In short
The episode is an ESPN FC World Cup discussion focused on the U.S. men’s national team qualifying for the knockout stage with a 2-0 win over Australia. The hosts and guests break down the match: an early own goal (11th minute) and Alex Freeman’s 43rd-minute goal that was initially flagged offside, but VAR confirmed it was onside. They emphasize the U.S. playing compact, dictating tempo, pressing, and creating chances via flanks (notably Balogun’s runs and Pepe’s movement).
Key claims
the early goal forced Australia to take risks; the U.S. kept Australia from scoring for long stretches; intensity dropped after ~65 minutes but the U.S. still managed the final 20 minutes.
Notable examples
Tyler Adams’ defensive organization; Balogun’s threat opening space for midfield; Ricardo Pepé’s role in a 4-4-2/second-striker dynamic.
Guests
Hercules Gomez, Jermaine Jones, Jurgen Klinsmann, Jeff Cameron, Breck Shea, Casey Keller.

0:30Hello, everyone, and welcome into our ESPN FC studios for this edition of the show, where just moments ago, the U.S. men's national team have officially booked their spot in the round of 32 of this World Cup. I'm Alexis Tunes, and speaking of the U.S. men's national team, I've got two former players here with me, Hercules Gomez and Jermaine Jones. Plus, we have a World Cup winner himself and former U.S. men's national team coach, Jurgen Klinsmann. We also have even more U.S. men's national team former players joining us later on. We'll reveal who they are in a bit. But as I said, job has been done.
1:07No Christian Pulisic, no problem for the USA as they dismantled Australia by two goals to nil. They benefited from an own goal with just 11 minutes on the clock. Then Alex Freeman found the back of the net in the 43rd minute. It had to be checked because it was originally flagged for offside. VAR came in and showed that he was very much onside, and that absolutely confirmed the win for the USA. Here are scenes from the watch party over in Houston, Texas, when the goals went in for the USA, as this was just one of, no doubt, many celebrations across the country, making this a very happy Friday for all of the fans of the Star Spangled Banner.
1:52Right. Remember when I said we have more former U.S. men's national team players joining us? Well, we have Jeff Cameron and Breck Shea joining us as well, live from Houston, Texas. Jeff and Breck, I'm going to start with you on this one. I guess we forget about what we were all saying in the pre-match about Australia, how this was going to be a physical test, a mental test. The USA have passed with flying colors. Jeff, let me start with you. What impressed you the most about this win?
2:21Jurgen Klinsmann:I think we were resilient from the first moment on we stayed compact we had our composure you know it was just about time we created an own goal the first match we've created another own goal here today we need that luck and I think that's going to pay tribute throughout the rest of the tournament but for me we work together as a team we dictated the tempo and really it was just us in control all night. Breck what stood out to you as well because like I said we were expecting much more of a challenge from Australia, but the USA were able to nullify all of that.
2:58Jurgen Klinsmann:Yes, like Jeff talks about, we created our own look by being dynamic and taking players on. We saw Balogun shift to the left and beat his player to the byline, and he just makes that goal happen by being dangerous. It's hard for a defender running at your own goal like that, and credit to him for that and Pepe making that run. All around, a great performance. They grinded it out, and it was a rough one, but it was awesome to watch. Awesome to watch indeed, and I'm sure Mauricio Pochettino will be very happy with what he saw from his team again in back-to-back matches. Juergen, how would he be feeling about this win?
3:30Like I said, we talked about how much of a test this was going to be for the USA. There were some concerns considering they had to go into it without their star man in Christian Pulisic, but in the end, as I said, passing with flying colors.
3:43Jurgen Klinsmann:Absolutely. I mean, he will be thrilled. He will be super happy, as is the whole team and obviously the whole country. I mean, this is a big deal now. This win is a big deal. It takes you directly into the knockout phase. And you can experiment in your third game if you want to do so. You can test things out. But the way they handled the entire game from the beginning on, from the first, second on, how they forced their own goal, how they put them under pressure, how they were ready for every one against one battle. and they were focused. They were in it the entire 90 minutes. I mean, Australia never gave you a feeling that they can really score a goal or even two because the U.S.
4:25Jurgen Klinsmann:didn't allow them, didn't allow them the circumstances. And this is fantastic. I mean, this is awesome for the upcoming next couple of games. This should give them a lot of confidence. It should give the back line a lot of confidence because you play to nil. the goalkeeper, the back line it couldn't have been done any better. Is that how you see it too Herc? Couldn't have been better. It could absolutely be better. 65 very good minutes where the U.S. men's actually is very intense. Exactly how they did against Paraguay. The intention was there in how they recovered the ball how they pressed the opponent how they made themselves compact, how Tyler Adams always protected the back line.
5:09Jurgen Klinsmann:It all of a sudden became a line of three, allowing Alex Freeman or Anthony Robinson to fill in those voids down the flanks where they attacked at will. They were very good down the flanks. The movement from Weston McKinney, Malik Timmon, just like we saw against Paraguay, was very fluid, very ever going. They constantly found spaces, created those spaces for themselves. Jeff and Breck are correct about the luck that the U.S. Men's National creates because of how they take advantage of these flanks plays. And we can see right there, they were very good on the outsides through these flanks. But it was a good 65 minutes of football.
5:41Jurgen Klinsmann:And after that, you saw the U.S. men's national team drop its intensity. And it's always going to be very difficult to maintain 90 minutes of intensity. And while the barometer may say 75, 80 degrees, if you're on this pitch under the sun in a noon game, the field starts drying up, the ball rolls slower, the intensity slows down, fatigue sets in. We saw the referee cramping for God's sake. it's normal that you're going to have that drop in intensity. But in that drop of intensity, they allowed Australia to come back into the game. And while I agree that there was nothing really for Matt Freeze to do, there were a lot of nervy moments in the last 20 minutes of this game.
6:24Jurgen Klinsmann:Australia grew into the confidence. And while we maybe didn't expect Australia to not be this much of an opponent in terms of football, and I think Tony Popovich, their coach, has a lot to do with that. Jermaine and I were talking about how could you leave your goal scorer, Aran Kunda, from the first match against Turkey, your only deep threat on the bench. Conor Metcalf as well, who scores a second goal. They're both on the bench. Sometimes they just get too cute. By the time they're in this game, they start growing in that confidence, and they're back in it. They feel like they can come out and play, but they always made it a fight.
6:56Jurgen Klinsmann:At times, it was a wrestling match by certain players of the U.S. men's national team and certain players of Australia, but then you knew you had to suffer. And Juergen always said this as a coach, the ability to suffer. And that's what the U.S. Men's National Team did. And it was a good, hard-fought three points. Good, hard-fought three points. JJ, I'm going to let you in in a bit, but we have to go back down to Houston where we have Breck and Jeff because we know that we have to let you guys go. Sports centers seem to want you. We're going to have to fight them for you these days. But Jeff, once again, let me start with you.
7:22Just final thoughts on what we saw from the U.S., especially now that they have already advanced to the next round. They must be filled with confidence then. and what we can probably expect from how they may line up against Turquia in the final one.
7:36Jurgen Klinsmann:Yeah, I mean, it's going to give opportunity for other players to step in. Obviously, Tyler Adams is on two yellows, so he can rest some players so they don't pick up another yellow. But for me, the Balogun, Pepe, they were unselfish. They made a lot of runs today, the backtracking, the defending as a team. But more importantly, I saw the belief. The guys stepping in, working together as one. Guy got tapped. Everybody got tapped. One another. And for me, that's a powerful thing. Us going into our next game, that confidence, that belief. Hey, we can dream. And we're hosting the World Cup. So let's dream big.
8:14Dream big. Breck, how big are you dreaming? What were you saying? Quaterfinals the way the U.S. are looking this good?
8:23Jurgen Klinsmann:It's been fun to watch. I mean, they set out. You've got to win your first game, right? And now we've qualified for the next round. It's been a joy to watch. They played pretty. They played ugly. They fought. Just everyone fighting for each other. You see the ball turn over the first guy to press, and then there's someone behind him. But for me, it's being smart, maybe rotating a few guys, getting some guys on the bench who are going to help us in the later rounds, getting them some minions and some confidence. And why not dream big? We can go all the way. And until we don't, we can. Ooh, all the way.
8:57We love the confidence, guys. Jeff, Breck, thank you so much for joining us. We'll catch up with you soon. And remember, you can catch these guys on SportsCenter, as I'm sure there's going to be plenty reaction to what we just saw from the U.S. men's national team. Thanks, guys. JJ, let me let you in now, too. As we just heard from Breck, we've seen the USA do it pretty and get a win. We've seen them do it ugly and get a win. Two back-to-back wins. What's impressed you the most about what we saw today? I would say all together. You hit the nail on the head. I think we saw 45 minutes in the first game, really good one.
9:29Now we saw 60 minutes really good. And you have your best player not playing. But still, we can talk about luck that the other teams scored their own goals. I would say that's not luck. That's the situation of the team is pushing the people, the teams in that moment to make that mistakes. I think that we see a team what is growing into a tournament. We had two different faces. Today it was clear that we will face a team who tries to get in our head, try to get us on their side to play a physical game. But I think the guys did it pretty good over the, I would say, 60, 65 minutes. We did it pretty good.
10:09I think then it plays in conditions and all that stuff that the players get a little bit maybe tired. The other team is like throwing people in front. They're risking more. But still, they're kept to zero. That's important. And now you go to the next game and you will look what happened with Turkey today. Yeah, exactly. Because now the USA can officially top the group if Paraguay managed to beat Turkey or if that game just ends in a draw. So either way, the USA in a very favorable position now. Juergen, of course, Herc just mentioned the fact that, you know, we did see about 60-65 good intense minutes from the USA.
10:46Chris Richards keeps talking about how they don't want to let off until that final whistle is blown. Are you concerned any at all that they're not able to keep that intensity for the full 90?
10:58Jurgen Klinsmann:No, I'm not concerned. I mean, this is totally up to the guys and to the coaching staff, you know, to keep that intensity going, to keep that energy high and keep on even growing. I mean, obviously we said about the fantastic 45 minutes against Paraguay, the best we've seen in decades. And now today, very good performance, 60, 65 minutes. And absolutely, yeah, you're going to get tired. Absolutely, the opponent risks more and goes than forward. And so you're on the right track, but you're still developing. You're still developing as a group right now. And now you can kind of take it a bit easier with Turkey, obviously.
11:39Jurgen Klinsmann:You're already qualified for the next round, and everything is going your way. So this is the moment now you can give some minutes to other players that you need maybe later on in the tournament, as Bragg said. That's a very good thought. And, yeah, I mean, it can only get better. And I think the believing part is huge, you know. I mean, who would have said that you start in this World Cup with two wins right away? I mean, two convincing wins right away. I mean, this is already fantastic, but now it can only get better. I mean, this is creating an enormous amount of energy in the country, everywhere, with the fans, within the team environment, with their families.
12:25Jurgen Klinsmann:Everybody says, hey, why not dreaming big? Absolutely. Because once you get in the knockout phase, it's one game at a time. And if they play with that intensity, if they stay with their feet on the ground, which I'm convinced they will do, then anything, absolutely anything is possible. Herc, last week, this time, of course, when the USA got that big win over Paraguay, and we did talk a lot about the fact that the Paraguay that we expected simply didn't show up. We were sitting down watching, and I think it's safe to say that the Australia we expected didn't really show up today. And you said, we don't want to do a disservice to the U.S.
12:57and take away from their win, but based on what we have seen from these two opponents now, how much do we read into just the fact that they did not really show up?
13:07Jurgen Klinsmann:I think they didn't show up because the U.S. men's national team didn't allow them to show up. Juergen said the same thing in both pregame shows, and it registered with me about an early goal for the U.S. men's national team. Yeah. How that was key. And both times Juergen said it, it happened. And it's key. Why? Because these are teams that have a defensive posture. So when you score early, what they need to do now is come out of their shell. They need to now risk and go forward. And when they do that, there's going to be more spaces afforded to you because they're going to leave. They're going to risk.
13:38Jurgen Klinsmann:so there's gonna be more one of you on situations whether on the flanks or through the middle and that was the case in both games so we can sit here and say paraguay didn't show up paraguay didn't show up because they allowed four goals yeah it's a team that was better than four goals to the united states men's national during the world cup qualifying australia didn't show up in quotations i'm not so sure i i think australia uh is who we thought they were um the u.s just put them in some positions where if you're facing your own nets and the ball comes across you more often than not that mistake's going to happen and it's going to end up in your own net.
14:08Jurgen Klinsmann:After that, they got their second goal and it was just too much. I see clear advantages that this U.S. men's national team has to a lot of teams in this tournament, to a lot of teams in this tournament. So I'm not going to make less of a win versus Paraguay and a win versus Australia because we think the opponents are easy. Physically, this U.S. team is as capable as any team in this tournament, any team. The intensity they play at which the pace they play at and the cohesion that they have shown and the way that marissa pochettino have all of a sudden has this midfield plane where you don't know who to mark and where to go they're ever fluid they've got a very good chance where if they can maintain a pace for longer periods throughout these games uh they're going to compete with a lot of different teams so i wouldn't hold too much stock of this is paraguay this is australia no i think the u.s created those situations and put them in there.
14:57You can only beat who's in front of you, right? You can only beat who's in front of you. Yeah, and I think that's the, let's say it this way, that as a player, you go always on the field and you don't care who you're playing. You have respect for the opponent who is in front of you, but then you go in and it starts by 0-0 and you play against 11 other guys. So, and you see what you get out of it. As a coach, of course, you look at the way that you say the similar, right? And you go into it and you say too, like we set up, and I think they have a coach who's really good in setting up and having an idea of how he wants to play.
15:29And I think that's what surprises us all because you see the rotation, the movement they do and how comfortable they play in that movement. And I think that's what makes us all now believe and hope for more. And I'm always somebody, like Jürgen said, you try to get out of the group stage and you try to get there you're confident and you build it game for game. And then when you come out of there, you face every game and you take game by game. And like I said before, the game is 90 minutes and it comes down, who has the better day? Well, it sounds like JJ is saying that we should give Mauricio Pochettino his flowers for how he's been lining up this U.S.
16:10men's national team. And that's perfect timing because when we come back, he's come under a lot of criticism. But now it seems like things are starting to click. Has Poch redeemed himself? And Casey Keller joins us next.
16:34turn it up storm has zero sugar and 200 milligrams of caffeine so you can turn that workout up a notch good energy in good energy out energy for life no one goes to hanks for his spreadsheets
16:49Jurgen Klinsmann:They go for a darn good pizza. Lately, though, the shop's been quiet, so Hank decides to bring back the$1 slice. Well, last night we saw celebrations in Guadalajara, Mexico, and maybe Seattle with these beautiful scenes there. We'll get a little rowdy tonight after the U.S.
17:28men's national team put on quite the show, defeating Australia 2-0. And someone who was at the game for us, Casey Keller, he usually is here comfortable with us in studio, but he traded us in to hang out with the legend that is Alex Morgan, Casey.
17:46Jurgen Klinsmann:Yeah, Servando, her husband, was my roommate his rookie year for preseason. So, yeah, it was good seeing him and Alex, and Tim Howard was just to my right a little bit. So, yeah, it was a fun time being in the box with everybody. I'm sure it was. You looked very comfortable indeed. But, Casey, the U.S. Men's National Team looked comfortable for most of the game on the pitch indeed, wrapping up that 2-0 win. What stood out to you? What impressed you the most? Yeah, to me, it was just a very pragmatic performance. I mean, I didn't think any of us expected that electric first half that we had against Paraguay.
18:20Jurgen Klinsmann:That we thought that Australia would be a little more dogged, a little bit more difficult defensively. You know, running at defenders, you know, Herc and everyone was talking about, Jermaine and Juergen, just that, you know, when you run at defenders and you put them in precarious positions, good things happen. And the U.S. got that early goal once again. And then what a great timing, you know, right at the end of the first half, get that second, which then really forces Australia into doing something different that they're not comfortable doing. Yes, they created a couple of chances and they didn't really take advantage of it.
18:56Jurgen Klinsmann:But in the end, just a really smart, important performance from the U.S. to get out of that with three points. Yeah, indeed. And as we were teasing, Mauricio Pochettino has come under a lot of criticism, even from us right here at this desk, trying to see what his perfect 11 is. Will he eventually get it right? And we look at these two games now and we feel that he has pretty much silenced all of us, Juergen. He got this 11 correct, even though he was given quite the blow with no Christian Pulisic. Oh, he got it all right. Absolutely, perfectly right. And that move with Christian was not available at the moment, then moving Pepe up and going into a 4-4-2.
19:39Jurgen Klinsmann:And yeah, it worked out perfectly because the philosophy is still the same. The pressuring after losing the ball, the going at the opponent immediately, you know, the race, the physicality of the game, trying to keep the tempo high, which is not easy because you have these two breaks in the middle of the first in the middle of the second half, which cuts basically to quarters now, a soccer game. So you want to keep the tempo high. You want to get the opponent tired. And they are able to do that. And that should give them really even more belief. And Maurizio, he had in both games now the perfect match plan.
20:18Jurgen Klinsmann:Huge, huge compliment. And who would have thought before the tournament that, you know, you blow away Paraguay 4-1 and you beat Australia 2-0. And you're right there with six points. and you're in the knockout phase. Unbelievable. Unbelievable stuff. Herc, like I said, we've criticized him not getting the 11 either right or just us not knowing what the perfect 11 is until the very first game of a World Cup, which was when he brought in Chris Richards. Of course, that was out of his control with Richards dealing with injury. But both games now, he's shut us up. Shut us up, I think, is what we wanted, right?
20:52Jurgen Klinsmann:He's always asked to be in a footballing culture. He wants the United States to be more of a footballing culture. The reality is, if that were the case, he may not be at the World Cup coaching. He went through a rough spell as well where he deserved to be criticized. Now, the U.S. Men's National Team under Maricio Pochettino right now is flying, and he is a big reason for that. Tactically, they are doing things that are nuanced that I've never seen these players do, and that is a massive credit to Maricio Pochettino. But it's two games in, and still a long tournament to go. If the U.S. Men's National Team, and this is not going to be the case, I don't feel it's going to be the case, but you can't measure success right now after two games.

21:27Jurgen Klinsmann:If they lose against Turkey and then lose in the round of 32, are we going to say it was success? No, you're going to be influenced. Your decisions will be influenced by the totality of what was the tournament. So two games are very good, and it leaves you feeling very good about what this US Men's National can do under Mauricio Pochettino. But calma, there's still some tournament to play, and I think Mauricio Pochettino will be the first one to tell you that. I don't know. I'm getting excited, JJ. They've been looking good out there. And as Herc says, tactically, we're seeing them do things that we have never seen his US men's national team be able to do before, and they're doing it well.
21:56Yeah, that's right. I think Hercules is right when he says that before these two games he was criticized. But I would say to the right point, right? Because he tried a lot of stuff out, but that's the stuff what the coach has to do. And he used the games all before the two World Cup games to try stuff out and see what's the best and what fits actually to the player. So now at the World Cup, you have to say there's one big thing, and that's as a coach, he has the responsibility, and that's the team has to win. And it doesn't matter how you win, you have to win. But he did it in the first game, like we said, 45 minutes with real good football.
22:37So now we have that 60, 65 minutes good football. And I'm pretty sure he has his experience. He's been on big stages that he's sitting there and say, okay, we had our pieces, we played good, but the quality I have with this team, we can do it better. But we have to be cleaner. We have to do this and this better. And I think, yes, you have to say he picked what he made decisions right. They were perfect now. They won two games. That's the main goal. They go to the next round. But now the teams will come. And there will be countries where we'll be really forced and tested. And then you need, and I know that, it is really helpful if you have a coach who has experience, who can tell you this and this has to be changed.
23:19Jurgen Klinsmann:Alexis, let me tell you where I think Marisa Pochettino absolutely is just a monster in this situation. He speaks about culture, he talks about culture, and Juergen could probably elaborate on this more, but when he tells the press that there were players that felt no matter what happened, they had their spots secure. And he comes in, he's like, no, no, nobody's secure. And you can see that, you can feel that energy on the field in the way they fight. That's where, for me, he's shut me up. The doubts I had on the type of coach he could be culturally, those doubts are gone. It's now, did you do enough to put it all together for a run in the tournament?
23:58Casey, tactically speaking as well, any of the doubts that you had as well pre-tournament of Mauricio Pochettino, all gone now?
24:06Jurgen Klinsmann:Yeah, I think so. I mean, I think basically we looked at Pochettino had a 20-month preseason. And he was going to look at every combination possible to see what was right. Now, I think a lot of us expected that formation and maybe the player personnel to be a little more consistent later in that 20-month period. But he decided that wasn't necessary. All he needed to do is be ready for that first game that actually mattered. And they were. And then what they were able to do is bring the emotions back into check and be prepared for this match to get a result. And they've done both things exceptionally well.
24:44Jurgen Klinsmann:And to Hurt's point, now the next step is you put yourself in a great platform, finish that off against Turkea, and then go into that round of 32 full of confidence and ready to make a deep run. Jurgen, of course, you know exactly how difficult this job can be and unforgiving when you have pundits everywhere picking apart your 11s, your squads, thinking that they can do it better than you. Former players talking as well. But for Mauricio Pochettino, he has definitely gotten it right. What do you make of his in-game management specifically? Because we even saw against Paraguay how he brought on subs and they were able to make an impact as well.
25:25Jurgen Klinsmann:No, I like his way of addressing issues on the sideline. Not overly hyper, not too nervous, not at all. Calming things down, talk to them quickly and politely in a good way with a positive body language. And obviously he knows, Moisa knows it. I mean, the rule of the game is, you know, how far can you take a team? And it started perfectly. And he knows now in certain moments he has to kind of bring them back down to the ground, if necessary. And then he knows that the next opponent is the most difficult one. When you go into a World Cup, it's all about the next game. It's never about what is behind you.
26:04Jurgen Klinsmann:So he proved now a lot of people wrong with their critics. But the critics were also justified over these 20 months because he tried so many things out. But he doesn't care about those critics. He doesn't care about the voices coming from left and from right because he's living in that environment as a player. So for a long, long time, you as a manager, you want to stay really, really focused on what is coming up next, next moment. So now you're thinking about how to regenerate the team. How do you handle now the starting XI for a game against Turkey, which we know then tonight what the result should be.
26:42Jurgen Klinsmann:and so you always have to kind of keep your group looking forward to the next and don't get stuck in what just happened. They obviously should enjoy the evening and be proud of themselves with the good game. But yeah, in his role, it's all about people management and I think the pictures showed that in a nice way. He walks up to the players, he's having good quick talks because you cannot give them a long talk anyway. First of all, you don't have the time. And second of all, they don't even listen any longer than 10 seconds to you. So he does a really, I really looked at it from the outside. He's doing a really good job.
27:23Yeah. And for me, Isaac, too, when we go back or talk about Poghoshino, when you think about it, in the games before, he tried a lot of stuff out, but he never played with the best team he had. So now he's playing with the best team. So you have to say a lot of credit goes to the players, too. Yeah. Because there, and I have that experience now as a young coach, where you have your ideas and you put them all together, but if you don't have the perfect 11 who can translate that, what you have in your head to the field, it doesn't work. So you can have so much ideas than you want. At the end, the players are the ones who have to translate that, what you have in your mind to the field.
28:00And that's why I say it's a lot of credit to these players right now that you see it, that after the game, they're brave with each other, they have a connection, they work with each other. and that's the most important. Huck said it before. At the end in a tournament, it's not always what we see on the field. It's the chemistry what they're building and I think that is what right now, why they're playing so good. I can't wait for JJ to get his first official big coaching job and then all of us here can pick apart his teams, wonder if he got tactic rights, throw him in the flames. All right, well, one decision that Mauricio Pochettino had to make for this one is who does he bring in for Christian Pulisic?
28:35Of course, we know no Pulisic in this one because of his calf injury. Kirk, Ricardo Pepe came in as well. He's come into Justice World Cup in fine form for club. What did you make of him today?
28:46Jurgen Klinsmann:Yeah, so don't focus so much on the formation. You look at Ricardo Pepe slotting him for Christian Pulisic, that is obviously not a like for like. One is a nine, and the other one is a playmaker slash winger who can kind of do it all. What you should focus on is when they defend, Ricardo Pepe slides over to the left-hand side, and he works. Okay? He works a little harder. He helps defend those lanes. And when they attack, when the ball's on the other side, he pinches in. That is your second striker. But there are times where you have Foller and Balogun, Ricardo Pepe, Anthony Robinson, Serginio Dest, all in a line of four.
29:20Jurgen Klinsmann:They're up that high. And then you have Weston and Malik underneath. It really is a thing of beauty of how high they are up the pitch and how much they move for each other to create those spaces. And we talked about that prevention, you know, on transitions. Tyler Adams, again, was very physical and very bright. slotting in with Chris Richards and Tim Ream to help fortify that back line. It went a little too stretched in the final 20-25 minutes, but I think that's normal. Again, I've played in Seattle. I've played during the day at that time. People think it's 75-80 degrees. You should be able to play in that.
29:53Jurgen Klinsmann:It's a lot hotter on the field. The grass dries up very quickly. The ball doesn't circulate as well. The legs get heavy. I thought this team managed fairly well the situation. There are those moments where now if you're a team like Turkey or a potential round of 32 team, you start seeing, okay, there are going to be moments when you can attack this team. There are going to be moments where you have to weather the intensity storm of the U.S. men's national team. They may have showed a few cracks, but I thought they managed it very well. All right. Well, let's have a look at who managed to be named the player of the match in this one.
30:23And surprise, surprise, it's a man who found the back of the net not once, but twice against Paraguay. He didn't find the back of the net today but he still was awarded the player of the match. Casey what did you make of Flo Balogun's performance today?
30:38Jurgen Klinsmann:Yeah I think he was always a threat he was you know obviously his his his run kind of created the first goal but then he was always that option in behind I think with a a couple cleaner touches or something he could have actually been on the score sheet once or twice but uh yeah and I think because only because he's always that constant threat that opens up more space for the midfield as well if they elect to then not look for him on the pass so yeah I think again he's he's really been inspirational in these opening two matches and uh you know we we talked about this conversation you know over and over and over again for months who's that number nine gonna be and and what effect are they gonna have and and flow is shown with this form for club it's just translated into country and and And it's been extremely important for the opening success.
31:31Extremely important indeed. Was it a man-of-the-match performance for you two, Juergen from Balogun?
31:38Jurgen Klinsmann:Well, I don't know. Maybe not. Maybe yes. I think a couple of guys had good performances. I think Tyler Adams, I liked him, how he cleaned up and how he organized a lot of stuff. You know, Xadrinho Destes played his second good game in a row. I mean, obviously, to choose the striker at the end, you know, has mostly to do with scoring or not scoring or if you've scored two goals there's no doubt about it but but i think that it's also cool to see from this game you know that he can much pochettino can shift into a 4-4-2 easily with a second striker alongside balogun you know with peppy today it's also about creating that understanding for each other creating a partnership you know so if you play with two strikers up front it changes the dynamic behind but also you know how these kind of work with each other, how they smell each other, how they build a partnership.
32:27Jurgen Klinsmann:There might be a game coming up now pretty soon where he has to exactly create that type of a system in order to break down an opponent. Hopefully, we're going to go many games now over the next couple of weeks. So now already knowing that it works with Pepe and Balogun as partners up front, and then you have Christian Pulisic coming from the left and Wessie McKinney in the middle, Tillman in the middle, and another one from the right. it's good options now that you already can develop because based on how the opponent also comes up with the technical formation, also with the type of players that the opponents have, you might be better off to throw two number nines into the box up front there and have the other ones then come from the sides or wherever.
33:13All right, well, let's have a look at the standings now then of Group D. Now that it's all said and done for the USA, you will see two wins. has them sitting pretty at the top on six points. Australia still clinging on to their three points after their win over Turquia, and then Turquia and Paraguay play later tonight. Right, all three host nations managed to get a win in their second game. We'll see which ones impress the most next.
33:52Jurgen Klinsmann:You thought this was your run club era. Turns out, it was more of a thinking about run club era. The good news? Someone's marathon training is about to start. Sell your workout gear on Depop. Just snap a few photos and we'll take care of the rest. They get their race day fit and you get a payout for trying. Someone on Depop wants what you've got. Start selling now. Deepak, where taste recognizes taste.

35:26Well, these are scenes from Hartford, Connecticut, just down the road from us as the American outlaws got together, as they do often, to celebrate what was a big win for the U.S. men's national team as they officially booked their spot in the round of 32 of this FIFA World Cup. And if you don't want to take my word for it, just take the official FIFA account's word for it as they confirmed what we knew, that this 2-0 win over Australia, making it two wins on the chart for the USA, has booked their spot in the next round. All right, back with my crew here now, because now that we know that the USA has qualified, Mexico has qualified, Canada still with some scores to settle, but we are expecting them now to get out of the group.
36:10They did have a massive win over Qatar following up what was a disappointing draw, I guess we could say, for them, even though they came from behind. Mexico not doing it pretty, but still getting the job done. And, of course, the USA getting it done pretty, getting it done ugly, but getting it done. So of all the host nations, Juergen, who has looked the best?
36:32Jurgen Klinsmann:Oh, no, the U.S. team looked the best by, you know, by far, by far. I mean, obviously, huge compliment to Canada, six goals putting behind Qatar. But Qatar lost two players. You know, they were down to nine men, which, I mean, shouldn't reduce now the compliments for Canada. It's fantastic that they are already also in the next round. In Mexico, you need Mexico to go far in this tournament because of their fantastic fans, because of the hype in their country. And they're going to grow as well now over the next couple of weeks. I mean, having all three nations in the knockout phase is humongous.
37:07Jurgen Klinsmann:It's huge. But I think what the U.S. team has done in these two games is just outstanding. And it gets noticed now. And I think this is really a big deal. It gets noticed around the world. You know, this team gets recognized now for what they are doing. And the compliments coming from all over, from Europe, South America, Africa, wherever, they all say, you know, what is this kind of a U.S. team? You know, they can take it far. You know, they are really inspiring their nation, inspiring their fans. And it's attractive football. It's attacking minded football. So I think, you know, you've got to give the U.S.
37:45Jurgen Klinsmann:definitely the number one spot between these three. But it's fantastic that all three nations are going in the knockout phase. The tournament is getting bigger and bigger and bigger. Yeah, you really feel the sense of belief from the different fans from all of the different three co-host nations. Casey, but who's impressed you the most on the pitch? Yeah, I mean, I like the way the U.S. has been able to do both matches. You know, have that first match being super dynamic, you know, very explosive in the attack and really exciting. And then in a little bit different feel in this match, just kind of be a little more pragmatic, keep the clean sheet and just get the result.
38:24Jurgen Klinsmann:Yeah, I mean, would they love to have every game where you're just flying and creating chances and scoring goals, of course. But there's times when you've got to respect the opponent and understand what the game gives you. And I think today was one of those games. So we've seen the U.S. be able to get three points in two different ways, and I think they'll learn a lot from that. I also think that their next opponent is going to be the big test. I think that's going to be to see against a more difficult opponent, kind of how can they play? How can they bring both those two different styles against a more difficult European opponent?
39:02Hark, is it the U.S. for you as well?
39:05Jurgen Klinsmann:Yes, but not by a lot. I think barely. And when I say barely is not only in their play, but because the group of Canada, I think, is weaker. And I think Bosnia and the little they did against Canada in that game and the overwhelming presence of Canada showed me a lot. but Qatar didn't show me anything. Yeah. So it's the U.S. who's had better opponents, better at the plate just barely, but Canada has really impressed me. And this is... Is it because Jonathan David got his hat tee? Oh, that's part of it. This is only the third ever World Cup. Yeah. They just got their first World Cup win and they got it with a 6-0 drumming.
39:41Jurgen Klinsmann:And Jonathan David is now at the top of the golden boot race. And when you look at their team and how intense they play, they rival the U.S. Men's Nation in intensity. It's a well-coached team. They've got a whole country behind them just like the U.S. I don't think anybody wants to play any of these two teams whether you're a big team or not you just rather not have that headache they've shown me that as well but I think the U.S. that first half versus Paraguay was overwhelming and I like what Jurgen said the rest of the world is talking about it when you talk to other pundits when you see other news stations in different countries they talk to you about that U.S.
40:13Jurgen Klinsmann:man's national performance against Paraguay so that's still number one but there was a ranking right now would be one U.S. two Canada and three Mexico even though Mexico is the only team that has not given up a goal, which is odd to say. JJ, how do you see it? Yeah, I think everyone is on point. I think we can say that the U.S. was the, so far what I saw, what we all saw, the best team from when you watch the games. Canada is a team that has a lot of power, a lot of energy, who I think can be a really dangerous team in this tournament. And then in Mexico. Mexico, I'm not so behind, you know, I think there's a lot, Herc said, a lot of changes, a lot of it's a different team than it was back in the days.
41:00Even the game against South Korea, it was not that I say, oh, they pushed so much in the show, like when you look at really, we talked 45 minutes, 60, 60, 65 minutes with the US, then you watch Canada, how they played in the first game, or now the 6-0 against Qatar. there's a lot of energy, there's a lot of power. When you look at Mexico, back in the days that was Mexico too. We talked about it. If you look at it, they will boot the first 45 minutes. So, and then the South Korea goalkeeper makes a mistake. It's not that Mexico played them completely on the wall and it was the better team. It was a mistake of a goalkeeper where they scored and they made for them to go through.
41:41We don't know what happens now in the next phases because I think, like Juergen said, it would be good. Of course, Mexico is always good. I did a host, too. They have an amazing fan base. But I think it's the same with Canada and the same with the U.S. Jermaine just wants a little fiesta mexicana. Jermaine, just say you want some taquitos, some margaritas. I always love playing in Mexico. The Mexican fans, I think, bring something to the game. Hey, all right. Well, Casey Keller, thank you so much for joining us today. I think I hear a helicopter somewhere behind you. I know that's your ride back to this side so you can get back to work with us.
42:17Jurgen Klinsmann:My perch. Yeah, my perch here on top of Seattle BMW. Nice little view. And then the helicopter circling. Oh, my days. How the other half live. How the other half live. Thank you so much, Casey. All right. Well, there's a break in the NWSL calendar right now. But when we are back, it will be on July 5th. Boston Legacy Bay FC on ESPN.

43:49Well, make sure to join us for some more ESPN FC tonight. 10.30 p.m. Eastern Time on ESPN Plus, where they'll be looking back at all of the games, including the USA's win. But there are some other big games coming up tonight, including for this country. The Tartan Army from Scotland have descended upon New England. You have seen that they have won the hearts over of all the people in Boston. They have also pretty much drank the city dry of all beer. But that's all we expect from the Scots. That and good vibes indeed. Well, Chris Turner, got to hang out with them.
44:25Jurgen Klinsmann:We all know what a Scotsman keeps under his kilt, but what does he keep in his sparring? I've asked these chaps to give me stuff from their sparrans. Beto, drop that beat. We're going to wrap everything that's put into my hand right now. First things first from you, my friend. What have you got? What are we pulling out? Let's shade. Thank you for explaining. Look at this. Cool.
45:08Jurgen Klinsmann:hat you know I'm thrilled when I chuck it get it over there I'm returning the bucket picking it up yes I must ask basically this is a Scottish bus pass you can get the transport free it's hysterica they don't understand free buses in America they get confused you know that I want one respect my guys got the condom of course the Durex I admire let me check the back yo it's not expired keeping it safe that's what we need what else you got guys take heed taking it out I'm so glad that you asked. They're over here on the street. They've all got flasks. No need to pay. Yes, that's the bit. Getting it out.
45:44Jurgen Klinsmann:Yeah, yeah, we're drinking a hit. Take a wee little dram. It's risky. If you're under 21, you can still get the whiskey. That's what we need. Yeah, we star these. My guys pop it up with the tartan army. Make sure not a drop of that gets spilled. And please don't show the camera underneath your kill.
46:04Absolute bars. I could watch that and listen to that over and over. Well, here's what's coming up later tonight in just about an hour's time. Scotland will definitely face a bigger test than Haiti in Morocco. And then Brazil needing to impress up against Haiti and Turkey against Paraguay. The final game from the USA's group. That is an 11 p.m. kickoff. Right. So what are we looking forward to tonight, Herc?
46:28Jurgen Klinsmann:Well, Brazil and Haiti. It's the party group. Yes, Haiti is back. Let's just hope they can put up a fight. I think they may put up a fight. Nazzonzo isn't going to be probably playing. He's got some discomfort. But it's Brazil. Can they improve on what they didn't do against Morocco? It's a 1-1, very good draw. But if you look at that midfield, Lucas Paqueta, Guimarães, Casemiro, they really struggled to keep up with the rhythm of the game. It can't just be Vinny Jr., individual magic, or Rafinha moments. Carlo Ancelotti needs a lot more from this team. Carlo Ancelosi does need a lot more from this team.
46:57We know exactly how high the expectations are for Brazil. But we're going to leave this group behind and we're going to fast forward to tomorrow. 4 p.m. kickoff. This one for Jürgen and Jermaine. Germany up in action against Cote d 'Ivoire. They definitely had an impressive opening game, but it was against Curacao. So we'll take that with a grain of salt. This definitely will be a challenge for them. Jürgen, what are you expecting?
47:22Jurgen Klinsmann:Well, what we're expecting, obviously, from a German perspective, is that they come into that game high energy, high rhythm, creating chances and trying to do similar work than the US team did over the first two games. The curious part of that game is really how does the Ivory Coast approach that match? Are they coming defensive minded? or they just want to kind of sit back for half an hour and absorb all the work from the Germans, or are they going face-to-face from the beginning on because they are capable to do it. It's a very good side from the Ivory Coast. So I'm really more curious about their approach.
48:01Jurgen Klinsmann:I think that the Germans will try to keep the tempo high from the first second on. How do they approach this one, JJ? Yeah, Jürgen is right. I think they're coming with a good feeling after that 7-1. But Jürgen is on point. It comes down to Ivory Coast. They're sitting back. They're playing with a little bit of fear or they trust themselves to say, you know what, we go forward. Because Germany will have the ball most of the time in the game. But their main players, I would say most of the spine is from Bayern Munich. They want to play high, especially from the back too. And they want to be in the last part of the game on the field.
48:39They were trying to get their chances because they have individual quality and they know they will get chances. So it would be interesting to see if Ivory Coast is in the transition really good. Jandi or Monday, that's the transition very good. Well, I think if Jürgen or JJ gift us some Germany kits, I think we'll be cheering for Germany tomorrow. What do you guys think? Jürgen, maybe a 1990 kit? Crickets, crickets.
49:05Jurgen Klinsmann:There should be some left over in the garage. Oh, he has them in the garage. World Cup jerseys in the garage. World Cup royalty jerseys in the garage. Where's your World Cup jersey? Likewise. They're in a duffel. My wife doesn't let me take them out. Oh, my goodness. You don't have them hung up? I just finally got a few hung up, but not 1990, you know, World Cup winners jerseys hung up. I was going to say that. JJ, you allowed to hang yours up? To be honest, I have one hanging or both hanging from the German and from American Amplasia. All right. Well, I'm going to try to continue to beg jerseys from these guys.
