0:00The following podcast is a dear media production.

0:15Okay, guys, this is going to be a really short, quickie episode, which I'm excited doing more. And I always say I'm going to do this and I never do, but I just want to do like little quickie, nice episodes that are easy to digest where I'm not crying and having an existential crisis. So we're obviously traveling and we will do a pod together. It'll probably come out next week about, you know, our trip and what's happened. But I want to talk to you about how I packed because I'm really proud of it. And I did a sub stack on it. So everything is linked in there. But I want to tell you, especially with the kids, and I've talked about this at length before.

0:59But the more that you can de-stress and feel in control and be streamlined, the more you're going to feel confident, the more grounded you're going to be, the better energy and tone you are releasing to your family unit or just anybody in your little zone. Anyway, so I started doing this a few years ago, but I buy these reusable Ziploc. They're not Ziplocs, but they're like these reusable zipper bags. And I get them on Amazon. Again, check my travel sub stack about this because it's really helpful. I've had these bags for years. I use them to organize toys. Actually, it's so funny when we go to like different therapy centers and I see people using those bags.

1:44I always like will say to the therapist, like real people know what is up because they're plastic bags, but you can see that there's like something woven inside of them so they don't break and they last a really long time. And then each zipper, you can get them all black, but I like the ones that are different sizes when the zippers are different colors. I don't know, whatever. So I get a bunch of those. I always have a shit ton of those in the house and I have a label maker. My carry on situation, which is going to get very fucking challenging as my children grow and multiply possibly. But right now I put all of their carry-on stuff.

2:22I share a carry-on for them. And it's like the larger size. Basically, it's like the largest carry-on you could take. We have Ramoas. We bought Ramoas a long time ago. There was like a crazy sale during COVID and we got them all. So it's the larger size Ramoas. One side is Carlos, one side is Carmela's. We got Carmela or I got Carmela. these really cute travel cubes when she was born because we went to Sicily when she was three months old. And they're from, I think it's called like Dondolo, Dondolo, which is a really over-the-top, chic, cute kid store somewhere in Texas. If you want your kid to look like a doll, like all these stores in the South are like where you want to be looking because they have the most like fabulous shit, especially for the holidays.

3:07Like these brands like Easter dresses are insane. It's like, you know, Peter Pan collars and ruffles and ducks everywhere. It's so cute. So I got her these beautiful packing cubes and this like really beautiful floral fabric. And I just used three of them. And so, you know, I have dresses and two pieces in one container. And then I have tops and bottoms in another. And then the littlest one is for her bathing suits. And Carlo also has three organized in the same way. and those are blue packing cubes that I get on Amazon, and I linked them because it's this brand of packing cubes. I don't know their name right now, but they're so fucking good, and they have two zippers, one to zip up the bag, but another one to expand or contract it.

3:56You can get a lot of shit in your suitcase with these fucking packing cubes. And then my trick always is to stuff the shit out of the suitcases with as many diapers as possible because I just love the coterie diapers. I have no problem using diapers in other countries. I'm not. It's like, it's, I remember like when we first traveled and a lot of people around my age had kids like around the same time. And all the husbands were like, there are diapers in other countries, like you losers. And we were like, there's just something about coterie. It's like, and the wipes, especially because every time I I bought wipes, especially in other countries.

4:37They seem to all have a shit ton of like, like perfumey scents that make my eyes water and my nose sting. And like, if I'm wiping my children, it just moves the shit around. It's not like wiping anything up. By the way, Carmela is unable to be potty trained. It is our goal for the next year. But I'm changing two diapers all day long, you know, of a five-year-old and a two-year-old who eat a lot of food. So I feel like I have some authority in this category. Coterie, coterie wipes, get the travel size wipes because you don't want to bring a brick of wipes with you everywhere, weighs down your bags.

5:17So stuff those all in your bag. And then my trick for the last five years, I don't know, nobody even told me this. I don't know why I thought to do it. But the Mustela micellar water, I have the big ones in pumps and they're in each changing station in each room. And then I bring the little travel size. If you put one squirt of micellar water on a coterie wipe, you can wipe up like an adult size. Like I don't want to be graphic, but like you are able to do a code red cleanup so unbelievably quick and with so much like swiftness and accuracy. This is like a major hack of mine. So I load up that carry-on.

5:59Also in this carry-on is another bag that is going to the beach with us because we land at 8 a.m. or landed at 8 a.m. And that's usually we always like whenever we travel, we land in the morning. So I always have a bag that has swim diapers, two swim diapers, two bathing suits, a really easy little throw-on outfit. They're each wearing jellies with socks on the plane. I will take the socks off. So when we get to our first destination, always we are, and I do the same thing in my carry-on, like Gavity has a little carry-on and I put like a dress and a bathing suit in his. And so did, and he, you know, obviously put his in there too.

6:40So whenever we get to the hotel, we are able to disrobe in a bathroom, hand off our luggage and change into our beach or pool attire seamlessly and like get to enjoying ourselves. And it's a really good feeling to just get out of those fucking plane clothes when you've been traveling for that long. I like to buy them new toys when we go on these trips. There's a lot of things that they love. And I linked a lot of the toys that they're always really happy with. Carmela always loves a book. Obviously, I bring an iPad. I just got a really great new iPad case and I download their favorite stuff. We are only allowed to use the iPad on these trips, only on planes.

7:17I get these sticker books and I get these little like magnets that Carlo loves. There are little trains with numbers on them. Like any, I bring a few little bags that have a few of the little things that he just like loves to carry around right now that aren't super precious, that are replaceable. And then there's like new sticker books and some new drawing things, like some other things that he's excited about. And then I have all, by the way, the whole bag, which you can see it on my post, the whole bag is full of these like labeled bags. Then I have medicine and another one. I always have Benadryl and Dive-Free Motrin.

7:52And I always have melatonin because I give my children melatonin. I feel really good about that. I have lots of doctors and lots of specialists. Everyone has said it's fine. It allows for us to have a very relaxing trip where my kids sleep really well and we wake up, you know, rested and all ready to go. It really like sets the tone of the trip. There's liquid melatonin that I love. And then there's gummies. You know, there's lots of kids brands just by whatever. I also have emergency pacifier. I need to wean Carlo off of his pacifier. He just uses it to sleep. And I will do that soon because he's two and shouldn't have a pacifier anymore technically.

8:26But I'm not going to do it before a goddamn trip. Definitely not. I also have an extra set of clothes. In this particular instance, when we go to Sicily, our second flight is the overnight flight. So I will put them in pajamas. Obviously, if there's an emergency on the first flight and we need to change them, I will use that pajamas. and if they're still fine for the second flight, great. If not, because I have their carry-on, I have access to all their other stuff. So my main carry-on bag that I'm carrying, my big LL Bean bag, which makes sure you get the long strap when you get your boat tote and the zipper top, it's not full of tons of extra outfits, which would be weighing down the bag because the bag has a shit ton of stuff in it anyway, right?

9:09So I have access to their bag.

9:19One of the most successful tips I got from friends of mine who had kids before me was to just sneak in a quick workout whenever you can. I remember FaceTiming with one of my best friends, Hillary, and she had literally 20 minutes before her son woke up and she was done working. We were on a FaceTime and she was doing a workout on her iPad and she was using Obey fitness. And it was like, what is happening? And she was like, no, this is how you do it all. You just use the 20 minutes. And she was going on and on and on about how addicted she was to obey. And I get it because they have everything in one place.

9:59And I've been using it almost every single day on this trip because there's strength Pilates and cardio. So I, you know, whenever I cycle sync. So at the beginning of this trip, I was doing a lot of Pilates. And then once my cycle went to a different zone, I started doing the cardio and the strength. I just do it in the morning when we're in the hotel or the Airbnb with the kids and they think it's so cute. Carla will like do it next to me. There's workouts that are 10 minutes. There are workouts that are 30 minutes and it's perfect when you're juggling 1 million things. And my favorite part about it is that the instructors are great.

10:34It's not an annoying instructor. It's instructors that I love and it does not feel boring or repetitive, which is usually where I always kind of fall off. I'm just like, I need to get over this, but this always feels like really fun and exciting. And like, it's something I look forward to. So if you're trying to get back into a routine or you want something that feels super doable, this is an awesome option. You can try Obey Fitness for 30 days at ObeyFitness.com with code BEST. 11:54We missed our connecting flight in Paris coming up from Sicily last year. By two minutes, they closed the door on us. And, you know, Charles de Gaulle is not the most friendly place. It was awful. But thank God we had all the kids close with us because obviously we had to stay in Paris. Obviously kids are much messier than we are, right? So it was no problem for us to stay in our clothes. We got to the hotel, we got into robes, we took our clothes off right away. And then, because it was just a short flight, obviously from Sicily to Charles de Gaulle. And when we went downstairs for dinner, the kids got food all over themselves and we were able to like clean them up, get them cozy, put them in pajamas.

12:40They had such a sense of normalcy because they had so much of their stuff that was really, really helpful. Then in terms of packing for them, I try to pack as minimal as possible. We only bring a couple pairs of shoes. Maybe we buy water shoes. When we are in Sicily every year, they're really cheap. They're the shoes that Davide grew up wearing. They sell them all over the place. And those will be shoes that they wear often on the trip. We obviously put them in sweaters on the plane, and that is their one sweater for the trip. Same with me and Davide. Whatever sweater we wear on the plane is our sweater for the trip because it is 1 million degrees.

13:17The chances of us needing a sweater is really rare, but that's what we do. Also in my carry-on bag is a large bag of diapers, the micellar water in a travel size, and I have one set of wipes, of the travel size wipes, in the diaper bag. So the bag is diapers, micellar water, and the wipes. I can hand that bag off extremely easily, but I also keep another of the travel wipes loose in the bag because obviously I use that to clean off my hands, clean off their hands, clean off their faces, clean up our area. And if Davide goes to the bathroom with the wipes and something happens while he's gone, I don't want to be like, oh my God, I don't have the wipes.

13:58So there's always two wipes. Each human is able to have a wife. I have their favorite snacks. Again, I listed them on the Amazon. Carmela in particular, you know, has become a picky eater at her age. And so I have what we call like her safe foods, which are Archer beef sticks, acute protein bars, the Fit Joy pretzels. She loves anything from Made Good. It's like a sugar-free, gluten-free granola kids brand that we love, love, love, love, love. She eats those like crazy. So I just make sure that I have like a bunch of stuff for her that makes her feel good. I have both of their little mini travel size or like kid size Yetis.

14:37His is blue, hers is pink. That way we're making sure that they are drinking water. Carlo also will get like obsessed with drinking out of a bottle, then he'll spill it. I just don't even want like, they have their emotional support water bottles. He has a stuffy. So does she. And then like lots of little toys. And then the beach clothes. Yeah, that's my carry-on situation. Oh, then I have my little like carry-on bag, which is a Dior bag that I love. And like it always stays the same. I always keep just like buying the same products. That bag is always ready for me to grab and go whenever I'm traveling.

15:15And that has wired headphones that go into my phone. it has the clean slate spritz from barefaced because i don't know i like i saw someone make a video on tiktok about how like everyone's like doing facials on the plane and how the plane has so much bacteria so like opening your pores in that way is kind of really gross and i just thought like oh yeah it's probably like in my best interest to just spend my time disinfecting my skin and killing the bacteria and that's what that's what the clean sprayed spritz does it has ibochloric in it, but it also is really moisturizing. It doesn't dry your skin.

15:49So I'm like spritzing that all the time. And then I'll use the Summer Fridays jet lag mask around my eyes and I'll just keep layering that. I have the Goop lip mask, which I love. I have the Loctane, I pronounced that so wrong, Lossatine, Lossatine, the iconic Frenchman. I have their cuticle oil that's always in that bag. The rich cream, the rich hand cream from Flamingo Estate is in that bag, which is just such a special treat. And I do have some like eye masks in there. I never really used them, but I love like when I remember to do so and I feel fabulous having like an eye mask on when I land.

16:28I got a big fat pair of Gucci glasses that cover my whole face because I do not wear makeup on the plane ever, ever, ever, especially on these overnight flights. I also always bring the skinny confidential mouth tape with me on a plane because my biggest fear on a plane besides an emergency is falling asleep with my mouth open. We are not in business class or first class. So my head is bobbing and I always have that tape on me so I can tape on my mouth. It helps me sleep much better. And then I'm not waking myself up and like, oh my God, my mouth was open. It's honestly, I started doing that like a year ago and it's been like increased my pleasure in flying like exponentially.

17:10I also always have an eye mask to cover my eyes. And then I didn't do it on this trip, but if I'm traveling by myself, I'll bring compression socks. Like my bag was getting full and heavy by the time we were taking off and I like didn't want to, I was like, whatever.

19:28So for like 115 years, they redefine innovation and craftsmanship in the bathroom. And I'm really excited to talk about this because when you think about where they must have started 150 years ago. Think about like how unbelievably innovative they are, that they are now re-imagining the relationship with the bathroom in personal health with their new device, the Dakota. So the Dakota is an attachment that fits discreetly on your toilet. It's really chic. It's streamlined and beautiful. It took me one second to set up and it communicates with an app on your phone and it works in the background of your routine, turning your body signals into understood trends and insights.

20:09And then it sends it to the Kohler health app, which is genius and unbelievable. It's incredibly easy to use. It just works passively in your life. It takes minutes to set up and you just use the bathroom like normal while the Kohler health analyzes your bar markers with the Dakota and sends you over the insights within minutes. The Dakota turns your everyday bathroom routines into meaningful insights about your gut health, your hydration, and even the presence of blood without any manual logging. And over time, Kohler is going to help you really build and understand your baseline. So you know, it's normal for you and you can take action when something changes.

20:43Just genius, brilliant work. Oh, I'm so obsessed with technology and innovation in this way, especially when it comes to like really beautiful, timeless American brands. I'm just like really happy to have this product. Learn more at KohlerHealth.com and use code PIA one year. That is PIA, the number one in year. for a free annual app membership when you purchase the Dakota.

21:12I also throw in clinical immunity, which is one of my favorite pills for immunity. There's a quick start version where if you take like six, it'll kill your cold. I also love wish garden herbs, but I just ran out of it before our trip. So I always bring clinical immunity and we take two of those a day to make sure that we do not get sick. That's very important. And on my big suitcase, and by the way, I only bring like maybe two pairs of shoes on these trips. Like I really keep it really, really, really chill. We always have a laundry bag and that way, like, you know, we're moving from place to place and we're gone for three weeks.

21:52I don't obviously don't want dirty clothes mixing with the clean clothes. So as the trip progresses, this, like, you know, the laundry builds up and then we can just have a bag where we just drop everything off. And that's like really, really helpful because we either drop it off or where we're staying. Sometimes we'll like do it by ourselves. I remember one year we were in Pantellaria. Davide did his laundry. And one of our friends who was with us, like took a photo of Davide and I hanging up our laundry and we posted it. And someone was like, oh, like the fake doing of the laundry. And I was like, no, this is how people do laundry here.

22:23Like there are no dryers. You hang up your clothes. It's really beautiful. Definitely more time consuming. Makes me grateful to have access to a washer and dryer system at our house. But that's how we do laundry. So no, that was not fake laundry doing. These kids are dirty. You know, we're eating a lot on these trips and we're sweating a lot and we're eating a lot of ice cream. And we're, you know, dipping our fingers into potato chips and wiping our bodies and faces like it is greasy and sweaty and sticky. So laundry is a must. I have all my stuff and packing cubes, obviously. And then this trip, I brought two of my old film cameras because I have like a crazy collection of contacts, yes, you could keep boards that I've had for the last like 10 years.

23:15And none of them, you know, these cameras are a million dollars now because they're trendy and then they break all the time. So I brought two. I don't know if either one of them are going to work. I brought some film. I also brought a digital camera. I got a Sony a few years ago and like never used it. So I figured I would step up my game and use my Sony camera. I also bring a little microphone set. So that hooks into my phone with two microphones. So Davide and I can record podcasts that goes into like my little electronics thing. And then in terms of like my toiletries, I use that parallel travel bag.

23:56Parallel, it's P-A-R-A-L-L-E-L. They have this travel toiletries bag that I found years ago. It's flat on the bottom, so it sits on a counter. And the two, like you unzip it from the top and you fold down the two sides and everything just sits perfectly in the bag. So like on the little panels that fold down where you put all your brushes and like lip liners, there's places for everything. There's all these little pockets and all these little like nooks and crannies. And there's like Velcro so you can arrange it in the way that you want. But I literally get travel sizes of every single thing and stick it in there.

24:35It weighed a lot, but it was like a brick, but it's all my stuff. And like, I'm obviously going to maintain how I fucking look and bring my makeup and my skincare on these trips. So I got the mini size of Dr. Diamond. I got the mini size of You Beauty. I get all the same minis. I love the glow from say, the say setting spray I have. I have a mini mascara. Instead of bringing the Rode, I think I brought one Rode blush. Instead of bringing the Rode bronzer stick because it was getting like really crowded in the bag, I have the Victoria Beckham contour stick because it's like super thin and stood up really easily in the bag.

Read the full transcript

25:20I'm using my Say brush. There's like, there's a long Say brush that has two different sides. I'm using that for my setting powder. I'm using the other side for my blush. I got a mini Anastasia translucent setting powder. I am a matte girl. I'm like not trying to be greasy because greasy is my baseline. So I got that. I've been obsessed with RMS Beauties. There's a blush that I love right now. It's called Rose something. I'll link it all. And then there's a bronzer. I have to use powdered things. I love using my road. I love using my contour sticks. I love everything that's creamy, but it has to be set with powdered things.

26:01Otherwise it just drips down my chin. I also brought, say, mini shampoo and conditioner, which I use for me and the kids because we have not been in one place for longer than four nights. So some places we rent, some places are hotels. I just like can't depend on their being shampoo there. I also brought the Crown Affair. Did I say say shampoo and conditioner? It's not. It's Crown Affair. Crown Affair, mini shampoo and conditioner, the Crown Affair leave-in conditioner, and Honest, the Honest company, Honest, whatever, the kids brand. I have the detangler, which I use for myself and for Carmella, which is just fucking fabulous.

26:42And you need to bring like a little travel brush with you. I have it in my bags. I bring it to the beach. Like our hair is being brushed all the time because the dreadlocks get really, really, really intense. And I don't want to have to like cut chunks out. Oh, the K18 wet, but like dry shampoo, like sprays on. It's the only thing that makes my bangs manageable. So I got the mini version of that.

27:13This episode is brought to you by Minnow, which I'm so excited to say out loud. Minnow was started by my friend Morgan Smith almost 10 years ago, who is a mom and an entrepreneur who grew up in Laguna Beach and now lives in Charleston. And you can just genuinely really feel that in the designs because there's a beautiful sun-kissed color palette, tons of custom prints and details that make it obvious someone actually thought about how family lives in these pieces, not just how they photograph because she is a mom. I have had my children in minnow since the day that they came out of my bodies because it's the cutest stuff.

27:49And all of our friends have had their children in Minnow. Like I'm getting hand-me-downs from Minnow still from all of my girlfriends. I can't tell you how meaningful it is to know that someone that you love so much has created a brand that is such an instrumental part of my children's lives. And all of my friends, children, just like the cutest thing ever. The girls' rash guard one piece and the boys' boardies are on repeat over here. The girls' Rashguard is one of the best inventions ever because not only are they some of the cutest, most beautiful designs, they all have like little bows on the back where they button, but every suit has a UPS of 50 plus protection.

28:28So it's blocking 98 % of the UVA and UVB rays, which matters so much when it comes to like all the beach time that we're doing. And right now their new collection is out, the Cabana capsule, which celebrates days spent Lingering by the Sea, which is exactly what we're doing right now on vacation. And our family happens to star in this campaign. It was shot at our house, which I feel is so beautiful. And so like speak so well to the collection because we shot it here and it was so beautiful and everything was so cute. We packed it all up and we brought it to Sicily and it's just like heaven on earth being able to see my children in these cute little like yellow stripe bathing suits is just adorable.

29:30I'm obsessed with my minis. Oh, I got all the minis of Barefaced. I cannot travel without out their skin pads. And so I brought those because I want to do one exfoliating a week. And then I do the daily ones to make sure that I don't get any acne and I'm really clean. I usually use the micellar water to clean my face, but I've realized that that requires like a cotton pad and I didn't want to bring any of those. So I love, love Alex Earl's skincare stuff. Like the makeup remover is fucking elite, but the pharmacy, but she doesn't make travel size. So I got the pharmacy one because Alex has made me obsessed with using like an oil to remove my makeup because it just works so well.

30:11I also use all the OC travel products. I love OC so much. So I have their oil for my skin and I have their face wash, which is so good. I brought that face wash with me to both my pregnancy, like when I gave birth both times because you just feel so, so, so clean afterwards. My goal is to feel like very clean, make sure I'm not getting clogged. I'm in the sun all day. And I also want to be able, like we're shooting some stuff while we're here and having like a lot of meetings. So I want to be able to like do my hair and do my face in a way that makes me feel good and confident. I brought tons of my lip liners.

30:45All of this is linked. I have a separate sub stack. That's all for my toiletries. And I'm telling you, like, you know, it's like weeks that we're traveling and that toiletry bag is a fucking slam dunk. I like bring it with me everywhere. It just sits on a counter. I open it up. I don't have to take anything out. It allows me to be super, super organized. And then another thing that I do that's really handy is I have a bag that just says like beach products on it. And I have all the stuff that we could need at the beach. So I have an extra hairbrush, like a detangler brush. I have an extra of the detangler spray for Carmela's hair.

31:20I have Tubby Todd SPF. I have Tubby Todd SPF. I have actually all of them. Like there's a stick and a cream and a spray. And then I also have the For All of Us. And that is like a really nice grab and go bag. My also my really good tip that I love is that my LL Bean bag that goes on the plane with me becomes my beach bag on the trip. And then I bring this trip. I brought two bags, which is like crazy for me. But I brought two like purses that can fit the travel size wipes, two diapers and, you know, like a lip gloss and lip liner for me. And that's all I need to really carry around on the trip.

32:01And I think that's it for me, like little tips and tricks. I was able to travel really streamlined. Oh, I also bring lots of snacks, like extra, extra snacks. So I have safety foods for when we're like, we're on long drives. Obviously we have auto grill and lots of things, but like I have Carmela's safety foods and I have protein bars. And then for me, I bring some of my supplements that are essential to me. But I also bring the Ballerina Farms protein powder, cowboy colostrum, and bone broth. And I love the Chromo Wellness bone broth, the powdered bone broth, because it tastes super, super, super delicious.

32:38And I need to get something in my stomach kind of like right away. And I want to make sure that I don't ever have coffee on an empty stomach or I'm not starting my day with a pastry. So a lot of these places we've been able to grocery shop or go downstairs, There's like, you know, so many hotels have like amazing breakfasts and we're able to have yogurt and eggs and things that we're used to. But like I learned the first year traveling to Sicily with Davide, like this is before I was diagnosed with PCOS. Like I have such crazy insulin resistance and my blood sugar gets so affected by sugar, carbs and coffee in the morning that I would feel so sick all day and I would be miserable to be around.

33:18And so I stopped trying to be like the easy fun girl who was like willing to eat everything. And I was like, I can have all of those things so long as I have a really big protein breakfast, then I'm chilling. And so I started doing that. And I make sure that I'm having protein. By the way, also like the Valerina Farms protein powder tastes so good with a shot of espresso and some water iced in it. So like even if I just have that for breakfast, but I definitely need protein. So between the big bag of snacks that I pack in my suitcase that gets checked in and the big bag that has all of my proteins and my bone broth and my supplements, those bags obviously get used during the trip as do all of the diapers.

34:04so while my bag is like kind of like very stuffed on the way there it ends up lightening up a lot of space and that allows for me to maybe do like a little bit of shopping while I'm here obviously I love to like buy a little vintage things and send it back we're doing a lot of R &D for baroncini really excited about that can't wait to do a separate whole podcast on that but I hope some of this was helpful you just want to feel like in control and you just want to know where everything is and have everything labeled. And I think, you know, having a positive attitude about having kids on the plane is essential and being able to have a partner who is not like, where's this?

34:41And what's that? And did you bring this? Like if you have a bag that sits in between the two of you under the kid's feet, they could easily reach in and grab a snack or grab a wipe or grab a diaper or grab a change or grab something without having to like bother you and ask and like get tiffy. Like the goal is to avoid any sort of snapping or tension as much as possible. And so like, I don't know, the night before we left, Davide walked up to me. He was like choked up and he was like, you do a lot for our family. Like you make things really organized and like I'm really proud of you and I love you.

35:14And it was like a beautiful, incredible way to like start. Okay, for all my links and everything, more broken down. Obviously go to my stuff stack and I will see you guys next week.

35:30And that, ladies and gentlemen, concludes this week's episode of Everything is the Best. I hope you enjoyed it. Please rate, review, subscribe, all that stuff. Maybe leave a comment.
