In short

The episode is an ESPN FC/Extra Time discussion of major football news plus World Cup squad debates. Topic 1: U.S. World Cup roster announcement and what it implies about team selection. The hosts argue about process and professionalism after Mauricio Pochettino reportedly sent out “in or out” messages (email/carrier pigeon) to players not making the 26, with debate centered on whether those players deserved a phone call.

Key claims

Casey Keller says a call is basic decency; Ali Moreno says acknowledgement matters because players “came up just short”; Stevie Nichol and others criticize the lack of human contact. Notable example: Tanner Tessman—played well in the fall and was in the March window but didn’t make the roster. Topic 2: U.S. tactical uncertainty—starting XI changes, and concerns that the team can’t consistently break down organized teams like Paraguay/Australia; strengths hinge on Weston McKinney and Tyler Adams being at their best, plus Christian Pulisic and striker options. Topic 3: Spain squad/club politics (Barcelona vs Real Madrid), Real Madrid election, and Real’s Vinicius-Mbappé fit; plus Raya Vallecana’s European run and off-field turmoil.

Guests

Ali Moreno, Stevie Nichol, Casey Keller, and Sid Lowe; later Frank Leboeuf joins Extra Time.

0:31Welcome in to the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Dan Thomas, joined by Ali Moreno, Stevie Nichol, and the one, the only Casey Keller joins us because big news today as the US squad was announced for the World Cup, which kicks off very, very soon. This was, of course, leaked on Saturday, so none of this is news. The best thing about today is Jeff Carlisle. Our ESPN FC reports are getting shouted at by Mauricio Pochettino. Here it is. I was wondering if you could elaborate on the situation involving Tanner Tessman. Obviously, he had some good performances for the team in the fall. He was included in the March window, and yet he didn't quite make the roster.

1:11So I was wondering if you could discuss the process that went into his status. No, I think we cannot talk about the players that are not in the roster because I think it's very disrespectful to the players that made the roster because we are going to talk about the players that are not in the roster, which player not to be on the roster. And that for me is very disrespectful. I was a player. When I didn't make the roster, I didn't want that my coach called me. But my coach, the coach of the national team. I coached and I said, oh, which is the reason that I am not in the roster? What are you going to say?

1:47Like when I was sacked in different clubs. One was in Tottenham. And Daniel, the president said, I want to talk with you. What do you want to talk about me if you suck me? You talked before to suck me. No, after. When you made the decision, nothing to say. I don't want to hear nothing. If I understand the player, they didn't make the roster, they don't want to hear me to say, oh, apologize. Oh, whatever. I care. Do you know why I care? Because during two weeks I didn't sleep. And today, still I cannot show the 26 guys that are in front of me because I am thinking in players that are out. That is about to get.

2:29It's not to call. Because if I call, it's about myself. I say, oh, I call. I am very human about calling and giving explanation. Come on. That is bull****. Brilliant. I love Pogacino. That was, by the way, reference to rumours that there was just an email that was sent out which basically said you were in or you were out of the squad. I haven't seen that. That's great. Let's start there, Casey. would you would you like a phone call yes but why do you want a phone call you know you're out i think i think it's just professional yeah you just have a little phone call you say look sorry it's not it's it's not going to happen for you this time around just to look on an email and go oh okay thanks yeah that's great yeah i guess i meant a lot i guess it really helps no i i didn't know you were that soft.

3:18I've known you for a long time. I didn't think you'd need a... To me, it's just unprofessional. That's the way I look at it. It's just that you deserve to talk to somebody and say, okay, thank you, but it's not going to be there. Now, I can still be pissed and I can still do exactly what he did and go, I mean, that was me in 94. Sure. I got the phone call, said, hey, we're going different direction. Okay, thanks. you know right but but it wasn't like oh oh okay did they have emails in nightfall it was carrier pigeon that sent it to me but um but yes there is a level of professionalism and that's not it i don't want to dwell on this but this is quite good fun ali would you like a call yes i would have liked the call i you know it's like it's like breaking up via text you can't Actually, you're in pitch.

4:11However, Casey did it back in 94. If you're asking the players to give everything that they've given to you in the process leading up to this moment, and you've asked them to get invested, to get committed to what you want them to do, and they came up just short, those players that have put in all this work, they do deserve an acknowledgement and a phone call. And it doesn't have to be a long phone call. It just has to be a phone call of understanding and appreciation. Appreciate what you've done. Wasn't quite enough. We're going in a different direction. And that's it. At the very least, you feel like you're seen, that you're acknowledged, that you're part of some sort of picture, that this whole expanding of the player pool wasn't just a rhetoric, that it was actually an honest thought from Mauricio Pochettino.

5:01When you don't give a phone call and you don't acknowledge the existence of these players, They're just another number and that is another way to treat the players. Yeah, I'm shocked you have to call them Yeah, I'm absolutely shocked What sort of human being does that send an email? I mean really? Yeah, and you don't and as Ali said You're not looking for a explanation or a long conversation Just common decency just cut to see to give me a call and say look I'm sorry, but you haven't made the 26. That's all you need right well, Dan that's terrible you and i unfortunately had some difficult news at times can you imagine that our doctors had called just sent an email and said here you go guys okay so what if we were going with that well but i'm just saying there's there's it's true there's positions in the world that part of the job isn't nice sure if you enjoy having to call someone and tell them they don't make a world cup you're a sociopath right but you know it's part of your job a policeman knows it's part of his job at times to give bad information it's a doctor's job at times to give bad information a coach's time to give bad information that is part of the job and you do it because it's part of the job and please don't come out of then in the press conference and ask people to feel sorry for you because you've had sleepless nights oh i'm sorry yeah it's a bit strange yeah oh feel Sorry about feel sorry for me that I've had sleepless nights and in picking this team Don't feel sorry about the guys that are left out.

6:34They are not deserving of a phone call. Yeah acknowledge mean don't acknowledge them Are you joking? Okay, let's let's talk about the football So we have our emails and carrier pigeons. Yeah, let's look at the perspective starting 11 Casey What emotion does this give you? Um I've talked about it a lot. I have no idea what Pochettino is doing, right? There's been nothing in the two years of preparation that gives me any idea other than these are the guys playing at bigger clubs, playing regularly, have had a lot of experience with the national team and in international football. But there's nothing.

7:11I've never seen this lineup in a match. And if I did see it and maybe it came up a little bit short, the next match, there's been nine changes. so there's been nothing that I've worked with that I've said oh hey I like the way this back four works together they made some good progress from this difficult match and then this guy kind of came in and he it's truly been a coin toss every time a roster comes out and every time a lineup comes out so I can't tell you what's trending what's been good what's been where it's improved because there's been such drastic changes from squad to squad to lineup to lineup when you take a look at that starting 11 ali where are its strengths is that a loaded question how dare you that was just a question um well i do think that playing at his best christian pulisic is obviously the flag bearer for this team now we haven't seen his best for a long time.

8:17He needs to be at that sort of level. Balogun has had a really good season, has been scoring goals. The issue for me is that there are going to be a lot of times in the World Cup in which this team is going to have to spend that time defending and not so much focusing on a transition with Christian Pulisic or Balogun scoring a goal. So it concerns me. I know that you were going for strength. It concerns me that this team, if it's going to spend a lot of time defending that you're depending on a guy like Tim Ream that I have seen up close and personal not a decade ago this season I saw it right in front of me when he's playing with Charlotte I was watching the LA Galaxy and he went on a sprint against Gabriel Peck one of the outstanding wingers for the LA Galaxy and it wasn't even a race and I thought at that moment good lord is this where the United States are defensively that he's going to be starting for you.

9:16That concerns me. The goalkeeping position concerns me. If we're going to look for an area of strength, I suppose that I would say Weston McKinney has played really well this season. And if Tyler Adams is healthy, then that midfield is going to give you a lot of activity. But I'm trying to reach here, Dan. I'm sort of kind of having to find areas of strength. I don't think you can actually go out and say, this is what this team does best. Because we haven't quite figured it out just yet, to Casey's point. There's one thing. McKinney and Adams have to be at the best. Right. Because if they're not, neither the forwards nor the defence is going to be at the best either.

9:58Because if they don't stop the opposition getting to that back line, Alex talking about Rehm, they also have to get the ball and get it to Pulisic or get it to Ware or get it to Balagan. So for me, most of it hinges on those two. If those two are at their best, they've got a chance. If they're not and they have poor games, then I don't know where the points are coming from. The other side of that is Serginio's been injured a lot. And Serginio, for me, is a wing-back. We've just brought the group up, so let's focus on it. This is fine, isn't it? It depends. It's fine. if the United States players all turn up and they're at their best, then they can win all these games.

10:43Turkey, maybe not. Turkey, tough, yeah. But Paraguay and Australia, guaranteed, will fight to the last breath. And that is the problem. Because we're not sure that the United States can go and outplay anybody. But they have better players. The US have better players than Paraguay. They have better players than Australia. The way that we're talking, You're talking about the US always being on the back foot. They won't be in most of their games. Because you take a look at this World Cup, you've got some great teams. You've got France, you've got Spain, and then you've got a whole bunch of mediocre teams that the US should be able to compete, should be able to beat, in fact.

11:26Well, should be, coulda, woulda, will they? I mean, and that's the problem they've got, particularly with two of the sides, with Paraguay and Australia. that if it becomes a battle, which team do you want to be on? I mean, we've sat here over the last, particularly 12 months, but longer, talking about how, where was the guts in this team? Where was the fight? Where was the desire? I mean, how many times have we sat and said that? Too many times. When the only thing you know when you play against Paraguay, and Australia in particular, is there's going to be a fight. They don't want to play an open attack in a game of football.

12:01They want to fight. And so, if it becomes a fight, I mean, how big a favourites do the United States become then? Let's just for sake of argument assume that it doesn't become a fight, which it will. But it becomes about the United States breaking down teams, outplaying teams. I don't see it. This is not a team that actually can break down a well-organised backline, midfield line of teams like, say, for example, Paraguay. and Australia. Now, the U.S. fans will suggest, well, we've already played these teams and we've beaten these teams. Yes. Friendly international. World Cup, completely different conversation.

12:45And if you want to have that conversation about friendly internationals, then don't ignore the fact that you got housed by Turkey 30 minutes from here in a game that finished 2-1 but really wasn't all that competitive. The United States against Australia, against Paraguay, yes, they will have the ball. Yes, it seemed like they would have the initiative because being the home country against this sort of opposition, you should be the team that actually goes and tries to break teams down. But that's not the makeup of the United States. They don't have the quality of players to go and break, consistently break teams down.

13:21Hence why it becomes a fight and hence why Paraguay and Australia have a much better chance than people are talking about. It's a little bit negative. too it's also factual but also the results and the performances over this two-year period haven't really given us the optimism there's moments the obviously the uruguay match where you think okay that's turned a corner now we're gonna see this new and then the inconsistency comes in again and and we're looking at it and we're just thinking was there something to hold on to was there a defensive structure was there to ali's point that there was nothing there was nothing in that time period where you're saying this is what the us are they get a little better here they have some good performances from key players like stevie talked about but we haven't seen it well there'll be a lot more talk on football america's and when we ask jrgen klinsman how did he drop landon donovan was it pigeon was it email was it via his barbers uh we'll be discussing that tonight 8 30 eastern live on espn plus if you've ever wanted real energy without choking down something that tastes like regret bucked up is the answer the flavor is the thing people keep coming back for insanely delicious which is not a phrase usually associated with energy drinks and they're built on real science-backed ingredients clean energy that actually works without the garbage you don't want.

15:48The Spain squad's announced this week and the big story certainly the Catalan newspapers have thoroughly enjoyed eight representatives from Barcelona zero for Madrid as we welcome in Sid Lowe to the show. Sid this has never happened before is it? Never has there been a Spain squad going to a World Cup without any Real Madrid players? Yeah that's right it's the first time that this has happened in history It's true, obviously, that over the last 10 years or so, there's been a progression towards more and more Barcelona players and ever fewer Real Madrid players. Because, of course, that's a product of the nature of the market, the nature of the kind of players that Real Madrid pursue.

16:24The fact that Barcelona are producing more players through the youth system and make it to the first team than Real Madrid are. And so, essentially, Barcelona have had far more good quality Spanish players to choose from. And this time around, in truth, while this has caused quite a lot of noise, I think this is an entirely natural choice. I don't think there's a single player that you look at and you look at this squad and you think well he should have been in then this is a this is largely I think an almost entirely uncontroversial squad it's a good squad isn't it boys?

16:55You don't want to play them. I know Spanish is not your strength Dan but Si! Si! Si! Si! Fuerte! Muy fuerte! It is quite a fuerte. I mean, look, there's a few doubts there, I think. And obviously those doubts really focus on the two players that made them so different at the European Championships, the two wingers, Nico Williams and Laminya Mahal. Laminya Mahal has got an injury and we don't expect him to play, at least we don't expect him to start until possibly the third game at the earliest. We think he might get minutes in the first couple of games. We've seen, obviously, that Nico Williams has struggled with injuries all season.

17:32and I think that's one of the reasons why we've seen Victor Muñoz get given an opportunity. And so I think there's a couple of doubts in those positions. Obviously, they've had doubts as well at Central Defence, which is why Robin Le Normand, for example, who was a starter at the European Championships, isn't in because he's not had a particularly great season. But yeah, I think you're right. You look at this squad and you say that it's got balance, it's got stability because there's not a huge amount of change from before. But it's a relatively significant amount of change in terms of starting XI if you look back at the side that won the European Championships and started that final against England.

18:04Sid, as Casey's here, let's talk goalkeepers. You've got the best goalkeeper in the Premier League, arguably the best goalkeeper in La Liga, but neither of them will start. Well, not necessarily. And this is a growing debate. And I actually, I really liked Luis de la Fuente's response to this. And I liked his response to this because, of course, there's an inevitable thing in Spain that the focus is always put on the players from Madrid and Barcelona. And so since Joanne Garcia joined Barcelona, And all year, the debate, and the only real debate that's been in Spain, is about whether Joanne Garcia should be in the Spain squad.

18:36Now, of course, we all knew that that was a debate that seemed a bit weird and a bit forced because it was about third-choice goalkeeper and it wasn't a particularly big deal. But as soon as he was in the squad, that debate would become being about being the first-choice goalkeeper. You know, once he's in, it won't be about whether he should be in the squad anymore. It'll be about whether he should start. And, of course, that's partly focused and partly dominated by the dominance of a club as big as Marseille. And the same thing happens with Real Madrid. and De La Fuente when he was asked about this in the press conference to announce the squad he said well why doesn't anyone ask me about David Raya you know you go on about whether it's John Garcia or Unai Simon but what about David Raya who as you rightly say Dan has been the best player in possibly the best player in the champions of the Premier League and possibly deserves an opportunity but he has not been the focus of the debate.

19:20Who would you have Kaye that history? Well, I think because of the way the process went, I think you have to stick with Unai Simon. Really? But I think if you would have made that decision earlier and actually made the competition open, I thought John Garcia's had a phenomenal season. But also, you know, David Raya. But again, are you going to start the guy that has one cap? Or are you going to start the guy that was part of the whole process? So I think either you say, to me you give Unai Simon the tournament because he was your guy going forward. Right. Now, I think afterwards, you say, okay, let's see where that competition is.

20:04We've got a lot more time to debate that. Did you want to join in? I was just going to say, from the manager's point of view, you can't go wrong with whichever one plays, right? Sure. The question is, if you change Unai Simon, is that going to affect your back four? That's the question. Not who's good enough to start. You may carry on, Dan. Thank you very much. Good point. Thank you. Away from Spain, Sid, there will be an election as to who will be the new president, Real Madrid. Obviously, Fiorentino Perez up against Recalme. Just explain in layman's terms what this means. Okay, in the most simple terms of all, this means that on the 7th of June, there will be a vote.

20:54And every single member of Real Madrid, every season ticket holder at Real Madrid, every member of the club will have one vote. And it will be a vote and it will be a straight vote between Florentino, Benef and the rest of his candidacy, which of course includes the rest of the board members and against between him and Enrique Raquelme and his board members. One man, one vote. Very, very simple. Now, obviously, there's a lot more to it than that, but the fundamentals are this. Now, what makes this most interesting, I think, really, is that we've not seen elections at Real Madrid for 20 years. And the reason for that is that Ferencino has been unopposed for 20 years.

21:25It's very difficult to put together a candidacy to stand for the presidency of Real Madrid. It's very difficult to gather the correct amount of support and the correct and in particular the money to back your candidacy to be able to do so. And so what makes this so striking is it's been two decades since we've seen it happen. Let's talk about the relationship, shall we, of Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe. J. Stevie and Craig and Mac had discussed it at length yesterday. This was the front page of Ask Last Week. Condemned to understand each other. This is the fact that you're stuck with it. It's like brothers, isn't it?

21:55You're just stuck with them. You better learn to love them. Jose Mourinho touted as the man who's going to come together and bring these two stars together, Sid. I'm not buying this for a second. Well, I think, look, I don't think there's necessarily a kind of irredeemable split between them that can't necessarily be fixed in competitive terms. And Casey and Stephen Shaw can give us examples of teammates they've had that didn't necessarily get on. And so I think from Mourinho's point of view, it's not necessarily about making them love each other. It's about making them accept each other and work with each other and work in a way that functions.

22:34There have been various moments over the course of the season where they've made gestures of trying to kind of, if you like, externalise the fact that they can get on to try and externalize the idea that this relationship is fine really. And I think there have been two different elements to this. One has been, if you like, the sense of them being different people with different ideals. And the other, of course, has been a purely footballing relationship, which is that they kind of get in each other's way. And I think Mourinho needs to deal with both of those things. But I don't think he necessarily needs to make them love each other.

23:01The story so far for both of these players in playing together has actually been divided in. When Mbappe's not doing well, Vinny's doing well. When Vinny's not doing well, then Mbappe's doing well. It's never both of them doing well together. In fact, they are elevated when the other one is struggling. When the other one's struggling on the field, when the other one's struggling off the field, when the other one's struggling with whatever. The other one is elevated. And it's elevated also by the fans. Early on, when Vinny was having his issues with Xavi Alonso and he wasn't playing well and Mbappe was scoring goals, then it seemed like the fans were all about this being Mbappe's Real Madrid.

23:41Then Mbappe stopped scoring goals. Arbeloa comes in. Vini elevates his level of play. He's now scoring goals. Mbappe is having a trip with his girlfriend out in Sardinia. And so now it becomes Vini's team elevated by the fans and we don't want Mbappe. Mbappe has to go out the door. there has to be an understanding from the players, the fans, anybody that is involved with Real Madrid, that this team will succeed or will more likely succeed if both of them elevate their level of play at the same time. And that is the part that is going to be difficult to be done because, as Sid just mentioned, they get on each other's way.

24:24Mbappe doesn't want to play down the middle, even though he's scoring a bunch of goals, which is something I don't quite understand. and he starts wandering and venturing out into areas that get in the way of Vinny. And Vinny, when he gets into a more central position, which he should, and they could play off of each other and actually utilize each other, then he feels uncomfortable and he ends up going back to the left wing position. They themselves, if they just understand that if they play off of each other, not against each other, not without each other, but off of each other, they will play at a high level and score goals and Real Madrid will win matches, that cannot be so difficult to understand.

25:02Sid, why haven't they announced Mourinho yet? Well, this brings us back to the question you asked three or four minutes ago, which is about the presidential elections. Because while they could announce Mourinho, while they could see that through, it would be seen as not quite right to announce the new signing of a manager when you may not be the president after the 7th of June. So in other words, there's, if you like, a kind of a, what would you call it, a politeness element here, a sense of doing the right thing, of handling it in the right way. And so that gets put on hold for the time being.

25:32Meanwhile, focusing on Barcelona and speculation is who is going to come in and replace Robert Lewandowski. And who's out on the right-hand side? England's great captain, Harry Kane. This is what Oli Holness had to say about the possibility of Harry Kane moving to Barcelona. Yes, Kane is staying at Bayern, and Barca have no money anyway. There you are, Sid. I love the fact that Honus is incapable of just saying something and just saying he's staying, it's fine. He always has to have the little dig, doesn't he? He always has to have the little dig in the ribs of the elbow that says, well, you lot have got no cash, so tough luck.

26:14It wouldn't be the first time by the way that he said that and it certainly wouldn't be the first time that he turned out to be wrong. For what it's worth, I do see this as a very, very difficult signing for a club like Barcelona to do. Meanwhile, Sid, Julian Alvarez named Player of the Year for the second year running at Atletico Madrid, but he's not a happy bunny. No, and to be honest with you, I don't know why he's been named Player of the Year for a second year running. There's no way he's Atletico Madrid's best player this season. But anyway, that's possibly another debate for another day.

26:43He, I think, has been clear that he's not entirely convinced about the idea of continuing for almost the whole year. There was that period in the middle of the season in which his performance level was very, very low, and Atletico I think dealt with that with quite a lot of tact actually and they said that you know we understand and we're trying to support him we're trying to see him through this and actually the way they dealt with it with that kind of tactful approach was was so uh how would I put this kind of empathetic so gentle that you wondered if there was a really serious problem if actually at some point someone was going to admit that actually we're dealing with something quite significant now it doesn't seem to be the case um and and now so Atletico Madrid now in a position where they have to decide what they want to do about this what kind of fee they would want for him, whether they'll let him go, whether they would take players in part exchange, who they would want him to go to.

27:26And of course, I say of course, I suspect that Atletico Madrid would much rather see Paris Saint-Germain turn up with loads and loads of money than see Julian go to another club in Spain. Yeah, and that club in Spain obviously is Barcelona, Sid. Yeah, which of course has been the case all year. And you may remember that press conference, I think it was before the Arsenal game when And Diego Simeone was asked about Julian Alvarez off the back of the fact that there'd been some talk in England, maybe that Arsenal were interested in him as well. And the English media got very excited because they said he was opening the door.

28:01I think what he was really doing was saying, you know, go away, you're not the only ones. And he said, well, you know, lots of people could be interested in Julian. Arsenal could be interested in him. Barcelona could be interested in him. PSG could be interested in him. And now you think, actually, maybe he really was naming the three clubs. Meanwhile, this week, we've got the Champions League final at the weekend, but the very much appetizer to that is the conference final between Crystal Palace and Casey's former side, Raya Veacana. Who would have thought, Casey, when you were playing for Raya, that they'd end up in a European final? We got to a quarterfinal. European final. Yes. Well, if you keep adding more and more finals, eventually you're going to get there. Don't dilute the success of Raya. Well, you dilute the competition. how is that up no it's it's excellent for rio and it's excellent for crystal palace you know two sides that you wouldn't you know come straight to your mind that they're going to be in a european competition final so to give the the fans that opportunity i think it's cool uh said this of course a huge story a huge surprise given the mess that rio is off the pitch and on it yeah Yeah, absolutely.

30:06I mean, that's the key here. And I was talking to Jorge de Frutos the other day about this, and he said, well, you know, in part, exactly as Casey's saying, in part, the Conference League is there for this, for teams like us to have an opportunity to have a European adventure, to have a European success, to maybe reach a final. And of course, if you are a Spanish team in a European competition, you would anticipate you have an opportunity to go a reasonable distance. that said there really aren't clubs like raya waikano out there because as you say it's it's it's an it's a real basket case of a club and they do so much wrong and they seem so so gloriously brilliantly and enjoyably out of place in european competition in a stadium that's only got three sides in a stadium that's falling down where there's an enormous divide between the fans and the president where the players themselves this year have not been able to train at the training ground because it's not in sufficiently good condition in which they had to play a home game against Atletico Madrid away because their own ground was not in good enough condition in which the players union put out a statement saying that the Rio de Cana squad had had enough of this and they were demanding the most basic of facilities needed to play professional football in which the president of the club called the fans what was the phrase now drunkards layabouts and brain dead.

31:23So, you know, things are not good. And yet the team... Exactly, it really is. We could change the name of extra time to Drunken Slayer. Just have that the caption when Stevie and Craig are on. It's, I mean, it really is extraordinary. But obviously in that adversity, I think, comes some of the strength of the squad. I think it's a very, very close group, the squad, with the manager who's got, I think, a very high degree of sensitivity and sensibility towards the way that the players feel there's an incredible connection between the fans and the players if not between the fans and the manager or the sorry the fans and the president or the players and the president and so while they do a lot of things wrong somewhere in there something very very special has been built even back when i was there you had no idea where you were training really day to day we would be at one place and then maybe we'd be in the athletic stadium and then maybe we'd be at the at vayakas in the stadium and then we i had one my spanish wasn't very good early on and i didn't read something and i showed up at the wrong place and i had to call and i wasn't late for training but i was late for the time you were supposed to be there and and yeah every morning i would call the goalkeeping coach just to confirm where are we training today.

32:44And we used to think about the successes we had on the field, the successes that the club is having now on the field. And you just thought, if you just got the infrastructure right, it could be such a great little club. You know, you could just... And still what, 40 years later? It's worse. Yep. And you just think, how is that possible? and you're still finishing mid-table in La Liga. Sid, are you going to the game? Fortunately, I'm not, no. I was really looking forward to this one, but it hasn't been possible to go. And it will be a great occasion, I think, as well. And, you know, Casey knows, having been there, the connection with the neighbourhood, because bear in mind, this is in a neighbourhood of Madrid that was separate from the city, but has been swallowed up by the city, that's very proud of its kind of working-class heritage, that sees itself as separate from the rest of the country, that has a very, very defined identity.

33:38And it's a place where it's a lot of fun to go and watch football. It feels like a club from 40 years ago, that kind of, if you like, the last one standing of a different era. But Sid, do you think that's going to be a bunch of the Vegas community travelling to East Germany for a match? 11 ,000 are going, which is extraordinary, isn't it? And it's a really, really big deal for them, 11 ,000 going. There was actually a story this week which I think defines it quite nicely actually and defines the way that you look at Raya Viacana, that kind of sense that everything's wrong but at the same time everything's kind of alright.

34:12There were a number of fans that got caught out in a scam which was basically obviously someone offering to charter a flight for a relatively low fee. They would charter a flight and take Raya fans there and of course lots of them signed up and the person who took the money just disappeared. and so the response to this apart from the initial tragedy of my god you know the greatest moment in your entire history you're not going to get there a crowdfunding account was put together and the players started pouring money into it to ensure that their fans didn't miss out on this and I think that says something in the end in the end that's kind of if you like as I say the kind of the portrait of this club that everything is wrong but somewhere in all that mess there is a way of bringing them together and making things okay again Great stuff as always Sid just a reminder we'll be reflecting on that game on the next edition of ESPN FC Plus continuing to count down to the start of the World Cup.

35:05It's the Champions League final this weekend. There were doubts about the fitness of Dembele and Hakimi. Both trained today and what will be only Tuesday, so they'll be fine to start against Arsenal this weekend. There was, of course, doubt about Lionel Messi when he came off in that extraordinary game between Inter Miami and Philadelphia. In the end though, it's just fatigue and he will be fine. Does that affect Stevie's bracket for the World Cup? This is quite the long YouTube video as Stevie takes us right from kickoff to the final. You can check that out over on our YouTube page. That's quite the microphone too.

37:21That's a great question. Contract obligations. Casey, Stevie and Ali still with us as well.

37:32Welcome in to the latest edition of Extra Time. Casey is here, Ali as well, Stevie and Frank the Buffett. They insisted on coming out for Extra Time. Frank, lovely to have you with us. Thank you. I didn't insist for anything, but I came over. I was watching Vinnie Jones' documentary, and I saw the famous Wimbledon-Liverpool final with Steve Nichols. Oh, cheers, Frank. Bring that on. One of the lowest points of Stevie's career. I know. He wants so many things, so he can let Wimbledon winning once. You know, it's OK. Stevie has got some very interesting takes on that final. OK. I saw Frank on the Netflix documentary The Bus.

38:16I wanted to watch this actually. Can he comment on the whole event and has the documentary changed his opinion of the 2010 South Africa World Cup? Frank, for those who don't know what happened, just give a very brief summary before we get your opinion on how you were portrayed. The documentary is about the strike. the 2010 national team went on that day, well like two days before the last game of the group stages in the South Africa World Cup. And what happened with the coach and the fact that the half-time, the second game, Nicolas Nelkos said some words to him, and not the words that were repeated to the media, but it became such a big story that even the president of France, Mr Sarkozy, said something has to happen and they kicked out Nicolas Sannelka from the squad.

39:12And in fact, the players disagreed and said, we want to go on strike and we want Nicolas to be back. But Raymond Dominic did everything to make sure that he will not be drawn on his own and everybody is going to be hurt. And this is what happened with the strike and with all the story. You really have to see that documentary because it's very interesting. And I have to say that I always say that the players, because I was working with William Gallas, where the story started with him, because he wasn't the captain, he should have been. And he put, and Raymond Domenech put Patriceva in that position.

39:50And I always say to the players to talk, and they never talked, and it's crazy. But after the documentary, I was so troubled by the story that I called Nicolas Anelka. And I said, why you didn't talk? You should have gone to media and talk and explain what happened. I mean according to the documentary, Raymond Dominic is guilty for everything and the players were very maybe innocent people, maybe too young to react, I don't know, but they weren't guilty for everything and and media, L 'Equipe, the only sport media in France, didn't apologize 16 years after for what they put in the front page with such bad words Nicolas Sennicat never said.

40:34So it's huge, it's really big and he says a lot about Raymond Dominic, the French Federation at the time and also the newspaper. Okay. Which side of the... Is it in French? Why have they put this in? This has got disaster in all over it. Which side of the fence are you on when it comes to allowing wives and partners to join players at World Cup camps? 1986, Stevie, I imagine that you didn't have wives or partners. You tell a great story, I think you've told this publicly before, about who was your roommate and what happened when him and his wife had an argument. Oh Arthur

41:22So I was rooming with Arthur Olberst and this was in Actually this was a pre-World Cup We were in Albuquerque And we got back to the room And with a time difference I'm sat in that bed, Arthur's in that bed And it all starts off Normal, hello, how you doing Blah blah blah And then the tone of it started changing So it finally ended up with Arthur saying okay I'm coming home and I'll get a job as a plumber.

41:56Was it ever in the conversation for Eleanor to join you at the World Cup? No and that never never was a thing at all. And listen I call me old-fashioned but when When you're away playing at a World Cup, you need to concentrate on what you're there for. And as much as we all love seeing the kids and the wives and everything else, the other stuff takes over. Because obviously, your wife thinks she's the most important thing. Now when you're at a World Cup, the most important thing is the World Cup, but you're not at home anymore but the wives and the girlfriends don't see it that way and then you throw kids on top of that so yeah in my opinion no you're away doing a job basically it's a fantastic job but you're doing a job and you need to concentrate on it fully so in my opinion um no i don't think the partner should go there and unless you're a heartless husband or partner you are concerned about what's going on with your wife and your kids, the ticket sorted out.

43:13You seem to have your attention divided from what your actual job is and making sure that your family is taken care of. Now the way I approach this say for Copa America, which we were gone for a month, it was basically my wife just, she didn't come to the tournament, she just stayed at home, she was there with the kids, we would talk, we would have a time frame in which we would talk every night and then that's it. Was becoming a plumber ever mentioned? No, it was not, no it was not, and I'm not very handy when it comes to plumbing, so I would have been useless regardless. But the point being is that even though it's hard to be away from the family, it becomes harder when they're there, but they're not really there.

44:00And so now you have to think about their well-being while you're also trying to figure out what their well-being is for you and the team in preparation for you, what you have in front of you. I think one of the tricky parts about this is, I don't know what it was like at Liverpool back in the day, Steve, but I'm assuming, like most English teams, you weren't in a hotel the night before a match. Home matches, no? Home matches, no. No. So, you probably had some of your best matches ever at Anfield when you were with your family and with that and slept and got up in the morning and went and played a match.

44:33So now you're in this concentration when you're away from that. So you think Moise should come? There's so many different ways of looking at it. Yeah, that's what I mean. I think there could be a balance. I think it also depends on individual relationships that you have with your spouse or partner and how supportive they are or how demanding they are when you're in this environment where you need to be 100 % focused. There's absolutely no question that if you get a good night's sleep in your own bed the day before a game and you turn up and play, right. I don't think anybody would argue with that.

45:06However, the problem is, is when something arises to do with the kids or your wife or whatever. example being we were playing Middlesbrough my wife ended up going to the hospital in the middle of the night now you don't foresee those things right so you just don't know what's going to turn up and you can't you can't legislate for it so the fact that they take them away now in my opinion is the best thing get them away again and concentrate on your job and unless it's something it's a real emergency then you don't want somebody waking you up at three in the morning. I think there can be a balance.

45:48I think there can be times when, yes, you are away, and then you can have some time with the family, and then you can get back, and then post-match, you can maybe have a dinner. You can kind of be together for a little bit, see the kids, and then be like, okay, now we're getting prepped for the next match. So, cup final. Every cup final, any cup final, for example, the waves would be over but we'd never see them right we never saw them till after the game so they would they would just we would concentrate on what we got to do and the waves were looked after taken out for dinner we'd go to a show but we never saw them now the difference tv is that's two or three days not yeah that's three or four weeks yeah frank your thoughts Yeah, for World Cup, because the question includes the World Cup and only the World Cup.

46:41And for us, you know, it was like we go to the final of the World Cup. So it's like two months. And on top of the preparation, you start the World Cup a month before we prepared in 98. And so we had the chance. Emé Jaquet, what he did, he organized something for us every game, after every game of the group stages where our wives had a chance to come with us and stay overnight for the group stages. But after that, and when we started the last 16, for example, they were just coming after the game, say hi, we had a drink and bye-bye. That's it. And we were going back to the camp. But that's it. I think for me, I liked it because I wanted to have some news about the kid, how she was feeling.

47:26My ex-wife was living in England with the kid. So I wanted to see how things were going so but and just to say the truth at the time with 98 we had funds but that's it we couldn't have you know social networks and and and videos and see the the kids so so it was a hard time and again because you you were I was two months away from my family so it's it's hard to cope with it and I was quite pleased with the the schedule that they measure keep put on it's It's really easier now, by the way, because you can now have FaceTime, you can actually have access to being part of your family's life while you're away.

48:06That was not available back in the day. I used to get a Red Cross parcel every four days. I wonder what it would be. Did it contain any crisps? Choclets, newspapers. Every four days I would get a new parcel. Because you don't buy a newspaper where you work? In Mexico City? No, in Mexico City. In Mexico in the middle of nowhere. Yeah, yeah. Oh, get me the sun. Go down to the shop and get me the sun, will you? You're not allowed to read the sun. No. No smart-hot-alec comments, by the way, on that question from me. Moving on. You're very proud. Very proud of myself. You've grown up. You gave me the look.

48:40Yeah. And we decided to move on. Frank has upset a lot of Spurs players, Ali. I'm not sure if you saw this. Casey is a former team. He was really critical of them celebrating on Sunday, staying up. But you know one of the big reasons why they were celebrating? You know how many contract clauses now say if you get relegated, your contract gets cut in half? Yep. So, Frank, disappointed with Spurs players for engaging, celebrating with 60 ,000 fans after the game. With 60 ,000 fans, Frank, in the stadium after a match thanking the players and the coach, you would have said disappointed for players walking off.

49:16You're a bit of a hypocrite. Wow. Take that off. Take that. Oh, wow, that's a big word. I just want to respect the club, to respect my fans. And when you had such a bad season, what do you want to celebrate? You don't want to celebrate anything. You want to apologize. You want your fans to forgive you. So you just go. You say, sorry, guys. We try to do our best. Go to the shower. And that's it. Because you don't deserve anything. You don't need some claps. You don't need some relief. You don't need anything. And fans, I can agree with Dan Steller that the fact that you are relieved and you're going to stay in the Premier League, but the players, they would have been relegated.

50:05Half of the team would have gone away and signed for another club and so disappeared. So I care about the fans. I care about the club. I'm sorry, the players. Just be humble. Just say, sorry, guys. Get out. You should be embarrassed, really. You're a Spurs player to be in this position. Just celebrate. What a relief. I think there's a point where you're like, yes, we didn't have the ultimate disaster, but there has to be a level of humility there because, yes, you never, ever should have been in that position. Part of the reason that you're celebrating that. Oh, there's nonsense. No, no, no. Just hey.

50:43Sorry, guys. Sorry. No. No, but on top of it, it's not a small club who survived the relegation. We're talking about Tottenham Spurs. That's why I'm saying that. I was in Laval. We couldn't save ourselves and we went down. That couldn't have been such a relief for a small club like Laval. But we're talking about Tottenham Spurs. And for the second season in a row, they've almost been relegated. So, no, I'm sorry. I step up and I still disagree with what the players did. For Casey, with players like Christian Pulisic, Florian Balogun, Ricardo Pepe, Malik Tillman, Wester McKinney, and Gio Reyne, is this the best attacking team that the US men's national team has ever brought to the World Cup?

51:36I think there's an argument for that. but we're still waiting to see what the identity of that group is because I think if let's go back to the Belgium match for 30 minutes I'm watching this match and I'm going wow they're attacking so well and then as soon as Belgium flipped a switch that great attack didn't matter anymore because you're two nil down before that great attack had a chance to outscore your opponent which squad are comparing it to?

52:10When you take a look at the attacking prowess of previous World Cup teams. Well, we never were really known for our attacking prowess. Right. Right. I mean, so you're looking at where we were never a team that you were going to say the US is going to go outscore your opponent. Look, we got lucky against Portugal in 2002 that we had one of those matches where we scored three goals. that wasn't the way the U.S. won games. Not in World Cups. So for us, it was about staying competitive, getting a goal, trying to hang on to something. And so I think, yeah, I think this has an opportunity. Now, I think we're all questioning what this World Cup is going to look like because you mentioned it before.

53:01There's a couple of good teams. there's a whole bunch of teams in the middle and there's a couple teams that are going to get thumped. And trying to figure that out who can perform at the time and I'm still not sure this is a team against Paraguay, against Australia who Stevie mentioned earlier they're fighters, they're grinders they're going to give everything that you're going to then just go outscore your opponents. Frank, we talked about this on the show and this is sponsored this question does it really matter how a coach tells you you're not going to the World Cup Pepe hung up on Berhalter when he found out he was left out is this only a story because the roster leaked and people need something to talk about in case you've missed it Pochettino sent out an email which basically said you're in or you're out he justified that today in the press conference saying what am I going to phone them and say you know if it was me I don't need an explanation I don't want to even hear from the coach Frank I wonder what you would say

54:03I think for certain players it does matter. I remember Imejaquet going to Cantona, going to Manchester to tell him that he wanted him but as a striker. And I think Eric disagreed so that's why he didn't come for the World Cup. I think Imejaquet, no, Romain Dominic went to see Thierry Henry to say he's not in the World Cup. Thierry Henry said, oh come on, take me. I would be my fourth one. He never played, but he came. And I think for some players, yeah, you need to be psychologically ready to explain to them why you take them or not. For me, Emi Jacquet made a deal with me two months before. He said, I'm sorry, but Laurent Blanc and Marcel Desai will play.

54:48That's my decision. If you agree, you can come. But I don't want to hear anything in the media. if you don't agree you you you can go on holidays and I'm gonna take somebody else so two months before I knew but but I think it's important for some players to explain why they did they are there and but it shouldn't be a big story after that because that's that's the decision I take I take Thomas Torel so many players you could get you have like 30 players 35 players and you will be will have players disappointed. So you have to make a choice and everybody is a coach. Everybody is a national team coach right now where he's going to decide why I should have taken that one and not that one.

55:34It's a hard decision from for every every coach. So for some of them you have to tell them but from others you take your own decision and it has to be accepted. Everyone agreed during the show that you would like a phone call? I mean the thing is is while I understand that the player pool may be 55 players really came down to two or three players that didn't make it. And so those are the two or three players that you just need to have the decency, common decency of picking up the phone and saying, listen, it's not going to work out this time. I know you're disappointed and we're going to move forward and this, that, and the other.

56:10And that's it. That's it. That's the length of the conversation and that's the extent of the conversation. As a player, you just want to be acknowledged and that your work was worth something and that it came down to a decision. and it wasn't you, it was somebody else that was picked, but you want to be acknowledged. This is running away from that acknowledgement. And I think it is embarrassing behavior from a national team coach. It's running away from your responsibility as a manager to acknowledge your players. These guys, whether they're in the World Cup or not, they have been your players for the time that they have spent together.

56:46So they deserve that much respect and he did not provide that. That is embarrassing. Frank, is the Champs-France squad the best team ever fielded for a World Cup, including yours?

57:00Well, we'll see. We'll see if they win the World Cup. We could say that, but definitely offensively, they're absolutely fantastic. And maybe, maybe better than the 98 team, for sure. But defensively and in the middle of the park, I'm sorry. I'm not going to compare my team and that team. We have so many question marks about the two center backs, but also in the middle of the park, where, you know, we had De Sailly and Blanc at the back. We had Deschamps, Petit, Vieira, Bogossian in the middle of the park. They were amazing. So, no, I don't think they're better, but offensively, it's a big armada, and I think they can create entertainment, crazy entertainment for sure.

57:51What about the depth of the squad? Because I think France is so deep. And so, I mean, if you do have a couple players go down. So you're saying this squad is much better than France's squad? No. That's what I feel like you're alluding on. That's the direction he was going. I'm just saying, it's a very, very strong squad. And it's all relative, because Frank is talking about question marks for France. Well, yes, there may be some question marks for France, but the question marks for France are not comparable to the question marks for Curaçao. For goodness sake. Wow. So, you know, we're talking about one of the one or two very favorites to win this whole thing.

58:31So, yeah, they may have a question here or there, but those are minor questions, not big questions. Let's answer your question, Casey. Sure. What's the percentage chance that you ask out of that group? Do we have the group to show people? But also remember that you're talking about eight of the third place finishers get out of the group. Yes. So, I mean, the U.S. should get out of this group. Okay. So when I usually, when they ask me, how far is the team going to go? How far is the team going to go? No, that's not the question. The case is percentage. Well, you got to get out of the group first.

59:01No, that's all it is. Percentage get out of the group. 70, 80%. There we go. 70, 80%. Scott, Stevie, you've made a noise. 80%. 80 % Three of the eight Third place Teams Get out of the group If you're at home You should get out of the group That squad You should get out of the group As we said in the show Shoulder woulda coulda Maybe According to your bracket You did have them Getting out of the group Alright good job Stevie I'm going to go Stevie Available 98 % No what percent 78 50 50 % Ali To get out of the group Yes 75 % 75 % Yeah To get out of the group Come on, less than 80. Come on. Just...

59:45Wow. Scott McTominay's overhead kick goal is going to be featured on a special£20 banknote introduced by the Bank of Scotland. Stevie, what other goals in Scotland's history would be worthy to put on a special... Has Scotland ever gone out of a goal? Easily. No, they've never gone out of a goal. That's the easiest question. Go on. Archie Gamble. Archie Gamble? Just remind people what that was. So in 1978 Scotland went to Argentina for the World Cup and we were one of the favourites apparently. And we had to beat Holland in the last game by two goals to qualify out of the tournament, out of the group stages.

1:00:25And it was 1-1 with about 20 minutes to go and actually again we went on a run and walked through about three or four Dutch defenders, slept the ball past Youngblood, I believe it was, in goal. And all of a sudden, there was hope. And every single World Cup that comes around, regardless of whether we're in it or not, that goal is played. Now, McTominay might overtake that. Yes. But if you were going to do another one, that would be Archie Gemmel, 1978. But you didn't qualify? No. Holland took a kickoff and scored about 30 seconds there to make it 2-2 to the dream ending. It's also very hard to put a long run in a bill.

1:01:14Which US moment would make it on the back of a bill? One of your saves in the gold cone? No, no. Go, go, go. USA. Landon Donovan. Probably. That's a good moment. You would say probably something 2002, maybe one of the goals against Mexico in the knockout to get us into the quarterfinal. Brian scored, didn't he? I think so, yeah. Frank, which moment for you? Simply, you know, Zidane first header in the 98 World Cup. And you know why? Because I'm just behind, so I will be with him.

1:01:57Blanc getting red carded so Frank got to play in the final. Yeah, yeah. Suspension of Blanc. Exactly. Ali, which part of Venezuela history would make it? Winning all the quarterfinals in Copa America 2011. Beating Chile 2-1. That would have been it. Would you have a worse body moment? I would have been in the picture as I was warming up behind the goal. But I was looking good in the warm-up. I did come on and close that game down the last 10-15 minutes. I mean, just solid, very solid with my touches. Just fouls. I drew a couple fouls. Very athletic. Fell over a couple times. Final question, quite random.

1:02:39What's your favorite French dish, Frank?

1:02:44The beauf bourguignon. Oh, yeah. And you know what? When I come over to Connecticut, in West Hartford, There is a place, a restaurant, a French restaurant. And I had last time a very good beurre bourguignon with Steve McManaman. He really enjoyed it. He had a lot of French fries, a lot of beers as well, but he enjoyed the beurre bourguignon. And really, that's a stew. In English, you say a stew, a French stew, and that's absolutely exquisite. So try that, guys. Beautiful. That's it. That brings us to the end of today's show. So we brought Frank just for this? Just for this, Frank. It's quite hot.

1:03:24You've got a heat wave at the moment. I imagine you're in shorts doing this. Do you want to show us your legs? Yeah, I'm in shorts. You know, I'm ready to go to bed. Wait a minute. That's me. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah. Well, you don't want to see too much. I want to see too much. Yeah, yeah, stay calm.
