In short

The episode is about the United States’ World Cup exit in the round of 16, losing 4-1 to Belgium (“USA Battered by Belgium”), plus broader tournament fallout. Guests and backgrounds: Kay Murray, Alejandro Moreno, and Stevie Nichol are ESPN FC analysts; Jermaine Jones is a former US international who comments on tactics and leadership; Ilkay Gündogan is a former Manchester City player and Germany/England-era star who discusses Haaland and later World Cup matchups.

Key claims

the US stopped pressing and were never the aggressor; Belgium “snuffed out” US positives with a perfect plan and better players across the field. Jermaine says the “Balogun/Trump” outside-noise story created a “monster” that Belgium punished in the 90 minutes, though US players insist it didn’t affect them.

Notable examples

Malik Tillman’s equalizer from a deflected free kick; Belgium’s late Lukaku goal and celebration; US player ratings criticizing Matt Turner’s mistake and Christian Pulisic’s non-involvement before injury. The show also pivots to Spain beating Portugal, Ronaldo’s World Cup ending, and Argentina vs Egypt preview.

Coming up, it's over and out for the United States. Flummoxed by the Flemish in the round of 16. We'll break it all down as many a USA fan will have gone sleepless in Seattle last night. And the World Cup said a final goodbye to Cristiano Ronaldo.

0:50While his main rival is back in action today, Lionel Messi and Argentina continuing their title defence. ESPN FC is next.

1:05Oh, the dream is over. The US were hoping to make it to their first quarterfinal since 2002, but they were no match for Belgium in the end. Welcome into our ESPN FC studios. Kay Marie Alejandro Moreno and Stevie Nichol here with you to look back on what we witnessed last night as we take a look at the reaction in the media. America's Cup dreams hit reality. Not their night, down and out. Uncle Scram, US giving the boot by Belgium in an ugly end to the Kop 4-1. It would finish and Jermaine Jones is with us. Jermaine Jones had a lot to say on last night's Football, Americas and FC, but we also saw him on social media.

1:44Jermaine, we're just going to read back the tweet that we saw from you this morning. Stop telling me the US made progress. That's what happens when you create a monster in Belgium that's punishing you for everything that was said and done before the game. Over to you, Jermaine.

2:02Yeah, you know, the whole tournament, I think it was, you know, building. And I said that more than once. I said we have to be careful that I don't see so many, you know, changes. I think, yeah, we have a good quality group, but not a lot of changes happened over the last couple of years. We talk about developing. but you know I think with the tournament growing and winning the first game, winning the second game I think we started believing in something and the whole country believed in something and we started getting a little bit I would say out of comfort zone and started talking that we, the best generation that we can make it possible, that we can win the World Cup and then especially now against Belgium when you watch the game but even if you go back and you look at the Turkey game we lost already too against an Europe team, then yes, you win against Bosnia.

2:54But when you look at the last game last night against Belgium, we had zero chance. We were, you know, with the whole Bollingen story before, with the president, the Red Card, and all the stories around that. We created a monster, and I said it yesterday, that monster destroyed us yesterday completely in that 90 minutes. At what point could you tell it was going to go this way for the US LA? The first minute? I think what was evident to see, if you compare it to the first couple of games that the United States played in this World Cup against Paraguay and Australia, what was noticeable then is how much the United States were willing to go and press the ball.

3:34And they were the aggressor over the course of the 90 minutes. And certainly early on in those matches, they were very much the aggressor. They were impacting and forcing turnovers from teams like Paraguay and Australia. and what we saw against Belgium is that the United States were never the aggressor. Belgium were the ones that were forcing the turnovers. Belgium were the ones that were creating the chances. Belgium were the ones that were on the attacking half. So from the very first minute, you said, uh-oh, this is different. This is problematic. How do you go about changing this momentum?

4:06And they never did. The quality of Belgium took over and the United States were searching for answers and they could not find any answers whatsoever. When Malik Tillman leveled it with the deflected free kick, did you think that maybe they could get something up then? Well, I thought after the equaliser we were going to see what we expected or what we thought was going to happen. I think Jermaine may have been talking about me because I got sucked in big time. We were here about three or four days ago and I was trying to tell Jermaine that this Belgium side has done nothing other than an incredible comeback against Senegal.

4:43The US are flying. They're squeezing their life out of teams. And I didn't listen to them. And so, yeah, right from the get-go. When the game against Paraguay started, I think we all went, whoa, I like this. And it continued through the Australia game. And actually, with the reserve team against Tokyo, it continued there as well. Yes, they lost the game, But that whole squeezing and pressing, it didn't happen. And yes, to answer your question, when they go in, I thought, OK, now we're going to see what we've been seeing. But underestimated Belgium big time and they didn't panic and they controlled the game again and in the end, comfortable in us.

5:28Well, while we're estimating things, we asked you to put together your player ratings, LA, for the US. Talk us through them. Yeah, well, I think for Matt Fries it's self-explanatory. While he made a great save to begin the match, then after that it was a free fall and the mistake he makes for the third goal was back breaking for the United States. So he gets that sort of great. As for Tim Ream, he gets a two as well because he got dunked on for the second goal and then he could have helped the mistake from Matt Fries but wasn't able to get a touch on the ball. and when you're the captain of a team that is asking for leadership and lacks composure in terms of what the team looked like early on in the game, then that reflects poorly on you individually.

6:13I can go through all the scores, and I'll just say Serginio Dez was poor so much so that he was being taken off the field at halftime, but I'll focus on Christian Pulisic. There's a part of me that wanted to give a one, but I said, you know, he showed up, so I'll give him a two. And it's not because I want to hone in on Christian Pulisic specifically, but what Christian Pulisic represents for this national team as compared to other national teams in this competition. He's not at the level of Messi, O 'Hallan, or Mbappe, but to the United States, he is that. He is that figure. And when this team was struggling early on in this match, prior to his injury, early on in this match, instead of looking to get on the ball and trying to problem-solve for this team, hey, let's get us into the attacking half.

7:02Let's relieve some pressure. Let's make sure that I get involved. He threw himself out into the left-hand side, parked himself over there, and did not participate in the game whatsoever. And that, to me, is unacceptable. Because if you're going to be the guy with the commercials and you're going to be the flag bearer and you're going to be all these things that he represents for the United States, then you have to get in the ball, on the ball, when the team is struggling. And he did not. And to see him walk off the field injured, It was such an underwhelming sight. And it was so deflating. And it is deflating for the guys on the field.

7:37If your best player is not showing up on the day, even prior to his injury, what does that do for the rest of the group? If he's not ready to go, if he's not playing at a high level, it permeates through the team. And that's part of being a leader. And I'm not saying yell and scream to be a leader, but perform at a high level and bring everybody with you. Christian Pulisic did not do that. Jermaine, your thoughts on Pulisic?

8:05For me, it's a completely different way that I look at it. I played with him and I said it. For me, my experience is that in the US, you don't become a star, the greatest star, and that's the difference to Europe. You get your time and you get built into becoming a star. In the US, I was there when Nike started to tell nobody plays with the 10 anymore. That's Christian Pulisic's number now. You know, when US soccer was pushing for him, you know that he's on every commercial. That you see it even now through the whole World Cup. So we're pushing the boy or the young man into something, you know.

8:41And yes, we can talk about he has the quality. He plays in big clubs overseas. But still, you know, we have to look at not only him. There's other guys around him too who on big stage don't perform. So that's how clear it is. and yesterday you were able to see it and through the tournament, yes, we talked about it and you guys all talked about it in the studio that when you look at the first game, the second game, yes, we, you know, we play that games, we play good. But even Paraguay game, I said, we can be happy that we played them in the first game and not maybe into the tournament, like two or three games in because then you will have a complete different game, you know.

9:19So for me, just to put it on Christian Pulisic, it's too easy for me, you know. I said that we have to look because for me is it when I look at the developing from the last tournaments to now I don't see big jumps so in always to say it's Christian Pulisic like failed or Christian Pulisic's mistakes and it's his fault and all that stuff it's for me too easy to push it just that one person so it's yesterday again there was 11 people on the field and when I look at it there was one with two men who actually bring to his performance so in all everybody else on the field failed that game and that's why we lost 4-1.

9:57So the road ends here for the US in the 2026 World Cup so let's get the word of the US players speaking after their loss to Belgium. It feels exactly the same when you get knocked out of a tournament. It's hard to say. It doesn't feel great. You start to think about what you could have done better. It was unlike any of the performances we've had this summer to be honest. I mean I don't know, it's hard to say where it went wrong, but that just didn't feel like us out there today. We didn't win any individual duels really. We looked like we lacked energy. It looked like we weren't as fluid as we have been.

10:34So yeah, just disappointed. I think overall there were positives that we're going to take away from it. It just doesn't feel like it right now. We played well in the other games. It was very intense. We was able to generate energy with the crowd. And today we didn't give the crowd a lot to cheer for. So that's the most disappointing thing. And that's the part that hurts the most. I don't think it was the opponent, the speed of the game, the moment. I don't think any of that. I think it's just small details of the game that got away from us. And when they get away from you like that, then obviously you're going to lose the game.

11:03There's been a lot of noise about Ballow's suspension, the president getting involved. I'm wondering if or how much you guys heard that the last 36 hours and whether that had any kind of an impact on you guys. No, it had no impact. outside noise we've we've done a good job with this group of of allowing outside noise to be outside noise you know it's it's got nothing to do with us as as players and and getting ready for games you know it's one of those things that's the world we live in so you know we we were fully focused on on us as a as a group and as a team and and fully focused on the game and not really worrying about what was being said or debated in the outside world.

11:46I don't think that noise or anything affected us by any means. If anything, it probably uplifted us in a sense. That noise was following Balogun being available, and whether it played a part or not, the US players insist in it didn't. But as for Belgium, it definitely seems as though it was a motivator. This is their Twitter account after the game. Overturn this, they say, following on from Lukaku's goal. and in the papers as well. They say, hello, Donald. Hello, Donald. So, yes, I think that they definitely used it to fire them up. After Lukaku's goal, the fourth goal on the night in the 93rd minute, the Belgian players all joined him in his celebration and then they also hit the trump dance on the pitch and in the dressing room as well.

12:35Okay. So I think it's fair to say here, Stevie, that they did use this as a motivator. I think you might be catching on to something. Listen, I think absolutely that was a factor. But you have to look at it in terms of football and in terms of the way they went about it, in terms of the tactics. Yes, the motivation was there, but they completely dominated and outplayed the US side. All the things that the US have done well, and I'm thinking of the likes of Robinson on the left, you know, Dest on the right, talking about how McKinney gets forward, Christian Pulisic's been doing this, Baligan's...

13:15The way that they were set up, Rudy Garcia set his team up just perfectly and completely minimised all the positive things that as a unit and as individuals the US had, they completely doused them and destroyed them. And then after that, the US couldn't keep the ball because they were getting put under pressure. And then when the Belgians got it, they looked so much more comfortable on the ball. Certainly more comfortable than they've been in this whole tournament. I mean, this was a different side. And I think you've got to look at the team he picked. You know, you think of other teams. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

13:52No Doku, no De Bruyne, no Lukaku. This team was picked to play this game. This team was picked to, number one, snuff out all the noise from the crowd, all the noise from the players on the US side, and then we'll try and play our game. And absolutely what they perfect. So he had a plan and then he had the fuel of this Balogun situation too. Yeah, so I think, and Steve and Jermaine know this very well, the locker room is a very fickle place. It is. And it doesn't take much for the locker room to fall apart, but it doesn't take much for the locker room to come together. And you give them a little something, something that everybody can hang on to, and you rally around something, and now you have everybody's attention.

14:34And so Rudy Garcia didn't have to do anything to get the attention of Belgium. That was done for him. And you saw and you noticed in the manner in which Belgium played, that had a different level of energy and intensity. Now, that may just be the fact that you're in a knockout competition, but it may also be the fact that all of this was going on. They certainly elevated their level of play. There is no doubt about that. But at the very basic core conversation of this, The best explanation may just be the simplest one. Belgium have better players than the United States all over the field. Belgium are better than the United States all over the field.

15:13So it should not be a surprise that this was the outcome. Back in March, it was 5-2. And we dismissed it kind of, sort of, because, well, you know, it was a friendly. It was a friendly. Maybe we should have paid attention to that match a whole lot more than we did because the teams haven't changed all that much. and the United States against Belgium yesterday, they did not look competitive. They were underwhelming. And Belgium, in key moments, when you need your key stars to make plays, Leandro Trozar looked like a world-class player, looked like a guy that was about to make a difference. Belgium looked like they were always going to create opportunities and score goals, particularly in the first half, whenever they got into the attacking half.

15:53The United States never created that sort of momentum. Yeah, and so we saw the result that we did. Now, we've heard Belgium saying and pretty much showing that it was used as a motivator for them. We've heard Ali saying that Belgium were the better team and that was clear on the night as well. But Jermaine, many of the players are insisting that it didn't play a factor, this whole Balogun situation. Do you think for the US players it did actually add some extra pressure?

16:23Let's put myself, if I put myself in their shoes, right, like as a player. I don't think really that you try to focus on it. But Ali had a good point. I just look at it from both sides. When I'm the U.S. team and I go and I look at the stats, since I think 1930 was the last time that the U.S. won against Belgium. So you look at the other side of Belgium and you look and you say, oh, the whole country, everybody talks about it, that we the favorite, that we have to go in there, we have to beat them. It's not even the Donald Trump's conversation and what happened there. I think it's just in general, like as a player to a player, you look and you go, wait a minute, they have players, they're pretty good.

17:06It's not that easy. And then you go out on the field and the Belgian players show you that the quality is there on their side, that they are, when you try to press them, when you try to get on their skin and everything, that they have the quality to play out of it, out of the pressure, and they switch the game to, you know, on your side, that you have to handle something you not had in this tournament, that, you know, you go down a goal, you have to come back, you have to figure this out how you get back to this game, you know, and you're not getting really into the game, and it's tough for you, and I think that's all the situations what happened in this game yesterday, that they were challenged, the US team, with the situation they're not faced in this tournament, and when they faced it, most of the time they lost the games, So they lost against Turkey.

17:53They lost against Belgium in March. So now they lost again. And we're not talking here about a game they lose 1-0 or 2-1. It was a clear statement of Belgium that we are a better team. We are better players. And even letting out our three guys here with De Bruyne, he didn't even play at all. Lukaku came in late and scored even his goal. and then if you look at it, you know, Doku came in too. And that's, I would say, that's incredible for Belgium that if they look at it and they go, we let three of our guys out, two of them, they're a little bit older, they're just, one of them need a little, you know, maybe 20 minutes and Doku will bring in 30 minutes and we see where it goes to.

18:37But the guys who will start, I trust them. I trust them as a coach. I look at them and say, they're better than a US team and they will beat them and they will prove it and they will show it. So, Belgium did it. And I think at the end, as a football fan, you look at it now and you say the result says everything, right? And then the dancing, that's all just, you know, the, how you say, the whipped cream on the cake, you know, what the Belgium did then with the dancing and everything. Definitely in Belgium, it would be whipped cream on a cake, you're feeling, not just icing, but yes. Okay. The cherry on top.

19:09The cherry on top. But I like it. It's Belgium. They have nice treats, you know. Whipped cream, cherry, all right. Whipped cream. We'll take the whipped cream. I like that one. Ali, what happens next to Pochettino? Well, that's a good question. Because here's the thing. The United States have been beating teams like Paraguay and Australia in the World Cup for years upon years. It's not new for the United States to have success against those sort of teams. And Mariusz Pochettino is brought to the United States men's national team to win this sort of match. The match against Belgium. The match against Belgium.

19:42That's how much further forward are we now than what we were back in 2022? If you're talking about the United States men's national team, are we that much further forward? Or is it just because there's been such a good feeling about this team because of the start that they had in this World Cup, because they won the group that you kind of go, man, look at them. Now, after you see the performance against Belgium, you go, man, look at that. Yeah. And again, I'll ask that question as it pertains to Mariso Pochettino. He was brought in to make this program better than what it was in 2022. And it's a fair question to ask, given the performance against Belgium, are they better now than what they were in 2022?

20:26And if they are, it's slightly better. Why would Pochettino want to stay? I don't know. If Pochettino came to the U.S. because of the World Cup, he's not going to stay with the U.S. because he wants to be involved in the Gold Cup, where he's going to have half a team and not all these players. He did say he wanted to change the culture. The culture was a big thing. But he's got to say all the right things when he's in the job. He's got to sell it while he's in the job. I mean, I just don't see how Mauricio Pochettino would want to stay on, because there's nothing in particular much going to happen between now and when.

21:05When's the next big tournament? I mean, for the US, other than the Gold Cup. Why is he staying for the Gold Cup? It's not happening. So I don't see Pochettino staying. He's saying it's up to them and we'll see what they say. But there's no way. He came for the World Cup and the World Cup only. He's not coming to the US to try and change the culture of the US soccer. He's not trying to make players better for US soccer. He came for the World Cup and that's all he's going to do. As soon as that contract is done, he'll be gone. Okay, but I'll ask you. You're looking at it from the perspective of Pochettino.

21:40Let's look at it from the perspective of the United States. Should the United States want Pochettino to stay? Well, they should realise that he won't want to stay and the answer would be no. Let me ask that question, Ale's question to Jermaine. Should the United States want Pochettino to stay?

21:58Yeah, from the US side, of course you want him to stay. He's a big personality, he's a good coach, he knows what he's doing, right? But I think if you, like you guys talked in the studio, if you turn it around, the main guy who brought him here, he left to Saudi Arabia before the tournament. And he was in charge now for the tournament and I agree that I believe that he saw that as an opportunity too, because you already heard before the tournament that he was flirting with some big clubs in Europe and using that, it's not only using that for the countryside, like for the US, it's even for himself.

22:33It's a huge stage. You can present something that you took a team from nobody had believed in something into a good group stage. You know, it's for himself. I think a good stamp too, that he can look at it. And I agree that I believe that, and I said that yesterday, that I don't think he will stay. I think he will, when his contract is finished, he will say, I'm done. Because I think he wants to be on a big stage and he wants to coach every day. And that's why I believe that he will not re-sign the new contract. Great stuff. Thanks so much for being with us, Jermaine. And covering this game for us, we did have our very own team on the ground right here in the United States, Alex Kirkland and Mario Suarez. We're still trying to find out if Alex can hear us. That's why Mario just gave him a little nudge. But we know that Mario can definitely hear us. So Mario, give us your reaction first of all to this game and Spain's win.

25:54Well, I'm happy, like Ale. I think the performance of Spain is improving every match, every day. maybe they are not playing as well as we were thinking they were going to play but it's a very solid team it's very difficult to create chances against them they are defending amazing and then they are competing like a amazing team the substitution yesterday from Luis de la Fuente changed the match Ferran, Mikel, Merino and Fabian all three participate in the goal so what else can ask for a team you know that a World Cup a tournament is impossible to win only with 11 players. They feel like a family, they feel like a team and they are demonstrating every match.

26:37They are improving as that is why we are very optimistic in Spain, because now we will face Belgium. We're supposed to be favourites and then we will see. But yesterday I think good Spain, poor Portugal and well, we are happy in Spain. Okay, of course. Yeah, we're going to try and get the issue with Alex's audio fix right now. While we do that, let's talk about Cristiano Ronaldo. Was it a tournament too far for the 41-year-old L.A.? 100 % yes, yes, yes, yes. Look, I know Stevie likes to read quite a bit, right, Stevie? Oh, yes. Yeah, you're a reader, avid reader. Avid. Gabriel Garcia Marquez has a book called Chronicle of a Death Foretold.

27:22This was foretold. this outcome for Portugal where Roberto Martinez essentially picked Ronaldo as his ride or die well they're dead now dead now and he made a choice he made a choice to ride with Cristiano Ronaldo even though it was clear to see that this player could not give you what was necessary in order for you to advance in the latter stages of this competition it's not something I'm saying right now is something that I said ahead of the tournament. I said it again after the DR Congo match. He is limited because of his lack of movement. And Roberto Martinez then decided, you know what, that's the guy that I'm going to go with.

28:04Gonzalo Ramos, who had just scored a game-winning goal for you as a center forward against Croatia, didn't even get a minute in a match in which you needed to win in order to advance. And so Roberto Martinez makes this decision that you're going to go with Ronaldo till the end of times. Well, the end of times are right now. The end of times are right now for Cristiano Ronaldo. And soon there will be the end of times for Roberto Martinez because it's yet another failure for him. He was a disaster with Belgium in the 2022 World Cup. Somehow gets a Portugal job. And once again, he has made decisions that have affected this team in a negative way.

28:42He leaned on Cristiano Ronaldo rather than leaning on the talent around Cristiano Ronaldo. Out. Gone. Alex is back with us right now. Roberto Martinez was asked about this whole situation after the game. Alex, what did he say? Yeah, there were two main topics of his press conference. One was his own future. He said, yes, I'm going. It makes sense. It's the right time. The other one was about Cristiano Ronaldo. And he said, look, when you're chasing a goal, that is not the time to take off Cristiano Ronaldo. He said, maybe with the game heading to extra time, if it had gone to extra time, OK, then he would have done it.

29:15He said he would have taken off Cristiano, put on Gonzalo Ramos. but within the 90 minutes he wasn't going to do it. In terms of his own future as coach, like I say, he's going. It's difficult, you know, because I really like him and every time I hear him talk about football, I love what he has to say and he's convincing but it's hard to escape the fact that this is an incredibly talented group of Portugal players. This is a country that can't assume they'll always have that much talent because, as he said in his press yesterday, they've got a population of 10 million people. They shouldn't have a squad this talented and they cannot waste it And yet they've done that again at a major tournament.

29:50Mario, where do you stand on the Cristiano Ronaldo factor?

29:57Well, what you are saying, he's an absolute legend. I think we are not going to see nothing similar to what he has achieved and what Messi did this rivalry for a lot of years. But now I think it's the time for other players. In Portugal, you have Gonzalo Ramos or another. You have to build a team, I think, around Vitinha, Neves, Bruno Fernandes, these kind of players. And I think it's the time for those players to stand up and do another thing, because Cristiano has one clear goal, that is to achieve the 1 ,000 goals, and that's it. So, when you say all that, obviously there's no denying everything he's done for the game and the legend that he is in the game, but what about yesterday and him playing the whole 90 minutes, Mario?

30:41Well, for Spain it was good that he played in 90 minutes, to be honest. Perfect. Because it's true that in the box, in the goal, he's the most dangerous player, but Portugal wasn't able to arrive to the box to create clear chances so that Cristiano can create danger or shoot on target. He shot on target, I think, just two times in the first half, but not very difficult for Unai Simón. So I was expecting that Gonzalo Ramos was going to come in, but Roberto Martinez at the end is the one who decide. But as I said, for Spain, I think it was good that he was playing because I think Laporte, Cubarcia and Rodri has really controlled it all the time.

31:21Well, we did hear from Cristiano Ronaldo after the game. Here's what he had to say.

31:28He has given me the best. He has won three titles for Portugal. Before Cristiano, Portugal had no title. I am happy. The biggest title I won in the selección was in 2016. For me, it has the same dimension as the world. That's why I am out of my best.

31:55And nearly at the top of the list, the one thing you never do is put a player in a situation where he's not going to succeed. That's the worst thing you can do to a player. Put him in a spot where you know the likelihood is pretty high he's not going to succeed. And that's exactly what Roberto Martinez has done with Ronaldo. This World Cup should have been about Ronaldo finishing his international career for Portugal. It should have been positive. Instead, because Roberto Martinez wants to pander to Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese public, he starts him and he keeps him on. And so it's been negative, negative, negative.

32:37that's all we've been talking about with Cristiano Ronaldo for this World Cup it should have been the opposite he shouldn't have started he should have been coming on with 30 minutes to go for example where he's fresh and he's going to at least have some sort of legs over defenders and then give them an opportunity then you might get something from him but you cannot set your players up to fail and that's exactly what Roberto Martinez has done and worst of all Ronaldo's gone out with that sort of interview where the guy's asking, you know, did you do enough? I mean, that's just the wrong way. That's the wrong way that he should be finishing.

33:14Well, according to Cristiano, Cristiano did do enough because the question is about himself and yet he makes it into the third person, which that in itself is just ridiculous. But Roberto Martinez treated this as a lifetime achievement award for Cristiano Ronaldo, this World Cup. And his first responsibility has to be to the team, to Portugal, to the country, making decisions that are best for the team. You just referenced the fact that he did not put Cristiano Ronaldo in a position to succeed. I would also say that he did not put the team in a place that they could succeed. And you saw it in their performances, and now they are gone.

33:53Yes. We've got to let the boys go because they've got a flight to catch. They will continue to follow Spain and be here throughout on ESPN FC. Safe travels, guys. Safe travels.

34:09Spain threw 1-0 against Portugal. Full recap of that game over on YouTube with Dan and the boys. Check that out. That's streaming right now. You can go back and get all their takes on what happened in this game. Argentina back in action today, and they're in Atlanta. So you know what that means, don't you? Kevin Egan's Irish exit coming up next.

34:40Argentina take on Egypt today in the last 16 in Atlanta. Remember, Argentina had that big battle with Cape Verde to get here. Egypt, for their part, beat Australia in the last round. And now we get to see Messi against Salah. And given the fact that this game is in the Atlanta stadium, we had to check back in with our boy Kevin Egan. Kev, what's the crack? What is the crack? The crack is unbelievable right now. That's an Irish word for fun, by the way, because the atmosphere is well and truly building. We're steps from Atlantis Stadium. It's Mosul Ali and Messi. We've got Egypt fans in attendance here right now, raring to go.

35:19We've also got lots of Argentines as momentum is building for the champions. One of them I want to introduce you to, this is Carlos. Carlos, your shirt is absolutely phenomenal. Who have we got here? Well, we have Messi, Mardona, Kempes from 78, so hopefully we can add more faces here. All right, this fella's quite humble. I got it out of him. He's an absolute legend. Guinness Book of Records from the last World Cup. What's the deal? Well, it was for a couple of days. I went to 40 games in 10 days. 40 games? Yeah, yeah. I went to every game I could, so very excited. This is around my 50th game, World Cup game, so very excited about it.

35:54Absolutely. Well, welcome to Atlanta. Delighted you're with us. And I need one of those shirts, by the way. Well, you need to give me some tea. Yeah. No, we don't go to me for fashion. Kay Murray knows that much. Egypt fans here. How are you excited? What's the excitement level like? This historic day. This is insane. This is the farthest we've ever been. So we are, this is for our country. This is like on a different, we already feel like we won, to be honest. This is Mosul's moment here today. This is a win for us. Yes. It is definitely Mosul's moment. I think it is the entire Egyptian team's moment.

36:25It's the entire country's moment. So my uncle my dad can tell you they've never won in their life even if we lose we won being here We don't care if we lose that's the Irish mentality. Yeah, we are here. That's it. We made it Go Egypt is right. Let me tell you we don't have an English breakfast here on the menu Okay, but we do have our main man Pierce has a Stevie breakfast. We've got a Coke and Tato. Stevie ready to go. Coke and Tato ready for Stevie. I want to get Stevie Nichol sitting at the bar here at the Irish exit one day, Kate. The boys are a bit worried about that. LA thinks that could be costly.

37:03When's the next flight? When's the next flight? I'm on. I'm going. You know Atlanta. You know so well. It's a soccer city. What will it mean to have Lionel Messi and Mo Salah there? Phenomenal. I mean, Messi's been here with Inter Miami against Atlanta United at this very stadium. He knows that stadium very well. He was a victim of the greatest upset in MLS history when he got sent packing by Atlanta United. But this is different. This is so different. And Messi and Argentina know that they could be back here again in the World Cup semifinal. If they can get by Egypt today, they may very well face Colombia.

37:36And then it could be your England, Kay, in downtown Atlanta. And the English brought something that we had never seen here in Atlanta before. But I think the Argentines and the Egyptians want to eclipse that. Who's excited for the game today?

37:51Let's be having you, Kaiser. Lovely, lovely stuff, Kev. Honestly, it's been brilliant to be checking in with you guys at the Irish Exit and to be including Stevie with the most perfect breakfast there. What did you think of that, Stevie? I'm very humbled, very humbled. A proper breakfast, if you ask me. Brilliant stuff. OK, thank you so much for being with us, Kevin. We'll let you go and enjoy the party. I thought that was his laugh. Make sure if you are in Atlanta that you get yourself to the Irish exit and make sure that if you watch that game, you tune in to YouTube after it. ESPN FC will bring you all the instant reaction.

38:28We'll be hearing from Ilkay Gundogan after the break. Lots to discuss with him, including what it was like to play with Erling Haaland. That's on the way next. Next.

38:44Help people affected by the Venezuela earthquakes. Your donation through redcross.org slash ESPN enables the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to, and help people recover from this disaster. Vamos, Venezuela! So, here's how things are looking after the round of 16 games that have been decided so far. Our quarterfinals bringing us France against Morocco, Spain against Belgium and Norway taking on England. We'll find out who will be joining them after today's games. Ilkay Gundogan is joining us right now and we will be hearing from Ilkay in just a moment. But first of all, we want to remind you of something that happened in the Spain-Portugal game when Rodri was laughing and celebrating Bernardo Silva's miss in the closing stages of this game.

39:31It was a big chance to rescue Portugal and equalise it. His header went over and Rodri went over to laugh at him. Now, Silva confronted him. He was very upset at the lack of sportsmanship. And Rodri, after the game, said, I apologise to Bernardo Silva for celebrating his miss in the last play. It was my fault. So he took accountability for what happened. Don't apologise, Rodri. Don't apologise. Celebrate, baby. Celebrate. Ilkay Gundogan knows well both of these players. What did you make of the incident, Ilkay? It was quite funny to see them fighting, to be honest, because they're both good friends of mine.

40:11I know both of their characters, and they are both extremely nice and funny guys. And actually, they like each other also a lot. So we have went for several dinners together, you know, and had a glass of wine. So I think there will have some discussions in the next few days. Yeah, obviously, just the adrenaline sometimes getting the better of you in the heat of the moment. and what we did see was Rodri apologising afterwards. I want to talk to you about the Norway-Brazil game, Milka, because I know you watched that closely. Before we get into some of it there, what did you make of it? Well, it was surprising, to say the least.

40:46I think Brazil has been so far quite well. I think they have amazing players and they were their favourites, even though Norway seems really on top of their games. they have a really talented team they have amazing players individually and I think they were aware that they can get maybe quite far if they perform as a team and that's exactly what they are doing they play really good football they use their abilities and strengths in the most amazing way and Erling is scoring the goals for them Erling Haaland and you coinciding at Man City during a historic season in the 2022-23 season. Tell us more about what it was like to play with him.

41:34It was amazing. I think he was the missing piece for us, you know, for us. Already a really good team. But then to go and win the treble, you know, go for the Champions League, especially, I think he was the missing piece because, you know, having an attacker like him, combining his physical strengths with his pace, with his finishing and technical abilities as well, I think was for us a great solution up front. And obviously he has just been improving since then. And yeah, he's maybe the best striker in the world right now. So I think every team would be really happy to have him because he's just so difficult to defend.

42:17Is he really that cool and calm off the pitch in the dressing room as he appears to be? Is he really the way it seems to us all watching on? he is if he doesn't spend most of his time on the treatment bed then he is really cool and cool and calm people who are in the dressing room they don't get to see him much because he spends a lot of time in the physio room um he likes to have some treatment but he's a very nice guy he's very very humble um he's very normal to be honest with you he um is quiet and he likes to have a joke, a banter, you know, like they say in England. So it's really great to have him on the team.

42:58Good stuff. I love the striker here laughing at Erling Haaland and enjoying his time on the treatment bench. Because you always have one of those guys that enjoys being in the treatment room. But so long as that guy produces on the field, then you can stay there all you want, buddy. You don't have to come and talk to us. Just go score goals when we need you to score goals. Yeah, it's definitely the case I can imagine. Ilkay, so we're getting to the later stages now of the World Cup. Which team has really stood out to you so far and why? You know, I like a little underdog story. And I think Morocco has been brilliant so far from what I've seen, you know.

43:32And from the start, when I saw them playing against Brazil, I think it was, you know, the first half where they've played amazing football. And then now, you know, going up against France, I think that will be a really interesting game to see and to watch. and for me it's a team that I really enjoy watching right now and then obviously you have the talent in France that I just spoke about and you have still Argentina on the other side and Spain who always play great football so it has been a great tournament so far and I'm really excited about the France-Morocco game right now I'll tell you what, there are going to be eight teams left in this competition Ilkai mentioned about half of them Okay, well, I'm hoping now that Ilkay can mention this fixture behind me.

44:20Harry Kane against Erling Haaland, Norway against my England. How do you see that one going, Ilkay?

44:29It's tough to predict, honestly. I am also a little bit rooting for your England team, I have to say, because I know Thomas Tuchel quite well. And I actually met him when he was at the airport flying out to England to sign his contract with the English FA. So as the coincidence wanted, I met him at the airport and we had a little discussion, you know, and a little conversation. But I spent one year with him at Dortmund. I've learned a lot. You know, I think he's a great manager. He's maybe a little bit underrated in Germany, if I'm being honest, or not as good seen as maybe in Europe in general.

45:10but I think he has been phenomenal with Paris when he was there, you know, with a team full of superstars. I think he has done a good job so far with England, you know, and he knows what it takes to win. He has proven that. And he took some decisions before the tournament that were not maybe that popular, you know, selecting the squad. But if you're successful, then you have all the rights, you know. So it's going to be really interesting. Obviously, for me personally, England are the favourites. but Norway has shown that they're up for the challenge. So it's going to be a really nice game. What's it like playing for him then, Ilkay?

45:47What's he like as a man-manager on the day-to-day, on the training pitch? How is he? He's really demanding, which I really enjoy as a player, to be honest. I want someone that makes me feel a bit uncomfortable, you know, that is challenging me, that pushes me to my limits also a little bit. But then on the other side, I think he has really good ideas, you know, about the way he wants his team play. I think he's really good in assessing what the main strengths of his teams are, you know, and trying to use them as good as possible. And he's very smart. He's a very intelligent man, which always helps, obviously, in every job.

46:24So I think he has a good share, you know, of the England success so far. And again, I'm really excited to see where England can end up in that tournament. Great to have you with us, Ilkay. You can come back anytime here on ESPN FC. Let me have it. Let me have it. Ilkay, thank you so much for joining us. We'll hear from you again very soon. Make sure to join the team on ESPN FC tonight at 6 p.m. Eastern right here on ESPN2 looking back on the Columbia-Switzerland game. And our predictions will be on the way for you. Stick around with us. Prediction time next.

47:08Make sure to check out NWSL Action Seattle against Portland coming up on Sunday 4 p.m. Eastern ESPN and ESPN Deportes have you covered. It is prediction time here once again and it's Argentina against Egypt. It may come as no surprise to you that Argentina are big favorites in this game. But can Egypt cause an upset here? What do you say in LA? Well, I did not notice until now that I'm all Argentina all the time, dressed in the coast of Argentina. It's merely a coincidence, but it's not a coincidence that Argentina is going to win, although they need to show a whole lot better than they did against Cape Verde.

47:49That's a very smart move, Ali. I think I'll follow it as well. Egypt, extra time of penalties against Australia, kills the legs. Argentina wins comfortably. Okay, I'll go with you guys. Okay. Colombia are slight favourites here. Vamos Colombia, vamos Colombia no más. But Stevie, remember, you've been sticking up with Switzerland. Dan Thomas is watching this morning and I know he riled you up about Switzerland. I can't wait for Switzerland to win and then you're getting it. He's not watching. Sorry, I can't support you here, Stevie. I'm all in on Colombia for this game. I hope you're both wrong.

48:28OK, Ali's had a busy morning today. Yes, well. No offence to Colombia, by the way. It's OK. I'm not Colombian, so you don't need to apologize to me. Alex had a busy morning. He's been on the radio. He's been on SportsCenter. He's been giving marriage advice, I'm told. What's going on here? Well, Gary, the SportsCenter host, he's getting married, and this was his last show. I was asked to give him some advice, and because I'm no longer going to need those glasses, given that the United States collapsed last night, then I figured that I would give him a gift, and he can go and take these glasses to his honeymoon.

49:00I'm gonna guess his wife is not gonna be appreciating those glasses. What about the advice that I gave? I thought it was pretty sound. I said listen very carefully and watch your tone. Happy wife, happy life. Listen carefully and watch your tone. Congratulations to Gary and Abby. And thanks to Ali for the advice for a happy life. See you tomorrow.
