In short

The hosts riff on pop culture and branding/design news, centered on “specs” (wearable tech glasses) and major viral incidents: “Philly Poop Gate” at a Noah Kahan concert, Knicks championship fallout (including bootleg merch and a Ben Stiller “ripped” moment), and World Cup marketing/bootlegs.

Guests

No named guests appear; it’s just two hosts (Kevin and the other co-host).

Guest backgrounds

Kevin is a branding/design-industry attendee who mentions being a two-time winning Cannes Lions copywriter (2021, Zoom year). The other host is also in branding/design culture and discusses World Cup/merch/design critiques.

Key claims

Snapchat’s $2,000 AR glasses rollout went viral because Evan Spielberg’s ears looked crushed by the chunky frames; Meta’s Ray-Ban/Kylie glasses look better but still raise privacy concerns. The “Poop Gate” incident became a major story because of a viral video and Noah Kahan’s response.

Notable examples

“Philly Poop Gate” (someone defecated on the floor); JP Morgan trash-can theft and return; Ben Stiller’s jacked arm; Messi’s phallic World Cup trophy statue; Gillette logo coverage; bootleg jerseys and fake Messi statue; World Cup kit design complaints (US back stripes).

0:00Caffeine. 100 milligrams of caffeine.

0:02Kevin:Damn. That's kind of a lot, I think. I don't know. Good luck getting asleep tonight. Yeah, 100%. Or at least it'll keep you at a REM. It's really good, though. I'll have to try one in the morning. Yeah. For the perfect lift with no crash. This is a great option. I'm a fan. But maybe I don't need that much caffeine at 5 o 'clock at night. Yeah, breaking the fourth wall already. Not even into the regular show. Yeah. I mean, that's this is this is we're going to learn how to podcast one of these days. I'm going to learn how to podcast. That'd be good. I mean, why? Why start now? Oh, all right. My back hurts.

0:45From carrying the show.

0:52Three, two, one. Kevin. Hey, what's up, buddy? Your back hurts from carrying the show? Yeah, it's killing me, dude.

1:01Kevin:Yeah, dang. It's got these spasms, man. How are you, buddy? I'm all right, yeah. How was the Noah Kahan concert in Philadelphia?

1:16Kevin:It was all right. It was all right, yeah. Anything notable to share? Yeah, I had to leave a little early. Stomach issues? It's got to be like an accident. There's no way somebody's like, oh, I can't miss this stomp clap bullshit. I can't. Yeah, stick season. I can't miss it. It's my favorite song. Oh, stick, you're familiar? I actually watched an entire documentary. Where were you? On Netflix. Where were you during Poop Gate? I just love how big of a story this got. Like I tend to think why is this such a big story? Maybe that's my bigger question. Can you, can you help me understand? Cause I think he addressed, I think it's cause he addressed it.

2:01Kevin:Yeah. He put out a tweet. And also it's just like the, the video went crazy, which obviously there was a video. There is a video. There's like a Tik TOK or something that like, okay. Somebody's like, are you fucking kidding me? And they panned to the shit on the floor. Got it. So, so yeah, that's the, that's poop gate, uh, 20 Philly poop gate, 20, 26. is somebody could not make it to the bathroom at the Noah Kahn concert. Unfortunately, relieved themselves on the floor. If you're a new listener to Front and Center, yeah, this is the first story we're starting the show with. Yeah. Poop gate. I mean, I really hope it was just somebody, you know, maybe they had...

2:39Kevin:What do you hope, Kevin? I just hope it wasn't, you know, out of, I need to see this concert. I can't, you know, I can't leave. I can't leave. I hope it was just like, oh man, that concession stand sushi made some things go haywire. Again, I don't want to make this all about me and the Knicks because we've been talking about the Knicks for three straight weeks. But there was a point at the parade where I was so deep in that I guess if I had a stomach situation, there was no bathroom to be gotten to. You should have been diped up. There were people there that were wearing diapers, peeing in their pants.

3:15Kevin:Listen, it's something that you have to do in these New York City crowds. I've always talked about it for the hot dog eating contest. Yeah, 4th of July. Although my hydration strategy has always been pretty dialed, so I don't really need to do that. Yeah. Yeah, it is coming up. It's this weekend. Oh, shit. That's right. Are you going? I'm not feeling it this year, to be honest. Whoa, whoa. I think my problem is like last year I got the hat, and that was kind of like the last, It was kind of like the last box I wanted to check. I still am into the - He got the hat and it was nothing left to do.

3:51Kevin:Well, also there's like, I think Joey Chestnut's a bit controversial this year. Is he in or out? He's in, but he got arrested and he assaulted somebody allegedly. Wait, what? There was an alleged assault in Indiana where he was blackout drunk. Oh. That doesn't really have anything to do with why I'm not going personally. Pleading guilty to a misdemeanor battery in April after slapping a man at Joe's Grill in Westfield, Indiana. Yeah. I mean, that's not why I'm not going. Interesting. I don't know. I'm just not feeling it this year. That's fair. Listen. I feel like June kicked my ass. I feel like June usually kind of fucks me up a little bit.

4:32Kevin:But I'm going to take this weekend and chill. and no you don't need to yeah sort of fight through the crowds to watch joey chestnut eat lots of dogs and record high temperatures here in new york so i mean it would make it it is kind of like that is kind of the cool thing is like you go and you like you endure this crazy heat because it was really hot last year and you know unfortunately i did see some people hit the deck which is kind of scary but it's also like you know i'm him like i'm built different i can i can withstand this New York City heat and stand and persevere and perspire and hang in there.

5:09Kevin:But yeah, I don't know. This year, I'm just kind of going for a chill-ass 4th of July weekend. Yeah. I'm going to hit the beach as many times as I can. There you go, Kevin. There you go. It's a young man's sport crowd. I hate to sound like an old guy, but when I was at the parade, I did have a moment where I was like, I don't know that I like being squished like this at this point in my life, and I'm not sure that I have to. And I don't know why. I just didn't – it wasn't something that I was going to subject myself to again in the near future, even though it was one of the great days of my life.

5:43Yeah, sometimes you've got to endure, though. Sometimes.

5:44Kevin:I feel like with the Knicks, specifically that parade. No regrets, but also it's just a lot of – it was just very tight crowds. You'll skip it next year. I'll skip it. You'll skip the championship parade next year. One time is enough. And I think watching that Travis Scott documentary, those people getting crushed at the concert, maybe altered my brain a little bit to where I'm a little afraid to be in tight quarters where people are pushing me in and get it's getting a little hot in there. And I don't know. I just don't need it. But it did look like a fucking nightmare. Like some of the footage I saw, like it was, you know, crowds, lines backed up into the subway platform.

6:20Kevin:Yeah, pretty. right um but yeah but back to noah kahan like so there was a tick tock about this and then noah was like i'm gonna put out a statement about this sort of thing being like don't do this he's funny he's a funny guy that is he funny that's part of his appeal is that he's a he's humorous he's a sort of every man he's from the sticks of vermont and so okay he's from vermont yeah exactly and that's kind of his brand he's like yeah he's like a he's he's a self-deprecating uh humorist that makes uh sort of the shittiest music on earth the world's worst kind of like you know banjo i actually don't really know i haven't really listened to very much i the only the only little snippet i've heard is during the video where they're where the poop reveal happens that was the first time that's the only time i've ever heard his music wow that's hilarious yeah i mean i wanted to like try to understand what his appeal was.

7:14And I watched his documentary and it seems like, yeah, he, he, he grew up with some, you know, some childhood trauma in the form of parents getting divorced and wrote music about him. And like, now he's like a pro mental health advocate and he seems like a good dude. Like just seems like a nice guy. And like, but the music isn't for me and he seems lovely, but I just don't totally get it after watching an hour and a half documentary is basically a commercial about him.

7:38Kevin:I was, I was stomping and clapping so much that She just fell out of my drawers. The poop came out. Just rolled out. Yeah. I mean, listen, I heard this was a woman, which was a plot twist of the century. Oh, wow. I did not know that. I really hope that for her sake, they don't identify her. Yeah, again. Yeah, actually. They might have already identified her, but I think - Yeah. I kind of feel bad for whoever this is. I feel like bad things happen at concerts or the lights are down and maybe you had a couple too many drinks. It's just like - Yeah. Who among us? Yeah, exactly. Who hasn't been there?

8:13Who hasn't pooped on the ground at a concert? So just like don't blow up the spot. You know, kind of just like keep – This can't be the worst thing to happen at a festival, right? This guy would be way worse. It's hilarious.

8:25Kevin:It's hilarious, but I feel like it's kind of like – At least nobody slipped on it. That's fair. I mean just like don't make it a big thing. Don't make it a thing. Nobody docks her. He made it a thing. Yeah, we don't need to know about this person. Just let it be. But if she does get doxxed, then I bet she'll be an influencer. They'll be making AI videos like the woman that fucking got caught with the Nick's garbage can. You know what I mean? That fucking poor woman. Yeah, that's tough. I feel bad for her too, right? I get it. The garbage can was kind of sick. Definitely. People were saying online, oh, people are going to steal this.

8:56And then she stole one and then we all fucking made fun of her.

9:00Kevin:Yeah. I mean, listen, the clip of her dumping the trash onto the street on the sidewalk, it's a really bad clip. I wouldn't personally do it myself. No. At least turn away from the camera. People are wilding out for the Knicks. And there's been an enormous amount of grace for everybody wilding out. Yeah, we should give this woman some grace. Yeah, we should give this woman some grace. Both the Nocahan woman and the J.P. Morgan woman. Come on, cut these women's back. Especially since she lost her job as an executive at J.P. Morgan for stealing a trash can, which, I don't know, kind of lame. I don't think you should lose your job for that.

9:35So it didn't ruin JP Morgan's reputation. You know what I mean?

9:39Kevin:So she lost her job and she returned the trash can. And then NY Sanitation started giving them out for free. Oh, like sweepstakes. Yeah, I saw that they were sort of doing a sweepstakes. She returned the trash can and she should get her job back. I know. I think you either get the trash can or you have your job. And if you return the trash can, you make it right and keep the job. I agree completely. Also, did you see the AI videos of Jalen Brunson picking her up and like putting her into a garbage truck. Like that's fucking crazy. Like she's just a regular person. She made a mistake. Like let's not AI videos.

10:12Kevin:I know we all get wrapped up and want to steal stuff. In the moment. Which I think it's totally fair. Yeah. For those people out there that do want a trash can though, you can buy one from only New York. But the truth is it's miniature. So you get either the sort of miniature, like the real trash can is like, you know, fucking six foot tall. It's a proper trash can. Yeah, whatever. Not six foot tall, but three foot tall. Three and a half, yeah. But you can get like a two foot tall one for your office or you can get the pen holder, which is the one that I got. Yeah. So that's great. Yeah. I'll probably get in November long after I've forgotten about all of these trash cans.

10:46Yeah. I mean, not the feeling of the championship.

10:48Kevin:I hope neither of these things happen to me. I don't think I could ever see myself emptying out a trash can on the street and stealing it. You would not do that. You know, I don't I don't know. Yeah. People do crazy things when their team wins when their teams win championships. and you know let's just have some grace for this woman and i know that you know people she's been getting roasted so yeah let's have some grace you know heart goes out to her i hope she's able to you know pick herself up and dust herself off and get another executive job i guess yeah yeah sad she did pour a significant amount of garbage it was a full can it was crazy it actually illuminated how much garbage is in a garbage can to me which you don't really think about that i I mean, it looked to be past capacity, which it's a shitty thing to do.

11:37Kevin:Yeah. 100%. It's bad. Don't dump out trash cans. It's bad, but yeah. These poor people. It's just tough optics on both of these opening stories here. Yes, for sure. And hark is out to them. Yeah, we feel for that. Sometimes you make a mistake. Yes. But yeah, Kevin, while these big stories were happening, we were at our team's offsite going upstate. You were, you know, sort of swimming in pools like we do eat ribs. Kevin made a million ribs, more ribs than I've ever seen in one location. We watched the World Cup. I did not catch World Cup fever. I tried. I really tried. And I thought you I thought you had it.

12:18Kevin:I thought you were there. You watched a lot of it. I tried. I mean, I really wanted to, you know, obviously five billion people are watching this. There must be something enjoyable about this. And now that the Knicks are champions of the world and the Mets are the worst team in baseball, I need something other than Love Island and the World Cup. I just it's just so slow and boring. You just I think you got to just catch one good game. Yeah. In the US, they lost the Turkey in the last second. They played the backups. They played the scrubs. Whatever. So I didn't really I didn't get a good representation of USA soccer.

12:51So I'm going to watch again this week.

12:53Kevin:The two previous games were pretty good. OK, that's the thing. I'm sure Wednesday night is going to be fire. That's what I'm saying. Wednesday night. Knockout. I'm going to watch that. If we win that game and then we win another game, then this nation. One game at a time. One game at a time. How was Cannes, Kevin? How was your time in Sunset? I wish I went. I'm hating from outside the club, though. You're hating from outside the Collins house. I am hating from outside the Collins house. I can't even get in. Collins house looks amazing. Kevin, should we tell the people that you are a two-time winning Cannes copywriter?

13:24You have two lions. Is that true?

13:26Kevin:Yes, of course it's true. What do you mean? Oh, no. Yeah, you have two lions. Breaking news. We won them in 2021. I'm here to remind people. Oh, yeah. All right. Never forget. Never forget that we won two can lions the only year that it happened on Zoom. Yeah, that kind of sucks. That definitely sucked. What do you mean? That was fucking awful. And I told myself I wouldn't go back. But if someone invites me. Go back to move forward. I said I wouldn't go back until we won again. because you know when we did that and i was complaining about winning and it happening on zoom everyone's like don't worry you'll win again yeah i was like i don't want to have to fucking win again what do you mean we won two now that's true fucking covid all right we should have a parade you know what the thing was it was covid so they didn't have the show in 2020 they didn't have the show in 2021 it was a year it was a year later they could have had the fucking can why we would have been out there on yachts drinking rose could have been us kevin could have been us.

14:18But yeah, unfortunately, we haven't won any. There's always next year. There's always next year. But shout out to Jordan Esteban, sort of fans, friends of the show. They cleaned up.

14:29Kevin:Dude, they won like all the cans. They won all the lines. They won the Grand Prix for Your Way Out, which is, we can all agree, an absolute banger. They also won for Everybody Coinbase, which made everyone sing the Backstreet Boys at the Super Bowl. All right. Remember that? Yeah. My party sang. So those guys are brilliant, and I love to see them. collecting trophies and getting their flowers. Absolutely. Just. And getting fits off. Oh my God. Shout out to Jordan's white alligator boots. Getting. They may or may not have been alligator, but they were white. They're getting incredible fits off in Cannes.

15:00And that's, I think the right place. Of course. That's the right way to do it. That's what you should be doing. If you're going to go there and, you know, listen, someone invite me to go on your panel. That's what I'm saying. That's why I'm, I'm just pleading for. Let me,

15:11Kevin:let me get up inside of that house. Let me, let me stay in a spare bedroom. Let me sleep on the couch at the Collins house. Dude, let me paddle, man. I'm ready to paddle. But yeah, it looked cool. I did have a little bit of FOMO. And yeah, it looks like a good time. I mean, shit, dude. Hanging out in France. Yeah. That's awesome. Sure. Yeah, let's do it. I'm here for it. And I'm jealous. But yeah, we got jobs to do, Kevin. And we have a podcast that people need to know about what's going on in the world of branding and design and culture. And that is our duty to the people. What's going on? Ben Stiller really ripped remember that well yeah that what happened there so what happened is we got we kind of lost the train where it was like a little bit of a continuous line here we're gonna go next we're gonna do like next championship cleanup but that's okay we can we can run it and we can run it in random order oh yeah sorry Kevin I broke your producing uh sort of no it's okay um it was supposed to go trash can uh and then it was like oh did you see what else came out of the New York Knicks championship run is people realized Ben Stiller is ripped and he's been ripped.

16:19Some behind the scenes here for you guys. You can see how Kevin -

16:21Kevin:Yeah, this is how the sausage is made. He visualizes the show in his head before the show happens. I visualized it in Google Docs. He really produced it. But yeah, so Ben Stiller is super jacked. Do you know who also is jacked? I saw a video today, sort of Mark Cuban. Oh, really? Yeah, I saw a video of him. He was shooting around. He should be fucking. He's a billionaire with like - Exactly. Time to burn. Yeah. And unlimited gyms. Yeah. And all he does is go and spend time with professional athletes. Yeah. And he probably has access to the best steroids money could buy. For sure. He's probably on TRT and all that.

16:54Kevin:100%. Maybe, allegedly. Do you think Ben Stiller is on the juice? I think he might be natty. You think that arm is natural though? Yeah. He's been – He's been – Had a good physique. Like White Goodman. Literally every character he's played is like – I mean he's – Ben Stiller's been in shape. It's not new. Five foot three. That's how tall Ben Stiller is? Yeah. No way. Are you serious? Yeah, yeah. That's what the internet is saying. Five foot three? No way. Yeah. He doesn't seem to be a giant guy. Five foot three, though? That's... I'm a short king? I mean, salute to him. But that muscle, yeah. The photo...

17:32So the photo came out during the Knicks game, and he's obviously been in every game. He's doing an A24 documentary about the Knicks franchise of all time. Oh, wow. And I assume it's going to leave.

Read the full transcript

17:41Kevin:And he's doing the HBO one on his phone? No, that's the same one. Oh, okay. It's an A24 Knicks documentary about the history of the Knicks. Yeah. And he's recording the current – I imagine it's not all on his phone. I hope not. I hope it is. That's fire. We record all our stuff here on our phones. Yeah, just like Ben Stiller. Yeah, just like Ben Stiller for real. Ripped recording on phones. Great director. We're just like him for real. We are. so yeah they this was sort of became a moment online where Ben Stiller's like arm became part of the story of how jacked he is and so Stiller's is the soda shout out to the good folks at Gander and so they're using this moment to try to promote the soda good for them yeah I mean he's ripped yeah for sure I want to be like Ben you do I mean he seems he seems like he's living his best life I can't say.

18:32I mean, I think this is a natural trajectory of man where you get to your 50s and 60s and then you decide that incredibly jacked. He's been incredibly jacked.

18:45Kevin:Then I'm just projecting what I want to do. Look at the archives. I want to be the best shape of my life at 55. He was so ripped in Dodgeball as White Goodman. Yeah, you're right. You're right. Yeah. Speaking of, did you see Will Ferrell for Skims? I did see that. It's good to see him coming on and getting the mix a little bit more now. Will Ferrell? Yeah. I mean, I guess he has been. I just haven't really seen him. Yeah, I guess you're right. He's been kind of a little. I mean, I don't know how old Will Ferrell is, but he's got to be in his 60s now. That feels like a problem. I feel like he's given us enough.

19:18Kevin:Yeah, definitely. I feel like we can let this man kind of just enjoy his life for a little bit. For sure. He's back in a Netflix show where he plays a washed up golfer. Lonnie Hawkins is the name. Great name. Hawk. And so I guess he plays a John Daly kind of golfer, post-career. The puka shell necklace in the tan line was pretty fire. It was a great look. The styling is pretty spectacular. Yes. And so to promote this, I guess they got skims. They convinced Kim to sort of use their brand as a promo sort of partnership sort of moment. I don't know if I like that for her. It just kind of takes away all the...

20:05I'm not saying that Skims has to be the most serious brand on planet Earth, but it just feels like... I don't know. How much does Netflix pay Kim to basically use her brand to do promo for a Netflix movie? Do you get what I'm saying here? No. It's moneying the waters. The Skims brand sort of had a prestige effect to it, and now I know it could just be bought.

20:31Kevin:I don't know. Funny video. Go burr. I'm all right with it. I don't love it. It's kind of like LeBron we were talking about earlier, like LeBron deciding to sort of end his career at some random team. We don't know which one yet, but I feel like that's bad for the brand overall in the history of time. He'll be all right. Skims. Kim will be all right. LeBron will be all right. I wouldn't worry about him. Yeah, I guess. They always tend to land on their feet with their billions of dollars. Yeah. His body says retire, a voice says, as Pharrell puts it on the Skims branded golf gloves. So they're doing like golf gloves and I don't know.

21:07I did see that Hypebeast just launched Hype Golf. Golfing has become like a hype.

21:12Kevin:Golf's now hype. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. How do you feel about that, Kevin? I feel like it's been hype. I don't know. We're just sitting outside of it. You ever hear of metalwood? Yeah, I have a belt. It's a good brand. I wear a belt almost every - That's a hype golf brand. I do like that. I just like the belt, and I do like the brand. I'd be good at golf if I played. You were saying this the other day, and we were driving back from the offsite. You were saying that maybe there was a golf future for you. Yeah, I just don't have the time or the resources at this current moment. I could see you getting fits off on a golf course, though.

21:42For sure, yeah. I think your brand and golf - Definitely.

21:46Kevin:I'd be hitting those like late 90s, early 2000s Tiger Woods fits. You know, baggy polos, pleated pants. I could see that for you. Yeah. I could see this for you. I wouldn't be wearing those fucking shitty plastic Nike collared shirts that everybody in the South wears. Mm-hmm. Yeah. I'd be pimping it a little bit. I could see it. I could see this for you, Kevin. Yeah, no golf for me yet. I still have other – I still got other shit to do. Yeah, you're a young man. Not like LeBron James, who is sort of eyeing the golf from his day job. Dreaming of golf. Well, yeah. That's my skiing. That's your skiing.

22:28Kevin:Exactly. You have only so much room in your life for so many of these extra - In my life, I'm a lot. For these extra-curricular activities. But, yeah, listen, I want that for you, Kevin. I want that. Oh, thanks. I just think it feels on brand. Yeah, I love sports. Yeah. What can I say? But also you like chilling and you also like getting fits off. So I feel like all these three things kind of work together. I like hitting balls. There you go. Yeah. All the stuff. It could all be for you. Definitely. You know what you also like, Kevin? The World Cup. Glasses. Oh, shit. I was going to go to glasses.

23:02Do you want to talk about the World Cup promos and stuff like that? I mean, Kevin, in the doc you say soccer is kind of cool.

23:10Kevin:Yeah, soccer is kind of cool. You're my power rankings of whom I'm rooting for. So who are your power rankings? Here's my power rankings. Yeah, hit me. At number one, obviously, got to root for my boys, the U.S. Okay. And then in the next tier of people I'm rooting for, we got Colombia. Ooh. Watch them play Portugal on Saturday night. Ooh. Very fire. The way they were moving the ball, the way they were running around. Okay. Had to be pretty excited. They play an exciting brand of soccer. Exciting. Ooh, shit. Congo is your third. Oh, yeah. Yeah, Congo. Those fans are going crazy. They're wearing those big-ass party city sunglasses.

23:48Kevin:Very fire. They're having a good time. And they had a couple sick goals against whoever they were playing on Saturday night. And then, you know, got to root for Ecuador. Got some homies. Where's Brazil? Brazil on top of maybe the five? Who cares? I don't really care that much about Brazil. Democratic Republic of the Congo. Congo's fire, though. I feel like they got that guy who stands still for the entire match to honor their fallen president. I'm really unfamiliar. Is it a guy that stands still? Yeah, he stands still like a statue with his hand up. Oh, shit. Yeah. What? They just got good vibes.

24:24Fucking sick suit, too, on this guy.

24:26Kevin:For sure. Wow. Yeah, I was looking at some of the kits. I don't love America's kit. No. I feel like we need to do better. We are a design podcast. We can talk about that. I don't mind the stripes. I just, it just, yeah. I feel like the back is really, really bad. It's rough. I could, I could, I could live with the weird stripes on the front. Yeah. If they like did something that wasn't just plain white on the back. It just seems like they, they gave up or like, I'm sure it's for like, you know, visibility and like regulation, whatever. Yeah. But like, there's gotta be something there's, there's something that could have been done, you know?

25:02Kevin:Yeah. To get the names and numbers on there. There's probably some legibility thing. And I just wish those stripes weren't quite as gradients. Yeah, I just want them to be flatter. There's too much going on. Yeah, I feel like we should be more of an iconic kit type. They feel a little trendy. Yeah, sure. I think they look kind of cool on fans, though, I guess, in some ways. I don't know. I see them, and if I was a World Cup guy, which I'm not, I could see myself getting excited about buying one of those. Yeah, I mean, there's a lot of real good stuff going on, merch-wise, like from the World Cup, a lot of good collabs.

25:40Kevin:There's a lot of Kid Super and McDonald's collab, which I was kind of confused about, which was pretty cool, but didn't make the show. I don't know. Everyone's doing some sort of cool shit with the World Cup. It's the biggest event brand. But you know what I'm more focused on is the boots. It's bootleg summer here in New York. Ooh, what kind of bootlegs are you seeing? Dude, I mean, the Knicks, obviously, number one. Incredible. Great boots. Incredible. And then number two is, I mean, I've been seeing a lot of World Cup boots. I saw them on my way into there. Interesting. Saw somebody just posted up outside on Fulton just, you know.

26:15Kevin:Just selling fake shirts. I know. I've heard of some places selling some bootleg jerseys. I like this, Kevin. This is a good, I'm here for the boots. Do you think the Knicks winning a championship and the bootleggers just making money hand over fist is going to inspire more bootleg merchandise to be sold on the streets of New York City? I hope so. I hope so. You know, Fanatics is just in such disarray. And I don't know if they're making this merch, but they may or may not be. But they've opened up the door. Interesting. Because if they were on top of their shit and they were churning things out and they were getting things and making well-made pieces of clothing.

27:02I like this theory. I like this theory.

27:05Kevin:The boot market would be there. It's always there. Of course. Would it be so prevalent? I don't know. It's a good theory that if Fanatics was on their shit and making quality garments and good designs for teams and for events like the Knicks Championship, maybe the bootleggers wouldn't be able to make better things. Or maybe the appetite for the bootleggers wouldn't be quite so high. And because Fanatics is fucking it up left and right, you might as well get the bootlegs because they're just as good. It's not better. Definitely. I like that. And I'm happy for the bootleggers. Me too. I love a bootleg.

27:41Kevin:Yeah. You love a bootleg shirt. Obviously. One of my favorite shirts of all time, you got me, is my DMX funeral bootleg. That shit goes so hard. So, yeah, I got a Knicks finals bootleg. I'm very happy about it. Yeah. I almost wore it today, to be completely honest. Did you see the messy statue? Oh, my God. The messy statue is so good. He's bouncing on the World Cup. They had to know. Like, I'm sorry. Like, I'm calling bullshit. Like, I've said this on this show so many times. They knew that this was going to be mocked endlessly on the internet. There's just no way you put a World Cup trophy looking as phallic as it does between this man's legs while he's bending over as a statue without someone saying this is going to make people talk about it online.

28:30Yeah.

28:31Kevin:I don't know. Allegedly. They have to be. Allegedly, the guy was in a big rush or something. I'm trying to finish it. It was a big rush building a 70-foot statue of Messi? How is that fucking possible? I don't know. It could just be out of the love of the game. From what I read, I think it's unsanctioned. I don't think Messi was a part of it, or I don't think anyone with any sort of authority was like, yeah, let's make this. I think the guy just erected it. It's a bootleg statue? Yeah, I think it's a bootleg statue. Someone erected a bootleg Messi statue? In Argentina? Like, what the fuck? It's so crazy.

29:10Kevin:It's a very remote town. I mean, I guess then maybe then that only reinforces and supports my argument that they knew that this was going to be a lightning rod for drama and for humor and for this is going to go viral. I know. I mean, they should have just painted pants on him. That's the easy fix. That's not the fix. The fix is don't put the World Cup trophy between this man's legs and have him bend over it. Maybe he was supposed to be holding it, but they couldn't get it in time. I mean, it's an insane statue. It's insane. But I like that it's a rogue statue. I didn't know that. Which makes it kind of funnier, but what a legend messy is.

29:51It reminds me, did you see this Supergirl popcorn cup? Have you seen this? Oh, yeah.

29:56Kevin:I did see that. They have to know. They have to know. You can't put a flesh colored jacket on a fucking popcorn cup and roll that out there and think. In that proportion. No, no, no, no, no. I'm sorry. I'm calling bullshit. I see what you're doing out there, fucking movie companies. Listen, they got us. They got you. Yeah. We got got. We're talking about it. We're talking about, but apparently that movie is done terribly. Did you see that Jonah Hill made a movie that like some streaming service deemed unreleasable? What? Like they just canned his movie that he put out. It's like him and Kristen Wiig or something.

30:33And they said it was unreleasable. How bad must a movie be to not be releasable in 2026? Literally anything is releasable.

30:41Kevin:I know. Damn. So I'm kind of like, now I kind of want to see it. Now I'm like, is that promo? Damn. Is that promo for this movie that it's unreleasable? Oh my God. Because it's so bad. You might be onto something. See, that's what I'm saying. I got my third eye open to all these fucking flesh colored fucking popcorn. It's all promo. it's all it's all one big promo damn speaking of uh the logos need to be covered up at the world cup we talked about this uh levi's did a fucking brilliant one and now this gillette one is this real did we find out this was real or not or no i think i think it's real i yeah it's brilliant i believe it's real yeah you got to cover up your logo so cover it up with you covered up with shaving through some shaving cream on it yeah i saw some stuff on twitter about how they They had to cover up every single seat.

31:26Kevin:Every single seat at Gillette has kind of like a branded number plate on it. This is like Gillette Stadium or something. It has some reference to Gillette Stadium or some shit. But they had to cover every single one of them up with tape. That's ridiculous. Which is so crazy. I don't know. FIFA's got to chill. I guess I do kind of get it. It's funny. When we talked about it on the show last week, I was kind of like, oh, FIBA, they should just let these companies, you know. but they got money to make a lot of money and uh you gotta you know every time a logo pops up on the screen of the world cup match it's fucking money to be made you gotta pay to play you gotta you gotta cover up those logos no free ads no free ads no fucking free ads but yeah i'm i gotta i'm still waiting to get the world cup fever um heinz did something very smart where they covered up their logo on their packaging.

32:18Kevin:I guess. I don't, is that like, it just seems like a, oh, look at, look at how we're getting in the mix too. You know who wants to go back to Cannes next year? Heinz. Heinz. That's what they're fucking doing. They're like, they need a seat at the, at the Collins house. They're like, yo, we really, we want to be on, we want to be out there drinking Rose. No, honestly, I don't, I don't think Brian Collins would have them. I don't think it's a, I don't think they're not really pushing the envelope very much. You know what he did? I did actually see some good clip on, on, on LinkedIn from Collins house.

32:46And it was with the, whatever shit,

32:48Kevin:what show were you on breaking and entering breaking entering is with those guys. Yeah. Those guys are killing it. Brian was like, Oh yeah. Like you're really going to fly across the Atlantic ocean to say like, we need more humanity and AI. And I was like, yeah, good point. Yeah. I mean, Brian, listen, I mean, all of it looks great. I'm, I'm, I'm totally here for it. And like, honestly, this is a design podcast we should say to them like kudos to them for making a moment in our industry sort of I feel like they dominated a lot of the conversation obviously a lot of what I get fed on my feeds is from designers so of course like they're going to Cannes and think you know posting stuff about design or so than advertising but like of course there was like Spotify House and Adweek House and all the stuff but like I saw Colin's House like as the go-to destination of Cannes and so that's fucking sick for a design agency to like dominate the conversation and have like a fucking sick house with seal there and will.i.am like that's crazy they had fucking seal just from a rose man wow yeah the seal that's a that's quite a get yeah huge you know it's quite a get polymarket got Rick Rubin oh my god which I regret to inform you goes incredibly hard I have to say it yeah yeah I got mixed feelings about this one yeah people don't like prediction market brands I get like that's the main thing right yeah no it's fair I think it's fair yeah and you Do you fall into that camp, Kev?

34:10Kevin:I mean, I don't participate in prediction markets. Me neither. But do you think they're evil? I feel like there's a lot of people that are like, these are evil. I don't know. I think there's potential. I don't know if you should be able to bet on what the weather is going to be. It seems a bit. But I guess people are doing it. I mean, I guess if you have a problem with gambling generally, I think there's an argument to be made. I don't think that sports gambling or any other gambling is particularly good for society in any way. But I don't know. Again, this is a very uninformed position here. But I don't know that Kalshi and Polymarket are the devil for making people able to bet on the Oscars or something or politics or other things.

34:59Maybe there should be some regulation on what you can and what you can on that sort of game law.

35:03Kevin:I think there needs to be some regulation on who they're putting in these commercials. I'm pretty surprised they got Rick Rubin. I mean, obviously, he is sort of a creative guru. Yeah, I wonder what the bag was like for him. Yeah, I think that's the thing. It's like Rick Rubin got that money. It does seem perhaps a bit off-brand. But I did think that the combination of Rick Rubin, Runaway by Kanye West, Future, some giant flags, and some cool art direction. Yeah, I mean, it's a good commercial. It spoke to me. He spoke to me as a Kanye West apologist for most of my life. Retired. Retired Kanye West apologist.

35:43Yeah. Runaway. Just one of those songs.

35:45Kevin:That's a good song. Yeah. And he's still doing concerts, which I think is confusing to me. Also, another thing that I found out this week, there's an artist named Don Tolliver that I did not know about that apparently is the number one artist in the world. Have you seen any clips from concerts or things? No. Yeah. Apparently people really like that guy. I was not aware of him. Wow. So shout out to Don Tolliver. Someone who, oh, popped up on my feed and somehow is very famous. They have like millions of followers and almost like hundreds of people that I know follow him. And sounds like, I guess he's kind of a Kanye West, Travis Scott disciple.

36:20That's kind of the vibe I get from him. It's like R &B rap guy. Sure. No idea. Sure. No clue. What else we got to talk about? Glasses. Oh, fuck. The big story of the week.

36:30Kevin:Yeah, big week for glasses. It's a big week for fucking glasses. So this really started with Snapchat. And so. Because that was what, last week? Which was, yeah, last week. Snapchat. Remember Snapchat, Kevin? I do remember Snapchat. You could send a picture or a video to a friend, it would disappear. Yeah. Apparently people still use it. Cool. I interviewed for them once. I came very close to taking a job of Snapchat. And I. This could have been you. You could have been wearing those. Could have been me, dude. You could have been behind specs. And they tried doing glasses once. This is not the first time that they've tried glasses.

37:05I believe the first one.

37:06Kevin:If at first you don't succeed, try again. Exactly. Exactly. Because they're trying to figure out what Snapchat, a company that was a sort of social media player, which I think they probably are still in the top 10, maybe top five. I think they've got a young contingency. They have a young user base. I have no data here, but I think they have users. People use it to communicate. Yeah. And, but for some reason they're hung up on glasses and they're hung up on wearable tech, which I don't think makes a lot of sense for them. I don't even think it makes a lot of sense for Zuckerberg, but I think at this point meta is like so many things that I guess it makes sense.

37:47Kevin:Yeah. But Snapchat released, there's new glasses, which are augmented reality glasses, which to be honest, I'm going to just say it. This is what I have kind of always wanted. Like back in the day, Google glasses came out and they were like, okay, you're going to be able to wear these fucking crazy glasses on your face. You're going to be able to walk around in the streets and things are going to pop up. Things are going to interact with the world around you. It's going to help you when you're in meetings or you're talking to someone, you're going to get some information. It's going to give you directions and you don't have to look at your phone.

38:22It will just be all in your vision, which I think could be really cool. That was a million years ago. So the fact is that no one has tried to do this since. And now Snapchat is trying to do it. The glasses look chunky.

38:40Kevin:Yeah, they are not good looking. But they don't look bad. They just look thick. They look like you need to be like a very attractive person to pull them off. With a lot of hair. You need a lot of hair to wear them. Also, they're$2 ,000, which I don't think is like, obviously it's expensive, but compare them to like Apple Vision Pro, which those things you need to strap to the top of your head. Yeah. And I mean. It is probably a better invention than Apple Vision Pro. It's a better wearable augmented reality experience than Apple Vision Pro is. Yeah. That's a good thing. So I'm kind of going to defend them for a second because this is kind of what I've wanted.

39:24And so I'm kind of down for these in a weird way. Unfortunately, the rollout got botched by their founder's ears. So if you didn't see it, Snapchat comes over with these glasses, they're$2 ,000 to do a campaign with like Jack Harlow and like Kaya Gerber and like all these famous celebrities wearing the glasses because that's now the way to get people to care about this kind of stuff. They're in black and white. They're shot by some famous photographer. They look good. They look pretty good. Snapchat invested$3 billion in these gloves to develop them.

39:56Kevin:And so how much money did they need to give Jack Harlow to wear them? Jeez Louise. And they come out, and I think they could have maybe gotten some traction, potentially. But they made a big mistake, which was they put Evan Spielberg's value cycle or something, whatever, on TV to promote these things. and his ears appeared to be crushed by the weight of these glasses, which immediately sent the internet into. And he also looks like he has a bit of a small head, potentially. Yeah. I don't know how big this man is, but the glasses seem to be dominating his face. Yes. And that immediately became meme culture.

40:35Kevin:And it turns out his ear is just like that. And so people were looking at the glasses, and his ear appeared to be folded down by the weight. Because they put most of the tech, I guess, in the glasses themselves. Yeah, yeah. Because it has to go somewhere. And apparently it's going. It's the, I don't know, the edges of the glass. What do you call those? The fucking, I don't know, the fucking glasses, the legs of them. They're fucking thick. They're chunky ass legs on these glasses. And so his ears appear to be dominated by these glasses. And they appear to be folding over. And so people were just zooming in on them and then making them bigger and bigger and bigger.

41:18which was hilarious. And then he came out the next day and he said, hey guys, this is what my ears look like without glasses on me. They're just fucked up.

41:27Kevin:Yeah, that's tough. That's fucking tough, man. Also, another thing, someone in the room should have been like, hey man, we need to find someone else to go on TV wearing these glasses. Or maybe let's get them from the other side. I think it's both ears. It's both ears? It's both ears. Oh, whoa. Or you should grow out your hair. You spent$3 billion on sort of building these glasses. We got to have some – we got to cover up those ears somehow. The crushed ear is a tough look. I can't lie. But I'm interested in this. I don't know. Let's see. Watch this space. But it doesn't look like it's going so well.

42:08Kevin:Yeah. They said the stock dropped like 10 % immediately, which is not a good sign for a product rollout. Yeah. They just look thick. They just look 30 % too thick. And I mean, if they look big on like Jimmy Butler's head, who is a professional athlete, probably 6 '8 or something. Probably 6 '7". 6 '7". They're probably going to look pretty crazy on the average person. Yeah. I mean, Jimmy's got so much sauce. But look at those. Oh, my God. They're crushing his ear. They are. They're crushing his ear. So these are too big. I was doing a little poking around on the Specs website today to try to get prepared.

42:53Kevin:And let's just say every third post I see now anywhere online is about Specs. Really? It is following me. I did the virtual try-on. You put it in the doc, which is hilarious. They kind of look good on you, Kev. They do. yeah i should get another pair of uh yeah i need more tech on my face for sure i should definitely get these i definitely i definitely want to pay uh 2100 for them yeah well i'll buy it for you oh great yeah yeah he's you want them i got them dude oh thank you yeah they're on the house oh no and then i saw they they had this like virtual basketball game which is like as like a 12 year old you know when you're like in your kitchen you know going in between the legs and you know shooting uh is very cool but then is it you know i mean like if i was 12 yeah it's like literally i'm imagining dribbling a basketball when i'm 12 in my living room and and hitting a freaking clean swish um but you don't even need to imagine anymore you can just do it on these glasses wow that's so sick if only basketball could be an immersive sport where uh you know i could somehow get some third experience from shooting a ball wearing a pair of eight pound glasses on my face.

44:09Kevin:Yeah. Not to be outdone, Zuckerberg came back the next day, maybe 24, 48 hours later, and was like, hold my beer. We got Kylie Jenner and we got cool looking glasses. They look way cooler. And they do look way cooler. They look way cooler on me. But they also virtually tried them on. Sick, dude. Uh, Meta has been doing this partnership with Ray-Ban for what feels a couple of years. Essentially the concept is cameras and glasses, cameras and Ray-Bans, which. And Oakley's. And Oakley's, which. Cameras in Luxottica branded glasses. Exactly. Which I think are cool for sport. Like I think we talked about like the Oakley glasses.

44:54Like if you're out there snowboarding, skiing, doing some sort of activity, bike riding. Like I think it's kind of sick. but in everyday life having sunglasses or glasses that record people unbeknownst to them like what what what i just don't understand the benefit of that i just don't understand when and where i would want to do that yes i agree with you completely um i think there's like some you

45:20Kevin:know weird privacy issues and whatnot yeah uh and even wearing them it's just like you know for what i gotta i'm obviously not recording but like you know like i go to the bathroom what i gotta take these glasses off now yeah they're probably watching and uh yeah i don't trust fucking facebook with anything meta whatever now i didn't you know obviously i've recorded myself going to the bathroom in the wilderness of course you know but like walking in noah cahan concert Yeah, like going into a bathroom in the lodge, it's just like, all right, I swear I'm not recording. There's a light. You'd see it.

45:59Kevin:I'm not. I swear. Yeah. I mean, I think the one thing about this is the Kylie glasses are just another style of cool-looking sunglasses, which, again, Ray-Ban and Oakley and then this as more of a fashion sort of style makes sense. I saw some video of Kylie doing like a POV content like video, like a day in her life shot with these glasses. And basically it's just like her assistant coming up to her and like giving her flowers. That's like, why do we need this? Slap those on the assistant. I'd rather see what she's doing. Well, that's the thing. It's like no one wants to see what Kylie sees. We want to see Kylie.

46:38That's the whole fucking point.

46:39Kevin:What she's sitting around on the couch looking at her phone asking people to bring her things. Yeah, going to meetings and talking to people that are waiting on her hand and foot. Like, sure. Like, I guess Zuck finally figured out that if you want people to be interested in things, you got to go to the Kardashians, which is what Netflix and everyone else knows. Everyone's doing that. So I guess, but I just don't understand. Like, meta glasses. And this is where I like, I don't know. I've been confused by this for years. Like, I just don't understand the benefit. I don't want them. I don't want to record things from my face.

47:12No one needs that. where at least the AR Snapchat goggles, at least I'm getting potentially some sort of experience.

47:23Kevin:But do you want that though? I feel like it's embarrassing if you were to be like, I don't know, if I'm sitting in a meeting and I'm consulting my AR glasses, I feel like that's embarrassing. I want that technology to be seamless in my - Just go on your phone like an adult. Just whip out your phone and look down. But I think that's bad too. And I want to be doing less of that when I'm talking to someone. So I want it to be stealth. I want it to be in my contacts or in my glasses. AR is the last thing you need. That's what I – no, I want – You'd be checking Slack messages on your specs. I want to be recording this podcast while reading my emails over here.

48:02And then over on the left side looking at my text. And over here looking at sort of my Instagram likes. And yeah, I want to be doing all this in my field of vision, dude. Fair enough. But that's what I'm saying. That was the promise fucking 15 years ago. So this is the best we got to was eight pound glasses on Jimmy Butler's face.

48:19Kevin:Listen, I'll take the Meta Glasses any day of the week. They've produced some good clips for me. Yeah, which I get. But I just I don't have that feeling that I want to have, Kevin, where I'm like, I need those. I want those. And I had that for Google Glasses in 2012. Like I had that and I was like, this is sick. They were ahead of time. They were way out of their time. Also, you kind of looked like a sort of sci-fi robot. That shit was wild. They're kind of hard. Also, those were way thinner than these Snapchat glasses. Yeah, definitely. So where's Google at? Where's Google at with the Google glasses?

48:53Yeah, I don't know. Dude, that was a prototype.

48:55Kevin:I think they even sold those. Definitely. Where are we at, Google? So I think that's maybe the place to end the show. Technology is not advancing fast enough. That's my big take. Dave and Buster is out here doing raves. Good for them. And Mountain Dew is bringing back five cent Mountain Dews, promoting their old cans. Sure. Good for you guys. Is that? Yeah, that's it. How do you feel about that, Kevin? What? Five cents? I'm happy to see anything. When was the last time you had a Mountain Dew? I don't even. I can't remember. Me neither. Not a fan. Not a fan of Mountain Dew. I never really had. Yeah, I never really had a Mountain Dew phase.

49:35Kevin:No, me neither. Didn't really. I was more of a Dr. Pepper. Me too. Dr. Pepper and Coca-Cola. Yeah, me too, bro. And Pibb, you know. Pibb. Me too. Shout out to Hover. Matcha, sparkling matcha lemon in your zoo. I'm going to be up all night. Wow. Delicious. Worth it. Worth it for this podcast, for the people. Thank you guys for listening. Welcome to all the new listeners. This is our show, Front and Center. Peace.
