In short

An April Fools Day-themed episode riffing on how brands and culture “jester max” with pranks, while also doing sports and design/branding news (baseball concessions, stadium experiences, NFL Titans rebrand, Sprite/Apple/Starbucks/Sephora, and beverage/food packaging).

Guests

No named guests. The hosts are two recurring cohosts (referred to as Alex and Kevin).

Key claims

AI makes jokes easier (“bad idea” + prompt). Brands pre-release April Fools bits, so “pasta water” may be a prank. Baseball is leaning into spectacle (LED reliever intros, Korn/Trumpet entrances, and replay-assisted “balls/strikes” tension). Titans’ rebrand is an incremental improvement but loses the flame. Sprite’s return of the “lemon-lime” mark is a good tweak. Crazy Mountain NA beer looks authentic in design but is criticized for “cowboy” stolen valor vibes and only offering “original” and “lime.” Fit Bagel is accused of copying Better Bagel packaging.

Notable examples

7-Eleven hot dog water; “9-9-9” hot dogs/beer challenge; Shohei Cup souvenir cup; Apple “Little Finder Guy” TikTok; Sephora x Starbucks “Starbies”; Better Bagel vs Fit Bagel; Allbirds sold for $39M after $4B valuation.

0:00Kevin:It's a big April Fool's Day episode, huh? It's our favorite day of the year. April Fool's. It's a podcast. Just what you asked for. You just blew the April Fool's joke? What is the April Fool's Day joke? Well, we were going to set it up. We're going to be like, oh, it's the best brand day of the year. We're going to break down some of the funniest April Fool's Day jokes the brands have been playing. Boom, April Fool's. We actually don't have those yet because we're in the past. Oh, yeah, but you still did it too soon. Oh, shit. You got to riff a little bit on it. Oh, yeah. I love April Fool's Day.

0:33What a great holiday. And I love all the things that brands do for it. It's so funny and so hilarious.

0:38Kevin:And it's one of my favorite days of the year, actually. Yeah, there you go. That's more the tone I was looking for. Okay, it's true. I do love April Fool's Day. I wonder if this year things slow down a little bit just because I think we were April's Day. No, this is April Fool's Day. We've seen all of them. Oh, it's April Fool's Day today. today yes it's april fool's day today alex okay since ai is super prevalent now it's not even you know everyone can be making jokes there's the the barrier to entry is super low and um you don't really need that much to make a joke these days all you need is a bad idea yeah all you need is a prompt a prompt i think you know this this year is probably the best april fool's day we've ever seen just the sheer amount of jokes and uh yeah the brands the brands are jester maxing.

1:25Kevin:Yeah. As the kids are saying. Is that what the kids are saying? The kids are saying that. Wow, they're still saying that? You know, I think today we're here to break down some of our favorite April Fool's Day jokes that we've seen. Because it is, like we said, our favorite day of the year. It's true. We love April Fool's Day. April Fool's.

1:47Three, two, one.

1:50Kevin:Cabin! it's been a minute i resent the fact that uh there's only one day of the year that's for fools yeah you know we should be just all over every day is april fool's day if you're a fool i'm fooling around yeah exactly we're jesters on a fucking random wednesday yeah let alone april fool's day but yeah we don't need to we don't need to cover all these no no no who cares what did uh we are recording the day before to break the fourth wall wow wow so hopefully there's not any really good April Fool's Days. It's been a while. Yeah. If something happens crazy tomorrow, we'll have to record an emergency pod.

2:27No, we're not doing that. We're not going to.

2:29Kevin:I think my prediction... April Fool's, we're not doing that. No more work. I'm putting on my sort of prediction hat, my clairvoyant Bill Simmons. Don't even do this. You know when he does that bit? Don't do this because there's no... You can do that when it's like a week out. But like when it's the day that the pods released. There's no time to even ruminate on whether or not the prediction's true or not. This is my prediction is that April Fool's Day will be lesser than years past. I don't think the content will be the brands will be quite as prevalent with the Fools. Well, I just feel like now more than ever, maybe we need it.

3:06Maybe you might be right. I'm not saying whether we need it or not.

3:09Kevin:The brands might be thinking that we need it. We've been gesturing 2024, 2023, 2025. These years where we went We went full jesters, and I think this year, maybe just a little bit less of that. But who's going to be the big surprise? I guess we'll see today when this pod's released. We'll find out who's the big bread. Is Graza going to launch some sort of new condiment? What will Glenn Powell come out with secretly today? Who is to say? There is an elaborate ruse that I could look wrong, too, so I'm going to go ahead and speculate. last week uh snack shots shout out andrea she was talking about uh the canned pasta water oh which is um had a had a byline of more details are expected to be revealed on april 1st oh classic and then you can join a free fools pre-fool yeah they gotta you know brands can't have one moment you know they gotta have they gotta have they gotta make one moment into four moments so yeah it's like the super bowl we're gonna pre-launch our ads people are pre-launching their april fool's day to get ahead of the joke so we'll see if that's a joke i mean it did i mean canned posh water is kind of a funny idea like yeah and there are i think there's some practicality to it you know you could often you could use a splash you know when making sauces you could you there's there's use cases i could i could get behind maybe how that would be a useful thing to have but i guess we'll find out today yeah i mean who could forget years past we got like 7-Eleven hot dog water.

4:44We got Ayo Areoli. We were a part of that. I'm trying to think of other great...

4:54Kevin:You only like April Fool's Day jokes that we were a part of. I'm trying to remember great ones in the past of flavors and things that didn't come out. It's amazing how quickly those things leave your brain. April 2nd. And they're gone. And you're like, oh yeah, April Fool's. We're not doing that thing that we kind of think we should maybe do. You know what brands should do? You know what they should do? They should hold on to their April Fool's Day jokes and then do them in regular months of the year. I feel like we've said this before. Yeah. They're just good ideas. If it's a good April Fool's Day thing, then it's a good thing that the brand should be doing anyway.

5:27Kevin:Yeah, no need to blow your load on April 1. There you go. With the rest of the sheep. Do it on September 1. With the rest of the Jester brand. Exactly. You don't want to get lost in that. No, no, no. If it's funny enough, then it would make for a good content. some other time. If it's funny, it's going to play. Yeah, and I guess brands are sort of the memification of branding, which we've talked about many times. If you have a pasta water sort of energy drink, that's that plays. It's not energy. It's just a water. It's just pasta water. Yeah, that's a funny bit. It's actually the only day of the year that's not a good bit is April Fool's.

6:00Kevin:Yeah. Tired. Wasted, is that the name of the brand? Shout out. Yeah, shout out Wasted. Way to launch April Fool's Day. joke ahead of April. Well, we don't even know. We don't at this point. We don't know. We're speculating. We're so lost on the April Fool's day. Kevin baseball's back. The weather's shining. Sun's out. Let's go red legs. Temps are 70s. It's time to get to a ballpark and watch and watch some grass. Did you watch opening day at all? I did. Yeah. The Mets famously are great on opening day. We scored a fuck ton of runs. Skeens get them out of here. Yeah, you guys fucked. Yeah, we were the best team in baseball on the first day of the season.

6:37You guys You guys frame-mogged Paul Skeens in front of Livvy Dunn. We did. We did. We absolutely did. That's a fact.

6:42Kevin:You frame-mogged him. He didn't even make it out of the first inning. I mean, listen. Listen. That's just the New York Metropolitans. There's a lot of expectation. There's a lot of hope this team potentially could do some things. A little too early to tell, but I'm going to say a World Series of Boston. All right. Great. Yep. That's us. That's the baseball recap. That's the baseball recap. But, yeah. Did you see any of the new concessions? I did. I saw some of the stuff at Citi Field. I saw that there's a big push on the 9-9-9 thing. Oh, that pisses me off. That's stolen ball. Nine hot dogs and nine beers in nine innings is the move, right?

7:15And now certain ballparks, I believe the Mets are in one of them, are selling a box where you get nine hot dogs and nine beers. But you don't even get nine beers. No, you get like nine cups of beer. Cups of beer. You get maybe two beers.

7:26Kevin:Well, I mean. That's not the point. I get that. The spirit of the 9-9-9 is you're wasted and bloated and you feel like shit. Yes. Probably inning six. Hell, probably even inning four. Four hot dogs, four beers? That's crazy. Here's the thing, Kevin. If you want to do it the authentic way. With the pitch clock, too? Yeah. You're in trouble. You're in trouble, yeah. I could do it, though, 100%. But here's the thing. If you want to do the real challenge, do it on your own terms. Major League Baseball is not going to promote people drinking nine beers in three hours. No, they don't want that. They're going to be smashed.

8:00So the fact that they're even selling anything like this is actually kind of fascinating to me. But I like that they're sort of trying to get in the mix of internet content.

8:11Kevin:I could 100 % do this challenge. 999. I think you could. 100%. I will say hand up cannot. I'm not going to do it because I care. Yeah. You're responsible. I've got specific goals. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I could do this. I believe you could. I will not. I don't want to see you do it. Maybe at the end of the summer. We should go to a game though. Yeah, we should definitely go to a game. You know what? we should studio out yeah studio out that was fun yeah let's put that let's find a date let's get there and uh let's go to a day game that's what i'm saying thursday afternoon beautiful let's go let's go right now uh but yeah no i'm interested i mean i saw some of the you know sort of the classic stuff like matt's have like all sorts of i think the gimmicky food is really kind of uh run its course as well i think just like trying to deep fry you know rainbow cookies or whatever the fuck we're doing it's just like just give me some i don't know i think quality but did you see the hot dog beef wellington that the royals have i don't want that that's cool really don't why not i really don't no i just want a hot dog what about the rockies glizzzilla no that's too much it's a two foot one pound hot dog no no one wants that designed for sharing no one wants that no everyone just a sausage or you know you maybe go crazy and get like some sort of like what about some cool hip like what about the marlins machete it's like what is that it's a massive talk two foot long taco yeah i don't want a two foot long taco or sorry carne asada quesadilla two foot long quesadilla that's crazy that's awesome i'm here for it no you're not dude i i mean yeah i am i think like yeah you know baseball trying to appeal to more people you know trying to get more people to the ballpark they gotta have these um yeah you know they gotta they gotta step it up in the concession stands because i mean i like i mean i like that there are people yeah there are people who want sweet treats.

9:54But bring in good restaurants. I mean, I feel like that's what the city field is doing. I think they do. No, there's a difference between having a pig beat from Brooklyn opening up a barbecue stand and doing a two-foot-long taco that they don't eat. Well, you know, Alex, there's restaurants in other cities. I've never heard of... I don't believe that to be true. Not good ones.

10:13Kevin:Yeah, there are good restaurants in other cities. Yeah, I believe it, but I've never seen them. You're telling me you wouldn't want to eat this chicken and churro from... Chicken and churros? Chicken and churros? The Chicago Cubs? Absolutely not. Oh, my God. Speaking of, now a friend of the program, Adam Richman, has his own burger at Citi Field, which I respect him. Yeah, good for them. Good for him. We got to talk about the Shohei Cup. I mean, that is actually kind of news in the world of design. It's a cup that looks like Shohei Hotani's chest and waist, which quite an interesting decision to put his belt on there.

10:47Yeah. Just as a design decision, of course. It's a$75 souvenir cup that looks like his jersey and his belt. And what you get with it is free unlimited refills during the game for all the games of the entire season.

11:03Kevin:Well, now it's all the games. It was$75 for just one game, I believe. No one would ever spend$75 for an unlimited soda. Well, I think that's why the story is a story is because I think it was just for one game. No, that's insane. No, you have to refill your soda like 10 times to drink it. It says the one benefit of purchasing the cup was that fans received free unlimited refills during the game. Wow. Okay. But is that really worth$75 for just one game? So did they change it to make it all the games? Yeah, because everyone online started clowning. People were clowning, yeah. I mean, that's good on them to make the move then to be like, oh, it's all the games.

11:40Sorry, sorry.

11:41Kevin:Yeah, they dropped the price to$68.99. That's a good move, though. That's a good move. Everyone knows that the$75, seeing a seven is insane, but seeing a six is like - Yeah, a six, seven. Yeah, ooh, six, eight, you know. Yeah, yeah. At Citi Field, I feel like they have like a$40 popcorn that you can get refills on. Yeah, that's cool. Which is pretty solid because like a regular popcorn is like 20 bucks. So for double the price, you could just eat as much fucking popcorn as possible. Well, what's funny, like I was seeing some videos - I like that. I was seeing some videos and like these Delulu Dodger fans.

12:11Some of the worst fans.

12:12Kevin:Oh,$75 for free refills. Yeah. What a deal. Like this is so sick. And it's like the most LA thing ever, but good on them for making it the full season. I guess that that makes sense. I mean, these stadiums, they got to figure out ways, but then somebody, I saw a video from some Mariners fans and they were like, they went up to the souvenir stand and were like, Hey, how much is the souvenir cup? And they were like 14 bucks. And then they were like, and that's free refills. And they're like, yeah, bring it back. Any game for 14 bucks. Shout out to Mariners. Listen, good for them. Good for them. That's, I mean, that's, that's some real, that's some real man of the people shit.

12:44But what do you think of – so two things I've seen online about baseball this week that I like from a sort of like new culture perspective. One is the crazy intros for the relievers. Did you see the guy that comes into Korn?

12:57Kevin:Yeah, that one was good. That's electric. And like obviously the Tommy Trumpets, Edwin Diaz. Oh, they got a real trumpeter. They got a real trumpeter to play, which I thought was a nice move. I thought it looked cool. Didn't you guys do that at all? We did. You guys brought the guy in. We had Tommy Trumpets himself come and play. But then, you know, that was only for like the playoffs. So I guess this trumpeter will be there for every night to welcome Edwin Diaz into the ballpark. But I hope they still get paid if he doesn't come out. I hope so, too. And then I did see this corn introduction, which was pretty exciting.

13:26So I feel like and the big part of it is why they've always had music intros like famously.

13:32Kevin:What's his name from the Yankees came into like. Mariano Rivera, InterSandman. But like now the lights turn off. Yeah, it's a whole light show. And they kind of do the light show thing, which Citi Field has been doing for a couple of years. That makes it really fucking cool. The LED lights, dude, you can just turn them on and off. You don't have to. Yeah, it's not a whole day. Yeah, you remember how long it used to take to turn on those lights in stadiums? Crazy. Yeah, like minutes. Yeah, now it's like it gets dark and then the music hits and then the guy. It's pretty fucking cool. And then the second thing I saw was sort of questioning balls to strikes.

13:59Kevin:Oh, yeah. Which is kind of sick now. We had a real big one this weekend. Yeah. It was two in a row. Oh, is that you guys? Yeah. I watched that clip. Amazing. It was A.H.U. and E.O. Suarez. Suarez. Two in a row. Yep. And then I think he went yard on the next pitch. That's so sick. It is kind of cool. It brings tension to the game in a way that I think is fun. Where it's like, he calls him on a strike. He's like, he questions the ump. The ump's wrong. He's still in the at-bat. You know, ump questions the ump again. Ump's wrong. And then he hits the home run. It's like, that's fucking cool. Well, it's just going to be funny to watch these umpires get kind of like schooled by, you know, these dudes with amazing eyes.

14:36Kevin:Oh, totally. Because they're just, you know, eyeing stuff that's like a quarter of an inch. You're totally right. And shit's moving at like 100 miles an hour. You're going to see the difference between the players and the umps clearly here because it's like, holy shit, these guys are dialed in. And these umps are going to be grumpy about it. Yeah, they're like teachers and whatever. Do they have other jobs or no? They're full-time umps, by the way. They got to be full-time umps. They got to be full-time umps. I mean, I never understood why NFL. I mean, NFL makes a little bit of sense because it's like, what do you do during the week?

15:03It's like, study the rulebook. So I guess these people have other jobs.

15:07Kevin:It makes sense until you think about all the money that's in the league. And it's like, these guys should just probably be, yeah. There's enough money to go around to pay them full time. And there's also only so many games. Yeah. Whatever. Speaking of football, the Titans got a rebrand as a show that loves sports and design. I think it's not a huge transformation. It's really just a minimalist shift to kind of simplify some of the main branding, which I always felt. It's funny. like so much of NFL branding, when you look at it really closely, it's just really weird and kind of bizarre, but it's just, it's so much of it has history and it was drawn.

15:46And, you know, like Justin Thomas K, you know, sort of famously did that show where he did rebrands for sports teams. It's like, you kind of can't touch a lot of them, but there are some teams like the Titans that like, I think are up for grabs. And for some reason they have like a T that's like, what is that thing? I don't even know what that's like a flaming,

16:04Kevin:T-Shield. But what is it? I think there's some mythology around a Titan and what it means to be a Titan. And I think there are some... The flame motif is appropriate in that regard. I'm kind of mad they lost the flame. Yeah. I mean, you love... I thought we were carrying the flame here. I thought you were pro-flame. I'm hugely pro-flame. Yeah, I know you are. Also, I think they kind of lost the dark blue or sort of have moved towards the baby blue and and red here. Yeah, they moved more towards the Oilers, the traditional Houston Oilers colors, which they up and moved the franchise from Houston to Nashville.

16:44Yeah, brand new says, sort of Titans tightened. Is that Armin? Way to go, Armin. Yeah, fuck yeah. Yeah. Doesn't miss. Never misses. Oh, fun fact, they also are doing 2026 brand new conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Look at this cross promo here of Tennessee ad.

16:59Kevin:He did give it a very thorough job, like always. The old logo was fine, and I don't know that I love the new one. It kind of feels a little too retro. It's naked without the flame. And now it just also looks a little bit like the Tesla T. I'm sure every comment in the brand new comment section is like, oh, let's use Tesla. Let's see. Anyone seen Tesla? Yeah, I mean, it just kind of has a bit of a Tesla-y vibe, which you don't want. And I just never totally understand what that T is. I feel like if you're going to redo a sports franchise, you've got to really do it better, significantly better.

17:40I feel like this one is incrementally better. I would say that's my two cents on it. It's better. It's not worse.

17:46Kevin:I'm not mad about it. I think they did a good job. Again, I'm going to harp on it. I do miss the flame here. I did like the dimensionality of the T. It looks like a sword. I don't know. Now it's just like kind of flat and yeah, like you said, very Tesla-y. Yeah. But I mean, aside from the logo, like I think that they did a really good job in the system at large. Like, you know, they hammered down on Tennessee, you know, TN. They're trying to make a Tennessee's team, not just Nashville. And I like what they did with the uniforms. They, you know, there's like some kind of hidden meeting stuff that I'm not all that into.

18:24Kevin:They got a six-string stripe, which represents a guitar. Oh, yeah. Because of Nashville, famously. Yeah, it's pretty minimal. It's not forced. It looks pretty decent. I don't know. I like what they did with the uniforms. They just cleaned it up and simplified. I thought their previous iteration of uniforms were fucking garbage. With the sword shit on my shoulder pads, not very good. I like what they did here. I just, I wish, I wish they would carry the flame. Okay. I can, I can buy into that. It feels, you know what? It feels a little generic. That's my other thought. It's like, I don't like some of the typography and the sort of script and the sort of icon sort of a lockup.

19:10A lot of it just kind of feels like generic sports franchise. And I think without the colors, which obviously I do think are sort of iconic for that Oilers kind of throwback team. I just, I don't know. I just don't feel like it's that distinctive. And I feel like the flame kind of gave it a little bit of distinction. And I feel like they could have kept the flame in like maybe a smaller capacity, maybe instead of the flame being bigger than the logo itself, like which I think I could understand. Maybe you're trying to make it a little simpler, like maybe just a little not. Maybe one of those stars is a flame or something or like now.

19:44What are those stars? Keep the flame. Keep the flame bigger than the logo. Keep the flame.

19:48Kevin:I think keep the flame. Kevin's never going to walk away from the flame. Keep the logo as is. The man, Kevin, the man loves the flame. I would never advocate for removing flames. I know. I know. That's not who you are. No, that's just against my ethos. Uh, okay. I'm, I hear you. I think we can all agree. It's, it's, it's a fine incremental improvement, but I like what they did with the uniforms. I will say that. I think the uniforms are very successful. Nobody else has this color scheme. So it's like to the point of it being generic. Like I would argue that like, no, the colors are iconic. The colors, the colors pop.

20:14Kevin:I'm saying the rest of it, like the typography, the sort of stencils, the stuff like it just feels like, but let's, be honest how much is that actually being used in like a professional sports team brand a decent amount i mean i mean it's like it's auxiliary stuff okay it's auxiliary stuff you know what's not auxiliary stuff what uh the sprite limon so right limon are you not familiar with the limon what's the limon it's a little logo the lime that goes above uh the sprite logo okay it's a lemon lime and uh it was taken off the packaging uh maybe five years ago in favor of sort of this like really simple uh sort of uh update that the brand did and uh it was missing a little bit of flavor i guess and uh so sprite is back and they brought the lyman back and the lyman's back the lyman is back i like it i think it's a really good move i think it like they kind of retained what i liked about the sort of update to the brand that they did um like i said i think it was like four or five years ago so this it's kind of funny because it just got like a the big sprite rebrands And so this is kind of like, they just kind of came in and they just kind of tweaked something a little bit.

21:21Kevin:I can't believe they got rid of the Lyman in the first place. I mean, this is news to me today, but I really can't believe that looking at what it is today, I can't believe it was ever gone. Well, I think it was in favor of maybe some of the flavors of the other. They want to just put a frigging dot there? It was a dot. Yep. Yeah. Well, they had Sprite tea and they have Sprite flavors and chill and all these other things. But yeah, they did remove the lemon and lime off of the main branding. And now it's back. Oh, good. I'm glad they put it back. It looks good. It's back. I mean, how would you know what a, you know, sort of a, what, what type of product that is?

21:57It looks cool, but it didn't have the lemon and the lime.

21:59Kevin:Or you could put like a flavor on it. Yeah, no, it's bright flavored, but I do think the lemon I'm showing Kevin, the, yeah, the lemon and lime. It's, it's, it's, it's right where it's, it's meant to be right there above the logo. I think they also have gone horizontal with the branding. I think it was, or vertical with the logo mark, where I think it was oversized and horizontal, which was kind of nice. And then now they're going sort of vertical. And I think that's nice. There's also some sort of other brands in the system that they have introduced that I also thought. Well, they kept it horizontal on the bottles.

22:34On the flavors or on the bottles. On the bottles.

22:36Kevin:Yeah, the bottles needed to stay the same. For sure. But I think they did a nice job. I think Sprite's one of those brands that just, yeah, iconic. Oh, did you see the Skinny Can? Yeah, it's nice. It's nice. Yeah, Skinny Can is very nice. Yeah, a nice Sprite. And I think, again, they kind of kept the thing that was – they kept the thing that I liked that they did a number of years ago, which was just, again, Simplify, Modern, Clean. And then they just put just that little lemon-lime dog. Oh, yeah. Their flavors are real nice now. Yeah. Did you see those? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, Sprite. They almost look like some sort of design school type experiment in the best way.

23:14Kevin:No, no. Perfectly executed design school type experiment. Yeah, it's got a David Carson energy is what I think you're trying to say. They're kind of like some layered shit. Is it on brand new? Maybe Neville Brody is more appropriate. There you go, Kevin. Look at you with the fucking design history knowledge. You love to see it. Yeah, it's got some fun, funky flavor stuff, and I like it. I think they did a really nice job here. They didn't lose the plot here on Sprite. Yeah, good job, Coca-Cola. You know what? It makes me want to have a Sprite right now. Yeah. On a hot summer day, which today is.

23:46Kevin:I might be having a Sprite summer. Wow. I mean, listen, it's spicy, you know? Yeah. It's got that kick. I'm actually just having a water summer, to be honest. No, I know. I know. I know you. The branding that changed sort of was in 2022. So, yeah, roughly four years ago. Yeah, we covered it. They cleaned up everything. and yeah, they lost the lineman. So they had to go back and bring them, you know, listen, you know. Sometimes, you know, branding is a living, breathing thing. Yeah. A brand is a living, breathing thing and sometimes you just gotta go in and tweak the levels a little bit on things and that's okay.

24:23And we support them and their ability to. Yeah, they correct the course.

24:27Kevin:They correct the course. It works great. Yes. Next, we haven't talked about it, Kevin, but George Clooney launched an NAB-er. with his friends the Gerbers and some guy named Mike Meldman, which I think are the three people behind Casamigos Tequila. So they launched obviously a tequila brand probably like 10 years ago and they sold it for fucking hundreds of millions of dollars maybe more and they're back. Yeah, George Clooney, Cincinnati's finest. Oh, really? Yeah, he's a... Really? Yeah, there's a story about him trying out for the Reds and apparently he was ass at baseball. On that level, I think he's probably a good high school player.

25:06Yeah, it sold for$1 billion in 2017. Casamigos? Damn. That's crazy.

25:12Kevin:That tequila sucks. But people liked it. It was better for you tequila, I guess. Yeah, that's what they said. It worked. But those crazy kids are back with the new brand, Crazy Mountain. It is an N.A. beer and it's got a deeply yeehaw energy. It's got a full bleed photo of cowboys riding horses on the front of the packaging and no type on it. And I will say upon first glance, I do like the general aesthetic and the vibe of the packaging. I've been pro photos on packaging because we went so far flat and so far gradient and textures and, you know, sort of just using color. I kind of like seeing a full image on a can.

25:53Kevin:Yeah, it's definitely cool. I mean, like it looks sick. Good for him, but this is stolen Balor. So I have two problems with this brand. One, I feel like they're just going for the sort of yeehaw energy just because they think it's cool and trendy. And there's no authenticity to that for George Clooney. I do not believe George Clooney is a horse or cowboy enthusiast in any way. I don't think his real estate developer co-founders are either. Well, I don't know. You saw those pictures of them riding motorcycles in Mexico around the agave plants. Yeah, it gives that energy. I guess, again, do the founders need to be the spokespeople for the lifestyle of the person that's pictured on the packaging?

26:34I don't know. But that is my first question. It's like, yeah, this feels like Stolen Valor. They're just like, oh, it's a cool, trendy. Everyone in LA is wearing cowboy hats. People are going to these sort of country music festivals. Obviously, Post Malone went from rap to country. Country has been hot. So let's lean into that aesthetic. They're a little late, but I do think it still plays. For sure. My second major problem with this. You ready, Kevin? Crazy Mountain comes in only two varieties. One, original. Original beer and lime. A citrus forward option for those that want a little brightness.

27:16I feel like if you're going to launch a non-alcoholic beer brand, and obviously we have a lot of knowledge about the category, you got to come correct with the beers. like you have to come with like yeah quality quality products well we haven't tried it yet well we haven't tried it but i feel like you know athletic and and and bureau like they have really good authentic tasting beers yeah and they care about the beer making process clearly um bureau famously has an incredible beer brewmaster that like has been developing all the different varieties of a product i feel like if you launch with original and lime you're saying i don't really give a shit about beer yeah and i i can kind of tell already that these are going to taste like trash that's why i haven't tried it but i just feel like you're not taking the beer seriously

28:01Kevin:yeah i mean i'm i'm like uh you know i'm a water guy i'm probably not messing around with it with this uh with this noise but it does just seem fake as hell like with the cowboy aesthetic and you know this is designed for people in la like and shout out to them if you want to enjoy a crazy mountain beer, go ahead. Yeah, if you want to... We salute you. You want to dress with a lot of denim. If you want to ride George Clooney, be my guest. Yeah, I mean, I think the design of it, you know, we are a design podcast. I think it's well executed. Yeah, it's fire. They did a good job with it. It's a great job.

28:34Kevin:I like how they kept the sort of typography off of the front of the can, like whoever... How do they do that? I mean, they just, they got cojones. Like they... Well, isn't there like regulations and shit? Well, I guess then the back of the can is probably the front of the can if we're being honest. They just got a bunch of type there. They probably have a bunch of type on the back. That's my guess. All right. Fair enough. And I assume that's what they do. And so, yeah. I mean, I think it's cool to hold a beer and just have a picture of a cowboy on it. Yeah. It definitely makes you look cool. It's definitely courageous to have basically a front of can with nothing on it.

29:04For sure. And just being like, this is our brand. It's just a vibe. For sure. For sure.

29:08Kevin:I wonder who the cowboys are. I wonder who those people are. I imagine legit cowboys. They just stock photos. I don't know where they got them from. But I like it. Here's the one thing I hope to be with this podcast always is authentic. I'm not just going to shit on something because we built a competitive brand and we think it's better. I do think our brand is better. But credit where credit is due. And they're obviously making a big move. And I think this will potentially work. Listen, it looks sick. I agree. But also the beer should be a priority. I'm just saying the beer, if you're going to do soul and valor, uh, cowboy, uh, sort of, uh, vibes, just don't just come out with a rich original is not a beer flavor.

29:51Like at least call it a lager or something. Yeah. Like pretend, you know, pretend like you give a shit about the beer.

29:55Kevin:Yeah. Or like lime cerveza. Come on. Yeah, exactly. And then yeah. Lime. Your second flavor is fucking lime. Like lime. That's not a beer. That's not a beer. That should be your fourth flavor, fifth flavor. And just call it a shandy or something like pretend like you give a shit about the beer. Also. A little bit. Any real beer head knows you add your own lime. That's right. That artificial lime shit sucks. It's not terrible. Remember Bud Light with lime? No. It sucks. It's trash. You know what's also not really delicious, Kevin? What? Pasta water. We already talked about this. We already talked about this?

30:24Yeah.

30:24Kevin:We covered it in the beginning. Okay. You want to talk about it again? Not really. Okay. So let's just move on. So yeah, I think we sniffed this one out. It's an April Fool's Day joke. Pasta water. But it's a good one. It's a good one. And it got me. It got me. Kind of. Not really. I just didn't know what day we were in. I don't know what. I guess I should have saw. I didn't know we were doing pre-release April Fool's Day jokes. But in today's world, man. It's hard to say. Hard to say what's real and what's fake anymore. Yeah. Pasta water. Starch rich water. Well, yeah. Speaking of what's real and fake, did you see Little Finder Guy?

30:56Kevin:Look at you with the segue. Yeah. You didn't know. I didn't know about Little Finder Guy, a.k.a. the new sort of campaign from Apple. I wasn't sure if this was real and partly because it feels so un-Apple-like. But the truth is Apple has been doing some really un-Apple-like stuff in the last month. Yeah, they've been going hard on social, yeah. To promote their new product, the MacBook Neo, which is a lower-priced laptop targeting students and younger people at large. and to do so, they launched a TikTok page. They launched an Instagram page and they're doing all sorts of kind of like non-Apply type marketing that feels very youthful.

31:43Kevin:Yeah, it's good to see them think differently. It is fun. It is fun to let them kind of get a little weird with it. Like have some fun, make some content. Like Apple famously has really stuck to their brand guidelines in terms of one typeface and everything looks the same way. And it's obviously worked for many, many years. And yeah, this is bringing a little Gen Z energy. Definitely. It's cool to see them kind of cook because they got a plethora. Yes. Let Tim Cook. Yes, let Tim Cook. No, but they got a plethora of talent on that roster. Oh, my God. It's crazy. So it's good to see them think differently and have a fresh approach to work that maybe they haven't had in the past.

32:28Yeah. A little less precious. Yeah, have fun. They're having some fun. One of the things I really liked was they took one of the... Remember those old jelly kind of laptops that had the clear and the colors? One of the videos had, it was like a blush. It was like a makeup product that had that sort of old packaging. So yeah, it's kind of cool that I'm also playing a little bit of the nostalgia kind of going into the 80s and 90s bag. and that's where this little finder guy comes from.

32:54Kevin:They're like one of the brands that really hasn't played that card. It's so true. Every brand that has history plays it. It's kind of going into that. It's their time. It's their time. I think it's interesting to go into that 80s, 90s aesthetic. Obviously, young kids didn't live through that era, so they don't remember it. Yeah, bring back the jelly computers, you cowards. Absolutely. I love that plastic type shit. That's what I'm saying. They should bring those back. I think, again, those computers don't make any sense in today's world, But those material finishes might. Yeah. And that's the thing.

33:26These come in interesting colors. They got some like neon. So yeah, it's kind of fun. I like it. And I like to see Apple getting weird, mixing it up. TikTok followers up to 8 million. So I think the thing about Apple is like they don't have to like they do anything. People are paying attention to it. For sure.

33:42Kevin:I think it's fun. Little Finder guy is so adorable. Like it's one of those things where I just want one on my desktop. Yeah. They should make a little humanoid robot that can assist me in doing minor tasks. Yeah. I would love that. He's a 3D mascot. Yeah. Maybe a little finder guy can make me an espresso. Yeah. Do they sell him? I feel like you should be able to buy him. Not yet. I mean, I think he's just appearing in videos and being all nice and friendly and shit. Yeah. So he's in new TikTok videos this week. He's an anthropomorphic little finder icon and he's doing lots of stuff. I feel like this is a great move.

34:18Yeah.

34:18Kevin:I feel like whoever came up with this idea is probably just like, you know, so stoked on it. Yeah. I mean, it's one of those things that like. Or maybe they've been pitching it for years. I was going to say. There's something that they've thought about. But also like what a cool brief. I wonder who the, if they worked with an agency. Yeah. Stand up. Yeah. Or don't if you can't because NDA. Yeah. It's interesting because it's like they, like Apple is just letting them get weird with it. Have some fun. And for that, you know, we like it. I think there have been signs of this over the last year or two that they were loosening up some of the reins on the Apple brand.

34:53With the new thin and pro phones, they've been using that thicker typeface and some of the thinner stuff. Not to say that's a big, giant move, but they're just getting a little bit looser.

35:06Kevin:Yeah, it's more expressive than it used to be. More expressive. Look at Kevin bringing it here on a Tuesday. I see a talk about another brand getting expressive. What is that? What do you got, Kevin? You see Starbees at Sephora? Oh, that is a great segue, Kevin. Yeah. You showed me this for the first time. I was not aware. And I feel like I, you know, I have my finger on the pulse of this. Sephora did a launch with Starbucks. And so I guess it's a, is it a Starbucks inside of a Sephora? Is that what's going on? That's the experiential activation. And they are calling it Starbees instead of Starbucks.

35:38And it's got this like foil iridescent kind of energy to it. And I've only seen this one picture that you showed me. I've not seen this anywhere else, but I love it. I think it's really kind of fun. They made some reels. They made some reels.

35:50Kevin:They made some reels with some young influencer, like, just having the time of her life working at Starbucks, making drinks and stuff. Okay. Not my normal Starbucks, Starbies. I mean, yeah, let's get weird, guys. Let's have some fun. Lean into the cultural perception of your brand. That's good stuff. Yeah. And I've never heard anyone call Starbucks Starbies in my life, but like, sure, whatever. but yeah I'm here for it. Well I just don't think in our circles I don't think many people are going to Starbucks so I don't think there's a lot of people being like oh do you want Starbies? Yeah. Because I've kind of heard Starbies floating around the web a little bit.

36:25Kevin:Yeah. Not in my real life but on the internet. On my internet life I've heard it. Yeah it's interesting because I feel like Sephora is like one of the craziest places on planet earth in terms of just like people and trying stuff and just the general chaos, at least the ones that I've been to in New York. It's like full-on insane in there. There's just like, I don't know that people are spending a lot of time and they need a coffee while they're at a Sephora, but what do I know? Yeah, they need to get freaking hyped up, dude. But they should open more of these. They should open them like in the rent, like I think especially chain restaurants.

36:57I think we've talked about this before, but like we liked when McDonald's was trying to do the Cosmix thing. It didn't really go anywhere, but like you have fucking 9 million locations. Make one of them a Starby's and make it fucking iridescent. like get weird how many people would show up to that one and be like oh in my town we got the starbies it's not the same as the starbucks it's it's it's similar they got the exact same products

37:17Kevin:but it's got a different logo on the front yeah maybe they've like a couple special menu items yeah that's all you need yeah just put some uh sort of a magic dust on some shit make it sparkle and call it a day yeah i mean there's like the rock and roll mcdonald's in chicago which is a sort of just like a different design that they've kept and it's got this like giant arch on the side yeah yeah it's like that kind of stuff like it it brings people out you know and i think it's interesting uh and i like the starbies it's just kind of fun like i think the brands big brands like apple like starbucks getting a little bit more uh you know youthful and just getting weird loosen up the reins a little bit yeah exactly not every fucking starbucks needs to be green we know it we get it you know we've we've seen it before we know what you guys offer so um yeah make it Make it sparkle.

38:03Last story of the day, Kevin, Fit Bagel. You may have remembered. Not an April Fool's joke. Not an April Fool's joke. There was a company once we have talked about on this program called Better Bagel. In fact, we were so intrigued by the concept that we ordered it to the studio, to our podcast studio.

38:19Kevin:It was the early days. It was the first video recorded segment we ever did. Yeah, we were like, you know what? We need to try this. A Better Bagel. Packaging looked like an Apple product. And came moldy. I remember that distinctly. And it tasted. Then we got some new ones sent to us because they were such big influencers in the space. They were horrified. They were like, oh, no, we got to get you guys some new ones. And then we got the new ones, and they tasted absolutely horrendous. Yeah, the texture was pretty bad. The farts were pretty bad. They kind of wrecked me. Yes. Remember, it was like high in protein, high in fiber.

38:56High in farts, yeah. High in farts. Yeah, a Freudian slip there. And I think, if I remember correctly, my quote or our quote was like, if you want a bagel, eat a fucking bagel.

39:06Kevin:Yeah. Just, yeah. Which I still stand by. But that brand went out of business, I believe. And now there's a new brand with the exact same packaging, not called Better Bagel, but called The Fit Bagel. It has what I would call the exact same macros, the exact same packaging. And what the hell's going on here, Kevin? The former shipping partner says it has launched its own version of the better bagel called the Fit Bagel. Oh, God. This is a spite brand. After claiming it was ghosted by the brand. So, yeah, this is a spite brand. They stole the product. They stole the packaging. They stole the brand.

39:44They couldn't even kern the logo. No, no.

39:48Kevin:It's not a good job. I was looking around the website. Even the copy is just like. It's just like, oh, delicious. Are you hungry? Have a delicious bagel. Or it's like a bagel that delivers on your macros. That's hilarious. It's just like, oh my God. They just stole it. They just stole it straight up. I mean. Sure. Yeah. Got it. You know? I mean, I guess. Do it. You can feel free to steal the, like probably one of the worst CPG. Past decade. Yeah. It is funny. They have like taken on these equities that come with only baggage. Like they're not like, yeah, it's not like it was successful. It doesn't come with any like emotional attachment.

40:30It only comes with negative vibes.

40:31Kevin:I'm pretty sure everyone was like, yeah, my bagel was moldy. Yeah. Like, yeah, this bagel sucks. Yeah. This brand was terrible. Let's steal their brand identity so that people might think we're them. It's like, what? That's, that's not a great idea. Yeah. And the only thing that the better bagel brand had was sick packaging and sick design. Yeah. It was kind of cool. I remember when it came out, we were intrigued. I mean, I think we're all dreaming of a world where we can have better products that are the same products that we know and love, but just taste and taste exactly the same, but are better for us.

41:02And they did not match that.

41:03Kevin:No, unfortunately, no. I got some late breaking news from the one and only Andrea Hernandez because I had to check out to see what she had to say about the fit bagel situation. She's moved on, it seems like. But the class action lawsuit against David was dismissed. Oh, all right. So shout out to David. Victory for David. It's insane how much David, in terms of distribution, it's at every bodega. And they're not just like one or two SKUs. They got like the bodegas of New York City have 10 SKUs of David. Yeah. Which is really impressive. Yeah. I was hearing some David talk in the airport. Oh, yeah.

41:37Kevin:What were they saying? I mean, they were just kind of talking about the macros and how it was different from other bars. Yeah. Macro talk? Yeah. A little macro talk. I didn't want to hear it, so I turned my music up. Yeah. Yeah. I don't care. You're like, well, I don't want to listen to this. Who wants to hear about people talking about macros? The only people I want to hear to talk about macros are ripped guys on Instagram. If you're not a ripped guy on Instagram, shut the hell up. And graphic designers on a podcast talking about the branding of David. But yeah, they live to see another day. I think they're going to be hard to kill.

42:12Kevin:That's my feeling. I mean, they're huge. Yeah. Yeah, they're going to be one of those brands that just, they're going to take a lot of shots at them. Like people are going to take a lot of shots at them because they're doing well and they kind of have a bit of a boisterous kind of barstool sports energy. It's kind of like David Portnoy as a protein bar. But I feel like it's just - Wow, is that who they named it after secretly? Secret Angel Investor? That's good, Kevin. That's good. Yeah, that is true. It is. That's the secret inspiration of David Vard, David Portnoy. It's hard to kill, uncancellable.

42:49They're just going to keep claiming that the proteins aren't right and the products are fake and they're bad people. And I feel like they're just going to keep on selling products. Kevin, Amanda Batula and Wes Wilson are in a full blown relationship. Breaking news here on the program. More breaking news from the famous Bravo show Summer House, which I watched all 10 seasons of. So for the listeners out there that sit at the intersection of graphic design and Bravo reality television, please bang my line. We got to go. This is crazy. Another piece of late breaking news, Kevin. Why don't we just sit here and I'll just keep scrolling and break news.

43:20Hard knocks with the Seattle Seahawks, the champions. I think that's the first time that the champions have gone to do hard knocks in the following season. I feel like there was a rule. Like if you made the playoffs, you didn't have to do hard knocks. But they must have wanted it. They must have won it. Champions never rest.

43:35Kevin:Well, I think they are. Um. there was that rumor that they were going to be for sale or whatever. Oh, I don't know if they sold. So maybe this is like a value play for them. I don't think they sold, but yeah, no, that's a got to help the valuation, right? You win a championship, you go on hard knocks. This is, uh, yeah, this is going to up the valuation. I think big time. Oh, another story we didn't talk about fucking all birds. Once valuation, uh, valuation like a couple of years ago is$4 billion. Yeah. They sold yesterday for 39 million. Oh, fucking rough. That is tough. That is a fall from grace for all birds.

44:09You know, one of the worst shoes, never been on my feet, but like, yeah, that's DTC darling of 10 years ago. Right. They were like one of the first DTC brands, like DTC sneakers. Big for tech bros. Tech bros, San Fran, Silicon Valley, dads everywhere. They sold the equities and the assets for 39 million. A lot of people lost a lot of money. so you hate to see it i mean that's r.i.p apparently they've been like losing fuck tons of money and just like hemorrhaging well yeah that's millions that's how style works

44:43Kevin:baby but why i guess those things were never they were never in style but i guess they're like comfortable as hell i guess those people are now wearing on running or something like they like they've moved on to like a somewhat cooler hokas yeah hokas and on running uh yes all birds walk so uh on can run probably solomon yeah they probably the the tech bro i believe has in in order to adapt to their new setting environment. I think that they've had to evolve stylistically to not be classic tech bro. I think they've maybe stopped wearing Patagonia vests. I think they've maybe stopped wearing athleisure, some of them.

45:23Yeah. No, I think you're right. They've evolved. Their taste has improved marginally. It's necessary.

45:28Kevin:They had to. Yeah. And that's a shame for Allbirds because that is from$4 billion to$39 million. I wonder what the AI bros are going to be like. Yeah. I want the VC people that invest it to say, you know how everyone comes out and they're like, oh, proud to be part of this poppy sort of sale. I want someone to come out and be like, yeah, I took a huge beating on the Allbirds stock. Yeah, it's tough. Hey, you know, this is how it goes. sort of... It's a cost to be doing business. You know, we'll have to build them up and tear them down. And so there'll be a documentary on Netflix, how all birds flew too close to the sun.

46:10Kevin:Yeah. And that the unicorn that it once was is no longer... You hate to see it. One minute you're soaring, and the next you're done. Alright, April fools. April fools, please.
