In short
A Sicily trip recap focused on food (mussels/cod), family time, beach/lido routines, and parenting logistics with two toddlers, plus reflections on enjoying vacations without “content” pressure.
Guests
Davide (host’s husband/partner; grew up in Sicily, played soccer professionally; cooks and drives; manages family travel logistics). The episode also includes mentions of family/friends (Davide’s family in Taormina/Catania; friends who run/know lidos; Rob, J.Lo’s stylist; Justine, the host’s wedding hairstylist; Massimo, a jewelry-brand partner; “Nonna Lydia,” “Margarita,” “Tomaso,” and others), but they are not interviewed as guests on-air.
Key claims
Sicily travel works best with frequent moves (typically 2–5 nights) to find the right town/beach; Italian summer schedules are late (wake ~10, breakfast ~10:30, lunch ~1–1:30, dinner ~8–9:30); beach “communal napping” is a normal rhythm; parenting anxiety shouldn’t prevent trips.
Notable examples
Taormina dinner in a church-square where Davide proposed; Carlo’s soccer moment with Davide’s brother Ricardo; lido logistics (chairs, stairs, parking, service); a Dolce & Gabbana event on Isola Bella with babysitting; a detailed sleep schedule for flights and red-eyes.

0:14Hi Davide. Hello everyone. Guys, we're recording this alfresco at our house right now. I love it. New format, you know, you have these little cicadas. they're not cicadas they are um oh my god oh they're crickets how do you say grillo grillo grillo grillo grillo grillo i love that one that just goes these are very gentle lovely night sounds they are beautiful gentle lovely night sounds when we were in Sicily I was binging for some reason which for the one listening there might not be muscles but the difference between the way we make them versus the way mussels usually are, which is more on the French side.
1:20Which I also like, give me a creamy, buttery, buttery, mussels with some fries and a martini. And I love when you bite into a garlic or an onion, something that is so acidic and juxtaposes the creaminess of the sauce. We make them more on a light sauce, either just lemon, olive oil, pepper, parsley, garlic and red or chili pepper, or with a lovely tomato sauce, more like a zuppa, which is the way my wife made them tonight. And they were a 10. 10 out of 10. I'd like to say... You have great intuition when you cook. Okay. So Davide's giving me a lot of credit for the cod say, but he is what slam dunked them.
2:18But I gave you that, you know, next time you can go on your own. I wish I watched you more of what you did. I mean, I know what you did. He cleaned each of them individually, incredibly enthusiastically and with a lot of vigor. And then he put them in a pan with olive oil, garlic, white wine. Parsley. Parsley. How do you call the legs of a parsley? Stems. Parsley stems only because that's where the taste is. Once the sofrito gets hit, then you put some white wine. then you put the the muscles and you cover them for like two minutes only one didn't open huh? I got them from McCall's in Atwater and then I made you know after that you filter them you leave the because the muscles are going to release still some liquids while they open so you strain that with a very tight strainer and you leave it on a bowl you leave this beautiful golden juice and you leave the mussel on top of course of a strainer and then and then I did olive oil, garlic a red pepper a can of tomatoes, whole tomatoes but I crushed the tomatoes with my hands as I put them in and then we let it cook down and then we added the liquid from Davide's.
4:02A little by little, you let this peeled tomatoes sauce and reduce a little bit. And then we added in the liquid. You put the mussel back in. And then we put the mussels back in. High heat, high fire, high flame. And then you put this golden juice, you toast some bread. Obviously salt the sauce. Some parsley at the end. Lots of parsley. and then we had it with some old bread that we toasted with lemon on top it was fucking ridiculous i got i got caught a lot while we were there and there were a bottle of white wine there were i think that was kind of an important bottle of wine and i didn't even i don't i only had one glass i will hide this bottle because i'm afraid that your mom is i know she's my saving it She gets these ideas That she wants to see Can I Before we get into Before we get into Let's see how much Before we put this live But she doesn't My mom doesn't So what Davide is referring to So my mom Does My mom For some reason Has just this like Unbelievable scarcity mindset No This This fucking This This wine is$20 Who's an exception $20 bottle of wine.
5:18The retail typically runs$15.99. It was a great wine. It's fabulous. My mom's been sitting on it. It's a Riesling. It's the Pierre Spa Riesling. Great label, great bottle. It looks very important. It felt very fancy. My mom. It's a great$20 bottle. My mom, before we got married, my mom had, and she does this a lot. Well, she'll like, find a bottle of something or someone will give her a bottle of something. and she's like, I'm saving it for a special moment. I'm saving it for a special moment. I'm like, okay, don't touch this bottle because we're saving it for a special moment. Here I am, 2019.
5:56We are celebrating our wedding. Full wedding at this house. And I am. I am very happy. It's 3 a.m. But also, by the way, I am drunk. It's our wedding night. But it also, and this is just like unfortunate planning. It's all we could do. and this is the however what i'm what this is our seventh wedding anniversary of our like second wedding we got married on august 10th david's birthday is august 11th so it was his birthday at fucking midnight yeah so i'm celebrating and he's going to my birthday so then like we bring out a birthday cake for him evan funky's the chef at our wedding he's bringing out fucking pizza there's Nutella everywhere.
6:38We're celebrating. And we turned the garage into a makeshift kitchen and Davide goes into the refrigerator and he finds this bottle of Dom that my mom had been saving. It's a magnum. That literally said, for an important moment, Davide grabbed it. It didn't have a post-it on it. And was like, what could be a more important moment than her daughter's wedding? and I started drinking I was drinking it's iconic photos and we're like yes and then my mom literally is like and I'm holding it like a baby and she's like that was for an important moment almost mad she was mad low key mad I look at her I'm like name an important moment mom name a more more important moment you know we love to troll her with that story oh my god anyway so So in honor of Davide's birthday and to reminisce of our wonderful trip, I don't, you know, everybody, everyone's response to us being in Italy and messages are always, don't you want to move there?
7:52Don't you want to move there? Like, guys, we're on vacation. Everyone's like, you look so happy. I'm like, yeah, I'm not working right now. It's mental. Like, but we were having the best time because we were on vacation. I'm very lucky that I come home and I share this house with you and we live for as much as we work and as busy as we are and how much stress we have. You and I relax and cook and do home. By the way, this is whether or not this is this house or my adorable tiny apartment in Venice, which I felt the same energy there. You and I together. I love that bedroom. My rented bedroom in Brooklyn.
8:33You made me feel that way there. You cook. I think there is. There's music. There's always a beautiful vibe happening. And so I have no problem transitioning back home because. Yeah, there is something to say about in a place in life where you feel you are at the right place and. When timing is the right timing. I love what you just said. I think it wasn't necessarily, I don't feel the urge to, besides the people I got up answered to our work or people I work with or people that I am in business with, I don't have any sort of urge to justify or to explain anything to anybody, which I feel already pretty blessed and lucky place to be.
9:30So getting into the trip, I think saying that we love mobility is really like the thesis of a Barentini vacation because we don't ever stay in one place for more than five nights. It's usually an average of three or four, sometimes two. it's getting harder with two kids yeah man this trip was
10:00Carlo was yeah it was just cause Carlo's entering his terrible too so we were just dealing with like but for every time he would be opinionated which honestly was like he was really not that bad the last two nights I agree he was tired the last two nights he was he was he was bad on the way back he was he was done with it he was so good on the plane too like he was like we really did so good that the last night and i was really upset that it was this night that he was so bad because we were with people who are really important to us and like nonna lydia and margarita and tomaso and like everybody who we do the olive oil with and they love him and they want to see him and they're they're like family to us so they kept wanting to like take him and walk around with him and he was yelling like no at them and i was so like oh it was just it was out of character for him and i it felt sad to see them like rejected by carlo when they wanted to like connect with him so much but he was exhausted so i mean basically I have a long time I had to connect.
11:13Yes. So basically every trip we land in Catania and we fly out of Palermo. And we stay close to Davide's family. And part of the reason why we rip around a lot is we're trying to figure out where we want to buy a place. And our goal in the next... I'm also trying to figure out, sorry if I interrupted you, an ideal scenario with two kids that love spaces and love the water. Every town is so different. Every beach is so different. Every beach club. You know, maybe we love a square, but we don't love the beach town associated with the square. Like there's a lot of particular. I mean, literally, we're always like we talked about this, too, the other night, like all of our favorite squares we've been to.
12:04like in all of italy because each square has a vibe and some squares are more active than others and it's like your square is like the pulse and the heartbeat of the town that you're in and same thing with the beaches right it's like some beaches are really rocky it's inappropriate for kids and i wouldn't want to recommend that for people to come some beaches are some of them is just pure logistic yeah so we started the trip on davide's side of the island we landed in catania I want to talk about your brothers taking Carlo to play soccer we had a great time we had a great time I'm very happy I'm happy to talk about it I'm happy to have the opportunity to talk about it thank you for having me again and I watched Odyssey last night so I kind of feel a little bit like Ulisse right now talking about my Ithaca yeah we landed in Catania the first night we met with my family we stay in taormina which is of all of the city on on the coast i was born in probably the most served fair to say you know so so it offers a little better services uh and it's pretty it's very pretty it's nice to wake up in the morning and walk in the course so but at night we go closer to my hometown and you know we met my father and my brothers and we had a great meal and my brother was playing Carlo and Ricardo phone each other I've never Ricardo was having a great time I've never seen there's a video that's so natural the kid speaks these two they phone each other like a soul mate Carlo was so giggly I have never seen him i was eating dinner and it's so nice when your family's there because they just keep taking him away and he remember i have a video where i'm like crying laughing because he's bouncing carlo and then he would stop bouncing and carlos we are having dinner in this little trattoria and uh the the the trattoria is the church and a square which sounds like such a cliche and Ricardo of course first night he wanted to impress the kids so he got a soccer ball so first you know they're breaking eyes they're trying to figure out each other Carmela is being an angel with my brother Alessandro they energy wise they really like each other so Alessandro is staging her hair is feeding her this pastel burro for like she didn't want to eat that night Ricardo is playing with Carlo and Ricardo walks back in with this walker ball and he's like oh and he's like that's like this with his head then it's like I'm like what why are you shaking your head and he look at me he's like he doesn't have it he's talking about the passion for soccer talking about talent it's okay it doesn't have it like you just met the kid he's two he learned to walk like literally you look at me shake his head it's like listen he's a nice kid he doesn't have carlo i mean davide and his brother ricardo were absolute soccer freaks slept with soccer balls in their beds so does gordo he's just a soccer ball but i was like davide i was like davide he's two he doesn't know and david is like by two i was back in ripping kicking this ball up and down I think it goes with...
15:45But also you grew up seeing other kids playing soccer. I think it goes... One thing I love about talking about Sicily and talking about this trip is to talk about the nature of certain things. Sicilians are, I might need to put myself in that category, of course, a little bit absolutist, you know, in their way to see life and is an island of big feelings. so Ricardo just he felt like this kid now is going to play doesn't matter but you Davide and his brother were very good soccer players Davide played professionally and so you know it's kind of like this thing for sure we both but it was very funny I was fucking dying I was like how did you we come from a culture of how did you know that my father was my uncle was a soccer player my uncle was actually the only one that they made was a cousin of my father actually married to the irelig but uh that being said it's so funny that we started the story with started a trip with this dinner because it was one of the lightest moment that we have we had in this vacation lightest might not be the right term was it was a very happy time for a moment i felt like you know you know i think my mom was the ring that kind of put everything together and having you there and the kids it's almost a few guys uh where the ring that my mom used to be and you know i'm sad eva wasn't there eva wasn't there franceschino was there my father was there and everybody was there we had a great time so we started it we kick it that way we started the trip that way by the way that restaurant was where Davide proposed the first time Davide took me to that restaurant that's right he called my dad outside of the restaurant you were so funny about that trip because you kept like telling me you were going to propose to me and then I was like did you I wasn't telling you that I wasn't proposing I mean about every index or every indicator I thought indication was that I was going to do it.
18:03I was just very nervous. But he kept, he wasn't acting like himself. And so we went to dinner at that restaurant, I think just you and I, and I asked. No, you, we were with a couple of friends. Oh, we were with all your friends. But I, somehow it came up and you basically said, yes, I'm going to propose to Pia. And I said, did you ask my dad? No, but it wasn't that way. No, it didn't happen that way. I'm talking to them in Italian about it. and I think you had a sense of that and and then I went outside because your father called me I went outside and I had a talk with your father and I walked back in and you asked me like what do you guys talk about?
18:42I told you later Is that how that happened? That what he was there I remember being inside the restaurant and watching you pacing in front of the church and you were on the phone with him Yeah because I called him didn't pick up then he called me back and it's dinner time where we are so like okay starting his day and i and i asked him that yeah so cute he was so happy i remember someone i remember they call my coach you know good evening good morning coach coach you know what i think i'm gonna propose it to your daughter and he said to me something like i couldn't be more happy and you got my like all around like you got my approval so many like i love you anyway without turning down the but but that yeah it was there so so also another thing i think that we love about sicily going back with the kids there is this re there is this you know we re-walk that path that we went through during the trip and now we do it with our kids that are the result of us loving each other a nice moment there's a lot of these nice moments that we have where we're you know we go to the same places all the time and we'll reminisce about you know time is fucking passing right so we're just like holy shit like look at us now we're i mean being back there with two last year carlo was was one and like you know it was yeah just seeing him now was like a little formed man there to like familiarity they remember that or if they they they you know sometimes we go to places like oh last year they loved it and you know with Carmela like she's such of a feeling based person that we just tried literally during the entire trip to make them happy, make them both comfortable and happy and feeling their familiar feeling you know
21:07this episode is sponsored by cotton the fabric of our lives okay so you know how i am all about fabric i check tags i always have and i honestly the older that i get the more i realize that what you put on your body matters just as much as what you put in it and we're not going to get it perfect every time, but we're definitely going to try. Honestly, summer is the season I do the most wardrobe thinking. You're dressing for graduation dinners, long travel days, outdoor, everything. And in my case, summer involves a lot of heat and a lot of movement for me and my kids. And so one thing I keep coming back to every single time is cotton.
21:43I love it. Cotton breathes. It's like genuinely breathable. When it's hot and you're outside, cotton is the thing. It does not trap heat. It does not irritate your skin. It moves with you. I also think about the fact that it's a natural fiber. It comes from the earth and it does not shed microplastics into the water when you wash it. So that part matters to me a lot. And from a purely practical standpoint, cotton just lasts. My favorite pieces, the ones I've had for years are cotton. They're still my favorite pieces that I keep coming back to and back to. It keeps it shape. It gets softer with time, not worse.
22:19It's genuinely the buy nice or buy it twice situation. You invest once and you stop thinking about it. We have cotton all over our home. We have cotton sheets in all of our bedrooms. And we also are a big, like kind of like white tea family, you know? So between myself and Davide and the kids, like we have been, especially at the beginning of spring, now that we have like a whole beautiful summer ahead of us. Like I have been buying packets of white tees for all of us to like live in through summer. And it's so cute looking at these little shirts that Carlo wears and like seeing how happy he is just running around his little white t-shirts.
23:06So whether it's your denim, whether it's your bedding, whether it's your everyday basics, just check the tag and choose cotton. As they say, cotton really is the fabric of our lives. Learn more at thefabricofourlives.com and find them at discovercotton on Instagram. That is thefabricofourlives.com and discovercotton on Instagram.
23:35It is also a trip for us where we are obviously focused around going to beaches where they can rip all day because so many beaches are rocky. True. And so... Yeah, landscape-wise, we need something friendly. So we started from Taormina. And we do Taormina because there are so many great Lidos and beaches right there. And Lido La Pena is this very happy place, family-owned and run. And the beach is very nice and contained and she can't really you know the kids can really go it's very friendly it's very very nice and and i love to stay there all day with this this very uh this nice apartment close to the course so termina was a very happy moment for us some friends came one night to see us and i i brought this up to somebody recently because obviously if you've never been it's something to point out but if you're you know if you go to Italy specifically and you're not at a hotel that has a beach Italy is full of Litos and you have to call and you book your chairs some of them require that some especially I mean it's a nice season yeah it's fucking packed packed packed packed some of them answer on the phone some of them answer some don't if they don't answer on the phone WhatsApp them they'll likely text you Some of them don't have the tower.
25:12Yes, some places don't have towers. Some places do have towers. They all have different. Some places have a convenient parking next to it. Some of them don't have a convenient parking next to it. No parking. A lot of stairs. Or you got to walk 20 minutes to the... And a lot of these places, obviously, you have service to your chairs. And most of them don't have. And you can eat. But what I love about certain Litos, and most of them, I would say, the average, is the process of like getting there, unpacking swimming, and then going and sitting down at the restaurant for lunch. I like that too. And I love sitting down at the, you know.
25:48You cool down a little bit and you have a nice meal. You sit down, you slow down, you get out of the sun for a second because it's hot as fucking shit. And it's good, especially with kids. You can't just have that sun meeting up. And then you're full and then everybody takes a nap on the beach in your chairs. By the way. With someone next to the next chair. You've started, you know, talking about things. The communal, like, napping. The communal napping culture. Somebody has to stay up while you guys napping. But I enjoy it to see you. No, we took turns. You got naps in, too. Did I? Yeah. For sure.
26:31I have photos. I don't remember napping on the beach. But also, Carlo wants to nap on me. that's what i say you're a little bit of the mom the mom ship you know you have all of them together but i know but i will say in general like we went that time we went to tonight they're really putting an f for airplane oh well no i'm saying but in general the way like napping culture so like i find it's a real thing once you yeah i find sleeping obviously to be so intimate and what was it like three or four summers ago when we went to the cuccinelli's house and like swam and had lunch and then we all went back to the pool just like but then like everybody fell asleep yeah it's a common it's a really common thing and i was like oh my god like napping next to like carolina's mother felt like very cozy and sweet and intimate but it also felt very personal all everyone just like yeah we don't see nestles in for their nap it's it's more of a especially in the summer you know like the beach guy would nap they would take turn and some of them yeah it's adorable it's like a beautiful thing it's it's a thing yeah it it kind of pays this the the day in a very nice way actually the nap somebody once said to me the nap is like a pause of of a jazz musician you know like certain people understood the value of pauses that's a very romantic way to put it but you know it kind of tempo your day in a very nice way because you you you rush in the morning you want to get to the beach and get your meal and get everybody's in everybody's happy then you cool down then you eat then you're digesting and then you start again the second phase of the day you know yeah because then you swim again and then it's habitative time you gotta go home and shower.
28:28A lot of people were asking about what the sleep schedule is for the kids. So I'm going to break this down. So when we, so the, the plane there, we wake up really early. It's a 6am flight to New York. We all sleep on that plane. Then we land in New York. We, it's a two 30, but we pretend like that's like dinner because then essentially we're taking the red eye and we land in the morning. So they eat dinner there. We get on the plane. Everybody gets melatonin everybody sleeps that whole flight we wake up in the morning we rent cars we rent cars that have car seats i remember still and if he sounds tight it actually is tight as a schedule like we're trying to yeah we're trying to put all these pieces together because it works because and then you go to bed that night at like and there's no the kids obviously can take naps adults are not napping obviously then you go to bed at night at like you know nine or ten and then and then we're on and then literally like we don't have any issues so I remember Sylvia telling me Sylvia who is like one of our close friends who is from Sicily and like does the olive oil with us and I remember asking her a long time ago I was like so what was your summer schedule and And it's literally now this is this.
29:50So this is our summer schedule. She was like, this is it. So because I remember being like, wow, everyone's out so late. And this is all over Italy. This is no matter where you and this is all over Spain and France. This is normal places. People are out. Wake up. So you wake up. She would say you wake up around 10. So we would wake up or if we were at a hotel, we were rushing to get down there for breakfast in the morning because I wanted to make sure the kids had like a big breakfast. So I sometimes I would take just Carlo because Carmela is a sleeper and I would bring a plate back up for her to have bright, but whatever.
30:22It was like a struggle to make sure that we were making like a 10 a.m., 1030 breakfast every morning. So we'd sleep until 10, 1030. You and I maybe sometimes would wake up at nine and then go to the beach, do whatever. I mean, you know, we obviously went to the cemetery. We saw your mom. I can't believe we ran into your dad at the cemetery. We haven't even talked about that in general offline off this podcast. It was just fucking heartbreaking to pull up and be like, oh, my God, he's here. It's just like I didn't even have to call him. I knew he would have been there. And then God bless him. And then lunch is usually around 1 p.m.
31:001.30. Carlos nap. My goal would be 3.30, 4.30. Anytime in there. He needed to get it was a late afternoon nap and he needed to get a shit ton of fucking sleep in otherwise we were fucked for dinner yep and then dinner every night would be anywhere between and by the way carlo reaction on not having a nap wasn't he just in a great mood like like when he doesn't have a nap he's surprisingly energetic yeah in body maybe he has a little tolerance he's a little bit crumpy at this is the moment but he's very active like it's almost like he wants to push that tiredness he's proving proving it yeah he wants to prove you that he's fine dinner would be between you know we'd have aperitivo the kids loved chips and peanuts and olives at aperitivo they were drinking so much juice which is so cute and then they don't really have juice here that much and then dinner would be anywhere between eight and 9.30.
32:09Then obviously we'd walk the Corso. We'd get Carlo now knows anytime he sees a gelato place to stand in front of it and scream gelato, gelato, gelato. And then we go to bed anywhere between like 10 and 1 in the morning. And then we would do it all over again. Pretty much. You can see that's kind of the schedule that everybody. We create a pattern. So from Taormina, we spend there four days. We had a great time. I think that's as long as I think we did there five nights, actually. You're right. Then we went to, we moved from there to Siracusa. Which is just beautiful. Which is adorable. Lovely town.
32:52I combined in the town a visit to one of my best friends, Massimo. I work one day there. We shot some product. Massimo is magnificent. and he has a jewelry brand and he made my wedding ring. And Santino, Carmela, Godfather, literally drew from... He drew from Milan to Calabria. He drew from Milano. All the way down, he stopped in Calabria, picked up his wife, came to spend a night and a morning with us. So a quick stop in Syracuse, Ortigia area, two days, Fontana e Bianca. By the way... We went to eat one of our favorite spots. This is how loyal, I just want to say, watching you and your male friendships is really, really beautiful.
33:47And there is something beyond beautiful about the fact that it's so not a big deal for like that Santo is going to drive. How long is the drive from Milan to Calabria? Eight hours? No, it's 13 hours. Fuck. And then obviously Calabria to Sicily. Then you take the ferry over. Then, you know, it's like there was no question in his mind that he wasn't going to do that because Carmela's his goddaughter and he's obsessed with her and he loves us. And I think that... From Milano to Catania. It's like if you are in Los Angeles and you're going to America and you're in Aspen. Yeah, you drive to Colorado.
34:31So I drive to Aspen to have dinner, breakfast, and lunch with you. Anyway, back to the itinerary. That area is beautiful. And of course, we link it to a special person. But it's exceptionally beautiful. I say that, correct me, like every part we visit in Sicily is somehow networked to or linked to a person we love or a place we love or we kind of map the city. Cefalu is the only place that we... Cefalu is. and we've been there a few times logistically it's in the middle of two places Cefalu is a good break between the two posts it's a good in the middle land I will say Cefalu is so beautiful it's adorable Cefalu was fucking packed Cefalu and it's by the way it's a postcard By the way, Newport Beach right now is fucking packed.
35:32I mean, it's summer break, so I totally get it. But Cefalu is... It's a postcard. It's a postcard. It's a town that makes... Logistically, Cefalu makes no sense because it's a town building on a hill that goes down to the water, a little bit like Tormina, but it's slightly different. And the center of the town is... It's a joke. it's this port then opened so at night people are swimming it's a postcard it really is it really is a postcard so we from actually from Syracuse we went to Favignana so we drove to Trapani we moved to the other coast drove to Trapani parked the car this is not something that normal people would do with your kids a little charter little boat that brought us to Favignana which is an adorable adorable little island i love it part of the island with marittimo and levan so it's adorable i'm gonna give you guys island advice right now because we have been to all of them all the aeolian islands aeolian and aegadi we've been Not to all the islands, but to a good part of it.
36:53A good part of them. We went with two other couples and kids one time to Pantellaria. There's no beaches on Pantellaria. No. Pantellaria is a boat place. So, just so you guys know, if you open your phone and everyone's like, they are only an island, and you want to go there with kids, there's a likely chance that these places... Panarea. Panarilla we're also Panarilla this it's got to think about what you want to do with your kids listen an island by definition is a place you got to think about it because because an island by definition is a piece of land and a water you'd think would be 360 degrees fucking beach not super easy to reach it's not it's not super easy to navigate so also the Aeolian islands are far Famigna is the perfect example of that But it was a lovely visit.
37:52Does Capri even have a beach?
37:58Capri doesn't have a beach. I mean, I don't think so. No, besides that, I don't think so. No, it does have, but they're not beach. There are good places where you can go on a beach, but it's a rocky... Yeah, they're big rocks. like you have to jump it's not beach for the kids not a beach the way no not a beach the way Sicilia has it's also different different builders so Favignana has Favignana has a lovely lots of beaches and lots of Lido lovely beaches you know that we it's like our our routine is like lock in with a Lido lock in Lido pretty much is where we stay with Lido boss where we go to the to the Lido and we eat at night they know our name day two they then Davide like locks in he finds out who who Lidl Boss is he gets chummy with him then there then they got inside jokes and then next day we got our fucking chairs we want and then it's good for the kids because then it's like we need more water I mean there's the bathroom and we need to think it's all about being nice and respectful of you know of whoever role is in the place it's beautiful and then we know the wife by day two day three we know day two we were locked in with Fede by the end of day two Carlos Chauer got seeing all the fucking Lido boys by the way if you're young and single you need to be sleeping with these Lido boys can you imagine being did you do that job growing up I didn't I didn't want to say you must have hooked up with girls who were on vacation in Sicily when you were growing up Where were they mostly from?
39:46Northern Italy or all over the world? Northern of Europe, mostly. Like Germany? Yeah, big German. Are you speaking new German? No, nine. Where else were people, when you were growing up, where else were the tourists from? No, mostly like... France? Yeah, French, German. Were there Australians like there are now? No. no that's a new thing I can't believe how far the Australians travel to go to Italy not only but specifically Australians lately I've been with the Australians people spending a lot of time with the Australians people not only how of course generally speaking willing they are to travel the travelers how willing they are to get to a culture and And really understanding and appreciating it.
40:49And a lot of Australians people that I know that are extremely successful really knows how to capture that and how to business around that. But no, no, no, we didn't have a lot of Australians. Some Americans, but not as many. I adjusted the volume on your microphone. because sometimes you talk like this, you get really close and it gets loud. Yeah, I wanted to understand.
41:20Yeah, I was one of those bandits walking around very little in my pocket. God, summer romances. I was as, I was that. I had so, I loved my summer romances.

When my husband Nick died, people talked to me about surviving grief, but nobody talked to me about what grief might teach me.
43:41So I started asking a different question, not what did grief take from you, but what did grief teach you? On Good Grief, I'll sit down with extraordinary people from all walks of life about loss, resilience, healing, and the unexpected gifts that can emerge from our hardest chapters. Because grief touches every single one of us, but maybe, just maybe, the hardest chapters can teach us how to truly live. I'm Amanda Klutz, And this is Good Grief.
44:26Anyway, from Famigliana, which we had a lovely time, we went back to Trapani and we drove from there to Cefalu. We spent in Cefalu two days. That was just two days. we ate at the same restaurant again we just love a routine so we do the same thing like when we're in new york too where we are just everyone's like what are your favorite new york restaurants and i'm like we have the same and and i always see people eating at these great restaurants and i'm like i gotta be honest when is the two of us which i miss to go a little bit on an adventure with you sometimes we're going we're going we do have a wider spectrum of what we call with it no in new York no no no no beside New York I'm talking about in general traveling around with the kids we kind of wanted to guarantee that we have what we know so even in yeah in Cefalu we had was two days or three days it was just two nights and uh it fell we stayed there two weeks we walk a lot we went to the same place on the beach oh my god Carlo made a friend Carlo made a friend he made a friend with a 10 year old boy who's an only child who's traveling with his parents adorable kid and he was so beautiful and polite and Carlo would like see him yeah Sebastian really impressed Sebastian Sebastian Mama Bastion Mama Bastion Hi Sebastian Hi Sebastian He went to the paddle so cute Cefalu was lovely from Cefalu then we drove which is a beautiful drive uh to partana partana is where we where we have our business partner in baroncini and so we combine us on this stop because in famignana is where you shot your campaign and scopella between famignana scopella we oh we went to we went to went to Scopello after Favignana between before Cefalu we went to Scopello which is one of our happy places.
46:46You know what was nice is that we what was nice is and it's not a chore to see anybody but it does so there is this layer of fuck we gotta go meet our people right so like and by the way which most Most of the time we always got to be. We always do a lot. Try to do our best. So to have those eight days, and I planned it like that, where we were on an island and then went to Scopelo, and it was just us, and it was solely vacation for eight days, was like so lovely to just, because, you know, to have like an uninterrupted eight days with the four of us is like, I'm so thankful. it's so nice yeah some of the vacation some of the place we're staying and truly was an actual vacation of course we try to be off the grid as much as we can but still we gotta work and so every day we have no matter where we go we have always a moment in the morning and one moment before dinner usually where we take a little bit of time to work we share a little bit of time working, you know.
48:10Gavide was on his laptop a lot every... Yeah, more than the usual. But yeah, and then at night. For me, it's a good time actually after dinner when everybody's in bed and everybody's safe and done and had food and the day's over and it was a good hour, a couple of hours for me too. I still have so much to post from the trip because I'm like, don't... We had a lot of... we had a lot of, this trip felt very rich, very, very, it felt very nice. I had a great time. I had a wonderful time. It was a wonderful trip. I didn't want to like go through, and I talked about this on my last podcast. Like I didn't want to like go through my phone and like think about posting things.
48:54Like I needed to like post content. That word content is so odd when it's like, it's for on like a vacation, you know, I was just like, I don't feel like doing this. So we still have so much, to go through and look at but i was i was proud of myself for being in the moment on the vacation in that way where i wasn't like putting stuff together you know to like post and then and then things things gets the place things yeah there is also that that yeah when we travel and when we do these sort of trips with the family and we go to see the people we love and work with in certain cases there is a lovely way sometimes everything kind of fell at the right place you know including that I think I agree totally I totally that's like the right way to say it yeah to capture there are moments that we keep for ourselves there are moments that we love to share there are moments that just happen in front of us and are beautiful for the reason what I like the most about the strip or when we spend a lot of time with the kids and together we came back from the strip that felt that the kids were a little older and it's almost like if the time together is so dense and rich of experiences and feelings and literally like a day feels through a day you see your kid being happy sad bored engaged uh hungry serene anxious tired it's it's so many oh we you know like so like for instance I completely forgot that uh we had one night in Tarmina and we went to see this beautiful show and we want to play cool it's just we went to see this beautiful show we actually said what we went to see what J-Lo yeah wait so somebody wrote from the blog someone wrote on my post and was like she went all the way to ciscley to see jayla no i didn't we landed at the fucking airport of david david david's new hall passes jayla performing live take her on a spin babe i had an idea of Jennifer Lopez.
51:20Right around in the car. Jennifer Lopez's life in current shape, it's a godness. She's gorgeous. She's so gorgeous. That was a, by the way, total fluke. We land at the airport in Catania and I see people with signs that said Dolce and Gabana and I didn't tell Davide because he gets real. I knew you knew it. No, I didn't know until we landed and I saw the airport signs and I was like, fuck, there's a Dolce and Gabana in the minute. Because they're from Sicily. So I was like, one of them is. So then he found out that we, then we find out that they're doing an entire fucking event on like Isola Bella and like all this shit.
52:02And Davide was like, God damn it. This is going to, this fucking logistic. Because these places are hard to get around anyway. Like they're fucking so hard. Tarmina is a fucking nightmare to get around. And so, and we have our own car. It's not like we're being driven from place to place and being like dropped off and picked up. Like we are. We're trying to get to our parking spot, you know, which is a miracle. We got a parking spot. And so the first night there, or I think whatever, one of the first nights there was like an event and we were like stuck in traffic. We had to do a long day. The kids fell asleep in the back of the car.
52:32I love you recorded all the hard time of driving a car around. Oh, my God. I have to edit that. It was so funny. Davide driving is just like a hundred point turn. And then two of our very close friends, Rob is JLo's stylist of 17 fucking years. And Justine, who did my hair for my wedding. You know what's funny that I didn't tell you and it hit me afterwards. Justine did my hair right here for this wedding that happened right here. We did no hair trial, no nothing because I'm a type B bitch. And I showed her a photo of a model from Dolce & Gabbana Altamoda was my hair reference and now she does JLo's hair and Dolce & Gabbana love JLo and had her do a whole thing for Dolce & Gabbana Altamoda which is their couture show which is some of the most beautiful regardless of if we're just talking about Italian craftsmanship we went the day after we went to a portion that is not open to the public or to all the it's we saw the collection and it was it makes you want to cry it's like museum worthy but i also have to say what was amazing about this event so rob was like you guys are here like come down so we had a family friend of ours we put the kids to bed and we had a family friend of ours babysit which was really funny like getting a babysitter in sicily but obviously, you know, called a family member.
54:04But what's extra funny is like that event was not an event for celebrities or influencers. That event was for Dolce & Gabbana's top clients in the world, their biggest spenders. So the crowd was like, I've never seen anything like it. Like imagine what you think the top spending Dolce & Gabbana customer is globally. and then being in a room with all of them. You're talking, guys. Singapore, Miami. New York, that beautiful woman. I saw that. I thought that. Oh, my God. Half of a book. I went up to this moment. I was like, you are one of the most beautiful women. Half of a book. Where do you live?
54:47She goes, oh, my God. She looked out of one of those. Lives between New York and Miami. Old New York book. Magnificent woman. The plastic surgery that happens in New York City is fucking elite. It's just. Anyway. Anyway, that was like a really funny part of the trip. That was a great part of the trip. That was like an unlanded... No, but what I'm saying is like when we came home from that and they were both asleep and then we went to see them sleeping and then there is this, even the roller coaster of emotion that your kids go through, I find it beautiful. Because a day is like you see so much of the spectrum of, and they might see something that they find so special or they didn't see it.
55:37And they might try something that they didn't try the year before. And they might taste something unusual. Even the day before. Out of the blue, the kids would start eating something that here they would not even think to smell. Like today, I'm cleaning muscles with Carlo, which during the trip understood how delicious. and so it's like you know there is I don't know it's wonderful every time we travel we reach you know it's challenging and it really I think put us it tests us as a parent and as a traveler as a human and it's beautiful. By the way this applies to like going camping with your kids anytime.
56:26Yeah every time we come back on the way back we always say like Like this is challenging. This is, needs a lot of resources of any kind. But every time we are so grateful that we can do that. And a lot of people ask about the sleeping arrangement, which is that if there was an extra bedroom where we stayed, the kids would sleep in there and hearing them like giggle in the room together because they obviously have separate rooms here was like some of the most... One night they were going hard. Oh, I mean, I'll never forget that. Sometimes Carmela would sleep in our bed, but I've talked about this at length and we'll die on this hill.
57:10Like having private, intimate moments with my husband away from my kids is what regulates our nervous system and makes us better parents. And I love my husband and I love his naked body up against my naked body. Okay, we want to go there. Okay, let's go. So like, you know, if someone's like, the kids aren't in your bed every night. No, they're in the other room sleeping peacefully. I want to end this by talking about something that I noticed while we were away. I was getting so many questions for moms that were lovely. And I'm happy that people seek out advice. but they were like and I talked about this on my sub stack a little bit too but they were filled with like a level of anxiety that just no it was mostly yeah there were some but it was like so what I want to say is there's so much fear of the uncomfortable especially when it comes to kids and I think gets really lovely to like just try you know and like if you want to get out of your routine and take your kids camping or on a road trip or on a family trip or go away you know as far as you're ever she's growth whatever for them it's growth for you and maybe it sucks and then you know you don't want to do that again and that's great too at least you know right my point is is like i'm so sad for the level of anxiety that everybody has around parenting in general and i don't want that to stop you from doing things that are going to give you some of the most core beautiful memories of your life with your kids for sure sharing it with us it's not gonna stop us having beautiful time with our kids yeah while we travel well i just know and and so i kind of wanted to post this this woman like wrote me an email that was really sweet and she was like we're going to Cicely to see my husband's family and I my son's gonna be this age and I can't stop thinking about the flight and I was like but what if he doesn't cry the whole time like what if he does a little bit and then he sleeps and what if it's only like I was like why are you what if he's a good day I was like I was like don't future trip like so what I want to say is like you know we our kids we ripped on this trip and we went lots of places and we're on boats and islands and things and the the top set on the jeep and we're doing and you know and that's not necessarily like we take it to the limit for sure and that's going to have to stop soon because eventually we'll be at one place and i think about but even that sorry if i interrupt dude there are people go sailing with their kids yeah i mean yes so it's like so it's like but i just don't i just want anybody there are people that go riding horses with kids at this age there is a portion of subjectivity and relativity that you have to take in consideration so whatever might result a little bit uncomfortable for most of the people might not be for us it might be cool driving around it might be cool getting a little zodiac to go on a lunch doesn't mean that you got to do the same.
1:00:42It doesn't mean you got to judge what we do or feeling free to giving parenting advice to us. Each of us is different. There are people that fly helicopter with the kids. There are people that do exceptional thing with their extraordinary activities with their kids at this age. And that's everybody's life. It's different for everyone. I wasn't going to get into the judgmental stuff, but if i'm happy to just to just say when i see when there was only a couple people that were like it's always a little line of a little a little patina but you know what i my response to that is obviously delete and block but mostly my response to that is like beside the yes but mostly my response is with a lot a lot of grace because if this is outside of of what is normal for you, that's scary.
1:01:41And so if you've never, if this is completely outside of what is normal for you, then I understand that that seems super odd. And like, that's just okay because we're all different. We have different life experiences. So like you're not, you know, if this, if whatever, I have a lot of grace. I have an amazing, wonderful group of best friends that are new friends. I I have friends that have had for 20 years. I have highly educated, beautiful, intelligent friends who have one to three children and jobs and wonderful husbands. And they go on amazing adventures with their kids and they take them camping and hiking and jumping up.
1:02:24And they're younger than my kids and they're older than my kids. And they're all giving them these like really rich lives. And I'm really proud to be amongst a group of friends who are willing to get uncomfortable with their kids and build these beautiful life moments. And I have to say, with all the traveling that we did, our kids were happy and ripping around. And we only, like, Carmela had not one meltdown. Carmela, this trip was very happy. Not one meltdown. Carlo. True, not in the car, not on a beach, not on a place. Happy, happy, happy, happy, happy, happy. I think also it's about energies.
1:02:59But that's what I mean. Like, this all, I might be a little less graceful than you are it's just I think it's cool that you're less graceful than me, you say it no, because it's I think that we all want the best for our kids we want them safe we want them growing as creatively and and it happens to everybody and fully as we can provide to them literally we do I don't want to say we do this vacation for the kids but big part of that is to give the kids these special moments they can feel love in another part of the world they can feel roots in another part of the world they can see another part of the world I like to see them get in that flow state I can't wait to have a trip with them to Asia or to major cities where we might not be in my career I can't wait potentially to have them working with us on some of our projects to have leisure trip to just go to do something leisure that we enjoy to go watch a regatta or to go watch a car race I think that we can also, we both come from a deficit it you know as the kids we didn't experience much of that so so i think that just want to share with our kids as much as we can whatever life has to offer in in a very safe and responsible way sometimes is sometimes looks a little bit more extreme than it might be sometimes it's a little uncomfortable sometimes it's comfortable at the end of the day i love the moment at night when we are on vacation like when we are at home and we are all together in a safe place and we all look each other and we love you love you love you love you good night we're not tomorrow and we go to bed and we wake up and we can feel them in the room and we can bring them in the bed with us and we can have a little coffee we can have a little our pace can be a little slower than usually is so so So I guess what I wanted to say is to, to, it's great to share joy and to give a joy back and to, to, to get inspired by others.
1:05:29And it's not too great to just negatively judge anything that is not of your business. Start to make everybody happy. When this podcast comes out on Wednesday, right now it's Sunday, you're going to be 38. 38 years old. Oh my God. Do you want to... Do I want... quickly say anything... You know, today I had a moment. About your feelings of turning 38. Today I had a moment when we were together. By the pool? By the pool. Not that my life is... Lots of things are happening in my life. And it's a very blessed, busy, rich life. But for the first time today, I didn't have, you know, every year I kind of tend to...
1:06:24Tense up? Yeah, to recap the past, the future. It gets a little intense. This year it felt very, very serene. Approaching my birthday, it feels very serene. A few days ago, I had a great conversation with this friend of mine that I love. They said to me something that I found great. and he said to me you know it's time for you to be your own hero because he said to him like you know I'm approaching my birthday and a lot of things are happening and work and home and being a father and it's true and I found that very it gave me a lot of it gave me a lot to think about as a quote but it's so true it's time to be our own hero and that's how I feel I I I now look at myself like someone I grew up thinking one day want to be.
1:07:27I grew up thinking that I always hope and wish that I could have the tools one day to shape myself into the man I'm becoming. And that is extended on being a husband to you and a father to my kids and me to the people that I have around myself. So for the first time, and it's kind of interesting that it took me 38 years to get to this conclusion, but I feel very grounded. I feel very, very... Not that there is any less headache or less hectic than last year, But I am approaching this 38th summer of mine in a very serene way. I just have to say that that is because you've done a lot of personal growth that I'm really proud of you for doing.
1:08:35Which is like hard and scary. and I think a lot of this comes from you now see what's in front of you with work especially and you like you know like you're fucking killing it with Kiaia I know that I saw in my vision the what this can be and what I can be and what this can be for other people. Yeah, and I think, listen, you built the brand yourself with no playbook, without any help, without any... I had a great reference in my life, but... Yeah, but a lot of people would have taken on a partner or brought somebody on or gotten an operator or done whatever and you... It was... slower than yeah but for the right reason no no of course so like i've learned so much from you in that way where i'm such a like do it now do it now do it now like this needs to be a big deal like yesterday you know we need to go by and like you have done things to not be that, to build something that was beautiful and had so much thought behind it and wasn't just to go viral and wasn't just to like explode and crash as fast as it exploded.
1:10:15Like you have a real vision and a real taste and you're have an undeniable, like I, and I love hearing the way people talk about you. And I love hearing our close friend, like you, it's your talent is so undeniable and you've just done everything right to have this go the distance. I'm proud of like, we've always known that we've been saying that and you've been doing the work and now it's all coming to fruition and you're approaching what is going to be the next chapter of your business. And although it's going to come with so much more pressure in so many other ways, you're gonna fucking cruise through it yeah no i i feel and you know that the thing that makes me the dark part is the dark part's over what's ahead doesn't i don't mean to sound what's ahead doesn't scares me as much as was behind i think that there is this combination of to get really of consciousness and i'm ready it's about to get really fun i kind of wanted to get to the point where i can say from now on just i'm not afraid of a flame and i want to tell you something that i've workshopped myself i've talked about this with wit and coaching stuff there is some sort of and people do this in general i see moms do this with parents parenting where they think that they're like better for suffering a little bit like i think that there's something about the suffering that makes you feel like you're doing something we talk about this i i think there is layers of depth that to reach again you know we watched odyssey last night together and i think that you know it's it's funny dramatic thing you studied the mandatory in italy so so you started middle school yeah you guys reading the odyssey in middle school so what i'm saying is that it's a great parallel of life and where we know where we're gonna get to and i work hard to get to this moment and not that is i'm not saying that from now on it would be not be harder probably harder but definitely i was i'm ready i feel ready as a as a person as a professional but i'm happy that it seems like this and every a lot of people do this but i think this moment of like oh if you have a moment if i'm sacrificing this and i'm at the store till three in the morning that means that i'm doing it that you can plan that way You can react to certain times, to certain things that happen to you with much or less intensity.
1:13:17And you're starting to like… To use a sport analogism. Is that a right word? Analogy. It's like Coach Damaro used to say, that we react to things, you know. And when the others are tired, the champions come out. so so i like to think that i train for so long for a moment where i want to champion what i do because i train so much every day every so then those 3 a.m nights you don't plan them they happen to you and how you react are you going to bed are you dropping it? Are you staying there? Are you willing to stay there at the 3am? That's not the book necessarily for everyone. I know stories of people that had a very smooth path and succeeded younger than me and made more money than I probably would ever make.
1:14:20It's just timing wise I feel things are getting at the right place at the right time. Well they are and i'm very proud of you i'm in the feeling business so it takes a little longer to shape what that looks like to make you feel something so so it takes more elements and and you know we don't make something that we don't make sometimes i invite people that makes a product that is almost a service you know like i said like today i went to buy the chlorine for the pool. I had to take the car, drive 30 minutes because it's Sunday and I spent $100 to buy some capsule for the for a moment I thought I think they gotta make chlorine for the pool.
1:15:04There are four or five brands on the shelf. That is a product that you need it. I don't have that actually. I didn't choose to do chlorine for a pool, you know what I mean? It's a way more articulate to invite you to purchase something like the one that we make. It's an articulate process. I got to engage a lot of your sense and a lot of your feelings. So I'm not justifying my slow path, but it took a minute. And the beginning seems close. My beginning seems close. Feels close. I'm really proud of you. I love you. Also, like, you've never been harder.
1:15:54just to keep it light and cute no no of course I've tried to do the same I've never been this sexually attracted to you I was at the beginning of our relationship for different reasons I was in the spectrum when we were young but I'm just obsessed with you right now I mean I'm obsessed with you all the time but like you're so in your skin you're so the attracted like you're so who you are and confident right now hot as fuck. Thank you, my wife. I feel good. Feels good. You look good. You look good. Thanks. And it's mutual what I just said. Oh my God, you think I'm hot too? The hottest. So cool.
1:16:44The hotter you've ever been since I know. When I first met you at the wild pre - pee pee like pre husband pee pee was pretty hard to have been said thank you for having me again this was thank you so much for coming on the podcast thank you for thank you for having me and um talk to you soon talk to you soon thank you for having me
1:17:14love you

Davide is back on the pod for a very special al fresco episode! We’re recapping our summer in Sicily- from Taormina / Davide's hometown to beach clubs, long lunches, late-night gelato, traveling with two kids and the places we’ll always return to. We reminisce about the restaurant where Davide asked my dad for permission to propose, his past life as a Sicilian beach boy, Italian friendship and family culture, and why traveling with our kids has become so meaningful to us.
We also get into parenting anxiety, making room for intimacy after kids, ignoring judgment, and why I refuse to let fear of something being uncomfortable stop us from making memories as a family. Plus, Davide reflects on turning 38, the personal growth that’s gotten him here, and what it means to finally feel like it’s time to “be your own hero.”
