I've seen one single YouTube video about drinking, which I think is like his banger, his top, top video. No drinking, cigs only. That's what he said in that video. A couple cigs are good for you. This guy just gives me the vibes of like, I'm faking all of this. Who, Huberman? Yeah. No, he's like a research lab at Stanford. Yeah, you've seen his research? No, but I would probably assume that Stanford wouldn't have some fucking schlub in the lab. Oh, yeah? Yeah. I went to the labs of MIT. Am I an MIT lab sort of scientist? Neuroscience?
0:40I mean, somebody brought you in there. You don't work there. The person... Andrew's Protocols to Maximize Your Productivity, Physical, and Mental Health. Yeah, a couple SIGs. A couple SIGs. Einstein was ripping SIGs. All the great minds probably before the 80s were just... Stogging it up. Ripping cigs. Yeah. Chain smoking. Stogies. Stogies are back. That'd be sweet. If we could just rip cigs and stogies in here all day, that'd be... If there's anything that Wim Hof and Huberman agree on, it's stogies. They're like... I don't know about Wim Hof. I feel like Wim Hof would probably... Be anti-stogie?
1:18It's breathing. Oh, you're right. Yeah. He's not against... He's probably against ripping darts. Yeah. Because the whole breathing thing. yeah you gotta breathe good he'd be more of a jewel guy
1:37ready three two one kevin what's up that was a very spastic clap on my card i didn't see it we'll have to see the uh look at a replay yeah it didn't it didn't look great i'll be honest um how are you buddy pretty good cool shirt have i not seen this one before uh i don't think i've ever worn it i bought it when i was a bit chunkier in 21 oh classic and then it's been in my storage unit since and i rescued it this weekend nice it's like a unisex sizing so like the large is like a glorified medium uh medium and a half maybe yeah it still smells like my storage unit which you know isn't isn't the best but you know i guess isn't the worst yeah i love a shirt that you know once you kind of uh get some lbs down you're you're gonna get back into it's it's been on the tip of my mind yeah i have i like to keep those shirts in my drawers uh so that i can always see them and feel that motivation look at you you actually put them away in a storage unit that's well i mean i don't have any space i have like very little space in my apartment yeah i share one that's why all my drawers are broken because they're just like so packed that's the way to go don't you have a storage unit i have three including the studio actually i just i saw some shit and i saw some shit in the well i just got rid of one oh you just got rid of a storage unit i'm down to two units um and i have the office where sometimes yeah some some things may show up yeah definitely uh and listen it's it's ashley's rolling over in her grave right now
3:02yeah you hate to see it my my ornaments are in the the closet here just listen um it's a temporary storage unit that's what they all say yeah that's what you say every time listen i'm i'm i'm paying for this space and sometimes i need to just get shit out of my apartment and I don't want to go all the way to one of my storage units because you got to get the key and you got to go to the floor and you got to do the thing and I'm already coming here. I've used our studio as a storage unit. Yeah, Kevin. Yeah, yeah. I've seen it. But only after you did, of course. Yeah, yeah. Well, there was one time where you had it.
3:36This is a big difference between me and you here, Kevin. Listen, I'll start charging you for space here. I don't have shit in here anymore. Well, yeah. During COVID, when this was an empty office, This wasn't the actual space. It was a storage. It was an act. It had my couch in here. That was a real storage unit situation. I mean, I like the couch. I never complained about the couch. Yeah, we got a new couch, which was much nicer. Less trafficked. Yeah. People used to sleep on that old couch, which is a good couch. Honestly, great couch. Did you see the trailer for the new season of Curb? No, I didn't.
4:08Oh, you should check it out. Yeah. You should have told me before the show. I know. Yeah. It's final season, baby. Wow. At the end. The end is near. I'll be sad, but I think it's time. Yeah, me too. All good things come to an end. The trailer looks incredible. Larry is leaving on Larry terms. I'm so confident in Larry's ability to land that plane. Oh, 100%. Yeah. There's a weird commercial where he like, it's Aliens. Did you see that one? No, I haven't seen shit. Yeah, there's a long form trailer which has clips from the season, which looks amazing and then there's a commercial that actually played during uh nfl games i saw and it's like it's a spaceship it comes down and an alien walks out and then larry walks up to the alien and then larry removes his face to reveal that he's an alien and he's like time to go home so nice yeah good job larry yeah a bit uh yeah a bit a bit a bit a bit weird but yeah whatever Sure.
5:11It's exciting. I look forward to that. I need a Sunday night HBO show. I'm going to just say this out loud and hopefully, you know, there's no, without an HBO Sunday night show, life is somewhat meaningless.
5:27Right? No, I don't feel that. Succession, White Lotus, Sopranos. We need something. Come on. We need something. I don't really care. Isn't White Lotus coming back soon? Yeah, they're filming another season. Oh, they're filming another season? There's True Detective is a thing that they just brought back. Oh, yeah. I don't have any interest. Have you ever watched any of those? Yeah, I've seen them. I think I've seen them all. This is the fourth season. The first was a banger. Yeah. I've rewatched the first one a couple times. Where do you watch the first one? Yeah, it's like one of the greatest television shows of all time.
5:59That is a bold take, my man. What are you talking about? True Detective season one? Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson? Are you fucking kidding me? Yeah. All day. That shit rules. i alexander daddario i'm not saying it's bad i'm not saying it's bad i'm just saying you haven't re-watched it no that's a red flag are you gonna watch a new season um i'll think about it it is i imagine it's on sunday night true detective true detective cool how was your ski day oh dude it's great yeah it was sick yeah everyone was very supportive about me taking a a sick day online yeah online and in person and in the office and the office i don't know i think i should take more sick days yeah uh for those that don't follow kevin on instagram which i recommend kevin took a sick day which was not because he was sick it's just because he was having a sick because i was getting sick where he went skiing and uh there was a big snowstorm yeah it was sweet so and then i i drove home uh as i was like leaving i mean it was kind of fucked on the way home because i drove like two hours uh on like a fucking state route with like kind of whiteout conditions and i was like damn i should be staying i should i should stay taking two sick days i should be you know hoisted up for having a self-control to come back to come back oh yeah yeah what a hero how brave yeah i mean hey i got home at 1 a.m i mean wow had to fucking drive around the neighborhood for a couple times to find some parking yeah yeah it was a nightmare The commitment to your job is huge, man.
7:30Thank you for coming back. Thank me for my service. Yeah, thank you for coming back after a three-day weekend that you gave yourself because you wanted to go skiing. And because snow came and it looked sick. Dog, I got five days on the mountain. Five days on the mountain? Yeah, did a little work from lodge situation on Friday. Jesus Christ. I'm a fucking psycho about it, dude. I'm impressed. I am impressed. I'm a little jealous, too. I woke up at 4.30, got my ass to Mount Snow, got a couple laps in before the meeting, worked for a couple hours, took an hour for lunch, wrapped shit up, and got out of there.
8:04Yeah, Kevin is that meme where you see the guy on the slopes with the green screen background that is on the Zoom pretending he's not on a mountain. Honestly, I'm jealous because I haven't gone snowboarding in a long time. Shit makes my brain feel crazy. It does. It's a level of endorphins and joy and happiness. I don't know how to describe it if you've never gone skiing. It's just adrenaline and shit. It's like a workout, but it's also joy. It's like a combination of those two things. It's like you're sweating, but it's also like you're not working that hard because you're going down a mountain.
8:38I was working hard. Yeah, it's sick. I work hard as fuck. Congrats, Kevin, on your sick day. While you were gone, the thing you need to know about the number one thing is that the Stanley Cup has taken over. Not the NHL. It's an actual Stanley cup made by a company called Stanley. Yeah, I've been seeing this. I'm probably the least on TikTok I've ever been in the past couple years since starting the app. I mean, I just watch Reels. Since you created the app? I'm not like... Since I created the app? What do you mean? You said since I started the app. Since I started using the app. I'm sorry. I misspoke.
9:14I didn't. I wish I make the app. I was kidding. If I made the app, I'd be skiing every fucking day of my life. If I made the app, Alex, I'd be skiing every fucking day of my life. yeah i wouldn't i wouldn't be here yeah i mean yeah sure the podcast would be done um yeah i'm even if the chiefs have a good weekend sometimes kevin's like i don't know maybe i'm gonna just be a full-time sports gambler uh yeah that's what i said to ardor on last on sunday night when i came i was like i went three for three on my big picks this weekend i should be a fucking influencer yeah yeah yeah call up caesars dude i'd be making i'd be making uh draft kings mad money with my uh with my parlays and shit because none of them hit for sure yeah you're definitely gonna make a living sports gambling for sure that's a good idea people do it no i know they do and i actually started entertaining the idea of refilling my caesar's account because i did bet the over on a game on saturday and it didn't hit and i was just like you know what do you mean that was which oh on saturday yeah it was here's what i'll say i think we're gambling responsibly is something i'm capable of doing.
10:16So if I just set a limit and it's like, I get a hundred bucks a month. Why would you ever want to limit yourself in anything, Alex? No, but I think I'm someone... Like at the casino, I know I'm going to the casino. I'm not a big gambler, right? So if I go to a casino, I go in knowing I'm going to lose, but I'm going to enjoy the losing process. So in my mind, I'm like, well, I'll lose a hundred bucks. I'll lose 250 bucks in three hours, but those three hours will be enjoyable. for me if I go in with that mindset. If I go in with the mindset, I'm like, I'm here to triple my money. That's not going to happen.
10:53But if you go in with the idea that... Bro, it's a mindset. I'm going in with a different mindset, which is it's fun to gamble a little bit. And so you just have to... Maybe I'm talking myself into sort of... Yeah. I mean, it's not even... Once it's in the app, it's not even real money. That's what I'm saying. It's just pixels. Here's a... You ready for this also, Logic, Kevin? I don't know if you know this, but I have a Skillshare class. If you are listening or watching this at home and want to know the power of building a great brand and you're like, hey, Alex seems to have built some really incredible brands and what can I learn from him?
11:27I really want to learn. There is a class on Skillshare.com called Building Brands People Love. I am the author and the creator of that class. You could take that class right now and you can learn all the secrets. We actually go through a project in which I talk through the beginnings of the strategy to the concepts, to design, to all things, to how we do it here at Center. It's a couple of years old, but it absolutely holds up. And you should take that class. Yeah. You should gamble on yourself after you watch that video. Correct. So that I can get paid for that class and all the money that's called passive income, Kevin, that I make from that Skillshare class, I could then use for my sports gambling.
12:11All I have is passive outcomes. Exactly. I've never had passive income in my life. It rules. And so now I'm willing to take that money, put it directly into my Caesars account. And look, that's free money. Free money that I now have. So Stanley Cup, we talked about Stanley sort of when the cup got lost or got left in the car. The car burned to embers and then the cup was still there. Still at Isidate. Still at Isidate. We called bullshit on that a little bit. We were questioning sort of the story here. but fishy a little fishy since then stanley cups are all the rage i'm not saying it's because of that video but it's it is an interesting sort of trajectory here where people are riding trying to get them out of target they're running through the aisles um or starbucks um they're signing them on stock x as collectibles and a fucking water bottle is the new tamagotchi that's lame as hell yeah i chill out about stuff it's a water bottle go get like a now gene or um yeah like a clean canteen or like something else or how about a glass from your uh from your cabinet and then fill that up with sink water and then yeah that works just that works great too that works totally fine well you know what wasn't broken regular ass glasses yeah you know when i go home at night and And I'm like, hey, I'm going to have some dinner tonight.
13:35And I'm going to have a drink with this dinner. I go to the cabinet. And I have glasses. And I fill it up with water. Because New York tap water. That's wild behavior. Goated. Yeah, it's got those little shrimps in it. And then I drink it. And then I clean it. Boom. You clean it after one drink? I mean, it's water. So it's like, you know, kind of just a. I mean, I kind of let my. You just let. I mean, I drink out of water bottle most. Really? You drink out of water bottle? Yeah, I got a home. I got a home now, Gene. You got a home now, Gene. I like keep a track of the ounces. Yeah. Well, I'm with you.
14:11I'm trying to pick up my water consumption. Nice. I'm using the bathroom every 10 minutes. Hell yeah. It's great. I'm on my L.A. Boy show. I love pissing. I went to the gym again today. Nice. This is like two weeks in a row where I've gone every other day. Well, let's see if I can remember, though. I'm on the fucking case, Kevin. Let's see. I'm sick of all this. soundboard roulette come on Kevin hit me thank you yeah that's my award show applause for me going to the gym for two weeks
14:50it took me 39 years but I think I'm going to start taking care of myself
15:00you're welcome um kevin we got a lot of topics to get into uh a ton of things to talk about uh before we get into all that did you see that a new company is making snortable caffeine powder i did see this i saw this via uh i think chris black on twitter oh yeah what did he say what was he saying i don't know if he said anything i think he just shared it sometimes yeah he chris black is one of i would argue my favorite person on twitter to follow done to death projects if you don't follow chris black yeah he is a cultural commentator i would say yeah and i mean i didn't have any comment on this that's fair i think sometimes he just presents things to be like basically presenting it as like what the fuck oh you're a cultural commentator what's your comment on this yeah yeah where where how do you be a cultural commentator and repost yeah yeah Where do you stand on snortable caffeine powder?
15:51So it's basically legalized cocaine or sort of cocaine? No, it's caffeine, Alex. You're missing that. It's caffeine. It's cocaine-free caffeine powder. It's probably cleaner than some stuff you would pick up at your local corner or in somebody's car, off the Signal app, wherever you – I mean, everyone's talking about sober curiosity and zero alcohol beverages, beers, cocktails, mixers. So here is zero cocaine-free cocaine. Yeah, Coke Zero. Yeah, Coke Zero. This is obviously insane. I remember a few years ago, Kevin, probably like 10 years ago, maybe more. I'm going to date myself. Someone came out with cocaine, the energy drink.
16:38And that got quite a bit of a run on the internet for the time. You sent it in emails. Sure. I'm sure BuzzFeed was all over that. Yeah. I don't know how long ago it was, but it was probably before Instagram, I want to say, which is a long time. So this is a thing. I wonder how long it lasts because I remember cocaine, the energy drink didn't last very long. I think it was shut down. I don't know who or how or why, but I think the powers that be, Joe Biden or the government, they probably will step in. Sounds like it was Obama era. Yeah, yeah. Thanks, Obama. Thanks, Obama. This is too powerful of an idea.
17:20This is one of those things to have a little vial of caffeine that you can bump. It's called bump. And literally - Yeah, companies want to bump? The company is called want to bump. And so - Bump, bump, bump. I think someone will just have to shut this thing down. We can't. This is too powerful of an idea. Not in 2024. We're not ready for this kind of thing. I think it plays. I think with the current landscape of hustle culture, I think hustle cultures move into fast and vigorous. I thought hustle culture was dead. I thought we replaced it with - No, no. It's evolving. It's back? I feel like it's going to evolve into we're going to work really hard for two or three hours, and then we're going to work hard, play hard.
18:02That's what I think. Okay. And then I think this really plays into that. you know you heard it here first guys two to three hours of hard work and then we uh then we go back to uh whatever the fuck we want to do that's that's endurance dude hustle culture so is that that's work-life balance so it's work hard play hard yeah i mean if i'm being i'm not never mind i'm not outing myself here okay i'm not outing myself to my boss okay imagine i go to a meeting and i take out a little vial of something that says wanna bump on it and i just do a little key of caffeine powder. Instant respect. We're talking in the preamble about how people used to be ripping cigs.
18:39People used to be ripping bumps too. Yeah, I guess, but not in meetings. Well, yeah. You'd go do it in the sanctity of a bathroom stall or in your personal office. Or you drink it with ice out of a plastic cup like a real fucking professional. I'm here for bumps. Yeah. I would be curious to see how long this lasts because I think this will be i would also be curious to see somebody's car maybe getting searched over over this oh yeah yeah yeah it is kind of liquid death ish yeah it seems like it does it does have a bit of that energy where you could just uh you know oh sorry officer this isn't cocaine this is my caffeine powder that i use to get some a little bit of energy when i want to do my uh yard work hustle ain't dead dude yeah hustle culture is back you heard it for your first uh i think it plays though i think i mean shout out to pizzazz pizzazz is a caffeine spray spray yeah that uh they've also copied uh pizzazz in that regard oh bump yeah yeah yeah they're going they've got a spray yeah oh really so they have a spray yeah watch out watch out jonah yeah uh you know come on the pod i'll put them on the list yeah put them we've been talking about that one forever yeah yeah that'd be fucking awesome i want to i want to hear his take on uh this uh new competitor and his uh sort of extreme caffeine, alternative caffeine distributors.
19:57Well, people are really into caffeine right now. You know, as the caffeine milligram numbers increase, the need for caffeine just, you know, it's kind of like, people want to buzz. Yeah. Coffee, I'm building a chart, audible chart, caffeine by coffee, lemonade that kills you, wanna bump you know it's just a it's an upward trajectory of uh caffeine i feel like we could probably get a sponsor from wanna bump yeah i listen kids at home uh don't order that it's only ten dollars on amazon don't fall for that don't don't even don't even try that is there an age restriction uh there i don't know i mean i don't think it's safe to put things up powders up your nose but i hey you're not a doctor you don't fucking huberman i don't know what the fuck Yeah, I wonder what Huberman thinks of Bump.
20:45Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, he'll probably think it's great. That guy definitely loves cocaine. You don't know anything about him. I watched one video. You watched one video. Yeah. Look at you standing up for a fucking - I don't know anything about him. Dr. Huberman? Huberman hubby? Is that you? That's what they call his fans. That's what they call his fans? Yeah. Well, that's certainly not me, but I don't know. I'm not out here disrespecting the man. You know what? there. Honda, Kevin. Honda, you know what they do? They make cars. And they have been doing that for a long time. And I will say, car branding is an interesting one.
21:26Because remember the whole Kia thing, where everyone was like, Kia looks like a K and an N. I think that really helped Kia. Yeah. I think it's a sick logo. It's a sick logo. It's arguably unarguably better than the previous Kia logo. Legibility be damned. We've been saying that. Yeah, legibility is fucking who needs it. Legibility is for losers. Yeah, it's a fucking feeling. And the brand, I think, felt more modern, felt cooler. And we all know that cars aren't changing their actual design of the cars. They'll continue to just roll out concept cars and then not make cars that look anything different than their current cars.
22:01Except for the Cybertruck. The Cybertruck. Now, that's an advancement in design. Yeah, I heard it's a big flop. Yeah? Yeah. Yeah, I mean, not to get off Honda. You see me riding around in my Cybertruck. Not to get off Honda, but I saw an old VW van outperform a Cybertruck. Oh, really? Off-terrain. Video? Yeah, on some rocks and shit. Sure. And then apparently you got to wash it immediately after any sort of rain, sleet, snow, any sort of thing gets on the surface because it's not finished and it's just going to corrode. Really? Interesting. Yeah. Did you see that Teslas were, because it was too cold, they couldn't charge them?
22:38So people were just literally leaving them on the side of the road. All bark, no bite. Yeah. I don't know about all that. Yeah. So basically Honda has a new logo for their EV sort of series of cars that are going to be introduced. And it looks pretty sick. Yeah, it does. It's really cool. They brought it out from the past. They went to the classic old logo sheet. Oh, dude. And they were like... The Honda old logo sheet is goaded. It's sick. Yeah. Every brand has an old logo sheet at this point online, if you just type it in. And you see the Honda Evolution. I think they're like 61 the best. Yeah.
23:12The one that's closest to what they just rolled out? Yeah. I think it's 63. Oh, 63. And so basically, if you know what the Honda looks like, I'll paint a picture for you. It's an H. And they've been making it more condensed since 1963. and it started out pretty wide and then they kind of made it smaller and now they're gone back to wide in 2024 and beyond and i will say looks sick yeah i mean part of it is also the way that it is placed on the car it's on this like purple background and i don't know it looks pretty tight this image of the car where it's like got like that infinity mirror i think that's corny yeah i think that shit looks so stupid but that purple gradient with the h in front of it that's kind of sick i mean it's kind of sick but then it's like i've seen that in like a fucking shitty les art gallery like seven times man there you go yeah that's fair i will say uh whoever did this nice job yeah nice job nice job to you buddy that was great uh all these cars are gonna look fucking stupid yep uh moving on make a normal looking car yeah tropicana tropicana has emerged as a leader in the war against the robots, Kevin.
24:28And did you see this coming? I didn't see Tropicana doing this. No, me neither. So this past week, Tropicana, the story comes with a die line. Of course it does, because I don't even need to look that up. I know the story comes with a die line, because the die line would be the people on the front lines of this story. Oh, yeah. About Tropicana on the front lines against the robots. And yeah, basically this week, they removed the letters A and I from the brand name to highlight its natural ingredients because according to their brand, there's nothing artificial about Tropicana, pure premium OJ, and they only use oranges, quote, picked at the pinnacle of ripeness and squeezed within 24 hours to create 100 % juice for more than 75 years.
25:07First and foremost, I have to say one thing. Tropicana is the best orange juice. I don't know. Go ahead. Go ahead. I would disagree. Pulp or no pulp, Kevin? Are you a pulp guy? I like some pulp. Yeah, you're wrong. I like it all. No, no. Tropicana, no pulp. goaded. I don't know. I would say that if you buy like a... I like this in-house OJ that comes from a bougie grocery store. It's kind of expensive. It tastes really fucking good. A little bit better. This is where Kevin and I are slightly different. Again, I am a man of the people. How often do you drink orange juice? Quite often. Quite often.
25:40I love orange juice. Really? I probably would say once a month I get a little Tropicana pint. I throw it in the fridge. With eggs, I mean, nothing is better with breakfast than Tropicana. No pull. I don't know. I'm not much of a beverage guy. I'm a man of the people. Kevin is now a bougie grocery, Brooklyn grocery guy where he's like, oh, let me get this sort of very fresh$20 sort of like pint of orange juice. It's like eight. And it tastes like very real. And it's like, it doesn't have any of the sugar that Tropicana has. Yeah. Get out of here. I'm Mr. Bougie. Yeah, you are, dude. You're Mr. fucking Brooklyn, you know, sort of Brooklyn bodega.
26:18But not the fancy ones. The fancy ones. I do live in a penthouse. So Tropicana, if you didn't pick up on that, so it's got two A's and one I. So they removed both of those A's and they removed the I so that the packaging, which I don't think this is going to retail, right? This is just a mock-up. It literally says Tropicon because it keeps the O, T-R-O-P-C-N. So if you picture a Tropicana bottle, it has the same arch. It's got the same type. It just removes those A's and the I. And so I have a quote here from Monica McGurk. She's the CEO of Tropicana Brands Group, North American's Business Unit.
27:03She said, Our limited edition run of Tropkin orange juice bottles represents our ongoing commitment to delivering the highest quality on 100 % orange juice to Americans. since 1954 tropicana has been at the forefront innovating ways to bring fresh tasting orange juice from natural oranges to breakfast tables nationwide's artificial just isn't in our dna damn right so i think listen everyone's talking about ai uh and at this point i feel like it's already over or it's late it's not over but it's like you know we're we're sick of it but this reminds me of when brands were all like trying to come up with ways to integrate nfts into their marketing conversation somehow.
27:46And it just like every creative agency is like, or tech agency is like, has to have a stance against AI or something. But like Tropicana orange juice feels like this is not your, this doesn't make sense for you guys. This is not the place to fight. Yeah. Originally I was a little against this, but then upon further review, I see what they're doing. I see what they're cooking up. you know this is just somebody's idea that you know they decided to run with yeah they thankfully it made it through we're talking about it which is always the response to like things that we think are not that great which is like it did find its way to us on the number one design podcast and so it must be something but it's definitely an odd stance to take as an orange juice company because how much AI could you really be using I mean I would be more concerned about the you know AI and creative are they using AI to sort oranges to make sure they're you know getting juiced at the proper time?
28:43What's the situation there? I did check this press little quote. I did run it through an AI checker and it did say that there was a fair chance that it was written by a human. It was a good chance it was written by a human. Got it. So you're checking the press release to make sure that they're not using AI to write a press release. I just wanted to check. I will say, of all AI's uses, press releases has got to be up there. because I feel like the way that it types and the way that it writes is very press release. I met somebody who writes press releases, skiing actually. Oh, yeah. They said that you'll be shocked to hear this, but CMOs?
Read the full transcript
29:23Yeah. Not writing those. It's PR. What? Yeah. Whoa. You're telling me that all the time I'm reading quotes from CMOs and CEOs that the PR agencies are actually the ones writing this behind? Oh, man. That changes everything. That's kind of how the sausage is made. whoa man that's crazy uh i will say did you hear that sports illustrated fired all of its writers yeah sad sad day fucking sad my father uh uh shout out to him reads sports illustrated does he have them stacked up in the garage uh he doesn't he doesn't hold on to them because he would bring them to his dental office but cover to cover every week probably for 30 50 40 million years who knows yeah my dad still has a big stack of yeah uh some magazines um and then they moved to the garage, which honestly will be kind of sick to go through.
30:13Here's one thing I noticed about this Sports Illustrated story, which wasn't a topic, but we should talk about it for a second, because it's a great brand, Sports Illustrated. 100%. Iconic magazine. They said they were getting rid of all their writers. They fired all of their staff. They didn't say they were shutting it down. So the question is, does the magazine continue with just AI writers? I don't know. Is it dead? Because they said they're laying off their staff and everyone was like, Sports Illustrated is dead, right? It laid off all of its writers. How could it continue? I don't know that that means the magazine is dead.
30:53I don't know that that means it's over for Sports Illustrated. I also know that someone bought it. I don't think they went bankrupt. I don't know the full story, but there's people that buy brands that are on their way out so they can hold... The equity of Sports Illustrated is actually worth something. The assets, the name, the trademark, the logo. Because it has 100 fucking years of history. So someone owns it that's not the original people of Sports Illustrated. So they've been kind of running that shit into the ground and not doing much. I mean, they keep running the magazine out, but it's not doing well as a business.
31:29Yeah, SI meets AI. Yeah. I think they... I'm just curious. Do they keep running out this... Like, just because they let off all the writers, does that mean that the magazine is dead? I don't know. Who knows? It could be more of a push to do, like, more content. Yeah, I don't know. It just, everyone took the story and ran with it as if it was dead. Yeah. And they were like, here's, let me tell you about my favorite Sports Illustrated moments. And it's like... The Sports Illustrated that you know is dead. Yeah, but that's been happening. I think Sports Illustrated has been dead, like, for 20 years, I think.
32:00This is not new. I think they, I don't know the full story. They did recently get kind of caught up in a little AI, you know, fake author type deal on the internet. And people are a little mad about that. Okay. Which is probably, I would guess, where they are going. But that's sad. I want to read a human writing. I just looked it up. And apparently they sold the company to a... The Draftskins? The Five Hour Energy founder for$50 million. How much? $50? Yeah, 50 million, which doesn't seem like a lot. But listen, I don't think it's dead. I think it will continue to come back. I think it's just like...
32:39What was it worth at its peak? I have no clue. I mean, it's tough because it's like a magazine subscription service isn't really a great way to make money. But I agree with you. The way this business, again, I'm not a business CEO of anything but a design studio, but I would imagine content is the way. And then they have to also probably get into sports gambling would probably be the right way to do it. Do a Sports Illustrated casino. You've got to find a way to evolve with the times. I don't think putting out a weekly magazine is a hugely financially rewarding thing. Because most people don't even want to pay for those things.
33:16If anything, they're like, I'll pay$10 a month or something. End of eras. Yeah, it's tough. RIP Tiger Woods and Nike. Oh, yeah. RIP Sports Illustrated. Yeah, did you see the new logo? AI meets SI. We should probably talk about this too. Did you see the Sunday red logo? For TaylorMade? For TaylorMade. I did not. Yeah, it's cool. It's interesting. It's like, it kind of looks like a, it's a tiger. It kind of looks like it's a jumping tiger. It has a bit of like a lacoste energy. It almost, you know what it kind of looks like? The Cincinnati Bengal. And - Wipped it off. Yeah, but it's only bones. So it kind of looks like, you know, a fish.
33:51Like it's bones? Yeah, it's like the bones of a tiger jumping. that's black on red. And it has an S, a D, and an R for Sunday Red is the name of the brand. I think it's interesting because it doesn't say Tiger Woods, but it does tie back to Tiger Woods as someone who obviously is famous for wearing red on Sundays. So I think it will be interesting if other golfers in the future are wearing Sunday Red. And that is an interesting brand decision. But yeah, I think the fallout from the Nike deal and I think it's interesting. I mean, Tiger is obviously on his way out, but can he turn this brand into Jordan?
34:31And so that's a thing for the future. These are the things I think about at night when I'm closing my eyes, like trying to go to sleep. I'm like, can Tiger pull a Jordan? In which case, his brand means more than himself to other people that are also the next generation of golfers. We'll see. Kevin, Subway is back. Oh yeah, let's go. Subway is our favorite brand to talk about. I can't believe we didn't even lead with this on the show today, But we are... It's been making sense how we've been running it. Yeah. We've been talking about Subway since the show started. Like genuinely. We have talked about all their moves that they've made over the past three years trying to distance themselves from Jared Fogle.
35:12And also just trying to reinvent Subway. Subway is the biggest chained restaurant in America or on the planet Earth. I don't know. I don't have stats. But there's a fuck ton of Subways. And part of the reason there is because to have a subway, all you need is like a cart. And a dream. And a dream. You can put it inside of a gas station. You can put that thing inside of a closet. You can basically start a subway anywhere. All you need is some bread and you need some meats. And a deli slicer. And a deli slicer because that was the big innovation of 2023, Kevin. The big innovation of 2024, are you ready for it?
35:48Yep. They're called subway sidekicks. and what those sidekicks are are a collection of three new footlong snacks available at all Subway restaurants moving forward on January 22nd, which was yesterday. You ready for the three footlong snacks? First and foremost, there's a footlong cookie. We've already talked about the footlong cookie because that was something that they rolled out last year. Weren't you hating on it? I was hating on it because I didn't really think that it... You didn't see the vision. I didn't see the vision, right? I was kind of like, a cookie needs to be round. That's maybe a controversial statement, but I didn't like the fact that this cookie looked like it was made out of the same bread mold that the bread was made out of.
36:31How dare you enforce stereotypical cookie shapes on Subway cookies, Alex. That's fucked up. No, it's true. In 2024, you're going to hammer that? That's crazy. I didn't love the shape of this cookie. It felt like they just, I don't know, it just had like a little bit of a divot in the middle. And to be honest, when I go to Subway, I'm not really trying to get those cookies. I know people like the cookies. I know that people enjoy the cookies from Subway. They make them fresh. They heat them up. I get it. But I'm not a, listen, I'm more of a saver guy. I say that all the time, right? I'm not much of a sweets guy.
37:02So when I go to Subway, I'll get a footlong sandwich. I'll get a bag of chips. I'll get a drink. And I'm out of there. Maybe not even get a drink. But, so the cookie was announced last year. And I was like, I don't really, this isn't really working for me. But, you know, kind of, they've been trying it. And it's a footlong. and it looks weird. It looks like a weird shovel of some sort. Yes. What they are now introducing are two additional products to the footlong cookie, which is Auntie Anne's footlong pretzel, which reimagines Auntie Anne's buttery and salty classic served with a side of Subway's honey mustard that takes each bite to another level.
37:40And then on top of that is a Cinnabon footlong churro for$2. The pretzel is$3 and the cookie is$5. And the churro is baked to perfection, served warm, and topped with Cinnabon's world-famous macara cinnamon and sugar. Wow. And when I say that churros and pretzels. Subway's got to smell crazy now. Now we're fucking talking. Because cookies, you already did cookies. They're fine a foot long. But two of my favorite things on planet Earth are a soft hot pretzel and a churro. Churro, in my opinion, at the end of a delicious meal, is arguably one of my favorite desserts to get at a restaurant or at Disney.
38:25I'll even sometimes get a churro in the subway. Not my favorite, but sometimes. That's my preferred churro. Really? Yeah, the subway churro? Yes. So I wasn't here for this. I didn't like this idea, but Kevin, your point. I didn't see the vision. And now when I'm thinking about brand assets that Subway owns, right? You got the green and the yellow. You got Jared. We forgot about him. And you got the$5 foot long. Yeah. So you're the foot long company. They own a whole ass unit of measurement. They do. Exactly. One foot. No one else can measure. Yeah. Owns that. When you think of foot long,$5 foot long, what do you think of?
39:05Subway, of course. So the fact that they roll out a$5 foot long cookie and then a$3 foot long churro and a$2 foot long churro and a$3 foot long pretzel. Let's go, baby. Now we're talking. I do like this vision. I fuck with the vision. But I want to call something out. These pretzels do not appear to be a foot long. They appear to be seven or eight inches. Is that not enough, Kevin? I mean, don't call them a foot long then. I mean, we know people love to be inflating numbers when it comes to inches. That's right. I'm just saying. I'm just saying. This is Kevin's new bit, by the way. Do you want to tell the people about your new bit?
39:46No, we'll just let them organically find out. Kevin's just saying. I'm just saying. These pretzels are maybe a little girthier than the churros, but they're certainly not a foot, and they're embellishing a little bit. Okay. Just make it right. So, boy, make them a foot. You're going from the photo, right? Yes. Which I think is worthwhile. Seven or eight, and with some girth, that's great. That's great for people who like that. But if I'm buying a foot-long pretzel, I want it to be a foot. I want it to be 12 inches long. I'm watching a video right now, and I think it's very clear that the churro is a foot-long.
40:22I think a churro is probably naturally about a foot long. They're very long and skinny, so I don't think that's a great innovation in churros. It's just basically churros, which, again, are awesome. Yeah. There's nothing wrong with fried dough. I'm looking at a pretzel, Kevin, and I think you're being sort of misguided by the image because the pretzels in the image are broken in half. Oh. And the image I'm looking at has all three laid out together, and they are all exactly the same length. Whoa. All right. Well, I take back my size shaming and my, yeah. Yeah. So if it's a foot If it's a foot If it's a foot I'm chilling I'm chilling on this take A$3 foot long pretzel?
41:07But you better make sure it's a foot That's pretty fucking good That's a good deal, Kevin Yeah I'm gonna march my ass Into a fucking Subway sandwich shop right now It's a bit of an odd choice To break a pretzel in half in this Yeah Because none of them appear to be a foot No, that's true I think you're going off of the photo That's why I had to go find more research But I think it's a great idea I like the name Sidekicks that's cute subway sidekicks and yeah I think this is a good idea I'm here to say it subway remains to be seen if this works or if people like this but sure I think this is Alex likes this I'm here for this and I think this is the best idea they've had they've had a lot of bad ideas it's 2024 the year of subway subway back are they listening to the pod just grinding yeah grinding coming out with innovation they're in the lab we're giving them bulletin board material yeah They're listening to our pod saying we got to be better for these guys.
42:02Yeah. They clearly don't. They underestimate us. So for the first time ever, I think we are giving Subway flowers on this. I believe so. We're even going to read a quote from Douglas Fry, the president of Subway North America. He says, quote, the introduction of sidekicks builds on six decades of equity and expertise in all things footlong. Damn. That's what I said. This whole new category on the menu offers Subway fans something they can't get anywhere else and kicks off a year of culinary innovation and delicious new menu items. 2024 may be the most exciting chapter yet in our growth story. Wow.
42:35Which, Kevin. Growth. Growth and 2024, you know, staying positive, looking forward. This is our year. That's what they said. 2024, our year. And they just put up a churro and a pretzel. Listen, I want to pump the brakes on the word innovation. when we're talking about a churro and a pretzel. But listen, I will say, in the world of where we talk about how McDonald's just regurgitates the same food and just calls it a new meal with Cardi B, even though it's just like, you can get that any other day. This is kind of innovation. Innovation that excites. It's innovation that excites. Fronty watch. Watch out.
43:18Churros are naturally about a foot long, but listen, they didn't sell them at Subway. and then a pretzel a foot long pretzel the photo looks pretty good uh auntie ann's is is an all time yeah good good partner and you're right that smell is going to be crazy yeah think about the smell of subway you love it i love it and then think about the smell of auntie ann's who who can hate it no one hates that if you go into an airport you smell that you're like i prefer mall auntie ann's yeah me too you're right rose shout out to roswell film mall auntie ann's the whole fucking food court smelled like Auntie Anne's.
43:49That's how powerful. So those Subway's going to be smelling crazy. I think this is intriguing. So I'm going to watch. We'll see how this all plays out for them. But also, does the same company own Cinnabon, Auntie Anne's, and Subway? Or does Subway own those other brands? I imagine they must. I'm sure it's a cesspool. Yeah, some parent company that owns that stuff. Well, guess what, Kevin? I'm excited for them. I'm excited for Subway. Maybe this is the year. Like I said, new year, new you. Sure. Cool. Speaking of New Year, New You, dry January. I would say a big thing. I've been doing it. I had one single drink.
44:25It's not dry. But listen, I'm human. I'm not perfect. You know, this happens. But I would say a lot of people still do dry January out there. It's been a big month for it. I think there's been more talk about people not drinking than ever before. And we got a story from the Dialine, the greatest packaging and design resource on the planet Earth. Dialine Awards still open, I believe. starting to get closer to the real deadlines. So put in your entries now for the best award in design, the big D. Beer mints is an idea from Miller Lite. It is essentially exactly what you think it is. It is beer flavored mints.
44:59So if you've been participating in Dry January and you miss the flavor of beer and you don't want to drink a beer, have an Altoid that's not an Altoid that is a mint that tastes a little bit like beer and says Miller Lite on the outside. I'm a Miller Lite fan. I would never say I wasn't a Miller Lite fan. They've done some great things that we've covered on the show, but this ain't it. Yeah, no. I don't know. Just have an N.A. beer. Give me like a Miller Lite N.A. Yeah. I would enjoy that. Yeah, I agree. But I don't know. I don't really give a shit about mints. They're just trying to kind of get in the conversation, which can't hate.
45:34We're talking about it. Yeah. That's all I got to say about that. Yeah, beer flavored mints. I agree. I don't necessarily want my mints to taste like beer, But sure, drink a non-alcoholic beer. And go for it. You know what I mean? Make beer. There's a way to drink beer without alcohol. Yeah. Or you could be happy drinking water. Yeah. Or you could be happy, maybe smoke some weed. Yeah. That's still dry. Whoa, Kevin. You're recommending drug use on our program? I mean, it's legal. That's fair. Don't do this. This is bad. Don't order this. Mischief, our favorite creative studio that puts things out in the world.
46:12at a rapid clip is back with not a necessarily new idea, but another edition of an idea they rolled out last year, which is perfumes that smell like everyday items. So if you remember, we talked about this maybe sometime in 2023, they put out WD-40 perfume. And it was sort of in this gorgeous packaging, and it had the Mischief logo, and it looked like a beautiful perfume, but it smelled like WD-40 for those people that love to grease handles. Yep. And so this time they're back with a new version, which has the smell of Fabuloso, which is all in purple, and it smells like a cleaning supplies. Yeah, I mean, I'm here for this one.
47:02I mean, they say it's$48 a piece, or you can do$96 for the bundle. Is that true? You get two bundles? I think you get both. You get WD-40 and the cleaner? Maybe you do either or or both. I don't know. I'm just$48 for smelling like Fabulous. It's kind of crazy. This one at least makes a little bit more sense scent-wise. That's a little pun right there for everybody. Makes sense. Smelling makes a little bit more sense in that regard. At least I think Fabulous smells good, where WD-40 doesn't smell good. I think people would disagree with you there. I think people like the smell of WD-40. Well, I think it's...
47:43I don't know. I think it's... People can like the smell, but it not be smell good. That's a personal preference. I kind of like the smell of WD-40, but I don't think it smells good. My brain just exploded. You like the smell, but you don't think it smells good? Do you think gasoline smells good? I do. Like, it smells good? Like, it smells. Yes. I think that's the point of this whole thing was like there are smells in everyday life that smell good that we don't that we appreciate like yeah popcorn butter buttered popcorn. I don't know why I said that backwards you know but you wouldn't want to spray it on your body as perfume.
48:23But that's why mischief is here to do. I keep it all natural. The next one should be yeah Orville Redenbacher. That should be the next perfume. I don't think you're too far off. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Shout out to mischief. I just generally don't love being perceived with a scent. You want to be all natural? Yeah, I'm all natural. I wear Schmitt's deodorant. It works. It works good enough. I like a little natural musk. But I did get, my friend's really into scents, and he gave me a bottle of something, like a little sample. He gave it to me at a bar this weekend, and it was like, maybe not.
48:56Is he trying to send you a message? No, he gave it to me. He's really into it. and like i indulge his you know little hobby or whatever um so i found it oh he makes them no no no he buys he gets samples and he's like he's sampling you know okay yeah yeah um so he gave it to me at a bar and like i guess it was like not all the way fastened so like it kind of like got on my shit like i had it like in my little zip wallet and i just like kept smelling it it's just like oh my god i cannot fucking stand this oh you don't like the smell it's bad no i i liked it when i was wearing it i liked it when it was subtle but then it was like i just felt like it was everywhere and it's still like on my jacket and you know on my shit a little bit yeah which is fine but i think i think you gotta go on your journey of finding the right smell for you you know and i think that's that's a whole part of uh perfume i'm not like i i have uh worn different colognes over the years and i think it's nice to smell nice i don't think it's like something i i do every single day but you know every now and you know i think smells nice natural pheromones Oh, there you go.
49:59Fucking primal, dude. There you go, primal. Yeah, yeah. You and Liver King, I guess. Damn right. I bet he smells crazy. He smells crazy. Dude. Fabuloso is owned by Colgate Palmolive, and I would imagine that... Here's the thing. Mischief isn't doing, you know, sort of partnerships with these brands, but I imagine this is good for those brands, unlike, like, Vans who sued Mischief. I don't know. I could see them doing a little partnership. Yeah, maybe. Maybe, maybe, maybe. Speaking of partnerships, Kevin, the next story, another one from the Dylon. Kevin, you're really heavily on the die line this week.
50:30Damn right. Birds, bees, and Hidden Valley Ranch are making a chapstick. It's a joint statement from both brands. This limited edition release capitalizes, quote, on a moment when lips are dry and wings of the traditional game day fair, which I'm going to be honest, they're not wrong there. This is a moment when lips, chap lips because of the weather and buffalo's wings because of football. So it does kind of suck to eat. wings with chapped lips. That's not a good combo. They're not wrong there. And so they've connected to create a collection, not just one, but three ranch dressing lip balms in the flavors of buffalo sauce, crunchy celery, and fresh carrots.
51:15And of course, oh, actually four flavors, sorry. And of course Hidden Valley Ranch dressing. So, wow. I'm a wings purist. Blue cheese only. Fuck out of here with this ranch bullshit. Kevin you bring up a great point Ranch is not for wings everyone knows that it's for babies and french fries if someone says hey I'll take an order of wings and they're like ranch or blue cheese and you pick ranch wrong answer they should say wrong unless you're outside of the typical classic sauce formats there's some wings where ranch oh you mean like maybe like a barbecue I mean even side probably do blue cheese but I would be a little bit more forgiving if it was like a honey bourbon something or other.
52:03Yeah. See, Kevin, I'm such a purist. I would still go blue cheese on all of those. No, I would go blue cheese on all of them as well, but I would be more forgiving of somebody who would go ranch on not the traditional buffalo sauce. Another place where you and I are different, I'm less forgiving. Blue cheese is great. There's a right answer and a wrong answer here, and the answer is blue cheese. so also fuck out of here in valley nobody wants your shitty ranch on their wings yeah and so and also trying to capitalize on wings you know essentially what you're doing and stay in your lane stay in your lane and also why do you got to bring bird's bees into this yeah this is a crazy collab like yeah bird's bees are you kidding like yeah i thought bird's i was under the impression that bird's bees is like kind of a natty yeah you know better for you better ingredients yeah Deodorant with no fucking chemicals.
52:54I use their toothpaste. Yeah, yeah. And it probably doesn't work because it's all natural. It is on the line of like, it's a little natty, but it's not natty enough to... Yeah, Kevin. You're not dispelling this high-end sort of Kevin picture that I'm painting here. You got the Burt's Bees natural toothpaste. You got the natural deodorant. You got the high-end orange juice. I'm a natty boy. Yeah, I mean, I stick to the classics. Keep it natural. Colgate, Tropicana, Old Spice, baby. That's real. That's everyday stuff. Keep it classic. That's just me. Listen, you and I are different. I just don't want aluminum on my person.
53:36That's where, again, we disagree. Give me all the aluminum. Try to turn it into fucking Iron Man over here. That's fair. Yeah, I mean, listen. I think this is like, what's interesting is like, the Dye Line says this is like, it leans into the gross out trend. like I'm so like numb to this that I don't even think it's that gross like an idea of a chapstick that tastes like ranch dressing is that that gross I guess it is but I mean the other one has celery it's gross but like it's gross for the wrong reasons buffalo sauce I don't know do you want like a gross chapstick I feel like no yeah I feel like you want a nice chapstick yeah listen I feel like you want uh Applebee's wing lip gloss right right that's the that's the real that's the good one i got a i got a little better shout out for the show um lucas pawpaw ointment pawpaw ointment like the fruit in the red fucking vial let me see it is the only way to fucking treat chap lips and i i i fucking recommend it to everybody out there it's i believe it's from australia okay um so you know it's you know it's good it's that shit in the winter time carry that shit around you and it's soft salt like most chapstick in my opinion makes your lips more chapped and so if you break out the Hidden Valley Ranch chapstick at you know at the fucking Super Bowl party you know again you want to know what chapstick I use what do you use Kev some shit I bought from the guy I buy honey from see this is again man artisanal kept I'm a natty boy yeah dude you're just so fucking farm to table man you're just so artisanal you get your fucking honey you have a honey guy i've got a honey guy at the farmer's market kevin doesn't even fucking buy his honey at the store man this guy buys it better got a guy it's better and cheaper at the farmer's market he's got a fucking guy he's you know fucking what you know where do you get your ketchup from you know some you know heinz i don't need a lot of ketchup oh man too many too much sugar yeah exactly you think you know someone i thought you know all that red 40 what happens when you go back to Cincinnati.
55:42Oh, all the red 40. Jesus Christ. I'm not like, I'm not, I'm not out here, you know, being a fucking hard ass about it. There is some stuff I indulge in, but like, yeah, I don't know. I like avoiding some stuff and I like supporting fucking farmers, dude. I like supporting the little farmers. I'm not out here supporting big honey. I'm just fucking with you. I'm supporting small. Yeah. New York farms. Dude, I'm all about that big honey. Yeah. I'm all about supporting those big corporations. It helps your biome when you eat honey from the region you live in. Yeah. That's just a scientific fact. Dude, Kevin, when do you start putting bees in the backyard, dude?
56:19Dude, I mean, listen, I'm one DraftKings parlay away from that. Dude, Kevin in the beekeeper suit making his own money in the backyard. Yeah, why do you think I'm gambling so hard? I'm trying to get my money up, dude. 2024, I said I'm getting my money up. for what? Bees in the backyard. Bees in the backyard. Bees in the trap. They say beekeeping is one of those jobs that like, I don't know, I guess they may be called like a blue zone job. That the life expectancy of those people who have that profession is way up because of the healing frequencies of the bees. See, I brought it up as a joke and now here it is, Kevin going on.
57:01I'm a natty boy. On his beekeeper shit. Well, Kevin, that feels like a good place end the show. Thanks for all of you that listen. Kevin, good to see you. I'll see you next week unless it snows and you want to take another sick day. I'll be back. Peace. I got to be back for the championships on Sunday. Priorities are in order. But after that, who knows? Who knows?
57:35I'm in a typical world. Typical. Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, gangsta. Honey, honey, see me. Behind my game, boy, I got game, girl, it comes easy. Let go your shoulders, my popsicle is so sweet, sit. Turn back that sports, don't hesitate, and you'll believe me. Yeah, bitch, believe me. Yeah. Bump, bump, bump. Bump, bump, bump, bump. Bump, bump, bump. Bump, bump, bump. Bump, bump. There you go. There you go. That's what I'm talking about.
