2:22Charlie Eccleshare:Anguillan internationals, chronological conundrums, football men dubbed into foreign languages, the muddled club career of Craig Bellamy, saints that never were, the dubious excitement expressed by new signings upon their unveiling, Richard Keyes trying to interrupt Arsene Wenger, and happy hunting grounds. Brought to your ears by Goalhanger Podcasts, This is the Football Clichés Quiz 22.

2:54Charlie Eccleshare:Hello everyone and welcome to Football Clichés. I'm Adam Hurry and this is the 22nd edition of the Clichés Quiz. On Team Clichés with me today is Charlie Eccleshare. How are you doing? Very well, thank you. September's epic against a Jonathan Wilson inspired Libero saw our three quid winning run brought to a shuddering halt what other kind of halt is there we've now won five lost six in the pod v pod era just which football cliches are going to turn up today yeah that was that really could have gone either way though that one couldn't it so hopefully if it's close today we'll edge it but yeah I mean that's a satisfyingly close you know it could not be closer after 11.

3:37That's good. That's what we want.

3:38Charlie Eccleshare:Yeah, I think so. You don't want to be embarrassing or you don't want to be like the equivalent of a guy who brings their own bowling ball to bowling and just like battering everyone. Exactly it. Right. Alongside you on Team Clichés, David Walker. How are things? Things are good. Right. Our quiz guests today. It's the People's Derby back for a third crack at us.

5:40Charlie Eccleshare:It's career we go. First up, Bobby, how you doing? I'm very well, Adam. Looking forward to this. The decider, I think it is, isn't it? It is very much the decider. Yeah, one one lost one against you lot. It's been nearly a year since our last clash. And in that time, you've released your own single.

6:03Charlie Eccleshare:Go on.

6:06Time flies. I know, I know. A whole year. And I was saying to you just off air that it's crazy that we're both still going a year on. I'm still coming up with new ideas, but it's always a pleasure to do these. I really, really enjoy them. And I get a weird bit nervous as well. So, yeah. Yeah.

6:22Charlie Eccleshare:Yeah, it's fine. It's good to have that nervous energy. alongside you is joe how you doing joe yeah very well very well adam um as always you suspect this quiz will be won and lost in round three our happy hunting grounds format versus your trademark career we go um it's where it all hinges really isn't it yeah absolutely and um i'd say we'll be heavily relying on bobby but i think amos got um amos decent as well at happy hunting grounds but um you probably won't hear too much from me on on that round when we went when we went to uh to dublin for the cliches live tour recently um very impressed with the standard of happy hunting grounds after the show so they love it over there exactly knowledgeable crowd yeah um completing your knowledgeable crowd in for theo it is amo the designer of both podcast artwork and you do well to remember that amo over the next couple of hours so i would say yeah i mean yeah fingers in in both parties you know i've i've uh i've worked on both teams and look i have a lot of respect for both sides um but yeah today today we'll be representing career we go in a sort of uh i'll be the colin healy to uh theo's roy keen i would say not that he not that he walked out on the on the team but uh yeah a late replacement and uh we'll see how we go well if there is any doubt over your creative allegiance uh once you've seen what i've done to your artwork for the christmas quiz uh you'll probably disown us completely so uh and that's fine that's fine i am looking forward saying that.

7:48So yeah, I can't wait.

7:49Charlie Eccleshare:Right. A reminder of the format for everybody. Each team are going to pose three rounds of five questions to the other team. A total of 25 points will be on offer. Let's kick things off with our first round. It's the trivia round. And your first question, Kareer Wego, is this. Anguilla international forward Aidan Scipio has a physical feature that is widely believed to be a record in world football. What is it? Okay. Okay, let's think logically what it could be. Angelo Scipio, did you say? His name is Aidan Scipio. Oh, Aidan. Anguilla International forward. Okay. Any ideas, lads? Biggest something?

8:31Yeah. I'm thinking extra toe. Feet? Biggest feet in football? It could just be biggest toe and that, you know, it's with VAR these days, you know, no one wants that. or biggest neck and he's good in the air. I like the big feet one. Should we go biggest toe? You're going to go big toe rather than big... I think big feet. At least that's a measurable thing. Let's go big feet. All right, we'll lock in biggest feet.

8:59Charlie Eccleshare:You think Aidan Scipio has the biggest feet in world football. It's not a bad guess actually but in fact he has the longest hair in world football. He has dreadlocks down to his knees. Oh, wow. Very Guinness World Records. Yeah, yeah. Essentially unprovable. Longest nails. Yeah, it's always nails, isn't it? You're 0 for 1. OK, question 2, Dave. OK, question 2. Which of these nations has never played at a World Cup? A. Kuwait B. Guatemala C. United Arab Emirates or D. Cuba Ooh, OK. I think it's between B and D. I would say Guatemala. I think Cuba have, so I think Guatemala haven't. I think they might have been in the 70s one, potentially.

9:46I think QA and UAE definitely have. My gut was Guatemala.

9:51Charlie Eccleshare:Post-missile crisis, are you sure? Post-missile crisis. Rattled you in. The big pigs and all that. Let's go Guatemala then. Should we go Guatemala? yeah feels right to me but yes yeah i thought it was cuba but i think if if emo has that idea not to pass the blame but i think you just know the cube the cuba has been there therefore let's go for guatemala all right well we'll lock in guatemala you've gone for guatemala and you are correct nice well played uh yeah cuba have had one appearance at the world cup in 1938 they got to the quarterfinals. Oh wow, fair play. So it was pretty good. So never a post-missile crisis.

10:35Fortune's really turned since then. Right, you're on the board.

10:38Charlie Eccleshare:Career we go. Charlie, question three for them, please. Can you please put these footballing events in chronological order? Keys and Grey leave Sky Sports. Luis Suarez bites Branislav Ivanovic. Joe Guneer calls a journalist a cunt at his first press conference as Newcastle manager. Sunderland beat Liverpool 1-0 with a goal scored by Darren Bent with the help of the infamous Beach Ball. The C word's so much nicer in a Georgie Thompson voice, isn't it? So start with the, yeah, with the oldest and move along to the most recent. So Keys and Gray, I think, was 2011, 10-11. Darren Bent was 0-9-10 season.

11:16Suarez, was that 2012? He was there in 12 to 14, I think. So it was near the start, wasn't it? Kinnear would be the earliest right was Kinnear like 08-ish was he after Keegan or something oh 708 I think maybe Kinnear so my gut my gut is Kinnear first then Darren Bent then Keyes and Gray then Suarez that feels about right I'm just not sure if Kinnear is first or second because it like it could be deceivingly recent yeah but I like the sound of of how you summarize it there so I think I think all for that we'll go with that okay so we'll go in from earliest to latest we'll go Joe Kinnear Darren Bent Keys and Grey and then Suarez okay that's locked in so the first one in October 2008 was Joe Kinnear and the journalist the second in October 2009 was Sunderland beating Liverpool 1-0 with the beach ball goal third was Keys and Grey leaving Sky Sports in January 2011 and last was indeed Luis Suarez biting Branislav Ivanovic in April 2013 13.

12:24Very well done. I'm applauding.

12:26Charlie Eccleshare:I'm applauding. Fair play, Bobby. Bobby, superb. I feel like him calling a journalist who can't have gone under the radar. You think? Yeah, those other stories come to mind before it for me, yeah. It's the way he did it as well, wasn't it? Didn't he go, which one of you, Simon Bird? Simon Bird, yeah. Yeah, you're a cunt. Two points on the board for career we go. Question four for you. Which of these players has never played for Southampton?

13:09Minamino has. Yeah, Paul Shana, I think, comes around. I think Boamorte has. I think Boamorte has as well. It was between Kanchelskis and Paul Shana. Kocelskis might have because he played for City didn't he? Played for City played for Everton played for Rangers It would have been in the Premier League I don't remember Kocelskis in that shirt I mean I can't I can't imagine Paul Scharner I thought it was Kocelskis at first until Adam said Paul Scharner and I feel I feel it's Scharner because I think I missed that Kocelskis Kocelskis played for City yeah? He played for City I think I missed that previously so he did bounce around a bit I would say it's more likely to be Scharner Yeah, I can picture Kocelska's playing for Southampton, like, latter stages of the Dell, more than I can picture Shana at St.

13:58Mary's. So I would say Shana. What do you reckon? Shana? Yeah. Well, go Paul Shana. The answer is Paul Shana. Oh, I can get in. Well played.

14:11Charlie Eccleshare:Bobby, just picking up on your claim to a vividly pictured Andre Kocelska's playing for Southampton at the Dell. he signed for Southampton in the summer of 2003 after they'd left the DL and were playing at St Mary's there was a big fuss about him taking Matt Letizia's vacant number 7 shirt he then played a total of two games at Southampton and was released to play for Al Hillel so incredible moment from you is what I'm saying I mean to be fair I can picture him at the DL but yeah no absolute DL legend Andre Kankowski it's nice on But Paul Scharner is just too blue and white, isn't it? Was it Wigan and West Brom as well?

14:51Charlie Eccleshare:Yeah, I mean, obviously the funnest part of this quiz is picking the thing that didn't happen. And I'm slightly disappointed with myself for picking Scharner there. I should have spent a little bit more time on it. Anyway, nonetheless, you've got three points on the board. Dave, hit them with question five. Question five. Sassuolo drew two all with Pisa on Sunday, a game that featured a multiple Premier League winner on one team and a World Cup winner coming off the bench for the other name one of those players oh all right it's a world cup winner and sorry what's you've got a multiple premier league winner on one team and a world cup winner coming off the bench for the other cool i don't have a clue so i would the multiple premier league winner i imagine would be the city player is there it's like otto mendi at one of them or something yeah or who's the he could be both I bet yeah I'd amend you for one and then we just need one don't we let's have a think so what about where's Joe Cancelo playing these days I think he's Al-Hilal someone yeah that era maybe like who might have won two or three Premier Leagues and now he's yeah dropped off a bit there was no there was no actual Italians was there City was there am I missing anyone big is Dzeko still playing oh Dzeko could be a shout yeah i don't know where they where he is but he was in serial he was at rome i'm afraid just wasn't he um yeah and he won more than one premier league didn't he yeah i'm up should we go daco yeah he was in turkey as he left there but i think it's a bit of a punt but i don't mind it yeah i don't know any as an old piano so yeah all right we'll go ed in daco you're going ed in daco i'm afraid that is incorrect you could have had uh the multiple premier league winner was Nemanja Matic and the World Cup winner was Raul Albiol.

16:41Wow. Who plays for who? Is Matic at Sassuolo?

16:46Charlie Eccleshare:Matic is Sassuolo and Albiol came off the bench for Pisa. Good question. Very good question and credit to European football expert Jack Lang for alerting me to this as well. So I didn't get it either. Edin Dzeko currently playing for Fiorentina. So he went far off. Good process from you guys. Yeah, good quizzes. Good process. even though they get it wrong they play football the right way gotta trust that'll pay off three points for career we go in the first round hit us with your first round please okay so i'm going to take this first round which bobby has called it this or someone has called it this i'm not sure but we've gone with a collins johnological so um it's essentially similar to i think your question three i'm going to give you four things and you have to put them in chronological order I also want to call it big chronological Atkinson, but that was rightly overruled.

17:41Right. So the first one here is Craig Bellamy's clubs. So put these in the order he played for these clubs. West Ham, Liverpool, the first spell at Liverpool, Celtic and Blackburn. I mean, what a perfect player to pick.

17:57Charlie Eccleshare:Great player to pick. That's really hard. So Liverpool was like 07-y. I mean he was definitely there in 07 because that's when I thought the club thing was a reference to that golf celebration. I thought that's where you were going with that. But yeah, that was 2007. West Ham, I'm sure, was after that. I think Blackburn was before Liverpool. Was that where he got the move there off the back of? Yeah, he did well at Blackburn. So what, he would have gone Newcastle to Blackburn? Yeah, I don't think he went Newcastle, Liverpool. Okay. West Ham, was he part of that sort of Edgar Magnussen era? when they signed a few players.

18:34Yes, around then. But he was... Edgar Magnussen came in in 06. So yeah, he would have signed... I think he would have signed... He would have gone... Yeah, he would have gone after Liverpool. He would have been at Liverpool at that point. Exactly. The XL era. So I think...

18:47Charlie Eccleshare:Celtic... It feels too obvious to put Celtic last. Wow, yeah. Doesn't it? He finished at Cardiff. He finished up at Cardiff. Yeah. Did he do a sort of random sneaky move to Celtic when he was actually still sort of a going concern? Newcastle to Celtic for a bit and then come back down to Blackburn? I mean, don't mind it. Yeah, I just can't. What about Blackburn, Celtic, West Ham, Liverpool? No, Liverpool was definitely before West Ham. Blackburn at the same time as Bentley in that sort of team, was it? Yes, so he actually... Here we go, get him going. He would still have been at... He must have gone.

19:22He was still at Blackburn, I'm pretty sure, in 2006. In 05-06, he was still at Blackburn. He was at Liverpool 06-07. So he definitely went Blackburn to Liverpool. and I'm sure he was West Ham.

19:32Charlie Eccleshare:I reckon Celtic was alone, you know. Celtic feels quite lonely. It does. It is possible he went there first when he fell out because he fell out with the management at Newcastle, didn't he? Yeah. And I feel like he was slightly sent away in disgrace. Yeah. Where can I go, Celtic? I don't know if we're just sort of fictionalised. No, it's good. I like it. It's funny. It's still fun, isn't it? In which case, if we do think this happened, which I do feel it kind of did, then it's Celtic then Blackburn then Liverpool then West Ham yeah I like it me too Celtic then Blackburn then Liverpool then West Ham alright so the first club is on loan from Newcastle Celtic yes after a dispute aired followed by Blackburn Liverpool yes and West Ham United very well played superb team effort Celtic superbly handled That sneaky little Celtic.

20:29That was like a nasty deflection we had to deal with. We reset ourselves and we parried it away.

20:34Charlie Eccleshare:Take that one away. Right, we're on the board. Well played, well played. Right, next one is Aston Villa managers. Put these in order. Tim Sherwood, Paul Lambert, Remy Gard and Alex McLeish. Okay, so Gard basically succeeded Sherwood and Lambert came before Sherwood. Sherwood and McLeish. That was before he was, oh, was he? Oh, fuck. Was he before or after? But did he go straight from? I think McLeish would have been pre-Lambert and Sherwood. Yeah. No, no. So it's definitely, I'm positive it's Lambert to Sherwood to Gard. So McLeish, did McLeish go straight from Birmingham to Villa? I'm pretty sure he did.

Read the full transcript

21:15And it was controversial. And I think he left Birmingham in 2011 when they went down. And then Lambert would have gone to to Villa Post Norwich, like off the back of Norwich. So I'm pretty sure then it would be MacLeish, Lambert, Sherwood, Gard. Yeah, Sherwood was... Sherwood was... The start of 1516. And then they got sacked. And then you got sacked and replaced with Gard, yeah. Came in. Yeah, so let's do that. Yeah. Okay, so MacLeish, then Lambert, then Sherwood, then Gard. Is correct. Very well played. Yeah, MacLeish, Lambert, Sherwood, Gard, and then Roberto Di Matteo, strangely after that so yeah fair play that's another point on the board third question first England caps for these four players Stephen Gerrard Rio Ferdinand Frank Lampard and Michael Owen

22:06Charlie Eccleshare:right right Michael Owen was 1997 he was 98 wasn't he he was 98 sorry pre-World Cup in I'm not sure well he played did he play that Chile game that England lost and was quite good yes I was about to say Chile but I got mixed up was that the one where Salah scored twice yeah yeah we lost two now So that was 98. Yeah, so that was kind of early-ish to 98. Then Rio... Ferdinand was before that, 97. I think. Yeah, I think so. He came in really super early in a friendly... I'm sure he's first. I'm convinced he's first. Rio is... He was on the bench, but not in the squad. But he was at Euro 96, wasn't he?

22:41Like in the background. Well, yeah, in a sort of...

22:42Charlie Eccleshare:On like work experience. Yeah, exactly. Like he was being fast-tracked. He did an internship during Euro 96. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think Lampard is last. Lampard was a late developer when it came to international football. He was a late developer. I just wonder whether he would have snuck one in before Gerrard. I mean, Gerrard's first season was, first big season was 99-2000 when he scored that goal against Sheffield Wednesday, which was in 99. Gerrard was before Lampard. Yeah, and he must have got a cap that season. In fact, he was even in the Euro 2000 squad. If not, he must have been knocking around there.

23:11Charlie Eccleshare:Because he got injured. He missed tournaments with injuries. He missed the 2002 World Cup. Well, Lampard famously wasn't in the Euro 2000 squad. Famously? Well, infamously, perhaps. him and his mates went off on holiday didn't they oh right yeah yeah trying to pick the Lampard controversy there I really like this I think yeah Ferdinand Owen Gerrard Lampard do you think Ferdinand's first I'm really really really sure you think he didn't make a 97 I'm pretty sure it was late 97 in a friendly I'm desperately trying to think about who it was against Hoddle would have liked Cameroon or something Rio letting him play out from the back because he was he was immediately billed as the player who was going to come out of defence with the ball and we were so obsessed with the idea of it and Owen was just younger and just came afterwards.

23:54Charlie Eccleshare:So I'm staking my reputation on it. All right, let's go with that then. Yeah, Ferdinand, Owen, Gerard, Lampard. Okay. The first player, Rio Ferdinand, November 1997. Second, Michael Owen, February 1998. The third, in October 1999, Frank Lampard. Ah, I was in bloody Belgium at the Stadium Alight. wasn't it? It was exactly that. Kevin Phillips and Steve Guppy. And then Steve and Gerrard in May 2000. Wow. Yeah. Very close, but unlucky. That does seem late for Gerrard, doesn't it? Yeah, it does. I would have thought he would have been fast-tracked with his athleticism. Well played right. Unlucky. So the next question, question four.

24:46When did these four clubs last appear in the Premier League? Middlesbrough, West Brom, Cardiff City and Stoke City. Okay so West Brom went down in 2021 because they were there in that in the lockdown season. Cardiff 2019 they last went down Stoke went down in 2018 I'm pretty sure and they signed a load of players. Borough 2017 I don't think they've been back they haven't been back since then no they sort of stunk it out so that would mean most recent is west brom so we're going oldest what how was the question worded sorry oh yeah so like oldest to so start with the older okay so that would be middlesbrough then stoke then cardiff then west brom that is spot on well played yeah i thought middlesbrough is a weird one i feel like that could be any time but i guess they haven't been back that's the point isn't it I talk a ranker.

25:47Adama Traore. And all that. I think he's going to say, and all that. You can't keep saying that throughout the quiz, just to be clear. Question five, final one, is put these 1990s moments in order. The first big run sits in the wrong dugout on his Nottingham Forest debut. That's 99, so that could well be last.

26:09Charlie Eccleshare:Don't do that, Charlie. Sorry. Come on. Let's not take a piss here, shall we?

26:17paolo one shop marks his derby county debut with a memorable solo goal at old trafford paolo di canio pushes over referee paul alcock and ryan gigs scores a memorable solo goal against arsenal at villa park okay so the first one's one shot that's 97 yeah and then paolo di canio is 98 yes and then big ron is january 99 to gigs is april 99 spot on yeah that is farm very well played yeah big ron dugout i feel like to be the one that might catch me out but uh yeah had to be that season i suppose forest going down so yeah well played and january is correct as well months months were correct as well so we did need the months as well so yeah yeah well played yeah

30:25Charlie Eccleshare:Welcome back to the Clichés Quiz 22. Clichés lead career we go by four points to three. It's time for round two, which I believe mutually is the audio round. So, clichés will go first. Question one for career we go is this. Who or what is this dubbed into Spanish? I fell in the scene, right? And I was going to be the next great success. Did you fell in the scene? Sore Villa, do you remember that? Very few defenders fell in the scene. Oh, wait. I played for England at 18 years. The most young defender in playing for England. I'd say that that was to fall in the scene. Do you want to hear it again?

31:03Yes, please. Yes, I think you have to be careful because I fell in the scene, right? And I was going to be the next great success. Did you fell in the scene? Sore Villa, do you remember that? Very few defenders are going to break in the scene. Oh, wait. I played for England at 18 years. The youngest defender in England. I'd say that's going to break in the scene. Got something. You got something. I actually don't know the answer to this. I've not looked at the answer, but I think I've just got it off the back of the second one. Have you got it, Jay? You're our resident Spanish speaker here. Is that right?

31:36Charlie Eccleshare:That's annoying. No, no, that is absolutely not correct. Despite my mediocre efforts, I think it is Roy Keane and Micah Richards burst onto the scene. Oh, no. Is it Roy Keane, Ian Wright? Because it said something about England, big exit England. Is it Roy Keane when he's like, yeah, we're talking about finals, finals. That's it. Oh, yes. That makes a lot more sense because I heard Keane in there and it was definitely a big exit. That's good. All right. We'll go with Roy Keane and Ian Wright, I think it was, but Roy Keane talking about England going out. You know, we're talking about finals and that thing.

32:11Charlie Eccleshare:You're going for Roy Keane and Ian Wright Talking about England going out of a major tournament What's the answer? Yeah, I think you've just got to be careful Because I burst onto the scene, didn't I? And I was going to be the next best thing Did you burst onto the scene? Burst? You don't remember my head against On Villa, do you not remember that? Not a few defenders burst onto the scene Well, hold on, I played for England at 18 Youngest ever defender to play for England I would say that's bursting onto the scene I love this clip I'm a bit raging there because he said whole van which I think means young guy or youngster or something.

32:45Also, what didn't quite make sense, maybe it's the translation is big exit. It's like that's what they're using for a burst onto the scene. Maybe that's what burst onto the scene was, yeah. I understand where we went wrong there, but yeah, I did kind of think it was that one. Yeah, my bad, Joe. Sometimes you can know too much.

33:01Charlie Eccleshare:Blaming the dubbing technology as well. That's a rare move. The foreign director equivalent. Right, question two for you in the audio round. who are they talking about here on BBC Radio 5 Live on Sunday afternoon? In my career, I always play better when I've got a point to prove. I think, Shea, the way that he does exactly what he said, I don't want to say seeing off players because they've got a really deep squad, but retaining his place as such an important player with the people who've come in and the money that's been spent is incredibly impressive, isn't it? Yeah, he's a brilliant player.

33:37He's a bit of a throwback, I think, you know, breath of fresh air. he works his socks off both in the offensive and defensive side of things he's a leader on the pitch, he speaks so well I just like him as a person, I don't really know him that well but his interview you say when he speaks, he's very honest in what he says and of course That's tricky

34:01So who's spent a lot of money and then who has kept their place? you know like what like so instantly i was thinking a chelsea player or if it was it from

34:12Charlie Eccleshare:this weekend did you say who did sunday afternoon on bbc radio 5 live okay um well it could be arsenal spent a bit of money like marino or trossard but um shea given say he knows them doesn't know too well yeah but he does know a little bit so yeah so i don't know shea given Kevin and Marino hanging out yeah yeah I went for the on-pint with him but do I come for a kick about Mikel talking on Newcastle days you know just yeah Liverpool anyone Liverpool well I don't know they lost didn't they and I don't think they seem to be quite a positive this is tricky it has to be someone a bit funny as well that they're saying like it can't just be someone presumably I feel like it's like a British player because I'm kind of getting the vibes of like they're bringing in these big silence and he's just like keeping his place.

35:09Doesn't necessarily have to be British though. Do you want to hear it again? Yeah, go on.

35:13Charlie Eccleshare:In my career, I always play better when I've got a point to prove. I think, Shay, the way that he does exactly what he said, I don't want to say seeing off players because they've got a really deep squad, but retaining his place as such an important player with the people who've come in and the money that's been spent is incredibly impressive isn't it yeah he's a brilliant player he's a bit of a throwback i think you know breath of fresh air you know he works his socks off both in offensive and defensive side of the thing he's a leader on the pitch you know he speaks so well he's you know he's a brilliant i just i just like him as a person i don't really know him that well but i just his interview you say when he speaks you know he's very honest in what he says you and of course bit of a throwback is it someone like Jordan Henderson or Jacka yeah but the way he says he's retained places with all the players they brought in yeah but I'm I'm not too sure Chelsea Chelsea City and even Newcastle yeah maybe oh maybe Harvey Harvey Barnes he scored didn't he I was thinking that maybe Harvey Barnes he's a bit of a throwback yeah he's a bit of a throwback and a breath of fresh air he is a breath of fresh air yeah alright should we go should we go Harvey Barnes yeah why not alright we'll go we'll go Harvey Barnes you're going for Harvey Barnes now who played on Sunday oh wait Arsenal Spurs and Leeds Amo Leeds Villa the answer is John McGinn oh if you memory hold the game already Amo I actually can barely remember anything that happened in that game I don't remember John McGinn playing.

36:54But yeah, he's a throwback and yeah, breath of fresh air.

36:57Charlie Eccleshare:But can you be a throwback and a breath of fresh air, Charlie? It does beg that question. I don't know. I don't think they're mutually exclusive. and was a breath of fresh air partly because he was like a throwback to a sort of old-fashioned straight-talking kind of manager. So I think you can, I think you can be both of those two things. Old air can be fresh. I mean, it's skinny jeans, loose jeans all over again, isn't it? Thanks to Ollie James for sending that clip in the other day. Glad we got to use it for even more useful purposes. Right, question three in the audio round for Korea. We go yet to get off the board in round two.

37:31Charlie Eccleshare:Who or what is this dubbed into Dutch? No promotions, no no no. That's it. See you soon. Come on. Yes, see you soon. No small terrain. Sick game. No shit. No promotions, no no no. That's it. See you soon. Come on. Yes, see you soon. No small terrain. Sick game. Oh, okay. Any Dutch, Amo? No Dutch at the moment. Yeah, it sounds like a phone-in, right? I was about to say it sounds like someone phoning in. Yeah, and it doesn't... Jamie Carragher talks, but I don't think it was that. I'll go play it to you one more time. Yeah, yeah. Listen to the rhythm of the speech, I'd say. Yeah, don't be obsessed by the audio quality.

38:20Charlie Eccleshare:Yeah, okay, fine, fine. No promotions, no no sense. That's it. See you soon. Come on. Yeah, see you soon. Unnozible, small terrain, crazy game. Rottop. It sounds like a Scouse to me. Yeah. It sounds like a... knows how to... maybe it's just... how to play the game? Oh my god. This is tough, drawing a blank on this. Should we just go with any... Steve McManamum? I don't know. yeah man i'll go with that why not the answer is no promos can't be asked oh no yeah see you daft little ground silly game fuck off oh no that is a that is gutting oh that's a gimme oh lads oh no i want to know how adam do you play around with a few languages and then decide oh dutch dutch is good here um yeah i want to kind of retain an element of recognizability in some of the words admittedly in that example didn't help whatsoever but yeah we can't go you know mandarin or anything it would be absolutely ridiculous but yeah spent some time on mersey's side kesey so i suppose you were miles off you're miles off getting a point so far in this round question four right finally could you get on the board who is sam allardyce talking about here the most exciting thing for manchester united and Alex is, is what he did when he had that space.

39:46I think he looks a tremendous talent. Yeah. Yeah. I forgot. It was Cristiano's debut against Spalman, wasn't it? Yeah. All right. We'll go Cristiano Ronaldo.

39:56Charlie Eccleshare:The answer is Cristiano Ronaldo. Very much so. Tormenting. Who was he? Mickey Hunt. Mickey Hunt. He looked like a Disney villain, didn't he? Strange limbs. Just over 101 Dalmatians. Anyway, you're on the board. It's a four-all. and this is your fifth question of the audio round. Who is Arsene Wenger talking about here as Richard Keyes tries several times to interrupt him to ask his silly little question? You changed him, didn't you? Did you say sniff? But Zwell was convinced that he was not a goal scorer. Yeah, yeah, you're right. Well, what is a goal scorer? And the first time he played centre-forward, I saw in training that he had the intelligence of the run, the timing of the run.

40:43but you know well Andy as a striker and so he slowly... Well, he learned very quickly. Very long. No, he's super intelligent. Is there a difference, Arsene, between a goal scorer and a scorer of goals? Yes. All right. Well, my initial reaction was, my initial thought was maybe Thierry Henry, didn't he? I think is he a goal scorer or a scorer does he mean great goals scorer yeah put his own spin on it they are literally the same thing do you see but shall we lock in Henri have you got any other ideas no no I was thinking Henri all the way through it makes complete sense just unless it's too straightforward but I think it all adds up I think I think so we'll go we'll go Thierry Henri

41:36Charlie Eccleshare:OK, you waited three questions for a point. Then we gift wrapped you Cristiano Ronaldo and Thierry Andre. Nice one. Superb stuff. You're 5-4 ahead. But let's have our audio round now, please. OK, full disclosure, a little bit nervous here because we did test run this last night to, yeah, not great results. But we've made a few amendments. Too easy or too hard? Last night, the highest score was one out of five. OK. We have made a few adjustments since then. Hopefully you've overcorrected. Yeah, I don't know, actually. Yeah, I am thinking back to the commentators episode and not necessarily wanting that to happen again.

42:19But yes, I will get cracking now with our audio round. And this is Can't Wait to Get Started. So Can't Wait to Get Started. And this is all in relation to new signing interviews. Nice. So you need to tell me. for one point you will need to tell me the name of the player and the club superb name of the player and the club that he has signed for okay i will get started with signing number one so i need the name of the player and the club that he signed for after what happened last year i'm i'm so happy that everything came along very good and you know the best thing is that i'm playing again and physically everything is perfect it's van nistrooy van nistro it's united yeah Rude van Nistelrooy because he talks about that he was injured a year before so yeah that must be

43:06Charlie Eccleshare:that horrifying footage of him getting injured at the training ground screaming awful anyway yeah Rude van Nistelrooy please Rude van Nistelrooy Manchester United is correct oh sorry yeah I think I'll take it that you had Man United there that is correct and that was one of the easier ones that we substituted in but you can see there was a bit of there was a bit of contextual information there obviously the transfer for the year previously. It didn't work out. Moving on now to signing number two. Same here, I'll leave the name of the player and the club. Many people will know that I've had a special bond with this club growing up.

43:43People have seen the picture of me in a... Yeah, I'm excited. I can't wait to get going. I've obviously had quite a long holiday. Yeah, got it. Wilshire to West Ham? Ah, it was Wilshire. I couldn't work out which club. That's right, isn't it, Dave? Because he talks about having... He's a West Ham fan as a kid. I think you're right, actually. I'm glad you said West Ham Because I was going to say Luton Having like Just joined Just joined them as manager Should we hear it again

44:08Charlie Eccleshare:Just to be sure I think West Ham's right I think I can remember him Talking about Being Like a West Ham fan From a West Ham family As a kid How he sounds Sounds more like 2018 and now But let's hear it again Just in case Yeah Many people will know That I've had a special bond With this club growing up People have seen the picture of me And Yeah And Yeah I'm excited I can't wait to get going I've obviously had quite Sounds excited They always do Yeah let's go Wilshire to West Ham Jack Wilshire is correct West Ham is correct Don't do that Joe Yeah Very Chris Tarrant When we did it last night I think Bobby did say Luton so that was potential there as well and yeah the kind of backing music there I did take that from the West Ham official website Charlie has memorised all the soundtracks I think when I said Luton I think Joey was like a lot of images of him going around as a kid in a Luton show that makes sense alright two from two moving on to player number three player and club needed the biggest thing for me was the stadium how energetic it is in the warmer even they're singing songs they call each player over to come and greet the fans and they greet you so things like that is quite warming and welcoming and then i've got it because i listened to or i watched a clip of this guy speaking the other day that's alex oxlade chamberlain oh he was on the foscast the other day was he talking about basictas then do you think must be turkey yeah yeah alex oxlade Chamberlain to Basictas.

45:54Tree from Tree.

45:55Charlie Eccleshare:Wow! David Walker. Great stuff. Well played. A little assist from Ben Foster there, was it? Listening to the Foscast finally paying off. 7-5. Clichés lead. Well played. Now on to number four. Why have you decided to come here? Obviously to play football. First and foremost. There's any player, you know, you want to play football. and I'm no different to anyone else. So I always wanted to play. You know, it works out well for both parties. How did this move transpire? When did you hear about it? Well, I think Peter said today there's no secret that they've been trying to get me for a few years.

46:35Charlie Eccleshare:And the different circumstances are just... So is it Robbie King to Leeds, do you think? Yeah, so as soon as he said Peter, I was going to say Liverpool. Oh, it's Peter Ridgdale. Yeah, and I think him wanting to get them for years because he went to Coventry when loads of clubs wanted him. And he went to Milan. And he went to Inter. Yeah, I think Leeds makes sense. I mean, obviously, it could be any number of clubs, but I think Leeds makes sense. Peter clinches it as far as, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, the boyhood club ongoing joke, but it's, yeah, it's spot on. Robbie Keane to Leeds. Robbie Keane is correct.

47:11Leeds United is not correct.

47:13Charlie Eccleshare:Oh, wow! You've done us over completely! I don't even update the score on the Google Doc Don't get complacent Sorry Lee What I'll do here is I'll play it And I'll tell you, listen to the accent of the interviewer Why have you decided to come here? Obviously to play football First and foremost As any player, you know, you want to play football I'm no different to anyone else So Always wanted to play You know, it works out well for both parties How did this move transpire? When did you hear about it? Well, I think Peter said today, there's no secret that they've been trying to get me for a few years, but in the different circumstances, they're just...

47:54Charlie Eccleshare:Peter Lorwell, the Celtic guy. Got it. He wouldn't have said that before Leeds either. Another clue in there is Robbie Keane said, this works out for both parties. It was a loan. It was a loan. So it worked out well that he wasn't getting a game for Spurs. And then, yeah, pitched up at Celtic. There you go. Okay. and then we're going to move on to our final final one here we might need a lead as well because happy hunting rounds can be here we go i knew you were going to say that if you get it you get it uh yeah very good uh off the pitch yeah happy to be home it's as if we've never been away myself uh wife and two kids so now very happy and obviously just want to get back in the pitch now uh from a footballing point of view that's brutal who is that i will definitely need to hear it again Yeah, very good.

48:42Off the pitch, yeah, happy to be home. It's as if we've never been away. Myself, wife and two kids. So no, very happy and obviously just want to get back in the pitch now from a footballing point of view. Is it Aidan McGeady? What a pluck that is. Having been away playing in Russia or somewhere. Could be. Yeah, do we think he's going to a former club or just back to a place or a country where he's...

49:06Charlie Eccleshare:Yeah, so he's returning from abroad. Yeah. I don't know what Aidan McGeady sounds like. It could be him. To an English club. Aidan McGeady would be a deep cut, wouldn't it? Going back to Sunderland? Because he went to Russia, didn't he? He was in Russia for a bit. I mean, I would back myself to recognise the voice of much more notable Irish players. So it does lend itself to being a bit more of an obscure player. I wouldn't know Aidan McGeady's voice at all. I mean, home does suggest it's a former club. I don't know his career path, to be honest. but just think is there anyone else similar level Irish player who returned to a former club in a way that was in any way kind of notable I think it's what does John O'Shea sound like I don't think that is him but just as an example I think it's I think it's I think the home aspect is I've been abroad and I'm back in the country that I used to live in yeah would he call it would he call what just England home as a when it's not as when he's not from there I mean maybe I can't think of any other player you're returning to an Irish club well is there an Irish club player who you know ended their career back in Ireland Damien Duff yeah Damien Duff maybe but I don't think that's Damien Duff because you didn't have to play abroad you just should be coming home right to Ireland that's what I mean yeah can we have it one more time please McGeady or Duff yeah very good after pitch happy to be home as if we've never been away myself wife and two kids so no very happy and obviously just want to get back on the pitch now from a footballing point of view maybe let's go McGeady I don't that's all we've got it doesn't I don't yeah I don't know McGeady then yeah I feel like I might know Duff's voice we need the club because I've seen him interviewed recently we need the club oh Christ Sund oh no Sund or Everton oh god he played for he was at Everton before he came back to Sund or Everton yeah I don't even went back to Everton what did he say Back from Russia to Sunderland.

51:02Charlie Eccleshare:Could he say it? Yeah, I'm home in a place I've never... Well, we've got a two-point lead to take into the final round. So I think we can gamble here. Should we just go with that, McGeady-Sunderland? Yeah. We've got nothing else concrete. To Sunderland. Aidan McGeady to Sunderland. Aidan McGeady is a Glaswegian. The fear. That accent, that accent's a Dublin accent. He did mention the player. It was Damien Duff. Oh, but where? Any idea, the club? Shelbourne? He did manage shells recently, but he came back, finished his career, if you were to say the most successful Irish team recently. Don't worry about it.

51:40Shamrock Rovers. Shamrock Rovers. Never have got the club, but we lads. Never have got it. Yeah, Damien Doss Shamrock Rovers, potentially pretty deep. Yeah, he's got a fairly distinct South Dublin accent. Caught you out there, but three from five.

51:55Charlie Eccleshare:Wow. Great. Another superb round from Korea we go. cliches lead seven points to five we'll be back very shortly for the climactic round three

53:29Oh, look at that! That is wonderful!

53:37Charlie Eccleshare:Welcome back to Football Clichés, the 22nd Football Clichés quiz. It's Clichés 7, Career We Go 5. We're going into round three. Clichés will be rolling out happy hunting grounds for the opponents and they in turn will be giving us career we go. Right, a recap of the format of Happy Hunting Grounds. We're going to give you a choice of a difficulty level between one and three. Based on that choice, we'll give you a combination of Premier League club and Premier League stadium. You will have to tell us who has scored for that club at that stadium and which season. And there will be no half points for just naming the player either.

54:15Charlie Eccleshare:You've got to get everything to get the points. There will be no answers from the 2024-25 season allowed. And you will not be allowed to choose Erling Haaland. We're done with him. That goes some way to appease Charlie, but not all the way, I should say. And right, we're going to interchange our questions for this final round. Bobby, talk us through career we go. Yeah, cheers, Adam. We'll simply read out a player's CV in order of a club's career where they started at. I'll give you the first two clubs. If you get it after that, it's three points. The next set of clubs, if you get it after that, it's two points.

54:50and then the remaining clubs, if you need, will be one point.

54:54Charlie Eccleshare:Secretly believe that is actually a better quiz format than ours, but I don't want to. Anyway, it doesn't matter. Right, third round begins here. Question one for you, Kariwigo. Do you want a difficulty level of one, two or three? Right, Joe, me and Emo will discuss this. Emo, are you back in a three or do you want to ease in with a two? What are you thinking? I'm tempted by a three, but maybe we should just go two because we do have five. okay we'll start with a two please Adam okay you're going for level two at level three I can tell you would have been Leeds United at St James' Park I could tell you nearly every Leeds United at St James' Park for a bonus point but yeah I guarantee if I go into my WhatsApp now I'll have a message from Charlie saying are you my sports Leeds can you just change that one anyway you've chosen level two and that is Newcastle United at Highbury okay Newcastle at Highbury okay so I remember that I remember a year didn't Shearer score a couple and it was like the first time Newcastle had won in London or something for ages or won Arsenal and I believe that would have been 0-1-0-2 maybe they finished I think they finished fourth in 0-1-0-2 or third didn't they so definitely remember Shearer scoring can you think of any others before we no I'm trying to think early 90s Andy Cole possibly you know because Arsenal weren't as good yeah but Shearer's probably yeah I don't know if I've got the years mixed up here because Arsenal won the 002 do they lose at home to I've got something in my memory that Arsenal lost to Newcastle it was the first time Newcastle had won at Arsenal or in London randomly for a while so maybe we'll just go Shearer 0-1-0-2?

56:51Yeah, I think.

56:52Charlie Eccleshare:Good as any. All right, we'll go Alan Shearer 0-1-0-2. Alan Shearer 0-1-0-2. Arsenal 1, Newcastle United 3. Goal scorers that day. Cometh the hour, cometh the man, Andy O 'Brien. At the death, Laurent Robert. And four minutes from time, Alan Shearer. Okay. Thank Christ. And you're spot on about that London record. That was a thing. Yeah, that was a thing, right? Yeah, it's weird. It was London, not just Arsenal, wasn't it? Yeah, I think so. A lot of capital punishment for Newcastle before that game. They went top of the league, I think, didn't they, after that game? Quite possibly, because they were knocking around.

57:29It was also the game, Henri went mad at the end of it, because I think it was Graham Pohl sent off Ray Parler in the first half, and he had to be held back, and Robson called Wenger a bad loser.

57:38Charlie Eccleshare:Anyway. Yeah. It's 7-0. Good start to round three. Let's have our first question, please. Okay. And as always, what we always do, these are players who have played in the Premier League. so for play number one first two clubs are Boa Vista and Freya Munday could you spell Freya Munday for me please F-R-E-A-M-U-N-D-E wow Freya Munday Boa Vista are going out of business yeah um but we're not going to get off that are we off Boa Vista and Freya Munday realistically no I was I was encouraged by Boa Vista but not by Freya Munday whatsoever uh we'll have to take the next two clubs please Bobby okay the next two clubs are Porto and Chelsea okay so that could be any of like Paolo Ferreira or Carvalho or Thiago Manish yeah Thiago was a Benfica man he was Benfica okay so it's Ferreira or who was the one you said oh Manish yeah only others they were the main ones weren't they Carvalho there's also who was the right back?

58:45Del Horno he was Spanish left back it is Welsh

58:51Charlie Eccleshare:not Ferreira another one no played he he he dug his studs into a Liverpool player's back by the corner flag oh yes Basingua yeah and he came from Porto I understand so we've got four options here which is brutal yeah we're in what have we got level is 7-0 isn't it now yeah we need to just try and take the point because we don't know four players is too many to choose from I have no idea which of those let's take Bobby will take the final two clubs please the final two are QPR and Traps on Sport so it'll be Basingua won't it wow okay Jose Basingua please Jose Basingua for one point is correct well played well saved salvaged kept ourselves in front yep good right career we go you trail by a point as we go into the second question level one two or three should we go for three i think let's go for a little three and see if we can get ahead all right we'll go for a three okay for three points sunderland at stanford bridge oh um okay barini well no there was anua welbeck and one other they won three nil in yeah what was the season oh nine ten was it the season liverpool were going to win the league and then gerard slipped was that 13 14 13 14 Chelsea lost at home to Sunderland it was like the first defeat Jose had at home for Chelsea something mad and it was I think it was Fabio Berrini scored a penalty or someone scored a penalty fair I'm Berrini's really familiar but Bobby did you say Welbeck there yeah so Welbeck I'm pretty sure Welbeck was on loan at Sunderland I can't if it was neither 9 10 or 10 11 um and anua anua scored like a little amazing run that is right i'm not sure in the year if you know the year it's either 9 10 or 10 11 and it will annoy me i'm probably 10 11 because chelsea won the league in 9 10 didn't they so i would go either anua or welbeck 10 11 or barini 13 14 i'll let you let you decide oh my god it's just a very vivid watching at the pub it was this it was oh my god so that was that was Mourinho's first season back and I don't think he'd lost at home before then so it probably scans and Liverpool won the league so yeah because I was watching with a Liverpool fan and he basically thought they'd won the league that day which they didn't but um we'll go with that let's go with that yeah why not okay so Fabio Barini 13-14 yeah Chelsea 1 Sunderland 2 goal scorers that day Connor Wickham and Fabio Barini oh my goodness there we are that's why I'm here but I got the call unbelievable the pendulum swings again 10-8 to career we go let's have our second question Bobby you would have been right yeah you were right Bobby oh well done Bob was it 10-11 we should have gone for 0-9-10 it was Chelsea 7 Sunderland 2 oh right okay it was 10-11 and it was Anuha wasn't it Anuha yeah he scored that dribble and Welbeck and Welbeck Asamoah Jan that's it Asamoah Jan that's it number three That was the Zenden dad dancing goal, I believe.

1:02:05Yes, yeah. All coming back. Just when you think you can't add any more extra content.

1:02:12Charlie Eccleshare:Absolutely amazing. I watched it in a... Okay. Okay. So your second player. First club, Newell's Old Boys and Estudiantes. Now, I'm going to offer something here, which I don't know whether they would do this or not, But you might be interested to know, lads, that I am an almost daily player of the career we go daily game. Not every day. Most days I'll just go on there and have a little go. They wouldn't take one from their daily game, would they? They did recently have Gabriel Heinzer, who played for... And it was New Orleans Old Boys, and I went for someone else, another Argentinian player, and it ended up being Gabriel Heinzer.

1:02:53But I don't think that's enough to go for the full three. And you remember it being both? It was these two clubs at the start? I don't remember who was second, but I remember the first club was definitely Newell's.

1:03:06Charlie Eccleshare:Right. I believe Juan Sebastian Veron played for Estudiantes. We're going to have to take the next two, aren't we? Yeah, I don't think he played for Newell's. So either way, I don't think we've got enough confidence here. Yeah, let's play relatively safe. Let's have two more clubs. I think we can get this. Okay. And that daily game is over at careerwego.com. Nice one today. All right. Next set of clubs. Deportivo La Coruña. West Ham on loan and harassing Santander Is that Diego Tristan then? Must be Or Pandiani I always get those two confused but I think it's Tristan Tristan was Spanish wasn't he?

1:03:41Charlie Eccleshare:Tristan was Spanish so he wouldn't have played in Argentina Oh so am I thinking of Pandiani then? Yeah El Rifle himself Walter Pandiani He played for Birmingham though later who may well appear so you gave us three clubs there Bobby was that intentional? Yeah yeah it was a slightly longer career so I've just So West Ham was alone did you say? Yeah Deportivo Tristan obviously definitely played for Deportivo. So Pandiani... Did Pandiani go to West Ham on loan? Pandiani went to Birmingham. He went to Birmingham, okay. I mean, it feels like he could have played for West Ham as well. Oh, could this be the manager?

1:04:11Was Scaloni... Was Scaloni... He wasn't on loan. He wasn't on loan, was he?

1:04:17Charlie Eccleshare:He was on loan. Loan from Deportivo. Was he on loan? Don't rule out the loan at all, to be honest. He played in the FA Cup final. He's the one who gave the ball away. Yeah, yeah, he is, but... Fuck. we shouldn't be focusing on strikers necessarily who's the other guy who also played for Birmingham as well so what was the club you said Bobby after West Ham I'm sure it won't help but it was Rassing Santander Scaloni is who I've got in my head do we risk it? but I know what you mean about it seeming like was it really a loan because he made that impact with the giving the ball away but there's no reason that wouldn't mean he was on loan who's that other player Dave?

1:04:53Charlie Eccleshare:who are you thinking of? I can't remember his name that's the essential issue any clues about whatsoever like a little number 10-y type do you think about Lanzini or no earlier earlier maybe no should we just go so if we get one point we'll be we'll be losing still we'll be one point behind right it's a very own question what is this question two yeah yeah all right let's do let's do the last chunk of clubs I think so I think so yeah go for it make your case do you want to go Scaloni did he Did he play for Deportivo? Like I have a memory of him. Not a clue. Not a clue. All I know is he's an Argentinian and he played for West Ham.

1:05:31I couldn't tell you if it was loaned or not. The other thing is like what clubs are going to come that are going to all of a sudden give it to us like post-racing Santander?

1:05:38Charlie Eccleshare:No, it's a good point. Well, they will if it's another player. Yeah, they won't if it's him. Exactly. Scaloni, no chance. I think let's go for one and then keep in touch. We've still got three questions left. All right. Yeah, the only thing to think about is threes are going to be like Like threes are hard to get. To go off two clubs, that's tricky. So we kind of need to, in some ways, we need to capitalise. But nothing. It will be on your head if we go for Scaloni now. All right, let's get more then. Let's get more. Well, I would just be, like, I'm not 100 % sure. I'm, yeah, fairly sure. Right.

1:06:13The final few clubs, I think, as Dave said, I don't think it will help you much, but it is Lazio, Mallorca Online and Atalanta.

1:06:22Charlie Eccleshare:Bloody hell. That can't be Scaloni, can it? Why? Just a bit glamorous for a defender, isn't it? Lazio? Why would he have gone there? It feels very number 10-y, but who else have we got left? But what's the logic there? Why do those clubs need a full-back any less than they need a number 10? Italian Lazio have got loads of defenders. They're Italians, aren't they? They don't need to import South Americans. No, exactly. It didn't strike me as someone who had that sort of career, but I don't know anything about Leonor Scaloni's career so that's all I've got. So it's on all of our heads now, Leonor Scaloni.

1:06:59We're going to have to go something, aren't we? I mean, we've basically got, it's basically, I mean, Scaloni is the only name we've really happened upon. I've never said this about a million times. Pandiani, he didn't play for West Ham.

1:07:08Charlie Eccleshare:I'm not, I don't think he did. I think he was just Birmingham. I think he was, yeah. I only think he played only he hadn't said Birmingham. Well, let's go Scaloni. We don't have anything else, do we? We're going to go for Leonor Scaloni, Bobby. Leonor Scaloni is correct. so I thought Charlie you talked you into the two-pointer there but yeah Scaloni memorable loan spell like genuinely quite a memorable loan spell at West Ham famously gave the ball away to Gerrard didn't he but yeah Lionel Scaloni World Cup winning manager I'll take it I'll take it it's alright in this scenario a point is a point right it's career we go 10 football cliches 9 question 3 for career we go what difficulty level would you like I say we stick with the threes, do you reckon?

1:07:52Yeah.

1:07:53Charlie Eccleshare:I think so, yeah, why not? We'll go for a three, please, Adam. Right, to take a commanding four-point lead in the final round, it's Chelsea at the DW. Oh, Crespo. Crespo, the opening day, wasn't it? Against Wigan. 5-0-6? No. Oh, Christ. Leeds played Wigan in 0-4-0-5, so I think they went up that season. You're right, it's 5-0-6. it was Jose's second season yeah he scored like a great left foot curler didn't he last minute or something was it was Wigan was it Wigan were just off that year yeah yeah it was their first game yeah alright we'll go Crespo 05-06 Crespo 05-06 Wigan 0 Chelsea 1 goal scorer in the 90th minute Hernan Crespo well played that's good wow well done wow okay that's really good happy hunting That's a proper getting one.

1:08:51Spot on.

1:08:53Charlie Eccleshare:13-9. This is huge. Right. Question three, please. Okay. So this player. There's slightly more clubs, so I'm going to give you three here. First clubs, Botev, Vratza, Siska, Sofia, and Servet. Okay. Could you spell the first one for me, please? Yeah. B-O-T-E-V-V-R-A-T-S-A. Vratza. yeah then Sofia and Servet Servet Jesus I mean Bulgarian Bulgarian yeah Bulgarian who went to Switzerland and then turned up in the Premier League right think of your Bulgarians first of all I mean I mean yeah Berbatov didn't play for Servet right he would have been at Leverkusen early doors yeah I don't know of him playing for them Petrov Petrov Stylian or Martin Stilion or Martin Dutch or otherwise

1:09:57Charlie Eccleshare:Oh God Was like a Stoichkov or an Ivanov Didn't play in Premier League Didn't play in Do we know this guy played in the Premier League All of them played in the Premier League Oh they all play in the Premier League Yeah man Any Chuck some Bulgarians around first before we commit to a two-pointer Not that many others Are there Petrov feels good Stylian Stylian or Martin I feel yeah where was Martin Petrov before Man City where did they get him from it would have been Servet no no he'd have gone somewhere else yeah Spain he was more Stylian but based on nothing any more Bulgarians I can't think of any other famous Premier League Bulgarians should we should we go for two points I think we have to yeah at some point we're going to have to roll the dice I think sure thing it's alright it's alright we've got three this is the first of three final questions.

1:10:49Charlie Eccleshare:We might be okay. Bobby, next clubs, please. Okay, so the next three clubs are Wolfsburg, Atletico Madrid and Manchester City. Okay, yeah. So that's, yeah, Martin Petrov. That's Martin Petrov. Happy with that? Yeah, yeah. Martin Petrov. Martin Petrov is correct. Well played. That's two points. Stay in the room. Career we go. You lead by 13 points to 11. Question four. Are you going to turn the screw? Should we stick with three? I think we just keep going with three. We'll go for a three. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Right, for difficulty level three, for three points, it's Bolton Wanderers at Highbury.

1:11:34Charlie Eccleshare:Okay. The first one that comes to mind, which is obviously a very big name, is Michael Ricketts. Yes. I think he scored. I won a two. Yeah, the season he scored loads and then got an England call-up somehow. Yes, that's a great shout. Was that 0-1, 0-2 or 2000, 2001? I think it was... Because he got moved to Middlesbrough, maybe 0-2. I feel like McLaren got him. Yeah, he moved to Middlesbrough 2-0-3 because he ended up at Leeds in 0-4. Yeah, I mean, I'm pleased with that. There's no... Just going through, there's no... Klaus Jensen scored that goal, but that was for Charlton, wasn't it? The sort of long-ranger-ish.

1:12:20Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh, I do like Ricketts. Anyone else? Did Rady Jayidi get a last-minute header or something? Did Gary Speed score? Gary Speed, potentially. I can't picture. I can think of a few goals at the Reebok, obviously. Yeah, Stelios. Stelios, yeah. Ricketts sounds good. He definitely did score. it's just the season it's I would I would veer towards 0-1-0-2 for Ricketts what did 0-1-0-2 or what's the other one or 2000-2001 but I feel like 0-1-0-2 I think that's the year the season he got his England cap so he must have been he must yeah and then he probably got to move off that and then it all went to shit and then here we are yeah right we'll go Michael Ricketts 0-1-0-2

1:13:08Charlie Eccleshare:Michael Ricketts 0-1-0-2 Arsenal 1 Bolton 1 goal scorer seven minutes from time. Listen, fair play. It's Michael Ricketts. Great work. Great work. Fucking hell. I was, I was Uri Gellering you to just pick the season before that. Look at you, listening to you go around the houses with some other players, always galling to hear. But no, you're always going to return to Michael Ricketts. You lead 16-11. Lads, we need this one. Question four, please. Right. Okay. Question four. First player. First two clubs here. Charlois, pronunciation, and KV Michelin. Right, Belgian. Yeah. Belgian citizen. Loads of Watford players in the last few years have played for Charlois because we've got a relationship with an agent who loves to move players around those clubs.

1:14:02But they're surely not going to pick any fucking random Watford slug from the last few years. It could...

1:14:08Charlie Eccleshare:Don't rule them out picking a Watford slug. it could be I feel like Trossard might have played for that second one who's the second club sorry KV Mechelen so we need I mean we're basically we've got a five point deficit we've got to get two oh and even two and they just need a one Christ but then if we get nothing we can't really risk going for three and getting nothing can we I guess we've got to make them win it yeah so let's go for two I guess next clubs we could sound slightly less crestfallen that would be great Charlie just it's fine it's Christmas in a way Bobby next clubs please next two clubs are Anderlecht and Newcastle oof okay so that could be like a Philippe Albert if he came if he's coming straight to the Prem from Belgium um was he a product of the Belgium did he not ever play in Switzerland was he Belgian sorry yeah yeah what Philippe Albert was he Swiss he's Belgian oh fair play so other Belgians for Newcastle?

1:15:10I can't think of it.

1:15:11Charlie Eccleshare:Oh, Mark Hottinger. Mark Hottinger. Was he? No, wait. Mark Hottinger. Wait, was he Swiss? He was Swiss, wasn't he? He was Swiss.

1:15:22Charlie Eccleshare:Straight back at you. He's Swiss. Chocolate's chocolate at the end of the day, isn't it? Yeah, I'm just thinking whether Albert, like, did he move to Italy or somewhere first? I don't know where Newcastle signed him from. I don't think it was Anderlecht, to be honest. but we don't have a Belgian is there a more recent Belgian for Newcastle I mean he's obviously like a cult hero I feel like he might have come from Anderlecht I don't think he was anywhere he played at USA 94 yeah so he was big he joined them after that didn't he yeah but I don't think he was playing in Italy or anything like that in France and I don't think he was in Germany so I think Anderlecht were strong back then yeah so I think it's perfectly feasible fucking hell I can't think single other Belgian if we get what's the matter if we get one do we have to get two then we're done we're done I'm afraid let's go with I mean unless you've got any other ideas no just quickly just quickly any goalkeepers oh yeah yeah Belgian goalkeepers from the low countries they had cruel yeah Belgians

1:16:34fucking Belgians

1:16:35Charlie Eccleshare:Let's go for Philippe Albert. He's a cult hero. I don't mind getting this wrong if we go for someone like that. If we go for someone peculiar, I think we'd be doing ourselves over. Philippe Albert? You're looking in Philippe Albert? Are we? Where did he go after Newcastle? Not a clue. Not a clue. I mean, no one gave a shit about him after that. There's no recent Belgians either that we're forgetting. They haven't had a Belgian international like one of their good generation. No, none of the generation. I don't think. and Belgium ceased to be relevant for a long period in between in a Premier League football sense there's no way there's no way they've not had like because you know Newcastle have a habit of being one of those clubs where players go there for like a weird little loan spell and then end up playing for another British club that we all remember like Mikel Marino yeah yeah and Saha and Ivan Toni yeah that is possible someone who just pitched up there for a few games I think we should go for Philippe Albert yeah yeah yeah let's just The answer, Bobby, we think is Philippe Albert.

1:17:37Philippe Albert. Okay. The next two clubs were Fulham on loan and ended at Charlois. It is Philippe Albert. Oh, no! Fuck off! Philippe Albert. Who remembers Philippe Albert at Fulham? Was that when they were still in like Div 1? Yeah, when they're part of their glamorous Tigana. Keegan. Yeah, 98, 99. I think it might have been Keegan. Obviously had him at Newcastle. So, yeah. Philippe Albert. Well played. almost talked yourself out of it with some obscure names there but Philippe Albert well played so that's two points to football cliche we're alive

1:18:12Charlie Eccleshare:okay the score we're hanging in there we've taken it to the final day we've done what we set out to do I haven't even bothered getting my transistor radio out for this one career we go it's your final question of the final round you need only a point it depends how much of a flourish you want to go out with but what are you going to go for we'll stick with the threes shall we I think, yeah, just keep going with the three. It's been an enjoyable round, I have to say. Yeah, exactly. So let's keep it going. If you don't get this and we get three, it's tiebreak time and we'll have to do this all again.

1:18:44Charlie Eccleshare:Right. For three points to march over the line, it's Leicester at Anfield. Oof. Yeah, we'll go for level one if that's right. That, Bobby, would have been Liverpool at Old Trafford. I can say. Leicester Leicester at Anfield I initially thought of that Geezer who scored two own goals is it Valface obviously no right Leicester at Anfield surely that I think that's how his Wikipedia page starts Valface he is the Geezer who scored two own goals the season they won the league they lost at Anfield didn't they great Vardy scored but that was at Leicester that was the best sir Did they score at Anfield away or did they just lose?

1:19:35I think they lost 1-0, possibly. Okay. Okay. Right. Okay. So, what about earlier? What about... Still alive, lads. Still alive. Charlie's perking up. Shit. What about, like, you know, the Heskey score there before he moved? Did Tony Cotty score in 98, 99? Steve Guppy. Steve Guppy. More... I mean, Vardy obviously is an option. It could even be Vardy like 16, 17. What about the COVID season when Liverpool were shit? There was one season as well where Ulloa got top scorer. I wonder, did he? Right, that was 14, 15, was it? I think he scored, we had it recently, he scored 11 goals. Yeah, and I don't think Liverpool were that good until 17-ish.

1:20:26I have absolutely no recollection of him scoring that. No, and Vardy has scored more than 11. Yeah, Vardy seems, I can picture it. Should we go maybe like Vardy the year after, like 16-17 or something? Or 17-18? Let me just have one more little think. Yeah, yeah, go for it. Oh, fuck, why do we go three? That's all right. Damari Gray is in my head, but that could just be absolutely mental. Didn't he score, oh, he scored at Old Trafford, he scored a screamer. Maybe I'm thinking of that. I know this is a tangent, but didn't Gerrard sign him for a Letivac? So, potentially. Maybe, I like that. Did he score at Anfield?

1:21:09He said, I'll have a bit of that. His audition at Anfield to get the Letivac. Go with it, I would say. If that's what he said to you. You seem such a logical guy, I wouldn't put it past you. Oh, I don't know. Shall we go? We probably just have to go Vardy and a year. The year after. Go Vardy and pick a year where Liverpool didn't perform as well. All right, we'll go Jamie Vardy, 16-17.

1:21:35Charlie Eccleshare:You're going for Jamie Vardy, 16-17. This is to win it. Liverpool 4, Leicester 1. Come on, Vards. Goal scorer after 38 minutes. It's Jamie Vardy. Oh, man. That was lucky. 19 points in the cliches quiz. I don't I'm pretty sure that's a record of some kind that was proper happy hunting grounds that was very impressive yeah very very good that was great I mean that that was a total guess but the hubris of not going for one as well I really thought that was going to bite you in the arse Bobby you were on pretty safe ground I can tell you because Vardy scored there in 17-18 as well okay in a two-under feat so did Mary Grey get many no I can confirm he did not nor did Leonardo Ojoa.

1:22:27Charlie Eccleshare:Anyway, 1913. Could we just have our final question in? Yeah, we will. All right. So the final player, he started his career's first three clubs were Dynamo Zagreb. Then he was on loan at Croatia Sezvete and on loan at Inter Zabrezic. Fuck's sake. Okay.

1:22:47Croatia Sezvete and Inter Zabrezic. Christ, Dario Serna. Who knows? Somebody can't play in the Prem, did he? Yeah, I mean, any number of Premier League Croatians. Harry Redknapp would fucking love this round.

1:23:01Charlie Eccleshare:What about Modric? Didn't he do the rounds in Croatia before he sort of found his feet? Oh no, I think he played in Bosnia. Oh, one of those teams, not Bosnian. Can we hear them again, please, Bobby? Not the second one, unless it's a sort of a real trick. Yeah, so Croatia, Sazvete, and Inter Zaplejic. Zaplejic. Z-A-P-R E-S-I-C and Zapozic. We've got obviously nothing to lose. Let's go for Modric. Let's try and get some glory. Possible that he played that that's a Bosnian club. I've got, I'll tell you what, I'll tell you what, Bobby, we're going to go for Luka Modric, but before you tell us whether we were right or not, let's hear the rest of the clubs.

1:23:41Charlie Eccleshare:Yeah, of course. Okay, so we're going to go for Luka Modric, who I'm sure did the rounds early doors in the Balkans. All right, so you've locked in Modric, but I'll go through the rest of this player's career. So the next three clubs were Arsenal, Shakhtar, Donetsk and Flamengo. Oh no! It's bloody Eduardo! Eduardo? Yeah! Bloody Eduardo, yeah. So Eduardo De Silva ended his career at Atletico Paranense and Ligia Warsaw. 29 goals in 64 games for Croatia. Eduardo De Silva. There we go. You had to go, didn't you? Luka Modric did have a long spell at a Bosnian team. so yeah knowledge what use would have two points been anyway really um a absolutely storming win for career we go taking the all-time title between us the calcutta cup of the cliches it is a very rugby score that as well 1913 uh i've got no complaints about that whatsoever that was a brilliant quiz um and just goes to show that career we go are the unparalleled football quizzes out there.

1:24:50Charlie Eccleshare:You do it as your bread and butter and it shows. It shows. Come and talk about football language, boys. We need to bring the cliches round back, don't we? Bobby, well done. How do you feel? Yeah, that was really, really enjoyable. I think bringing in Amo for Theo, no offence, Theo, for that last round was a real, real help. Yeah, you fear for Theo really after this, don't you? We do. We do fear for Theo. That was huge, that last round. superb from you guys but thank you great questions throughout so really enjoyable really enjoyable Joe that means that you you take the cliches quiz mantle into 2026 you'll be back though right this isn't the end of things yeah absolutely yeah and fair play to the lads because I was an absolute passenger for that last round did remember the Crespo goal but I helpfully said against Wigan yes it was at the DW stadium but yeah no really really enjoyed it and yeah always up for doing it again And finally, Elite Operator Amo, superb from you.

1:25:51Charlie Eccleshare:But now I feel my conscience is completely clear about planting a clip art Christmas tree over the A in your football cliches logo. Listen, that's fair. After Michael Ricketts' guess, I'm happy. You can do whatever you want. I'm on cloud nine after that. I am buzzing. I am buzzing after that. Well, I'm glad someone's happy. Thanks to you, Dave Walker, as well. Thank you. Thanks to you, Charlie Eccleshare. Thank you. And thanks to everyone for listening.
