0:09Brian Pata, senior defensive lineman from Miami, gunned down. The key to this case, it's Brian. Boys, ripped him. An hour before he died, he was on the phone arguing with somebody. This might be a hit. You want the truth. They just want a conviction. In place under arrest. We had a killer amongst us. Murder at the U. Listen now.

0:34Welcome in to the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Dan Thomas, joined by Ali Moreno and Stevie Nicker. We'll kick things off in the Champions League. Four matches today will start in Portugal. Benfica taking on Real Madrid. So much drama, of course, when these two teams met in the group stages. This time it will be Real Madrid who would be leaving Portugal with the victory. A 1-0 win against Jose Mourinho's team. A brilliant goal from Vinicius Junior. would hand the Spanish side the lead going into that second leg in the Spanish capital. But unfortunately, overshadowing that brilliant goal is what happened afterwards.

1:09Vinicius Jr. went to the corner to celebrate. Apparently, it was too much celebrating as he would get booked. There would be then a melee that would follow. And within that melee, there's suggestions that Presiani said something racist towards Vinicius Jr. He told the referee. The referee then initiated racism protocol. The game was stopped for over eight minutes. During that time, audio was checked to see whether or not Vinicius Jr.'s accusations could be substantiated. They couldn't, so the game would then continue. Real Madrid win by one goal to nil. We'll talk, obviously, about the game in a moment.

1:49It would be a miss of us not to start with the alleged racist incident in that second half. This is what Chirmeni had to say about it. this can't happen. Vinny told us the guy called him a monkey with his shirt covering his face. He said he didn't see anything. Vinny told us we had to keep playing. I don't know what to say now. We'll talk, but this can't happen. I said that if there's a problem, we leave as a team. That's it. But we talked and we said we had to win. Obviously, as we're going live now, there's a lot more post-match reaction coming. We'll be hearing from Jose Mourinho. I'll let you know exactly what he had to say and anyone else from each camp.

2:28But as we stand at the moment, Frank has welcomed Frank Leboeuf into the show. Obviously, it's such a brilliant goal for Vinicius Jr. And it's so disappointing that this is what we start the show with. Yeah, it's very sad because, as you said, the goal is absolutely fantastic. And we don't know why he got a yellow card. I don't think it's because he danced around the corner flag and maybe something happened with the fans, blah, blah, blah, but whatever. But I don't think that Vinny is that twisted that suddenly, after scoring a goal, you know, decides to make up some stories. So we don't have the evidence, and the referee did what he had to do, therefore stop the game, investigate, and keep on playing because he had nothing.

3:19He had no evidence. The player put his shirt when he said something to Vinny, so there's nothing to complain about that. But we're pretty sure that something has been said and that Vinny reacted to some abuse, I'm pretty sure. Again, no evidence, so we won't say anything and the game has to go on. And as Tramini said, they had to come back and they had to play and win that game and that's it. Very disappointed by the fans, by the way, because to boo Vinny was a real shame because Vinny didn't do anything bad. So we've heard from Can you just remind me what Jose Mourinho has said I just missed that What Vinny said And what Presiani said Are two different things That's what Jose Mourinho has come out Well and I imagine that Of course Jose Mourinho is going to defend his player And you would expect that to be the case And it's not like Presiani is going to go to Jose Mourinho And say See Jose what I told Vinny was this And he misunderstood what I said look, we don't have proof.

4:26We don't have evidence. We don't have the smoking gun and we don't have the video nor the audio. But it is more likely than not that Prestiani said something to Vinnie that he should not have said. Because as we focus on Prestiani and the look in his eyes, when Vinnie says, I heard what Prestiani has said. And the reaction of Vinnie, the look in Prestiani's eyes is of a man who said, oh. This could be troublesome. Now, it's merely observation. It's merely speculation. But to Frank's point, so often we focus on Vinnie Jr. for the wrong reasons. And so often he is in the middle of things because he chooses to be in the middle of things.

5:10And he is the culprit of problems. Today is not that day. Today that's not the case. And for those out there that may say, well, he had it coming because he went and celebrated the goal in the manner in which he did, you are 100 % wrong. Vinny Jr. scores a great goal, and he is well within his rights to go and celebrate with a corner flag. And I don't want to hear it that this is sort of a new age of how people celebrate and it's inappropriate. No, no, no. In 1990, in the World Cup, Roy Armilla from Cameroon was celebrating the same way. This was more than 30 years ago. Okay, so if we're going to ask players to express themselves and enjoy the game and enjoy a goal, a great goal as he just scored, he's well within his rights to go and celebrate.

5:57And if you're a Benfica player and you are upset about it, you know what you can do? Stop him from scoring. That's the best way that you can do it. Now, the referee doesn't help the situation either. He, in dealing with Vinny at the time, in bringing the yellow car and not being able to control the back and forth, then allows Prestiani to come into the picture and then Prestiani said what he said. Again, I don't have the proof, but if you are to push me one way or another, I would suggest that Prestiani more likely than not is guilty of saying what Vinny said. Jose Mourinho has come out and said that he told Vinny, when you score a great goal, don't go and rile up the fans.

6:38Let me just tell you, and can I just tell you, players in that moment, in that scenario, never express themselves like that. Do you think that that's the sort of conversation that you would be covering your mouth? If that's exactly what you were saying, would you need to cover your mouth? You shouldn't express yourself this way and you shouldn't celebrate this way. No, no, no. Players don't talk like that. And so there would have been choice words. There would have been a reminder of somebody's family. There would have been a whole lot of things being said, but then there is a line. Right. And obviously, according to Vinny Jr., Prestiani crossed that line.

7:22I have to say, you know, I particularly have sat here this season and talked about how disappointed I've been and the way Vinny's conducted himself with the Alonso thing and all these other things that he's been getting up to. But you have to say, his maturity in this situation tonight has to be applauded. You know, the Vinny that we saw running off in the Barcelona game and throwing his baby sucker at the pram and all the carry-on, today he went about this exactly the way he should. He told the referee, he went and sat down, He wasn't running around fighting with people. He went and sat down.

8:06He calmed himself down. They got going again. He was the one that said, we need to play this and we need to win. And then he went back on the field and played as though nothing had happened, but just played his normal game. That's not the mature of any that we've seen so far this season. So he has to be applauded for that. I just want to amend something. It was Mourinho who told Vinicius Junior, when you score a great goal, don't go rile up the fans. This is what he said apparently when he went over and sat on the bench that we saw during that eight-minute break. Was there any, am I being naive here, was there any way Mitch Mourinho could have stepped in and taken Prestiani off?

8:46Well, but then at that point you're admitting guilt. Right. And you're no longer protecting your player. If Jose Mourinho wholeheartedly believes that Prestiani is innocent in this, no, you don't take him out. you leave him out there because, oh, by the way, he's an important player for you offensively, and you need him to make a difference for you, potentially scoring a game-tying goal or creating an opportunity. So you don't admit guilt by taking him out and say, well, he must have said something so you come off the field. You believe what your players told you. This is about Prestiana. It's not about Jose Mourinho.

9:21And it becomes a story about Jose Mourinho when he gets himself thrown out of the game because he's won in a second yellow card for Vinny. But as it pertains to this specific circumstance. If the player tells you that he hasn't said anything, you believe your player, right? As a manager, you have to believe your own players first and foremost, and you have to protect your own players first and foremost. Go on, Frank. You know, while I'm thinking about what happened, you know, when you go back to the dressing room and you're a black player from Benfica and you have to talk to Pristiani, That can be very tricky because, you know, if I'm a black guy and I talk to Pristiani and I would say, I want to know what happened.

10:10Why did you say something to him? And what did you say something to him? Why do you have to cover your mouth? Because if you had to cover your mouth, because you were saying something nasty, to say the least. And I want to know if you really say that, because have you seen the color of my skin? You are insulting all the people from there. So it's a big time. I don't know what Prostiani really said because we won't have the evidence. And I think he will deny for the rest of his life because that's such a big word. He will deny it. But again, I don't think Vinny is bipolar. I don't think after scoring a goal, you can get crazy and find another way to celebrate your goal and get crazy.

10:51No, Vinny heard what he heard. And I want to believe what he heard because he won't get that crazy after scoring a goal. It's impossible. And because the guys cover his face, we all figure that he wasn't very nice. So I feel very awkward today. I think about all the Presbyterian teammates as well. We are black. And that's appalling. If it really happened, that's appalling. And it could go further. and Jose Mourinho will have to clear that to make sure the dressing room stays OK. Because that can be... That can be damages. I find it funny. If there's one manager that shouldn't be telling anybody about riling up a crowd, it's him.

11:37I mean, sliding down the touchline the whole traffic. Running around with his finger at Barcelona. I mean, if there's one person who's a complete hypocrite telling somebody else not to rile the crowd up, is Mourinho. I want to make sure that we really hammer the point home of not victim blaming here. It's easy because of who Vinny is and has been as a player to say well he had it coming. And I want to make sure that people don't go down that path. Because whatever you may think of Vinny before today has nothing to do with him scoring a great goal, celebrating and then a minute later being told what apparently he was told by Prestiani.

12:22One thing is not connected to the other. The past of Vinny Jr. is not connected to the behavior today of Prestiani, and Prestiani should be the one that should be the focus, not Vinny. Vinny becomes the focus because of what Prestiani said and what the action, allegedly, what he said and what his actions were following the brilliance of Vinny Jr., which gets overlooked. Look, the brilliance of Vinny Jr. in the end somehow starts this thing up. But it's about Prestiani and an amazingly ignorant behavior that still happens, allegedly, in 2026. That we're still having these conversations. And that is deplorable.

13:06That is the thing that we should focus on. Vinny, I think I just saw on Instagram, if it's true, it's just put out a picture saying, see you at the Bernabeu. OK. Which I suppose is where Vinny will be looking to do is talking in that second leg, where Real Madrid, of course, will have a huge advantage, Steve. They were the much better side today. Yeah, they were. And of all the days, and we've been talking about Mbappe being the guy who's been carrying this team all season with his goals. My goodness, how he hasn't, how he's not going home with the ball with a hat-trick is beyond me. Ali said it in the first opportunity.

13:39You know, why he's not going with that ball with his left foot? It's just, it makes no sense. The fact that he's trying to do it with the outside of his right foot means he's going with the smallest surface area. Because you don't always have to hit it perfectly, but you've got to make contact with it. And then the worst one for me, actually, is the last one. He has done everything. He's cut inside. He's gone past three defenders. He's in the middle of the goal. All he's got to do is pick his spot, and he hits the goalkeeper. So for a guy that we've been praising to high heaven all season is the guy who could have killed this tie.

14:10Never mind having to go back there with just a one goal lead. But in the end, they didn't need Mbappe on top form because obviously Vinny gets the goal, Frank, and thoroughly deserved advantage they'll take to the Bernabeu. Real Madrid were good today. Very good, very good, very solid. I also loved Chouamini in the middle of the park, you know, working hard. Nothing to complain about the defence. Courtois made a great save also in the first half. Everybody was spot on. but Mbappé. But, you know, sometimes it happens. We're going to talk about Desiree Duet with Paris Saint-Germain, who was absolutely tremendous today.

14:47Sometimes it's your day and sometimes it's not. And Mbappé wasn't. You know, yeah, he should have tackled and put the left foot. On the second chance, he should have put the right foot and he put the left one. Everything was the other way around. And maybe it's for the best. Maybe today was off because he's been so successful, scoring so many goals that it can happen. And then you go back and start a new era. And it's what I want to wish him because it was good. In terms of playing, being involved, that was a good game from Mbappe. But it's true that the finishing wasn't there. A couple of things that made Real Madrid really good today.

15:24And you notice it with players that are coming back from injury. with Trent playing as a right back, you have a natural outlet down the right-hand side. And the quality of services that are coming from the right-hand side, one of those was the one that Kylian Mbappe should have scored with his left foot. Quality of passing, playing out of the back with Trent Alexander-Arnold is noticeable as well. And because Benfica didn't have a lot of the ball, then you don't really expose him defensively. Real Madrid also, with the presence of Trent Alexander-Arnold, free of Fede Valverde to join in the midfield.

15:58and that makes such a big difference for what Chua Menni now can do and Camavinga can do because it's now three players who have the legs to cover the space. And so Chua Menni looks a whole lot better because he's not covering 40 yards, he's covering 20 yards. And you've got 20 yards here for Valverde, and you've got 20 yards here for Camavinga, and the spacing of Real Madrid in the midfield, so much better. We talk about the structure of Real Madrid being a problem. Today, that wasn't the case. So having a natural right back, having a natural midfielder playing his position, covering the ground that needs to cover, and once they have possession of the ball and they find Alexander on the right-hand side, if I'm a striker for this team, I'm making runs inside the 18-yard box because I know the delivery is coming.

16:41Real Madrid, to your point, looked very good, professional, organized, well-structured. That hasn't been the case over the course of the season. It was today. Let's not forget, this is a Real Madrid side that sits top of La Liga as well. Of course, after the result yesterday between Barcelona and Girona. Girona with that 2-1 victory. What are we going for here, Ali? Exasperating. That's exactly what Barcelona were. And of course, they were exasperated not only with themselves, but with the officials. This is what Rafinha put on Instagram. We have a lot to improve on, but not just us. It's very complicated when the rules are different, whether it's you or against you.

17:20But if we have to play against everyone to win, it's OK. We're going to do it. This was, of course, in reference to what happened at the end of the game, where Koundé looked like he'd been fouled. The referee didn't give it. Obviously, Girona go on and score the winner. VAR would check it and not cancel out the goal. Since we've heard from the Spanish Federation, who have said this was a mistake, it should have been a foul. The referees have been demoted. VAR have been suspended. So, overall, Barcelona feel cheated by this. Does it help anyone? No, Frank, Rafinha coming out and saying this, or is he justified considering everyone has admitted they were wrong?

18:03Well, for me, it's unbearable. You know, I'm fed up with every action that we see and that the players have to come out after to express, you know, what they felt and what we clearly see. I mean, it's clear. You have the replay. You have the chance to have the VAR that we didn't have in our time. so the ref can go and see. It's so important. Every game are important. Points are important. You have so much pressure every game. And sometimes you give your best and you are punished because of something that doesn't go with the game, that doesn't go with the thing you have to accept. Rafinha was right to say that, to say what he said.

18:44You know, he has to fight against too many things. What he's saying is that everyone is against Barcelona. Can't be seen. And I think if we go across all 20 teams, every single one of them in La Liga, you'll be able to show. No, no, it's not. No, I'm sorry. Sorry, I didn't understand the question. I'm not saying that. I'm saying just that in that case, Rafinha was right to say that there was a foul. Of course, it goes on your side one game. It goes to the other side the other game. So it's not against Barcelona. Real Madrid are doing the same, complaining about everything, you know, and that's everybody's game.

19:21We have the thing in France with Marseille. Marseille is complaining about everything and it's always against them. So we have teams like that. But no, it's against everybody. But those kind of mistakes should have been resolved so easily because of the technology that you have nowadays. That's what I'm saying. Sorry. Does this mentality help players or teams that are in the back-to-back run that Barcelona have? It doesn't help. I don't think. I don't see what helps anybody. I don't see how it helps anybody. You know, the last thing you need is your dressing room going around going, oh, it's not fair, it wasn't our fault.

19:58No, listen, Hansi Fleck should have said, you know what, sometimes decisions go for you and sometimes decisions go against you. And he should have said, you know what, that's not the reason we lost the game. We were poor tonight, we deserved to lose the game. Which he did say in fair after the game. Right, we move on. And I don't want to hear anybody in the papers moaning about referees and all the rest of it. So, yeah, that roughing is totally out of line there. Right. It's interesting, like, yesterday's show, Ali, like, we talked about it, but we didn't... It wasn't, like, a massive deal for us because of the way in which the game was played.

20:31Because Barcelona didn't have 100 chances or unlucky. They played badly. They deserved to lose. And we all admit, yeah, there was a foul. It should have been chalked off. But it's strange with that narrative change slightly, isn't it? Where a team deserves to lose, and therefore the decision does affect the points, but not necessarily what should have happened. Does that make sense? I understand what you're saying, Dan. It's just that Barcelona's performance yesterday did not earn a defense. Did not earn a defense team to be put together and stand up in front of a judge and actually make arguments for Barcelona.

21:05They didn't earn that right. And so if it wasn't that goal, I guess the game ends 1-1. Some people would suggest that. But if you watch the balance of the match, Had it not been that goal, it would have been another goal. Because Joan Garcia is having to make a save here and a save there and a save everywhere. And had Girona been a little bit better in front of goal, this would not have been all that close. And so the performance overall of Barcelona is what they need to focus on. And I think Rafinha, in his Instagram post, he was going in that direction. He did say to begin with, we have a lot to improve on.

21:37But you can't help yourself as a player. Because as a player, you think that everything goes against you all the time. You feel like the world is against you. And for some players, I know it may not make sense for a lot of people, but for some players, that actually is the way that they find motivation. That they find some sort of inner strength. It's easier to blame that guy and that person and that referee than actually look within and actually find responsibility within yourself individually and within yourself as a group. The truly successful teams, the truly elite teams, acknowledge the fact that, yeah, we were terrible, but it's not going to happen again.

22:23The concerning part for Barcelona is that this was a continuation of what happened against Atletico Madrid and Copa del Rey. That's the part that should trouble Barcelona fans, that there should have been a reaction, and there wasn't. We saw more of the same against Girona, and then you lose the match and you expect that somebody's going to come and say, well, it should have been a foul. Maybe it should have been a foul, but you also should have lost the game. On the balance of the match, the right team won the game. Do you want to tie a bow on it, Stevie? Take responsibility. Yeah? Oh, yes. That's all it has.

22:56Good lesson for life as well, children. Yes, yes, yes. Real Madrid and Barcelona, of course, back in action this weekend. Real Madrid have the chance to extend their lead on Barca at the top of the table. Kick-off is at 12pm for us in that game and then on Sunday, Barca against Levante, 9.45 Eastern on ESPN+.

23:19What a game it turned out to be between Monaco and PSG. Monaco were 2-0 up within the opening 18 minutes. You have since international Florian Balogun getting both of those goals. Osman Dembele would then be taken off because of an injury. The Ballon d 'Or winner then would make way for Due and Due completely took over. He was fantastic throughout this tie. He would make it 2-1 pretty much with his first touch of the game. Hakimi then would make it 2-2 just before the break, and it would be Douai once again that would find the back of the net in the second half to give PSG a 3-2 lead going in to the Paris capital.

23:52Capital, French capital. Obviously keeping an eye on this, our very own Frenchman, Frank Leboeuf. Frank, very entertaining tie. It was, it was, and very surprising beginning of the game, you know, with a very early goal from Balagoon. But it was crazy because at 2-0, Monaco had two chances to score. They did. And they were having like 14 % of position of the ball. So they were almost not touching the ball. That's crazy. But you could have felt that Paris Saint-Germain would come back and do the job and that they were more superior than Monaco. But it happened because Dembele got injured then Dewey is upset because he's not playing right now.

24:38So he went on the field, he came on the field and proved to Riz Enrique that he was right, Riz Enrique, to put him on the bench to see that reaction. So well done, Riz Enrique. Sadly, Dembele is again injured and have a calf problem. So I don't know how long it's going to take for him to come back. But well done, Desiree Dewey. He showed, especially the first goal. I mean, there was, as Ali said, a very tight angle. He was very precise and he had three shots and he scored two goals and Hakimi scored the second goal when Douai shot. So that was a perfect day for Desiree Douai and I have to say it's only a fair result for Paris Saint-Germain.

25:22Why wasn't Douai starting, Frank? What's the story there? Well, supposedly Luis Enrique wasn't very happy with the way that he was performing. maybe he was getting a little bit sloppy and well he has the choice of a king as we say you know at front Bacola has been pretty good even if he didn't score for like a year in the Champions League but he's always a danger Dembélé you know the Ballon d 'Or where do you want to put him you have to put him on the field Gvash Kelly of course he's very good and Dwey was the fourth one and wasn't proving enough to Riz Henrique that he deserved to start But today he showed the reaction as a professional player and I think Luis Enrique will be very happy with his behaviour but also with his own decision to put him on the bench to see that reaction.

26:16PSG obviously haven't been great of late losing on Friday, Frank. And I just wanted to bring up the quotes that were made from Dembele and Luis Enrique after that defeat. This is what Dembele had to say. Above all, we have to play for PSG in order to win matches. If we play as individuals on the pitch, it won't work. We won't win the titles we won. Straightforward, general kind of player speak, nothing to make a big deal of. Until someone brings up to Luis Enrique who comes out and says, the player's statements after the match are worthless, absolutely worthless. I'm not going to answer any questions from a player, any response from a player.

26:51I will never allow any player to be above the club. So it's clear I am the person responsible for the team. Frank is this about doing your talking on the pitch? No I think it's just the fact that I think Luis Enrique didn't answer Dembele's comment because Dembele wasn't putting himself above the club he was putting the club above everything and saying that the players should have played together in terms of putting the club at the top and like they did last season it's what Ousmane was saying So I think it was a misunderstanding from Luis Enrique. Even if I agree with him, all comments after a game from a player, especially criticism, are worthless because you are just going outside the field.

27:40You don't know what you're saying. You're upset because you lost, and that's what happened. And so you say something to please maybe the fans. You say, OK, we weren't good enough. That doesn't mean anything. But whatever. I think Luis Enrique really misunderstood what Ousmane Dembele was pointing. That's it. Players, math, comments after games on TV, all of them are useless, aren't they, boys? Just a reminder, the Gavin Jules podcast is available next week. I don't think they've got one this Thursday, I've been told. But you can always say... Why is that, Dan? Well, Jules is skiing, apparently.

28:14Oh, all right. Wow. Okay. I see how it works. We'll see you next time.

28:48Now test your 문제.

29:21If you wanted goals, Turkey was the place to be today. Seven in total. Juventus were 2-1 up at some stage. However, they need a miracle in the second leg in Turin as Galatasaray win the game by five goals to two. Thoroughly entertaining tie, Stephen. It's something maybe we've been wanting to see more of. I know defensively it's not perfect, but at least it's open. At least it's exciting. At least things are happening. The Champions League, for me in general, has been open and attacking. I don't know whether we're so used to watching the Premier League. And I think too many teams in the Premier League are not willing to lose the ball in order to take a chance on whipping a ball in or one-on-one or whatever it may be.

30:04And so when we come to watch the Champions League, all the teams seem to be wanting to go forward and score. They're not willing to possess it per se. They're willing to get forward and create and get goals and get opportunities. And so, right now, the Champions League is just great to sit and watch. It's entertaining. This match, specifically, was chaotic. And it was chaotic in the first half. And having been chaotic, Juventus were up 2-1. And the fatal mistake that Juventus makes in this match is that they, instead of trying to find control, instead of trying to figure out how do we manage the tempo of this game, they decided, we're going to go on the back and forth.

30:49We're going to try to enjoy the chaos. It wasn't their responsibility to carry the momentum of the game away from home, and it wasn't their responsibility to carry the pace of the game when they're already winning 2-1. So find control. Enjoy possession of the ball in the middle of the third. Unable to do that, silly turnover after silly turnover. You make a substitution. You bring out Cambiasso because he was getting killed by Yilmaz on that side. You bring in Cabal at halftime, and Cabal gets himself thrown out 20 minutes after he's come on to the match. Anything and everything that Juventus did in that second half was horrendous.

31:24And we're not even talking about the turnovers and the giveaways and the goals. They, conceptually, they got it all wrong in the second half. Instead of trying to control the match, they're trying to go on the back and forth, and Galatasaray were more than happy to do that. Doesn't it show how the culture of football in Italy has changed? An Italian team, 2-1 up, away from home, and decide to try and win it for me, or four, or five. The game's gone. Frank, to Stevie's point, is the Champions League a better entertainment than we're seeing in England at the moment? I think so. I think so. But because there are more mistakes, I would say.

32:04Nowadays, we try, our coaches are trying to avoid mistakes. And in football, without any mistakes, you don't have any goal. So that's part of the deal. But the thing is, in the Champions League, they try to create mistakes to the opponents. Where in the Premier League, they try to avoid mistakes. That's what it is. So they don't take any risk in order to not make any mistakes, in order to not concede any goal. That's the difference between what I see in the Champions League. And it's what we saw today, as Ali mentioned, a chaotic game. But you try. You go for it. And you push the opponent to make mistakes.

32:44That's what it is. That's the difference I see with the Premier League, where too many European coaches have come to teach another type of football. It was different in England. When I came, when I played, that was the spirit of going for it. creating chances, pushing the opponent to make mistakes. Now that's the other way around, I think. So a bad week, obviously, for Juventus losing against Inter as well. At the weekend we highlighted, of course, the red card that was handed out in that game. Kouloulou, of course, sent off a clear dive from Postoni. He came out and spoke about this, saying, what I felt was a contact with my arm which was emphasised when I watched it back.

33:29I'm here to take responsibility. What I regret is my subsequent behaviour. A human being has the right to make mistakes, but equally the duty to recognise them. That's why I'm here. I'm sorry I reacted like that. It's right to hold my hands up to that. Now, what he's referring to, not the dive, but celebrating getting a player sent off, which Ali, you brought up yesterday, actually, wasn't it? It was his celebration that you could say, look, diving, that's fine, you know, dark arts, but it's the way in which he celebrated afterwards. You can just see there, hugging his teammates, He's punching the air to get the player sent off.

34:03Yeah, and look, full disclosure, over the course of my career, doing this was not foreign to me. Trying to draw fouls, trying to get players in trouble, that wasn't a problem for me, nor do I think it should be a problem for any other player. And I think Stevie would agree with me, maybe. I wasn't just a flat-out diver like that. Right. I flat out. No, no, no. Flat out. I'll give you that. Okay. Right? But if indeed you're going to draw a foul, which I have no issue with, and you know you got away with it, then walk away. Don't go celebrating. Because now you're also bringing attention to your nonsense.

34:50The more you celebrate it, the more you already got enough attention by the fact that the other guy got a second yellow card and he's now off the field. it is it is not what I would have expected from Bastoni to go on and celebrate afterwards, it's not something that I would have done, and honestly once you've celebrated and this has been his behaviour my criticism is, own it own it, don't come and apologise no, isn't that nice? no, no, no you want to be the villain? he made a mistake in the moment he's realised he made a mistake That's not a mistake. That's not a mistake. A football player that does that so blatantly, he should get a kick up his backside for every single player that comes within five yards of him.

35:38That's not acceptable. For a professional football player to do that is not acceptable. And to think you can come out and give us a wee apology and think everybody's going to go, oh, that's very nice of him. How honest is he coming around and telling us that he didn't get touched? No. It don't get much lower than that. Really? on another player. No. I would prefer that he owned it. Yeah. I would prefer that, you know, look, I made a play. The player made a mistake. Referee made a call. We got a red car out of it. My team won the match. Own it. Own it. Frank? Yeah, I do remember Simeone, you know, with Beckham's red car.

36:15Did he apologize for that? No, no, no. He said, I knew what I was doing. I knew that I was the villain and I accepted it and I won't change anything. That's what it is. I'm with the guys, you know, Bastoni, I don't know, that's maybe nowadays players, you know, we have to say everything on the social networks, whatever it can be. But don't apologize. Just to accept the fact that you've been a bad person and a villain, as the guy called him, and did that and maybe helped you to win a game. We saw that wasn't a foul, like we saw with Dwayne, with Monaco, on the goal that he scored, that it wasn't a foul.

36:55players have to stop exaggerating referee have to stop not seeing it and on top of it he couldn't see on the bar because there was a second yellow card, another straight red card so it's getting even more complicated but Bastoni yet, accept it you can be a bad guy for once, that's okay you will have maybe a time to be a hero I'm glad Frank brought that up so the semi-only one, it's skullduggery as is Bastoni but one, professional players will lambast you for doing what Bastoni did, but professional players will go, you know what, that was smart that's the difference between the two things, another reason I didn't make it it's just small details small details just another reason speaking of exaggeration Jürgen Klinsmann is on the show on the next edition of ESPN FC with me and Ali and Stevie.

37:56I'm up. Good. Yeah, I think so. Thank you. Thank you, Stevie. Be sure to join us, of course, for the Champions League tour.

38:05Venetia Jr. has just posted this on Instagram. Racists are above all cowards. They need to put the shirt over their mouths to show how weak they are. But they have at their side the protection of others who, in theory, have the obligation to sanction. Nothing that happened today is new in my life or in that of my family. I received a yellow card for celebrating a goal. I still don't understand why. On the other hand, just a poorly executed protocol that was of no use. I don't like to appear in situations like this, even more so after a big win and when the headlines have to be about Real Madrid, but it's necessary.

38:45That was Vinicius Junior just now. That has been posted on Instagram. That then brings us to the end of today's show. Thank you very much for watching. Of course, more Champions League action to come tomorrow. Until then, be sure to stay tuned as Extra Time is next.

39:08Welcome in to the latest edition of Extra Time. Is that a new jacket? Frank, what are you up to? Where are you going? Nothing much. You know, I got that jacket for years, but the first time that I wear that in front of you, I guess you don't like it. No, I just... Frank? Why did Frank do that? Why does Frank do what? He went like that twice. Well, because it's double-breasted, isn't it? Is that why?

39:34I want to make sure my abs are still there. Frank and his abs. Reinsure myself. Yeah, we haven't had an Instagram pic of your abs for a while, Frank. People will be getting worried. Don't worry, they're still there. They're still preeminent, so it's okay. Okay. For as bad as Madrid have been in terms of organization and structure this year, they were very solid, barely gave Benfica a sniffs of goal. Was this some turning up for a Champions League night, or might this and their last few games indicate they have turned a corner? What do you think, Ali? I wouldn't say they have turned a corner. They're taking sort of like the wide turn.

40:14Eventually, I think there's more work to be done in order to truly turn the corner. But what we are seeing, and we talked about it in the show, is that today with the presence of a natural right back in Alexander-Arnold, that allows Valverde to come into the midfield. That gives them more structure and organization in the midfield. It allows Chua Mene to be able to cover ground as well as Camavinga. That midfield looked a whole lot better today than it has in the past. And so then he begs the question, as you start thinking and looking into the future, when Jude Bellingham comes back, what happens?

40:51You imagine that he's going to play, but what are you sacrificing in doing that? Ali, how did Real Madrid start the season when they didn't have Jude Bellingham? They started really well. Did they win ten in a row? They started very well, Dan. Uh-oh. Oh, England's World Cup hopes, crumbling. No, well, the thing is, what are you willing to sacrifice if you're Arbeloa? You watch this team's performances as of late, and they've had a few things in common. Structure, organization, more focus on defending through the midfield, more discipline in tracking back defensively, and how you go and press the ball together.

41:35that doesn't quite happen when you have three or four guys that are not giving you that kind of work or that give you that kind of work but in a disorganized manner which is sometimes what Bellingham does he'll go and chase a ball that he doesn't need to chase he gets himself out of position because he it looks like the hero played to go and make a sliding tackle when he's never going to get there and now Chiuameni is having to cover 40 yards for him and that exposes the team in transition. And so Arbeloa has decisions to make. That's why I say that it's a wide turn they're taking right now because they won't fully turn the corner until we get a full picture as to what this team is going to be when everybody's healthy.

42:13Stevie, let me ask you a question. What's more likely this season? A Spanish team or an English team to win the Champions League? Ooh. Ooh.

42:27So we've got Newcastle Spurs. I just think because of the numbers. I think because... Does that make sense, though? I don't know. I was coming at it from a numbers game. OK. If there's five Premier League teams... One of them is Spurs. Four Premier League teams. And Newcastle. And Newcastle. Yeah, Barcelona, look, as though they're in big trouble now. Wow. I think it's 50-50. You think so? I think it is. Yeah, I think anybody watching Real Madrid today, the things Ali was talking about on the show, you know, Valverde, you know, there's nothing, for some players, being able to play in different positions isn't what they want to do.

43:13you know Valverde having to play it right back with Carajal out Trent out it kind of upsets your rhythm from when you go back into your own place and it seems like it's taken Valverde quite a few games to get back to the Valverde of previously and the difference it makes we all know the downside to Trent but when he's on your team and you have control of the ball it just opens up a whole different game because he can pick passes that nobody else can from the halfway line or beyond. So I think all the other teams have been looking at Real Madrid going... So you're going 50-50. I'm going 50-50. If I pushed you, I'm going to push you.

43:59One or the other.

44:03If I was to choose a team not to play tomorrow I would probably say I don't want to play Arsenal tomorrow. OK. But it's tight. So in theory, Real Madrid could face, of course, Manchester City in the next round if they get it done at the Bernabeu. Frank, what did you want to add? Or do you want to answer my brilliant question? No, that was a brilliant question. But the thing is, I don't get carried away by a Real Madrid performance today because as soon as Bellingham is going to come back, Arbeloas is going to put him on the field with Vini and Mbappe. and the Ole Miss is going to come back, not because of Bellingham, just because the coach can't make a choice between Vinny and Bellingham.

44:43And for me, the three big stars can't play together. And we saw today how stabilized they were in the middle of the park. And Ali alluded it, or talked about it, and explained very rightly how Madrid can get close to their best if they are stabilized in the middle of the park. And as soon as Bellingham comes back, that would be the big mess. And again, not because of the personality of Bellingham, but because the three big stars don't do the job defensively. And it unbalanced the team. And it's why I don't get carried away, because I think the mess is going to come back. Like everybody, every of the coaches, Ancelotti, Alonso and Arbeloa, have not done, therefore, taking decisions.

45:32So you would say England or Spain, Frank? I say England. And as Stevie said, you know, you want to avoid Arsenal. You know, I saw Bayern Munich playing against... They're not English or Spanish, that's not my question. Of course not. They're German. Let me go to the point. Let me go to the point. I saw Bayern Munich playing against Paris Saint-Germain. I was at the Pacte des Princes. And I saw Arsenal, how they play against Bayern Munich. and I say wow that's a performance so I think Arsenal are the favorites to win the Champions League. Do you want to play my game? Voila! What a fun game it is!

46:12It is, it is. Well I think we can all agree that if it's gonna be an English team it's gonna be Arsenal. I think there is a clear drop-off between Arsenal and the rest so I won't play the numbers game that Stevie is playing. Well I couldn't I couldn't play it. I couldn't play it myself.

46:32I mean, it has to be Arsenal above Barcelona and Real Madrid. It's kind of their second and third. Well, here's the thing that I would say about Arsenal. Because of their short comments over the last few weeks or so in the Premier League, which they've allowed Manchester City back somewhere in the neighbourhood of a race, I don't want to speak for Arsenal, but it would seem like that's priority number one when in the Premier League. How much attention does that take away from you in trying to defend that first position in the Premier League? So the sooner they wrap that up, more of an opportunity they're going to get to actually be successful in the final stages of the Champions League.

47:19because they have something that not many other teams have, which is depth. So your question, right? Yes, sir. You must have been thinking about it. So where did you end up? Say? Well, you obviously thought about the question. So where did you go? I think Ali summed up nicely. I think Arsenal are the best team in Europe at the moment. And I think out of the rest, when you compare them, Barcelona and Real Madrid are probably second and third. Like City's defence you can't trust. Your boys' defence you can't trust. Newcastle aren't great this season. Spurs are Spurs. So I think in that sense, your 50-50 is a good point.

47:51But it's very interesting, isn't it? It's a good question, Dan. Well done, Daniel. Thank you very much. 13 years. Yes, there we go. Hashtag FC Extra Time. OK, back to others' questions. What about Chelsea? You didn't mention Chelsea, Dan. Yeah, there's a reason. Chelsea, they are champion of the world.

48:13Stevie, as a former coach, Is it easier to analyse games from pitch side or an elevated level like Sir Alex Ferguson's dugout or in the stands? I much prefer to be down by the pitch. But can you see? I can see more. I think I can see more. I can feel what's going on more. I can actually see who's doing what, how they're doing it, why they're not doing what they should be doing. I think I can see it way better being at that level than sitting in the stand. Absolutely. As a reporter, it's the complete opposite. But then, obviously, you've played the game at that level for so much time. All I can see is just bodies everywhere.

48:52Yeah. You can see... How you boys can pick a pass, I have no idea. You can see what's going through players' heads. Once you get to know all your players inside and out, you can see what's going through their head as they're doing stuff. So why would others prefer to sit in the stand? I don't really know. it's just that I prefer that so that's why I don't understand why they would rather set up the top. Stevie would you agree with me that it's two different way of thinking the game? As you said when you are close to the touchline you feel it, you feel the game, you feel the players, you see them.

49:31When you are on top you see the tactic, you see more the mistakes tactically of the work that everybody does but when you're on the touchline you can individualize all problems mistakes that that you do that you can see but here's the thing nowadays you can do both nowadays you can be in the touch line and have the feeling that Stevie has and I'm gonna say you can say you can watch on the screen there's a there's guys upstairs that have a full video. I'm worried about him and technology. Well, no, he wouldn't be running it. Somebody would just press play for him. Hey, I'm worried. But in American football, you have the coach on the touchline and you have the other coaches from every line in the stand, you know, watching and judging the tactics.

50:28So that's maybe something in soccer we have to do. What do players think when they join a club and not long after the manager who wanted them is gone? Have any of you been in that situation? I'm thinking, what, Connor Gallagher at the moment? Maybe for Spurs is an example.

50:48Well, I don't know whether this answers the question. When I left Liverpool to go to Notch County under one manager, a guy called Howard Kendall, right? so I went there to play and be a coach and his assistant and the whole thing this was in the player manager day and that's the reason I went there that's the reason I left the Premier League to go to a team who were going to get relegated from what's now the Championship that's why I went there and four weeks after I got there he got the sack and four months later Four months later, I was just a player because somebody else came in and brought their own coaches and everything else in.

51:34I ended up going from the Premier League and basically was a player in the third division. League one. Yeah. 12. Stevie, think if you made it there, you may not have been here. Thank goodness I didn't. Exactly. It all works out for a reason. Now we've talked about the English sides, the Spanish sides. Any chance that PSG can repeat? Frank?

51:59It's possible, yes, I believe it's possible because I don't see any other team but I was talking before maybe Arsenal or Bayern Munich after watching Bayern Munich but Paris Saint-Germain they have all the tools to win it again but we all know how difficult it is and only Real Madrid has achieved that record but they are strong but they're quite fragile something is missing comparing to last season maybe humility is why maybe today or yesterday Luis Enrique was a little bit upset against Ruzman Nebel because he wants to everybody to keep their feet on the ground but something is has changed but the talent is there and I'm pretty sure they can do something special again but But, well, I want to give them like, yeah, 60 % of doing it again.

52:56Wow. Okay. But 40 % of failing. So 60 % for them to win it. Yeah. So you would take them over any other team? Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Because I think that if they find just the little thing, because today, again, I saw how strong and stronger they were compared to Monaco. That was a different league. It was just sometimes sleeping but yes, yes I want to believe that they're better than Arsenal, they're better than Real Madrid and Barcelona for me and I want to see how they can handle against Bayern Munich like they didn't do the last time but for me it's possible for them to do it again. 60 % PSG, take us through the rest Frank?

53:47Oh my god, it's too late for that. I know, I know, it's too late. Bruce Enrique would suggest that Frank's opinion is... Oh wow, worthless. There we go. Join the club. Frank would just show him his abs. Look at these little beauties. By the way, who could PSG have, Chelsea or Barcelona in the next round. Wow. Exciting, wouldn't it? There you are, world champions, Chelsea. If Stevie could go back in time. Oh boy. Where are we going here? Here we go. Michael Jeff Rocks. We'll call him Michael Jeff Rocks then. We could, yes. Would he still sell Luis Diaz? Well, no. No. There we are. Yeah, but that's easy enough.

54:40At the time, that was absolutely the right thing to do. Okay. You know, 70 million for a guy... Well, think about it, you're bringing in Verts, you're bringing in Esak. Yes. You know, you've got Gakpo who was in great form last year. There's not enough room for them all, but you're getting 70 million for a guy who's, what is he, 29, 30? so it made complete sense at the time but with hindsight looking at the mess it is right now then obviously you would say you would rather he was there OK that is it that brings us to the end of today's show more Champions League champ to come more fascinating questions from me Jürgen Klinsmann will be here alongside Stevie and Ali be sure to join us
