In short
ESPN FC debate on World Cup group-stage results—Spain’s 1-0 win over Uruguay but poor performances, Cape Verde advancing to face Argentina, France’s 4-1 rout of Norway, and whether Mauricio Pochettino was right to heavily rotate the US vs Turkey.
Guests (backgrounds)
Dan Thomas (host, ESPN FC). Craig Burley (former professional footballer, pundit). Don Hutchinson (ESPN FC analyst). Ali Moreno (ESPN FC analyst). Frank Leboeuf (former France international, pundit; joins for France/Norway segment).
Key claims
- Spain advanced but looked “slow/pedestrian,” limited offensively, and not like the Euros team; midfield control and team speed were lacking.
- Uruguay were physically aggressive and tactically disjointed; their lack of goals eliminated them.
- Cape Verde’s fearless approach is a standout story; upsetting Argentina is framed as unlikely but romantic.
- France look “elite” in attack; Dembele’s hat-trick shows depth and confidence.
- Pochettino’s US rotation vs Turkey was justified because the match was meaningless and knockout preparation mattered.
Notable examples
- Spain’s dependence on Nico Williams and Dani Olmo’s impact as a substitute.
- Uruguay’s rough play (yellow cards/red card) and early removal of Valverde.
- France: Dembele hat-trick vs Norway; Mbappe hitting the crossbar; discussion of defensive “chinks” and Theo/left-side concerns.
- US: criticism over rotation and yellow-card risk; Pulisic introduced late; argument that it protected key players for the round of 32.

0:35Welcome in to the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Dan Thomas, joined by Craig Burley. Don Hutchinson is here, Ali Moreno as well. Later on in the show, we'll be discussing whether or not Pochettino was right to completely change his side in that defeat against Turkey. Plus, lots of love for France and Dembele. Not so much love for Spain. They would advance, they would beat Uruguay by one goal to nil in the game that has just finished. But boy, this was hard work. After seeing France, one of the favourites, put on such a great show earlier in the day. Now, this was anything but from Spain. Uruguay, though, put up a fight quite literally.
1:08However, a 1-0 defeat means that they go home early. They are eliminated. Saudi Arabia go home with them from the group. Cape Verde are the second-place side who advance. We'll talk about them and their matchup with Argentina in a moment. But overall, Ali, you look at this Spain side, and we expected quite a lot from them, didn't we? Did we expect too much? Did we just take the win today? We expected more than today. we expected more than what we saw against Cape Verde. And then the match against Saudi Arabia, in which they win 4-0, you kind of go, well, maybe. Maybe this is the real version of Spain.
1:46But we needed to have a follow-up performance against Uruguay, which would be tougher opposition, allegedly anyways. Physically, tougher opposition. However, you don't see from Spain, regardless of what you may think the expectations are in this group, a team that stands out as a group of players that could potentially win this competition. I didn't see anything from Spain today that filled me up with any sort of confidence and hope that indeed this is a group of players that are going to be able to advance all the way to the finals and win the World Cup. Offensively, they seem to be very limited.
2:21They're dependent upon La Minna Malda. That's not a surprise, but they need Nico Williams on the other side of the field so that the attack becomes far more balanced. the midfield, which is supposed to be an area of strength for Spain, it's been underwhelming. And it's been underwhelming from players like Rodri, and I would even go as far as to say underwhelming from Pedri as well. I don't know if it's tired legs, but Spain are not controlling the possession with intent to go forward nearly as much as they would want to and as much as what we saw in the Euros. This team is far from what we saw in the Euros, and therefore far from being one of the top favorites to win this competition based upon performance, not based on what we had as expectations coming into the tournament, based on what we have seen.
3:03They're nowhere near France right now. Didn't you say in a show earlier today that Spain have been brilliant? I believe I said they haven't lit up the tournament and you shouted at me saying, didn't they do well against Saudi Arabia? That was before this game. They've been disappointing. It was like the old Spain in a way. It was exactly that, yeah. It was a bit like the old Spain where it was very slow, very pedestrian paced. and I think if you look at the two sides from Europe that were considered the favourites, France and Spain, only one of those players would get a sniff of the front four would get a sniff of getting into the French team and that's Luminiumal.
3:38And you could even put up an argument there with Michael Alissi and the way he's playing and Dembele and so forth, Desiree Dewey. So they're really lacking in that and quite frankly I didn't understand the change from the Saudi game with Danny Olmo being out and Mikel Moreno. But then also Pedro, I don't know if Pedro Poro was injured, but Poro played in the last game. It just all felt a bit, felt a bit unnecessary and it was very disjointed. And I think they were a little lucky in a sense that this is a, this is a very poor Uruguay side, isn't it? Yeah. You know, they huffed and puffed, but didn't have a lot about them.
4:12But yeah, Spain thus far, they look a little bit of a shadow or a lot of a shadow of the side that was very successful in the Euros. Wide on. Too slow. The passing was too slow. It was too pedestrian. I thought they looked a better side when Dani Olmo came on. I think he has to be a starter. I think what they'll take from that game is obviously winning, going through and having no injuries. Because Uruguay were a disgrace. I thought from 20 minutes into the game, all they had was kick lumps out of Spain. So when you're playing that type of opposition, it's harder to grind. You're trying to keep the ball away from them.
4:48You're attacking tackles and you're getting the opposition yellow cards and a red card at the end. I think they'll look at the bigger picture and think, well, a win's a win, but they definitely have to improve. And they lack overall team speed of the movement of the ball, as Don just mentioned, but also team speed in general. I look at a group of players that seem to be moving sort of like slow, slower, slowest, and it's all very contagious. The movement of the ball is slow, but then there is no real change of pace in terms of sprinting from Spain, sprinting into open spaces, sprinting in behind, sprinting to get ahead of the ball so that you can split lines of defending.
5:27If indeed you knew that Uruguay were going to come to kick you, as Uruguay did, and we expected that to be the case, you know you had to move the ball quicker and you had to sprint into spaces so that you could be found in behind Uruguay. They kept everything in front of Uruguay, and so they were there to be kicked. And Uruguay was more than happy to go and do that because they knew that was the only way that they were going to win this game. look I've said it many times I've picked Spain to win this this tournament and with every game that goes by I am less and less likely to hang on to that thought because it's foolish to watch this team play on the same day that we saw France and go uh yeah this team has a chance against that team not based on what we have seen and honestly the lack of team speed the lack of movement the lack of intent to go forward.
6:15It's a lot of sideways and back. It's frustrating to watch. And I love what the guys have said. It's going back to 2022, to the World Cup in 2022. It seemed like they were playing Morocco all over again. And the outcome of that game was predictable because of how slow Spain was. Luis de la Fuente has addressed this. That's why they were European champions. But we're going back in time here with Spain. and until you get Nico Williams on the field, which I mentioned before, you don't have overall team speed. I mean, Jamal's still not up to his best. He was gassed after 75 minutes. He had to be taken off the field.
6:51So there are a lot of questions to be asked about Spain and not a whole lot of answers. And it was a gift of a goal. Moussi ever got taken off at halftime. And without that, you know, we could be sat here talking about a nil-nil draw. Yeah. Felt like it. Yeah, it was a hard one. Yeah, I mean, it was one of those games where you were even talking about Luis Suarez. That's how bad it all was. Could he have made a difference? Would someone have done anything? Yeah, I mean, it's been... And he was smart. De La Fuentes, as I said, he was smarting after match day one for the criticism we got. And then he put a little bit of it to bed with the Saudi Arabia game, but Saudi Arabia, not a very good side.
7:32That was done after 45 minutes. I would imagine, from the Spanish press point of view, there's going to be, even though they won and they're through and they've won the group I imagine there's going to be a lot more questions to him about how they're going to go from A to B to C and maybe even to D if they're going to win this thing, how they're going to get their plane in the manner in which they are, which doesn't look likely at this point. As it stands it's Austria in the next round and in theory if you advance there you'll take on Portugal Yeah, I mean off the back of that, when you look at that that's the likelihood I would imagine Portugal beat Ghana and Spain beat Austria.
8:08I think the DNA when I watched Spain win the Euros, apart from having brilliant midfield players that can control the tempo, it was the wide players and Williams and Jamal. They can't be too dependent on Jamal. You can't be just saying, right, we're going to get our star player at the ball all of the time because if you're Austria or you're Portugal, Ghana, whoever they might face, you can try and get players on that side to stop Jamal. So Williams has to come in. And if he's fit enough to come in, when they won the Euros playing with those two out wide, they just looked unstoppable. How bad are Uruguay if they can't get out of this group?
8:43There's obviously something going on at Uruguay beyond what we're seeing on the field. You need a goal. You need something. And you take out Fede Valverde very early on in the second half. and as Fede del Verde was coming off the field, team captain for Uruguay, by the way, he doesn't even take a look at Marcelo Bielsa. Bielsa doesn't look at him. You know there is a disconnect here somewhere. But more importantly, there is a lack of overall talent. At Uruguay, there is. You look at that attacking core group of players and where are the goals going to come from? And it just, you were joking about Luis Suarez, but it's a question that has come up because you kind of go, So, well, Darwin Nunez seemingly hasn't scored a goal in a thousand years.
9:30And it didn't look like he was going to score a goal today. Uruguay have been really disappointing. Really, really disappointing. And the expectations, to your point about this group, it's Spain, okay, fine. But Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, with all due respect, it's Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde. and Uruguay with all their history and history of success in this tournament you would have thought absolutely they would have been playing for first in the group against Spain in the last group stage match. Instead they were barely hanging on. There's nothing about this Uruguayan team that was impressive or inspiring.
10:07In fact all of it was frustrating and at times embarrassing and how they ended up the match today was even more embarrassing. If you had Kate Verde coming out sorry. If you had Kate Verde coming out second in this group. Congratulations. A 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia. Season through to the knockout stages to set up Argentina, in theory, as their next opponent. Even you, Craig, surely. Even you. What do you mean, me? I've got to love this. Come on. The romance. The romance of the game. Come on, Craig Ferdi against Argentina. Give me a chance to talk. Come on. I came into the studio during cartwheels.
10:43That's something I would like to see. Give them the flowers. Yeah, see. You're quick to judge me. Sometimes I just take a different direction and I feel a bit of love. However, on this occasion... No, no. Their first World Cup, I believe, there's only eight teams have won the World Cup and they've played two of them, albeit a poor Uruguay side. They've drawn with Spain. All right, got them at a good time and we've talked about Spain's problems. And they've drawn with Uruguay and I believe it was a drawing. Yeah, drawing this on 0-0 was enough. Actually, they could have won it there, but should have won at the end of the game, there are a few chances.
11:20So they go through, tells you all you need to know about this group, second place, three points. But that's just a great story. And again, it goes back to the, when we were talking about Uruguay there and Scotland before, how they've offered very little. Some of these teams like Cape Verde, the DR Congo, certainly in the first game. Haiti. Haiti. They've either gone through or they've gone out, but they've gone for it and you have to admire that they haven't come and we talk about Cape Verde here they haven't come to this World Cup and been fearful they've came and thought do you know what if we get spanked we get spanked but we're going to give it a go and they're out of the group and it's a great story but it won't go much further I wouldn't imagine no Argentina now that would be one of the biggest upsets surely in the history of the World Cup if Cape Verde were to knock out Argentina I don't think so it's good though Don isn't it?
12:16I think it's amazing. I think off the back of what the lads are saying. Come on, a bit more. It's embarrassing for Scotland when Cape Verde go through. But you see the fans dancing in that there. Everything's back to Scotland. Scotland, everyone. You see the fans dancing there and that's what it is. But our fans were dancing. That's the only thing they were doing. Our team don't reflect the fans. Cape Verde fans, right? They're representing their fans. You can see why they love them because it can latch on to them because they have a go. You know why Scotland fans drink as much, don't you? You've got to watch that.
12:46Use the pain. You need to be absent. We'll talk about Scotland a little later on in the show. Oh, yes. And that means it's time to let the snacking begin. This summer, Lays is inviting everyone to jump on the bandwagon.
14:04Oh, you don't know the rules. You don't know any of the players. Doesn't matter. The bandwagon is for everyone. So grab a bag of Leys, gather friends and keep the party going. Leys' official sponsor of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
14:20We alluded to it, France were brilliant in their 4-1 victory against Norway. Quite a few changes for the Norwegian side, but still France went pretty much full strength. And boy, did they put on a show in the first half. Dembele with a hat-trick, Dwey Leiton as France beat Norway by four goals to one. Frank Leboeuf is with us. Frank, France are good. Seems to be very good, you know. And yeah, they... Well, I was very... At first, I was very surprised that DJ Deschamps, Auguste Stéphane, his assistant, decided to put the first team, except some players like Lacroix, instead of Saliba, and maybe Durabiau and Fauconnet.
15:03But otherwise, the forward lines were the best. and I thought DJ Chant will rest like Norway did with Alain, Odegaard and Soloth. But he decided to put the first 11 and it worked. It worked very well. At the first second we saw Mbappe hitting the crossbar. And then friends showed their strengths and especially Usman Dembele. I'm very happy for him. He's called a fantastic hat trick. He showed that he hasn't got a problem. Yeah, he's only prime. He doesn't know which foot is the best for him, which is unbelievable. But the guy is so good. He had a fourth chance to score. But I think in his mind, he said, well, maybe three is enough.
15:46I'm going to try to give an assist for the fourth. But he missed the pass, and his friends didn't work. But really, amazing performance. Yes, the rotation from Norway saves a lot. Maybe the guy is going to talk about it and see if it had an effect on the result. But overall, France wanted to stay on the East Coast. And that was the point. That's what's going to happen. Because they're going to play in New York the next game. Dembele sensational in that first half. Luis Enrique has done a great job with him, hasn't he? That's transferred into the national team. He's confidence. This player that was at Dortmund in Barcelona and who was very inconsistent and who had his disciplinary issues in terms of being late for training and the attitude.
16:30And he goes back to France. and you think, right, what version is going to go back to France? Somebody that's just sort of had enough and he wants to go home to his home country and take it easy? Or is it a guy who goes back to his home country, gets in with a manager who gets in his head that he needs to work hard and everything else will come? And he's been sensational, obviously Ballon d 'Or winner, but what he's done in terms of consistency of performance for club and country has been something that Dortmund, but certainly Barcelona wanted to see, but never really did. But PSG and France are now seeing that.
17:06And you could argue that he is as important as Kylian Mbappe. That attack that France have, to have Dembele in your arsenal, to have Mbappe, we saw what Elise did again today. This team is something else. Well, and that's the scary part about France, that we're talking about Ousmane Dembele, the current Ballon d 'Or winner, and he may not be their best player. We're talking about Kylian Mbappe, who may end up winning the golden boot in this tournament. And he may not be currently their best player. Michael Ulisse seems to be their best player right now. And so when you think about France and you think about what they're able to do and the talent that they have in the attack, it's elite.
17:49We throw this word of elite out and world class to describe certain players. No, no, this guy, really, they are world class, and really, they're elite. And let's just say that they're having enough night. Let's just for argument say that, you know, Dembele is not quite having it today. He's not quite playing at the level that we expect him. All right, well, in comes Barcola, or here is Dwayne, or here is this guy, or here is that guy. They have too much in the attack. Only concern would be through the midfield. Only concern would be in the back line. But that's nitpicking because this team and the front end is better than anybody else.
18:22What's it like, Don, playing against a player with both feet? Most people look at both feet. No, that's very true. I have both feet. I have both feet, to be fair. Unfortunately, neither of them are able to kick a ball. Well, one of them you've just put in your mouth. How do you stop them? How do you stop them? Because they're unpredictable. Right. Normally, when a guy's left footed, you can show him on the outside and stick him on his right foot. But, you know, it's nigh impossible off the back of the guy's point there. It's how do you beat this team? Because if you go at them, they've got unbelievable speed on the counter with Douay and Barcola come off the bench.
18:53And that's the beauty of this team, Mbappe. That's the beauty of this team. At any given time, the coach could have rested three or four tonight and Cherki plays. Barcola plays. You know, Kone play tonight. But you look at them and you go, you just don't see any weaknesses. Defensively strong, maybe there might be a tiny bit of a chink if they... Well, they did concede a goal against Norway's second string and a penalty as well. So that's definitely something I would consider. Maybe, but they could have won the game by five or six. Because me and Ali were watching, with Warhol in the first half and the chances that they had, they were trying to take the mickey with some of the finishers early on.
19:26Kone tried a little stud roll. Dwayne tried a little chip over the goalkeeper. That was never, ever on. So when they're at it and when they're playing with confidence and the way they're playing at the minute, you think they just look unbeatable. Ian Robin was a player, for those that remember, it's not that long ago, that predominantly came in on the right side on his left foot. It was difficult to defend against. I don't know how he did it as often as he did, as successful as he did, but he predominantly came inside. It was the odd time he would go down the outside. But if you look at every one of those front three, stroke four, they can all go inside on the left or the right or down the outside.
20:00Every one of them. Dewey, Alise, Dembélé, Mbappe. There's not a one-dimensional way of defending them. And Don mentioned Barclay and Ryan Cherky. Ryan Cherky, and Barclay's a brilliant player as well, more of a wide player. but Lion Cherky did some, not always consistent, but did some magical things at Man City last season. And he must be sitting there thinking, I'm actually really not that very good. I don't know, Cherky seems to quite like himself. I know he's very confident in himself, but he is, what, probably fifth choice? Yeah. Maybe fifth, sixth choice? Lise makes the game look easy, doesn't he?
20:36Lise, when you watch him play. When you watch him play, the subtle touches that he's got and the skill that he's got and how he makes the game look easy by finding positions but elegant on the ball at the same time. The lads behind him, in front of him, wide, they can all get their goals, but he stands out because he's silky and he's smooth. He glades. Yeah, he does. Frank, just a word on Demp. I didn't realise how poor his record was with France when it came to goal scoring until I saw the stat, which I've completely forgotten. But it was a very good... Watch out, Demp. There's the two feet. I know he's got two feet.
21:09That's important. But he hasn't shone for France as he has, as Craig said, for PSG in that Ballon d 'Or year. Yeah, it's true. I think he scored overall 11 goals for France with the hat-trick tonight. Today, sorry. But it's true that he couldn't find his positioning. And everybody said, well, he should be on the number 10. He should play on the right side. But now you have Olysees. But he should play a striker. But you have Mbappe. So you have to put the Ballon d 'Or where you have an empty space, which is incredible. And it says a lot about that for one night. But it's true that I've found, you know, for like a year that he had a complex of inferiority towards Kylian Mbappe.
21:46We couldn't see him. And as soon as he scored the last game, I found something changing in his mindset and that he was ready to step up and to be one of the leaders because you have lots of leaders in that team. And he showed it today that he's freed from that complex of inferiority, that it doesn't matter anymore for him, which is another threat for the opener. But, yeah, I mean, the guy is amazing. He stepped up since Barcelona and Craig alluded it. Coming to Paris Saint-Germain, working with Luis Enrique, becoming the Dembélé that we know now, but even becoming the leader that I never expected from him.
22:28He was an artist. He was a fantastic player. But the consistency that he showed and the power that he has and saying the word that he said, that if I'm not running back, if I don't get back into position, the coach won't put me. It says a lot about what he wants to achieve and how he thinks the collective is important. Great, great player. His game now has effectiveness and efficiency, which he did not have at Borussia Dortmund and certainly did not have at Barcelona. The talent was always there for Osmán de Dembele, but he was the almost guy. The guy that would cut to the inside and he's about to shoot and you think that he's going to put a top corner and no, it goes just wide.
23:07Oh, he was that guy. And he has now become the guy who scores a hat-trick in a World Cup. And from the graphic that we just saw, a guy who's very consistent in putting the ball in the back of the net in the same spot. I drew that myself. Did you like it? Very nicely done. Very necessary. Yes, absolutely. You were doing that while forgetting your stats. What stats? Exactly. Well, he's got to take the next step now. And I hear you say, what's the next step? Well, he's won the Champions League. He's won the Ballon d 'Or. He's won the League On. He's won the Ballon d 'Or. He scored the hat-trick in a World Cup, but it's at the knockout stages against a team who've mailed it in with the team selection because they know they're not going to win the World Cup Norway, but they want to go as far as they can, so they chose to rest players.
23:52But his next step is, when France get to the quarters and the semis and maybe beyond to the final, to take that kind of performance from the group stages and from what he does for PSG and take it into a World Cup semi-final or a World Cup final and produce it then. That's the next step for him. that's going to put him on another pedestal. He's already quite a way up that ladder, but that's going to put him... If he can deliver that, then that's going to put him right up there amongst the greats of French football who have done it at that time, at that level, at that most important point of the competition when you're playing elite-level teams.
24:30And he can do it. There's not a question he can do it. It's just whether he will or not. And we saw it against Senegal. We saw it today, Frank. A little bit of vulnerability at the back.

24:41Well, Mignon, because I know Craig, you know, criticized Mignon the first game, saying that he wasn't good. And I think Mignon proved today that he was very important stopping a penalty. He had a couple of saves as well. So he secured the defense. But there were some changes. Even Konati came for the last 15 minutes. I think we know that the pair at the back is Upamecano with Saliba. Saliba didn't play today. So I'm not that worried. I found Chiamini very good, helping the defense as well. I'm always concerned about the two flanks with the two left, the left back and the right back for me. Koundé is not at his best question mark about the Hernandez brothers.
25:25I'd rather go with Dean. Still have some question mark about that. But overall, they work together. It's what I like. They like to compensate. They like to work hard. Chiamini, Rabiot, they help the defense. And I saw Kylian Mbappe running back, tracking back today, getting the ball back. So everything is perfect. So far, expect the heat wave that we have in Paris and also France. Have I got a twin brother? I don't know. Did you have a go? You have a go at most people. I know there's been a lot of games, but I don't remember having a go at the French goalkeeper. Anyway, I'm over it. What did you make of Norway fielding the second string?
26:05Now, remember going into this, Norway could have still won the group if they beat France. They named their second string side without likes of Haaland or Odegaard. In theory, to get an easier bracket from what it could have been at the top. They want to avoid Germany, in theory, in the round of 16. Do you have a problem with that? Who wants to avoid Germany? Norway. Do they? I mean, they have not. I don't think they've done it to avoid the bracket. I think they've done it for harmony. I don't think there's any right or wrong. Same as when you have the chat with America. When you've qualified, you've earned the right to make as many changes as you've got.
26:37America hadn't topped the table. America had topped the table. Norway hadn't. Yeah, but when you've got a 26-man squad, and this is the debate, it's do you want momentum, do you want to try and beat France and make a bit of a statement, or with a 26-man squad, do you want to bring harmony into that? Because I can't imagine being away for five weeks and not getting a minute and not getting a game. That wouldn't make you feel good. It's not the club World Cup. No, but it wouldn't make you feel good. Remember that crap? It's not that. It's a World Cup. You definitely had to go at that. It's not about...
27:04Of course it is. No, it's not. Of course it is. It's not. So you're away for five weeks and you're on the bench and we're all playing. You're gasping for a minute and you can't get on. The right thing to do... That's a World Cup. But the right thing to do, maybe, when you've qualified, is to give other players a chance to play and you rest Haaland and you rest Erdogan for the next game. I don't think the fact that certain players who probably know they're not going to play when it gets to the crunch games, when they don't get a game, they're going to be upset because the mindset going in for those players would probably be a bit like the Scotland squad I played in the 98, a lot of the lads knew that they were going to be fringe players and they have to accept that.
27:39Now, it's a bit of a defeatist attitude, isn't it, really, from a country who are actually strong at the moment in Norway and who won their group. I think they won every, and the qualification that is, they won every game, I believe, 24 points out of eight games. I think I'm right. They've got Erlen Haaland, they've got Odegaard, they've got other very good players. It's a little bit of a defeatist. The flip side of that though, Craig... Oh my goodness, someone had told me they wanted to avoid Germany. They're going to have Brazil in the round of 16. The flip side of that argument... If Harman plays today, Craig, and gets injured, everyone's on ballistic.
28:11Well, you're having a... One second, Don, let me just shout across the room that he's having a shock. He's having a mare. Somebody said they wanted to avoid Germany in the round of 16. I've just seen this. Who told you? You have to... Oh my Lord. See those both feet you had at the start of the show? That's unbelievable. I've told you before be careful who you listen to because a lot of people are talking on off the back of that though Craig it's a defeatist attitude in the sense that you had a chance to win your group and you basically said we in a one-off game we cannot beat France what if Haaland plays today and gets injured I know that's the dilemma what if Haaland plays today and gets injured but that's a scenario where you can and we'll get to the US and that debacle of half the people following them this is one second Frank, the injury thing goes out the window when you have a chance to top your group and beat France.
29:05I kind of understand their mentality is we're not going to win the World Cup, so we want to get as far as we can. So we keep people fresh and maybe one or two happy, as Don says. But it's factually correct to say it is a bit of a defeatist attitude when you had an opportunity to top the group, the group was still alive, and you made as many changes as you did. Two things about this. If I'm a player, if I'm Erling Haaland, and months ago you had the World Cup draw, and you could picture how perfect it would be that you win your first two games and you define and decide who the first in the group is going to be against France, that would have been the game that I would have circled.
29:42That would have been the game that would have been the big-time matchup in this group. And the game's set up for it, and the manager for Norway decided to go against it. And to that, I would say, this is not a very Viking attitude, is it? No, this is rowing away. Yes. Yeah. Well, everyone's going The manager is going Everybody gets everybody gets a row. This is this is Don's point everybody gets a little bit of candy This is not this is not orange slices and juice boxes. There are guys are gonna play There are guys that are not gonna play There are guys that are going to play and guys that are not going to play.
30:22And if there's an opportunity for you to finish first in the group, why would you take that away from yourself? From yourself? Honestly, you're conceding from before the match. When you're having the team talk, you're already conceding to France. And you're saying, yeah, we're going to put our alternative team on. You're thinking outside the box because you're resting your best players. I know it's a defeatist attitude and you're giving up the game. I'll think inside the box and roll forward. You ain't, mate. You ain't. Frank, you get the deciding vote on this. Well, you don't because Don's wrong, but go on.
30:54Thank you. Many things to say, Don. Don, if Mbappé would play, or Dembele would play, or Douai would play, would have got an injured, what would you have thought about the French coach? That's the same question that you had for Haaland. That's a thing that you can think about. But I remember in 1998, we won the two first game, and I think Denmark won the two first games. So we rested players and I was allowed, like many others were on the bench, to play. And that was a bet. But I would have thought, you know, France will rest some players because I would have thought that France will think that they're going to go far.
31:31I thought the big rotation that Norway did was a little bit too much for me. But because there is another question, they're going to be in Dallas. So it's going to be hard also to settle down in Dallas with a hit. Don't forget they're Norwegian. They're not people from south of Europe. So it's going to be tricky for them. I hope it's a good bet. It's a good choice that they made. But I would have tried to play the best team, especially if you knew that France will put its best team. On the point on Dallas, it's an indoor stadium. Oh, okay. Everyone's researching. I'm just saying. I've got a question for you.
32:13how far into the show before you get something correct? I didn't say anything about Dallas. That wasn't me. That was French. That was all French. They chucked him right under the bus. That's me. That is chucking him under the bus there. Let's have a look at France's bracket, shall we? And what they have to get through, or who they have to get through to make it deep in the tournament. They'll have Paraguay then in the round of... This is in theory at the moment. No, sorry, they have Sweden. Sweden. And then they'll have Germany in the round of 16. And then quarterfinals... They're going to beat Sweden, aren't they?
32:44That's a nice draw, isn't it? South Africa, Canada, Netherlands, Morocco. Goodness. And that's where Norway would have been? Yes, yes. There's my point. It was a Scandinavian game, an old Scandinavian tie against Sweden, who were bottom of the group in qualification, got into the World Cup. As you know, this grates on me. They got into the World Cup through another one of Gianni Infantino's backdoor, trapdoor, parachutes called the Nations League. Shouldn't even be here. And that's who Norway could have... That's the argument, that you could not only potentially upset France, you could have bolstered your confidence by beating the favourites for the World Cup.
33:19And then you've got an easier draw, because Germany as well, they're no great shakes. That's a nice time for France. But that's a really nice draw, potentially, for France. Did you have France doing it all done at the start? Yeah. I just don't see how you beat them. I mean, Frank's probably alluded to maybe their weakness with Theo Hernandez, who's playing in Saudi, and Luca Dean. So left side maybe, or Koundé at right back might be a weakness. But you watch the rest of them play. Yeah. And you just think, right, if we sit in and go defensive, they've got too much quality when they've got on the ball.
33:48If you go up front and they hit you on the counter, they've got loads of speed to do it. So it's going to take some team to beat them. 35:48Guys who had now the chance to step it up, well, I would say not every one of them stepped it up. If you have players in the starting 11 that play a certain manner because of the characteristics of each player, and you ask them these things in a certain setup, Don't set the second team in the same setup and ask them to do the same thing if they're not the same players. Don't ask a player like Timothy Weah to play on the left-hand side in that Christian Pulisic role and try to operate like Christian Pulisic. If you lose a game in a World Cup, then in group stage. So because now you advance and from now on it's not allowed anymore.
36:24Now after that match, after that defeat, the vibe in the press conference was quite negative. Pochettino wasn't happy with that. He said, the mood is like we're going home tonight and Turkey's staying. I need to remind you and everyone that we won the group. Sorry, guys, we won. Making history is winning the World Cup. It's not winning three matches only within the World Cup. I don't really understand. It's a little bit, if you will, you're thinking a little too small. You're telling me you could make history. What does it mean to win three matches if you lose the next one? Pochettino rang in the changes for this final game.
36:54A number of players on a yellow card. Pulisic was only introduced in the second half. Balogun didn't feature at all. US lose this game. I didn't even watch this game because Turkey were out and the US had qualified. Yes. And I flicked on social media briefly. Don't do that. I flicked on briefly and all these people were going, why are the US not doing this? And I'm thinking, who are these people? And our colleagues, some of our colleagues, no, he wasn't the only one. and some of our colleagues there talking about the game, as if it was the biggest game on the planet. It was meaningless. No wonder Mauricio Pochettino, he probably went back to his hotel room and was headbutting the window thinking, I've got to deal with these people.
37:37What if he played his strongest team and Pulisic got injured and Adams got injured and McKennie got injured or Baligan or any of them, they would have chewed him up and spat him out. It was needless and pointless and senseless to do anything else other than what Mauricio Pochettino did. Because the last 32 now is a winnable game. You want your best players. I want Balogun Sharp, I want Adam Sharp, I want Pulisic Fit. And then you move on from there to the 16. It's potentially winnable. You're looking at quarterfinals. And people are getting their knickers in a twist over a game that means nothing.
38:13Pochettino must go back and think, this is what I'm dealing with. What was the point of staying here? I'm dealing with this. I've given them two great performances. I've got this campaign off to an absolute flyer with a brilliant game against Paraguay. Most of the country's up and going, this is great, this is great. And all of a sudden, the Debbie Downers are here because they made a few changes in a game that means nothing. Give your freaking head a wobble, will you? Seriously. Look, the United States were in a position last night that most teams in this competition would have wanted to have been.
38:48Yeah, stream, yeah. Look. Exactly. We've played two games. We've won two games. We've advanced. We've secured first place. And we can actually give a rest. Not like the Norway rest. Not like the French rest when it hadn't been decided yet. No, no. In this case, he had that choice and he had that right. And in fact, I think it was the only choice to make. What, are you going to play players that are on yellow card and potentially they're going to be in jeopardy of missing out games? Are you going to start Christian Pulisic when you don't know really what his status is? Actually, I will turn this around and say it's best case scenario for Mauricio Pochettino because he's able to go back to his players now and say, listen, we did great in the group stage.
39:36Yes, we did. But if we don't pay attention to details, things like this can happen. And I'm glad they happen now because if they happen next week, we're out. We're gone. And so you can use this as a coaching opportunity for Mauricio Pochettino. And you have a built-in excuse. You have a built-in excuse. I'm not even playing my best team. And so I really do think that people are drowning in a glass of water. And it's unnecessary for whatever criticism, and we've been critical of Mauricio Pochettino, but not in this instance. In this case, he did what I think most of us would have done, and that is rest your players, set up for success long-term in this competition.
40:18These pundits and journalists, they should have been on their hands and knees for days begging Pochettino to make this game meaningless. Begging them, don't play yellow cards, injuries, knockout stages. And yet here we are, sorry Don, here we are going over this game, some people with a tooth comb and a magnifying glass because he's there and he's there and he's oh my god sometimes sometimes i sit here and i think what am i listening to as ali said they've maneuvered themselves into and by the way this because of the stupid head-to-head because if it was goal difference the game wouldn't have been meaningless meaningless but it was they've maneuvered themselves into this magnificent position the whole country's looking forward and all of a sudden a meaningless game is getting people's backs up.
41:05I've never heard so much stupidity in all my life. That takes us to Don. I knew you were going there. Nice little segue. Sorry. Good segue. That was him not me. No, it was a good segue. I just find it embarrassing how people can be negative towards the job that Pochettino's done. There's many a team on the flight going home now would love to be in their position. Including Turkey. Absolutely. And by the way, they've had a shocking tournament, but you look at their individual players. We were talking about them yesterday. They're not a bad side. Montella's had a mare with them, the players that they've got to choose from.
41:38But how can you be negative about a USA team that's won two on the spin and earned the right to make as many changes? And also, if you're Pochettino, you use this as an exercise to say, right, these are the players I'm going to pick. Let's see if I can rely on you when we go deeper into the competition. And there would have been four or five playing last night who we can't rely on. There, your big players come back in and say, well, I give you a chance to impress. If you had it done and you had it played well, maybe you could have been in the conversation to start the next game. But now they're going to come up against Bosnia or Egypt and South Korea.
42:06They've got a great chance. They're not going to lose any sharpness having 10 days or the ones that didn't play. In fact, that was a little surprise Pulisic came on. But obviously he wanted to give him a little bit of game time for his sharpness because he has missed everything apart from the first half of the Paraguay game. yeah I think Don's right there I mean it was a chance for others to put it was a chance in a game that they didn't have to win for others to put their hand up and say right you can rely on me if such and such gets injured and it was a chance to give other people some sharpness because if somebody gets injured in the round of 32 a couple of players then somebody might have to come in obviously so that was the opposite look Mauricio Pochettino what six months, eight months, twelve months ago was rightly getting criticised because they were getting some bad results.
42:55He was chopping and changing the team. But as Ali said, this platform that we're on at the moment, this World Cup and the way that the US have dealt with it and the way that Pochettino has dealt with it, isn't the time to criticise what this manager is doing. You know, if they're a side that's going home or they're a side that was good, if they were going through as one of the best thirds in the group, then you could say, well, this is just frankly not good enough. You didn't need to micro-analyse that game last night. You take the game for what it was. He doesn't need to spend any of his time explaining to people who should know better that he's doing this for the benefit of the knockout stages.
43:35He shouldn't have to waste a millisecond of his time having to explain his decisions at the moment because it's simplicity at its best. I will ask a question about the game, though, and it's probably an answer we knew already. There's quite the golfing class when it comes to who's starting for the US. And who is in that squad? And we shouldn't be surprised because that is the level of the United States. They have about, I would say, about 13, 14 players that you can rely upon. And then after that, there is a gap. But again, that should not be surprising. We're not talking about France. Yes. We're not talking about Spain.
44:12And that's why when we have the conversation, if the United States are good enough to win this whole thing, you kind of go, who's having that conversation? There has been conversation. You know, those same people that you're talking about. The American media. Those same people that you're talking about are having that conversation. And that's when you think about the United States and their ceiling in this competition. Quarterfinals. Yeah. Because that's. Well, if you look at the show, the bracket again. That's a dream. We're talking about Norway. We're talking about what's going on elsewhere.
44:41You look at the US. You've drawn this up beautifully. Bosnia is essentially a similar set up team as Paraguay or Australia. and then after that, Egypt or South Korea. You think those are manageable for the United States, and then you get into the quarterfinal that could potentially be either Portugal and Spain, and now we're talking. Now we're having a different type of conversation. But yes, everything is set up for the United States, and that first team, that first group of players that will be well-rested for Bosnia to now be successful in the knockout stages. And now we're in a point in which you are in the dance.
45:13There are a bunch of teams that are no longer in the dance. It's now win or go home, and it's very simple. Nobody needs to explain that to anybody in the media. You just win or go home. And I think Mauricio Pochettino has made the decisions that are necessary to best prepare his team for that very stage and for that very reason. I think looking at that bracket, it is very feasible. If they continue the US, that is, to play in the manner in which they have, it is very feasible they could be in the quarterfinals. That's when you get the eye-opener. Yes. Yeah. Portugal. To get that far, there's no, obviously, there's no US bias here.
45:46Objectively, that's not bad. The criticism will come if they don't beat Bosnia or Egypt or South Korea. And then rightly so. You do look at that bracket and think there's no reason why they can't get to Spain or Portugal. If they get to the quarterfinal, and it's Portugal or Spain, barring some anomaly, if they get to the quarterfinal, I would say that is a very, very good World Cup for the United States. Yeah, most definitely. And I don't think that's not been... Because you've got to remember what we were saying before. And if they were somehow to beat, and we're getting ahead of ourselves, but there is a pathway because they won their group.
46:22If they were to go head-to-head with a Portugal or a Spain and get a result there, that's next level. Yes. That is next level. My feeling would be, though, looking at those two teams with their talent levels, that would be extremely difficult. But you've got to buy a ticket to win the lottery. You've got to try it. And I could see them being in that quarterfinal. There is potential for that to happen. And I think that's why Pochettino is thinking the way he is. and he mentioned it in his quotes after. He said, we're looking a little bit longer term here. We're not looking at Turkey. Absolutely.
46:54We're looking at the next week, the next 10 days, the next two weeks, and how we potentially prepare for these knockout games, which are the way this format is set up with 48, the insanity of 48 teams with, we're waiting on the best of the poorest teams to go through in third place, is that they're going to be in those knockouts. So you've got to think about that. But yeah, the US in a quarterfinal against a Portugal or a Spain, that actually would be a real acid test of where they are and how far they need to go. And I think there's nothing wrong with that. Ali's had enough because we're talking Scotland in a minute.
47:31He's gone. The Scots are still here, though. ESPN FC with you tomorrow, 9am Eastern on ESPN2.

48:44Looks like that's it, boys. I mean, if Don and I go, you're screwed. The end of the... Well, no, I'd love it. My own show. Chatted to myself. Hey! You can just chat to the camera. Just do stats. I'll just do brilliant stats. Get my scar out. Show the world. It'd be lovely. Yeah. If you don't mind, I'd like to give Don the whole floor here. Absolutely, Don. Scotland are done. Well, it's been done for ages. I mean, we've bashed them enough, haven't we? Not really. Well, OK. Everyone said the fans have been great. Fans have been great. Players have been terrible. Steve Clarke's done a poor job, in my opinion, because I don't know why, I've said it before, I don't know why you come up with the conclusion that when you've got two games against Morocco and Brazil, you want to go defensive against Morocco and attacking against Brazil.
49:31Makes no sense whatsoever. But I think there has to be a mentality shift now. Everyone's talking on social media and the Scotland fans that I've listened to and read, it's like Scotland have always had this defeatist attitude. where they've come into a World Cup, but then bottled it and choked. Why can't they go and give Morocco a game like Haiti did? Why can't they after the Haiti game, when it was a scrappy 1-0 win, and it's the first game, so they give them the excuse, but they won the game, credit to them. But then after that, it was almost like, well, we can't beat Morocco. We can't beat them.
50:01Then you leave it on the Brazil game. You're definitely not going to beat Brazil. But there's got to be a mentality shift to go away from. Oh, we'll just do what we can, and we'll go so far, and then we'll go home. You've got to aim a bit higher than that. But they had a great time. Oh, it's good. And Boston loved them and all as well. Oh, that was great. Yeah, that was very good. The socials were brilliant. Sorry? The socials were brilliant. You know, overtaking Fenway Park. Oh, yeah. Hiring out. The bagpipes. All of it. Not a bagpipes. Well, they're just drawing across the roads in Boston now.
50:33Bagpipes everywhere. I don't know how that awful noise anymore. And then the English came. Yeah, indeed. Extra time. Yeah, they're full of wind. Yeah. Well, yes. Made a career out of it. ESPN Extra Time, available on YouTube.
50:51So we'll see the conclusion of the group stages in the World Cup on Saturday. Six games for you in total. Croatia, Ghana, Panama, England, Colombia, Portugal should be good. Congo, DR, Uzbekistan, Algeria, Austria, Jordan, Argentina. Colombia, Portugal stand out a bit, don't they? That looks like the best game. I mean, you could imagine Argentina racking up loads against Jordan, but that's the best game. Yeah. Which one are you looking forward to, Craig? Oh, the only one that I'm involved in tomorrow. The three Lions? Panama v England. Yes, indeed. And then home early night while you boys pick up the slack.
51:24Harry Kane penalty, 72nd minute. That'll be that. Goodbye. Oh, boring England again. Yeah, exactly. We'll be back tomorrow. Just a reminder. Until then, goodbye.
51:38Welcome in to the latest edition of Extra Time. Thank you very much for all your messages. Craig, are you upset or proud still to be the last Scottish player to get a red card in the World Cup? Oh, very proud. Yeah, very proud indeed. It's the only reason I wanted them to stay in. Yeah, just so someone else can get sent off, but they've been sent home instead. Yeah, well, getting sent off better than getting sent home. Although we were. Well, you were sent off and sent home. You did the double. Don? Yeah, but at least I didn't hang about for three days. Don, you made the point that you still hold a Scottish record.
52:07Yeah, but I didn't quite get there. What's your Scottish record? The last player at the Tour of the winner against England. To score a winner against England, right. That's not great, is it? You're not feeling that? Not really, Don. I feel it's a bit tenuous. Well, he played in it. So he's part of the winning team. So both of us are still hanging on to something. I'm not mentioning it. Of the current third place teams that might make it into the knockout stage, who do you think could end up being dangerous team to face after getting a second bite at the Apple in the World Cup? Ready, Don? Senegal.
52:34Ecuador, Senegal, Sweden, South Korea, Croatia, Belgium. Senegal. Senegal? I do. I've got a strong feeling that the African sides are playing well. It's their competition to go quite far. And Senegal have impressed me. I wouldn't bet on Belgium. They weren't that impressive against Norway, were they? Yeah, but I wouldn't bet on Belgium. I mean, Belgium would be so boring. No, not South Korea. Not Croatia these days. Sweden? No, don't start me on Sweden. Ecuador. They did beat Germany, didn't they? I would say, yeah. Fellas, do you think Anderson could get significant better at City if he adds goals and assists to his games?
53:11Where do you think his ceiling is and is there a player he reminds you of? I mean, he will get better if he gets goals and assists. I mean, that's kind of obvious if he can add that to his game. Who's he reminds you of? Who's he reminds you of, Anderson? Normally, really. The fee is ridiculous. How much is it? I don't know. Don't call me that. 116 million? Yeah, which is mental. Because when you watch midfield players who've got the ability to control a game, you think of Petrinha. If he's 120 million close to, then Petrinha's 220 million. So he's going to have to prove himself, because you remember when Calvin Phillips went there from Leeds?
53:52Yeah. He's still got two years left on his contract, and he just couldn't cope. Elliot Anderson's better than that because he's got a better mentality, he's got more attributes and he's got more to his game. but when you go to Man City you've got to produce so if you can add goals and assists then obviously what a buy but it's a lot of money. I mean we've been so busy with this World Cup.
54:14I wonder where this is going. Just in case I've missed this. Right. Have they announced it? No. City haven't announced Mureski yet. Not yet. No. Or 115 charges whichever way you want to take this. It's a little weird isn't it? Yeah it's strange. Don do you have a theory on it? You have your sources. No, no, I think it's all done. Yeah. I mean, what you read. You texted Xavi Alonso who's going to go to Chelsea. And you were right. That's the first time you've given me any information. I've given you loads. You told me Harry Kane was going to manage to save. That was done. I've told you the story a million times.
54:43It was done. It was done. It was done. And it was very last second that it fell through. So it wasn't done. It was done. It wasn't signed. My sources, unlike Stevie's, are quite good. Well, that's not difficult. True. Here's his ketchup or mustard. That's his sources. Liverpool didn't want Alonso, apparently. They weren't keen on him. I don't think they wanted to play three at the back. That's the problem with Alonso. He didn't play three at the back at Real Madrid. He'd done it at Leverkusen. Yeah, I know that, yeah. I saw he'd play three at the back then. Craig, percentage chance that the USA beats Portugal or Spain?
55:15This is a long way to go if they get past Bosnia and Herzegovina, and then if they get past Egypt, in theory, then they get to the quarterfinals against Spain or Portugal. Who would they prefer? Let's start off with that. Spain. Spain? I think. I think the normal answer would have been... Pre-tournament, Portugal. But the Spaniards have huffed and puffed thus far.
55:41No, I mean, because... Portugal, we could say, but Ronaldo, again, he's got a couple of goals. But he's not going to run away from you. It's going to take the best version of USA to beat Portugal or Spain. It's going to have to be their best version. Let's do a percentage. Percentage against Spain. I'm going to say, I'm going to give the US... 30 against Spain. That's where I was going. Yeah, 30 against Spain. And what's against Portugal? Slightly higher. I'm a third. 35. A third chance of winning and two thirds against both teams. All right, 33.3, recurring. Yeah. 33.3. It's doable. No, because that's 99.9.
56:23I said recurring What does that mean? It means that the three goes on for infinity So therefore But I like to do the 33.4 But then you're over the 100 % The good news is it's doable I'm not over It is doable You are over I'm not over I'm over What because 33.4 plus 33.4 plus 33.4 is 100.2 I'm like 33.3 33.3 and 33.4 It always has to be one slightly out Yeah exactly so that doesn't work if you're going thirds That's not a year of thirds, is it? It's not. Wow, it's too much man math for me, this. It's close enough. Wow. Next level. Oh dear, that is it. Thank you very much, everybody. Welcome, Don.
57:05Thank you. You doing all right? I'm doing well. Hanging in there? Yeah, hanging in. Had a lovely dinner. Three days in. Nice day of dinner. How's it going? Don? You paid? I had to, because I lost a bet to Ali, didn't I, with Solo. And I just gave it. And he just gatecrashed it. Why didn't you tell me? I would've killed it. There you go, boy. Dan gatecrashed and had a ribeye. nice rib eye yeah as well
