In short

The Football Daily episode is a World Cup 2026 roundup focused on “superstar” scoring and records, plus a behind-the-scenes look at England’s camp. Hosts Rick Edwards and Lloyd Griffith discuss Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria (Messi scoring twice), France’s 3-0 win over Iraq (France scoring twice by the end), and Norway’s 3-2 win over Senegal.

Key claims

Messi broke World Cup records (18 finals goals, 18 matches won, 2,489 minutes, most matches played) and Argentina’s five tournament goals have all been scored by him; Mbappé is on pace to overtake Messi’s tally; Haaland is a “goal-scoring machine,” with efficiency even when he has few first-half chances.

Notable examples

Messi missing a penalty but scoring later; France-Iraq match delayed 2 hours 10 minutes due to severe weather.

Guests

Julian Leran (Five Live EuroLeague reporter, in Philly for France vs Iraq, road trip with Pat Nevin as DJ). BBC Sports England reporter Kelly Summers (in England camp since start; interviews Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson; describes Tuchel’s intense-but-balanced atmosphere).

0:29Snapdragon. That's how. Formula One is all about precision, tiny margins, massive ambition, flat-out performance. And that's exactly why it's exciting to see Cadillac entering Formula One, bringing an American luxury brand with performance pedigree onto the biggest stage in motorsport. But this isn't just about the grid. That same racing mindset, the obsession with engineering, the pursuit of perfection, lives in the Cadillac V-Series lineup, giving you the chance to experience the precision and performance of the grid on the open road. Cadillac V-Series, distinctive luxury performance, engineered to thrill.

1:06Discover the V-Series line-up at cadillac.com. The Football Daily Podcast at the People World Cup 2026 with Rick Edwards and Lloyd Griffith. Hello, you're listening to the Football Daily with me, Rick Edwards. And me, Lloyd Griffith. Griffith. It's like hesitation. It's Griffith, isn't it? Sorry, I do get it wrong. It's Griffith, yeah. Griffith. Quick roundup of the scores for you. Argentina beat Austria 2-0. Guess who scored the goals? What? France, don't actually. France beat Iraq 3-0. Guess who scored two of the goals? Don't know. Okay. And Norway beat Senegal 3-2. Guess who scored two? Don't.

1:44We are recording before the late game, Jordan, Algeria, but all the scores and highlights will be available on the BBC Sport website and app. Now, you're probably wondering at home, And what level of comfort are these two at with each other now? You know, two weeks in, living together, working together. We'll put it this way. Without being asked, today I hung all of your pants out to dry that you'd left in the washing machine. But the really weird thing is I was fine with it. I just sort of saw them and I was like, oh, Lloyd's forgotten to hang these out. I'll do that for him. What's even weirder is I haven't done any washing today, so producer Lizzie, you happy with Rick Edwards touching your smalls?

2:24I mean, listen, they're not smalls. Well, they were mine. I wear skims exclusively. Other brands are available. Yeah. I did see that and it was very nice. Yeah, interesting. You did see it but you didn't say anything about it. You just took it as red. You're like, well, of course, he's like, my stuff out. I was like, oh, that's nice of him. Yeah. But internally? Yeah, but then I thought in my head, well, do you know what? When he's done his smalls, I'll pop him out to dry. Well, that's very kind. And I can tell I'm a friend. I dried Rick Edwards and I won't mention the brand but they're exactly what you'd think Rick Edwards would wear if you're thinking what kind of boxer trunk does Rick Edwards wear they are exactly what you're thinking and same for you actually your grandad's or wife rumps why are you laughing Lizzie here's a question for you so I went for lunch today a nice lunch in Brentwood.

3:28Clang? That was a long trip. And indirectly, which Hollywood star paid for my lunch? Were they there? They were not there, but the person I was having lunch with, they work for this person. Oh my God. Tell me Rick Edwards has not gone full LA without telling me Rick Edwards has gone full LA. Who do you reckon? Is this the second meeting with an agent this week? It wasn't an agent. Okay. That's the one who works at this individual's company. Right. Oh, right. Yeah. So you use the company. So not a footballer. Not a footballer. Okay. Right. Okay. So in Hollywood Star. Hollywood Star. Yeah. Bought me lunch.

4:07Bought me lunch. Indirectly. Okay. Got to emphasize indirectly. Tom Cruise. No. But, you know, it's not a million miles off that kind of level. Okay. Actor? Yeah. But actually sort of like triple threat, I'd say. Maybe even quadruple threat. I mean, the whole lot. Actor, concern, been to prison. Yeah, that's right. Okay. I'm going to say Jack Black? No, more impressive. More impressive. Looks much less like you. Looks less like me. Much. I mean, this guy. I'm not saying he's not the opposite. Oh, I've given you gender. He's not the opposite of you, but he's sort of, maybe he is. Will Smith. Much closer.

4:46Much closer. Jamie Foxx? Yes. What do I win? I don't know. Okay. I think I win because Jamie Foxx bought me lunch. Indirectly. Indirectly. And when he listens to this, and it is a win. And he will. And he will. He'll be like, I won't do the impact. I won't do the impact. I'm happy to do Scouts, but I won't do it. Please. I'll do it. He's from Texas. He's from Texas. He'll be like, y 'all, I can't believe you. I can't believe he got lunch off me. Is that all right? Where is Texas? Still in America, is it? Yeah. Okay. Okay. Should we talk about something else quickly? Okay. Yeah. Do you want to talk about the table tennis?

5:28Oh, yeah. We played table tennis today. We did play table tennis today. Rick Edwards. Yes. And he might ask for a veto here. I will ask for a veto, probably. Gas lit us all. I didn't gas lit. Basically going, oh, guys. I am bad at table tennis. There's this table outside, and there's these little bats, and there's these small little white balls. I think they call it Tablet Tenny. Does anyone want a game? And we're like, why are you being so weird about it? It's like, should we just play Tablet Tenny? And then me, producer Lizzie, and producer Jonathan from Five Live Breakfast, we played, and it became pretty apparent that you clearly have spent a lot of time in quite posh common rooms in either sixth forms or Oxbridge colleges playing table tennis and sharking people for money.

6:10I'm not good at table tennis. You're just worse. well actually you were mentally weak oh my gosh this is a weird angle to go down I was mentally strong physically weak you were taller and you had the wind in your favour and you should try that too we swapped ends no you were good I will beat you over time just how long are we here for I think we are going to play again one last bit of business and I realise we're not going to get all of this business in but still we just cut out the football Yeah exactly It's only half the title This is the daily What have we done today Also four amazing players Scored incredible goals And I've just realised it's three So I had a message from A guy called Dave On Instagram And he said I imagine that commissioners are queuing up For you both to present a number of shows And then he suggests the shows we could present and I just want a yes or no from you on each of them.

7:13Oh, I love this. First up, Grimsby Port with Rick and Lloyd. Yes. Oh, croaky. Britain's favourite bus route. Yes. It's the 3C. Yeah. And Cathedrals by Rail. I'm doing that on my own. Oh, what? I am not letting you in on that. You want company on the train. Yeah, if I'm doing it, I'm doing it with Michael Portillo. I've obviously taken him. Him trains me Cathedrals. I was about to say, I'm not sure which commissioner, but I think we all know it's Channel 5. So we were billing today as the day of the superstars, and it lived up to the hype. Messi, Mbappe and Haaland all scoring two in their games.

7:55So that's four for Mbappe so far, four for Haaland, five for Messi. None for Cristiano Ronaldo, but he hasn't played his second game yet. Let's bring in from Five Lives EuroLeague's Julian Leran. Hey, Julian, how are you doing?

8:08Julien Laurens:Hello, guys. I'm doing great. Thank you. And you? Yeah, pretty good. Where are you? So we were in Philly for the game between France and Iraq with all the weather, the bad weather, the interruption. So I was supposed to take the train back down, which was cancelled. So kindly, our Five Lives crew, so Pat Nevin, George Cummings, Ian Dennis, said, why don't you jump in with us? And we drive back. So we drove back from Philly. Road trip. The fun bus. That's good. Road trip. Pat Nevin was a DJ. His playlist is awesome. Of course, obviously. Yeah, and he was lovely. He was really nice. Who's designated driver there?

8:45Is it George?

8:46Julien Laurens:Yeah, George was. He drove really well. I did say, if you get tired, I can drive, you know, no problem. But he was perfect. Do I trust the French driving? Not sure. It's the same side of the road. True, actually. You shouldn't. Yeah.

9:02Let's talk about Lionel Messi then. Still breaking records. So today, these are the world records he broke. Most World Cup finals goals ever, 18. Most World Cup matches played by an individual. Most matches won by a player at a World Cup, 18. Most minutes played in the World Cup, 2 ,489. Like, I don't even know where, I don't know what to say anymore about the guy. It kind of defies explanation, doesn't it?

9:32Julien Laurens:Yeah, completely. And when you think that some of the World Cups that he played, and that's his sixth World Cup, obviously, some were not even a great success. You know, OK, 2014, they went all the way to the final and they lost to Germany. 2022, of course, they won it. But 2018, they lost to France in the last 16 and to Kylian. 2006, 2010, all those competitions. So it could have been even better had they reached later stages in the competition. I just think that it's a day short now of his 39th birthday to see him still perform like this in a team that obviously plays for him, is built for him, around him.

10:08Julien Laurens:It's still great. And to even see him scoring late in games after 90 minutes like he did today again against Austria, it's credit to his fitness, the longevity, the mentality that he has. It's just, I think we're sure all superlative. But I think if there was any doubt for some people that he was not the greatest of all time, more than Cristiano or Maradona or Pele, I think so far what he's done, even if he's just Austria and Algeria is showing for me that he's the greatest of all time. The mad thing is that he was going to retire from international football like 10 years ago. That was the chat.

10:43And you think, well, I'm glad you didn't, mate. You've still got something to offer.

10:46Julien Laurens:I don't really believe that. And there's retirement for your age and when you feel like, OK, I've done it all now and I can go and this probably will happen after this World Cup. But the times before where he did retire and said like, I've had enough is because things were not working for him with Argentina, the pressure back home, all the expectations. People are saying, hang on, why are you so good with Barcelona and not good enough for us? Why can't you carry our team back to another World Cup? Since then, they didn't want a World Cup since 1986 and Maradona. So I think all of that was like, this is too much.

11:18Julien Laurens:I can't take all of this anymore. So let me walk away now. And you're right, it's great that he changed his mind or whoever changed his mind those couple of times where he retired before really having the edge of retiring. And now it's just pure pleasure. And the pressure is off because he won the World Cup in 2022, which was the holy grail. So now it's a bit more like, hey, let's just enjoy those last moments, the last dance. He missed a penalty early doors. He did miss a penalty. And he's just sort of, well, you forgive him really, don't you? You kind of go, oh, well, he's going to score anyway.

11:48Yeah. It doesn't matter. And he was obviously gutted. What I love though, Jules, was when he did score. It was quite a bad penalty. Do you know what was really nice? If I'm going to nitpick. Do you know what was really nice? just watching Lionel Messi, miss a penalty and going, oh, I can actually do that. I can actually do what Messi's done. I can miss a penalty. I mean, maybe not on the world stage. But then he obviously scored a little bit later. What I loved, what I really loved is how much it meant to the whole team. And we've talked so many times this tournament about how in these teams you've got players that, are they individuals?

12:21Are they team players? Clearly in the Argentinian team, he loves those players and those players love him. And you could see when he celebrated, how much it meant, not just to him, but to the whole of the team.

12:33Julien Laurens:I think it's brilliant. There's this lovely story, I mean, lovely story, in a way that shows you the status. The Argentines are two per rooms in their base camp, except Messi. Messi's the only one to have his own room, just for him. He doesn't share with anybody. This is who he is. And you've seen all those footage of the rest of the squad waiting for him at the end of the tunnel until he's there. And only once he's there, then he starts walking out and everybody follows behind and it's just it's just like that I think this is a team where they all play for him and he's he's the main guy but he loves those guys who are there for him all the time and stuff Argentina has scored five goals in this tournament and Messi scored all of them that kind of tells you everything you need to know and they're not playing great you know as well that's the other thing they're not playing great today was not a great performance collectively no and it just kind of doesn't really matter when you've got that little man the great thing about this tournament is we're seeing loads of goals we're seeing big performances from big players and although these players, Messi, Haaland and Mbappe they are playing for their teams you get the sense that they do they are aware of what the others are doing because of course they are and so when Messi goes and scores two goals Mbappe then comes out and scores two goals and then Haaland comes out and scores two goals it's like they are having their own personal competition as well.

13:56And I like it.

13:58Julien Laurens:I think it's amazing. It's amazing for us. I think it's great for the World Cup because like we said, that stage belongs usually to the best, to the greatest. Mbappe today, we saw him after the game and he said, there's no race, no saga between me and Leo. And I'm not looking at what he does, which is not really true because as we know, they all check on, okay, where is who? The aim for everybody is to win the World Cup. But if you can win the Golden Boots as well, trust me, those guys with huge drive and ambition who are there for that and break records and be the best, they will take that as well.

14:34Mbappe, so he equalled the closest record today and he's got so much time left. That's the thing. It feels inevitable, maybe not at this tournament, but in a future tournament, he will overtake Messi's goal tally.

14:50Julien Laurens:Yeah, I think so. And I think the thing for him is he scored 16 goals in 16 games in the three World Cups that he took part of. He took closer 24 games to get to 16. And Messi's on 28, as you mentioned, Rick, at the start. 28 to get to 18. Kylian is 16 and 16. It's a goal per game ratio, which is incredible, really, at that stage. And you're right, he's 27. He will turn 28 in December. So there's another World Cup for sure. would be 32 unless he's injured and maybe even another one. So more games, probably more goals to score. And it's just, again, I think his drive and ambition to go and make sure that he gets this record to a level that nobody else could reach.

15:32And also as well, Laminya Miles scored yesterday. If he scores two or three more this tournament, you kind of look at him and go, well, actually, he's got four or five in him. Is he going to even overtake Mbappe when he overtakes Lionel Messi. So I think just as a football fan, you've just got to go, what an era we're living in. What a tournament, what an era and just embrace it. I mean, I'm absolutely buzzing. It's incredible.

15:56Julien Laurens:And the thing is, you can look at Haaland, but you also need to go far in those tournaments. You know, Kylian is there because there's two finals in the two World Cups he played. And Lamine probably has that as well potential with Spain to go really far in the four, five or six World Cups he's going to play now. For Haaland, let's see. You know, Nowhere might do well, but you really need to get those games going to be able to get to 25 or 20, even 20 goals or whatever the record would be at some point. I like the fact that the rest of the world are kind of familiarising themselves now with Erling Haaland in quite a funny way.

16:33I think we've become slightly just like used to him. Like we know that he's just this kind of colossus, this machine, this goal scoring machine. and there's all these memes that are basically doing the rounds and people being like, there is nothing scarier than this man running after you. And it is really funny because it's making me see him through fresh eyes again. Yeah, he is terrifying. He doesn't stop scoring goals. He doesn't stop scoring goals. And basically, if he's playing, he will score. It's kind of that simple with him.

17:14Julien Laurens:Yeah, in the first half he didn't have a single shot didn't he today? And I think you think okay, maybe it's just enough there for him. It's just not happening. Like we saw, for example, when they played Morocco in the friendly before the World Cup where he had like four touches in 17 minutes and never looked like scoring. And today it was a bit like that in that first half. And yet two goals, bam, bam, back to... It's just like that. You're right. How efficient he is, how clinical he is. it's just a monster and you're right because some people in the world only watch the World Cup every four years and that's it they're not watching the Premier League like us they're not daily on the football thing for them it'd be like who's this giant long blonde hair Viking there ok it's him and then yeah you discover him like that you mentioned Mbappe's goal a game ratio in the World Cup now that is good but he's no Denis Undar Rick loves Undaff I do I just think do you know his stats he scored three goals do you know what his goals per minute is 11 no he's not quite that good it's a goal every 19 minutes that's pretty decent Killian's taken 19 yeah pathetic no Undaff pathetic and you know you know when his birthday is no on July 19th the day of the final if that's not a good home then he's under scores a hat trick on his birthday in the World Cup final.

18:40Julien Laurens:Can you imagine? We kind of assumed, and correctly, that today was going to be dominated by the superstars of world football. It was also slightly dominated by the weather. Now, you were there, and I've never... Well, I've seen stuff interrupted for weather before. I don't think I've ever seen it interrupted for two hours and ten minutes. That's crazy. Me neither. And I was there in 2012 when France played Ukraine in the Donbass Arena in the Euros 2012 and where the rain was crazy they started the game somehow but five minutes then it was stopped for an hour then they finished the game on what was a waterlogged pitch but you know but that was a lot of rain today was something else man I have to say all day long we've had warnings about the thunderstorms are coming and at some point the game could be stopped but until it's there until you are told you need to go to Shelton because this is dangerous you don't really It's not that you don't believe, but you want to see it.

19:39And that first half happened.

19:41Julien Laurens:We even thought with Deno on commentary and pad that it was brightening up on the right side of the stadium. And actually, the next thing we know is like, you need to evacuate, go somewhere safe inside. So now here we are filling the air with Crossman for two hours. I mean, we did a bit of politics, obviously, first. Not us, but the professionals. And then we talked about, okay, why is it to be in that kind of position? But two hours is a long time, even for the players. you know and Deschamps was saying after the game we played cards we had a chat but then every 20 minutes they said yeah yeah you're going to be back soon and then it was pushed backwards again and again and again and it can't be it can't be easy really so credit to the players to still maintain a really good level in that second half I think France played even better in the second half after the break but for us it was quite unreal of like okay when are we back on on this game is the game maybe even be allowed to finish tonight I mean it was yeah it was a real shift I I was listening to some of the Five Live filling, and it was, I felt sorry for you guys, but I was also laughing, because there was a point where Stephen Warnock was just kind of listing slow-release energy foods.

20:52I was like, yeah, listen, whatever it takes. Also, Sparathor for Keir Starmer, who listened in to listen to the football, they're like, oh God, they're talking about me again. Leave it alone. I also thought about Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alexei Larlas. Have you been following this, Jules? Yeah, I love it. It's incredible. There's a bit of friction there. And the thought of those three having to hold for two hours, ten minutes. Wow. I mean, Larlas has done well to get out without getting sort of roundhoused by Zlatan. I haven't seen this but apparently there's a video of our commentary team doing the Macarena were you getting involved with that?

21:37were you leading it?

21:39Julien Laurens:I was filming it I kind of encouraged him to do it a bit to be fair yeah of course but yeah because what happened was the players were warming up for the second time to start that second half the I don't know the music guy in the stadium putting all those bangers as you can imagine like Living on a Prayer and Macarena and 500 Miles or whatever and people you could see on the big screen people were singing and then Stephen Warnock was on fire and we were like okay Dano revealed why his karaoke song would be which was Deacon and something and it was just like it was freestyling it was all over the place it was just like we'd lost it by then yeah of course yeah you don't need to make excuses I need to see this video.

22:28Yeah, I'm going to let you go to bed and chat to you soon. Thank you, mate. Cheers, Jules.

23:54It is a meeting of the nations and of people who love football. The People World Cup 2026. Listen on BBC Sounds. The Football Day at the People World Cup 2026. With Rick Edwards and Lloyd Griffith. Live from LA. So England are playing later today. They take on Ghana in their second game of the groups. Build up from 8 o 'clock on 5 Live. Kick-off is 9pm. BBC Sports England reporter Kelly Summers joins us now. Hey Kelly, how are you doing? I'm giddy, Brick. I'm actually so excited. It's so nice to be going into an England game with all this enthusiasm and excitement. So, yeah, I'm really looking forward to it.

24:32I honestly thought that you were going to say you were giddy about appearing on our podcast. I was like, oh, that's nice. So did I. That's lovely to say. So did I. I did send Lloyd a message the other day and say I've been an avid listener. You did, yeah. I don't think I said I was giddy, but... You did. You said you were very complimentary, and I was like, well, let's get you on, and here you are. And I'm giddy that you're on the show. Oh, we're both giddy. Both very good. Very good. Thank you. I think I said I really enjoyed Producer Lizzie's, the impression you do of Producer Lizzie, which got me in a bit of trouble.

24:59Yeah, I've had a few emails from HR, so I've had to stop doing that. Do you want to do one more? I think if you improve it, it'll probably be okay. Do one more. Hello, my name's Lizzie and I'm from Liverpool. She's not happy. That wasn't so good. That sounded a bit manly. A bit manly. Do a lady one. Yeah, right there. My name's Lizzie. I'm from Liverpool. I love Salah. I always will do. Right, let's crack on with England stuff, please. No, do another couple of lies. No, Rick, come on. All right. Kelly, you've been in the camp since the start of the tournament. It's a bit of a cliche, but I feel like I have to ask what the mood is like there because it does feel different to normal England camps.

25:37Do you know what? I said it was a bit risky saying it ahead of the first game. I stood pitch club with Paul Robinson the day before they played Croatia and we both said, it just feels a bit different. And Sammy Mockbell, who's also been in camp as well for the BBC, we're all kind of whispering it because we've been here before And obviously we spoke a lot, didn't we, about Gareth Southgate changing the culture. But this time I can't quite put my finger on it. I've been thinking about it a lot. I think it's the atmosphere that Thomas Tuchel's created. It goes back to if you think about the treatment of Jude Bellingham, like he's kind of shown him as the over recent months.

26:09He said, we need you, Jude, but we can do it without you. And it's it's not about individuals now. And it just feels like that's really brought everyone together. I know that's so cliched as well. But I've interviewed Kobi Mainu, who hasn't started. we're not talking about him as a starter but he seemed as happy as Declan Rice if you know I mean it just feels I don't know if you've seen some of the stuff they've been up to this week they went to the baseball Dan Byrne and Harry Kane went country dancing but then we see them out of training the other day and it's so unbelievably intense it just feels like he's he's got that balance right and they're all just having a great time I wish I had some well I don't wish I had some kind of bad news but it really is as good as it seems from the outside from what I've seen anyway.

26:48It's that thing isn't it you just said balance where you know that he's a bit of a disciplinarian and we've heard you know. Oh don't cross him. Jed Spence and Ollie Watkins talk about the fact they'll shout at them and he's obviously very happy to do that but somehow he's doing that whilst also keeping everyone on side. I think what the players said about his half time speech as well I think that's been quite interesting. It was almost like they were all shocked like they all play for top managers they've played for a top manager in Gareth Southgate who's taken them to finals but it's like He's got an aura.

27:18That's what I think it is. Like he has this presence. When I posted on my Instagram earlier, when Thomas Tuchel speaks, you listen. Because he's got a brilliant way with words, which, by the way, is no mean feat in his second language. And I think at the moment, he's just got those players eating out the palm of his hand, which obviously is easy to do when they've got and had a second half performance after his team talk. So, yeah, I can't, as you can tell, speak highly enough. But as we know with England, it can change very quickly. Have you seen a meet quite strict in and around the camp or at training?

27:49We get to see 15 minutes of training every few days. And it was so they were given Thursday and Friday. We weren't allowed in Thursday and Friday. I think they had some downtime Friday and Saturday we went into training. And normally you kind of need your binoculars because they train so far away. They trained right in front of us and it was properly set up, mannequins and everything. And all of his coaching staff were there. He was there on the halfway line as well. And they were barking orders. things like we play as we train we train as we play don't let the intensity drop that's where that jed spence clip comes from that you might have seen doing the rounds on social media i think five live actually put out where someone like he wasn't afraid in front of the media of saying jed you need to keep up with it and jed spence said after oh he's done that to all of us he kept saying wake up didn't he like wake up jed wake up something yeah it wasn't the most complimentary but he did that in front of us and i felt like that was a bit of a statement as well that was him saying yeah yeah we do the fun stuff but we do the hard stuff as well who have you been speaking to in the last few days from the team oh do you know i've had a really good few days of interviews no offense not that i'm saying that there's bad interviews in the squad uh declan rice on saturday and elliot anderson on sunday and i mean in terms of two influential players for england but don't really get much better do they declan says he's fit i'm still not totally convinced but he was charismatic as ever and elliot anderson's just incredibly humble and doesn't seem to realize quite how good he is when you say fit is it the sunburn or something more serious than that well no he didn't mention the sunburn until the end of the interview and then he stopped and went and i'm now killing him by revealing it he stopped and lifted his t-shirt up and went i'm really glad you didn't notice look it's got me again the sunburn it's got me again and i was like unfortunately i'm going to broadcast that somewhere deck so everyone's going to know and what's this about declan rice and his slippers he came into the interview and he didn't have shoes on and was like am i feet in this and we were like yeah i still don't understand why he didn't have shoes i think maybe he left them outside or something so we put hotel slippers on and then he was like oh they're incredibly comfy and i was like but also why have you got your hotel slippers here well maybe maybe his normal slippers were stolen in that um hall a few weeks back and the only thing that wasn't returned yeah it's monogram slippers the rest of the england players colby mayner and elliot anderson both had these other shoes on that look like kind of like space boots and I've said to both of them, what are they?

30:05And they're like, oh, they're these incredible recovery boots. So then you have Declan Rice coming in with that in your shoes. I don't know what's going on with the footwear department. No idea. But also, yeah, I'm the same as you. I've got a lot of questions. So if you are travelling with a pair of hotel slippers, why are you not wearing them? Because you don't want to ruin them. Oh, you don't want dirty hotel slippers. I'll give you that. Maybe they weren't his slippers. I don't know. He was just given a pair of slippers. Sorry, are you accusing Declan Rice of stealing someone else's slippers now?

30:34That is controversial, Kelly. And we will leave it there. We were hoping for an exclusive and we've got one. We don't know who's starting, but we know who's a thief.

30:46He's also been speaking glowingly about playing with Harry Kane and what a privilege it is and sort of excited to tell his kids about it. If you're an England player and you're playing with Harry Kane, if you're any footballer, is there anyone better, really? I mean, yes, Messi. there's few better players to play with than Harry Kane and if you're Declan Rice the set piece king as he actually spoke to me about the other day and you've got Harry Kane you know you're going to get loads of assists because you can put the corner in as he showed and he's going to score I think Harry Kane I've noticed a real difference in Harry Kane as well firstly he's incredibly tanned and let's be honest everyone looks better when they've got a tan and he's obviously come into this tournament off the best season ever and he just the way he walked around the interview zone post-match the other day he's got that aura where you go oh Harry you're amazing because he is.

31:33So yeah, I think I'd want to play with him. How is Harry Kane day-to-day? Because obviously we've been talking a lot about the superstars of this tournament. Everyone is scoring. Your Mbappes, your Lionel Messi's, your Haaland's. And there's a lot of hype around Harry Kane, but it seems that he's kind of going a little bit, obviously he scored twice in the day, but it seems like he's going a little bit under the radar. How is he day-to-day? Is he coping well or is he excited? He hasn't come in and done a press conference or a sit down with us yet, But the one thing I'd say with Harry, and this is my fourth major tournament with England, he never really changes.

32:04And I think that's almost his biggest superpower because he doesn't seem to get too high. He doesn't seem to get too low. And he came out and as he was, I did him in the, obviously the game wasn't on the BBC the other day, but we did still interview him. And as he came out, Kelly Howell, you haven't seen you for a while. Like the usual small talk. And then he just, I was like, oh gosh, you've just scored two goals and been amazing. He just goes, so was the game on BBC tonight? and it's just like he's just he's just scored two goals for England and he just takes everything in his stride and I think that's why he's so impressive you never really know how Harry Kane is the only time I've ever really seen him switch obviously looks disappointed when we lost finals but I interviewed him straight after he missed the penalty in 2022 in the quarterfinal in Qatar and that was the first time where you're like oh my gosh this poor guy's crushed understandably so but yeah he's he's unflappable and what about Elliot Anderson I feel like I don't know that much about him as a as a character he kind of goes about his business quite quietly he's just he feels so young I know that's so silly because compared to I'm gonna put us all in the same bracket here guys sorry compared to all of us they they are young now like footballers feel like they're getting younger as we're getting older but he he's a man of few words but like I said to him I said did you notice the other day that all of the midfield came off apart from you I think that shows how important you are to England he was like oh yeah I don't really thought about that like yes I suppose so like he just he just feels like a kid that loves football incredibly level-headed just had an amazing rise obviously he's had a difficult few months as well off the pitch too but what a footballer how lucky we are to have him and there's loads of noise around him as well and he doesn't even seem to be that phased by by that yeah we're very lucky I think have you either of you seen Steven Gerrard doing his uh England 11 one of the other broadcasters just going through.

33:50Okay, Pickford and then Konza, Gooey and everyone's like, sorry, who? Gooey. I thought you'd got it wrong then. So I'm like, it's awkward. Yeah, calls him Gooey. Gooey. I don't know how he's, I don't know how he's got there really. It might be a nickname. He knows it. Is it the Scouse accent? Can you ask Lizzie if that's the Scouse accent? Producer Lizzie, no, she's saying, she seems angry actually. Say gooey in a Scouse accent. Gooey? Yeah. Hey, I'm going with gooey. Oh, you have seen it. I haven't seen it. It's excellent. Look for it. Well, Kelly, we're going to let you go to bed now because it is quite literally past your bedtime, isn't it?

34:33It literally is. And I feel like I've been a bit delirious in that interview. I'm normally meant to be a serious journalist. I end up talking about players' footwear. Kelly, you listen to this podcast. We will draw that stuff out of you. You listen to this podcast. You know it's not serious. We literally target the delirious.
