In short
Natasha Lyonne discusses Twitter/X “haters,” her experiences hosting Saturday Night Live (including advice from Fred Armisen), her work on Euphoria (as “Crackwhore number one”), and her creative process as a co-creator/writer/producer of Russian Doll. She also touches on celebrity gossip, blocking people online, and her views on the Ukraine war and information differences.
Guest backgrounds
Natasha Lyonne is an actress known for Russian Doll, Poker Face, and American Pie. She’s also a writer/producer and co-created Russian Doll with Amy Poehler and Leslie Hedlund. Fred Armisen is referenced as a longtime SNL figure who shaped her approach.
Key claims
SNL isn’t about the host; it’s about the show’s ensemble and competition. She improvised to fill plot gaps when she was in the Russian Doll writer’s room. She says she received lots of Twitter hate after joking about leaving the country if Trump won.
Notable examples
“Crackwhore number one” in Euphoria involved an entire day of work with no nudity waiver; she says she mainly wanted to make out with Coleman Domingo. She also cites John Mayer’s “send a guy to the hotel a day early” tour-bed idea and her hypervigilant childhood coping style.

I'm trying to juggle plans, juggle meals, and enjoy the weather. Instacart's made that easier. I can sit outside, build my car with everything I need for the week, not have to step away from what I'm doing.
0:27Dana Carvey:I've been leaning on delivery through Instacart for meal prep, especially, David. Like getting fresh veggies, proteins, even those perfectly ripe avocado. I set my preferences once and it's so seamless. It saves me a lot of time and makes sure I'm getting all the quality I want. And the convenience is huge. You know, when I'm busy or just don't feel like making a store run, I can order in the morning and have everything ready for the same day and sometimes in as fast as 30 minutes. It just fits into my schedule instead of the other way around. Instacart brings convenience, quality, and ease right to your door so you can focus on what matters most.

1:19Dana Carvey:Boris and Natasha. They were the Russian cartoon characters. That's my mom and dad, as you know. I'm a Nepo baby. It's Boris and Natasha. No, I don't go to Siberia a lot. We might shoot part of Grown Ups there we're talking about. In Siberia? I don't know. These are my suggestions. Everybody was very concerned that I gave a full nudity waiver to be crack whore number one. But I just sort of thought, I love the game. Aren't you too big to be crack whore number one? Am I? Natasha Lyonne. Natasha Lyonne. Very charming. very interesting and scratchy voice scratchy voice good combo yes she was a lot of fun i don't know her well i've seen her out and about we talked briefly once she knew about the podcast i said you got to come on and she's sort of off the beaten path great actress doing stuff that's very interesting uh russian doll poker face people know her from different things back to american pie.
2:23She's been in a lot of things. She's done a lot of things and a lot of good work.
2:27Dana Carvey:A lot of things with a lot of people. Fantastic.
2:33She's fantastic. And she's got a new one called Clara and the Sun, I think. Yes. With the director's name is Watiki Kakiki. I forgot the name. It's very hard to say. You know who he is.
2:45Dana Carvey:Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And his brother's name's Honolulu. it's it's tiki wakaki it's so impossible to say right great director i know who you're trying yeah don't even say it i already know but great director cool uh interesting movie she is in spain we're talking to her she's funny from the get-go she just got out of the water 10 at night been in the mediterranean all day she's completely uh just uh goofing around with us the whole time it's really really interesting very funny person to talk to so press play if you want to press play and just keep it going we'll shut up here's natasha leon listen you maniacs geez how was wardrobe wow um yeah i was in the wardrobe department and then i really got into it with victoria uh you're in spain you are a cracker jack what case closed you you've done it you're a fun pack listen a fun pack you know they have little cereals there's like 12 halloween you get shredded wheat you get all the different different flavors i was just coming off your cracker jack i thought there was no chance you combed your hair in the last 20 minutes.
4:12What happened? You know what? I don't need this kind of hella beef. No, it's good. You're like Ursula Andress
4:20Dana Carvey:coming out of the ocean or something. You're like from the Bond movie. Ursula Andress. I followed, David, but thank you for the lift. I was trying to be because you're so young. She's a film maker. Yeah, I know. Remember all that excitement about Halle Berry's boobs in the Bond movie in the 90s? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that was a big, big deal. What about when she was in that movie Swordfish and they gave her an extra half a million? Oh, my God. They really love doing that, right? Like, I mean, it seems illegal, but I like that we got to see that. We got to hear behind the scenes of how it went down.
4:57She's like, sure. You can see my anything for a quarter million. Actually, a quarter. Really? I mean. If I ever run into you and you have any pocket change, we'll talk. If I run into you and you have any pocket change, we can talk. Oh. Is that a picture of you in the background? Yeah, I bring it with me to all my hotel rooms in Spain. I always travel with this gorgeous... You go, get one of me in the water. Here's the famous jean shorts from Dana's... From Dana's dissertation.
5:35Dana Carvey:I was slightly traumatized. I love it oh that is cool look at how dinky she got going way back by that it's like an optical we didn't know how anyone danced this is unbelievable we just sit in our chairs like nobody's I know and here I am just toting around this gorgeous shot it's hard to send a head to every hotel you have to send that to every hotel you go to yes you know I heard about John Mayer Natasha Tasha, I know you've been wanting any John Mayer trivia. I've got a quarter. I'll listen. John Mayer says to make his life, I think, and I'm paraphrasing. He said when he does like a 40 city tour, he sends a guy out to do the tour a day ahead in every hotel room in the same bed.
6:29Hold on a second. That's actually genius. I always have this thought of like, especially directing. It really is a thought of like, if you could just get through the entire day to totally figure out exactly, you never know where it's going to come from. That light broke or zipped or tell me when you're bored. Air conditioning or on is off.
6:54Dana Carvey:Off is on for the air conditioning. Yeah, you just don't know where it's going to come, but something's going to come up. Right. Or you get to somewhere and you're like, oh, by the way, we can't shoot this way at all. And you're like, we already scouted this place. What did we not see? Oh, come on, you guys. Directing a movie is not that hard. Ah, here it comes. Force and wells. Here it comes. Every time. It finally arrived at 10 minutes flat. Jane is coming down on you. Come on. You go in, you go around, you cut it together. I mean, look, you've done it. You know what it is. But it is different when you're like an actor and you're just waiting for that sweet, sweet overtime, that second meal penalty.
7:36And then you're a director and you're like, no. Do they take it out of your check? Yeah, they do. Your director's check. That's what the DGA is for. You know that. I don't, I don't, I haven't directed it. I couldn't direct a colony of ants to a melting Hershey bar. I find that hard to believe. That's what our manager says. Let's go to the tape. I'll tell you, my favorite thing about SNL is that because they have the, you know, I call it a reverse camera. But because you can see the monitor there, you can actually like reposition yourself and set up a shot properly in a way that is super efficient, actually.
8:14When you host SNL, do you demand to direct also? So yeah. And you know, I also demand that I write everybody else's material and make sure that it's only about the host. That was the best tip that Fred gave me was like that real understanding that SNL is literally not about the host. It's actually just straight up, not about the host. And I think walking in to do it, knowing that especially because it was a finale and it was like 80s last show and all that kind of stuff. really, really helped, actually. Well, we're saying 80 Bryant. We're saying Fred Armisen to catch the viewers. Catch them. Catch them.
8:54Catch them. And you went in and you hosted the last episode of the season? Yeah, I don't know what season it was now. Maybe. 280? Probably 21. It was probably 21.
9:07Dana Carvey:I had to get. Well, what else did Fred tell you? You understood that it's Knives Out because they're all competing with each other and there's a lot of subterfuge. Hey, guess what? We have another funny young person coming in to compete with your time, stage time. So yeah, you have to watch yourself. I didn't really, I think maybe Fred is like such an anomaly because he's a late arrival to showbiz, right? Like he doesn't get sort of like it with a showbiz sticker until he's like 35 and Chicago and sort of having been a roadie. So I think he's like well equipped to enjoy the ride instead of thinking it's fully about him and he has a really such a positive experience with SNL that it really shaped probably my sense of what it was.
9:58And just to say that, of course, I've heard endless stories as everybody has. The new documentary, that Morgan Neville documentary is great, Lauren. Just like to imagine that, like that, that Sandler experienced something that was the sense of I'm fired is really odd. I feel like that's a standout moment in the documentary.
10:19Dana Carvey:Wait, say it. What happened? Sandler got fired apparently, but I, I think it was, there was information around that firing because Sandler was already, didn't he already did Billy Madison or no? Huge start. Now also Natasha there, the only color I can add to that is with between Lorne and the cast, there's usually a few layers of managers, agents, business affairs, producers so it's a game of telephone like you hear Lauren's mad at you and if you go I'm not mad at you like so either you don't know what you're getting or your manager's doing something different but it's very rarely just some straight talk like I'm quitting or you're done it's when Adam and Farley left I stayed on another year because we were all kind of together in a chunk and I, me, didn't know they both got fired until a couple years ago.
11:10And I'm like, wait, Sandler was doing big movies. He'd done Wedding Singer. He'd done Waterboy. He had no reason to stay. And Farley was a huge fucking star. And I'm like, of course they left to go to. Why would you let those two guys go? It is a psychedelic sort of thing that goes on. But then also I thought it was really striking in the documentary is the idea that Lauren is like sitting there waiting for the phone to ring. I guess it's maybe it's an animated section, but it really hits like just to picture somebody on pause in life. And then it's Lauren. Yeah. Ring, ring, do it. Oh, and then my big regret was never going to the main.
11:51Like Fred would invite me and I would just be like, I'm writing or something. And now I look back Yeah, and now I look back And I'm like, oh wow, I could have really seen Where the jam was from
12:04Dana Carvey:Oh, the second, not the Long Island house, the main House, in Maine Because he has property There, right? Yeah The main house Which they say is the best place for an apocalypse As an FYI Well, we did build a dumb box We check it for radiation fallout and it's like on the lower tier. Natasha Lyonne is here. I'll be right back. Did you get your Geiger counter when you came in? You have to check the radio. Is that for radiation? Yeah, I don't know. Did Fred Armisen, did he ever do a drum solo in front of you, Fred Armisen? Oh, I mean, no shortage. I've heard songs by the damned multiple times. I'm not sure if you're aware, but Fred is a fan of the Ramones and the Clash.
13:01Dana Carvey:I didn't know. Makes total sense. Did you know that he loves the Beatles? I didn't want to blow your mind. I didn't know that, but we do. He said something that I liked, which set the tone for me as far as this, I'm reading this off this relaunch of this notion of Ringo Starr just a few years ago. Ringo Starr is not a very good drummer. And Fred just said, well, who even thinks that he's not a good drummer? Has anyone ever said he wasn't? Is this folklore got out? And now that's like where you say these songs are pretty good by the Beatles, but the drumming fucking song. I never said that. Who are you a fan?
13:44Fred doesn't like, um, wait, are we live?
13:48Dana Carvey:No, we're not live. We can edit it at all live streaming. It says, something says live, and then it's a ticking clock. That's just the time of us. You're not live. It was just saying, live. Whatever you do, live. Because it's a time is mounting. You only have. But for some reason, the time keeps moving up, which is very confusing because I'm terrified. You know, my mortality will strike. But the time keeps escalating somehow. Yes. Well, you've started a show that had a whole time loop. So maybe that's just the way your brain works. I don't know. It definitely is. So Amazon Music has a lot of cool stuff on it.
14:32Dana Carvey:Obviously, it's Amazon. So yeah, it's big. It's big. Music, podcast, and audio books. And there's one that I have really spent a lot of time with. It's an incredible book. It's called Sapiens. Sapiens? Sapiens. homo sapiens it's literally the book is just about the history of mankind and it's done in such a cool way that you're just learning things you never thought you'd you know like for example the largest tribe we've ever had a chimpanzees was maybe 50 they just didn't they couldn't coalesce bigger but because humans started to gossip like gossip positive or negative gossip is incredibly important.
15:17Dana Carvey:Like I hear he's a good blacksmith or you can trust him. And that allowed us to build nation states and how we became so powerful and took over the world. And it goes all the way through the invention of the wheel. I mean, fire was big, David. I don't know if you know that. Fire gets a lot of attention. Fire was big. But so does the wheel. One woman could fend off a Cheeto. Yeah, the wheel, it took them a while to get around that to the idea of we make something in a foot. But the whole thing, And also on the audio, the British announcer is incredible. Hello. The wheels provided structure within the family to be able to move goods and services.
15:58Dana Carvey:And what happened was, and this is the kind of book you can listen to, hear it in Fits and Starts, go back to it. I've been through it probably three times. But basically in the olden days We ate turtles and we ate just Raw fish and all this stuff And then we invented farming And then we started just eating grains and stuff So that's where people got really fat And got colicky Diseases Oh they did invent it I'll give you some proof at the mall And just the idea of money Because it would be David Spade I give you a cow, you give me a sheep A barter And then they decided during the Roman Empire This is called a shekel.
16:40Dana Carvey:And this represents, I'll give you a cow if you give me five shekels. Oh, is that where that started? Yeah. So it goes through all the way through to now, basically, the history of how we evolved in our weird way and how we're crazy nuts. So I would recommend that highly. Sapiens on Amazon Music. Well, good job. I just learned something from hearing about your audio book. Thanks. Yeah. Amazon Music. It is a really fun listen. And also, if you're at night, you can just listen to that. You can put your phone on your chest or, you know. Yeah, just zone out. And just hear that guy talking about the history of the world.
17:19You're getting sleepy, Dana. He works it in and you're like, huh?
17:25Dana Carvey:Yes. Now I have a monitor inside me. I know you've nodded off in the last two minutes, so we're going to repeat again. Amazon Music is your app for music, podcasts, and audiobooks. 20:23Dana Carvey:Your dad's name is Boris And your mom's name is Really? Yeah, and they're both cartoons And that's how I got to be such a loony tune I was born underneath a stack of dynamite And it had Acme on it And Roadrunner was there Roadrunner was a friend of the family Yes, very close, very close Roadrunner was a great actor When he'd go off the cliff And there'd be that big one-one-thousand and then he'd fall down. It was a beautiful take. So I'm just kind of curious, as a kid, what did you consume? Because you have a lot of references to cartoons and stuff like that. Were you a fanatic? Was that your place to survive your childhood?
21:07There was a lot of De Niro, a lot of Pacino, and a lot of Sylvester Stallone, Rocky. Guys, control yourselves. Go ahead.
21:25I always said he had a supportive wife He goes, I gotta fight She goes, you can't win I was like, Jesus
21:33Dana Carvey:You can't win Rocky I like when they call each other their names Throughout the whole movie I know my name and I know your name Hey Adrian I'm Rocky I mean, it's the same thing in DiCaprio movie Titanic. Rose. Jack. Jack Rose for 45 minutes. They know their fucking names. You remember that? When the ship's going down? I think they had sex. Rose. Jack. Jack. What is your favorite movie? You're a filmophile. Or a movie that you love. A movie that you love. I love All That Jazz. Bob Fosse. all that jazz. Roy Schneider. Yeah. Yeah. Hot piece. Excuse me, what was that? Hot piece? What's hot piece? Yeah.
Read the full transcript
22:25I gave him a quarter and you're never going to believe what Roy did. I'm so grateful in this moment that he's passed and so I can finally tell all about my days with, I was the, I was the shark. I was the dolly zoom in Jaws. Not a lot of people know that. Roy Scheider was a hot piece of ass. Is that what you're saying? Yeah, I mean, he was. He was. When I look at Jaws and they do those push-in shots, I'm like, I miss that time. They're all tan. They live on a cool beach. They have a cool house. They have a cool Bronco or something. I'm like, God damn it. And he was a push-up machine, Roy.
23:01Dana Carvey:He was a lot of movies. He'd take his shirt off. He's like, oh. Yeah. Well, because I think he was lean and mean. Oh, that's something that Fred talks about are like these rock and roll bodies like Iggy Pop, you know, when they're like small. lean. Right. But I guess he's got actually that scoliosis, which really tips it to a whole other. Who knows? Yeah. He's got a news flash. His spine is all. He looks like Tom Petty with a hangover. So that's why he kind of moves like that. Yeah. And he's like, give me danger, little stranger. Oh, he's just from scoliosis. Yeah. Okay. Jesus. And he also has a talking, I think he has a parrot.
23:38I was following him. I wonder why I unfollowed him. That occurs to me. I'm not seeing that parrot as often. You unfollow him because he went light on the parrot? Just sometimes when there's like a trend and everybody starts posting, you know, the same whatever, flag or photo or whatever, sometimes I get overwhelmed and I just unfollow everybody and start fresh. Because I'm like, this has gone too far. It gets a little nutty. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. I'm like, I don't want to see 45 of the same limits. Here's what I do. And this is a real hot take. But not only am I so quick with the blocking, it doesn't have to be a rude comment anymore.
24:23If I just follow someone or if I see a comment someone makes on something I don't like, I block them. And I'm like, they don't know me. I just don't want to ever come across this fucking moron in my Instagram travels. Yeah. I tend to, when the first time that Trump was elected, in theory, I was getting a lot of, I guess, in passing in a press line. In theory? Yeah. Why not? You're the one that called me Russian. And so I must have said something like, if he's elected, I'll leave the country. And I think it was literally, I can remember, it was like totally in passing on the way. And I got lumped in with like a bunch of people.
25:10Where'd you move to? And so when he, when I went back to Twitter, this is back in the old times. You remember this?
25:19Dana Carvey:Oh yeah. And I would, I started instead following the people that were being like, when are you going to move, bitch? And I was like, I don't know. What do you think? And it really kind of shuts the place down. Where should I go? Yeah. Can you help me pack? I have to bring this family photo Is my photo up yet? I want to check in A lot of people say they're going to leave the country I said if Trump leaves the country I'm going to get elected And I got so much hate Like how? You're not even running for president? I said if Putin wins I don't know what I'm doing He comes here and is our president By the way Natasha What do we not know about this Russia war With Ukraine that no one talks about?
26:02Thank you so much for asking I do appreciate it
26:05Dana Carvey:You must know a lot. Yes. Well, and also because of all my quantum leaping and traveling through space and time, black universe. Well, there's multiple timelines, as you're well aware. Depending on which one you end up in, that's what gives you the information from the word salad that you were saying in order to redirect. because you do not know information because I no longer read or write due to current events and such. What is your hot take? I feel like you're auditioning for a film part or something. That was pretty good. Just tell us about Ukraine, Natasha. I mean, what I would say is like, the underdog is usually like the person that you're trying to look out for in life.
27:01Like you're always going to judge a society by how you treat the run to the pack. So anytime you got like a big dog attacking a little dog, it's like, think about the actual human beings that are, you know, like stuck in that situation. But then I've been in, you know, when you actually meet people, I've like met Ukrainians and Russians that have totally different takes on it. And I'm like, wow, I really have no idea what's going on in this part of the world or even how they're ingesting information or what their life experience was. Or if they follow me. Most importantly, or if David blocked them recently because of a comment they left behind.
27:45I did meet a chick just two nights ago who was from Siberia, which I thought was exciting.
27:57Dana Carvey:Definitely. It's exciting. Yeah. I don't even know where that is. of women from Siberia? I don't know if it's on the map. I don't know what's going on. I'm so sorry. Does John Mayer know any women from Siberia? He said they have a good holiday in there. John knows everything. Yeah, his bed did well there. The show, not so great, but the bed. They have a holiday in Express in Gdinsk. No, I don't go to Siberia a lot. We might shoot part of Grown Ups there. We're talking about it. In Siberia? I don't know. These are my suggestions. I said what are the tax breaks like there what are you doing in Spain or should we ask is it a personal well today swimming in the sea not a lot of people know this because I'm such a city rat but it turns out my first great love is the Mediterranean and I was in there for just hours today uh very happy i did not you swimming with your cigarette up oh yeah i'm always just like this you know backstroke and then swap it out and then a dolphin jumps immediately i get a little tramp stamp as soon as a dolphin appears um how do you come out of the water are you like ursula andrus and that's my second reference sort of shorter more compact i will say that before coming here, I was definitely, I was like too skinny.
29:28And as soon as I landed, I just managed to sort of like pick up a little bit. Like I just got a pot belly out of nowhere. And I was like, well, that's fun for me because it's a lot of bikini work, but it turns out I'm very, very pale. Like I didn't realize how pale I was because I was in Manhattan. And yeah, Yeah, it just turns out I just, I would say I was not beach bod ready. But I do exit like Ursula Andress. And then no James Bond appears. Nobody appears. I'm a short little sack. So is that really the impact you're looking for? And that's why we invented the film camera for the close up where short people shine.
30:14Dana Carvey:Yes. Let's get in this lagoon with some bamboo shoots. No one remembers the movie. I'm guessing that that was a dinero and once upon a time in America. Oh, ask me this question and I'll be Sean Connery. Ask me. Hey, Sean, did you enjoy your vacation in Spain? Hey, Sean, did you enjoy your vacation in Spain? Yeah. Pretty good. That's it. Who should be the next James Bond, Natasha? Natasha who is is Marco Polo that's based on a real person right I thought it was based on a game in the pool in the pool Marco Polo no who's the four runner I just feel like he hasn't gotten a lot of work recently and as his mometer I'm thinking Marco Polo should definitely Marco Polo is that a person from history be the next James Bond yeah I mean you just that or Marco Polo that guy was a Brady Frankenstein Oh, yeah, he can't be.
31:19How come he's getting all the chickens in the roost? That's not fair. He gets a lot of chickens. What about all the other freaking chickadees? They don't get to be James Bond or Frankenstein? Aren't there any unknown great looking guys? I think there are. Were you in Euphoria? I think so. I heard rumors. There were rumors that she was in a field hockey players. I met Sam Levinson at Coleman Domingo's dinner party. and then stayed on a text thread with them for like a year. And then my part came in finally the day before. And I can finally tell you now that it's out. And it was for Crackhorn number one.
32:03So I was, you can only imagine my thrill. I'd asked for, I'd asked for, you know, full, well, I'm a never nude in the biz, they call it. And everybody was very concerned that I gave a full nudity waiver to be crack whore number one. But I just thought, I love the game.
32:26Dana Carvey:Aren't you too big to be crack whore number one? I mean, it seems like you had a pretty big career. That's kind of offensive on the call sheet. Not to be. Because really what I wanted was just to make out with Coleman. And, you know, that's hard to do in the here and now. And here was constructed a perfect container where I could let my love shine as it should. Anyway, there was nary a boob. I don't even think butt cheek. But we did. Yeah, we did play, you know, the fiddle fist. Did it go to? Were you ever uncomfortable during the sex scene? Oh, only like, you know, internally or negative self-talking mind that's out to get me.
33:10but nothing in the scene work. And Sam was actually really great. And Coleman is obviously a legend, but it was like a real, I thought when I saw Crackhorn number one, it would be like a two takes and you're out. Turns out it was an entire day of work and it was beautiful. It was like very thoughtful. Where was it? Because I saw a lot of season three, but where were you guys making out in the hot tub or anything or where? I think it was in a hotel room on a soundstage. All right, let's look at a clip. we don't have a clip okay um would you be offended
33:50that's a great song whoever wrote that song deserves a raise incredible someone's getting a check david's great um go ahead daniel oh i was just if you would would you ever be offended if
34:05Dana Carvey:you heard that I pitched a show, a streaming show called Crack Horde number one. Well, I don't know why you're trying to get Coleman Domingo to play it. Uh, when I'm right here and he's very busy. He is a stud. Oh, I'm so sorry. You wrote it for yourself, of course. And you're, but to be an understudy Dana would be a delight. I got called in for hand job helper. Number three. You did? I thought it was hamburger helper. I was like, I said, I said yes to that. And I was like, I don't even know what that is, by the way. David just shot a pilot. Whatever I got to do. I don't care. Yeah. Oh, you did.
34:49I'm so sorry. How'd it go, David? What was the name of the pilot again, David? Handjob nation. I don't know. I was trying to set up. I know I didn't have one. I didn't have anything. Thank you though. Handjob nation's okay.
35:07Oh, she's bye. She's on a smoke break. I'll ask you questions. You can answer them from over there. We're careers too large. We can't get to it all. I know. Look at this. I was a voice on the phone. Wow. Look at that. A whole ass sheet. I want a photo of that, but I threw my phone in the seat. Yeah. It was meant to be. a whole ass part. And then we were into it. Josh Safdie, Ted Sarandos, trying to figure out the Orange is the New Black shooting schedule for the next episode. We did it for like three weeks. And then somebody else took my role and I ended up being a voice on the phone in post-production.
35:59So you were, oh, it's just a scheduling. That's too bad. I know. It's really... It seemed like every time you act, You get nominated for something.
36:06Dana Carvey:Yeah. Orange is the New Black was still huge. Weren't you nominated for, how many times you've been nominated for stuff? Emmys and things. 10? A few. But not as many as like, you know, some of the, we know people that have fucking, just so many. And then I remember the before times when there was nothing to do with nominations because I'm like a child actor and a child character actor, not a child star. Pee Wee's Playhouse really is my truest claim to fame but then yeah once you've been nominated then it sort of becomes this like weird marker by which you're supposed to decide if you've been worthy or not and that's not how it's supposed to go at all and then you're also like wait are they ever going to give me one or are they just going to bring me here and it's a lot of outfits it's like and it's a lot of begging like you should do this round table where you say maybe i should get it instead of you guys do you have a face like when they announce the winner do you have a face that yeah ready okay and ladies and gentlemen not not in the chat you guys i just happen to be here uh okay what's your face when you don't get it.
37:29Dana Carvey:And now the winner is... Okay, that's good. I got nominated once for an Emmy and here's my exact... And the winner is not David Spade. Here's what it was. This is me. A couple of carrot sticks I brought with me in case show on launch. And then they go, the winner is David Hyde Pierce. No. I literally go, I made a bit of a move. Well, that's understandable. It was for comedy on TV or something. And he was on Frasier. This is going way back. Do you think you'll do Curly Sue the later years? Oh, gosh. I mean, with the ghost of Gandolfini, that would be it. Okay. How we all know Reubens. Was he cool, dude?
38:28By the way, if I don't get nominated for Curly Sue for later years, I'm going to sue show business. I'm going to class action. Yeah. Yeah. Paul Rubens is like, I mean, the best. You guys must know him now. I didn't know him, Dana. Did you?
38:45Dana Carvey:I never met him. I thought he was brilliant. Yeah. Pee Wee Herman was just like. Loved the whole thing. Did you work with Phil Hartman on that? Did you? Or was he not on that? Oh, no, I did because I found a Polaroid and it's in my kitchen. Okay. So I don't have like vivid film memories because I was six. A fetus with shoes. I was six years old. Yeah. But that photo is like the cutest thing I've ever seen. It's, I mean, what a fucking guy. He was like, it's not Sailboat Sammy, but it's something like that. I like that, yeah. I thought it was Officer Owe. He was a sailor. Sailor. Oh, yeah. Stripes and a little ascot around the neck.
39:32And he wrote it. He wrote on it with it. I'm sure, yeah. How fun.
39:35Dana Carvey:He co-wrote the movie. Was it just fun? Big adventure. You're sick. Yeah, I remember it as like a really positive, just because it was like very, like you could touch everything. It was like a very tactile. Yeah, it was fun. Imagination land. Yeah. Yeah, the whole set. Very pure. I don't remember being like stressed. All that came later. And in David's face. And it was, but I don't remember having those. I remember having them about like Minute Maid orange juice and having to drink the concentrate over and over or like a Pine Sol commercial. That's just like the stench of the Pine Sol. You would do the commercials?
40:17Yeah, I did like 60 commercials. A lot of them were shelved. Oh, you did a lot of commercials on a side note. As a child actor. And so I can remember this. Well, it wasn't enough because I was promised a Lambo, a Lamborghini, and it never came. Tax evasion from the family followed. So I guess it was not enough, whatever it was. Oh, because they ran your cash. Yeah, I never saw a lick of it. God dang it. You were fucking talking that old.
40:44Dana Carvey:We hear that story every time with a child after. Yeah. Such a book. Yeah. And I mean, Hershey's commercials shelved. You must have raked it. yeah I remember that jingle I'm the happiest girl in the whole USA yippee iokia I don't know why she sounds like Julie Bowen a little bit you ever get that I haven't until now and uh yeah it's an honor just to be nominated just say I'm Julie Bowen I'm Julie Bowen Holy shit. It's like she's on the pod. Listen, two gorgeous actresses. Good voices. Good job. That's a compliment. Thanks, boss. All right. Back to School Starts Now. Not just any break. This is a refreshing break with Snapple. We all know about Snapple's iconic real facts. So let's take a minute to go over some of my faves. Snapple real fact 455. Movie trailers used to come on at the end of the movies, but no one stuck around to watch them. I've heard that. Snapple real fact 831. Adults laugh only about 15 to 100 times a day, while preschoolers laugh an average of 300 times a day. Snapple Real Fact, 1983.
44:19Dana Carvey:The first player drafted to play pro football never played in the league. That's interesting. Snapple Real Fact, 1274. Kickball is referred to as soccer baseball in some parts of Canada. Hmm. So, grab a Snapple. Take a second. Enjoy the moment. Because let's be honest, this might be the most refreshing part of your day. Snapple, make your break more interesting.
44:49Dana Carvey:What's the most fun you've had in show business? I mean, of all these shows, I mean, were you getting self-esteem as a little kid from landing all these, booking all these things? Not at all. It was definitely. No good. No, I was just getting, you know, properly twisted up as is want to happen to children or awake and aware too early. Like, I can't really remember a time where I was not attuned. I think it's called the hypervigilance, you know, that sets in because you're always waiting for like another shoe to drop. And I thought as a kid that maybe I was smart and I should be like a spy because I was noticing things.
45:31but then later in therapy, discovering that that's just the fear that something's going to go wrong. And that's why you know where all the kind of exits are. And you're sort of like very paying deep attention to all the details. Like whenever I go somewhere, I usually like fully have a sense of a 360. And I don't know if it's from watching The Godfather too many times as a child or if it's because, yeah, I just like to know where the exits are. Are you a good flyer?
46:02Dana Carvey:Are you good on an airplane then? Or are you thinking about? Yeah, I mean, I'm getting, you know, kicked off. But generally speaking, if you look at the amount, your honor, your honor, if you look at the amount of flights, I have not been kicked off. That's true. Arguably, I'm a pretty good flyer. You're pretty good. And you actually deserve to be bumped up to first for that track record. Thank you so much. I get it. Thank you, officer. Flying is stressful. They don't take that into consideration. I know. I know. And it rare is like, you just got certain people have planes and helicopters and other people.
46:41It's just the airport now with like the heat wave. It's just like being in WALL-E or something. You're just like moving through space and humidity in a sort of graphic way. It's packed. In humidity. You didn't see an alien. That's not what happened. I didn't see an alien Do you remember that situation? From Wally the movie? No, from a girl on a plane that saw an alien Oh, I thought you meant Remember Anne Heche, I remember that No, she freaked out and then she said That guy's not fucking real And then they kicked her off Oh, well that's a real classic Twilight Zone Remember that?
47:19Dana Carvey:That was Billy Shatner Billy Shatner In the Twilight Zone That was the wing, right? yeah that was on the wing she was sitting next to someone beachcroft she was and she became convinced he was an alien she stood up and said he's not real and she said it was final death day she goes everybody should get off this fucking that was a while ago but now i believe her because everyone's talking about reptilians and stuff and uh oh yeah they love that in chemtrails I'm scared. Yeah. All conspiracy theories are back on the board. They're all back on the board. They're all up for grabs. And sometimes they're true.
48:00Dana Carvey:That's the trick. It's like, I remember years ago, when it hits, it's like gambling. There's a guy named Epstein and he has an island, secret island. All these famous people go, I go, really? Come on. And then whoops. Not my Epstein. Like I always say, wait a minute. Not your Jeffy. Now, did you see the photo of Stephen Hawking in the submarine? And there's like that little circle and he's looking through it. I found that to be one of the most striking images I've ever seen in my entire life. Like on a par with 2001 or something. Like, it's just the absurdity. You cannot construct such a thing.
48:39It's just Jeffrey Epstein standing there. And then Stephen Hawking is looking out this little circle. I don't think I've seen that picture.
48:47Dana Carvey:I haven't seen it. Oh, it's a good. But I remember that Stephen Hawking was part of the tribe. You know, so he's on the island and stuff like that. Drop your drawers. Gets a submarine. I want to get on the submarine. What's under that tube top? Can we do that? It's 2026. No, I definitely can't. It's just a speaking spell. You guys are just living wild because there's a, you think Trump's the president, so anything goes kind of a mind frame. Anything goes. Anything goes. Dana does a good trump. I do it kind of like as a creature. Anything goes. I will go. Sorry. Natasha, what is Clara? I literally came here just because you guys are funny and I wanted to see you guys.
49:38The only reason that I'm here at all is I spent two hours trying to
49:44Dana Carvey:find out what you were going to promote. and you're just trying to hang out with us. She has nicest things someone said to us a long time. Kiaka Wataki directed this new movie. Oh, right. That's a big deal. Tata Kakuku. Yeah. Yeah. Flare and the Sun. Ishiguro novel. I mean, it's a great, great book. Taika is fucking amazing. I texted him to get the part. Can I do that? Yeah, I'd heard about it. um, text guys and goes, here's my audition. Text me back. Yeah. If you answer me, I have a part. Well, same with Sam. I just, that's literally all the parts of just from, uh, asking for them from what sounds interesting.
50:34Dana Carvey:When did you like, as an actress, cause I was watching some of that stuff from your stuff and, um, you just come off so confident and so in the pocket. Yeah. And lively. People have told you that, right? Or use terrified. I'm off that way, though. But in Russian Doll, you're just like, boom, boom, boom. I mean, are you improvising? You're popping. Well, in Russian Doll, once I started doing Writer's Room and creating TV shows and stuff, I created Russian Doll with Amy Poehler and Leslie Hedlund. and so that was the writer's room and it was also a whole lifetime of like I called my sort of like avatar self Nadia after Nadia Comaneci and I had all these kind of like failed attempts at writing shows Polar and I actually did another show where Ellen Burstyn played the character of Ruth Greta Lee was still my best friend by another name and it was not picked up at NBC And then Amy was like, if we could do anything, what would it really be?
51:44And that evolved into the Netflix version of Russian Doll. But because I was in the room, I really had a sense of everything that was missing. Like, you know, when you see an ellipses and, you know, sides or in a script and you're like, Jesus Christ, what the fuck goes here? And you got to sort of fill in the blank. Yeah. being a showrunner person meant that I was able to actually understand everything that was missing because I was there for all the omits because it was an over-budget location or something. And I would do a lot of improvising to sort of fill in the gap of the plot hole or while editing, I would fill it in.
52:28Dana Carvey:You can feel it when you watch it. But it's a much better actor for it because I actually knew what was happening moment to moment as opposed to faking it or like sort of like pretending because you don't want to be difficult and ask too many questions. So you're just sort of winging it, like actually knew the ins and outs and where all the bodies were buried of the things that like we actually as a writer's room didn't know or as a production couldn't afford. Or if it feels like it needs a little more explanation, you can change your lines a tiny bit without getting in trouble. You're like, I feel like we need to clarify this or maybe I could add this and steer the story because you're not supposed to do that in a regular set.
53:07Yeah.
53:09Dana Carvey:You're a producer. You're a producer and a co-creator of the show. So you're not like a hired actress. You're not some David Spade for hire. You're out there doing that. You can do that, don't you? I try to do that, yeah. I can't imagine like when you're doing like something, like when Wayne's World goes into the movie version, right isn't it really like you and mike constructing the entire thing i would have to imagine kind of working separately and together but yeah i mean the first time we got out of the amc pacer and we're going to walk to the uh stan makita's don't shop it's like it's like okay how do we how do we walk you know it's just we never really walk actors now do we have to act and have a character but i'm imagining you guys are really are like Like, David, you have to be inside of every single one of those movies.
54:01Comedies are more like that where they get you for a reason. And also some I wrote in some of those movies I co-wrote. And so, you know, I know sometimes when to shut up. But sometimes we, you know, it's always for the good of the film. Maybe a take, let me add one joke. Let me add something else you can take it or leave it. That kind of stuff where it's not really disruptive. You're just saying, you know, if I'm more of a hired hand, but if I'm part of it, then it's really fun, like you're saying. Plus, you've got Amy right there who's smart and fun and, you know, good teammate.
54:33Dana Carvey:Yeah, and SNL was training ground. And we love Amy Poehler, of course. I mean, she's really smart. That's a great person to hook up with. I'm glad you two found each other. Yeah, and a good rack. And I feel like that's not something that gets discussed enough because of her talent. You're not right. It's not. What happened? Yes. By the way, a great dancer. Amy? A sneakily brilliant dancer. Yeah. Well, I just feel when I was out there last fall doing Biden or whenever it was, and there's Amy and Tina and stuff, and I just felt like I was a really large person. It's like... What do you mean? Well, they're just little people.
55:22Yeah.
55:23Dana Carvey:I mean, there's... is so big. Amy is 4 '4". Tina's 3 '3". Yeah, Tina's 3 '3". I'm 2 '9". Yeah. And Fred Astaire was 9 '9". And not enough people talk about that. He was taller than Boris Karloff and he actually read for Frankenstein, but he couldn't get the awkward footing. He was so fast. I heard that Ringo Starr is the new James Bond. I don't try to tie it all together James Baldwin, my brothers We interviewed Ringo and we were both so nervous You were? You can imagine Well, we couldn't get An interview with Ringo like this So we had to lean in on Like a press junket for his new Country Western album So I don't think he really I'm not sure Ringo knew He maybe thought we were journalists or something But he couldn't have been nicer Right, because I said I'm playing Humphreys which is a theater outdoor theater in San Diego.
56:25Dana Carvey:And he's like, really? What are you doing there? What would you be doing there? Well, who are you interviewing there? Peace and love. I have to say that every other line, peace and love. But, um, yeah, Amy's great. Anyway. So this Clara is October 23rd. I will say that, um, when I run into this young lady out and about, which is rare, but always like this funny, even if it's for one minute, funny, neat, nice, crazy. And, uh, I can see why you jump off the page in these auditions and meetings and all your stuff you do because very, very memorable. Just a really cool voice. Yeah. Cool voice. I listen to voices and they told us you will do the podcast as long as your hair is still wet when it dries, you're done.
57:12And it looks like it's dry. So we wanted to thank you. I just want to thank you guys for, um, being my new representatives and just reminding people that I do really, I jump off the page. I think the same of you whenever I see you. I think that you're so funny and I always want to get more banter. And Dana, I never get to see you. And I - I'm kind of a recluse. Such a huge pair. Thank you. You are?
57:37Dana Carvey:Not really, not intentionally. I just, I'm very busy in a lot of different ways. I have horses. Oh, I didn't realize that. I'm so sorry. It's a new thing. doesn't matter uh c 'est la vie

From out of the Mediterranean Sea, Natasha Lyonne joins the guys from Spain this week to talk about Fred Armisen’s drum solos, working with Coleman Domingo on season 3 of Euphoria, and her new movie Klara and the Sun. Also, being a child actress on Pee-wee's Playhouse, who should be the next James Bond, and producing Russian Doll alongside Amy Poehler.
