In short
FilmSpotting SVU reviews the Netflix comedy Little Brother and discusses streaming picks and recommendations.
Guests / hosts
The episode is hosted by Jordan Hoffman and Matt Singer (no guest interviewees). The “guests” discussed in the review are the film’s actors: Eric Andre (Marcus Pinchel), John Cena (Rudd Landy), Christopher Maloney (Rudd’s brother, Josh Landy), Michelle Monaghan (Rudd’s wife), and Sherry Cola (work wife).
Guest backgrounds (in-episode context)
Andre is praised for extreme physical/sexual-comedy commitment (nudity, stunts, “parabolas of urine”). Cena is framed as a “straight guy” realtor with a tightly wound persona. Maloney is cast as the rich, douchebag snot brother.
Key claims
Jordan calls Little Brother “crude” and “morally repugnant” but says it’s soothing dumb-guy comedy; he’s mixed on rewatch value. Matt finds it “fine,” low-effort, and not dynamic/memorable enough despite Andre’s effort; he rates it around 2.5/5.
Notable examples
Andre breaks out of an asylum via an air duct; repeated falls down stairs; lewd intimacy scene (not described); reality-show subplot about “NYC hustlers”/realtors; recurring foster-family “recipe” gag. Recommendations: Sing Street (Starz) and The In-Laws (1979) (free on Tubi/Hoopla).

2:32Matt Singer:John Cena is an uptight realtor whose perfect life has gone sideways when his title of movie, Little Brother, shows up. And he's played by Eric Andre. It's new on Netflix. And I'm Jordan Hoffman. And I'm Matt Singer. With more movies, more series, more stuff. Going straight to streaming than ever before. It felt like the right time for a podcast that keeps track of it all, and that podcast is FilmSpotting, streaming video unit. This week, we've got a review of Little Brother, plus this week's new-to-streaming titles, some deep-cut streaming recommendations, and a game. Yeah. Woo! It's all coming up on FilmSpotting SVU.
3:26Welcome back to FilmSpotting SVU, everyone. I'm Matt Singer. Later in the show, we've got our streaming recommendations, known to some, maybe not to Jordan, as Rexack. We're starting to get listeners, because I didn't do it, because Jordan doesn't like it. Let's just get it all out. Let's air the dirty laundry. Air the grievances. Jordan doesn't like it.
3:48Matt Singer:Doesn't like when I yell. I love it. It started, actually, I don't care if you yell or not, because I yell it was I'll be I'm gonna out her it was my wife who loves you you know this passing the buck blaming the wife you you know my wife very well but she's like she never she very rarely I've been a professional writer for 20 years she doesn't really read my stuff she doesn't really listen to my podcast but she listens to this one because she likes you so there you go and then and she also refers to you and I've told you this before she your name is not Matt singer her name is super pulse because that's your the handle you picked for like your aol aim in in when you were in middle school this is true so what she says is like oh your podcast with super pulse is funny but i don't know why super pulse yells all the time what is he yelling and i'm like he's yelling recommendation segment rex egg and she's like i don't know why he has to yell and then she listens to another one she's like oh the podcast was funny but like i don't super pulse was yelling again i'm like i'll tell him not to yell i'll tell him not to yell so he You told me not to yell, but now we're getting feedback from listeners.
4:51Yeah, we did. Why did you stop yelling? We missed it. Bring it back.
4:54Matt Singer:I read those emails to my life. So maybe we'll bring it back, but we'll make it less yelly. And we'll make it clear. What we're screaming is rec seg. It's the recommendation segment. It's the rec seg. That's it. I think what it was is that she never listened to episode one. She started on episode four and so didn't get the origin story. Yeah, we're going to make it very clear. The lore. We need a wiki. The deep lore. All good pop culture has lore, so it's good that we have some now, too. Yeah. Yes. Okay. So, Matt, what are you saying this week's, are we done? Is it time to introduce segment one?
5:29Matt Singer:Is that what's happening now? Sure. Why not? Let's get to it. Yeah. We're going to get to, we got lots to do, so let's get right in. First up, what are we talking about this week? Little brother. I don't believe it, but I think that's my little brother from a charity thing in high school. Yeah, I barely remember. Brother? Is that you? he obviously doesn't have anywhere else to go maybe you can stay with us for a night or two now i'll tell you something little brother is available for those of you to watch on the streaming service netflix the biggest of all streaming services the big red machine the big red one it's the coca-cola of streaming and the new ish movie it's about maybe a week old is called little brother eric andre plays the crude tasmanian devil whose cyclone spin of disgusting antics is aimed directly at a tightly wound john cena in the new netflix comedy little brother this is a crude oh i use the word crude twice this is a lewd idiotic immature vile and morally repugnant 91 minutes of cinema so naturally i recommend it with tremendous gusto So the story, such that it is, concerns Andre's character, Marcus Pinchel, a classic What About Bob-esque nutcase who breaks out of the mental asylum where he voluntarily lives so he doesn't actually have to break out.
6:52Matt Singer:But he goes to New York City to visit his, quote, big brother, Rud Landy. What a name. What a real name. The realest name that there has ever been in a movie. Rud. Rud. What about Reef Hawk? And Rudd Landy, go boating. We are collecting like the Avengers of dumbass movie character names on this podcast. Rudd Landy is played by John Cena, who we later learned briefly volunteered years ago as a YMCA mentor so it would look good on his college applications. Cena's Rudd Landy is built like a wrestler, but he's actually just a real estate agent. He's also got a big brother of his own, a douchebag, rich, and famous snot played by Christopher Maloney.
7:36Matt Singer:as such even though cena can pretend to be suave in reality he's a cringing dork on the inside still he's got the love of a good wife and michelle monahan and also a work wife in sherry cola he's on the cusp of a big break a hit realtors reality show which i think is called like nyc hustlers nyc hustlers but before you can say i see where this is going andre ends up busting on to set to create many hijinks in this film you will see parabolas of urine people falling off balconies smashing down staircases multiple times having sex in cars having sex on top of cars and a close-up of a catheter extraction i will never forget there is also a significant portion of the film dedicated to a specifically lewd act of intimacy that i will abstain from discussing any further thank you suffice to say that when michelle monahan later asks for quote the mintiest drink you have i did in fact let out a great chuckle chuckle nay guffaw i watched little brother at the end of a very very busy day and as sometimes happens something of an emotionally taxing day the stupidity on display was like sinking into a warm bath dumb guy comedy like this soothes me what can i say and eric andre is one of the best cena is top notch too as the befuddled straight guy but what's best is that andre's marcus pinchell is gross and stupid and not particularly physically fit he's naked a lot in this but yet he's also a ladies magnet it because that's absolutely hilarious the only thing i did not like about little brother is that it eventually ended i can say with certainty i can say with certainty that i look forward to watching this piece of junk again someday something i cannot say about recent oscar winners like moonlight coda green book and nomadland proving once again that our priorities as a society are completely screwed up.
9:56Matt Singer:Matt Singer, what do you think about the new motion picture Little Brother on Netflix? I don't know what to say at this point. I really don't. You just said you wish the movie never ended. What was the list of Oscar winners that you said it's better than? What was the list? Run it down. I briefly lost touch with reality as soon as you started listing them. I was just looking at the recent Oscar. winners for Best Picture. And I saw Moonlight, Coda, Green Book, and Nomadland. Movies I've all seen once and movies that I all thought were good. But I can guarantee you there is no way in hell I will ever watch those movies a second time.
10:38You would never watch Moonlight again? I've seen it like three times already. It's just like, no, I got it.
10:45Matt Singer:It was fine. I got it. I got it, but I didn't get all the nuances in Little Brother. I'm going to have to go back in for a second. It was good, but I mean, there are some things that you're going to watch once and be like, yeah, got it. But then you're going to see Eric Andre falling down the stairs with a neck brace on, collapsing into things, smashing into things. John Cena opens the door to the guest room. There's all kinds of, there's that big naked dude named Mustafa or something. They're having a threesome in there. There's a menage going. It's very funny. There's a lot of Eric Andre nudity in this.
11:17Matt Singer:He's great. He's a great. I appreciate his commitment to the bit. I have to, though, throw a little bit of cold water on here. And I have to say, while we have been pretty much in lockstep for a lot of these movies, this one, I don't know. This one, maybe I just didn't have as bad a day as you did when you watched it. Maybe I was in a bad mood when I watched it. I thought it was okay. And there are some funny moments. You mentioned a lot of the best ones. But I did not think this was a particularly dynamic or memorable or even a movie that I would want to rewatch too many times. I thought it was fine.
12:04I thought it was, you know, like barely acceptable for the amount of laughs per the 90 minutes. And it just felt a little more low effort to me. despite the fact that Eric Andre is trying very hard.
12:22Matt Singer:He's doing a marathon in every scene. He's running around like a maniac. He's jumping up and down. He's falling down stairs. But it does feel like it was determined that that is the engine that is going to drive this movie and the comedy. And as long as we have him, as you said, spraying parabolas of urine and doing things like that, falling down the stairs, we really don't need to do too much else. and I did not feel there was much, much to this one beyond his admittedly very impressive commitment. I do like Eric Andre and, uh, yeah, I, I, I enjoyed seeing him, but I, I don't know if I can even give this like a, a overall recommendation.
13:04I'm like right on the line for me, like on the, on the letterboxd, uh, rating scale, the five star, I'm like two and a half. I like, I'm just kind of not, it's because, and I'll tell you why. I just, again, like, yes, Eric Andre is very funny, but I almost feel like he's too funny in the movie at times because, you know, the whole dynamic is supposed to be that he's, as you said, it's a very what about Bob kind of, you know, the crazy person enters the life of the stuffy guy and wackiness ensues. And where your allegiances lie in this scenario is very important. and I just thought, yes, okay, he is a klutz.
13:46He is outlandish and brash and he's very free with his sexuality and his nudity and his parabolas of urine and all those sorts of things. Yeah. But like, you know, Rudd is Rudd Landy. Rudd.
14:03Matt Singer:His first name is Rudd. John Cena's Rudd Landy. It's like Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. John Cena's Rudd Landy. he is such a stick in the mud and he is such a sourpuss he is and it's not a great use of john cena i don't think another guy that i generally find quite enjoyable there because it's funny to see because he's built like a block of concrete and he's like a he's like a neurotic nerd so that's kind of funny i guess i felt like first of all he has done this movie before in the opposite role. There's this comedy, I believe, a movie that we could have covered on this show if we were around last year called Ricky Stenicki.
14:46I heard
14:47Matt Singer:of that, but I didn't see it. It is essentially this premise with John Cena in the Eric Andre role playing the psychotic maniac, the unfettered, unencumbered man of insanity. And he is so much better in that movie, in that role. He is I mean, he is just as committed and weird and funny as Eric Andre is in this one. And I just think he works better in that position as the stick in the mud. I mean, granted, he's not asked to do a lot, but I just maybe it's the writing. Maybe it's him. But I just I was just like, lighten up, Rudd. Like, there's not enough happening that makes you at least think occasionally that Rudd has a point or that Eric Andre is a bad guy.
15:32Matt Singer:It is kind of funny because everybody seems to really love Eric Andre very quickly except for Rudd. Yes. And it's like Rudd get, but you know, if you really want to. Which is again, that's the classic scenario of this kind of premise is that everybody loves him, but the main character doesn't. But the main character has to see things that nobody else sees that are annoying. Like nobody really, like he just, he just doesn't like him. And it's. Well, he does destroy his car. Okay. It's a car. As he even says later in the film, it's just a car. Yeah. I don't know. You're right in that everything wacky Eric Andre does is sort of out in the open and everybody else seems to like it.
16:13Right.
16:13Matt Singer:But I mean, I suppose you could say that the writing, the screenplay here is perhaps was a little bit on autopilot. A little bit. It was just like, you know, let's just let these two maniacs go to town. There are funny moments. Yeah. You mentioned, you know, the scene with the sexual act. we will not mention and I will not mention it either because I know that my parents sometimes listen to this podcast there's no way in hell I'm gonna talk about it but that scene and all the lead-up to that scene very very funny and the punchline that you mentioned very funny I also liked you know there's a I did laugh at you know the opening of the movie where he you know kind of you know cuckoo's nest breaks out of this yeah of this mental hospital and at one point by going through an air duct and breaking through the air duct and he falls down out of the air duct and he's back in his room which is a very you know there's there's some there is some funny stuff and i did also like christopher maloney yeah um as a douchebag as as rud landy's brother who has a much more normal name of josh josh i was gonna say joel josh landy yeah nobody mentions this but i feel like you know obviously a lot of the movie has to do with the sibling rivalry yeah that's feels with Josh.
17:27And they don't mention this, but I had to be, I was like, is the source of all the angst that his brother's name is Josh and his name is Rudd? Because let me tell you something. If my brother's name was Josh and my name was Rudd, I would hate my brother so much. Yeah. I would be the source of all the problems. And if that name sounds familiar to you, it should. Rudd is the kid brother of billionaire air hedge fund manager and man about town josh lindy dj philanthropist money mogul he does it all
17:58Matt Singer:in other words rudd has a chip on his shoulder the size of the big apple

20:07There's a reason. They say Snap Judgment changed the sound of storytelling. The stories, the music, the voice in the dark heard on NPR stations across the country. Time called it one of the best 100 podcasts ever. The kind of stories you can't wait to tell somebody. Snap Judgment from KQED. New episodes drop every Thursday wherever you get your podcasts.
20:36Matt Singer:the other funny thing about the opening montage is like you know he's driving cross country to go see uh rud and he wants to go take a shower so he gets naked and runs on a golf course while they're sprinkling it in the morning so he's like and you know in a very you know just shoving his butt in a sprinkler and that's like minute two so you know that's a pretty good example if you find the image of eric andre with his butt cheeks open with a golf course sprinkler going up his That's funny. They're not that far open. It's not like he's. No, no, no. I mean, the camera is it's all in the mind, but it's a theater of the mind.
21:12It's a. I don't know.
21:14Matt Singer:I will say. Yeah. I mean, all these things are like when you watch it. So, like, you know, you've I happen to be like it was the end of the day. It was we're in the middle of a terrible heat wave in the New York City area right now. And I had finished a long day of work and I actually went to the local public library because I sometimes find that I get my work done faster there because I can't F around. because there are other people there. So I did it, and then I was like, okay, and now I have time to watch this movie. And because you're at a library and you can't laugh, I was just chortling nonstop.
21:45Matt Singer:You watched this movie in the library? With headphones on, but yes. You watched Eric Andre spread his butt cheeks in the library? I did. That's what our tax dollars pay for, is the right for me to watch this at the library. You watched Michelle Monaghan do a thing that we're not going to discuss to John Cena? in the public library? That's right. And there happened to be a nice, kindly, old, bitty librarian walking behind me during that scene, and she fell down, the books went everywhere. It was terrible. Oh, my word. Yeah, exactly. Well, this is incredible. Honestly, I think it would be more funny to watch you watch the movie at the library than it would be to see this movie.
22:30I do want to mention one other part that I really felt was, and again, even though I did laugh sometimes through the movie intermittently, all the stuff with the reality show felt to me like the writers of this film had a whole other idea for a movie or a TV show that they had not used. They had like it was like sitting on a shelf and they were like, we need one more thing in this movie. We don't have enough drama because our reality, our little brother, crazy character is too likable and there's not enough going on here. What can we put in? And they're like, well, what if Rud Landy is auditioning to be a part of a kind of like a Bravo NYC hustlers, fake reality, reality show?
23:16and and I don't know I thought all of this material was very surface very superficial very like yes we get it like reality shows are not real yeah and it just felt like a lot of screen time for a subplot that was not really connected thematically to anything going on here and didn't really have a lot of laugh payoff if that makes sense that was not my favorite element
23:44Matt Singer:of the film but it did sort of serve as an excuse to get them in situations like oh and now they're going to go to the brother's house and now there's going to be a big event where somebody gets an award i mean there was it it had served its function on a screenplay beat writing thing but you're right it was a little bit hack and um there weren't any particularly great insights into reality tv in this it was very you don't know from existing in the world or yeah but there one other element that's very funny is a recurring gag where you know eric andre he was an orphan and he had all these different foster families and like every every couple of scenes they mention as well my first my fifth foster mother did and he has all these skills that he's accrued over the years and there's a couple of there's like one run or throwaway line that it's just the way he delivers it it's so he's he's cooking something and the family's like wow this is really delicious like yeah it's a recipe i got from my fourth foster father um and it's the it really brings me back to him because i tragically lost him on 9-11 in an unrelated circus fire it's like this is a stupid thing to say that the way he delivers it is just like this guy's the king so i don't know like like i say uh it is a dumb movie it's probably better if you watch it in an environment when you're not allowed to laugh like at a library you're gonna laugh more um it's on netflix you pay for it already it's only 90 minutes i thought it was funny um it's certainly it's certainly lewd though like it's like i mean there's well there is a lot of nudity there's a lot of his nudity but it's like i don't know is this nc-17 it's pretty no this is a this is an r there's not i mean there's not enough actual you know yeah they transgressive sexual nudity i think to be it's it's um the the the window for r has expanded but i don't know i think they probably have um content blockers at the public library for anything nc-17 they won't let you watch that so the fact that you were able to watch it while the old ladies watched you that's right i was trying to watch lust caution the other day and i couldn't do it exactly exactly what are the other NC-17 movies.
Read the full transcript
25:58Matt Singer:Oh boy, here's a rabbit hole. I'm going down. See, some of these are like, I don't consider that. Oh, that's 1974. Oh, I did see that. Young Adam. You know, we can't see, and the audience, this is a podcast, there's no visual. They cannot see the titles you're looking at and saying, oh yeah, I saw that one. I just wanted to see if I wanted to punch in a different joke than Lust Caution. Because that's like an area, it's dirty, but it's an erudite film. I think it's a solid joke. We'll leave it in. Hey, did you know that the first Evil Dead is NC-17? It was originally, it never had a rating. Well, the NC-17 didn't exist at the time.
26:39Matt Singer:So when they rated it in 1994, they gave it an NC-17 according to Wikipedia. I would have assumed it was unrated. Yeah. Well, I guess they probably re-released it at some point or maybe the VHSs or whatever. But anyway, that's the news. So let's wrap it up here. Little Brother is a masterpiece, and it's up there with all the greats like Nomadland and Moonlight. No, you didn't say it was up there. You said it was superior to. Well, I mean, maybe I overstated it a little bit. Maybe I was being a little wacky for energetic effect, similar to the Eric Andre character Little Brother. Maybe I was the Tasmanian devil in this podcast.
27:19Right. So I guess that makes me the incredibly handsome and very well muscled John Cena, who's a real stick in the mud. I'll take it. There are some funny shots of him working out.
27:31Matt Singer:He's like, I got to sweat it out. And then he goes in his gym and he's lifting weights. And I'm like, holy shit, that guy probably really does that, what, two hours a day. Even when he's making a comedy, he has to work out or else he'll lose that physique, right? Yeah. Yeah. Well, he's he's shockingly, that's him slimmed down from his his wrestling heyday. But, yes, I'm sure there is a lot of lifting of heavy things in his life. Yeah. What a what a world. What a man. Maybe I maybe I should do that. All right. So thanks to all. Thanks to that. And now thanks to that movie. The movie, one more time, is Little Brother.
28:07Matt Singer:directed by a fellow by the name of Matt Spicer whose previous work includes the um uh Aubrey Plaza film Ingrid Goes West that I also enjoyed that was I think a superior film he directed some episodes of Angeline or Angeline which I didn't watch I think that was a Hulu series about the woman who has the the big billboards in LA uh and he also directed some episodes of American horror stories so he's out there in the mix the guys who wrote this idiotic screenplay uh two fellows by the name of jared paul and andrew mogul whose previous works include the d train which was a sundance film with jack black i remember that one and also yes man with the great jim carrey so so those two guys wrote that now they're um they're doing this and you know what um maybe maybe they should stick with this maybe the three of them should get together with eric andre again and try something new we should cut there's a guy pissing all over the car out there and he shattered the window and a car drove by and ripped the door off don't mind me i'm rudd's little brother oh matt singer we just reviewed little brother which you were pretty mixed on but i know inside of you you liked elements of it you liked the dumb parts yes and I'm wondering the smart dumb parts right I would imagine that there's a film out there already existing that you could recommend in this our recommendation segment commonly known as and what you might want to do right now is tell the listeners what you recommend that is pegged to Little Brother yes although I am going to switch it up I'm not going to recommend a wacky comedy I will say that had I not already recommended it on our second episode so people can go back into the archives and listen to Film Spotting SVU number two, they can hear me recommend Eric Andre's Bad Trip, a movie I greatly, greatly enjoy and would certainly recommend and say if you haven't seen that, I would strongly suggest because they're both on Netflix.
30:21I would make sure I've seen Bad Trip before I waste my time on Little Brother. It is hilarious. It is streaming on Netflix. So I've already recommended that, though. And so I'm going to go in a totally different direction. Do it. Well, the main title relationship is not about a biological brotherhood, although there are biological brothers in the film with John Cena and Christopher Maloney. so it did get me thinking about the fact that movies about brothers is not really a a world with a lot of great classic films and it is such a fundamental relationship for so many people including myself i have a brother i love my that's right um but it's not something that you see in a lot of great movies i really actually when i said you know said to myself like what is a great movie about brothers it took a little bit before i thought of one that i went oh i really love this movie and it does have a really good brother relationship i'm curious to know what it is well i'm about to tell you it is godfather part two when he shoots his brother in the canoe yes now that is that's when i think of my brother and me that's what i think of i knew it was you doug um no the movie i'm going to recommend from 2016 is the film Sing Street, which is streaming on Starz.
31:46And this is not...
31:47Matt Singer:Wait, I gotta interrupt. I gotta interrupt. You always do. We have a little chat, and Sam called it before you said it. He did. He knew. He's good. He knows you so well, and he said it's gonna be Sing Street, and it is Sing Street. That's because he knows that even though this is not necessarily like, if you summed it up in one little sentence, you wouldn't say it's a movie about brothers. Ultimately, it's a movie about this Irish kid Connor, who's living in 1980s Dublin, played by Ferdia Walsh-Pilo, who's he's he starts a band. He wants to impress a girl and he starts a band, starts making music videos.
32:22It all is very kind of awkward at first, but suddenly you discover that he and his buddies are actually pretty good and they have some very catchy songs by the end of the film. That's what it's about. But one of the grace notes in this story is is his relationship with his older brother, Brendan, who's played by the actor Jack Rayner, who, you know, he kind of plays the role of mentor in the film. He's kind of teaching Connor about about women, about rock and roll. You want to have actual sexual intercourse, right? Yeah. Well, what? The girl. It's all about the girl, isn't it? Yeah, the girl, yeah.
33:03And you're going to use somebody else's art to get her? Are you kidding? We're just starting. We need to learn how to play. Do the sax pistols know how to play? You don't need to know how to play.
33:11Matt Singer:Who are you, Steely Dunn? You need to learn how not to play. What I was really thinking about when I started thinking about this movie, which I have seen many times, many more times than Jordan has seen Moonlight, I can guarantee that, is that when brothers are the focal point of a movie, like Little Brother, It is so often a story about sibling rivalry and competition like Little Brother. I mean, the whole, you know, of course, there's a reconciliation and there's always a scene where it's like, actually, I always was jealous of you. You can almost guarantee it in every movie. And sure enough, there is one like that in Little Brother.
33:47And that is a valid thing. A lot of brothers in real life have that kind of relationship. But there are other kinds of brotherly relationships that are normal, that are normal, that are supportive, that are warm. And that is so much rarer to see in a movie, but you do get to see some of that in Sing Street. Brendan is, he's a burnout, basically. He's a college dropout. He's a stoner. He doesn't have a lot going on. And yes, there are times when he is a little jealous of Connor because his parents, he's always, he's telling him like, you know, you don't understand what it was like when I was your age, when I was a kid.
34:22You don't know what they were like, meaning their parents. But he also is the one who encourages him to write his own songs to not just be a cover band uh he encourages him to create and and you know he he says one of the big lines in the film which is that rock and roll is a risk you risk being ridiculed and he encourages him to embrace the risk and at a key moment in this story which I will not spoil. He is the one who like gives him the push to take the ultimate risk basically in his life and to live up to that philosophy. And every time I watch the movie that this is just one of the things that I love about it is that relationship between these two brothers.
35:09It's a great movie on a lot of levels. The music is amazing. The soundtrack is incredible.
35:14Matt Singer:And, you know, and the look of it also because it looks like 80s period details are great. But this is like one of the undersung things about it in a movie that is kind of undersung. Well, maybe at this point people love it more. But when it came out. It has its fans, but it was not a big hit. And it was the follow up to Once by John Carney. And it wasn't as big of a hit. Follow ups to Once. Follow ups. Yeah, it wasn't as big of a sensation as Once. Once became a Broadway show, which I'm sure is still out there. And they even did try to make a Broadway or a stage version of it. You know, the stage version of Once became a huge phenomenon.
35:48It won Tony's. It played Broadway. It was this huge hit. And the stage version of Sing Street, I never even got to see it. I don't think it ever came to Broadway. Or if it did, it was there very, very briefly.
35:59Matt Singer:It was more like Sing cul-de-sac. It didn't actually even become a street. That's terrible. Absolutely awful. Anyway, that's my recommendation. Yeah, it's a good one. Sing Street. It is streaming right now on Starz. If you have Starz or you can rent it.
36:18Oh, the riddle of the model
36:24Matt Singer:I've only seen Sing Street the once, actually, but I really like, I saw it, I don't know. Very rewatchable film. Yeah, no, I loved it. I saw it at the world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Sitting next to our mutual friend, Mike Sampson. Big ups to Mike, if you're listening. And he and I, I remember afterwards, we're just like high-fiving each other. Like, just what a movie. This is why we schlepped all the way to Utah to see this. You know, it was really a good time. So, yeah, I love that. Well, my rec seg for the recommendation segment is I am sticking with the sort of the formula of Little Brother.
37:00Matt Singer:And as you mentioned, it's pretty it's not it did not they did not reinvent the wheel to have the stuck up guy and then the wacky Tasmanian devil. And there's a million of them. And it goes back to, you know, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. it goes back even further. I'm sure it goes back to the ancient Greeks to have this in drama. But I got to go with my favorite of the formula. Captain Kirk and the Gorn. No? I'm going to let you try to guess it for a second. It's from 1979. So it's from the height of New Hollywood, but it was not directed by a great auteur. In fact, who the heck was it? Yes, that's who the director was.
37:41Matt Singer:And it is set It's primarily in the New York, New Jersey area until the third act when they go to an unnamed Latin American country. Oh, maybe I don't know what this is. Okay. I had a feeling I thought I knew what it was and couldn't think of the... Oh, did he get it? He got it. Man, Sam's on fire today. The movie is The In-Laws from 1979, which is a rare thing in life, a perfect thing. Now, I know earlier on today's podcast, I joked around and said that Little Brother was better than most Oscar winners. And I guess now's the time to say I was kind of kidding. No, you weren't. You weren't kidding.
38:27Matt Singer:Here I really mean it. When I say the 1979 film The In-Laws, directed by Arthur Hiller and written by Andrew Bergman, who wrote a million great things, truly is a perfect comedy. It stars Alan Arkin as a New Jersey dentist who is very tightly wound. And his daughter is about to marry a guy whose father is played by Peter Falk. And Peter Falk and Alan Arkin did several films together, kind of like Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. I believe this was the first time they were paired together, but they did do it again. And what you discover, at first you just think Peter Falk is a nutcase and Alan Arkin is very tightly wound.
39:12Matt Singer:But later you discover that his madness is with a purpose. He actually is in the CIA and he uses his lunacy as a bit of a cover. And he's involved in a very complicated CIA overthrow situation. And basically what it means is these two wacky guys end up running around Latin America. There's a scene with a lot of things going on. But the thing is, the movie has several great set pieces. And the one for me that I think is perfect, it's like a little play. It's after Alan Arkin realizes that his wacky soon to be in law is more than just a nutcase. He actually is working for the CIA. And they sit at a diner and a classic New York City 1979 coffee shop, which I later learned was actually a set built in Hollywood.
40:04Matt Singer:it. I was very depressed to learn that because it looks legit. And they start screaming at each other. And it's a really long sequence where they're just zinging back and forth. Boom, boom, boom. I mean, just the lines are so good. And they're all just like regular New Yorkers circa 1979 who just could not give a rat's ass. These people are screaming at each other, just going on, having their lunch and eating their soup. You robbed the United States Mint on your own? The CIA thought it was too crazy? Too risky. So you went ahead and robbed it on your own with gangsters you committed a federal crime of course it's federal the treasury department is on the case so what happens if you get caught we won't get caught not stop the week and it's just very very very funny and then um there's a very famous sequence of course where um they're being shot at in latin america and peter falk because he's from the cia cia knows that you have to run to evade the bullets you run in a serpentine manner sure so it's it's which means you kind of make S's you don't just run straight and there's this great kind of recurring gag where they shout his name is Sheldon of course Alan Arkin is Sheldon serpentine shell serpentine and it's just kind of a funny catchphrase um I I don't know obviously I saw this movie when I was very young I'm not old enough to have seen it I mean I could have seen the theater but one of the three um I saw it you know on VHS uh in the 80s and it was just like up there with Mel Brooks and classic Woody Allen for just like the big, big dumb comedies that I love.
41:33Matt Singer:But it's actually not that dumb. It's actually very sharp. And it was remade in the early 2000s. I was going to ask if you've ever seen. I have never seen the remake. Because I heard it was terrible. You don't want to sully the memory of the classic original. I truly don't. I truly don't. I considered going. It's like I said, it's Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks. And I love Albert Brooks. Sure. I could see him doing it. But I heard it was a disaster and I just turned my back on it. So I refuse. Okay. Maybe someday I'll see it. I don't know. But this is so good. It's a great pick. Yeah, you see it, right?
42:08Matt Singer:It's so good. Where is the in-laws streaming right now? I know the answer to that question. Good. It is free. Free on Tubi and Hoopla. Hoopla. Those are free, but they will have ads. Yes. it's not um unfortunately it's not on any of the services uh like hulu or anything but you can pay if you don't want to watch the ads you can pay$3.99 to watch on amazon prime or on apple uh that's kind of the the standard um it's worth the$3.99 but watch it with the ads it won't kill you i mean uh you know you can serpentine through the ads yeah it's so good it's just so funny and um um you know watching it as a kid i didn't understand um like the the premise of like how they're gonna what they're gonna do is they're gonna it involves like engravings from the u.s mint and depreciating the value of currency and i had no idea what was going on so it was one of those movies where like then i learned a few things about you know inter global economics it explained to me the current like at the time i was a kid like what do you mean they have different money in a different country it's dollar dollars everywhere well no it's different and it you know much like Trading Places, you watch that as a kid, you're like, what the hell is going on at the end?
43:22Matt Singer:You learn about Orange Futures. You learn a little bit about trading. These films are educational. They're very educated. Trading Places and the in-laws. I learned a lot watching Little Brother about things that I refuse to talk about on camera and on podcast mics. Serpentine! What? Serpentine!

46:16Matt Singer:So we have two good recommendations, Sing Street and The In-Laws. They're both very good. Sing Street is a little bit less silly, but they're both... Well, it's much less silly. It has lighthearted moments, but it's more of a dramedy. It's a real movie, but there are funny parts. Sure. But The In-Laws is all comedy, all humor, but not as grotesque. There's nothing lewd in it. You can watch it with Grandma. it's a masterpiece I mean you watched Little Brother with Grandmas not your grandma but you told us you were watching it while grandmas were watching you I know it's terrible I should be ashamed I'm going to be barred from the library soon I can't believe it hasn't happened yet I mean if you could do that and not get barred I think it's like Thunderdome in there anything goes let's get to our personalized recommendation now remember you can email us feedback at filmspottingsvu.com and you can request a recommendation.
47:09We love to give recommendations to our listeners. Just tell us what kind of movie you're looking for, what kind of a scenario you're going to be watching it in, what kind of streaming services you use, all these sorts of things. The more information, the better. And we've got a great one this week.
47:26Matt Singer:Shout out to last week's, though. The guy, I want to know if your married life has been healed because it sounded to me like that guy was getting rough there. There was a marital discord. I think you might be overselling it slightly. No, no, no. He came to us for aid in this time of woe. And I hope that we healed the bridge between them. You healed the bridge. Okay. Yeah. All right. Yeah. Well, do you want to read the letter or shall I read? Why don't you read it? Go ahead. Okay. I mean, I'll let you. It's a long letter now that I look at it. It's huge. But here we go. Hi, Matt and Jordan. My friend Mark and I have been meeting up one night a week to watch films.
48:04Matt Singer:we especially love discover this is nice by the way meet up with a friend to watch a movie that's great stop on the stop being on the internet and go go hang out with with mark and um joel my friend mark and i have been meeting up one night a week to watch films we especially love discovering films and directors unknown to us we like arty films and recently have loved diving into the films of Joachim Trier, Sean Baker, Bong Joon-ho, Olivier, I don't know how to pronounce his letter. Olivier Assayas. Yeah, Assayas, that guy. And Ken Loach, which is, I wasn't expecting that name because he's a little bit more old school, but he's still working.
48:44Matt Singer:Ideally, though, we are looking for recommendations under two hours because Mark and Joel have to get home. We meet up on a Tuesday and often tired from work. So two hours is usually our limit. That's fair. I've included a tagged list of films we've watched so far. obviously separately we've watched much more than this but it gives you the idea of what we've been seeing between us we have pretty much all the streaming services but let's limit it to criterion and movie what film school kind of films under two hours would you recommend for our movie night and then he includes um the list which is a little bit of everything like you said yes i did look i did look at it everything from after hours an alien romulus to a woman under the influence and the worst person in the world.
49:27Yes, it's a very wide-ranging. They have very omnivorous taste in movies. That's great. It's wonderful.
49:32Matt Singer:That's what it's all about. And by the way, they live in Melbourne, Australia. So by the time they hear this, it's already tomorrow. That's a good point. So we better give them an answer quick. We better hurry up. Yeah, you're right. It's already Tuesday over there. Yeah, we better hurry. So Matt Singer, I ask, I'll let you go first. They want something on Criterion or Mubi. These are smart, arty-farty guys. They like Olivier Assay, Ken Loach, but also Sean Baker, which means they're perverts. And they want something that's under two hours. What do you got? Well, first of all, I also I want to we kind of already said it, but I love film clubs and that they have this film club.
50:11It's a very small one in this case, but I have done discussion groups and I've hosted film clubs. I don't understand why film clubs aren't more of a thing. Book clubs, everybody talks about book club. Book club, book club. Who likes books?
50:25Matt Singer:And also, you know what you get? Come by, the Rangers are playing. We got to watch the Mets game together. Yeah, sports clubs. Sports club. They don't call it sports clubs. They call, hey, my buddy John. Film clubs are where it's at. Start a film club. They call it, my buddy John's coming by with a six pack of Coors Light. We're going to watch the game. But that's sports club. Yeah. Call it sports club. Yeah, they should. Come by and watch Little Brother. Maybe not Little Brother, but, you know. Or one of the movies we're going to recommend. Right. Right, on Rex Egg. That's right. For Joel and Mark, you know, let's just run it back.
50:56They want an arty film. It's got to be under two hours. Available on Criterion or Mubi. And by sheer coincidence, I just watched something that really fits the bill here. It is a 1962 Japanese drama.
51:14Matt Singer:I thought we had the same one. No, we do not. I doubt it. Okay. Because my film is a film called Pitfall by the director Hiroshi Teshigahara. The reason I watched it is a few years ago on the Criterion Collection, I was watching things. And that is where this film is also available, I should mention. And I just decided to watch Teshigahara's The Face of Another. I had never seen it. And it absolutely blew me away. It is. I'm very stingy with my five star ratings on Letterboxd. and that is one of I don't know I don't know how many five star movies I've had like older movies that I'm watching for the first time in the last two or three years but this was one of them The Face of Another and it's good dittos on that one it's a hell of a picture I just I loved it you know I saw it on a lot of greatest films lists and I loved it and last week I like Joel and Mark was looking for something on Criterion to watch before I went to sleep that wasn't too long.
52:19And I realized, looking around, browsing through my list or whatever it's called over there of titles, that I had never really gone through Teshigahara's other movies after I fell in love with The Face of Another. His most famous movie is probably Women in the Dunes, which is a bit long for our rules here. 146 minutes. Too long. Too long. But Pitfall, 97 minutes. and it really packs quite a punch as well. It is about an impoverished miner who's traveling through Japan trying to scrape by, picking up these little series of short-term mining jobs around the country. And I don't want to spoil too much of what happens because the movie takes several genuinely surprising twists and turns and that is part of the fun.
53:13But there are murders. there are ghosts there are unexplained doppelgangers the movie is strikingly beautiful in black and white has this incredible atmosphere this foreboding sweaty stifling heat baked into every frame of this film and once you get to the end of those 97 minutes you see that it presents this vision of both life and death as this twinned purgatorial existences, traps that cannot be escaped from. It is kind of like if David Lynch had made a Twilight Zone episode in mid-20th century Japan. Oh. And I did not like it as much as The Face of Another. I think that's like just over two hours.
54:11Yeah. So if if Joel and Mark will not fit, you must have quit. You can't use it. If Joel and Mark have a few extra minutes, I would absolutely recommend that one as well if they haven't seen it. But this one is it's right in that sweet spot. It confirmed for me that Teshigahara is one of my guys, one of my Mark Maron, my guys in the world of independent or I should say international cinema. cinema and so that's the one i'm going to recommend pitfall that's awesome on the criterion channel i've never seen pitfall so you were recommending it not just to mark you know it is not a a you know it's certainly not one of his most famous films or one of like the biggest 60s japanese cinema films but i i thought it was awesome i i think it fits the bill here
55:00Matt Singer:what do you have the other ones what do you have for joel and mark well it's funny because you went to you said that was 61 pitfall 62 62 because my film is from 63 so i thought for a minute i i got confused and i thought it was it was the same year um so we're kind of in the classic zone of when not that either of us were alive at the time but in america it was like foreign films were a thing and it kind of like early 60s is when that was and this is this is not one of the most famous of those big ass, you know, you must see this intellectual foreign film, but it is by one of the, if there's a Mount Rushmore of that time, he's on the Mount Rushmore.
55:45Matt Singer:I think the Mount Rushmore, if you're going to pick four of the big ass guys in this period, you're going to have Akira Kurosawa. Yeah. You're going to have Francois Truffaut. You're going to have... Thank you. Someone else I can't think of. Oh, no, you're going to Federico Fellini. Sure. And then you're going to have this guy from a different country. I bet you Sam could figure it out. He's not from France, Italy or Japan. But he's probably the most when there was a time in our lives. There he goes. Sam's always got it. Ingmar Bergman, the king of this kind of hyper intellectual and maybe hasn't aged as well as it could have.
56:23Matt Singer:But like of its time, it was like hilarious. They're all really funny. They have a good beat and you can dance to them. There is one solid joke in the movie I'm about to mention, which is otherwise totally enraptured in despair. The movie is Winter Light. Oh. This is one that I really like. And I think it's particularly relevant because I have a hunch that these guys have probably seen Paul Schrader's First Reformed. First Reformed. And First Reformed is very, very influenced to the point of near thievery, but very, very influenced by Winter Light. Winter Light and Diary of a Country Priest had a baby and its name was First Reformed.
57:07Matt Singer:So Winter Light is 81 minutes, guys. So you can really crack this one out in no time. and it is sort of the epitome of very serious Ingmar Bergman movies. I believe that if the movie was not in Swedish with English subtitles, no American would take it seriously because if these people were, if you were to watch a movie and people were to talk like this in English, you'd be like, shut up. Like, come on, get over it. They're very serious. They're just talking about existentialism and the silence of God and their misery and their woes. And it's like, you don't have it that bad. Come on. And then it's in black and white.
57:46Matt Singer:It's very beautiful. It's mostly shot inside. It's mostly shot inside a very tiny little church. Now, the main character is a fella by the name of Tomasz Eriksson, played by Gunnar Bjornstrand. And he is the first 10 minutes, and it's only 81 minutes, so it's a big percentage, is just a church service. You see him doing his spiel and then he's offering the host and the wafer and the wine. And then he goes kind of like into his little ready room, as Jean-Luc Picard would say, and begins living his life. And that's when the movie really starts. But during those first 10 minutes, a lot of close up on the few people that are in the room and they all just look miserable.
58:29Matt Singer:Close ups of these very photogenic Swedes looking miserable in glorious black and white. It's kind of a parody of a depressing Swedish movie. Anyway, what you discover is that Gunnar Bjornstrand is a widower. His wife passed away four years ago. He has not gotten over it, although he does have a mistress and she loves him to pieces. And she is also an atheist and she's dating a reverend. But she's trying to pull him into the world to live again, but also taking him away from his practice, which is belief in God. So this sort of paradox there. But then the story, such as it is, is when one of his parishioners comes to see him.
59:12Matt Singer:Well, two, it's a husband and wife played by Gunel Lindblom and Max von Sydow, who even in 1963 looked old. And we learned that Max von Sydow is depressed and is contemplating suicide. And the reason he gives is he read an article in the newspaper that the Chinese are developing an atomic bomb. And this is enough to just set him in an existential spiral, similar to how in First Reformed, the guy read an article about peak oil and the environment's going to be terrible and just sense him off. What it really means is the guy was ready to get set off. Now you'd read an article about anthropic or open AI going to kill us all.
59:50Matt Singer:Right. But it's really not about that. It's about existential woe and the silence of God and blah, blah, blah. And then the rest of the movie is kind of them talking. And then I don't want to give too much away. Something happens. It gets more depressing. and but it's about this guy deciding what the priest deciding whether he should embrace life again and or remain sad and um but it's short and it's it's it's it's it's eloquent even though it is kind of purple prose non-stop but it's i kind of love it i remember i've seen it a few times and i remember the first time i saw it was when i was at new york university place you know very well met singer and this was in a day before netflix and if you wanted to watch a movie you could go to the film library and they had a galaxy of cassette of videotapes and a few laser laser discs i watched laser discs there that's right and you would fill out a little thing i'm sure most colleges have this you fill out i want tape 0 6 8 4 and they put you in a little carol and you'd sit in room can i you'd sit and watch it on a tiny little screen yeah um and i remember blazing through Bergman because he was the guy back then still in the 90s he was like if you wanted to be a serious film scholar you need to go with him and um I remember blazing through them and some are better than others and I just remember really liking this one because it was so compact and uh and not just because 81 minutes is a very compact story and clearly Paul Schrader liked it as well but at the time I was like so young that like I didn't really get the movie I was more like, hey, I'm 18 and I'm watching Ingmar Bergman movies.
1:01:31Matt Singer:I'm cooler than all those schmucks back in my hometown. They're watching Die Hard 2 all day and I'm being smart. So I kind of watched it more as a patting myself on the back. They're watching Little Brother in the library. And I'm watching Winter Light in a different library, man. Exactly. So then I saw it again later when Film Forum had a Bergman retrospective. and I watched it again a little older but not as old as I am now and I remember like feeling impacted by the emotional plight of these characters like you know oh my god life is heavy and we have like oh depression is real and we have to figure it out we have to find connection and I really was and I really was taken by it I watched it again now in for for these uh for the rexag and even more age and perhaps more wisdom and I remember my primary thought was like this guy's a putz like just stop being so mean the guy's just like if he was just a little bit nicer to people his life would be better yes and i mean i get it his wife passed away he's very upset but it's been four years you gotta you gotta you gotta embrace life of course he's living in sweden where it's snowy all the time but i just i just remember i i've seen it now three times and i've had three very different reactions and i think that's the mark of a good film uh so in conclusion my pick is winter light it is on the criterion channel for those listeners who don't have criterion again 399 on amazon or apple and um it's funny uh sam just put in the chat the letterbox plot summary is quote a swedish pastor falls fails fails oh sorry a swedish pastor fails a loving woman a suicidal fisherman and god yeah i mean i guess i guess yeah listen to jordan maybe let his description might have been a little more detailed.
1:03:24But it's a biggie. It's a biggie.
1:03:26Matt Singer:It's not, you know, it's not, I think It's a great pick. No, I actually, I had never It's not his most famous. No, of course. I would say Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal. But does anyone really need us to recommend The Seventh Seal? No, this is great because it's one of the lesser known ones. It's only 80 minutes. I had never seen it until a couple years ago. I watched it on the Criterion channel like in 2024. And I loved it. And my favorite thing you didn't mention about it that's fun because there's not a lot fun about winter light but here's something fun it was do you know who the cinematographer of winter light is it was probably sven nyckvist that's right it was sven nyckvist so i just like that you can say to someone the same man shot winter light and sleepless in seattle and it's just just shows the totality the beauty of cinema that it can encompass so much that one man could shoot both of these two drastically different drastically tonally different things it is it is true it's very funny to watch cinematographers careers because i just read david thompson's new book uh called a sudden flicker of light and um he mentions this like some of the great cinematographers who like Sven Nykvist, who'll work with Ingmar Bergman, will then do...
1:04:45Matt Singer:I mean, I like Sleepless in Seattle, but it's not, you know, it's a very different type of movie. It's just very different. I'm not insulting it. It's just that... No, no, no, no. Think about that all the way you described how serious it is and how ponderous Winter Light is. It's existential. The best one is he talks about Carl Freund, F-R-E-U-N-D, who was a German, and he shot Metropolis and other German UFA films. Fritz Lang and others. Right. All Quiet on the Western Front. Was that another one of his? Yeah. Okay. The Last Laugh. The Last Laugh. Of course. These are like foundational movies that improvise with the camera.
1:05:23Matt Singer:Masterpieces. And do new things with lighting and do new things with just camera movement. And then he came after the war. He came to Hollywood and he continued to work. But where he really found where he could punch the clock and have a steady gig was he was the cinematographer on I Love Lucy. Yes. And he created the concept of sitcom flat lighting. Multicamera. That's right. He pretty much invented the way to light multicam, which is to blast it all with light and make it look kind of ugly. Right. And he did it for I Love Lucy. And then every other sitcom ever, like different strokes and the facts of life, all those garbage TV shows, they all stole.
1:06:05Matt Singer:Not stole. They took the mold. They said, we're going to do it the Carl Freund way. And it's just funny to think of cinematographers and you'll see that a lot. Like you'll have a great cinematographer who works in these erudite films will then pump out something like, you know, something a little bit more that you wouldn't expect. A job's a job. A job's a job. Absolutely. So with that, Winter Light, and that's on the Criterion and elsewhere. And I think this is the only podcast where you're going to hear a rave about Little Brother. Parabolas of urine. the way he's been he pees in his own mouth at one point and that takes some flexibility let me tell you and but enough about max von seido and winter light and then also uh no and then i'll also recommend winter light all right so let's run down our rex egg here very quickly just to recap we've got sing street which is on stars the in-laws which was you said that was on tubi and hoopla correct correct yeah and then both of our uh personalized wrecks were on the criterion channel we had Pitfall and Winter Light.

1:09:40Matt Singer:Matt Singer, does Sam have a new game for us? Why are you asking me? Let's ask him. He would know. Hello, Sam. Do we have a new game? I realize we talk about these as like new games every week, as if you could put one in a box and sell it at a game store. I'm hoping to eventually. I realize I would like to do that, but I realize really what we've been doing every week are like Jeopardy categories. That's kind of what this is, right? Yes. Jordan, Jeopardy Man? One of them specifically was a lot like the before and after. Yeah, that was the Portmanteau. Portmanteau to Toe. I thought it was Portmanteau Jam or something like that.
1:10:17Matt Singer:Portmanteau to Toe, yeah. I'm open to changing the name. So Sing Street was on my mind. I have to just jump in. I had so many thoughts during this great episode so far. with Sing Street. I have like a movie club that I host every month at a local bar in town here in Spring Green, Wisconsin. And I just showed Sing Street in June and I love it as a brother movie. This is why, the second time I saw it, I was like, oh, this is secretly a brother movie and there's so few of them, it's fantastic. I just want to run by a theory that I put out there when I screened it in June that I wonder, is it obvious or is it maybe just a little bit of a secret special thing that makes this movie even more wonderful?
1:11:00Let's hear it. The song that plays over the last scene, Connor is boating across the Irish Sea or whatever it is. And the song that plays is not one of Connor's, but is Brendan's song that he has just tucked into Connor's jacket.
1:11:20Matt Singer:Has this occurred to you in your multiple viewings? is that one of the last things that Jack Rainer's - I have to go back and rewatch the scene, but I like this theory. One of the last things that Jack Rainer's Brendan does before this beautiful scene where he sees off his brother taking this leap of faith is he has this, he very explicitly says, this is something I wrote. This is a song I wrote. He tucks it into his jacket and then we hear the song and it seems so obvious, but I asked several other people and they didn't quite make that connection. It's a beautiful song. It's a beautiful sentiment.
1:11:50And it also goes back to, you mentioned how one of the great moments in the movie is when Brendan says rock and roll is about risk. And it's Brendan's risk is putting his emotions on the line. I like it. I like it. It's so good.
1:12:06Matt Singer:It's so good. What listeners don't know is that behind, as Sam is saying rock and roll is a risk, there's two guitars behind there. Well, a ukulele and a guitar, neither of which I play, but my children play. What is that to your right, though? Is that a telephone then? Oh, no. Fax machine? I don't know what that is. But okay. But two guitars. I thought it was three. Yeah, you're right. There's three. That's enough though. For some, it's only one guitar is enough. You know what's another great brother movie that's not a brother movie, but when you watch it enough, you realize it is, is Crimes and Misdemeanors.
1:12:38Matt Singer:Oh, yeah. Which is a great - Shot by Sven Nyquist. Ah, that's right. It is Sven Nyquist. Six Degrees of Sven Nyquist. This is a Woody Allen movie and Martin Landau is an ophthalmologist. He did well. And his brother, Jerry Orbach, is a mafioso. And he needs him. It's a whole complicated thing why he needs him. And they've had divergent paths, but they're still there for one another. And they're both kind of like old men schlepping around. They really do look like brothers, too. It's very good casting. And Crimes and Misdemeanors, which I think I may have mentioned in passing before. on this podcast is a masterpiece.
1:13:18Matt Singer:And it is one that is also a secret brother movie, like Sing Street. Yeah, secret brother movie, great movie. So what is the game this week? Okay, so let's get to this game. Okay, so this game related to your conversation about Little Brother earlier in the show is called So You've Seen a Bautista Load of Movies, have you? Oh, wow. Oh, boy. Oh, boy. This is Matt Singer's going to win this one. Cena or Batista. I'm going to say a title of a movie. You're going to tell me if it was Cena or Batista. Okay. These are former. I like my chances here. Now I'm going to tell you, this is one we're going to try where you're taking turns.
1:14:00This is not a buzz situation. Oh, okay. I'm going to see and we're going to tally it all up. I'm going to give you a movie. You either know it or you don't. You're going to guess Cena or Batista. And I am going to tell you, my son Dave helped me out with this. in addition to movie titles that either feature cena or batista i have i have invented a few titles my son and i invented a few titles oh so now how do we neither what do we what do we say you're gonna have to say no neither neither that's made up sam that is not a real movie well i have one question are there real titles sprinkled in that neither of them are no okay okay no that's
1:14:35Matt Singer:got it so the godfather part two the godfather part two will not be mentioned right that they're either in it, one of them is in it, or it was completely invented. Now, this is going to be tricky because while I do not certainly know all of them, have seen all of them, Dave Bautista in particular has made a lot of tiny little action movies in the last few years, many of which sound made up. So it's going to be, this could get very tricky. Well, this is what gave me the idea, of course. You're exactly right, but they both made a ton of movies. Okay. All right. Have you seen a, what is this called?
1:15:07So you've seen a Bautista load of movies, have you? Oh, very good. It's an incredible title.
1:15:13Matt Singer:It's marvelous. I'm getting it tattooed across my upper back tomorrow. Step aside, Portman toe-to-toe. I know. We have a new champion. All right. So I'm going to start with you, Matt, and we're just going to alternate. Okay. So this is for you to guess. So it's either Sina, Bautista, or neither. Correct. Got it. Number one movie. Trap House. Cena, Batista, or Invented? I believe this is a real movie. Okay. And I am going to guess... Boy, this is tricky. It is tough. I feel like I've seen a poster for this movie with both of these guys on it. But I'm going to say it's a Cena. Oh, it's Batista. This is tough.
1:16:00This is tough. It just came out last year. and it's streaming on Netflix. An undercover DEA agent and his partner embark on a game of cat and mouse with an audacious and surprising group of thieves. There are so many titles you're not going to get through all of them. I have like 21. Oh my God.
1:16:18Matt Singer:This is exciting. All right. Number two. The Bubble. The Bubble I know about. That's the Judd Apatow film which I did not watch because everybody said it was terrible. I think I have a hunch that's cena it is cena he plays steve the stunt coordinator jordan's winning again uh the bubble also on netflix streaming yeah i just see it for netflix yeah yeah it was made for netflix it was made for netflix yes yeah i i actually i actually would like to see it because i it's an interesting story i love a movie that came out last year or maybe even earlier this year called faca mall facum hall it was a parody of yes yeah it was a parody movie of yeah Downton Abbey.
1:17:03Matt Singer:Downton Abbey. And it was written by like 17 guys. And I interviewed a couple of the writers and I was asking about their previous work. And two of them, when they made The Bubble, they were in a COVID bubble. It was shot during COVID and, you know, it was all done. I don't know. It was one of a rare films that was made during COVID. Anyway, they got these two guys as gag writers to be like emergency gag writers on set. They were in the COVID bubble on set to come up with something silly to say at the spur of the moment. And I really like, I thought Facum Hall was very, very funny, almost as good as Little Brother.
1:17:41Matt Singer:And it took me a while to realize that the title itself is a bit of a pun and fun to say. Anyhow, yes, let's continue with the game. Okay, the game, Matt. I'm going to maybe throw you a bone here. I hope so, just so we can tie it up. Superman. oh wait who is it which one was in superman uh-oh uh-oh i'm i'm trying to remember which one was in superman jordan do you remember which one of these two beefy gentlemen was in superman i remember oh well it must be it must be batista because james gunn loves batista so i'm gonna say batista oh no oh no it's he was oh he was the stupid peacemaker. Okay, I'm going to give it to you.
1:18:25You got it. No, I didn't give it. Don't give it to me. Don't give it to me. You said the wrong name. I don't deserve it. I know. You're right. But I should have thought a little more because he loves both those guys. But you're right. He's uncredited. He just shows up as peacemaker. Okay, I thought maybe. No. I failed again. I'm telling you, I would be terrible at this game that I am posting. Let's just get through more of these because maybe I can get enough of them right or he can get enough wrong that I have a chance.
1:18:50Matt Singer:All I know is that when I was trying to picture those two very strong, handsome, bulky guys, and I just kept thinking of Paul Walter Hauser as Mole Man in Superman. He wasn't in Superman. That was Fantastic Four. Oh, that was Fantastic Four? Oh, God. I can't even keep my superhero movies. The Mole Man is in the Marvel Universe, not the DC Universe. Sure, man. Too many mole men are flying around in my head right now. What's the next one? All right. Here we go. Volume is going to help, Matt, here. We got to get through these. Superman is currently streaming on Prime Video and HBO Max. Number four, The Killer's Game.
1:19:26The Killer's Game.
1:19:27Matt Singer:That's a fake movie. Neither am I in it. Real movie 2024. Dave Bautista. When top hit man Joe Flood is diagnosed with a terminal illness, he decides to take matters into his - Friends with Rudd Landy, Joe Flood. He takes a hit out on himself, Bautista. Okay. Oh, that's clever. Number five. I think you'll get this one, Matt. My Spy colon The Eternal City. That is Batista. That is Batista. I have not watched it, but I might have seen the original one. We're going to tie. It's 1-1. Thank God. Oh, thank God. My Spy Eternal City currently streaming on Prime Video. That's a Prime franchise. I think they own that.
1:20:09I think they do. You're right. All right, Jordan. The Independent. The Independent.
1:20:17Matt Singer:that does sound vaguely familiar but the end i don't know it and i'm gonna play the odds here yep i think that is a fake movie is it real i love that i've thrown in the curveball i thought it was fake too i would have guessed fake movie it's real it's uh 2022 can i tell you that all of these movies there are like so many and all of them came out from 2020 in the last three years five last six years 2020 it's the final weeks of the most consequential presidential election in history and john cena just might be a viable independent candidate it's with joni turner smith and brian cox and it's streaming on Peacock and Canopy.
1:21:08The Independent. I'm still not convinced you didn't make that.
1:21:13Matt Singer:Did that play in theaters? It did play in theaters very briefly, yeah. Who distributed that? Was it like Quiver releasing or was it a real distributor? Ketchup Entertainment? Yeah, was it Ketchup Entertainment? All right, where are we? Back to you, Matt. Hold on. It is a real movie. Wow, there's a poster. It's a political thriller. Yeah, it sounds decent. I'd like to say it. It does sound good. The tagline, follow the lies, find the truth. And I like Jodi Turner-Smith, too. Where do I know her from? John Cena has the and credit in this. Oh, yes. With and out and John Cena. Wow. All right. All right, so we're still at 1-1.
1:21:55We're to number the seventh pick. Jackpot with an exclamation point.
1:22:00Matt Singer:This one I've seen. This is John Cena. I have seen this movie. It's not good. It's not great. It's Paul Feig. Paul Feig's jackpot. Feig, sorry, Feig, Feig with Awkwafina. Now, wait, I not only have seen it, I interviewed John Cena for this movie. Wow. Wow. Currently streaming on Prime Video. Yeah, in the near future, a grand lottery has been established. The catch killed a winner before sundown and legally claimed the multi-billion dollar jackpot. Yes, it's the running man. It's the purge meets the running man. It's all these things. and I was so disappointed because I am an Aquafina stan I adore her and I by the way Quiz Lady is a masterpiece one day we'll talk about that this is like the third time you've mentioned that movie I've seen that movie three times and it gets better every time Quiz Lady 3 Moonlight 1 but Aquafina and Jackpot even I can't recommend Jackpot it's pretty lousy yeah lousy movie I think that means that I am winning.
1:23:03And I think you said, Sam, the game's over. Game over. We've gone too long. Yep. Look at that time. All right, Jordan. Yep. Crankshaft. No exclamation point. Just Crankshaft.
1:23:14Matt Singer:That does sound like a movie. But I could just be thinking of the Jason Statham films. Yes. Crankshaft. Yeah. Crankshaft is a fake movie. God damn it. You're right. Yay. But there is a plot. A middle-aged garage worker, it's Cena. His nickname is Crankshaft. Yeah. Has dreams of competing on the NASCAR circuit. I like it. That's right. He's going to make it someday. Doesn't sound any more implausible than The Independent. I'll give you that. I don't think Cena or Batista could never be a NASCAR driver because they're too bulky. I mean, they take up too much weight and you've got to be able to get in.
1:23:53Matt Singer:That's a good point. It's like an astronaut, like an Apollo astronaut. What about the truck series? What about the NASCAR truck series? The monster truck series. He could drive the gravedigger. That might be a good movie, actually. Fair enough. All right. Funny close. Okay, so you got that. It's tied. So back to you, Matt. It's tied to two, Matt. Training season. Oh, gruff.
1:24:15Training season. Training season. The sequel to Training Day, Training Season. It's a whole season now. I do not know, but I'm going to guess that this is a Dave Bautista. It's made up. I'm sorry. It's made up. Oh, no. Disgraced special ops vet, Bautista, trains for a high-profile UFC fight, but on the night of the fight, the venue is taken hostage by terrorists along with the president. It's training season.
1:24:44Matt Singer:That sounds like a damn good movie. I had in my head, I was picturing, I had both Cena and Bautista with whistles around their neck, training an inner-city soccer team. Oh, that's good. We might go to the right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. Okay, back to 2-2. Jordan, Afterburn. That just sounds like a movie. Afterburn. Afterburn.
1:25:11Matt Singer:Afterburn is a feature film starring Dave Bautista. You're right. Oh, no, he's winning again. Any idea what this is about? It's real. It came out last year, 2025. Let me ask you, is it Afterspace Burn or is it one word? One word, Afterburn. Okay, so it's got to be about planes. It's about a pilot. You think. Oh, no. It's a post-apocalyptic film. After the burn. After the burn of the earth. But that's why I thought it might have had a space in the title. I know. It was the most made up of the real titles, I feel. Wow. The most made up sounding. It's about a group of treasure hunters, post-apocalyptic.
1:25:52They extract objects like the Mona Lisa and the Rosetta Stone while facing rival hunters, mutants, and pirates. It is astounding how many of these schlocks they've cranked out in the last, they've crankshafted out in the last six years.
1:26:07Matt Singer:And then they still, both of them do appear in good movies. I think that too. I'm not even including the ones that are like the most obvious. Yeah. Dune and - Oh, yeah. The Fast and Furious. And then M. Night Shyamalan, Knock at the Cabin Door. Knock at the door. Oh. Knock at the cabin. Knock at the cabin. Which I thought was really, I love that movie. And I thought Batista was fantastic in that. He was great in that movie. But then he's doing Afterburn in between. All right, good for him. All right, so Matt, we're to you, right? Yes. In the Lost Lands. I have not seen it, but that is a Batista.
1:26:43That is a Batista. It's a Paul W.S. Anderson. With Miller. Wow. That one has some, you know, Paul W.S. Anderson, the ultimate vulgar auteurist. So that one has some fans. I have not seen it yet. Hulu. Yeah. That one's not a true movie. So are we tied? We're tied again. Tied. Back to you, Jordan. Buttheads. It's called Buttheads.
1:27:06Matt Singer:Come on. If it's not a real movie, Jordan's going to write it. Come on. I feel like I would have heard about a movie called Buttheads if there was a movie called Buttheads. Okay. But I do also think that John Cena could have been in Buttheads and we just didn't know. but I'm going to say that buttheads sadly does not yet exist it's unfortunately not a real movie it's not a real movie but it does have a plot after getting fired two finance bros make a bet to see who can last longest as an Atlanta substitute teacher buttheads see that one should also have a space so it's like buttheads buttheads butting heads yeah alright so what's the score is it 4-3 Four, three.
1:27:53Oh, man. Matt, Vacation Friends 2. That is a real movie. That's a real movie. That's John Cena. John Cena, correct. I saw Vacation Friends 1. That's on Hulu. I never saw. I did not watch the sequel. That was not a film that needed additional. There were not a lot of questions left unanswered. All right. Jordan's tied. Four, four. Jordan. Parachute. Parachute. is this part of the plane
1:28:22Matt Singer:cinematic universe
1:28:26Matt Singer:Parachute Parachute is a real movie and it stars John Cena it's Batista it's real 2023 directed by Brittany Snow of Pitch Perfect fame Batista has just a supporting role here it's about a young woman discharged from rehab after struggling with food and body image issue is supposed to be pretty good. So it's not about jumping out of planes. It's about parachute. All right. All right. I'm down. No, it's tied. We're all tied up. Four, four. Matt. Yes. War, this is an acronym, W period, A period, R period. War 2 colon splashdown. War 2 colon splashdown. It's so detailed that I want to say it's fake just because I love the mythology around these because you even wrote the synopses.
1:29:18War 2 colon the splashdown. Not the splashdown, just splashdown and no hyphen, just one word, splashdown. I'm I feel like if there were two wars I would have heard about one of them W-A-R. I'm going to say it's fake. A follow up to the Afghanistan set streaming hit War. The sequel follows an elite Navy SEAL team as they infiltrate an unnamed South American country. It's fake. I'm saying it's fake. All right. All right. It's fake. War 2 splash. It felt like a - Do we know what war stood for? We know it's not - I tried to come up with that. World action response. Right. Oh, it's so good. All right.
1:30:02How many more do we have here? Two, four. Oh, God. Oh, God. I have a lot left. Okay. Let's do our lightning round. Let's go here. No jibber jabber. Just answers. Okay. Okay. Jordan. Sea of Thunder. Sea of Thunder. John Cena. Made up. Okay. Here we go. Okay. It's a mutiny on the atomic sub-USS Thunder. Okay. Heads of State, Matt. You're up. I've seen this one. I've seen this one. That's real. That's John Cena. That's Cena. That's with Idris Elba. You got it. That movie's good. Not bad. He must have been elected president in The Independent because he's the head of state. That's the sequel.
1:30:40Matt Singer:That movie is straight up good. Not even with an asterisk. like it's so silly. It's just an enjoyable motion picture. Prime Video. Streaming on Prime Video. That movie is like, if I were thumbs up, thumbs down, that's a thumbs up, believe it or not. I mean, it's dumb, but it's a thumbs up. All right. Jordan, Freelance. Oh, that is a movie. That is a movie. Who's in it? So I'm going to say Batiste's in it. It's Sina. I'm sorry. He's an ex-Special Forces operative. He takes a job providing security for a journalist as she interviews a dictator and then a coup breaks out. That was another bad one.
1:31:16That's freelance. I have seen that one. Matt, Recon 87.
1:31:24I'm going to say that one is made up. It's an intelligence specialist sent on a mission back in time to the year 1987 to secure valuable information that will deter World War III. It should be a movie. It's Recon 87.
1:31:38Matt Singer:Wow. That's a really good fake title. It's a good one. Matt's pulling ahead you got two on me you got seven four did I miscount I think you six four six four all right six four all right Jordan Hidden Strike got Jackie Chan or something how can there not have been a movie called Hidden Strike it's a strike but it's hidden there was a movie called Hidden Strike and in the picture somewhere is a fella by the name of Dave Bautista it's Cena Oh, he is with Jackie Chan, though. I was going to say, that actually is a Jackie Chan movie with John Cena. All right, we got two more. I think so. It's 6 '4".
1:32:21You might have this one in the bag here. Yeah, good. Matt, corrective action. Corrective lenses. I'm just going to say it's fake. with the help of a federal agent ex-con Peter Wilding changes his identity in order to infiltrate his former prison and take down the prison kingpin but love has other plans sure it's fake movie yeah but corrective action alright wow my son gets credit for the love has other plans that was Dave's that's good that was a good one alright fine so I think you've won Matt 6-4 I know I just got another 7-4 there's one more if you want to go for it to make it. Let's see, Jordan.
1:33:06There's no way I can win, but let me try it. The last one is Die Hart to Die Harter.
1:33:13Matt Singer:I hope that's fake because that sounds, that is fake. It has to be fake. That's real. It came out in 2024. It's by John Cena. Kevin Hart. Really? John Cena is Mr. 206. Okay. Wait, I've never seen it. It's streaming on Prime Video. Corrective Action and Recon 87. excuse me I gotta get to prime video watch Die Hard 2 that corrective action one sounded a lot like movies you didn't even mention that are real that Dave Bautista is in which was like there's like straight to video sequels to Escape Plan oh I like Escape Plan he is in like both of them and like they're like it's like one is called like Escape Plan 2 The Arbiters there's some like ridiculous title like that well Matt you won I did it so fun I did it This is episode 13.
1:34:04I'm now only up 10 to 3 on the games, but I've now lost three times.
1:34:10Matt Singer:I've lost three times. That's good. It's like you and Mr. Met can really have just - That was a good game. You've seen a lot of movies, Matt. Thank you. This is why. I know. I say that all the time. Well, listen, folks. I think it's terrific that you've been listening to this episode of... Did you just forget the name of the show? I'm so overwhelmed by losing the game. FilmSpottingSVU. There you go. And as we do at the end of each episode, we just want to very quickly remind you about what's new that's coming to streaming. I'll go up first real quick. These are theatrical releases that are newly available to rent or buy.
1:34:54Matt Singer:So even if you subscribe to Amazon or something, you still have to pay a few bucks to watch it, but it may be worth it. One of them is one of the two big hits of the summer, Back Rooms. Kane Parsons' weird, indescribable horror sci-fi thingamajig with Chewy Tell Ejiofor. And he goes into a furniture store and goes into the Back Rooms. And you need to see it. It's one of the most important movies of the year, really. It's very important because it represents, you know, the guy's like 18. He made this movie. It's ridiculous. Also, Kenji Tanegaki's The Furious. And I'm going to quote my friend Matt Singer, who wrote about The Furious.
1:35:34Matt Singer:I'm not sure there's anything here especially notable besides the fights. Thankfully, the fights are like 85 minutes of a 113-minute movie, and some of them are totally bananas. The last one, dot, dot, dot, hot damn. So that's a pretty good recommendation. also coming new to streaming but these are now available if you subscribe you don't have to pay extra Project Hail Mary one of the big ass movies of the year Ryan Gosling Rocky the Alien Spaceships what's her name singing Harry Styles it's on Prime Video you probably saw it in the theaters because it made 300 million dollars it is the third biggest movie of the year Jordan can you name the other two movies the only two movies that are bigger this year than Project Hail Mary so far sure I can one of them is going to be Mario Galaxies correct and the other one he's thinking domestic or internet or worldwide this is just domestic I was just looking this up so I know this this was domestic I actually don't know is it Obsession it is not Obsession although that certainly did very well in the chat sam is guessing toy story 5 it is not it's too new right it may eventually i guess pass it it is i'll give you i'll give you a hint that will make give it away it is also now the highest grossing biopic of all time oh yes yes yes it is michael it is michael michael jackson film michael that's the number two movie mario is one and michael is number two this is domestic I think internationally there's different numbers.
1:37:16Matt Singer:Yeah, those are two. The gold and silver are both pretty, but I never saw, I didn't see Mario Galaxies. It's bad. I saw it twice. Yeah, that's what I hear. I had to take two different groups of children to see it. Oh my God. And I disliked it. Terrible. But you know what's good? Well, good. You know what's decent is Minecraft. Project Hail Mary? And Project Hail Mary. But last year's Minecraft as a dopey, you know, video game movie. You really like Jason Momoa. I am trying to realize Jason Momoa can do no wrong in your eyes. I like him a lot. Now, also coming to streaming direct is the 4K restoration of Alejandro Gonzalez in Norituz Amores Peros, which has come to Mubi.
1:38:01Matt Singer:And, of course, now he's securing Tom Cruise an Oscar with Digger later this year. I can't wait for Digger. He did Birdman and he did, what's the biggie he made with Leo? Bardo, yeah. That was everyone's favorite movie, right? Bardo? The Revenant. But this is the one that started it all. And I remember seeing it at the time and it was kind of brutal and depressing, but I have not seen it since. So I'm game for a 4K restoration. And then finally, something new, something called Redux or Redoo Redoo, depending on how you pronounce it. On Hulu, available Friday, July 10, in an attempt to avenge her daughter's death, Irene Kelly travels through parallel universe.
1:38:46Matt Singer:The parallel universe is, plural, killing her daughter's murderer again and again. So it's like Edge of Tomorrow, Groundhog Day kind of scenario? I'm intrigued by Redux Redux. Who's in this movie, though, in addition to the character is played by a woman by the name of Michaela Michaels. redo and where's my car yes mikaela mcmanus is the actress and the director plural are matthew and kevin mcmanus what's going on with the mcmanus family wow are i guess are kevin and matthew wouldn't it be cool if they're all brother sister if kevin and matthew are brothers and their sister it is look at that i want to see this movie 100 all right filmmaking duo kevin and Matthew McManus wrote and directed Redo Redo, the third feature, and it also stars their sister.
1:39:41Matt Singer:That's very sweet. That's very nice. Oh, it's sweet how she goes through parallel universes obsessively killing the murderer of her daughter. It's so nice. I cannot wait to watch on Hulu Redo Redo. And then lastly, what do we have to say? That's it. That's about it. So that's what we're going to, that's going to be next week. You think we should do that one next week? Redo Redo? What does Sam think? Should we redo redo it Sam? I think the only factor is that it doesn't come to Hulu until next Friday. So I think we'll have to see. Yeah. We'll have to see if we can watch it early or maybe we could do it the next week.
1:40:18Maybe the next week though. All right.
1:40:19Matt Singer:All right. So let's. I mean. Yeah. We'll do next. So next week's pick could be. Redo redo. No no. Redux. Redux. If we don't do it. We'll have to figure something else out. We still haven't reviewed voicemails for Isabel, which continues to be very popular.
