0:34Dan Thomas:We are one day out. It's the World Cup final tomorrow and the bronze medal game today, but it has all come down to Spain against Argentina in what is a first ever World Cup final between the reigning European and South American champions. And after game 103 will be played today. It will be game 104 tomorrow. The World Cup final. We're looking ahead to it in today's show. Thank you so much for being with us. Kay Murray, Shaka Hislop, Nader Manua and Alejandro Moreno. Just a few things to know as we do head into tomorrow's final between Spain and Argentina. Argentina seeking to become the first nation to win four straight major titles.
1:14Dan Thomas:Spain have 5-0 and 1 in win-drawing losses in the last six major tournament finals. They're in a 37-game on beaten streak in all competitions. Messi will become the oldest outfield player to appear in a World Cup final at 39 years and 25 days. and 11 of the last 13 men's major finals have been won by the team with an extra day of rest. All things to talk about as we welcome in Alex Aljo in New York ahead of tomorrow's final. We'll be hearing from Alex in just a moment. Let me tell you, she's been rubbing shoulders with some big names in the last few days. Not just you guys here. She's also been wearing a cowboy hat in the last few days, but there you go.
1:54Dan Thomas:She wasn't doing that though. She wasn't doing that when she met these big names yesterday. We'll get to that in just a moment. Let's get to what it's all come down to here, Ale. The big final between Spain and Argentina, finalisima. Yeah, and the storylines coming into this final are all over the place. And it really depends on what you want to focus on. But honestly, when you think about the contrast of what these two teams have been coming into this final and the contrast in style, the possession of Spain and the great fight, heart, soul, and all of that from Argentina, their willingness to die for Lionel Messi and to die for Argentina on the field.
2:33Is that enough to upset the quality of execution of Spain and the quality of possession of Spain? It's two contrasting styles coming into a final in which there's a whole lot to play for. Lionel Messi, La Minha Mal, the picture that has gone around the world that we had seen years upon years ago, but now has become the storyline of all storylines coming into this final. There's a lot of juxtaposition, a lot of things, a lot of stories coming and going. But most of all, it's two very talented teams that should make for a very entertaining final.
3:06Dan Thomas:Yeah, it absolutely should. I feel so many people are saying Spain, because of the way that they do play, and forgetting what we've been seeing from Argentina in this never-say-die-and-fighting manner that they play, Xhaka. Yeah, and unsurprisingly, in the one instance, probably suits Argentina, given that they were second favourites, certainly in the semifinal as well, go as far back as you absolutely like. They aren't bothered by that. They aren't bothered by who the bookies favor over them. To Ali's point, their only concern is what they give on the pitch. And they have shown that they will give it all till the very end.
3:42Everything we've said about Argentina, an aging team, they aren't what they used to be three and a half years ago. None of that has been evidenced, certainly, in the semifinal. and expect to see exactly the same. Now, Spain, that display against France really was one to be reckoned with, but Argentina provides a very different test to France, to what they put up against Spain. This is Argentina with a never-say-die attitude that I'm not sure many other teams have been able to boast. Yeah, the way this tie is set up is so interesting because when you showed all the stats that lead into this game, You realize both these teams they just don't lose games of football and as they get further and further into these Somebody's gonna have to lose.
4:28Well, thank you Thank you for different reasons.
4:30Dan Thomas:Yeah, exactly Yeah, but completely different reasons and you just see it like I was not I wasn't down on Spain I was high on France then just before the game people said well, you know Spain have beaten France the last two times And it wasn't like ten years ago. It's like always in the last 18 months basically. You're like, huh? Okay, and then Spain do what they do then you see Argentina playing against England and sandbox that convinced you about spain do you know with one of our 20 sandboxes you know we're a bit late for the sbs but maybe next year still waiting for our invitation so we look at spain 37 games unbeaten at international level is outrageous so even if that was club level you say well this is an elite team but at international level it's staggering but then we're talking about argentina being the underdogs in a World Cup final with Lionel Messi in the team.
5:23That almost makes me feel sick as a thought. Because in some ways, for the culture that, say, Argentina have, which some people like, don't like, the sporting culture, the footballing side of things, when you see what it's like in the dressing room, when you see all the players singing the same songs, doing the same gestures as the fans, football is everything to them. And they have probably the best player that's ever played the game. And they're going to enter that final as underdogs. That is a scary, scary proposition.
5:46Dan Thomas:Now, we mentioned big-name players who Alex Aljo was rubbing shoulders with yesterday. One of them, Zlatan Ibrahimović. Tell us more, Alex. Yes, I had a great day yesterday. It started with David Beckham and Kaka. Then, as you can see there, I went on to do a podcast with Zlatan, with Zidane and David Beckham again. And Zlatan actually said something really interesting. He said, I hope that Lamin Yamal isn't starstruck by Lionel Messi. and we've all seen that photo, haven't we? It is hard not to think that that's AI, that photo of Lionel Messi giving Laminia Mal a bath. But I don't think Laminia Mal is the type of player that's going to be starstruck by Lionel Messi.
6:27Dan Thomas:Yeah, look at it there, look at it there. It certainly looks like AI, doesn't it? But I just don't think that Laminia Mal is going to be starstruck at all. And he's due a big game, isn't he? He did play well in the last game because he played for the team, but I think we are due a big performance from Laminia Mal. Hopefully he wasn't eating anything too unhealthy from that street fellow here in New York City. But yeah, he's had a great tournament because I think the Spain team hasn't been about him, has it? They haven't relied on one superstar on Luminium Al. It's been about the collective, the team effort, the family, as Luis De La Fuente keeps saying.
7:03Dan Thomas:And one thing I want to say as well, David Beckham was booed on stage with me because he sat on the fence when I asked him his prediction for the final. and there were so many Spain fans in the room, a lot of Real Madrid fans outnumbering the Argentinians and I think they expected him to say Spain but he couldn't say Spain because of his bestie, Leo Messi. See, even David Beckham gets booed. We don't like fence-sitting when it comes to predictions. You have got to take a side. So Alex just mentioned that photo with Lionel Messi and Lamin Yemal. There it is. Lionel Messi giving Lamin Yemal baby Lamin.
7:38A healthy-sized Lamin Yemal. We've actually heard from Lionel Messi on this very moment.
7:43Dan Thomas:Here's what he had to say.
7:48I wish him the best. Honestly, looking at that photo is crazy because, well, that's life, right? I took a photo with him when he was a baby, and today we're both facing each other in a World Cup.
8:03Dan Thomas:Social media has been brilliant with all of this. I know you've seen this, Shaka, where they're giving comparisons, one of them being Harry Potter and Baltimore and how that baby can come back later and maybe haunt you. Yeah, was the other one from the Lion King's car and Simba. It just kept going on and on. And it's funny because, as everybody keeps mentioning, to feel that you roll the clock forward, what, 18 years, and this is happening, these two players are meeting each other in a work-up final, any other context would be almost, would be unbelievable. But then you're talking about the greatest I've ever done it and the player who is at 19 years old making a case as the air apparent makes this all the more incredible all the more surreal in so many ways.
8:52And now one of those will be crowned world champion. This night again just kind of to the understory or the backstory to this World Cup final. It doesn't get more incredible. It doesn't get any more unbelievable than that one. as it pertains to both of those players on the field, Argentina need the best of Lionel Messi in order for them to have an opportunity to win this final against Spain. Whereas Spain, they haven't had the best of La Minna Mal, and I don't think they need the best of La Minna Mal in order to win tomorrow against Argentina. They would like to have that version, and particularly if I'm La Minna Mal and I'm looking at the matchup against Nicolas Tagliafico, I'm saying, clear out, give me the ball, I'll get after this guy.
9:34A healthy, fully fit version of Laminya Mal is looking at Tagliafico and saying, I am going to take you for a dance today. I'm going to take you for a ride. You have no chance against me because while he is a serviceable defender, he doesn't have the pace to keep up with Laminya Mal. Maybe Laminya Mal has saved his best moment and his best match for the greatest moment of all, and that is a World Cup final. Yeah, that wouldn't surprise me at all. I think as you look at what Laminya Mal has been saying throughout the tournament, he's been saying he's excited for these knockouts. The bigger the stage, you know, the more he wants to perform.
10:03And I think in some ways even though Spain were great as a collective in the semifinal I think we are forgetting that Luca Dean at left back for France was in hell for 90 minutes like Laminya Mao was quicker stronger technically better Everything he was really effective the needs away. He had to come off for Hernandez So he did have an impact in that game because he was sort of forced He needs to play a different type of games what he wanted to do and I think going into this final Obviously Alex has spoken to somebody that is an expert But if you listen to all you have some differences with slide Listen, we don't sit on the fence here.
10:32We do not sit on the fence here. But ultimately, at the end of the day, like you're saying, he hope he isn't in awe of Messi. There's nothing that I've seen from Laminya Ma that would make you think for a single second that that would be the case. And I think if you listen to what he's saying, if you observe the way that he's playing, Laminya Ma could not be more excited for this World Cup final.
10:49Dan Thomas:Let's get some more pictures of Alex's day yesterday with Nadam's buddy. It's Lathan Ibrahimovic in those pictures. My parents as well. How special is that, Alex? That's lovely. Yeah, I said to Zlatan, the son, well, I said to my parents, the son you never had, and then sent it to my brother, and I said, sorry, you've been replaced. But he understood, Zlatan can replace him. I'm sure he'd be hard work as a son, wouldn't he? And then, yeah, there I am with David Beckham and Kaka. It was a really great day yesterday. It's been a really special tournament as well. I followed Argentina and Spain throughout.
11:21Dan Thomas:It seems a long time ago that Spain drew nil-nil with Kate Verde. I remember speaking to Mikel Oyazawal after that, game and I said, you know, what's happening? What's going on with Spain? Like, thought you guys were going to win it. And he said, tranquila, tranquila. Just you wait, just you wait. And I do believe that Spain are going to win this. Okay, so that's your prediction. That's your prediction. Give us a score prediction then, Alex. You know what? And I'm going to go for another bold prediction. I think Spain are going to dominate. I think it's going to be easy for them. Famous last word, eh?
11:55Dan Thomas:I'm going to go 3-0. 3-0 Spain. Okay. More from Alex Aljo. I'm confident. Somebody should say, tranquila. Tranquila, Alex. Alex, thank you so much. We'll be hearing from you of course tomorrow as well. Thank you so much for being with us. 14:28Dan Thomas:ESPN FC is brought to you by DQ. Happy tastes good. It's the bronze final game today, the third place match between France and England. France who were beaten by Spain and England who were beaten by Argentina. So here is Thomas Tuchel with more on the English loss to the Argentines. If you are asking if I regret my decision, if this is the question, then say no, I don't regret my decisions. Because I felt that we become too passive. I felt that the momentum switches in the match. And I tried to help my team. I tried to help. I tried to support. I think the gap is there because of the titles that Argentina, France and Spain have as nations.
15:21Dan Thomas:teams as countries, what they built over many years with the coaches and the team. There is still a slight gap that we have to close. I think the gap shows in almost the expectations of these countries to win a World Cup and to be in a final. We did not, I think we demanded it from ourselves within camp for sure and we dreamed about it and we pushed for it and we competed for it. But there is still a gap too close in the way how to play football under pressure, in the way to implement yourself, on the very next level, I think. Julien Leroy joins us now, but I do have to start with Nader Manua because he was very passionate about Tuchel's comments just the other day, so I'm wondering how you're feeling about what he said ahead of this game.
16:22Well, is it better? Did that make it better for you?
16:25Dan Thomas:Can you cope with these? Because you said you couldn't cope the other day. Well, the other day, it was very, very fresh, like the stuff that he'd been saying. And to be honest, from my perspective, I was advised by somebody to watch the game back, to see if it changed my perspective, and it absolutely did not change it at all. It actually made it a lot worse. You said watch after England scored the first goal. And I said, do I have to? And I did. And you can see things more clearly. I think when we were watching the game for the first time, you caught in the emotion of it all. But I watched it back, knowing obviously the result.
16:55And I could see things start to happen. And some of the players were starting to drop. The pressing wasn't the same anymore. There were a lot of very early retreats. We're going to go and press. No, no, no, let's just come back. Let's come all the way back. And context here is key. I think someone like Jurgen Klopp was trying to say, oh, it's very easy for everybody. to talk about how you should have done this, like the Monday quarterback or whatever it's called. And I get that because I was watching it from the comfort of my own home. I get that. But context is key. Why is Thomas Tuchel in charge of England?
17:22He was in charge of England to replace Gareth Southgate, who people believed couldn't take the team to the next stage. That's what they believed. That's what they put all their money into. So to then hear him talking about stuff like he has no control whatsoever over the culture within the country and his team out there on the field, who he's had two years to prepare. For me personally, I still find it very, very disappointing. And it's not to say that he needs to say, take accountability and say, I should have done this, I should have done that. But it's almost like he's just writing it off. They have momentum, so this is what it is.
17:54And, you know, I try to help my team by just putting five defenders out there. Like, signaling is a big thing in my mind. And so I speak with Cesc Fabrias, the Como manager, and maybe some of this to do with Spanish culture, but he said he will never take off an attacker for a defender because of the message it gives to his team and to the opposition. And that's somebody that's relatively new in terms of management. But when your manager is making that message, like you know yourself, if this is what it is, this is what it's going to be. And I think England needed something different. The players that he had, I think, were capable of doing better.
18:24So if he accepts it, because very quickly, I think it was maybe perception-wise watching the game back. Sorry to go on a little rant here. No, no, go ahead. England retreated with their substitutions before Argentina stepped forward with theirs because the three subs that Argentina made were like for like more or less because you saw I think Molina came off you had Lissandro Martinez come off and then you had Rodrigo De Paul coming on for Simeone so it's basically like for like and at that point England were like we need to take Gordon off and put a defender on that to me is the manager making the decision that this is what it's going to be when he could have said we need to find more energy to build this press because they're starting to get into a rhythm and I think the fact that he stepped back the fact that the players did as well obviously they are the first part of that but a manager is willing to accept what he's willing to accept and I thought he was supposed to be the guy that was different to everybody that's come before just my opinion It's a good thing that you've turned the page though, Nathan I'm writing the same thing on the next page
19:20Dan Thomas:He was also very passionate on the Gab and Jules podcast because Jules said that Thomas Tuchel should be sacked Yeah
19:28Julien Laurens:I mean, I maintain it He's not going to be sacked anyway, we know that He's going to stay on even if they lose against France today and if they lose against Spain in their next game in September in the Nations League. I just thought what I saw and I watched the game again like Nadem and what I saw again. And I know the players have to take some responsibility. It's not just on Tuchel, but I would give it 90-10 to Tuchel. For me, it was a suckable offense, really. The lack of coaching. And I think even to a certain extent, what we've heard from him since is as bad as what we saw on the pitch in that second half.
20:05Julien Laurens:Because for him to add insult to injury with a comment about English DNA, and basically it's your fault, your English football, those English players, if we can't play in a game like that, it's never his fault. I've said that before. Even in the press conference that we just showed you from yesterday, he doesn't actually admit that he got it wrong. He said he doesn't regret anything, and yet what he did was wrong because England lost that game when they were 1-0 up with half an hour to go, when they were 1-0 up with five minutes to go even. So for him to still not read the room properly, not understanding the issue that he's created, especially with England fans, with England players, some of those players currently in his dressing room are not happy with him, didn't understand his decisions, his choices, don't understand his communication.
20:55Julien Laurens:And for him to almost double up on it, I find it really mind-blowing for somebody so smart. So I still think that he should go. He won't go. But I'm not happy with him.

21:06Dan Thomas:Shekhar, I just heard there to my side when he said what we saw was as bad as what we heard was as bad as what we saw on the pitch. Mm-hmm. So, no, listen, I get you make that point immediately after the game. We're in motions are still running high. Maybe things haven't settled. Maybe you haven't joined Nadam in watching the game over again. Or Jules. I wouldn't recommend it, to be honest. I would not recommend it. have gotten together and watch the game over. But to still take that position, what, two days, three days after the semifinal, that you didn't make any mistakes, it all went to plan or whatever it is.
21:40There's only two people I know that stubborn.
21:46I'm sorry, what? I'm sorry, what? There's only two people I know that stubborn. I'm not calling any names. What do we mean, tell him? If you call any names, I'll whistle. I cannot believe he is still taking that position. You've lost the game. We were discussing yesterday, as players, when you lose a game, you go through all, which side did I take that goal kick from the right side? Should I move it to the other side? Should I put it on top of the right back instead of the left back? That's how granular you get as a player in looking back on games that you lost. as a manager to maintain that same position in a game that you lost is absolutely beyond me.
22:33Now, also, last week, we sat in the studio, Steve McManaman was here with us, and he said something to the effect of Tuchel was brought in for England to go all the way. And I asked him, so are you saying then that if they don't win the World Cup, he should go? And his response was, well, let me just say if they don't win it, but if they don't put up a darn good fight, In the final, he has to go. Now, we know they're not doing that. So for him to still have this position, it almost as though it shouldn't be a debate within the English FA as to whether he stays on. It really shouldn't. I just don't get so much of this from Thomas Tuchel.
23:14It's amazing to see and hear how he separates himself from the failures of England. says, we became too passive. I'm sorry. Are you not the man in charge here who's making the decisions? And part of the reason as to why this team became too passive and too conservative, if there was only a person that could actually change this and could impact how this team looks on the field, it would have been Tomas Tuchel. And yet he separates himself from that. And it's like, it's Captain Deflecto at his very best. at his very best. And you could see the reaction from John Stones next to him, sitting next to him, when Thomas Succo started going down the path of, you know, the gap between us and these other teams is because England just hasn't won anything.
24:05And you're John Stones sitting right there and you're saying, now you're just blaming us. You're shifting the blame in this direction and what we are or not as English players and as English people because he had a go at the DNA as well. How, as a manager of a national team, you're able to somehow protect yourself, shelter yourself, and say that it's everybody else's issue and not you. How does that happen and how does that not get punished? I have no idea. The lack of accountability here is just stinky.
24:43Dan Thomas:Okay, pick up on that, Nadim, while we show you some pictures of the England players enjoying a barbecue in their downtime. Yeah, this was in cancer wasn't it? It's good to sort of refresh I imagine after a big disappointment So yeah, it's good that they've had some free time and they're not just going off in there once You know there is sort of a collective there, but I think Watching back that game again But it reminded me of a few things and this is this is like a it's like a big
25:10It's just it's almost like This might sound like a real nice. I was gonna say like this is related to like that game's going on all of a sudden a couple of people stop pressing yeah Jordan Pickford starts taking lots of longer balls hoping that Harry Kane can win a flick on so that's one thing that's another thing the players are starting to look tired you're looking at this disaster building and building and building and we can see that the manager who is being paid to see everything about that doesn't think we need an injection of energy to like be more positive that's disappointing but the bigger thing for me so England for the majority i don't know if you'd agree with this maybe i'm wrong we'll see what jewels thinks england will be the favorite for 90 of the games that they play as a nation yeah when they're playing the european qualifiers due to their seeding and so on they're the favorite most of the time in this nation's nation's league now might be different but they'll be the favorite going through the tournament the way that they did was there a game where they weren't a clear favorite through this tournament probably not even against norway for how well they did probably not then they play argentina in the semi-final and it's more of like a coin toss and then tucco says England don't have the identity, DNA, and so on and so forth.
26:17So what he's basically saying is that they'll be caught in this perpetual loop to where they will win the games, where they are clear favorites. Then when it gets to a time where they play against a side who he believes has got a better culture in those moments, will likely beat them because they just have that. But he's saying that they have the better culture because they won. Had England won, then does that mean that Argentina didn't have the better culture to begin with? And that's what I'm saying. He's over here shaping an argument so that so that he feeds his narrative. Yeah, but it just doesn't it just doesn't make sense
26:47Dan Thomas:Don't get him even more work No, no, no My back I can't leave those to a listen I just just leave this is just this is just from a footballing perspective for the way he's speaking about it in the context of him Being in charge right now somebody that's gonna distance himself from the team as Ali said seems insane because they will have more moments like this in the future I was gonna say well, you know, we played against Spain, so you know one before. You know what that means. OK, let's talk about the other manager, Didier Deschamps, especially because we've got Jules with us. What are we looking at?
27:18Dan Thomas:14 years as a 10-year-old France manager here, Jules. How would you grade it?
27:23Julien Laurens:Yeah, I mean, it's been pretty incredible. And the debate back home right now is he's won one World Cup in those 14 years. One Nations League as well, if you want to count that. But really, World Cup. So one win in sixth tournament. You see where he got. OK, apart from that Euro 2020, who was played in 2021, the rest is remarkable, really, to say the least. I know there's only one World Cup to show for it, but it's still pretty special, I think. Could he have one more? Sure, he had incredibly talented players and generations, one after the other, through those 14 years. His win ratio is 66%. It's 185 games, 26 in the World Cup.
28:06Julien Laurens:I think it's remarkable when you also think that he took over a team that was in ruins after 2010 and 2012. So the work that he's done is great. Probably, yes, in a better world, there's another title there. There's that final in 2022, obviously. The one in 2016, the Euros in France, in Paris, was hard to take as well. And they were close. We hit the post in 2016. We could have beaten Portugal. There's obviously the one against Argentina in Qatar in 2022. too. But I think he's the greatest head coach we've ever had. I think he's one of the greatest in world football in general, in history. But if you really want to be a bit picky, yeah, maybe there's one more big title there that is missing.
28:52Dan Thomas:8 out of 10, 9 out of 10 duels. And what would Lekeep, who are famously stingy with their player ratings, give him?
28:59Julien Laurens:I would give 9 out of 10. I know some people back home are a bit more critical let's say. Don't forget as well there's the style of football in those 14 years. Okay, this World Cup was maybe a bit different up to the semi-final but remember two years ago in Germany at the Euros, all of us on the show we destroyed him because the football was so bad, so poor, despite the players that he had he was so defensive minded so negative, so passive, to go back to Thomas Tuchel's points, that that should have never happened and yet he stayed on, changed his identity a little bit. Credit to him for that.
29:38Julien Laurens:But the football was never really that great before, even when they won in 2018, for example. So I would give him nine. Some would give him eight. Eight is probably fairer, but I like him a lot. I've got a soft spot for him. But others back home would probably give between six and seven, which I think is a bit harsh.
29:55Dan Thomas:OK, let's get to today's game then, Jules, because it is a fully recognized tournament fixture. So it is a chance for the likes of Kylian Mbappe to get those stats up in the golden boot race. Will we see him?
30:07Julien Laurens:Yeah, he will start with the armband. He wants to play. He wants to get that golden boot and be Messi and Bellingham or Kane to the task. It will be two World Cups in a row where he's the top goal scorer. And I think that means a lot to him. For us, it might be different because they haven't won it. But for him, it's important. He will start. I think it's important for Deschamps as a last game to win it. I think the boys want to give him that as a farewell gift if you want. There's something really funny. We talked about it with Xhaka yesterday too on the show. But the French arrived on Thursday in Miami.
30:41Julien Laurens:And the players wanted Thursday evening off to see the family, to see their friends, to go to places that they like to go to. Xhaka knows. Xhaka knows as well. And Deschamps said no. There's a big game to come. It's a big game. I don't want you to go out on Thursday, even match day minus two. So he's taking this game very seriously. OK. First of all, don't shift this on to me. Where should we shift it? No, yesterday, Jules was saying, yeah, they want to go out to serve. I know those places, they want to... Trust me. Trust me. Jules owned it yesterday. Now, all of a sudden, he's stood in my direction.
31:18Dan Thomas:Too late, Jules. Too late. But he always denies it. That's the thing. Jules owns it. You always deny that you're the party animal, and we know, Shaka. I think both things can be true at the same time, Shaka. I don't know what you're talking about. I don't know what you're talking about. Are you okay with this game mattering in terms of the tournament stats, Ali? Obviously, it always has. Yeah. Some very famous examples. It's part of the competition, and it really depends on how teams want to approach this game. And honestly, and I'm not going to refer to Shaka, but Shaka knows this very well. this is the last day before they go on break and the last day before you go on break usually players are not at their most productive because they may be thinking about other things that's why the guys that haven't played all that much get an opportunity to play in the third place match because they are excited to be there and they want to have this World Cup experience so I'm all for this game counting for whatever it needs to count for And if Kylian Mbappe wants to take advantage of it and score the goals, look, it's a game that is going to be open.
32:22It's a game that's going to be back and forth because, as I said before, it's a more relaxed environment. Again, Shaka knows this very well. Trust me on that. And so it is an open game back and forth that is going to lend itself for goal scoring opportunities for Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane, Jude Belliam, whoever wants to take advantage of this. But in order to take advantage of it, your mindset has to be correct. If you're thinking about your vacation, it doesn't matter how open the game is. you're not going to take full advantage of it.
32:50Dan Thomas:Naidem? No, I think that's fair. And I think because it's always like the same type of teams that make it to the semifinals, end up playing in this third place playoff or whatever we want to call it, there's a sense of apathy towards it. Like this doesn't really matter. But in a different world, this could be Norway against Switzerland or something like that. And I bet you for those two nations, it would mean everything to them because they'll talk about the chance to finish third. This is the best we've ever done at a World Cup. Whereas, you know, when it's France, when it's England, because they're playing the whole thing.
33:16Dan Thomas:Second best ever finish at a World Cup. You try to tell Tuchel that. Tuchel's saying, you know, this game doesn't matter. All those people spend all the money on the tickets for the game. They're like, ah, Tuchel's saying it doesn't matter. Let's just go in. It's fine. You know what you should do? Just go and watch the second half of that. Do it again. Do it again. Again. That was fun. Make sure to join the team tonight as they look back on it. ESPN Plus first at 7 p.m. Eastern and then a full wrap-up on ESPN FC tonight on ESPN2 at 10 p.m. Eastern. Pochettino's also been talking about his future.
33:45Dan Thomas:We'll hear what he had to say after this.
34:15Visit VivGuardMyWay.com. That's V-Y-V-G-A-R-T MyWay.com. And talk to your doctor about VivGuard Hattrulo. Brought to you by Argenics. It's Charles Barkley here with Wayfair. 34:52Dan Thomas:Wayfair, every style, every home. The World Cup is coming to an end, but the preseason is already underway for many sides. Liverpool coming off against Sunderland July 25th, 6 p.m. Eastern on ESPN Unlimited. So, Mauricio Pochettino has been talking about his future. He said we are evaluating it, looking at it, They, U.S. Soccer, have made me an offer to continue, and we will see. Next week, we will make a decision. Then, this is a picture on Instagram. What time is it? We can't be showing this type of thing, can we? Sorry if you're eating your lunch right now. Should have given you a little warning.
35:32The toes are creepy small.
35:34Dan Thomas:Julie and Laurentiis with us, too. They're teeny tiny toes. Well, with my Football Americas team here in the studio, I want to get your reaction to what we're hearing here from Puch. Well, it sounds to me much like leading up to the World Cup that he is flirting with everybody else. And while... Hence the feedback. Yes. It's all coming together now. Kiddos, don't you? Kiddos, don't you? Oh, no. You said that, huh? That was a low blow from that. Let's just watch England and bring us... He's been flirting. Feet or not, he's been flirting. And it feels like the United States Soccer Federation have already played their card.
36:22They say, yeah, we want you back. And Pochettino's like, well, we'll see. You know, it's not you, it's me sort of thing. I'm going to go look elsewhere. I'm going to see what's out there. And then I'll make my decision based on that. I agree. Listen, I'll believe it when I see it. If Pochettino stays on, I felt before the World Cup, He was going to move on to a club job. I felt during the work-up, you see him. And now it just feels like, well, let's see how pre-seasons go elsewhere. And I'll let you know how things pan out.
36:53Dan Thomas:Jules, as to Ale's point, do you think that he's just waiting to see what might happen early season if some jobs become available and then decide how his future looks?
37:02Julien Laurens:Yeah, absolutely. I think there's no doubt about that. I mean, as you can see here, that defeat against Belgium was what? Two and a half weeks ago? Two weeks ago? something like that how long do you need to know if you want to continue with his team or not and keep building what you've built so far in the last you know 18 months or whatever it was that he's been in charge or two years you know already they were talking during the tournament with him they talked about it before the tournament you know JT Baston and the federation have been have been on this whether whether you you would be happy as a as a USman national team fan to keep him or not it doesn't matter the federation want him to stay how long more do you need?
37:43Julien Laurens:Really, that's what I don't understand. Nothing is going to change between now and next week unless, to go back to our initial point and Ali's point, unless some European clubs in Italy, in Spain, are coming for him.
37:55Dan Thomas:Yeah, it's going to be interesting to see how the future plays out quickly from you, Nathan. Yeah, what I would say, if the coach isn't enthusiastic about reading it and signing it, then maybe just take it away and give it to somebody else. That's my take, anyway. Were you impressed about how flexible I was there, Nathan? It was all right. It was all right. I heard some creaking.
38:14Dan Thomas:Ali and Shaka had some fun on last night's show, which is streaming now on ESPN Plus with Alexis Nunes. Be sure to go and check out ESPN FC. I'll tell you something. Take that, Puchetino. Stay with us as we recap the World Cup so far as it comes to its end. That's next.

40:36Dan Thomas:Out!
40:54Dan Thomas:are down to just two, but so many more have carved their own stories, winning hearts and breaking hearts along the way. Here's a look back at some of the best of World Cup 2026 with Nader. Mexico, Canada, the United States, 16 cities, 3 countries, 40 teams, 104 matches, which sounded far too much until it wasn't enough. A Mexican fiesta in the opener, the Canadian salvage a draw, and the US of A followed with their greatest ever half of football. Germany scored seven, Sweden scored five, England scored four against Croatia. Messi's got a had picked at 39, which was historic. Everything Messi does, historic.
41:27Walking out of the tunnel, taking a corner, sitting on the bench while somebody else scores, historic. Not getting sense off is, well, something. No Way rode in. Haaland scored two. Mbappe scored two. Ronaldo kept playing. And Portugal drew with DR Congo, who knew how to celebrate. Cape Verde debuted against Spain. Spain had the ball. Spain kept the ball. Cape Verde kept the point. Vazinha gained a medium-sized country's population and social media followers. Scotland won over Haiti. The Tartan Army won over Boston. Then the second games began. The Mexican Fiesta rolled on. Canada put a sixth spot, their first ever World Cup win.
41:56The United States beat Australia. The hosts have momentum during the first week. Momentum is what you call it before anything bad happens. Speaking of bad, Turkey. The Netherlands scored five. Japan scored four. Spain scored four. Mbappe scored two more. Haaland scored two more. And more people started growing. Egypt got their first ever World Cup win, led by their modern-day pharaoh. Portugal scored five. Ronaldo scored two. Messi missed the pen. Didn't matter. Got two more. Became the competition's all-time leading goalscorer. England drew 0-0 with Ghana. It's gonna be alright. except for Uruguay, who couldn't beat Cape Verde.
42:22The calculating began. Third-place sports, nearly everyone was alive, except Haiti, no thanks to Brazil. Scotland couldn't survive the Moroccans. Boston couldn't survive the Scottish. Then came the final group games. Mexico finished perfect. The tequila was flowing. Drama in Jersey. Ecuador survived elimination after a comeback win over de mine shaft. The USA finally lost it. Didn't matter. Dembele scored three against the Norway B. Senegal scored five. Belgium scored five. England beat Panama. Messi didn't start and still scored. Ronaldo did not. Portugal drew with Colombia. Spain finished in first.
42:48Uruguay went home. Cape Verde advanced. the World Cup debutants survived the group of death. Scotland did not. The Brazilians took down the Scottish, but the Tarzan army still took down Miami. Bosnia made the presence known in Toronto. And with the last kick of the group stage, Austria snatched advancements from the jaws of elimination. After 17 pulsating days, 48 teams becoming 32 and brief. The knockout started in Los Angeles. Canada beat South Africa late. Brazil beat Japan even later. Germany played Paraguay. Penalties, drama. Havertz, Valtemada, ta, nein! Oviedo, same to be mine, Shaft. First World Cup exit ever on penalties.
43:17The Netherlands played Morocco. Also penalties. Also drama. Also European heavyweight out early. Looked like England were about to join them until Hurricane hit Atlanta. No way sail past Ivory Coast thanks to, you'll never believe it, him. It looks to be past Belgium's bedtime in Seattle before Lukaku and company woke up. Tealemans to the rescue and Senegal somehow out. France winning. Mbappe bag two more. Ho, hum. United States beat Bosnia. Balogun sees red. A call is made. Suspension suspended. The Azteca, Mexico versus Ecuador. No sleep for the visitors. No mercy for the hosts. A nightmare for the South American side.
43:44A dream for L3 and their fans. A celebration would ensure no rest for anyone long into the night. Spain comfortably beat Austria. Portugal, Croatia was anything but comfortable. Ronaldo's late penalty to draw a level. Ramos' late, late header, surely to win. But Croatia who collapsed at a death, or had they? The ball had a heartbeat. Portugal remained with a pulse. Egypt versus Australia. More drama, more penalties. The Socceroos go for the switcheroo. In comes Ryan. Out goes Beach and home goal the Aussies. Oi, oi, oi. The Swiss beat Algeria. Colombia beat Ghana. Well, Argentina will surely beat Cape Verde, right?
44:11Well, nobody taught the upstart African side. Extra time. Sydney Cabral with a screamer for the ages, but never doubt the Albi Celeste. The Black Magic proved too strong for the Blue Sharks. Cape Verde leaves with many a new fan. Argentina leaves with a win. 32 became 16. Switzerland, Colombia. 120 minutes no one will remember. A pound of shootout sees the Swiss survive. Canada versus Morocco. Jesse Marsh believed his side were better. Morocco believed they advanced because they won 3-0. France played Paraguay. Paraguay refused to play. Le Bleu refused to lose. Brazil missed the penalty in Harlem made them pay.
44:36Neymar in tears. Jan in tears. The Norwegian Navy sails on Mexico and England at the Azteca. Altitude, smog, fireworks. The three lines overcome all that. And a red card to advance. The most watched US men's national team game of all time. Americans confident Balogun back. Belgium didn't care. Bulldogs team America thanks to some extra motivation. Portugal vs Spain, 91st minute. Magic Mikel. Ronaldo's World Cup dreams extinguished. Messi missed a penalty. Egypt 2-0 late. Argentina on the verge. Poromero, then Messi and finally Enzo. 3-2 in the end. The Farrells went mad. Hassan said it was rigged.
45:07But the Egyptian dream is over. Down to 8. France-Morocco. Mbappe's turn to miss a penalty. And then score. Le Bleu Cruz. Yay, I got the goal! Belgium level late with Spain, but Courtois can't continue. And his replacement spills it. Magic Mikel to the rescue yet again. La Roja semi-final bound. Haaland came. The Norwegians struck first. Dews struck back. Norway said the Spider-Camp struck two. But Dews struck again. Another goalie Haaland. Haaland's voyage over and finally all square in Kansas City. The Swiss had momentum until Mbolo did that. Another late show for Argentina. Ten-man Switzerland tried their best, but extra time with Julien Alvarez were the difference.
45:37Argentina march on. The final four. France, Spain, England, Argentina. at all former champions. First up, Mbappe, Yamal. But it was Luca Dina who will be remembered most. 1-0 Spain. France had the star. Spain had the ball. 17 passes. And Pedro Porro. Au revoir, France. To Atlanta, a cauldron to emotion. The hand of God. Beckham's red card. The Falklands. So much atmosphere. Not much football. Which changed in the second half. England, 30 minutes from a World Cup final, but no match for an Argentinian onslaught. Enzo. Minuto 8-5. Goalazo. Stoppage time. Messi. Lautaro. Dagger. Pandemonium. Inevitable.
46:08Superhuman. He refuses to let them die. Now 39 days and 46 teams later only two remain the reigning European champions and the defending World Cup champions a meeting of destiny nearly 20 years in the making 19 year old Yamal 39 years old Messi Spain Argentina Sunday New Jersey 3 p.m.
46:26Dan Thomas:Oh yes. Wonderful work. Wonderful work. That was excellent. I don't want to be thinking. Minuto 85. Oh Alex. 85. I see you had to fight for some I'm just saying Look, let's deliver the people what they want It was an old Chad Ochoa Cinco That's why I said it that way, but it's cool You get there in the end Ochoa Cinco You're gonna get there in the end What would be nice is to see our touch screen Anyway, let's talk about this World Cup What we've just seen, obviously you just voiced through so much of it What's been one of your favorite moments? Doesn't it have to be a total standout? one of your favorites?
47:09I think some of the Norway memories as they've built on. I really enjoyed that. But also the realism of like Erling Haaland. After they won their second group game and they're into the next round and somebody tries to set up this big dramatic tie against France in the third game. So I don't care. They're probably going to win it. You know, I'm just so happy to be in that next round. And it's a reminder that like this World Cup is not just for the teams that think about winning it. It's for those who just love making history and love sort of representing the nation. Argentina and the way that they play when it comes to winning time.
47:40The last 20 minutes. I know you've seen it a few times. The last 20 minutes. I've never played against. Hang on. The England game. You just watched the England game again. Oh, that one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Winning time and to see the look in their eyes. This game has become about data analysis and numbers and analytics and all of that nonsense. And maybe that has value in it. But when you see Argentina and you look at them in the eyes, it's old school. You know these guys are internet. You know that these guys are going to do anything and everything to win the game. Well, for me, of course, I'll say it this way.
48:18It's been a tournament for goalkeepers. I also like the fairytale stories, especially in the early stages of the World Cup. Vosinha, the biggest of those stories, whether you talk about Ruf from Curacao, Nylund's performances for Norway, those are the things that will remain with me as a fully paid member of the Goalkeepers Union.
48:36Dan Thomas:I can't feel like it will allow it. Quickly from you, Jules.
48:39Julien Laurens:Everything that we've just seen, plus obviously Javier Aguirre telling Gordon to, you know, F you and then laughing in his face. That was my moment.
48:48Dan Thomas:It was a great moment, to be fair. That's one to definitely watch over again. All right, France against England today in the bronze final game. Spain and Argentina's odds as well to lift the trophy today. But we are also looking ahead to that game. We've done so all show, but today is the game between France and England. These are the odds heading into it. Not England our favourites. Why is that? They are not, Nadem. Are they for you though? This is what Tuchel said, isn't it? Well, obviously England playing against a side like France, who have that winning culture. The manager obviously says that they can't win this game.
49:21So I'm gonna go along with Thomas Tuchel and just take this all the way over here.
49:25Dan Thomas:All right I like the best thing that could happen for England is that England loses today. I don't know what's happening They don't want me to
49:37Join the boys here. No Yeah, it's These is a short journey for me.
49:44Julien Laurens:Oh, I mean it's all about DNA isn't it football
49:51Julien Laurens:Well, I was going to go with France. Come on. Come on, Kate. Do it. Come on.
49:59It's coming off. It's coming off. That's like a drum ball.
50:04Dan Thomas:Anyway, that's all we've got time for. Enjoy the Bruns final. We will be back tomorrow with more build-up for the big one tomorrow. Wait a minute. What about Spain Argentina? Oh, Spain Argentina. We're doing that now? Yeah. Okay. Sorry. I heard we've got to get out of the show. I know you already care about England, Kay. It's true, right? what about the animals prediction okay let's go with the animals predictions thank you guys there's the animal predictions okay okay oh wait a minute wait a minute that's that's that's aggressive right there oh oh oh change your pace change your pace oh okay Jules who've you got I've got
50:48Julien Laurens:I've got Spain. I know I said that and there was no scenario where England could lose to Argentina. But I said unless Thomas Tuchel messed it up and he did, I don't think Spain would mess it up. I'm going to have to go on the other side to Jules here. He's like 0-3 in his last few finishes. So just for that alone, I'm just going to pop myself over here. You know, I told you I love Argentina's heart, soul and the way that they play the game. Keep it moving. Keep it moving. My bracket! My bracket! My bracket is what matters! I'm with Jules. I'm 0-3. Let's go for 0-4. Come on, bring yourself over.
51:26I wanted to be Spain. You can't do it. You can't do it.
51:30Dan Thomas:You can't do it. You can't do it. You can't do it. You can't do it. You can't do it. You can't do it. You can't do it. You can't do it. You just can't be beaten. All right. Make sure to be with the ESPN FC throughout. We'll be building up to the final and there's lots streaming right now too. We'll find out how this one ends. See you next time.
52:01We'll see you next time.
