0:34Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the SPN FC. K-Morri Alejandro Moreno and Stevie Nichol here in the studio. Lots coming up on tonight's show but we'll be kicking things off in La Liga where Real Madrid were looking to stop the rot after two back-to-back defeats in La Liga. They came up against Celta Vigo and managed to beat them at the death. Too many struck first for Real Madrid however, Borja Iglesias would level things out before the half was through. but in the final minutes of the game, Fede Valverde had a shot that was deflected in and Real Madrid took all three points away from this clash.
1:08This is how things are looking in the table as it stands right now. Real Madrid have moved to within a point of Barcelona. However, Barcelona are yet to play athletic club this weekend. Mario Suarez was watching this game for us. They did it, Mario. They did it at the death and got those three points.
1:27Yes, it's amazing because of the individual talent. I think this is the worst Real Madrid, I don't know, in 15, 20 years, and they are fighting for the title. This talks about from the level of La Liga right now. It's amazing. Today, Real Madrid shots just three times on target. They score two goals because two of the best players this season, the most regular ones, Valverde and Chameny, are scoring. Benitez, well, he has the first target on the first half, but we didn't see nothing else from Benitez, from Brahim. Gonzalo came from the bench. They finished with three players coming from the academy.
2:10So, it's a lot of noise around Real Madrid, but they won today. That's their reality and they are still fighting for La Liga. There'll be a little less noise now after getting this win, won't there, Ale? A tiny little, un poquitito, tititísimo. Less noise as it pertains to Real Madrid and the continued pressure on this group. I hate to tell you that I told you so, but I told you so. This is how this team was going to win this game today. It was never going to be pretty. It was never going to be dominant. It was never going to be something that you felt like, look at Real Madrid. They're back. You just said that they put things right.
2:50They put things right-ish. Right-ish. Look, had Real Madrid lost today, it would not have been a surprise. Iago Aspas is inches away from that ball bouncing off the post and in. Instead, it bounces off the post and out. And then Real Madrid depends on a deflection for them to win the game. But they don't care in the big picture. Because you get the three points and you're still very much in the conversation with Barcelona, top of the table. A Barcelona team that has their own issues and their own concerns. But if you want to look indeed at Real Madrid and the performance itself, this was no better than whatever they did against Osasuna.
3:32It was not better than whatever they did against Getafe. This was not an improvement. There are still lingering questions about this group, how they go about creating opportunities. Why do they get so disconnected in the midfield? Why can they not control the possession of the ball and the pace of the game as much as they should. Trent Alexander-Arnold, well, it's not a secret he can't defend. Breaking news, he still can't defend. And so the concerns remain for Real Madrid. Now, the thing that makes it un poquititititissimo better today is the fact that they won the game. And that perhaps allows the team to take a breath and to enjoy the lack of noise up until they play Champions League against Manchester City.
4:15So I suppose the build-up to the game against Manchester City is going to be with a whole lot more of a positive vibe, if you will. But still, let's not get crazy. This team still has a lot of issues. Let's continue that talk on Trent Alexander-Arnold because we talked about seeing the best and the worst of the player in this game.
4:39Hold your breath. He can't defend. and he's well I think he was Liverpool from a kid 12 years maybe something like that and not one day of those 12 years has he been able to defend and so Real Madrid knew exactly what they were buying because you have to think they scouted him in Liverpool's first team and he couldn't defend for them either now that ball you see him putting through for Vinny is what Trent Alexander is all about on one half of the field but unfortunately this is the Trent Alexander on the other half of the field and as a player who doesn't know how to defend. It's just, it's really, there's no grey area.
5:17He doesn't understand the art of defending. But because of what he gives you going forward, then you somewhat will allow the mistakes. Unfortunately for Real Madrid, they find themselves in a position where they can't afford ending making mistakes defensively because they're not scoring enough goals going forward and defensively. They're not tight. So, yeah, Trent Alexander-Arnold is a guy who, on two halves of the field, is completely the opposite. He's brilliant on one, let's say, not very good. That's the kindest thing I can say about the other half. What would bother me, though, Stevie, well, I can accept that a player doesn't have defensive instincts, even though he's playing right back, but okay.
6:03Let's accept that he doesn't have those defensive instincts. Give me the effort, at least. He gets beaten in behind by Williot Svetlva, and there's not a point in that sprint in which he's actually going full speed. And so that's effort. That's not so much I don't know how to defend. He's just not willing to run. And that, I mean, as a player, as a former player, and if I were his teammate, I'm like, look, I can take the fact that you maybe don't know how to defend, but give me a full sprint and get yourself in a position where you can get in between the ball and the goal. And he never does that.
6:41Ali, I've had a lot of years to try and figure this out. OK. And I think I've figured it out. I don't honestly believe it's about the effort. It comes across, no question, the eye test comes across that the effort's lacking. But I think what he does is he starts thinking about what he's supposed to be doing. and then it all just falls apart. You know, I agree. Should he have gotten ahead of his attacker instantly when he stops and lets him go? Number one, that's what a proper defender would have done. But then from there, he's thinking, OK, I don't want to give a foul away. I'll let him get there just in case I can't get there.
7:23Then I'll get myself in a position to defend, which a normal defender would think. But then when you have no instinct of what position to be in, You end up too far off him and you don't affect the play. So I understand that when you look at it, the eye test says there's a lack of effort. I just think there's a lack of knowledge of how to defend when you're in that position. And then when he tries to think about it, he can't come up with an answer because he does know what to do. Do you have the answer, Mario? Is it hard to watch with the defensive eye when we see this side of Trent Alexander-Arnold's game?
8:02To be honest, I know all the quality that has with the ball, but in defending, it's hard to see this. And even, you know, it's not only about Trent, but when we are talking about Trent and you have Dani Carvajal on the bench, that is the captain, he's a legend in Spain. You think that he must be not really fit to not be playing right now because Trent Alexander, even that he's a good player, he's not performing in the right way to be a starter in Real Madrid. So most of the problems that he's having is in the defensive. And he's not having the right centre-back to be able to help him when he's not in the right position.
8:45So I think Trent needs to adapt to Real Madrid. But when we talk about a team and the team is not performing well, every player is performing worse than when he normally is. So Trent Anderson is struggling here in Madrid and he will need to improve to continue next season here for sure. I think Mario's spot on because Canati was the reason why Alexander Arnaud was successful at Liverpool. Canati covered for him. Every time he went forward and got caught out, Canati came across and covered him. So I'm 100 % with Mario. He needs a senator back who's going to do his job as well as his own. Absolutely.
9:29OK, Ale, let's talk about the penalty review in the second half and what you made of this one and whether they got the right decision. Well, I think they did. The first question we have to ask ourselves, is it a handball? Well, yes, it is, from Ferran Jougla. And you sort of wonder, what in the world are you doing? But the other thing that you have to ask when you watch the video, is there a push of Cesar Palacios on Elias Moriba? right in front of Eran Jurga. And it is a two-handed push. And so that's a foul. And Cesar Palazzo becomes active in the play because he's actually challenging for the initial header.
10:05So I have no problem with how the referee went about this and how VAR went about this. Hey, we saw a handball. Was there a handball? Yes. But let's see the full picture of the play. And is there a push ahead of the handball? I think there is. And so once you go, take a look at it and evaluate all the aspects of the play. They came to the correct decision. This is VAR working at a high level. There, I said it. Mario, do you agree with Ale? Say nothing different from Ale. Totally agree with you. No notes. No notes from Mario. Stevie, come on. Can we give him a full sweep? Ale Moreno, correct. 100%.
10:47Yep. Okay. So that's how things are standing for Real Madrid right now. However, next up for them is Manchester City. And that's going to be interesting as well to see how things go because that's who we know they've played early for because they've got this game coming up in the last 16. Mario, how do you see them up against this City side? It's not like City is setting the world alight this season either, but Real Madrid have definitely got their problems. Yeah, of course. If you ask me right now, as I told you before, For me, this Real Madrid is the worst in the last 15 years. But when they play in Champions League, Real Madrid is different.
11:24So if you ask me, my opinion is that Man City is favourite. For sure, that is a better team right now. But you never know with Real Madrid when they play in Europe. It's totally different. And I don't know when he's going to be able Mbappe to play. I don't know what players they are going to recover for the first leg. but I think Man City's favorite but you can never trust when you have in front Real Madrid but in my opinion for me Man City's favorite I don't know what you are going to say if you agree with me or not but I think so Can I just say as we know Mario former Atletico Madrid player and Rayo Vallecano player so a rival to Real Madrid and yet I sense in Mario's voice that he himself who has no affiliation with Real Madrid, he's frustrated with Real Madrid.
12:15He sees Real Madrid play and go, what team is this? Real Madrid over the years have created this history and this image of who they are and what they are as a team. And yes, this version of Real Madrid is far from what's expected and far from its best. At one point today, there was a substitution of number 45 for 37. And everybody in that stadium was like, who are these guys? Because they're not, are they in the list? Who is this guy? And that's where we are. And so to Mario's point, you have to imagine that Manchester City are favorites. And maybe we are somewhat biased in that we get to watch Real Madrid on a weekly basis.
13:01And so we see all the flaws and we're yet to see all the qualities. And so therefore we kind of go, Manchester City has to be better than this. Even though they haven't been great, they have to be better than this. That's how I'm coming into this matchup. Are Real Madrid at home for it, Stevie? I don't know. That should be a good thing, but I don't know whether it will be. You'd expect Real Madrid to go forward because the crowd demands it. But that just makes it harder for them defensively. With the pace that City have, with the smarts that City have going forward. and as averages Man City are defending, right now they're a step ahead of Real Madrid.
13:43So even though Real Madrid are at home, I'm finding it very hard to back them to win the game. We will, of course, be talking about it on ESPN FC this week as the Champions League returns to the calendar and we'll stay up to date with all of it, with Real Madrid bouncing back today after those back-to-back losses in La Liga. 16:07Liverpool put their results against Wolves just a few days ago in the Premier League behind them by beating them 3-1 in the FA Cup fifth round to book their spot in the quarterfinals of the competition. Andy Robertson, Mosela and Curtis Jones scored the goals for Liverpool. there was a late consolation goal for Wolves which does mean that Liverpool keep up their record of conceding past the 90th minute but in the end it was a lot more comfortable from Anna Slotzmann. Today we had Alex Aljo and Nader Manua pitchside they caught up with Andy Robertson after the game. Andy congratulations through to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup and a much better night than Tuesday as well.
16:44How do you sum up tonight? Yeah, much better performance. I thought from minute one I thought we were more on top had a bit more tempo about our play Tuesday was a bit too slow and things like that so it's very rare in football you get to play the same team so quickly after it so we knew we had three days to go and put it right obviously in a different competition but this one was obviously you're either in or you're out if you win you go through and if you're out then if you lose you don't so we knew we had to up our performance today and I think we'd done that and I thought it was a real controlled performance, Gordon Osies in front and then we didn't really look back from there Yeah it was you who turned the game around, goal then and assist Talk me through both of those.
17:21Yeah, the goal was probably rare. I've not had many of them in my Liverpool career. Obviously, it was a good time. The ball came to me and I just thought that it was a perfect time to go and do it. Thankfully, it was a good strike. Then, obviously, so quickly after it, you get the kind of counter-attack where you can go and attack. Rio fed me in and obviously Mo was in the back post, which he always is. To get two goals so quickly is so pleasing. Then I thought we controlled the game really well. They'd obviously go and get the third. Disappointing to lose the clean sheet at the end. but in cup football it's all about getting through.
17:53As you talk about the game there, it seems like you're reflecting in a very calm manner but with no nerves at all at half-time when it was 0-0, it almost feels like it's playing out the same way it did on the Tuesday. To an extent, but that's where the experienced lads have to come in and we don't panic. Wills are probably now in the position in the league. It's not their position because since the new managers came in, they've been so much more competitive here. they've beat us, they've beat Aston Villa they've drew against Arsenal so at the start of the season they were probably giving away far too many points but now they're competing in every single game so when we're 0-0 it's up to us to not panic and try and keep creating, trying to keep going and I think we've done that really well and obviously then when you get your noses in front it's up to us to then be professional after that and I thought we'd done that well.
18:38And for you now, how do you feel looking towards these last few weeks of the season? Where do you feel the team is at this moment? It's hard to answer because we've been so up-down this season and we're trying to put a finger on it, we're trying to search for that consistency and we need to find that. If we want to win anything this season, obviously we're still in two trophies, but if we do that then we have to be consistent because we can't put in, say for instance, a performance on Tuesday. If we play like we do today, from now until the end of the season, I do believe that no team will want to play us, but if we play like we do Tuesday then I think everyone would want to play us.
19:08So we have to find that consistency, we've been trying to find it all season, we've got a relatively young squad, a new squad, and we're still trying to find that and we're trying to guide the lads to do that and hopefully we can find that for the last part of the season. Speaking of young squad, 17-year-old Rio Ngamua starting this evening. You see him every day in training. We don't see as much of him, but he was unbelievable tonight. Yeah, look, he's a joy to play with. You know, he's got no fear. I just said to him before the game, you know, I wanted him to focus on his decision-making because at times he can pick the wrong decision.
19:36Of course, he's only 17, but I thought today was his best game. I thought in terms of decision-making, when to pass, when to play, when to go in behind, I thought his all-round performance was really, really good today. and he's a great kid, always wants to learn, always wants to listen. Him and Trey, I thought Trey and Ione was excellent when he came on and these two lads are the ones that are with us every single day, week in, week out, all the other lads kind of come in and out but they two are the mainstays and they're a credit to their families, both lovely kids, both wanting to work hard, wanting to listen to us and they've got a massive future ahead of them but the hearing now is pretty good as well.
20:09How much belief Liverpool can win this competition this season? Yeah, look, obviously we're going to be one of eight in it now and we have to believe this our fans demand that we believe our club demand that we believe and fortunately some of us have won it before and we know how good the days are out in Wembley and we want to get there again now we're one game away from Wembley and anything can happen but again we need to find that consistency if we perform like today then I believe we can but we need to show that we can do that A massive game on Tuesday in the Champions League Correct A rare weekend off but then we go to Tuesday so we look forward to that one Brilliant, thank you so much Thank you very much guys Congratulations Congratulations.
20:44Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you. See you later. We'll be getting more word from the guys in just a moment. But first, we want to get the reaction from Stevie Nicholl as to what Andy Robertson had to say and also the fact that Liverpool got this win. I thought it was great. It was very sensible, very straight to the point. He won't try to kid anybody. He wasn't throwing out the lines of, oh, you know, we're doing this. He said exactly how it is. They need to be more consistent. if they want to win any of the trophies they're in now. So, no, I thought, I mean, it couldn't have been more honest and straightforward and correct.
21:21Oh, OK. Stevie, comfortable, would we say, tonight? Yes. Makes a change. We don't get to say that too much. Alex and Nadim are with us now. Yeah, we don't get to say too much comfortable. At least Stevie doesn't when he's watching Liverpool recently. But today, Alex, they got the job done. Yeah, they certainly did. and Andy Robertson always speaks so well, doesn't he? And I'm sure he'd like to be playing more, but he didn't say that and he stepped up tonight when it mattered. Yeah, absolutely. I think he's somebody who understands that the opportunities that he has now aren't going to be the same as, say, they were one, two, three years ago when he was an integral part of this Liverpool side.
21:58But he has to be prepared. He has to be ready. And you can see how much it means to him as well. I think the way that he spoke was very, very honest, as Stevie said. But in a way which wasn't really disparaging to say some of the negatives that they have had, I think he's acknowledged them and understands that if they want to be successful they have to find a way to get through those and that's as far as it comes you can't really argue with that and I just like the fact that he's the one who scored that first goal he got the assist for the second goal and that's the thing that put the game to bed and yes maybe he has his fingerprints on that goal that Wolves scored with some of the decision making We didn't mention that to him, no no we left that well alone but the fact is they're in the hat for the next round that's the significance of it and I think he's still a massive player for this club especially between now and the end of the season And comparing their first half performance with their second half performance, how much better were they when they just moved the ball a bit quicker?
22:43Listen, the first half performance was so bad that somebody standing really close to me thought that Liverpool were going to go into extra time in this game. And I can't think who that is, but maybe it was you. Based on that first half performance, that's all I'm saying. Maybe it was you. It might have been. No, no, no, no. You've got to trust the process. You came so close. Well, yeah. But I think, in the end, Liverpool were the better side. I think if it was going to be a case of Wolves winning two games in a row against Liverpool, I'd have been very, very surprised. I think they always had the quality and in certain moments they stepped up and they showed it.
23:10Defensively, it wasn't amazing for Liverpool, but it didn't need to be. And in terms of the attack, they did what they needed to do. Scored some good goals, took some confidence, and the game was basically done. You're taking off the likes of Van Dijk and so on. That's a great position to be in with another big game coming up on Tuesday. Liverpool had 20 shots on Tuesday. Wolves had four. Tonight, Nedham, Liverpool had 20 shots. Wolves had four. That's blown my mind, by the way. Yeah, so I think Wolves are less efficient today and look what happens. Yeah, and I think in some ways, that's what summed up from my perspective, that the game on Tuesday is almost an anomaly for a side to have that much possession, to have the shots that they had and to not win the game.
23:44The way that this game has panned out is how you'd expect to pan out more often than not. And I think Liverpool, as we've seen, they're very much deserving winners and, you know, they did what they needed to do. Yeah, well done. You almost got it right. Almost. Not quite. Nadeem snitching on Alex there. Alex, Stevie agreed with you. He almost thought after that first half that it was going to work to be fine. It did close with me that half-time. That was definitely the case. Thank you. Thank you. I'm glad I'm not on my own here. No, no, no. Thanks, Stevie. Thank you. No, no, no. No, no, no. No, no, no.
24:11Let's not do this because Stevie is anxious because he wants Liverpool to do well. You just misread the game. Stevie speaks for himself. Listen, someone feels noble. All I would say, Alex, is that you don't want to be on Stevie's side all the time. Take it today, but not all the time. OK, OK. I'll take it today. Thank you. Let me tell you guys this because you didn't mention to Andy Robertson, because why would you? that late goal conceded but in the commentary Maka wasn't bothered about it Stevie was bothered about it though before we get the thoughts of the team here he is on a slot on it it is frustrating not to keep a clean sheet especially for players defenders goalkeepers who put so much in and work so hard to keep them away from world it's very frustrating to see that we We give away hardly any chance and still we concede goals, but I can't believe that it will go on like this, so there will also be moments that things will change for us.

25:08As it happened with the set-pieces, things will go back to normal, especially because we have one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but we have to give him a chance to make a save. A deflected shot three days ago is for every goalkeeper impossible to save. All right, first of all, let's get Stevie's thoughts on it. Well, listen, I was brought up that... A while back. It was a wee while ago. It was a wee while ago. That the basics of the game are the most important thing, right? And so when you have 11 players whose basics are at such a high standard, then that's when your ability that you have in the team will then take over.
25:55But when you're making mistake after mistake, whether it's defensively, whether it's giving the ball away, whether it's not taking your chances, that means that the game can sometimes come down to one basic error. But if you've taken care of all those things, then when it comes down to a basic thing to do, you don't make a mistake. Your standards are so high, your concentration's there, that you don't make mistakes. and it doesn't matter if you're 3-0, 5-0 or 10-0. If you've got a certain mindset and a mentality, then you don't let that goal in at the end. And that is, again, I said it yesterday or the other day, that goal is a microcosm of the problems that Liverpool have, one of the problems Liverpool have had because their basics have been way below the standard they need to be.
26:46You would have never let that happen, Naden, would you?
26:52Nobody check my Wikipedia please. Maybe I would have let that happen a few times. But what I would say from my perspective on that is when the game went to 3-0, I think myself, Ale, Stevie, lots of people who've played in the past, you say things like, for example, right, the game's done, let's get a clean sheet. That becomes the next focus because you know, in terms of a win itself, it's right there for you. And I don't think there's been a goal which I've conceded which hasn't mattered to some level and you know of importance within the game itself and I think the goal itself it's just a long ball from the goalkeeper by the way a lot more accurate than during the warm-ups yeah it's just it's a long ball over the top for somebody running into the space I'm glad you brought it up one of the worst types of goals that you can see I'm glad you brought that up because yeah we did want to take a look back at that Naden protecting Alex even though he wasn't protecting her afterwards with her predictions so we decided to go back over the footage and Alex had mentioned that there were two times that it happened it's not that one it's not this it's not this one I promise you there's another one I promise you there's another one tell you what yeah there's another one where she nearly died not every hero wears a cape and neither does need them honestly that makes me look like I'm such a drama queen making a fuss out of nothing.
28:13I know you are, but that's fine. It was inches away. It was inches away. It just wasn't caught on camera. But believe me, trust me. Anyway, anyway, anyway, anyway. Kind of the football thing. Lo and behold, Stephen Mannerman, one of the best attackers of his generation, is saying the goal that his team conceded didn't matter. From a defensive standpoint, it always matters. You know, this is where there can be a real different splitting mindset. And that will matter to Alisson. That will matter to the back four. If the goal didn't matter, Sabah's like wouldn't be running back. Robertson wouldn't be running back.
28:40People in midfield wouldn't be running back. Of course it matters. And yes, they're delighted to be in the draw for the next round. But there is just that mark again. And going forward, the more times you put stuff like this on film, the next team that plays against them, they'll think, well, maybe we can just go and kick the ball long and have a great chance coming from it. Well, there you go. Sloppiness, it's a terrible thing to have at really terrible times. I am curious, though, when you hear Arnest Zlot say something like, well, things are going to go back to normal. Can I ask a question?
29:09what is normal for Liverpool this season? Because back to normal means what? Back to normal, what has been normal this season is for them to give up goals late. We talked about it endlessly in the pregame. Back to normal means chaos at the end of matches. Back to normal means dropping points unnecessarily so in the league. Back to normal means struggling defensively. Back to normal means disconnected in the midfield. That has been normal this season. So while I suppose that I get what he's trying to say, back to normal or normal this season, it's not the normal that everybody would want. What's back to normal for Liverpool?
29:46Winning comfortably? Which normal? Exactly. Are we talking about last year's normal? If we're talking about last year's normal, that's not going to happen. You know, and the slot's gone, well, eventually it's going to go back to normal. What? Are we eight months into the season? It's not normal. We're nearly eight months into the season and this has become the normal. Yep. So, no, unless you work on it and figure it out, it's not just going to all of a sudden happen on its own. It's called concentration, hard work and coaching. Because right now that back line needs coaching big time. Nathan doesn't just save Alex.
30:26He actually made a decision. He made a decision. Took a step back. Our team have actually found the key moment. We actually didn't show it before. This is the key moment. All right, here we go.
30:40No, no, doesn't do it justice. Doesn't do it justice. It was that moment. It was that moment. He did say sorry, but you couldn't see exactly what happened there. Like a torpedo, honestly. It's ridiculous how hard he kicked the ball towards her. And I had to warn her. I think it might have been intentional, you know. I think it might have been intentional. I hope not. I'm glad we won't be seeing him in the next round. Yeah, they love it, don't they? Do the footballers love trying to get the pitch side reporters? Of course they do. Try and get them all the same. We know that. Alex and Nadem, is this the duo this weekend?
31:11And where are you off to across the weekend with the FA Cup? No. I'm very much down in tools after tonight. I can't work two days in a row. This is impossible. You guys know me well now. I can never do that. I'm off to Wrexham, Chelsea tomorrow. Yeah. So looking forward to that. Yeah, I'm not going there. Are you working Sunday? I'm not working Sunday. Okay. I'm not doing it either. but I will be at West Ham on Monday night for the big one, them against Brentford. Brentford, yes. The big one. Yes, the big one. And then the draw as well on Monday. Yes, it all balances out. Thanks so much for being with us, guys.

However, they are still top of the table ahead of Lens by only four points right now though, having played a game more. Frank Leboeuf is joining us now. What's wrong with PSG, Frank? Oh, many things, many things. And Lens will be delighted.
33:40They're going to play against Messe tomorrow, so hopefully they're going to get the three points. They're going to chase Paris Saint-Germain. And Paris Saint-Germain is not doing great. And where they're not doing great, where they were the best at, in the middle of the park. and with Vitinha, with Neves, with Fabien Riz, that was absolutely fantastic last season. Well, yeah, a year already ago. But today, and we saw that also in the Champions League against Monaco again, where they were so weak in the middle of the park. And Vitinha, Zahe Emery, and after Lee, who substituted Fernandes, lost the three balls that allowed Monaco to score the three goals that they scored.
34:20But on top of it, they were very much inexistent, invisible. And we know that the impact that you can have and you have to put on when you play in the middle of the park is crucial in order to win the battle. And when you think about the next game they're going to play against Chelsea with Caicedo, I think Rhys James may be in the middle of the park if Marlo Gusto plays on the right back. And Fernandes at the top of the triangle. That's going to be a hard task. if Chelsea plays the way they play against Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain has to be worried because the way they play, the inconsistency that they show, on top of it, the forward line were at the best last season again.
35:03He's very far away from their best level. Dwayne was inexistent today. Dembele came on, tried to do what he had to do, but otherwise that was nothing. Bacola runs a lot, but misses so much opportunity that you're not worried about any chances that he can get. And at the back, Marquinhos wasn't there. And we didn't see much about Pacho, Mendes and Hakimi today. So, yes, I'm worried about the game that he's going to get against Chelsea if they play that way. Yeah, let's throw it forward to that game because it's coming up on Wednesday in the Champions League. PSG will be at home, Frank. And we know that we just got to see Dembele coming back in this game against Monaco tonight.
35:45So we expect to see more of him in this clash. Give us your biggest concerns against this Chelsea, Frank. You know this Chelsea well as well.
35:56Well, again, if Paris Saint-Germain plays the way they play today or they play in the last game that they play in the Champions League against Monaco again, where the power that they used to have in the middle of the park is not there anymore, against the Chelsea, where? We don't know what kind of Chelsea we're going to get. But even the Chelsea we saw against Aston Villa, that's going to be a very hard time for Paris Saint-Germain. Because we see that if Chelsea is strong and they are consistent in the middle of the park and they do what they have to do, they can be a threat. And on top of it with João Pedro, which I think is back to his best and what we saw during the World Cup tournament.
36:37And remember, the only team we beat when Paris Saint-Germain was at the top of the top was Chelsea. and became champion of the world. So you have to be concerned about the fact that Paris Saint-Germain is far away from the Paris Saint-Germain, who played very well the last season, the last six months, and is very close to what we saw at the beginning of the last season. And that's, for Luis Enrique, something that he has to change. Will he be able to change that in two, three days? Yeah, if Mbélé comes back at his best, if Dui shows his best, it's possible for them to score goals. But how are they going to defend?
37:19How are they going to work in the middle of the park? I don't have the answer. It's become a modern European rivalry, PSG against Chelsea. And obviously, Frank just mentioned there the Club World Cup final was between these two. PSG are favourites, though, going into this clash this week. How do you see it? And they should be favourites because of the equity that they have built in this tournament. The problem is that we are making that assessment based on what we have seen from PSG last season. If we base it upon what we have seen from PSG so far this season, whether it's in Ligue 1 or Champions League, you see vulnerabilities.
38:01You see concerns. And the area that would concern me the most if I were PSG, I may have had issues in the back. I may have issues maybe creating enough opportunities or scoring those opportunities. But what made them the best team in Europe last season was the strength and dynamic control of the midfield. Where players like Vitinha were playing at a high level, world-class elite level. Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz, and you think about how good they were in that area of the field. And when you see them play today, or you go back to the last game that they played against Monaco in Champions League, where Monaco, with a man down, should have scored a late goal to tie it fast, had a chance and missed the header.
38:54you're saying this midfield vulnerable exposed disconnected not controlling the pace of the game not controlling the quality of possession not having sort of this this this superiority because they have been so clean on the ball no they're turning the ball over in bad areas and defensively they're not close to people or close enough to people to go and press and repress so that they can regain possession of the ball in advanced positions. PSG is vulnerable. They are vulnerable and if there was ever a time to play against PSG, I think it's right now. So Chelsea, get excited. You have a chance, but you have to play at a high level in order to take advantage of PSG's vulnerabilities.
39:34Who have you got, PSG or Chelsea, to go through after the two legs? You know, when the draw came out and we were talking about it, I had PSG as the team that I didn't want to play against. But, as the boys have already mentioned, we're talking about the Monaco game. Monaco completely outplayed them in the last Champions League game. At home. Completely dominated them. And the fact that PSG going forward have got pace and ability is why they managed to salvage themselves and actually get through this tie. If I think of the Chelsea that we saw the weekend, I'm thinking, my goodness, if this Chelsea turns up, they could dominate PSG.
40:23However, you know, the Champions League itself, teams have a, teams can, they may struggle in the league. Look at Liverpool. Look at Tottenham, the best example. Probably look as though they're going to get relegated. But right now, in terms of Champions League, they look great. So I'm going to hang my hat on the fact that it's the Champions League. and it's a big game and a big night. And this is a big night for PSG because of the way they've been playing. So I'm just going to say PSG edges it, but I'm not saying that with a huge amount of confidence. Okay. Well, we will be keeping up to date with everything that goes on in the Champions League right here on ESPN FC.

42:20Bayern Munich played early in the Bundesliga and beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-1 to go 14 points clear at the top of the table. Four goals scored, and that's without Harry Kane, who has a slight calf issue. Luis Diaz, Conrad Leimer, Jamal Musiala from the penalty spot and Nico Jackson with the goals for company's men. To the other competitions this season, and next up for them is Atalanta. in the Champions League. I think I'm right in saying they've never met in a competitive fixture. However, Atalanta have been the German slayers so far, but with all due respect you would say that this version of Bayern should very much be able to get past this Atalanta side because we just saw what they did tonight without Harry Kane.
43:02Are they the best team right now in Europe, Ali?
43:07If the final were to be played tomorrow and Bayern Munich are in it, you're thinking who's playing better than them currently and it's hard to come up with a name. Some people will throw Arsenal out there and that would be a tricky matchup for Bayern Munich given the fact that Bayern Munich struggles to defend set pieces whereas Arsenal is very good at attacking set pieces. Having said all that, while you can say that Atalanta has been the German slayer, well, that is everybody else in Bundesliga and that's how Bundesliga has been this season. It's Bayern Munich and then everybody else. It hasn't been competitive.
43:43It really hasn't. And so I don't think you can equate the success of Atalanta against other German teams to somehow then make the assumption, and it's quite the leap to say, well, against Bayern Munich, they're going to slay them too. No, it doesn't quite work out that way. That mathematics simply doesn't add up for me. Bayern Munich is far better in all facets of the game than Atalanta. And if they play up to their standard, I think Bayern Munich will go through. And Atalanta would have had a good run. And that's about it. Bayern Munich with the Champions League this season, Stevie. They're absolutely in the equation.
44:25I agree 100 % with what Ali said about this particular tie. And yes, I guess if you're one of the other sides that are looking to win it, if you can avoid Bayern Munich right now, the way they're playing, then use happily avoid them. Yes, absolutely. That's how things are looking. Bayern getting things underway in the Bundesliga. More games to come this weekend. Be sure to be with us for them. ESPN Plus has you covered every single weekend for all the games in Germany.
44:56Napoli beat Torino 2-1 today in the Serie A. Santos and Elmas with the goals for Conte's men. That puts them to within just a point of Milan ahead of them in second. but they have played again more have Napoli and there'll be more talk about the Serie A on the Gab and Jules show. Make sure to check that out. They drop every single Monday and Thursday. All right, that's all we've got time for in the latest edition of ESPN FC, but Frank's sticking around to answer your questions with these guys, so stay right where you are. Extra Time is on the way next.
45:32Welcome into the latest edition of Extra Time. We have Ali and Stevie here in the studio and Frank Leboeuf is joining us to answer your questions tonight. Oh, I did want to say thank you, Frank. I was watching the other day when you chose Middlesbrough to be one of the promoted championship teams. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. You know that. You know how much I love you. Thank you, Frank. We saw it. It did not go unnoticed. All right, guys. Who's done the best managerial job this season from the perspective of taking over a club mid-season? Nuno with West Ham, Carrick with Manchester United, Matarazzo with Real Sociedad, or anyone else?
46:17Well, I'm going to take, let me just go ahead and take Matarazzo because he has this team playing for a title in Copa del Rey final against Atlético Madrid. And Real Sociedad were all over the place. He showed up and without sacrificing his philosophy of pressing higher the field and attacking, he has given this team some structure defensively, has changed really the mindset of the group. They're scoring more goals, they're creating more chances. It's a team that is, even though they're willing to press higher the field, they're more disciplined than they were before. He has really had an impact and has made this team actually fun to watch, which they weren't all that much fun before.
47:00Any takers, guys, for anyone else on that list? Thank you. Oh, sorry. Go on, Frank. You go ahead, Frank. Oh, I think not a long time ago, I would have said Unai Emery because what he was capable of doing, you know, with Aston Villa was absolutely fantastic. But lately, I have to change my mind because of the bad result that Aston Villa went through. So, can I go with Vence and company? I mean, I like the way that he thinks of football, the way that he makes his team play. Yeah, it may be easy for Bayern Munich, but I have to say that the way that he does it, it's only for the Premier League or not?
47:40No, this is a slight caveat, it's managers who've taken over mid-season. Mid-season, Frank, mid-season. Okay. Well, but yeah, but Michael, I'm sorry. I'm absolutely wrong in all the answers, so I'm sorry. Okay. Carrick is a little bit too early. It's like Liam Rossignor. Can I go with Sir Alex Ferguson? Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. No, I'm with Ali. I'm going to go with Materazzo. All right, Stevie, are you going to say it? What? Are you going to give Carrick any props? Well, I actually was. But I think Frank might have... Just a little line there changed my mind. Because Matarazzo... Oh, not company.
48:30Matarazzo, no question, has got to the final. Major final. That's big time. And I was thinking... I was actually thinking the answer was Carrick. Because, you know, carrying Manchester United as opposed to Real Sociedad is two different things. I mean, pressure-wise, the whole thing. And the fact that there's absolutely zero noise now around Old Trafford. Every person, every pundit, every supporter, I think, is Man United are comfortably going to be the top four, probably the top three. But, thanks, Edith, the season hasn't finished yet. He just gave it a way out of saying Carrick at Manchester United.
49:16So the fact that Matarazzo's got them to a final, it has to be Matarazzo. Sounds like Carrick at Manchester United to me. Don't blame Frank. It's like everything you said in the middle there about Carrick at Manchester United, it sounds like that's who you should go for. Well, that was what I was thinking until Frank said. Not what I said. That was Ali. Why are we deflecting, Stevie? Don't deflect. Just go ahead. Take Carrick. It's all right. Michael Carrick. The thing, if I may, the thing is about what Stevie was just eluding, the impact that Carrick made in such a short time to Manchester United, where it was almost one of the worst times in the history of Manchester United, that's been erased in four, five games, six games maybe, from the way that Carrick was able to change his team.
50:16And that's amazing because it's kind of a miracle that we'd have just seen. And it's because of him. So we could have said Carrick as well because we don't judge Manchester United anymore like we used to do before he arrived. Okay. Sounds like two for Carrick there. It really does, doesn't it? Two for Carrick. Reluctantly. Luis Diaz, best signing of the window for any club, Ali. Yes. Or as my German friends would say. Ja! Yes. He talked about changing a team. And this is a team that was already made and built for success. and yet his unpredictability and how he plays his position makes this team have more variety in the attack.
51:10And so we know Harry Kane and we know Michael Elisa and then Jamal Musiala is coming back from injury and he's playing well again. And so then it's like, well, what can Luis Diaz give this group? He's giving them assists. He's giving them goals. He's giving them energy, movement, variety. He has been everything that Bayern Munich would have wanted, and more, he's been excellent. I have a question. No, of course not. But I have a question for Stevie. Is there a right reason for Liverpool to get rid of Gias? They said something. Not a journalist is asking, why did you get rid of Luiz Gias? Why did you leave?
52:01Well I think, I think you're spending the money on Isak, you're spending the money on Verts, you have Gak4 and you're getting offered what nearly 70 million? 75 million. 75 million for a guy who's 29 years old. I mean, I mean hindsight's dead easy isn't it? I mean, I'm thinking now, if only Diaz doing what he's doing, not just for Liverpool last year, but what he's doing for Bayern. But at the time, it seemed like a very sensible and great business deal to get 75 mil for a 29-year-old when you already have Gakpo and then you bring in Verts and Isak. So there weren't too many people complaining.
52:49Let me put it that way. All the so-called experts, nobody said Liverpool are crazy, Liverpool are mad. Why are they doing this? Nobody said that. So. So that's my answer, Frankie boy. Yeah. You're an expert in my mind, Stevie. That's fair. You're not a so-called expert. You're an expert. Stevie. That's, sorry, that's very fair. But it's not the question, what are you getting rid of Luis Diaz? It's after six months, say, why did you get rid of Diaz? That's more a question nowadays, you know, but I understand what was your answer and you're absolutely right. That was a great business. Yeah. Well, it's numbers as well, because you're giving Salah a contract.
53:34You bring in Isaac, you bring in Invertz. So you've been offered 70 million for a guy who you don't want to lose, but it doesn't make any sense. A, does he play? B will take the 70 mil. Stevie, after today's game, is there a case to drop Gakpo and play Engamoa alongside Eketike and Salah? I would have done it before today's game. I would have played Eketike through the middle and I would have played Engamoa on the left-hand side and Gakpo would have sat. That's what I would have done. Ale, who's better at defending, Trent or Cancelo?
54:17Wow. That's the rock there and this is the hard place. Wow. Kenny Beamu is the worst. Wow. It's quite easy this one, isn't it? Well, I'm going to say, what's the question again? I'm sorry. Who's better? Who is better at defending? OK. We don't want the overall game and what they offer anywhere else. Defending. Joao Cancelo is a better defender than Trent Alexander-Arnold. Trent Alexander-Arnold, and I say it in the presence of two defenders, He is an insult to defending. He is. What he does, you cannot call defending. Joao Cancelo, at the very least, throws his body around. You know, it's amazing when you think of Trent, right?
55:03You know, we talk about the greatest players ever. And people talk about Maradona, Zappellis and Kreuz. And all of these names, they would all have played in any era. all of these guys Gerrard Roy Keane Bergkamp I mean they would have played in any era the one thing you can say about these two guys neither of them would play in any era I mean Trent wouldn't get a game in the 80s Trent would be playing for a second or third division team well certainly not as a right back not as a right back he may have been a midfield type winger But even then, you still had to run back. So that's the difference between those two guys.
55:50Going forward, yeah, can't argue, but in terms of the way they played the game, they wouldn't have played in any era, that's for sure. Frank, what are your memories of scoring against South Korea in Seoul in 2002? That was a great goal. Was the French team confident going into the 2002 World Cup? And what do you think went wrong? Oh, but especially that game. That game was played like five days before the World Cup. We were already exhausted. I remember that I think Patrick Vieira had played like 67 games in the season. And remember that because of the monsoon, the World Cup was played earlier.
56:35And I remember Franz Bickenboer saying that that was insane to play that and nobody had the time to recover. and I think we were not the only team, well we were maybe the worst of the big teams, but we weren't the only team not being good enough for that World Cup. But we had to play that game and yes, I scored the last goal, the last minute of the game. But I remember the day before saying to Marcel Desailly, I think we have to rest some players, you know, it would be better. And I talked to the coach and the coach said, no, by contract we have to play the best team. I said, well, that's insane.
57:13Five days before the first game. And when we left the field and we went to the dressing room, I remember watching everybody and everybody had their head down because they were like out of breath. Like, my God, what's going on? And I was very pessimistic about the first game. We were right to be, and I was right to be pessimistic. I think that game finished us for the World Cup and the result wasn't surprising for us. We were out of, I think it was the end of the generation, but I think physically we were exhausted after that year. What about the goal that he scored? I want to know about the goal.
57:57Me too, of course. Me too, Frank. Oh, that was a cross, and I controlled the balls with my chest, I let it down, and I volleyed it in the top corner. Ah, there it is. Last second of the game. Not too bad. Not too bad. Not too shabby. That was good, Frank. That was good to me. You see how he sat up and controlled the ball with his chest again? Yeah, he gave it a four. As you should. You have to do it with style. It's always the style matters. The style matters, you know. You control with the chest, you let it back, and you volley with the outside of the foot, you know? Like, slang, you know? He's finished like that.
58:38Italian player will say, Eccolo qua. Killer K knows exactly. Eccolo qua. Yep. OK, Stevie, did you ever settle up with your plough guy? Oh. I don't know about you, Stevie. Take me through it. He's gone rogue, he's disappeared. Can't get in touch with him. For those that don't know, give us the context of the question. Well, fortunately, we only had 18 inches or so a couple of weeks ago. Just the 18. And so we got this guy's number from the local paper. He had advertised looking for people to cloud their drive. So we thought, perfect. Call them up. Can you come Monday? Yeah. this was on this was on the Saturday so it was gonna start snowing Sunday all through Monday so he said yeah I'll come Monday soon as it finishes it's due to finish around three four o 'clock in the afternoon soon as it's finished I'll come Bob's your uncle job done perfect I was off wasn't working so like you know what that's great so basically you're sitting in your couch with your I'm sat with a couple of you know what's watching the telly, in front of the fire.
59:59And all of a sudden it was about nine o 'clock at night and we had 18 inches of snow on the drive. I thought this guy was coming just after four o 'clock. So I texted him and he said yeah we're a bit behind, it could be it could be a bit later on but we'll get to you. Don't worry. So I thought, alright, great. Got to midnight, still nothing. Nothing we can do about that. So I went to bed. I woke up about five o 'clock and I go to the window and I can see Eleanor outside with a shovel. The guy just completely blanked us. So I had to get up. So by the time I got out there I got out there about half five got up got my gear on still dark and me and Elna ploughed the shoveled the drive we finished at 8.30 took us three hours wasn't happy wow the guys gone wrong surprise surprise you should put out a complaint in the local paper well no I wouldn't only if I was able to actually write what I wanted to write I don't think they'd allow that.
1:01:18While I'm concerned about the driver not showing up, the thing that is most shocking about any of this is just you being up at five in the morning. What? I got for a wee. Oh no. You got for a wee. No, that was the mistake. Well, again, I had the five seconds, didn't I? When I looked out the window. Do I go back? I need to go and help. Hey, he was up at 4.30 the other week for an FA Cup game. Bright and breezy. Yeah, but I've no choice. Renaissance member you are. I've no choice I can get up. He's a changed man. He's a changed man. All right, guys, thank you so much for sending in your questions.
1:01:59We'll be back tomorrow to do it all over again. Frankie's goal.
