2:48Charlie Eccleshare:Football Clichés Quiz 26.
2:58Charlie Eccleshare:Hello everyone and welcome to Football Clichés. I'm Adam Hurry and this is the 26th edition of the Clichés Quiz. On Team Clichés with me today, first of all, Charlie Eccleshare. How are you doing? Very well, thank you. We have bounced back from back-to-back defeats against libero and career we go we're now undefeated in three and our record is one seven lost seven in the team versus team era we're back on par this is our chance to go one ahead or it could be another draw we had one of those didn't we yeah well we sort of agreed that the sweeper yeah that was a sweep one wasn't it yeah yeah um three undefeated though that's that's good solid would i take a draw today not sure alongside you is david walker how are things things are good i I'd definitely take a draw today, I think.
3:42Oh, I would as well, yeah.
3:44Charlie Eccleshare:Oh, God. Well, yes, because today's opponents are to be feared for a reason, representing the Football Clichés listenership. And they're not just any old listeners. These are elite operators, regularly found right at the very top of the happy hunting grounds leaderboard. Ah, first of all, ex-Opto ace, Pat Noon. Welcome to the Football Clichés Quiz, Pat. How are you doing? I'm doing good. Thanks for having me on. You excited for this? I'm really looking forward to it, yeah. I typed the words into our WhatsApp group yesterday, Pat Noon is inevitable. Yeah, what a fearsome opponent you are. Just on your own, but alongside you is BBC Radio Merchant, a man who had a key involvement in one of, if not the greatest Football Clichés pod moment, which we can't actually reveal the details of because he might get sacked.
4:29Charlie Eccleshare:It's Sam Huxley. Welcome to the Football Clichés quiz. Thank you. I think that's made it even more vague and even more chance of me getting fired for saying that. Thank you. Okay, well, that's the risk you take. We'll take you on, it's fine. You can do something for us. Excellent, excellent. Completing the trio of football cliches, listeners. It's Twitter funny man. I can't call him ex-funny man because that sounded like he's not funny anymore. And I had to check my pod spreadsheet several times because this really is the how did Eunice Cabal never play for QPR of football podcast appearances.
4:58Charlie Eccleshare:It's Johnny Sharples. Welcome. Thank you very much. Thank you for having me. It's funny you mentioned Pat's happy hunting grounds thing because he's very much a stays behind after training to practice his free kicks, man, because I went to bed the other night and Pat was sending me a screenshot of him playing Happy Hunting Grounds. And then I woke up the next morning and had just received a different screenshot of Pat playing Happy Hunting Grounds. So he's very much a David Beckham training man. We're in injunction territory now with Pat Noon, I fear. I don't know if I want him to win or lose now.
5:30Charlie Eccleshare:Anyway, today we launch our brand new quiz game at games.footballcliches.com. It's called Out of Control. It's devised, coded and delivered by our man, the great Colin, who has divided every single episode of Premier League years into one second GIFs. And your challenge is to name the season. There'll be five GIFs every day, three points for the correct season, one point for a narrow miss either side. And once a week, there'll be a 38 round marathon to complete. And you have to aim for the biggest points total you can as a benchmark for this. I'm averaging about 1.92 for each question. Charlie's hovering around 2.34, which is insane, Charlie, but also to be expected from you.
6:11I mean, I honestly think this game is absolute genius from Colin. It is so fun. It's so satisfying because there are all these little morsels of clues. I mean, like some might be quite obvious, but others it's like, what era is that jacket that that fan is wearing? You know, that someone's holding a camera. When's that camera? Is that late 90s? Like, it's amazing. And some of the celebs that pop up on the news section, it's honestly incredible. I think that's the best bit about it for me, is just the randomness of the GIFs that pop up. If you get one of the little monthly news updates, Gaddafi being pulled out of the hole or something.
6:47Charlie Eccleshare:Oh, God. Yeah, there are some problematic GIFs. Colin has a little queue to check them. It's fine. Yeah, go to games.footballcliches.com and play Out of Control today. Right, let's get cracking. A reminder of the format for everybody. Each team are going to pose three rounds of five questions to the other team and a total of 25 points will be on offer. Football cliches will kick things off with the trivia round. Clichés listeners, your first question is this. Since 1992, seven men have played for both West Ham United and Inter Milan. Can you name three of them? So Paul Ince comes to mind instantly.
7:25What year was the start year? 1992 Oh no yeah He'd already been at United by then So is it Victor Abina Is that the Nigerian guy He played for West Ham And I'm pretty sure he played for Inter as well Yeah All I can think of is Gary Breen Which is really unhelpful He didn't famously play for Inter He was just Please get him anyway Robbie Keane Robbie Keane Robbie Keane Robbie Keane So we've got Keane And Jaumario Did he play for Inter Yes 100 % If Abina definitely did then yeah let's i'm pretty sure he was at inter because they had quite a few italians about 10 15 years ago didn't they they're like boriello but i don't think he played he think he's ac wasn't he and not you know so it was uve and fessuale di michaeli skamaka more recently was he in an interman i don't think so i think the first three we said a pretty good yeah robert keen Jao Mario and I think it's Victor Abina but Abina okay you're going for Victor Abina
8:28Charlie Eccleshare:Robbie Keane and Jao Mario all correct um you could have also had Mark Arnautovic Luis Jimenez Victor Moses and Mauro Zorate but yeah three out of three for you that's all you needed you're on the board off the mark early good start Charlie hit them with question two please Okay, question two. Which player with the name Chris has played the most Premier League games? Okay, Chris Smalling. How many games would he have played? He was at United for about eight years, playing most games. Yeah, like Sutton went to Celtic, so that rules him out of a big chunk. Yeah, he would still have had about... He would have had eight years, and then another season after that, so probably nine.
9:11It's Christopher Samba But maybe not long enough We will accept a Christopher by the way
9:18Charlie Eccleshare:Chris Kirkland He was never really Apart from Wigan Chris Marsden Is it Southampton for it It would have been mostly lower league I don't really remember him at Southampton I don't think he was there that long Sutton also It's only 8 games difference 12 games difference but he played in the 42 game Premier League seasons as well. Wow, look at the logic. This is scary. Sam, I'm worried that you were going to say, I don't know if it makes a difference, but he did have that spell at Aston Villa. Yeah, that's what I thought was coming. He did. One goal. It's between Sutton or Smalling. I feel like there's a really obvious name that's going to be there, but I can't think of it.
10:02Any more recent? Chris Richards won't have played enough yet for Palace. Sutton was a regular, never, I don't think he really got injured for those like eight years until he moved to Celtic. So that's a good like 300 games. Yeah. And even at Chelsea when he was crappy, he was still playing most weeks, wasn't he? For that one season. And then he came back to Birmingham and went to Villa. So that was probably another 30 games. Yeah. And Smalling was in and out of the United and he went to Roma in a what? 2019. Covid, around Covid, somewhere like that. That's pushy now. If it was Sutton and I said something else, I'd be a bit gutted.
10:38so I'd rather get Sutton I'm happy with Sutton, I can't think of anyone else but Johnny what do you think? they both played for your teams, I'm happy to leave that one to you yeah, Chris Sutton I'm afraid this would be another stick which Ian Dennis could beat him it's not Chris Sutton the answer with 363 appearances is Chris Perry oh ok
11:02Charlie Eccleshare:nowhere near it Chris Sutton a mere 255 appearances in the Premier League. Wow. One out of two so far. Dave, question three, please. Question three. Stefan De Vrij, marvellous Nakamba and Tom Delibashiru all signed for clubs in which country's top flight this summer? I don't think I've even heard of the last player there. Nakamba was a villa, wasn't he? He was. Briefly. Tom Delibashiru joined this club in this country from Watford. That's the hook. I'm thinking somewhere like Azerbaijan or someone like that. Yeah. I don't know why. But I don't think it would be, it's obviously not Saudi, I don't think.
11:43Or Turkey. Or Turkey. Kazakhstan, Nani, Moses and Ojo, Shea Ojo are all over there. But I don't think their names have cropped up with these lot. I don't think the Indian Super League are giving themselves another go. No. Or China. Andros Townsend is in Thailand. So it could be Thailand if they've got some. What a time he's having over there, by the way. Oh, so you're still playing. I thought it was all social media now. Big time. Still at a club. Eating his raw steak and eggs every day. Staring into the sun. I mean, it's going to be a guess whatever we go for, isn't it? I mean, yeah, I don't mind Kazakhstan for the, just because we know there's a couple of other notable ones out there.
12:25Yeah. Unless Nani signed there this summer, which would surely, he would surely be in the question if that were the case. Maybe. Yeah. Good logic. Try and get in their heads. I don't know. Azerbaijan, should we go? Yeah, Azerbaijan. You're going Azerbaijan. I'm afraid that is incorrect. The answer is Greece. Okay, close to home.
12:45Charlie Eccleshare:Wow, one from three. Plenty of time left. Question four, listeners. What do these pairs represent? Albania and Burnley, Belarus and Reading, Russia and QPR, Chile and West Brom. What do these pairs represent? First thing that comes to mind is England B Internationals. Oh, okay. Because when Rob Green did his cruise ship, that was at Reading. and I'm pretty sure that was an England B game. I think England against Albania was at Turf Moor and that's where Stephen Taylor played for England B, I think. Okay, so do you think the Reading one was against Belarus or do you not remember? The Reading one was against Belarus, yeah.
13:25Okay, so if you've got two of the four that we pair in that, it feels like we're on the right line. Yeah, and Chile might have been when, that might be when Chris Sutton turned down a call-up in 98. And it's really Chile, yeah. Russia the Leticia hat-trick game. Yeah. Was that at Loftus Road? That wasn't Loftus Road, yeah. Okay, well, these... Sounds promising. I'm excited. So we think the pairs are England B opponents and the grounds at which they were played.
13:53Charlie Eccleshare:The logic is impeccable. The answer is impeccable. It's England B's last four fixtures and the opponents and venues. I thought Russia versus QPR was the real standout there, but yes, the Rob Green incident. He actually did his groin. I'm not going to take any points off for that. But yeah, it was the only time I've ever laughed at an England situation when they've been defeated. Rob Green tearing his groin while taking a goal kick at the Medeski against Belarus A. They weren't even allowed to be called Belarus. The whole thing was a shambles. But you've got yourself a point. Congratulations. That's superb work from all of you.
14:26Charlie Eccleshare:Right. Two points on the board for the listeners. Question five, please, Charlie. Question five. A few weeks ago, Auckland City beat Solomon Islands champions Central Coast to lift the Oceana Champions League. A club from New Zealand has won 13 of the last 14 finals. But which country provided the other? Okay. Was it Tahiti who won, who were in the Confederations Cup? Yes. At Spain beat? Yes. I'm tempted by New Caledonia because I have a funny feeling there was a New Caledonian team at the Club World Cup at one point. Didn't they nearly qualify for this World Cup just gone as well? Yeah, they were in the playoffs.
15:04Bit of a golden generation going on down there. Because I think they have a lot of, as does Tahiti, French.
15:10Charlie Eccleshare:Name the three New Caledonian players, please. For 10 points. Christian Caronbo was born there, I think, wasn't he? He's one of the, as you said, like the diastro. I'm happy with New Caledonia. Yeah, the logic seems as good as any. So yeah, New Caledonia. New Caledonia is correct. Nice. Superb work on those last two questions. It was he and Genné Sport in 2019. Fair play. Fair play. You bounce back in that round. You have three points. That's our target for round one. Listeners, over to you. Okay, question one. Put these five things in order from largest to smallest. The number of points earned by Liverpool in the 2018-19 Premier League season.
15:50The number of Premier League goals scored by Ruud van Nistelrooy. The number of days Liam Resenia spent as Chelsea manager. the number of matches played at the 2026 World Cup and the number of Champions League goals scored by Kareem Benzema.
16:02Charlie Eccleshare:Okay, I feel like Champions League goals for Benzema might be the lowest. Could be. So, Ruvanis Roy was Premier League goals? Premier League goals for Benzema, yeah. He's a 100 club, right? Or is he? Is he like 99 or something, Ruvanis Roy? Well, he was there from 2001 to 2006. So, five seasons. Would he have averaged 20? I don't think he did. about that but maybe just under because his last season he sort of lost his place didn't he it'll be around 100 I don't think he's in the 100 club I think he fell just short but I might be thinking of somebody else so let's say let's say 100 for him I mean Liverpool they just missed on getting 100 yeah I think it may even it may even have been 99 it was that sort of it was like 98 or 99 so I don't think it was 99 I feel like that's a number that's more memorable I think 98 sounds about right so let's say 98 for them um Rosinha Day's not a clue well let's try to figure out the dates yeah he joined early January so would he have last when did when did they get rid of him what was the game that when did they get rid of Rosinha lost 3-0 to City was he still in charge then the guy no he wasn't oh no hang on McFarlane was in charge for this FA Cup semi-final I think and that was that was the first game wasn't it I think that was his first game so I think maybe City was his final game that he got sacked.
17:26Charlie Eccleshare:So when would the FA Cup semi-final have been? Well, the semi-final late April, yeah. That City game, there was that quite long international break. So that would have been like mid-April. I'm trying to think of news reports and long reads that sort of described his tenure in days. Well, I mean, it's a little over three months, I think. These are all very tight. We know that for sure. They're all going to be tight, which is, yeah. February, obviously, famously a short month. Games at the 2026 World Cup is 104, I think. Yeah, that feels right. I think that was like the new big number, 104. Liverpool 18-19 was like, was it 97?
18:02It was just under 100. They just didn't get 100. I think it was like, they were on for it and then they slowed down a bit. So about around 98, we reckon.
18:11Charlie Eccleshare:I don't think Bentham's Champions League goals are anywhere near 100. I think like you think of the historical leaders of that classification, it's usually around 60. I know it's exploded since then, but I don't think he was anywhere near 100. So I'd say Benzema is the lowest. Then I would say Rosinia. Then I'd say Liverpool-Venestroy. Is he in the 100 club, for God's sake? How many seasons did he have? He was there five years. So if he averaged 20 goals, he got 100. But I'm not sure he would have done because his last season would have been fewer. And he wasn't... I mean, his early seasons, he was getting like 22s, 23s, 24s, that sort of mark.
18:47Charlie Eccleshare:I'm convinced he fell just short of the 100 club. and it's quite surprising for some people, but I don't think that episode exists on Sky. So I'm going to go for Benzema, Rossinia, Van Nistelrooy, Liverpool, World Cup. I mean, it's so close that I don't think it's massive kick yourself territory because I think we'll all be quite close. Don't worry about that. Don't worry about that. Okay, so this is our final five. Dave, you happy with this? Yep. Okay, we go for Benzema as the smallest, then Rossinia, then Ruud van Nistelrooy, then Liverpool's points total, then the total World Cup games in 2026.
19:19Okay, I'm afraid that's incorrect. The number of days Liam Rossini was Chelsea manager is the highest, 106. And then you were there or thereabouts and everything else. The World Cup matches was 104, as you said, Adam. Liverpool's points was 97, lost it by a point behind City. And then Van Nistelrooy scored 95 Premier League goals. And Benzema scored 90 Champions League goals. So he's the lowest. You weren't miles off. Oh, was it the 18-19? Not that it mattered, but it was the 18-19. In my head, we were doing the 19-20 season. 18-19. No, no, that's just my... I just didn't hear it. It doesn't make any difference.
19:51Charlie Eccleshare:Take it to Cass. What's going to happen here? He's hoping for a rough apology. I think they got 99 in the year they won the league, so it would be in the same position anyway. No, no, no. Charlie. I'm not queering it. It's my stupidity. Question two, please, listeners. Question two. Which team has the most EFL playoff appearances without ever being promoted? I'm including semifinals in that. Promoted via the playoffs. They've never been promoted via the playoffs in any division. Fucking hell. I'm afraid I have absolutely no idea what's going on. Millwall? No, I think they've come up from League One in the playoffs.
20:29Charlie Eccleshare:Not County? No. So who are the championship sort of regulars in the playoffs, Dave, without getting promoted? Reading have had a few, haven't they? Have they gone up via the playoffs, Reading? They lost that Bolton one in, what was it, 95? I feel like they must have had some near misses. they came up they came up very comfortably they got like 100 points in whatever it must have been 05-06 then when they came up that other time was that through the playoffs when they came up? No, possibly not a bad shout it's whether they've got like a League 1 playoff win in there at some point I don't think so, I think they stormed through those divisions but I'm not convinced they're the answer I don't mind it, Bristol City have they done no, I don't think that's part of their law they're just I think Sheffield...
21:18Charlie Eccleshare:I don't know, like Chesterfield or something like that. United? I hesitate to use the word slugs, but it's going to be some slugs. Have Sheffield United ever won a play-off? When they came up in 06, was that... No, they were second that season. Don't mind Sheffield United, you know. They lost to Wolves, they lost to Burnley in a play-off final. They lost to... Did they lose to Huddersfield in that one where the goalkeeper missed the penalty in the shootout? Was that for Sheffield United as well in League One? Dave? Yeah, just do it. Sheffield United. The answer is, with 10 appearances in the playoffs without ever being promoted via them, Sheffield United.
21:57Oh! Very good.
22:02Charlie Eccleshare:I just didn't want to hear those dreading words, I'm afraid. We're on the board. Question three, please. Question three, you'll be pleased to hear, is a multiple choice one, so you don't have to deliberate as much as he did on that one. Which of the following England internationals has not appeared on the High Performance podcast? Tyrone Mings, Eric Dyer, Jordan Henderson or Harry Maguire? Oh, fucking hell. Now, I think Mings has because based on what is he? He was an estate agent, wasn't he? And that feels like something they would interview him about. he was a lettings agent before he became a footballer yeah while he was playing semi-pro it does yeah whether that means he did go on it also i mean i don't i don't want to you know try and break the spell here but it doesn't feel like a name that they would throw in as the incorrect one if you see what i mean maybe yeah i know what you mean um sounds like we've got in your heads a little bit there endo dyer i believe has the same reps as ryan mason and mason's been on it so i wonder you know if it's sort of like you know that and he's got the languages thing the growing up in a foreign country thing that feels good on it yeah yeah he's good talker dyer's a good talker so i think he would have been on so it's between henderson and mcguire then he also feels like he's a believable option i think it might be henderson i i'm playing lots of sort of variables here i think mcguire might have been on i i have like a 10 % memory of some social clips of him saying how hard it's been and how he has to be mentally strong and deal with stuff.

23:40Charlie Eccleshare:But not much else to go on. This is a really hard one. I think Mings and Dyer would have been on. I haven't got a memory of any of them being on. Yeah, no, nor me. Not that I listen to it. No, I don't listen to it either, obviously. No, but I'd have thought it would have popped up. Like there would have been social clips that would have popped up. I mean, there probably were. Incredible piece of information about the agent. I mean, will that help us? Could that get us over the line? We didn't legislate for that level of background in any of these plays. I think Henderson Charlie. You reckon he hasn't been on?
24:06I reckon he hasn't. He did that big interview, didn't he, with The Athletic when he moved to Saudi, which... I don't think he did anything else. Yeah, and that may have put him off because I don't think he came off particularly well. Yeah, and he is quite high performance.
24:20Charlie Eccleshare:There's a lot of high performance aspects to him. I just think the other three seem more viable in various different ways. I sort of think Maguire is the least high performance-y of the four. Oh, no question. No question at all. but that's partly why I've gone for him. But you think he's more accessible? I just think they would have had him on to talk about... He loves talking about mentality and that sort of stuff. He's always banging on about how strong-willed he's had to be at Manchester United specifically. Let's go with Henderson then. Okay, we're going with Jordan Henderson. So Tyrone Mings and Eric Dier have both appeared on it, whether it was his links to Ryan Mason that got him that week with Jake Humphrey, we don't know.
24:56The correct answer and the player that has not appeared on the High Performance Podcast is Harry Maguire. Ah! Damn it.
25:05Charlie Eccleshare:Unlucky. Sorry, lads. Right, question four, please, listeners. Question four is, 14 Premier League matches have their own Wikipedia page. There are five managers who have managed a team in more than one of the matches on this list for a point named four of the five. Wow, Russian doll of a question. Right, 14 wikis, five managers, four of those managers. That's a great question. Would Harry Redknapp, would the 7-4, would he manage it then and then the 4-4 Arsenal Spurs? Spurs 9-0. 9-1. Probably has his wiki page. I'm actually not sure about that. Should we get the games first and then think about the managers?
25:48Yes.
25:48Charlie Eccleshare:Yeah. Battle of the bridge. Famously does not have a wiki page. The basis of an article, the last article I wrote for The Athletic and probably the last one I'll ever write. yeah you're quite you're the most wicky across I would say big time what are ones you know Liverpool 4 Newcastle 3 okay yeah not sure if the follow up has one don't think it does but let's just keep that in store you should just have a subsection on that page yeah you'd think so QPR sorry Man City QPR Aguera again who was the QPR manager Mark Hughes was QPR wasn't he the 7-4 yes exactly yeah is that Portsmouth Reading Portsmouth-Redding.
26:28Yeah, so that's why I think Redknapp, because he must have another one. Either the 9-1 or the 4-0 Arsenal-Spurs.
26:33Charlie Eccleshare:I think, were both Leicester's 9-0s in the Premier League? Or did Southampton get beat 9-0 twice? They got beat 9-0 twice, yeah. By United and... Leicester. By Leicester. I think all the 9-0s have Wikipedia page, so... United-Ipswich as well. Oh, well, if there's two 9-0s, that was Ralph Hasenhutl was the Southampton manager for both, I'm pretty sure. okay I think the 9-1 has a wiki page and Redknapp was in there okay yeah the 8-2 has a wiki page yeah and well if United Ipswich 9-0 had one sorry Battle of Old Trafford Battle of the Buffet okay so that's Wenger Wenger definitely Pizzagate well then Ferguson as well has both of those yeah so we should in theory have four of the five now if all those games so let's just get a little reserve let's have a little reserve for the games that would have been on there give me some notable Premier League games and I'll tell you whether it's got a wiki page or not to some degree of certain the Newcastle 4 Arsenal 4 which again would be Wenger okay that would have been Pards yeah possibly that 5-0 the United West Brom last game don't think it does just wasn't momentous enough it's just a quirk yeah there's no backstory there's no context no no well it's Fergie's last game that's also true but it's end of season Hazen Hussle-Redknapp Wenger-Ferguson quite like that line up Fergie and Wenger make sense don't they yeah and Harry Redknapp we're pretty sure 7-4 he uses this question Harry Redknapp He was born to be in this question.
27:57Charlie Eccleshare:And then Hassan Hussle, if we think the 9-0s... I think the 9-0s will always qualify because they're rare enough. And so they'll pass the threshold. So I'm happy with this, guys. Should we do it? We're going to go for Ralph Hazenhuttle, Harry Redknapp, Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson. OK, I can tell you that Sir Alex Ferguson is correct. He's on there for seven of the 14. Arsene Wenger is correct. He's on there for three of the 14. Ralph Hassan Hussle is correct. He's been on there for two. the 2-0-0 as you said. I'm afraid Harry Redknapp is incorrect. He's on there for the 7-4 as you said but that's his only entry.
28:33The other two you could have gone for are Mark Hughes, he's on there for the famous Aguero game in 2012. Oh and then Manu Man City 4-3. The 4-3 yeah so he's the only one on there for two different teams and then Mancini is the other one you want obviously the Aguero game again and the 6-1 against United.
28:51Charlie Eccleshare:Oh we should have gone through all the you know the big six thrashings really shouldn't we anyway but that's okay again we've come so close yet so far we remain on a single point we're 3-1 down and it's time for question five please listeners can you name the last three scotland players to score at a major tournament mcgin yeah mcgin in the world cup craig burley craig burley scored dinney against uh norway i think it was in the 98 world cup who scored for them at the covid euros because that was their last tournament right yeah no they were they were at 24 euros as well okay they got thrashed by germany in the first game i was there i was in cologne when they were there and i think they did score because i remember them celebrating i mean mctominay if indeed they did score yeah all i can remember is that czech republic game where schick scored well it was nil nil against england it was yeah and then that was a two nil defeat wasn't it yeah so who's what was their other game Who else was in our group?
29:52Croatia. Croatia. And that was at Hampton as well, right? Yeah. But I think they scored in 2024.
30:00Charlie Eccleshare:So let's put Burley in if we think that that was their last goal they scored in 98. Obviously, McCoy scored at Euro 96. So let's just try and find the 2024 goal scorer. Yeah, because otherwise, if it wasn't, then it would be John Collins because he scored against Brazil in the first game in 98. So it would be Collins, Burley, McGinn, but then I'm pretty sure they scored because I remember being in the fan park in Cologne and hearing all the Scots go mad would it have been McTominay he's probably the most likely option or who would they have up front Shankland no I think he was too early for him Dykes Shea Adams McTominay Burley that's our three do you think they didn't score at 2021 Euros yeah I don't think so Dave unless you can advance us.
30:50Yeah, no, I can't. Or we just go Collins Burley and hope you're sure someone scored. I'm sure enough.
30:59Charlie Eccleshare:For John McGinn, Scott McTominay and Craig Burley. John McGinn is correct. He scored against Haiti at this year's World Cup. Scott McTominay is correct. He scored against Switzerland at Euro 2024. Craig Burley is incorrect. The correct answer is Callum McGregor, who scored against Croatia at Euro 2020. Nearly. Unlucky. A couple of near misses there. We'd never have got him. Let's not get ourselves up about it. Good process, boys. Okay. Morale hovering. It's 3-1 to the listeners after round one. And this quiz is brought to you in association with NordVPN. For those who don't know, VPN stands for Virtual Private Network.

If you know the answer, get in touch and we'll give you a shout out on the next episode. Who am I? I made my international debut at 15 before making my top flight debut for the Champions League holders. I played in six different countries, top scored for one club in the same season that I was their interim player manager, racked up over 400 goals for club and country, and I'm now the president of my country's football federation.
32:19Charlie Eccleshare:Get in touch if you know the answer for that one. 34:53Charlie Eccleshare:Welcome back to the Football Clichés Quiz. The listeners lead 3-1 after round one. And Pat, how are you feeling now? Pretty good. Yeah, I think we dragged it back at the end of that first round. I was a bit worried when we were one from three. But yeah, some good England B knowledge from Sam and Johnny dragged us to respectability. Johnny, I dread to think what your backup questions were in this epic Google Doc that you had going. Because they were tough, those early ones. So I'll give you a bit of insight. One of our questions was actually, who was the last player to play for England B that hasn't also received a full international cap?
35:28And the answer to that was Stephen Taylor against Albania. So it's a good job we vetoed that question. I think Pat vetoed it for perhaps being a bit too niche.
35:37Charlie Eccleshare:Round two, Sam, is going to be the audio round for both of us. This is very much your wheelhouse. Are you looking forward to this one? I am. I'm quite excited for this one. Trepidation is about what you've got planned for us, because I know you're an audio whiz and very creative with your translations. That's why they call me. Okay, let's see if we can claw things back, cliches, in round two. So it is the audio round. Clichés will go first. Question one, listeners. Which game is Richard Keyes very passionately previewing here? There are many different ways of playing this wonderful game of ours.
36:09I don't want England losing gloriously tonight. I've read everything about distance covered the other night. Probably ran less than Joe Hart. High intensity running. Probably didn't complete one. and yet bossed the game from where he was playing. Let's just win, please. Now is the time to win. Let's just win, please. Okay, my first thought is World Cup 2014 because that's when he just moved over to Qatar, wasn't it? That's when he started doing his little videos. So what would that be, the Italy game? Maybe the Uruguay game because it was a kind of win or, well, draw or bust, I guess. but yeah and so they could be referencing the italy game and saying like one of the italy well yeah that could be where they was the previous game he's referencing in there yeah unless it unless it's 2012 and he's talking about the italy quarterfinal but i don't think he'd be pleading in the same way as like you said in 2014 when it was a must win fixture i know it was a knockout but i guess i guess a draw would have been an okay result and they could have beaten costa rica in the last game so it's he's talking about them not playing it safe to get a draw and go for yeah well what other tournaments are joe hart involved he was still there with 2016 right at 12 14 and 16 yeah but 16 there wouldn't have been a game like that because you're not saying that against iceland no no i think it's got logic sam can we hear it again sorry there are many different ways of playing this wonderful game of ours i don't want england losing gloriously tonight i i've read everything about distance covered the other night probably ran less than joe hart high intensity running probably didn't complete one and yet bossed the game from from where he was playing let's just win please now is the time to win let's just win please you've bleeped out andrea pierlo Yeah, he's referencing that game saying Pirlo ran less than a heart.
38:20Dictated terms. Yeah. So England-Uruguay 2014 World Cup. I think we're all happy with that. Final answer.
38:26Charlie Eccleshare:England versus Uruguay 2014 World Cup. You're correct. Well played, Sam. Well done. Andrea Pirlo was the name. Okay. Wow. I love having Kesey's words poured over in that much detail. It's great. Guys, it's really pleading there, isn't it? It's dreadful. 4-1 to the listeners. Question 2. what goal is Jamie Carragher analysing here? And it is, it's a special goal, there's no doubt, but we want to get inside the head of the attacking player and what you saw. You're on the edge of the box, your first thought is not, can I get the ball going, go forward and score a goal? So the first thing is now, I get the ball, I look up.
39:05Can I get a pass off? Can I play it into someone? And this, almost at the halfway line, he's got two or three players converging on him. he runs a hand goes past him I think it's only now he thinks I can score a goal I mean it sounded like the Maradona goal I thought it might be Son's goal against against Burnley yeah or I can't remember the Bufal one is the other one that came to mind the one against West Brom was that? you're the happy hunting groundsman Pat that was a home so it doesn't count but yeah yeah I mean there's no reason why he'd be doing the Maradona one unless it was some kind of weird retrospective analysis but Sky probably wouldn't have the rights for that either would they so yeah Son against Burnley Son or what about Eden Hazard v Arsenal because that was quite a long dribbly goal that's how they technically call it I think I'll go with Son because I don't want to have pivoted away from the wrong answer okay yeah we'll go Son Hingman against Burnley
40:11Charlie Eccleshare:The answer is Son Heung-min versus Burnley. All played. 5-1 to the listeners. Question three in the audio round. Name the Champions League final being given the pre-match treatment here. Yes, it's the pinnacle of the Champions League, the European Cup final. The first final to be held here. And what a fitting stage it is for this great event. As we convened, it's a great occasion. It's going to be a very noisy evening indeed. and we hope that we have a brilliant match to look forward to. Well, Sir Bobby's with us and Ali's with us for the occasion. Do you think the match will live up to the occasion?
40:50Absolutely. There are part too many wonderful players on show for them to be negative. The stake is too high. I just think it'll be a firecracker. I think my first thought is the Real Madrid one at Hampden Park because if they've got Ali McCoyst, I assume it's the Ali that's there, that would make sense. But he said that it's the first final at that stadium and that Real Madrid, Eintracht Frankfurt one was there. I mean, it's got to be between about 2000 and 2004 because Des Lynam's presenting. So 2004, was it Gelsenkirchen, which presumably was the first time it was there? Yeah, I just don't think you'd be listing out all the great players.
41:35No, 03 was at Old Trafford and it was at Juve. Yeah, that's a great shout. I wouldn't have had a final before. I was thinking either that or Real Madrid Valencia in 2000, which was at the Stade de France, which is obviously quite new at the time. So it would have been the first final there. But Old Trafford, I like that because both teams had loads of great players. And would McCoy have been doing punditry as early as 2000? Yes, probably. But 2003 is more likely. and yeah I was going to say what Bobby Robson would have been Newcastle manager wouldn't he yeah I'm happy with 2003 if you guys are yeah Johnny yeah 2003 Old Trafford
42:16Charlie Eccleshare:some of the most immaculate logic ever employed in the Clichés quiz some of the most immaculate disagreeing and picking apart of logic I've ever seen in the Clichés quiz the answer is Juventus vs AC Milan 2003 at Old Trafford kiss of death from Sir Bobby nil nil wasn't it I don't know if that played into my hands or not honestly um oh when they almost went for 2004 dave and then that then and then they realized that there were no good players on show how annoying i thought you might have gone for the you were gonna go for the 2000 one there but um but um des hadn't joined join itv by then had he so everybody we tested this on went for hamden but then of course you say that first time i think i got this one right okay sorry sorry day anyway uh regardless it's 6-1 to the listeners what a lead they've opened up here with two questions to go in round two.
43:03Charlie Eccleshare:Question four. Who is this dubbed into Welsh? And what are they talking about? Well, ydy peilotiad yr RAF yn gwybod si ti am diffyn? Ydden nhw 'n gwybod si ti ddeliw a set pís? Ydden nhw 'n gwybod si ti ddor am groesiad? Ydden nhw 'n gwybod si ti, chi 'n gwybod, dweud wrth ar asgyrchol i dynnu i mewn? Ydden nhw 'n gwybod si ti gyfathrebu? I, dwi 'n golygu, iawn, ond mae pob peldroedd rydw 'n gwybod si ti gyfathrebu. sure, they're going to be a bit more than a year you know, what more anodd is to say I'm out, I'm out, I'm out, I'm out and I'm out, I'm out, I'm out and all, you know, you know, you know I'm out, I'm out, I'm out, I'm out clear you, you know, there's a lot of a a-r-a-r-ae-f in person on a-r-g-o-el who's got to see if I know a-r-e-r-en I think this is Jamie O 'Hara reacting to somebody getting was it like the army in to help with communication and he's saying like do they know how to defend a set piece, do they know how to do this do they know how to do that, and he's like poo-pooing the idea on Sky or TalkSport or wherever he was talking.
43:53I was getting Scouse vibes from coming through the Welshness, but that might just be a history of listening to North Whalian people. I'm at a bit of a loss here. I mean, I was thinking, I feel like you said City a lot, so is it a pep clip? But I wouldn't be confident on that. So I defer to, I mean, O 'Hara, it's an incredible get if it's O 'Hara. because he's like questioning, yeah, he's like being a kind of proper football man, being like, why are they doing this? This is nonsense. Can they do this? Can they do this? Can they do this? And they said set piece. That was basically the only word I understood.
44:30I'm good to go with it if you are, Johnny. Yeah, in the absence of anything else. Power fire away. Go for Jamie O 'Hara.
44:38Charlie Eccleshare:Your answer is Jamie O 'Hara. What is the answer, Dave? Do RAF pilots know how to defend? Do they know how to deal with a set piece? Do they know how to come for a cross? Do they know how to tell your winger to tuck in? Do they know how to communicate? I mean, yeah, all right. But all footballers know how to communicate. Surely they're Premier League football players. How hard is it to say, get in, tuck in, get tight, stop the cross, get back? Keepers, away, clear it. RAF pilot is an incredible person who knows how to fly a plane. Yeah, I love that bit. Wow. That's an astonishing get. Yeah, incredible, pal.
45:18Well done.
45:18Charlie Eccleshare:Oh, yeah, well, yeah, an unmistakable cadence in some ways. But yes, 7-1, and as Dave Walker famously said, Pat Noon is inevitable. 7-1 to the listeners. Your fifth question of round two. Who is being discussed here? Back after 11 years out of the Premier League. Paul Merson, did the choice of surprise you? Shot. Absolutely shot. Couldn't believe it. He's got quite a pedigree, doesn't he? A pedigree at top teams. You need managers and horses for courses that are going to set up a way to get you your 40 points. And I just don't think he ticks the box at all for me. Big mistake. Big mistake. Yeah, I think I've got that.
46:01Oh, for fuck's sake.
46:05Well, if the maths is correct, then Ranieri left Chelsea in 2004 and he joined Leicester in 2015. So much derision from everyone, really. That fits. And yeah, so he's predicting a renegation battle, but obviously it went completely differently. Yeah, my only thought was Joe Kinnear until they said he's managed some top teams. Quickly shifted focus. I think your logic makes perfect sense there, Sam.
46:32Charlie Eccleshare:Let's go Claudio Ranieri, please. The answer is Claudio Ranieri. Wow, well done. Clean sweep. This is entering Wikipedia page territory, isn't it? I hope so. I hope so. Good expansion for the pod, if anything. 8-1. I don't think we've ever had an 8-1 lead in the cliches. We've got a whole round in hand. We do. We do have a round in hand, Charlie. That is correct. Second time I've been losing 8-1 in a week. Oh, God. Someone in the skullcap about to issue Raph 2. Right. Round two, the audio round from the listeners. Take it away. So you're about to hear five pieces of commentary. Each clip will be stopped just before the co-commentator comes in.
47:15I want you to tell me who is that co-commentator. Oh, that's fun. Curveballs ahoy. Here's question one. Manwet has gone forward with Stewart to the right, Lineker and Howes to the left. Is Gascoigne going to have a crack? He is, you know. Oh, I say! Brilliant! Absolutely incredible. gee who is the co-commentator beside Barry Davis
47:41Charlie Eccleshare:not a clue I've never heard the co-commentator yeah besides obviously knowing that bit but I don't know the game highlights so it's BBC 1991 the instinct here says Brookings I was going to say would Brookings be there already by that point would he have been in situ or would it have been who was like a veteran who sort of came before when did co-coms become a thing did they even have co-coms yeah genuinely I mean, so Brookings... Unless it's, you know... Jimmy Hill might be an option. Yeah, Jimmy Hill. Was he a co-com or a pundit? More of a studium. Fuck. Jimmy Hill was a co-commentator. He did the 1986 World Cup with Barry Davis.
48:20Ah, OK. Was this not on Adam, one of your goals VHS? Don't remember the co-commentary for the reference.
48:27Charlie Eccleshare:Don't remember the co-commentary for the reference. Brookings or Hill. That would be my guess. I can't think who else it would have been around that time on the beam. might have been much more of a movable feast. It's basically whether it was just a little too early for Brookings or just a little too late for Jimmy Hill. I don't think Jimmy Hill would have done. Bobby Charlton was the co-coms in the semi-final of the 1990 World Cup. I think Bobby Charlton was on co-coms then. But not alone. I think there was somebody else. I think Brookings the percentage guess, isn't he? He probably is. Yeah.
49:03Charlie Eccleshare:Okay. The percentages aren't really going our way. No. We're going for Trevor Brooking. Okay. And the answer is? Come on, please. Paul Gascoigne, the scorer. The winner opening to the second. Yes! Fucking come on! Hello! Hello! I thought when he went up and he appeared to be shooting, I thought that was a bit optimistic from that lane, but he hit it superbly. Ah, no, I've been so happy to hear. I'm always happy to hear Trevor Brooking about that. Wow. Trevor thought we were going to be unlucky and go for someone else. No drug is better than that. Nothing. Right. Trevor Brooking is correct. Let's move on to question two.
49:39Charlie Eccleshare:Eight to be football cliches right now. Gerrard slipped and Denver Barr's in here. Out comes Mini-Lay, but Barr punishes of all people. Stephen Gerrard. Right, so this is post-Grey. Yes. So this is Carragher's first season. It's 13-14. And Neville was very much the guy at this point. weirdly was this game not the 4 or 4 30 I think it was before 4 30 but it wasn't the late late one was this like weirdly the 2 o 'clock game on the day or something I feel like it may have been but surely it would be Neville or Carragher wouldn't it? It's Tyler so Yeah so they've got the big the big gun Assume not Carragher Because of the Liverpool thing Yeah I guess so Neville, Smith If it's someone random it's going to be someone random and then not much we could do you can't legislate for that Yeah exactly I think Neville was the main co-com at this point.
50:35Charlie Eccleshare:Are there any other names that come to mind? Smith, Carrigan, Neville. Who else could it possibly have been in 2014 on Sky? Who was knocking around then as co-coms? Just so we can... Clive Allen. No. I mean, you'd occasionally get Chris Coleman popping up a little bit earlier than this. It's obviously not going to be him. If it's Chris Coleman, we draw right all. That's it. Should we go with Nev? Yeah, I mean, it's either him or Carragher. If it's Carragher, though, I'd be devastated. The toss-up is, are they more worried about being perceived to have Carragher as being biased, or are they more worried about pissing off Liverpool fans with Neville being anti-Liverpool?
51:14Charlie Eccleshare:Well, we know that Neville got the big games at that point. He did Chelsea at the Nou Camp two seasons previous. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So this was his third season. Carragher in the studio, Neville on co-coms. Let's go Neville. Yeah, we'll go for Neville. OK, you said Gary Neville. Let's see if you're right. It's a terrific moment for Chelsea for an awful one for the Liverpool skipper. He just lets it under his foot and panics. Loses his pussy. Nearly overthought that. And now his team. They've got a huge, huge task to get the three points that they need. Slightly high-pitched Neville still, isn't he?
51:48Charlie Eccleshare:Yeah. The only thing that I thought might sway you against Neville is this no ooh there. If ever there was a moment for one of those, surely it's the slip. No, definitely no Neville Golgazan for that one. But yeah, wow, wow, clinging on here. And now we've got Chris Coleman in the back pocket. He's bound to appear at some point. And give Clive Allen Pops up, I'll be so happy. Right, question three, I believe. Yes. Could they just spring the ultimate surprise, England? Here goes Campbell's at the bar. It's free. It's in. So, no, no slot in. The referee hasn't given it, I don't think. Right, this is Euro 2004.
52:28Charlie Eccleshare:This is the disallowed goal against Portugal at Euro 2004. Let me make sure we've got the game right here. Motti's starting to fray at the edges a bit here. You can hear it. Because he also, Campbell, had that disallowed goal against Argentina, didn't he? That was an ITV game, because that's the quickly Kevin. Can we have a clip again, just to make sure I've got the details right? I don't want to fool myself here. Could they just spring the ultimate surprise, England? Here goes Campbell to the bar! It's free! It's in! South, no, no slot in The referee hasn't given it, I don't think Yeah, Campbell's header hit the bar and it came back down And then it was nodded in Would it be Loro then, as co-coms?
53:04Charlie Eccleshare:I think it was Joe Royal Wow I'm not saying this has come up before But this has come up as a curveballing conversation before Joe Royal was the co-commentator on that game I like that Was he really? Yeah, it was On my head, completely be it I think it's Joe Royal I think you're right I think I've heard that It sounds crazy enough and we're sure it is that one. Yeah, because if you think what are the alternatives, it's not Argentina 98 because it didn't hit the bar and come down. It was like Shearer's elbow and stuff. So I think it hit the bar, came down and then somebody else headed it in. I think it was John Terry or somebody, but that kind of doesn't matter.
53:39Charlie Eccleshare:I'm pretty sure this is Portugal. Dave knows that this is 2004 era Motti as well. So I'm going to go for Joe Royal as our final answer. You correctly identified England-Portugal at Euro 2004 and you said Joe Royal as the co-commentator. Let's see if that is indeed correct. No! No slot in! The referee hasn't given it, I don't think. It doesn't look an awful lot wrong with this. Wow, Adam. Well played. What a reach that is. Joe Royal is correct. Oh my God. Our little WhatsApp group of the three of us is just fired off when you first mentioned Joe Royal. I was looking at your faces. There was nothing.
54:17Charlie Eccleshare:Joe Royal. Wow. It's mad. Utterly mad. But then it's 20 years ago. So 22 years ago I just don't remember him Knocking around as a commentator No I don't either I would never have got that Well played It's 8-4 And we move on to question 4 That's a lovely little reverse ball Scherler Oh Andre Scherler It's 7 Okay so that's the 7-1 Steve Wilson there Yeah Was it live on BBC? Was it But that seems odd That it would have been Steve Wilson Yeah I think it was live on BBC It was Strange though Because to tell you what this morning before the quiz. I watched the half-time analysis of this game to see if I could clip it up for the purposes of this quiz.
54:58Charlie Eccleshare:So it was the BBC's live coverage. Steve Wilson getting the semi.
55:08Again, is Loro still knocking around? He famously did the 2010 World Cup with Guy Mowbray. I think he's been moved on by then, I think. Or would he still have been paired with Mowbray at that point? Did they come back for it? He wasn't Shearer. He wouldn't have been doing Kogon necessarily, but that tournament was Rio's introduction as a pundit. Would he have done co-coms? No. He did ultimately, though, didn't he? He's done some for BT, but I don't think he's this early. Not for the BB.
55:34Charlie Eccleshare:Murphy? Could be. Loro feels like a no here. Murphy sounds more likely. Don't think Shearer did. He was in the studio. Because obviously Brazil was massive, and they couldn't have just been flying him around. He was in the studio. Danny Murphy's a good... I think Danny Murphy's a good shout. I quite like that. It's like the number two team. Nothing else has come to mind. Yeah, exactly. Wilson and Murphy. No Scottish voices back then. Anybody else that you can think of. Does feel quite Murphy era. Yeah, I think it does. Shall we go for Danny Murphy? Yeah. Alongside Steve Wilson. Let's think of the partnership as well.
56:08Charlie Eccleshare:They could have been going around together as the kind of, not first choice, but second choice. Exactly, yeah. Okay, we'll go for Danny Murphy, please. Okay, Brazil won Germany 7, which was live on the BBC. Steve Wilson was the commentator. and the co-commentator was It's seven! Stunning finish. I mean, every one of these is just sublime football. Where are the peanuts when you need them? Oh, because that was the World Cup where he had to sort of talk Jonathan Pearce off the ledge when there was that goal line technology thing. I think it's a different clip. Martin Keown is the correct answer.
56:47Charlie Eccleshare:I was about to say, look, we'd never have got it but if someone had chucked that name in between us, I think it would have rung a large buzz. But I think we probably still would have gone with Murphy. So let's not keep ourselves... Murphy's a solid guess. It remains 8-4. Can we get within three points? We need to. OK, so here is the final question of the audio round. A little bit more of a curveball regarding the level of match. Freddie Youngberg, Sergio Pizzorno. He's lifted in over Seaman. And that is a fabulous goal. Oh, he can hardly believe in himself An axe man A lead guitarist Sergio Pizzorno Has just scored one of the great soccer raid goals Oh, for fuck's sake Oh, okay Serge Tildesley So, I think So this might be the first soccer raid Because I think Serge Pizzorno scored in the first soccer raid He was certainly He's been all over soccer raid But I think he Who were the other names in there, by the way?
57:44Charlie Eccleshare:Jungberg Freddie Jungberg Seaman Oh, okay. Oh, okay. Ugh. Was it a celeb? Yeah, it'd be some fucking stupid celeb as well. And Dec or whatever. But what do they normally do for soccer? Would they normally have like a novelty? These days it's... No. Oh, fucking hell. It's Matterface, isn't it, these days, Ben? I feel like it might... It must be someone vaguely cliches adjacent or someone we'll find funny that we'll have talked about before. Like, I don't think it's just going to be a, you know, a kind of... It's not going to be Danny Murphy. but so who would have been who would have been alongside Clive in the early 2000s no it's not the early 2000s or is it mid 2000s it's just after Siemens retirement I guess when did Lundberg retire well Lundberg was still playing he was at West Ham in like 07-08 so I think this is like yeah 09 round up then so okay so late noughties probably where the clip again please Freddie Lundberg Sergio Pizzorno oh he's lifted in over Siemens and that is a fabulous goal Oh, he can hardly believe in himself An axe man A lead guitarist Sergio Pizzorno Has just scored one of the great soccer right goals Is it Sergio?
58:56Is it not just Serge? Listen again, I think the co-com goes Halfway through Let's see if we can discern anything Turn your volume up Freddie Young girl Sergio Pizzorno Who is lifted in over Seaman And that is a fabulous goal Oh, he can hardly believe in himself An axe man A lead guitarist Sergio Pizzorno Has just scored one of the great Soccer Aid goals I wasn't quite the whole I was hoping for one There was a couple of them But it's got to be someone jaunty And avuncular Like you're doing this gig Because you've got a bit of that in your locker It's not Grey, is it? Grey ever do Soccer Aid? Tealsy and Andy Grey?
59:41Charlie Eccleshare:If it is Just pre-Sky blowing up. We can just go for it anyway. Let's just do it. Yeah, fuck it. We're going to go for Andy Gray on Soccer Raid on ITV. Some sort of lovely benevolence from Sky. He'll do like a take a bow or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Fuck it. It was Soccer Raid 2012 for that goal. Oh, that's not Gray then. No! Which does immediately rule out Andy Gray. But the answer is a voice that Dave in particular will be very familiar with. Oh, no. One of the great soccer-rate goals First-class finish It's a first-class finish He does look up Chips it over him Into the part of the goal Excellent, excellent GT Hand on the heart Didn't even know he was alive in 2012 I have to say Oh, come on, come on Is that bad?
1:00:29Charlie Eccleshare:I don't know I can't remember when he died Sorry Died in 2017 Graham Taylor was the correct answer there I thought you got it, Dave With the little chuckle that he did When he scored the goal I have to say he never entered my mind I sort of yeah I know he did a lot on 5 Live didn't he I never really you never really think of him as a TV man but no not at all that would have been a million miles from where we were wow okay well superb round all round really the score is football cliches for the listeners 8 after the break the final round

1:02:37Oh, look at that! That is wonderful!
1:02:45Charlie Eccleshare:Welcome back to Football Clichés. We thought we were clawing our way back in round two, but the score is 8-4 to the listeners. Round three, the final round. We're going to alternate our questions for the final round to try and manufacture some sort of tension if we can. Listeners, you're in the lead. You can go first. What's your first question of the final round? OK, so our final round is top three goal scorers. For each question in this round, you'll be given a nation. For three points, you have to name the top three Premier League goal scorers from that nation. There is one point on offer per correct answer and you can submit a maximum of three answers.
1:03:23But if any of those answers are incorrect, you get zero points. So if you're unsure, you can play it safe and only submit one or two answers. So your first nation in this final round is Belgium. Lukaku is a name that comes to mind straight away. Trossard. He's absolutely in the top three, isn't he? Yeah. Trossard is another one. Hazard. And Hazard. Not a perfect goal scorer, but very potentially high. You've got quite a lot. And then there's Fellaini. Benteke. Benteke. Ooh Ooh We've suddenly got I don't think Trossard's high enough
1:03:57Charlie Eccleshare:Do you Charlie? Probably not I mean he had It's not prolific Benteke above Trossard Trossard would have had about Five seasons where he was scoring A reasonable number of goals But I reckon total He must have I don't know Four times I wouldn't risk it For the third one personally So Lukaku That's a lock isn't it? Benteke and Hazard? I don't know I don't know I'm not confident enough About Benteke He had some good seasons Palace And then he had that sort of palace spell. If we get one wrong, we get zero points. A nail in the coffin. I mean, how many do you need to be in the top three here? Lukaku's, if we say Lukaku's the top one, you probably don't need, like, that many.
1:04:36Well, how many? I mean, Fellaini, do you think he wouldn't have quite got enough? I don't think he's like, he's not prolific, is he? He's like a regular goal threat. But he wasn't like, he's never getting, consistently getting... Double figures. Double figures every season, is he? No. Hazard, how many would he have, like, Would he have averaged about 10 a season for a period? And he was there 2012 till 2019? He's got a Sky programme where they show all his goals. So he must have around 70, you'd think, averaging around 10.
1:05:05Charlie Eccleshare:He's in the top three. I'm happy with that. So then Benteke probably over Trossard of Fellaini. If I absolutely had to go for it and there was no risk, I would go with Benteke. If we go for it and we miss. That's the problem. But we do sort of need to roll the dice in a way. so just thinking when was Benteke I mean he must have been there he must have been in the Premier League for about a decade because he was still scoring I can't remember he scored a really good header in 2021 against Spurs for Palace and he must have joined them in he joined Villa in what 2011 around that kind of that sort of period maybe a bit later everywhere else he was alright wasn't he I think he was alright I mean he didn't score many at Palace but even if he was there I just want to register my concerns about this but you know should we just take the two though I trust Charlie on this sort of thing If he was there for around 10 years, he only needs to be getting five or six to have more than Trossard and Fellaini.
1:05:55We've got to play the game here, though. We've got to stay in the game. Yeah, we do. If we get nothing and then they get three, and let's be honest, they're going to get three every question here. I'm backing them to get level three. We need to get three as well. Either we get zero or three doesn't matter. Come on, let's decide what we're going to do. I think we should just go Lukaku and Hazard. So do I, Charlie. I kind of feel we've got, in a way, nothing to lose because we're already quite a long way behind. But I'll go with the majority. It halves the gap.
1:06:25Charlie Eccleshare:Yeah, I would like to simply go for Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard for two points, please. So you didn't mention Kevin De Bruyne at any point. But it's a good decision because he's not in the top three anyway. Fine. Okay. So you said Romelu Lukaku, who is first with 121 goals. You said Eden Hazard, who is third with 185 goals. Wow. So that's two points. Just 85, not 185. It was 100 in the old championship, old division one, and then he scored 85. The man you missed who would have secured you three points if you'd gone for him with 86 goals was Christian Benteke. Fair play. So two points. Sorry, Charles.
1:07:08No, we made the right decision there. Yeah, we did.
1:07:10Charlie Eccleshare:The scoreline looks much better now. Yeah. Yeah, it's 8-6. We objectively didn't. Charlie, it's fine. It's a solid start to the final round. Don't do this. Morale is wavering on the cliches team here. Okay. Right, listeners, your round three is, of course, Happy Hunting Grounds. We're going to offer you a choice of levels one to three, and you have to name the goal scorer and the season to get those one to three points. No half points available here. Listeners, what level are you going to go for in question one? Well, I think I see more twos that I think should be a three than I do threes that I think should be a four.
1:07:48So by that logic, we'll go for level three, please, Ed.
1:07:51Charlie Eccleshare:Who has scored for Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road? That's quite a strong start. Ooh, that's a tough level three. Should be a four. We've got, what, the first eight seasons of the Premier League to work with. Yeah, Mark Bright had some decent seasons at Sheff Wednesday, didn't he? Mid-90s. then you've got David Hurst who was pretty consistent for a few years and then Carbone the cameo a bit later Mark DeGryser Gilles DeBuilder Gerald Seabon I can't think of I can't think of any I don't have anything specific but games to my head Carbone 97, 98 or something when was they good ever or when were Leeds I mean they were quite solid in the early first couple of years of the Premier League they finished top half I think first two years and probably and Leeds were good in 1999-2000 when Sheffield Wednesday got relegated so we should probably stay clear with that yeah I don't know to me it could be any one of like ten names Andy Booth Andy Booth Andy Booth Spurs legend right come on name a Sheffield Wednesday player who has scored at Elland Road please let's go Benito Carboni 97-98 okay Leeds 1 Sheffield Wednesday 2 shit this is big goal scorers after 51 minutes John Newsome and after 83 minutes Andy Booth we got boothed you got boothed you're the Booth boys the score's 8-6 we're not in the driving seat but we are reaching for it come on boys we're in the room we're in the conversation question 2 please from the listeners ok your second nation that you don't have to name the top 3 Premier League goal scorers for is the Republic of Ireland.
1:09:42Charlie Eccleshare:Robbie Keane. Keane. Absolutely jumps off the... Right, let's cover the De Bruyne situation here. Let's make sure we don't miss anybody that we ought to get. Roy Keane. Yeah, how many were you thinking he would have got in his, what, 12 years? Again. No, yeah, 12 years. He was there... He was in the first season, wasn't he, with Forrest? Yeah, then he left for Celtic 2005. Left in 2005, yeah. So 13 seasons. Let's say about six a season max. Yeah, for that, I reckon probably topping about five. Because he also missed a whole lot. He missed basically a whole season with the ACL. So that's about 65.
1:10:20Shane Long? Yep. Kevin Doyle? Stephen Reid. Long and Doyle are quite... And I think Long has more longevity than Doyle, doesn't he? Yeah, he would have played more. I mean, he was such like a wouldn't score goals, but it would be a nuisance. What about Jonathan Walters? Yeah, penalty taker. Popped up with quite a few for Stoke. God, this is hard.
1:10:42Charlie Eccleshare:He's a great goal-scoring midfield, as he, than strikers to me here now after Robbie Keane. Clinton Morrison. Damien Duff. He must be in that top three. Niall Quinn. Oh, big Quinny. Big Niall. Again, he didn't score loads. Not many in the Prem. Yeah, he got a few. I don't, yeah, I don't think he's a Prem consideration here. He won't be far off because I think the bar's quite low, but I think Damien Duff and Robbie Keane we can say quite confidently. You're confident that Damien Duff is in the top three Irish Premier League goalscorers? I think Damien Duff, he had seasons. We've got to give this to you after Benteke.
1:11:14This is the problem. Yeah, no, I just think Damien Duff, he had some really good seasons. In a way, none of these other guys, I mean, Kevin Doyle maybe had that one good season for Reading. Do we not think Shane Long, who played for quite a few different clubs, was still scoring goals into the early 2020s? Yeah, possibly just by accumulation. but I just think with Duff I mean he was he was good he had a good few years where he was actually like a properly good Premier League player in a way none of these other guys did and then he stuck around still he was at Fulham for a while wasn't he we must have had about a decade
1:11:46Charlie Eccleshare:I'm not confident about Long or Duff personally if you offered me a point now I would take it what are we saying Roy Keane would have got then I think Roy Keane would have got about 60 if he's averaging 4 or 5 a season if he's averaging 5 then he's getting 65 he's got 65 but he left also that 05 would Duff have scored more than Roy Keane? I don't know how many seasons would Damien Duff have got like double did he ever get double figures he's getting like 8 maybe 8 9 goals he must have done he must have scored quite a few to get that move to Chelsea but Chelsea didn't score many goals of course at Chelsea he then didn't yeah so I think like 2 good seasons with Blackburn where he probably would have got I just think Shane Long striker like Irish striker I don't feel there were so I'm thinking of their 2002 squad yeah is there anyone quite a good squad but Matty Holland Ian Hart yeah that's a good shout three kicks not enough really he's not scoring that many he's probably not even outscoring Roy Keane god this is really difficult it's more of a strategy thing than an answers thing I really would happily take a point here and close it who the other two are I don't think we're keeping ourselves again really we'll go with just Robbie Keane please okay so Robbie Keane is of course correct with 126 goals and second place you could have had Niall Quinn with 59 and third is Shane Long with 56 so you did mention all the names but you navigated it well if we'd gone with long there we would have been shitting ourselves that's good keep keep scoreboard ticking it's eight seven question two for the listeners what level are you going for in happy hunting grounds one to three level three please you're going for a level three not mucking about here we go who has scored for Watford at the vitality okay so they came up they came up together in 2015 so it got Igalo and Igalo and Dini is that when they one of them 15-16 will be correct I'm sure it's just which one um later on they had like Delafoe got a few didn't he yeah I think Igalo and Dini are the presented shouts.
1:13:54I mean, Dini especially because he covers, what, five, six seasons. Yeah. Igaro's second season he only got one or two goals, I think. So Dini more consistent. Yeah, if it's Igaro, it's likely to only be 15, 16. Yeah, he had like a great three months and then nothing. And then Watford players more recently. I think the last time they were up, I don't think Bournemouth were in the league. I might be wrong. No, 21, 22, Bournemouth got promoted and Watford got relegated.
1:14:22Charlie Eccleshare:Watford at the Vitality I think Deeney's the presenter shout personally Igarlo outscored him that first season though didn't he yeah if we're going season specific which we have to do Deeney was on pens as well wasn't he yeah I guess so yeah it's 50-50 but I'd go Igarlo but that's just a Manchester United fan in you Pat yeah that's it United legend you are the happy hunting grounds king so I'm not going to I'm happy to go with Galo 15-16, that's fine Okay, with not much confidence we're going for Odio Nigalo 2015-16 Odio Nigalo 15-16 Bournemouth 1, Watford 1 Goal scorer for the Hornets on the stroke of half-time David Walker Odio Nigalo Ah Fair play Could be decisive but there's still a way to go 11-7 the listeners lead Question three for cliches, please.
1:15:20Please can you tell me the top three Premier League goal scorers from Scotland? Okay. McGinn. We need more than one point, I think, in this one. Oh, my God.
1:15:31Charlie Eccleshare:John Spencer. Kevin Gallagher. Kevin Gallagher's good. Duncan Ferguson, of course. Yes. So, big dunks in there. McTominay has got quite a few. I would say is McGinn. I'd say McGinn's probably scored more than McTominay in the Premier League. Yeah. Really? well I mean maybe he might have scored more than McTominay but is he really in the top three of all time so Duncan Ferguson Kevin Gallagher's not a bad shout James McFadden you've got quite a few for Everton Don Hutchison I mean McFadden went through a period where he was scoring quite regularly Brian McClare ooh yeah just again to be considered but I don't think he yeah he didn't really no more like yeah 92-93 93-94 I think he was there in 94-95 he was I mean he was still there in 95-96 but he barely played and certainly barely scored.
1:16:19I mean, Ferguson and Gallagher. I mean, Gallagher, he wasn't prolific, was he? No, he scored a few really good goals. Once Shearer had left. He's got the longevity. He was a first-choice-ish forward for a good team for quite a while. Yeah. I reckon that probably takes him into top three. Him and Ferguson. I mean, John Spencer isn't a bad shout, because again, he was sort of a regular, wasn't he? I wouldn't have backed him to score more than Gallagher.
1:16:48Charlie Eccleshare:Or McGinn, actually, for that matter. But Ferguson's our number one. Well, how many do you think McGinn's got? I quite like McGinn. They came up in 2019. So he's had seven seasons. Again, he's probably averaging, what, five a season? Something like that? Darren Fletcher. About 35. Darren Fletcher, yeah. What do we need, really? I mean, so if we get one point, we're back to what? Three behind. Three behind. I don't know. They could draw a blank in Happy Hunting Ground. They could. But they could also, if they get one right. Fuck. this is the third question if they get it right and we only get one I think we need to stay in the game don't we should we go for Gallagher as well if we get nothing and then they get three we've got two questions after this right yeah so if we get nothing here we'll have six points left to get and they can win it with the next question so I think we have to avoid getting nothing Duncan Ferguson alone alright sorry Charles we're going to go for Duncan Ferguson please Duncan Ferguson is correct he is the top Scottish goal scorer with 68 goals in second place is Kevin Gallagher with 56 goals it's so close in third is Stephen Fletcher with 53 goals would have gone for him would have gone if had thought of we're in it we're still in the game it's 11-8 to the listeners it's time for their third question of Happy Hunting Grounds what level are you going to go for?
1:18:16Charlie Eccleshare:Sticking at three. Level three. Who has scored for Wolves at Craven Cottage? Stephen Fletcher? Yeah, I was going to say the aforementioned. Maybe. Was the Stephen Fletcher moment? It wasn't, it wasn't Craven Cottage, was it? Let's hope not, yeah. Raoul Jimenez. Yeah, my mind instantly went to him as well, obviously because he played to Fulham as well, but I don't think when he was at Wolves, Fulham were up. Yeah. Oh yeah, they were yo-yoing then, so they came up together in 2018, so they would have played. 18-19 you've got Cunha as well Cunha would be more reliably with Fulham there every season and his good season was Cunha Cunha had a great game at Fulham I'm sure he did maybe the season before he got the move to United or maybe the season before that no I think it was the season before he got the move to United because it was 24-25 he got about 20 goals yeah was one of them at Craven Cottage yeah again it's a bit guessy but no I'm sure I'm sure he had a absolute blinder of a game unless that's where he started a fight no that was Ipswich are you going to do a fighting yeah I'm happy to go with Kunja in the tradition of going for United related players on every guess I don't mind going for Kunja 24-25 are we happy?
1:19:35yeah let's go Mateus Kunja 2024-2025
1:19:39Charlie Eccleshare:Fulham 1 Wolves 4 Sure. God scores that day, João Gómez, Gonzalo Guedes, and at the double, Mateus Cunha. Lovely stuff. Very good. 14-8. Good work. Okay. We need maximum points. Yeah, we do. Question four, please, listeners. For question four, your nation is Spain. Fernando Torres. Fernando Torres, yeah. David Silva. Mata. Done. Diego Costa oh good shout oh yeah how many did he get quite a lot because he had two very good seasons he went in his first season yeah and then he got quite a lot in that in 16-17 didn't he not many Spaniards of course so we're looking at very latter years obviously the last 10 yeah at this point I'd say David Silva Costa Fernando Torres feels like a good not matter no I think Silva would have scored more than matter just by being around for longer have we missed anyone horrendous here Pedro very possibly Pedro Pedro's a good shout yeah but he wasn't there that long was he three seasons maybe yeah a few not enough not a plifth should we go for Torres Costa-Mata or just Torres and Costa we have to go for three points don't we we have to go for three you think Mata got more than David Silva no David Silva I think David Silva more alright okay okay we're going for Fernando Torres we're going for Diego Costa and we're going for David Silva oh it's all or nothing it really is it really is Some interesting deliberations that failed to mention a certain former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder.
1:21:14Young Cesc Fabregas, who was the fourth highest goalscorer in the Spaniard. That's why we didn't mention him. They were top three with 85, Fernando Torres. With 60, David Silva. And with 53, Diego Costa. Oh, yes. Three points.
1:21:30Charlie Eccleshare:We're alive. That's right, that's gone completely over my head. We've got three points. Fucking hell. Fucking hell. It's 14-11. wow huge moment I mean is this to win it? I mean they've got they've got plenty of margin for error yeah I think we go for three because I think I don't want to play it safe exactly don't be kind of remotely get to the corner for like some this isn't even a decision I don't even know why you're bothering to fuck around with what level you're going to choose it's level three who scored for Everton at the bet 365? Lukaku Lukaku 15-16 I think Oh, that's annoyingly confident.
1:22:07That sounds like knowledge.
1:22:10Charlie Eccleshare:When someone just says it really breezily, but I say, oh, someone's listening beneath me to say it. Pat's just got every former, current Manchester United player's CV. Yeah, he's that good at it. He can do it exclusively with United past and present. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's right. You came out with it so quickly, I don't even want to reason and argue anyone else. Okay, fuck it. Romelu Lukaku, 2015-16. Stoke 0, Everton 3 Goal scorers Aaron Lennon Seamus Coleman And from the penalty spot after 11 minutes Romello Lukaku Lovely stuff Imagine if we'd gone Seamus Coleman, that would have been showboating Let's complete formalities Yeah, let's definitely still do them Dead rubber Our fifth question please, listeners Okay, your final nation That we want the top three Premier League goal scorers for Is Ghana Asamoah Jeanne.
1:23:05Yeah. He had that one very good season. We're Christian Benteke, Kevin Gallagher and Shane long away from being in the mix. Yeah.
1:23:13Charlie Eccleshare:Wow. Jeanne, Essien, I guess. You've got Sully Mentari. The IU's, one of the IU's. Oh, my goodness. I think Jordan IU should be in there. Essien, not prolific. It's just high profile. No. Semenya. Kudus. Jeanne had that one really good season. Then didn't do much, did he? but Jordan Ayew feels right. Jordan Ayew's got the longevity. I reckon he must be in the top three. Semenya might get there by now. Yeah, maybe. Semenya, Ayew and Asamoah Jean? Well, it's academic, so let's just go for those three and see where we get to. Well, I don't think we're missing anyone. I mean, we may well be. We haven't thought about that hard, but that's fine.
1:23:52Charlie Eccleshare:But anyway, we're going to go for Asamoah Jean, we're going to go for Jordan Ayew and we're going to go for Antoine Semenya. Okay. The leading goal scorer for Ghana in the Premier League is Jordan Ayi, so that was correct. In second place, it's Antoine Semenya, so that's correct. The third player is someone you did forget, it's Tony Yeboah. Oh, no! 24 goals. The ultimate humiliation! So I'm afraid... That's awful. Zero points. What a way to go out. 17-11, and they have a question to go. I presume you're going to go for level three in Happy Hunter Grounds to make it 20. We very rarely have 20 in the Football Clichés quiz, and you're about to do it probably.
1:24:29Charlie Eccleshare:what level would you like in happy hunting grounds yeah it has to be three doesn't it really no fuck it give him a 10 they've won it already yeah yeah yeah uh yeah for the purposes of the spectacle and because i know pat noon craves it would you like a level 10 you get 10 points okay so we get 27 out of 25 if we if we get it right who has scored for blackburn at turf more um only one season oh nine ten yeah so i remember this game i think the i think franco de santo scored but I think that was that he would park for a 27-11 win fucking rugby score Charlie's loving this because he knows it's like it doesn't really count it's before Yacoubu, Santa Cruz and McCarthy or is it two?
1:25:17already left by then City in 09 David Dunn come back by this point yeah was he still around by then yeah because he he's in the Venkis advert David Dunn. Okay, which would have probably been even later than this, so yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I don't mind David Dunn. I just think, I think, I mean, I might be thinking too much into it, but if it's a level 10, I don't think it's going to be an obvious goal scorer. I think it's just because it only happened once, surely. Chris Samba possibly popped up a lot of goals. Yeah, goal scorers aren't really worked into the algorithm, I don't think. Oh, they're not?
1:25:47Okay. It's more about the frequency of the counter. Chris Samba, do you say it, Johnny? Yeah, because he pops up with a lot of goals. Ryan Nelson as well I don't know, I'll have to go with any of them if you guys want to I like Chris Samba that's unrelated to this question just by the by
1:26:07Charlie Eccleshare:what do you guys think of Chris Samba Chris Samba 0-9-10 Burnley 0-0 Blackburn 1 goal scorer after 20 minutes David Dunn I'm glad I'm so close to you. A local hero deciding the derby. If anything, it hasn't worked. It hasn't finished that well for you, to be honest. It's been a damn squib at the end. But no, the Clichés listeners have prevailed by quite the margin. 17 points to 11. We wanted to get to the final round with some sort of foothold. We failed to do that, and that's cost us. Brilliant work from you, Pat Noon, Johnny Sharples, and Sam Huxley. You are the first ever listeners champions of the Clichés quiz.
1:26:51Charlie Eccleshare:Pat, how do you feel? Yeah, delighted with that. I'm very happy with how it went. We were a bit worried when we were, whatever it was, 8-4 up at some point, at one point, or 8-1, I think it was. Must have been horrible. Absolutely horrible. A bit worried that we might have Brentford subbed it. Johnny, was that ever in doubt? Well, they say it's the most dangerous scoreline in quizzing, don't they? So I'm glad we prevailed in the end. But yeah, great selection of questions because we got lots of them right. Sam, a tremendous audio round. Thanks for bringing that to the table. We plucked a couple of genuine ones out of the air on that one.
1:27:27Charlie Eccleshare:It really gave us hope, but I think you had plenty left in the tank, didn't you? I've got to be honest, I got slightly worried when you plucked Joe Royal out of the air. I thought the tide might be turning. Joe Royal. I think our issue here, Dave and Charlie, was we focused so much on Pat Noon, especially on the Happy Underground. We had bloody Sam Huxley, who's also dominating the leaderboard in recent months. it's like worrying about Andy Cole and then not worrying about Dwight York alongside him well who's Johnny then in that analogy Solskjaer yeah it's Solskjaer he's very Solskjaer he's got some Solskjaer about him it's really good well that's worked out perfectly thanks to you Pat Noon Sam Huxley and Johnny Sharples congratulations I'm christening the three of you with no disrespect to eggheads nice oh it's finished lovely it's finished lovely thanks to you David Walker cheers thanks to you Charlie Eccleshare Thank you.
1:28:18Thanks, guys. Great questions.
1:28:19Charlie Eccleshare:Thanks to everyone for listening. We'll see you in a few weeks as well at the Clichés Quiz Live, which is now sold out, Colin told me mid-quiz. So that's exceptional work from everyone. Looking forward to that. And we'll see you on Tuesday for the next pod. Cheers.
