Key claims
- Miss You, Love You is “basically a filmed play” with most scenes in one New Mexico living room and primarily two on-screen characters.
- The movie is compelling and professionally made, but not a “home run” due to mild twists and limited emotional surprises.
- Allison Janney’s performance is the standout; Andrew Runnells provides strong counterpoint.
- The hosts find it notable HBO Max bought the film at Sundance and released it rather than shelving it like other projects.
Notable examples
- Diane (Janney) is widowed and hates her New Mexico home; Jamie (Runnells) is her son’s assistant sent to handle funeral arrangements.
- Recommendation picks: The Assistant (2019) and Death Trap (1982).

3:01Newly widowed and estranged from her gay son, a woman finds herself planning her late husband's funeral with the son's assistant, Allison Janney and Andrew Runnells, star in the new Miss You, Love You on HBO Max. I'm Matt Singer. And I'm Jordan Hoffman.
3:20Matt Singer:With more movies, more series, more stuff going straight to streaming than ever before, it felt like the right time for a podcast that keeps track of it all. And that podcast is FilmSpotting, streaming video unit. This week, we've got the review of Miss You, Love You, plus this week's new to streaming titles and some deep cut streaming recommendations and a new game. A new game? A new game. And this time you're leading the game. I am the Dungeon Master this time. I'm very excited for the first time. You got so tired of beating me and Sam that now you're just taking the week off. I can't wait to see.
3:58That means one of us gets to win this week.
4:01Matt Singer:Matt, say the end of the beginning so we can start the show. It's all coming up on FilmSpotting SVU.
4:10Welcome to FilmSpotting SVU. I'm Matt Singer. later in the show. It's everyone's favorite segment to say, if not to actually listen to. Rexag! Rexag! Rexag! Rexag! Rexag!
4:26Matt Singer:Rexag! Someone, the recommendation segment is what adults call it. The recommendation segment. Adults. Please continue. Okay. Well, we'll also have listener requested recommendations. People send us an email. Yeah. Yeah. Feedback at filmspottingsvu.com. They request a personalized recommendation and we provide it. I'm excited about this one because I had a hard time. Like the person who wrote, I was like, yeah, I agree with you, buddy. I'd like to find more movies like that, too. So the one that I, it allowed me an opportunity to go big. So we'll talk about that later. And my recommendation, I saw it and I said, oh, this is going to be easy.
5:06And as I will get to, shockingly difficult for a very simple request. But we'll get to that. We will also get to our game. Jordan's first time taking command of the game segment. Before we get to all of that and our review, a very quick request. If you're listening to the show, which you must be, I'm speaking to someone right now. If you're hearing these words. It's like the golden record out there in space. you should give us a little rating a little review wherever you listen to this podcast apple podcast spotify there's other apps say please don't say you should if if they should
5:42Matt Singer:weird this is a free pot this is the least they could do for us this is by the way this is episode 10 this is number 10 is not a large number but it's 10 weeks is over you know that's two and a half months i guess i don't know how many months i don't know how many months that is two and a half months, right? The math checks out. Yes, it's two and a half months. So that's exciting. That's two and a half months. That's like the first trimester's almost over. And what you should do, if you like the show, Matt's right, go to Amazon or, well not Amazon, Apple, Apple, Spotify, whatever the hell you listen to, Bazooka.
6:16Matt Singer:Your smart refrigerator, if that's where you listen to it, wherever it is. Just put your head in the refrigerator and go, hello? Five out of five, please. No, give us a nice review It helps, you know, you know how these things work with the AI and the whatnot, the Google. You got to play the game. I don't know how it works, but I am told it does help podcasts reach new listeners, which is very important. It's only the 10th episode, so we are starting fresh here. We need to expand our listenership as much as we can. I know. And so please leave us a review. And we were looking, I was looking at our reviews recently.
6:53And most of the reviews are from the ye olden days when I hosted the show like eight years ago with the great Alison Wilmore. Pretty great. But we have had like one or two. We've had, I think, two recent reviews. One of which was five stars, which is great. Thank you to the person who gave us five stars. One was like a three-star review. Oh, my God. So I guess that's still positive. That's a six out of ten. Most of the reviews, most of the movies we've talked about on this show, I would not give a six out of ten to. So we're doing okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it said - This is like an apex. That's right.
7:27Better than apex. Better than apex. This is like a ladies first. That's right. We're the ladies first of podcasts. But this person wrote something like, this podcast is like film spotting if Adam and Josh were both 15 and there was a slow gas leak in the house. And I think I should have been insulted, but I got to say, if that was a podcast that was two 15-year-olds talking as we do about like romere films jordan recommending these obscure like documentaries about the music of germany in the 1930s whipped out a press burger and powell and press burger right if there was a podcast of that happening during a slow gas leak you could bet your ass i'd be listening week after week that sounds like a heck of a show So you can give us backwards compliments.
8:17You can give us real compliments. But we do appreciate anyone who does that. Maybe we'll do some shout-outs in the future. If you give us a nice review that doesn't insult us and compare us to children, we'll give you a little shout-out on the show. And we do appreciate it if you do that.
8:31Matt Singer:You know what? One last thing. This is actually funny because you brought her name up. I did text Allison just the other day about something because we do get emails from listeners for the Rexag and just in general. And many, many of the comments are, I used to listen back to the day and I love Allison and she's great, but I love the new show too. And I'm glad Allison is doing a new thing. So I just let her know. I said, hey, but I was texting her about something else. I said, hey, by the way, we get, we get, you know, we get notes from your old fans. They miss you and they love you and they think you're great.
9:02Matt Singer:And she's like, and I said, hey, I know you're busy, but one of these days you want to come on as a guest, right? Silence. The response, yes. After five minutes with three dots, I am happy to come on as a guest whenever, but you got to pick a worthy movie for me. You got to pick a worthy movie for me. Okay. So we'll probably be seeing her sometime around SVU number 300, 350. I think if we get to one of those, you know, at the end of the year, Netflix whips out their, you know, they do get Oscar noms for Best Picture last year. We're going to need to wait a couple of months. Train Dreams and Frankenstein of 2026, whatever those two movies are going to be.
9:42Matt Singer:It's not going to be Enola Holmes 3. It's not going to be Apex. No. But something. That's something. Okay. Well, we have that to look forward to. We'll have to find a good movie that Allison will. But she said she'd do it. She just will have to find the worthy that's movie. The movie that's worthy of her. Okay, fantastic. If someone out there sees a movie that we could review that they think would be worthy of Allison, you can also email us feedback at filmspottingsvu.com about that. And we'll relay those and we'll see how many she rejects before we get to one. All right. With all of that said, let's get to our review.
10:16Oh, my God. Yeah, we're already going so long.
10:19Matt Singer:Let's jump right in. Miss you. Love you. Let's do it. So how does this work? My son's assistant being here. It's a very unusual situation. Will you be sitting beside me at the funeral? Well, no, I couldn't. You're doing everything else for Tyler. Why can't you be my son on the day? Well, because I'm no replacement for it. You'd be surprised how low that bar is. As we've already mentioned, this is the 10th episode of the rebooted SVU. And the first time we've reviewed something on the service that Jordan affectionately refers to as home box office maximum. launched as HBO Max in the spring of 2020, then rebranded as just Max in the spring of 2023, then re-rebranded as HBO Max again in the summer of 2025.
11:08This service has had a little bit of a turbulent history and even beyond its three names in five years. At this point, HBO Max is known, I think, in my opinion, for a couple of things. It is the streaming home of some extremely popular HBO series, things like House of the Dragon and Euphoria. And it is also the service that has used permanently shelving movies as a tax deduction strategy. Not great. And maybe that is why it has taken us so long to review an HBO Max movie. When you bury a lot of the films you make in a landfill in New Mexico next to millions of E.T. Atari cartridges, metaphorically speaking, of course, you don't have a lot of product for a streaming video podcast to review.
12:03But finally, we do have an HBO Max movie to discuss. It is Miss You, Love You. It is a small drama written and directed by Jim Rash. He is an actor, a comedian, and he has previously co-wrote and co-directed several, I would say, small-scale comedies. Things like The Way Way Back and Downhill, mostly previously with his partner Nat Faxon. Now, this new movie is mostly, I would say, a two-hander, as we like to say in the biz. It stars Allison Janney and Andrew Runnels. She plays Diane, a woman whose second husband has just died, leaving her widowed in a New Mexico home that she hates. And he plays Jamie, the personal assistant of Diane's son, with her first husband.
12:52Jamie's boss, Diane's son, is overseas doing book research. He may not make it back in time for Diane's husband's funeral. So he sends Jamie in his place to help with the arrangements and to ease the burden on his grieving mom. Or maybe he just doesn't want to be there because he's estranged from his mother and the research trip is a very convenient excuse. Over 90 minutes or so in which Allison Janney and Andrew Runnels are almost always the only two people on camera. Bonnie Hunt does have a small but significant, mildly significant role as a nosy neighbor. But otherwise, this is mostly Diane and Jamie bickering, growing closer, uncovering each other's secrets and bickering some more.
13:42Now, Jordan. Yes. As this is our first HBO Max movie on the new FilmSpotting SVU, here is my question to you.
13:49Matt Singer:Sure. Yeah, go for it. what did HBO Max see and Miss You Love You that they decided to release it after acquiring it at Sundance earlier this year? Oh, it wasn't, they didn't initiate it. They bought it outright. I believe they bought it at Sundance. Wow. So why would they buy it and release it instead of tossing it into a proverbial dumpster like they have done to multiple projects over the last few years? Well, first of all, I knew they had dumped a few things. I didn't realize it was that vicious of a thing. Well, I mean, they did it to Batgirl. Batgirl and of course they made or they certainly I don't know how close to finished it was but they made an entire holiday themed sequel to that animated Scoob.
14:29So the Scooby Doo movie that went to theaters. They made a whole thing and shelved it. And they tried to get rid of Acme versus. Coyote versus Acme. They famously made it. Totally finished.
14:39Matt Singer:And Westworld is also dismissed. They have done this with some TV shows where they've kind of canceled things very spur of the moment. and then they will either take them off the service or shunt them. They will sell the rights. Yes, that kind of stuff. Well, anyhow, okay. So I didn't know that it was a purchase thing, and that does make it a little strange. Here's the thing. I'm going to give what could sound like a backhanded compliment, but I mean it as nicely as I can. If this movie had come out in 1988 on HBO, it would have won Allison Janney a Cable Ace Award. Now, the Cable Ace Award is about as useful as a hockey puck on your table to weigh down some papers.
15:20Matt Singer:But do they even have the Cable Ace Awards anymore? I don't think they do. Do they even have cable anymore? I think you need to have cable with the Cable Ace Awards. I mean, Alison Janney really is a tremendous performer. She is a very gifted woman and just marvelous. and although uh andrew reynolds is is in it as well um and you know it's it's pretty much 51 her 49 him it's her show it's the it's the give her the spotlight let her do her thing and she's phenomenal and it's a really good piece of acting the movie is and again this is going to sound like a backhanded compliment but i i like this sometimes it is basically a filmed play if this guy rash could not have found backers for this but he had to get the story off his chest he could have very easily put this up at the la jolla playhouse and had alice and janney perform it and and get great notices and andrew runnells yeah he's a theater actor it is um it you could see it on the stage it's mostly set in one living room they do they go outside once in a while but they don't have to they they could easily stick inside bonnie hunt shows up a couple other people show up, you know, those characters could be cut out or it could be if you were doing it low budget in a, in a, in a, in a theaters, a community theater somewhere, you could have one actor with different wigs playing all the other people who show up for two minutes, you know, it's fine.
16:46Matt Singer:And that's okay. I mean, I happened to some, you know, Blue Moon from last year, Rick Linklater's Blue Moon was a film to play. I mean, it was not based on a play, nor is this, This is an original piece, but I don't think the filmed play is necessarily a bad thing. There are some people, funny story. So my father is - Here we go. No, no. My father is, the Cable Ace Awards, by the way, ended in 1997. It was an acronym for Award for Cable Excellence. Thank you, Producer Sam. The Award for Cable - The Cable Ace Award was an acronym? It was an acronym. So when you're saying, it's like an ATM machine, Ace Awards, because you're saying Award for Cable Excellence.
17:25Matt Singer:my world is rocked I was today's years old when I learned my father who's a great and very interesting man if you've ever seen a television show called Curb Your Enthusiasm that star is my father your father is Larry David he worships at the altar of Richard Rogers and is obsessed with Richard Rogers so therefore has an obsession with Oscar Hammerstein and also with Lauren's heart which is what Blue Moon is about so he could not wait to see blue moon he was there opening day with a ticket he goes to the movies twice a year i gotta see the blue moon it's about lauren's heart which means richard rogers is going to be involved and he's obsessed with richard rogers and has been my whole life i called him after what did you think of blue moon it was a play i said yes stylistically it was it was very theatrical i mean he wrote plays so they it was a stylistic choice yeah but it wasn't a movie it was a play well okay yeah but But did you like it?
18:23Matt Singer:Did you find it interesting? Did the performances move you? I don't know. I went there to see a movie and I saw a play. I don't know what's going on in this country anymore. And that was it. And he just shut down. He had no, I couldn't break through to him. I still don't know what he thought about it other than it was a play. Now, be that as it may, I am not that way. Some people clearly are that way. But if you are, I mean, it's a stylistic thing. And I liked film play. If it's good, I like it. So that's the quote, by the way, the SVU t-shirt quote. If it's good, I like it. How about that? Yeah, well, that should be the official slogan of bazooka.
19:01That's right. Bazooka. If it's good, I like it. So anyhow. But let's cut to the chase, Jordan. Is this good and did you like it?
19:09Matt Singer:It is good, but it's not a home run. And it is surprising that they picked it up and put it out because it's not tearing up the summer. It's not obsession. It's not, you know, Disclosure Day or something. It's a very small thing that I do think, like I said, in 1988, when there were fewer things on the air, this movie would have gotten a lot of attention because people like Allison Janney and she's terrific. And, you know, like this thing, honestly, until last week when we were rooting around for things to watch, I had never even heard of this. Nobody's talking about it, but it's actually pretty good.
19:48Matt Singer:And I do think that we're doing a bit of a service by casting a spotlight on it because it is a moving film. It's about two people that are, you know, going through some stuff in their emotional lives. There are some twists and turns, some revelations, some, oh, I didn't see that coming. And, you know, it's just compelling and it's relatively short. You're in and out in 92 minutes. So, you know, it's not that taxing. What did you think? Would you call it a good film? I thought it was okay. I also would say that I would not call something feeling like a play automatically disqualifying like your wonderful father.
20:27I mean, in the case of Blue Moon, you could say that that was a movie about people who made plays. So perhaps the staginess of it in some ways was a reflection of their lives and a comment on their lives. In this case, one cannot make that argument because these people don't make plays.
20:42Matt Singer:No, one is a painter and one is just a guy. And she's not a painter. She's an ex-galleryist and her dead husband's a painter. Right. So you compared it to a Cable Ace Award winner of the late 80s, early 90s. The thing that it made me think about, like when I was watching this, and I did not know its origin when I watched it. Like you, I knew very little about it before I turned it on other than who was in it. That was about it. And that it was playing on HBO Max. And I turned it on and as it's progressing and I see that it's, you know, two very talented actors and it's really just them in this one place.
21:19And they're, you know, they're kind of it's really just a showcase for them. What it started to feel like to me and what I was what I was thinking about was when I, as you did for many years, would cover the Sundance Film Festival. You would you would be at the festival trying to figure out what to what should I watch today? and you would read the descriptions of these things and you'd say, oh, these are good actors. Oh, this has a promising premise. I'll check this out. And you would wait an hour in line in the bitter cold, in the snow. If you were Jordan, you would talk to Reed Hastings and not know who he was in line.
21:52Exactly. As Jordan has told us on a previous episode. That's right. And then you would see it and it would be fine. Yeah. And the audience would go wild. Sure. Like they had just seen the greatest film of their lives.

22:05Matt Singer:Right, because the stars are there, because Allison Janney shows up and does a Q &A. Allison Janney is there, and Andrew Reynolds is there, and they get huge ovations, and you're sitting there going, I mean, it was okay. Is it the altitude? What's going on here? And then the movie would come out in limited release at the Angelica Film Center in New York City and a handful of other theaters around the country, and no one would see it, and it would vanish into oblivion. And six years later, you would see it on your letterbox log, and you would go, wait, did I watch that movie? and and that is and that is kind of the the vibe i got of this film it is as you said it is not it's not it's not bad no it is it is it's a little bit professionally made no no you're you're you're you're being a little too rough you're being too rough on miss you love you it has some really nice really good writing some deep characters and janny hits it out of the park i mean she's sassy She's telling it like it is.
22:57Matt Singer:I mean, she's no, what was the great telling it like it is movie from two years ago? The Mike Lee one with Mary and Jean Baptiste. What was that called? Talk hard or hard truths. Hard truths. It's hard truths. It's no hard truths. That movie is, she's telling it like it is. This movie. Now that's a movie. That's a movie. That's a movie you remember on your letterbox when you see it five years later. This is like, if you've been yearning for a new hard truths and like, I want to see something has a little bit of that. This has got some of that, an older woman telling it like it is. I mean, I love that genre.
23:30Matt Singer:I don't know what that's called, but she tells it like it is a lot. She yells at this guy and the guy feels bad. It's great. It's terrific. I know Tyler won't check in when he gets back. That's what our relationship has become. Just large chasms of time pass with no communication and then I'll get the arbitrary text. Miss you and love you, mom. You get that one too.

Both of the performers in this movie, actors I admire, and they're both fine.
26:07They're both good. Allison Janney is better than fine. Come on, Matt Singer. She's Allison Janney. Here's what I mean.
26:12Matt Singer:Oscar winner Allison Janney. CJ Craig. Yeah, but Oscar winners make bad things too sometimes. Just because they won an Oscar. I mean, that doesn't mean they're immune to making crud. This is not crud. But this is what I would say is that if you were to say, I have a movie about a woman who's going to, a little bit of an older woman who's going to tell it like it is, who should I cast? Yeah. She's going to be like the first person you think of because she's played this character so many times. I suppose. And I don't really feel while she is very, you know, this is right in her wheelhouse. It just it didn't I didn't feel like I was seeing a new side of Alice and Jen.
26:56Matt Singer:It sounds like you're telling it like it is. I just I kept waiting for and you said there are some surprises or some twists. These are very mild twists. This is not like shock revelations that will, you know, blow you back in your seat on the couch. I don't want to spoil the one twist that kind of got. Should we give it away? I mean, let's not let's not give it away, because I have a feeling of all the things we've talked about on the show. No one. Probably this is the least seen. Absolutely. And you are telling them that it is good. And they really should go out of their way to see it. So I don't want to discourage.
27:32Matt Singer:You're probably paying for HBO Max. Anyhow, it's got like sports on there and all kinds of crap you're probably paying for. This is like something that you're not going to see anywhere else. And it's like you're going to feel like, hey, I watched something kind of good tonight that's a little different. You know, I watched, I didn't go to the theater and see a play, but I had the play come to me. So you're going to, and it's shot, you know, they do go out of the house and it's in New Mexico on location. A lot of cactuses and whatnot. It's a good, you know, some good locations. The cactus budget is through the roof.
28:00You're right about that. There's some funny stuff about it. The scrub brush budget was. There's a lot of scrub brush.
28:05Matt Singer:I was going to say there's an eagle and an owl, but they only talk about the eagle and owl. You don't actually see them come to think of it. Yeah, they couldn't afford. That was too much. They had too much scrub brush. They couldn't afford the eagle and the owl. They really didn't show any of the wildlife. They talked about wildlife a bit, but it's a big plot point, in fact. But anyway. I don't know. I wasn't that. I guess maybe I'm overvaluing the element of surprise in a film like this. But I did not really feel like this movie took me to any places that I did not really expect. It was, other than the fact that it was so small and that it had so few characters and that it really is, you know, 75 to 80 percent all in this one house and really just in this one big room.
28:47Mostly in the living room.
28:48Matt Singer:Yeah. Yeah. I mean, other than that element, there wasn't a ton about these people that the longer it went and the more she's telling it like it is, that I felt like there were like true like revelations in there. I don't know. I found it to be modestly moving and a handsome production. And I give it a little bit more of a higher grade than you do. But I'm glad to hear that you didn't hate it. No, I certainly did not hate it. And it's hard to pinpoint anything I didn't necessarily like, you know, I didn't like this. I didn't like that. It's just it's more it's just, you know, again, thinking about HBO Max and this this company.
29:30And maybe it was a leading question, but my question to you is, you know, they take these things and they flush them down the toilet so often. Like it is – yeah. And they're known for big – I guess I don't see – They're known for big stuff.
29:42Matt Singer:Like you said, House of the Dragon. There's hundreds of millions of dollars. Of course. Of course. And, you know, they have these huge TV shows. But, like, on the movie side especially, it just – it's hard to get a read on what exactly they want out of their movies. I don't think they've figured out what they want from their movies just yet. So this Jim Rash fella, I mean, like you said, the way, way back, the Force Majeure remake, Downhill, which I kind of liked, but it was a little bit unnecessary. I think his best thing was he co-wrote The Descendants, which, you know, Oscar nominated film, George Clooney and funny movie.
30:13Matt Singer:All right. So let's I think we I think we still recommend it. I'd be curious to see what our listeners think about this, because it's a little bit of a different thing. It's it's it's you know, it's it's not a masterpiece. It's not it's not too new, but it's different from what else is out there. So I still give it a recommendation. I would I would say it's a it's a mild recommendation. I guess the other thing is, while I can't I wouldn't not recommend it. It's just we live in this even with HBO Max flushing half the things they make down a toilet. We live in this age where there is just so much to watch.
30:48There are so many there are so many options available. Movies, TV shows, old and new.
30:54Matt Singer:That's part of why I like it. It's a quieter thing. It's like not, you know, last week we talked about that, you know, tabloid documentary, The Crash on Netflix with 17 million people watched in the first weekend. But like maybe like skis me out. This was a little bit, you know, Jim Rash spent some time writing this. You know, he didn't just knock it out. He really thought it through. And it's a pleasant, as I say, handsome production. Let's move on. So let me ask you, Matt Singer, before we move on to Rex Seg. Yeah. Are you ready to move on to Rex Seg? That's what I have to ask you. Your question before we move on is, are you ready to move on?
31:32That's right. Okay. Yeah. I guess I'm ready to move on. So let's just reiterate one last time. Let's reiterate. That the film we've been discussing is Miss You, Love You, and it is streaming right now on Home Box Office Maximum. That's right. This is Judith, my next door neighbor, and this is Jamie, a gift from my son. Oh. Judith so thinks we're sleeping together. If God is kind.
31:58Matt Singer:recommendations recommendation segment where is my alright now let's say for example you don't have HBO Max or you listened to our review of Miss You Love You and said you know what Hoffman's a great guy but he might have liked it but I can tell I'm not gonna like it what are some things that this movie could remind our podcasters about that they can recommend in addition to or in lieu of It's what we call a recommendation segment, also known as Waxing. Waxing. Matt, what is your recommendation pegged to Miss You, Love You? I was wondering if these hypotheticals you were throwing out, if maybe one of them was going to be, maybe you're my father and you don't like plays, films that feel like plays.
32:48Matt Singer:Did you see that picture with the girl from the West Wing? She's in a play in a movie. What's going on? I'm so confused. And I also don't know how to turn on HBO Max. What is this? You know, he, God, that it's so funny. You say that specifically because they moved and they, they had everything they needed except HBO Max. And my mother had to watch Downton Abbey or something. I think it was Downton Abbey, some big event. And so it was like, we had a call on the national guard to get the HBO Max to work in their house. It was just impossible. I don't know what it was. It wasn't their fault. It actually was somebody from Comcast had to go to their house and say, gee, you got something's wrong with this plug.
33:28Matt Singer:It's not your fault. So anyway, what is your recommendation, Matt? I'm sorry. I didn't mean to strike a nerve. That's okay. The audience wants to know. I want to know. Okay. Well, Miss You, Love You has, as we said, really only has two major characters. One of those two characters is a personal assistant. So I thought I might recommend another film about an assistant. Now, I personally never worked as the personal assistant to some very powerful person, but I did spend several years in my 20s working off and on as an intern to various powerful people. And also Gabe Friedman, right? That's right.
34:15Matt Singer:That's right. Yes, at Troma. That's not who I was referring to or where I was referring to, but I did intern at Troma for two summers in college. If you're listening out there, Gabe, it's nice to hear from you again. All right, continue. So the film that I personally think best captures what I experienced doing those non-Troma internships was a film called The Assistant from 2019. Oh. A drama starring Julia Garner, written and directed by Kitty Green. And Garner's character is an assistant to essentially a Harvey Weinstein analog, this incredibly powerful media mogul who runs a film company in New York City.
35:01And is very clearly using his position to harass women and fostering this kind of misogynistic culture, this office workplace culture. and one of the interesting choices that kitty green makes in this film is she never shows this horrible boss character he is this looming presence sense of dread yes this threat that exists and hangs over every scene even though he remains off screen just from the way people talk about him whisper about him operate in fear of him and i did not even think of this until we were talking about Miss You Love You, but there is a character somewhat like that in Miss You Love You.
35:45There is the son character who is not in the film on screen, but they are constantly talking about him and his flaws and his relationships to both of these people that we're following. So just kind of, I didn't even think about that connection, but there is another additional parallel to the film that I decided to recommend. Now, Julia Garner's character, such a low person on the totem pole in this office that, you know, she's doing, she's like restocking fridges and things like that. She, while she's there, she recognizes what is happening, what this horrible boss is doing. And she tries to report him to HR.
36:30And when she does, instead of ending the harassment instead of the boss getting punished sure of course she is the
36:38Matt Singer:one who is uh who is punished what's your plan i'm sorry where do you want to be in five to ten years oh uh i i want to produce i want to be a producer you do yeah that's okay that's excellent we could use more women producers you know that's a it's a tough job but I can see that you've got what it takes. Thanks. So why are you in here trying to throw it all away over this board? Have you seen this film? I actually did not. Okay. So obviously it's a movie about, to some extent it's about people like Harvey Weinstein. It is about sexual harassment. but beyond just that very important and relevant and horrifying aspect this film rings so true to my experiences as an intern at these places in the early 2000s where i was working at companies not trauma again we're not talking about trauma they were yes they they were cheap but they were very nice and they let me actually like learn things and do Like, I'm talking about I was working at places in lower Manhattan, like where this film is set.
37:54And I'd never worked for Harvey Weinstein. I never interned for Miramax. I never interned for the Weinstein Company. I want to make that clear. Every other one is this. They're all the same. They're all bastards. I never witnessed any sort of sexual harassment. I never witnessed, you know, the workplace culture was not as grotesque as it is in this film. But these were terrible places to work. and the movie captures how miserable, how competitive, how intense these places can be. And I have not seen a lot of other movies that like really like, I mean, watching this movie was like, like a combat shock flashback for me.
38:32It was like, it really was like, wow, this is like an, almost a documentary. The mind numbing drudgery.
38:40Matt Singer:I have to, I have to, have you ever seen a movie from the early nineties called Swimming with sharks of course of course of course this is not a how this is that's like something casablanca or something it's not that well but it's it's also it's a it's a similar thing it's about an assistant at a and of course the guy who plays the jerk is kevin spacey so he really leaned into it there yeah how did they figure that casting out i'll never know a real stretch i think swimming with sharks was a little bit more playful than the assistant not that i've seen it but that's a Yes. That's more of a comedy.
39:11It's more of a dark comedy. It's broader. Yeah. And it's like, yes. And while the boss is a monster, it's Kevin Spacey. He's on screen a lot and he has all these big. Yeah. He's being wacky. It's like Entourage. Entourage. Yes. That's probably a very good comparison. Yes. Whereas this movie is like, it's almost like a horror film, but like a elevated horror film. It's like very chilly, very cold. The air of dread hangs through every scene.
39:38Matt Singer:Yeah. it's not where i mean it's it's it's terrible i mean you know we joke around in this podcast a lot but you know we are both uh white men in the workplace and when i've had heart-to-heart conversations with women uh that have workplaces they their experience at that jobs are different than ours i mean and it's not until i hear about it's like oh shit really that's what you got out of that meeting it's like yes you didn't see how they took the classic thing you know they i said the idea first and then somebody else repeated it and and that person got congratulated you didn't hear that um kind of it's oh shit you know all these things are true so it's uh you know it's good that these i now i feel guilty that i haven't watched the movie yet because i should probably do it but uh you know you should and this is a this is a fabulous movie and like i said it really captured this world i mean it was the i don't i don't think kitty green worked for one of these places maybe she did i did not do that research to find out but if she didn't she she got it Exactly right.
40:36I mean, the horror that I still bear from just the garbage these people made me do of filling coffee machines. I cleaned kitchens.
40:47Matt Singer:You know, I had two internships and they were both fine. One was a waste of my time. One was I worked, well, I worked for a semester interned at VH1, if you can imagine such a thing. No, and most of the time. Video hits one. Video hits one. And most of the time they just had nothing. and like they had i'm gonna go be in there i'm like anything for me to do like oh no we'll think of something and i did nothing so all i did i swear to you this is true is i just drank a lot of free soda because they had like a like um like a thing you know like a like a soda fountain you just go and fill up your cup over over they have like a lot of flavors and i just like drag i just ruined my teeth just drinking a lot of soda and hanging out in the soda room and just talking to people and doing nothing and then toward the end there was one producer there that kind of like me and she actually gave me stuff to do and it was very interesting i saw how tv packages were put together but um it wasn't bad i was never i was ignored is what it was i was wasting my time wasting their time so i was i was like refilling coffee machines while you were like drinking the coffee i was doing nothing i was literally i could have done nothing they would never would have noticed that i didn't show up they didn't make you do personal errands for the bosses when this one producer took a shine to me and she would occasionally give me stuff to do then i would go to her like a puppy dog.
42:04Matt Singer:I'm like, do you need me to do anything? And she's like, no. And I did one time, I'm like, come on, you got to have something for me. And I literally did. I think I picked up her laundry, but because I asked to do it, I'm like, I think her name was Bonnie. I'm like, come on, Bonnie, I got to do something. I'm bored here. Come on. And she gave me some money to go. Well, I wasn't given the choice and I had to do those sorts of things. I returned scarves to Burberry. Yeah, that's dumb. You shouldn't be doing it. I delivered knishes to a friend of the boss who had recently been released from prison who was this for this they paid me jordan zero dollars i also not only did they pay me zero dollars they paid for a taxi to deliver the knishes but once the knishes were delivered you had to walk back i could they i could f off i could go to hell however i got back to the office was my business but they weren't paying for me a little less terrible well i was less valuable to these people than knishes well i mean was it a not a fried condition it was a baked dish right i mean come on it was probably it was a classic knish all right good good good good i mean it did look like a good knish i'm not gonna lie but was there was i allowed to eat one of the knishes never never do you touch a knish no no let me tell you let's wrap it up come on we gotta move on let's talk about the next one Okay, so this is...
43:24You're right. You haven't digressed at all, mister. I worked for VH1 drinking soda with Bonnie.
43:30Matt Singer:That's right. Bonnie was a sweetheart. I wonder what she's doing. I don't remember her last name. I can't even Google her. I don't remember her last name. Bonnie, if you're listening, get in touch. All your shout-outs on this episode. So anyway, I think this is an outstanding movie. It really captures this world. It is The Assistant. It's actually streaming in a few places. You can watch it right now on Netflix, on Hulu, or if you're willing to put up with the ads, you can also watch it on Tubi. All right. Well, you know, I'm going to go with a different side of this to the rec seg. We talked a lot about filmed plays, film plays.
44:04Matt Singer:So here is was probably the first film play that I saw. It literally is an adaptation of a play. It is the 1982 Sidney Lumet picture Death Trap, which is just the coolest thing. And I saw it. I was pretty young and hats off to my parents for showing this to me. This was actually a big deal because you get to see two men kiss in this. And my mom was ready. She had seen it already. She was ready to be mom and be like, I was very young. I'd never seen two men kiss before. And she was like, some boys like boys, some girls like girls. It's OK. Boom. Done. And like you do that when the kid's nine watching Death Trap and you set him up for life.
44:45Matt Singer:And so that was my introduction to progressive thought. Anyway, and it's not just any two guys kissing. Well, I should say - Which two? Well, you don't want to spoil it. It's a bit of a spoiler to say who the kiss is because you really don't know. All right, well, don't spoil it then. Just leave that - Because I'm assuming - Omit that detail. There might be some people who haven't seen Death Trap yet. Sure. Let me give you the premise, the opening premise of Death Trap. It's Michael Caine. He's a playwright and he was once a success and now he's bombing. He's bombing again. His last play was a bomb, the bomb before, and the new one is a bomb.
45:21Matt Singer:And he's opening night and he's drinking at Sardi's and the reviews are coming in. Jeffrey Lyons is actually, I think it's Jeffrey Lyons is on TV and saying what, saying. we're back in blue moon territory again what a stinker it is so he's kvetching to his wife and he says he also teaches and he's like you know my young student played by christopher reeve better known to us all as kal-el of krypton uh wrote a great play and it's so good and he jokes to his wife i could have him killed and steal his play and have a hit nobody would know bum bum bum and that starts the titular death trap but that's just the beginning and it's mostly set up they go upstate somewhere i don't know they're in a beautiful house very mid-century modern lots of uh you know vaunted ceilings and wood and um it's mostly in that room and the twists and the turns and it's so clever and the performances christopher reeve also i mean he was you know he He was an unknown before Superman.
46:22Matt Singer:And Superman, I mean, he's really good in that first Superman movie. Because as we know, there are a lot of superhero movies out there now that kind of are lousy. It really does live and die by how much you believe the man in the suit. If you can believe a man can fly, as they say. And he's so good in this. It was like the first thing that I'd seen him in where he was in Superman. It was just weird to see him. Sweet two. Julian sets Victor up for what will look like a murder in self-defense by getting him to act out bits of business from the play oh god that's nice Sidney I mean wow that is simple it is workable it's gonna play I'm really in your debt it's Sidney Lumet I mean come on the guy you know the guy made some of the best movies ever made Dog the Afternoon and a guy who knew how to turn a play into a film 12 angry men 12 angry men i believe the verdict also was a play it certainly feels like it could have been i'm not actually maybe no that was not a play for us but the verdict is also very good sydney lumen anyway so um the point i'm trying to make here is if you're ever interested in the filmed play death trap is my favorite one and it's really i i want to say nothing else other than michael caine christopher reeve diane cannon twists and turns surprise endings you'll never see it coming it's so good smooches but who is smooching you won't say I don't want to say because no don't say the smooch is the movie takes a twist and like there's like five twists in the movie and the first twist is is a kiss and you're like what and then it's all you don't know what's the rug gets pulled out from you time and again in this movie okay so where can people watch it oh crap I forgot about that part.
48:10Matt Singer:Well, where can people watch your sneaking movie, The Assistant? You didn't tell us. I said it. I said every place. I had three places. Bazooka. All right, hold on. There's Bazooka. There's Hoopla. You can watch the motion picture Death Trap. Unfortunately, you got to pay. It's$3 on Amazon Prime,$3 on Apple TV,$3 on Fandango at Home, formerly known as Voodoo. And that's all you got. But it's worth it. It's worth the money. Bazooka and Voodoo have just merged. They are now Bavoodoo. Okay, that's a great recommendation. That is a really wonderful film. I love Sidney Lumet, so I'm glad we're recommending Sidney Lumet films.

Should we get to our personal recommendations now? Yeah. Recommendations for listeners who've written to us at our email address, feedback at filmspottingsvu.com. They've told us what they're looking for. They've told us what streaming services they use.
51:16And it's up to us to help guide these listeners. Do you want me to reverse it?
51:25Matt Singer:I can start this one and then you can do the second one. Sure, go for it. What do you have for us this week? Let me check and see where this is actually streaming because I don't even know. Why did you offer to go first if you're not ready? I don't know. I don't know. I'm a bad person. How about I go first? We'll just cut that part out and I'll go. I got it. I got it. I got it. I got it. We got an email from a listener named Tyler. He writes, hey, Matt and Jordan and Sam. Tyler from Boston. Tyler from Boston. Not Tyler from Connecticut. What's up, Tyler? Not Tyler from Connecticut. Not Tyler from New Hampshire.
51:53Matt Singer:Tyler from Boston. he loves the show and he looks forward to the great banter, blah, blah, blah. I look forward to, so here's what he says. He loves that banter. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Is that what you're talking about, Tyler? That's the blah, blah, blah, blah. He wants a personalized rec sec. Here's what he says. I'm a huge John Carney fan and have really enjoyed once Sing Street, Begin Again, Flora and Son, and just recently Power Ballad. Me too. Me three. Yeah. Although I haven't seen Power Ballad yet. It's good. I mean, once, well, here's the thing. So he goes on, I'm looking to see if either of you had a good music movie recommendation.
52:32Matt Singer:This would be movies that aren't musicals but have a central core of music performance like School of Rock or This is Spinal Tap. And I have Netflix Prime, Hulu, Disney Plus, Peacock, Tubi, and Canopy. This guy's Mr. Moneybags over here. Streaming services out the wazoo. I want to know what Tyler does for a living that he can afford all these streaming services. uh then he says in a twist i'd like a like to recommend something to you one of my favorite movies of all time is a music film called rudderless from 2014 tyler goes on to say that it is an emotional and uplifting experience about how music can connect us well guess what tyler i've never seen rudderless i've never even heard of rudderless directed by william h macy Directed by William H.
53:19Matt Singer:Macy, and it stars Billy Crudup, Anton Yelchin, who was better known to us all as Mr. Chekhov from the new Star Trek. Rest in peace. Felicity Huffman, Selena Gomez, and Lawrence Fishburne. What an incredible cast. I gotta say, I'm down. I'm just looking at the poster, and it's, you know, Billy Crudup's a handsome man. He looks very rugged. He hasn't shaved. He hasn't shaved. He's wearing a pillow. Holding the guitar. This movie made no money. it was a bomb a box office bomb but you know what tyler liked it tyler this is what this show was all about finding these great movies that have tyler thank you thank you for a recommendation but tyler we do the recommending around here no no it's okay stay out of our lane tyler also we filmed jamie chung and kate my i don't know i never know how to pronounce her last name kate michucci is that how you pronounce her name you know who she is she's the adorable she's Kate Michucci do you know who that is Kate Michucci I know exactly who it is and I have a guess how to pronounce it but I'm just enjoying watching you suffer so keep going but I am fond of her and I find her compelling alright anyway I think it's Micucci alright so we're going to watch this movie rudderless thanks to Tyler so here's the deal you said find me another movie like once and correct.
54:41Matt Singer:I say to the heavens, I say to the spheres, find me another movie like Once. Once is a once in a lifetime movie. There's no twice. Where's twice? Even John Carney's other films that you mentioned, like Sing Street, which I love, is no Once. Wonderful film. It's not, but it's a wonderful film. Once is a sui generis, as my Latin friends say, type of movie that just, you know, I yearn for a new Once and we all do. It really doesn't exist. But what got me was when he mentioned in his note something when he was writing about rudderless, the uplifting experience about how music can connect us. So here I'm going to go big.
55:23Matt Singer:Tenth episode of SVU. It's time for Hoffman to whip out one of the big ones. It's not about fish, is it? I hadn't thought of that. You're not recommending a fish documentary, right? Maybe I should. Maybe I should slam the... No, I'm going to put jokes aside for a second and recommend one of the greatest movies ever made that has been recognized as such. However, the movie is 40 years old now or so. And there are people who are film buffs that have not seen it. For example, Matt, you and I have a friend named Rob. Rob, you know, Rob Shearer. This guy has seen more movies. He was one of my teammates when we were on Pop Culture Jeopardy and came in second.
56:04Matt Singer:That's right. That's right. Yes. He has seen - I'm not sure people know that, that you were on Pop Culture Jeopardy. Well, I like to bury the lead. They may not know that. I think that's the first time we've mentioned that. I bury the lead. Well, because I came in second. Not the most recent season. No, the real season. Not the most recent season. The one that was harder. So the point I'm making is this, Rob has seen everything, but this is one that he only saw for the first time recently. And it was like, he was embarrassing. Oh, I've never seen it. Never seen it. I'm worried it's going to be stuffy and boring.
56:29Matt Singer:And he was like, oh my God, this movie is so juicy. It's better than I thought it was. And I knew it already. It won the Oscar. It's so bitchy. It's so funny. It's so beautiful. And that movie is, come on, Matt, you know what it is. I really don't. I'm waiting on the edge of my seat here to find out. What is it, Jordan? It's about the uplifting experience of sharing music. And it is Amadeus. Oh, of course. Now, Amadeus is a masterpiece for 17 different reasons. It is truly one of the best movies. In fact, I do play around on Letterboxd, and it is in my top four, because I believe it is one of my four favorite movies.
57:06Matt Singer:And there's 10 different reasons why Amadeus rules. But one of the core reasons is, it is about music. It's not about a chef. It's not about a geologist. It's about Mozart, for God's sakes, the world's greatest composer, and about Salieri, who was not the world's greatest composer. and how he's a little bit annoyed at that. By the way, all of the movie is completely made up. Salieri and Mozart were pals. He did not murder him, blah, blah, blah. So, oh, spoilers. Okay. So anyway, the point is this. It does really highlight. The movie is not short. You know, it's not an epic, but, you know, It takes its time and takes its time to exalt in the love of music.
57:57Matt Singer:The whole impetus for the story is that F. Murray Abraham Salieri wants nothing more in life than to be a conduit from the divine power to create beautiful music. And he's good. He's a three out of five. But Mozart is Amadeus, the son of God. or son of Amadeus means, I forget the exact translation, but I think it basically means a child of heaven, a voice of God or something like that. And Sam's going to tell me in a second what the actual Latin translation of Amadeus is. But, and of course he is a complete, he's a nincompoop. He's like if Johnny Knoxville was the world's greatest composer, love of God.
58:44Matt Singer:That's what Amadeus means. but the relationship between Salieri and Mozart is there's a lot of one-upmanship and there's backstabbing and a lot of conniving it's a little bit all about Eve but there is the big scene toward the end when they are working together and it's like they're speaking another language they're speaking the language of music start with the voices bases first second beat of the first time time common time second beat of the first measure here. On A. Second measure, second beat. You see? Yes, G sharp? Of course. Second beat of the third measure, on E.
59:34Matt Singer:Do you have me? I think so. Show me. you know in the audience you kind you understand 50 of what they're talking about but you get it it's what it's you know milo's form and directed this it's one of the greatest films ever made i don't have to sell it too hard but it is about music being one of the most important things in life and uh this is my opportunity then it's not like once the relationship between mozart and Salieri is not like Glenn Hansard and in Erika so-and-so, but it's still they connect over music. And that's my recommendation. It's a great movie. It is also based on a play to bring it back to our discussions throughout this episode of films and great films based on plays.
1:00:22That is based on a play. I guess your father must hate Amadeus.
1:00:26Matt Singer:Well, no, but Milos Forman really blew it out there. They didn't. you you wouldn't know that it's based on a play i mean i have seen there was a revival in the um in uh gosh when was the revival maybe like 2003 or something in new york city and i saw it and it was pretty good david suchay better known as all as poirot he played salieri and i forget who played most are but somebody pretty cool yes and um it was fine um i saw i saw the revival also Oh, did you see David Suchet then? Maybe I did. I don't remember, but I did see the play. I'm going to see who was David. This is the audience needs to know.
1:01:04Matt Singer:David Suchet, Amadeus. They need to know. Tyler needs to know. Who was, it was, oh, it was Michael Sheen. Oh, that's a great, pretty good casting, actually. That's pretty good. I would like to see that play now that I know who Michael Sheen is. I probably saw it before I knew who Michael Sheen was. Who is this bum? He's terrible. Now you're like, wait a minute. Yep. Okay. Is it my turn for my personal recommendation? Please do. Okay. So here is mine. This week, my request comes from listener Mary. Mary writes, this may not be in your wheelhouse, but I'm looking for rom-com recommendations for Netflix, Disney Plus, Peacock, and Prime.
1:01:53And as I alluded to earlier, this shocked me because it was a surprisingly difficult recommendation to fulfill. I looked through on my Letterboxd. I was looking through my romantic comedies. Like you can filter on Letterboxd by genre and by multiple genres. So I was going through my list of my favorite romantic comedies, things I've rated highly. and none of these movies are on any of the streaming services Mary listed and she gave us four different ones that she uses maybe not as many as hotshot tyler with his like eight streaming services but four is already a lot and these are big ones these are these companies these are gigantic media companies they have no classic romantic comedies to offer to the public It's absurd.
1:02:41Now, eventually I did come across a recent film that I did like and I do feel was underseen and underrated. And so I feel comfortable recommending this because I don't know anybody who saw it, basically. Oh, I'm curious. And I've recommended to other people. And most people I talk about it with, you know, they definitely haven't seen it. But a lot of them are like, wait, that came out. That's out already. I can watch it. And you can watch it at home right now. It came out last year. All right. It is called You're Cordially Invited. This is a romantic comedy written and directed by Nicholas Stoller.
1:03:18It is streaming on Amazon Prime. So that is in the four that Mary mentioned. So she can watch it. And it pairs two of their generation's biggest comedy talents who never made a movie before. Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon. They are the couple at the center of this. He's the father of the bride of one wedding. She's the sister of the bride in another wedding, both of which are accidentally booked into the same tiny picturesque inn on the exact same day. That's a be cute.
1:03:50Matt Singer:That's a straight up be cute. Hi there. I'm checking into the bridal suite. My name is Margo Buckley. My sister is Nev Buckley, and she's getting married this weekend. Hold on. Hold on. I think there might be a little mistake because my daughter's getting married, Jenny Caldwell. It's booked. We booked the weekend. Well, now I only have Nev Buckley written down here. No, that's not possible. That's literally impossible. I'm looking at the book. Okay, well, look at the book again. I spoke to your mother, Scarlett. She booked it. In fact, bring her out. Scarlett, get out here. Scarlett, it's Jim.
1:04:22She passed last summer. Their characters reluctantly agree to share the inn and its various venues, but you're not going to believe this, Jordan. There is room at the inn is what you're saying.
1:04:34Matt Singer:Yes, go on. There is not room at the end. Well, but they make room at the end. They make room, but there's not room. But wait until you hear this. They fall in love. Well, first, what do you think happens? They bicker. You got that one right. They bicker, but then there's some sexual energy underneath that bickering. You better believe there is. And then finally, there is a burst of a dam of romance, and they smooch. There might be some smooching, perhaps. There might be some smooching. But you're saying it's very pleasant and fun to watch. That's right. And I joke about Jordan being able to identify all of the things that are going to happen in this movie because I think, you know, I think of all genres, I think there is something especially pleasurable in romantic comedies.
1:05:17I was talking in earlier about how I wanted Miss You, Love You to surprise me a little. I guess in romantic comedies, I don't really care if it surprises me. And I don't think most people care. I think there is something pleasurable about romantic comedies. You want to fall in love with. They follow the rules. You know, the meet cute and all those elements that you mentioned. Real relationships are so hard and unpredictable and, you know, just wild that I think we find something reassuring in knowing when we sit down to watch one of these movies that it's all going to work out.
1:05:49Matt Singer:Yeah, yeah. I think that is part of the appeal. For sure, for sure. And here, Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon, they make a really good pair. They are, their energies are opposite. Yeah. They look like opposites. Feral is this big, tall guy. He's a big galoot and a little older. Reese Witherspoon is this tiny. You could fold her up and put her in your pocket. She's tiny. But on the flip side, he is a total wimp. You know, his whole persona is about being ineffectual. And she is this spark plug. So it's a perfect, the dynamics are just right. A pistol, you might say. A pistol. She's a pistol, exactly.
1:06:25Matt Singer:Nicholas Stoller, of course, forgetting Sarah Marshall. Forgetting Sarah Marshall. And Neighbors, which I really liked. the Neighbors 2, which I found amusing as well. Is it Neighbors 2 Sorority Rising? Did I get the subtitle right? I don't remember, but I did enjoy the film. It was pretty good. Yeah, this guy, and a guy who knows his way around a rom-com. I mean, I think Forgetting Sarah Marshall is about as good a romantic comedy as has been made this century. And I watched, let me tell you, I watched a lot of comedy movies when I was preparing for my book, Funny Business. Oh, that's right. Yeah, Funny Business.
1:06:55Coming out in the fall, October 6th, and bookstores everywhere. Pre-order now. Well, all I want to say about that is -
1:07:01Matt Singer:What do you want to say? Well, you are cordially invited, as you said, streaming on Amazon Prime, but there's a different you are cordially invited, streaming on Paramount+. Oh, what's this one? Because you are cordially invited is also the name of an episode. It's season six, episode seven. It's the wedding episode of Worf and Jadzia Dax on Deep Space Nine. Now, spoilers if you haven't gotten that far, but Warf... Wait, don't spoil it. I might get there. Warf and Jadzia, even though he is Klingon and she is Trill, they somehow make it work, you know? Opposites attract, you know? And they fall in love and they have a wedding and Jadzia wears a marvelous red wedding dress and Warf makes all the boys on Deep Space Nine do his bachelor party, which involves deprivation and pain and all these things they have to go through.
1:08:02Matt Singer:I think the best thing could be is, imagine if someone out there has never seen an episode of Star Trek ever and they go straight to this. Because it's like the lighthearted, there's no real plot. It's just like two guys, a man in ridiculous rubber makeup and a woman with spots all over her face are getting married. And it's just like 48 minutes of just the silliness. and it's marvelous. I mean, this is why we live in a fallen world because no one now would ever discover, they would never find Star Trek through that episode. Correct. When we were kids, if you're flipping channels, you might come across a random insane episode of Star Trek where like Data is Sherlock Holmes or whatever it might be.
1:08:45And it was just a wonderful entry into that world. And it just, that is a way of consuming all media that just basically does not exist anymore.
1:08:53Matt Singer:And it is what it is. I mean, the pros of streaming. I mean, listen. Well, we love streaming. We love streaming. We love streaming. We should say that. We have no podcast about streaming. Streaming is wonderful. Streaming is wonderful. And Spotify is great, but the radio was cool, too, and buying records. And, you know, you really had to, if you were going to spend$8.99 on a record, you had to know that you liked it. And you would play it enough because you put the investment in. Now it's like you have access to everything, you know? you know speaking of streaming last night i watched miss you love you on hb on home box office maximum right and when it was done it auto fed me another film which i then even though i had work to do sat there and watched for two hours because it was pretty cool it was the quest love documentary about earth wind and fire which is i've been meaning to watch and i was like well might as well happen now hbo wants me to watch it and i i loved i mean it's not good cinema but it's it's great information about um earth wind and fire and they put out a ton of albums they did growing up i had one the greatest hits because you know you had to pay and like the point is i was up till two in the morning i was like now i have every earth wind and fire album i'm comparing their early work to when they moved labels now they were on first they were on columbia then they were on blah blah blah and um it's just a whole it's a world that the kids don't understand that Yes.
1:10:14Can I ask a question? Because you watched the movie. Yeah. Did you learn what happened on the 21st night of September? I did. There's a story for that. Would you like to tell the story? Well, maybe I'll watch it and maybe we shouldn't spoil it for people who want to find out on their own. Yeah. But I assume Love was changing the minds of pretenders.
1:10:32Matt Singer:I will tell you that what Mr. Questlove does is very clever concerning that song, which is probably their most famous song. and the origin of that date is revealed. And it's quite touching. It's quite touching. Okay. Well, now I do have to watch it because I do want to know. It's a good movie. Okay. So, well, you got an extra bonus recommendation thrown in there, but the, well, you got two bonus recommendations from Jordan. There's so much, this is power packed, this episode. It's like granola. But for Mary, who wanted a rom-com recommendation, mine was You're Cordially Invited on Amazon, or I suppose you could watch the Star Trek Deep Space Nine wedding episode, also called You're Cordially Invited, which was on Paramount +, which is not one of the streaming services that Mary subscribes to, but maybe she could get a free trial and give it a little taste.
1:11:26And if neither one sounds good, Jordan also gave a little bit of a recommendation to the Earth, Wind & Fire documentary on HBO Max by Questlove. Yeah.
1:11:34Matt Singer:Do you remember? Earth, Wind & Fire. We're making a whole different sound. No people playing no music like that. What's going on, everyone? 1:14:21Matt Singer:Ladies and gentlemen, every week on Streaming Video Unit, Film Spotting SVU, as we like to call it, we play a game. And most of the time, it's Sam, who is the Dungeon Master, and then I play Matt, and I usually win, though not always. And there have been times when Matt is a Dungeon Master, and I play Sam, and I usually win, but not always. But let's be honest, of the 10 times, I think I've won eight of them. It's unfortunately true. It's unfortunately true. So today I am going to be the Dungeon Master. And today's game is called On a Wing and a Prayer. On a Wing and a Prayer is based on the fact that our film this week, Miss You, Love You, stars Allison Janney.
1:15:06Matt Singer:And even though she's an Oscar winner and she's made a lot of great movies and shows, she will always be known as C.J. Craig from the West Wing. That's right. So what we're going to do this week is I have now seven films that I am going to give clues about. And when one of you knows what it is, you're going to buzz in, name the movie, and name the performer in the movie that is also on The West Wing. What if I didn't really watch The West Wing? All right, but I asked you if you were familiar the other day. I said you have a familiarity with The West Wing, right? You didn't ask me this. Of course I did.
1:15:43Matt Singer:It's in the Slack. It's absolutely in the Slack. I mean, I don't remember this. And if I said yes, I was in a stupor because I don't. Hold on. I mean, I have a passing familiarity with it. You said - What did I say? What did I say? Produce the receipts. Come on. Can you do a search in a Slack? Of course you can. I don't know. It's fine. It's in there. It's in there. I can confirm. Sam, do you remember that I at least asked - Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. Well, yeah. I said I watched the first season, which was 25 years ago. Oh, I see. It's the performers. You didn't mention it. Okay, so here's what's going to happen.
1:16:20I didn't respond to this. How do I know? I never even saw it.
1:16:24Matt Singer:Ugh, this is your fault. So anyway, I'm going to start naming a thing, and you're going to go, eh. Yeah. And you're going to say the name of the movie, and that's one point. And what are the clues going to be here? I'm getting to that. Okay. So I'm going to start giving clues, and you're going to go, eh, and you're going to name the movie that, and if you do that, you win one point. You then can now name the performer. Let's say, because I'm not going to, well, let's say the performer was Alice and Janney. Right. You would then say, oh, and, and that movie had Alice and Janney in it. Oh, And then you would get the second point.
1:16:56So even if I don't know the people from the West Wing, I could still get one point. If you get the movie,
1:17:01Matt Singer:you'll get one point. Okay. But if, this is where it gets tricky. Oh boy. If you steal it. Oh. And get the other point. You have to at least say who they played. You don't have to say the character name, but you have to say, oh, well, Alice of Jenny, yeah, she played the press secretary. I remember. So that's how you get the second point. If you're stealing. If you're not stealing, you just have to - You have to name who they played? Only if you're stealing, because then it's not fair. Because you're going to remember, because chances are, even if you never saw it, you're going to know who the West Wing actor was.
1:17:31Matt Singer:Trust me. I thought this through. Okay. All right. So I'm getting a pen. Now, are the clues - Is Ainsley Hayes an answer? Ainsley Hayes. I remember her. I liked her. Ainsley Hayes is not an answer. Are the clues in the form of prayers and that's why it's cold? No, I don't know why it's cold. All right, here we go. I was hoping we were going to get some Gregorian chants or something. Number one. Number one. Just say amen after your answer. This movie was produced by Lorne Michaels. Eh. Yeah, you really got it. Go for it. Wayne's World. That's right. And who's in Wayne's World? Oh. Rob Lowe. You got Wayne's World.
1:18:10Matt Singer:You got two points. I can tell you he plays the sleazy TV producer. Well, you don't have to tell me that part. That's extra credit, but you got two points right off the bat, Mr. I don't know anything about the West. Oh, man. Okay. I know a lot about Wayne's World. I can tell you that. Next one. Okay. Co-stars include Stephen Root. Co-stars include Richard Hurd. who was also on Star Trek The Next Generation, co-producer Jason Blum. Jason Blum. The film debuted at Sundance in a surprise midnight screening. What the movie? I got this. What is it, Sam? Okay, this is... Oh, shoot. I know, I'm thinking of the other...
1:19:04No, no, it's Jordan Peele. It's... it's Bradley Peel it's Whitford it's it's ridiculous I should just stop I'm I all I can think of is no it's not no how long does this get to go on before I get to now that he gave it away I get to get
1:19:20Matt Singer:you said one of the actors names oh no what's the actor you got the actor but not the name of the movie Whitford Whitford's in it what is his first name Bradley Bradley Whitford alright you got one point you have ten seconds oh god oh my god Matt what's the name of the movie Sam get out of here that you don't know the name of this movie the ultimate brain fart it's too late it's uh it is late at night and it's the end of the week but the movie is get out the movie oh my i was thinking as all his movies have one word it's a one word title no out yep no so now Bradley Whifford of course with the uh with the classic line that he would vote for a third time all All right, we're moving on to movie number three.
1:20:03Matt Singer:This is tough, actually, but you'll get it. Great. No, it was good. This is a good one. It's just funny. It's a big movie, but you kind of forget about it. Okay. Co-stars include Sally Field. Co-stars include Emma Stone. Oh, oh. Oh, oh, yeah, yeah. Go for it. The Amazing Spider-Man. Yes, very good. And Martin Sheen plays Uncle Ben. What do you know? Matt Singer knows something about Spider-Man. I know nothing about the West Wing, but I know an awful lot about Wayne's World and Spider-Man. I would say that Martin Sheen, when he leaves this earth, no obituary will mention that he was in The Amazing Spider-Man, but he was, you know?
1:20:49Matt Singer:He was indeed. The guy made a lot of good movies. As Uncle Ben's go, Martin Sheen was no Cliff Robertson. No, he was, that whole, I liked Emma Stone. And I liked Jamie Foxx, I guess, but it was rough. Okay, moving on. Now, so far, all of the performers we've mentioned were, you know, big, you know, main, main, mainstays on West Wing. People even I knew were on the West Wing. Now we're going to move into some performers that maybe didn't show up until season five. Oh. Or maybe even some performers that were only in a recurring role, but they're pretty big names. and they're pretty important to West Wing lore.
1:21:27Matt Singer:Okay. Are you a big West Wing fan, Jordan? I did not know this. I actually did not watch it until... No, no, no, no. Oh. I did not watch it until season... Whatever the last season was, season six, season seven. And then one day I was home on a Sunday or Saturday and one of the cable stations, AMC or whatever, did a from episode one binge watch and I just stayed up all night and all day and just plowed through, and then I got the DVDs and whatnot, so I caught up. That was a Sunday. It was a Sunday. Maybe it was VHS tapes back then. Who knows? Wow. I mean, yeah, West Wing is pretty good. I mean, it's ridiculous, but it's good.
1:22:06Matt Singer:Okay, here we go. Next movie. Cinematographer Sven Nykvist. Mmm. Release year 1989.
1:22:18Matt Singer:Co-stars include... Martin Landau. Eh. Go for it. It's going to be Crimes and Misdemeanors. I was going to say, it's Crimes and Misdemeanors. I was already thinking of it with 89. I was like, yeah, it's, I mean, what do you love, Susan Bergman? It's Jordan giving the clues here. But I, but. Who is from the West Wing in that film, though, Sam? I'll be honest, I don't know. It's been a long time since I've seen this movie. He did not show up until like season five or so. That's a clue. Oh, shit. All right. I gave you a clue. Oh, wait. You know what? Oh, oh, oh. Alan Alda. That's right. Alan Alda.
1:22:54Matt Singer:Hey, that's right. He was on it. That's right. He played the Republican candidate, Vinnick. Arnold Vinnick. Why is it funny? Wow. It's Alan Alda. Alda showed up in a few Woody movies in the late 80s. He was also in Manhattan Murder Mystery, which came up last week. He's in Manhattan Murder Mysteries, and I think he's in Melinda and Melinda, too, or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's Alan Alda. We love him. I met him once. I interviewed him once. It was one of my great joys was interviewing Alan Alda. Okay. Oh, listen. So Matt's up five to four. What is the score? Five, four. And how many movies do we have left?
1:23:29Matt Singer:We got a game going. We have a game here. We have one, two, three more. Okay. Okay. Ready to go. It's anybody's game. Based on a novel by Alice Hoffman. Your aunt. Not my aunt. Not my aunt. But she's a very popular novelist, Alice Hoffman. She's a best-selling novelist. Co-stars include Diane Wiest. I love Wiest. Cream of Wiest. Give me that Wiest. Co-stars include Aidan Quinn. No love for Quinn, though. Okay. Co-writer of the screenplay, Robin Suicord. Crickets, crickets. Writer of the screenplay, Akiva Goldsman. Oh, Goldsman. Okay. This is a popular movie. Solid Goldsman here. And there are people listening screaming right now at their podcasting.
1:24:28Matt Singer:We have Wiest. We have - Hoffman. Hoffman, Wiest. Akiva Goldsman. Akiva Goldsman. Oscar winner, right? For Beautiful Mind. Here we go. Here we go. Director. Yeah. Okay, here we go. This is actually not going to give it away because he's one of these guys that directs a lot of things that you don't realize it's him. Griffin Dunn. Oh. Yeah. I'm going to name the leads other than the person it is. Okay. And you're going to have to know, otherwise you truly don't know this movie. They know better than Diane Weiss, whoever they are. Yeah. Co-stars include Sandra Bullock. Co-stars include Nicole Kidman.
1:25:07Matt Singer:Oh, eh, eh, eh. Finally. What is it? Is it Practical Magic? Yes, it is. Really? And who plays the wacky ant in Practical Magic? Oh, I don't remember. Sam, you want to steal? Go for it, Sam. I dare you. It's probably like, wasn't, oh, what's her name? From Greece. Am I right? Am I right? Go, go, go, go, go, go, go. I know who it is now. Oh, no. Oh, what is her name? What is her name? Oh, Get Out. Her name is Get Out. Her name is Get Out. Stocker Channing. Yes. Oh, he did it. Wait, wait, wait. Oh, but he's got a - Who did she play on the West Wing? What was her character? Think logically. Wasn't she the wife - There you go.
1:25:48Wasn't she the wife of the president, right?
1:25:50Matt Singer:She was the first lady. First lady. Jane West Wing. That was her name. Everyone remembers her. She's a famous character. Wow, this is a scorcher. On a wing and a prayer. Six to one in favor of Matt, but there's anyone's game. Okay. We have two more. Two more. Here we go. All right, clear your minds. Edited. Uh-huh. By Michael Kahn. Okay. Yeah. All right. So you know where I'm going. We know where we're going. But do you? Music - The Friedberg and Seltzer film clearly is on the way. Music by Trevor Jones. Music by Trevor Jones. Trevor Jones of Yes and the Buggles. Could video kill the radio star?
1:26:29Okay. But what episode of Star Trek did he cast star on?
1:26:32Matt Singer:Co-star includes Julian Sands. Michael Kahn, which gives you a sense of who maybe produced this. Yeah. Trevor Jones, Julian Sands co-star includes, this ought to do it, Jeff Daniels. Julian Sands, Jeff Daniels. Come on. Let me make sure it actually is Jeff Daniels.
1:26:59Matt Singer:Yeah, it is Jeff Daniels. No, not coming yet. Okay, all right. Released summer 1990. All right, 1990. 90. I've got to guess, but that can't be written. Directed by, I said edited by Michael Kahn, and I keep leaning on that because we know that that's Spielberg's editor. Yes. Directed by Frank Marshall. Oh. I got a guess. All right. Here we go, Sam. Is it arachnophobia? Yes. Wow. It's the only thing it could be from that time period. I mean, when I heard Daniels in 90, yeah. Right. Once we knew it was the Marshall. Okay, but now we're talking about the West Wing, the West Wing connection. Yeah.
1:27:37Matt Singer:Now, all you need to do is say the actor. You don't have to say who he played on the West Wing because you got it in the first buzz. He said he. Okay. Oh, shit. All right.
1:27:49Matt Singer:Say the actor or actress. I mentioned Jeff Daniels. I mentioned Julian Sands. It was the spider. The spider was on the West Wing. He played the secretary of the treasury. Who gets all the laughs? Oh, I know. Okay. Come on, Sam. But I don't know who they played on the West Wing, so it won't really matter. I'm not going to come up with this. Matt, who is it? Who gets all the laughs and arachnophobia? It's John Goodman. Okay. Gets all the laughs. Who does he play on the West Wing? I don't know. Oh, he's on the West Wing. See, okay. He was a recurring character. I was going to say Goodman because I knew he was an arachnophobia.
1:28:25I didn't even realize he was on the West Wing. He's Bill West Wing. He's Bill West Wing.
1:28:28Matt Singer:All right. He played the Newt Gingrich-esque Speaker of the House who, thanks to a very wacky set of circumstances becomes president of the united states for one two-part episode because some shit goes down i i legitimately did not know john goodman was ever on the west i did all of these other people i knew were on the show this was that one i you know what i would never have known let me confirm good for good let me confirm what we said yeah let me confirm i saw this in you know 1996 it would be really funny if it was he played speaker of the house glenn allen walkin okay in a Very important.
1:29:02Matt Singer:He was in the best of both worlds. He did end of season four, beginning of season five. He was in the two-parter. I always loved that back in the day. He was the to-be-continued guy until next season. What is the score? Well, now you're tied because nobody got good. Wow. And this is the last question? This is the last one. Oh, my gosh. I love this. What a barn burner. Why does it always come down to the last question? It always comes down to this. Because the things are fun. Because we're both morons. No, you've been doing pretty well. I mean, come on. on a wing and a prayer last one alright here we go debuted at the Sundance Film Festival produced by David Lowery produced by David Lowery produced by that is what I said produced hell of a producer cinematography by Sean Price Williams oh I worked with him at Kim's Video I know you did and I'll just keep going the same crew edited by Robert Green music by Keegan DeWitt start getting into co-stars soon i'm gonna get i'm gonna know this get your fingers on those buzzers because you've both seen this movie yeah co-stars include jonathan price oh oh oh oh you could do it oh you could do it is it uh is it um you got it what uh what was the name of that movie one more one more co-star does the name of the movie start with the letter L?
1:30:29Matt Singer:I'm not answering that. Co-stars include Jason Schwartzman. Okay. I think I got it. Is it Listen Up, Phillip? Correct. Oh, yeah, sure. But I don't know. For Extra Glory. What's the West Wing Connection? I don't know. You don't know? I don't know. Well, who else was in the movie? I don't really remember. Who's in all of that guy's movies? Alex Ross Perry, the director. Sure, who I also worked with at Kim's, and it is a good movie, but I haven't seen it since it came out. He made three movies with this very famous actress who was not famous when she was on the West Wing. I'm sorry, Matt. I gotta steal.
1:31:06Steal it, Sam. It's Elizabeth Moss. Okay.
1:31:10Matt Singer:Alright. But who does she play on the West Wing? Who does she play on the West Wing? She's the president's daughter. Oh, it's a toy! She's a Bartlett, right? Zoe Bartlett. 17-year-old Elizabeth Moss. But dad, I don't want to do what the CIA tells me. blah, blah, blah, blah, you know. Wow. So there you go. This is a tie. I could try to very quickly come up with another one. Oh, it's a tie, right. I think we've embarrassed ourselves enough here. No, you did well. You both got eight points. You did pretty good. I will be deleting the get out. That whole thing is gone. That's not going to be part of the show.
1:31:43In fact, I've referenced it again. I have to cut this out as well. This is also out. I think you did well enough knowing these people who I had no idea were on, the West Wing, that I think you kind of redeemed yourself.
1:31:53Matt Singer:You did pretty well. Did I forget the title Get Out? But you did know the movie. You knew the movie. You just couldn't think of the title. This is a classic brain fart. This is what happens. Oh, boy. It's good. Well, I see. If you guys are happy leaving it at a tie. Yeah, let's leave it at a tie. I think it's a tie. Look, we're both winners. That was a great game, Jordan. You did a hell of a good job with that game. Good job, Jordan. On a wing and a prayer. On a wing and a prayer. And next time, we'll save this game because at some point, we will review something with a religious theme that has nothing to do with wings.
1:32:26And we can reuse the title again.
1:32:29Matt Singer:And we can get, yes. And we'll just list prayers for movies about famous religious figures. Good, I love it, I love it.
1:32:50Before we get out of here, let's run down some of the new things you can watch at home this week. First up, here are some theatrical releases that are now available to rent or buy. We have Rennie Harlan's Deep Water, about a plane that makes an emergency landing in shark-infested waters. This is not to be confused with 2022's Deep Water, which was about Ana de Armas crash landing into a marriage with Ben Affleck. I saw that movie.
1:33:17Matt Singer:I saw it too. It wasn't that bad. It wasn't good, but it wasn't that bad. as a line right Adrian line wasn't it him I think that's correct and as right but so that means the threshold to be the best movie called Deepwater of the last five years is not that high but if you add Deepwater Horizon that's a different story that's true that movie was pretty good actually I liked it I liked it a lot okay also available to rent or buy at home now Andrew Scott and Brendan Fraser in the historical drama pressure about the 72 hours before d-day did jordan have you seen i i yearn to see this and even though it's coming to streaming i may go um monday i may if i can do my schedule on the a-list yeah i might go on the a-list i have a double feature that i really must i have to see he-man and i have to see pressure i really gotta see he-man i mean i'm just it's just killing me that I haven't seen it yet.
1:34:15Matt Singer:I might go on Monday and I might be able to do both that and pressure if the timing works out. All right. You'll report back next week. Finally, we have Jude Law as Vladimir Putin. We have Paul Dano also in this film, The Wizard of the Kremlin, directed by Olivier Assayas, which I feel like should be, this should mean more than it seems to. This movie is kind of coming out very quietly. A few years ago, this would have been a bigger deal. Why is it just because it's, has it played places, festivals, and did not get a great response, Jordan? I don't know too many people who were over the moon about it.
1:34:51Matt Singer:I think I didn't see it. Okay, that must be the reason. And Olivier Assayas, however you pronounce his name, he is a prolific filmmaker. Yes. Not everything he does, he touches turns to gold. I mean, he's made some - I mean, Irma Vep in 1999 or whatever is beyond a masterpiece, but - Is that his best movie? It's probably, you know, Clouds of Sils Maria is pretty damn good. He's made some wonderful films. Yeah, yeah. But perhaps maybe this one is not one of them. Okay. Well, those are the new theatrical releases that are coming to streaming. Here are – or that are available to rent or buy, I should say.
1:35:25Now here are some theatrical releases that you can stream. They're coming to streaming. We have Andre is an idiot, a doc about a brilliant idiot who is dying because he didn't get a colonoscopy. I don't know. This is – This is a great subject for a man, me, who just scheduled a colonoscopy. So this is fantastic. Don't be scared.
1:35:45Matt Singer:I've done them, and you're in and out, and prevention is very important. If we could talk seriously for a second, there's a reason they tell everybody to get a colonoscopy, man and woman, because if you go in and they see stuff they don't like, they can take care of it early. So you've got to do it if you're listening. If you're 40 and older, you've got to do it. Don't wait around. Okay. Well, that will be available on Netflix on Tuesday, June 16th. uh by the way i'm on klonopin for three days before i go for my it's calling us i'm a mess i'm a nervous wreck my wife is telling me to calm down you go in the prep is kind of funny because you're just shitting non-stop it's like the bellagio hotel coming out of your ass it's it's out of control but uh you get in and you're out and the doctor says we we yanked this we yanked that and it's okay and i'll see you in five years you got to do it okay fantastic thank you for that therapy session yeah on uh the bellagio i'm never thank god i already went to las vegas because if i had to go now and look at the bellagio fountain i'd have a real problem okay on thursday june 18th one of the biggest movies of the year is coming to mgm plus formerly epics uh this is not the same as amazon prime video even though it is owned by amazon this is project hail mary one of the huge hits of the year ryan gosling he's an astronaut he has to well he's not really an astronaut but he is in space.
1:37:03He's a reluctant astronaut. He's in space. He's got to save the whole world with the help of a rock. It's so good.
1:37:09Matt Singer:And you're telling me it's only on MGM Plus? At least for now, it is only on MGM Plus, formerly Epics. That's what they call chutzpah a little bit. That's chutzpah to make you sign up for MGM Plus. Sign up for MGM Plus. That's right. And finally, Glenn Powell and Margaret Qualley in How to Make a Killing. This was an A24 release from earlier in the year. It will be streaming on HBO Max on Friday, June 19th. Did you see that one, Jordan? No, but... I saw it on a plane, on a plane to Vegas where I saw the Bellagio Fountains where they were streaming water, thankfully. I got enough of Glenn Powell.
1:37:44Matt Singer:I need five minutes away from him. He's in too many movies, although Margot Qualley I have time for. Now let's talk about direct-to-streaming voicemails for Isabel. A young woman's confessional voicemails to her late sister are unknowingly redirected to a stranger who begins to fall in love from afar. And this stars Zooey Deutsch and Nick Robinson, and it launches on Netflix Friday the 19th. This sounds like a potential for Friday, June 19th. Sounds like a nice rom, it doesn't sound like a com, it sounds like a rom-drom, a rom-romantic drama. Yeah. Then, Your Fault, colon London. Yeah. Is this about earthquakes?
1:38:32Matt Singer:No, Your Fault London. The follow-up to last year's massively popular streaming hit, My Fault London, on Amazon Prime. It's so popular, in fact, that Amazon greenlit a whole trilogy. Your Fault London is the second in the series. Have you heard of this? This whole thing eluded us. We were hearing a little about this from Sam earlier where he was explaining, oh, Your Fault London is coming out. The sequel to My Fault London. I was absolutely lost. So I have not, there was no SVU last year. So I missed some of these things. Now I'm hip to them. So the question is, if a movie was streaming, was a streaming hit, but there was no SVU to review it, did it really exist?
1:39:11Matt Singer:I guess the answer is yes. To me, no, to me it did not. All right. So that's on Prime Wednesday, June 17th. Also, never a change. In 2008, the graduating class of North Meadows High School had their senior year cut short due to a disastrous tornado. now in their mid-30s they're being forced to return home and finish high school once and for all well that's a cute premise and it's on hulu uh june 17th and there's a lot of great comedic actors in that one that sounds like um do you remember that premise uh mr 3000 that's kind of sounds like mr 3000 you see that that was a great bernie mack the great bernie mack who i respect and love and he thought he had 3000 hits but he didn't there was one was an error he had to go back to baseball and do a good comedy anyway so this is not mr 3000 though this is some some cockamamie high school movie that's right all right what else we got that's about it but we got to figure out what we're gonna watch last week we could watch some of those movies you just mentioned i want to let's watch mr 3000 with perney mack that's a funny movie well the one that wasn't on there that i know we've talked about so we can we can throw it out there and at least we're mentioning it either way, was we have discussed, I really want to see this Brian Eno documentary on the Criterion channel, where the whole thing with it is every month they're going to have a new version of the film.
1:40:40Right.
1:40:40Matt Singer:This sounds crazy, but Brian Eno, the very famous music composer and - Producer. Futurist producer. or he produced everything on the U2 and Peter, not Peter Gabriel, but other people.
1:40:56Matt Singer:And they shot 30 hours of footage, as they always do for these documentaries, and they cut it into little packages, and then they use generative AI. Well, it says it's using custom non-AI software. That's what it says in the press release. That's a lot of BS. They're using AI. They're using Claude. Claude is in the room figuring out. when you went to go see this in the theaters which granted this was not exactly in this was in New York City they showed it at the Film Forum which is a snooty pants place downtown I love it and if you went to the 5 o 'clock show you saw movie X if you went to the 7 o 'clock show you saw movie Y there were different scenes I think the spine of it was the same but you know beginning middle and end but in between there were different scenes that you wouldn't get if you it just was random It says that there are 52 quintillion or 52 billion billion possible permutations of this movie.
1:41:54This to me is a little bit annoying, frankly. You're not feeling it.
1:41:57Matt Singer:No. I feel like make a movie. Don't leave it up to chance. And it's fine. So I like Brian. You know, I'm fond of his work. You're friends with him. Never met him. And your aunt, Alice Hoffman. You guys all hang out. Back in the day of buying CDs, I bought a few. And Discreet Music is a really good one. Music for Airports is a really good one. The Talking Heads, he's the reason. David Byrne is the real genius of Talking Heads, and Brian Eno is the second genius. Anyway, the point I'm making is this documentary is annoying because there's 52 squintillion versions. Okay, so that one's out. No, I'm not saying it's out.
1:42:34Well, we have Never Change. We have Your Fault, London. Maybe we should get in onto these faults. Maybe we need to learn about the faults. We could watch the original. We could watch the sequel.
1:42:43Matt Singer:Well, that's the thing. It would be a little bit of an investment. But are they really good? Your fault, London? I mean, the kids like it. Is that what it is? We're cool. We're hip. What kind of movie is it? I guess we're just not going to decide at this moment. Once again. Oh, it looks romantic. There's kissing. Smooching? Who is she? Asha Banks and Matthew Broom. They're in love. Oh, she looks pleasant. The young lass. As we did last week, I think we're going to leave things on a cliffhanger. Right, right, right. It's going to be one of these options we've thrown out, and we'll figure it out, and we'll let you know.
1:43:19Actually, the best way to find out is when we figure out what we're reviewing, we put it on social media. We put it on our Facebook page, facebook.com slash FilmspottingSU. That's how I like to look at it. For Philips Body Guest for you, I'm Matt Singer. And I'm Jordan Hoffman. It was a long episode, but a good one. We'll see you next week, and so long.

Matt and Jordan review HBO’s Sundance acquisition Miss You Love You. And while Jordan finds it to be a handsome, moving, and well-acted "filmed play", Matt finds too modest and predictable.
For Rec Seg, Matt revisits the grueling, ice-cold dread of corporate culture with a 2019 workplace thriller, while Jordan counters with a classic 1982 Sidney Lumet thriller packed with more twists, turns -- and smooches!
Finally, Jordan takes the reins as Dungeon Master for a game called On a Wing and a Prayer.
