Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:10Hello and welcome to the tennis podcast live from Wimbledon. I say live from Wimbledon. I mean that in the loosest and most spiritual possible sense because we are neither live nor at Wimbledon.
0:29Vicki Spreadbury:Not this time. It's been an eventful start to our 2026 Wimbledon journey, David. It wasn't our fault, folks. We had all the plans in place. We'd ordered a massive air conditioning unit for this apartment and then it arrived and then it didn't work. Yeah, we're just sweaty and putney instead. We were going to be sweaty somewhere and we've decided to be sweaty and putney for tonight. this heatwave is scheduled to break it's scheduled to break when the new air conditioning unit is is now scheduled to arrive it's a long-term investment so that's our day folks 90 minutes of uh of troubleshooting uh three four adults and a dog trying to fix a broken aircon unit an hour of live chat with the manufacturers and an hour on the phone to the distributors.
1:28I was a huge Federer fan and everyone in my class was making fun of me that Federer was about to go out of Wimbledon and he saw I was in distress, Mr. Simms, and said, you can read Huckleberry Finn in your own time. Go into my office, watch the tennis. Oh, what a legend. What a hero. Gotcha. I reckon your kids will definitely know BTS. You can hear tittering in the background. That's Matthew. folks, who is only sticking around for this podcast because we promised him free dinner afterwards. Nicola Barton-Cover is in this section. She has Peyton Stearns in round one. Matthew, I can hear the rustling of whatever you're eating.
2:13And Jung Chin Wen is also in this section. She takes on Katerina Siniarkova in round one.
2:27Now he's just talking to us. We are live, Matthew. Oh, we're so back.
2:36I love this draw for Pagula. Yeah, I think I'm just feeling good about Pagula, you know. I have the same feeling about Pagula this year's Wimbledon as I had a bat in the Samoa at last year. It's like you look at the draw and you just think, I think she's going to get to the semis at least. and I actually think she might beat Samalenka in the semis. So there's an early prediction. She lost in the first round. I know, that's why it's a bold pick. I thought you'd like it, David. I do.
3:08Vicki Spreadbury:I mean, he's a very good player, Ogeli Asim. And he's got a new haircut. He's got a shaved head, which I'm a big fan of, as we know. David advocates everybody shaving their heads. Well, if you mean business, if you're a top seed and you mean business, you shave your head. Carlos Alcraz style is my experience. It definitely definitely happened that one time. Yeah, it definitely did happen that one time. It definitely was all about the shaved head and none other of Carlos Alcraz's attributes. If Ogione Asim goes further than he's ever been before at Wimbledon then you'll all be saying he's on to something.
3:46Vicki Spreadbury:Okay, but Stefano Sitsipas maybe in round two. He's not really that comfortable on grass but he could face He's not comfortable anywhere these days, really. He could face Oliver Tarvet in round three. I mean, after Rindiknesh. Here we go, Tarvet time. In round three. Tarvet against Rindiknesh is... Just for you, David. That was a perfect David bit. Rafal Hoda, who we're still yet to see on grass. He has never played a professional grass court match. Could be amazing on it. He doesn't know, we don't know. Casper Rude is in this section. I think we do know what Casper Rude is like on Gros. He's got Hubert Hurkac in round one.
4:30Enjoy your holiday, Casper.
4:35Vicki Spreadbury:Again, he wants to avoid having too much taken out of the tank. I do think he's super fit and he's a great competitor. David's been looking at his thirst traps on Instagram. That's what he wants, David. He wants us all to see it and say that. I really know what a thirst trap is. Just sort of gym selfies. Oh, OK. Right, gotcha. We'll tell you all about what Morgan Riddle's been saying after the show, if you like. OK. Or not. That's his ex. Or Matt and I will talk about that amongst ourselves. Oh, I'm very interested. Good or bad? Not great, I would say. All right.
5:16You're a Fritz guy. I think this is what's happening live in front of us. I don't know. I don't want to identify as that. You didn't want to be a Caballi guy a few months back. I don't want to put any labels on it. I think you've got Caballi in there. He seems to have been in Florence having a lovely time, barely even noticing that there's been a grass court season happening. Good luck to him. It's not what you say about Caspar Rood when he does that.
5:51Touche there, touche. Any other opportunities you want to give me to get hate from Kasper Rude fans? I don't need to give you the opportunities for that. It's a bit, guys. Good luck to you, Kasper, but I do think you're going to lose to Hubert Hurkacz in the first round, and I don't think you'll be that bothered. The moderator said, Right, Jessica is one of the players limiting her media activity today. And at that exact moment, the moderator's Siri on her phone went, I'm sorry, I don't understand.
6:30Charlie was sat next to me and just quipped, yeah, neither do we.
6:39It is now raining, which is an extraordinary development. just it's spitting yeah we're fine we're absolutely fine I think we're okay to be in denial about it for the time we're fine for the moment yeah I just David tell us about Grigel Dimitrov's press conference while I take a picture of Matthew filming the show underneath the Wilbur Dinn umbrella
7:02Vicki Spreadbury:with pleasure I had one more thing I wanted to mention from today's Media Day interviews and that was Matthew going to Venus Williams I don't think he did any important journalism while he was there He had a great time though He had a great time Matthew loves Venus Williams Can I just say that was like we are abiding by our own roof policy there aren't we Yeah absolutely We haven't proactively gone to our wet weather position plowed on with the show Matthew and I talked about it Survived a little bit of rain No harm, no foul. And here we are. Of course Serena came in not on official media day.
7:50She doesn't want to come in with a riffraff. What do you know about my joints? And she was like, well, sure she knows my game. Such a great line. Such a great line. Actually, Matt had been sitting next to me and I turned and started a conversation with him and he was just gone. like Caroline Garcia in a Grand Slam draw he was just gone just gone and I looked at the screen and realised Amanda Renesimova was impressed and that is of course where he was and he came back David buoyant oh hmm not on the bingo card was Kasparud not attending the Bad Bunny concert but Bad Bunny concert last night but Novak Djokovic making a cameo in the Bad Bunny concert last night have you seen this David?
8:40no
8:43he was on the big screen he had a mic he had a yeah i actually haven't plucked up the courage to listen to it sound on because i'm not sure i want to hear know that jokovic potentially singing or but good on him i might check it out glad he's having fun what a breathless first day it has been i'm trying to exhale but it's kind of all so much and so overwhelming and so brilliant I'm Catherine Whittaker, this is Matt Roberts, this is David Law. We have accidentally all worn white tonight. Yes, so you'll be able to see the bugs dive bombing us during this live show. You'll be able to see exactly how real our struggle with bugs is.
9:24Although they don't go for Matt, he's too pure. Anyway, we're all pure tonight, here we all are. Two white human beings away from a Backstreet Boys video.
9:37Vicki Spreadbury:I'm delighted with mine. The problem here is that I've got it in the agenda to slag off the Yannick's in a team. For all wearing the same. For all wearing the same outfits, because I hate that. Are we going to have to do a sort of pre-day chat about clothes? Maybe. Maybe. Do you remember two years ago when we had the same shirt? Yeah. We hope you've enjoyed your day here at Wimbledon and wish you a pleasant and safe journey home. Thank you. Oh, we are so back. A couple of misses in there, but I got the words right. I think hesitations rather than misses. Okay. So he had that going on, and then he also had this sort of horror story, horror movie situation developing with his foot.
10:28And he went off court, and I thought, OK, maybe surely he's going to sort that out, whatever's going on under there. And he came back and it was still blood red. I mean... I've never seen anything like that. It was haunting.
10:44Did Yelena Ostopenko get her Tesco sponsorship deal after the upgrade to Court 1? Did Tesco come a-calling once they saw she was getting the upgrade to BBC2? You're going to have to ask her. Yeah, I mean, that is actually a terrible dereliction of my journalistic duty that I didn't go to a press conference and ask that. If she's on court nine in the next round, has it mysteriously gone? It did look very hastily. It looked like it might have even been a sticky label. David, my gift to you is a question about Naomi Osaka's outfit. You've only got yourself to blame for this. Great. It was a custom Hannah Yagi outfit inspired by Japanese ceremonial dress.
11:33Vicki Spreadbury:I thought so, yeah.
11:37Just covering off the fashion section. Novak Djokovic's blazer.
11:44Vicki Spreadbury:Yeah, that definitely had 2006 Federer all over it, didn't it? And it says everything, David. But again, if you're with us on YouTube, you'll have just seen a picture of Kasper Rude grinning on his way to the net. I mean, I think he tried. You know, it's just... He almost won the third set for you, Catherine, to get you more predictions points. Couldn't even do that, could he?
12:15Jastremska was getting very, very frustrated. I went out to watch this one, stood courtside and Jastremska came over at one point to her team and said, and said, it's like I'm playing my sister. And I rolled. It's like under-14s tennis. And Pam Shriver, in the Stremska box for this one, in part of her role with Yonex, was like, well, you beat your sister. Oh, Pam, that's so good. It's the perfect thing to say. They need a name, don't they? The group of top players isn't very catchy. it's a it's a it's an admission that they have reached isn't it yeah that they went they got this one wrong there's already a confusion in the chat about the term fancy dress that i used earlier hannah's having to explain that that wasn't me saying i thought djokovic looked fancy that is that's what brits call costume like a costume party is a fancy dress party here So now they've got Barmy Army to contend with.
13:22I've not helped. Taylor Fritz relegated to court one with Dusan Lajovic, whose name was also corrected to Susan Lajovic by somebody on the barge earlier. And that tickled Matt so much. I did. I enjoyed it a lot. I'm not going to be able to think of him as Dusan anymore. Another absolutely breathless day here at Wimbledon and one that no matter what the result, and I'm sure you're all aware of it, it will go down in history because it is the day that 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams made her Wimbledon comeback at the age of 44. And everybody here, whether they were in Centre Court or on the hill or here on the broadcast roof setting up a live stream while it was happening, everybody here, I think, felt like they were a part of it.
14:21Vicki Spreadbury:Shelton didn't come out in a full suit, did he? Yeah, I mean, my notes from Fritz are Fritz Blazer versus Lajovic. 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
14:34Yeah.
14:35Vicki Spreadbury:Shall we just talk about the Blazer? I mean, that was the notable thing about this match, to be quite honest. He played Taylor Fritz tennis to win straight sets, right? Yeah. But he walked out onto the court for the first time in his entire life in a cream blazer and cream trousers. Clearly wasn't sure. You know, he says, I'm a seriously low-key guy. You know, I'm not really, you know, I didn't really want to be that guy that walks out to the court wearing this and then go and lose first round. It'd be so embarrassing. He was saying that full line. And then he was asked about the scarf that he was wearing and he goes, yeah, that was a game-time decision.
15:18Vicki Spreadbury:But he said the only thing I insisted on is that I could take the trousers off easily. So he had that Velcro thing going on or whatever it is. Whip them off like those stripper trousers. The blazer just feels like posh person cosplay, you know. So stop doing blazers. I might be a Fritz guy, you know. Well, you are a Fritz guy, Catherine. You've been in Denar for a couple of days. it's very clear but it's a very Caballi dumped it's multiple layers of irony that it's a blazer that I hate that might have brought me on this journey to finally admitting that I'm a Fritz guy so is he going to wear it for every match yeah that's it now has he confirmed that he's all in yeah he says that's it now this is my life now I'm a Fritz guy he's a blazer guy okay
16:16Mpeshi Perikar-Hanfman they'd split tie breaks I thought we're a business here no one's breaking serve in this one
16:23Vicki Spreadbury:Matt doesn't want a good match he just wants a statistical anomaly he went from 100 % invested it's my whole personality in Mpeshi Perikar-Hanfman to these two men are dead to me in a split second and he couldn't quite hold on you know he very nearly did it that's kind of been the story of his year hasn't it reminding you exactly who he used to be but then not quite having having it at the end um and then just this lovely moment afterwards where berrettini runs after him on the when he'd gone off the court and had his standing ovation suddenly berrettini forgot that wanted to give him the last towel on the court.
17:07Vicki Spreadbury:So he did. It was lovely. It was really lovely. He's just a good man to have in those moments because he genuinely connects and feels the things people are feeling and he's also willing to say it and be vulnerable like that. And yeah, it's really nice. Two Daniels. That can't happen very often. Is that in the newsletter? isn't it Daniil you know Daniil Taro Daniel Daniel Evans he's retiring it's not it's not the same well we had Alexander Alexander today didn't we we did but I'm specifically asking about Daniel and I obviously don't know the answer to that it's not in an it's also not Daniel Daniel it's Daniil I understand that's fine you making out like it happens all the time David less fine with that because I think You're gaslighting me about the prevalence of Daniels.
18:07I felt like I was being gaslighted about Med for Dead's name.
18:12Vicki Spreadbury:Yeah, it's really cool. Bethany Matic-Sands. Does that count? Yes. I think we'll accept it, yeah. Is it a tennis player reference? Where did I hear her? In the lawsuit. In the lawsuit. Between the warring PTPA factions.
18:35Can I do my last shout out? Yeah. Go for it. It is for Greg Allensworth. No, it's not. He's not paid for this. But I want to shout him out. What do you mean he's not paid for this? I want to shout him out because I forgot to mention him in the show and we had a change the lady situation today. Demir Jumher asked for Greg Allensworth to be changed. It's always Greg, isn't it? It's always Greg. There's always Greg is at the scene of some drama and I just felt like he deserved a mention. And Arta Ferry had earplugs in during the change of ends and there was a lot of reporting that it was because Jumbo was just going on and on and on.
19:19It turns out that actually he does have earplugs often. And yeah, I suspect Greg probably wanted some earplugs as well. The jacket was back. He put the jacket back on. He wore it to walk out. He put it back on for the interview. There was Rory McIlroy in the Royal Box today wearing his green Masters jacket. I just, I'm worried about the amount. What a moment. I'm just worried that blazes. What are you saying? David's trolling me tonight. Hindrance calls are on the rise. Hindrance drama's on the rise. Puking's on the rise. Blazers are on the rise. It's just another thing to look out for.
19:59Vicki Spreadbury:Are we saying that I'm back in? after all these years. Maybe.
20:07Krejcikova, Bartonkova, the winner to quite possibly pay Mukova. Tasty. Very Czech. So Czech. So Wimbledon. So Czech, yeah.
Read the full transcript
20:17Vicki Spreadbury:So pleased. Lots of speculation in the chat about what Yelena Ostopenko's meal deal preferences are. Greg James. was asked for one of his life hacks or a number of them and he said get a Tesco club card and get the meal deal. Tesco aren't paying us. They're paying... Yelena Ostopenko should be saying this. Jenson Brooksby guy is Matthew, by the way. And Matthew did think that Stefano Sittapas was beating Novak Djokovic. So take this with a pinch of salt. But he does rate Jenson Brooksby out of 10, Matthew. Out of 10, what are his chances to win the match? If they played this match ten times, Matthew thinks Jensen Brooksby is winning 50 % of the time.
21:09Blimey. He threatened to either eat or hit his dad. We're not sure which. He definitely threatened to hit him. Right. But it did sound a lot like eating. And I think Jenny Drummond in the interview thought he said eat originally. it was very charming the way he pronounces his words yeah totally charming
21:35Vicki Spreadbury:and once again it's um it's underlining why shaving your head before a ground slam is a good move david's wearing one um i think that's a jacket actually david it's just it's a suit it's a very nice suit jacket. Is that good or? I think it needs to have, actually I don't know what You've raised an interesting point. What is the difference? Does it need to have a sort of public school style embroidered emblem on it to make it a blazer? I'm not one of those. No. Good job because if you did you might look like Nigel Farage. Okay. I woke up this morning trudged into the kitchen David took one look at me and said do you think you need to go back to sleep for a bit?
22:25I did do that. And finally we have Susan Ramsey from Fulkirk in Scotland. Like Susan Lievich.
22:39Very good. That incredibly unprofessional intro was largely cameraman Matthew's fault but also because we have a crowd.
22:53They made it through security. Yay! We don't know how, but they are here and we are very grateful for the rule breakers of Wimbledon.
23:04Vicki Spreadbury:She said, Matteo Berrettini, and he goes, oh, that's going to be a pretty match. Game sees game. And I'm thinking, are you talking start of play or are you talking... Yeah, it's the sort of sad handsome off.
23:25Vicki Spreadbury:He wore the trousers again. He tried to do the stripper whip of the trousers a bit more smoothly today than he did two days ago, which wasn't hard because by his own admission, it was not smooth two days ago. He said he'd got some advice from Tiafoe, who really has got the magic mic thing down. Yeah, he looks like he's been doing it on a weekly basis. Yeah, off it goes. She gave the most wonderful on-court interview afterwards. She asked the crowd to sing happy birthday to her coach. Matthew joined in. I thought, oh, I'd love to join in. This is a real moment, but we're in the press box. Best not.
24:07Turned around. Matthew's in full voice. and I thought you go for it Matthew absolutely it was a great moment look I think she was at a sort of 4 out of 10 by her standards for most of this she's going to have to be 7 or 8 at least I would have thought to have a chance against Kees I'm going to miss him over like it you weren't there David it was really bad
24:39some very fun analysis i thought from taylor fritz about this match oh yeah he's like he's like the go-to guy for journalists if you want like a good breakdown of tennis patterns and reasons you go to you go to pagula if you want politics and and sort of tennis state of the union stuff and you go to fritz if you want nuts and bolts tennis stuff and he kind of gave it a bit of a he's never seen my pace quote when he was talking about the fact that he played Brooksby last year and he was like he did an unbelievable job of handling my pace he said he rates his pace so much Jessica Begulu against Jessica Buthas-Monero two Jessicas and it actually is two people with the same name as Tom huge
25:32Vicki Spreadbury:Krachykova and Mukova I don't think you could get a more picturesque looking, ball striking ball caressing match than that I thought you were going to say pretty and then I would have said Grigel Dimitrov disagrees with you Yeah In fact the biggest headline from it probably that Yelena Ostapenko seems to have lost her Tesco sponsorship Centre court playing the world number one, Tesco nowhere to be seen. Maybe her asking price went up. I informed Millie, my sister-in-law, who gave us the intel on the Tesco patch not being there for the doubles yesterday, and she said maybe they Googled her.
26:19Maybe they didn't do their due diligence in advance.
26:25Vicki Spreadbury:After he's five left down, when he's 5 '5 down, he punched himself in the thigh 11 times. Really thumped himself with frustration. Well, he was asked about that in the press conference afterwards, about hitting his legs, and he said it's nothing major. He said I was just trying to wake my muscles up. Yeah, I get that. I get that. You know, if you've sat in the one position, you're like, oh, my leg's gone to sleep. But anyway I mean the food Cliff Richard not in the Royal Box today Really? The food does seem quite nice Cliff Richard was in front of Robert McNichol today Wasn't he? I sent that screenshot to Robert McNichol And he replied Oh dear Does he know it's on our Instagram?
27:13Vicki Spreadbury:No he does not He does now Oh he loves Toast He is responsible for my first ever live tennis experience. He used to put on Cliff Richard and Friends. Like Gail and Friends. Every Christmas, just before Christmas, I went down, my mum would always get tickets, and we went down to Brighton, and we watched Cliff Richard, and he invited various tennis players. Back then it was Claire Wood, who was the British number one, and various other British tennis players, and Frank Bruno turned up because he's his friend as well. It's great fun. I feel like I've just watched an episode of Alan Partridge. It was incredible.
28:06Vicki Spreadbury:I said, he said, to be honest, if I play normal tennis, he's probably going to destroy me. I said, okay, so what are you going to do? He says, I think I'm going to try to distract him. I said, how do you mean? What are you going to do? And I think what he meant was disrupt him. He's going to come out in fancy dress. Hindrance drama is going to be on the rise in that match. It was great stuff. And happy, absolutely incredible day of tennis to everybody that loves tennis, which I assume is everybody that is watching and listening right now. The sort of day of sport that makes you feel truly alive, David.
28:57Vicki Spreadbury:Oh, it's been one of the great days that I've had at Wimbledon ever.
29:07He bought a subscription to some sort of streaming service this afternoon so that he could watch Eala in a parking lot. He had it up on his phone and the second he got up the live stream, a group of kids emerged around him like the Pied Piper. Which was so perfect because the commentator literally after the match had finished said, and there will be lots of little girls and little boys watching in the Philippines. And we were like, yes, we've got a photo of them watching over Jib's shoulder. It was magical. cool. And Jib sent this message to us earlier and I asked if he would mind us sharing it and he said no absolutely go ahead.
29:53He said with all the fucked up things happening in our country right now Alex's win tonight on Centre Court even for a moment makes being Filipino something to be proud of. I'm so happy to see people I know who have different political stances, different religions living in different walks of life sharing one singular thing tonight.
30:22Overheard in the media centre at the end of this set from somebody sitting a couple of rows over from us, what is Flavio doing? It was the question on everyone's lips. It was the question he was asked in the on-court interview after this match. Do you know what the answer was? I do.
30:40Vicki Spreadbury:Well, he started by saying it was a bit early. Yes, and I thought, that's Flavio. But then he went on to say, well, to paraphrase, watery shits.
30:54Vicki Spreadbury:It's not easy. I feel for you, Flavio. By the way, what was Flavio doing? That is a sentence that I hear so much during his match. You kept saying, what is Flavio doing on the floor all the time? He was every time, again, every time I looked up, he was on the floor. A lot of the time doing utterly spectacular things. I said to Matt, how are we going to get all of Matthew's takes in the show? Because he was out there for the whole thing, making notes. And Matt said, there weren't that many takes. I think we'll manage it. Quality over quantity, right, Matthew? Yeah. He came back and we went to have dinner and we finished dinner.
31:37And then he was like, right, I need to go to the toilet. I have not been to the toilet. He said, it creeps up on you, doesn't it? You forget about it when you're out there. And then suddenly you're like, I haven't been to the toilet for five hours.
31:53Vicki Spreadbury:I want you to get into Mertens. I'm not not into Mertens. What's happening here? I just feel like Mertens is, I feel like you'd like Mertens. I think I'm a really appropriate amount into Mertens.
32:12There's a lot of nonsense. And like tennis and non-tennis nonsense. It was about 8pm, not that dark, really not that dark. Good hour of light left. Hubert Hercatch asks to go off court to change his outfit. He's informed by the umpire he's already done that. You're only allowed to do that once. And he says, I really need to change my outfit. She said, look, just change your shirt here. That's all that's available to you. And then he heavily implied that he needed to change his underwear. And that was why he needed to go off court. She still insisted, I'm sorry, that's not in the rules. So then he said, it's getting dark though, isn't it?
32:51So maybe we should all go off court and just call it a day. Just go and I.
32:57Vicki Spreadbury:Trump's just sat there. For the first time in about three years, I saw him without his hat on. and he got his bleach blonde hair. He's a 36-year-old with frosted tips. That 8pm request to call it because of bad luck. But it's clearly still light, Hubie.
33:20He had the match point retirement here a couple of years ago.
33:24Vicki Spreadbury:He was definitely in that sort of frame of life. That was the same year. That was back-to-back slams with Change the Lady, wasn't it? Yeah, it was a few weeks after Change the Lady, G. not a great period Hubert Hurkac
33:39Riley Apelka who has made no secret of his feelings about doubles players in the past and just generally likes to have a big clickbaity opinion about things he posted a picture of an empty stadium for a doubles match at Indian Wells with hashtag save doubles and Henry Patton responded with a picture of an empty stadium watching a Riley Apelka match with hashtag save Apelka. And I just think he's nailed that.
34:07Vicki Spreadbury:It's pretty funny, that.
34:12I think that's the best slot of the day in terms of the audience in the Philippines. They're eight hours ahead, aren't we? I don't know why I'm saying this as a question. They are eight hours ahead. We are always Googling what time is it in the Philippines. Trying to work out whether Jim is awake. And the answer is always yes. It doesn't matter what time it is in the Philippines. It is day eight of the tournament. Matt is back. Yay! And it's just in time to see his beloved curfew in action. It can be done. Yeah, we always say that I metaphorically hit a wall. Oh my God. What a comeback. Around 15 minutes.
34:52Please make your way to the exit gates. And wish you a pleasant and safe journey home. Thank you. What a comeback. So, where was I? Proving he's no longer concussed there. Yes, we always say I metaphorically hit a wall, and I took that a little bit too, literally, a couple of nights ago.
35:20OK, so ferry winning today means that we get watery shit relived.
35:28he also told us so he had his uncle interview where he revealed that he didn't have a house an house an house for the second year running his dad his dad who is his coach has been convinced that they wouldn't need accommodation for the second week of Wimbledon he then revealed in the press conference that an Italian family has give us all the house here in Wimbledon.
35:58She apparently did a little mistake and had problems with her stomach in the first set, did Marta Kostchuk. Wow, I thought that was a Kabbali quote that found its way to the wrong part of the agenda. I did too. A rival for the face of IBS in tennis.
36:17I'm not saying she's a, you know, like, my number one watch but I just I just like Elise Mertens and don't want her catching strays that's all I'm saying
36:33Vicki Spreadbury:Isn't it fun though to have this many players where you really could feel like you could make a strong case for I love that There's a lot of players in the mix Is every player in the mix? Elise Mertens isn't She's not Tell him he's wrong. No, he's not wrong.
36:56I'm just distracted by someone saying in the chat, it's only fair that every Czech WTA player gets to win the title at least once.
37:02Vicki Spreadbury:It's like jury service. Marie Puzkova, 2029.
37:11Laura Siegmund is serving. It's seven all. She gets given a time violation, which I wasn't there. But you know it was legitimate. I'm going to assume that was absolutely legitimate. She then double faulted and then they went on to lose the match. She immediately marched to the umpire's chair and started complaining that Ostapenko, who she referred to as this one,
37:43hasn't got any time violations for all of her aborted ball tosses. she said and and the one time i go over the time and this one you give nothing ostepenko is obviously just doing great faces at all of this she ends up then having it out with edouard roger vaseline on the court at length well marcelo arvaro is in the background just blowing his nose, saying absolutely nothing. I stand with Yelena Ostopenko and her new sponsors, TK Maxx.
38:23With 39-year-old Novak Djokovic winning the longest quarterfinal in Wimbledon history. Five hours and 15 minutes for the win. Have you seen that Al Karaz was watching? Yes, and asking questions in some Instagram live stream. Yeah, and Alex Correcha Instagram Live, Carlos Alcaraz, was dropping comments, which is amazing. I mean, he wrapped up the interview himself, tried to do it politely by saying, by saying, thanks very much, my friend, but like a sort of character in a Pulp Fiction movie before they blow your head off.
39:10It is very interesting. You know, if you told me that we would have Yannick Sinner in the semifinals and Djokovic had just played a five-hour match and Alcaraz wasn't in the tournament, if you told me that a couple of months ago, I'd have thought, well, Wimbledon's going to be feeling like a foregone conclusion, to use those famous dance for girls' words. But it doesn't feel like that. It feels like there's jeopardy in this men's tournament. Goff's got the whole, this is what Grand Slam winning looks like for Coco Goff, but Karolina Mukhova's got Priscilla Hon.
39:49That's the secret sauce if you want to reach a Grand Slam final. Takeda Oda has an all-white chair, which is incredible. He said he's been wanting to make this happen for a while, sort of in honour of Wimbledon. And he spoke to his chair manufacturer and they were able to make that happen for him. And it just, it looks amazing. The day that 23-year-old British wildcard Arthur Ferry became just the second man to reach a Wimbledon semi-final. as a wild card. These are not hecklers for the tennis podcast. We are being caught in the crossfire of some John McEnroe heckling.
40:55We're live here, John.
40:58Vicki Spreadbury:We're live on air at the moment. Thank you, John. Yeah, you are, yeah.
41:08Hello and welcome to the Chinese podcast. I quite enjoyed, by the way, all the different variations of watery shits that people were coming up with today. Like Claire Balding on the BBC said Cabali had trouble with his tummy. Yeah. Other people have to adhere to Ofcom regulations when they're describing Flavia Caballi's bowel issues. Simon Briggs went with acute gastric distress.
41:40Could I just say, Pam Shriver is in the chat right now, live from a transatlantic flight. That's good stuff. That's good tech from Pam. Very well done, Virgin Atlantic. Can't get on the barge, but... You know when you see Yannick Sinner's mum watching him? It's like, someone tell her he's the best player in the world and it's probably going to be fine because she's not having fun. Arthur Ferry's mum's having a whale of a time.
42:09Vicki Spreadbury:And that fits entirely with the way Arthur seems to be going about it. So, like, I don't really see what the big deal is. So, it's different, I think. What percentage chance do you give Arthur Ferry on Friday against Ferev? 20. That was the number I had. Matthew? 70. 70. Did you say 17 or 70? 7-0. 7-0. Yeah, he's no Paul the Octopus, this guy, is he? Arthur Ferry, ladies and gentlemen. Wimbledon semi-finalist. And wish you a pleasant and safe journey home. Thank you. Thank you. it's like you're a sleeper cell that gets activated when that announcement starts happening I keep expecting one of you to come with me at Wimbledon I always want to come with you I think you should but I feel like I'd be treading on your toes please do I can do it too I feel like we've got to change this up a little bit oh really okay David doesn't look like he wants to go with it I think it'll be fun right I'm up for it
43:18so we'll be closing in around 15 minutes Please take exit gates and take all your belongings with you.
43:27Vicki Spreadbury:We hope you've enjoyed your day at Wimbledon. We wish you a safe and pleasant journey home. Thank you. Oh, Christ. Out of ten? Three. Did you remember to practice? Please say you didn't. Honestly, David, I didn't think I needed to. I approached that a bit caballi. you're brutal you aren't you and laid a similar sized egg I would say she used to be such a nice lad now he's a savage where were we
44:05there could not be more excitement I don't think than there is for Karolina Mukhova like she is
44:12Vicki Spreadbury:she's a real favourite she is such a favourite it feels like come on Mukhova well she deserves a Grand Slam she deserves a Wimbledon does feel like the sport is willing her on. I think the biggest problem will be nerves. I was going to say, do you think... They're both going to have that to deal with. This is a first-time Wimbledon occasion for both of them. With all the pomp and ceremony of Wimbledon's final day, and it's 4pm and it's quite late, there's a lot of time to think about it all. All the stillness. I'm getting nervous just thinking about the pre-match stillness. Pam's back in the chat and she has announced this by saying Pam is back Pam is back what a semi-final day yes Pam, agreed
45:06Vicki Spreadbury:She is quietly devastating, Linda Noshkova She quietly just knocks you out the tournament and I think you must wonder as an opponent did I really play the match did I really get chance to go through because I just I seemed to come on the court and the next thing I know I was walking off it again yes I I not going to make yourself unpopular in Czechia sorry in Ukraine like you are in the Philippines sorry Jim Matt can't afford to piss off any more nations.
45:47Do check out our Women's Final Preview show from last year as well, where we made Matt Roberts broadcast through what turned out to be quite a serious illness.
45:57Vicki Spreadbury:I had a quick look at that as well earlier, and he was sat there eating jelly beans. To sort of keep him conscious. It's all he could eat.
46:07In terms of protecting the grass, It's quite interesting how the Zverev serve affects the grass. Have you seen about this? No. How they've been reluctant to schedule him on centre court in the past, apparently, because his foot causes a sort of trench in the grass, the way he drags it. And you can see it on centre court. Sort of creating a gutter. There's a joke in there somewhere. I'll leave it. we are coming to you tonight just minutes after the speeches and the ceremony on centre court have concluded following an absolutely wild ride of a women's final here at Wimbledon wild build up for us also to this show ted being chucked across the desk just just moments ago uh but the wild of the women's final one by newly anointed Wimbledon champion Linda Nozkova.
47:08I haven't had the chance to fact check this. Just come in on the chat, Megan reporting that ESPN had said that when Nozkova, I think they've already spoken to Linda Nozkova and she perhaps told them this, said that when she went to the bathroom between the second and third sets that she stared at the trophy. I don't know if the trophy is in the loos in the Wimbledon clubhouse or just sort of... The Venus Rosewater dish deserves better. En route, I assume en route to the loos. If it's not obvious, we've never been into that very privileged area of the clubhouse.
47:42Vicki Spreadbury:Christopher Clary, the former correspondent of the New York Times, who's seen a lot of players the last 30 years in his role. I sat behind his hat. You did? Nice hat. Lovely Panama hat. To sit behind? I was slouching because I was worried about people behind me. I was sort of leaning on David like this to peer around the hat. This is our 17th and final day broadcasting live here from the Wimbledon roof. Pretty much our favourite place in the sporting world. It'll be very sad for us to say goodbye to this spot for another 50 weeks. But boy, are we going to make the most of the next hour talking about Yannick Sinner and his 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alexander Zverev in three hours and 46 minutes.
48:40Can we talk about the second set tiebreak that Yannick Sinner played? I would say it was one millimetre away from the perfect tiebreak. had that lob gone in and in the moment I thought it had gone in and certainly the bloke the Italian bloke behind me thought it had gone in not his most professional moment but I understand he made quite the noise better than the 90s the highest compliment David Law can pay to a tennis match
49:08Vicki Spreadbury:I'm different now so it wasn't as good as the 90s through my eyes I love this but that's when I fell in love access to the barge which is our toxicity free community platform although matthew is catching some strays on there earlier matthew takes issue with us on the barge and defend yourself matthew's taking issue with the fact that we claim it to be an untoxic environment on there make better predictions matthew and you'll be safe oh one last time we'll be closing in around 15 minutes come on guys please make your way to the exit gates and make sure you take all your belongings with you we hope you've enjoyed your day here at wimbledon and wish you a pleasant and safe journey home thank you pretty good Pam has just arrived in the chat Pam Shriver's here I know this because Pam has said Pam is late but here Thank you so much for joining us for these live from Wimbledon shows here at the Championships in 2026 it has been a great great pleasure to bring them to you congratulations to the champions Linda Nozkova, Yannick Sinner everybody else too that has lifted trophies over this weekend thank you David, thank you Matt one last time we will speak to you soon
