In short
Beauty as “energetic radiance” and self-acceptance; using Human Design to guide skincare/self-care and reduce perfectionism, anxiety, and body dysmorphia. Mikaela frames beauty as inner work plus “energetic hygiene,” cellular regeneration, and energetic integrity—not external perfection.
Guest
Mikaela MacLean, esthetician (20+ years), Reiki-trained energy worker, shadow-work practitioner, and Human Design reader; founder of the Beauty by Design Method. She previously worked in medical aesthetics/plastics/dermatology-focused settings.
Key claims
- Inner emotional alignment shows up as visible glow (“you see someone from across the room”).
- Human Design is a “diagnostic beauty tool” for reframing depression/anxiety and self-perception.
- Skincare intention can affect product “molecules”/water; affirmations and energetic practices matter.
- Body-image perfectionism can be healed by recognizing it and speaking kindly to the body.
Notable examples
- Her personal shift from traditional aesthetics to spiritual/intuitive practice after realizing patients reflected her own “beating myself up.”
- Discussion of emotional reactions to cosmetic changes (teeth, postpartum body changes).
- A Human Design reading example: the host’s chart suggests depression-proneness as “darkening of the light,” plus tools like five-senses grounding.

0:14Today on Everything is the Best, I'm joined by the luminous Mikaela MacLean, an esthetician, energy worker, and human design reader, and founder of the Beauty by Design Method. Mikaela blends physical with the energetic, helping people align their outer appearance with their inner truth. A formal medical esthetician trained in Reiki and shadow work, she brings deeply holistic approaches to beauty, one rooted in energetic hygiene, cellular regeneration, and the power of knowing yourself. I mean, it's a really unbelievable episode because it's just one of those aha moments for me that was like, oh, like, yeah, you see someone from across the room when they're glowing internally, right?
0:58And it's not, a cream and it's not a treatment, but it really is that like inner work. So this is such a good episode to be able to talk about what beauty really means, how human design can guide your skincare and self-care and what kind of like true radiance comes from, how it comes from like an energetic integrity and not perfection. She also shares her personal journey from the world of traditional aesthetics to a more spiritual and intuitive practice, which I think a lot of people are really interested in moving into. So hopefully that's helpful for everybody. okay i hope you enjoy it okay it's so nice to meet you lydia has said very nice things about you oh it's so nice she's like i love pia and i'm like well i'm gonna meet her so yay i am just so fascinated and inspired i think what you do is so fucking cool and i can't wait to talk about it so you are an esthetician but you also do human design and you allow human design to kind of, I mean, you did the coolest thing the other day on your Instagram where you were like, let's do manifestation.
2:02And you referenced a old, I believe like Japanese writer who talked about like molecules change when you speak positively. And you were like, so we can change like the water molecules in our face products. And I was like, duh, incredible to like, I mean, that intention of like spritzing something that's like moisture You're based on your skin rather than, so, I mean, that's just to give everybody like a little bit of an example of what you do, which I think is so cool. So I'd love to talk about like how you got into being an esthetician, which you've been for over 20 years. And then if you could also then like describe what human design is because most people don't know.
2:41So I, I'm going to, I'm going to try to keep it quick. I got into being an esthetician when I was tiny. As soon as I came out of the womb, I wanted to be a doctor. Like that was it. and parent crushed my dreams. And at the same time, I was really serious in ballet. So, you know, I was like, okay, so right there we have like medicine and healing and then like art. So I was really serious in ballet. I actually wound up going to the School of American Ballet for people that Darcy Kistler like handpicked me at like 14, you know, so it was like a big deal. So I'm like at the pinnacle, you know, I think I'm going to be a professional ballet dancer.
3:15That's all I wanted by then. And it's very much in my design to be obsessive about like, a thing at a time. So I'm there, I rupture my Achilles and I'm, so I'm 15 years old at this point. And like my whole plan for a career is, is gone. So I'm like, you know, just like aimless, all of that crushing. That's a young age to have that much of a like soul crushing life moment happened. It did not lead anywhere. Good. Let's just say that. So meanwhile, and I always leave this part out, it's like, I'm a Pisces, you know? So it's like always into the spirituality and everything kind of in the background.
3:50Right. And, and just wandering aimlessly at this point, you know, it was always very good in school, but you know, like when it's the thing that you love and are passionate about and it's gone, it doesn't really matter. So anyway, at some point, you know, I should also pause and say, it's like, I have a, I have a Pisces, but I have a Leo moon and a Leo North. And so growing up in the eighties, you know, it's like the glamour and, you know, dynasty, and you think you're going to grow up in lifestyles of the rich and famous or something and ride around in a limo. And so I just always would read the fashion magazines and everything.
4:22So it's kind of like this conglomeration. So cut to, I am like probably out of high school, like, okay, what am I going to do with my life? And somehow I was always into skin and somebody, it's a magical way. It just sort of like lands in my lap is that somebody is like, you can go to school for that. And I'm like, wait, what? You know, the thing that I used to read about in Vogue that nobody knew about, or you'd have to know somebody to know somebody, some esthetician in the back alley, you know, and all that kind of stuff, only the fashion insiders. And I was like, wait, Instagram. I mean, you'd pick up a magazine and they would name a dermatologist or an esthetician or somebody who was doing something.
5:01And it was so unachievable and so far away. Totally. So I had no idea, like you could actually go to school for that. And I'm going, wait, like this is the only, and it was, I'm a generator in design. It was like the only thing that finally came across my path after years of like being super depressed following the whole ballet thing. And I was like, wait, what? And you know, it's like to trace it back those origins. So that's, that's what happened. And I always, always a kid that went to the dermatologist. I was always into like, I want to, I want things to be beautiful. Right. And somehow eventually like this is like 22 years ago now was like, okay, and I'm going to go into derm.
5:38And so I I was always in medical aesthetics, like plastics and dermatology specifically. And so that's how I went up there. But over time, it was like, I'm beating myself up from the outside. And I'm basically doing that to my patients and then realizing everybody's here month after month. And we've all got the same issues and complaints of like, it's external, it's external, it's external. You know, like you fix this. So now let's fix that. And I'm like, oh my God, that's who I am. And it's just reflected back to me with my patients. So yeah, it kind of went very like soul search journey from there.
6:12You know, it's so fascinating because you're in such an arena that is just truly or was before you is just so external. Right. And so like this odd thing when you get older and like life ebbs and flows where you I've had moments where I'm doing the least, but I look incredible. because I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing and I'm happy and I'm joyful. You know, it's like, and I'm noticing that even like right now, like I'm having such a different postpartum experience because I had such a tough one before and you just had like a different approach, but I'm also very happy. And I think I was, you know, when you have your first kid, you're so nervous and this and that.
6:57And like the flow is so good right now that like, I feel very confident and I feel very happy. And I do feel like I look better right now than I have in a while because internally I've done so much work, you know, and I feel very like aligned with my purpose at the moment. And I'm like, huh, interesting. They're like, I am using some fabulous face creams.
7:24I'm always like, you're never going to pry those out of my hands. I'm always going to like do the things. The Dr. Simon's medicine, which is a billion dollars is worth every fucking penny. But like, you know, there is just something so internal going on. This is an ad by BetterHelp. Workplace stress is one of the biggest causes of declining mental health with 61 % of global workforce experiencing higher than normal levels of stress. And I can speak firsthand. And my husband and I are so overly stressed all the time with work stuff. And it really wasn't until I added therapy into my routine consistently that I was able to not let that build up and take control over me.
8:14Because on top of actual work being stressed, I think it also is really stressful to see like what other people are doing with work. and the whole thing is just complicated. And I talk about it often in my Instagram stories because it's really important to get the help that you need to work through that. And that's why BetterHelp is just so special because being able to speak to a therapist, be matched with somebody that's right for you, to be able to do that in the convenience of your home is really incredible. With over 30 ,000 therapists, BetterHelp is the world's largest online therapy platform, having served over 5 million people globally.
8:51And it works with an app score rating of 4.9 out of five based on over 1.7 million client reviews. It's so convenient. You just join a session with a therapist with the click of a button, helping you fit therapy into your busy life. Plus you can switch therapists at any time, which for me is like such a big deal because it can be so hard to find the right person. As the largest online therapy provider in the world, BetterHelp can provide access to mental health professionals with a diverse variety of expertise. Unwind from work with BetterHelp. Our listeners are going to get 10 % off their first month at betterhelp.com.

9:44Mikaela MacLean:After having some of the most moving conversations with people on the mat, expect full disclosure moments, life hacks to level up your life and stories that activate your dreams with no gatekeeping allowed. Listen to beyond the mat every Thursday, wherever you podcast.
10:05I would love to deep dive for a second into human design because I don't think that it's, I don't think many people know about it. And to me, it just, and I really need to do it more. I would love to actually like do like a session with you about it because. I'm going, girl, I need your birthbeats. Do you know them off the top of your head? Yeah. Oh yeah. Of course. 6.38 AM. I was born November 12th, 1986. You froze up. November 12th, 1986. And I was born at 6.38 a.m. A.m. Where at? In Pasadena, California. In 1986, November 12th, you said. At what time? 6.38 a.m. 6.38 a.m. All right. Pasadena.
10:56Just text my mom to double check, but I'm sure because I just did my astrology chart and I remember it being 6. Oh, yeah. Well, let's get it. I'm like, I'm obsessed. Anybody's chart you put in front of me. So I'm like, I have to know, I have to see. Well, why it's so cool for everybody is, and then you've talked about this at length, is like, you know, you're prone to depression, right? And so you mentioned like, you've mentioned before that like doing your chart, that's like part of your human design. So rather, how freeing to know, okay, there's not something wrong with me. I'm not, I don't need to let, But I feel big feelings and I have to lean into these emotions and feel this way.
11:40And this is part of my human design and I will get out on the other side. And it kind of takes that anxiety out of like, I mean, the worst is when you enter a depressive state and then the anxiety about having the depressive state is on top of it. But if you just remove that and feel the feelings and move through it, I mean, what a beautifully freeing experience. No, that's exactly it. I think there are so many things in the chart that speak to depression, anxiety, you know, like all of your hangups and the way that I look at it. And it's, it's the biggest energy in my chart is that like that depressive thing.
12:14And I'm like, oh, it's just, but that's all I've ever, all the only way that I ever saw it, not realizing like it's called, it's called the darkening of the light. It's like, I was designed to go through hard, deeply emotional things to come out the other side and help other people through it. You're like, oh, had I known that, you know, at 14, 15, I'd have been like, wow, you know, it still would have hurt, but it's like, it would give some meaning to, you know, your struggles. And, and so that's what I think is so cool. Like the way that I see even what I do for people, it's like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:44Human design. But I'm like, but it's, it's a, to me, it's like, it's a diagnostic beauty tool. Like I'm reading your lab results from the universe. Like, I guess I come over medical. I'm like, everything here means something. And guess what? It's a way of healing. Like to me, I'm like, it's not just like, oh, I'm this type or something. No, like this is so much deeper than that. And we can seek out what's in your chart that you've always just viewed incorrectly. So to me, it'd be somebody like, oh, I don't like my nose. And I'm like, what if you found out that nose was like the most amazing, gorgeous thing about you that you just hadn't grown into yet?
13:16You didn't see it correctly. You didn't perceive it. Right. And so I feel like that about the whole chart. And it's so amazing because you just look at this for people. You're never saw yourself the way that I'm seeing you right now. You know, that's so cool. And it's, and it is so reflective to like beauty and beauty procedures. It's like, you're amazing the way you are. There's nothing wrong with you. It's like, and there's also nothing wrong with putting a cherry on top of stuff. You know, like I love that. Like I'm, like I said, you're not going to, you're not going to make me stop doing my creams and my procedures and things, but I'm not using it as the source of my self-esteem or, you know like that complete I don't know it's just it's so extra yeah I mean we see that a lot listen like I've had my boobs done and I need to get them redone because now I've had two kids but like you know I was so confident before like I loved my little sexy 70s boobs and I wore see-through shirts all the time and like leaned into the I used to have like gold nipple rings when I was young in my 20s and would wear like fierce shirts and like I loved that just as much as I loved having like big voluptuous boobs that I really feel like fit my body and my personality too, you know?
14:29And it's a very like interesting thing. I didn't, you know, I just got my teeth done. I had this like funky teeth and I just got my teeth done. And that was like a little bit more of like an emotional rollercoaster for me than I ever had like imagined it would be. I felt very like my teeth looking, you know, being crooked and having space and being imperfect. I attached that so much to my youth. And now I feel like I look like a grownup. Yeah. Oh, interesting. Okay. And I was like, Oh, what a weird, yeah, it was such a weird, I was like way more emotional about that than I ever thought that I would be.
15:10Isn't that funny? Just like the attachment that we, we don't even know we have to things half the time and it doesn't, it's not reality until all of a sudden it's like, it's changed. It's permanent. It's gone. You know, but I do feel like there should be, you know, I mean, every, the world works how it works, but you know, I love in LA, right. Like it's the epicenter of the procedure, New York, when I lived there for 10 years, didn't have, you know, people do things, but they do them very simply and they do them very, you know, there's more subtle, more subtle. Like if you look at like, you know, like Lauren Santa Domingo, right.
15:45He was like, arguably like, you know, the most important like woman in New York city in fashion and like a perfectly groomed, gorgeous socialite. She has such her, her face is so beautiful because it's so interesting, you know, it's, it's more untouched looking. Yes. It's whereas like LA can look very, I mean, I go out to dinner here and I'll like see like five girls and I'm like, they all kind of have the same face. Yes. Right. It's just conforming, you know? And again, I think that that kind of speaks to like design where you're like, wow, we are so intricate and individual. Like, I mean, down to like really, really fine details.
16:29And why, why are we all trying to be the same? It's like you have, you have a very specific purpose and a role to fulfill here. So, you know, it's like, and to me again, that's just like a reflection of like, you're, you're trying to conform on the inside. So you're conforming on the outside. I know. And I do think that there should be, and there's never going to be, but it would be smart for everybody to, you know, have the kind of like a conversation with someone like you to be like, okay, like, what is my goal here? Like, where is this coming from? What's the intention for the work that I'm getting done?
16:59Like, how am I going to end up on the other side? I also too would like to do like a mommy makeover and work on my stomach. But like, and I think sometimes like, am I going to look at this new stomach and feel like detached like am I going to miss the little pooch that I've had my whole life you know like that's something that is like defined me and like my husband loves it you know it's like I always think it's just like a it's just like a funny thing like it is I do think it's important to kind of like work through what the intention is behind a lot of this oh absolutely and you know there's human design is such a good way to do that right I think it's an amazing way to do that you know there there are things in the chart that indicate, you know, this person's prone to perfectionism and, you know, this person's prone to this mental looping, you know, like things that things that are like how I, I say I refer to it as like a diagnostic tool, like that lab results.
17:52Like there's stuff that you can see that no one would know about you if, if it wasn't, you know what I'm saying? Like if you weren't public about it and having worked in plastic surgery is so interesting because I know that way in the past, I don't probably nobody does this, no practitioners anymore, but they used to make people go through like a psyche vow because you're about to change somebody. You should do that. I mean, it's crazy that they don't have any sort of money, you know, and it's unfortunate because I'm like, we see this huge rise in like body dysmorphic disorder, right? But that was never a thing that people were talking about back in the day, you know, and now you know that it's so, it's just so wild.
18:35So wild. That's cool that they used to make people go through that. It really is because I think you can suss out a lot of, a lot of stuff obviously before, but that's also where I look at this going, I can do that in about like five minutes. And you're like, okay, you know, like this person's got this going on. So like, let's be careful here. Yeah. And it's amazing. Your chart's super cool. You are somebody who I'm like, do you lean at all?
22:32Would you identify at all with being like, I hate to use the word psychic, but yeah, totally. Okay. Seeing the future, being very insightful. You've got a, you have a lot of definition, a lot of things happening. One of my favorites, I, there are channels in the chart where it brings something called definition to you. And it's kind of like your superpowers or your super strengths. And you have, I only have one in my entire chart, you've got, I don't know, like eight. And, but the one that, the one that I have, you have, and it's so cool because basically it's like, it's the ability to empower other people to love and accept themselves and just make people very comfortable.
23:11And it makes them more. That's literally so perfect for your job. I mean, that's incredible. And, but that, but that's it. It's like, when you realize like, oh, you were embedded with like these things on purpose. What I think too is cool. It's like, you know, even faith-wise, it's like, oh, wow. Like if you wanted confirmation on like who you are and what you're about, and then it is coming from somewhere like quite divine, like to me, this is it. It is it on the nose. And then you've got the ability to make things more perfect, like improving on everything for everyone. And then even just like crazy, crazy intuition.
23:48Yeah. I have really intense intuition. yeah hearing both ears do you are very auditory does that speak to you you know like music noises sound just vibration period and like if you on one hand it's the mark of somebody being like quite you know anxious about the future yes future tripping but at the same time you know when people realize like again you know we're having this conversation i'm like oh my god you're so freaked out about the future, but you know what, if you just practice being in the moment, what does that look like? It's easy for somebody to say that. And I'm like, no, this is where I, I kind of affectionately call like all of my, my collection of stuff, my energetic beauty pharmacy.
24:30I'm like, no, I'm going to give you actual tools and practices to use to come into the moment. Like the five senses practice, like what can I feel underneath my, what am I sitting on? You know, what can I taste, smell, hear, all of that. So in a funny way, it's like it's therapy on steroids, you know, without being therapy, it's like, let's just cut right to the, right to the, you know, center of everything that you have going on. You also have the ability to sell like big time, but like to your people, you know, it's like, like, I wouldn't say it's like, it's not necessarily for everybody. It's really about improvements and upgrades specifically.
25:05It really speaks to like health and wellness, like selling health and wellbeing and even self-esteem to other people. And so it's super cool. Again, you know, when you, when you, when you see things in people, I call that particular one, it's like, it'd be the person that's the peanut butter that, you know, goes around the pill that they're going to give to the dog. It's like, oh, it's the medicine that the dog needs, you know, but you're like, you have an ability to wrap it up in like a beautiful package and be able to deliver it to people in a way. I kind of like it's Mary Poppins spoonful of sugar.

25:40You know how to make it go down easy for people. And also even like, there's cool things in the chart that I speak to prosperity and stuff. And beauty specifically is one of the things in your chart. I love where the sun is about to go into that particular place. It's in Pisces. I have it as well. And just people who have this ability to, like I said, make things beautiful, make them lovely. Even you don't see it in yourself and other people see you in this like really, you know, like, like it's like a little, like the halo effect. There's just something about people that have this particular energy.
26:12And in your case, it isn't a very like prosperous place so that when you lean into that, you know, it's like, oh, good things come out of it. I would say it's like a soft pace, like a soft place for other people to land. The funny side of it though, cause everything's got a high and a low. I'm like, there's the shadow side and then there's a positive side. It's like, if it doesn't feel like, if it's not in the mood, doesn't want to listen to things. I find myself, I'm like, oh, you know, like, no, I'm not interested. Or even just hearing things repetitively is really beneficial for people like you and I.
26:44Yeah, absolutely. Because all of a sudden it's going to soak in, you know? So there's just so many, just amazing, amazing things in the chart. But at the end of the, I got to look at the astrology version of your chart. I look at like so many different, so many different things. Because you being a Scorpio, I'm like, where do we have that? Oh, you're a Scorpio in the first house. So it's like very almost like Plutonian. Like when people meet you, it's a very transformative experience. I guess it's kind of a funny thing to say to someone, but it's like that is, and you're a Pluto like on rising in your chart too.
27:17So yeah, like very, whether or not you even recognize it in yourself, it's something that's going to come very natural to you. But I'm sure that people that encounter you and that know you, that's probably probably makes a lot of sense to them. At the end of the day, like there's stuff, my favorite placements in the chart have to do with something called the nodes, the North and the South node. It's about your karma and your Dharma. I'm obsessed, right? And you're an Aries North node. It's like in your, it's in your everyday work and health, health and wellness area of your chart. And it's funny because you're coming from like the very spiritual place and bringing that, I would say it's like you're, you're somebody who's meant to make the intangible tangible.
27:59Right. And also it's coming from Libra, Libra in Pisces domain. So this is, this is being somebody who's about beauty, balance, fairness, all of that partnership. And you're really in this lifetime on top of this whole wellness and wellbeing, like meant to like choose yourself, you know, to like kind of put yourself first unapologetically, but also even kind of within that, even in the design, it's like, it's shaman energy. Cool. Yeah. So, you know, I don't know. I'm always like, I don't know what that means to you, but it's like, it's just what I see. It's interesting too, with the nodes, you really kind of like step into that space 40 plus it's really after your Uranus opposition.
28:40That's when it becomes really prominent. It's like, it's time to start doing your Dharma, you know, but I, I give people prescriptions based around all of this stuff. So that was my question I was going to ask. So like, based on this, are you like, so based on this, I would be curious, like, you know, what you would tell me. And then also I was going to ask, do you ever look at someone's chart and kind of, I don't know how to like, are you like your face doesn't match your chart or like your face does match your chart or are you, you know what I mean? Like, are you ever like, Oh, like you should like accentuate this more.
29:13Like if you had like a stronger, this, that would like bring out this. I mean, I'm curious about that. You know, I don't actually don't, I don't think I use it in that way. It's more like, let me, let me prescribe you the, I would say the tools, the oils, the crystals, the practices, the things that are just going to enhance you. Like, like, like it would be like spiritual skincare that way, you know, like, let me, let me give you all like, if, you know, just as an esthetician would give you a whole regime, you know, it's like, I'm going to give you, okay, like I want you using this crystal and, you know, saying these affirmations or, you know, or even just giving you like a jumping off point to start working from, you know, because yeah, like, it's funny him saying jumping off point because you really are somebody who's meant to kind of like take the hand of people and leap into the void, like, you know, unafraid to like go there and do it first and make it less scary for other people.
30:08That's exactly what I do for my husband. Okay. That's why our partnership, I mean, like, that's just like, we have a very, like, we're very aligned and like following like more and more in love, the more kids and the more businesses we have, like, we're better now than we were when we met, like times a thousand, which is really cool. Like we support each other with work, like with scary stuff, like very. Yeah. Like when I asked him, do you like my teeth? He wouldn't tell me, but it wasn't because he didn't. He said, what do you think about them? He said, I care about how you feel. He said, I love you in all forms.
30:49You've always been so beautiful to me. If it makes you feel better, then that is what's important to me. Do I prefer one over the other? And by the way, he won't, he's not, even if he preferred my other teeth, he would never tell me that. That would hurt my feelings. He would never want my feelings to be hurt. Totally. Absolutely. And he has told me before when we were dating, I went to a doctor for some injections and he like filled my under eye. I just went for some Botox and like filled my under eye, like through my cheek. And it was like way too much. I didn't even go there for that. It was like this, like Beverly Hills doctor that like, you know, sometimes they'll look at you and make you feel so ugly.
31:28And he put all the, and I was like swollen. It was bad. And I saw him like a couple of weeks later, we were long distance at the time. And he was like, I'm horrified that somebody did that to your face. Like he was just like, you're beautiful and you're young and like, no one should make you feel like you need to get something like that done. Like it wasn't, you know, it came from this, like really, he wasn't like, you look bad, you know, but he was like a protective place. It was very protective. And so, you know, there's like this very loving, he, yeah, we have a very constructive relationship, but like take, you talk about like taking his hand and taking him into the void.
32:03Like, yeah, my God, like he was going to do the job that he had when we met, like forever. He was going to like die doing that job. And I was like, you're going to quit your dream job. And like, we're going to move and like, you're going to start your own business. And like, he's like, I mean, it's hard, but like all the time he's like, I'm doing this because of you, you know? I'm like, it's a very cool, it's a very cool partnership in that way. What's his sign? Leo. Oh, okay. Love that. You are unconscious son. So, you know, like your normal sun in your chart is Scorpio, but your unconscious is Leo.
32:32Oh, cool. I didn't even know that I had an unconscious sun. So it's like, that's like very going to be very attractive to like other people. Yeah. In design, you get like double of everything, which is amazing. So you can find out like, you're like, oh, that's what people like even see in you and how you radiate, you know, really brightly. It falls in your 10th house too, which is your career house. So it's like very, yeah. That's awesome. Yeah. This summer, don't let thinning hair hold you back. And one of my best friends had a brand called Brock Collection, which is out of business and impossible to find, but I have found multiple perfect Brock Collection dresses only literally on the RealReal.
35:04I love scouring the website because there are 10 ,000 new items every day. They have drops at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. EST. I shop and sell at the real world, which is great because I use all the money I make for my own clothes as credit to buy new fabulous things. I cannot believe how incredible the process is of selling at the real world. Like a cute angel girl was like on text with me, showed up at my house, took 10 bags, authenticated everything and uploaded it. And then I just get like an email every couple of days letting me know that my credit is through the roof. The whole process is really incredible.
35:44With up to 90 % off retail, you're going to finally get the pieces that you've been dreaming of from brands like Gucci, Fendi, Prada. And unlike other resale sites, everything is authenticated in person by luxury and fashion experts. They also have kids clothes, which is where I get a lot of my kids' fancy stuff that I absolutely do not want to pay full price for brand new because kids destroy everything that they were. So most of her fabulous like Bonpont and Ralph Lauren stuff is also from the RealReal. The RealReal is the world's largest and most trusted resource for authenticated luxury resale.

So with this discount, you're going to be able to get the perfect pair of shoes for$50. And it's literally a dream. TheRealReal.com slash BAST. Also, please know that BAST needs to be lowercase. So what would you prescribe to me based on my chart? What's something that I could do?
37:02Well, I have people fill out intake forms when when I, when I work with them, because it's like a lot of times they tell me everything that I need to know, you know, they don't know they're doing it, but yeah, of course they write me a little novel. And then I'm like, Oh, well, this is all the places in your chart that we're going to, you know, address. What would you say? If you don't mind my asking, what would you feel like your biggest thing is, you know, that you're either struggling with, or maybe a bit of a hangup or something that will help me formulate body or like face, like are we talking anything?
37:31anything well I mean my biggest hang up is that I am like need to like focus I need to be more focused and do more but I do I think that I'll tell you what my biggest hang up is my biggest hang up is that I've had such a contentious relationship with my body since I was very young and, you know, grew up in a society, you know, in the nineties and early two thousands where it was like thinness was, was just top tier. I mean, you know, this too, obviously you lived through this. So, you know, not having the genetic, like, you know, my dad was a big, he was the offensive lineman. Like my sister and I have always, and my brothers like have had to work very hard to have like the kind of bodies that we think we're supposed to have.
38:27And so, you know, I was prone to gaining weight. You know, I gained like 35 pounds my freshman year of high school. I gained a mature, you know, and then people would talk about it and they would say, what a shame it was that my body looked like that. Cause my face was so pretty, you know, it was like very openly talked about. And, and so I have like, you know, I don't speak kind things to my body, which has done so much for me. It is healthy and beautiful and giving you babies, made children and is like, you know, I have like a very healthy sex life with my husband. You know, it's not like things aren't working or, and so I think that's like my biggest hang up is just like being more like internally proud of my body and speaking to it in that way.
39:15Cause I say bad things about my body. Oh, girl. I'm like, same. Like I was like ballet dancer, anorexia, you know, Kate Moss era, that whole thing. You're like, no, there's nothing as there's no such thing. It's like thin enough, you know, you being a ballet dancer is like, that was like a trigger for me growing up. Cause that was my dream. And there was, I couldn't, there's so like, there are like, unless I'm very drunk, like I won't dance because I just feel very embarrassed about how my body looks. No. If you see me dancing, it's because I'm super fucked up. It's not from like a, it's not from a joy filled, like free place.
39:58It's joy filled and free because I'm, you know, inebriated. Oh man. I mean, I get it. I totally relate. Like I, it's interesting. So as you're saying this, I'm like, Oh, I want to come back to that whole like focusing thing. Let me, let me, let me speak on that really quick. And then I want to talk deeply about everything you just said. The focus, you actually have a trait in your chart that, and I always tell people, I'm like, I'm not, this is not medical information. I'm not diagnosing or anything, but it is very, it pops up in people's charts who maybe, maybe, maybe have ADD, ADHD. I do big time.
40:32Yeah. It is, is this whole thing about like focusing. It's almost like distracted, you know, shiny object syndrome and they have a hard time and you, you only have part of this. It's like, there's two sides to it and you've only got the one side and it's actually where this, where the planet Saturn is sitting in your chart. Saturn is like, you know, it's taskmaster. It's going to make things. So it's going to be like a bit more difficult, a little bit more like the personal trainer planet. So you've got that sitting in that particular area. So it's like the ability to focus, you know what I'm saying?
41:05It's like, so again, if you knew that early on, you're like, wow, okay. I'm just kind of predisposed. Like, I don't know to me, like if I were that person, me because I was told I was like, I was told I was done in third grade. And I was, you know, like I had teachers say horrible things to me about my lack of focus. And then I got real jacked up on Adderall in high school. So. Oh my God. Yeah. No. I took a mushroom gummy before we started talking. Cause I'm like, I need to be able to make sure that like, I mean, I'm just so spracked out all the time. Wow. Really hard for me to get stuff done.
41:37Well, I'm like, not to be like, Oh, it's all this, but it's like, you are predisposed to that. You also have outer vision cognition. So it's like seeing things probably is very like, you know, but you want to make, but outer vision is a, is a beautiful gift of like, it's just, everything's aesthetic, like beautiful, pleasing, everything needs to be lovely and all that. So I'm like, there's nothing, I'm always just telling people like, there's nothing wrong with you. We're just, we're being told the wrong things from the outside and then we internalize it. So it's like, so I just wanted to like touch on that.
42:07But as far as the perfection thing goes, or I should say the body image. That is a particular trait in the chart that is actually, I share it. I have it multiple times. And it's one that I, you know, kind of back when I said working in plastic surgery, like if I were in a clinic now, this is a trait that I would look out for in people because it is, I mean, 1000%, it is, it is, she's something else. That's all I will say. It's like when you have this trait, nothing is ever perfect. You could be perfect. It's not going to matter. It's incorrectly used on a personal level when you turn it inward on yourself or when you use it on other people, always seeing basically like everything's always wrong.
42:53There's faults in everything, but that's the truth. Right. And so like the healing of it, I'm, I always am like, okay, she's either a picky bitch or, you know, or I'm like, she's Anna Wintour. It's like, no, she's the editor in chief. Like she has the Midas touch. She knows, you know, I, I, I personify these things. So when I say she, I'm talking about, of course, I do that when I design dresses. I'm like that I call dresses. She, yes, I have names for I have nicknames for all of them and everything, but I'm like, yeah, this is my editor in chief. She actually just knows she's like, no, there's higher standards than that.
43:26Things could be better and seeing it that way. And also the acceptance of kind of, kind of the funny thing with this is like the highest expression of it is perfection, but it's the perfection in understanding nothing will ever be perfect. And I don't know when I learned that I was like, like, nothing's ever perfect. It was so free. Everything to me in the chart is just very freeing. It's like, as soon as I understand myself on that level and why I'm like so evangelical about it and want to share it with everybody. And I'm like, this to me is the key to beauty. It's like, we're all trying to perfect the outside and I have it so strongly in my chart.
43:59You have it when you realize you're doing that. And you know what I mean? You're just so hard on yourself. I've said about this particular trait, I would go, this is something that I feel for myself has kept me from enjoying life in a lot of ways. And instead, looking at it and being like, all right, cool. I just know the lighting might not be perfect here or this might not be or I have a little spot or a little something on my face. Okay, that's okay. you know you're like you're still probably doing better than 99 of people so like just relax yeah totally you know my husband is European and so I always find like being in in Europe it's like there's just not those hang-ups like it's just so different the American neuroticism and I and that's what I try to remind myself too it's like when when I'm super anxious and super crazy you know or anything like that it's like neuroses is not cute no no it's like as soon as you start kind of pull back from that.
44:59And, and you're like, wow, actually being very, I was thinking it's like easy breezy, beautiful, you know, like with yourself and just very natural and. Well, they know how much more attractive that is. And then when you really feel that way, like how much more you're calling into your life, really, you know, completely like David doesn't want to hear me say things about my body in that way, you know, and I have to remember outside of it not being okay because I need to love my body. It's like not an attractive quality in a partner, you know, like he never, he never talks about like, like he played soccer for a long time.
45:37So he has like very strong legs and like very big calves. And he just modeled for a brand in New York and they had him wearing shorts. And we were talking about it last night. He was like, oh man, he's like, I was wearing those shorts, my soccer legs, but it, he wasn't like, oh, I look stupid. he was like, that's what my legs look like. Like, you know what I mean? He was like proud of it. It was, it's like more matter of fact. It's like a description. It's not him speaking poorly about himself. Like he's never spoken poorly about himself in that way, you know? And so it is a very interesting thing when you have a partner, but even if you're just by yourself and you're dating someone, or even if you're single and you're trying to call someone in, it's like, you know, saying those things, like you're going to manifest them in the wrong way.
46:19Exactly. And I think we have to be so careful of how we speak to ourselves. Like you were saying about just going into those not good places. And I mean, that's huge. It's like catching yourself in the moment and actually adjusting how and what you're saying internally, that monologue that just goes on. For myself, that whole leaning to the depression side. And I'll be like, oh my gosh, if something, even if I'm not, it's not a bad thing, sometimes I'll be like, oh, I'm so sad. and I hear it in my head and I'm going, wait, wait, wait. No, I'm not. I just naturally gravitate toward that. And I was in that place for so many years.
46:56So now it's like, no, I'm like, I'm always have a different, different thing going on in my head, different affirmations. It's like, no, everything is always working out for me. You're happy. Things are good. And you have to, it's like, you have to be almost like aggressively, viciously optimistic because this world is just almost, I don't want to say trying to take you down, but there's so many things. It's not an easy place, especially right now. No, it's... Yeah, everything too. Everything. And I think, you know, you're a 2-4 profile. I'm a 4-1, so we share that 4, you know, where it's like, oh, it's just, it's very easy to be around 4s and they make people, they put people at ease and stuff.
47:38But there's like a protectiveness to that of like, Like I need to be around the right people. It's just very important. You know, like you want to, your connections are meant to come through the people that you already know. I always say there's somebody I know, and she made this great comment. She's also a four. And she was like, I only walk through open doors, meaning I only, I only go for things. I only go after things that people I know that want me and people have already kind of like opened that door and created that path for me. And so I really relate to that. And sometimes I think about it.
48:08I'm like, yeah, I want to know that the people that I spend time with or share anything with, they want you too. They care about you. Whereas I think when things get bigger and bigger, sometimes it's a little bit more prone to a lot of outside craziness and a lot of scrutiny. Talk to me more about the protocol that you do with your clients, because it's one thing to be like, okay, well, you have some acne and we need to handle that. And let's fix your skin barrier, but you do, I mean, you work with like sound and affirmations and lots. So like breakdown kind of like if someone was going to work with you, like what are all the different things that you integrate into practice?
48:49So like, you know, help create like that, like external beauty, but what like the rule, you know, in internal form. Yeah. If I were treating somebody like with a traditional facial treatment, you know, I'm very particular. I want to, I want to see their chart because again, I'm going to base things that I'm doing off of that. I work with a brand called little Fox. And so everything is about, it's, it's a sensorial experience where I came from such a clinical background and everything was like only if it works and stuff. And I'm like, Oh my God, no, it's see, it's about treating the body nicely rather than I'm just going to beat you up.
49:29It's always like my mentality. It's like, we're going to blast it off. We're going to rip it off. I was a laser queen, you know, where I'm like no mercy whatsoever. And I'm like, wow, I'm doing that to people. What I do to myself. So now it's like, I'm going to look at somebody's chart, especially if I know what's going on with them, you know, and pick out the correct frequencies to play while, while they're on the table, you know, like the sense it just, everything is so involved. The crystals that I'm going to use, the tuning forks, the singing bowls, literally it's like everything everything and then I am a Reiki master so I'm always like doing energy work through it and I mean even if I'm doing virtual sessions with people because I do auric facials that are like that's that can be done anywhere anytime you know it's like that's an energy treatment but my favorite thing I am a yoga nidra practitioner I did yoga teacher training a million years ago and that was the thing I really gravitated toward people were like oh I I love your voice.
50:26And so I do recorded meditations, but Nidra specifically is something special. It's like, you know, meditation helps you focus. Nidra actually helps you defocus and it puts your brain in a different state than meditation. You go down into Delta, which is the place where your body and everything starts to repair itself. Like you're basically turning your brain off. And so I will record and make these for people, you know, and according to their design, you know? So it's like, you would listen to like a sacral generator one that I have. And it's like, it's basically, it's got frequency layered in the background.
51:00It's got all these amazing affirmations. It's helping you bypass the conscious mind and like get into your, into your cells. But from a skincare perspective, you know, when you're in the Delta state, your body starts to, starts to produce melatonin and DHEA. It decreases inflammation. You go into like a cellular repair mode. And so I personally practice, well, I listen to myself every single night and I have for years, every single night, because I'm like, why would you not do this? This is like, this is repatterning and retraining my brain to very positive things. It's got a healing frequency, you know, in the background.
51:38And then, and then it's like, and then just scientifically they're proving this, you know, like I'm not making it up. No, my functional medicine doctor always talks about this stuff. Yeah. And so I'm like, oh, but anything for me, it's always like regular is not good enough. We have to like make it like super, super, super charged. So I call it energetic beauty sleep. That is my version of them because there's a million things kind of going on within them. And I'll do them for you. There'd be one that'd be like, oh, it's a self-love, self-healing, like your appearance, that relationship that you have.
52:13And I'm not joking. It's like, it's the most passive thing that you can do to like wake up prettier. Absolutely. And yet, you know what I mean? You didn't do anything. You just, you lay down and you just chill out. That's it. And you just listen, follow along. So I would do that on the treatment table as well. And what's really cool. Ancient yogis would say that, you know, it was equivalent to like three to four hours of deep sleep. Science now knows that for sure that it does put you in the Delta state. And so you're like, you come in for a 90 minute facial and you've left feeling like you've slept for four hours.
52:45right? This is like, you know, it's not run of the mill. That's for sure. And then that's the home care, how I kind of talk about my little pharmacy. It's like, these are all the things that I give people. And I'm like, okay, I want you to listen to this every night. And, you know, again, here's your oils and the crystals and the things that I want you doing. And these are the particular affirmations that we're going to use to work on what you have going on. And it's amazing. It's like people wind up feeling more beautiful from the inside out. Again, I will never tell you not to do all the other things because same, you know, like I'm still going to do them.
53:19But it's, but again, it's, I just see that, that need of it needing to come from somewhere. Like I said, it's the cherry on top rather than the source of your self-esteem. And because it's not, it's never going to be, you know, so I'm just very much about like the healing part of it. And only be it, but honestly, it's like, cause I needed this so bad myself. Like I'm my own first, first, you know, case study. That's incredible. So for anybody that's like interested in getting their chart done outside of working for you, it's like, is something that you could like look up online? What's that? To do their, to do their human design chart.
53:54Like, like if somebody is like interested, you can just look it up on my website. Yeah. You can, you can look it up online. I have it on my website. And then your website will like deep dive into like kind of what everything means and where you should go. Yeah. Yeah. And for, with my stuff too, it's like, I have a super extensive podcast. So if I said, okay, Pia, I want you to listen to the gate 43, that's your sun gate. We're really going to work on that. That's like half an hour of basically a reading just strictly on the energy of that. Or, okay, let's talk about that one that I said is so picky and picking itself apart.
54:31I'm like, you listen to that? And I've had people who have that one specifically that will message me. And they're like, that was so healing. Like just hearing everything that you had to say in that. So I love it because I'm like, it's not good enough. It's like, yeah, have a session or something, but it's almost like going to the esthetician. You're like, you had a treatment, but you still have to take care of your skin twice a day. So I need to know that I was very much intentional of like, I got to build that little pharmacy, that little library so that people have something to kind of like continue to carry them through their normal life.
55:05Yeah, of course. Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me today. I'm so happy that I found you. You are such a great Instagram follow. I'm going to link everything in the show notes, but for anybody listening who's interested, I mean, you have so much information to give on your website, Instagram, and the podcast. So also thank you for that. No, thank you so much for having me. It was a pleasure. Of course. Thank you so much. I really appreciate your time.
55:34And that, ladies and gentlemen, concludes this week's episode of Everything is the Best. I hope you enjoyed it. Please rate, review, subscribe, all that stuff. Maybe leave a comment. Mikaela blends the physical with the energetic, helping people align their outer appearance with their inner truth. A former medical aesthetician trained in Reiki and shadow work, she brings a deeply holistic approach to beauty, one rooted in energetic hygiene, cellular regeneration, and the power of knowing yourself.
In this conversation, we talk about what beauty really means, how Human Design can guide your skincare and self-care, and why true radiance comes from energetic integrity, not perfection. Mikaela also shares her personal journey from the world of traditional aesthetics to a more spiritual and intuitive practice — and how you can begin tuning into your own unique frequency.
