1:03Brought to your ears by Goalhanger Podcasts, this is the Football Clichés Quiz 25.
1:16Hello everyone and welcome to Football Clichés. I'm Adam Hurry and this is the 25th edition of the cliches quiz alongside me for this one first of all is charlie echocher all the way from paris how you doing very well thank you um the cliches pod are one six lost seven in the pod v pod era
1:36Nick Miller:can we drag it level today do you think i hope so that would be nice to have that just for sort of yeah i think that would be have a nice ring to it yeah a bit of pride back uh alongside you um is Nick Miller, played 1-1-1 in Cliché's quiz history. Nick, career we go in quiz 23. So you're coming in in form. Yeah, well, I mean, 100%. And I think it was my psychological warfare that won out last time. So, you know, watch out, lads. Good to have you for this one. Our quiz guest today for the 16th pod v pod edition of the Cliché's quiz, a World Cup special, no less. It's the St George's Park Upstarts, the Press Pack Infiltrators and the Tommy Tuchel Evangelists, the England Pod.
2:26Ali Maxwell, first of all, welcome to the Clichés Quiz. Fifth Clichés appearance for you. You've done an 11. You've done an adjudication panel. You've been a quiz team member for and against Clichés. And now you're on the other team once more. You're a man for all seasons. Yeah, I wonder how many people have represented three different teams on a Clichés Quiz. That's got to be a record. uh yeah surely um but yeah great to have you alongside you first of all george elec hi george you are the third george to ever appear on cliches after american express non-understander george caulkin and comedian george lewis but it's played one lost one in the cliches quiz for you so far can you bounce back yeah our third teammate last time is david prutton who offered absolutely nothing so i'm hoping that without practice time and with a um you know a a player who's played this game many many times or be on a different team we might be okay yeah you've upgraded in many ways this time because your third team member three lions on the shirt but one turncoat on the other team it's david walker how are things things are good things are good um uh this setup has forced us to use a different Google Doc for our quiz questions.
3:40It's like England having to play away from Wembley, Charlie. I don't like it.
3:44Nick Miller:I know, yeah. It's very much uncharted territory. Yeah. Okay, the format, however, remains the same as usual, really. Each team are going to pose three rounds of five questions to the other team, and a total of 25 points will be on offer. Clichés will go first, and your round one, the England pod, will be the World Cup. Are you ready? Bring it on. Let's see if I can, you know, I know how it works. I know how you operate. I know you like to write the questions. It really has been in my head. I'm not going to lie. Okay. We didn't need to send a spy. Right. Question one. Anatoly Puzak for the Soviet Union against Mexico in 1970 was the first player to do what at a World Cup?
4:28Didn't he dink a penalty down the middle? That's why we all still call it the Puzak. if only i was i was gonna say that me and ali were putting the finishing touches on some of the questions yesterday in in the pub and ali was telling me how terrible he was at remembering basically anything about the world cup wow here we go i genuinely i feel like um we are england obviously against like Spain sort of in the current footballing era in that we come in with quite a lot of confidence that's not really based on any tangible results and we're up against a team who for quite a long time now have played the way that they know how to play exceptional as a unit and incredibly tough to beat and we're just going to have to hope that we get a few decisions go our way but knowing how you guys set the questions I'm not confident this is a pretty tough start for us.
5:26All that is very nice, but what is the answer to the question? Yeah, we need to think logically here, because unless, what do you reckon? It feels like a likely rule change, doesn't it? Like something introduced in 1970 for the World Cup, which then... Might have scored direct from a corner, which famously had been done in the Olympics, hence Olimpico, but perhaps not at the World Cup at that point. Probably not. It's not a bad show. I'm thinking along those lines, though. Like, direct from a corner or maybe it wouldn't be the first... Like, were people scoring direct free kicks in 1966 and before.
5:56I actually have no idea. I've tried to watch football from that era and it's a pretty tough watch. Could he have scored the first direct free kick in a World Cup? Is that insane? It's going to be something like that. It might be something completely mental and obscure. First red card for violent conduct? I'm not sure there was one of those before. it'll be in the introduction of something that's now a common place I think but what that is I don't know I don't know what happened in 1970 could he have gone in our first outfield player to go in goal fucking hell I've got loads of ideas here that's I'm not sure if they're good ones but at least there's something flowing of the three I prefer the first play to score from a corner it's like I don't think many other players have done that I don't think like it's not like he was the first in a long line of people getting it in from corners at World Cups.
6:49Free kicks, I sort of like. Yeah, I don't mind the free kick. Kind of like, yeah. Should we go for that? Let's go for that. First player to score a direct free kick. First player to score a direct free kick at the World Cup. The answer is slightly more boring. He was the first ever player to come on as a substitute at the World Cup. Formerly introduced at the World Cup in 1970. Half a point through a change, thank you. Yeah. A quarter of a point at best.
7:17Nick Miller:Right, Charlie, hit them with question two. Question two. Bern, Bordeaux, Nuremberg, Santiago. What years did these Wikipedia-certified World Cup battles of occur? Okay. So, Battle of Bern would have been 1950. Santiago is 62. Can we read them again? Yeah. Yeah, sure. So, Bern, Bordeaux, Nuremberg, Santiago. Okay. So, obviously, I mean, Bordeaux, is there an obvious 98, Bordeaux? Or are we thinking of another? Yeah, let's stick that in. But I'm trying to think of what the game would be. Like that, it kind of feels like we should be able to get it. I don't think we need to, we just need the year, don't we?
8:00Yeah, but there are other French World Cups, I thought. But anyway. We've got 98. Let's not worry about the detail yet. Let's get our answers down. Santiago 62 62 Yep Burn Dave Felt like you had a good Bit of burn I was doubting myself Because As in 58 Switzerland That was Where was the World Cup in 58 Sweden That's not burn then I don't know Was it Was it shared between European nations Beginning SW Switzerland too The swirled cup I've not gotten far enough into Jonathan Wilson's book an excellent bookman look we've got Germany 2006, we've got France 98, Dave we've got what was it, Chile 80 62 I think so Switzerland were they 50
9:07yeah 54 maybe because it wouldn't have been after 66 because that was here so it wouldn't be a european it could be european art but before chile so it could be it could be 58 no i think 58 in sweden so well in that case it could be because we didn't have back-to-back europe i mean i guess back then it was kind of less because 50 was in brazil Okay And then The first one was in Uruguay And then What was 34 and 38 Where were they Was it one of them, Switzerland They had battles in those days They were very sportsman like In that era
9:49Let's go for it Dave Let's go for it If that's a blank spot for you I think that's worthwhile Oh, yeah, okay. Bern, 54. Santiago, 62. Nuremberg, 06. Bordeaux, 98. Okay, so those are locked in. Yes.
10:02Nick Miller:Bern, 1954. Is correct. I don't like Charlie's tone of voice here. Santiago, 1962. Is correct. Nuremberg, 2006. Is correct. Oh, it's gotta be. Bordeaux, I'm afraid. Oh, no. Yeah, this is what I was worried about. I'm afraid it was 60 years earlier. 1938. Ugh, fuck off. I don't think we'd have got it anyway A quarter final between Brazil and Czechoslovakia The match had a series of brutal fouls by both sides Due to the lax officiating of Hungarian referee Pao von Herczka That's annoying We should have thought about that Of course it wasn't 98 What's the Battle of Bordeaux in 98? That's what I said I mean, you didn't have to get that far Into Jonathan Wilson's book to know about 98 World Cup to be fair So I don't know I think paying the blame on him is a bit harsh I promise the questions will get more recent.
10:57We haven't done you over in this respect, but you are pointless so far. We're heading to question three. Nick Miller.
11:03Nick Miller:Okay, question three. Which nation scored a World Cup final goal before the other team had even touched the ball?
11:14Was it Netherlands, 1974? They scored really early, didn't they? I mean, I'm happy to go with that. penalty in the first minute or second minute. Adam's telling us a dummy by saying that the questions are going to get more recent and giving us a 1974. It's the only one I can think of. I can't think of any... It's after 1938, mate. I think it's that. So you think it was a pen? Well, he obviously didn't get the ball, so... Been a total football, and then they get a side down. Yeah, nice. Yeah, 1974. Netherlands. That is correct. Well done. Come on. Well done, David. Well done, David. Yeah, 16 passes by the Dutch before Cruyff darted into the area and was hacked down by Bertie Vogts.
12:00Slow out the traps in the group stage. Classic England from us so far. Right. We're getting going now. But you're on the board. You're on the absolute board. Charlie, hit them with question four, please. Question four.
12:12Nick Miller:83 goals have been scored in the 22 World Cup finals to date, but only one of them was an own goal. Who scored it and when? Oh. own goal World Cup final. Did Hugo Lloris, when he had a shocker against Croatia, was that an own goal shocker? Did he miss a back pass and it went in or something like that? I did go, my mind did go to that final, but he did have a shocker. Yeah. Definitely one of the goals was like an absolute Lloris howler. But was he, I feel like he might have just given it away Yeah, I think you might be right I can see his face after There was definitely all sorts of shit in that game I think it was Mandzukic gave away a dodgy penalty or something Then, 2014
13:092022, there were loads of goals Anyone remember an OG? Did Matarazzi score? An own goal or score a goal? Oh, did he do one of each? If it's pre-98, then we're fucked. I don't think there was one. It wasn't 94, it was 0-0. 1990, I don't feel like there was one. 86, I don't feel like it's going to be any of those 80s or 70s ones. Shall I message Jonathan Wilson quickly? I think we've got to take a punt on one of our hunches. Do we need the goal scorer or just the final? You need the goal scorer and the final. And the final. So we narrowed it down to Matarazzi 06 and Loris or a French defender that passed it back to him and he missed it.
14:02It's bad that I can't conjure that image. Such an easy win for them otherwise. Dave, you choose. I haven't got a player. That's the problem. For the 2018 final. I was at that final. but I don't feel like it was Lloris I feel like he just I feel like he just gave the ball away or like got pressed I don't think it was an own goal maybe fucking hell I don't know why I'm thinking Matarazzi it could be complete bollocks but I just got a feeling that maybe can we think who scored for France that day because then no no the 2006 that would have been good prep for this just watch all the FA Cup final goals just watch all the finals FA Cup and the World Cup final goals FA Cup's fun too I'd do it Keith Pouchon
15:05right I mean we haven't really got anything here have we so at the risk of humiliation should we just go for Matarazzi 06 or do we go for your instinct to go Lloris 2018. The fact that you were there and your mind went straight to that final. Something happened. There was definitely a lot of, there was a couple of weird goals in that game. I know that. I can remember that. I just can't remember specifically who scored them or exactly what happened. But I remember there being a penalty. I'm sure it was a shit penalty. I boycotted the final out of anger after the semis. Should we go? Ali, what do you think?
15:39Matarazzi, I have no image of that. But when you said it, it didn't feel terrible to me. And I don't remember France's goal in that final. Okay, so maybe we go with that. We'll go Matarazzi 06.
15:49Nick Miller:Marco Matarazzi 2006 World Cup final. That's incorrect, I'm afraid. This is awful. I hate hearing Charlie tell me the answers.
16:00You made your bed, son.
16:04Nick Miller:Zinedine Zidane scored for France with a penalty in that game. The answer was from the 2018 World Cup final. Oh, no. It was Mario Mandzukic. I know it was something to do with him. Your instincts were right about Lloris gaffing. He did do that. In actual fact, it was Mandzukic who profited from that mistake to score at the correct end when Lloris basically got tackled by him for a consolation goal. Okay, fair play. We weren't far off. Okay, you remain on a single point as we head into question five. Final question of the first round for you. Question five. From the BBC's quite annoying 50 most shocking World Cup moments, which match is being described here by commentator Barry Davis and talking head former England cricketer Graham Swan?
17:00Nick Miller:Just look at the expressions on England faces and the reaction in the crowd. It was one of those who thought, we can't lose this team. Yeah, we love them, they're great, but we can't lose them, can we? we love them they're great unbelievably patronizing um so this might be well it's one way of looking at this question to start with graham swan talking head on a on a football video graham swan the peak of graham swan was the 2010 11 ashes there is it is insane to me that he would have been invited on on this sort of thing at any other point other than between let's say 2010 and 2012 if they're really desperate so could they have been and i can't tell you that this program was aired in 2010 yes right ahead in 2010 okay so it probably i mean they're going to release this in the run-up to 20 to 2010 aren't they swanny at the peak of his powers yeah okay so so um what's the the previous tournament 2006 is there anyone there that we that we love that we played against and we went behind to right i feel like that's the key here we haven't necessarily lost this game in fact we probably haven't but we've gone behind and it's shocking do you play again yeah please just look at the expressions on england faces and the reaction in the crowd it's one of those who thought this can't we can't lose this team yeah we love them they're great but We can't lose to them, can we?
18:34So Barry Davies is commentating. Yeah. Look at the expression on these England players' faces and the crowd. Could it be, we went behind to Tunisia in our opening game of 98? Do I describe Swanlove Tunisia? Went on holiday there once. He'd just be a talking head on the whole thing, wouldn't he? Yeah, yeah, of course. He's been booked for the whole thing. It's not just this game. He's reading lines. Why has he said, we can't lose to this loss? We love them. Oh, you know, we love the Tunisians. I mean, an incredible red herring if he said that about someone that... And it's not for absolutely no reason.
19:11Would World Cup's 50th shocking moments encompass qualifying with Sam Marino? Ooh. The World Cup's most shocking moments. It can't surely put qualifiers into that. I don't think so. Cancel the licence fee. I don't recall Barry Davies commentating on that game. Barry Davies sort of paraphrasing himself there as well. Going to the well again for the just look at their faces. Oh yeah, he did. Dave, I'm looking at you here, I'm afraid. Could Swanee be being polite to another home nation plus Republic of Ireland? Are there any examples where we've gone behind to one of that lot? Who did we, because I say what they could do is surely England not qualifying for 94 could be a shocking World Cup moment.
19:56What was the game that solidified us not? well it was basically I mean we could still have qualified technically if we played San Marino yeah so maybe it is San Marino then and that would be the thing that would be the shocking the shocking moment is that we didn't get in yeah which would make sense the quickest we've obviously gone behind that's a part of it we've gone behind here I'm not sure we touched the ball did we and then we won 7-1 we did touch the ball Stuart Pearce's dodgy back pass I can't think of anything in a World Cup like certainly modern era where we've obviously gone behind I think we go for that 2006 we didn't go behind in a we beat Paraguay Sweden England conceding a goal to Tunisia would not be in the 15th most shocking moments no no I agree I'm with you let's go San Marino England conceding a goal early to San Marino in qualifying and failing to qualify for the 94 World Cup wow oh no oh no that doesn't bode well I can tell you the team that Graham Swan was talking about we love but we don't want them can't have them beating us was Cameroon in 1990 when they went 2-1 up in the quarterfinal bit of patching words to the Cameroonians that was that's a bad because they were they were the team of everyone's favourite team at the tournament there you go so you have finished the first round with one point oh no please hit us with your first round well world cups are generally low scoring aren't they goals per game at world cups always less than club football so let you know this this means nothing particularly after with what we've got lined up for you lot so our first round for you is all based around england trivia specifically question one which player said this in an october 2012 interview when overlooked by then england manager roy hodgson i gave up on that i think i'll never be in it roy's come in and picking his players.
21:59When two friendlies came up and I wasn't included, it was ridiculous, to be honest. He hasn't given anyone opportunities. People like Nathan Dyer and Danny Graham from Swansea didn't even get a look-in, but that's life. Unless Ricky Lambert scores 25 goals or bags 10 in the next two months, I don't think he'll get close either. Wow, so this was a player overlooked by Hodgson in 2012 and then going off on a rant about other players? Yes. Interesting. So the player was overlooked himself at that time? Yes. my first instinct Charlie and Nick is Defoe would that work chronologically could
22:33Nick Miller:it doesn't sound something he would say well he's quite punchy and he does really rate himself yeah and he was in he was in the squad in 2010 wasn't he so it was I don't remember him playing under Hodgson at all I mean Andy Carroll went to the 2012 Euros it's possible by this point he'd been overlooked but I think that would be quite a lurch to go from being in the squad to then sort of sounding off about it. Yeah, and then saying that as well, because he had a reasonable Euros to still be in the picture, I would say. Yeah. So we can rule him out. It probably is a striker. If you're citing Ricky Lambert scoring goals, then he's probably going to be a striker.
23:09Nick Miller:I mean, it feels like someone at an unfashionable club anyway. Yeah. Because it's tricky. I mean, at that time, who... Where was Defoe at Tottenham in 2012? Yeah. I think that's not a bad shout. I can't think of anybody else who would talk like that. We're not going to know the answer, I don't think. Should we go with Jermaine Defoe then? Because I like the confidence angles. We'll go with Jermaine Defoe, please. Jermaine Defoe did not say that in October 2012. Those were the words of Norwich striker Grant Holt. Wow. Should have followed the Ricky Lundin logic there. Grant Holt has declared for another home nation written all over him but yeah there we go okay interesting in fairness Nathan Dier soon to become a couple of years later a Premier League winner yeah right question two who captained England in Stuart Pearce's sole game as manager in the 3-2 friendly defeat to the Netherlands in February 2012 wow god who captained England against the Netherlands at least it's not from the 1930s might as well be yeah So that was around all the Ferdinand Terry stuff, wasn't it?
24:24Nick Miller:We're sort of assuming it's going to be someone mental, given Pearce's eccentric selections. Yeah. Scotty Parker. I like that. That's good. Around the time of his baffling football writers award. Winning the football writers, you know, the season before. Yeah. Very, very Stuart Pearce captain material. Is there someone he knew from Man City or some kind of fairly jobbing player who he knew and trusted? Yeah, I don't think he would be captain. Gareth Barry seems really boring as an answer. Yeah, but it could be someone like him. It's going to be weirder. He wouldn't have been there with Barry, but yeah, it could be.
25:06Nick Miller:It could be him. It could be Parker.
25:11Scott, Scotty Parker. Wayne Bridge. I'm just not sure if Parker...
25:16Nick Miller:I feel like Parker would be cited with him, you know, former England captain Scott Parker. Yeah. Ashley Cole. It doesn't feel weird enough. It feels like it needs to be weirder. Matty Upson. Yeah, I mean. It's not going to be someone he picked in the GB Olympics squad, is it? Oh, I like that. It's around the time, isn't it? So they had the armband from the start. They did the coin toss and everything. Yep. They led the team out. They had the armband. Could have been like Gary Cahill or something, fresh from his move to Chelsea. I like it. That's good. Yeah, no, Gary Cahill. That feels right. Nods of agreement all round.
25:55Let's go with Gary Cahill. So you've answered Gary Cahill. The answer is former England captain Scott Parker. Sorry. Don't worry. Don't worry. I think our logic, we talked it through quite well, but we remain flawless. That feels like a point. yeah

26:15Nick Miller:got it great shout Adam sorry about that don't worry yeah credit Adam let's see how you go on question three similar theme but which of these players have never captained England Mark Gahey Kieran Trippier Jordan Pickford or Eric Dyer so this is counting from the start of the game not just took the armband did Dyer ever do it? I know he was heavily like tipped that he could be a future England captain that guy who wrote that book Captain Class said Dyer was the sort of standout candidate I don't know if he ever did it Dyer and who was the other one? Gahey, Dyer, Pickford and Trippier I feel like Trippier must have done it.
27:13Nick Miller:You'd have thought so, yeah. From the start of a game, like the declared captain from the start, it feels less likely for some reason that Trippier would do it. You can see why Pickford might get it one time. Gay, he just feels like it's the right answer, is one of the answers because why is he on the list? And then it comes down to the other two. My instinct is that Kieran Trippier has never captained England. He's never led them out. It just feels like England more likely to have chosen a central figure, maybe even a goalkeeper. Gehi, I'm convinced, is in the list because he must have done it.
27:54But even then, why can't we remember that happening?
27:57Nick Miller:I don't know whether it's just a false memory, but I do have a vague memory of Gehi doing it, which is going to look pretty silly in a couple of minutes when the answer is not Gehi.
28:11yeah I'm pretty happy Kieran Trippier but I haven't got a lot to back it up I have to say
28:15Nick Miller:on the Scott Parker logic yeah I know what will happen is we'll this time be like we can't over all this time and we'll get it wrong but let's go with that logic okay we're going with Kieran Trippier yeah that has happened yeah the answer is Eric Dyer get the rave on Jordan Pickford I guess we are past the era of goalkeepers being captains I just would have thought he's done so many Out of a kind of loyalty to him Go on Captain England He hasn't had his 100th cap yet We remain on zero points Can you get off the mark here By giving me the missing player In this sequence Nick Barnby John Terry Jermaine Jenis Gary Cahill Ashley Young Blank Daniel Sturridge Declan Rice Miles Lewis Skelly Right, these are players who scored the first goal under England managers This is based on the first player in the list, which is Barnaby, who scored the first goal under Sven And Lewis Skelly would have done it under Tuchel?
29:28Yeah, on his debut, I think Alright, so
29:30Nick Miller:It was his debut Can you just read the names out again? Because I think the answer might be Adam Alano which is the goal who scored the only goal under Allardyce Big Sam, yeah Nick Barnby, John Terry, Jermaine Jenis Gary Cahill, Ashley Young Blank, Daniel Sturridge Declan Rice, Myles Lewis Skelly You're saying Lallana, I'm thinking Wilshire No, Lallana Lallana was definitely, because Allardyce obviously only had one game and England won that I think 1-0 Slovakia away? Yeah, it was definitely Lallana who scored that goal yeah so if that's the sequence then the answer's Lallana just check so Barnaby was Sven so Terry was in that 4-0 McLaren game he got the ball rolling McLaren's first game was a 4-0 friendly win against Greece I think makes sense yeah 2006 2006 yeah did Terry so then who okay so who would Sturridge so Sturridge would have been Southgate then yeah possibly Southgate what 2016 16 Okay We happy with Adam Lallana Yeah Under Allardyce Adam Lallana please That is correct Ah thank god Good stuff Yeah so Nick Barnby was Sven John Terry was McLaren Jermaine Jenis was Capello Gary Cahill was Stuart Pearce Ashley Young Oh Gary Cahill was Pearce Ashley Young was Hodgson Yeah Adam Lallana scored for Sam Allardyce's England Away in a wonder win in Slovakia Daniel Sturridge was Southgate Declan Rice Lee Carsley and Moles Lewis-Gelley Thomas Tuchel Great question, great answer It's 1-1 Question 5 From 1966 to 2026, who is the oldest outfield player to be named in an England World Cup squad Oldest outfield player in an England World Cup squad between 1966 and 2026 Inclusive Correct Okay.
31:33Nick Miller:How old is Jordan Henderson? Would he be? He's 36 mid-tournament. He turns 36. Yeah, he turns 36 mid-tournament. Because he, you'd think, would be up there. Outfield players. Right, what we got? What we got? 66, no. 66 is fine. 70, no. There were some... 70, no. 82. I wondered about 70 because there was... like jack charlton was weirdly old jack charlton was in the 70s squad but i can't remember whether he played but um he was quite old so definitely in the 70s squad yeah yeah yeah okay um i'm trying to think how old he was in 66 i think i don't think he was older than henderson is now so 74 78 no 82 I don't think is an issue.
32:2886, Alvin Martin was in 86, but I don't think he was that old. No, he wasn't. 90, nobody was that old.
32:40Nick Miller:What about, sorry, I'm interrupting your process here by skipping on a few. Was Connor Cody in 2022 as that kind of mascot? Yeah, but he wasn't old. He wouldn't have been that old. He's early 30s. Yeah, 31 at most. Yeah, I don't think so. Still still very sprightly 98 98 we had no oldies 2002 can't see it I don't think we did 2006 no 2010 more likely what about was Bex did he go in 2010 he was basically yeah so he didn't go suited up he was there in a suit okay yeah wow okay okay well 2014 did Hodgson bring any weirdly like knackered oldies. I mean, Rookie Lambert was in that squad. So Jordan Henderson is eligible here, right?
33:34Just to be clear. If we think he's the right answer, we... Yeah, okay, okay. So based on him turning 36 or his age now? It will be the age at which they started the World Cup, I assume. Okay, so he's 35. He's 35 until he turns 36. Yeah.
33:54Nick Miller:On the basis of that, I can't really think of anything else I can't think of anybody who Can't think of anybody older than 35 To be honest, that went to an England World Cup Yeah Shall we just go with it? I'll give you a clue Charitably, you have got the right age Cut off point It's technically useful I wouldn't have given us that clue if it was Henderson Charlton Henderson Showing us true colours there, I think, isn't he?
34:26so was there anyone out
34:27Nick Miller:any other sort of were there any other hangovers from 66 that were just sort of kept on because you can't drop them because they'd won it in 66 even though they were pretty old by 70 I think Nobis Towers was never as old as he looked he was like 28 66 and didn't go to actually I don't know if he did go to 70 there's some fresh blood in the 70s squad but don't think any it was a fairly young squad in 66 so don't think anybody in terms of outfield players I don't know should we go for Jack Charlton 70 then based on the steer that we've been given this is kind of purely I can't remember, probably based on I was for various reasons looking at the 70 squad the other day he was in it and I was surprised but I can't remember how old he was I don't know if he was that much older than 31 in 66.
35:20Nick Miller:He was called up quite late, I think. How old was Bobby John? He didn't... I think he started his managerial career kind of not long after that. And Jack was older than Bobby? Yeah, I don't think he was six years older than Bobby. Bobby was like 25, 26 in 66. Right. Or was he? Hang on. Because he was in the 58 Munich Air disaster. Sorry to go weird, but this is where we are. And I'm going to say he was about 21 then. So he was born in 37, which would make him 28, 29, depending on where his birthday is. And then add on four years, add on a couple for Jack. It's Jack Charlton. Okay, we're going for Jack Charlton, 1970.
36:11That's our answer. Okay. There are four players who are named as 35-year-olds. And one is a 36 year old. The four players named as 35 year olds, Jordan Henderson, Steven Gerrard, Martin Keown, and Jack Charlton. Do you know what? I'm glad he's in there at least. The oldest, 36 years old in the 2002 World Cup squad, Teddy Sheringham. That's bad from us, man. That's terrible.
36:45Nick Miller:That is. It's just like, him in the 2002 World Cup, I just don't remember it. Are there any more famously old England players than Teddy Sheringham? No. He almost scored against Argentina, didn't he? He hit the ball with some kind of ludicrous volley. Yeah, I just don't. I think of his international career ending in 98. A weirdly ageless man. Kind of looks the same now as he did when he was in his 20s. Yeah. Okay. He was great on a golf course. The score after the first round is 1-1. What an attritional first round that was. And this episode is brought to you in association with NordVPN. For those who don't know, VPN stands a virtual private network.

I've scored against England at a World Cup, but was also involved in a controversial incident at the same tournament. I played club football on four different continents and won league titles on three of them. I scored over 400 goals and finally retired at the age of 43 after getting on the score sheet alongside my son for my 14th and final club.

38:33Oh, look at that! That is wonderful!
38:41Welcome back to the Football Clichés Quiz World Cup Edition. Clichés versus the England pod. The score is a mere 1-1 after the first round as we head into round two. England pod, you gave us England in round one. We're going to give you niche England in round two. So, doing it for the nation. The nation's hopes on your shoulders. Nick, hit them with question one of round two, please.
39:10Nick Miller:Right, this isn't a World Cup question. It doesn't have to be World Cup specific, does it? So this isn't a World Cup question, but name the three players who are pictured on the front page of the Sun under the headline, Disgraceful, after the England squad's pre-Euro 96 big night out in Hong Kong. Oh, this is good. So I think Teddy Sheringham is there, our mate Teddy. It's Gazza. It's Gazza. And Steve Howie. Amazing. That's my instinct. I remember Howie, Steve Howie, just inexplicably being front and centre in this whole affair. If you're thinking Howie, we've got to say Howie, who I feel like is the answer to most trivia questions of England in this era.
39:55I remember sharing him like wearing a vest and looking really skinny. With his walking stick and his other friend. And Howie, Howie, a Newcastle player at that time, Dave. So, you know, probably thick as thieves with Gaza. I think we'd go those three. Perfect. Done.
40:10Nick Miller:Okay, the three players were Paul Gascoigne, Teddy Sheringham. I think you're slightly generous in saying he's wearing a vest. I think his T-shirt was just ripped to shit.
40:23Nick Miller:And the third player was Steve McManaman. Oh, the wrong Steve! I celebrated. I celebrated too early. He actually did. You got five-six of that, right? We're not in the business of giving five-six of points out. Was McManaman wearing a cap? possibly a cap backwards I think I think if you just say how are we for every trivia question from 1996 you'll basically end up ahead so it's fair enough right score remains 1-1 question 2 in round 2 for you what do former Chelsea striker Hernan Crespo former Newcastle winger Hugo Viana and somehow not former West Ham forward Carlos Baca all have in common they I'm pretty sure they all scored penalties against us in shootouts Baka in in Russia Viana 06 06 who was the first one?
41:18Crespo hold on in 98 hold on did Baka or did they all miss? I'm pretty sure Viana scored but Baka Baka missed didn't he that was the that was the Pickford yeah because did Crespo miss? that would be more notable than they've just all they've just randomly picked those three out of all the potential scorers so I think Viana missed and Postiga scored which is kind of in my mind. Yeah, I think Backer had his saved by Pickford's. Yeah, Crash Band missing in 98. Because there was two misses for England, so there has to be a one miss for Argentina. I think it's got to be that. Why would they just randomly pick those three out of all of the players that have scored penalties against England?
42:02Yeah, miss and shootouts. You're going for all missed in shootouts against England. Correct. Well done. Prespo 98, Fiano 2006, Carlos Bacca 2018. Right, 2-1, the England pod leads. Charlie, question three, please.
42:20Nick Miller:Question three, which team have England beaten the most times at World Cups? That's a great question. Well, I know that the two nations we've played the most at World Cups, are Argentina and Germany, because I looked that up as a potential question, but decided not to use it. But I don't know if we've beaten them. The old enemies. Apart from the final, Nick 66. Might have been on the same page of England Football Online at 11.14pm last night. We all surge in traffic for that site. What a website, by the way. I think it's fair to say that Dave is on England Football Online at 11.14 pretty much every night.
43:00Incredible website. He sent us a message last night so he was about to have an absent cocktail so I'm not sure he was last night. Fucking hell. Right, who we've beaten the most. I've got Denmark in my head, but that's only from the 0-2 knockout game.
43:21Nick Miller:Sharing and watching on from the bench. So good we beat them three times. It feels like it's going to have to be given longevity, like a Germany or Argentina, where it's just on rotation in those early years. We've beaten Argentina twice. Do we beat Argentina in 66? And then... Was that a win? And then we went on to 2002. Then we lost to them. Drew against them, technically. Do penalties count as wins? Does Germany plus West Germany count? So Germany and West Germany can be combined, yes. I think we've only beaten them in the 66 final. I think you might be right. I know there was a whole thing that we used to always lose against them, but Sweden?
44:10I thought they were beating them much. We drew with them in 2002 and 2006. Beat them in 2018. But it's more, I mean, how many are we looking for? What's the winning score? We've beaten Tunisia twice, but then that would be the same as Argentina. Not with Tunisia, surely. But, you know, there's probably an Argentina or a Germany lurking in those early years, isn't there?
44:35Nick Miller:is there that's why you know how we played them the most what's the number do you remember from your yeah so five times each Argentina I think is probably the answer guys I'm leaning Argentina but when when else have we beaten them though we played them five times we beat them in 66 we beat them in we beat them in 2002 we lost to them obviously in 86 86 98 so we drew them in 98 yeah so the other one there's a lurker in fucking Switzerland in 1912 or whatever it was. Let's give us that one. Stop defiling the World Cup, please, Ali. We know it's two and there's a game that we don't know about and you've got to find me three wins from somewhere.
45:20All right, yep. Okay, go with Argentina.
45:24Nick Miller:Okay, so Argentina, final answer. There are four countries that England have beaten twice at World Cups. They are Tunisia, Paraguay, France and Czechoslovakia but standing alone with three victories against this nation is Argentina oh yes 2002, 1966 and you were bang on with your kind of mystery lurker 1962 great logic I remember it well 3-1 the England pod leads as we go into question 4 of round 2 what happened in England's 1-0 win over Czechoslovakia at the 1970 World Cup that has never happened again in any of their 51 World Cup games since, and only once at the Euros. Only once at the Euros?
46:10Could it keep a red? Or even like something red card related? Did they have red cards in 1970?
46:21Can't have introduced subs and red cards in the same tournament, but it would be absolute chaos.
46:28Okay, I'm going down a bit like the first question. It's just like, what sort of thing could this be, right? It's not a hat-trick being scored because we know Kane's got one. It's
46:43Nick Miller:not going to be a winner from a sub. Have we ever scored the winning goal scored by a sub? That's got to have happened loads of times, I'd have thought. You'd have thought so. Yeah. We don't score many winners. Yeah, but even so, like in group games and stuff like that has to that has to have happened yeah yeah you're probably right well I mean winner scored by a substitute never never since then in the World Cup and it's only happened once at the Euros yeah that can't maybe Ollie Watkins is the only substitute winner surely not well I mean no I don't I don't hate it there are more goals scored in the last half an hour games in the first hour by subs but can you think of a notable England winner by a sub?
47:32I'm trying hard.
47:37I've got that classic quizzes thing where now I've said that I refuse to think of anything else. I can't think of anything else. I don't even know if it, I don't even feel that strongly about it, but like I just can't. I just can't. I just can't. Horrendous use of the bench from our managers if, oh no. I want to go for it. I like it. It's again, it's more just like what sort of thing? Can you think of it like that, George? What sort of thing could this be? No, no, rather than doing that, we have a good memory of these games. Now let's actually think of, what about, there was the game Defoe off the bench against in the Euros, where he came on and we won 1-0.
48:17That was World Cup Slovenia, wasn't it? Slovenia. He started, I think he started. Did he start? I think he started. We've got a bit of a lead, let's go for it. What's your answer? Sub A winner came Sub came on And scored the winner The answer is England played in blue
48:41Fucking hell Well at least we wouldn't have got it It's happened just twice At the World Cup in fact When they lost famously Against the USA in 1950 And against When they beat the Czechs At the 70 World Cup And can you remember The Euros game That England played in blue Was it 2012 Yeah, I'm thinking Andy Carroll. Yeah, Andy Carroll's a towering header. By the way, Ali, you were right. Cards were introduced at the 1970 World Cup, so it was a double whammy. Very influential. Cards and subs. Bloody hell. Yeah. Imagine, like, at the moment, the new rules that we're all talking about involving keepers going down and getting injured and whatnot.
49:14Like, 1970 previews must have been, like, impossible to wrap your head around what on earth that was going to look like. The Athletic doing explainers, fucking right, et cetera.
49:24Nick Miller:1970 version of Dale Johnson, absolutely. blown mine. Right, the score remains 3-1. This is your final question of round two. Nick Miller. Okay, question five. In the video for the original Three Lions by Baddiel, Skinner and the Lightning Seeds, England players recreated the four iconic World Cup moments mentioned in the song. That's Aquabaymore, Wineneca scored Bobby belting the ball and, of course, Nobby dancing. Can you name the four players who recreated those moments? I watched this the other day. Peter Beardsley is one. Teddy Sheringham does Bobby belting the ball. Steve Stone does Nobby Styles.
50:05And what was the other one? Well, I mean, just sing the song, Dave.
50:07Nick Miller:The Tackleback Mall, Wendellica Squad, Bobby belting the ball and Nobby dancing. Do we just have to say the players? We don't have to say what they're actually doing. Yeah, the question, yeah. Just give me the players. If you want to identify the, match the player to the incident, then that's fine. Yeah, the players themselves is fine. Well, I know Beardsley was there, but whether or not he actually partook in the but there were only four players there weren't there oh tackle by Moore tackle by Moore so so the tackle by Moore I think would have been it's obviously going to be it's going to be a defender isn't it Adams it's pretty Howie again isn't it Tony Adams imagine if it's Steve Howie
50:50was Des Walker there? no Adams or Or Sol Campbell or Gary Neville. Just thinking of that. They definitely threw a few squad players to it. Like it wasn't... Southgate. Graham Lasseau. I feel like it would have been a centre-back. Southgate? Well... You sure it wasn't Dez? I can kind of see him in that like... No, but it was like current players. It was players of that vintage doing the old stuff. The defenders there were Adams, Campbell, Southgate, Neville. Stewart Pierce that would make sense I think it's Pierce so Stone who's Stone Pierce so Beardsley you think Beardsley scored the Lineker goal I'm pretty sure he was there he's in the video like he's I mean would Barnes have given that Barnes obviously was part of it no no it's not oh I might be doing Beardsley and World of Motion who was in the who was in the that is a worry what strikers were there in the I have Sheringham Shearer I think ignore Beardsley I think I don't think Shearer would have been up for it Les Ferdinand this is so annoying we've definitely like the other I'm confident that it's that it's Pierce no I know for a fact it's Steve Stone and Teddy Sheringham because I saw that the other day when we played the clip of three lions on cliches so we basically need like an attacking I mean yeah Ferdinand someone who's doing that little lineaker controlling it on his knee and kicking it across and it wouldn't have been it wouldn't have been Teddy I don't think Teddy's doing two Fowler?
52:23Fowler, I like Fowler yeah nice let's go for those four, can we do it again with World of Motion so, Teddy Sheringham, Steve Stone Stuart Pearce, Robbie Fowler
52:32Nick Miller:okay before giving you the answer the original version of this question that I wrote was going to be which of the England players appeared in the video for World of Motion and it was really good until like in the last five seconds of the video there was like a squad shot and I fucking ruined it, I was livid 36 years later at New yeah anyway sorry the answers are Stuart Pearce was that tackle by Moore Robbie Fowler was Lineker goal great shout Teddy Shearingham was Bobby Charlton and Steve Stone was Bobby Starr so you're correct love the logic of course with his left foot as well Robbie Fowler I was fucking around thinking about 1998 because I had World Cups on the brain that's why I was giving it Owen and then thankfully you nudge me back in the right direction.
53:22The England pod lead 4-1. Great round. England versus the Netherlands at Euro 96. Our round two, please, the England pod. Yes. Round two, World Cup trivia. Here we go. Question one. How many World Cup previews have you read up to this point? Please name the four debutant nations in the 2026 World Cup. Okay, it's Cape Verde, Curaçao, Uzbekistan and Jordan.
53:54Nick Miller:They're the four. You've read a lot of World Cup previews. You've probably written them, haven't you? I've fucking written a few of them. Curaçao, Jordan, Uzbekistan, Cape Verde. Correct answer. Thanks for that start. Appreciate that. Okay, question two. name the four players at the 2026 World Cup who were also at the 2006 World Cup. Oh wow. Right. Guillermo Ochoa. Hmm. The answer is always Rafael Marquez. He's always knocking around. Cristiano Ronaldo. Lionel Messi. Lionel Messi. Lionel Messi was. He didn't really play much but he was there. Yeah, he was. So we've got Ochoa, Ronaldo, Messi. No England players.
54:38Nick Miller:No, no England players. Can't even be asked to run through the countries. This is a disgrace, 48 teams. Were there any of the Dutch, was there any sort of young Dutch guy? No, Van Dijk's their elder state. Yeah, would Spain have had, I don't feel like they've got like a massive veteran. No, all their slugs have gone. This is going to be someone from like Saudi Arabia or Iran or something. Yeah, that's the problem. Is it someone, you know? Don't think Iran. Saudi are fairly fresh these days. I don't think they've got anyone hanging around. I don't even know if they were at the 2006 World Cup, to be honest.
55:10Nick Miller:Was Neuer in the Germany squad in 2006? Manuel Neuer. He would have been third choice because they had Lehman and Kahn, didn't they? Yeah. He might have been the third choice keeper. I don't think he was in the squad. Very sadly, was Robert Enker the third choice goalkeeper? Yeah, or the really, really highly rated, possibly Schalke goalkeeper, whose name I've completely forgotten. He had a really cool name. Oh, it begins with an H. Hildebrand I think Hildebrand yeah possibly I think Enker might be a good shout as well so I mean yeah Neuer was yeah no I don't think Neuer was in by 2010 I think France is there a Frenchman that's just kept I don't think so honestly there's such a turnover of players there's just so much to choose from they won't need a 40 year old and let's face it they're going to have to be 40 or 38 late 30s yeah yeah 38 to 42 to Brazil Brazil do they have one of those players who's like how is he still knocking around for them I mean obviously they had Thiago Silva but sorry can we run through the three we have got sorry Ronaldo Messi Ronaldo Messi and Ochoa yeah okay yeah Ochoa was the one that jumped out the other day as yeah he's made it oh bother right oh no Costa Rica They ooze someone from 06 Mexico potentially, but we've got that.
56:39I don't know. Sweden. Sweden, Turkey, Turkey, the old tech.
56:46Nick Miller:The old tech. Turkey went in in 2006. Okay, that's helpful. Oh yeah, maybe it's easy to go through the 06 countries. Oh, tell you what, Ecuador's Enna Valencia. Is he that old? He's not perhaps old enough. I mean, he joined West Ham in 2014, didn't he? Yeah, I don't think he was at 06. He would have been... I mean, it is possible that he joined West Ham when he was 26 or something, and now he's 38. Yeah, he's about 36, 37, 38 right now. I don't mind that. I mean, we've... Okay, we'll go for Enna Valencia as our fourth name. Ronaldo Messi Ochoa Valencia. You're going for Ronaldo, Messi, Ochoa and Ena Valencia.
57:36Ronaldo, Cristiano Ronaldo is, of course, at this World Cup and was at 2006, famously. Messi was at the 2006 World Cup and will play for Argentina at this World Cup. Thanks to one of their goalkeepers doing his Achilles, Guillermo Ochoa, has been called up to the Mexico squad for this World Cup. Ena Valencia is 36 years old, was not at the 2006 World Cup. The player that you missed is 40-year-old Luka Modric. Bollocks. I just don't think of him as old.
58:11Nick Miller:He was at the 2006 World Cup. Yeah, I don't know. Before he joined Spurs a couple of years later, didn't he? He just wasn't on my radar. I'm surprised he's the only one of those Croatians who was there. Croatia, though, is a good... If we said Croatia, do you think we would have got Modric in our deliberations? I think we would have started thinking, oh, is he? Because we knew he's 40 and I think that's enough. Okay, doesn't matter. The score's 4-2. Can we have our third question, please? What does this sequence represent? Mexico, Hungary, Morocco, Italy, Argentina, England, Italy, Argentina, Poland.
58:50Can we have that again, please? Absolutely, yeah. Mexico Hungary Morocco Italy Argentina England Italy Argentina Poland
59:01Nick Miller:So we just have to we don't have to the next one No you don't have to fill anything in it's just what is this Is this like is this like the Fair Play Award or something because England have won that at some point I can't remember which one which World Cup it is but You'll never sing that Yeah exactly Morocco wouldn't really assuming this list is chronological is this chronological? yes then Morocco wouldn't make sense in that sense Nick so the list is chronological yeah so working our way back then Poland 22 or 26 I'll give you a little bit of a clue because I think it is quite tough this sequence starts in 1990 and ends in 2022 I think I know it I do know it I think I'm pretty sure I know it, but this is just a theory.
59:52Nick Miller:So my theory, Adam, is about they played Argentina, saved a penalty against Messi in the groups, Poland. I'm pretty sure at the 22 World Cup. So I don't know if it's linked. And obviously Argentina went on to win it. So I don't know if it's linked to either Argentina winning it or to Messi. But go with what you have. I've enjoyed all of that. I'm going to fucking ignore it. Please. The 1990 World Cup final was refereed by Eduardo Codasal, who was Mexican. I believe Simon Marciniak did the 2022 World Cup final from Poland. So 1994 was Sandor Poul of Hungary. Wow. 1998, I don't know, but let's assume he was Moroccan.
1:00:352002 World Cup referee was Rossetti, let's say. 2006 Argentinian was that really sort of, you know, gruff looking. Wait, hold on. 2002 would have been Kalina, would it? Yeah. Oh, sorry. Yeah, yeah. Don't worry about it. Yeah, yeah, that's fine. 2010, not Graham Pohl, obviously. Who was good? It was Howard Webb. Oh, Clattenburg, Clattenburg. No, Howard Webb.
1:00:58Nick Miller:Howard Webb. Yeah, Webb in 2010, yeah. Famously didn't send off... De Jong. Nigel, no. Yeah, yeah, I don't know any of the others, but it's the nationalities of the World Cup final referees. Yeah, great shout. If only there are extra points for getting the referees, because that is incorrect. Thank God. Well done. Amazingly, you managed to get all of those and get Webb and Kalina wrong. They're probably the only two that anyone would get. You never not get me on 90s referees. Some little known Italian ref. Pure showboating from Adam there. Right. Question four. Put these teams in order from oldest to most recent of when they last qualified for a World Cup.
1:01:38Turkey. Czech Republic. Czech. Austria. Austria. Paraguay. Paraguay. and we're including 2026 presumably yes okay so Paraguay are at 2026 they're all they're all at this World Cup when did they last qualify okay
1:01:55Nick Miller:yeah right so Turkey was Turkey was 2002 2022 no 2000 2002 that was literally their last World Cup yeah they've qualified this is their this is only their third World Cup that Turkey have been at I'm going to trust a man who has been to interview Fatih Tarim at his house yeah Czechs so the Czechs the Czechs have been weirdly like yeah Yeah, they're Euros regulars, but then just take a break for the World Cup. I'm sure I was looking at this the other day, and it was like 2006 or something. I was going to say, I can't think of them beyond 2006. So let's pencil that in. I'm trying to think, I can't actually remember.
1:02:33Nick Miller:I think 06, but who did they play in 06? I can't really remember them. I can't remember, but Riziki scored a really good goal. Yes, he did against USA. They were in the Italy group, yeah. The Italy-Ghana USA group. Austria were at Italian 90. Oh, they were in 98 too. Tony Polster scored a Madden in post-goal. Were they at the last one? Don't think so. Don't think so. They've been in Euros. In trouble, in trouble. Yeah. Paraguay were definitely 0-6 because England beat them. Yeah. Paraguay must have been to a World Cup since then. It's pretty hard not to qualify from South America. Vague memories of Paraguay at 10.
1:03:14Nick Miller:Yes. They got to the quarters, didn't they? Or something mad? I don't think they got to the quarters, but weren't they in New Zealand, Italy? Yes. Yeah, I think they were. Yeah, I think they were. New Zealand famously didn't lose a game at that World Cup. So we need them from oldest to newest, right? So even with these penciled in dates, we've got Austria 1998, Turkey 2002, Czech Republic 2006, and Paraguay later on. So our chronological order, if we're happy, Nick and Charlie, is Turkey, sorry, Austria, Turkey, Czech Republic, Paraguay. Austria, Turkey, Czech Republic, Paraguay. I'm pretty happy with that.
1:03:57Yeah. That's our order. So. Don't say so. Austria were last in the World Cup in 1998. In 2002 was the last we saw of Turkey. and in 2006 there was Thomas Riziki and Czech Republic but not since then Paraguay who can forget them in 2010 not I yes you are correct well done lads it's four quarter finals against Spain in 2010 what's quarter finals there you go four all your final question of this round is this it's another sequence this time you have to finish the sequence Maxi Cambiasso Maxi Crespo Tevez blank
1:04:43Nick Miller:this is the goal that Argentina scored the passing sequence that Argentinian that goal that Argentina scored Cambiasso scored the goal 2006 yeah Maxi Rodriguez scored that insane volley against Mexico 2010 no that was also 2006 oh okay okay okay so the sequence is Maxi Cambiasso Maxi Crespo Tevez blank right so these are goals scored by Argentina at the 2006 World Cup I think it's safe to assume or it's that passing the passing sequence of that goal that amazing goal which was scored but I don't know whether is that going to be right because why would they stop at 6 oh hang on they beat someone 6-0 in that yeah Serbia beat them 6-0 in that game yeah that makes more sense they wouldn't do the passing move because Messi didn't Messi come on and get a 6 Messi did score didn't he do we like it?
1:05:41it is Messi isn't it?
1:05:42Nick Miller:so Messi came on off the bench and scored I'm pretty sure yeah I'm 45 % sure you're right you seem more certain but I do like it Nick go with Messi yeah I like the passing sequence thing but why would they only there was like 19 passes in that move so why did they only pick 6? it's Argentina's goal scorers against Serbia in 2006 so your answer is Messi Messi okay Messi sorry That is correct. Yes. That is, they are the goal scorers in order in Argentina's 6-0 win over Serbia and Montenegro at the 2006 World Cup. Guys, wow. Wow. At the end of round two, it is cliches 5, England pod 4. What a roller coaster.
1:06:26It's burst into life, it's fair to say, in round two, hasn't it? Listeners will be back very shortly with the third and final round.
1:06:44Oh, look at that! That is wonderful!
1:06:52Welcome back to the Football Clichés Quiz. It's Clichés 5, England pod 4. My World Cup fever has gone from about 20 % to 85 % in the space of just two quiz rounds. I love World Cup trivia. It is the purest form of football knowledge. Round three, we'll have something of a technicality about it. The structure is as follows. We're going to give you a question with multiple possible answers. Name two of them for one point. Name four of them for two points. And name six of them for three points. I believe that format is the same as yours, EnglandPod. We will alternate questions in the final round.
1:07:31The score is 5-4. Cliches will go first. Right. to reiterate you need to name two of these for a point name four of them for two points or name six of them for three points so once i've read the question out you will decide how many your points you're going to go for and if you don't get those points you don't get anything it's all or nothing in this round i want you to name the members of trinidad and tobago's 2006 world cup squad who played for English league clubs right I think Stern John is is our first one here could I clarify Adam did they play for English clubs at that time or at any time that's the club they were they were registered with at the time according to Wikipedia for example so that's the club they were listed as playing for surely not 2006 Kem and Jones oh that's a good one that's a very good one there was there was a lad who played for trinidad and tobago uh well a white guy who played for portvale mark bircham not mark bircham similar kind of player but i can't remember his name uh i think he was called birchall chris birchall i i think it was for yeah okay um i think the keeper give us that on the surname surely for some reason i think the keeper might might have been it was in england but clayton donaldson who was playing for crew maybe at the time or is he a strategy uh clayton ince clayton ince yeah clayton ince clayton yeah yeah okay dwight york still swart york in there he can't was he been registered to an english club i mean i think he'd have been in the squad sunderland yeah maybe in 06 i think we we should play safe here and just go for one point okay you're gonna name two players for a single jones and i think we can get two right yeah yeah do we need to know we don't need to name the clubs do we nope so So Clayton Ince.
1:09:24And Cameron Jones. Although he was definitely, I think he was in goal for the friendly that they played in like 2000 and whenever it was. Because remember when we had Dean Ashton on the pod and we talked about that game. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Insider information, that's annoying. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And he knew Clayton Ince from Crewe. Yeah, okay. I don't know if he was, but was he definitely in the squad in 2006 though? That's not 100%. Yeah, mate. I mean, York feels like a much more solid, because did he, you know, he'd knocked around for a bit, didn't he? It wasn't like he was good in the left. How old was York in 99?
1:09:55This is seven years after that. I'm pretty sure he was in there. I think he was there. I think he went. So let's go Dwight York, Clayton Ince. What about Kenwin? My concern is York is in like the A-League at this point. Yeah, I think Kenwin is more definitely safer than York. Clayton Ince and Kenwin Jones. You're going for Clayton Ince and Kenwin Jones. Is that your final pair of answers for one point? You nearly fell into the Dwight York trap, didn't you? He was in the squad, but he played for Sydney FC. Well done, Alan. Yeah. The white guy you were looking for was Chris Burchill. Oh, I've got his name.
1:10:38Okay. But your two answers are Clayton Ince, correct, and Kenwin Jones, correct. You got yourself a point. We take it. It's 5-5. Right. Our first question of round five, please. Yes. So we are looking for England assistant managers at World Cups.
1:10:57Nick Miller:So Tord Grip is obviously on. Okay, Tord Grip's good. McLaren. Steve Holland. Steve Holland. Who was Robson's assistant? Was it Don Howe? Yeah, don't mind it for now. Howe for now. Okay, don't know 66, don't know 70. Oh, Glenn Hoddles was Gorman, wasn't it? Dave Gorman. Yeah, it was. like this okay yeah let's let's think recent okay so 98 we're good oh two is grip oh six is McLaren yeah yeah yeah because you just took over right 10 10 was Capello and Capello's oh who was Capello's was it Franco Baldini yes Hodgson's Hodgson's assistant in 2014 Ray Lewington Ray Lington, thank you. And Southgate, Holland, 18 and 22, right?
1:11:49Yeah. But it doesn't matter, as long as we've got him once, that's the main thing. It wasn't...
1:11:54Nick Miller:What the fuck is the guy's name? It wasn't Dave Gorman. Dave Gorman's the comedian. It was... What's the... Holland's assistant, Gorman. Yeah, you've got him already, yeah. Yeah, yeah, you've got him. John Gorman. John Gorman. John Gorman, thank you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, so we've got Tord Grip. We've got Steve McLaren. We've got Steve Holland. We've got John Gorman. And we've got Lewington, so that's five. Do we push for six and go for either Baldini or Don Howe? It's huge. I'm not sure about Howe. I think he was kind of involved around that time, but I can't remember whether he was assistant coach.
1:12:28How confident about Baldini do we feel? Because this would get us an extra point. Or do we just go for the two?
1:12:34Nick Miller:You think? All right. Yeah, okay. So we'll go for the two. And our four men are Steve McLaren, Tordgrip, Steve Holland, and John Gorman. John Gorman, 1998, correct. Todd Grip in both 2002 and 2006. Correct. Steve Holland in both 2018 and 2022. Correct. Oh, shit. Steve McLaren was managing Middlesbrough. Ah! He was, but I thought he wasn't the assistant manager. Yeah. I frantically Googled and he wasn't there. That was the Dwight York trap for us, wasn't it? Fuck. Wow. Because he would have been on Ericsson's stuff and Todd Grip was just, ah. Yeah, he was involved, but he wasn't the assistant. Todd was Sven's trusty assistant till the end.
1:13:20Nick Miller:Can you stab us in the heart by telling us whether Don Howe was the assistant? Don Howe was Bobby Robson's assistant. You had Baldini. And Baldini was... Lewington. You could have had, if you've gone further back, you could have had Bill Nicholson for the 1958 World Cup or Billy Wright for the 1962 World Cup or Jimmy Trotter in 1950. Sure.
1:13:44sitting there with their trotters up right question two from cliches in round five Nick Miller okay easy
1:13:54Nick Miller:simple on this one names of the official World Cup balls since 1970 oh well oh no this is not up my street we can definitely get two right Jambulani and I think the 2018 ball was the... Do we have to name the years? We can just get the names right. Just the names. So there's Telstar. I think one of them was a Telstar. Possibly 2018 but that might have been a retro throwback but mate this for my sins this is something that I could not be less interested in the names of the balls. Wow. The Chubliwani is the only ball I think I know the name of in world football. What's the like classic Adidas panelled ball from the 70s and all that?
1:14:40What's that called? I should know it really. I was going to say Samba oh Tango yeah okay I could see there yeah there probably was a Tango in there at some point do we if we get see I don't think we can get four so I think again let's just play safe let's go Telstar Jabalani please yep that is correct
1:15:04Nick Miller:yes they are well done Dave two of the balls that's one plodding along we edge ahead astonishing Yeah, Telstar, Tango. You could have had the Atruska Unico from 1990. You could have had the Questra from 1994. Trick-A-Law from 1998. The Fever Nova from 2002. The Team Geist, 2006. Jabalani, Brazooka, 2014. And Al-Richla, 2022. Some of these are unhinged. Brazooka. Yeah, the Trionda from 2026. Anyway, you've got a slender lead of 6-5. Question two for us, please. Yeah, this is set up very nicely. what I'd like you to do is try and cast your mind back to Belo Horizonte 2014 England against Costa Rica it's the England starting 11 there are 11 players that started how many would you like to put forward?
1:16:00Nick Miller:my one player that sticks out here is Luke Shaw same, same really? I mean good that we've confirmed one but so we might have another. We want to get to base camp here. That's all. I think Gerrard fronted up and played in the final game. But this is starting line-up. Starting 11. Yeah, I do think he fronted up and played in the last game but I'm not 100 % sure. Bollocks. Did Ricky Lambert... Yeah, I'm thinking that. Did he start the game? Yeah, did he though? Who would have been in goal? Yeah, okay. Fraser Forster. Yeah, okay. Don't know. Do you think it was? No, no, no, no, no, no. Who was the 2014 England World Cup?
1:16:40So who was in goal?
1:16:42Nick Miller:Joe Hart was the first choice. Oh. It's very traditional to get your second choice keeper in for a dead rubber as well. You would think so. It wouldn't have been remotely controversial. I remember having a great nap during this game. And I were there. In the afternoon. And I had a good nap too. Very sunny. That's all I remember. That was so hot. Luke Shaw's locked in. Someone like Lallana? was he in the squad you'd play him against Costa Rica in the fucking dead rubble when you had him in Lallana so would the spare centre-backs have been like Jagielka I was just thinking Jagielka I feel like he might well have this feels sort of made for him you know like good solid pro made for Phil to come on the squad don't mind Jagielka Welbeck was he in the squad he would have been I'm pretty sure about the right era yeah that was the summer he left United maybe Ricky Lambert wouldn't have started as such okay so we go for Luke Shaw for one and then I think it's between Jagielka and Lallana for our second one to try and get the point should we go for Jagielka yeah yeah the other option you know is Jack Wilshere ooh was he in the score pretty sure he was Sterling but obviously there's always that risk he picked up a late injury I mean Jagielka feels like a safer yeah okay okay let's do it alright okay for a single point we're going to go for Luke Shaw and Phil Jagielka against Costa Rica right gents look it's incorrect okay okay England's centre-backs for that game were Gary Cahill Cahill was and Chris Smalling at right back Phil Jones left back was indeed Luke Shaw you shared the same core memory Ben Foster was in goal yeah rather than Fraser Forster In midfield we had Frank Lampard fronting up No sign of Gerrard And a very fit and healthy Jack Wilshere Jack Wilshere, bollocks You would absolutely start Adam Lallana In the third group game, Dead Rubber Because he's such a worthy member of the camp And you'd also do the same for James Milner You'd give Ross Barkley a start Just to see how he looks on that stage In the heat, turns out, not great And up top, Daniel Sturridge with a fair wind we could have got six points there sorry three points for six but there's the previous question as well we left so many points on the table lucky that's okay the England pod lead 6-5 still as we go into question three from cliches Charlie Eccleshare hit them okay a country once went to a world cup with the top scorers in that season's English, Italian and French top flights all in their squad can you name the three players and the clubs they played for.
1:19:32Nick Miller:So six things to name, how many do you think you'll get? Sorry, can you say that again? A country once went to a World Cup with the top goal scorers in that season's English, Italian and French top flights, all in their squad. Can you name the three players and the clubs they played for? So those are the six things you need to get. That is a phenomenal question. That's very hard. Because unless we get the country, we can't get one. Yeah, well, yeah. It feels like it's a six or, well, it's a three-pointer or a zero-pointer. Okay, let me just commit a little bit of thought here. I don't want to be too alpha about this, but Adam asked me this question last night and I nailed it.
1:20:15Nick Miller:I did pretty well on it as well. So did Jack Pitbrook. I bet. So England, so look, we've got to think of England, the Premier League top goal scorer is, the one that came to mind, but I'm pretty sure it was before the Euros, was when Lukaku and Mertens were in the same Belgium squad, when Mertens scored a million goals in Italy. But it just feels too niche. It feels a bit niche. 2010, the top scorer was Drogba. And is it out of the question that an Ivorian was Ligue 1 top scorer? I'm saying no, but I can't think who. And Italy, 2014, was that Suarez top scorer? 13-14 Liverpool. pool so Suarez um would there have been two more Uruguayans Cavani and Lovetsy oh what are you thinking Cavani at PSG Lovetsy and Napoli I don't hate that okay let's let's let's leave that and go 2022 I don't remember the Premier League top scorer 21 22 thinking back to kind of Trezeguet Henry France era well yeah I mean that's the logic there is incredible really because it could be it could be Henry or Anelka frankly in England he won a golden boot Anelka did it could be Trezeguet in Italy and Ligue 1 it would probably be a French player but we could probably go quite safe go Trezeguet Trezeguet in France for a point do you think 2002 2002 or 2006 or it could be Henry and Arsenal it could be Trezeguet and Juve because that's just before they got I know it's well before they got done by match fixing and then we wouldn't bother guessing the Ligue 1 we'd just go yeah yeah we'd just go just get the four points two points sorry Dave what do you think George and I are leading you to water will you drink we're going to go Henri France 2002 isn't it the player in the club well yeah player in the club so we don't even have to say the tournament so it's just Henry, Arsenal Trezeguet, Juventus Did Henry win the golden boot in 0-1-0-2?
1:22:29I'd have thought so And did I mean what about 0-6? Was he We don't have to say that Yeah okay I'll be gutted if it was Uruguay but Henry sounds more safe Well the fact that Charlie got it Lovetsy didn't it wasn't top goals Jack got it They're not all getting Uruguay surely Yeah yeah Well they sort of think that they would get but yeah but it's super If Arsenal are involved. Okay. Let's go. Henri, Arsenal, Trezeguet, Juventus.
1:22:57Nick Miller:That is correct. Well done. France, 2002. And the third one, the French top scorer is Jibril Cisse at Osset. Osset. Delighted we didn't try and guess that. You got yourself two points. I was kind of invisibly punching the air when you were identifying the Argentinian Lovetsy. Yeah, yeah.
1:23:22Very good. It was good logic up until then. 8-5, the England pod lead. Can we have our third question of the final round, please? Huge, huge question. This is, quite simply, World Cup hat-tricks between 1998 and 2018. So, 1998 to 2018, inclusive? Inclusive, yes. And how many hat-trick scorers can we name? Right, let's see what we've got.
1:23:49Nick Miller:So, Batistuta in 98. Got one. Yep. No Brazilians that I can remember. Did Kane score one 2018? Kane got one against Panama. Yep. So there's your one point. Right, let's have a couple more. Oh, no, Mbappe's too fucking late. That's annoying. Oh, yeah, yeah. Is that what you were going to say? Yeah.
1:24:19Patrick's messy. Messi never do it. Ronaldo I don't think has got one.
1:24:24Nick Miller:Oh, Cristiano, didn't he get one against Spain in 2018? Ronaldo got one in Spain's first game against Portugal. Sorry, Portugal's first game against Spain in 2018. One was a free kick, I'm pretty sure. Okay, closer against Saudi. Saudi Arabia in 02. So that's four we've got for the two points. I'm struggling now. Big nations, big nations, big characters. Forlan didn't get one in 2010, did he? No, I don't think he did. Don't think so. He approached this, really. Remember Spain won all their games 1-0 in that year? Yeah, Villa got one double, but then they were all 1-0, I think. Were there any others in 98?
1:25:07Nick Miller:Suca didn't get a hat-trick. Suca? No, I don't think so. Ronaldo didn't. 2002, I think Brazil thrashed China, maybe? They did, but I don't think there was a hat-trick. Yeah, Ronaldo didn't get a hat-trick then. Rivaldo didn't. So that's no good. Should we go for the four names then for two points? Just keep us in touch. Yeah, I think so. Okay, so for two points, we're going to go for Gabriel Batistuta, Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Miroslav Kloosa. Gabriel Batistuta got a hat-trick in France, 98, in a 5-0 win over Jamaica for Argentina. Miroslav Kloosa hat-trick against Saudi Arabia for Germany in 2002 in an 8-0 win.
1:25:50Harry Kane, hat-trick against Panama. Fortunate hat-trick. The third goal going in off his heel after Loftus-Cheek's long-range effort. Correct. And Cristiano Ronaldo, yes, scored a hat-trick against Spain, the last goal being a late free kick. So that is correct. The other answers you could have had were Paoleta in 2002, got a hat-trick for Portugal against Poland. Gonzalo Higuain got a hat-trick against South Korea in 2010. Thomas Muller, hat-trick against Portugal for Germany in 2014. And Jordan Shaqiri got a hat-trick for Switzerland in a 3-0 win over Honduras in 2014 as well. And there wasn't a hat-trick in the 7-1 either.
1:26:30So we didn't... OK, I'm all right with that. And breathe, I think, after that one. It's Cliché 7, England pod 8. What a quiz! What a quiz! Right, question four for the England pod. Once again, a reminder of the format, you can name two for one point, four for two points or six for three points. How many of the top 10 oldest World Cup players ever can you name? So Roger Miller is obviously going to be one. Yeah. And there's how many do we need? Six. I think at least three are keepers. In fact, I know at least three are keepers. And I must admit, Jonathan Wilson wrote a piece about Cristiano Ronaldo this week, which I read.
1:27:17And it was about the oldest players ever to play at the World Cup. So how much was I concentrating when I read that? I have a feeling that there was a couple of keepers, right, that basically got an appearance almost as a thank you for your service. I've got a feeling that Mondragon was one of them, but I can't remember what his first name is. Mondragon does that ring a bell lads I think a very old keeper for Columbia Shilton was quite old in 90 wasn't he I was going to say Shilton yeah yeah I'm pretty sure he's in I just remember that it was like it was basically four keepers and then Cristiano if he plays obviously he's not part of this Roger Miller for sure very few outfielders Rafa Marquez how far are you going to push the envelope on this one lads I feel like we've got a solid one pointer if we wanted to just to keep our distance.
1:28:10I think that's a good strategy. Just keep getting that one point. I worry about their haul coming up. Yeah, I think they're going to do well in the next question. So, you know, but it'd be better to guess, you know, one in the bush is worth two in the hand, lads. Never forget that. Should we get one in the bush, Dave? That's not how it is. It's the wrong way around, isn't it? But in the hand, it's worth two in the bush. Don't worry about that. I'm sitting into bushes going, ah, I'm sorted. Give me a hand Come on They're all in the bush mate Just take things So who's our Nailed on to Roger Miller Schiltz I mean
1:28:52Nick Miller:Would Banks Have been another one Who No I think I'd have Remembered if If he was in That piece that I read Fucking ridiculous I literally read about this And I can't remember So you're going For the single point Yeah And your two names are Oh Hold on Hold on Hold on what about Pepe did he play at the last World Cup no no Pepe's not really he's not one of these okay he's not one of these I'm much more valued telling you who it isn't than who it is if that makes sense Johan von Lantan and no help at all with famous English idioms okay unless you can pull out two old goalkeepers was Lehman one of the ones who was given a late just a little goodbye I'll just go for Shilton and Miller then okay those are our two answers Roger Miller and Peter Shilton.
1:29:39Roger Miller is number three. Peter Shilton, number five in the top ten. So you've got your point. It's nine, seven, two. The England pod. Just a quick one. Was Mondragon there? Oh, yeah. Farid Mondragon, number two. Wow. Mondragon. Right. Dragon in the bush and all that. Looking for managers At the 2026 World Cup Who have managed In the Premier League Roberto Martinez It's an absolute It's an absolute gimme I'm upset about this
1:30:18Nick Miller:Tuchel Tuchel, yes Steve Clarke Steve Clarke Who's the Portuguese chap? Oh, well The Portuguese manager Is Martiniz But Kiroz, sorry Kiroz Is he at the World Cup? Has he? He never managed He is, but he's managed In the Premier League I don't think Has he not? Did he not manage Many nights? assistant no he's phoenix assistant isn't he fair enough um uh curacao dude uh dick advocate yeah who's the dutch manager is it still komen it's still coming yeah so that's one is it yeah yeah wow who's managing turkey nick come on let's smash this come on montella so no so no uh ancelotti carlo ancelotti oh hello hello yes okay so i think that's yeah that's six don't stop don't stop well no because isn't that the maximum we can get yeah i know but get more names then make sure we haven't fucked anything up Steve Clark Steve Clark managed by Spromm didn't he yes yeah yeah definitely they did quite well actually didn't they Tuchel we know Martinez we know Advocat Sunderland Coman Everton and Southampton Ancelotti you happy with those then Everton yeah okay we'd go for Roberto Martinez Thomas Tuchel Steve Clark Dick Advocat Ronald Koeman and Carlo Ancelotti is Koeman definitely the Dutch manager yeah okay like this is our relationship hinging on that Wow, okay Locked in Sack the quiz master They're all correct There's so many in there as well You've got Graham Potter Yulian Lopetegui Marcelo Bielsa Jesse March Marizu Pochettino Somebody needs the right piece of this man Could have gone through the lot I think if you had the time It's 10-9 to cliches As we go to the final question Here we go Okay, question five how many of the top 10 youngest World Cup players ever can you name?
1:32:07Okay, so Walcott didn't play. He didn't play, yeah. So he can't count. Let's rule that out. And Rudy's kind of birth was in the Euros, wasn't it? So we know that Modric played when he was pretty young. Did he play? He definitely played in 2006, yeah. He was part of that answer. Well, Modric is older than Messi. How young do you think we need here? We're looking like 16, 17, yeah. 17? I think Pele was was Pele 17 when he got the hat-trick in 58 did Freddie Adu play at any World Cups no shit this is tough this is tough this is much harder than the question we've just asked which will make the win even sweeter
1:32:53I mean how old I mean how old was 18 wasn't he in 1998 so it's too old top 10 we're looking for the top 10 here oh god I mean the thing is we need the two points to give ourselves even a fucking chance of winning yeah I mean I think Messi should be should be one because he'd have been he's 39 now although that means he'd have been 19 they weren't even that young and Modric wasn't even that young no so Owen was younger than any of them which is a bit of a blow have we had any more I mean just just so we don't miss someone obvious for England have we had any more like proper hype jobs Fabregas 2006 2006
1:33:34yeah who are proper kind of little wonder kids who've oh five or six I mean like Pedri would have been a teenager in Qatar Yamal wasn't there was he in 2022 no did um did Germany take Odonko when he was really young what a shout that is that does ring a bell to me Mondragon I think it might have been the same World Cup that Walcott went to I think they took a flyer as well in David O'Donkle. He's got to go on the long list, lads. So definitely Pele. So we're saying Pele. Pele. Yeah. Did Maradona go as a kid? He could have gone in 78, but they didn't pick him. Ronaldo was picked in 94, but didn't get on the pitch.
1:34:21We're sure Neymar didn't go like 2010. Doesn't ring a bell. I mean, Owen was 18, I'm pretty sure, wasn't he? Got to be top 10, surely. It's not only more than 10, 18-year-olds, is it? I think so. So, Owen Pele, David O'Donkor. Wait, hold on. What about Bellingham? How old was he? 20, 22? Ooh. Certainly, yeah, yeah, yeah. He's 22 now, yeah. So he's 18. So he'd have been 18 when he played. Bellingham, Pele, Owen O'Donkor. Are you David O'Donkor? I'm confident that he went to a World Cup. It would be great if we get it. I think the whole point was he was really young and really quick. Okay, do those four.
1:35:00Just see what happens.
1:35:01Nick Miller:So Pele, your answer, Pele, Bellingham, Owen and Odonkor. Yes. Yeah. Okay. So Pele is correct. Number five. The other three are not in the top ten, I'm afraid. Sorry. You could have had Norman Whiteside, Samuel Eto 'o, Femi Opabuni, Solomon Alembe. Of course. Bartholomew Obeche, Rigobertsong, Yusufa Mokoku, Carvalho Leche or Garan Kual. That is tough. Good grief. That is tough. Hard round. Yeah, yeah. Donko was 22 years old. Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti. It looks crueler as the more I look at it. I'm really sorry. But when you do the oldest, you've got to do the youngest as well. So we've lost the quiz.
1:35:45That's a blow. I'm afraid so.
1:35:48Nick Miller:So we can play Luke Shaw and Phil Jagielka for the last question. Come in, Agent Walker. I've won it for cliches. Can we have our final question, please? Yeah, sure. we want players who were named in World Cup squads for England but did not play very specifically outfield players no goalkeepers allowed here so outfield players who travelled but did not play from 1998 onwards Martin Keown did it twice twice yeah Rio Ferdinand 98 yes Walcott 06 Walcott yeah didn't play did he Connor Cody in 2022 Yeah, absolutely did not play. He didn't play. Yeah. Okay. Do we want two more? I think go with them.
1:36:33Okay. We'll go for four players for two points. Rio Ferdinand, Martin Keown, Theo Walcott and Connor Cody, please. Yeah, so Connor Cody is correct. And he was, one of you aged him terribly earlier, by the way. He's only 33 now, so he was only 29 at World Cup. Wow. Sorry, Connor. And mature beyond his years. look guys they're all right you've got two points Rhea Ferdinand 98 Martin Keown 2002 Theo Walcott 2006 Connor Cody 2022 tons of others you could have got Connor Gallagher James Madison Ben White 2014 The Ox 2010 Michael Carrick Michael Dawson Stephen Warnock 2006 Wayne Bridge Jermaine Jenis and Theo Walcott 2002 Wes Brown Martin Keown and Gareth Southgate and 98 Les Ferdinand Rio Ferdinand and of course Martin Keogh well well well 12-9 which doesn't do justice to the rollercoaster that we've just been on I am fully pumped heartbreak again for England I am so ready to open my World Sucker World Cup guide now I'm going to get past the first page tremendous stuff from the England pod good luck with the World Cup have a great World Cup it's going to be a punishing schedule but if I know three men who can punch through the World Cup schedule it is Ali Maxwell George Ellick and David Walker.
