In short

ESPN FC World Cup recap and preview—France’s 3-0 win vs Iraq, Argentina’s 2-0 win vs Austria led by Lionel Messi, Norway’s 3-2 win vs Senegal to reach the knockout stage, plus discussion of Portugal/Ronaldo and England/Ghana.

Guests (backgrounds)

Dan Thomas (host). Xhaka Hislop (ESPN FC analyst). Stuart Robson (former player/analyst). Jan Åge Fjørtoft (former Norwegian striker). Alex Kirkland (ESPN reporter/transfer analyst).

Key claims

France looked “a well-oiled machine,” dominating despite rain/weather delay; Mbappé’s finishing plus midfield control (Rabiot) and rotating front line. Argentina are a “no-lose” contender; Messi’s brain/technique and team balance are driving results even as they’re older. Norway’s Haaland–Ødegaard partnership is the main threat; they can dream but may lack defensive strength for a deep run. Portugal should not start Ronaldo unless the team builds to get him service; England should keep high tempo vs Ghana.

Notable examples

Mbappé scored twice vs Iraq; Dembele also scored; Iraq’s poor “play out from the back.” Messi became World Cup’s all-time top scorer in Argentina’s 2-0 vs Austria (penalty missed, then scored). Norway qualified after Haaland brace vs Senegal (Holmgren-Pedersen, Ødegaard involved; late Senegal chance). Julian Alvarez transfer saga to Barcelona discussed (Atleti release clause/€500m stance).

1:20Welcome in to the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Dan Thomas, joined by Xhaka Hisslop and Stuart Robson. Well, it was a day in the World Cup where the stars shone once again later on the programme. We're reflecting on Erling Haaland getting two goals. But first, we focus on France. Just a reminder of how things stood for Kylian Mbappe going up against Lionel Messi. This was before today's matches. You may have heard that Lionel Messi broke the record. We'll talk about that a little bit later on, but let's focus first on Kylian Mbappe, who scored twice in France's 3-0 victory over Iraq. And the reason we're starting with France is that once again, Robbo, they put an informant that impressed.

2:01Yeah, they certainly did. I mean, they controlled the game. They looked dangerous every time they went forward. They started with a sort of formulated system, but they rotated a lot over the course of the game in the front areas. All the front players did quite well. Dembele scored his goal as well, which people said he didn't play particularly well in the previous game. Elyse was like he was in the first game. Not quite as good, but he still picked out those passes. And Barcola played on the left-hand side rather than Douai. So it was a good performance. Rabiot, again, was dominant in midfield.

2:29They never really looked in trouble, I didn't think. Ticken over nicely, aren't they? They really are. And I think part of the issue, if you can call it that, with France, with conditions and the rain and whether that would be a great leveller, but France never seemed to be in awful lot of trouble, even when the weather delay just came back out. While Iran played their part sitting in Mbappe's second goal, I thought France would easily be better for the two despite all the conditions that may have worked against them. Let's rock him in. Jan Argo Fjortov is with us, former Norwegian striker, to talk about Norway.

3:03But let's talk about strikers as a whole, shall we, Jan? Killing Mbappe with those moments that we've seen throughout his career where he can make a goal pretty much out of nothing, and that was the first today. Yeah, he can. And I mean, to be fair to them, Messi, Mbappé and Haaland, I mean, they got people around them. And it's like you feel that sometimes it's like in basketball when they need an important three-pointer, they look for the one to make that finish. And they have people around them, but take nothing away from them. Great finishers. And Mbappé, I mean, he's been criticised, he's been this and that.

3:39But it seems that when you see him now playing for France, what people think, ah, maybe it wasn't that popular in the squad and everything. Well, that seems to be looking good, doesn't it? Although Iraq, Iraq play to play out from the back, which is the worst I've ever seen ever. And that takes something because I don't like those situations. And then looking for Mbappé again, but it's fantastic. It's fantastic for us fans because we want the best ones to deliver, don't we? That's a brilliant point. We've watched the 7 ,000 games so far, but that's what you want. Stars to shine. The best players on the best tournament to do what they do best.

4:18Well, we've seen that club level. We then see them play in the international side. Now at the World Cup, as you said, you want to see those best players. That's what you're turning on the TV for. Yes, you want your country to win but you want to see the best players play well. And the first goal, I don't think he'd been involved in the game that much. The ball comes to him on the edge of the box and he smashes it with his left foot. It's a great finish. And then Jan is absolutely right. Irac try and play out from the back. He's one of the worst examples of trying to play out from the back that I've ever seen.

4:43And he has an easy finish. But, yeah, overall, Mbappe looked a good player. I'd still like to see him make more runs in behind. Because against the better teams, he's going to have to do that. But today, he didn't have to. How does France compare to the others, do you feel, Jan? Well, they were my favourite. I mean, it was not hard to pick them as a favourite. We are, Norway is now playing probably the second team in the last game. and probably that team could compete for the World Cup title as well, to be honest. I think France looking good. It seems like the players love to play together. And Robert was saying, I mean, all the quality they have all over the pitch.

5:21Dembele gets his goal. That is always good for the self-confidence. And you think players like this don't need self-confidence. They need to show each other. Do you think they got inspired from each other? Of course they do. What do you think Harry Kane tonight? He's sitting there and watching the other three get a brace. Do you think he will get a brace too? Of course he will. Of course he will. That's what they do, these people. Jack, it's interesting when we went into this tournament, the two favourites, and I think everyone agreed that were head and shoulders above the rest, were France and Spain.

5:52Spain turned it on, obviously, in the first half yesterday against Saudi Arabia, but there's still that feeling that they're very much reliant on Laminya Mal doing something special. And as much as you can argue, yeah, Kylian Mbappe's got four goals, you just feel that there's so much talent around Mbappe that can drive this team forward that if he has a bad game is it fair to say that you feel that others can bail him out yeah I think so listen coming into this tournament the discussion with Sydney I felt that France had the edge because of how deep their squad was they could put out two different 11s and go to semi-final in this tournament that's just how deep they were the only question was killing Mbappe and his defensive role and he seems to be playing that.

6:31Dechamp has understood that about Kylian Mbappe and been able to get the best out of this France squad with Mbappe in it. There's no question around the talent around Kylian Mbappe, the little shift of Dembele and Olise changing positions, Olise coming inside certainly reaped huge rewards in the last game and just continues. And right now, France just looks a well-oiled machine. Their big test will come on Friday against Norway. but they well by their standards have not been tested to this point they've just looked far too good we know a little bit more come Friday but as of right now it's just been smooth sailing What's interesting Giannis, the first time we've seen this tournament the weather delay, the weather is a big talking point going into this match given summers in the States how would that affect you as a player, what was it, two hours?

7:24Yes, about two hours delay wasn't it Well, it's injury I had a son playing in the USA in college and Duke and I knew all about these things happening sitting in Norway watching these small screens with one camera production. But no, I think that this is new, but these are so professional. If you see now when a bus arrive for the games, you see first the bus with players and then you see two buses coming with staffs. So something they have to prepare for them. And you saw straight away they went inside, they will do the warm up again. I think that they're so professional. I don't think that will affect them a lot, especially in these games in the group stage.

8:04I think it would be different in the knockout stages because we have seen now with this so-called drink rest or whatever that you call it in USA, that you can see that can affect the game. So coming into the knockout stages, I think that could play a small role. If you're in a role, you break it off for two hours, of course, that's going to be difficult to then to just go out and do the same thing again. You have a little knapsack? Is that what you do? Let me just say, I disagree with Jan in that I think these weather delays or these breaks are more impactful than Sydney France made it look. I think, and to Jan's point, in the knockout stages, it feels different because the competition is a lot more difficult.

8:52Things are a lot more balanced. but oftentimes when you have a lesser team as you did with iraq um you're looking for for little things that maybe prove to be a leveler uh a wet pitch is one of those things these long weather delays you know what it's like you're playing a game you're going well you want that to continue how often have we said teams don't want the halftime whistle or something if you saw when when when you're dominating and that's what france are doing and then you're playing a game you're soaking wet with the rain you have to go back into the dressing room sit down for two hours and then come back out now that's that's more difficult than it looks or certainly a whole lot more difficult than france made it look and i think that's the the difference here i think those circumstances are not ideal they just downright awful france just made it look easy because of of just how good they were despite that delay the thing that's difficult is not knowing, you know, how long is it going to be?

9:49When you first go in, is it going to be 10 minutes? So you sort of stay fairly fresh and you might carry on and have a little jog around. Are you staying fresh, Rob? What are you doing? If you're jogging around in the dressing room, you might think we'll be back out on the field in 10 minutes. Then it goes to half an hour and in the end it's two hours. So they have to go back out and do another full warm-up. And the people it might impact on are the slightly older players that might have one or two knocks. Because if you run flat as it was for 45 minutes and then you have two hours off, some of those players might stiffen up.

10:15More on France's group a little later on. in the show. Just a reminder Gab and Jules are here in the States to catch up with their adventures. Be sure to listen to the latest edition of the Gab and Jules show which is available now.

10:32Lionel Messi ain't bad eh? He missed a penalty but then he made up for it. Lovely opening goal. Second goal would come later on. These were the celebrations all around the world. Lionel Messi fans of course in all four corners of the globe as he becomes the top goal scorer in the history of the world cup contributing to argentina's two nil victory over austria most matches played most minutes played most tournaments played most goals most of most opposition scored against most goal contributions most matches won most player of the tournament awards it's not bad is it for Lionel Messi, who did it once again, Jan?

11:15Well, I'm in Austria. I worked in the studio today and they played Austria. And, you know, after the game, Ralf Ragnik, all the players, they said, why did they lose the game? Lionel Messi, Lionel Messi, Lionel Messi. He's just walking around. He's looking like he's in a jungle. He's like a lion just looking there. Where can I go? Which space? I mean, this guy is, I mean, is there a word that can describe him? I tried in the studio to compare him with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the composer from Salzburg, who was a genius, who had his operas in his head. He didn't have to write them down. I mean, this man is a genius.

11:56I mean, whatever you say. I mean, when I talked to my dad, he said, yeah, I saw Pelé. What a player he was. I will tell my grandchildren about a guy called Lionel Messi because he is turning in to be the best ever. It's pretty cool. Even for you, it's got to be cool. Yeah, and he's still got that ability to find space. Sometimes it's by allowing the opposition to have the ball and he'll just walk into space. Why teams don't go and pick him up while they're in possession, I'm never quite sure. But when it comes to him, defenders get tight. He can play one touch. He's clever with his one-touch passing.

12:30He's very aware of what's around him. And then when he does get the space, his technique is so good and he's understanding where the space is and how to bend balls around defenders and score goals. He's just an outstanding footballer, both with his technique, but also with his brain. It's scary to witness. It really is. Now, I'll speak for myself here. My concern with Lionel Messi coming into this tournament is three and a half years on from Argentina winning it. He's, of course, three and a half years older. you saw him in the Club World Cup last summer against European opposition and while he was good, he was not this good and then all of a sudden you see him in this Argentina shoot where it really matters and I think where Lionel Messi and Argentina look different from three and a half years ago is there is not that pressure of we have to deliver a World Cup for Lionel Messi or Lionel Messi needs to win that World Cup to convince daughters like me and is playing with their freedom and now all of a sudden this Argentina team, Lionel Messi, of course, at the center of it, are putting in performances that I certainly did not expect.

13:37And I think it's, or should be, worrying to everybody else in the tournament. I went on SportsCenter before the start of this tournament saying, don't worry about Argentina, write them off. They're old, Messi's passed it. Don't even have them in your bracket going very far. What a kiss of death that was. Well, yeah, but I think there are two points to take out of this because first of all, the very positive thing about Argentina, it's not just that they're looking for Messi, which is not a bad guy to look for because he will always deliver. But is there something about the way they make it automatically, the things they do?

14:11The first goal, they just let the ball go. They wait for Messi. Messi comes up and he sees that the goalkeeper, Schlager, is on his wrong foot. And he has seen that five seconds ago. But another fact today, and I have to speak for my Austrian friends, before the first goal, there was a big foul on Schalke. That goal should not have been given. But VAR and that situation didn't... I mean, you will probably end up Argentina winning anyway. They missed the penalty. They were the better team. But that is also a fact. But it doesn't take anything away from Messi. If you see the whole attack on the second goal, where Messi is starting everything, his movements, his touches, he is awareness where the ball ends.

14:56It's like he sees, I mean, chess player, call him whatever you want. I mean, he just sees things much, much, much earlier than any other player on this planet. So, at the start of the tournament, you had France, Spain, England, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina. Going to the bookies, that was the order. Where are Argentina in that order after these opening two matches, in your opinion, Shane? Right now, I think second. I still have France as my favourites. I put Argentina second. You touched on it earlier and you saw it in Spain's first game without Laminia Mal how decidedly average they look. Drew that first game and then, of course, put things right second time around.

15:39And that's my concern around Spain. Their reliance, if not over-reliance, on a Laminia Mal. Could you argue, obviously, Argentina over-reliance? Absolutely you could. but right now Laminia Mal comes into this tournament carrying a bit of an injury so there's that little bit of an asterisk around will he last the entire tournament I just feel and while Spain maybe are recognizing that that pressure around Laminia Mal around their delivery Argentina just played with house money and are just enjoying this tournament and putting in performances that, again, I certainly did not expect. Which is why I have them where they are, because they're on a no-lose trajectory.

16:24They can do it as it comes in this tournament. Where would you have them in my beautiful rankings? I'd have them second as well. Really? And I was with you right at the start of the season. Somebody asked me, were Brazil better than Argentina? I think, yeah, they are, because Argentina are four years older. They can't rely on Messi anymore. Surely he's not going to be the player that he was or has been for so many years. So, and they're working so hard, they look confident. They move the ball around well. They work around Messi. They know that he's not going to go and defend. So they have a shape that allows them to drift out to that side of the field when he's not defending.

16:56But when the ball is in front of them, they lock teams down one side. They get aggressive. They win it back. And that's when Messi comes back into play. It's not in their general build-up when they're building up from the back. He comes into play when they win the ball back. And that's what they've done well so far. Second best team in this World Cup, Jan? Well, did you see them? What did you see when they walked out before the game? You had Messi at the front and then behind them, Martinez, Romero. They look like a film. This like is like the big star is coming out and around him is the soldiers.

17:27It's like walking to the studio with me. Yeah, exactly. And they're just walking out there and they all are there to protect the jewelry in Messi. And I think that this balance of his brilliancy, we knew about that, but that it all so fit. Look at Romero, Lissandro Martinez. You can say whatever you want. They have a small team at the back. They won every header. I mean, I said before the game that maybe set pieces could be a good thing for Austria. They didn't get a chance. And they were like the smallest defenders around and they're winning everything. So that attitude, yeah, I have them up there.

18:03We'll see what happens. We're talking about some teams have been depending on their... Oh, Jamal for Spain. But, I mean, what happens if something happens to Messi? Do you play Messi in the third game, Jan? Pardon? Do you play Messi in the third game? I think we will talk more about that when Mbappé will play Haaland in a game that doesn't count for anybody. I think they will love to play. There's something called the golden boot. Two words. And they will love to play. They never go off, don't they? Big picture, you've already qualified, you're okay. No, I think all those three players will play.

18:36Really? I think they will because they want to score goals. Messi's not somebody who works that hard. So the only worry about it is he gets challenged in a bad tackle. But why even risk that? Because he wants to carry on the word momentum. He wants to go and be the best player in the world. Or he is the best player in the world. But he wants to go and score another couple of goals. He wants to have the best World Cup he possibly can have. Right. I'll agree in that Mbappe and Haaland want to score goals. and there's this golden boot race that's on. Messi for all the records that he holds, he never seems to be chasing records.

19:09And we often describe Messi as having this kind of childlike quality about playing the game. And I feel that while in the third game, common sense is wrestling on Messi, Lionel Messi, Celsius glory, I want to play. When have you ever seen him be taken off? He's never taken off. At Barcelona, he played all the time. He just wants to play. and it's kind of childlike but so refreshing But shouldn't a manager take charge of that? A manager's minutes because of his age? Who tells if leader Messi says we're calling Roberto Martinez a chicken for not having the ability to take Cristiano Ronaldo? You're taking him off for a different reason.

19:48We're talking about taking Ronaldo off because he's not playing well. You're talking about taking Messi off for arresting him and Messi saying I don't need the rest because I don't run around. I don't go and close people down. Give me the ball and I'll make something happen. Julian Alvarez came on as a second half substitute but it was his post-match interview which has caused headlines particularly in Spain asked about his future I don't think it's the right moment to talk get ready for this I don't want to hide I tried to be an honest person I spoke with the people at Atletico who I needed to speak with I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer I want to fulfil my dream Atletico responded get ready there is no amount of money to which Barca can buy Julian he will not be transferred to Barcelona Either they pay their release scores 500 million euros or there is no deal.

20:33We've already seen how Barcelona operates in the past, such as when Atleti were preparing for their Champions League tie against Juventus and Barca were promising commissions to Griezmann's sister, his family and the player himself. For more on this, to weigh in on the soap opera, Alex Kirkland is here. Very much a new twist. It's the first time we've heard Julian Alvarez say officially he wants out, Alex. exactly Dan he hadn't been explicit about wanting to leave until this point he sort of did a dance all of last season where he wouldn't say he wanted to go and he wouldn't say he wanted to stay either there was that one famous quote from him during the season when he was asked about his future and he said what do I know and you kind of think well if you don't know who does but he's come out now and made this statement now he's still left some doubts like you said he said I want to fulfill my dream.

21:23I think the reporter in the mix didn't quite hear him, didn't get to follow up and say what exactly is your dream? We understand it's Barcelona. The problem that Barcelona have got is that, as you say, Atleti are not happy with them. They've already come out publicly on social media and criticised them about the way they've conducted themselves in this pursuit. And the other big problem that Barca have got is that Real Madrid, remember, very publicly and mischievously made this 150 million euro bid for Julian, which was rejected. That sort of set the standards of what the kind of money that they've rejected already is.

21:56And so Barca aren't going to get Julian for less than that, but Barca can't reach that sort of level anyway. So I think we're going to see a standoff. I think it's going to be a long summer. I think prepare yourself. This is the saga that's going to run and run because, like I say, Barca can't afford that sort of money. They were thinking something like 100 million, and I bet they have already rejected publicly 150. So let's see where this goes. Let's see how far it goes. Let's see if Julian, you know, gets back after the World Cup and goes back to training. Or, you know, we've seen this before in these kind of standoffs, refuses to train.

22:27All these sort of possibilities are out there because right now it's hard to see exactly what the way out is. Alex, this can't be the first time that Barcelona have heard the news that Alvarez wants to leave. So given that, why sign Anthony Gordon? Yeah, I think this, in terms of Barca, I think this is almost, and this is why Atleti is so annoyed, a kind of a coordinated, the latest step in trying to make this move happen. You know, first they registered their interests, Azaleh came out and responded. Now it's, you know, the next step is the player comes out and says, I want to go. And then we take it from there and we keep trying to increase the pressure and keep trying to make this happen.

23:05Like you said, they spent big on Gordon. That was a bit of a surprise how much money they were willing to spend on Gordon. Of course, not the same kind of profile as Julian, not quite the same position, although they can play in the same position. Julian can play out wide. Gordon can play through the middle. Really, Gordon's more of a winger. Julian's more of a centre-forwards. But you're right, that's certainly... Spending that money on Gordon, committing that money to Gordon has restricts them a little bit in terms of what else they can do. They've still got significant money to spend potentially, I think, but maybe not the kind of money it would take to get Julian.

23:34Alex, we've seen Griezmann leave and come back. He was forgiven by the fans. We've seen fans burning Julian Alvarez's T-shirt. That's very productive, isn't it? today. Is there a chance that he can be forgiven by the supporters? I think it's a different relationship, though, because the relationship with Griezmann was much longer. And the fans have actually been pretty patient with Julian, I think. He underperformed last season. He delivered in moments, but not consistently. And the fans, they stuck with him. They were patient. Despite the fact that he wasn't committing his future publicly to the club, they kept supporting him.

24:08I think they'll be deeply, deeply unhappy with what he's come out and said now. Griezmann, that process took time. Even when he came back and he came back, like I say, more of a club legend than Julian is because he'd been there longer, scored more goals, delivered more on the pitch for Agletti. Even that for Griezmann took some time. Some fans had to be won over. Remember when Griezmann left at the end of the season, Griezmann came out again in his last big speech on the pitch and apologised once again for leaving. That shows how deep the scars were of that whole saga. Julian hasn't got nearly as much credit in the bank as Griezmann.

24:43I think it would be more... Nothing's impossible in football because we see these things happen all the time. But I think it would be really quite difficult, I think, for Julian to win back the sort of affection that Griezmann did. Alex, I'm thinking of the player power that there seems to be more maybe now. Last season, the big talking point was Isaac going to Liverpool. Similar sort of theme in La Liga as well. Yeah, and Atleti are furious. talking to ESPN colleagues tonight, they are deeply unhappy with Barca. There have been some suggestions they might even look at reporting Barca to FIFA for their pursuit of Julian because they feel like, and they made this very public, remember all those tweets that Atleti put out when the interest was first kind of made public a few weeks ago.

25:25Atleti are really unhappy with the way that Barca have conducted themselves. Atleti are in this difficult position, a big club, huge club, big fan base, very successful, but still next to Real Madrid and Barca, they don't have the same kind of power, the same kind of appeal and they still lose some of their best players to Barca. And like I say, it was really played out on social media with those tweets that Atleti put out when this interest was first registered. Just displaying how annoyed they were. But like I say, they've had to kind of deal with this over the years. You mentioned the Griezmann case.

25:57There are other cases as well. They have lost their best players. It was shown as well when Real Madrid came in and made that bid and how they responded as well. It's a position that Atleti find themselves in in terms of the hierarchy, I think in La Liga. Alex, am I being an idiot if I was to suggest this is a lot of fuss over a player who wasn't really great last season? I would never suggest that you are an idiot, Dan. I wouldn't ever say that. I wouldn't ever think of that. Yeah, yeah. On air. I mean, you're right in terms of his performance. You're right. You're right. He wasn't great. Like I said, he had flashes.

26:30He had moments. He had some of the brilliant goals that he scored in big games. But often, Yeah, he was underwhelming and he was a big part of the reason that Avetti in the end couldn't put together a proper challenge for big trophies because their star player didn't deliver consistently and Diego Siblioli, the coach, defended him time and time again. When that criticism came in, the coach, and like I said, the fans as well, I think, they stuck with Julian and that's why I think this will really hurt. How much of an upgrade is it for Lewandowski who is veteran, past it, he's left obviously. Julian Alvarez come in to take that role?

27:04He's not as good a finisher as Lewandowski. He's more agile than Lewandowski was in the last two seasons. And can he fit into the role as the out-and-out centre forward? Because I always think he drifts out into wide areas at times, drops into midfield. But this won't end up well for anybody. It never does. You mentioned it perfectly. Isaac, last season. Newcastle knew they were eventually going to sell him, but they almost made sure he wasn't training. He was saying he wasn't going to train. Then when he goes to Liverpool, we'll pay over the odds for him. He can't play well because he's unfit, and then when he does play, the crowd are thinking, we've just spent a fortune on this player.

27:36This will go play on for quite some while and nobody will come out of it well, unfortunately. Just a reminder, as we say, thank you very much. Alex, you're in Houston, yeah? Portugal tomorrow? Yes, in Houston. Listen to Roberto Martinez speak just now in a presser and going to the Portugal game tomorrow to see if Cristiano Ronaldo can score some goals. Let's see. Roberto Martinez, I imagine, said that Cristiano Ronaldo has told me he's starting. yes he defended cristiano shocking that shocking development there yeah thank you very much alex much appreciated uh just a reminder to keep up to date with all the latest transfer rumors that are coming out of this world cup be sure to go to transfer talk over on the website

That means that Norway qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup. They made us sweat a little bit at the end. They're in control of the game for most of the time. Erling Haaland getting a brace, but Saar would score later on to add to his earlier goal, but they couldn't find the equaliser and it is Norway who then advanced along with France into the knockout stages.

30:33The question now is who will finish top of the table. Jan-Ager-Fjortov, where do you want to start? Well, I think we could start with the end because they were looking for the equaliser in Senegal. They had a big, big chance there at the end at the corner, It could be 3-3. But this is a great success for us. We haven't been at the World Cup for 28 years. For us to go to the next stage now is fantastic. And let's see how it is. What's the best thing to be number one or number two in the group? It's hard to say. Now I think that the thing is that we can meet Sweden as our neighbour, maybe. But I think this was a great performance of Norway.

31:11Getting the 1-0 lead. But Holmgren-Perdersen is the most unlikely player to score ever for Norway. getting us the 1-0. And the rest was all about Martin Ödegor and Erling Haaland. Erling Haaland getting his fourth goal. It's his 18th goal in the last 21 games for Norway. 59 goals in 52 games for Norway. And Martin Ödegor, that was a bit criticized after the first game. And there were some pundits in Norway said he shouldn't play. And the national coach said he will always play. Finished. And then they tried to get another question in. And he said he will always play. And the way he put Erling up for that first goal of Erling, the second goal of Norway, that is only the two of them that can do.

31:53And I think as long as Norway have this Haaland-Ordegaard thing, we can dream. I mean, I've got sometimes nightmares of our defence, but they keep dreaming. And the second goal Erling scored as well. He lost the ball first on a cross and he kind of shook his head. And then he thought, no, wait, there could be another cross. And yes, Patrick Berg put it in on his right foot. And of course he scored. So it's just like we're living the dream in Norway now. And may it continue for a long time. The commentator brought it up in the opening 20 minutes. He touched the ball two or three times. And then bang, two goals, win 3-2.

32:34Similar story with Erling Haaland. We've said that for club and country time and time again. Erling Haaland is just as pure finish as you could hope for. and then that understanding with Odegaard as it comes to the fore, you see him you see him shine as he does he is such a complete striker, is a challenge quick in behind tall, physical, strong in the air doesn't get overly involved as you say Dan but that doesn't seem to stop him or his understanding of what's happening around him he's had 23 touches, he's scored two goals, in the previous game he had 20 touches and scored a couple of goals. Yeah.

33:15Somehow, Norway and Manchester City, when he's playing, have to find ways to get him more of the ball because if he can score two goals with 20 touches and two goals with 23 touches, if he got the ball to him 40 times, surely his goals would go up and up. He's the most dangerous striker, in my view, in world football, in terms of he can run with pace and power. There was one header in the first half. He hardly touched the ball. He leapt above the player at the far post and headed it down. I think when you do a leap, Robbo. And I just thought, you know, he's got so much, so many attributes and he can be so devastating.

33:47I'd just love to see him involved in the game more. And he would then be the world's best centreboard by a long, long way. Jan? But I think it's a misunderstanding that he's not involved in a game because he's on his runs all the time. And touches are not, I understand where Robbo is coming from. I understand what he's saying. But I mean, his goal stats kind of kill every proof of that is wrong, you know. And I see if you saw the game, he missed that big chance. That was not typical Erling to miss that. But he hit the post and then he got a cross and he headed down. And Mendy, it was a good save from Mendy.

34:20But Erling is doing these runs all the time. He's just waiting, waiting, waiting. Then he goes. Waiting, waiting, waiting. Then he goes. That is the most, if we talk more involvements, then he's just going for those runs all the time. And then it's up to the players. If that was used to be Kevin De Bruyne or Bernardo De Silva or Martin Odegaard for Norway. That's what it's all about. And I think that we just have to get used to this, that this guy, he won't touch the ball, but he will just always score goals. I think we can wish whatever. I just wish him to score goals. And these runs, he goes on these runs all the time.

34:57If you follow him through a whole game, he's always looking for that space two, three, four times. And then the fifth time it happens. So I'm not sure that he will ever change. Which is my point, Jan, is if he's making all the runs, and I've seen it, as you say, he's making all these runs and trying to get down the side of defenders in behind defences. It's the players on the ball that don't see the runs and don't play often enough. You know, when he was at Dortmund, I saw him touch the ball far more times than he has done at Manchester City and for Norway. Very good point, Robo. and sometimes when I see Manchester City, and I know that frustrates Team Haaland sometimes because when you see at Manchester City, I mean, if you see the number he has scored for Manchester City, that is a team that doesn't play a lot of counterattacks, which is his strength.

35:44They don't make a lot of crosses because Dokus and the wingers sometimes take too many touches and every striker in the world wants to have the early cross. So that is a fair point. But I think that you have to find a balance with that. Because that's what you get from Erling. What we've seen in this World Cup, though, is that he's much more involved in the game. He will win his duels. He can keep the ball up front. And you saw that against Iraq from the first minute. He was much more involved. The friendly before the World Cup against Morocco, he touched the ball four times. Four times. So I think that is just the way we have to get used to.

36:22And I'm with you, Robbo. They sometimes, especially at Manchester City, don't get enough out of him. should I put it this way, if he played for Arsenal he would probably score 100 goals this season I think he's saying get rid of him Man City should, or he should leave Man City against someone else, that's what Jan would say exactly Robbo my job, that's fine Jan, you weren't very positive when it came to Norway having a deep run within this competition, you talked about the defence and the frailties and these people talking about Norway being dark horses just need to calm down a little bit, from what you've seen in these opening two matches are you feeling more optimistic yes uh but i won't say that i i was negative i said that we were not the dark horses to go all the way because in the qualification we managed to kind of hide our weaknesses and if you saw today as well against senegal the the the 2-1 goal came out of nothing you can't do that the 3-2 came out of nothing you can't do that if you want to go all the way.

37:22Having said that, now with six points after two games, this is a team with two or three match winners in there. Noosa hasn't got started yet. You have Bob who can get started. Sirloot we know get goals and Martin Erdegor and Erling Haaland. So now we're getting to the knockout stage. I think there is a chance that we could, in different games, we can beat anyone. But I don't think that we have the strength all over to kind of be up there with the usual suspect to go all the way. Jan says Norway can beat anyone. Is that what he said? Absolutely said that.

38:04I can't see it. I know that's not what Jan said. As good as they are going forward, I just feel at the back they get found out. Their score goes, but they concede too many. I see them getting maybe two games in three knock-around. I really don't see them getting much further. But the good thing for them was, and as Jan said, Odegaard, that's the best I've seen him play for quite some while. The last few matches at Arsenal at the end of the season, when the ball came into and he was tightly marked, he lost it or he passed it backwards or went even deeper to get it so he could pass it square and get an easy passing.

38:40Today, he was playing further forward. Whenever the ball broke, he was looking to get turned, run past the first player, and then he could look for those passes down to the side players or the centre forward. He was brilliant today, Erdogan. How big do you go against France? Well, it's interesting. I haven't seen the interviews after the game. What the Stoller-Solbach can do? Remember, we are not like a team that's been to many World Cups. So this rotation thing and be ready for the knockout stage in the third game, we haven't done that before. France has probably can call some old coaches and say, what did you guys do?

39:12We are not so much used to that. I think that I know Stolo Zobac and one of my former teammates. I just got a feeling that maybe we'll do two or three changes to get people. There were some cramps at the end there. So maybe some of the players will get a rest. But I think he will keep the core of the team. This is not a social club that everyone will get the same opportunity. I think that's important for Norway as an inexperienced World Cup nation to just keep the momentum. How big do you go if you're France? I still think there's an opportunity quite clearly for Norway. If they win the game, they win the group.

39:49And there's a value to that. In this group, I, whoever finishes top, finishes a third-place finisher from four or five groups. If you finish a runner-up, you're likely to face Ivory Coast going forward. And that's a big difference in terms of who you face in the first knockout round. how deep you go in this tournament. At the same time, you're playing well, you've got momentum, you don't want to tinker with that too much. I think both managers will make a couple of changes, but I'm not expecting a whole lot more than that. Do you concur? I think France will probably make four or five changes. OK.

40:23Because they can change. They've got a big squad, so they can change. Le Buffon. Yeah. They also changed one of their full-backs today. They changed a midfield player. Kone came in for Chouamaini. Chouamaini can come back into the side. The left-back can come back into the side. instead of Dina again. Due can come back into the team. So I think they'll make four or five changes. Norway, I think, will go with probably their best team. Good man, Jan. Thank you very much. What time is it with you there? Goodness me. I have to have a little quarter to five, so I think I go to bed, guys. You're looking great on it, Jan, to be honest.

40:51Compared to Robbo, do you, me? I'm getting very used to make-up in the morning. Let's just remind you how Group I stands. Nighty-night, Jan. Six points apiece Senegal, Norway or France, Senegal, Iraq face off. They'll be hoping that three points will qualify for the knockout stages if we see a winner in that tie.

41:59Tuesday's schedule sees Colombia take on DR Congo that's the late game Panama against Croatia England take on Ghana but we'll discuss Portugal against Uzbekistan Portugal very underwhelming in that draw against DR Congo inevitably all the talk going into this tie is about whether Cristiano Ronaldo will start Roberto Martinez says that he will Alex Kirkland was at that press conference He defended his captain, saying that he is key to this team going forward. And we have discussed it at length since that 1-1 draw, Robbo. Have you changed your mind at all? Do you think that Ronaldo should start?

42:38I don't think he should start. And I wouldn't have started him at the beginning of the tournament either. I don't think you can play with somebody who doesn't even attempt to run him behind as the sender forward. But if he is going to play, then you have to build the team around him. So otherwise the opposition will hold a high line and he can't get him behind. They can't get him behind. So they've got to get wide players and midfield players that are going to run beyond him. He's got to try and link up the play and get crosses into the box because that's where he can be at his most dangerous.

43:04But in the last game when crosses did come into the box, I didn't see that spring that he once had. I didn't see that movement across the front of defenders. If you stand in the six-yard box to the penalty spot all game when crosses are coming, eventually the ball will come to you, like it did for Ayathebal twice in the Spain game. Well, I think Ronaldo will score. but Ramos, if he was playing in the same position and did the same things, he would score as well and he would offer more in terms of hold up play and runs in behind but Martinez is going to play him. What do you do, Sam? Fernando Santos left Ronaldo out at the latter stages of the 2020 World Cup.

43:39Four years on, I don't know how Ronaldo is expected to be better. I've kind of always figured that Roberto Martinez would not leave him out just didn't have maybe the presence within this Portugal dressing room. and would play him. I have never thought of Ronaldo as a starter in this Portuguese, a very talented Portuguese team, if you truly have ambitions to go very deep in this tournament. And the longer he stays out there, the narrower those opportunities get for Portugal. They've got such a wonderful team. When you look at the PSG midfield players, you look at Bernardo Silva, you look at Bruno Fernandes.

44:22all these players that are outstanding players but something's holding them back at the moment and that's the centre forward, the player that at one point was the best goal scorer they'll win tomorrow there I think they will, yes if they don't meanwhile England were so brilliant weren't they, in that victory against Croatia in the opening round, they'll be looking to continue that sort of form as they take on Ghana in the second tie of their group, England favourites to win this one, you expecting more of the same? Yes. I wouldn't say they had their problems defensively. Well, they were two very good goals.

44:57Yeah, that's true. The problem they had in the first half with Croatia was that Croatia started to hold the ball and they weren't quite sure whether to close them down or drop off, which England have always had little moments like that. But overall in the second half when they played how I think England should play with a high tempo, pressing the ball, getting the ball forward quickly, getting midfield players running beyond Harry Kane, they looked a good side. And if they play at high intensity, they'll be too good for going. Yeah, I agree with Rob. I just think England dominated this group, as maybe you expect coming into the tournament.

45:27Take what you like of the Croatia performance. I think Senegal, again, just kind of England make easy work of... Of Ivory Coast. Oh, not Ivory Coast, Ghana. Sorry. What did I say? Semenyo is the player that could cause some problems, but that's one player. And they've got a couple of other decent players. But Semenyo is the one that might just give them one or two. We're England in my rankings. So we've got France-Argent. Really? Third? Third? No, I'd go... No, I'd go third. Above Spain? I'm going to put them above Spain at the moment. Why? Because I think they can play with more intensity. I think they can dominate games.

45:58I think they can get more balls in the box. I think they can play a style of football that will cause most teams problems. Yeah, I go third because of Spain's poor performance in the first half of their first game. I can't remember who it was against now. Spain's first game, Capo Verge. Oh, there you go. So because of that, I dropped being down below England for now. What's interesting is the speculation in England about Saka and his fitness. There isn't kind of that sense of alarm, I feel, from the outside looking in if Saka plays or not. Really, it's all about Harry Kane. Is that fair? Yes, in terms of because then you're going to have a different centre forward if you don't play Harry Kane.

46:42Yes. Whether it be Ollie Watkins or Ivan Toney. Saka, Madiweke has done well when he's played. You know, Saka's a good player and he's excellent coming in on his left foot. Madiweke can go both ways. He's got a bit more pace than Saka. Different sort of player, but they play on the same side and the team won't be that much more, won't be worse with Madiweke in it. Rashford coming off the bench again. Some calling for him to start, considering what he did when he came on. Certainly made more of an impression than Gordon. And Gordon wasn't great. Yeah, I think you play that hot hand. If Gordon doesn't play well in that first game you've got to make changes.

47:23You can't be afraid to make those changes this early in the tournament. Good performance in the first game I think has given you momentum, given you the opportunity to make these changes early on with an eye for who's playing well as you go deeper in this competition. And Tuchel has shown, he's willing to make those big decisions. He's willing to upset players if that's what it takes in an effort to get it right. I'll be surprised if Rashford doesn't start. 49:05Right, should we talk about an extra time question that we had, which I'm intrigued about. I'm not sure if you're involved in this debate, but Nadam got really angry with Kieran for describing England as we. And this is the question that we've had about it. Shaq and Robbo, is it annoying when fans say we when talking about their club or country? Is it more annoying when Dan says it referring to England? Where do you stand on the we debate? Supporters can say we, but not pundits or presenters cannot say we. You're not representing that club. You're not representing that team. And I always believe that pundits and presenters shouldn't really have support.

49:46Isn't it nice to show the kind of human side of us? No, not really. So objective. It's incredible. But it's gone too far in England. Robbie, you're really serious about this. There's people in clubs, you know, and Man Utd being one, some of the pundits are on the gantry jumping up and down when a goal goes in. Right. They can't do that. They should be neutral when they're commentating or co-commentating on a game or sitting in a studio. You can't talk about it being we. Sorry about that. Burley said we during the Scotland talk, by the way. I don't have a problem with it. Of course you don't, Shaq, because you're a nice bloke.

50:22I think, well, to your point about commentation jumping up and down, I think, despite it all, we all try to be fair and balanced in how we analyse things. I think one of the interesting things, especially with fans, you refer to we where the team wins. Whenever he loses, they were awful. All of a sudden, you've distanced yourself. They were terrible. What's funny is the amount of abuse that Stevie gets from Liverpool fans, given his status at the club. Yet, when you watch a game with him, he couldn't be more passionate for Liverpool. Absolutely passionate. But then it just shows that he's very objective.

50:58The human side. The human side, Dan. There is quite a big human side to Stevie. No time to talk about that. Goodbye.

51:10Welcome in then to the latest edition of Extra Time. Oh, we had the rain delay. Robbo had a little sleep, didn't you Robbo? Definitely. No, I didn't. Definitely, that was amazing. Not during the rain delay. I had a sleep in between the shows I was meant to do, which was one at 12 o 'clock this morning and the next one at 2 o 'clock. Where did you have that sleep? Watching the big screens, but there was nothing on the big screens at the time. And were you just alone in the room? I was alone in the room. And you had a little sleep a couple of days ago as well. Well, let me tell you, I got home last night to the hotel at half past 12.

51:38For some reason, I can't sleep. I didn't sleep from half past 12 to six o 'clock. I thought I'd better go to the gym. So I went to the gym, had my breakfast, and then went back to bed for two hours, and then had to come to work. Five hours? You were just in your room going, I should be asleep. Well, that's what... Is it the adrenaline of the great shows that we do? I'm an insomniac, which is not a good thing to be. But then, notice there, he said I got home to the hotel. It's kind of like the wee thing. Oh, well, it's been two and a half weeks. Oh, Mrs. Robson thinks, oh, you live in us elsewhere now.

52:09She'd like it to be the case. Home, is it? Robert just declared he's an insomniac. Like, it's a really serious, I'm insomniac. You know, I can't get to sleep. I sleep and work. If you look it up, it's quite serious. What are you trying to do to help yourself get to sleep? Listen to the show? That would help. I listen to you. What were you going to suggest there? Have you tried? Have they just stopped yourself? No, I haven't. Oh, boy. I've tried medication. It doesn't work. Is it because you're just kind of switched on? Like, you've just... But everything that they say is the opposite to me. So I have to have the curtains open when they say you want it pitch black.

52:52As soon as it's pitch black, then I come, I start thinking about it. Really? So I have to have the curtains open. I go to sleep more when the television's on. As soon as the television gets turned off, I wake up. It's bizarre. Really?

53:07I do everything opposite to what they will tell you to do. Right, and you're sitting next to the man who could fall asleep anywhere. He's fell asleep at a walk-up. Oh, but I can sleep in the afternoon. I did not fall asleep. I did not fall asleep. Thank God. Incredible. What he does, he gets on his phone like this and then he drops off, doesn't he? Oh, boy. Oh, God. Is playing out of the back worth it if teams are not at the top of their game? We saw this in the Iraq game against France. No, absolutely not. Stop playing out from the back. I don't get this. I really don't. And I'm not sure what the purpose of it is sometimes.

53:47You know, the whole purpose, when I was taught as a youngster and when they were trying to get away from long ball football, was that you were trying to get better quality into the front players. Still get it to them quickly, but you were trying to build it up the field. So when it was played into the front players, they weren't fighting for balls around their chest. They were getting it rolled into. Now they play it around the back and play it. I'm not sure what the purpose of it is sometimes. You know, do it for the sake of it. I'm trying to remember which game I was watching yesterday. Goalkeeper had played out to the wing-back.

54:12Wing-back played back to the goalkeeper. And he would just launch it. Now it gets it forward. It's kind of coming forward. It provides more room further on. But they were, you know, they were not trying to pass out the back. They were just like, hey, come on down and we just launch it. I'm like perfect. I don't know why you try to do a whole lot more than that. The worst thing is... What happens when you're at home with Mrs Robson? Do you have Kirk and you're like she's asleep? You're like, wait! Well, there's the problem. Put on the cereal. There's the problem. She wants it pitched back, so we have to have it pitch black because I always do what she says.

54:48Of course I do. So you're just lying there. Yeah, I'm just lying there. I think about things. Then I'll get up and go downstairs for a little while and go on the computer to try and do some... I try and get work done. So if I've got to do work, I think, well, rather than when I haven't got time during the day, I'll get it done now. Wow. Which people will say, well, now you're getting light from the thing. Yeah. But that starts to get my eyes to go tired. I'll try and go back to bed and try and get to sleep. And then, it's not happening, so I'll go back down again, watch a bit of telly, start to go to sleep, go back upstairs into bedroom and then wake up again.

55:18And if any insomniacs are watching, they could just listen to that and that puts us looking at that. Oh, dear. I've spoken to you. I've tried to open up and tell you my problems. I thought you'd be a Samaritan, but no, not at all. But it just all makes sense now as to why you're so grumpy. I don't think I'm grumpy, Dan. You know far well. Sarcastic and try and wind you up, but I'm not grumpy. Since Martinez is going to start Ronaldo anyway, should he start Gael Felix too? The two spent all year together with J.F. setting up Cristiano Ronaldo and leading the league in assists. Could that partnership help get the most out of Ronaldo?

55:59This was, of course, in the Saudi Arabian League. You need to have legs around Ronaldo. If you do start Ronaldo, you need to have legs around him. I'm not sure that João Felix is the one you rely on to cover Ronaldo's ground. And all the players they've got in the team, they've all been brilliant players for all season. Joao Felix, as we saw in La Liga for many, for two or three seasons, he just didn't perform. He had one or two good games, he went on loan to Barcelona, didn't perform there, couldn't get in the team. When he was at Atleti, he couldn't get in their team. So I don't think he gets in this Portuguese team.

56:32The last two questions are the same questions really. Who will end up as the outright highest goalscorer by the end of the World Cup? And who finishes with the golden boot? So, let's go for it. Messi is on five, Mbappe's on four, Haaland's on four. Well, I think France are going to win the World Cup. OK. So I'm going to go with Mbappe. Mbappe. I concur for the same exact reason. Will he break the record as well? Yes. What would you wink at me for, Dan? Because I'm thinking. Is that a little twit? When he's thinking, half his bridge shuts down. So Messi's on 18, Mbappe's on 16. Yeah, no, I think they'd be fairly close.

57:10I think Mbappe is now one behind Because he matched Ronaldo I feel he was three behind After the Argentina game Right I think And then obviously So Mbappe If you could just have a producer coming out here No he's gone home He's like He's knowing something I can't put a producer

57:36He's an arse of support So you be careful You don't want to upset anybody coming from you. ESPN FC, what time are you in tomorrow? Oh, no, I'm in. Three o 'clock in the morning. One o 'clock, yes. We're going to upset it. It's all right. This is a very serious condition. Yeah, so you're making light of it. Yeah, I know. And I apologise for that in advance. Shaka, don't laugh.

58:32We'll be right back.
