In short
FilmSpotting SVU discusses Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s box office success, why it’s resonating with audiences, where to stream related Spider-Man titles, and plays a Spider-Man-themed “Rex Egg” recommendation segment plus a listener Q&A lightning round.
Guests/backgrounds
No traditional guests. Hosts are Matt Singer (Spider-Man author; longtime Spider-Man fan) and Jordan Hoffman (co-host). They reference cross-promotion with FilmSpotting’s spinoff Movie Deathmatch (Spider-Man 2 vs Into the Spider-Verse debate).
Key claims
The hosts are surprised Brand New Day is making about a billion quickly. They argue it’s not “A+” but is “pleasant” and well-made. Possible reasons: Tom Holland and Zendaya’s popularity and peak visibility, strong marketing that doesn’t require deep Spider-Man knowledge, and China boosting the box office (previous Holland film reportedly didn’t open in China). They also claim Sony must keep producing Spider-Man films due to license terms, with Marvel producing to keep quality high.
Notable examples
Spider-Man 2 (Doc Ock), Into the Spider-Verse (animated debate), the China release point, and streaming locations (Brand New Day wide release; Holland films on Disney+; Across the Spider-Verse on Disney+; Into the Spider-Verse on Netflix). Recommendations include The Phantom (1996) and Breaking Away (1979), plus Italian dark satire Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion and Holy Motors via a Tokyo omnibus short.

2:41Jordan Hoffman:MJ, Ned, the entire world has forgotten Peter Parker, which is taking some of the fun out of being Spider-Man. It's Spider-Man brand new day, which is currently Hulk smashing box office records all over the globe. I'm Matt Singer. And I'm Jordan Hoffman.
3:00Matt Singer:With more movies, more series, more stuff going straight to streaming than ever before, It felt like the right time for a podcast that keeps track of it all. And that podcast is FilmSpotting SVU, the podcast you are listening to right now. This week, Brand New Day gives us a chance to talk about all things Spider-Man, including the many web-slinging titles that are available to stream, plus some Brand New Day-related streaming recs, plus this week's new-to-VOD and streaming titles, and a game. We're going to find out how well we know our Spider-Man villains, aren't we, Matt? And Matt's going to know them better than me.
3:42Matt Singer:I'm going to bet that I know them better than you, Jordan. No offense. You're Mr. Spider-Man. I am. You are the Spider-Man.
3:47Jordan Hoffman:I legally changed my name. My legal last name is Matthew Spiderman. Many people don't realize that.
3:53Matt Singer:So anyway, where is it all coming up, Matt?
3:56Jordan Hoffman:It's all coming up on FilmSpotting SVU.
4:05Jordan Hoffman:Welcome to FilmSpotting SVU. I'm Matt Singer and Jordan. Yeah. We were, we were supposed to be. I was hoodwinked and bamboozled into believing this was a friendly neighborhood streaming podcast. And now this is our second episode, or we did have a week off in between. Yes. This is our second consecutive episode where the main, the headline subject is a movie that's only available in theaters. Well, that's your fault, Matt.
4:38Matt Singer:What? It's all your fault. Listen, it's not my business that you have declared yourself one of the Internet's foremost experts on Spider-Man. Spider-Man. Spider-Man's your guy. Spider-Man. Spider-Man. Yeah. Spider-Man. Correct. As it happens, the listeners may not know, Matt Singer isn't just your friendly neighborhood podcaster. He is a published author about Spider-Man, and he loves Spider-Man. That is true. He loves it more than many members of his own family.
5:08Jordan Hoffman:In the room next to this is my bookshelf, which has actual books, but then lots of Spider-Man memorabilia and Spider-Man toys, Spider-Man tchotchkes.
5:19Matt Singer:Anyway, the point is this. Okay. Matt Singer really knows his Spider-Man, which is embarrassing because he's allegedly an adult, but he really knows his Spider-Man. And we're going to, and so we'd be fools to not take advantage, to exploit, to exploit the wisdom that appears on this show each week. Hence, we're going to talk about Spider-Man this week. Now, in addition to that, we'll also do our usual thing with, you know, the Rex Egg and all that, plus the game. Do you know what podcasts we're recording right now, Jordan? I didn't get much sleep last night. What do you want from me? So listen, we're going to start off.
5:56Matt Singer:You were on cross-promotion, other great film spotting show. Tell us about that real quick.
6:04Jordan Hoffman:Right. That is true. Yes. I was on the new film spotting spinoff movie Deathmatch, and it was me and Slate's Daisy Rosario. We were discussing, again, Spider-Man. I'm being typecast here. I don't know if it's the glasses, the pasty skin, the pocket protector, the fact that I am actually wearing a Spider-Man hat right now. But people keep asking me to talk about Spider-Man right now.
6:32Matt Singer:What is FilmSpotting's Deathmatch? Because FilmSpotting, the greatest of all movie podcasting networks, web works, if you will, in Spider-Man lore. They have so many great podcasts. What is Deathmatch?
6:45Jordan Hoffman:Movie Deathmatch is, it's kind of like the college debate mixed with a podcast where two people each take a side in a impossible to resolve, which is superior in this case. And the two Spider-Man movies that were up for debate were Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse. And which reigns supreme. And so we discussed back and forth. It was a lot of fun, actually. It was super fun to record. I haven't listened to the final episode yet, but I'm sure it was fun because it was super fun to talk about at least.
7:22Matt Singer:So do you come in with – did you already know I choose X and the other person chooses Y? Yes, yes.
7:27Jordan Hoffman:We're prepped in advance for which one you're going to – well, I will admit I did say I don't care. I can defend anything Spider-Man pretty much.
7:35Matt Singer:You're a man of no principles and you would just take whatever side is handed to you. That's right.
7:38Jordan Hoffman:I have no moral fiber and I have no scruples. Right. As long as you didn't make me defend the amazing Spider-Man, I could have probably done just about any movie in that franchise. But I did Spider-Man 2, which I do indeed love. And I also came with good things to say about Into the Spider-Verse, another movie I also love. But yeah, you can find the podcast wherever you listen to podcasts. Movie Deathmatch is the name of the podcast. I think it is available in the main film spotting feed as well. So it's very easy to find You can also just Google Movie deathmatch Spider-Man And I'm sure it will come up And yeah It was really It was way more fun Than this podcast Oh snap Nobody was Nobody was insulting My intelligence Because I like Spider-Man On that one What should we talk about With regard To one Spiderman
8:33Matt Singer:Well let me tell you Listeners of SVU So the legend goes A young writer by the name of Stanley Lieber was watching a fly crawl up a wall and he thought to himself, gee, wouldn't that be an interesting power for a superhero to have? So he dabbled with some new creations, Flyman, Mosquito Man, Insect Man. None of them really worked, but he finally came across Spider-Man and thus the legend was born. That is, if you believe Stan Lee, a well-known con man. By con man, of course, I mean convention man. He went to a lot of conventions. That's right. Please, I don't want to say anything negative about him.
9:19Matt Singer:He also decided that this time, the superhero would be a teenager because up until this point, most comic book heroes were not teenagers, even though that was who was primarily reading this stuff. The teenagers were the sidekicks like Robin and Bucky and things like that. Anyhow, Spider-Man, as I think we all know became a big success and of course spider-man has made his way onto film screens many times first in 2002 via sam raimi in one of the finest superhero movies ever made and then there was spider-man 2 which many people prefer uh and we've just learned that matt singer does too i because it includes uh doc dr octopus even though i'm told that dr octopus is merely an osteopath anyhow the third sam raimi movie was good too even though it was a shaggy mess and it got a negative, not a negative reviews.
10:10Matt Singer:If you watch it again, you'll find that it's actually a lot of fun. It's certainly better than most of the superhero movies of today. But then after these three Tobey Maguire led Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, there was two starring Andrew Garfield, which I barely remember, even though I did see them both until finally Tom Holland swung into the role first, not in his own movie, but as he was part of the Avengers and one of those and blah, blah, blah. But then eventually there was a nice trilogy where he and his friends played by Zendaya and Jacob Batalon. And then now there's a fourth one. And I got to be honest with you and the listeners, I have seen all of the Tom Holland movies.
10:54Matt Singer:I don't, I can't lie and say that they've really stayed with me. I remember a big sequence at the Washington Monument. And I remember a big sequence That was the first one, Spider-Man Homecoming. when Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire showed up and all three Spider-Men were zipping around on like a big bunch of metal sticks. A big bunch of metal sticks.
11:19Jordan Hoffman:It's called a scaffolding. You lived in New York for like 25 years. You don't know what a scaffolding is called?
11:24Matt Singer:A scaffolding is. And then there was a lot of other stuff. I don't really remember any of it. That was the third film. yeah and there there was a second one no clue no memory far from home i've watched all in europe and mysterio jake gyllenhaal yeah i do remember jake fury samuel jackson was in that no memory he was no memory no memory so so here's the thing these movies are fine and they're better than most but they're for young people and i think that's what i want to talk about today is the new one is making a billion dollars in under a week.
11:59Jordan Hoffman:Billion. Yes.
12:00Matt Singer:Everybody loves it. Well, that's not true. Everybody either thinks it's fine, like me, or they love it, which is great for them. But I think it's, for some reason, I just, I don't quite see how it's that good. But I don't want to be negative. And more importantly, I want to ask you what you think, because you are the King Spider-Man. And I need to know, am I just being a weirdo for thinking this movie is a B plus? or does it deserve its billion-dollar take at the box office?
12:28Jordan Hoffman:I mean, both things could be kind of true. It's not an A +, certainly, and I would not be ready to argue it's better than Spider-Man 2 or Into the Spider-Verse on movie deathmatch, but it's a very pleasant film. Does Into the Spider-Verse even count? Because that's a cartoon. Why wouldn't it count among Spider-Man films? It's a Spider-Man movie that was released in movie theaters, in what multiverse would it not count?
12:59Matt Singer:Well, I wouldn't even think of to include it because it's not a real movie. It's a cartoon.
13:04Jordan Hoffman:You have such a bias against animated movies, which hasn't really come up on this podcast much yet. It will eventually, I'm sure.
13:14Matt Singer:I think it's fine. I just did a little quick summation of the Spider-Man films. It never dawned on me to include into the Spider-Man. It has more Spider-Man in it than any other movie, you know, per minute. Yeah, but that's animated. You can do anything in animation. In a real movie, you have to go and get an actor to come to set to shoot him with a camera and in a cartoon, you just draw it on a piece of paper.
13:34Jordan Hoffman:Jordan, they're fictional films filled with special effects. Do you, I mean, let me put this in a language that you could understand. Do you not treasure the Star Trek animated series from the 1970s? Does that not, I know it's maybe canonically it did not count. But isn't it wonderful and marvelous, even though it's animated?
13:59Matt Singer:Yeah, I suppose. But it's not. But it's definitely like, you know, well, we can't do real Star Trek. So let's do this animated. But it has all their voices. That's true. Well, that's the thing.
14:10Jordan Hoffman:There's that one episode that's about Spock's childhood that's really good.
14:15Matt Singer:One that actually is really good. See? See? so you're saying i should watch into the spider verse are you telling me you've never watched into the spider verse never never it never it would never dawn on me to watch it like i because it's like where would i even see it's like on nickelodeon or something right i mean where would i even go to watch it you know we do have listeners who enjoy animated movies
14:40Jordan Hoffman:and you're just you're just denigrating them no some animated movies are good i like i like some
14:46Matt Singer:of them they're you know avatar is pretty good that's not bad i mean you know this is part of
Read the full transcript
14:52Jordan Hoffman:the thing that jordan does where he dismisses the entire genre of animation the entire medium of animation and then accuses avatar of being an animated movie because accusation it's just
15:04Matt Singer:honest it's it's all it's all computer generated blue guys running around it's mostly it's mostly Plus the kid. What's the kid's name? Spider. Oh, Spider. He's not a Spider-Man. He's a Spider-Kid. No, he's Spider-Kid. But yes, getting back to the matter at hand.
15:22Jordan Hoffman:Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's see how many trains you can derail in one episode of Film Spotting SVU. You're up to two so far, I think, by my count.
15:31Matt Singer:Let's talk about that in all sincerity. You are the king of Spider-Man. I love Spider-Man. Look, I do love Spider-Man.
15:37Jordan Hoffman:Yeah, yeah. But I am not so blind, blinded by my love of Spider-Man that I can't, I have to love everything Spider-Man. There's been bad Spider-Man movies and comics and TV shows. I already, I was saying, I do not like the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movies, both of them. I think they stink. I don't have an issue with him, but I don't think those are good movies at all. So I would tell you if I thought the new movie was bad. And I don't, I think it's quite good. I think they did a great job. And I think – I am – I'm not – I'm never surprised when people like Spider-Man because I love Spider-Man and I understand why people like the character.
16:14Jordan Hoffman:I am shocked it is doing as well as it is doing.
16:18Matt Singer:That's the part that's a little bit weird. Now, I like the movie too. I mean I didn't do backflips. Like I'm going to be real honest, which is a rarity for me. when I go to the movies I really hate to have to go to the bathroom during the movie because I don't want to miss anything and I get a little crazy but in this one I really really did have to pee but I just blazed through it I just said no no I can do it and I was in a lot of pain toward the end but I stayed with it if I didn't care about the movie I would have just gone it is a long motion picture as well it's not short so I missed the little post credits thing but that's okay but that's fine it wasn't much i read i read about it ironically that was animated oh was it really yes i still haven't seen it i had to go i had to go to like one of the i had to go to like collider.com and say that in you know the minute the movie ended like was there a post-credit sequence and they were at the urinal reading collider.com all right anyway so uh so
17:18Jordan Hoffman:this is the thing it why is this movie doing so well that is a very good question and it's one that I've been thinking about because, well, the reason I'm somewhat befuddled is really two main reasons. One is, you know, I keep hearing how, oh, these, Marvel's dead. Marvel is over. DC is over. Nobody cares anymore. These movies, you know, they had their time. And now we're past it. We're moving into a new era, a new era of original films and movies made by 20-year-olds who made things on YouTube. Obsessions and obsessions. Which I've liked those movies. I don't have a problem with that. I mean, that sounds kind of honestly like if that was the main thing Hollywood made for a year or two, I would be very excited about that to see what they made.
18:01Jordan Hoffman:And this flies in the face of all of that because this movie is gigantic. It's as bigger, bigger than any of these movies, including the Avengers and all these huge, huge blockbusters. and that kind of brings me to the second reason I'm so shocked is that I would have thought no Spider-Man movie could have topped the last movie certainly financially because it had all of the Spider-Men and it was this big fan service-y and I say this as a fan it was a huge fan service-y you know circle you know what just totally catering to you know every dream of oh what would happen if all the Spider-Men hung out together That would be so exciting.
18:42Jordan Hoffman:And it was exciting, I suppose. Yeah. And so it's like, how do you top that in a movie that doesn't have the other Spider-Men? Right.
18:50Matt Singer:Well, I have one. You have a theory? Well, no, this is not a theory. This is a fact about the money. This is not about the creative aspects of the new film. That last one, the third one, never opened in China. China is a little bit weird about what they let in. And they have a cap. And the third Holland Spider-Man film never made it to China. I see. So the new one did. And it's already done well there. So that might explain some of the financial. That could explain some of it.
19:18Jordan Hoffman:But that doesn't explain why it's doing so well like in the United States and all over the world. And I guess my theory right now is that, one, people really do like Tom Holland in this character. They like Zendaya. You know, it has this movie is has them kind of at what seems like their peak. You know, they're huge stars and I'm seeing them everywhere. They're they're working their butts off to promote it. And, you know, and they're married in real life, married and they're yeah, they're and they're a power couple. And, you know, the movie lets you see them together. You know, they're both in the just in the Odyssey, but they didn't really have any any scenes together.
19:58Jordan Hoffman:So here you kind of get the, you know, the fun metatextual element of watching this real life couple as a couple in the film. But I don't know. I guess I think it is really just that what they did do a good job of suggesting in the trailers, in the marketing, and it's true of the movie, is just like you don't need to know nothing about this. It's Spider-Man. You know, like there's no multiverse. There's – who even cares what the villain is? that they didn't really even have a main villain in the commercials.
20:30Matt Singer:It's kind of a fake out. Here's what I thought, because Spider-Man's going through his problems. He has too much arachnid DNA within him, which is a problem we could all have. I thought that it was going to be revealed that there was some bad guy manipulating that, but it wasn't. It was just he had an imbalance.
20:52Jordan Hoffman:Right, it's a metaphorical imbalance. as so many things in Spider-Man are. Yes, he's...
20:58Matt Singer:And a sexual imbalance? Let's be honest. He's a young man. Spider-Man is supposed to be 22, 23, college age, and he's not dating anybody. He's got to let that all out.
21:08Jordan Hoffman:Only the listeners could see how wide your eyes got when you said sexual imbalance. We really should be videotaping this podcast.
21:16Matt Singer:Tom Holland is 30 years old and Zendaya is 29. They're not kids. They look really young.
21:20Jordan Hoffman:No, he still looks pretty young. I would say, yes, he's still convincing. He is younger. They're both younger looking than the actors who did the previous set where by the third movie, Tobey Maguire did not look like a young grad student at Empire State University. And Andrew Garfield in the first movie, he has kind of – I always say it looks like he's like 90210 teenager in the first movie. And he's so handsome and he's got beautiful hair. It's like what if Dylan Walsh from 90210 became Spider-Man? He's smoldering. He's gorgeous. it's not my vibe
21:56Matt Singer:so the thing is these characters are naturally looking very young unless they're like I don't know drinking adrenochrome all evening but they look very young so they're going to be making these movies forever basically I mean the box office of this
22:10Jordan Hoffman:movie I would say all the guarantees they make at least one more of these they take a long time to get all the schedules and the stars aligned so I wouldn't bet on more than one for sure but for sure how could they not make another one after this There's money at stake. That's right.
22:25Matt Singer:You know, Ned will look 45, but the rest of the other two will still look 19 forever. So that'll be it. That'll be funny.
22:31Jordan Hoffman:It's pretty clear that, you know, and this is a well-known fact, is that Sony, to keep that Spider-Man license, which they will obviously never let go, because for sure, as this movie proves, these movies are the only thing left in Hollywood that is guaranteed to make money every single time. Yeah. They have to make a new one every certain amount of years. I don't know the exact number, but it's like the contract hinges on every certain number of years. You must put a new movie into development or you eventually lose the license. It reverts back to Marvel and Disney. And so that means they cannot ever not make one, which is why there will be a fifth one with Tom Holland.
23:15Jordan Hoffman:And that's why there is the Amazing Spider-Man is they were trying for several years to make Spider-Man 4 with Sam Raimi. and Tobey Maguire, and it fell apart, and it wasn't going to happen. And they're like, we got to do something. And it's like, what can we do quickly? It's like, well, we could just make another origin story, and we could just, you know, and we could basically remake the first Spider-Man. And so that is essentially how that happened.
23:39Matt Singer:But what's smart is that Sony hires Marvel as a production unit to make the film. Well, they didn't really used to.
23:45Jordan Hoffman:Now they do, yes. The Tom Holland ones are made in conjunction with Marvel. Kevin Feige produces them.
23:51Matt Singer:Yeah, there's so much money that everybody's happy.
23:54Jordan Hoffman:And that's how they can put in Mark Ruffalo, and they can put in John Bernthal as the Punisher. And so they're more Marvel-y than the previous ones.
24:03Matt Singer:Can they make a Flash Thompson movie? Just all Flash? Do you think that would ever work? No. If they had to? No.
24:09Jordan Hoffman:I mean, look, would you put it past them, though? They made a Madame Web movie. They made a Kraven the Hunter movie. I didn't even see that. I do remember that existed. It was horrible. It was absolutely awful.
24:22Matt Singer:Aaron Taylor Johnson Aaron Taylor Johnson
24:25Jordan Hoffman:I mean we have already talked way too long about Spider-Man but this is one of the fascinating things about these movies right now is that the Spider-Man movies are all good, the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies they're very entertaining and partly they are so good because they're made with Marvel and they have the main Marvel characters, you can throw in a Punisher, you can throw in a Hulk
24:49Matt Singer:Florence Pugh also
24:50Jordan Hoffman:whatever her name is That's right. You can put in those little – and it's not – it doesn't make them great because they have Marvel characters in them. They have the juice. They have the Marvel. They feel authentic. They understand the characters. They're really good. The problem is because Tom Holland is so firmly ensconced in the real, quote-unquote, Marvel universe, he can't hang out with these side characters who are only in the Sony universe. and so and but Sony has you know they want to make as much money as they can yeah they have
25:26Matt Singer:this license to make legally he can't he could like Kraven the hunter could not be in this movie like contractually I think or just they realize they're gonna denigrate I'm not a legal lawyer
25:36Jordan Hoffman:but yeah I'm pretty sure Kraven the hunter they could work out a deal where Kraven the hunter could show up in a Spider-Man movie sure I guess they would they would have to do a deal but right almost no way in hell it in mephisto's hometown that that spider-man is going to show up in craven the hunter sure that would cross the streams that would be verboten and if craven were
26:02Matt Singer:to be in a spider-man movie it can't be the same scene that john bernthal's the punisher is in because that's too comp that's like yeah it's too complicated well i mean they did throw in
26:12Jordan Hoffman:So Michael Keaton's, Michael Keaton's vulture was in Spider-Man Homecoming. And then they threw him into Morbius. Remember Morbius? Wait, Michael Keaton was in Marvel?
26:25Matt Singer:I thought he was Batman. He's Batman and he's in a Marvel movie. All right. Let's, because my head's starting to hurt. Let me just conclude very quickly. This is important. What I said before about the art of animation was primarily a joke. It wasn't a joke. He really believes this. He said this to me.
26:44Jordan Hoffman:He has said this to me off air. He said this to me in private chats.
26:49Matt Singer:Never, never. I would like to just smooth things out with the listeners. No, he wouldn't. Take it with the greatest salt. But it is true that I have not seen the Spider-Verse movies. Maybe I should. Maybe I would like them. Maybe I should watch them. I'm shocked. I'm shocked and appalled. Spiders have three life cycles. When between cycles, it can leave the spider vulnerable to threats. This is Jacob Goldstein from What's Your Problem? Running a business is hard enough. Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies are also on Disney +, as is Across the Spider-Verse, which I would like to see. But Into the Spider-Verse, that one's on Netflix. So you answered your question of where you could watch it. It's always got to be a little bit more complicated, but that's what's great. What do you have as a Rexeg for just connected in some way to into this? What the movie is on? Brand new day. Spider-Man brand new day. Do you have a.
31:02Jordan Hoffman:Are you reading the newspaper while we're doing this? What's happening right now?
31:05Matt Singer:I forgot the name of the movie. We take one week off.
31:08Jordan Hoffman:You have no memory of what the show does.
31:10Matt Singer:Do you have a Rexeg for Spider-Man colon brand new day?
31:14Jordan Hoffman:Of course I do.
31:15Matt Singer:Of course I do.
31:16Jordan Hoffman:Rexeg. We're going to do the rec seg. Yeah, yeah. The recommendation segment. Yeah, yeah, yeah. In honor of Spider-Man, we're going to recommend some movies here. I thought it would be too gauche to recommend a Spider-Man movie. We talked about most of them. So I thought I would recommend a superhero movie from prior to the late 2000s boom that, if you believe the box office totals of Brand New Day, we are still living in, apparently. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. The one that I decided to select is both a tremendous time capsule of a very shabby period, frankly, in the history of comic book movies. It is also a pretty fun, swashbuckling pulp adventure.
32:05Jordan Hoffman:It is. Gosh, wait, hold on. It is. I don't know. What could it be? It could be and is The Phantom from 1996, directed by Simon Pinser. This is currently streaming on Pluto. Evil is a fact. We shall succeed where they have failed. Drax is on a quest for a supernatural power. They know far too much. And courage. Stop them. But the only one who can is a phantom. Now, The Phantom only exists, the film, I'm saying, only exists because of the success of the Tim Burton Batman franchise of the late 80s and early 90s. And when those movies hit, Hollywood's inexplicable reaction was not to say, wow, people like these movies.
32:59Jordan Hoffman:We should make more DC movies. We should take other DC heroes. Right. And, you know, Green Lantern, The Flash, The Justice League. No, that's not what they said. They said, hey, we should make a bunch of movies that are based on early pulp and comic strip heroes that helped inspire and were contemporaries of Batman and could be set in vaguely period set locales and locations and time periods just like it. Don't ask me why. It's one of the dumbest and strangest things that ever happened.
33:33Matt Singer:probably because the rights were cheap
33:36Jordan Hoffman:maybe that is why but we got Dick Tracy with Warren Beatty we got The Shadow with Alec Baldwin eventually we got The Mask of Zorro with Antonio Banderas a really good movie but it still counts and we did also get The Phantom The Phantom aka The Ghost Who Walks is a character created by I guess other ghosts they take the train. I don't know, but that's his nickname. He was created by Lee Falk in 1936, which means the character was 60 years old when they made this movie. Wow. And when the Phantom comes up online today, which is not often, it is usually to make fun of how Billy Zane looked in his purple costume, which is
34:25Matt Singer:a very faithful translation
34:28Jordan Hoffman:of the character from the comic strips. or to make fun of the movie's tagline. Jordan, do you know the tagline?
34:39Matt Singer:Of course. Of course I know the tagline. I will let you say it. What is the tagline? I live and die by the tagline. When I encounter nefarious people, when I encounter those who are up to no good, what do I do? What do you do? I slam evil. That's correct. Slam evil. That's what it says. By the way, a slam evil sounds like a type of worm that grows. Yes.
35:04Jordan Hoffman:You would shove into Walter Koenig's ear. Put this slam evil inside him and control his mind.
35:12Matt Singer:I can't grow tomatoes because my garden is just overrun by slam evils. Right. Slam evil is what you do when you are the phantom and you want to save the day. You're going to slam some evil.
35:23Jordan Hoffman:The poster had, in two words, with an exclamation point, slam evil. A big purple poster. Something that he does not do and does not come up in the film, but that's okay. The movie itself, that aside, is a nice little B movie. It has some very good practical stunt work, which we don't tend to see in these sorts of movies anymore. No, no. It has a very charming and very purple Billy Zane as the Phantom. He's quite good in the movie, actually. And then do you remember, Jordan, who the beautiful young ingenue in this movie is? Do you know? Gosh. Do you remember? No. Someone who went on to quite a career.
36:05Jordan Hoffman:This was one of her earliest American productions.
36:08Matt Singer:I'm picturing a Keira Knightley-esque gal, but she would have been too young.
36:12Jordan Hoffman:It is not her. Is it a Rachel Vise or somebody like that? I think you're getting a little closer, but I will tell you, it is Catherine Zeta-Jones. Oh. A very young pre-entrapment, pre-everything. This is one of her first American productions, at least. Wow. Catherine Zeta-Jones, she plays like this amoral pirate in the film. And I am sure if I showed a picture of her in The Phantom to Jordan, he would not be able to restrain himself from making three stooges noises. While his face turned into a Tex Avery cartoon.
36:47Matt Singer:Catherine Zeta-Jones, Christy Swanson, Treat Williams as Xander Drax.
36:52Jordan Hoffman:Yes, he's the villain. Treat Williams as the villain. Xander Drax. He's quite good as a big mushroom. Mustache twirling villain. Yeah. Wow. I got to rewatch the Phantom. I have seen it. I didn't rewatch it for this podcast, but I have seen it many times. And I rewatched it a couple of years ago. It is a very charming B movie. It is not an A plus movie in any sense of the word.
37:16Matt Singer:I'm looking, by the way, at the director's Simon.
37:19Jordan Hoffman:Simon Winzer. Simon Winzer. I think I said Simon Pinser. I think I was thinking of a temporal Pinser movement.
37:25Matt Singer:Temporal Pinser. My apologies. He's actually done some good stuff. I mean, probably the biggest feather in his cap is he did the 1989 TV adaptation of Lonesome Dove. Lonesome Dove, yes. Which was a very, very respected thing. And then he also did. He did Free Willy, which was a very successful movie. Yeah. Laugh all you want.
37:44Jordan Hoffman:That movie was a gigantic hit.
37:46Matt Singer:He did the 1997 TV version of The Flash, which is pretty good in its way. Yeah, Free Willy made a boatload of money. He did Daryl, D period, A period, R period. Remember that movie? I know the title. I've never seen Daryl. But then he did some real junk. He did Harley Davidson and The Marlboro Man, one of the world's worst movies. Lightning Jack. Credit, Operation Dumbo Drop, a masterpiece. Is that one a masterpiece? piece i haven't seen that one either ah danny glover and ray liotta and they have to get an
38:19Jordan Hoffman:elephant into they gotta drop a dumbo i get it i get it so that's simon wincer's filmography but this is clearly the filet of the entire oeuvre i'm not crazy about how it ends it has you know like eventually as many of these movies of this period did they had to like introduce more sci-fi elements or at least kind of like fantasy elements. There's like a laser battle with skulls. It's very stupid.
38:46Matt Singer:They're on an island. They're running around on an island.
38:48Jordan Hoffman:They are running around on an island. And it is probably you know, I bet there was a better version that they cut down into what they released. But the Phantom has two sidekicks. One is a wolf. One is a horse. And they can talk to each other with barks and grunts. I'm sorry. That's a winner in my book ten times out of ten. That's slamming a lot of evil.
39:08Matt Singer:That's right. So that's the
39:09Jordan Hoffman:phantom it's a it's it is a good film it is streaming on pluto jordan what is what is your
39:15Matt Singer:recommendation much to say i well i was really thinking as we discussed joking around a moment ago why is this new brand new day why is it making so much money and in all sincerity i think the thing that people are really responding to is the three-way friendship between peter parker mj and ned and even though it's a romantic relationship between peter and mj they are still best they're great friends yes and the three of them are and in fact the last shot of the movie is not with mj it's with ned which i find very touching it's like he wants to be with his best buddy it's a very nice moment i agree yeah it's a nice moment so i'm thinking about what are some great movies about young adult friendships these are not kids they're in they're just out of college he just graduated from mit and he's building apps and whatnot ned is and i was thinking and thinking and it just like what the big one is the most obvious one.
40:08Matt Singer:It's kind of a famous movie, but there's a potential that some people haven't seen. And if they haven't, they should watch it immediately. 1979's Breaking Away. Ah. It's a masterpiece. Yeah. It is a great movie about young. They're not kids anymore. They're out of high school. That's the problem. They're out of high school and they're aimless. They have nowhere to go. They live in a college town, but they're not going to college. They are the townies. and they find camaraderie in their hatred of college kids. Now they find camaraderie through sports. They become, it's a bike racing movie. And of course, this is one of the earliest films with the young Dennis Quaid.
40:46Matt Singer:He plays the jock. He's not the main character. The main character is played by an actor by the name of Christopher something or other. And a little Jackie Earl Haley is in it too. and the guy who was also in Diner Stern. Is that his name? If only there were places you could look these names up
41:07Jordan Hoffman:before you talked about them, Jordan. 20th Century Fox presents Breaking Away, the story of four guys in imminent danger of turning 20. All right! How you doing, guys? Well, we're a little disturbed by the developments in the Middle East.
41:25Matt Singer:who refuse to give up immaturity without a fight.
41:29Jordan Hoffman:Smart move, Shorty.
41:32Matt Singer:Would anybody be listening to a film spotting podcast without having seen Breaking Away?
41:37Jordan Hoffman:I'm guessing a lot of people have not seen Breaking Away. It's a masterpiece. Even the very wise film spotting listenership, I'm guaranteeing you at least one out of every two of them has not seen Breaking Away.
41:49Matt Singer:Okay, fair enough. It's one of the most heartwarming movies you'll ever see. Isn't that fair to say, Matt Singer? It's a great movie. It's a great movie.
41:56Jordan Hoffman:It's, I mean, if we wanted, Peter Yates, another very good director.
42:00Matt Singer:Yeah.
42:00Jordan Hoffman:Directed some of my favorites. He directed The Hot Rock, which I think we talked about on an episode of the podcast. He also did another one of my favorite movies, The Friends of Eddie Coyle. Those are much, those are, I mean, The Hot Rock is kind of about male friendship too, actually. But Friends of Eddie Coyle, contrary to the title, maybe not about a heartwarming tale of friendship. But yes, this is a, it's a lovely film. I love this. this is a great recommendation. This is a very kudos to you for thinking a little out of the box. This is a perfect, a perfect rex egg choice.
42:33Matt Singer:Once in a while, I'll take the foot out of my mouth and say something intelligent. It was written by a fellow by the name of Steve Tessich, who was a playwright as well. And it's really got that. It's, it's, it's polished as hell. It actually was nominated for best picture. I didn't even know that it was nominated for best picture. Peter Yates was nominated for best director, Barbara Barry, who plays the main kid's mom. She was nominated for best supporting actress, Weirdly, Paul Dooley, who plays the dad, he's a used car salesman. Very funny. He was not nominated for Best Supporting Actor. But the screenplay won Best Screenplay.
43:05Matt Singer:Steve Tesich, the author, so good for him. Dennis Christopher is the name of the – he's kind of the Mark Hamill-esque main character. And I'm surprised they didn't get Mark Hamill, frankly. I mean, he's kind of – they probably would try to and couldn't get him. He's kind of a Mark Hamill clone. But it's just a sweet little movie about kids growing up in Nowheresville, Indiana, and a bunch of rich snobs. It kind of plays into a little bit of the snobs versus slobs, animal house kind of thing because there's the college kids. But it's very sweet. It was that era for that sort of thing.
43:44Jordan Hoffman:And if people want to watch it, they will have to rent it currently.
43:47Matt Singer:That one you've got to pay, unfortunately. That one's a$3.99 to my despair, but it's worth the$3.99 if you haven't seen it. Breaking away. Somewhere between growing up and settling down. It happens to all of us.
44:04Jordan Hoffman:Okay, should we get to our Rex Egg for one of our listeners? Yeah, let's do that. I actually don't know if you picked the same one as me this week. We've gotten a bunch. Obviously, we took a week off, so we've had a few extras. But mine, should I go first here? Yeah, go for it. So the one that I selected was from listener Don. Don writes, hi, do you have any recommendations that are in Italian that I could watch with my husband? And then in parentheses, nothing too sentimental. No, this example is a TV show, not a movie, but he seems to be doing okay with Detective Hole or Hul, presumably in Norwegian.
44:45Jordan Hoffman:I'm learning Italian, which is why I'm singling this language out. We have Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney, Peacock, maybe others. I wouldn't restrict based on that. And that is from Dawn. Did you do this one too, Jordan, or just me? No, no, I didn't. I didn't.
45:00Matt Singer:So Dawn wants something that is Italian, which is big. I mean, a lot of Italian movies, but not sentimental. Right, which a lot of, that's a couple of the ones that I thought, the big ones. Yeah, Fellini's Amaracord is out. Yes, exactly. That would not get into that. That is too sentimental. So what do you got?
45:17Jordan Hoffman:I looked at some of these services that Dawn uses, and I tried to see what could I find that would be an unsentimental Italian movie. And boy, did I find one. It was one that I honestly hadn't seen before, but I watched it after I don't even know how I found it, browsing around. But this, I think, fits the bill. I started digging on Amazon specifically, and the one that I ended up watching that is available on Prime Video is the film Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion.
45:53Matt Singer:What the hell movie is this?
45:55Jordan Hoffman:This is a 1970 film directed by Elio Petri. And I would describe it as kind of a reverse Hitchcock movie. Instead of a man who has been wrongfully accused of a crime who is trying to wriggle free of suspicion, a homicide detective murders his mistress. And then he deliberately leaves clues to see if anyone who works for him is smart enough to solve the crime while he is kind of simultaneously doing whatever he can to direct suspicion onto other people. most a couple of reasons why he does this one he's pure evil he's like a sociopath he's a madman but also he is kind of testing how powerful he is in the process of becoming because over the course of the movie he gets a new promotion he is now the head of the political investigations bureau and in the middle of this movie and the investigation into this murder he gives this fiery and very fascist speech to the staff of like the police bureau to the media where he basically says that people who protest the government are criminals by another name that he says among other things quote up until yesterday i was catching murderers and fairly good at it it's significant that a man like myself was chosen in a time like this to direct the political division.
47:30Jordan Hoffman:Consider the reason they singled me out. The difference between criminal and political acts is dwindling more and more these days. It has almost disappeared. So unfortunately, this 55-year-old movie, it might feel a little relevant today. It seems like perfect fodder for an American remake, actually. And looking on Wikipedia, I guess several people have tried to make one over the years. It never happened. Paul Schrader tried for a while. That actually sounds like a nice match to me of director and subject matter. This is a very dark satire. The lead actor, who I was not familiar with, is terrific.
48:11Jordan Hoffman:I'm not going to attempt to say his name because I would embarrass myself. I don't want to do that. But he is wonderful in this movie. He's terrifying. He has the facade of this handsome, composed politician. But of course, you know, as he's pointing fingers at others, he is the true monster. And I thought this was a really, really good movie. I really enjoyed it. So it is Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion. It's streaming on Prime Video in Italian. And I hope I hope it works for Dawn and her husband.
48:44Matt Singer:Wow. Very cool. I'd like to hear back from Dawn if she decides to watch it and what her take is. it is beloved by many critics, but it has escaped me. You can't see them all. And this is one that I haven't seen. So I'm excited. All right. What's your recommendation for a listener this week, Jordan? We got a great email from a fella by the name of Julio. And Julio says the following, Leo Carax. I don't know. How do you pronounce? I always say Leo's Carax. Carax. Leo's Carax. Leo's Carax's Holy Motors is one of those movies that blew my mind the first time I watched it. and it's remained one of my favorites ever since.
49:22Matt Singer:I like that movie a lot too. And I know Matt Singer, you love that movie. One of my favorite movies. You said that was your favorite movie of the year that it came out. I believe so. We watched it side by side when we first saw it together. Holy Motors is one of my favorite movies when I watched it and it's remained one of my favorites ever since. It's inventive, fascinating, it's big swings, open to different interpretations and deeply moving. I agree. I want more movies like that. Who doesn't? But then he throws in, worth mentioning, I watched Leo Carax's most recent film, Annette, and hated it.
49:52Matt Singer:Julio, you and I are simpatico, because I did not care for Annette either. And that was, did you like Annette, Matt Singer? Not as much as Holy Motors, but I liked it, yes. You liked it? Producer Sam, did you like Annette, or do you like Julio, and I think that movie is very annoying? I loved it. It was my second favorite movie of that year. Wow. I loved Annette. Oh, my God. I've offended Sam, the worst person of all to offend. And he's in charge of making me sound good. And now I've put my foot in my mouth. All right, anyway. So anyway, no restrictions on platforms. I have access to all the big ones.
50:24Matt Singer:Give me a movie, he says. Now, real quick, Holy Motors is not the world's most famous film. It's in French. It came out in 2012. And it's about, gosh, what is it about? That's the thing. It is open to interpretation. But I think most people will agree it is about, just if you follow it on a base level, It's about a guy who roams around the city and he puts on different personas depending on the scene. So in a way, it's just a way to stretch together a bunch of skits. But it's also commentary about, you know, facades of society. It's a commentary about acting. It's a commentary about filmmaking.
51:02Matt Singer:And it's got some – it's really quite extraordinary and surreal at times and funny and scary and everything. It's a big hodgepodge. Now, what I'm about to say when our friend Julio listens to this, he will either get down on his knees and thank me and say, oh my God, I never knew. Or he will say, no, duh. Of course I knew that. So I don't know. But I'm going to roll the dice and I hope I'm going to help Julio out. One of the sequences in this film is when our main character, who's played by Denis Levant, and he is in all of the Caraxes films. He's on The Lovers on the Bridge and all the others.
51:42Matt Singer:One of the personas is he plays like a madman. His name is Monsieur Mare, Mr. Shit. And he is like a beast who emerges from the sewers and just runs around and is crazy and just assaults people. And it's just like, I'm just a gibbering lunatic. Now, prior to the release of Holy Motors, there was a film called Tokyo with an exclamation mark at the end. Matt Singer, do you know about Tokyo? Yes. Okay. Tokyo is an omnibus film. This is something that happens more in Europe and more back in the day when three directors come together and say, we're going to make three short films, slap them together.
52:26Matt Singer:And they're vaguely related. Very famously, New York stories from the late 80s was Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, and Francis Ford Coppola. And the only connection is that all three of these stories are set in New York City. Tokyo was three directors, all set in Tokyo. Michel Gondry, Bong Joon-ho, and it's Leo Correx, Leos Correx, however he pronounces his name. The Michel Gondry one is very cute. It's about a couple in Tokyo, and it's a young woman and a young man, and the young man is becoming famous. And as he's becoming famous, the young woman starts to feel like a piece of furniture, and she literally becomes a chair.
53:07Matt Singer:She transforms into a chair. It's kind of cool. The Bong one is about a guy who's like an introvert, and he never leaves his apartment, and he falls in love with the woman who delivers pizza to him. the one in the middle by Kura is this character Mr. Merid it's the crazy Denis Lavon with with weird contacts in and a crazy wig and a green suit flopping around Tokyo acting like a maniac so if you like that sequence in uh Holy Motors it's a 32 minute version of that story set in Tokyo with more of a three-act arc to it. He goes on trial and whatnot, and it's pretty incredible. So that is my recommendation.
53:55Matt Singer:The movie as a whole is good. There are three very good short films by three top-notch directors. But if you're into Holy Motors and you wish there was a side quill to Holy Motors, there is, and not a lot of people know about it. And here's the punchline to all the listeners, all the listeners, this movie, Tokyo, which is a rarity, is available pretty much everywhere. I know that it's on our favorites, Tubi and Pluto. That's the best part. It's for free. But it's also on Amazon Prime and it's on Canopy also, which is a great service if you have a library card. You get like 12 free rentals a month and this can be one of your free rentals.
54:37Matt Singer:So you could do it with ads on Tubi or Pluto. You can watch it on Amazon. or you could watch it on Canopy. It's all about Tokyo. It's this weird little movie that not many people remember. And now is your opportunity to see it.
54:50Jordan Hoffman:All right, great. So let's recap the Rex Egg this week. We have The Phantom on Pluto. We have Breaking Away on VOD. 58:16Jordan Hoffman:Okay, it's time for a game. Sam, producer Sam is here. And I believe I'm, I'm, well, for many weeks we would be, oh, Jordan always wins. I believe I'm on a winning streak right now. You're on a roll. I've lost three in a row. I've won three games in a row, and now we're doing a game. Wait, Matt. I want to correct the record. Jordan hosted last time. I won. Oh. I was the winner. But Jordan has lost like four times in a row. He's lost four in a row.
58:44Matt Singer:No, I've lost three. I lost three in a row, and then I hosted. He's lost 16 episodes in a row. We're going to have to go back and actually do a leaderboard. We do need to. We do need to have an actual. Is there a film spotting intern we can commission to go back and try to find the winners? We do. I think somebody wrote in and did suggest like the winner should host next time. Then we would never have consecutive winners and we would never have consecutive hosts. It's probably makes the most sense. That was a good note. It's a good note. We did read that email, whoever sent it, and we thank you.
59:15Matt Singer:And we may not listen to you, but it was a good idea. But in fact, we are listening to you now because I did win last game and now I am hosting. Right. So this game is, as you mentioned at the top of the show, it's about Spider-Man villains, Spider-Man movie villains. This does, yes, play into Matt's strengths a little bit, but there are two parts to this. One part is knowing your Spider-Man movie villains. The other part will be the best picture nominated films, those actors who played the villains or who voiced the villains appear. This is not going to be to my strength. Exactly. But half of it is and half of it is not.
59:56We'll see.
59:57Jordan Hoffman:I don't like this. I thought I was in for a real gimme this week. I was all excited. So the name of this game is called A Vile Menagerie. I was mistaken. I was kind of like, they're all kind of animals, right? There's lizards and octopi and all kinds of stuff. But you get to goblins as well. So whatever. They're not animal vegetables and minerals, all of them, I guess. But multiple opportunities to turn points, and I'm going to try to keep this a little more concise. So we'll do seven villains, okay? You're going to get a point just by naming a villain. You're going to get a point when you name the actor who plays the villain, or voices the villain.
1:00:36You're going to get a point for naming the film. These are all gimmies. These are softballs.
1:00:41Matt Singer:Right. So it's film, it's the actor is someone who was in a movie that was nominated for Best Picture? You're going to name a Spider-Man villain. You're going to name the actor who played that villain. You're going to name the movie that villain appeared in. And then you will tell me or you will simply guess how many best picture nominated films you think that actor has appeared in. Best picture nominated films. How many? Gosh. Oh, boy. This is going to be interesting. And then you will have to name at least one of them, but as many as you can. because then there will be a chance for the other person to steal if they know more.
1:01:20All right? Do we get a point per movie? You're going to get a point for... I'm sweating already. I'm already nervous and sweating. So you're going to get a point for a movie. Let's say some actor's been in five Best Picture nominated films. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You can name two, let's say. Yeah. That's two points. But if the other person can name one more, they get all the points. What? No, they get all the points for the nominated films. all the best pictures.
1:01:45Matt Singer:Okay. It's not true. It's like Family Feud. You're stealing points. There's the potential for somebody to get 300 points in this game. Easily. This is very exciting. Easily. We'll just see how this goes. All right. It's always - This is like the NBA. It's a very high point game. I like it. Okay. So we're going to start with you, Jordan. All you have to do - So I'm going to try to keep track. We're going to do seven villains. There's more than that, of course. Yeah. And I am outraged that you have not seen into or across the Sprite-iverse their masterpieces. You got to see that. I should watch them.
1:02:14Matt Singer:I'm a bad person. I'm going to watch them. Okay, name a Spider-Man villain. Go ahead. I'm going to give you a point. Oh, I start. Okay. Yeah, just name a Spider-Man movie villain. The Green Goblin. Very good. Spider-Man. Now name the actor who played the Green Goblin. Willem Dafoe. That's two points. Yeah, great. Name one of the films. He's in Spider-Man. He's in Spider-Man. That's three points. Now. Yeah, yes. Now name. How many Best Picture nominated films? Well, that's actually a good question. Matt, pay attention because you will have a chance to steal here too. Gosh, I actually don't. How many Best Picture nominated films has actor Willem Dafoe been in?
1:02:54Four? Okay, you're guessing four. Matt, you have a chance to guess as well. The closest has a chance to steal here.
1:03:02Jordan Hoffman:I can guess a different number, you're saying? You can guess a different number, and if you're closer, then you will get to this point. I'm just going to let Jordan guess, because I'm not good at Oscar trivia. All right. I'm more of a Spider-Man fan myself. Okay, you're saying four then, Jordan. I say four. Okay, so you can just get the point because Matt's not going to even show. That's four points. Okay, and now I have to name - Willem Dafoe has been, you just need to name one, but I will tell you, Willem Dafoe has been in eight films nominated for Best Picture.
1:03:38Matt Singer:Okay, I'm going to name some of these movies right now. Okay, do as many as you can. The first one is Platoon. Correct. Okay, another one that Willem Dafoe was in that was nominated for Best Picture is The Florida Project? not nominated unfortunately should have been am I done you're done you're out it's over Matt if you can name one you get a point for the platoon and you get a point for the one you name can you name one more Willem Dafoe best picture nominated film I don't know that I can the only one I thought of
1:04:11Jordan Hoffman:was platoon there are eight I know I'm thinking I'm thinking oh was he wait okay wait I think I have one I think I have one. All right. Was he in, and I hope it was nominated. I might be wrong. Was he in the Grand Budapest Hotel? He was, and it was nominated for Best Picture. Yes, wow. Very good. Okay, so that's two points for Matt. Do you want me to list the other ones? Yes, please. Let's see. Are we done guessing? Yeah. Yeah, I'm curious. So I'll go Chronological Order, Platoon, Best Picture winner.
1:04:40Matt Singer:Mm-hmm. Mississippi Burning. Oh, yeah. Good movie, yeah. Born on the 4th of July. Oh, right. The English Patient. I honestly do not remember him being in Born on the Fourth of July. I think he was in Mexico, the Mexico scene. Maybe I remember. I should see it again. He was in The Aviator. Who was he in The Aviator? Roland Sweet, the character name, it doesn't really remember. Boy, I don't remember him in that one. He was in the Grand Punipose Hotel. He was in Nightmare Alley. Nightmare Alley. I like that movie. I don't remember him being in that either. I liked it. You will remember that he was in Poor Things, which was Best Picture nominated.
1:05:16Matt Singer:Yes. Okay.
1:05:17Jordan Hoffman:what a strange for what a great career what a strange batch of movies that is incredible and
1:05:23Matt Singer:honestly i think florida project is probably the best of the bunch it's better than it's better than a bunch of the ones that we just mentioned i would give you that right i mean i like several of those movies yes yeah you're right okay all right so i can say two okay i can say any any
1:05:39Jordan Hoffman:spider-man villain from any of the movies that's right you can think strategically about i know That's the thing. The next time Jordan's going, I need to be strategic about this and think about who I could name. But I guess in this case, I will mention, just because why not, I'll say Mysterio. Okay. Which is Jake Gyllenhaal. Yes. From Spider-Man Far From Home. That's correct. But then now I have to say, I think he's been in a certain number of Oscar-nominated Best Picture movies. How many Best Picture? Boy, I have no idea. No earthly idea. Well, we got for sure, without a doubt, he was nominated.
1:06:21Jordan Hoffman:I know that the Prince of Persia, the Sands of Time was one best picture. And was that 2012, 2013? I don't know. I'm going to say three. Okay. What about you, Jordan? I think he was only in two. So Jordan is going to steal the point because he was only in one. Oh, wow.
1:06:43Matt Singer:What? But you have to name the film. Now you've got to name it. Of course I know it's Brokeback Mountain. Brokeback Mountain is correct. You get the point. Zodiac was not nominated for Best Picture. This was in the five Best Picture nominees era. 2007 is one of the best years. Yeah, exactly. And no, 2007 is totally stacked. So there are surprises here with films that weren't nominated, but I do think a lot of it is that pre-2010 is when we started to get 10? Yeah, it was after Dark Knight. It was after Dark Knight. was the first one yeah yeah okay okay so mysterio's off the board as is the green goblin um it is currently six to four jordan oh based on my scoring system oh my gosh now i'm gonna i'm gonna knock everybody out of the park here because i i don't know how i know this but i do i am going to say the rhinoceros rhino okay rhino also known by his friends as rhino and rhino is played by Paul Giamatti.
1:07:41Matt Singer:Correct. And he was in the Amazing Spider-Man 2 for two seconds. That's correct. It was like a joke at the end that the rhino shows up. Now I have to tell you how many Paul Giamatti movies were nominated for Best Picture. The real answer should be like a thousand. It should be. You're absolutely right. But I believe the answer is merely two. Two Paul Giamatti movies have been nominated for Best Picture. Okay, so Matt Singer, you have a chance if you want to guess a number you could guess the number no i i just like jordan
1:08:14Jordan Hoffman:get i like to see jordan flounder and and flop around so just let him just let him try it's okay let's see if he can i think i know all you have to do is name one he only has to name one but he said two why does he only have to name one well because he he just that's all he needs that's that's how the game works i'm required i'm required to name one but if i can name more
1:08:37Matt Singer:than one, I achieve greatness. That's right. So the answer to this question is, I think there are two, and I think the two movies are as follows. Sideways, which was nominated for Best Picture, and also the recent The Holdovers, which was also nominated for Best Picture. I think those are the only two. Is that correct?
1:08:55Jordan Hoffman:And the Tim Burton Planet of the Apes was also nominated for sure. So Giamatti has appeared in four Best Picture nominees, which is closer to a thousand than two. but so Matt Singer all you have to do is name one other of those best picture nominees planet of the apes let me let me any other I'm trying to think what I don't think the hawk is dying was nominated um I uh one that you will never think of one I I was the first actual one I thought of after sideways I'm thinking of very good movies that are worthy of consideration that are too small to be one of them i i don't think this was actually nominated but we this this episode is already going too long so i'm just gonna throw out american splendor again should have been but wasn't yeah this is the best okay go ahead jordan yeah i bet you it's something that
1:09:50Matt Singer:like nobody thinks about like a movie like seabiscuit wasn't he in seabiscuit i don't know if he was the one i thought of that wasn't nominated was like cinderella man uh which was not nominated. Right. But this is a Best Picture winner, actually, the one you're not thinking of. I just think this scene is so vivid to me. He's only in the movie very briefly, but it's 12 Years a Slave, Best Picture winner.
1:10:11Jordan Hoffman:Oh. I think he's at the slave market. It's a horrifying, horrifying scene, but it's...
1:10:16Matt Singer:Yeah. So that's two more. So what are the four? And Cinderella Man's the other one? Well, no. Oh, so he's in Saving Private Ryan. He is? Weirdly. Yes. I don't remember that either. I don't remember him. So, yeah, there are a few cases where there are actors in very small roles. So it wasn't win-win?
1:10:33Jordan Hoffman:It was not win-win. It wasn't the Hawk is Dying? Barney's version. Barney's version. Private parts. Yeah, he's so good in that. As pig vomit. He's so good. Safe men. Should have been that. Safe men. The Chop. So good, The Chop. So good. Okay. Bernie Gale. All right. It's 12 to 5. It's suddenly 12 to 5. I'm not... But you get three quick points. All you have to do is name... Okay, well, I can do that. But he can do that, too. There's so many villains. All right, all right. I'm getting dry.
1:11:05Matt Singer:I can't think of too many more.
1:11:07Jordan Hoffman:I'm going to say... I'm going to say the Harry Osborn Green Goblin from... Played by Dane DeHaan. Oh, okay. Dane DeHaan played Harry Osborn, the Green Goblin, in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, alongside our friend Paul Giamatti. Yes. And I'm going to say, how many, I don't know, zero? Can the answer be zero in this case? The answer can be zero, but it is not in this case. But Jordan can guess, but he'll have to name one of the - Go ahead, Jordan. I thought it was zero. That's why I picked him. I was trying to be strategic.
1:11:44Matt Singer:I can't even, I would say, well, Dane DeHaan has been in one movie that was nominated for, but what the hell is it? It's not on the road. it's um
1:11:57Matt Singer:I'm seeing that kid's face I'm seeing his annoying face he's a good actor but he's like an annoying guy I can't name a Dane DeHaan movie that was nominated for best picture I'm sorry so you guessed zero I don't know what to do in this case I should get lots of points I think Jordan didn't guess the number we're gonna name him a point can you name but you have to name a movie
1:12:18Jordan Hoffman:no I can't I could name movies but I can't name a nominee If I could think of one, I would name it. All right. Yeah, he has small roles in two films, one of which a very recent Best Picture winner. Really?
1:12:31Matt Singer:Maybe Shape of Water, maybe? Does he show up in that?
1:12:34Jordan Hoffman:Does he have a tiny role in Oppenheimer, perhaps?
1:12:37Matt Singer:He does. Oh, they all... Yes, he is in Oppenheimer. He's Matt Damon's sidekick in Sleazy Sidekick. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And he's also in Lincoln. I don't know if he plays one of the Lincoln kids.
1:12:51Jordan Hoffman:I don't remember him and Lincoln. I have to imagine.
1:12:54Matt Singer:Enjoy the play. Bring me back a stack from the play. All right, so 12-7. How many have we done? So we've done four. Okay. Should we just do one more? Sure. Jordan's going to win. It's okay. Well, I'm going to say now Electro. Electro. All right. Electro. Electro is played by Jamie Foxx. Correct. oh and actually i don't even know which i think he's in the amazing spider-man 2 again it's all
1:13:25Jordan Hoffman:about the second one he's in two movies well he's in both of the amazing spider okay well no he shows
1:13:32Matt Singer:up again in no way home yeah a lot all that's right because it's multiverse yeah okay so now i have to say how many oscar nominated best pictures is mr jamie fox in and the answer is not going to be that many, but I'm going to say
1:13:53three. Okay. Matt Singer, do you want to jump in with a guess?
1:13:57Jordan Hoffman:I was going to guess three. So I don't know what to do here in that situation. I only have to name one, though, if I say he's been in four? You have to just name one. You could steal it here by being correct, if you're correct or whatever. I mean, I can name one. one i he's well you have to name what's your number what's the how many i guess i'll say i only have to name one no matter how many i say that's correct okay then he was in four he was incorrect he was only in two so jordan is closer but you do have to name one all right well one is
1:14:31Matt Singer:ray obviously because he won the oscar for best actor so he was in one other best picture nominee oh i know what it is i know what the only i don't think i don't know it's collateral nominated for best picture i don't think so no it wasn't um you're gonna kick yourselves i think a little bit um django unchained so i think i think we i mean i mean the score my my uh jacques demy is losing his mind at the fedex truck passing by the dog's going a little bananas that's okay
1:15:04Jordan Hoffman:but that's bringing him his blu-ray copy of uh the umbrellas of cherbourg that's right he ate the other one uh so we're uh yeah i mean a big win for you jordan well done matt in the win column matt was the spider-man uh guy well spiderman mr spiderman this was i know this was not this was this was slightly mislabeled because the easy part was the spider-man part i wonder though if we would have if we had really gone the distance with all like 11 or 12 jordan would have had more trouble he would not have mentioned dane dahan i could tell you honestly
1:15:37Matt Singer:I'm running out of villains. I mean, it was Dr. Octopus and the clay face, right? Nope. Incorrect. Sandman, right? Sandman. I get Sandman and clay face confused. How many, how many Oscar nominated, best picture nominated films do you think Alfred Molina was in? It's a surprising. Well, Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of them. Yes, it is. You know, so, but he probably is in movies. Well, best picture. I don't know. I don't know. Alfred Molina is probably in a lot of best, best it was actually five it's five but it starts with raiders and then he's like uncredited in two in both vice and promising young woman but also in chocolat and education best picture nominated gee i never would have picked up on any of those good game that was the vile a vile menagerie sure was vile it's jordan one
1:16:30Jordan Hoffman:Give me the whip. Throw me the idol.
1:16:35No time to argue. Throw me the idol. I throw you the whip. Give me the whip.
1:16:41Jordan Hoffman:Adios, senor.
1:16:44Matt Singer:Well, listen, folks. Thanks again to Sam for creating a new game that I won. It's always terrific when that happens. And we want to say to the listeners, now is the time on the show when we very quickly run through what is coming out on streaming. Theatrical releases available to rent and buy right now. David Wayne's Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass. A silly, funny movie can now be rented for X amount of dollars, even though it's still in theaters. A similar theme, Olivia Wilde's film, The Invite, which is doing quite well at the box office and I think will ultimately find itself getting nominated for some Academy Awards.
1:17:27Matt Singer:It stars Olivia Wilde and... Seth Rogen. Seth Rogen. Penelope Cruz. Edward Norton. And that is basically everyone in the movie. There's no other human beings in the movie. Not really. And they go through it all. Jackass, best and last. Clips version of the new... Are there new shenanigans?
1:17:48Jordan Hoffman:Yeah, it's about 50-50 new and old stuff, roughly. Yes.
1:17:53Matt Singer:And then finally, Minions and Monsters,
1:17:55Jordan Hoffman:Which Jordan loves. And even though he hates all animated movies, he makes one exception. And that is the Minions franchise. I do like the Minions. He finds them to be the true pioneers of the animation. I like the Minions.
1:18:11Matt Singer:And I like the Penguins of Madagascar. Somehow that tracks to me. It's a good movie.
1:18:16Jordan Hoffman:I don't think my children have seen the Penguins of Madagascar. I guess we got to watch that one.
1:18:21Matt Singer:Matt do you want to let the listeners know what's coming direct to streaming?
1:18:25Jordan Hoffman:Sure well first of all just those titles you just mentioned they're going to be available on Tuesday the 11th for rental or to buy I suppose if you need a copy of Jackass Best and Last which I definitely do. Available to stream these are now theatrical releases that are coming to streaming specifically. The MJ biopic Michael will be streaming on Starz on August 10th In case you want to know the very accurate and not at all selective story of Michael Jackson's life Yep Olivier Assayas' The Wizard of the Kremlin will be on Hulu on August 14th I haven't seen this one yet Yeah, I heard it was terrible I haven't heard the best things, no But it will be streaming on Hulu on August 14th It's about Putin, right?
1:19:13Jordan Hoffman:I believe so. Yeah.
1:19:16Matt Singer:It's Jude Law plays Putin, I think. Oh, I'd give that a shot. I'd like to see it.
1:19:20Jordan Hoffman:On Hulu, I will definitely give it a shot. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And finally, on HBO Maximum, we have Normal with Bob Odenkirk continuing his somewhat inexplicable but not unlikable string of playing action heroes. And that one, I think maybe it's more of a detective thriller. I haven't seen it yet, but I will probably be watching that one as well on home box office maximum. And then we have some direct to streaming titles. We have Don't Say Good Luck on Netflix with Melanie Linsky and Sonny Sandler. Sonny Sandler plays Sophie ready for the spotlight as the lead in her high school musical until suddenly she's living with even more drama at home than on stage.
1:20:09Jordan Hoffman:directed by Julia Hart of I'm Your Woman with Rachel Brosnahan. If it's not too adult, which I don't know how Sandler-y this Sandler movie is, that sounds like something my older daughter might like. I might have to pre-screen it and see if it's appropriate.
1:20:25Matt Singer:And B.B. Neuwirth is in it. She's always welcome. And Steve Buscemi. It looks like it's not... This looks like to be the first Sonny Sandler film to be made outside of the Sandler-verse. Like somebody else actually hired her. It looks like and maybe we'll find out it's co-produced by Happy Madison, but it looks like she was actually hired to be to act in this, which is nice.
1:20:46Jordan Hoffman:OK, so that's don't say good luck. And then we also have Hellcat. A woman wakes in the back of a moving camper trailer with a badly infected wound. A voice from the truck towing it tells her they must reach a doctor within the hour or she will suffer a horrific fate. that is available on Shudder, not surprisingly. It sounds like a Shudder release. Hellcat. I have some bad news, by the way. Patsy Walker is Hellcat.
1:21:17Matt Singer:That's a comic book reference for you. Bad news about Don't Say Good Luck. It is, in fact, co-produced by Happy Madison, so she hasn't it's still a nepotism affair, but it might be a good film. We shouldn't judge it before we see it. John Lovitz is in it. How bad can it be? John Lovitz shows up. I'm sure it has lots of acting!
1:21:34Jordan Hoffman:And next week on FilmSpotting SVU, we are going to get back to what we do best, or at least most, talking about streaming first movies. That's right. That's what we're all about. The SVU, the streaming video unit. And we're going to be talking about The Last House, which we presume, as we record this, will be the big movie on Netflix next week. It is available on August 7th on Netflix. It is a sci-fi, twisty sci-fi kind of movie starring Gretelie and Wagner Mora. It is a family sealed inside their home. But why? I don't know. I haven't watched it yet. Jordan has seen it already. I haven't watched it yet.
1:22:15Jordan Hoffman:It is directed by Louis Leterrier of Now You See Me and Fast X fame. And that's going to be our main review next week on FilmSpotting SVU.
1:22:27Matt Singer:Yeah, back to business next week. No pussyfooting around with theatrical films. All streaming. Thank you so much to the listeners. 1:23:17Matt Singer:So much so that we wonder how we got invited to the table. And that's what's happening on FilmSpotting. My name is Jordan Hoffman. And I'm Matt Singer. Thanks for listening.
1:23:33Matt Singer:Now, Matt Singer, you did all this. Spider-Man week happened to coincide. You and your family were in Hawaii recently. Yeah. Now, do you know what else happened in Hawaii? The Brady Bunch. Didn't they encounter a terrible spider?
1:23:48Jordan Hoffman:I got to admit, I didn't expect that to be where you were going. I was going like volcanoes. Wasn't there a horrible spider on the Brady Bunch in Hawaii?
1:23:56Matt Singer:Isn't that where that happened? I'm trying to remember that.
1:23:57Jordan Hoffman:The Brady Bunch is a little before my time, I'll be honest. I have seen the movies, and I'm sure I encountered the TV show as a kid. But this is not – let's put it this way. They're not inviting me on TV deathmatch to talk about the Brady Bunch versus Green Aces.
1:24:14Matt Singer:In all sincerity, I did see some photos of you and your gorgeous family, and your adorable two children flopping around with leis and coconuts and all kinds of stuff out there in Hawaii. It looked great. But I have a funny Hawaii story to tell. Of course you do. I'm going to make it quick, and then we'll actually talk about Spider-Man. Okay. I have been to Hawaii but one time. Hawaii's wonderful, by the way. I mean, no, as advertised. It's nice, right? Spoiler. Yeah, hot take.
1:24:40Jordan Hoffman:Hawaii is nice.
1:24:41Matt Singer:Hawaii is nice. So the only time I ever went was years and years ago. We're talking 15 more years ago when I used to work for an idiotic company called UGO.com. And this was a sham of a website that was actually eventually closed down because the original owners were such shysters that they pulled the wool over everybody's eyes and lied about the traffic and all kinds of stuff. But anyway, the point is this. For a brief period of time, various movie studios decided that they would send me and others at other websites around the globe to go to sets when they would shoot films. And this was pretty dishonest.
1:25:25Matt Singer:It was basically payola. I mean, they give somebody a great vacation and then they would ultimately write about the movie and say nice things.
1:25:31Jordan Hoffman:Well, you're not reviewing the movie. They're writing set visits. But we usually did later. I mean, when it would come out. Yes. Well, if you have, again, if you, now you have no scruples. You are accusing me of having no morals. Listen to you. Can you guess what movie they sent me to, to visit the set? I think you might have mentioned this when I mentioned I was going away, but is it Battleship? It's right. It's the movie Battleship, a movie that I've still never seen. The timeless classic. Is it Taylor Kitsch, right? Taylor Kitsch.
1:26:02Matt Singer:I don't remember. Here's who I remember. Was it Peter Berg? Directed by Peter Berg? It was Peter Berg, who a pretty, you know, everything you think about that guy seemed pretty accurate. Was Liam Neeson? Was Liam Neeson? Yes. I did not see him, though. The people I met were Peter Berg, who was fine, but I got to watch the great auteur in action. Yeah. And I got to watch him direct. And I was like, just let one of the interns do it. I mean, it's ridiculous what's going on here. I met and delighted in meeting one Rihanna. That's right. I was going, who was the female lead?
1:26:35Jordan Hoffman:I knew it was someone you would not expect from the motion picture. Battleship based on a board game.
1:26:42Matt Singer:Yeah, Rihanna actually and I hit it off quite well.
1:26:45Jordan Hoffman:Of course you did.
1:26:46Matt Singer:And also a young woman by the name of Brooklyn Decker, who I don't... Oh, sure. What else has she done? I don't know. She was in Battleship. She was in an Adam Sandler movie.
1:26:56Jordan Hoffman:We have to look it up, which one it was. And also, I want to say Jesse Plemons. Was Jesse Plemons in this horrible movie? You might be. I mean, it's possible, but you might also be crossing some Friday Night Lights lines here.
1:27:08Matt Singer:So here's the thing. So they sent us out at a business class from New York to Hawaii. Yeah, ridiculous. And then we get there.
1:27:19Jordan Hoffman:Jesse Plemons was in this movie. Good for you.
1:27:22Matt Singer:I got to watch the great auteur Peter Berg try and inspire a moment of improvisational comedy between Rihanna and Jesse Plemons on the deck of an actual ship. They sent us to Pearl Harbor, which was interesting. We got to go to the museum and everything. Right. And there was an actual ship there, the USS something or other. And we were on the deck of this ship watching these. And I got to watch Peter Berg try to inspire improv. And Peter Berg was just the worst director in history. And his cues were, all right, now do it like fried chicken. Do it like Kentucky fried chicken. What? I remember thinking, what is this moron talking about?
1:28:04Matt Singer:Complete nonsense. And then Rihanna would be like, what? Because she's not really an actress. What does she know from any of this? And she had an acting coach on set, like glued to her the whole time. Okay. Who was like, you're in Battleship, lady. I'm going to do the best I can. But Plemons would take this ridiculous note, do it like Kentucky Fried Chicken, and try to make his line funnier. I don't know. So anyway, they sent us to the actual ship. But the thing is, they put me up in literally the nicest hotel I've ever stayed in in my life. And I remember immediately Googling how much does this hotel room actually cost.
1:28:39Matt Singer:And it was like$8 ,000 a night just to stay in this hotel room. Come on. It was absurd. It was absurd. and then the funniest thing was the way they had planned it is that like when it was all over the the quote-unquote set visits where i did my hard journalism yes uh and and it was like me and scott colura at ign who's still over there and a couple of other good guys and one dope i'll talk tell you about later real could you imagine they sent us out to dinner like the nicest restaurant the most expensive restaurant i've been to on overlooking a cliff near diamond head is that what it's called diamond what is that big thing called diamond beach diamond head you were there i don't know jordan you were the one there beach like the most expensive like we're dining outside in the nighttime watching the sunset okay and they were feeding us and there was one of this guys oh who you may have met over the years and he ordered a steak and he didn't like it and he sent it back he's like this is too cooked i want it more rare like you moron just eat the goddamn steak to have Have some class here.
1:29:42Matt Singer:I'll never forget that. Never. Never will I forget. Anyway, the point is I'm sorry. Oh, no. Okay, there is a point. The story does have an ending. I'm at this hotel, and they made it so that not only did I get a free vacation to Hawaii, they tagged on an extra day. It was like, oh, what a shame. Your flight isn't until 9 p.m. that night, but you could stay at the hotel all day and do nothing. Like, gee whiz. So I'm at the world's fanciest hotel in Waikiki area, whatever the hell it is in Hawaii. And I go to the brunch. And who do I see? And I bring a book with me because I'm going to lounge by the beach.
1:30:17Matt Singer:I have a Star Trek novel. I have one of the Star Trek Vanguard novels. Get the red alert sound effect ready, Sam. I feel it coming. The first person I see is Brad Takei, the husband of George Takei. Wow. And I'm so excited. And I go, hey, that's Brad Takei. Never thinking that, no shit, George is going to be there, too. So I just go over. We're there waiting for the waffles. And I'm like, hey, you're Brad Takei. You're the best. And he's like, you know who I am? I'm like, yeah. Get away from me, you weirdo. No. So then I'm like, yeah, I'm a fan. I'm a Star Trek fan. I'm here at this hotel. And so he goes, George, one of your fans is here.
1:30:56Matt Singer:So George Takei in Hawaii. He's wearing a Hawaiian shirt. Oh, my. Oh, my. and he's like you're a Star Trek fan fantastic I'm like George Takei I you know and this is before I ever you know years later I became uh you know affiliated with the Star Trek brand in official capacity I I started interviewing them a lot and I had the podcast and whatnot this is before that I was just some nerd and I'm like George Takei I'm here with the day off in Hawaii and I'm gonna read a Star Trek book on the beach like that's marvelous and so we all hung out and And I'm like, what do you think? Should I get the waffles or should I get the pancakes?
1:31:30Matt Singer:Like the waffles here are terrific. We love this hotel. We come here all the time. So anyway, talk about a great morning, huh? Free hotel. And I'm hanging out with Mr. Sulu in Hawaii.
1:31:42Jordan Hoffman:It's like a dream come true. I just, can I interject briefly here?
1:31:45Matt Singer:Please, please do.
1:31:47Jordan Hoffman:So before we start recording, Jordan's like, let's talk about your vacation. Now I realize he had no interest, which I didn't want to do. I was like, we don't have to do that. Now I realize he didn't want to hear anything about my vacation. He wanted to tee up his George Takei story. Now it makes sense. Makes perfect sense, doesn't it? It's terrific. Well, now that we've used up the Matt's vacation time story with Jordan's selling his soul to meet George Takei at the Waffle Station, what should we talk about with regard to one Spiderman? This is Jacob Goldstein from What's Your Problem? Running a business is hard enough.
