In short

Human Design as an “energetic blueprint” for self-alignment—especially for decision-making, parenting, relationships, and business. Emma argues it’s a permission slip to stop forcing and instead follow one’s type, authority, and strategy to create flow.

Guest background

Emma Dunwoody is a human design practitioner and behavioral-coaching professional. She works with clients and teaches Human Design through her work and book, Human Design Made Simple. She describes herself as a manifesting generator with emotional authority and discusses her family life (teen children plus a younger child in the past).

Key claims

Most people are conditioned out of their design; nearly everyone she works with is initially doing the “opposite” of what their chart suggests. Human Design uses birth date/time/place and (she claims) neutrino imprinting to generate a chart. Types: manifestors, generators, manifesting generators, projectors, reflectors (and hybrids). Authority guides decisions (e.g., sacral “yes/no” energy; emotional authority needs time).

Notable examples

Parenting—setting clear boundaries (bedtime, shared chores, politeness) while trusting intrinsic motivation; kids later choose Steiner school and improve academically. Personal—she stops trying to force consistency and instead focuses briefly when “the right thing” lights her up; she sleeps on big decisions to avoid regret. Business—she aligns her team and builds an AI chatbot (Maggie) based on her design and strategy.

0:00The following podcast is a Dear Media production.

0:14Hi, Emma. Hey. Nice to meet you in person. I was pregnant when we talked last time, right? Yeah. I remember I just had a flashback to that because I was in bed and I was like, why was I recording a podcast in bed? Because I was so pregnant.

0:27Emma Dunwoody:Yeah. Yeah, that's crazy. How old's the little one now? 15 months. Wow. Does it feel like it's just flying past? Yes, but I'm okay with that because I'm not like a newborn person. I am not. I was not a newborn person. I now have teenage children and they rock. Even when they're absolute idiots, they rock. Yeah. I prefer it. My husband this morning said something so cute. Like my son did something that was so fun. He's so fun and cool. Like we like him so much. And he did something that my husband looked at me, he goes, I can't wait for this kid to grow up. Like, I can't wait to like hang out with them.

1:02I feel like there's a lot of, do you encounter this with your clients, that there's a lot of people who have this like heavy hitting anxiety about like these, you'll never get this moment back and we need to be. And I think it controls, I watch it like control the narrative. And so you like let your kids do all these things that ultimately like aren't in their best interest out of this like weird anxiety that like you're missing out on something.

1:27Emma Dunwoody:Yeah. And you know what? Like ultimately that's just, we've been so conditioned not to be in the present moment, you know? And I think as a parent and I'm in every way, I'm the rebel. Like I do everything differently to everyone else type thing. And parenting is no exception. And one of the things with my kids is I've really let them, you know, learn who they are and it prevents that. Like it prevents that whole, like, I try not to put pressure on them. It's funny. We just had this situation this morning where I found out that my youngest son had been charging things to the business card. And I'm like, dude, like, and I just send him a text, right?

2:08Emma Dunwoody:I'm like, dude, you spent hundreds of dollars on. What was he buying? It was one of the games, like a, I can't even remember what it is, but just like a racing car game. And, and I just said to him, you know, I'll, we'll talk about it later. And he just sent me a text back going, I'm so sorry, mom. I thought that was my account. Just take the money out of my account. And I think that this is the thing is that when we trust who we are and our journey and that we don't know the answers and you know, we can't miss out. Like I've always been this way. Like even when I was learning and I was, you know, learning to training to become a behavioral coach and there's so much information to learn.

2:48Emma Dunwoody:And then there's so much to learn about human design. And I always had this principle, like, I know I'll get what I need. So it took that, that, that anxiety away of like, oh my God, I have to get it all right. And just kind of left it to myself in the universe with this belief that, you know what, I'm actually always going to get what I need. And as a manifesting generator, that's perfect because we're not here to get all the details. Yeah. I don't, I, I totally feel very like calm and chill and secure about my parenting journey. journey I don't feel can we use the word journey but I but I feel very there's no like anxiety around I also didn't feel rocked by it like everyone's like this completely changes I was cracked open like I don't feel that way at all I feel like there's a great new addition and I've just become more of who I am and I got these little homies next to me all the time yeah that are really cool, but are also scared of us.

3:48Like they should be, you know, not scared, but like, yeah, if my husband shoots my son a look across the table, like he will stop banging the fork on the ball.

3:57Emma Dunwoody:Yeah. Yeah. Like there's respect because he respects my husband and what I feel like there's a lot of nice. I want to see what my husband's human design chart is. Yeah. But I love that because I think, you know, I look at my kids now, they're 18 and 14 and I always get people say, oh my God, your kids, like they're amazing. And I'm like, yeah, they are. They really are. And if I reflect on what makes them amazing is again, because I've not forced things onto them. I've kind of allowed them to be who they are. And let me be clear. And I was saying this earlier, one of the challenges is that they push back and I'm like, dude, I just want to make you do that thing.

4:35Emma Dunwoody:But I'm like, okay, I get it. All right. Like I'm, you're not going to walk the dogs. I hear you. And, you know, inside of me, I'm like, just walk the goddamn dogs. Like if that was my parents, they would have made me do it. But even though it's frustrating in the moment, it's really taught them what I talk about as the intrinsic motivation. So because my kids trust themselves, they're the ones that motivate themselves. They don't need external motivation. And I look at this with my eldest who he, I actually got put both of the kids or at least got both of the kids into a Steiner school. I think you called them Rudolf Steiner schools here.

5:13Emma Dunwoody:And both of them were like, I don't want to go. I don't want to go. I'm like, okay, cool. Just go to the local high school then. And sure enough, less than 12 months later, my eldest goes, mom, I want to go to Steiner. And it's a really hard school to get into. And I'd already got them in once. And luckily, of course, because it was meant to be, got them in again. And he went from being like a D student to top of the class. And no, like it wasn't me saying you have to this, you have to that. This is what your future looks like. Think about your future. Work it out. Instead, I was letting him lead.

5:44Emma Dunwoody:You know, I'm very big on boundaries. So I set the standards for the family. Yeah, I'm wondering like how, so where does like, how do you, because obviously there, I mean, what's like the discipline and boundary and routine that has to happen to create that? Yeah. So I think a big part of it is I have rules and standards. So, So, and if those rules and standards, and it might be simple things like, you know, beds are made. One of my kids does not obey that at all at the moment. However, you know, the way we treat each other, things like bedtime's always been a non-negotiable. Things like we always take it in turns, anything that needs to be done around the house.

6:20Emma Dunwoody:Like all of us share that responsibility. You know, like whatever is a family responsibility is not my responsibility. It's our responsibility. So, and I think as they get older, you know, they can have more and more freedom when they were younger. You know, it's really important for the psyche of young children to have very clear boundaries because otherwise they feel unsafe. Yes. So, you know, having all of these boundaries like bedtimes and mealtimes and thank you and please, and that actually helps them feel really safe. My mom always told me that. Yeah. Yeah. And it's that thing that when you have young children that I especially would notice this with my second, like he was just a nightmare at home.

7:04Emma Dunwoody:And at school, we'd always get this feedback like he's just so good. It's funny when you hear I've had family members who that happens with their kids. And what's really important to understand is what it's telling you is at school, they're keeping it together. They're behaving. They're doing what they think they have to do. and then when they get home, they feel safe. So all of that goes and they just lose it and they're a total mess. So it's actually a huge compliment that they feel safe at home because any kids that are exposed to a lot of trauma, they won't do that at home because they don't feel safe.

7:37Emma Dunwoody:So it's actually, especially in young kids, like you want to see them fall apart and I get it as a mom, it's challenging at times, but it's actually them saying, you relax my nervous system, I feel safe here. I would much rather my kid be crazy at home and be well-behaved in the world. Like my biggest, our biggest, I say our, because obviously we're a family, is having like polite, grounded, well-behaved people that are members of society. Yeah. And not like the kid that was at the coffee shop two days ago who was walking in and out of the, I was like, whose fucking kid is this? Like, I couldn't believe how much space he took up, how rude he was screaming.

8:16The mom, there was no disciplining. I was like, anyway.

8:19Emma Dunwoody:Yeah. really drove me crazy. Okay. So for anybody who didn't listen to our first podcast, I want you and I, I think you, as I'm sure you've noticed in this being your full career, but human design is such a big topic right now. It really is. And so many people are starting to really, I think, as we're all trying to figure out who we are, have had more access to information. I can't, I hear it come up constantly. Yep. So will you please, again, it was the honors of explaining human design. Yeah, sure. So human design is your energetic blueprint. You know, a lot of people are going to tell you it's your soul's journey.

8:58Emma Dunwoody:It's this, it's that, but actually it's your energetic blueprint that sits below your behavior. So I often sort of introduce it as comparative to things like Myers-Briggs or Enneagram or disc profiling. Now, all of these are behavioral and personality profiling tools to help you understand who you are and why you do what you do. Now, human design actually sits below that. It's the thing that influences the personality and the behavior. So it's your energetic blueprint. And it's the thing that you are born into this world with. And it's the themes and the energies. It's going to be your biggest challenges, your greatest gifts, how your energy works in the world from maybe your purpose, from relationships.

9:43Emma Dunwoody:It's going to give you your ultimate cheat sheet. And often the thing I hear the most is it's a permission slip to be you. So anything that you do in your life, when you understand your design and how to be in alignment with it, it really takes you from this place of pushing, forcing, trying to make things happen and shifting you into flow and ease. And how do you calculate someone's, like what forms this? You need to get your accurate birth time and obviously birth date and where you were born. And we take this reading because it is a time where you actually are imprinted. So we've got these little subatomic particles called neutrinos.

10:25Emma Dunwoody:And, you know, for anyone who's a bit like, that's a bit woo, that's a bit out there. You can go and check out the, I think it's a hundred million dollar facility in Japan that studies neutrinos. They're really, really important to understand life. And what they do is they're really, really tiny. And as they move through everything, because they move through all matter, they kind of pick up and drop off things from where they've been. Now, when you're born, those neutrinos imprint you effectively with the energies of the universe. So what happens with human design, because it's a mathematical synthesis of astrology, the I Ching, the chakra system, and the Kabbalah, it literally maps or at least imprints you with all of these very specific and unique themes that make up you that make up your specific blueprint so once you're born you kind of start to lean into this blueprint and unfortunately most of us are conditioned out of it we're not told just be you or this is how you're designed to make decisions or these are your superpowers or yes school's going to exhaust you because you're not designed to be in school five days a week So it really ultimately, yeah, it comes from that moment in time.

11:42Emma Dunwoody:It gives you a chart. Then you learn how to operate in alignment with what is truly you.

11:55Let me tell you about sous vide, the easiest way to save time in the kitchen and have effortless home cooked meals. It's a smart countertop oven and a flexible meal delivery service. You have two options here. The sous vide kitchen robot has a built-in refrigeration so you can set up dinner in the morning and sous vide will keep it cold until it's time to cook. You don't even have to be home to start it. So the sous vide kitchen robot is its own amazing machine and it has tons of different settings, like it's an air fryer. It can cook any recipe. And then if you also get the meal service, It's super fast and easy to set up.

12:29You put the ingredients in the pans. You tap the meal card to the appliance. It pulls up all the cooking info for your meal. And then you just set what time you want the food to be ready. You go on about your day. So you can put it in in the morning when you go to work. And by the time you get home, you have a warm, perfectly cooked meal. There's no guesswork. It's really incredible. The chef-crafted meals are delivered frozen to your door. So they last. They don't have to be eaten immediately, which I am obsessed with. There are over 50 meals to choose from. Italian classics, keto-friendly recipes, and new menu items are added every week.

12:57The kitchen robot fits on your counter perfectly. Couldn't cook any recipe, not just Subi meals. It has 15 cook modes, including air fry and slow cook. So it replaces a lot of the single use kitchen gadgets that you have. It also has two cooking zones. So you can cook two different things at the same time. Isn't that unbelievable? It's a really convenient solution for busy weeknights when you don't have the time or energy to cook. Suvi offers a hundred day risk-free trial. So you have absolutely nothing to lose. So see you then.

16:16I need to do this for my kids and my husband because I feel like it must be so helpful to understand how people operate as a family unit, right?

16:23Emma Dunwoody:Yeah, 100%. I mean, we're a house full of manifesting generators. So you can do your animals as well. So your cats, your dogs, your horses. And we have all the adults in the house are all generators or manifesting generators. So predominantly manifesting generators, except one generator. Then we have a little generator dog. And then we have a reflector border collie. And this poor dog, like he's unhinged, like he cannot sit still. And it's because he's taking in all of our energy. How do you know the time that your dogs were born? Well, both of our dogs came from breeders. So our breeders knew the time.

16:56I have a slew of shelter dogs.

16:59Emma Dunwoody:Yeah, but you can kind of play around with it. And most animals are reflectors. So it's kind of weird that, you know, we have a generator dog. And I also have a generator horse. So, yeah. That's really cool. Yeah, it's pretty cool. And how many different types of human design are there? So we have four types and one's a hybrid. We have the manifestors. They're our initiators. They're the ones that like start something. So the guy who actually bought human design to the world was a manifestor. Yeah, of course. Then we have our generators and they're here to build. So once they're inspired into action, They just want to build it.

17:35Emma Dunwoody:They want to, basically, I often say they're the ones building the new world, building the new paradigm, and it's all coming from a place of what lights them up. So if you think about this era that we're coming out of, like the industrial revolution, this huge growth, it's all these generators being forced to use their life force energy kind of against their will because it doesn't light them up. So that's why we're seeing all of this, you know, all of these entrepreneurs, all of these different industries, all of these things happening. it's because the generators are actually starting to follow what lights them up.

18:06Emma Dunwoody:Then we have the manifesting generators which are part generator. They're fundamentally generator but they're also a bit manifester and they're our non-linear people. They're the ones that kind of jump from one thing to the next. They're multi-passionate and they're kind of here to demonstrate human potential. They're those we will often describe ourselves as too much or people will say you're just too much because... Is that what I am? You're a generator I believe. Let me just double check. I was like, I've been described as too much for 40 years. But it is really interesting. And again, this is why I'm so fascinated with human design is because often when we look at our type, we might not resonate.

18:43Emma Dunwoody:We go, yeah, I kind of resonate, but those other types resonate. So when we go deeper into the chart, then we're kind of, we can see the details. And it's interesting that you say that because you actually have one of the channels, at least one of the gates that talks a lot to MG. So it's the most powerful gate and you've got it in two channels. So there is that almost too much energy in you, even though you're not a manifesting generator. And then we have projectors. So with projectors, they're our guides. So if the manifestors have initiated, then the generators and manifesting generators have built it.

19:15Emma Dunwoody:Then our projectors look at what we've built, what we've initiated and say, hey, there's a much more efficient way for you to use your energy. And that could be anything. That could be from tech to relationships to building a business. so they can see super deep into the other and improve on the way that energy is being used. And then we have reflectors. So as we're, you know, manifestor generator, manifesting generator, projector, we're doing our work, the reflectors are reflecting the truth. So they're actually showing us exactly where we are, what's really happening. So that can be in a relationship, that can be in a family, that can be in a workplace or a community.

19:53Emma Dunwoody:And whatever you think that reflector is or how they are, they're actually reflecting that relationship or community, not actually who they specifically are. So these are the people that are really showing us the truth. Have you found that each of these categories or titles have like, have you noticed that they're in similar industries? Yeah, great question. And no. So I think, you know, I did a lot of, I used a lot of profiling tools in the past and one in particular was eDisk. And you could literally look at the tech industry, let's say, and go, wow, there's so many C's in this area. Or you could look at it and it was so easy to pick them in the room.

20:35Emma Dunwoody:That's another reason why I love human design is it's so specific that it's not easy to pick. Yeah. So it isn't necessarily, but what you will find, like an interesting thing that we've noticed, we're just about to run a retreat here in the US. and although manifesting generate sorry manifestors are about 10 of the global population so we'll often have one on retreat but we have three and this is the first time we've done this topic so it's specifically business focused so of course we have three manifestors because that that energy is going to not only are we going to help them build their business but they're actually going to initiate us into what our business retreats will look like oh wow so it's not necessarily the industry, but let's say maybe where you're at or like projectors will often show up when you're ready to improve.

21:26Emma Dunwoody:Like where does this need to be improved? And when you started doing this with your clients, have you noticed like how often did you notice that people had just put them, were just doing the opposite of what they were supposed to be doing for their human design? Almost 100 % of the time. Wow, 100%. Yeah, especially in the beginning because now I work with a lot of people who have already done a lot of work. So visionaries that have done a lot of work. So it's not as significant. But I think the thing that is most, it was my story and it's the thing I see a lot, is especially people who've done a lot of personal development, they are working really hard to fix something specific.

22:01Emma Dunwoody:And when they come to human design, they realize that's actually their superpower. The reason they can't fix it is it's because who they are, they're expressing it most often from the shadow and they just need to, you know, let go of the shadow and transform it into this higher expression. But it's most often their superpower. Can you give an example of that? So for me, one of the big things I think about in my advertising career, I was this person, like I just, like if I wasn't interested, I just couldn't focus. That's how I am. And I would be constantly trying to focus on what I should be focusing on.

22:31Emma Dunwoody:But the moment there was something I was really excited about. You were all about it. Like you couldn't break my focus if you tried. So I was always trying to build consistency, like build this consistent focus. But when I came to human design, I discovered I'm a manifesting generator. So I'm not meant to be consistent. in the masculine ways. The masculine way is this 24-hour energetic cycle. Ours is a 28-day. Then if you're a manifesting generator, you're going to skip from one thing to the next to the next. I'm also an emotional authority, so my consistency looks very different to everybody else's.

23:04Emma Dunwoody:And then I actually realized that I have the gate of focus. So the thing is, the moment I'm focused on the correct thing, I'm an immovable force. So once I started letting go of the things that I just not lit up by, all of a sudden my focus was my superpower. And I literally, I'll focus on something for a really short period of time, smash it out, it's done, move on. That's how I am. So again, it's like I understood who I am at my energetic core and just stopped doing the things that I thought I should do. And now I have to see if you have the nine. You do. You have the gate nine in your Saturn.

23:41Emma Dunwoody:So, you know, a lot of that and in the gate in the line five so line five often gives us like solutions it's also leadership energy and in satin so when you focus on the wrong things or when you allow yourself to get distracted by the small things that don't matter that's when you're going to be hit with the biggest consequences yeah that's happened and still does that's what I talk about in therapy all the time I'm like why we was cute my therapist this week was like you need she's like there's I'm setting up businesses right now like we're I'm raising I'm about to raise money for another for a brand that we've had for a while and but there's like you know annoying things that I need to do that are not for me and number you know things that I get really avoidant by and I put off and whatever and she was like you need to make these things romantic she's like once you get to the other side, you're not going to have to do them.

24:35And you can only just be like the fun, creative person making these decisions, like do what works for you. But she was like, in the meantime, like make it, put on music, light a candle, make it romantic. Yeah. She's like woo yourself into getting that done.

24:46Emma Dunwoody:Yeah. And I think there's like, there's a lot of value in that. You know, if you can't literally give it to someone else to do, then you want to make it fun. You want to make it, and I'm looking at your profile now, because this will often give us like a lot of clues into how specifically. So you're aligned too. So there is a really important piece for you that you have to follow what's easy. So once something gets hard, you really want to think, okay, am I trying to push something, force something? You've got the gate 34 in two channels and it's the shadow of force. So where am I forcing this?

25:19Emma Dunwoody:Where am I actually not in my strength? My strength is I allow it to come to me as opposed to me chasing after it. So yeah, again, it's, you know, are there places that you can let go of it? Are there places where you can delegate? And if you can't, then you want to have as much fun as you can with it. So fascinating. I think the other piece, sorry to interrupt, but the other piece is like, how can you do these things in relationship? Because you're aligned, aligned four. So if you were doing them in relationship, that would always be fun because relationships, good relationships, aligned relationships for you are going to make, you know, anything that you do more enjoyable.

25:55Emma Dunwoody:I love working. I hate being at home working by myself. Yeah. Sucks. Yeah. Like I'm happy that we all can like make these like easier schedules for ourselves post COVID. But I'm like, I literally sit at my desk and I'm like, where is everybody? Yeah, exactly. The line four needs a buddy. It's like you just you just need a buddy. Yeah. And I was saying that like earlier this morning, too, I was like talking to a friend of mine. I was like, the first thing I want to do with this company is I want to find my person. Like I want to find my CEO so I can only be creative. I just want someone to tell me what to do, but I want that to just be like, I want that to be my person.

26:29Emma Dunwoody:Yeah. That's literally, like, that's me. And my person is sitting over there. She literally is the COO of my business. She runs everything in the back end. I'm like, can I just be the show pony? Yeah, just make you the show pony. Yeah. Like, this is literally what I want to do. And that is the role of the visionary. Like, that's what we're, as visionaries, that's what we're here to do. We're not here to get into the nitty gritty. We're here to be out the front. And I think that's a lot of where we focus with human design and business, really helping people to step into that visionary and to attract their tailor.

30:31Your book, which congratulations, your book is out. Thank you. Human Design Made Simple, which is a gift to all of us, right? Because if you're in your 20s and you're listening to this and you're like, maybe I don't have, you know, the privilege to stop the job that I'm doing right now because, you know, people have to pay rent. But this is really good to understand fundamentally who you are and start advocating for yourself within your workplace, shifting roles, or if you're thinking, obviously, you know, if you're unhappy in your job, what your next job looks like. So talk to me about like the process of decoding, you know, if I'm at home or if I'm reading your book, it's like, what do you hope that people really take away from this?

31:14Emma Dunwoody:Well, ultimately, like our big grand plan is that human design goes mainstream. And the whole idea of that is that we stop trying to be who we're not. we all ultimately are a tiny puzzle piece in this huge puzzle that is the human race so what it's going to help you do like the book itself is going to break down all the macro parts of your design meaning that all of a sudden you're going to understand okay this is what I have energy for this is the way I'm designed to make decisions and it's going to give you the opportunity to even discuss that with you know your boss where you work like if you're a projector you're not designed to work nine to five, five days a week.

31:56Emma Dunwoody:You're just not. So you're going to burn yourself out. But you'll also tend to be the person that works two hours a day and does just as much as everyone else. So it helps you actually understand how your energy is designed. You know, as you said, advocate for yourself. Like, could I, like I, I knew a really successful salesperson that would work two hours a day would be the leading salesperson, but just went out for coffee the rest of the day. Like, you know, you know, meetings, client meetings, But again, that's how the projector energy works. So in the inner career space, it's also going to tell you, you know, when to jump and when not to jump.

32:30Emma Dunwoody:If you're a generator, manifesting generator, a projector, you're always waiting for something external of you to say, it's time. It's time to leave. It's time to move on. Instead of thinking, should I, shouldn't I, what should I do? And ultimately, when you start to experiment, the book's broken down to make it so simple that You can do one experiment at a time. So you'd start with your type, for example, and really understanding how your energy is designed to operate. And there's just in the book how to experiment. What does that actually mean? How does my day change? And what you're looking for is, well, when I do these things, when I experiment with these things, does my life get better?

33:09Emma Dunwoody:Because if it does, then you're like, brilliant. I'm just going to keep doing more of it and get better and better at it. Do you have an example of an experiment today? Well, I would say authority is one of our most important because our authority is how we make decisions. And one of the big things with human design is about moving from the head to the body. So our body, mind, spirit is always guiding us in the right direction. Our subconscious mind is always making decisions from the past. It's looking to the information it already has to make decisions. But yet we're conditioned to make logical decisions.

33:43Emma Dunwoody:Think about it. What do you want? What should you do? Think about the future. whereas human design is all about okay your authority is intrinsically always guiding you so the one of the first experiments I recommend everyone do is just experiment with your authority so for me personally I'm an emotional authority so being a manifesting generator I've got the fastest channel in the design things I want things to move really quickly and they often do however for me to make the best decisions I need to sleep on it so any big decision I need time I need to go slower. And when I started doing that, I was like, wow, I've stopped doing that saying yes, waking up with regret the next day.

34:23Emma Dunwoody:Now I'm just like, I'll sleep on it. I'll come back to you. And all of a sudden I'm doing less, but receiving more. So for you, are you sacral? Let's have a look. Yeah. So you're sacral. So here I am slowing down. I want to sleep on it. You're every second, every moment, your gut saying, uh-huh, I got energy for that. Uh-uh, I don't. Your mind doesn't know why. And it's really important that you don't try and, you know, push your mind to know why. Because ultimately what your body's telling you or authority's telling you is I have energy for this. This is the next step in my evolution. This is the next step in my path because I've got energy for it.

34:58Emma Dunwoody:But if I don't and you're just like, or you move away from something, then you really need to say no. And often the challenge with a sacral is they know what they do and don't have energy for, but they're so used to overriding it. So then they get straight into their head, you know, they reason and then they make a different decision. So for you, it's really important just to trust the gut in every moment. Just go with, yep, I've got energy for it. No, I don't. And then all of a sudden you'll just notice that you say no a lot more than you used to. And when you do say yes, it's a bigger leap. That decision will get you where you're going faster with greater flow.

35:36So it's so funny when things come up multiple, like I had a conversation today about following my gut. It's just so interesting how that always happens.

35:47Emma Dunwoody:And this is the thing, I think the other thing that's beautiful about human design is the detail in which it breaks everything down. So one of the things about you is you actually have what we call a lot of mental definition. You've got the head defined, the asana defined, and you've got a channel to the throat. So your thinking is a superpower. You've got this very clear pathway, the way you think. And it's almost frustrating to you that why doesn't everyone think this? Why doesn't everyone else see this this way? And it's because not that many people actually have mental definition. So you have this superpower and it feels easy for you to use it as a decision making tool for you.

36:23Emma Dunwoody:But it's not. It's a gift that you give to others. It's how you might use it in the business to build strategy or you actually have a channel the 4323 which is called genius to freak so which is so fascinating because what genius to freak okay so i'm going to explain don't worry i was like did i just hear you correctly but and this channel i see so often in highly successful people and what it's all about is that you have this ability to take in such complex information and then you can actually say that doesn't matter that doesn't matter. That doesn't matter. And simplify it down so that people can understand it.

37:05Emma Dunwoody:Now, and that's the genius. You know where I'm really good at that is with when my girlfriends bring me relationship issues. Yep. Well, and that's your, so here, this is a perfect example. So superpower, 2343, that's a superpower of yours. Then your line four, you're always going to be good at relationships because it's a lot, it's how you move through life. Your relationship. through my 20s but yeah well but it still taught you a lot because your line four is always the relationships is always creating safety in your life so what you learn in your 20s was this doesn't make me feel safe this doesn't make me feel safe this doesn't make so they're the things to get rid of right but yeah so that's how your your how your profile the two numbers that you have play into your superpower of the 2343 because you bring it directly to relationships but the so the genius is when you take the time to actually clarify, make sense of, get rid of whatever that thing is.

38:00Emma Dunwoody:So you create the genius. But if you speak too soon, if you jump on it, you're like, it makes, you know, it's clear to me in my head. But if you just jump on it and try and spit it out before it's quite ready, that's when it sounds like freak because everyone's like, I don't understand what you're talking about because you're still in the complexity that everyone else doesn't understand. But to you, it's clear. Does that make sense? Yeah, yeah. I often find that that's like how the conversations go with my husband and I. Yeah. Where he'll be like, oh, I am not like, you know, time will pass. And he's like, no, I now I understand these things.

38:30But it's and I'm always telling him that things aren't I'm like, you're overcomplicating that. Yes. Yeah. It's like he told me so funny. Two days ago, we were talking about dogs and I was like, I love Cane Corsos. I've always wanted a Cane Corsa. And then I went to a adoption event. just we have three dogs they don't need another dog but we went to an adoption event because I was like oh I'll network the dogs and post them on Instagram and you know tell people that it's here and there was a conicorso and now he's at our house I love and again that's the sacral

39:00Emma Dunwoody:response right there you know like the mind goes we do not need another dog this is no it's a it's a no there was no we we were far past even being rational yeah but but this is the thing you know When you think about, to you, that was just a dog. I'm sure it's not just a dog, but you know what I mean? You didn't have any great attachment. But that's actually the way you create success in all areas of your life. This is how we manifest. We set an intention. I want this particular type of dog. And then because you're not attached to it, it just goes out. The universe does its work and then it guides you through your authority.

39:34Emma Dunwoody:You're like, oh, here's your dog. This is what you wanted. And it's exactly the same with business or relationships or whatever it is. when we actually realize that there is this easy way where we can set an intention, follow our design, follow our authority, follow our strategy. And then all of a sudden it just shows up in our life and we just have this clarity like, okay, well, that's the thing. And it's that shift from forcing, chasing, hunting stuff down, making things happen to actually magnetizing whatever your definition of success is to you. God, that's so incredible. Yeah, it's pretty cool.

40:08I've noticed I've been able to do it a lot lately and it feels really like a beautiful shift into like my age too now because I'll be 39 next week and I'm like, okay, I've like, you know, I did 10 years of being 20 and that was really interesting and I feel like I set everything up, I'll set everything up in my 30s and now I'm like, I really feel like I'm calling it all in. Like the work has been done and now I can, I can call it in.

40:36Emma Dunwoody:Yeah. And you're getting close to a really cool transformation. It's like your Uranus opposition, which happened in our early 40s, is the Uranus opposition. Okay. And it's all about internal revolution. I've never heard about this. Everybody always talks about your Saturn return. Yeah. Saturn returns, like it just kicks you in the butt and you're just like, oh my God. Why isn't everybody talking about this? Because everyone should be so excited to, I mean, I feel excited to be in my 40s. Okay, describe it. Your 40s are the best. That's how I feel. I just turned 50 and my 40s were epic and I do feel like my 50s are going to be even better.

41:11That's how I feel too.

41:12Emma Dunwoody:I'm always just like, it's just going to get better and better. Yeah. So Uranus opposition. So the planet Uranus is revolution, uniqueness. It's, you know, a bit crazy out there. It doesn't care. It's all about who am I and how am I going to impact the world? And in our early 40s, we go through this Uranus opposition, but Uranus is a really slow moving planet. So we often will have like two and a half years in, hit our peak at around 42 and then two and a half years out. And it's this moment in time where all of a sudden we go, and not necessarily in your case, because you've done the work already, but it's this time where people wake up and go, hang on a second, this isn't what I want.

41:48Emma Dunwoody:This isn't who I am. And they're also like, but who am I? So it's the time where you really start to look at, well, what is my uniqueness? What, you know, what is, who do I want to be? How do I want to impact this world? And when you're in, you know, not kind of resisting letting go of the old conditioned version of yourself, when you're with it, it's this great time of really working out like, who am I? Like, what is my uniqueness? Who do I want to be in the world? So it's a really, really cool time. That's so funny because I felt this really cool shift happen. Yeah.

42:30There's nothing better than a little treat. I worked out with one of my best friends this morning and she was like, you know what I love about you? You love a little treat at the end of the day. 44:08You can hear I'm a little congested and it was a cold that caused a lot of chaos and a lot of fevers and took kids out of school for a week. And so as soon as she came home with a stuffy nose, I gave her, I gave myself, I gave Carlo, I gave Davide and I gave my mom the kick-ass immune activator from Wish Garden Herbs. And we got nothing more than a stuffy nose. And as we gear up for the holidays, I am doing my best to make sure that we stay at this level because we have a million events. Obviously it's Thanksgiving this week. Like I didn't want us to be a bunch of sick people. and all we have is a slight stuffy nose.

44:50Wish Gardens Kick-Ass Immune Activator is one of the best things that's happened to our family. I founded it at Erewhon last year when we were all really sick. And I was like, is there anything here that like consistently can work for adults and children because they have a children's formula? And the second I feel a little tickle or a little stuffy note, if I load us all up with the Kick-Ass Immune, we are cruising. It's an herbal immune support that actually works from a woman-owned family-run company that's been perfecting their formulas for decades. They also have something that prevents hangovers, by the way.

45:47So what is it like knowing your chart and then doing human design as this must be like an interesting, it must be really interesting to know yourself that well to then be able to teach everybody else. So how do you practice your own design, like with the way that you've set up your business and how you work?

46:06Emma Dunwoody:Yeah, look, my entire business is aligned to my design. You know, like we have a really big business but we have a core team of three of us because the last thing I want is a huge team I'm not interested I'm a manifesting generator I want freedom I want to be able to travel the world I want to turn on dime I want to change my mind I want to do this do that so the whole business has been set up in alignment with me and one of the cool things that's just happened recently is we again following my strategy and authority I'm like we need to make our own chat bot. That's what we need to do. And as soon as I mentioned it, my team, again, two manifesting generators, one of them with mental definition that's already building something that you didn't even know, you know, what it was.

46:47Emma Dunwoody:And I'm like, hey, we got to build this thing. And she's like, I think we're already building. I'm like, okay, cool, let's do it. So we build Maggie and we put all my human design IP in there. We put all of our business strategy in there. We put all of our marketing, you know, strategy, everything in it. And all of a sudden we now have this tool that basically gives us the freedom to do what we want, when we want, because she helps us build the business and she's now helping everyone else build their business. And we had no like goal on the strategy to go, hey, we need to build this thing that is going to increase revenue, but it's not something that any of us have to be present for.

47:22And it just showed up, you know, and it just

47:25Emma Dunwoody:happens over and over and over again. My book, I declared on my podcast a couple of years ago, okay, I think I'm ready to write a book. Then a friend of mine introduced me to a book agent. Then I happened to be in Spain. The book agent was in London. At this time, I'm like, oh, can I just, I'll see you on the way back. I'll drop past London. Got to meet a couple of publishers. One of them was one of the imprints at Penguin. Signed a publisher. You know, all of a sudden the book was done. Like it just, like every step just showed up. And it's because I'm following my strategy and authority. And that's just happened over and over and over again.

48:01Emma Dunwoody:Because for me, business isn't something that I want to work in every day. I just don't. I want freedom. I want to be traveling the world. I want to be available to my kids. So ultimately my entire life has been built around my design. And it's crazy because I can't not be me. And I have definitely got to that place and people will say, wow, you're really the same person no matter where I meet you. You're the same. I'm like, yeah, on the podcast, you know, as a, you know, teaching inside my HDX community, here with you, I'm just the same person. And I think that's the beauty of human design is it means that we just take off all the masks.

48:38Emma Dunwoody:We love, trust, and accept ourselves as we are because we're like, oh, what a relief. I don't have to make all that effort anymore. And I know for me, I was really challenged early on with detail. I really thought, how can I possibly create success when I just don't care about so much of the detail. And of course, I call in a profile that's a 5-1 profile. So she's all about detail. In fact, then we call in the other member of our team and she's a line one as well. So my team has got what I don't have. And it was really funny. I was talking to a projector about business and building a team and she's like, so I need a manifesting generator on my team.

49:17Emma Dunwoody:I'm like, no, like we would fry your brain. The way we work, like everything's done at the last minute, you know, like Taylor's always talking about how she needs time pressure and I hate time pressure, can't think straight. But the thing is, is that we now have this well-oiled machine that we're all really operating from our authenticity. So, you know, yeah, it feels great for us. We're three manifesting generators that other people would be like, that's intense. That's way too much. Like, how do you do all of that at once? Like, it's easy. Whereas let's say we have a projector a visionary, they're going to want, and maybe a manifesting generator, but their team is going to be built by people who are really good at being guided because that's their skill, you know, whereas especially for me and really deeper into my design, I'm, you know, my leadership style is alpha.

50:05Emma Dunwoody:So I sit outside of the group. I'm kind of like, I'm just going to go over here and do my thing. And I also have this team that are very initiative driven and they're quite fine. They don't need me to tell them what to do. I don't micromanage. Whereas there's a lot of other people if you're building a team, they'd freak out with the lack of hands-on that I am with them. I'm just like, you do you, boo. So again, the beauty of human design is that we can create a business or even relationships, understanding relationships. We can build it in a way that we're designed to be our most authentic self and the people around us can also be valued for their most authentic self.

50:41I really want to do this for my husband and my kids because I feel like I can optimize our relationship and how I parent my children. I know, what have you noticed? How have you been able to like apply this to parenting?

50:52Emma Dunwoody:Yeah. So like inside our community, we've done a lot around parenting because I've really, and I've got two manifesting generators, so they need so much freedom. And my youngest is a two-four like you and two-fours, they can't stand authority. They can't be told what to do. They want to do it their own way. They don't want to learn from teachers. They want to learn from their peers. And it set me free because I'm like, okay, I am not going to try and force you to obey the system. I'm going to instead empower you by following what lights you up. So for him, music's a really big deal for him. So every time he wanted to learn a new instrument, I would just be like, okay, cool.

51:33Emma Dunwoody:How do you want to learn it this time? And when he got a piano, he's like, I just want to get this app. and I got in this app before he even had the app in 24 hours he taught himself how to play the tune to Harry Potter now yep 100 % just by the sound of it and and didn't know how to play a piano so again knowing that line too just let him work out let his natural talent god now I'm thinking I need to do this so bad for my daughter because she has autism and she's so fucking smart. Exactly. And in my opinion, and it's just my opinion, but I have really good results around me. Like one of the big things for you with her to understand is that she's perfect.

52:15Emma Dunwoody:The system is broken. Totally. And when you understand that she has her own unique way of showing up and being her, I mean, maybe she's a projector. And the moment all this energy is like trying to push her forward, she's like, whoa, back up, you know? And then when you go deeper into what specifically her gates are, then you can really understand like what's going on. And I think ultimately when we're raising kids, well, in fact, in life, we see the world as we are, not as it is. So, you know, I was raised in a very strict family. This is what you do. This is where you go. and when I first started where my kids were quite little I'm like well you have to have rules and you have to abide by them and you have to and then over time especially once human design came into my life I'm like oh whoa like that's only teaching them or at least conditioning them to be someone that they're not so instead I'm going to step back and say okay well really getting to know my kids at a really deep level.

53:19Emma Dunwoody:And I remember my eldest, he probably was about 14. And I was talking to him about his incarnation cross. Now, incarnation cross is, you know, really linked to our genius, to our purpose. And it's not something that we do. It's this aura, so our energetic bubble that we walk around in all the time. It's always doing this work. And I remember explaining to him that he's the cross of the sleeping phoenix. And I was saying like, these are people that help people rise from the ashes. And, you know, having this big conversation, he just looked at me and he said, so mom, does that mean I need to learn how to rise from the ashes?

53:55Emma Dunwoody:And I was like, whoa, like, that's amazing. Yes, mate, you do. And this kid, I remember, and in fact, he must have been 12. He must have been even earlier. And he is a kid that, you know, he has kind of had anxiety. He's been around the edge of depression. He's, you know, been in these mental states and he's actually worked himself out of it. Yes, he's used me a lot as a resource. However, he's been very aware that there's this path about him learning how to be sovereign, to be aligned, to have healthy mental, you know, mental health. So now he's this kid that's just like all he absolutely magnetizes the, especially the the boys around him that are lost that, you know, he had this one friend, exactly right.

54:41Emma Dunwoody:I had this one friend when we first moved to Byron Bay, who his dad had committed suicide and Coop, you know, Coop didn't do anything to actively, you know, help him, but he was the person that this kid lent on and he would ask questions. He would talk about it. And he was like, wow, you're the only one that talks to me about my dad's suicide. Everyone else just avoids the topic. But because Coop was really aware of it and he'd done his own mental health journey, like he was just in his aligned energy, helping this kid feel better and move through it, you know, and that we're all doing that all the time.

55:18Emma Dunwoody:And when we actually raise our kids in alignment, then, you know, all of a sudden they trust themselves. And that's what we want. We want to love, trust and accept ourselves. So if we're raising our kids to do that, then we don't have to clean that. They don't have to clean up all the conditioning that we've had to clean up. So fascinating because I am so like, I don't, I feel like my husband are pretty strict. Like we're kind of like, yeah, like my son was like opening it. Like he's not allowed to play with the microwave because obviously he's putting metal things in there, you know? And so I think it's just very interesting.

55:54It'll be very interesting for us to, to find the balance between like how we parent them. Yeah. It was like this morning, he wouldn't stop and he wasn't listening. And so, you know, I picked him up and removed him. I said, we don't do that. You know, and then I got him on to something else, but then he went back to it and my husband was like, looked at him and he was like, and he just, you know, he turned around, and he got scared and he was like, enough, you know? And so he had this moment and I was like, like that to me, I was like, good. Like, there's a, there he's like understanding that authority is there but I wonder listen also he's a baby but I wonder also if if I if we knew like what he I wonder what like a different answer to that would be yeah and by the way him playing with the microwave is extremely dangerous because exactly

56:43Emma Dunwoody:and I was gonna say all kids need to understand that there's boundaries like that like they need to you know he would never raise his voice but we were like he put a metal container in there the other day and knows how to turn it on and I was like that would have been you know yeah 100 % We took the tape off. We tried to tape it. We put the things on. Yeah. Yeah. But it's going to be very, I'm so excited. I think it'd be great. Like imagine if you. To be in like a flow state with how I communicate with my kids. Yeah. And getting it. Like the other thing, one of the really big things to understand is how we best know what's correct for us.

57:13Emma Dunwoody:So the questions that we ask. So I know with my kids that yes, no questions. Questions that are chunked down. Big open-ended questions. They're not good for generators or manifesting generators. They're like, I don't know. but if you're a manifestor projector or reflector just give them a big open-ended question and let them meander through the answer and they'll find the answer so that's really helpful with our kids so we don't actually ask them questions that are confusing them before they even get to the answer you know or what is their with their profile so I knew with my eldest who has a line one that he was going to go internal because line ones go internal so you don't know what's going on so I taught him really young how to talk about how he feels whereas my second son is a line two so he you know how he feels because he expresses outwardly so it's not like he will naturally learn to express himself a little bit more I also know you know I I'm divorced so when we first separated both my boys are line fours and I knew okay the number one thing I need to take care of is maintaining a really healthy, strong relationship, individual relationship with my children because their safety comes from relationships.

58:22Emma Dunwoody:So it almost didn't matter what else fell apart as long as that relationship was maintained. And sure enough, that helped them navigate through. So when we start to understand these deeper details about children, then we do, we parent them really, really differently. Like if you've got a manifestor child, you know, a baby, you're like, wow, this baby is a rock star, like peaceful. It just, you know, it does what it like, it just sleeps and eats. And, but the manifestors are energetically independent. So the moment they get to toddlers and I have a dear friend of mine who has just had this and her little one is I think like coming up to sort of 18 months old.

59:02Emma Dunwoody:And all of a sudden she's like, oh, she's such a handful. Like she knows what she wants and she cannot be swayed. I'm like, Well, she's a manifester. Like they have to be left with as much freedom as possible. So what are the boundaries? What are the rules that are the non-negotiables? Because we all have to have non-negotiables. And then where can she have the freedom to be a manifester? And, you know, like once manifestors get to eight, nine, they know what they want. They know how to get it and they just work it out. So it really is like understanding your kids can help you so differently. I wish I knew this when I was dating.

59:37Emma Dunwoody:Yeah. Oh, my God. Yeah. yeah I was married to a projector and I gotta be honest I'm like okay well there was a lot learnt there and all good things you know no you know not being negative no judgment but I'm like I would rather not be with a projector again what is the biggest misconception about human design do you think I think the biggest misconception number one that it's woo you know like yeah oh it's just woo woo it's like oh I don't really follow astrology it's just it's actually like the science of differentiation. It's, you know, I use the gene keys as well. And I don't, you know, the gene keys work really well with human design.

1:00:17Emma Dunwoody:And like, this is our DNA. This is, this is so, it's on point. So once you start working with it, there's nothing woo about it at all. And I think that the next step of that is it's not telling you who you are. This isn't a behavioral personality profiling tool. This isn't who you've learned to be. This is who you truly are. So when you start operating from that place, life becomes so much easier and you actually fulfill your purpose. You know, your soul's like, okay, finally, we're actually being the person that we came here to be. And I think the thing that bugs me is there's so many people out there.

1:00:58Emma Dunwoody:There's so many memes that are like a projector is this and a reflector is that they're not you're not so if you follow all of these like if you're this type then this is who you are no because it seems like there's so many levels to this exactly there's two over two billion expressions of the human design chart so it's so so unique and I mean we can look at I often use Taylor Swift Swift as an example because so many people talk about projectors as, oh, well, you know, they don't have much energy. They can only work a couple of hours a day. And so many projectors come to me and go, well, I feel like that's a bit of a letdown.

1:01:36Emma Dunwoody:Like I've got a big mission in me. And what do you mean I have no energy to do that? And I'm like, dude, Taylor Swift, don't worry about it. So you can be an energy projector. You can have motors. If you have a defined route center, then you have energy. It's just not consistent. So I think that one of the big misconceptions is that people go as far as type and they're like, oh, like, I don't like that. I feel like you're just trying to put me in a box. And I would say, like, just keep experimenting, go deeper, go further, because you are actually going to find it's the biggest permission slip you've ever found just to be the most authentic version of yourself.

1:02:11So for somebody who is dying to get started, how do you, you know, obviously we're going to buy your book as like a guide to have with us and to dig deeper and deeper. And then how do we get, is this like we can find our chart online?

1:02:27Emma Dunwoody:Yeah, absolutely. You can just go to my website, emmendonwoody.com. Just put all your details in. We're going to give you our free chart. It's like a 16 page, right? It's a big sort of summary because it's so complicated of your design. And if you want to pay 22 bucks, then you can get, I think it's 70 pages or something like that. Amazing. That dives super deep. And we also will send you emails that send you to the right podcast episodes. So you can learn each part of your chart by the podcast, with the book. I mean, we've got so many free resources. Yeah, you just set this up for everybody. Exactly.

1:03:03Emma Dunwoody:Amazing. It's what I needed when I was lost and didn't have any money, you know? So we've set it up so anyone can basically get their design, experiment with it, change their life. Amazing. Thank you so much for coming out. It was so nice to meet you. You're so welcome. I love being here in person. Thank you.
