barca in the coming season. And there we go, some scenes today with club president Joanne Laporta. He's actually said after recently undergoing back surgery that he's fit and ready to play, Alex. Yeah, that's surprising to me, Kay, because all the reporting had been that he might be out for a few weeks and wouldn't be ready for the start of the season. As you say, he's contradicted that. He said, I'm ready to go. It was a minor procedure, but still we thought he'd be out for a few weeks.
6:56I think his signing is massive for Barca. I think it's a potential game changer in terms of the title race. I think it's a big deal for Barca. I think it's a huge deal for Real Madrid that he hasn't gone there. It's a double whammy, really, for Barca, what they gain and what their biggest rivals lose. There are questions about exactly where Rodri fits in, about how he sort of combines with Petri. That hasn't always been a great partnership for Spain at international level. Let's see if it can be different at club level. But I think it's really exciting, and it's such a big statement as well that he chose Barca.
7:26Dan Thomas:So let me stick with you a minute, Alex, because I heard at the beginning of the season you picked Real Madrid to win the title but the way you're talking now I'm not too sure if you're going to change your mind now that Rodri's gone to Barca Do you know what Kate? I made that prediction when we all thought Rodri was going to Real Madrid and I feel like I've kind of got to stick with it now even though the circumstances have changed I think it's going to be tight I think it's going to be competitive I think Madrid have made some really good signings I think Cucurea is a great signing I think a few of the players potentially are really exciting additions you know a lot we don't know exactly about how it's going to work and Diomande is very very exciting as well I think they've improved the squad significantly but I think Rodri was the one for me so yeah with him I thought Madrid were champions without him and with him going to Barcelona I'm not so sure but I've made my bets I think so I've got to lie with it I can't I can't change my mind now that's very stubborn it reminds me of somebody during the World Cup who picked Spain in the beginning and then a few things didn't go Spain's way but in the end he stuck with it and he was right lally moreno that guy's a genius genius uh look um wait when you think about rodri and what you saw from him in the world cup then you go yeah like that if you're barcelona if you think about rodri and what he was with manchester city last season you kind of go oh i i don't quite see it now sustaining level of play for rodri right now in his career seems to be a problem.
8:53And his body obviously betraying him is also a problem. Now, I don't know how there is minor back surgery. I don't know how that works. If you have back surgery, I don't think it's minor, right? As it pertains to what he can do for Barcelona, and it's something I mentioned yesterday, I think it frees up Pedri to go and join in the attack. He would play sort of this deeper role midfield last season, and he did so very well, but it limited his impact in the final third. I also think, though, if you're Barcelona and you're thinking about what were your areas of need, I didn't feel like that was a particular area of need.
9:33Because you have the combo package of Pedri and Frankie de Jong, and beyond that, you have Marc Bernal, who also played very well for Barcelona. And you're thinking, well, you have enough numbers in that part of the field. And in terms of midfielders ahead of them, then you have Fermín López and Dani Olmoño. It seems to be crowded, that part of the field for Barcelona. So I don't know that that would have been my priority, given the fact that you don't have a striker! You don't have a striker. And that's still the reality for the club.
10:03Dan Thomas:What do you think of Alex's stubbornness here? Do you applaud it? Well, I appreciate stubbornness as long as he's right. If he's wrong, then stubbornness borders on silliness. OK, it's a good point that Ale brought up, Frank, in the fact that over the last two years, we have seen these injury setbacks with Rodri. This is a 30-year-old player. It's a Ballon d 'Or winner. It's a World Cup winner. But there have been injury issues. Yeah, that's the issue that I have with the signing for 76.5 million euros for Rodri. It's because it's a speculation. Therefore, it's quite abstract where you don't really know where you go with him.
10:44Yes, I'm 100 % with Ali Moreno. You know how I commit now, Ali? Yes, I like that, Frank. I like it. Yeah, thank you. So I'm 100 % with Ali in the fact that if we have the Rodri before his injury or during the walker, yes, yes, yes. If it's the Rodri for the season with Manchester City, I have that too. And that would be sad because Rodri is such a fantastic player. I really hope he's going to do very well for Barcelona. And I agree with the change of opinion from Alex, Alexi, because really, really, Rodri was an X factor. And if he's in his best form, best fitness, playing for Barcelona, yeah, Barcelona are the favorites.
11:37Yeah, there we go. Here's the thing. There was no change of opinion by Alex. No. No, no. He stubbornly...
11:42Dan Thomas:I feel like inside there might be. I know. I know, but then he can't quite get himself to that point. No, because he's a man of principles. But realities have changed. The facts have changed. Yeah, exactly. When facts change, opinions do, Alex. It is your last chance. No, I'm sticking with it. I'm sorry, guys. I'm not going to change my mind. As much as logic might fly in the face of it, and I'll undoubtedly be free from wrong, I'm sticking with Real Madrid. All right. And one person who's sticking with Real Madrid is Jose Mourinho. Jose Mourinho is back at Real Madrid we got to see his official presentation today well not many did just the cameras because the media weren't allowed into this one and he's been training the team since last month so why did it happen today Alex?
12:27Yeah we've been waiting and waiting not just for Jose Mourinho to be presented but for all the new signings presented as well and the clock's been ticking time's been running out we've got to this week the last week before the season starts and we think well hang on how are they going to do all this and the answer is they're not really They're going to do these presentations, but as you say, it's not really a presentation because it's behind closed doors. There are no fans. Gone are the days of a new signing at the Bernabeu, kicking balls into the crowd. The media aren't there. Poor old us journos.
12:55And there's no press conference or anything like that. It's simply a photo session, really. And that's what they can do. Not just for Mourinho, we understand, but for the players, you know, Bernardo Silva and Diomande and Cucurea and all the rest. The same thing's going to happen, the same format over the next few days. It's a bit of a formality. And like you say, Mourinho's been working at Val de Bebas, at the training ground, for weeks now. So we understand, I mean, a lot of people are reporting that basically Mourinho wants this, a low profile. He didn't want a big presentation, a big event, didn't want to be, you know, making a big deal of it.
13:23He's basically, he's already at work and he wants to treat it as quite matter-of-factly, you know, he's at work and that's it.
13:29Dan Thomas:Do you buy that? Okay. 100 % no, I don't buy that. No, I do not. that Jose Mourinho doesn't want the attention, then why do you come back to Real Madrid? If you wanted to work in the background, if you were about the development of the player, the youth, if you were about the love for the game, why are you coming back to Real Madrid? Who would turn down coming back to Real Madrid? Well, I'm just... Yeah, but don't tell me that this is not a way of being in front of the cameras. That because you don't have a press conference to present Jose Mourinho, that Jose Mourinho doesn't like the cameras.
14:03I'm sorry. If you turn on Netflix right now, who has a documentary out? It's Mourinho in front of the cameras. So don't tell me the guy doesn't like the cameras and he just wants to be low profile. That doesn't match. In fact, that is boring. Jose Mourinho being back in La Liga is interesting for, among many other reasons, is the fact that he is going to be in front of the cameras and he is going to tell us something that is going to be interesting. I don't want boring Jose Mourinho. That doesn't work. Doesn't work for Real Madrid. It doesn't work for me. It doesn't work for us. It doesn't work for anybody.
14:35It doesn't work for him, for that matter.
14:37Dan Thomas:Yes, he's just waiting for those press conferences. That's when we know he's going to bring it. But he's just a humble guy like you, Frank. What?
14:47Yes, 200%. More than me. Now, the thing is, you know, what is his nickname? I forgot. Oh, the special one. How do you become the special one? Not being behind the curtain. no being in the front page being everywhere being under the light because he loves that and he's been very effective about that but I'm with Ali the guy wants to be in the front page he wants to be there he wants everybody to see what he does and hopefully he does good so nothing has changed and I don't understand why they did that doesn't make any sense because he's been working with the players for like a month so it was useless
15:28Dan Thomas:yeah can't wait for this season coming off with Real Madrid with Jose Mourinho back in the dugout. However, the season is underway, and what a bang it got off with this game between Sevilla and Rio. As you can see, the time on the clock here, 94th minute. It is a penalty at the death for Sevilla. This one would stand. Robbie, you're drawing the foul. Lejeune at fault, in inverted commas, that would appear, and Ali's reaction in his voice there. I know I die when I see one. I know I die when I see one. the hesitation as he tries to go down or as he goes down, let me just tell you, we teach that on Thursdays at the diving camp.
16:08Dan Thomas:Peke stepped up, scored it. After the game, Sid caught up with the Rio coach, Benyat San Jose, and this is what he had to say about that penalty. Is it a penalty? I'm not too sure. I think if the referee would have gone back and reviewed it on his own, I think he would have changed the decision because for me, he doesn't touch him. Frank, where do you stand on this penalty? I don't know. Really, I don't know. On the side, when we see the players in parallel situations, for me, there is no contact. So at first, I would say no. From there, it's impossible to see. And after, we're going to see that the second replay here, no touch for me.
16:54On the other one, again, no touch. but the last one either the striker plays it so well here so well that I could say there is a touch so here as well maybe there is a touch on his right foot but it's very hard and I have sympathy for the referee but because I'm not sure I would have said no penalty
17:18Dan Thomas:Yeah, this is their new Scottish striker Robbie, you're... Ale's got his hand on Yeah, yeah Your Honour, please, if I may let's assume that there was a touch the touch would have been down low on his left foot right that's where the touch would have been if indeed there was a touch there wasn't but if indeed there was it would have been there this man went down holding not his left ankle not his left knee but his right knee his right knee his right knee there certainly wasn't any touch on the right knee and this guy's holding his right knee. No, I know a dive when I see one and I feel it in my heart.
18:02You see, Ali, you are an expert and I see how you are an expert because that I didn't see. And I agree with you. I thought it was his right foot, but not his right knee. So because he's touching his right knee, I'm with Ali 100 % now. It's not a penalty because you don't touch your knee if you have a tackle like that. You touch your foot. Well done, Ali. Really well done. But you have to be a striker to know that because you know how to deal with that.
18:29Dan Thomas:Has this been some of the discourse that we're seeing in Spain, Alex, after this decision? Do you know what, Kate? It's funny. This hasn't got much attention at all here in Spain. I'll tell you why. Unfortunately, the way things are here, the way the mass media works here, if it's not Real Madrid, it's not Barcelona. And of course, neither of those two sides were involved in La Liga action this weekend on opening weekend. It doesn't get talked about. There's no scandal. There's no drama. There's no endless analysis. It just, because it was Rio against Sevilla, it just hasn't been talked about.
19:00So, yeah, I agree that it's really soft. But has this been front page news? No, no, it hasn't.
19:05Dan Thomas:There was a lot of drama in that game, and we hope for a lot more drama coming up this season in La Liga. As we mentioned, Atleti is coming up against Malaga tomorrow, 3 p.m. Eastern. Our Alex Kirkland will be there. Our coverage will begin at 2.30 p.m. Eastern. Check it out. I'm sure there'll be a lot more talk about Julian Alvarez. An Espanol take on Real Madrid. Well, a community cycling group. The thing about Facebook, you might find more than what you're looking for. From a browse to a bike ride, this summer, find more on Facebook.
20:48Dan Thomas:As you know, we love a list here at ESPN FC, especially at this time of the year. The 2026 FC 100 is out. It is the 10th annual edition, and these are some of the names. Remember, we go player by position. So we go position by position and pick the top 10 in each of those positions, and we even split the positions more than just defence, midfield and forwards. Now, I've never really known Frank to be as fired up as this. I saw some of the messages that he'd sent our producer. Let's just say they're not safe for work. Frank, why are you so angry at this list? First, I like the fact that we consider that there was the best player of each position, almost.

21:32Well, the wingers were combined, the centre-backs were combined, even the wingers on the offensive side with the midfielder. But everything was clear for me that you picked the best according to the position. Now I got the list. And I got the voter list. My first question was, who the hell were the voters? And I was answered that it was some journalists and some pendants and some pendants from our show. He refused to give me the names because he's not that type of guy. But I felt offended at some point when I saw some players like Vinicius Junior, for example. I saw, well, I have the list. But Dwayne or Lamin-Yamal before Desiree Dwayne.
22:24Desiree Dwayne, winner of the League One, winner of the Champions League, being so influential before Rafinha, who absolutely almost didn't play for the whole season. Vinicius Junior was appalling. Lionel Messi plays in the MLS. And Laminya Mal was injured a lot. So I'm sorry. I don't know why Desiree Douai is at the ninth position. I saw some of that. I saw Koundé being sixth, where he had such a hard season. OK, Frank, let me stop you there,
22:56Dan Thomas:because I want to stop on that Douai point. I want to get the thoughts of Ale on the point that he's angered that Douay is number nine in that list. Well, OK, I'm not I'm not going to focus on the city of Douay as much as Frank wants to get to that point. All I'm going to say is that it's one of the disclaimers in this article. And Frank, I'm one of the voters. And let me just tell you, I'm just as upset as you are because my voting is not reflected in what the final outcome was. And so I ask the same question. I ask the same question, who's voting for this? Because clearly, whoever is voting for this does not see the game anywhere near the way I see it.
23:34And there's a very heavy, dare I say, Premier League bias. Oh, oh, there's a Premier League bias in the voters behind this list, let me just tell you. The other thing I would say is, and the disclaimer in this article says, Well, look, we're not going to just value the World Cup and dismiss 60 games during the season. This is by their own admission that the World Cup is important, but cannot be as important or more important than the 60-game season. Okay, if that's the case, then Lionel Messi is as high as he is because we're assuming they paid attention to the World Cup. but by their own standards they're saying that the World Cup is not it.
24:19I'll go even further. Central midfielder, Rodri, who we just established. We just established that he had difficulties staying fit, that he had difficulties with Manchester City, that was not a very consistent performer, that had a great World Cup. Let me just tell you, then Rodri is above guys like Joao Neves and in particular, Pedri. That doesn't make sense. By your own standards, by your own admission, by your own disclaimer, at the very beginning of this article in which it says that the World Cup cannot outweigh the 60 games of a season, well, that's exactly what happened here. So you're contradicting yourself.
24:54And whoever voted for this is contradicting themselves and is not adhering to the very clear instructions that were given when we were voting for this. I have no idea how we get to the final list. And I have no idea how the voters see the way they see it. David Ray is not the best goalkeeper in the world. He's a great goalkeeper. He's not the best goalkeeper in the world. And yet there he is. Why? Let me just say, where does he play? Arsenal, where does he play? Premier League. He's not better than Thibaut Courtois. He's not. He's not. And some would argue, by the way, that he's not even the second or third best goalkeeper in Spain.
25:31In Spain. In Spain, so much so that Unai Simón plays ahead of him. Luis de la Fuente plays Unai Simón ahead of David Rayas. No one cares about the World Cup, Ale. Well, apparently not. Apparently not. In some ways they do and others don't.
25:48Dan Thomas:I think he's more angry than you, Frank. Safonov finishing 10th behind Big Ford, who played for Everton, who had nothing to do in the Champions League, who didn't have an impact for the World Cup, if it's so important, even if they say it's not important. How come Safonov can finish 10th behind so many names where, I don't understand. The player, we barely saw them. The guy won the Champions League, so I don't know why he's there. And you have some names like that, you see, and you wonder why it's like that, why it works like that, and why the borders went there. Ask us the question, because, well, you know, yes, I agree with Ali.
26:32You have some names, you really wonder why they are in the list.
26:37Dan Thomas:Frank didn't turn in his ballot by the way so I did yeah you did you still weren't happy even with that Alex let me go through a few of the pointers we've made is Dwey too low on the list at 9? I should say I'm another one of these voters who doesn't know what they're talking about by the way I voted but my ballot was requested before the World Cup so I couldn't even take the World Cup into account that's when we had to submit our ballots And by the way, of all the things to get annoyed about on this list, Ali, the idea that David Raya wasn't the best keeper in the world by miles last season, by absolutely miles, is baffling to me.
27:16Dway, I think, is there or thereabouts. I'm not that fussed. But yeah, the David Raya outrage, Ali, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It's entirely... And I'm an Aliga guy. I'm a Courtois guy. But last year... You're also an Arsenal guy. You're also an Arsenal guy. Yes. So there you go. Okay. So, again, I respect your opinion, Alex, as I always do. But there is some bias here. It's built-in bias.
27:41Dan Thomas:Alex, let me go to you on Rodri. Where are you on where Rodri sits on the list? Well, do you know what? When I saw the final list when it came out today, I was ready to go. How can Rodri only be in third place? I went back and looked at my vote before the World Cup, of course. I had him number eight before the World Cup. Because, of course, Rodri went into that World Cup with so many doubts. He comes out of the World Cup, kind of, you know, coronated once again as the best midfielder in the world. I think if he did it right now, if I voted right now, Rodri would be my number one off the back of the World Cup.
28:12But off the back of last season, going into the World Cup, I had him further down. So maybe, you know, sort of averaging out between the two, maybe third place is about right.
28:21Dan Thomas:OK, you're a centre forward. Look, I was... Technology is not my friend, right? I was about to pull up the article and read you line by line what they say about the World Cup. But the World Cup is just eight matches, and eight matches cannot equate to 60 matches. Fair enough. But if that's a standard, then how come it applies to some categories and it doesn't apply to others? And more so to the point, and this is something that Alex brought up, we voted for this ahead of the World Cup. And how are we publishing this post-World Cup having seen what we saw in the World Cup? You're putting us, the voters, in a really bad situation.
28:56So whoever publishes, give us a chance. Give us a real chance. Then allow us to vote post-World Cup, and then we can make up our minds. But you had us vote for this ahead of the World Cup. The World Cup happens. Now a bunch of things change, and we look like idiots.
29:10Dan Thomas:Frank, you want back in? The last point. Yeah, the last point is they say that injuries didn't really matter, and the player, even if he was injured, was judged according to what he did. I think it's unfair. We are talking about consistency. I mean, it's really hard to be consistent and to be at the top of the top, you know, for all season long when a player comes back, plays three months and his name may be fifth or fourth because he played good three months. I think it's a little bit unfair. And that's something we are fighting against where we want, again, to see consistency and name best player in the whole positions.
29:49They've been very good all season long. And what this article as well annoyed me a little bit, I would say.
29:57Dan Thomas:or a lot or a lot bit and you I just wanted to get to the center forwards with you in the list there how are you feeling about the center forward list look I'm okay I I'm not gonna make an argument against Harry Kane being the number one center forward in the world I'm not sure that Kylian Mbappe is a center forward but that's where he plays with Real Madrid and seems to play like that with France as well so I'm not the center forward list I I didn't have a big issue with to be honest with you. I think Kai Havers is way, way too high in this list. Kai Havers, and please, if the Arsenal guy in this conversation tells me that Kai Havers belongs in this top 10 forwards, are you kidding me?
30:36Are you joking with me? Again, Premier League bias, Arsenal bias, it doesn't make sense.
30:41Dan Thomas:Go on, Alex, I dare you. All I want to say is that my bosses who put together this list, I support you, I'm with you, it's a great list. Great stuff, well done. Frank, I saw that you were a little bit annoyed here. You said Eketike behind João Pedro. Who is behind Havertz? Joke. That's what I heard you said. Yes, that's a joke. Because Eketike, before his injury, was one of the best strikers. I mean, even his act couldn't fit in Liverpool because it wasn't good. But because Eketike was there. And Eketike had immediately, on the first game that he played, had an impact in Liverpool, for Liverpool.
31:18And I see him finishing behind João Pedro who played like kind of six months good and then disappeared. And then we see Kai Havertz, who is not even a forward, who barely scored goals. So because he scored important goals, that's fair, that's fair, he's seventh. Really, that was a joke for me. He shouldn't be in that list. He shouldn't be in that list. We're already dwelling on this a bit much. But Lionel Messi, being described as a wide attacker, He hasn't been a wide attacker in a decade or longer. He hasn't been a winger type player for at least a decade, if not longer. If you are defining him as a wide attacker, as a winger, then we are losing the game entirely.
32:06If you watch Lionel Messi play, you tell me he goes at wide and is taking people on in wide areas. Where he does the best work, both for Inter Miami and Argentina, more importantly. It's right in front of the back line and behind of the midfielders in a space of about 15 by 10. And that's where he does all his work or most of his work. That's where he breaks down. And then from there, he gets into the 18-yard box to go and score goals or create for somebody else. But don't tell me that you put him in the same category on the field as you do Vinny Jr. It's just, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
32:44But this, again, full disclosure, we were given a list of players on a spreadsheet for every position. So as much as I would like to say, this guy doesn't fit in this list, well, that's the list that he was on. And so that's the list that I voted on. Lord have mercy. Please don't include me in this email anymore. Please.
33:02Dan Thomas:I don't want to continue this conversation because these guys are riled up. So I'll stop it there. But Gab and Jules do talk about it. Gab looks as though he's a little bit annoyed there. Check it out over on the Gab and Jewell show Wherever you get your podcasts Get your tickets now for the Dog Stars It's no surprise how fast civilization can disappear Out there, just kill or be killed Jacob Elordi There are people out there They need our help Josh Brolin Shoot first and inquire afterwards Margaret Qualley Okay, tough guy And Guy Pearce Arm up The Dog Stars, directed by Ridley Scott in theaters August 28th.

The next thing you know, you're in a cycling crew. Well, a community cycling group. The thing about Facebook, you might find more than what you're looking for. From a browse to a bike ride, this summer, find more on Facebook.
34:19Dan Thomas:Premier League picks for the season. We saw Franks yesterday. Today, it is Ali Morenos with quite the fetching picture of you there, Ali. We couldn't find something better. Oh, they could. They just didn't mind. They chose this. This was a choice. Yeah, I'm not quite sure as to what the discussion is here. And I suppose the Arsenal guy in this conversation, Alex Kirkland, would be very happy to know that Arsenal are going to not only win, but I do think that they're going to run away with this thing. From second to fifth, I'm saying all these teams are interchangeable. You can mix and match however you want.
34:58I took Manchester City over Manchester United. I suppose that I'll create some sort of conversation. I don't really care. Chelsea and Liverpool. All of these teams are unproven and yet to be seen. But the only reason that, in order to make sense of Manchester City finishing runner-up, then I have Erling Haaland being the top quarter and therefore the player of the year. And he's going to have to play at that level in order for Manchester City to have an opportunity to finish second by a long distance to Arsenal.
35:25Dan Thomas:Frank says that player of the year means nothing. No, he didn't even make a choice. No, he didn't, but he did pick Arsenal to win the league once again. and as LA did too, Mr Arsenal, Alex Kirkland, has got to be happy with that. It's great news. Thanks, guys. Appreciate the support. I think a lot of people have got Arsenal as favourites to go back-to-back and I think it makes a lot of sense. The questions I've got about Arsenal are how long is William Saliba going to be out for? Is the defence going to be as strong, anything like as strong without him? And the fact they haven't brought in a really, really good centre-forward, a Julian Alvarez-like centre-forward.
36:01Those are the only questions I've got. I mean, there are bigger questions, I think, about all of their rivals, about City, Chelsea, Liverpool, United. So I think it's looking pretty good. But getting overconfident or carried away, I think it's looking pretty good for Arsenal right now.
36:12Dan Thomas:So when you say those two through five are interchangeable, it's still just going to be those guys in those top spots some way or another. And they just cannibalise each other. They're going to take points from each other and some are going to jump up. Then they're going to go down and they slide and they jump up again. And I don't think there is sort of a best of the rest. There is Arsenal, and then there is a bunch of teams right there from second to fifth, in which they're all very much in the same conversation, and they're all going to have the same sort of issues. That is going to be the group of teams.
36:45I don't think one of those teams will separate so that they are actually contending against Arsenal. They may separate as best of the rest, maybe, but I don't think any of those contend with Arsenal at the top.
36:56Dan Thomas:Yeah, yeah. Frank, you had Chelsea second yesterday, which obviously we got into. But do you see LA's point on these teams being interchangeable? Yes, yes, of course. And I could have done that too. I just put Chelsea because I played for Chelsea before. I didn't know who to put second. So I wanted to be nice to my former club. Great unbiased analysis from you there, Frank. Well, you know what? It's because we don't know. We can analyze the fact that Arsenal are better than anybody else in the Premier League, which is sad because what we used to see and what we used to appreciate is the fact that there was a real race and that was maybe the only championship in Europe that you could see that.
37:35And now it's like Bundesliga, and we talked about that yesterday. It's like France, the Ligue 1, where you already know who's going to win, which is very sad, you know. And it's explainable because City is changing the coach. Some players are left. Chelsea, they have a new way of thinking, and it's been a while like that. Liverpool, they made the wrong choices. They bought some new players and they didn't fit. And Manchester United are getting better, but they were absolutely dreadful two years ago, or even seven months ago. So you cannot predict anything but Arsenal winning and you pick. After you do because of your feeling or because you love Chelsea, so you put Chelsea second.
38:20But I really hope the Blues are going to do well. but of course no certainty for the fourth and the second, third, fourth and sixth and fifth and even seventh, we don't know.
38:31Dan Thomas:It feels so emphatic, Alex. Is that a concern for you? I remember last year people very excited thinking Liverpool were going to do it again. I've got to say, the idea of Arsenal becoming the Bayern Munich of the Premier League and just winning it season after season, that sounds great to me. That would spare me a great deal of anxiety because I really suffered last season on the way to the title. I think it's going to be a bit closer than that. I've got to say, I think Arsenal are favourites, but I don't think they're going to run away with it or anything like that. I think there'll be plenty of drills and spills along the way.
39:05I'd love it. I'd love it if it was a procession, but I'm not sure it will be. All right, but then, Alex, then who are those teams you think is the actual contender to Arsenal? Who's going to fight Arsenal? yeah well I was asked for my predictions the other day and I had I think I had City second and then Liverpool and Chelsea in my top four I rated United a bit lower down than some other
39:25Dan Thomas:people do okay the great thing is we keep these and we remind you all of them at the end of the season because we like to do things like that don't we extra time we'll be coming up later on our YouTube channel make sure to check it out Ale, Alex and Frank all answering your questions
39:42today.
39:43Dan Thomas:Jabal Musiala has taken to Instagram after collapsing on the pitch today. This comes after a similar incident just a number of days ago but he has said that he's okay and he took to social media to let everybody know. He said first things first I'm doing well. Above all I'm incredibly grateful for all your messages and your support. I understand that many of you are worried. I want to put those concerns to rest today and explain a little more. I've been diagnosed with brief temporary episodes of absence that are easily treatable and are caused by a neurological dysfunction. These can lead to the moments that have occurred recently such as against Leipzig and now in Heidenheim.
40:24Dan Thomas:I know that they may seem scary at first glance but for me they are currently simply part of my everyday life. What is important is that there is no additional health risk beyond this. In close consultation and regular communication with the specialists, it was my personal wish to face this challenge and, with the approval of the neurological specialists, to continue doing what helps me most in my recovery. Simply living my everyday life and continuing to pursue my passion of playing football. I have taken responsibility for that decision. Overall, I have a very good feeling and I am on a good path.
41:00Dan Thomas:I ask for your understanding that I would like to continue keeping this matter within the circle of my closest confidants, the club and the experts. 41:44Dan Thomas:So you were scrolling on Marketplace, and there it was. The bike you'd been searching for. You sent a message, and it turned out the seller was super chatty, kind of funny, and an avid cyclist. The next thing you know, you're in a cycling crew. well, a community cycling group. The thing about Facebook, you might find more than what you're looking for. From a browse to a bike ride, this summer, find more on Facebook. Ali's last day in Bristol for a little while because he's off to Spain again for the opening round, and last time that happened, this happened. Ready? Oh, what a beautiful time. What a beautiful time.
42:24Get ready. Well, it's because, see, Mario, he's showing a whole lot of chess. He's like, he's unbuttoned everything. I said, well, if he's going to unbutton, then sure. Why not? Give me some glasses. Yeah. Take all of that chest hair, America and the world. Go on. You're welcome.
42:41Dan Thomas:I mean, you are off to two top spots again, two holiday destinations, Barcelona and Alicante. Are we going to see this again, a repeat performance? Well, one, Mario Suarez has to be available because he is the key that unlocks everything. and Luis Garcia is not quite as happy to have me around as Mario was. And we're going to miss you, Kay. Oh, it's okay. I'll be honest with you. I don't know that we want to see Dan's chest hair. Nobody wants to see that. There's quite a lot of it. I know. There is plenty of it, but nobody needs that in their lives. So I'm guessing it's not going to be quite like that.
43:15Dan Thomas:Let's get from the man who lives in Paris and doesn't mind a little loose button himself, Frank Leboeuf. Did we like Ali's Spain version with the lowering of the collar? Yeah, it's always good to try, you know, but you have to have a natural class. And that's where sometimes, you know, maybe the T-shirt didn't fit. I don't know, the sunglasses may be the way they're wearing the right one. But I'm not the kind of guy who open up, you know, to show the chest or the hair. I don't know what you want to show. Like Mario does so well. But I think I like the classic way of wearing clothes from Ali. When he goes to decontract, what do you say?
43:58Loose? Nah, it's not Ali. I don't like it. It's not Ali. Well, can I just say, we did not know what we were doing at the time. We did not know that we were going to be waterfront. It ended up being a great piece. Yes, and that Mario was going to be with his button down to his belly button. And his shoes off. He had no shoes. I saw this man without shoes the whole time we were there. So, to be fair to us, we didn't know. CK is fully dressed as if we're going to a nice place. I'm like, all right, well, I think we're going to be somewhere nice. But I didn't know. It was a nice place. It was a nice place.
44:34I'm just saying, I wasn't ready to. What about the hat? Hey, hey. What was the hat? The hat is very simple, Frank. Yeah. If I burn the top of my head, it's a problem. And I just don't have a whole lot of protection out there, Frank. You know this better than anybody else. Yeah, but you don't have to pick that specific hat, you know? You have hats who can be nice as well. I'm saying that hat was very useful.
45:01Dan Thomas:Yeah. You know, Alex, I feel this wouldn't fly on Calle Serrano in Madrid. I just really do. Anyway, that's the Oscars Music Club, so Extra Time is on the way next. Thank you so much for being with us. We'll be with you in just a moment on Extra Time.
45:15Dan Thomas:Welcome into the latest edition of Extra Time. We spent a little bit too long talking about Ali Moreno's chest hair. And so here we are. Well, you know, I mean, there are worse things. He's heading back to Spain. There's some of it. It's not abundant, but some of it. Enough, enough, enough to keep people entertained. A splattering. Yes, you know, it just hits you. A little, a little, bop. Yes, okay. Let's get, Ali's off to Spain this weekend with Real Madrid and Barcelona in action. And last time he was in Spain, he loosened the buttons up a little bit in Mallorca. Well, I was asked to do so. It was a different version of Ale.
45:48I was asked to do so. All right, mind you. Can I just say, I am here professionally working with you, right? And I'm leaving tomorrow. Dan Thomas, he's already going today. How does that work? I do not know. Maybe his liver. His liver needs to be acclimated, I guess. Preferential treatment, it sounds like to me, Ale. You said it, I didn't.
46:08Dan Thomas:All right, first question. Who will Man City miss the most this upcoming season, Frank Rodri or Pep Guardiola? Oh, my God, that's a hard question. Well, I always believe that when you're on the field, you have the choice to make. Well, you have the possibility to make good choices and be effective. It's hard to say that about coaches, especially when you talk about Pep. But I remember Michel Platini saying that it's very hard to be a coach because you want to go on the field. Because sometimes you see things that players don't see. But you cannot do anything. So you're pretty passive. So Pep with his tactics, with his long-term successful years, of course, it's going to be missed.
46:55I'm going for Pep. I'm going for Pep because I just realized that it's impossible to avoid 10 years, I think, of success. like Pep brought to Manchester City, where Manchester City were far away from any other club, like Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, of course, and some others. But what he did with Manchester City was absolutely fantastic.
47:17Dan Thomas:Alex, how much longer will people use the excuse of Atleti having less quality than the big two to justify Simeone's failure, while in reality Atleti have spent more on player transfers than Barcelona and Real Madrid in the past three years? I would say that transfer fees are not the measure you should be looking at. Look at the wage bill. Wages are a better predictor of where teams finish rather than how much they spend on transfers. In terms of the wage bill, Real Madrid and Barca are still significantly higher than Atleti. That is reflected in where they finish. I'm a Simeone believer. I think what he's done has been remarkably transformed the club.
47:54Even though it must be frustrating at times to almost always finish third, of course, finish fourth last season. That is a slight underperformance. I still think he gets pretty much as much as can be gotten out of that team, albeit at times they drop out of the title race a little bit earlier than they should.
48:09Dan Thomas:Is it unfair to expect him to be achieving what those two are? How dare Alex bring facts into the conversation? And that, I think, is the important part here, is that there is this expectation of what Diego Simeone should be or Atletico Madrid should be, and the facts tell you a different story. I would argue that Atletico Madrid continue to overachieve. Not necessarily year after year, but this is a team that went into the semifinals of Champions League. That's overachievement for Atletico Madrid. It is. Now, they underachieved in La Liga in terms of them finishing fourth, and they had some difficult performances, and they had some underwhelming parts of the season.
48:54But on the whole, when I think of Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid, I think they've achieved far more than this team should have. And part of that, and a big part of that, is what Diego Simeone has brought to this club. So much like Alex, I wholeheartedly believe in Diego Simeone. Don't believe in the style a lot of the time, but I do believe in Diego Simeone and trying to squeeze everything he can out of his team.
49:15Dan Thomas:Frank, which player excites you the most in the Chelsea first team and why?
49:23Hmm.
49:27You know what? I'm very interested about what Jao Pedro is going to do this year. He wasn't picked by Ancelotti for the World Cup and I think it was a mistake. And I feel kind of a revenge and I feel him very spot on for the beginning of the season and hopefully he's going to carry on like that for the whole season and bring something special. We need a striker. If Cole Palmer can be behind him and serve him, that guy can be absolutely fantastic. But I'm always being very excited about Caicedo and what he can achieve is somebody like before him, you had Mikelili, of course, N 'Golo Kante, those players who were so important for the Chelsea game.
50:08And hopefully Caicedo will stay at that level for the time that he's going to stay at Chelsea.
50:15Dan Thomas:OK. Ale, who is currently the best striker in the Premier League if Haaland is unavailable? I'll tell you who it's not. It ain't Kai Havertz, regardless of whatever Alex tells me on the list. It's not Kai Havertz. Or Jokeres. You know that Jokeres was on that list, too? As the best strikers in the world? He was on that list. He made it into the list. Who voted for this? Who voted for this? 19th. 19th. Yeah, he was like 20th, but he was in. He was in. Okay, I digress. What do we call a striker nowadays? I do not know, but I'm going to say if Frank is going to be excited about Joao Pedro, then it may very well be Joao Pedro who is the choice here.
51:09I think if he gets enough service, Joao Pedro is a guy that can't finish chances. Sometimes he gets too concerned about being more of a playmaker than a striker, But if it is about being inside the 18-yard box, I do think that Joao Pedro has the potential to be a dominant striker. Not as good as Erling Haaland, but a tier below.
51:28Dan Thomas:OK, Alex, start, bench, or drop the midfield pairing? Pedri and Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Valverde, or Neves and Vitinha? That's a good question. It's a great question. I think my heart goes always with Rodri and Pedri based on the Spain national team. I think I go with them to start after that. Bettina and Neves, what we've seen from PSG the last couple of years, it's very, very tasty. I think they're benched. I think I'm dropping the Real Madrid pair, I'm afraid. OK. Has anyone watched the Mourinho documentary? Alex, how is the documentary being received in Spain? Was Mourinho's relationship that bad with the Madrid players, especially Casillas?
52:15Do you know what we've been trying to find out, me and my colleagues if Jose has seen it and what he thought of it but unfortunately his people won't tell us so we've been asking the question but we haven't got an answer yet I haven't watched it yet I am going to watch it over the next few days before the season starts I think I haven't got around to it yet but yeah it's been getting quite a bit of attention I have to say especially some of those juicy details about the Casillas relationship which we knew we knew was incredibly fraught and very difficult but some of the details that have come out have been have been surprises Have you seen it, Frank?
52:45No, I was too busy watching Vinnie Jones' documentary. No, but seriously, I'm going to watch it. I'm just, I was a bit lazy with TV after the World Cup. I didn't watch TV too much, but I'm going to watch it, of course. You want to see Mourinho. He's a specimen.
53:04Dan Thomas:Yeah, I think you'll like it, Frank, especially all the Chelsea side of things. It's interesting to go down memory lane. What about you, Alain? So you mean to tell me that Mourinho is an interesting character? Oh, absolutely. Oh, you mean the guy that didn't want the attention of the press conference? He didn't want to be presented by Florentino Pérez and Real Madrid because he's a low-profile sort of guy. That guy, that's what we're talking about, right? Of course he's interesting. Have you watched it? Yes, and Jose Mourinho is interesting. And it's not surprising that the relationship with Ike Casillas fell out in the manner in which it happened.
53:44And I think what Mourinho may have learned from those times is how he goes about handling coming into a locker room that seems to be controlled by a few players. And it's something that he's going to have to do coming into this locker room. where this locker room currently was empowered by Florentino Perez the moment that he decided to have Chablonso walk out the door. So now it's Vinny's team and it's Mbappe's team and it's whoever because nobody has actually raised their hand and said, I will lead this team, which is part of the discussion at Real Madrid. So now it seems like by default, it's going to be Mourinho who becomes the leader of this team.
54:30We'll see. We'll see if all of this works out. Everybody right now is feeling great. Everybody is feeling, oh, yeah, all positive vibes. Hey, all of that. All of that is going on right now with Real Madrid. We'll see if that lasts. And it's only going to last if this team is winning.
54:45Dan Thomas:Lovely stuff. Okay, for Ale and Alex, you've shared your favorite Venezuelan food before, but what is a Venezuelan dish that is overrated and you could go without? Be careful, Alex. How much trouble do you want me to get in? How sure can I be that my wife will not watch this? Honestly, you have no idea. I mean, what would it be? I mean, look, I'm not the world's biggest Arepa guy. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Alex. I'm just not a huge Arepa guy. What? All right, okay. You're not. He's walked out. Don't worry, Alex. Don't worry, Alex. I don't even know what it is. I do, and he's wrong. Come on. Are you kidding me right now?
55:30The corner piece, the angular piece, the angular piece of Venezuelan cuisine, arepa, and you're saying that that's overrated? Good Lord, Alex. I just like other things more. I like chequeños more, I like cachafas more. What can I say? Well, you can like those things, it's fine. But nothing happens in Venezuelan cuisine without an arepa.
55:53Dan Thomas:Look, he just married a Venezuelan. he's not a Venezuelan like you. Yeah, but if he wants to survive marrying a Venezuelan, Arepa has to be an angular piece of your starting lineup. Lord have mercy. Of all the things that I thought he was going to say, of all the things that I thought he was going to say, to say that Arepa is not it, it's a problem. It's not been a good day for Alex Herford and Ali Moreno. I had Alex at a certain level. I feel like I'm going to let you down, Ali. Yeah, well, that's what I was about to say. I had you in at a certain level today Yes, this this seat this drop-off has been steep steep Lord mercy, I did but baby Good Lord, I feel like there's nothing underrated for you on Venezuelan cuisine or am I wrong?
56:44No, well overrated sorry overrated overrated I would say and and maybe Alex has had this or not. It's a soup that you're supposed to have to cure a hangover. It's called mondongo. And it has beef stripe in it. And, you know. Oh, no. I could do without it. Okay. But the soup itself, if you take some of that stuff out, the taste is great. It has a whole bunch of stuff in it that I think you could do without. But I'm never taking arepa off the table. Are you joking, Alex, right now?
57:21Dan Thomas:Alex, you're going to have to be careful going back to bed tonight, mate. That's all we've got time for on the latest version of Extra Time. Por favor, Dios mío, Santo, la Virgen. Alex Kirkwood will be at the Atleti game tomorrow. We'll be hearing more from him on tomorrow's show, no doubt. Ha ha ha ha ha!
