0:00They say you should learn something new every day, like how you should only drink Jägermeister at zero degrees Fahrenheit, ice cold, like those frozen cavemen they find, which makes you wonder, what would a caveman think of Jägermeister? Well, if you served it warm, he'd probably throw it in your face, say, Oonga Boonga and storm off. And nobody wants that. So drink it cold or not at all. Jägermeister. Damn, that's cold. Drink responsibly. Jägermeister liqueur, 35 % alcohol by volume. Imported by Masked Jägermeister, U.S., White Plains, New York. Spring Fest means more sun, more fun, and more free at Lowe's.

He's round the goalkeeper, he's done it! Absolutely incredible!

1:57Charlie Eccleshare:and happy hunting grounds. Brought to your ears by Goalhanger Podcasts, this is the Football Clichés Quiz 23.

2:14Charlie Eccleshare:Hello everyone and welcome to Football Clichés. I'm Adam Hurry and this is the 23rd edition of the Clichés Quiz. On Team Clichés with me this time, Charlie Eccleshare. How are you doing? Very well, thank you. Three wins in a row for us were followed by two consecutive defeats to a Jonathan Wilson-inspired Libero and to today's opponents. Which football cliches is going to turn up? Yeah, that is very much our form, isn't it? We're mid-table, we win a couple, we'll then lose a couple. And that's fine. There's no logic behind it, it's not complacency. You can't be complacent with a quiz, it doesn't work.

2:47Charlie Eccleshare:Alongside you, in place of David Walker, it's Nick Miller. Welcome to you. You know the opposition well. What's the game plan? psychological warfare i think okay they know their stuff but they're weak mentally so just great news for a quiz keep at them keep at them excellent we'll do right our quiz guests today for the 14th pod v pod edition of the cliches quiz they're back for a fourth go at the people's podcast quiz derby it's fundamental trivia merchants multi-platform top operators and live quiz impresarios career we go welcome to you first up bobby forgehe welcome back to the cliched quiz cheers adam yeah really really looking forward to this um you prevailed 2-1 in our epic quiz trilogy that spanned nearly two years actually and you could have walked away from this rivalry forever uh with the upper hand but you're back no we're back we just we're like roy hodgson you know just thought you know we'll have one one more go one more bite of the cherry so no yeah well looking forward to we'll be your gary cotterills today then in that case um alongside you uh recalled to team career we go in place of joe it's theo laycock how you doing yeah very well adam yeah i was gutted to miss out last time but excited to to be back how much are you going to miss joe's conversational spanish do you think i think it could could prove critical to our to our chances but um he'll be listening he'll be listening and supporting us uh from from home where's the first language i go for in the dubbing round for some reason i don't know why um completing your trio it's eamon dalton welcome back thanks so much yeah happy to be back and Yeah, as you say, 2-1 ahead.

4:22Next victory is huge. This is, whoever gets the next one, who knows which way this is going to go. I feel like this is a new series we're starting here.

4:29Charlie Eccleshare:I feel like the last one has been bookended. I don't know how everyone else feels about that. Best of five doesn't really appeal to me, but you only know victory in this matchup. So is it fair to say that you're quizzing without fear today, aren't you? I think so, yeah. I have that kind of youthful exuberance that, you know, I'm playing, just playing free, off the cuff. But maybe the longer I get into it, the more bogged down I will be kept. You're hiding that exuberance quite well, but let's go. Right. A reminder of the format for everybody. Each team will pose three rounds of five questions to the other team.

5:00Charlie Eccleshare:A total of 25 points will be on offer. Round one from football cliches will be the trivia round. Charlie, would you kick things off, please? Question one. Which pitch marking was first experimented with in the 1981 charity shield? Wow. which pitch marking Spurs Ashton Villa I think let's just go through the options of famous pitch markings corner flag they're only infamous pitch markings I suppose the boob shaped ones of the penalty area in their 20s they could count as infamous I'm not sure what about the did the corner flag marking turn from straight to curved or something like that what about the technical area on a for the managers is that a pitch marking it's not really is it but off the pitch isn't it and i think that would have just maybe come later anyway possibly i'm basically counting anything painted in white basically okay in a traditional sense yeah my gut would be to go for the corner flag marking just because i wouldn't be i'm sure i've seen you know watching highlights from really old games i can picture everything like you know d bulk six yard area yeah semi-cycle area but i wouldn't be able to remember the corner flag markings so that'd be the only only thing possibly unless there's anything else no let's go let's go corner flag markings you're going for the quadrant is that right yes the quadrant yeah charlie i'm afraid that's incorrect the answer is the 10 yard marker from the corner flag oh so you were pretty close you were 10 yards away exactly yeah yeah it's literally 10 yards away those are the margins in this group in the history of football experiments that might be the dullest experiment of all time um but you reckon there was um uproar at the time yeah um yeah but the coverage zoomed in on this mark and said like yeah they're experimenting with this today and there's like a photographer set next to it completely non-plus by the whole thing but yeah i don't know what incident sort of brought this in but yeah that is the answer the 10 yard marker from the corner flag interesting Right, no points for you so far.

7:10Charlie Eccleshare:Nick, hit them with question two, please. Question two. Diego Maradona, Davos Suca and Diego Simeone were teammates for one season at which club? Okay, Diego Maradona, Davos Suca and Diego Simeone. Simeone. Okay, so... Who did Maradona play for late in his career in Spain? Did he... He was at... Did he go to Lexical? He was at Sevilla. He was at Sevilla. was Davos Sukar at Sevilla? he was in Spain I can't see Sukar going to South America to be honest this would be probably early 90s early 90s maybe I reckon Sevilla is a good shout we go Sevilla? yeah why not yeah alright we'll look in Sevilla that is correct well played well in they wore the Super Nintendo shirt as well just to complete the scene Right, you're off the mark, Corey.

8:08Charlie Eccleshare:We go. Question three in round one. Former Everton striker Joe Max Moore, playing for the USA at the Nou Camp, scored the first ever goal to be scored in which specific circumstances? Ooh, okay. Playing for USA, was he? Sorry. Yes. It wasn't the, you know, what do they call it when you've, instead of like a penalty shootout, you've got the ball at the halfway line, you've got a one-on-one with the keeper. Do they trial those in America? games um oh my god just just say the question again sure specific circumstances former everton striker joe max moore playing for the usa at the new camp scored the first ever goal to be scored in which specific circumstances god could it be not like a golden goal or actually like it's way after that or it's after like extra time in general because he was early 90s i think was he yeah i have no idea i feel like it would be worded differently the question if it was if it was like silver or golden guy i feel like it's something not necessarily a rule but maybe i didn't put a lot of thought into the wording i'll be honest with you okay why are the usa playing at the new camp was it oh was it the olympics was that 92 92 yeah the first goal in the because football wasn't always in the olympics was it yeah maybe the first ever goal at the olympics yeah let's go for that but no no i think that might be a good shout but well they're fighting amongst themselves guys no no no i told you i'm told you we're weak yeah we all right let's go for it let's do that you know but yeah that's good a guess you're going for the first ever goal scored in football at the olympics correct i can tell you you are royally wrong okay football was very much part of the olympics for a long long time before that right right okay i can tell you it's the first ever goal scored from an indirect free kick awarded for a back pass handled by a goalkeeper in professional football history.

10:09Of course. I thought that might be where your head was going.

10:12Charlie Eccleshare:I really thought Theo was going to see that through. My head was going that I thought football was maybe there longer and it wasn't professional or something. The logic was going so well. You spotted the Olympics. It was going to be such a great team effort. But yeah, it was conceded by Italy's Francesco Antonioli in the group stage at the 1992 Olympics. Right, one out of three so far. Charlie, hit them with question four, please. Question four, name five foreign Premier League players with the first name Dennis, and that can be spelt two Ns or one. Okay, what question? Dennis Suarez. Erwin Bergkamp.

10:52Undav. Undav, yeah. Undav with a Z? Is that cool? So let's go Bergkamp, Erwin.

11:00Charlie Eccleshare:Just to be clear, you can't have Dennis Undav. Yeah, okay. I do not believe that to be a derivation of Dennis. Burkamp Owens, Suarez. Dennis Suarez, yeah. Is Zachariah Dennis? Dennis Zachariah, yeah. Is he Swiss? Swiss guy. And, okay, come on. What about Emmanuel Dennis? Is it first name's Dennis? First name only. First name's Dennis Emmanuel. Dennis comma Emmanuel. as he's written in the phone book. Dennis, Dennis, Dennis. Oh my God, this is terrible. Oh, Dennis Romadal. Romadal. Perfect. Fair play. Right. So yeah, Burkham, Irwin, Suarez, Zakaria, or Zakaria and Romadal. Very good. Well played.

11:49Who else could they have had, Charlie? They also could have had Dennis Preit. Oh yeah. Dennis Zerbeni from Norwich. That's a deep cut. This is another one. Dennis Straclassi. Straclassi. Yeah, yeah. Everton, yeah. And Dennis Odoi of Fulham fame. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Very good. Yeah, superb question. I like that.

12:09Charlie Eccleshare:Right. Two out of four so far for career. Here we go. Your fifth and final question of round one, Nick Miller. What do these games have in common? Aston Villa versus Oldham in 1993. Arsenal versus Leeds in 2003. Chelsea versus Tottenham in 2016. And Chelsea versus Manchester City in 2020. I think they all decided titles, but without the title winners playing. Yes, because Leeds beat Arsenal on that one at four. That was the Voduca. Yeah, Oldham, Villa was United 93. Yeah, I think they've all made a team champions who weren't involved that day. That is correct. Yes. Okay, cool. Nice one. Superb work from you.

12:46Charlie Eccleshare:That's not bad at all. Three out of five in round one. The benchmark has been set. Over to you, career we go. Okay. Our first round is also for Paul Trivian. Titled here, not by me. Kieran Trivia so do with that one do with that one you will don't distance yourselves from that question one who's the only player to lose a Champions League final for three different teams ooh I haven't heard this one before only player fucking hell this is Champions League rather than European Cup and all that because if it was European Cup then my god right yeah yeah okay which clubs have lost a lot Atletico Madrid yes feels like they might well be involved in this United have lost two City have lost was it just that one just one yeah City have just lost to Chelsea or is there just a player who or who are really good players not to have won like Ronaldo never won it Brazilian Ronaldo I don't think he would have played in the final but I don't think he would have got to a final necessarily Gundogan he played he lost for Dortmund and City but did he lose he didn't lose one for Barca when he was there yeah so City he was there too late really wasn't he did he go straight from Dortmund he went straight from Dortmund City didn't he went straight from Dortmund City oh dear Bayern lost some around that would there have been anyone who lost for Bayern in 2012 and then for Dortmund in 2013 Matt Thomas he went the other way though didn't he oh that's annoying he also wouldn't have played for anyone else agreed but he might yeah he might have lost I don't know where to start with this I don't know what angle to approach it from.

14:27Well, there are players who might have played for a lot of clubs. Like PSG lost in 2020, didn't they? In that sort of one that didn't really count, the lockdown one. They might have had players who were at Atletico. That's a great question. It should be more well-known, this player's curse. Three different... Oh, yeah, Juve were always a sort of curse Champions League final team, aren't they?

14:51Charlie Eccleshare:Lost against Real Madrid in 1998. They've lost a load. we don't know what era it is as well because lost yeah Seidhoff didn't lose no he didn't know well I was thinking could it just be somebody who's won a lot as well I think he only would have lost with Milan yeah because he to Liverpool I've got nothing here lads I'm afraid absolutely nothing should we say Gundogan anyway that's not right but I think or is there like a Trezeguet something like that he would have lost for Juve he just seems like he lost a lot of finals he lost the World Cup final didn't he yeah Trezeguet would have lost for Juve in 03.

15:24That's probably it. Henri? No. Yeah, I was thinking Henri. I mean, is there anyone in the Juve squad in 97. He was. No, because he was at Arsenal then, so he wouldn't have been there. No, no. When you saw him in 97, 98. Yeah. No. He was still at Monaco then.

15:38Charlie Eccleshare:Oh, right. Okay. Wow. Oh, yeah. Oh, okay. I have nothing. Absolutely nothing. I really, really look forward to finding out the answer. Don't want to give this up. What about someone who's in that? No, hang on. Marseille won it before Marseille lost it before it was the Champions League and then won it when it was maybe don't know yeah they beat Milan 93 I don't I haven't got a clue I haven't got a foot holding this one we give up career we go which is a horrible sense of words to say we pass we'll go for Ilkay Gundogan anyway Ilkay Gundogan is incorrect of course but if I tell you the clubs maybe yeah sure I'll guess then just for fun the clubs were Monaco Manchester United and Juventus Evra fuck Patrice Evra is the answer yes he also won won one with Manchester United he lost two at Manchester United as well so he played in five finals lost four and three of them were for different clubs superb question fair play super never got there right okay question two please question two what was unique about Gary Pallister's goal for Manchester United against Liverpool on the 19th of April 1997 unique Oh, I wonder if that's like the earliest goal scored in a Premier League game.

16:55Do you remember I was saying the other week how they had this brief period of playing Premier League games, like 11-15 kick-offs? Was it at Anfield?

17:02Charlie Eccleshare:I've got vague memories from scoring at Anfield in a white shirt. Yeah, Beckham scored a free kick, I think. And it kicked off at 11 or something. I know the game at Old Trafford that season was in that mad early slot. So there's every chance. I think it's a great shout. I can't think of any other footballing reason. I don't know how carefully they've thought about the wording of this, but the word is unique. Is it like the only goal that was scored in the morning or something? Yeah, it could be the only AM. But then I think Beckham scored in the first half of the Old Trafford game. We can reword it to what record does it hold?

17:35Yeah, it's not necessarily unique, but it holds a unique... In that case, I reckon it's the earliest goal scored in Premier League history. I think that's spot on. I think we'll go with that, please. Okay, that is spot on. it was the earliest recorded premier league goal at 11 28 a.m. which is disgusting the anti-ronaldinho of the uh situation nice brilliant work charlie yeah well played uh that's straight away straight away diving into that premier league archive straight away just you are you are right in that season there was a spate of 11 15 yeah kickoff so around that around that month i think someone had the record at like you know 11 40 and Then Beckham got one at 11.35.

18:19Then Palace got one at 11.28. He holds the record. The only Premier League goal scored prior, before 11.30am. Before the Diet Coke break. Yeah, yeah. Or an oily sailor. All right, come on.

18:36Okay, question three is a classic of career we go. It's coming or going. So I'm going to give you a player and a club, and you tell me who he played for before and after. that club so the player is jonathan woodgate and the club is tottenham hotspur i think he signed for tottenham i think because he came back from real madrid to newcastle yeah

18:59Charlie Eccleshare:i think it's from newcastle then he went to middlesbrough yes i'm happy with it i think so so so we're gonna go for newcastle to spurs then spurs to middlesbrough that is incorrect that is incorrect so he actually he went from leeds to newcastle then to real madrid oh yeah then back to middlesbrough oh no then tottenham and then after tottenham any other ideas back to one of those clubs no so he had one season at stoke city in the premier league Fuck, yeah, completely forgettable. Wow. For us, anyway.

19:39Charlie Eccleshare:Jesus. I was wheeling away in celebration there as well. Yeah. Okay, question four. Yeah, well, unlucky. Question four. Who was the only Premier League-based player in Portugal's Euro 2000 squad? Abel Xavier. Yes, great shout. I've got a very strong image of him going mental. he goes crazy when they yeah against France I like it we'll go for Adol Xavier that is correct well played got that straight away we had that in our own chat and it took us about an hour so well played Nick's in the chat which helps

20:18we also contemplate in the Palace I think Amo said I think something Charlie would know and absolutely yes be fair you played it through his hands there yeah delighted yeah um lovely stuff that's two out of four final question of the first round is colin's john illogical so i'm going to give you four sunderland managers and you need to put them in the correct order which they manage sunderland so the four are paulo decanio gus poet dick advocate and Martin O 'Neill. Okay, so Paolo Di Canio was like 2013 kind of time. O 'Neill was before that, I'm sure.

20:58Charlie Eccleshare:Poyet was after Di Canio, right? Poyet was after Di Canio. And then Advocat was after Poyet, I'm pretty sure. Yeah, yeah. So, O 'Neill, Di Canio, Poyet, Advocat. That sounds right. Confirmed. Yeah. That is, that's spot on. Yes! Wow. Martin O 'Neill, Paolo Di Canio, Kevin ball caretaker spell one game or three games gus poye and then dick advocate yeah really well excellent work team cliches ricky sprazier is yeah brewing at this point great set of questions all round it's three three after round one and this episode is brought to you in association with nordvpn for those who don't know vpn stands for virtual private network it secures your connection protecting your personal information and online activity especially on public wi-fi a vpn can also make your phone or laptop appear as if it's in another country, which is great for accessing content while travelling.

Are you ready? Yes, let's do this. Question one. What incident is this? Come on. Come on. Yes. Yes. It's a goal. It's a goal. It's a goal. It's goal. It's a goal. It's a goal. It's a goal. It's a goal. It's a goal. Boo. Boo. It's a goal! It's a goal! Oh! Oh!

25:16Oh, God. But it was a goal. I know that much. Yeah. The goal that wasn't given. So maybe the Aston Villa-Sheffield United. Oh. There was no one there. No fans, was there? unless that guy was at home good knowledge there's lots of fans there anyway it's a fan it's not like some sort of fan radio commentary or something let's think recent big disallowed goals I guess or like VAR goals something that's very clearly a goal obviously I thought of Lampard against Germany it sounds more recent than that if you know what I mean as in incredible intuition from you his vocab based on his tone what a sixth sense that is based on the audio bit rate let me think it's a goal it's a it's a goal it's a goal I don't know I don't know either I don't know oh no stumped I don't know I've got nothing should we just go we go yeah it's too recent for Pedro Mendes as you're right it's maybe even too recent for Lampard but should we just and there was no fans for the Sheffield United one I don't know should we go Lampard's ghost goal against Germany

26:42Charlie Eccleshare:yeah why not why not okay that person you could hear talking was TalkSport's Mark Saggers who was off air at the time but was being recorded by his producer and that goal was Frank Lampard against Germany at World Cup 2010 wow great stuff well done great audio back then Yeah, you must live a professional job, talk sport. 4-3, here we go, leaders. We go into question two of the audio round. Once again, what incident is this? Listen very carefully.

27:14I know it. It's Sol Campbell getting sent off against Man United. I think at Highbury, he elbows Solskjaer and the linesman and the referee are talking. I think it's that. Is it Klanberg? Is it when... Pre-Klanberg. What's in the era that was? Before he was alive. Is it when Thierry Henry is framed between the referee and the... Yeah, it is. It is. Yeah. Yeah. Thanks again to the archive for bringing that back. I'll go, yeah. I'm pretty sure it's Sol Campbell getting a red card at Highbury against United.

27:52Charlie Eccleshare:I feared you get this, and you have got it, Bobby. Of course you have. David Soul Campbell being sent off for elbowing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer April 2003. Microphone's very close to Mark Halsey and his assistant there. Yes. I feared you'd get it, but I wanted to use it anyway. That's the kind of person I am. Right, you lead 5-3. Question three of the audio round. I'm going to give you half a point if you identify the game and half a point in addition if you identify the goal scorer, please. Game and goal scorer. Here we go. Looking at you. Lovely ball from Gascois. It's made a bit of space through South.

28:29It's gone on. It's a lovely goal. Do you know what? My initial... Did Gazza ever play soccer age? That sounds very charity game-y. That's a shout. Yeah, can we hear it one more time? Yeah, sure. Lovely ball from Gascoyne. It's made a bit of space through South. It's gone on. It's a lovely goal. Do you know what? The noise is very soccer-age. Yeah. Yes. I'm thinking... Surge? No, no. Surge played for the rest of the world. I'm thinking...

29:08Charlie Eccleshare:It's like the Wario Charlie Eccleshire here.

29:14I'm going Jonathan Wilkes. Oh, that's a good... We were literally talking about that the other day, weren't we? Wilkes is pure soccer-age. Pure soccer-age. If you're going soccer-age, it has to be Wilkes-y. Let's go Jonathan Wilkes, Soccer Aid 2004 or something.

29:32Charlie Eccleshare:You're going for Jonathan Wilkes at Soccer Aid for the full points. Here is the answer. Lovely ball from Gascoigne. Here's Jonathan Wilkes. He's made a bit of space for himself. Wilkes has gone on. It's a lovely goal. Oh, lovely. What a finish. It's a really good goal. It's a lovely goal. Dad, how good was Jonathan Wilk's dad? Yeah, he was. He was good. Can I ask why you were talking about that the other day? I think Theo shared it and he was just like, what a goal this was or something as simple as that. Brilliant. Yeah, it was literally that for a plan. I must stop sourcing my trivia questions from recent social media posts.

30:13Charlie Eccleshare:There we go. That's a lesson from me. Here we go. Bobby Faghii in Spy Carrillo goes storming. That's a 6-3 lead. Right, question four of the audio round for you guys. Who is this? dubbed into Spanish and what are they saying?

30:39Oh, I fuck off. Oh.

30:44Charlie Eccleshare:At least pretend it's difficult. Well, I think you removed crowd sound. I think it was Sir Alex Ferguson saying your job now is to support the new manager? Did they say Nuevo? Nuevo, yeah, yeah. In Trainador or something. All right, I'll go Alex Ferguson speaking to the old traffic crowd saying your job now is to support the new manager when Moyes was hired. Let's find out. When we had bad times here, the club stood by me, all my staff stood by me, the players stood by me. Your job now is to stand by our new manager.

31:24Charlie Eccleshare:Dub's quite nicely into Spanish, doesn't he, Fergie, actually? It really does, yeah. That was great, yeah. Wow. Lovely stuff. 7-3. Absolutely flawless audio round so far. Can you make it five out of five? Question five. What cult Premier League moment is this?

31:46Dear, oh dear. A very unfortunate moment. They look great when they come off, but it's actually given a problem in that. He thought he was in against Zidane then. Good job his manager was laughing. Just as well, nothing came of it. At least it was worth a try. You got it, Bobby? David Dunn? David Dunn. It has to be David Dunn. Yeah. We heard some horrible noises of recognition. Yeah. It's funny. The noise you really don't want to hear as an opponent. We'll go David Dunn.

32:20Charlie Eccleshare:You go for David Dunn. You're not going to specify anything else. You're just going to say David Dunn's entire existence, are you? David Dunn's failed Rabona attempt. Yeah, let's find out. Here's David Dunn.

32:33Charlie Eccleshare:Dear, dear.

32:39Charlie Eccleshare:Still laughing these days. Fantastic. You thought he was in a game's ad then? Good job his manager was laughing. You know what? That was everywhere for years. I haven't seen that for so long and it's absolutely cracked me up. It's great. It's like watching the Christmas special of The Office after about 10 years. Exactly, yeah. I'm glad it amused you. We are unamused because we are now trailing 8-3, which is, I fear for us, quite frankly, Charlie. Yeah, that was a big round from them. Yeah. It really was. Nick, we can do it, can't we? We can do it. Yeah, yeah, as I said, weak, mentally weak. All right.

33:18They know stuff, but get under the skin. Okay.

33:22Charlie Eccleshare:We haven't got under the skin yet, but that's still time. Five points is the deficit. Over to you, career we go. Okay, so for our audio round, we have selected five Premier League own goals. Okay. We've got the commentary here, so we're going to play out the commentary with the own goal scorer bleeped out. So you just need to tell us who is the own goal scorer. So number one. Bobby pouring out the champagne already, isn't it?

34:12I think that could be Carragher. Yes, I can sort of picture it. And he has an insane own goal record as well. He may even have got two in that game. Two own goals. But yeah, so I think Jamie Carragher there. Yeah, I agree. Nick? Yeah. Yeah, we'll go with Jamie Carragher. I can't please silence. Jamie Carragher's cheeks go as red as his shirt. That's over three minutes gone. And a defensive disaster for Liverpool. So yes, very well done. It was Jamie Carragher.

34:44Charlie Eccleshare:Rob Palmer on commentary. Always nice to see him pop up. Okay, 8-4. Question number two, please. Okay, question number two.

34:55Shelby's corner. Aga, Gerrard. Oh, this time it does go in. It's gone in off. After it was hooked off the line by Lennon. Lennon? So that's Liverpool. So it's Shelby, Aga, Gerrard. Sort of era Liverpool. What is that?

35:14Charlie Eccleshare:2011 12 yeah 2012 is it Hodgson era that kind of more Brendan Rodgers yeah right and Lennon would be Aaron Lennon yeah I guess so playing for Spurs Spurs yeah it would have been Spurs around that so a Spurs own goal against Liverpool early 2010s yeah ooh Gallas I mean it's possible I don't remember the goal but Harry Kane did he score an own goal? I'm just thinking of a sort of surprising answer here. Aga and the Liverpool team would be too early for Kane. Right, okay. So he's thwacked it against a teammate and he's gone in. Aaron Lennon. Lamella? I have a memory of... Could it be a goalkeeper?

36:00No.

36:01Charlie Eccleshare:Feels less likely to have hammered it off his own keeper. If it was a corner and Lennon was on the line. Yeah. I remember there was a game they won 3-2 Liverpool against Spurs and maybe did Vertonghen score an own goal that game I think he might have scored an actual goal I think this might be maybe even too early for Vertonghen well Vertonghen his first season was 12-13 when did Aga go? I reckon this is a bit early than that I reckon this is I actually don't think this is who were the Liverpool the Liverpool players were Shelby Shelby Aga Aga Gerrard Gerrard I think when did Aga leave well I can't believe was that yeah Aga so I don't Aga didn't play in that well he wasn't in I think he'd left by the title chasing team yeah he'd left by then so that's why he might have still been there 12-13 or more likely something like 11-12 Spurs actually beat Liverpool like the only time at Anfield in 10-11 I'd say it's too short a pause for Jan Vertonghen Gallas is not a bad shout I mean it's yeah I can sort of I mean in this circumstance I can only go with my first I've got nothing else to offer.

37:14Charlie Eccleshare:So the first name that popped into my head was William Gallas. So I suggest we go with that. William Gallas? Okay. Yeah. Who's the answer?

37:24Sylvie's corner. Aga. Gerrard. Oh, this time it does go in. It's one in or fail. Aligned by Lennon.

37:36Charlie Eccleshare:I knew it'd be someone really incongruous, in fact. That's annoying. Gareth Bale. It was the one where Lennon smashed it against his face. Yes! Do you remember that? Yeah. Oh, no. Pivotal moment, I think, in this quiz. It remains 8-4. Question three. Unlucky, unlucky. So here is own goal number three.

37:57Lisby. Yule. Jensen. Oh. Kevin Lisby. Scott Parker. Chris Powell. I think I know the game. It's been played by Charlton. Oh, it's another own goal.

38:15Twice in three minutes.

38:16Charlie Eccleshare:Oh, okay. This really is the Stadium of Fright. Yes, okay, so it's Sunderland. Right, I thought it might be the Sunderland. They scored three in one game, didn't they? Sunderland scored three own goals in one game. Did they? Because I was thinking there was a Charlton game against Chelsea where there were own goals. They said Stadium of Fright at the end. Stadium of Fright means it must be Sunderland. Yes, yes, Charlie. no but no I know up until that point though I was sure it was a different game so who oh god so one player scored two of the three goals oh yes was it like McCartney someone like that but you're I think it's a British player I think he might be Irish or Northern Irish but it's not McCartney I don't think ah yeah this brings a vague bell this was oh my god it would have been like 0-2-0-3 when they went down who was it oh my god I'm not even close to remembering the name.

39:06Charlie Eccleshare:I'm pretty sure it's a player from the British Isles. You don't think McCartney, you're sure it's not? Don't think it's McCartney, pretty sure. As soon as this name appears, I will remember. Not Gary Breen, something like that? No, no. He's not, it might even sort of be a full-back. Not a big, big-name player. Probably along the lines of McCartney, profile-wise. It's killing me. Absolutely killing me. So you're thinking, Adam, of the guy who scored two own goals in the game, but it's possible there was another own goal as well. I think there were three in one game, yeah. It's infamous, an absolutely ludicrous situation and one player scored two of them.

39:42Charlie Eccleshare:I'm also worrying now that the other guy who scored at least one of the others and may actually have scored two of them was this French guy whose name completely escapes me. But we're not talking about a well-known player here at all. But it's possible whoever scored this one scored one of the three rather than being the guy in the Sonia or two. I'm going to assume this is the guy who bagged the brace, yeah. I can't think of the French player and I can't think of the Irish slash Northern Irish player at all. It's killing me. But it's not McCartney. Oh my God. I've got nothing. I've got nothing.

40:11Would you like it one more time? Yeah, why not? A lovely array of names in the commentary. So enjoy that if nothing else. It sounds like quite the move. Yeah, it wasn't.

40:28Lisby. You're. Jensen. Kevin Lisby. Scott Parker. Chris Powell. This is good play by Charlton. Oh, it's another own goal. Twice in three minutes. This really is the stadium of fright. I'm gutted. Andy Melville.

40:55Charlie Eccleshare:Definitely not. No, no. I think McCartney's as good a shout as we may come up with. I'm afraid so, yeah. I'm not going to get any closer to this. So we'll go for George McCartney. George McCartney. Okay. Here is the answer.

41:14Lisby. Yule. Jensen. Kevin Lisby. Scott Parker. Chris Powell. This is good play by Charlton. Oh, it's another own goal. Michael Proctor. Michael Proctor, yeah. I've got to say, I'm not kicking myself for Michael Proctor.

41:34Charlie Eccleshare:I knew it was a slug, but I didn't know it was that slug. You're right, though, Adam. There were three own goals in that game. Proctor got a brace of own goals. I think that's what's sort of famous about it. But Stephen Wright was the other one? Right. Stephen Wright. Yeah. So, yeah. Played for Liverpool as well, didn't you? Yeah. That's not going to help us now, mate. Right. It's 8-4. To have any hope here, we really need to get this. Okay. Own goal number four.

42:24Southampton? It begins with a V. It's something like Vestiri. He just wallops it in. Oh, so what's the club? up sorry Southampton Virginie Virginie yeah

42:34Charlie Eccleshare:for who West Brom Sunderland oh so Southampton versus Sunderland yeah Santiago Virginie if I've got that name right Santiago V something and I'm pretty sure that's all he did in the Premier League was score that own goal yeah happy with that one yeah okay Santiago Virginie Santiago Virginie okay here is the answer four from Schneiderlin continues He's right up. It's off from Pelé. What an extraordinary own goal from Vigini. Yes. Southampton lead 1-0. And Vigini has just conjured up one of those chop horror moments of Premier League history. Well done, lads. Still in touch. Very good. Just about 8-5 as we head into the last own goal of the round.

43:24So, own goal number five is... Quasi. Kamara, of course, was looking for the goal that would settle this for them. But it isn't arriving yet. It wasn't the best of defensive headers, that, from Palace. Stone. And is that a known goal? It is! And how uncanny, how bizarre is that? It's 3-1, and that is one of the craziest own goals you'll ever see. I think I know it. I think I know it. Nick, you first. Is it Popovich?

44:00Charlie Eccleshare:Yes, that's exactly the name I had. Tony Popovich. It was like a, it sort of looped over the goalkeeper, didn't it? Yeah, off like the side of his boot. He basically swung at it or something, or it was like a back heel or something, and it was like a ludicrous home goal. The fact that we both plucked that name out from absolutely nowhere makes me very confident that it is Tony Popovich. Charlie, do you concur? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I can pitch the goal. We'll go for Tony Popovich, please. Tony Popovich, okay. Here's the answer. Quasi. Kamara, of course, was looking for the goal that would settle this for them.

44:34But it isn't arriving yet. It wasn't the best of defensive headers, that from Palace. Stone. And is that an own goal? It is! Oh, Popovich! How bizarre is that? It's 3-1, and that is one of the craziest own goals you'll ever see. I think we've seen absolutely everything in this game. What is going on? What was he trying to do there? backheeled it

45:00Charlie Eccleshare:into the top corner Tony DiRigo on Coco yeah DiRigo a great little voice yeah it was a it was a backheel wasn't it that sort of looped in it was yeah wonderful wonderful own goal well played well played guys wow I'm proud of ourselves Nick and Charlie for dragging ourselves back into contention here after a frankly sensational audio round from career we go well times two really it's 8-6 career we go lead we'll be back very shortly with the Climactic Round 3. See you surely.

47:14Charlie Eccleshare:welcome back to the 23rd football cliches quiz kariwigo are back for a fourth crack at us and they lead 8-6 as we head into the final round. Round three, we will alternate our questions to keep the tension going. Football Clichés will, of course, be doing happy hunting grounds. What's your round going to be, career we go? So our final round will be career we go, our title round, which simply I'll list out a player's career club by club. If you get them after the first section of clubs, it's three points, second, two, and final section, one point. OK, we'll kick things off with happy hunting grounds.

47:49Charlie Eccleshare:you will choose a difficulty level between one and three and you'll get the commensurate number of points if you get the goal scorer and season. As always, no answers from the 2024-25 season will be accepted. That will continue to be the rule until the end of this season and you are not allowed to guess Erling Haaland either. Right, what difficulty level will you go for first? Well, firstly, yeah, shall we go? You guys are so good at it, so yeah. well well i was just gonna say firstly thanks for launching your website in time for this quiz i've had plenty of practice i thought i was better than i was but i'm averaging about three level three a day it's finding a single i haven't seen you threatening the leaderboard in any any context i have to say it's disappointing quite a few of our discord members uh at the top of the table pat noon sam huxley they're always there thanks to your discord sort of users for uh for letting people know about our daily game but it does worry me about the kind of crossover of catchment areas between our podcasts there's a real limited pool of people isn't there really but still don't mind that don't mind that at all um i think sport will worry for us anyway to be fair you blaze the trail you blaze the trail um okay right are you gonna go for a level three is that right let's go level three so yeah okay your level three have a go at this swansea city at St.

49:09Charlie Eccleshare:James' Park. Crisis, right? Okay. Right, so... The charity year is over. It's time to claw back some points. So, okay. Michu. Yeah. What was his season? 12-13. 12-13. Was it 11-12? Was it 11-12? Yeah, maybe 11-12. And Newcastle were... Newcastle were in the league both those seasons. Oof. Baffertinby Gomez. Wilford Boney Wilford Boney when was he when was he around 14, 15 maybe 15, 16 something like that post Michu era maybe he'd already gone to City by then I think so I'm not sure nothing's come into mind as in I can't picture a goal I could imagine Michu scoring there but that could just be my one technicality I forgot to mention no half points on offer this time as was the standard last time so you will have to get the full compliment.

50:09What was the game? Was there, no, it wouldn't be. Allardyce was laughing at Chico Flores. Oh, yeah. Was he Newcastle manager then? I think that was at Swansea. I think he was West Ham manager. Yeah, he left Newcastle, yeah. I say, I reckon Michu 12-13, he scored a lot of goals. Was he definitely 12-13 was the good season, was it? I think so. Yeah, because he scored in like, I think Ferguson's last game at Old Trafford, I think he scored a lovely little lovely little goal we'll go I'm happy with Meechu Meechu 12-13

50:41Charlie Eccleshare:you're going for Meechu 12-13 you pondered 11-12 2012-13 Newcastle 1 Swansea 2 goal scorers for the Swans that day Jonathan de Guzman and cometh the hour cometh the man Meechu oh wow that was lucky I really thought I thought you'd go for the other season I'm annoyed I'm annoyed it's 11-6 we really needed that already right question one for the final round from you please career we go okay so player number one started his career in 2006 and ended it in 2023 his first two clubs for three points were psg and liverpool right feels gettable my first guess someone like david and gog i'm just thinking someone who would have moved to liverpool pretty young but must have been somewhere or may well have been somewhere first and it's too late for Letelec and Cinema Ponga yeah what about Sheiru that's why I was going to say Sheiru okay so Ngog is a good shout don't mind the idea of him playing till 2023 either because he was young then and still was still knocking around in recent memory he was their sort of nominal backup to Torres exactly yeah so that was I remember him playing in around like 09 yeah so which would sort of follow that time period what trap may we have fallen into here otherwise.

52:01Yeah, unless this is just someone who was at PSG for a while and joined Liverpool as a legit biggish signing. He's definitely a young player though.

52:08Charlie Eccleshare:We're talking pretty young. That's a 17-year career. But it's possible they were at PSG for a while before joining Liverpool. They wouldn't necessarily have had to join Liverpool when they were young. The only other one I can think of that would have gone from PSG to Liverpool was I think Sacco went that way. But I think that's probably a bit too... I think he probably started earlier than 06. So when Saka was at Liverpool in the Christambul season, was he? That sort of time? Yes, he was. So let's say mid-20s then, because he wasn't young then, was he? He was mid-20s. So yeah. But he wasn't there.

52:48Charlie Eccleshare:I don't think he played until 2023. I don't have a reason not to. Oh, man. It sounds as plausible as in go. That's the thing. that's yeah fuck set the cat amongst the pigeons three though is it worth gambling or do we go for two keep it keep it relatively tight if it's either of those then the two will almost only give it away I'm not confident enough to go for it yet Charlie as much as I like your David Ngo shout yeah I just remember last time threes were quite hard to come by yeah and if we feel we've got an opportunity but I mean I don't even know definitively Ngo was at PSG In that case, I feel like we should definitely go for two.

53:27Charlie Eccleshare:Don't you? On that basis alone? I guess, yeah. Yeah. You're going for two? Yeah. Okay, so his next set of clubs were Bolton Wanderers, Swansea and Ream. Yeah, he did go to Bolton, didn't he, and go? Yeah, so it is and go. Okay, sorry Charlie, but it was worth doing. It was worth doing. We will go for David Ngo. David Ngo is correct. Well played, but two points takes you up to eight. Yeah, it was the Mamadou Sakho trap that was set, but he actually started his career a year after. Did he? We should get an extra point for identifying the trap. That's in the spirit of things. Wow. 11-8. As we go into question two, what difficulty level will you go for this time?

54:11Charlie Eccleshare:Should we go for another three? That was a complete guess, so maybe a two safer. I think stick with three, though. Yeah. I think we typically can at least come up with a good guess. Okay, it's a bit rash. All right, we'll go for three. We'll go for a level three. Okay, level three. This is big boy stuff. Fulham at St. Mary's. Level two is dead. Fulham, St. Mary's, right. Another huge moment, I think, for this quiz. All right, so Louis Saha scored a lot of goals in the first half of 03-04. whether or not they played Southampton at home in the first half of the season. He would have also played 0-2, 0-3.

54:59Yeah, he would have played 0-2, 0-3. And they'd already moved. They moved into St. Mary's 0-2, I think, was it? No. They were there 0-2, 0-3, I think, anyway. Mitrovic also scored a lot goals. What about, yeah. When was Southampton more recently? well they were here obviously last season doesn't count but they were here last season the season the season before they got promoted the season that went down was 22-23 they went down and were quite bad they went down with Leeds and Leicester okay who was good for Fulham then did they have Raul Jimenez then I think it was pre-Jimenez Jimenez would have been at Wolves then wouldn't he yeah oh no goodness what about the era when Southampton like Pochettino know coming like 12 13 13 yeah that sort of is more of a safe oh i tell you what we're down though for a good bit weren't they 13 14 steve sidwell scored seven premier league goals oh yeah we know that don't we yeah i can't believe you pre-echo shared this question we could we could just go sidwell yeah i've said 13 14 why do you know that we do a trivia pod twice a week hello barrel if you'd like to hear more about Steve Sidwell's season yeah tune in to the Patreon next week the I don't know but if someone like I feel like Asaha or Mitrovic that's a mental shout isn't it it's mental but it's not it's not a dreadful shout is it and Southampton left me in in they were in the Premier League 13 14 weren't they alright why not we should just do that and this is the last level 3 we do aim because we need to

56:42Charlie Eccleshare:So I in, lads, Nick You might be proved right after all I know, he's right He's right He did the block It was a slow bird But it worked till the end Possibly Is it insane Is it insane to go see Steve Sidwell? Should we just go Louis Saha? Come on So Saha's gonna There's gonna be a higher chance of Saha We just might get the Yeah, Louis Saha 0-3, 0-4 Hopefully played them in the first half Louis Saha 0-3, 0-4 Southampton, nil Fulham, nil it's academic but Louis Saha never scored for Fulham at St Mary's so you've drawn a blank in question two a chance for us to draw level football cliches for question two come on okay so player number two started his career in 2001 and ended it in 2023 for three points first club was Man City then he had two loan spells at Bury Man City and two loan spells at Bury this is not definitive Nick and Charlie is it Joe Hart did he go on loan at Bury it's possible that is early for Hart he definitely retired 2023 at Celtic that sounds about right doesn't it it does yeah he retired yes borderline yeah right it would have been about then yeah because that was Ange's last season at Celtic I think he was still there yeah so he sent out on a local loan did Joe Hart start at Shrewsbury or did he go on a loan at Shrewsbury no he started there Or he was there as a kid.

58:10Charlie Eccleshare:He was like head boy at a local school or something like that. So I don't think he was like City all the way. I think they got him from Shrewsbury for like a fee as a young player. Would that not counteract this then? Would Shrewsbury not count as one of his clubs? No, it would be like you team. It's just senior clubs only, right, guys? Surely. Senior clubs, yeah. Yeah, no, that aspect will be fine, I think, Charlie. It's just whether the year works. I think it feels quite lonely. Just timing-wise, I saw him play. It was a young him play. I saw a clip of him playing in like 2008. And he was already, he was a young keeper.

58:46So if he'd been there from 2001. That's fine. That's a good shout. 22 year senior career as well.

58:53Charlie Eccleshare:Wow. 2001. It's just about possible. But if you think that he then was the Birmingham keeper, wasn't he? In like 08, 09, that sort of period. And that would have been about very early 20s, wouldn't it? Yeah. Yeah. And I don't think, say, Wikipedia would have him down as signing for Man City in 2001, even if they'd got him at like a 13-year-old or whatever, which they didn't. So maybe we do need to move on from here. Just think how old would he have been? So we're talking when he retired. He retired at the age of about 35. He wasn't old, old. He retired perhaps slightly prematurely. So let's say 35.

59:29Charlie Eccleshare:That would make him like 13 when, well done, he's 13. He's the kid from the Michael Owen video. Right, okay, let's rule him out. And it doesn't really have to be a goalkeeper at all, is it? Should we get the next two? Yeah, I think we should. I feel like it could be hard, but that would be very punchy to go for. I'm happy to stay in touch and go for two points here. Can we have the second set of clubs, please? Yeah, the second set of clubs is a slightly longer career, so three clubs here. It's the next set of clubs are Sheffield, Wednesday, Stoke City and Aston Villa. And those are perms, are they?

1:00:03Are they loans?

1:00:04Charlie Eccleshare:They are perms. Oh, okay. Okay, so we're not talking about a city stalwart by any stretch of the imagination, are we? Man City, ignore Bury on low, because that's not going to help us at all. Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke, Villa. Oh, Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke, Villa. Glenn Whelan. Glenn Whelan played for Stoke and Villa. Don't really remember him playing for Sheffield Wednesday, but it makes a lot of sense. And was he a city youth player or sort of youngster? Wait, didn't Stephen Ireland play for Stoke and Villa as well, didn't he? Don't think he would have gone to Sheffield Wednesday permanent, though.

1:00:37Charlie Eccleshare:Glenn Whelan fits age-wise, I think, a little bit more. He's more Barclays era, I would say. So it kind of works. Glenn Whelan. Do you know he started a city? No, not really. Not really. I mean, he's Irish, isn't he, Glenn Whelan? Yeah. Sort of vague memories of him being a city youth player. But anyway, Sheffield Wednesday Stoke Villa is where we're aiming for here. Did he definitely play for Villa, Glenn Whelan? I think he did but then I might be mixing him up with Craig Gardner which is I'm not joking it's a classic mix up Craig Gardner Craig Gardner was the Gardner Gardners did a sort of West Midlands yeah so we're talking we're talking mid to late Barclays era spell Wednesday then Stoke and Villa it's like properly Barclays era Stoke and Villa well we're assuming yeah we're assuming he was playing for Stoke when they were in the Premier League I think so I hope so I mean they went up in 08, 09 Yeah I think that Well Yeah As in that was their first Premier League season Stoke and Villa players Ignore the City aspect Stoke and Villa players Of the mid to late 2000s Are I think Stephen Ireland did do both didn't he Yeah Did he do Stoke?

1:01:50Charlie Eccleshare:I don't remember But he can't have still been playing He wouldn't have got the ship for Wednesday as well That doesn't make any sense They were well out of it Yeah yeah yeah true It was way too good by then I do like Whelan But I can't think of anybody else At all Stoke and Villa I feel like there would have been a lot of players. So he went to Schiffel Wednesday. He was young. He went to Bury on loan. Then he went to Schiffel Wednesday. And then he basically sort of emerged and came back up and became a Premier League player. I feel like we can do this. I feel like we should go for it. But Whelan's all I've got.

1:02:14Charlie Eccleshare:Glenn Whelan is a good shout. I'm trying to remember him for Villa. It sounds right. Yeah, I think he plays for Villa. Should we do that? If we get it, we're within a point. Oh, I thought somebody else. I thought somebody else. Fuck. Actually, I don't know if he was a City. James Chester? Didn't play for City, did he? he played for Hull I feel like he would have played for Hull in this played for Stoke he was at like West Brom and some of those places before going to Villa I think did Glenn Whelan really only retire three seasons ago as well by the way that is possible I mean like he could have just been knocking him around it's not like we would have registered any of his shall we go for it we've spent a long time on this despite saying at the start we wouldn't do that so okay on my head be it slightly we're going to go for Glenn Whelan that's leadership thanks man Glenn Whelan for two points I can't reveal the last set of clubs were Hearts Fleetwood Town Withenshaw Bristol Rovers Glenn Whelan is correct yes fucking hell I did not see that coming I thought he was going to let us down gently with that Withenshaw indeed the Stephen Island trap was set so well it really was getting the traps as well Imagine falling into the Stephen Island trap for a point, a measly point.

1:03:33Charlie Eccleshare:Would have been awful. The score is, football cliche is 10, career we go 11 as we go into question three. You're wavering on your difficulty level now, I sense. What are you going to go for? That's what we needed. I think two. That fuller one's not my confidence. What are the rest of the career's like? Are they get a ball in the first? Don't worry about that. Let's go for two. get our confidence back hopefully and then see where we end up yeah let's go for it i would say you go for level two and your combination is who has scored for brighton at molyneux brighton at molyneux oh god right so wolves they've both been in the premier league for quite a while yeah since around brighton come up 16 17 something like that yeah and wolves came up in 18 i think maybe 17 18 they came up yeah so it's it's brighton at wolves right brighton at wolves so yeah we've got aj well back obviously well yeah glenn murray was he scoring for brighton then mitoma he had a good season a few years ago brighton have obviously been better recently and Wolves have been worse.

1:04:51It could be more going for a more recent season. Like 2024 or something. Yeah. Who was that front for Brighton then? Welbeck. It would have been Welbeck again, wouldn't it? Definitely. Neil Mopay? I don't think he scored many though, did he? No. They never really had a big goal score, have they? Who takes pen? I don't know. Maybe Welbeck 23, 24 or something do you think? He's been good. I think that's a safe bet. but let's there's everything I should not say but that's probably if we've got nothing else I'm just trying to think close my eyes and envision Brighton scoring big long away end who's running over there he's a Danny Welbeck it could be it's not the game you stay up to watch is that a match today really never tuning into that I don't know I reckon was there a season when Duffy scored a few goals we're not getting Duffy that is leadership

1:05:55I'm not trying to play mind games here but I'm sensing some flailing here yeah I think Welbeck's the only double figure where Brian goes Welbeck 23-24 should we say or 22-23 I think Wolves have been getting worse so I think 23-24 is about as good as we can go Danny Welbeck 23-24 You've gone for Danny Welbeck, 23-24.

1:06:18Charlie Eccleshare:Wolves 1, Brighton 4. Surely. Goal scorers that day, Caro Matoma. Oh, nice. Pervis is Stupinian. I was going to say it. And at the double, Solly March. No! Not Solly March of all people. Not Solly March. Danny Welbeck scored their last season, which would not have been eligible, I can tell you. But that would have been the only answer. so wow we trail by a point as we go into our third question lads we could poke our noses in front here okay all right okay so your player number three started his career in 1992 and ended in 2007 for three points his first two clubs reading and newcastle right uh this i think nick shaggy islock yes that's who i think it is as well oh yes um the years work perfectly yeah I don't think we need the extra clubs here the years are perfect so he was around he was at Reading around the time that they were flirting with promotion can you flirt with promotion yes you can different episode just make a note of that one yeah and then went did go straight to Newcastle and I know that from Championship Manager yeah so other possibilities your Griffins but yeah Andy Griffin he was a you know eventually I'm really happy with Shaka Hislop here 07 is quite early because he was still at West Ham in sort of the mid-naughties but he's moved on to kind of administrative governmental kind of roles in football I feel like that may have been his he was an ESPN pundit as well wasn't he he's been an ESPN for a long time ages yes was he you know when England played Trinidad and Tobago in 2008 was he playing was he involved World Cup 2006 do you mean no didn't we play them in a friendly in that like infamous friendly that it then turned out was all about kind of backhanders and that sort of thing oh I see what you mean I'm just trying to think whether he still would have been just for the 2007 that's my only worry was he even in the 2006 World Cup squad I don't remember I can't remember he must have been he must have been he was still headed headed in didn't he but I don't remember him scoring past Shaka Hislop but maybe he did but he must have been because he was still West Ham I think was he West Ham's goalkeeper I also think he didn't I think he was at that time in 2006 when he signed for Newcastle and was at Reading he wasn't young because obviously he'd come through an unusual trajectory to get there.

1:08:46Charlie Eccleshare:And I don't think he was young, young. So it would make sense. If you add on 15 years from his late, from his early 20s, that sounds about right for him to retire. I don't remember him knocking around in the... He didn't play for sort of Championship League One clubs later in his career. And he wasn't in the Premier League, was he? Yeah. I mean, the way they're going with Happy Hunting Grounds, I think we can turn the screw here. Well, it's not our screw to turn, but you know what I mean? Scores 10-11. so if we get it on two we'll still be ahead I'll tell you what I'll tell you what question for you before we decide do you know who he played for after Newcastle was that West Ham was it just West Ham because I don't know who else he played for I think we should be brave I like Hislop yeah I like Hislop alright let's do it let's do it okay we're going to go for Shaka Hislop Shaka Hislop for three points the next set of clubs were West Ham Portsmouth West Ham FC Dallas Shaka Hislop is correct well played it's three points in the league football cliches.

1:09:42Great stuff.

1:09:43Charlie Eccleshare:It's 13-11. We go into question four for career we go. For the first time, I'm not sure if this is the first time, it is the first time that you've been behind in this quiz, I believe. What are you going to go for? So, we could go three to go back in the lead. If we get that wrong. I think go three. If twos are going to throw up Brian B. Walls, then. All right. Let's go. Come on, let's go three. Let's go three. Balls out. I like it. Who scored for Aston Villa at the Bet365. Could go for Glenn Whelan. Yeah. Glenn Whelan's a massive moment for this, Charlie. Huge moment for this pod. Oh, I think I know one.

1:10:21John Curry, go on. Did Craig Gardner score like an unreal goal for Aston Villa at Stoke? Like a volley from outside the box. Does anyone remember that? I remember him scoring. Charlie, feel free to join in. One season with that, a bit. Don't tempt me. corner headed out and he volleys it back in from like the edge of the box no for villa for villa what would that have been like 13 14 ish seems a bit does it seem a bit late for craig gardner potentially maybe yeah i was thinking there was john carew around like 0809 or something but um do you know i just if you if you can if you can let's try the goal maybe let's try and narrow down what season that could have been so no one remembers the goal so now we're kind of we're a bit screwed but no so it would have been what sponsors did that last and villa have around that what i can see in my head acorn i think it's acorn i think it's acorn we're talking acorn era acorn is is like it's like ashley young era so we're talking 07 to 11 oh maybe a little i'm I'm thinking 11-12.

1:11:30For some reason, 11-12 is now coming into my head. Okay. 11-12. Craig Gardner. Should we just go for it? Yeah, why not? Or we could just play it safe with like Benteke or Karou or Young. I don't think he's ever playing it safe with Benteke. Yeah, the problem is we just don't know any of those either. Ashley Young 07-08. I think if Ema has a specific memory of a goal, then that's better than going. 12-13, 11-12.

1:11:57Charlie Eccleshare:Also, if it's right, it's just better as well, isn't it? Okay, what is the answer here? Go on, Amo. Oh, no. Craig Gardner is the answer. And the season is, oh my goodness gracious me, it is 11-12. Craig Gardner, 11-12. Now, it's a classic HHD conundrum. Do you go with the specific memory you've got in your head that you may have just created out of nowhere? Or do you go for the percentage play but you don't know a specific incident of? You wrestle with that and you've gone for Craig Gardner, 11-12.

1:12:30Charlie Eccleshare:Stoke 0 Aston Villa 0 The goal I think you're thinking of Charlie, do you think you know what goal they're thinking of the one to strike? I do, but I wouldn't be able to say when it was 12-13, Matt Loughton Oh, Matt Loughton Outrageous goal Incredible volley I remember that, yeah Oh, not Craig Gardner 12-13, Christian Benteke did score as well as well. Sorry, lads. So the score remains 13-11. Can we have our fourth question, please? Sure. So lads, we could win it with a two-pointer. Is that right? Player number four started his career in the year 2000 and ended it in 2017. First set of clubs for three points, River Plate, Bayern Munich and Bayern Munich Zwei.

1:13:24Charlie Eccleshare:Bayern Zwei. Argentinian could it be like Dimichelis or something like that that's exactly what I was about to say that's good yeah then he went from I would suggest that he probably ended up back in the Bayern main team and then went to City or maybe somewhere in between yes if not somewhere in between he played for Malaga in that kind of mad period oh yeah I can't think of a single other I'm assuming Argentine here at least South American who would have he'll be Argentinian I reckon Pizarro Claudio Pizarro oh who's not Argentinian but could have been but did he go did he play somewhere else in Germany before going to Bayern he he played for Chelsea didn't he yeah but that was he did go yeah he went to Chelsea he definitely played for another German team like Wolfsburg or something like that I mean I think we can go go on go to the two yeah I think we need it we can't I really I really like Demichellis I like Demichellis I think there's a very small number of players this could be you know theoretically Demichellis is right at the heart of this he has worked and 2017 retirement works but I agree let's go for the two-pointer.

1:14:25Charlie Eccleshare:Okay, for two points his next two clubs were Malaga and Atletico Madrid. Nick Miller. Ooh, but no, did he... He was at Man City fairly late. Yeah, he might have gone to City after. There's a lot of time there to work with. I feel like he was pretty old and... Yeah. What season? Haggard. By the time he got to City. He was around the time of the Aguero goal, right? Demichaelis. He was certainly there when they won the league under Pellegrini. I'm not sure he was there for the first one. I think he might have joined even in that you remember that really crap summer after they won the league where they signed Scott Sinclair I think what's going around there too much the fact that Nick already mentioned Malaga it's nobody else it's definitely not Pizarro on the basis of this it's a little do you remember David Pizarro yeah you little wee David Pizarro he was like Udinese he was in Italy before should we go with Martin Demichelis yeah let's go Demichelis this is to win the quiz Martin Demichelis to win the quiz for two points the next set of clubs to a Man City, Espanol and Malaga.

1:15:24Martin De Michaelis is correct. Well played. I feel like he could have been a three-pointer there, but smartly weighted, but well played.

1:15:32Charlie Eccleshare:A huge, an extraordinary trajectory for that quiz. Charlie and Nick, nerve well held there. And career we go. I mean, we've been in your shoes. That's all I can say. Yeah. What's annoying is Nick just called it. Yeah. At the start. He was right. He was absolutely bang on. That's complete formalities. You could make this scoreline much more flattering for you, at least. It is 15-11, but let's give you your fifth and final question. What level will you go for? Level three? It's got to be a level three. Yeah, why not? It's worked so far. Absolute mentality monsters, actually. Funny you say that, Bobby, because it's Liverpool at Sheffield Wednesday.

1:16:14Okay, so... Fowler, Michael Owen, basically. Owen, 98, 99. When did Wednesday get relegated? 1990, 2000 I can picture Owen scoring there the only goal I can picture is Harry Kuehl for Leeds you know the outside of the booth and that was 1999, 2000 so they were definitely knocking about the goal for Harry Kuehl Owen scored Owen scored a lot in 97, 98 and 98, 99 didn't he and he got injured 2000, 2001 that season yeah they were already down so it could be Fowler earlier on yeah Fowler like 93-94 or 94-95 yeah he scored loads didn't he so yeah let's I reckon that's a safer bet because Owen's injuries you're not quite sure let's go should we go Fowler 92-93 you thinking maybe no that's a bit early is it 93-94 yeah alright okay we'll go Robbie Fowler 93-94

1:17:13Charlie Eccleshare:Robbie Fowler 93-94 I can tell you that Michael Owen's got a hat trick at Hillsborough in 97-98 so you could have had that 98-99 Liverpool didn't score there but on to your actual answer Robbie Fowler 93-94 Sheffield Wednesday 3 Liverpool 1 Goal score after 37 minutes Robbie Fowler Oh We'll take that 15 14 Could we have our fifth and final career we go a victory lap potentially well it is it is a victory lap but let's see how play the kids Goals of honour please career we go as Dong Fan Zhao go and get the hooks out just just leaving it for me to answer this one okay right okay so final player started his career in 1988 and ended it in 2008 first set of clubs for three points bari mantova on loan and pescara on loan imagine having this to fucking win it or stay in it wow should have done this last last question bari mantova pisa pescara sorry huge difference.

1:18:18Del Piero played for Pescar, I think, or was he kind of, am I making that up completely? He was strictly Juve. Was it like Viejo would who started at Bari? One of the big...

1:18:27Charlie Eccleshare:Viejo was earlier than that. He played for Milan in the mid-80s. And he was Sampdoria as well around that. Del Piero did sign for Juventus from somebody, but he didn't play for those three clubs beforehand. I can't remember who they got him from. Where did Baggio start, Roberto Baggio? Baggio was at Fiorentina before Juventus. Yeah. Possibly someone before that. so that wouldn't work either because he was big in 88 already. Baggio started earlier than 88 as well. Should we get the next two? Yeah, go on then. Sorry, we won't string this out. All right, the next two clubs were Fiorentina and Rangers.

1:19:02I'm going to go for Lorenzo Amoruso in my head. Reno Gattuso? Or what about that centre forward who scored about a billion goals and then hit a squash ball into his eye and was never the same again.

1:19:15Charlie Eccleshare:Three great shouts. we've got Cattuso who I don't Cattuso I can tell you Rangers signed from Salernitana so it's not him I think it's Amoruso and the third option was Marco Negri Marco Negri can't remember who they signed him from I don't think it was Fiorentina yeah but it does sound like a really career-wee go-wee person to choose I feel like Lorenzo Amoruso is a little bit too obscure they wouldn't do that to us would they I don't know Amoruso I feel stronger about Amoruso than Ado Negri I have to say but I can't remember who they signed Negri from. Just trying to remember where Negri was from because that would have been, I think it was 97 he joined Rangers and Fiorentina, like we all would have been very across Italian football at that point.

1:19:55Oh yeah. Wouldn't they have had Batistuta? Yeah, yeah. Batistuta was there like 92. Yeah, so would they have had him and Negri? I mean, I guess teams played top top. The narrative curve here is the next club is Blackburn for Amoruso. Yeah, yeah.

1:20:08Charlie Eccleshare:And at which point it would become a very viable question, I think. So I'm happy to gamble it on that Lorenzo Amoruso, to be honest. Because I think they did sign him for Fiorentina, but it's fine. Yeah, you do that. It's a scout for us because they've done us over so many times. Here we go. We're going for two points. We're going to go for Lorenzo Amoruso. Lorenzo Amoruso. Okay. So the next set of clubs were Blackburn Rovers and Cosmos in San Marino. So Lorenzo Amoruso is correct. Well played. San Marino. Well played. Football cliches. Thanks to you, Kiririgo. What an epic battle. Really, really did.

1:20:43Charlie Eccleshare:What a great advert for the People's Quiz Derby that was. Thanks to you, Bobby, Theo and Amo. I think now it's 2-2. It does become a five-part series. It does. I agree. I changed my mind. I thought I said earlier. Okay. A 31-point thriller. Nick, how do you feel? Vindicated with my, you know, mentality shout earlier on. And the nice thing is I didn't feel like we pushed it too much. So we just let them collapse on their own. Tell you what, Charlie, halfway through that audio debacle, I couldn't even look you in the eye on the Zoom. I didn't even want to look at your dejected face because I knew that you checked out to a certain extent.

1:21:20Charlie Eccleshare:But I'm glad. In the third round, you brought it back. Never stop believing. But yeah, I mean, it is one of those where, you know, they do the graphics, like longest time spent top of the Premier League without winning it to fit one of them. And there's a Shaka Hisslop link because he was part of the 95-96 Newcastle team. Oh, there we go. What a lovely ending. No one's going to listen to the episode that far. Right. Brilliant stuff. Thanks to you, Bobby, Theo and Amo. cheers Adam really enjoyed that cheers guys thank you yeah I loved it great work Nick and Charlie thanks to you thank you thank you and thanks for a great quiz guys tremendous stuff back in the swing of things thanks to everyone for listening we'll be back on Tuesday see you then
