In short

Kate Berlant discusses living with ADHD/ADD, how it affects focus and fatigue, and how she manages routines, caffeine, and social media habits. She also talks about stand-up craft (writing, memorizing, dread/adrenaline), acting/education experiences, and hospitality/expectations on luxury trips. They trade stories about being “influenced” by each other’s product choices and about celebrity/industry life (Sundance, TikTok, press).

Guests

Kate Berlant (comedian/actor; stand-up performer; studied at NYU/Gallatin; master’s at Eugene Lang/Gallatin; rejected from acting school; has done film/TV including a “Charlie” project; performs touring shows).

Key claims

  • Phone/social media addiction erodes focus; going off Instagram improved her ability to read and concentrate.
  • ADD can produce fatigue from brain overload; Adderall can increase irritability/rage.
  • Stand-up reduces anxiety during performance because she’s “out of her body” and can’t use her phone.
  • Luxury travel can feel disappointing when service/expectations aren’t perfect.

Notable examples

  • Post Ranch vs Ventana honeymoon: Post Ranch lacked service (no pool drinks; breakfast not included), leading to frustration.
  • She quit/avoided Instagram for stretches, then relapsed due to posting demands.
  • She describes caffeine timing (espresso after dinner ruins sleep; prefers afternoon matcha).
  • She recounts doing TikToks at Sundance with Kylie Jenner and getting a viral tweet/photo response.

0:14You know, I just got a desktop. I'm a different person. A what? A desktop computer. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. And the girl at the Apple store when I bought it for myself. She said, she said, this is really going to ground you. oh and it did well for sure I believe anything except for this I have a literal x slice wrinkle from and I was like it's good that it's because it really it's like this now yeah oh god I text my friends ago I'm doing ps podcast they're like no stop you are my number one influencer thank you for coming into my I feel like I'm cheesy and you're way too cool and artsy and intellectual to be on my podcast you are my number one influencer what product have you bought that you love the most which haven't i bought i feel like we've talked a lot about products well no because i said yeah i bought i purchased i'm like it's been a year i've been following you for years and so many times i got got bought it done i got pia got it okay so the things oh my god okay has there been anything that i've influenced you to buy that you were i know the answer is no i was going to cut you off no no no no so oh my god high on coffee it's happening okay the mega medicine and the coffee's hitting and jealous i wanted that fucking the line at community goods outside of the specific design center is a block and it's everyone is in workout clothes but like the mini shorts because it's so hot outside yeah and i was like i feel like a grandmother i can't i'm not doing it what's your because now i'm going no coffee i'm trying to do no coffee afternoon now because I really do think it interrupts my circadian, rather than whatnot.

1:50I know we're not supposed to. You're a health girl, you know. Yeah, but no, but need coffee for life. But I do think that I'm like, fuck, when I have caffeine. By the way, but I can have espresso after dinner and I'm like asleep, I'm dead. I don't know. Gabby will have like four espressos after dinner. I love an afternoon espresso. Need to have it. I try to do, I try to stick to afternoon matcha. Yeah. It runs right through my body. In a way that really is. I'm going to be laughing a lot throughout this. Like I'm really starstruck. And also it's so funny because I'm like, yeah. And you're the one that taught me that espresso has less caffeine than full drip.

2:23And that changed my life. And I go, we're getting a spread. And I'm doing more of it. And you're not so fucked up on it. Unless you get the espresso. The espresso is a Davide store. I had one one afternoon feeling cocky. I don't know why I didn't. I literally at two in the morning was like, there has to be a fucking pill in here. That'll make me go to sleep, like rummaging through drawers. Yeah, yeah. Fully. I believe it. No, this is cold brew. So I'm like, I'm like jaw grinding for pain. Like this is really intense. Yeah. Okay. So I think the first purchase I made, well, I don't know, but you also, there's so many domains of my life that you've influenced.

2:57So I'm like, first of all, by the way, so sorry for the bandaid. What happened? Private. No, I just truly, by the way, ADD moving too quickly. Like, like, like, gonk, like, just. I'm always doing that. I'm always having an injury. Managed to scrape my hand, like on my like mirror, just something really weird. And I was like. like dramatic extreme my partner runs in the uk i'm like i'm like i like lifted up my thumb go like just in like getting medicine out of a couple weeks ago i'm on the head yeah that's mean that's yeah line oh yeah okay so i oh my god i'm gonna say what products line oh yeah yeah that's that's well i love and i always forget the name what is the what is the organizer that you that the like product organizer i was parallel yeah it is parallel because i confused because you're a big parallel girl i know there's too many everybody needs to have like a meeting and talk about cross-pollination and i'm thinking about getting a large because i have a medium how sick is that makeup bag i know no it's it's fantastic just plops open yeah everything is available for you i'll do like four weeks with that thing and i'm cruising yeah i love minis don't you just love minis of products because i'm constantly traveling and so i i have this fantasy of having like doubles of everything that i love and i go i should just have a double kit of every makeup product that just goes you know who has that who's really chic is like steph ship oh yeah like she doesn't have to like pack her bag yeah she's already done grabs her i know that's like a level of like chic and rich that i one day want that yeah same yeah yeah four years in an afternoon like let me like re-up my travel yeah i need to react yeah because i'm constantly packing and i'm packing yeah i know oh and speaking of general population you're like the zip up I love that one.

4:39Yeah, it's the classic. Like, okay. I mean, where do I even start? If I had a 15, although I'm off, but I have to go back on just it's, you know, by the way, and you to me, like, you are the proof that like routines are real. Like habits are real. They're sustainable. I can't do shit ever. I can't do like I went to, for example, I went to a hot yoga class and I was like, five minutes from my house. I come out of session. I go, do you go to Moda now? Yeah. Yeah. But now they're like rebranded. it's something else i don't know but you there's great teachers i'm sure i'm sure and then so i came out of the class i was like a new person i was like hi and i and i signed up for a 30 day unlimited never went back once okay so that's kind of what we're i told you pvolve bought the whole set you're going too hard it's completely packed you can't you got it's just day to time i know it's like quitting smoking i'm not gonna smoke a cigarette today by the way i don't i have not quit smoking i quit cold turkey when i was 24 haven't touched it since you went you continued from 24 to 30 with no fucking cigarettes?

5:37This is this weird thing that I do. It's almost like a toy, like a little game with myself. I remember I go, I'm done. And I went, and if I really want a cigarette, I can have one. Something mentally about saying that. Yep. And then I just like didn't need it. And like not even so much as a spliff since. Someone posted a little video yesterday. It popped up on my like real speed, which I don't really look at that much on Instagram because I'm just TikTok fucking monster. And it was like an old hand. It was like a hand of like an Italian woman, like a close up of her hand. Yeah. With like fabulous rings on and like a little manicure.

6:12And she's smoking a stick. And it says, this is what I like. This is my vacation. Like when you ask me if I want to hike on vacation, like this is. Yes. And like, I remember we, Davin and I went to fucking Big Sur for like honeymoon. Ventana, where are we? Post Ranch. We went to Post and then left. Oh, wait, for Digents? it was we left for ventana we walked into a room which we you know we had like a honeymoon fund that like people like donated to okay every 15 minutes it was like such a big deal for us like spend this money it was like i think the whole thing was like 3500 or something before we were going for like two nights and we walked in and we were like this can't be this we can't like i start i got like upset i was like i've been wanting to come cobwebs everywhere we were like This is an hour long episode.

6:59I'm sorry. This is all I want to hear. I've been grappling with like talking about this publicly because I think people will think I'm a brat, but I actually think I'm not a brat. I actually think I grew up not having access to anything like this. So my expectations were really high. And I actually think that post-ranches where really rich people go to feel like they're like roughing it a little bit. The camping, that's so funny. So I'm like, this is actually like a rich people thing. And then, so Davide goes, we go, okay, like, now it's like four or 5 PM or something. like is there like a bar we can go and they were like oh the bar doesn't open for a couple hours and we were like what okay so we were like what should we do and the guy was like we have great hiking trails around here and david looks at me and he goes sir i am wearing laceless vans do i look like i ike yeah oh my god no we wanted to get drunk it's your honeymoon like i'm not hiking what are you talking about i'm not and so and then we went to the pool the pool is weird you You can't drink at the pool.

7:55It was like all these things. You can't drink at the pool. There's no like service. So you couldn't like get anything. And I was like, why am I paying this much money? I can't like get someone to like bring me a cocktail. So we said we're not doing it. We went to Ventana where we had like a giant room with our own little pool, like a jacuzzi on our deck. Whole different experience. This is incredible because I actually had disappointing Ventana. With an ex we went and so expensive. And I remember we get there and this was what got me. I go you're not including breakfast I go and this was a big breakfast yeah breakfast you should never have to pay for breakfast at a hotel absolutely and I have a huge announcement which is if a room is over a thousand a night and you're not going to give me pain like hey I have to pay for my own breakfast so that I I'm glitching out when we check in check in wasn't a breeze but it was like 10 years ago I remember forensic details of a check-in this is my 10 year ago almost of post ranch and our check-in at post ranch was awful I was like this is not my check-in experience.

8:55I've been waiting for this my whole life. This is not my check-in experience. This is not the check-in experience. No, no, no, no. Wait, did I go to, did I stay in Locarno in Rome because of you? Hotel Locarno? No, not me. I would love if that was - That was a check-in, honey. I go, they can check in. Italians. No, Italian hospitality. Of course. I remember checking, I go, hmm, you're gonna need a little bit more from you doll. And then what I remember is, TV wasn't working in the room and I go, listen, I didn't come here to watch TV, right? But - It should work. I don't want the fuck on TV to work.

9:23So then what? So then I call them and then someone's in there like with a screwdriver doing full. I mean, it's just there was something else I didn't like. I don't know. I was not impressed. This is going to sound kind of deep. But like, you know what? We're fucking adults and we work hard. And if we go on these trips and we've been waiting for this moment for a long time and we deserve it. It should be perfect. This is why I can't. I like really want to get into hospitality so I can give people good experience. You know what I'm seeing? Us opening a hotel together. Could you imagine? Where would it be?

9:51Well, because you're deep in Bowery. I'm deep in Bowery. Roblar. I mean, yeah. Yeah. I will say, though, I love, and this is also me being influenced by you, the Greek yogurt with the husk cherry with the berries. I love the one. That's really sweet. Yeah. I know. Yeah. Carlo was conceived at the Bowery. Oh, my God. That's amazing. Wouldn't it be cool if we didn't, if we only do family names? But I was like, his name being Bowery would be cool. What? Bowery Baranchini? That's really, yeah. Middle name. Yeah. he already looks like a guido yeah he's bowery baroncini he's a sausage dealer he lives in new jersey yeah but i can't believe he's conceived a bowery that's huge i know our friend germane's wedding weekend wow i know wow was not expecting us well we went off mic for some goss but yeah that's huge i know it's good for us it's good for us okay tell me about being a movie star it's so hard you guys i mean this is why i came to pia because i need it today no but like really i mean it's like how you just did like you went to sundance like how i was between four and five lines in the charlie movie yeah but you know what's cool about your four or five lines in the charlie movie is charlie's clearly like the rest of us just like loves you so hard that she was like you're in every press bit for this whole thing you know i was like i'll take it yeah i know lover it was so much fun i was like looking at the tiktoks and i was like what's it like filming a tiktok with fucking kylie jenner lol well here's the funniest part is that i don't have tiktok that's so funny for me i'm trying to go you'd get lost you'd get lost i know too much i literally did back on the sauce with instagram i had 60 days no instagram i literally was like i read two books i was like like god was like i'm like i feel it like i was i was like fully god entered but instagram was gone and i was like this is my new life now my diary every day this is it kate you're not going back and then i have sundance i go i need to post carousel because i have to post some stuff you can't yeah it's my bag it's your bag's on there it's like it's like i gotta be posting i'm selling tickets i can't you know i can't and then it's just full relapse i'm back in i'm back in you know how i'm gonna go first thing in the morning kind of go yeah yeah obviously i'm still asleep i'm like it's like entering me intravenous like i have it it's it's so bad like i work out really early and so i'll get like my alarm will go off like 5 15 and i'll snooze it for eight minutes i don't know why that eight minute thing happened it was just like clearly i don't and then and then after that i open it up and i have to do like check instagram make sure nobody's trying to cancel me okay well good and then i can start every day i'll be like late for a workout because i just made sure that like everything there's no like everything's in its place and you don't have anyone doing social media for you You're just raw.

12:35Lindsay's in there. Yeah. She does my paid stuff because I'll fuck something up. Yeah. Yeah. But everything else is a raw dog. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I'm trying. I'm going to have to do another cleanse because I just like I can't get work done if I'm doing You know what I have right now that actually is pretty cool is no one can message me. Oh, that's nice. You can go out of your way to DM me. You can't respond to my stories. And I'm like, didn't I respond recently? But we talk. Oh, yeah. You know what I mean? So it's like where that's good. Where before I was just constantly needing approval from strangers all day long to like, did they like my stories?

13:08Like, was that did I did I offend somebody by saying that, like, I should, you know, if I continue to post about dogs, even though my dog bit me, are people going to try to tell me I can't promote dogs anymore? I was off for the dog bite, by the way. Not not to make you go into it now. But literally someone my friend was like, is P.O. OK, I go, what the fuck are you talking? I go, don't don't with Pia. I go, I go, is Pia safe? Yes or no. they go she's fine i go she marked fucking safe and then i and i almost relapsed on instagram and i go no no i'm not i'm not going back you guys me i had no clue i was off what and this is there's got there's a there the takeaway from this is that this needs to be like a marketing tactic for something this like energy around this needs to be like used for something good or that i can make a lot of money off of or something yeah because me saying that an accident happened but that I'll tell you later and I need to like sit with it.

14:00Oh yeah. Was, I mean, strangers were like, we're all like some girl that I've never met who has like 1.4 million followers posted in her stories. Bravo, Andy, can you find out like what happened to Pia's note? Like I need to know what happened to Pia's note. Oh my God. And I was like, what the fuck? But I was so embarrassed to say this dog that I like posted that I rescued and I'm posting all these photos making out with on instagram sure fucking bit my face yeah because i was just like when it happened i didn't even look in the mirror for hours like i didn't even know how bad it was because they just put something on it and then they didn't look yeah i just kept going like the dog what are we gonna do what are we gonna do what do we do do we get rid of the dog i called the girl i adopted it from she like came over they tried to i didn't they tried to take him away from me yeah which means he'd be killed at the shelter and i was like he's not going back like I was like so much chaos and I didn't know how to like, I was scared of what people would judge me for.

14:59Of course. So I just needed a minute, but it really riled the crowd. Yeah. Yeah. We're proud of. You can do it again.

If I don't have my hour of therapy every Monday, I'm like, there's too much.

And somehow none of them actually last, which is why I'm so happy to be an adult who uses a product like Nutrafol that works because it's not about hype. I'm better. but I'm like I gotta do my but I'm right now I'm doing I'm literally only wearing like barrier cream right now right now I'm doing like CeraVe oh my god thank you you only have barrier cream on right now no no no I have makeup on right now oh I just mean no imagine yeah why oh sorry I have a little SPF on that's it it's not tinted no I I am like pulling back because you know how it is and you're the same way you get scent free products you know a little of this little of that so I was I'm just like doing Frankenstein too much and so now so I peeled away because my skin had a flare up and now something feels so sexy.

20:06I go, CeraVe. I have like drugstore only most basic stuff. You really get into the TikTok of it all? That's what the girls say is like the only thing you need. I'm sorry, but my mother, who's 81, looks unbelievable. Drugstore. She lives, do they still live in, are they in LA? Santa Monica. Born and raised. Did you grow up in Santa Monica? Yeah. Born and raised. Did you go to Santa Monica? I went to art school for girls. My parents aren't in the industry. Yeah. I always seem to say that, yeah. Your dad's an artist. Yeah. It's like industry-driven. Yeah, totally. But I'm not like, yeah. What year did you move to New York?

20:37God, if I had a million dollars, I couldn't tell you. Time, just. High school? 2005. So New York. Oh, my God. What year were you born? 87. 86. Cute. I thought you were like 10 years younger than me. Oh, my God. No, sweetie. Working. We're the same. It's working. Wait, we were in Nueva York at the exact same time. I went to Parsons in 2005. And I went to NYU. I went to Bard for a year, then I transferred. So I was there 2006, whatever. Yeah. did you go to lit on wednesdays oh my god so in and out harley dj yeah yeah oh my oh remember well this is my that's actually like root trauma high school trauma of me being like the cool girls you know i mean being like at a different school being like being like i'm ugly no one ever loved me you know because i grew up in pasadino like pasadino this was like a whole different i didn't have that was not i didn't know those like i knew them a little bit because i obviously would like hang out with loyola boys and the loyal boys would like i'd end up at parties on the west side yeah but you know i was the pasadena gal so i like i this was that was like a raw dog experience for me i didn't come with high school trauma yeah whereas i did so lit lounge i was like i was like i can't yeah i can't imagine you moving to new york and being like the popular girls took over the bar i know no too scared too scared where did you hang out where were your what were your bars i am at new york yeah where was i well i was doing like you know stand up every night always so i was just ever and like at that point right away that early every bar cool i started high school you were in your high school 17 years old laugh factory baby fake id to do open mics cool hard what did your parents say about that they well again this is like where it's rigged like artistic parents they were like fabulous you know amazing not rigged some parents would be like i don't know if i like want you in a bar it was very safe when we were in high school i had a fake idea i was going to bars and stuff.

22:24It wasn't totally my best friend was going with me. Yeah. Like, so yeah, we're just like, yeah, I mean, now it's like so cute to think about my God. I'm more so like, were you nervous? Like, that's like ballsy. That's like the confidence of being in high school. That's why I think like I've been doing standup since I was 17. And it's like at that age, you're so like, there's like an innocence where you're, you're like so malleable and porous that you can almost throw yourself into something like that. And it's I think about now I'm like, that was so crazy but it was just yeah i started doing it and just became like a muscle it's almost like a it's like a habit well because i've heard you guys joke about the fact that like before a stand-up routine you'll be like i got nothing oh yeah so you must really be able to like muster whatever you can up so quickly there's always like the dread and this i've been you know i'm thinking about this you know it can be applied to everything but it's like the dread is so like in enmeshed with the thing like you're just like you don't want to do it like i mean like i love doing stamps i mean i've been doing stamps i was a child yeah at this point it's like one of the most foundational it's like the core tenets of like my identity who i am truly but i'm also like no don't make me do it like no or like last night i was talking to someone they were like how is like like because i've been you know touring and doing stuff and they're like how is it going i'm like i don't know like don't ask me i don't know like well but like it's it's i don't know it's complicated but do you get such gratification from the audience deeply no no i i love but doesn't that give you wouldn't that like confidence carry you like i crushed that well by the way i'm like oh part of the reason why i do stand up is because on that for that like when you're on stage for an hour you can't be on your phone and you actually are like you know you're like out of your body in a way like it's it's like you can't be anxious when you're actually performing totally and i feel like you're probably like dread and then adrenaline and then and then you've and then you you're scared but then you like hit a thing and then people are laughing and then you end the show and everybody's like, yay!

24:14And then like the circle closes. Totally, totally. Or I was like, I was just in London last, or the other week doing shows and they were great. And my friend was like, can you like feel, like after the show, it was like, great show. It's like big crowds. And he's like, do you feel it? I was like, good question. I was like, I think so. Yeah, because it must be like, you second guess yourself. I mean, I can't imagine. A little lonely. A room for people. I go home alone. But there is kind of, I kind of like lean into it, like the drama of like back in my hotel room and I'm like, in the bath, like.

24:42Yeah. You know what I mean? because i'm like yeah i'm like i'm in the movie like i'm the alienated performer yeah and then like the crying clown yeah but no it's it's yeah i love doing it i'm not complaining yeah do you how do you have a whole set this is the number one thing i might question about how the fuck do you memorize i know this is a funny thing that it's i think because you write it it's in your head this new show or like this new hour that i've been doing i actually have my notebook because i'm also like it's very much like kind of constantly in process and it's like non sequiturs and just ideas that i write down so i kind of have but you just i don't know it's just i think because you write it you were going to school though it's in your head yeah i love school you went to a hard school you went to two hard schools yeah i mean i have like three hours too yeah yeah so many disabilities yeah well i was rejected from acting school i know i love that about you yeah yeah multiple everyone sweetie i think i was waitlisted emerson and it was no no no and the letters were mean that's what i remember because it's like you're doing an audition right like you're doing a monologue and i remember some of the letters were like we do not think that you are ready like it wasn't just like oh i didn't ask you i suppose i can remember marymount college fuck you okay if you're watching i just remember their letter was like a cutting i remember being 17 and it was like marymount there's one up in new york and there's one in new york it's like marymount it's like a i don't know maybe they dissolved sorry no there is a marymount in new york but isn't it was like kind of like in the bronx yeah uh i'm forgetting I can't remember.

26:10But yeah, it was like a fake school. It was like not a prestigious school. And they were like, the answer is no. And they were just, they were like dramatic actors. Yeah, they were like kind of mean about it. But also I don't blame them. I feel like I was doing weird. Well rejection is not the same. Yeah, of course. And it was, it was the best, oh my God. If I got an active school, imagine. Look at you now, by the way. Like it was the best thing for me. I would be insufferable. No, no, I had to go through academia and like do all that. Yeah, yeah. And I was like, I might do that the whole time.

26:36I was like, I'm gonna get a PhD. What did you study at NYU? you so I went to Gallatin oh you're one of those you're so smart and cool created my own major whatever and then I went to you know about Gallatin Olivia I went I because I individualized study like we were in like in adjacent schools and I started at Eugene Lang and then I went to Parsons Eugene Lang I love very similar and you would just like be you'd see this like tortured 20 something year old yeah like but I had like a really nice watch on yeah smoking cigs being like so many stigs it was just like this was like mary kate and ashley era like early 2000s and so it was really cool to like just be like but like then you talk to someone you'd be like where do you go like galatine yeah and it's like yeah they make you make up your own me it's like how many people are accepted like four people are accepted and you make up your own major it's a really big deal you create your individualized study and then but i was always doing like but i was doing stand-up at the time but so so stuff was kind of involved with comedy but i I mean, oh my God.

27:36How did you like weave that into school? I went for my master's not to be confused with an MFA. Yeah. And I wrote like, my thesis was like sublime hideousness, like liminality and transformation through comedy. Like very like, but, you know, but I think I've been thinking about this a lot lately because I had my focus then. Like my mind is so atrophied from the cell phone addiction. Like my focus is like, that's why it's like. Could you imagine going to college with a cell phone? I mean, cause I was there. I remember sitting, sure, I was high on Adderall, but I remember sitting in the library, being like levitating.

28:10And I would be able to sit there for 11 hours. I'd be able to sit and I could read for six hours, like a difficult text and actually metabolize it and write about it. And I feel like that's gone now. And so I have to get that back. But it's gone for - I don't have a book in my purse. It's gone for everybody. It's cool that you, what are you reading? I just picked up, I just finished the corrections, Jonathan Franzen. It's amazing. It's like a, early 2000. It's a big book. Yeah. Oh my God, you're so smart. Well, because I was off Instagram. so but i mean but it's i read like fiction ascent i read like fun like i like like paper palace like i need like but it's real but it was it's like anyway i finished that and i just got the most recent uh ferrante book oh you must be a ferrante girl yeah yeah what's it called the lying lives of adults i just got it oh cool yeah i thought that they were that she was gonna or hbo was gonna give us more of the show oh the brilliant friend yeah i don't know which i loved Yeah, yeah.

29:03Beautiful. My Brilliant Friend is one of the best television shows. I mean, the book. She's an amazing writer. Have you read the books? I haven't yet. You know, I own them and I have it. Owning is huge. I own a lot of books. I'm really giving in Tallahassee visually, but I like locked into the show so hard. It was a very accurate depiction for Davide of what his mother's childhood was like, which is like when you're 12, you're either like given to a man or you have to like go right to work. Like you don't send a woman to school. So Davide's mom was given to a man who was already married as like a side wife when she was like 14 or something.

29:39It's insane. I mean, I always think whether it's like in a hundred years, everything changes. It's so crazy. That was super, super normal. Like, yeah. I know I wish she was still alive for a multitude of reasons, but I would have like, I would have just sat her. I would have had like, I would have hired like my own documentary filmmaking team to just like have her spit out what her life was like. Yeah. Because it was really cool. So getting back to Ferrante. Yeah. Really fucking cool. Yeah. Yeah. I know. i took us off like reading yeah books whatever school you and i have too much add to have any sort of linear conversation well last night truly i was talking because i'm like i'm trying to write this thing and my my friend was like you need adderall i haven't taken adderall in years i do too but you know what it really makes me mean the the anger i just remember being on adderall the rage coursing through my body being a being a it would affect my marriage a hundred percent oh yeah i'm like i'm already because addy makes you irritable we don't snap at each other like it's taken a lot for us to get to this like smooth especially with kid you know like to have the kids trigger you all day long and for us to laugh through it and not have like a highly tense relationship if i just if i just get like a little sniffy sniff if it's in the room i'm like whoa i know i turned into the hulk well ad you know what i'm really focused on lately is the connection between ad and fatigue because that's you know that's a like a one of the big most profound symptoms of ADD is fatigue.

30:59I used to sit in class in high school like this. Yeah, exactly. It's ADD. Because me too, sometimes at the end of the day, I'm like, and I'm like, I'm getting the blood work done. I'm like, it's my adrenals. It's like, no, it's ADD. It creates fatigue. Because your brain is so overloaded. Like overloaded. Carmela has, I mean, besides her autism, her ADD is fucking off the charts. Yeah, no, it's, it's. She's like, I'm like, oh man, this is going to be so cool. It's a special time to like watch her. And I'm like, what point does she like need like a third? Her doctor tried to give her a drug when she was like three.

31:32And I was like, we can't start this at three. Yeah, yeah, totally. This is like a 18, you know, 16, 17, 18, like she can't function kind of thing. Cause they had me hopped up on so many pills. Me too. Well, that's the LA. That's our generation too, for sure. Oh my God, so many. And then you brought, obviously you brought Adderall with you to college. Like they continued in through. When did you stop taking Adderall? I think I just one day just was kind of like unceremoniously, like, I think this is making me like, I was like, I have to be a real person. I like left that in birth. I was like, I'm not a real person anymore.

32:00Yeah. And then had to go through that. Oh my God, birth control. Yeah. I remember ripping. This is very New York. I remember ripping out my NuvaRing, like drunk at like. Where was I? Was it? I used to live on St. Mark's. We were neighbors. I lived on 7th between C and D. Oh, we were crossing. I was on St. Mark's between 1st and A and on St. Mark's on the corner opposite Tompkins. How often did you eat at Mogador? Every five minutes. I was there. Americano. At the bar. Pulling the eggs. Every Sunday. We were there. Garrett, the hot French bartender. The hot French bartender. Oh my God, yes, of course.

32:31You know who's his wife? And still same. The girl that owns Frankie Shop. Well, of course. She had Pixie Market on the Lower East Side and now it's Frankie Shop. That's so cool. And I met her because I was a waitress at Mangami on Stanton. And it was like a little hole in the wall tying restaurant. And she was friends with the owner and would come in there and eat. And after dinner, she always wanted blue cheese on saltines because she's so fucking chic and french and i was her waitress and then i would either go to 205 or the box oh my god yeah well i had my show at cake shop like every single i know r.i.p yeah you also did pasadena playhouse which is an iconic institution that people really sleep on thank you for making it cool of course got it no that was really really fun isn't it beautiful beautiful beyond absolutely gorgeous i know beautiful theater we need to take over the fucking programming over there and make it flow again oh my god i know yeah would you dabble in adderall again oh very new york thing i'm about ripping out your nuva ring i yeah drunk at a bar fuck that's just making like i've got some of those little blue i have adderall from like deeply expired adderall but i'm like that's good i need it to lose a little you know when you're when you're like a recovering adderall girl yeah you it's in your house and you're like yeah i know i have the little blue pills i'm gonna microdose adderall next week i already have it planned because did you have to write something important yeah i just i just like it's just right i mean yeah what's your travel schedule right now i'm going to new york next week stand up no for fun for pleasure which is unheard of we're gonna heart palpitations literally imagine me live on pia you saving me this will be my dream is that i have so much caffeine in my system that something happens and then i wait kate kate and i'm worried i'm dead and i'm going to heaven and that you're an angel okay but i'm going to new york because my best friend john early his play is opening the two of you together oh wait also before i forget yeah what was that i only saw the clip of it i saw it randomly i don't know i have no context for it where you pretended like you had read the book oh yeah that's our peacock special would it kill you to laugh it yeah that clip yeah i sent to everyone in high school with me because that was me in high school thank you of course and then her being like me now yeah her being no you're way more intellectual i had raging addd but wasn't like i had i couldn't i was just like learn how be a bullshit artist yeah like everything was like last minute like i wasn't so that whole scene like you doing that and then i'm on top of the back but then i'm like under the back and i'm just like so small oh my god and i was like that was me having like really serious arguments about a book that i had never read but if we're being like it's okay if you didn't read the back oh no i still relate How did you start working with him?

35:08We met in New York. Okay, cool. We did not go to school together. Because again, I was rejected from acting school, whereas John, of course, was in acting school. And so we met at a friend who was doing like a short film. And we met and it was a very... He had messaged me. He had like seen something of mine. And then I watched a video of his and I was like, he's really funny. And then it's actually one of those things of like falling in love where one of my only memories... Like I remember the moment we met, which was that I was... Oh my God, what's it called? Like Jimmy's 23. Is it still there?

35:36or what was it? It was like Jimmy's something, some number. It's some East Village bar and I, it was a stand-up show and I like had to run to something and I did my set and I felt like a hand on my arm and I turned and it was John and I was like, I have to go, but like, yeah, I see you. I love you. And it's like, I really remember. And then a week later or something, we were on a shoot together and it was just like following him. And then we were like, truly like in Grand Central Station, like 2 a.m. and then going to our individual apartments, texting till 4 a.m. And I remember he was like, I'll kill myself if I don't see you soon.

36:06And then he proceeded to basically sleep in my bed with me for two years. Like we were inseparable for years. And I was like, why don't I have a boyfriend? It's like, John's literally sleeping in my bed every night. And so, yeah, it was very like a romantic, like friendship, just like, yeah. And you're gonna hang out with him. Yeah, so I'm gonna go see him. And yeah, stay at the Bowery. Ugh, go to assembly. Yeah. Go to ending soon. Where are you gonna eat? You know what's weird? oh i need i don't know i'm kind of keeping it open like i want to go to places i've never is don angie like do i have to like is it worth like i don't know breaking down the door okay i go to the same three places because i yeah i want i want to go where people know my name i want to go to yeah of course i want to feel the like i'm still relevant like you know my name like uh rafts yeah i mean i've known those girls forever i've only been a couple times i have to go back i didn't know we'd do breakfast you want breakfast that's what i was gonna say by the way like the vibe there on the morning by the way any day of the week yeah there's like the most fabulous people are in there like having like morning meetings yeah like their first meeting of the day but the fucking breakfast is exceptional even if you just go and get a cappuccino and like okay great i'm gonna do that we always go to balthazar obviously i just got the private number for all his restaurants because i went up to him at balthazar Oh, my God.

37:26Yeah, you have to. I went up to him. You got the bat line. And I sat down next to him. And I was like, this chapter in the book really pulled my mind. I was like, I know your son. And I used to eat at Lucky Strike. Yeah, I was like, I used to hang out with Harry all the time. And I remember like the sconces at Lucky Strike, your first Harry's mom made. Oh, wow. And I lived in LA. You did the good work. I said every perfect thing to let him know that I was like in it. And I appreciate it. And I'm a fan. And I love him. and he gave me the fucking I got the line. So now I can get. But we, Dominic and I would always have no problem like putting our name in at Mineta and like waiting for two hours.

38:04Like we're just like we'll just stay here and drink and tell. I remember going to Mineta right when I opened and it was like the big gag was that like a burger was$18 or something and now that's just I remember that was like the big thing. Well my, one of my other like best friend in New York he worked at Spotted Pig. He was bar back at Spotted Pig. So that, and that is still my favorite restaurant. Fucking deal. Yeah. And so I was there at the bar and then I would get free stuff. They'd be like, oh, we made an extra this or somebody. And I would just be at the bar getting wasted. And I remember then it'd be like dead winter going out and then like as a joke, diving into snow beds, like fully because I was like, isn't this funny?

38:37I was like numb from like three Manhattans. I know I just, I. Corner Bistro is so good too. Like over that sun. I would go to Beatrice, get really fucked up. Yeah. By myself, go to Corner Bistro, shovel a burger and then go back to it. Because I was like, I need sustenance. I'm going to die. I can't drink this much and not eat food. That's amazing. Yeah, the New York. Yeah, but I don't know where to go this time because I'm like, I love Le Vaudour. I've never been. Vaudour, I don't speak French. How do I get in there? I'll figure it out. You'll be able to get in, but it's gonna take some work.

39:06Yeah. But it's the most beautiful restaurant. But this time, I don't know, I might like leave it. I don't know, I'm like. I do still love Lucienne. And I used to go there before we were young. My dad really loved it when Lucienne would sit in there before his son took it over. Because then the son was doing Pink Pony, which was next to max yeah yeah those were the days yeah i'm kind of i don't know do you love new york so much yeah i mean you know live i lived there for like nine years the same yeah and i go a lot but do you miss it the same way that i miss it where you're just like i miss it like i really want to move here yes well that's kind of the fantasy is like of course yeah i know do you like la i love la you do i love la okay i love la i love my life why why wouldn't I no but but it's I feel I don't know I have the longing for New York and when I go it's always kind of that struggle like oh no like who would I be if I my art would be better

I'll send it to you. But somebody, it was like, because there's a photo of me with them.

44:11I mean, it's hysterical. And then some guy reposted it and was like, Kate, this person, Kate, friends say who? Totally fair. It's like, it's probably the ugliest woman I've ever seen. Which is so, I retweeted it instantly. No, no, it's like, it's amazing. I was like, well, this is exactly like. It was like a fucking oil painting. You're so beautiful. Oh my God. P &O, not here. and so that was like so funny but it was uh you know it was very fast and it was it was just it was quick and it was just i mean it's just very funny how was sundance what's the vibe at sundance like it's so short it's like you know you're you're like you like arrive and you do it and you i mean i was there for like two nights but really like one day oh really was that quick it's very fast in and out okay in and out yeah you're chic it's business okay i want to know what's in your bag okay what's funny is it's gonna seem like this is staged it was this is like a truly what's in my bag because this was me running out the door not wanting to be late because i'm not late so i had to grab the full one such a good because my hair was like a little weird today like i also remember done with this one i know like the whole hair breakdown because your hair always looks insane oh my god wait do you remember we were at the bear thing and yes i remember and my friend i was talking to my friend barb barb does hair well that was barb that was barb okay because because she's amazing and i've since seen her because she because allison roman's a friend of mine she's doing allison's and then i showed up i was like my hair is like and then barb fixed me that's amazing i know all the i know i was wearing yeah you looked well i came up to you that was the first time we had that was the first time we met in real yeah because i was like oh my god it's pia and i go up and i was like i was like i ride for you and then barb saw us talking and barb cuts my hair when she's like like not actually i she's so busy now because she like works with real actual people but every once in a while i'm like can i get like a little frimby haircut.

45:54And she saw us talking and ran up to me and was like, how do you know Kate? Like lost her mind. So anytime she's seen you since she's like, I'm with Kate, I'm with Kate. I'm with Kate. I got to fluff Kate's hair. That was gorgeous. And I was like, where's Davide? I was like, there he is. Oh my God. I'm in so deep. So I texted her on the way here and said, Kate's coming on the pod. And I said, do you have any questions for her? And then she was like, drop the hair routine. I need her. By the way, I'm literally seeing it. It's something that instantly is a Pia influence, which has taken over my household.

46:22will not be out of the house without it. Nothing without it. And the level of, and by the way, I was getting an IV the other day and the nurse was like, you need a hypochlorous. I'm like, honey, I'm hypochlorousin constantly. It's in my bag all the time. It's, yeah. My bag's a little wild right now. Is she hypochlorous? Wait, is this also you? The Ziploc bag? No, no, no. Adrian, no. I could not. You're Ziploc, right? No. I was like, did I tell you to carry around stuff? I'm a huge, which one is that? The taurine? I call this night pouch. It's the one that like calms you down. The taurine. Yeah, the taurine.

46:51It's good. Agent Nature is what we're looking at by the way. Yeah. I take that in the magnesium before I go to bed. I just bought the magnesium one. Cause I go, you know what? We're doing a treat today girls. And it was, it was like on sale at Erewhon. Cause it's like$49. I go, it's practically free. It's more like 70 with the discount. Is it? It's something crazy where it was like$20 off and I was like, fuck it, I'm buying it. So you're on that pouch every day. Anything from her? Yeah, you do. Every product that that girl makes, because she's like, she's like, by the way, you also have to trust people who sell products who look fucking unbelievably incredible.

47:22Like, she doesn't look real. She was, she doesn't look real. Like, she's so beautiful. And so I'm just like, I want whatever she's doing. Yeah. This is hysterical. My three rogue zinc. Okay, but. No, that's what, what is he gonna put it in? Yeah. What? What is we gonna do? Like, can't be doing zinc every day though. Why? It messes up with your copper absorption. Copper? That can't be right. Something. Zinc is not daily. Zinc is not daily. only if you're feeling something then we're doing 90 milligrams a day for three days better you're such a fucking health girl oh my god my oh by the way this seems like a plug these are my my microdose one milligram THC gummies that I make I've been seeing these and we like them I'll get it for you oh they're fabulous it's the only like weed that I ever consume one milligram it's barely there yeah I get I get two I get like like no no it's one milligram and I'm still like whoa sometimes did you influence me this?

49:46and then i have the say brown over and then i think i just went in with uh the violet i usually never have this much oh my god oh my god i want to see what's in there wait is that pat mcgrath i have that exact color no it's different which one the lip liner yeah No, this is Anastasia. Oh my God. You know, she did my brows. Anastasia herself. When we were that age, Anastasia or Damone Roberts. Remember Damone Roberts? Don't remember Damone. He was in Beverly Hills too. If you got an appointment with Anastasia when you were 17 years old, nobody understands that this was peak fucking eyebrow. Wait, this is crazy.

50:20I got the appointment through my friend. I think my friend Kimmy somehow she got in and Anastasia, her goddamn self, took him by the shoulders. She goes, stop tweezing. Because I was over tweezing. I was tweezing here. And I basically haven't touched my brows since. They're just wild. I just raw dog any Anastasia. And I walk in there and say, do you have an appointment open? And they did these last week. Jimena. Jimena Garcia. She's great. I've gone to her a couple times. Oh, yeah. Jimena. Fuck. That's the Chanel eyebrow girl. I need to call her. That's the Chanel eyebrow girl. That's a big one.

50:50Yeah. I want to know what's the one I'm saying. No, you were saying something. Mine are all the same tone. You have different nice colors. I have like you know kind of in the brown zone in the red zone but I am also I like the violet this like little stain that's been going on she's so cool yeah yeah yeah she's watching I would love the whole line I just like look at her Instagram all the time and I'm like she's so fun she's so cool and I love that all her ads are like girls being like pouting what's that little stay powder little finishing powder little notebook to write down my thoughts and my dreams my emergency pill case my migraine medicine gas medication ibuprofen wow that's cute and cool I mean this has been really this has been rolling out of my bag for probably i don't have anything like that i'm going to order something like that on right now okay yeah definitely got my nails are a wreck okay that's kind of like everything that's in here that's really good yeah we're wired headphone headphones with a single recola begging for its life if your wired headphones don't have something for your mouth attached to them like a little mint yeah or a recola then you're a fucking loser i re-bought this is kind of a classic just a hair oil i like the way it smells and just do that i'm too greasy for hair oil so i get jealous of girls i have like yeah oh need a little oil and then uh you know a hair clip yeah obviously duh you know that we're not supposed to be in the car with those things because they like can like embed in our skulls if we get to a car accident you're not on my god there's so much shit you don't know oh no that is a nightmare People going like, yeah, you go like this in your thing.

52:22And like, yes. Oh, Jesus. God, protect us all. There are things that I've learned from TikTok, like snow wars. So like this winter was so bad that when you dig out a spot anywhere on the East Coast, but especially like a Boston or New York, if you dig out a spot and you spend an hour digging out your parking spot and somebody takes your spot, people have been filming. The people get going to their spot and saying someone's taking their spot. So then they cover that car with so much snow that they can't get out. Oh, wow. And that's like a really big deal this winter. Yeah. And then the other big thing on TikTok that you don't know because you're not on it is that when you go to the Blue Lagoon, you can't dip your head in the water.

53:01And it says everywhere, do not put your fucking hair in the Blue Lagoon. But everybody wants their content floating like a mermaid in the Blue Lagoon. And then everybody then has to do their follow up. They have to cut their fucking hair off because there's so much like magnesium and salt in the water, which is why it makes your skin. Are we talking about Capri? No, no, no, the Blue Lagoon. I think you're talking about Italy. Where is the... Iceland. Oh, I thought we were talking about the... No, babe, we are... Nothing's going to hurt you in Italy. I know, wait, what? Nothing's going to hurt you.

53:26I'm drinking it, yeah. Oh, and they have to cut their... Wow. Okay, I did miss that as well. Yeah. Missed a lot. Yeah, no, it's okay. I can just feel... You know what? I'll just do like a little recap. Yeah, just do... We'll just meet up every week. Who's the hot guy who used to date Benny? Terry does those recaps. Yeah, yeah, yeah. like i think you'll do one just for me i'll do it just yeah yeah that's kind of the bag that's kind of what is the bag by the way this is a caslada and i love that this is my everyday this is again i go i go i have three kids i don't but like this is i go yeah i have kids with this i mean you can love it you can fit everything and i've been eyeballing that bag i've been eyeballing that back it's really good for just every day and beyond you're the best yeah what is coming up for you what is i feel like there's like a lot in the works that we don't know about stuff in the work stay tuned caperland.com no i mean yeah i mean yeah i'm touring i mean if you live in la i have a monthly show where i'm always working on new material largo historic you know you know largo yeah yeah yeah and uh me going there's stuff i can't really say yet no but uh i mean i'm just by the way i'm so sorry but the pro mix is like a guest it's like sitting on this it looks like yeah it's a third it's a third guest yeah but i by the way promix send a palette tomorrow because the marketing that i'm doing on the ground i've heard you talk about it many times yeah yeah and i'm hemorrhaging cash on the promix so i need you to send you should not be paying a single by the way if you don't send i'll go against the brand and then we'll see who's laughing okay but um i'll go against the brand i'll go again i'm going in so deep inside that yeah so send the palette now and that is a threat wait oh what was i gonna say what's coming up back oh yeah you know just yeah same same old just pounding the pavement you know clown being a clown material living just live you're just watching yeah just live i just i can't imagine how like unbelievable your brain must be all the time to like i think comedians i i did comedy sports in high school oh my god cute yeah yeah but i have so much of appreciation for for anybody who does comedy especially stand-up because the nuance that you have to capture in everyday life in your brain and clock to be like oh my god like that's actually like a whole funny thing oh my god little interaction is like so crazy well i'm flashing for him like you and davide you have to come to a taping that i'm gonna be doing and please come to a show whenever we love like davide is always down to go see like a stand-up comedian anytime we haven't we've been so not social for the last like year and it has something to do with our kids because they're sleep train they go to bed at seven i think living in pasadena like i get it it is so hard to leave your house even if something is right there i completely understand imagine from like getting from like from where you are then it's another 25 fucking minutes well everyone needs to know the commute pia is doing to the podcast everyone needs to know it's an hour yeah oh easy and so the we feel your sacrifice but thank you so much no you and david eight come to larko whenever you want any show anytime of course thank you like today for example i'm making a day out of it.

56:29I'm having a five o 'clock dinner. I have meetings after this. Like I'll just stack my day. Yeah, I've kind of stacked around also. But I don't like missing my kids going to bed. And I'm not even one of those moms who's like, I don't see them all day because I'm working. Like Carlo will like climb upstairs in the middle of a meeting and I'm like, this is cute. And then I'm like, this is super unprofessional. You have to go downstairs. He climbed up the stairs the other day in a very serious meeting with a tambourine in his hand. So every time he hit the stare it went amazing dunk dunk and ever and i was like oh my god sorry it's carlo and i and everyone in the meeting was had this look on their face like our kids aren't here oh jesus and i was like fuck oh my god sorry thank carlo one of my favorite is is the pacifier in the dog food that was huge for me he still does he eats really cute that's okay filled with essential amino acids vitamins i'm like what is that what's the disaster this is now yeah and i'll just and it's a fucking piece of dog food.

1:01:17I will say, I will take this moment to plug my podcast podcast. We have a lot of crossover comedy. But I thought you weren't calling it Pug anymore. Well, let's just say, stay tuned. I don't know when this airs. I don't know when this airs. So what makes the difference between like, okay, because then you renamed it, which is just your names. So what happened was, is that basically... What does POOG stand for? So it's goop backwards. Yeah. Very silly. You know that I've... You know when you hear a name and it's just like, it is that thing, but you don't go like deep in... Like, I don't know what Balenciaga, but you know what I mean?

1:01:48Yeah, yeah. Like, you're just like, first of all, you're just like, oh, POOG, POOG, POOG. Yeah. And it like kind of becomes a verb sometimes. and then and then literally today i was like i have to ask like i don't remember what it's it's goop it's just goop backwards so truly so in covid one of my best friends jacqueline novak brilliant stand-up you have to watch her special get on your knees her stand-up when she talked about her body and it what happens below my chin is not my business oh my god because she's so intellectual yeah yeah is so fun oh my god she's gonna love that you know it we started a podcast just like because we had we kind of discovered because we're going to the korean spa together that we just like had this other level of crossover of like wellness and obsession with that stuff.

1:02:28So then, and COVID hit. That makes sense because I knew that it was like a wellness podcast. Yeah, so I mean, it's like framed by wellness, stuff like that, but really we talk about anything that we want. I wish I had a bestie that I could pod with all the time. Well, we started it truly because I was like, as an excuse just to hang out and like talk every week. Yeah. But now we've been doing it for like five years. It's so cool. I mean, but then you renamed it. Sorry, so we were at iHeart. and then basically the contract yeah we've done a ton the contract was up and we had to create a new but there was like legal stuff around it we had to like rena it was a whole thing but and again i don't know when this airs but stay tuned because basically we're poog again you did some legal yeah yeah you've been working on legal working i mean you know you're a business owner and you got many times over i used to have ps pod yeah right right but we and i think people still do call this podcast ps pod but then i had to rename it because that was that that contract was exactly you get it it's a whole thing yeah cash app is no longer funding my podcast right remove that yeah yeah they don't get a plug not that anybody uses it but it's yeah podcasts i mean yeah where do you guys record all over all over we've been doing traveling a lot yeah we do a lot of remote but we're trying to do more in studio i love the i love the lighting when you do when you guys do in studio no you got in studio is so great it's just so hard to wrangle schedules and do it all horror yeah have you been on how long gone yeah yeah yeah i love that they it's just like nice hearing two friends like talk shit to each other yeah yeah i love i love those guys yeah they're great yeah okay so you have something exciting coming up with poog yeah stay that we can't talk about oh yeah it's huge that's so exciting stay tuned poog yeah but people are like so obsessed with your podcast so i get it thank god i mean god goddamn bless it really is isn't it funny in this world as all industries crumble and collapse.

1:04:16I know. I'm always like, Nobid was really upset that there was a podcast category at the Emmys. Oh my God. Yeah. He was like, this is sick. He was just like, yeah, he was. And I was like, I have a podcast. And that's like how we, I was like the lights being turned on is like something that's essential for us. And so, but he, he was like, where are we? Like, he's such like a traditionalist that he was like, where, like, this is crazy. And I was like, no, but it's, it's just what media, like media is always going to shift and change and you're a part of it or you're not loser so i know i know i know no no speedy he's my boss he's like so it's like the 1950s and he's 85 yeah yeah it's really like everybody thinks he's like putting on this whole thing i'm like no it could not be more it's real i can tell he like barely knows how to use a phone oh my god god bless that's what we need we i can't do any like shared calendar i can't do like any like he's like i'm not he'll be like this means we're not talking enough and i'm like yeah but i don't see you all day long like we're not talking enough yeah you know what i mean i know it's a it's it's a thing being married every day okay tell me more about i want to talk about what well because also because i'm like i'm like p.s christmas party i mean this is like for me like you had a christmas party too yeah well because listen you were raised entertaining entertaining parents so was i so the mantle passed down you know it's huge i had a menorah at my christmas party to show to make all my jewish friends i'm jewish i know that's why i'm telling you i'm a menorah too i was like i had one there just so all my jewish friends well no one loves christmas more than the jews i know yeah i really wanted all the jews to feel really safe and comfortable at my christmas party oh the christ well by the way i'm literally eagle rock bakery because of you what's your order well i'm doing i'm doing like i got actually too much this year because i realize people the cookies easy to eat but like the cake can only also easy to eat but like cakes at the party it's not going well i do it i do it so much leftover cake stuff but it's so gorgeous just you know what's so nice when you buy it in the display and it looks like you've done so much and it's like a whole thing and also you're there with the ticket in the morning with seven i know isn't it nice no it's so good so the other one is roma in pasadena which is like i haven't been oh he keeps christmas decorations up year round and there's one sandwich and he you can't modify it it's made there it's at the counter you buy the sandwich right at town what else is in there not to get too personal oh flash diary entry so cute look at your handwriting oh my god it's like it's truly illegible no it's beautiful there's a heart in a corner what's the heart mean i think just i just draw i draw i knew we were connected in a past life all i do is i draw hearts a lot i draw hearts that's good i'm gonna say i need yourself yeah yeah um because when i am on a call or doing anything i'm drawing hearts and my best friend hillary does it too and i'll be like are you drawing hearts right now she's like yes obviously i'm drawing hearts oh my god cute this is so funny because what i have in here also is yeah diary entry and then also it's like oh like also trailhead oh hi lower lot park there for the oh hi plunge like a place to go do like a naked plan you know but that's what a real notebook is is it is it's a real gorgeous pen i'm going roma pasadena pia a real notebook has directions maybe some math you had to do and then a journal it's a represent it's your brain and paper makes that notebook i usually have a moleskin this i I just got in New York at a...

1:07:49Made in Italy. Oh, you rich bitch. Straight to the source. I got this at some... I think I got this in New York. What does it say inside in the thing? Pia and Kate forever. Okay. What? So that's where, because in Spanish, cuaderno is no book with a C. Yeah. And I guess in Italian. They're very... Yeah, the languages are very similar. Yeah, yeah. Not that I know any fucking Italian. My mother's Spanish, so. Is she from España? De España, sí. Todo su familia. Do you speak fluent? Solamente un poco. Same. And now I'm doing Italian. Italian accent, but I'm back in Spanish lessons now. Are you? That used to be really good.

1:08:18And like my mom's first language is Spanish. But I mean, I spoke as a kid. I know. It's gone. It's gone. All things must pass. We release without judgment of the self. We release. My biggest issue with my husband is that I don't speak Italian. And because I feel so, I have so much insecurity about feeling dumb in school. And I always have to talk about this with my life coach. That... Oh, maybe I need one of those. It's really helpful. Okay. Do you go to therapy? Oh, yeah. Since I was five. Yeah. same i mean los angeles yeah duh oh my god i was like the learning coach and the huh my therapist died when i was in college larry by the way i think i think because i had one like sent me off to school and then yeah i think he's gone too yeah la therapy is a real coming back yeah but love love i don't know my god i need you to close that circle my new yeah okay what's tall in actually what is like the funniest wellness moment that you and jacqueline have gone into oh god i mean there's so many i mean jacqueline also jacqueline's like hyper add like we're so we're always like mourning like the lost time and like oh my god like where did it go and like yesterday we had this meeting doing this like poog stuff where we had to sit this woman like basically like uh rented a room at hotel covel and sliver lake for us to sit and it was like it was six hours it was like 10 to 4 and i was like really i was like 10 to 4 i'm like is this real or just like research research for pook it's like no it was real it was like a pook business meeting basically and it was like six hours we were sat there and then it was like i can sit in one place for six hours like i was like kind of because we were both kind of hyper focused locked in jacqueline and i sometimes will call each other on speaker and just basically be silent on the phone there's a name for this it's like parallel it's not parallel play but it's something like that it's like mirroring where and i'll be on with jacqueline and suddenly i'm like able to like like we're both able to get more done just having someone there silently like as a witness it's like very anyway but funniest wellness thing i'm like i'm trying to think i'm like i should have that tip of my tongue it's just all no there's so much it's the daily commitment to the belief that something will fix you know it's like but that's part of the pleasure and that's like what the podcast is about it's like the pleasures and the pursuit and like the seeking like the you know we never want to actually find we never want to actually arrive it's like what's the to be fully optimized like it's like it's not coming sweetie it's like that's never happening you know yeah what are the i i listened to something that you to one of the podcasts you are where you talked about that the fucking huberman trick of just like swishing water and swallowing it was like your biggest immunity yeah no because i watched by the way i like there was like a week where i listened to like three huberman podcasts and then like it was like you're in the top of one percent of his listener response how that's not good i'm like that's not possible by the way but he was like yeah just swoosh water in your mouth in the morning and i've been doing it i don't know what else do you do for immunity your wellness for my wellness well again i am trying to go off instagram i think that's essential for all honestly that's like the biggest fucking flex that's the biggest wellness flex that you do 60 days of a fucking instagram it takes a week i'm not kidding i mean i feel it two days off i think i think one day off you feel it but for a full week off i'm not kidding i'm driving a week off instagram memories coming to me like early childhood memories remember noticing things seeing being at a cafe looking outside seeing faces walk by i mean brought to the edge of tears the the gorgeousness of humanity faces walk by i'm going to tell you something really funny that happened to me yesterday which will just back up everything you just were saying is that i was on a call with one of my best friends and i was like i gotta log off i have this like meta meeting with dear media to help like teach me and some of us how to like amplify our fucking podcast on the platform right and i'm really bad at this stuff but it's like this is my job so i had to like lock in so i was like okay i gotta go i was like i gotta like do and as i'm in this meeting my girlfriend and literally it's the top people at meta being like you need to post 10 reels a month they need to be they can't be longer than 30 seconds like Like da-da-da-da-da.

1:12:23And then she sends me, she knows I'm going into this call. So then she texts me a fucking tweet, whatever this is now. What do we call it now? X. That says, from some doctor that says, I hate whatever the R words in here. We should get our adversaries addicted to reels because all of this, and he linked all these, an EEG study says that mobile phone short video use is negatively impacting attention functions so bad that you can see them on an EEG, the negative effects of our brain function. And I believe it. So, babe, you taking 60 days off of fucking Instagram makes you a monk at this point. I have to go back up.

1:13:03No, no, it's true. It's devastating. I mean, it's... And no one wants to really talk because we all know it's like this ambient horror of like, ha ha ha, like we've all given our lives over. But it's like, it's actually... It's like, it's the fight of our lives. I mean, truly, it's like, we got a brick, we got a brick up. I have a light phone. Yeah. which is a balance it's a balance no it is a balance because of course i'm going to be on i have to you know but it's it's it's really serious what are your other daily wellness rituals are we red lighting yeah you know but i so fall off like yes i was like doing the red light but like i had to stay next to your bed it has to stay next to your bed i know but which mask which one do you like higher dose yeah okay it's flimsy and i also put it on my stomach to help with my microbiome i just saw that i just saw that you posted i go pia's doing it on the stomach i saw it on uh Carmela's functional medicine doctor told me.

1:13:52How? Because it helps with kids with autism. Wow, that's amazing. Yeah, red light heals. Because they have so much, like, you know, gut brain connection, babe. Yeah, fuck. Okay, okay, I need that one. Higher dose, please reach out. Would love a free one. Or you could just buy the mat. I've got, I've got, I have like the PEMF. That's my own. I have the PEMF with you. Yeah, yeah. But if you just get the red light mat, which by the way, like, like rolls up into nothingness, then you're getting your whole body. You don't need all the things. Okay, okay, I want that. yeah i'm sorry but it's like simple it's like it's like walking like i just really need to walk like and i do you know doing the loops just doing doing the reservoir yeah every cool person does i'm there i mean what can i say i mean like my i'm like hideous i'm always like they can't see me like no one can see me everyone is actually drawing attention because i'm wearing a everyone's there and they're looking at you everyone's you walk by and they're oh my god no no no i'm like I'm locked in.

1:14:46My phone died on the reservoir the other day. Direct communion with God. Literally, I was like forced to just like listen to birds because my phone was dead and I couldn't listen to anything. You know what I've been doing in the car lately? Raw. Oh, yeah. Raw car is good. Along with my thoughts? My worst nightmare? Oh, yeah. Well, no, because I'm always, I'm like, exit, exit, anything to exit. Anything can not be with yourself. I'm like, phone call, call my mom. Hi, Marco Polo. Like, I'm, oh, do I get in the car? And if I call my three people and they don't answer, I'm like, No, you're screwed.

1:15:14Yeah, yeah. Oh, no. Returning to Raw. That's what being off is. So then I was like, maybe I'm just going to, because you know what the internet ruined for me? Music. Why should I have so much access to it all the time? I know. Now I'm like, it's not special because I used to like, you know, illegally download music off of Napster and then burn my CDs and those 12 songs for my whole life. You have to return to it. I have like a little like weekender car, like a little Mazda Miata and it only plays green with a tan interior. and you know it's CDs only radio and I love that because then it's like you really just do commit to the CD or you're listening to the radio and it's like it's really feels so romantic and exotic to do that but it's it's it's really good do you ever go to Sam's place yeah I've only been a couple times best restaurant I like okay I just think it's yeah I mean I went there with John we had like steak it was delicious they only have it's like steak and like pet nat yeah I'm obsessed they play music on tape cute yeah well the sounds different i know i was like also this fucking dude's all like that earthy yeah oh oh i was taped i went to bard yeah yeah you think i wasn't yeah yeah where else we went to herman's the other day actually had shocking martini at herman's best martini i've ever had in la you should go do you like the food yeah like yeah gotta go back but the martini i was like what is this kyoto i literally i go it's kyoto level I almost got up and went over to the bar to say something what was the order it was just it was just their dirty martini but it was very I go oh my god the balance yeah because dirty martini not done right I'm not a big dirty martini person even I'm like twist whatever this was like I was like this is weird I'm craving a dirty martini I saw one go by by the way I'm actually going to sit in silence with it how cold it was it was a level of cold flakes ice flakes it wasn't bruised no no it was cold that's what was so weird it didn't have which is delicious i love that but it was cool i go what's the technology how is this how is it so cold and you know sometimes like you know you go to houston today bringing you a cold glass to re-up all that's heaven you know i wait for that all week long this was so cold that i go something's going on here weird want me to tell me you know what I mean to say what they told me yes and so this is almost this she and the server almost said this like it was a dirty secret she goes I go I'm sorry I have to stop you this martini is exceptional and it's cold in a way that I've never experienced I'm not a big and I was like she goes they're pre-batched pre-batched martinis they're in the cold thing I know so and you go am I being cheated is this no it's fucking genius instead of no it's genius mixing it right there with the proportions perfect oh my god okay no and i and i was like so that's what i'm talking about duh and i'm annoyed at how duh that is pre-batch and i go oh it's sitting in a freezer it's in the freezer so it's absolutely freezing cold and they're putting it in a chilled martini glass and they're not like watering it down with ice yeah or the chunkies no because now i hate the chunks now you told me you're off it yeah no no i but just go for the martini and I want you to experience it.

1:18:29You don't hear the shake. I think you really love it. Oh, yeah. Also, I went in the bartender was so gross. I go, damn. I was like, what's going on? And then he was like, he wasn't shaking, but in my mind. You're missing that. It's fine. Yeah, you don't need it. I like it when you go to Lucky's and they mix it on the... Right, right. Yeah. No, of course. And we love that. We love the mousse with the sidecar. No, no, no. But what's happening is happening. But I really was like, this is new technology. What are your other favorite? Give us like three of your favorite LA moments. Where am I right now?

1:18:57well i met jar you know i go i went to jar last night i'm really happy that people are looping back around to jar yeah well because listen my mom went to 35 years and what are we talking about you know and it's like this is a they are consistent jar is gorgeous yeah just really you know get a great steak actually last time i had the halibut yeah really good uh okay so you know where i have been into loretto and frog town raw seafood this unbelievable really special so I'm not a big Agua Chile person. I'm a huge Agua Chile person. You have to promise me you're going to go immediately and get the Verde and the Negro.

1:19:32Okay. Ooh, Negro. Like. What's it? What makes it Negro? Like it's like some kind of like mole, like something, but cold. I don't know what's going on, but no, no, no, no. There's like, showstopper. You know, I get nervous to go to new places because I'm like, do I have to wait? I'm a creature of habit. I'm a creature of habit. I'd rather, I'd rather watch the same movie. Yeah. Like a hundred times. Time, time, time, time. I think it's a 80 thing too. Loretto. And get the Agua Chile. It's really beautiful. Okay. Really special. And amazing cocktails. Okay. And like, yeah, go. That's really, yeah, yeah.

1:20:02I had the Hermans. I'll give you another good Agua Chile. Have you heard of the chain Javier's? No. It's like the Houston's Mexican food. Oh my God, no. It's a fancy Mexican restaurant. And they just opened in Pasadena. But there's one in like the Century City Mall. There's one in Vegas. There's one in Newport Beach. If that tells you anything about the level. Yeah. And the food is. It's telling me that consistency. They're locked in. Unbelievable. It's Santa Monica seafood. Like we got a tour of the kitchen because we go so much. And the Agua Chile there is also fire. Oh my God. Okay. Great. Great.

1:20:34But I'm going to hit a Loretto. Yeah. I want to support a small business. And of course I'm like, you know, I'm sorry. I'm going to Safi's folks. I know. It's so good. Talk about their scallop crudo. I do want more from them because I want it to be more Mogador-y. but I just need to love Safi's for what it is. Exactly. And that you have to get the mermaid, as I call it. It's just like, it's like what a mermaid would eat on her birthday. Yeah. It's like the scallop. It's really, really, really goddamn good. And the steak. Yeah. It's just, it's just really good. I eat a lot of, uh, fucking what's it called?

1:21:08Oh my God. The, the bad, like it's not bad. Nothing's bad. Nothing is bad. Nothing is bad. Yeah. Uh, the chicken place. It's like, they have also have kebabs, but it's like it's a chain are you a california chicken cafe well that obviously I get this either wrap yeah cause that's no I've seen you do that and I still haven't had it yet hold on hold on I just postmated it for lunch by the way mini kebab in Glendale is fire but he likes to close like three days a week and it's just like bums me out hold on where's my last order I always do like a you know hosting with like like a last minute hosting thing with the mini kebab the catering trays that would be fun I keep forgetting you can do that where the fuck is my order history on here and then I need to let you to live your life because hold on what the fuck where's my order meter filled for another half an hour we're good wait where the fuck is my order history on postmates orders i'm i gotta close the circle my voice oh of course with the garlic sauce okay but listen the one on normandy so they expanded their menu and i get a all white meat chicken kebab on rice and I do double cucumber salad on the side.

1:22:20And they have - I have to record this. It's a podcast. Yeah. Yeah. And they have a harissa and they do like harissa tahini and the garlic sauce. Mm. And I, my mouth's going. I want that. Mm-hmm. Ooh. Uh-oh. It's lunchtime. I'm hungry. It literally is lunchtime. Around here. I know. I have like a six o 'clock Crossroads dinner. Because Jacqueline's vegan. I have five o 'clock at - She's vegan. I forgot about that. Yeah. but i can we were in paris and she ate pig's foot with me i was like come on where'd you eat pig's foot uh well that's a huge departure from a lip no it's one of the most unbelievable thing we were there she was being vegan i go sweetie we're in paris you're gonna have to come on come on and then she like took him on went outside cried came back inside it was it was one of the most i was like this is why you are unbelievable she's very sweet with the waiter trying to wrestle on broken french uh vegan whatever he's like fucking pissed like i get it it's just like he's like he's like are you she goes out she has a crush she comes back she goes never mind what's your favorite kind of and he's kind of like and he and he goes well the big pig's feet challenging she goes then that's what i'll have he walks away i go jacqueline jacqueline get a steak get some you know you don't have to every bite's consumed with a smile she just eats it she goes yeah and meanwhile i'm eating steak i go i don't want that that's how hardcore no can you can you believe that and i go wow you You are special.

1:23:38So special that I can be someone you share a lot of time with. Yeah, yeah. And she wasn't making a big deal of it. I go, she ate the whole thing. And the waiter kind of came over like. Did you have a bite of it? Was it good? It's a pussy. I didn't want a bite. She makes me bite. She goes, it's good. I go, it's gelatinous. I go, I just can't do that. This is literally one of the craziest stories I've ever heard. I know. From vegan to pig's foot in 40 minutes. Because the most annoying thing about vegans are that they're whining. That's all they talk about. She'll bend because she was eating meat for years.

1:24:04She was paleo for years. She was like hardcore keto for years. so she'll like for a special thing she'll kind of break but also she comes over for dinner i make you know i make i make exceptions for her and her boyfriend of course and keep it vegan but that's that's that's that's a strong willed awesome and that's how you have to live i'm in paris like it's fine 100 that's how you go about cigarettes in europe oh that's completely fine doesn't count it's fine listen my mom my mom 81 she has a cigarette every now and then you got to live your mom does yeah and she's hot and cool yeah my dad chain smoked with like the windows was closed when i was little so my god yeah yeah so it's in here you actually have to i was like a dentist and a football player who yeah yeah yeah horrible okay i love you and i love you we're locked in so much yeah we can take we're we're on text oh my god i'm in i'm in i believe you should listen to me for a drink please no because because also i go there's stuff that maybe i won't say on cam but off i'll tell you i'll tell you everything there's nothing off limits i want to go deep i'll go deep and hard off game by the way i share i'm such an overshare on the internet imagine me in real life when i'm drunk oh well because i go i have to pull back because i go pia i'll say anything to pia i go pia will be like what's this and i'll be like and then i'll be leaving having a panic attack my worst fear in life is to try my worst fear in life is somebody coming here and me making you feel like i'm pulling something out of you and you leave here we can have let we can keep i want to be light and cute i want everyone to feel really good leaving here and I don't want anyone to have any anxiety about like, I said this on a podcast, then we're not doing it.

1:25:35Oh, cause I'll say, cause I'll be like, it was just hard because like, it's like cut to. I'm not going to the podcast. And this is why I am not skyrocketing to the top of the listeners list is because I'm not going to use other people's drama and sadness and, and sound bites that are controversial to get likes and clicks that are negative and can be, No, I'm just keeping it alive. No, and then we're going to get martinis. And then we'll get martinis. And then we're going to go. I'll spill my left to you. I'll tell you dark, dirty things. Oh, I can't wait. Okay. Thank you for having me. This is huge for me.

1:26:09This is like really huge. And I actually, and I'm going to need a picture. Again, it's committed forever to the internet, but I actually, yeah. Whichever will, we're definitely taking a picture. Okay. I love you. See you on live. I love you.

This week I’m joined by the endlessly funny Kate Berlant, and we get into everything- from being “influenced” into buying literally everything, to caffeine addictions, routines we can’t stick to, and the chaos of being chronically online. We talk about internet fame, impulse spending, and the very real struggle of trying to stay grounded while your brain is moving at 100 mph. Hope you enjoy!
