0:00Alejandro Moreno:From 30 for 30 podcasts.

0:09Kay Murray:Brian Pata, senior defensive lineman from Miami, gunned down. The key to this case, it's Brian. An hour before he died, he was on the phone arguing with somebody. This might be a hit. You want the truth. They just want a conviction. Being placed under arrest. We had a killer amongst us. Murder at the U. Listen now.

0:33Kay Murray:Welcome to the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Dan Thomas, joined by Stevie Nicholl. I'll tell you what, we'll kick things off in La Liga today. Barcelona taking on Villarreal. It was a very impressive performance from Laminya Mal, his first ever professional hat-trick. The second goal, by the way, is absolutely stunning from the 18-year-old. And it's a win now that puts Barcelona, for the moment, of course, with Real Madrid in action on Monday. Four clear at the top of the table. Really interesting open frank interview from Lominion Mahal after the game. In particular he said he had a thousand things on his mind in the last couple of months.

1:10Kay Murray:Sid Lowe was with us. That very much stood out Sid. You were being mischievous today weren't you? You seemed a bit naughty from the start.

1:19Alejandro Moreno:Yeah, well I think I've rediscovered what I had as a kid, which was being happy playing football. These last few weeks I haven't been myself. It was even hard to be happy doing what I love most and little by little that smile is returning. Why was it hard for you to be happy doing what you love the most? Well I think it's been a difficult season. The groin among a thousand other things that were on my mind made it tough. But anyway, I'm trying to get back to being myself and give the Barca fans what they deserve.

1:50Kay Murray:Really interesting stuff there. We welcome Sid Lowe to the conversation. said those million things on his mind. Yeah, absolutely. That's the really striking part of it, isn't it? That Moy asks him there about the idea of him being kind of a naughty player, a daring player, a dynamic player. And he said, yeah, and I wanted to go back to being that kid that enjoyed playing football in the last few weeks. That hasn't been the case. It's been a difficult season with the groin issue. But then, as you say, that next line and a thousand things more and those things that are to do with the pressure, those things that are to do with the demands of professional football, all of the exposure that you have to go through.

2:28Kay Murray:We should never forget. Obviously, we can forget maybe when he turns 19, but he's an 18-year-old. This is a guy that was in the Spain squad, that won the European Championships at 16. This is a guy that you said it then. This is, what did you say, 60 years since a player this young has scored a hat-trick. And yet it feels like it's been a long time coming because we've been watching him for so long because he's been exposed to this kind of pressure so young. and I thought it was very, very telling that that comment post came about a happiness or a comfort or a sense of being himself that just hasn't been there for a big chunk of this season.

3:01Kay Murray:And in a way, I imagine it's quite difficult to say that for him. And I kind of applaud the fact that he brought it up. And I think maybe it just gives us a little bit of a reminder as well, doesn't it, about how we deal with him, how we analyse him, how we kind of judge him. And judging itself is a difficult word, isn't it? but how we judge his performances and him as a young man who's still only 18 years old. Sid, just give us an insight. Obviously, you live in Spain. We're on the outside looking in. We see glimpses of it. But the scrutiny he's under is quite literally 24-7, isn't it? Yeah, and I think what happens as well, Dan, is that I think that scrutiny shifts.

3:38Kay Murray:And it changes in, how do I put this? It changes in focus. I think it changes in tone. And I think it changes in the sense of whether or not you're on his side. So, to give you the best example of this, as I've just said, he goes to the European Championships as a 16-year-old. And he is the kid that everybody loves. He turned 17 just before the final, and he is Spain's boy. He is the one that everybody wants to celebrate, everyone wants to support, everyone gets excited about, and everyone says, could well be that in the next three, four, five years, the best player in the world is Spanish. He's one of ours.

4:11Kay Murray:And I think that brings with it a huge amount of responsibility. It brings with it a huge amount of pressure. An example of this is I went to the first game that Spain played after the European Championships in Murcia. The Luminium Arr shirts outnumbered the other shirts by absolutely miles. And this is still at the beginning of his career. And so he's got this pressure of being the one that everybody loves, that everyone's looking up to, and everyone is putting pressure on to perform. But then something else happens. Of course, he goes back and starts playing club football. Now, what does that do?

4:42Kay Murray:As you know, Dan, the way the divide is in Spain, it splits a little bit. That sense of everyone being on his side. And now, of course, you've got a big chunk of the country kind of deciding they're going to dislike him, deciding there are certain things about what he does that irritate them, deciding that this is now back on the agenda. So that agenda, which initially is full of pressure, but is largely positive, then has that negative side to it as well. Now, we saw this very clearly, didn't we, before the Classico and during the Classico and Arthur the Classico back in October, when Laminya Marl had made a couple of slightly ill-advised comments and he'd been trying to joke about the idea that, oh, Real Madrid are always cheating, they're always stealing off you, you know, we'd love to give some back to them.

5:19Kay Murray:And of course, that turned people against him. And so you're seeing, I think, the weight of pressure, the degree of exposure, as you say, that sense of it being 24-7, but also the shifting focus of that pressure. So you've got a pressure which is for him to perform and to be the golden boy and to live up to everyone's expectations. And then the pressure that says, actually, I've now got people who are sort of looking for me to fail, are sort of looking to have a go at me, are sort of looking to not like me, even if not at a conscious level, at some subconscious level. And, you know, I can't stand here and tell you what that's like.

5:48Kay Murray:I can't even really begin to imagine what it's like, but it must be pretty hard at times.

5:54Alejandro Moreno:You know, one of his biggest problems is going to be when he's not physically 100%. That's what's going to turn into the mental pressure because when he's 100 % fit and flying, all the outside noise and whether he says the wrong thing at the wrong time, he can get away with that because he can step on the field and he knows when he's 100%, he can produce at a certain level, which is miles away from most players in the world, let's be quite honest. The problem he will have is when he's not 100 % and he's carrying, whether it's an ankle injury or whether it's his groin and he's not producing, he has to figure out how to live with that himself and not be listening just to the outside noise.

6:46Alejandro Moreno:Because he's 18 and he's not... Listen, in terms of football, he's mature. But in terms of as a person, he's still got a lot of maturing to do. You think what we were like when we were 18.

7:00Kay Murray:Exactly. It's a completely different world. You think you played with some of the best players in the world during your time, Stevie. You're in a situation, though, where they could still go out. They still had a bit of a life. You knew kind of safe havens to go. Because of phones and cameras and everything being so accessible now, it's impossible, isn't it, for him to go anywhere without any scrutiny? And inevitably, at such a young age, that's got to take its toll.

7:24Alejandro Moreno:A hundred percent. Again, you're talking about how he can't go anywhere. it's okay sitting in a house or not being able to go anywhere when things are great because you don't think about it you're not thinking about you certainly don't think oh I was fantastic yesterday and I scored three goals but when you're not fantastic and you have no way of releasing the pressure you have to sit in a cage basically sit in your living room in your house your flat whatever it is and as much as you don't think about how great you've been the day before or if you're bad and you don't play well, that festers in your head.

8:01Kay Murray:To the point that Sid, mate, how impressive is this him coming out and being very honest about it?

8:07Alejandro Moreno:Oh, hugely. Most people clam up, which is the worst thing you can do. Yeah. So the fact that he understands the problem that he's got is halfway to fixing it. Now, I say he's halfway because he is only halfway. he still has to mature mentally as a person in order to be able to sit in the house and not be thinking about it and being able to push it aside yeah understanding that it'll take me a little bit of time to get back to 100 and then i'll be fine uh this is all very serious but the fun element

8:40Kay Murray:of it there's nowhere in the world as i said at the moment that you prefer to watch than laminya No, absolutely. I mean, look as well, and this feeds into this. So earlier in the season, there was a period when Luminium Arles was celebrating his goals by placing a crown onto his head. And I remember kind of thinking about that phrase, heavy is the head that wears the crown. But it felt like Luminium Arles didn't mind, that he wanted that pressure because he was playing so well, because he knew he was so good. He was thinking, you know what? Let them talk. And remember that comment that he said, which came back to bite him a little bit around the time of the classical.

9:12Kay Murray:and he'd made that remark about how people can talk and for as long as I'm winning, they can't say anything to me. And the problem is, of course, as soon as you don't win, then those people will be waiting. And I think that, again, and that feeds into his own mindset, not everything else. It's just like, you know, if I'm not playing well, then yeah, this kind of noise, I actually realise now that this isn't fun. But as you say, it's about getting back to that fun thing. And that comment he made today about wanting to be the person that just enjoyed playing football. And as you say, when he's playing well, Now, I can't say for sure how much he enjoys it, although talking to Moy Jodens there, he was saying that he did, but we enjoy it.

9:47Kay Murray:And maybe there's a bit of us that just sort of take a step back and say, you know, thanks. And we join, Stevie, in an era where you feel there aren't as many as these kind of superstars. No. We talk about teams, we talk about tactics, we talk about organisation. But that's why we watch the game. For that second goal today, just leaves you going, Blumenech is good.

10:07Alejandro Moreno:Yeah, as you said, you sit and watch that and you go, Who else today can do that? And I can't come up with an answer to that. And for somebody like him as well, he's at the perfect team. And he's got the perfect manager. And he's playing with the perfect players that want to do the same things as him. They all, particularly the forward players. I mean, look at Rafinha. All he wants to do is open his legs up and get striking that left peg. And Yamaha, all he wants to do is take people on. Knock me down, skip past them. And then whip balls into the back of the net. And so he's in the absolute perfect place with a perfect team and the perfect manager to continue doing what he's doing.

10:46Kay Murray:One aside away from Luminium Al, Sid, and an obvious one. If Barcelona are going to do well this season, obviously they're still competing in the Champions League, in La Liga. They desperately need Pedri to stay fit. Yeah, they do. Yeah, absolutely. And I think everybody knows that. you talk about the quality of Lumi and Yamal we talked a lot obviously when we analysed him tactically about the high line but it's about Pedri who keeps the game flowing the way they want it to be there was a really interesting interview actually Dan this Saturday in one of the Spanish papers with Comissania the Villarreal midfielder and he talked about how the thing with Barcelona is that yes you know there's a high line but it's all about whether you can escape the pressure to be able to play that pass and all about whether you can get onto the ball enough to be able to play the pass and that Pedri is a key reason why you can't.

11:35Kay Murray:Now, we look at Pedro and we look at the gloriously, the smooth touch that he's got. But I think we sometimes overlook the intelligence to close things down, the intelligence to speed up and slow down the game according to what Barcelona need that prevents the other team from being able to put the pressure on, win the ball back, that prevents the other team from having the possession and being able to have the time to look at that pass and go, right, there's the space behind the high line. We've analysed the high line endlessly, but it's also about the midfield and Pedro is a key part of that.

12:01Kay Murray:And then, as you say, You look at that pass for Lamin today and you look at the quality that he has to pick that ball out that isn't really there. Now, I know this is said before, but maybe it's worth just reminding ourselves of how a lot of us are looking at him and thinking, wow, he's got a bit of Xavi and a bit of Iniesta. How good a player are you if you've got a bit of the two best midfielders that Spain maybe has ever produced?

12:27Alejandro Moreno:The vision for that pass is frightening. You know, we sit and watch the screen And we can all say, well, he should have gone there Or he should have done that Or he should have went the other way I'm watching that and I didn't see that pass I didn't see it I think I wasn't a bad player I didn't see that sitting from where I was And I can assure you, when you're on the field To see that and then deliver it with a precision they did is absolutely frightening. And you add that to what Sid was talking about, because he absolutely is 100 % about the closing down and making it hard for the opposition that then negates that high line.

13:13Kay Murray:So, yeah, this kid's frightening. Barcelona's next game, of course, is against Atletico Madrid. They are 4-0 down, going to that second leg in the Copa del Rey. Atleti in action today. That's where Sid is, by the way. At bottom of the table, Real Vieira. In the end it would be heartbreak for the hosts. Late on who were the better of the two teams, Oblak produced a couple of great sayings. But in the end Julian Alvarez coming on as a second half substitute. And it would be the Argentinian who would make it 1-0 and give Atleti the win.

13:43Alejandro Moreno:Yeah, Simeone, he did bring the cavalry on towards the end. And you see the difference in the quality. I mean that's great play from a young kid as well. Great heart and desire to keep the ball in. and then from there, Julian Alvarez, I mean the composure again, he sees what's going on around him, cuts inside and then files at home.

14:04Kay Murray:Celebration then for Atletico Madrid, they of course are looking for a Champions League place next season for Real Viedo. They were close to getting the points today, didn't manage it and of course they're in dire straits now, sitting eight points off safety. Well, the aforementioned Copa del Rey semi-final is on Tuesday. Barcelona Atleti, that's at 2.30. 24 hours later, Real's supposed to have a 1-0 lead as they take on Athletic Club. Both those games, of course, live on ESPN+. Real Madrid get taff, meanwhile, on Monday. Coverage of that tie starts at 2.30 Eastern.

14:45Kay Murray:At Elland Road, Manchester City beat Leeds by one goal to nil. and it's Semenyo once again proving to be the difference for Pec Radiola's side. His goal on the stroke of half-time, we've seen Manchester City get the victory and close the gap on Arsenal at the top of the table. Welcome in, Don Hutchinson. Don, what do we learn from today?

15:07Kay Murray:I think we learn that they are ready for a title race and I thought the best two players to come out of Man City today was Mark Gehry and Ruben Diaz. So defensively, after the first 20 minutes, because they got a scare. I thought Leeds at Ellen Road, I thought they put them under pressure. They should have took the lead once or twice. The more the game went on when City took the lead, City looked like City. They kept hold of the ball. They took any sort of ball threat away from Leeds. Leeds couldn't then go long to try and pump it in the box. When they did, well, five, ten minutes to go, the centre-halves never missed a beat.

15:37Kay Murray:They never lost a header. And they just got the job done. They did get the job done with Semenya once again from the back of the net, Stevie. What a signing that could prove to be.

15:46Alejandro Moreno:Yeah, absolutely. He's been sensational. He was fantastic at Bournemouth. And he's just carried on doing what he was doing there at City. I was sitting watching this first half and I'm thinking, I think these players have taken what Pep said about going out and enjoying yourself and relaxing. Just a little bit literally. Because it took them, I mean, Don said 20 minutes. I thought it was about half an hour it took them to actually get going. You could see the difference in the way the Leeds players were closing the ball and getting around the field. whereas City were a little lethargic. But, again, they didn't make that many clear chances, but the ones they did make, that extra bit of quality.

16:27Alejandro Moreno:Leeds don't have the quality up front. Had they had that, then we might be thinking about or looking at a different result. But City have got that quality when it matters and deserve to win in the end.

16:38Kay Murray:City are, of course, involved in all the competitions and what that means is you take a look at their schedule for March and April. It is bonkers, Don. Yeah. I mean, you look at that. I mean, that's why as a pro you want to be in the latter stages of all the competitions. But like frightening fixtures, you look at after the Forest game, you've got Newcastle, Real Madrid, Real Madrid again, Arsenal quarterfinals, Chelsea, Arsenal again. I mean, it's a tough schedule. Don't get me wrong. It's the games you want to play in. And I would imagine, and not having played at that very highest level, when you're going for quadruples and you're going for doubles and this, that, and the other, it's how you try and manage it.

17:21Kay Murray:No Erland Haaland today, so that was a little bit of a mystery when he got a knock a couple of days ago. So I imagine he's on the treatment table and the physios and the doctors are working overtime on him because he's the one that's with that schedule. You're going to need 100 % fit for the running. But yeah, I think City are coming into form. I thought weeks ago, Dan, I didn't really see it. I thought they still looked a bit fragile. I thought you could still get it this Man City side. I saw a different side of them today. That's why I mentioned the two centre-backs. I never really felt as though towards the end of the game that Leeds were going to break them down or get a lucky knockdown in the 18-yard box because the centre-halves and then Donnarumma behind them, I thought they looked really solid.

18:04Kay Murray:Elsewhere, Liverpool taking on West Ham. The hosts were 3-0 up before the break. West Ham got one back, made Liverpool sweat a little bit. But in the end, Anneslot's side win by five goals to two. It had that kind of back and forth feel, didn't it?

18:19Alejandro Moreno:Yeah, it did. And I think, listen, you've got to give credit to West Ham. You're 3-0 there at half-time. But at the same time, you've got to look at Liverpool and go, how can you not look comfortable at 3-0? And it goes to 3-1. And I can only imagine what the feeling was like at the stadium because sitting watching it, I could feel it with the noise that was coming in the groaning. Right. You just weren't sure. And even at 4-1, when it goes to 4-2, again, I think there was, what, 15 minutes to go or something? Again, you're going, oh, no, could this really happen? So, yeah, I mean, 5-2 on paper, this looks like a comfortable great victory.

19:02Alejandro Moreno:Yes. But yet again, they don't put you at ease, Liverpool. They just don't do that. But they get the win done.

19:11Kay Murray:Yeah, I mean, I was on comms for the game and I went through the same emotions. Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. No. Yeah, but it was like 3-0, three set plays. So West Ham gifted them three goals from three corners. And you go, well, any Liverpool side leading 3-0 at Anfield, this will be six, it'll be ball retention, it'll be like 70-30 possession it'll be easy then you go 3-1 and you go ooh could they get it back to 3-2 then you go 4-1 you go yep that's job done 4-1 4-2 you go ooh could it be 4-4 and then 5-2 the game's over because Liverpool scored I think within the last sort of five minutes but it was a it was a bonkers game I mean Arnazlott said afterwards he was pleased because it was three set plays they got gifted them but they'll take them individual performances I was, you know, trying to latch on to who was my man of the match today.

20:04Kay Murray:Probably Ekotike had a push, but it wasn't a game that they dominated, that they controlled. My biggest worry watching the game was, it was the management of the game from the Liverpool players when the scoreline hit 3-1. And it was almost like Liverpool's process, and their mentality was, right, we're not comfortable at 3-1. So we're going to go and really try and get the 4-1. and we're going to try her utmost to get the 4-1. It's like, just keep the ball, lads. On a day where it was Ronnie Moran's birthday, who me and Stevie both played under, one of Liverpool's legendary coaches, Bugsy, I could hear him being on comms today shouting, and Stevie would as well, find a red shirt, find a red shirt, keep the ball, keep the ball, keep the ball.

20:47Kay Murray:If you can't, you're going to get dragged off. And Liverpool were just at 3-1 obsessed with trying to score their fourth goal because maybe behind them they thought, we're going to let another one in. And that was how the game went until it hit 5-2.

21:00Alejandro Moreno:Yeah, I had Ronnie in my head as well. You always have Ronnie in your head. I know, honestly, I do. And Don's 100 % right. Liverpool, they had players streaming forward and they'd have so many men ahead of the ball and then the pass would be a poor one. Right. And they would all be out the game. Yeah. And Ronnie would be sitting... You know, if I was a full-back and I'm trying to... He'd be going, where are you going? He'd be actually saying, where do you think you're going? Get yourself back in there. I mean, yeah. No game management. The game management was really, really poor. And against a better team, if they keep doing that, particularly in the Champions League, we could get some barmy results.

21:43Kay Murray:You mentioned the Champions League. Galatasaray, of course, their next opponent. We learned that yesterday. You went on yesterday, Stevie. Your thoughts about it?

21:51Alejandro Moreno:Can't complain. Good draw. I wish I was more confident in Liverpool, but at the same time, if you'd given me a choice of teams to play, they would have been one of them. No question.

22:04Kay Murray:Yeah, you're taking that, Don, yeah? If you're Liverpool. Yeah, have you got your bell there, Dan? Have you got your ding-ding bell? Oh, here we go. You got it ready? I did commentary for Galatasaray Juventus. Well, I've done the Juve-Galatasaray game. The 7-5 game. Liverpool will beat these guaranteed going through over two legs. There we go. It is a Don Hutchinson. Steady with guarantee, ladies and gentlemen. They can't defend. They can't defend. They cannot defend. Newcastle. Meanwhile, St James' Park, another disappointing home defeat for Newcastle. This time, they lose 3-2 against Everton.

22:38Kay Murray:Incredible stuff from Everton, who continue to do well under David Moyes. For Newcastle, more questions surrounding Eddie Howe. Newcastle, of course, labouring very much so in the Premier League. Don, obviously, your Newcastle allegiance here very much tested against your old club, Everton. What's wrong with them? Well, the worry is, Dan, they've lost three games at home on the spin. So when you watch and analyze Newcastle, I mean, Eddie Howe come up with a system today that backfired massively. He played Joe Linton on the left wing. He played Anthony Gordon as a number nine and Walter Arder in midfield.

23:18Kay Murray:and it was like that got shelled and got abandoned after half an hour because it was a system and a personnel shift that no one saw coming. It didn't work. There was bits in the game where they didn't manage it. I mean, when Newcastle scored, they give a goal straight away back within a minute. They'd done that twice in the game. The save from Pickford at the end, former Sunderland man, was an amazing save. Reminded me of Neville Southall, that type of save. But the worry for Newcastle is, Dan, they've always been strong at home. And they've always been a little bit shoddy, especially this season, away from home.

23:53Kay Murray:When you can't get away wins and you've lost three at home on the spin, it's time to worry. It's not time to panic because I think Eddie Howe will go back to basics. But it is a worry how a team that's trying to go deep against Barcelona in the Champions League are drifting towards the bottom end of the Premier League. That's the worry.

24:11Alejandro Moreno:I said I fancy them against Barcelona. and kiss of death at one. Tell you what, Barcelona's going... They can't... Defensively, they're all over the place. They're getting cut. There's one thing to lose goals defensively if it's from set pieces, things like that. But when you are game after game, home and away, getting sliced apart, because they're getting sliced apart. This is not somebody making a mistake. The actual back four right now, they need to work on it. And if they don't, you're going to continue. They're going to continue to win some games and they're going to lose games because they can't keep clean sheets.

24:48Kay Murray:Premier League action, of course, continues on Sunday. All eyes will be on Arsenal against Chelsea as Arsenal look to re-establish a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League table. We'll, of course, be discussing that on the next edition of ESPN FC.

25:32Kay Murray:What a game it was in Germany today. We had our usual pitchside reporters. We also had a setup at Tom's Watch Bar. And that's where we head now to reflect on what was quite a classica. Bayern Munich 3-2 it would finish over Borussia Dortmund.

25:48Alejandro Moreno:Archie Rindt and Thomas Hitzelsberg have been pitchside at the Signal Iduna Park for us today. Two losses for Dortmund this season in league. Play Archie, both of them coming to Bayern.

26:00Kay Murray:Indeed, Kay. And I can bring in now a scorer of two goals today once again. How are you, Kay? You good? Doing very well, Harry. I'm sure you are too. I tell you what, for us, that was a breathtaking watch. For you, what was it like to play in? Yeah, it was a great game. You know, first half was a little disappointing from our point of view, I felt like. We had some good moments, but didn't use the ball well enough. But we also know in the second half, they may get a little bit tired. They had a tough week away from home midweek. And we just had to stay patient. And that's exactly what happened.

26:31Kay Murray:We scored some good goals, disappointed to concede again. But then to show the character and step back up and a great finish from Jo at the end there. So a big game, a big moment in the title race. So it feels amazing right now. But no disrespect, because you played well. You probably deserved to win. But there were moments when it was really, really tough. The crowd was behind Dortmund. What is it with your team, the season, that you always grind it out? You end up winning these games. What does it take? Yeah, that's that championship mentality that you need to have. In the biggest moments, you need to be able to stay calm and play your game and not get carried away with the atmosphere.

27:05Kay Murray:We knew it was going to be tough here. We knew the crowd were going to be behind them. And like you said, it probably wasn't our best game of the season, but we found a way to get over the line, especially when it went to 2-2 with five minutes plus stopping time to go. It would have been easy to kind of maybe sit back and be under the cosh, but we stepped back up and then got a goal. And, you know, this type of result at this moment is really important. What was said at halftime? What was the tone in the dressing? It was quite calm, to be honest. I think we knew we could play better with the ball.

27:33Kay Murray:So we said just to be a little bit cleaner, a little bit sharper, because the spaces were there. Even in the first half, whenever we did break the press, we was pretty much through in their final third just to use the ball a little bit better. And I thought we'd done that second half. It still wasn't perfect. I felt we'd have to watch it back and see. There's still areas to improve 100%. But sometimes in these moments, in these games, it's just about finding a little bit more than the opposition, and that's what we've done today. In all competitions, you have more goals than in either of your two seasons at Bayern already.

28:04Kay Murray:It's March tomorrow, Harry. Do you know how many goals that is, by the way? 45? Yes. Yes, there we go. A striker never forgets. A striker knows, yeah. How do you feel like you, I mean, you've said already that you feel you are the best version of yourself this season. How are you keeping that going? I guess by not thinking about it and just counting each goal as it comes? Yeah, I think I've spoken a lot about this throughout my career. I think sometimes you go through spells as a striker where almost everything you touch goes into the back of the net. whether you finish it well, whether you don't, it kind of just seems to go in.

28:38Kay Murray:And there's times where you might go two or three without a goal. You're hitting everything clean. You're hitting the post to keep us making good saves. And it's important in both moments to stay calm, you know. I know in this team I'm going to get chances. Serge put one on the plate for me today. Stanley done well for the penalty. And, you know, I always try and step up and help my team in those situations. So, yeah, it's important not to get too carried away. But, of course, use the moment, use the momentum that you're on. I look forward to every game. this month's been a little bit strange for us not having midweek games so you're kind of waiting for waiting to get back out there and it'll be the same next week so do you think you need a break between now and the world cup final or let's start with the champions league final and then the world cup final or you just keep playing as much as the german here that's a long way away yeah but yeah it sounds good to me but yeah there's a long way from now until then like like we just said we're not even in march yet we're march tomorrow and so many more games to play both in all competitions.

29:32Kay Murray:So we put ourselves in a great spot right now and we have to use that. We have to enjoy that, but also get ready kind of for these next three months because this is when the season really starts, when the big games start and we need to be ready for that. One last one, 11 points clear. How important is it to have that bumper as the team given that last season in April, the team wasn't rotated at all from the Dortmund game to the Inter game. It gives a little bit more space to breathe maybe? Yeah, I think of course you want to have the biggest lead possible going into any busy period of the season, especially, you know, March, April, where Champions League knockout starts, not just physically, but mentally, it's draining on the team, international break in between that.

30:12Kay Murray:So, yeah, you end up playing pretty much midweek all the way through. So, important to get that 11 points back, but also we know how quick it can turn around. We had that a few weeks ago. It only takes two results and all of a sudden, you know, the pressure's back on. So, it'll be no different. You can't win a game like today, like we did, and then not follow it up the next week. So we'll enjoy it for sure, but our focus will quickly switch onto the game Friday night. Harry, thank you very much for your time as ever. Thank you very much. There we go. Harry Kane with us, Kay. Just get Thomas' thoughts briefly.

30:46Kay Murray:Yeah, I always think he needs a break at some point, but he's in this condition where he just wants to play more games. He just said he only had a week of training, no game in between, and almost feels like he needs more games. He wants to break records. He enjoys his football and you can tell. I still love the fact that you can be as good as Harry Kane and you still count every one of your goals. How does he do it during the game? Does he say, oh, that's 44 now, 45? There's something of it's still the kid in him who's playing on this stage here. And yet he never looks like he just looks after himself.

31:20Kay Murray:He's there for the team and that is really so impressive. Every time. And I think he really enjoyed the battle that that game was today as well. I mean, this is very much the calm after the storm, because it really was blood and thunder for so much of that game. And to come out of that and win from a Bayern perspective, you've mentioned it, but that must do something for this team, particularly with the even bigger challenges that they're going to face. I'd say in the past, these games haven't always lived up to the expectation in terms of calling it classica. Tonight, it was a classica from the first minute to the very last.

31:55Kay Murray:The Dortmund side of the equation. 11 points they trail. Tomorrow is March. 10 games left in the season. What do they do with the rest of the season? They're going to be in the Champions League next season. So tonight's performance was so important. Not the results, of course. The performance. That's everything that matters. Because people wanted to see a response from being knocked out in the Champions League. And I think this team tonight, they proved that have got everything that it takes. That's what people want to see. But of course, it's going to be tough waking up tomorrow morning thinking, we're out of the DFB Bokal, we're not in the Champions League anymore, and they can start thinking about next season.

32:37Kay Murray:But the players, for sure, they can look into the mirror saying, we've given our best shot, but we've lost to Bayern Munich side. We've been exceptional this season. Knowing a few Dortmund fans like I do, I think that they'll be going, but why could this team not turn up like this on Wednesday night? Why does it take that sort of serious defeat that they had to produce this? And how can you have this energy for the rest of the season? Because you and I know it. Do you expect that kind of level in the rest of the season? Because that's what serious teams do. Very different to compare the second leg in the Champions League to tonight's game.

33:14Kay Murray:Because obviously they won the first leg 2-0. And then you go to Atalanta almost thinking, you know, we're just going to see this out, see it through. And this didn't happen. and that was just that one moment where you think they weren't professional enough. But over the course of the season, this was only their second defeat in the Bundesliga, twice against Bayern. You have to give them credit as well. This season in the Bundesliga, for sure, is not as bad as people often think. Thomas, thank you very much for now. Joshua Kimmich with a cold, cold finish right at the end to win it for Bayern, probably clinch the title as well, K.

33:49Kay Murray:11 points clear with 10 games to go. Yeah, it's hard to argue with that, but I just want to get back to the Harry Kane point. I thought a goal scorer always knew his tally. That was no surprise to me, Ale. Absolutely not. Of course he knows. And the reason as to why he's asking about, hey, maybe we should play Wednesday, Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday that he was missing. It's because you're scoring two goals a game. See, when you're scoring two goals a game, you don't even feel that you're running. You're flying. And at this point in his career, Harry Kane knows himself so very well. And there's such maturity to his game.

34:25Kay Murray:His game is so complete. He does more than just score goals for this team. But he never forgets about what makes him a difference maker for this group. And that is, in the end, scoring goals. He does a hold-up play. He distributes play. He switches a point of attack. He's able to facilitate for others. But he doesn't sacrifice his bread and butter. Or his pretzel and mustard. Whatever the case may be. He just doesn't sacrifice it. You know what? I'm here to score goals, and he's still doing that at a very high level. Something I love that you talked about in the pregame, Patrick, was that even you're still learning things that continue to impress you about Harry Kane's game.

35:01Kay Murray:Yeah, as Ale said, he's a complete striker, and I obviously knew about Harry Kane and how good he is and how his scoring ability is, but he does so much more on the pitch, as Ale also mentioned. I really like how he's sometimes appearing deep, deep in defense, winning situations for Bayern and then creating transition counterattacks for his team with a long ball, kind of like a quarterback in American football. And so there's something of his game that I didn't know about, that he would do that. I thought he's a typical number nine waiting for a situation scoring goals, but he does so much more for that.

35:37Kay Murray:And he's so clever with doing that, pulling out of areas to give his teammates a little bit of room and then following back up to be there in the right kind of moment to finish the job. Bottom line, he's having fun. See, at this level, the game becomes sometimes a business. It becomes about pressure. It becomes about the expectations. And you forget about why is it that you do it to begin with. It's because it's fun to play. And these people show up here because it's fun to watch people play, to watch these players out on the field display their skill set. And it's fun to be a kid again. And I get that sense from Harry Kane.

36:17Kay Murray:It's just fun to show up for training. It's just fun to show up in matches. One, because you know you're going to get service. Two, because you know you're going to score goals. And three, you know you're going to win games more times than not. It's fun to be Harry Kane right now. We don't even need to have the conversation about the Bundesliga title at this point with 11 points, surely. Nine? And as Archie has clearly made us know, it is March tomorrow. That's been mentioned a few times. But I do want to talk to you, Ovo, about their chances in the Champions League this year. It is hard to make a case against them, isn't it?

36:46Kay Murray:It is, but still, it's the Champions League. There are a lot of teams that have quality, and they punish you right away if you do make mistakes. And we talked about it. Bayern has offered a few things every now and then amongst certain teams. And I think this, if I look back on the recent weeks after that Augsburg defeat, that Hamburg draw, they had a little bit of luck, I'd say, against Hoffenheim. In the end, it was a 5-1. But their early penalty and that early red card against Agbo Goume helped them there was in the cup I think it was against Leipzig a decision that didn't go against them for a penalty maybe for Leipzig So they had a few games that in the end look really solid and really really really well played But they had a little bit of help.

37:32Kay Murray:This was the first game where they really took their chances in their own hand and and probably deserved the win in the end because they played it well, they played it clever and they went against some circumstances. So now I think they're on the right path. But in Champions League, you can't offer anything. Not to City or Real Madrid if you make it to the next round. And after that, it's maybe Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain or Liverpool that's waiting for you. So that's still a long way and a tough job, but the team has all the ingredients that they need to win the Champions League as well. They have the belief as well, surely, in that chemistry, because there doesn't seem to be any fractions at all in this group, Ale.

38:14Kay Murray:Look, again, when it's fun to show up for work, you like the guy next to you. When you're winning games, everybody's great inside that locker room. Everybody's fun. When you're losing, I don't want to be with him. I want to go back to my house. I don't want to hang out with anybody that has anything to do with the team because it's not fun to be around each other. That's not the case at Bayern Munich. They're obviously enjoying the season. As it pertains to the latter stages of Champions League, we mentioned in the pregame, defending set pieces is a problem. It proved to be the case again today.

38:47Kay Murray:They allow yet another defensive set piece call. If we're going to project forward, again, latter stages of the competition, Arsenal may very well be there. What is it that they do better than anybody else in the world right now? Attacking set pieces. They depend heavily on that. It's a detail. And yet it can be such a big difference in a game where two teams are evenly matched. So as I project Bayern Munich and what they can do, they have to clean that up. If they do, they'll be very much part of the conversation. If they don't, then you know what the answer is. Nine. Great stuff, guys. Superb coverage, of course.

39:29Kay Murray:this morning throughout the day on the Classica. The action continues tomorrow. Stuttgart-Waltzburg, Eintracht-Frankfurt-Freiburg and it's Hamburg against Leipzig. All those games live on ESPN+.

39:43Kay Murray:PSG go four points clear at the top of the table. Remember, Launce would draw yesterday. PSG with a 1-0 victory over La Havre puts the men first and, of course, cements their place as favourites to win the French title. Speaking of favourites, Inter now 13 clear of AC Milan. A miserable week for Inter in the Champions League. Back to it domestically, though, with a 2-0 victory over Genoa.

40:09Kay Murray:Welcome in to the latest edition of Extra Time. Stevie with us. Don, talk us through your jumper, your jersey, however you want to describe it. I knew you'd have a little comment. I'm in the garage working from home and the heater's broke, so I put a nice little ski jumper on. Oh, I see. Oh, lovely.

40:26Alejandro Moreno:Not just a jumper. A ski jumper.

40:28Kay Murray:A ski jumper. Well, there you go. Do you ski, Don? No. Why do you have a ski jumper?

40:37Kay Murray:Well, that was sold on the website I bought it off. It was like a nice warm ski jumper. Are you satisfied with it? I love it. What's happened to the heating? You don't pay the bill? No, it's a little portable one that I've got down by my feet. Oh, I see. Okay. Question for Stevie. Is Lamin Amal currently the best player in the world? Ooh. Wow.

41:06Alejandro Moreno:So who have we got? I'm trying to think of somebody else. Right, so who's going to be the Premier League Player of the Year? Declan Rice? Semenya? Semenya might get it. I don't think so. I'll tell you what, Man City won the league, Semenya. Semenya might get it. I suppose. Yeah. It's going to be Lamin Amal, isn't it?

41:24Kay Murray:So where are we going? We're going to Germany, which has got Harry Kane, Elize. And then we're going to Spain, killing Mbappe. I think Mbappe is probably...

41:37Alejandro Moreno:Well, no, the question is currently. Yes. Well, it's not Mbappe. It's hardly played. Which means hardly played. He missed a couple of games.

41:44Kay Murray:That's it. Well, there you go.

41:45Alejandro Moreno:He didn't play.

41:47Kay Murray:No, I think that's being a bit picky. So who are you picking in the playground first? Mbappe or Laminya Malle?

42:02Alejandro Moreno:Oh God, it's between the two of them, isn't it? It is, I think. I think you're right. I think it's between the two of them. Who am I taking first?

42:13Alejandro Moreno:It's your mouth, man. I'm going to go in your mouth, yeah. You think so? Yeah, I think I would. Really? Yeah. Yeah, I think I would take your mouth. Don?

42:23Kay Murray:I'd have Yamal all day long. I mean, I'd even have Harry Kane just above Kylian Mbappe on current form. Hasn't Kylian Mbappe got a million goals as well as Harry Kane? Mbappe's got, what, 29? Well, yeah. Kane's on what, 45 or something? Why would you have Kane over Mbappe, Don? I think, well, I think he scored more goals, if I'm not wrong. I think Kane's on about 45 or something.

42:51Alejandro Moreno:Yeah, Kane's about goals.

42:53Kay Murray:I think he's more consistent. I think Mbappe's one of these where he's glitzy and he's obviously amazing, don't get me wrong. But I think Kane's just one of these where he just churns out the goals every single season. And he gets... It's a modern phrase where people go, oh, he gets disrespected. It's not disrespect, but he does get overlooked a little bit. I would disagree, but there we are. Who am I? Let alone score, these days Salah doesn't even win one-on-ones. He also seems to have lost pace and can't outrun defenders anymore. Has all of this got to do with lack of confidence or is this an irreversible decline that has begun?

43:40Alejandro Moreno:You know, I'd like to say, I know that... I know that we're employed here because we've played and we've seen almost everything. I've never seen this. I've never seen this. How somebody can go from the top of the mountain and just disappear so quickly is absolutely scary. I've never seen it before. Ever. I've no idea. All of the above could be true.

44:14Kay Murray:So lack of confidence and irreversible decline.

44:18Alejandro Moreno:It's hard to argue that those are two of the problems. I mean, seriously. Go figure. I don't think he could answer it. If you actually spoke to Mo Salah himself and asked him, he wouldn't be able to tell you. I bet he wouldn't. He would be like, ah. And Don?

44:41Kay Murray:I think the only thing you can add to it, because it is all of the above, I think what you can add to it is Liverpool over the years have been flying. They serviced Mo Salah like you wouldn't believe. When Klopp had the three boys in midfield, they never scored any goals. That was the engine room of Liverpool. And they serviced Mane, they serviced Salah and Firmino. And that engine room was designed to service the front men by winning the ball back. Last year, Liverpool were so good, it feels like to me they were getting the ball to Mo Salah. as quick as possible, as you would being a midfield player.

45:12Kay Murray:You get your star and mend the ball. It feels as though this season, it feels as though he's not getting the service, I think, in an area where he can get a defenders 1v1. If you watch a Liverpool game, the majority of times that Mo Salah gets the ball, he's picking it up on the halfway line. So he's probably got to dribble past two, three, four defenders before he can get a shot away. So it just feels like, numerically, he's got to score wonder goals, which obviously he's not doing. On top of what that sort of question says there, it is all of the above. But tactically, I don't think Liverpool are servicing him as well as they did in the past.

45:50Alejandro Moreno:Even when he does get it, though, he's cutting in on his left side and you know he's going to... It's not even close. You know, he's not making goalie make a brilliant save. He's not hitting the woodwork. It's not... You know, you're not going... You're going, what? That's what you're doing.

46:13Alejandro Moreno:So, again, go figure. I wish I could tell you but I don't.

46:17Kay Murray:Do we have the top of the table? Possible. Can we show that now? Oh, we don't have it, no. OK, percentage chance that Liverpool finish third this season, Don. Let me just remind you, let's have a look. Table. OK. Three points off Villa. Liverpool are three points off Aston Villa who are terrible. so there's not a bad chance. Manchester United, of course, there. Yeah, well, Villa, they fell off a cliff. I think they're two wins and eight. Yeah, percentage is gone. So their form is terrible. Let's have a look here. Let's have a look. I think out of them teams, bizarrely, I feel as though Man United are best placed to finish third.

47:05Kay Murray:OK. Because they're five wins in six. They're in really good form, unbeaten in six. So they're flowing. They've got Palace tomorrow. So they'll beat them.

47:18Kay Murray:And it's whether Liverpool can catch Villa, which I think they can. But Chelsea worry me. I'm still going to go. I think it's between Liverpool and Chelsea. I think it's 50-50. I think United will make it. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Dom, the question is who will finish third? Mind you. Manchester United, 100 %? Yeah. 100%. I mean, I can't go 100, can I? Well, it's a percentage question. You just said Manchester United are finishing third. Yeah, I know. Because I know it's late at night for me, but I can see your brain squirreling away. And if I go something like a 40%, I've then got to do the maths between the other three teams.

48:05Kay Murray:OK. Because I'm still not convinced.

48:11Kay Murray:What? Liverpool to finish third? Yes, Don. No. They're not going to finish third. So 0%. Liverpool will not finish third. No chance at all. Zero. I'll give them 10%. OK. 10%. All right. And then what about the others? That's it. See? I knew your brain would kick in. Man United 70, Villa 10, Chelsea 10. OK, all right, there we go. Beautiful. Didn't you say it was a mile between Chelsea and Liverpool for four? Anyway. I think so. All right, let's go back in time, Stevie. Start, bench or drop? British footballers who played in the Bundesliga. Harry Kane, Kevin Keegan, Tony Woodcock.

48:58Alejandro Moreno:Well Harry Kane scored a million goals more than the other two. And Kevin Keegan was a, he wasn't an out and out centre forward. Neither was Tony Woodcock really. So Harry Kane absolutely has to be number one. I don't know anything about Tony Woodcock, tell me more. He played for Arsenal initially. Well he played at Forest, then he went to Arsenal, and then he went to Germany. And he was, he kind of played with a centre forward. So it would be Harry Kane, Kevin Keegan. Who Don thinks is better than Kylian Mbappe. Kevin Keegan took Hamburg to a, well what's now the Champions League final? to a European Cup final and was European Player of the Year while he was at Hamburg.

49:52Alejandro Moreno:Okay.

49:54Kay Murray:I think he won the Ballon d 'Or as well, Stevie, didn't he? I think he won it twice.

49:59Alejandro Moreno:I think he was European Player of the Year. Yeah, twice.

50:03Kay Murray:Cool.

50:04Alejandro Moreno:So Tony Woodcock's third. Okay. I'm going to have to have a little think on Harry Kane one. I forgot that Keegan was Ballon d 'Or. But then... Ballon d 'Or. Ballon d 'Or.

50:18Kay Murray:What's that?

50:21Alejandro Moreno:Tell you what, there was more competition then as well for the Ballon d 'Or.

50:27Kay Murray:Don, do you want to chuck in an opinion on this? Yeah, I'd go start Kane, bench Kevin Keegan, drop Tony Woodcock.

50:36Alejandro Moreno:I think I'll stick with my original, but it's tight.

50:43Kay Murray:Yeah, it's tight. Don, do you not think if Kylian Mbappe was playing in the Bundesliga, he would score more goals? That's right. Probably. But he's not playing in the Bundesliga, really. It's fine. It's fine. Don, should Howell focus on the Champions League and FA Cup instead of the Premier League like Ange? Oh, yeah. No, I hate that. No, I hate that. I hate when people say, focus on this, focus on that. No. Newcastle should be focusing on as many trophies as they can while they're in it. And I had the argument with a pal of mine at work today, and he said, no, Newcastle should try and get into the Europa League Conference or the Europa League ready for next season.

51:22Kay Murray:Because if they finish in sixth or seventh and finish in Europe, as in the Europa League, and they won that next season, that's a route then back into the Champions League. So just use the Premier League in the immediate short term to get your confidence back, momentum back, to then go into that Barca game where you have loads of confidence and then you can go out and beat Barca. If you do what Ange done and you lose all the Premier League games and you start drifting, drifting, drifting, you've got nothing to latch on to going into the Barca game. Then there's every chance over two legs they might get beat against them.

51:58Kay Murray:So you're knackered. What did you type into Google when you were searching for that jumper Don?

52:07Kay Murray:J Limburg, which is a nice make that I sort of like to wear. Oh okay, oh lovely. Big influencer Don, look at that. It's a golf brand, it's a golf brand. I thought it was a ski brand. No, it's a golf brand but this is a ski jumper.

52:29Kay Murray:Stevie, with City grinding out wins like this, do you still believe Arsenal can handle the pressure or are they about to crumble?

52:38Alejandro Moreno:I'm still on the Arsenal bandwagon that they can see it through. But it's getting tight. Where is the game tomorrow?

52:50Kay Murray:Oh, okay. Arsenal. Is that Fink? Is that Arsenal? I think. Okay, that's all right. It's my producer, maybe could have helped there, but no worries. Prediction for Rangers versus Celtic tomorrow, Don.

53:05Kay Murray:Come on Rangers. Hearts won today, so they're seven points clear. Come on Rangers. Okay. Big game, big game. All right. Prediction is 3-1 Rangers.

53:16Alejandro Moreno:Yes. As you know, they're on a great run, Don.

53:20Kay Murray:What about Livingston?

53:24Alejandro Moreno:Yeah, I mean... I'm going to go to Rangers, but again, there's no more channel.

53:32Kay Murray:Okay, final question for the panel. Today is National Public Sleeping Day. Was there ever an occasion where you embarrassed thinking you fell asleep in public like Shaka when you shouldn't have? Shaka, of course, fell asleep at the World Cup final.

53:48Kay Murray:Stevie, I imagine as a man who loves his sleep, I imagine there's been a few occasions... I was actually going home to see my brother.

53:58Alejandro Moreno:Okay. And the revs of the game, and so when the game finished, I actually got a policeman to take me to the airport. Okay. Because between the game finishing and the flight, it was tight. Oh, so you got an S. So a friend of mine said he had a police friend who would take me. Wow. So I got a nice quick ride to the airport. Okay. Got on the flight, never slept a wink. Right. Arrived at Glasgow Airport about eight o 'clock in the morning, knackered, and I went outside, because my brother was picking me up. He told me he'd be outside. Okay. So I sat in a bus shelter, and as I'm sitting in the bus shelter, I fell asleep.

54:44Alejandro Moreno:Right. And then I feel this nudge on my shoulder. and there's two policemen asking me questions and have I been taking anything? Fantastic. Don't you know who I am? And I'm like, what are you doing here? And I'm like, well, I'm getting picked up. And they're going, well, where are they? And unfortunately, my brother came past. Wow. They went, aye, OK, on you go.

55:12Kay Murray:Imagine the state. I thought I was going to get locked up. That would be brilliant. Don? A couple really. I had one when we went to Australia at the end of the season and I was severely jet-liked, like you wouldn't believe. So we were preparing to go out bonding that night, so I thought I'll have a little nap in the afternoon at about 2, 3 o 'clock in the afternoon. I had a 24-hour nap. when I woke up, it was three o 'clock the next day, but not in the morning, back in the afternoon again. Wow. It was a mental sleep. I just lost a full day somewhere. And then the other one, so tired, in the middle of the season playing for Chef United after like a running day, and you just, all you can think of is like, I'm so tired, I just want to nap, want to nap, want to nap.

55:59Kay Murray:I was driving home, went into a petrol station, filled my car up full of petrol, forgot to pay, because I was so obsessed with having the sleep, I went to my house, fell asleep, and the policeman knocked on the door. Wow. He forgot to pay for your pet roll. And did you give him that awful story? I went, I forgot. Did he tell you? And did he believe you? No, he did. I said, oh, mate, because, yeah, he's obviously ran my name through the checks and stuff. And, yeah, I just said, oh, mate, honestly, I'm so tired. I said, I'll go back now. And I went back in the afternoon and paid for the pet roll.

56:33Kay Murray:Oh, bless you. I fell asleep at a press conference. That was in Marker, that picture. Nice. Yeah, back in the day. ESPN is always a professional.

56:42Alejandro Moreno:It wasn't jet lag, I'm assuming. Yeah, I wasn't in a bus shelter.

56:48Kay Murray:ESPN is returning tomorrow. It is Arsenal hosting Chelsea. As we'll be looking back at that game.

57:09Alejandro Moreno:not. Egal, Zauberwort Verlustvortrag. Make it simple with Viso Steuer and when she works then, it's kaching. That's it? Safe. Viso Steuer. Hol dir dein Geld zurück. Now to try it out.
