In short
The BBC Football Daily team’s behind-the-scenes recap of the 2026 World Cup final (“Argentina nil” vs Spain), focusing more on the matchday experience and surrounding spectacle than the football itself.
Guests (and backgrounds)
Kelly Cates, a BBC football presenter who worked the final; Joe Hart, former England goalkeeper and football pundit (appears as “man from Del Monte”); Micah Richards, former England defender and pundit; Wayne Rooney, former England captain (discussed via a “row”/rowing challenge). Also mentioned: Gabby Logan (BBC presenter) and producer Lizzie.
Key claims
The game was “dull” and Spain’s win was deserved; Spain limited Argentina to almost nothing (no shots on target until very late). Madonna’s halftime show was confusing/bizarre and widely criticized, though the stadium atmosphere was fun.
Notable examples
MetLife Stadium queues and infrastructure; Secret Service signage; Spain’s composure and Rodri’s tournament form; Enzo Fernández’s two yellow cards (including a diving first); Ferran Torres scoring after a Williams setup; trophy ceremony with Trump staying off-center and Infantino “lurking.”

The Football Daily Podcast at the People World Cup 2026 with Rick Edwards and Lloyd Griffith. Hello and welcome to the Football Daily with me, Rick Edwards. And me, Lloyd Griffith.
1:22Griffith. Oh, yeah. Can we just mention why I'm saying Griffith? Yeah. Obviously, the games happened. There was a montage at the end of BBC. Yeah. Where we all got credited. Yeah. But they called me Lloyd Griffiths. Yeah, because I told them to. No, you didn't. I said that was your name. If you did. They're like, who's the guy that you did a podcast with? Oh, they did not say that. And I said, it's Lloyd Griffiths. How dare they? I don't believe you. It's true. Me, Lloyd Griffiths. We've just got back from the MetLife Stadium, where the World Cup final finished. Football won Argentina nil. Ooh.
1:52Yeah, that's right. Ooh. I feel a little bit cheeky. You didn't see that. Producer Lizzie's face, who is an Argentina fan, she was scathing. Yeah, well. Or should I say, scathing? You should say that, yeah. A lot of people, I think, were questioning whether at this age, on the world's biggest stage, it would be possible to perform at the highest level. But it turns out Madonna has still got it. Badumtish. Thank you. There you go. There we go. It's good stuff. We actually workshopped that joke, didn't we? It took a lot longer than you'd have thought. Well, we knew there was a joke, and then eventually we churned it out.
2:29We thought of it before the game as well. Yeah, we did. Well, it depends on what Messi does. The framing of it depends on what Messi does, and in the end, he did absolutely nothing. Madonna did a lot more than him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Even though she was only singing, we'll come on to the halftime show, obviously, only singing in the stadium, and she barely stepped into the stadium for about ten seconds. It was like seven seconds. It was like a Dracula, not allowed to see light. I must get back in. the whole time when she's on the Jeep or whatever it was, just thinking where is she? Where is this supposed to be?
3:01In the bowels of the stadium. Are they driving around the car park? Why does it look like this? It's like a spinal tap. It was really bizarre. But we'll get on to that later. We will. So we're going to be joined by a few of our colleagues as we do the podcast because, and this is, oh I'll let you know why that is. We are sat outside the bar that we have been coming to and where recorded the podcast called Buddies. Buddies, yeah, Buddies. And because everyone except us, mainly me actually, has finished their work on the World Cup. You sound like you're going to cry then. Well, I've got to do breakfast after this between 1 and 4 a.m., Lloyd.
3:37And everyone else is having a drink in there to celebrate finishing. Well, they've just finished. And we're sat outside on the pavement sort of like beggars. I feel like, who's like on a Christmas carol when I'm banging on the window going, please Paul Robinson come and talk to me it was so funny because we're set up outside and a few people have just been in and said hello and have gone off and Gabby Logan just walked past and I was like Gabby oh my god hi how are you doing I was like yeah good she went what are you doing she's got to work on the pavement on the pavement Gabby we don't all have the luxury of studios but I absolutely love Gabby of course we love Gabby and we asked her she'd come on and she said no go for a nice dinner It's a wedding anniversary, so feel free.
4:21Yes, it is. Listen, going to a World Cup final was unbelievable. It was so good. There's actually quite a lot I think we need to discuss before we even get to the football. I don't think we're going to spend that much time talking about the actual football. No, because the actual football wasn't great. But the experience was brilliant. If you want to hear all of the post-match reaction, hello, robot. There's a robot. There's a robot. No, that's not Kelly Summers. That is a robot. That is a robot. And that is Kelly. I mean, it's all kicking off. Yeah. You shouldn't get them confused. Casey, don't stand in the way, mate.
4:56The poor girl won't know what she's doing. Go on. If you do want all of the post-match reaction, you can get that on the Football Daily feed. We're not going to do tons of it. No, I mean. Because, you know, the game was, it wasn't a great game. The number one ranked team in the world had zero shots on target. Hang on, Argentina aren't the number one ranked team in the world, are they? Well, they were before tonight. Were they? Not Spain? No. That's nuts. That's silly. Have you only realised that? I just assumed it was always Spain. No, it's Argentina. Well, also, I've seen Argentina play. Yeah.
5:26And they're not very good at football. They're not very good. So we're going to talk about a lot of the stuff that surrounded it. Yeah, so first of all, getting there, which we knew was going to be a bit of a mission. We just got a cab, and then we're just in gridlock traffic. Yeah. I think that's the expression here. And so we just got out. A lot of people were getting out and started walking. and it's a horrible bit actually where everyone's walking the road because there's no pavement at the side. It's just grass verge and then some cars are coming through and so they're beeping and then the people, the marshals are like, get off the road.
6:00It was chaos. It was chaos and it kind of made me really appreciate the infrastructure. The infrastructure in the UK? Thank you. The infrastructure around the stadia. We talked a lot about the infrastructure of the UK around stadia. Apart from MK Dons and Colchester, I think. You mentioned them actually. he gave them a kick in I really don't like going to those stadiums sorry we've been to a number of stadiums now obviously I went to Miami none of them have been easy to get to like none of them have been easy to get to in the middle of nowhere even when you get to where what is quite clearly a route towards a stadium there's still no signage we had to ask about 4 or 5 people we had to walk through this doesn't feel right we walked through the main building of a racetrack that was ridiculous that felt a bit like the foyer of a cinema.
6:46Yeah, it was really odd. And then walk all the way around the racetrack before eventually getting to the stadium. So we got to the stadium, and then on the way to the stadium, what was quite fun, we saw Trump's chopper. Yes, we did. Yeah, helicopter. Marine. Marine one. Marine one, yeah. I tried checking on the flight rate at 24. You did. Call sign was off. I mean, I'm assuming for security reasons. Don't they always say they call sign off? Not always. Is it not a security thing? No, mate, not always. and then as we're as we're approaching we knew we're in roughly the right place because Chris Martin walked past us Chris Martin just walked Chris Martin from Coldplay who's obviously curating the half time show we were like is Chris Martin there and you went I know him yeah and I said go and say hello yeah and I said not I don't think that will but we did have a sort of you know the awkward thing where I've definitely met him we definitely had that like thing of am I saying hello no I'm not saying hello I met him I met him in 2004 yeah you could have mentioned that but he wouldn't have known because I was I was a choir boy.
7:43Yeah, okay. Well, you gave me some advice on my tuning. I was fine. Which I did not enjoy. Quite huge queues getting into the stadium. We saw a lot of reports, hour to hour, because obviously the president was going to be there. And so they deployed the Secret Service to do checks around the stadium. What I love most about the Secret Service, massive signs on all their uniforms saying Secret Service. Yeah, and everyone was like,
8:12I think you've let the cat out of the bag I don't think you're that secret mate it was absolutely ridiculous but I love all that kind of stuff so I was really giddy you wanted to get a photo of them and I was thinking I don't know it's a great idea I waited until they turned their backs and I was like there we go I'll put that on Twitter tomorrow but the stadium itself the stadium itself is it's a classic stadium but about three times the size like it's not it doesn't have any interesting like design features like some of the other It doesn't have, I would say, the sort of wow factor of the one in Los Angeles.
8:44You look at the kind of design of the one in. Externally, not at all. Externally, it's quite ugly. Then you go in and it is just a huge bowl. It's a bowl. But it is so big. It's so big. Honestly, I... And full of Argentiniers. We walked in together and I became a little bit obsessed with the World Cup in 1994 and a lot of these huge bowl-esque stadiums. And the stadium that used to be there, the giant stadium where Ireland played in 1994 and got a few decent results in it. Ray Houghton. Ray Houghton, yes. And I just remember that was the World Cup that kick-started my love of tournament football.
9:15So to go to the stadium that obviously has replaced it, but it's still in that bowl shape. I was so excited. You were giddy. You took a little video of me. Like I was a kid that had never been to a stadium before. Yeah, it did feel like that. Oh, it was brilliant. And it was just, I haven't been in a bowl-esque stadium like that. Honestly, I was... You were beside yourself and it was very sweet. I was, and do you know what? I cried at Hamnet the other day on the plane. I nearly got teary, you know, just thinking back to 94 and thinking, oh my God, man, this is amazing. So, oh, yeah, I did choke up a little bit.
9:50And then when we found our seats and the seats were really good. Yeah. I mean, really good. Like very, very close to the pitch, but not so close that you can't sort of properly see it. Like ideal. Like it was just, you see whites of eyes. and we're surrounded pretty much by Argentina fans although you had a couple of Spaniards two Spaniards to my right to your right who were very quiet yeah they were extremely quiet because it was just a sea of Argentina and the two Argentiniards to my left were quite I'd say ultra-esque yes they were quite vociferous guys earlier on before the game actually literally as the game was kicking off the two girls and they were like five or six maybe who was staying directly in front of Lloyd, sort of on the seat.
10:35So it wasn't really pretty, you still see. But one of them had an Argentina flag, a small Argentina flag, and was waving it like this. But what she was doing was just whipping Lloyd in the face. Whipping me in the nose. It was like 33 degrees. My honker was already like red. I was like, I was like, and then I almost at one point had to close my eyes, go into the flag. So she realised that she'd made contact with me, then turned around and went, oh, I went, oh, crikey. oh I was like oh don't worry about it it was a lovely moment for me actually I really I thoroughly enjoyed the whole episode I'm like not as tall as you you should have just no I would have been getting in the chest well we will talk about the football a little bit and we're going to do it with the man from Del Monte Joe Hart who to be fair should have said no this is an immaculate suit no the annoying thing is you look good well cut final gentleman yeah that's an occasion I've not been to many of them I dress like a deck chair and Rick clearly got his luggage stolen at the airport.
11:34Did you get this pressed specially? How did you get this shipped out and looking so nice? This was just hung for a long time and then gambled today. I thought about ironing the shirt, but I didn't because I knew I wasn't taking this off. Yeah, you're all right, you're all right. Also as well, can I say... And the tie was pre-tied from the shop. Was it actually... Yeah, that was just loosened over the head and then sharpened up. Hang on, that's... What? You're not... You're not... Come on. Not like that. No, yeah. He said a double Windsor. I was like, a double Windsor. I can't do a double Windsor.
11:59I have no idea. I could just do what I did from school. You look absolutely sensational. What I will say is today was unbelievably hot. Were you not absolutely boiling? We were in the shade. Were you? We were in the shade, yeah. We were in a really good position, actually. We were in the beating sun and nearly had to ask a little Spanish lady if we could borrow her suntan lotion. Honestly. Didn't quite come to that. We were 12 rows in. It was fantastic seats, but awful for my nose. It was open there. The game was, look, the game wasn't great. It was by no means the best game of the World Cup. I feel like in the end most people would think the right result I think outside of Argentina I think everyone's celebrating that I'll be honest I was pro-Argentina before the game the way they had their game plan they're the only team who could disrupt Spain because once Spain got over that French hurdle who I thought were nailed on for the tournament I thought the only way you can get to them is by behaving like they behaved they probably went a little bit too far the referee had a massive call to make early on with a McAllister tackle The moment he didn't book from there...
13:00Got that wrong, didn't he? I knew how it was going to play out. We've seen it time and time again. We really have. But fair play to Spain. They're brilliant. They are absolutely brilliant. And unruffled as well. Unruffled. Kept to their game plan. It's just embedded in them to play that way. They didn't give Lionel Messi a sniff until the last couple of minutes. It was inevitable in those sorts of moments. But fantastic. The best team won the World Cup. And that's a really nice feeling. It was annoying watching that game going, oh, that's all we have to do. just keep the ball it's not that easy it's honestly not that easy and the way they did it under that pressure every single one of them like I say it's embedded them ingrained in them all the subs that came on it was just so fluid they were so composed not once were they ruffled not once were they rattled I think even Unai Simon the way that he played from a goalkeeping point of view to many people I think he had one save to make just the way that he linked everyone and kept everyone calm it was a flawless performance and there was a couple of moments right at the very end there was that one that dropped to Simeone you thought, if that drops to Messi that's probably a goal so I don't know if it's a big chance, probably half a chance but apart from that, I mean they just created nothing Argentina they couldn't lay a glove on them no matter what they tried obviously they were bending the rules but they just couldn't play anything, I don't think they had a shot until the 117th minute I think previously Gabby was saying that no one's not had a shot in the first 70 minutes on target of a World Cup final previously, a World Cup game it might even have been.
14:31But that just, you know, credit to Spain. I think it's one of those days you've got to credit the best team in the world. Did Argentina get it wrong? Could they have done something different? I suppose arguably, but could they have played them at football? Could they have backed their team to play that way? They've set themselves up to be this team. The way Scaloni's taken over and the way he interviewed before the game and talked about the process. It was around Lionel Messi and it was around one man and Spain weren't like that. You know, you didn't feel like one man was going to change the game.
15:02Their team was going to change the game. So credit to Argentina for doing what they've done. Obviously, two Copa Americas and a previous World Cup, but it just proved to be one step too far to an excellent team. They do have an absolute superstar, Spain, in Laminya Mal, who again, there was a few little flashes, but didn't do anything major and they don't need him to. Do you know what I loved about him today? They were after him. They were after him hard. They were physical. They were aggressive. They left it on him. And not only did he not bite but he stood up for himself. I thought he stood up for himself as a footballer and as a person.
15:41He didn't let any of it rattle him. Every now and again he puffed his chest out but he never nibbled. He kept calm. He realised he wasn't going to play a major role in the game. He realised that he wasn't going to be able to take on the whole Argentinian team. So he played as a team player. He knew he was going to have his moment. But I was really impressed with him, not necessarily as being a superstar today, but as being a team member because it's really important in that Spanish team. We mentioned it during the game, not just the maturity of the 18-year-old, but also just the experience that he looks like he's got.
16:13If you didn't have the babyface features, you would think that he'd been playing for 10, 12 years because the whole time just wanting it, getting in space and kind of almost helping the other players as well, like dictating where they should go. Well, he's obviously going to draw comparisons to Messi and we looked at his stats previous to the game in terms of how much football he's played. It's frightening how much football he's played, by the way. You know, obviously he needs a really good team around him for his longevity in the game. But I loved it because he definitely does give this young side to him.
16:41You know, the way he plays, the way he turns up, the change, the heart, the excitement, the banter with his brother. I love all that. He's able to express himself. he's not afraid to be him but when he crosses the line he's so mature so so mature he's you know that's a team like I say that doesn't carry anyone won't carry anyone who thinks they're above the team and he more than works hard he more than stands up for himself and when it comes to his moment he more than takes it yeah I mean his little brother for me as well the stars at all I love that little kid I like the camera but that kid knows when the camera is on him every single immediately sees himself tongue out arms waving even before his parents and family know he's like I'm on he doesn't even need to be good at football does he his future's made that's all on the goalkeepers two things Unai Simon didn't have much to do but everything he did do did immaculately and maybe ask this after but like I do feel for David Wright who's been such an unbelievable goalkeeper can't get in that side because Luis De La Fuente So basically, he's just very loyal.
17:46Emi Martinez, though, he had a funny game because he made some really good saves. And then some others were like, has he greased his gloves? What's going on there? I just wondered what butter he put on his gloves before the game. Do you know what? His goal was under siege and he stood up for his team today. He's not really had a standout performance in this World Cup. And he very much does in an Argentinian shirt. And if they were going to get anything today, it would have been down to him. I thought even though some of it wasn't ideal that Argentina team is not ideal I think a few of the saves he literally just went I'm just going to get my body behind this and wherever it goes it goes there was a bounce and it was like just get anything to it and it was lucky bounce and I'm sure I'll be accused of this during the World Cup of making excuses but it's not excuses it's just creating a bit of narrative to what's gone on pitch looked very dry balls very quick but anyway he doesn't need me making excuses for him he's a world class goalkeeper who's played at the highest level could be in trouble here lads I think it's a motorcade behind us.
18:43I'm not entirely sure what's going on. But ultimately, Lloyd, as you know, he kept it out of the net for fast, for long periods of the game. And he nearly had Spain questioning themselves. Nearly. But I thought the finish from Ferran Torres was exceptional. Martinez stood big. It dropped to him. Rifled it into the roof of the net. That was the only way to beat him today. Lovely little set up by Williams as well. Yeah, the little nod back was, yeah. That's what I mean. He was good when he came on. What did he call me? I thought, yeah. little nod but I thought I don't know it's alright it's alright you're okay Enzo Fernandez got sent off two yellow cards the first one for diving it looked like a dive to me not really a problem with that and then the second challenge is just it's wild I was actually willing to see the replay he convinced me he was that convincing the way that he played they are good at that stuff afterwards as well I was like I saw whoever it was that he nailed it was Kovasi wasn't it I think Kovasi cartwheeling having been absolutely walloped yeah and I thought right I immediately thought straight red and then the way that Fernandez was arguing with the referee I thought maybe it's worth seeing and then you see it's like a two-footed block tackle sending him cartwheeling like how he could even think he was going to get away with a yellow card there I have no idea but That's the spirit of the Argentinians.
20:06They'll fight tooth and nail any which way possible to stay in the game. I do love a delicious Argentinian red, though, I've got to say. Oh, that's good. Yeah, that is nice, isn't it? I just thought of that. That is really lovely. This is not really about the football, but there was a lovely sort of footballing trope taking place next to us. So we had these two Argentinian, I mean, we were basically surrounded by Argentinians, and the two next to me were quite full on. Like father and son ultras. Yeah, like really like, they're really going for it. That was in the whole stadium, trust me, that was everywhere.
20:37Yeah, they were going for it. And they just did this thing at one point where one of them was just screaming, ref, ref. But in the way, well, you know, you get this in football stadiums at every level where the guy is genuinely thinks, I'm going to shout and I am going to get the ref's attention. We are not quite close enough for that. He's going, ref, ref. And even more fuming that he can't get hold of him. And every single time a Spanish player was tackled. And the referee gave a lot away today. I thought he was waving a lot of play on. This guy was going, dive, dive, every single time. And then when the yellow card slash red card happened, you just didn't go, yeah, I can't really justify that.
21:20I can't help you there. The Spain side have, for everyone, I think, been the best team at the tournament. and in the end quite comfortably and they've won in different ways and obviously everyone loved the way that France attacked but they dealt with that and you kind of think, I don't know what sort of team can beat Spain when they're playing like this. Frightening, I think that's fair to say, Rick. With the way that they've played, the composure that they've played, the belief internally, because they weren't red-hot favourites, were they? They were always fancied. Obviously they were exceptional in the Euros but they have just gone about it businessed.
22:01People have tried all different ways of competing with them and no one's gotten it. And the fact that a World Cup final with the previous winners and Lionel Messi in their team and how they got pumped today by Spain is actually scary with the youth in the side as well. A lot of these players are only going to get better. Lord knows where we go from here. Yeah, and defensively, so so I mean one goal conceded across an entire World Cup is just nuts yeah and Uno Simon obviously rightly so won the golden glove for the tournament but he actually faced 10 shots on target so and that's no slight on him you can only say what's in front of you and it's a good goal that beat him for Belgium but they were just so but they went about it you didn't see any kind of cavalier performances at the back they were just so controlled so composed and they just killed people with possession but you can't shy away from them defensively I think it'll be easy to look at the way that they've dismantled people up front but the likes of Rodri when in prayer of the tournament that means that people understand how important a player like him is and that he has sort of come back to that form because I think people wondered whether you'd ever see like Prime, Man City, Ballon d 'Or Rodri and we have seen him again at this tournament, he's been perfect.
23:17Anyone in the pub who kind of rubs their knee and says I'd have been a footballer I didn't have a knee injury. I'm sat here, mate. How dare you? But on a serious note, and I was lucky in my career, I never experienced any bad injury. I was never out more than two weeks, but it was nice sat next to someone like Micah Richards, whose career was cut short, and for him to have the understanding. I could see it in his eyes when he was talking about Rodri and having the understanding for him to come back and to fight through almost two years of whatever it is, and no one's ever going to feel sorry for footballers, and why would they?
23:48It's a life that we live and we're very well paid. But he's worked so hard. I don't know if you've come across him. He's a lovely man, really articulate, very intelligent man. And it would have frustrated him. I watched him play for Manchester City frustrated because his brain was telling him how to play football and his body just wasn't quite moving how he wanted it to do. But for him to get back to his level, that's only his level, by the way. He's, like you say, Ballon d 'Or winner, Manchester City Champions League, European champion, and now to be a world champion, captain of Spain, absolute level.
24:19So that year that's not been necessarily great for Manchester City shows that that's an anomaly and usually he's at that level. And just quickly, just because I've got to ask you while we've got you about David Reier, because he's been so good for Arsenal this season. The best goalkeeper in the Premier League by a distance, I would say, a big part of why they won. How frustrating for him that he just cannot get in that side? Well, I look at David Reier and I listen to him interview and I've spoken to him briefly. I think in the goalkeeping world, I'm not speaking for him. It's only what I think he might be thinking.
24:56There's understanding. Unai Simon came on, came into that Spanish team when David De Gea had taken over from Ica Casillas. He was the one. He was brilliant. He was absolutely fantastic at Manchester United. He had that wobbly patch. That was all it was going to take. Wobbly patch and Unai Simon stepped up for the national team. And he's not put a foot wrong. He's really not put a foot wrong. Now, I know David Rea has been pulling up trees this year, last year, even at Brentford. Garcia earning his move to Barcelona. They're two unbelievable goalkeepers. If we put down to a head-to-head of all three of them, their credentials on the table, it's an interesting fight.
25:32But Unai Simon has never let Del Gente down, ever. He's been fantastic, in fact. He's been instrumental in how they play and how they build up. So he deserves the gloves. Don't get me wrong, I've been there. If you have a few bad games, even though you deserve the gloves, that's when the vultures start circling. but he doesn't he's faultless he's been excellent and he's brilliant in this World Cup so I think to answer your question on David Ray he'll be devastated but there's no more he can do sometimes you've just got to be part of a team and understand it's not your moment goalkeepers are always well in my experience anyway quite close and very supportive of one another so it must be quite don't touch him do not touch certainly don't touch the suit not again we had that thing with Paul Robinson didn't we how do you like it now Rick I still, that was really horrible.
26:22But hey, given our support, if you are, then to sort of at the back of your mind be thinking, well, I hope this guy gives me an opportunity at some point. It's quite a weird thing to hold in your head. But there's no harm in thinking like that, right? I think the position, and I can't talk for everyone, sorry, but I can only talk from my perspective. And if I was number two to someone or if I was playing, I would want to treat exactly the same. Now I'm going to train, I'm going to work hard, and David Reyes, done everything he possibly can at Arsenal, and he's put it on the manager's toes. That's nothing to do with Unai Simon.
26:54Absolutely nothing to do with him. I'm sure he's a lovely man. I've played against him before. He seems like a cool guy. That's the manager's decision. Like I say, but once the manager makes his decision, you've got to be a supportive teammate. You've got to treat people exactly how you want to be treated when you're the number one. And I always thought that when I was playing and when I wasn't playing, how would I want to be treated? Because you need good people around you. It's a lonely position. And ultimately, you're working for your country. especially clubs a little bit different you're working for your country representing your country representing your people back home the people you went to school with and if that means that you've just got to be propping up someone to put them in the best possible position that's what you've got to do david ray is a good guy he's a good teammate of course he'd love to play given any chance he'd take that that chance but once the manager makes his decision that's when you get behind the guy that's playing it would be remiss of us not to ask something about the big row which you got roped into I think slightly unfairly to be honest I needed context to why on earth Wayne said that he'd row down the Mersey because we've all seen that clip where it looks like he's just announced it but he was asked to row I think in the programme and he went look I'll row if they get to the quarterfinal and once he did that I've absolutely loved working with Wayne this World Cup loved it I loved him as a team mate I've not really worked with him since we've come out the game but he's in such a good head space he's such a great guy and I'm glad the whole country and all worlds seeing his personality and once we were coming over it there's no way we weren't and there was no way Micah was getting out of it either so yeah we rolled together I think we worked well as a team and if that's what he wanted us to do then so be it Was it fun?
28:28Yeah it was I'm up for anything Micah will give you a different conversation because he's quite edgy and he doesn't like but if Wayne said he's jumping off the Empire State I'll be right by his side you need to be a little bit careful though don't let him lead you astray and just how was the experience of like we were in the stadium obviously and just loving it it's a kind of pinch yourself moment when you're in there for a World Cup final but working at a World Cup final what was it like for you? I think I would have loved to have been working a World Cup final that England were a part of and we all went through that on Wednesday, we put that to bed and I think we all turned up today and we just thought you know what we're here to enjoy ourselves we're obviously here to represent obviously the bbc is an important broadcaster for back home and try and bring back all the images and what it feels like in the stadium but how can you not love what's going on today yeah it was absolutely magical so much going on every single weather was fantastic you know even even the president being in the house i know whatever you think of him it still brings that little bit of drama that we're not necessarily used to the bulletproof glass the jets flying over yeah the half-time show the pre-show i show speed it was just what on earth was going on i'm glad that we i always like to arrive quite late and we did arrive literally just as it was about to start so we missed uh i i show speed because i kind of got quite hard work um but the half-time show he did all right you know did he do what did he do he sang and he rapped did he yeah not for me no well look look we'll watch it back and we'll have a look you've got to give the guy a chance although unlikely I think we're going to be impressed.

30:04The halftime show, it's got quite a lot of grief, I think, from people watching at home. In the stadium, I've got to speak for us. We liked it. I don't mind. Like I say, if that's what they're going to do, that's what I'm going to do. You'll hear Wayne's opinion. I'm sure you've seen it. Wayne's opinion was to the point. Wayne could be Prime Minister on Monday from absolutely nowhere. Burnham will be fuming. I've had one day. he said the halftime show was crap and we all love that I didn't mind it it's a joyous occasion have some fun I know it would have been disappointing for the guys they won that 15 minute break but a lot of effort went into it we got to see Madonna we got to see Madonna
30:48Justin Bieber I didn't quite get the kind of acoustic calm vibe he went for but hey you look at a man that applauded him and here's the reason a pure believer I'm not I am not I'm not a believer. However, everyone else is coming out and they've got, you know, a thousand backing dancers and blah, blah, blah. It's a big show. That guy has come out with a guitar like he's playing at a student house party. Yeah, he went rogue. I think fair play. I think that's kind of, he's rolled like that after the last couple of, I think Coachella, he just literally played himself on YouTube in the background and sang along a bit.
31:20That's weird. He had quite an afters feel about it. He's got, he's got previous, but hey, whatever. Let me play some of my new stuff. Yeah. Justin, it's the biggest show in the world. put it down mate put it down yeah he was rogue but that was fun Shakira obviously Shakira ever since 2010 World Cup is Shakira and Burnham Boy bought a bit here as well she's played more World Cup finals than Ronaldo hey has Paul Robinson told you that he's in the Shakira Waka Waka video hasn't no what he's in the video is he yeah we were having a little chat the other night he was like hey I'm in that video I was like no you're not Paul you've had half a lager no you're not and he went I am and he showed me the Waka Waka video and he's in is in the Waka Waka video what's he doing what's that little clip just celebrating yeah he's after Ronaldo we'll take it we'll take it we'll take it all day long yeah well fair play Joe absolute pleasure thank you mate cheers gentlemen enjoy your night well done as well absolutely fantastic work salute you all Lizzie as well we've done what we can we've done all we can but I tell you what we've got nothing left we've got nothing left

34:24Five Live Sport. Oh, I've lived in every ball of this. Listen on BBC Sounds.
34:31The Football Daily Podcast. After People World Cup 2026. With Rick Edwards and Lloyd Griffin. Listen on BBC Sounds. Right, joined now by Kelly Cates, fresh from, what were you doing? The World Cup final. The World Cup final, very nice. How was it for you? It was great. It was a terrible game, but it's very exciting to work on a World Cup final. It is. And it was horrendous to get in, and everybody's complained about the massive queues, and we were like, we can't go on air and say, oh, my God, we've stood outside for hours in the sunshine in New Jersey to come to a World Cup final and expect people to be sympathetic.
35:09That is how we started. That's great. We've documented it all thoroughly. You know people don't care. No. We talk about a lot of stuff that people don't care about on this podcast. Like line bikes and scooters. Exactly right. So you are a listener. Thank you. Long time listener, first time caller. What we don't want to talk about is the football. We want to talk about whatever else is talking about. No, because that was dull. It was dull. It was so dull. The halftime show. Now listen. Yes. You got your little timer going, didn't you? You were going to say he. Yeah, he. He got his little timer going.
35:39He got his little timer up. I have a name. That's very American. I find that when I go into shops here and they go, is that hers? And I'm like, oh my God, I have a name. I'm a person. Excuse me. Yeah, I'm not just her, but it's a very American turn of phrase. It's not offensive in America. No, and we are in America, so we're all right. So he got his little stopwatch out. Lloyd got his stopwatch out. Yeah, 27 minutes. And that was fine. People were fine with that. The security were okay with you getting your little stopwatch out. Yeah, because it's not a youpherson, to be fair. It was a stopwatch just for the viewers.
36:11And you'd like to point out it's not little. The time you've got on there, you started it too late. I started it too late. So we had to add on a minute. We are on a minute and 10 seconds. Okay. But it was 27 minutes. It was about 27 minutes. whistle to whistle I I didn't I didn't find it this is how I like to measure time yeah of course yeah in units of 2720 whistle to whistle I thought it was a nice length I thoroughly enjoyed it I did I did I thought it was good title of your sex tape everyone you shouldn't have watched my sex tape oh it's the last pod yeah it really it does feel like the last pod doesn't it everyone at home is saying it was moaning about it is it just that it was fun in the stadium.
36:52Did you like it? No, it wasn't fun in the stadium and it wasn't fun, I imagine, watching from home. But I think we had to embrace the ridiculousness of it. I think that was the point of it. It was dreadful. It was really weird. Why was it dreadful? Because Madonna got... Madonna was driven out. Madonna. Yeah. Madonna was driven out. And she performed for about seven seconds. By Ronaldo and Ronaldinho on a dune buggy with dancers flying off the side of it. That is bizarre. Sorry, what's your problem? I don't have a problem with it. Okay, good. My problem is, I think a football audience is a quite small-c conservative audience, don't like change, were quite sniffy about the fact that they were going to bring Super Bowl.
37:31Don't like luminescent tube buggies. Do not like luminescent tube buggies. And thought, what we want is some half-cut, portly man, misfiring penalties into a goal in the middle of the pitch. That's what they thought. But you're not half-cut. I could have been. You could, yeah. I could have been. If it had required it, you would have sacrificed yourself for it, wouldn't you? Well, do you know, we spoke about this on the podcast the other day, and you were quite cynical about the halftime show, I have to say. And I've completely, completely changed it. But I would have hated it if it had been amazing.
38:07If it had been a full Bad Bunny production, Super Bowl thing. If that had happened, I think I would have thought, oh, God, this is awful. But when we were about to go on air, Claire our producer sort of keyed through to me she went the effects through the radio mics are not great we're going to take the TV sound so that means that logistically I don't understand the logistics of it but logistically it is literally just your mic you can't bring any guests in so I had to talk through so I was like you're Graham Norton-ing I was Graham Norton-ing that's great so I would suggest I'm happy for you if I want to set myself up as Graham Norton I would suggest that people do not want to go back and listen to that and make those direct comparisons but to give you an idea of the level that I was operating at Justin Bieber finished quite abruptly and I was like oh he's finished and that was my musical knowledge there I did say, sorry to interrupt but I did say Burner Boy who's a big favourite of Serena Vigman the England women's team manager I mean I added value that's the kind of added value exactly that semi-enjoy semi-enjoy and I think it made up for the pain of how awful that was.
39:17Well, Rick applauded Justin Bieber. Yes, I did. Rick liked it so much. Yes. He applauded Justin Bieber. The emotion? No. Was it the World Cup Hallelujah line? No. Because that was amazing. Look, look. I got a brief through that said, Justin Bieber will be rewriting some of the lyrics to give them a World Cup flavour. And the rewritten lyric was, World Cup Hallelujah. So, well, a bit of detail about me. I've never heard that song before, so I didn't know he'd rewritten it. I thought maybe he'd done it. You're not a believer. I thought he'd done it. it before yeah you've got it in my view you had belieber written all over you here's what i liked i've said it before and i will say it again everyone else comes out with all their dances and production it's all right he comes out comes out he's just got a guitar i respect that he's got sheer inquired qualities to him well yeah i think i have to say look the to be able to do that that was me calling out your hypocrisy because i bet you don't like ed sheeran going to sing to the England players.
40:13No, hang on. No, no, I'd probably like it more than the England players look like they did. No, I actually don't mind Sheeran. Yeah. Again, I think that, I think it's a fair comparison. I think I would have preferred to see Sheeran do it. What about BTS doing the row? The Norwegian row? No, no. I don't really see that as well. No, no. You sort of do their, like that, like the people who've never kicked a ball before, like this. Like Diana Ross, which is what I want. Which is that. I want Diana Ross. That's what we want. They should have brought that back. Splitting a goal, but actually launching it like also I do feel I also feel like Diana Ross soundtracking USA 94 with I'm coming out yeah was was punchy I mean I think that has layers to it that we didn't see in this World Cup small c punchy small c punchy I like that we were very apprehensive from where we were set and maybe it's because we were in the kind of the belly of it because we were about 15 rows up or whatever oh it's so nice Do you know what?
41:12It absolutely was. I mean, again, not asked about hearing you moan about your experience now. No, but also, we loved it. Yeah, we haven't moaned very much. So just to go through what happened, Madonna starts, we can hear her, we don't know where she is. And I think for the TV viewers, you can see what's going on, whereas we didn't really have an idea. Saw her on big screens and you thought, is this pre-recorded Madonna from a studio? But there was quite a lot of that in the stadium where you had no idea where they were going to appear from. Or where they were. When they had young players at the tournament, golden glove, any of that.
41:47No idea. Where they're coming from, don't know. Is that person here? The thing that I loved quite a lot was the fact that the Sesame Street character. I'll be honest. It was the Muppets. Kermit and Piggy. Kermit and Piggy. That was the one. The thing is, I say that because, well I know that Miss Piggy was there, and actually that doesn't make sense, it is Muppets. Kermit. The thing is, we basically didn't have a front view, so we had a back view. We were at the back. So, like, spoiler alert, if there's any parents listening, your children, you might want to just turn this down. It's not naughty.
42:17We just saw... Yeah, exactly. Like, yeah. Yeah. Like, we could see it happening. Yeah. Honestly, we were just there going... We saw it. The sausages were made. Ted Lasso came out. I wasn't interested in Ted Lasso. He's in Ted Lasso, so that's really me. That's so... I'm not one of the lead roles. Yeah, well... What are you in, Ted Lasso? Yeah, I play a bloke called Lloyd. Yeah, that's good. Was it a stretch? I played a little fat reporter. Oh, yeah. Called Lloyd. So you were checking his notes? Yeah. I was. Yeah. But yeah, no, I mean, I'm in it quite a lot. I'm one of the main characters. I'm really pleased for you because it was really successful.
42:54Yeah, I know, partly because of me, but I don't like to mention it. Did we mention when you clapped Justin Bieber? Yeah. We did that one. Yeah, and I've defended myself. Thanks, Kelly. Thank you. Thank you very much. So the presentation of the trophy was interesting for a number of reasons. One, and I don't know if this, I can't work out if I think this is really disrespectful or not, but the Argentina players, once they got their second place medals, just stood with their backs to the Spain players and took the adulation of their fans. Mainly it was just them all shouting for Messi and bowing to Messi and then Messi was crying.
43:31It was quite moving. But I sort of felt like traditionally you watch while the winners get there, but whatever. And then they came up. And then the thing that everyone was eager to see was, would Trump place himself in the middle like he did with the Club World Cup? And you assume that someone has had a word and said, I don't think we do that again, Mr. President. And I think, just looking at it, I think Infantino has been briefed. It is your job... Heavily briefed. to make sure he doesn't hang around for that bit. And so he does all the handshaking and giving the medals. And then as they get the trophy, he's still just sort of lurking on the...
44:15He just walked across the other side. He just walked across and he's just sort of lurking. And Infantino's next to him sort of going, Ah, maybe. And then he just about, I think, clears in time for the kind of... No, I don't think he does. Oh, you don't think he does? I think he basically stays... He's edge of shot still. for the trophy raise goes that'll do and then just walks off yeah maybe and you just think that is a man who does not care about anything was that right producer Jonathan he just nodded yeah basically he doesn't care he'd obviously been briefed they'd obviously told him we're going to do this like yeah great yeah great yeah fine yeah yeah we'll do that yeah we'll do that he just does his own thing and well you know it is what it is it's his own man it is what it is and then the rest all sort of went fine.
45:04It's a nice moment for us personally when all the gold ticker tape went up and you started crystal-mazing it. And you were just grabbing it. You just started grabbing it. I did. And you kept... The best that you kept missing, you couldn't get... It's quite hard to grab. Yeah. Well, you're making it look hard. Slippery gold ticker tape. And then when you got your first bit and I got it all on camera, you just looked so happy. I was happy. And it was really nice. It was sweet. It was sweet. I do love the World Cup. I loved 1994. I was so excited about being there. And then there's ticker tape. You love ticker tape.
45:37I was like, I'm not going to be able to get grass because apparently you have to pay$750 for it, apparently. What's the next best thing? Well, ticker tape in the air. So I grabbed a couple of pieces and I've got them in my little breast pocket here. And that's lovely stuff to give to me niece and nephew. Oh, this is ticker tape from the 2026 World Cup. I thought it was really nice. But sorry, what you're not mentioning is that you went, oh, actually, I think I'll do that for my son as well. So you grabbed a few little bits. I grabbed one bit just off the floor. I just thought, just in case, it is a good gift.
46:06I don't think it is, but just in case, I've got a bit. And then we left the stadium and we met producer Jonathan and producer Lucy from breakfast, and we were doing some Vox spots for breakfast later on with fans. And we realised that we ended up standing in a place where there was just like a stream of celebrities just coming and just like coming out and it was look i i'd like to think i don't really get starstruck but when a man who i'm into spanish man as i'm interviewing him turns and just goes david beckham and just walks away from my from my microphone it was good and and posh and becks posh and becks they're just family with uh Yeah, no, not the whole family, no.
46:53And the big, like, phalanx of security sweeping through. It was fantastic. It was exciting. It was exciting. Oh, my gosh. We're in the little, we're in the hot spot. We're in the hot spot. Ike Casillas came out. Ike Casillas came out. Ike Casillas came through.
47:10Also, Jonathan and Lucy were on the way into the stadium. They saw Matt Damon. Matt Damon was in the queue behind them. Tom Cruise. E-brushed past them. Florence Pugh, Austin Butler Christina Aguilera yeah producer Lizzy got a reaction there no one else got a reaction and then there was just a moment that I think it's nice to share with everyone where we're trying to find it doesn't really matter what we're trying to find we're trying to find a thing we can't find in the broadcast compound and suddenly we just see these this healthy glowing, moving set of teeth basically, and it's Jurgen Klopp, and I've never yes, that's right and I said, Rick, there's Jurgen Klopp there, and I've never met Jurgen Klopp and I like Jurgen Klopp a lot and so, me and producer Jonathan we've got the mic chased after him a bit and I just said, quick, quick way for the BBC Jurgen, and he said no but it was not just that And Matuja Jonathan's got this on tape as well.
48:20What did you say after? I said, and this is completely true, and I stand by this, I said, well, I'm a Liverpool fan. I love you, so it doesn't matter that you don't want to talk to me. Absolutely pathetic. I was lovely. I was like, this is a beautiful way to end the World Cup. That wasn't, actually, that's not how it ended. How it ended was getting our nice photos in front of the stadium, and Lloyd is taking one, and he looks like a bit of a div. so much so that a lady, a nice Spanish lady, walks past and says, do you need help? To which I said, yeah, he really does. I was taking photos. I was just waiting for other people to clear.
49:01And she's like, do you need help? I was like, oh, no, bless you. Where were you standing? Like you're doing a selfie. No, no. Do the pose. Do the pose. No, you weren't. Do the pose. I was just holding my hands out. Do you need help? Pointing at the stadium, which I've talked about. I absolutely bloody love. And I think just basically Hun recognised Hun. And she was like, look, I know a queen when I see one and I think... Well, that's it. That is the last podcast done. Oh, Rick. Oh, Lloyd. I've had a lovely time. What are we going to do? I don't know, really. Sleep. Go and have a little sleep, maybe.
49:38We should say thank you very much to everyone who has listened, everyone who's said nice things and there has been some and we have I'm going to speak for both of us we've loved it yeah we have it's been great it's been really great also thank you to everyone who has been on the pod who's listened to the pod who's helped so the guys at Yoldy King's Head the guys here at Buddies I mean to a lesser extent we've only done three pods here but Yoldy King's Head really like mainstays they did the lion's share they did do the lion's share and obviously you can still if you'd like to push notifications like why not for a laugh you wouldn't you wouldn't get notified about anything now yeah but just turn them on I just don't think turn them off turn them off now yeah turn them off turn them off you don't need to don't turn on push notifications you don't need to listen to Football Daily now we're going well hang on I think I still do it so no no keep them on if you've got them on also I think we need to do a massive shout out to producer Lizzie she gets shout outs the whole time I know but she's had to put up with us she's had to live with us for however long watch me beat you at table tennis watch you come out in your towel oh sorry I thought it was a goal get back in there you weirdo to Casey who is literally holding a camera at the camera Dave who's sadly not here he's back in New York he's not dead no but he's back in New York dead to us and also as well I mean thanks to our other halves who have basically allowed us to do this and I mean we're not in the good books I mean I know I am going to take up permanent residence in the doghouse Yeah, so thank you.
51:16Thank you, Ima. Sorry, Ima. Thank you. Thank you, Phoebe. And see you soon. Yes. But please do your push notifications. Unless you don't want to.
